At Insurify, our goal is to help customers compare insurance products and find the best policy for them. We strive to provide open, honest, and unbiased information about the insurance products and services we review. Our hard-working team of data analysts, insurance experts, insurance agents, editors and writers, has put in thousands of hours of research to create the content found on our site.

We do receive compensation when a sale or referral occurs from many of the insurance providers and marketing partners on our site. That may impact which products we display and where they appear on our site. But it does not influence our meticulously researched editorial content, what we write about, or any reviews or recommendations we may make. We do not guarantee favorable reviews or any coverage at all in exchange for compensation.

Reviewing your car insurance needs is one thing to add to your “to-do” list before heading out on a road trip. Your car insurance policy covers your car in all 50 U.S. states and Canada, even if you drive through a state with higher or lower insurance minimums. [1]

If you’re planning to rent a car, you may decide to buy rental car coverage in some cases.

How does car insurance work when you’re on a road trip?

Most auto insurance policies include a “broadening clause” that essentially converts your auto coverage into the minimum coverage for a particular state where you travel temporarily. So, you shouldn’t need to buy a new policy or change your coverage to drive legally in other states on a road trip.

Your policy will also cover any friends or family members joining you on the road trip as long as you give them permission. This is “permissive use” and applies to non-travel car usage as well. [2]

If you don’t have a personal auto insurance policy, you should purchase rental insurance for your road trip.

Road trip insurance when driving your own car

A good auto policy will cover common road trip problems like flat tires, collisions, vehicle damage from severe weather, and more. Depending on the details of your specific policy, it may already include coverage that protects you and your passengers. Because a road trip naturally means spending more time on the road, it may increase your chances of having car troubles.

Even if your policy has a broadening clause, your coverage levels depend on the state where you’re driving. If you only have your state’s minimum-coverage requirements, your policy won’t cover your vehicle in an incident.

Adding coverage or increasing your coverage levels can help protect your finances. Here are the different types of coverage you can look for.

Liability coverage

Liability car insurance pays for the other driver’s injuries and car repair bills if you cause a car accident. It also pays for legal expenses if the other driver sues you. Every state, with the exception of New Hampshire, requires you to have a minimum level of liability coverage.

Uninsured/underinsured motorist coverage

Uninsured/underinsured motorist coverage pays for your and your passengers’ medical expenses if another driver causes an accident and has insufficient car insurance to pay your bills. Some states require this type of coverage, but it’s optional in others.

Collision and comprehensive coverage

Often sold as a package, collision insurance pays to repair your own car when you’re in an accident, regardless of fault, while comprehensive coverage pays for a host of other issues, like theft, falling objects, and run-ins with animals. These coverages are optional.

Personal injury protection (PIP) coverage

PIP insurance covers lost wages and medical expenses for you and your passengers after an accident, regardless of fault. Some states require drivers to carry PIP.

Roadside assistance coverage

You may be able to access roadside assistance through your car insurance company, your credit card benefits, or a third-party company like AAA. It covers the costs of services, like towing and flat tires, if you have a problem while driving. This type of coverage is optional but can save the day in a road trip emergency.

Road trip insurance when driving a rental car

If you’re driving a rental car on your road trip, your own car insurance policy will extend coverage to you and anyone listed on the policy for the same limits. You don’t have to buy additional insurance, but you may have some gaps in coverage if you have a liability-only policy.

Rental car companies require you to pay for any costs associated with the rental vehicle and your passengers following damage from a collision, vehicle theft, or vandalism. For this reason, some people with personal liability-only insurance choose to purchase rental car insurance from the rental company.

This optional protection comes in the form of a collision damage waiver (CDW) or loss damage waiver, which means the rental company waives some or all of your financial obligations for the car. But CDWs have limitations because they usually don’t include bodily injury coverage for you and your passengers and damage to other cars and property.

Driving a rental car when you don’t have insurance

You must have some form of insurance to drive legally in most U.S. states. So if you’re renting a car and don’t have your own auto policy, you’ll need to get coverage in some way.

Some of your options for rental car insurance include:

Credit card company: Some credit card companies offer a type of rental car insurance coverage as a benefit to their cardholders. The protection usually comes in the form of a CDW that you can use on rental cars. Some cards, like the Chase Sapphire Preferred, offer primary coverage for rental cars at home and in foreign countries, while others may offer secondary coverage.

Temporary automobile insurance: A temporary car insurance policy from a major insurer can provide various coverage options with different coverage limits to choose from.

Car rental company: You can pay for a CDW from the car rental company, though you may need additional protection through temporary auto insurance.

Other forms of insurance: Homeowners insurance or renters insurance can protect you financially if someone steals personal belongings from your car, while health insurance can pay for your medical care. [3]

Does your car insurance cover you in Mexico?

If you live in the U.S. and drive into Mexico, your regular auto insurance policy won’t cover you. You’ll need to purchase a separate temporary car insurance policy tailored to driving over the border.

Many major auto insurance companies, such as Progressive and GEICO , offer temporary coverage for trips ranging from one day to several months. These policies should include a minimum amount of liability insurance, and you can add protection for property damage, roadside assistance, collision coverage, and more.

You’ll also need to bring the following documents with you on your trip:

Government-approved travel document, such as a passport or passport card

Vehicle registration

Car insurance policy for driving in Mexico

Valid U.S. driver’s license

A temporary vehicle importation permit

A letter of permission from your auto lender (if you lease or finance your car)

Does your car insurance cover you in Canada?

In short, yes. Car insurance policies from major U.S. insurers cover you if you plan to drive your car into Canada.

You’ll need to carry the following documents with you on your trip:

Standard auto insurance ID card

A Canada Non-Resident Inter-Province Motor Vehicle Liability Insurance Card, which you can request from your insurance company

You’ll typically need to show your passport, vehicle registration, and a copy of your standard auto insurance ID card at the border.

The Canada Non-Resident Inter-Province Motor Vehicle Liability Insurance Card comes into play if law enforcement pulls you over or you have a car accident. It shows that your insurer has pledged to meet the minimum legal insurance requirements in Canada.

Travel car insurance FAQs

It’s important to secure sufficient coverage before you set out on a road trip if you don’t think your existing coverage is enough. The following information should answer your remaining questions about car travel insurance.

Does travel insurance cover vehicles?

It depends. A travel insurance policy usually protects you against costs associated with medical emergencies, issues with airfare and hotel bills, and lost or stolen personal property. Some travel insurance plans allow you to add car rental insurance to the plan for an additional cost.

Does personal car insurance cover a rental car when you’re traveling?

Yes. Your personal car insurance policy extends coverage to your rental car when you’re traveling in the U.S. Check the details of your policy or contact your insurer for more specific information.

How can you get insured to drive a car in any country?

A personal auto insurance policy from the U.S. won’t cover you abroad, except when you’re driving from the U.S. to Canada. But some companies sell global auto insurance policies that may work in one or more foreign countries.

Getting international car insurance

Driving your car.

If you plan to drive your car outside of the United States, it's important to make sure you have proper auto insurance coverage before hitting the road. Our auto insurance policies do not extend to cover you in foreign countries, so it's important to research and obtain additional coverage. Check the specific insurance requirements for the country you'll be driving in, as they can vary widely. It's recommended to plan ahead and purchase coverage well in advance of your trip to ensure that you're protected while driving abroad.

International rental car insurance

You should consider purchasing international rental car insurance when renting a car abroad to protect yourself from potential damages or accidents. There are many credit card companies and rental car agencies that offer insurance coverage, but you should read the terms and conditions carefully to make sure you're adequately covered. You should contact your credit card company with questions about coverage and compliance with international auto insurance policies.

Before you drive or rent a car in a foreign country, make sure you know the specific insurance requirements and laws. Some countries may require you to purchase certain types of coverage or provide proof of insurance before you're allowed to drive on their roads. It's also important to note that insurance coverage may vary widely depending on the country, so it's important to do your research in advance.

Be sure to carefully review the international rental car insurance policy before purchasing it to ensure you know what is covered. Some policies may have exclusions or limitations that could leave you vulnerable in certain situations. Also, be aware of any deductibles or out-of-pocket expenses that may apply if the rental car is damaged or in an accident. By doing your research and carefully reviewing your options, you can ensure that you're adequately protected while driving a rental car abroad.

What travel insurance covers

How much does travel insurance cost, types of travel insurance, how to get travel insurance, what to look for in travel insurance, best travel insurance comparison sites, which insurance company is best for travel insurance, when to skip travel insurance, travel insurance, recapped.

Travel insurance can cover medical expenses, emergencies, trip interruptions, baggage, rental cars and more.

Cost is affected by trip length, pre-existing medical conditions, depth of coverage, your age and add-ons.

You can get it through credit cards or third-party companies, & can shop on travel insurance comparison sites.

Before buying, evaluate risks, know existing coverage, obtain quotes online and review policy details warily.

Skip it if you buy flexible airfare and hotels, already have coverage or only book refundable activities.

Booking travel always carries some degree of uncertainty. Travel insurance provides a safety net so you can step out with confidence. You may not need travel insurance for inexpensive trips, but it can provide a sense of security when you prepay for pricey reservations, a big international trip or travel during cold and flu season, which can be unpredictable.

According to insurance comparison site Squaremouth, travelers in 2023 spent an average of $403 for comprehensive coverage, compared to $96 for medical-only policies. Comprehensive plans typically cost between 5% and 10% of the insured trip cost.

Since that price tag is no small amount, it helps to know how to shop smart for travel insurance. Here's how to find the right travel insurance plan for you and your next adventure.

Depending on the type of coverage you’re looking for, the chart below will help you determine what to look for when selecting a policy:

Depending on the policy, travel insurance reimburses you or offers services when something goes awry. There’s even coverage for the worst-case scenario: if you die in an accident while traveling. Accidental death coverage pays your beneficiary a lump sum in that case.

Before you buy, take a little time to get familiar with different types of travel insurance products, how it’s priced, and what it covers and excludes. If you’re traveling during these uncertain times, you’ll want to make sure that the policy you select covers coronavirus-related emergencies. Usually, the more thorough the coverage, the more it will cost.

Travel insurance costs vary depending on:

Length and cost of the trip: The longer and more expensive the trip, the higher the policy cost.

Cost of local health care: High health-care costs in your destination can drive up the price of trip insurance.

Medical conditions you want covered: Conditions you already have will increase the cost of travel insurance coverage.

Amount and breadth of coverage: The more risks a policy covers, the more it will cost.

Your age: Generally the older you are, the higher the price.

Any optional supplement you add to your policy : Cancel For Any Reason , Interrupt For Any Reason and more.

Keep these factors in mind when considering different travel insurance options.

You’ll find a wide selection of travel protection plans when you shop for a policy.

Typically, travel insurance is sold as a package, known as a comprehensive plan, which includes a variety of coverage.

Here are seven of the most common types of travel insurance:

Travel medical insurance

These plans provide health insurance while you’re away from home. Although in some ways these policies work like traditional health plans, generally you cannot use travel health insurance for routine medical events. For example, a routine medical checkup is usually not covered. In addition, these policies often include limitations on coverage and exclusions for pre-existing conditions.

Although most travel insurance plans cover many recreational activities, such as skiing and horseback riding, they often exclude adventure sports, such as skydiving or parasailing, or competition in organized sporting events. You may need to buy a special travel policy designed for adventure or competitive sports.

International travel insurance

Most likely, your U.S.-based medical insurance will not work while you’re traveling internationally, and Medicare does not provide any coverage once you leave the United States outside of a few very specific exemptions. If you plan on traveling abroad, purchasing travel medical insurance could make a lot of sense.

Trip cancellation, interruption and delay

Trip cancellation coverage reimburses you for prepaid, nonrefundable expenses if the tour operator goes out of business or you have to cancel the trip for one of the covered reasons outlined in the policy, such as:

Your own illness.

The illness or death of a family member who’s not traveling with you.

Natural disasters.

Trip interruption insurance covers the nonrefundable cost of the unused portion of the trip if it is interrupted due to a reason outlined in the policy.

Trip delay coverage reimburses you for expenses such as lodging and meals if you’re delayed during a trip (e.g., your flight gets canceled due to weather ).

Many package policies cover all three. These policies are different from the cancellation waivers that cruise lines and tour operators offer, the Insurance Information Institute says. Waivers are cheap, ranging from $40 to $60, and often include restrictions. For example, according to the institute, waivers might not refund your money if you cancel immediately before departure. Waivers are technically not insurance policies.

Some companies offer additional layers of coverage at extra cost. “Cancel For Any Reason” coverage will reimburse a large part of the trip cost, no matter why you back out. And some companies let you pay extra to cover pre-existing conditions if you cancel for medical reasons.

Some insurers and comparison sites let you customize a policy by choosing types of coverage a la carte. For example, TravelInsurance.com is a comparison site that provides quotes from different providers.

Baggage and personal belongings

How does lost luggage insurance work? This coverage reimburses you for baggage and personal belongings that are lost, stolen or damaged during the trip. Some plans also reimburse you for extra expenses if you experience a baggage delay for more than a certain period, such as 12 hours.

Your renters or homeowners insurance may cover personal belongings while you are traveling. It’s best to review your homeowners insurance policy to determine the level of coverage it provides so you do not end up paying for a benefit you already have.

Emergency medical assistance, evacuation and repatriation

This coverage pays medical expenses if you get sick or injured on a trip . Medical evacuation coverage pays for transporting you to the nearest hospital, and medical repatriation pays for flying you to your home country.

24-hour assistance

This service is included with many package plans. The insurer provides a 24-hour hotline that you can call when you need help, such as booking a flight after a missed connection, finding lost luggage, or locating a doctor or lawyer.

Generally, travel insurance companies do not cover sports or any activity that can be deemed risky. If you’re thinking of incorporating adventurous activities into your vacation, choose a plan that includes adventure sports coverage.

Most travel insurers cover a wide array of services, but the specific options vary. Some plans include concierge services, providing help with restaurant referrals, tee time reservations and more. Many services also offer information before the trip, such as required vaccinations. The only way to know what’s included is to read the policy.

» Learn more: Should you insure your cruise?

Accidental death and dismemberment insurance

This coverage pays a lump sum to your beneficiary, such as a family member, if you die in an accident while on the trip. Accidental death and dismemberment insurance policies also pay a portion of the sum to you if you lose a hand, foot, limb, eyesight, speech or hearing. Some plans apply only to accidental death in a plane.

This coverage may be duplicative if you already have sufficient life insurance, which pays out whether you die in an accident or from an illness. You may also already have accidental death and dismemberment insurance through work, so it's best to check your policies to ensure you’re not overpaying.

Rental car coverage

Rental car insurance pays for repairing your rental car if it’s damaged in a wreck, by vandals or in a natural disaster. The coverage doesn't include liability insurance, which pays for damage to other vehicles or for the medical treatment of others if you cause an accident and are held responsible.

Ask your car insurance company whether your policy will cover you when renting cars on the trip. U.S. car insurance policies generally don’t cover you when driving in other countries, except Canada.

Car insurance requirements are complex because they vary among countries. You can usually purchase liability insurance from the rental car company. Learn about car insurance requirements by searching for auto insurance by country on the U.S. Embassy website .

A note about single vs. long-term policies

Single trip insurance plans are a great option for those going on a single trip for a specific length of time (e.g., a two-week vacation) and then returning home. The price of the policy is usually determined by the cost of the trip.

Long-term travel policies cover you for multiple trips, but there are limitations to how long you can be away from home, if you can return home during your travels and how many trips you can take. In addition, trip cancellation and interruption coverage is either not offered or capped at a dollar amount that can be significantly below the total cost of all the trips taken during the covered period.

Long-term travel insurance plans — often called 'multi-trip' or 'annual travel insurance' — are a suitable option for those who travel often and are satisfied with the amount of trip cancellation coverage for all the trips they take over the duration of the policy.

Below, we include how to obtain travel insurance, along with the pros and cons of each option.

Some credit cards offer trip cancellation and rental car insurance if you use the card to book the trip or car.

Keep these tips in mind when you’re considering a trip insurance policy.

Evaluate the financial risks you face when traveling. Can you bear those costs yourself, or do you want insurance?

Examine what coverage you already have: Does your credit card offer travel insurance? Do you have renters or homeowners insurance to cover belongings? What is the deductible? Will your health plan cover you in all the locations where you travel?

Get quotes for trip insurance online. Choose a package of the benefits you need and compare prices for similar coverage among carriers.

Narrow your choices and then read the policy fine print to understand what’s covered, what’s excluded and the limits on coverage. You may find that the lowest-priced policy is too restrictive and that paying a little more gets you the coverage you need. Or you might find that the cheapest, most basic policy fits the bill.

There are a few scenarios when spending extra on travel insurance doesn't really make sense, like:

You booked flexible airline tickets.

Your hotel room has a good cancellation policy.

It's already included in your credit card.

You haven't booked any nonrefundable activities.

» Learn more: When you don't need travel insurance

Yes, especially for nonrefundable trips and travel during the COVID-era. Whether you purchase a comprehensive travel insurance policy or have travel insurance from your credit card, you shouldn't travel without having some sort of travel protection in place to safeguard you and your trip. Travel insurance can protect you in case of an unexpected emergency such as a canceled flight due to weather, a medical event that requires hospitalization, lost luggage and more.

There are many good travel insurance policies out there and a policy that may be great for you may not be good for someone else. Selecting the best plan depends on what coverage you would like and your trip details.

For example, World Nomads offers a comprehensive travel insurance policy that has excellent coverage for adventure sports. Allianz provides coverage for trips of varying lengths of time through its single trip plans and multi-trip plans. Some providers offer add-on options like Cancel For Any Reason travel insurance. If you’re not sure which plan to go with, consider looking at trip insurance comparison sites like Squaremouth or Insuremytrip.

Yes, you can. However, it's better to purchase it sooner rather than later, ideally right after booking your trip because the benefits begin as soon as you purchase a policy.

Let’s say you’re going on a trip in a month and a week before departure, you fall and break your leg. If you’ve purchased a travel insurance policy, you can use your trip cancellation benefits to get your nonrefundable deposit back.

Most comprehensive travel insurance plans offer trip cancellation, trip interruption, emergency medical and dental, medical evacuation, trip delay and lost luggage coverage. Many plans offer COVID coverage, but you’ll always want to check to ensure that the policy you choose provides that benefit if you’re traveling during these times. Some plans may also allow you to add features like Cancel For Any Reason travel insurance.

It depends which credit card you have. Premium travel cards like the Chase Sapphire Reserve® and The Platinum Card® from American Express offer travel insurance benefits if you book a trip using your card or points.

However, the coverage provided by the credit cards is usually lower than if you purchased a standalone policy. Review the travel insurance benefits on your credit card and check that the limits are adequate before foregoing from purchasing a separate plan.

Whether you’re seeking a single or a long-term policy, each travel insurance option offers different strengths and weaknesses. Choosing the right policy depends on your trip needs, your budget and how important various benefits are to you.

U.S. car insurance for short-term visitors

U.s. car insurance for long-term visitors, u.s. car insurance requirements, do i need to buy car insurance if i visit the u.s., frequently asked questions.

For short-term visitors to the U.S., whether traveling for business or leisure, navigating car insurance requirements can be a key part of planning their trip. For those who opt to rent a car, the most practical solution is often to obtain rental car insurance directly from the vehicle rental company. This approach simplifies the process, as short-term visitors generally are not eligible to purchase policies directly from standalone car insurance providers in the U.S.

Vehicle rental companies usually provide a range of insurance options. These include minimum liability coverage , collision coverage or loss-and-damage waivers, personal effects coverage and personal accident coverage. Opting for one or more of these insurance choices can provide adequate protection for short-term stays in the U.S., aligning with the specific needs of the visitor.

For Canadian drivers, the situation often proves more convenient. Canadian auto insurance policies are typically valid in the U.S., and in many cases, these policies may extend to cover rental vehicles. However, it is advisable for Canadian drivers to verify the extent of their coverage with their insurance company, as well as with the rental car company, to ensure adequate protection during their stay in the U.S.

For long-term visitors, such as students or specialized workers on visas, finding suitable car insurance can be a significant aspect of their stay. While obtaining affordable car insurance in the U.S. for foreigners can be challenging without an American driver's license, there are viable options available. It's possible (and often advisable) for these individuals to apply for a U.S. driver’s license, even if they hold a valid license from their home country.

Having an American driver's license could ease the process of acquiring car insurance. Most insurance providers favor a U.S.-issued license as it helps them assess the driver's risk profile more accurately. This step may help foreign drivers in the U.S.A. not only obtain car insurance more easily, but may also lead to lower rates. Additionally, building a driving record in the U.S. could be beneficial in the long run, as a history of safe driving generally lowers insurance premiums over time.

International drivers permits

If you plan on temporarily driving in the U.S. with a driver’s license from your home country, be aware of the local rules about how long you may legally operate a vehicle with a foreign license. You may only be able to drive with an overseas driver’s license for up to three months .

If you intend on staying stateside longer than a handful of weeks, some states advise you to get an international driver’s permit (IDP). Even if an IDP is not mandatory, having one may be a good idea. The document doesn’t replace your foreign-held driver’s license — it serves as an accompanying translation of it. If you get pulled over, the officer can look up the translation of your foreign driver’s license in the IDP booklet in the language of their choice and see that you are a valid driver.

To get an international driver’s permit, contact your home country’s traffic or motor vehicles agency to apply for one before you plan to leave. It may take around two weeks to receive your IDP, so be sure to apply well in advance. An IDP is typically valid for one year from when you get it and includes your information displayed on the driver’s license. You will likely need to provide a passport-style photo that the agency can attach to the IDP.

Car insurance for international drivers in the U.S. also depends on where you plan on staying. Each state in the U.S. has its own rules and insurance requirements. Most states only ask for liability insurance to legally drive, which helps pay for damage and injuries others sustain in an accident you cause. A small number of states also require you to have underinsured/uninsured motorist insurance , which kicks in to help pay your expenses if the party at fault does not have insurance.

In no-fault states, drivers usually carry coverage for personal injury protection (PIP) and/or medical payments to cover their medical expenses regardless of fault in addition to liability coverage. PIP pays for medical and burial costs, lost wages, childcare expenses and other household services, regardless of who was at fault in the accident. Medical payments coverage only covers medical payments.

Car insurance rates by state will vary based on local factors such as local cost of living, population density and crash statistics. Your car insurance rates will also vary based on whether you have full or minimum car insurance coverage. While minimum coverage car insurance is typically cheaper, it can leave you financially vulnerable in the event of an accident. If your car insurance doesn’t cover the full amount of damages, you may end up having to pay out-of-pocket. Minimum coverage also does not include coverage for damage to your own vehicle. Full coverage car insurance , on the other hand,  includes coverage for your vehicle, may include other optional types of coverage and is more likely to protect your finances.

Compare auto insurance rates

Car insurance is legally required for all foreign visitors operating a vehicle in the U.S. (except in New Hampshire ), regardless of how temporary your stay may be. If you plan on driving a rental car in the U.S., most rental companies will offer travel car insurance. This is the option to purchase coverage for the entire rental period, as the protection extends to the rental vehicle itself.

Some foreign visitors choose to ship their foreign vehicles to America instead. This is an option that will require you to purchase a separate car insurance policy before you can legally operate your vehicle on U.S. roadways. Many of the cheapest car insurance companies can help you find the right amount of coverage for your foreign vehicle at an affordable rate, so you can begin driving as soon as you pay your first premium and your vehicle arrives.

What is a REAL ID?

A REAL ID is a driver’s license that meets a set of federal standards and can also be used as identification when you fly. These IDs have security specifications, including a hologram meant to prevent the creation and use of counterfeit IDs. The U.S. has worked in recent years to phase out traditional driver’s licenses and replace them with REAL IDs.

Whether or not you need to buy travel car insurance when visiting the U.S. depends on a number of variables. For example, if you’re visiting the U.S. for a short period and are renting a car during your trip, you may not need to buy a separate car insurance policy. However, you’ll likely be required to obtain the insurance offered by the rental car agency in order to have liability coverage. On the other hand, if you’re visiting friends or family and don’t plan on driving during your trip, or plan to use public transportation, you won’t need car insurance for international drivers during your time in the U.S.

Can I use an international driver’s permit without a license?

An international driving permit (IDP) is essentially a translation document that complements, but does not replace, your foreign driver's license. It's important to understand that an IDP on its own does not grant you the legal right to drive a vehicle in the United States or elsewhere. Instead, it serves to provide a clear, internationally recognized translation of your existing driver's license, which can be useful if your license is not in English.

To drive legally in the U.S., you must carry your foreign driver’s license along with the IDP. The IDP is recognized in many countries and is useful for both identification purposes and to aid local authorities in interpreting your foreign driver’s license. However, it is not a standalone document for legal driving. If you are found driving without your valid foreign driver’s license but with only an IDP, it could be considered driving without a license, which is a serious offense.

Can foreigners get car insurance in the USA?

Yes, you can get car insurance for foreigners in the U.S.A. To do so, they typically need a valid foreign driver’s license and, in some cases, an IDP may be required. Insurance providers in the U.S. may offer various coverage options suitable for foreign drivers, whether they are short-term visitors or longer-term residents. It's essential for foreign drivers to research and compare different insurance policies to find coverage that best suits their needs and complies with state-specific regulations.

Does my driving record in another country affect the cost of my insurance in the U.S.?

Typically, car insurance companies don’t consider driving records from a foreign country, so foreign drivers are usually treated as new drivers by insurers. Unfortunately, this means that you might pay slightly higher rates even if you have a perfect driving record in your home country due to lack  of available driving history. However, the only way to find the actual cost of your car insurance in the U.S. is to request a quote based on your personal factors .

Can I get a car insurance policy without a Social Security number?

Whether you can get car insurance without a Social Security number (SSN) depends on the location and  insurance company. If you request a quote and are denied for not having a SSN, you might want to shop around. More states and insurance providers are working with foreign drivers to ensure they are covered on U.S. roads, so you might have luck with another provider.

U.S.A Car Insurance for Tourists

tourist car insurance

Traveling to a new country for work, vacation, or visiting family and friends, can bring a lot of joy, but also a lot of stress. You will need to figure out where you are staying, what the expenses will be like, make travel arrangements, and make many more plans surrounding your newest adventures. While many people choose to take taxis or try to utilize public transportation, there are many downsides to doing so. Public transit does not always run all night and in all areas, and in fact, unless you are in a major city that likely won’t be a very good option. Even in major cities in the United States, not all subway systems and busing lines are operational at all hours. For these reasons, and others as well, it can be a good idea to consider renting, borrowing, or obtaining a vehicle while you are in the country.

If you do decide to go this route, you will want to know how car insurance laws operate in the United States. There is some complexity to the rules, and each state can have its own requirements in terms of what is needed concerning automobile insurance coverage. In every state except for New Hampshire, drivers are required to have automobile insurance. Even in New Hampshire, proof of driver’s responsibility is necessary to operate a motor vehicle. In every state, the most popular way to cover your liability while driving is to get an automobile insurance policy. You will want to know the ramifications of insurance law before heading on your trip, and will also want to follow through on what you will need in the state you are traveling to.

  • Do Tourists Need A Car Insurance Policy In The US?

Many people travel to the United States for its tourist attractions and to see the country. In the United States, liability insurance most often follows the person who purchases the insurance policy. Physical damage coverage, however, usually stays with the vehicle. The automobile insurance policy that you have purchased in your home country might not cover you for driving in the United States. Some car insurance providers provide coverage spanning multiple countries, but you will need to contact them to see if they are one of the companies that do. Either way, you will need to have the minimum insurance requirements for the state you are visiting.

If you are traveling to the United States and your legal residence is located in the United States, your car insurance policy may apply to your rental vehicle or a vehicle that you borrow. Contacting your car insurance company is the best way to check and see if you are covered in these cases. In some situations, if you are renting a vehicle, you can purchase car insurance from the automobile rental company. In fact, in most cases this is true. If multiple people are driving the rental vehicle, you may need to list all people who will be getting behind the wheel of the car on your insurance policy.

There are a few different ways that people go about obtaining vehicle insurance on a rental vehicle or loaner car. First off, people can rely on liability insurance from their own auto insurance policy, so you will want to communicate with your insurance provider to make sure that your plan will cover your specific situation. Other people take advantage of car insurance that comes through their credit card. For your rental car to be covered by your credit card company, you may need to use the credit card to secure the rental. You will want to check with your credit card company to verify whether or not they offer insurance on rental cars as a perk of the card, and if you need to purchase the rental with the card to get the coverage. Some automobile insurance coverage can be obtained from the rental agency itself, and you will want to ask whether or not the coverage you are purchasing covers both liability and physical damage when you are buying the policy.

  • What Are The Car Insurance Requirements For Tourists In The US?

If you are borrowing a vehicle from a friend or family member, it is possible that they may be able to add you to their own insurance policy on the car you will be driving. They will need to contact their auto insurance coverage provider to add you on. Some people also choose to purchase a short-term insurance policy for themselves to provide physical damage insurance coverage and liability insurance coverage for themselves if they are driving in another state or country.

Car insurance for foreigners in the USA

If you are visiting from another country, you will likely need an International Driving Permit in addition to a valid driver’s license from your own country in order to acquire a driver’s license from the state you are visiting to be able to drive legally. You will need to contact the state you are visiting’s Motor Vehicle Department to learn its requirements. The International Driving Permit is not issued in the United States and needs to be obtained in your home country if required. Keep in mind that if you’re looking to rent a vehicle in the United States, you will need a driver’s license. If you are visiting multiple states, a license from one of the states you are visiting is most often enough for your entire visit. Of course, you will also need to learn the driving rules in the United States, which you can also find at the state’s Department of Motor Vehicles.

Frequent travelers know that The Platinum Card® from American Express (terms apply, rates & fees ) is loaded with premium travel benefits and annual statement credits that can justify its large annual fee. The Amex Platinum’s car rental benefits include protection against theft or damage¹ and elite status perks with Avis, Hertz and National Car Rental (enrollment required).

The card’s secondary rental car coverage¹ puts it at a distinct disadvantage to other luxury travel cards that include primary rental car insurance. However, Amex cardholders can also opt for primary rental car protection for a flat fee under $25 that’s only charged once per rental period (price varies depending on coverage selection and location).

When the annual fee can be worth it: Here’s how this card holder gets every penny back from the annual fee on their Amex Platinum

Amex Platinum Card overview

The American Express Platinum Card includes a variety of premium travel benefits for luxury travelers. In exchange for its $695 annual fee, you receive more than $1,500 in value, such as annual statement credits, airport lounge access, complimentary elite status and more. Here are a few of the major perks included with this card:

  • Welcome bonus: 80,000 Membership Rewards® Points after spending $8,000 on eligible purchases in the first six months of card membership.
  • Earn high rewards in several areas: 5 Membership Rewards® points per $1 for flights booked directly with airlines or with American Express Travel on up to $500,000 per calendar year, 5 points per $1 on prepaid hotels booked with American Express Travel and 1 point per $1 on other purchases.
  • Flexible redemption options: Membership Rewards points have numerous redemption options, including booking travel, cash back (via statement credit), gift cards, online shopping and more. Plus, Amex partners with nearly two dozen airlines and hotels, so you can transfer points to book award reservations through those loyalty programs.
  • Global Lounge Collection: Complimentary access to more than 1,400 airport lounges from American Express, Priority Pass (enrollment required) and more.
  • Travel protections: Your trips are covered against delay², cancellation and interruption³ when using your Amex Platinum to book your reservations.

How does Amex Platinum car rental insurance work?

To receive Amex Platinum car rental insurance¹ on your reservation, you must use your card to pay for the entire rental and decline the rental company’s coverage options. This coverage also applies when redeeming Membership Rewards points to pay for some or all of the reservation.

Rental car protection¹ covers Amex Platinum cardholders, their spouse or domestic partner and any authorized drivers.

Rental car elite status

As an Amex Platinum cardholder, you and your authorized Platinum Card users receive complimentary elite status from three major rental car companies. Each program requires manual activation of these benefits, and you must use the special code when booking a rental car to receive benefits like free upgrades and discounts.

Avis Preferred

When you enroll with Avis Preferred, you’ll receive Avis Preferred Plus status. This status level includes a complimentary upgrade (when available) and additional Avis Preferred points on your reservations. To receive discounts on your rental, use your Platinum AWD discount code “A756900” and pay with your Amex Platinum Card.

Plus, you’ll receive a free weekend offer after completing two qualifying Avis rentals in the U.S., Puerto Rico or the U.S. Virgin Islands within the following promotional period: January 1 – June 30 or July 1 – December 31. Terms and conditions apply.

Hertz Gold Plus Rewards

Amex cardholders receive complimentary Hertz President’s Circle status with Hertz Gold Plus Rewards. As a President’s Circle member, you’ll receive a discount on the base rate, a 4-hour grace period on returns within the U.S. and guaranteed car-class upgrades on certain classes of vehicles (with at least a 24-hour advance reservation).

You’ll receive these benefits when paying with your Amex Platinum Card and using the Amex Corporate Discount Code (CDP) “211762” on your reservation.

National Car Rental Emerald Club

When you activate benefits with National Car Rental Emerald Club, you’ll receive complimentary Executive tier status. You can choose any car within the Executive Selection area and receive automatic upgrades when a full-size through luxury car is reserved. Plus, after six qualifying rentals, you’ll receive a complimentary rental day. You can also choose to receive airline miles or hotel points from one of National’s partners on your reservations.

What does Amex car rental insurance cover?

When using your Amex Platinum car rental benefits, your rental car is insured for up to 30 consecutive days per rental agreement. Eligible vehicles are covered up to $75,000 against damage or theft of the vehicle.¹

Additionally, this protection covers you for other charges beyond vehicle damage. Rental car companies may charge drivers for loss of rental vehicle use, towing charges, appraisal fees, storage, administrative fees and more. The American Express Platinum card covers all of these costs.¹

These benefits also include accidental death and dismemberment coverage up to $300,000, accidental injury coverage up to $300,000 and personal property coverage up to $2,000.¹

What it doesn’t cover

Although the most exclusive cards, like American Express, are known for excellent customer service and generous benefits, the Amex Platinum car rental insurance¹ doesn’t cover every situation or claim. There are numerous exceptions where you won’t be covered against loss. Here are a few of the situations not covered by your Amex car rental coverage that may apply to your next rental car reservation.

  • Vehicles rented in Australia, Italy or New Zealand.
  • Illegal activity by the renter.
  • Driving while intoxicated or under the influence of drugs.
  • Off-road operation of the vehicle.
  • Intentional damage by the renter.
  • Normal wear and tear.
  • Theft or damage to an unlocked vehicle.
  • Cargo vans, box trucks or vans with seating capacity for more than eight passengers.
  • Using the vehicle for commercial or “for hire” purposes.
  • Off-road vehicles, motorcycles, mopeds or recreational vehicles.

Additionally, these car rental benefits only apply to theft or damage to the rental car. This insurance does not cover damage to other vehicles or property. Nor does it cover injuries to passengers, other drivers or pedestrians.¹

How to file a claim for Amex Platinum rental car insurance

If your rental car experiences damage or theft during your rental period, you’ll need to file a claim . Since the Amex Platinum car rental benefits provide secondary coverage ¹, you must also involve your auto insurance carrier unless you paid the additional fee to make the insurance primary.

  • Start your claim within 30 days of the loss or as soon as reasonably possible. You can call (800) 338-1670 or go online at americanexpress.com/protectionbenefits . If you’re outside the U.S., call collect at (303) 273-6497.
  • Claim forms will be sent to the Amex Platinum Card customer after starting your claim. If you haven’t received these forms within 15 days, you can submit your own written statement with the details of your claim.
  • Submit your claim forms and proof of loss within sixty days. Required documents vary by situation, but may include an itemized repair bill and copies of the rental agreement, the charge slip for the rental, your auto insurance coverage, your driver’s license and a police report (if applicable).
  • Claims for benefits are typically paid within 30 days of receipt of all requested documents supporting your proof of loss.

Amex Premium car rental protection

Although the Amex Platinum car rental benefits include secondary coverage¹, many travelers want a higher level of protection.

Amex Premium Car Rental Protection has two coverage options that offer primary rental car insurance. Depending on which coverage level you select, you’ll pay either $19.95 or $24.95 per rental period. This is one flat fee per rental, not a daily charge. California and Florida residents receive this coverage for a lower price.

This coverage provides insurance against damage or theft of your rental car for up to 42 consecutive days (up to 30 consecutive days for Washington State card members). It does not include liability coverage for injuries to others or property damage. Coverage is worldwide, except for Australia, Ireland, Israel, Italy, Jamaica and New Zealand.

This optional insurance can provide huge savings over the daily rental insurance fees charged by rental car companies.

Other Amex cards that offer rental car insurance

If you don’t have an Amex Platinum, other American Express cards include secondary rental car insurance¹ benefits at no extra charge, including (terms apply):

Additional Amex Platinum benefits worth noting for your next trip

The American Express Platinum Card is loaded with benefits beyond rental cars that may also be useful for your next trip. Here are a few benefits you should know about. Enrollment is required for select benefits.

$200 hotel statement credit

Save money with an annual hotel statement credit from the Amex Platinum Card. Get up to $200 back via statement credit for prepaid Fine Hotels + Resorts® or The Hotel Collection bookings with American Express Travel (The Hotel Collection requires a minimum two-night stay). These programs also include benefits like a welcome gift, complimentary upgrades when available and more.

Marriott Bonvoy and Hilton Honors Gold elite status

Link your Marriott and Hilton hotel loyalty program accounts to your Amex Platinum Card to receive complimentary Gold elite status in both Marriott Bonvoy and Hilton Honors. These benefits provide higher earning power on paid stays and generous benefits when staying at participating hotels.

Trip delay, cancellation and interruption insurance

When booking a trip with the Amex Platinum Card, you’re covered if your trip is delayed, canceled or interrupted. Trip delay insurance² covers eligible expenses up to $500 per trip when your flight is delayed more than six hours. Trip cancellation and interruption insurance³ reimburses you for prepaid, non-refundable reservations up to $10,000 per trip that are affected for a covered reason.

Amex Offers

Before booking your rental car, check out your card’s Amex Offers . These limited-time offers may provide special incentives for rental car reservations. Depending on your card’s profile, you may receive bonus points, discounts or statement credits when booking your car. Enrollment is required.

Frequently asked questions (FAQs)

Yes, the Amex Platinum Card includes secondary rental car insurance¹ at no extra charge. Use your card to pay for the entire reservation to be protected against theft or damage to the vehicle.

If your lender accepts credit card payments, you can use your Amex Platinum to make your monthly payment. However, if they do accept credit card payments, lenders typically charge a fee to cover credit card transaction costs. Contact your lender to ask if they accept credit card payments and what fees they charge.

Another option is to use a balance transfer or convenience check to make your payment. If you choose this option, be sure to understand the fees and interest rate associated with the checks.

The Amex Platinum car rental benefits¹ are the best of any Amex card. While the rental car protection offered by eligible Amex cards is essentially the same, the Amex Platinum Card includes additional perks that make it the most valuable choice. These benefits include rental car elite status, travel protections and generous hotel benefits.

The Amex Platinum car rental protection is secondary.¹ However, you can upgrade to primary coverage through Amex’s Premium Car Rental Protection for one flat fee per reservation (varies based on coverage selection and location). If you choose this option, it means that you don’t have to involve your personal auto insurance policy when making an eligible claim for theft or damage of a rental car.

To learn about your credit card benefits, contact customer service, read your card’s Guide to Benefits or review the card’s marketing page. When searching for your benefits, note whether the coverage is primary or secondary and if any exclusions apply to your rental.

Yes, authorized users, spouse or domestic partners and eligible authorized drivers are covered against theft or damage when using the Amex Platinum car rental benefits.¹ To receive coverage, your Amex Platinum Card or Membership Rewards points must pay for the entire reservation.

Ukraine-Russia war latest: French instructors in Ukraine would be 'legitimate target', Lavrov says on visit to West Africa

Sergei Lavrov, the Russian foreign minister, is on a tour in West Africa as part of a diplomatic push by the isolated Kremlin to forge new ties around the world. Meanwhile, an upcoming summit on Ukraine will reportedly aim to create a pathway for Russian officials to join future talks.

We're pausing our coverage for today but we will be back tomorrow with more updates.

Here is a rundown of the key developments today:

  • Ukraine has used American weapons to strike inside Russia, according to an unnamed Western source;
  • Joe Biden will hold talks with Volodymyr Zelenskyy in Normandy this week during his visit celebrating the 80th anniversary of D-Day;
  • Russian foreign minister Sergei Lavrov has been visiting countries in Africa as part of an ongoing diplomatic offensive from the Kremlin;
  • A former British defence attache has warned Russia's disinformation campaigns are "only going to get worse" as EU parliament elections and the Olympics approach.

You can scroll back through the blog to read all our updates from today.

A 26-year-old man of dual Ukrainian-Russian nationality has been arrested in possession of explosives after some of them detonated in a hotel room north of Paris.

The man was treated by fire-fighters after he "suffered significant burns following an explosion," on Monday, according to a source.

A source at the French anti-terror prosecutor's office said they had taken charge of the case and opened an investigation on suspicion of a terrorist conspiracy.

A subsequent search of his room led to the discovery of products and materials intended for the manufacture of explosive devices, the source added.

France's domestic spy agency DGSI is handling the investigation, Reuters reports.

Ukraine has used American weapons to strike inside Russia in recent days, according to a Western official.

The weapons were used under recently approved guidance from Joe Biden, allowing US arms to be used to strike inside Russia in defence of Kharkiv, Ukraine's second city.

The official spoke to Reuters on condition of anonymity.

Mr Biden's directive allows for US-supplied weapons to be used to strike Russian forces that are attacking or preparing to attack.

It does not change US policy that directs Ukraine not to use American-provided tactical or long-range missiles and other munitions to make offensive strikes inside Russia, US officials said.

Ukrainian officials had stepped up calls on the US to allow Kyiv's forces to defend themselves against attacks originating from Russian territory.

Kharkiv is 12 miles from the Russian border and has recently come under intensified Russian attack.

Volodymyr Zelenskyy has arrived in Qatar for talks with the state's emir, Sheikh Tamim bin Hamad Al Thani.

The Ukrainian president said on X that he planned to discuss Qatar's participation in a process of returning Ukrainian children abducted by Russia, as well as bilateral economic and security issues.

In March, Ukraine and Russia exchanged six children via Qatari mediation.

Earlier this week, Mr Zelenskyy made a surprise trip to the Philippines to thank the country for agreeing to participate in the upcoming peace summit being held in Switzerland.

A Russian-American man has been sentenced by a St Petersburg court to three-and-a-half years in prison on charges of "rehabilitating Nazism".

Yuri Malev was arrested in December over social media posts in which he was alleged to have denigrated the Saint George's ribbon, a Russian military symbol of valour.

One post reportedly contained "obscene language" and another other showed a picture of a corpse wearing the ribbon, captioned: "How to wear the Saint George's ribbon correctly".

The court in St Petersburg said this showed disrespect for society and insulted the memory of the Great Patriotic War (the Russian name for the Second World War).

Malev admitted guilt, according to the court.

He was a graduate of the law faculty of St Petersburg University and had lived in the United States since 1991, according to independent Russian language media.

Baza, a Telegram channel with links to Russian authorities, said Malev was a resident of Brooklyn, New York.

He reportedly entered Russia by bus from Estonia two weeks before he was arrested.

Moscow routinely refers to the government in Kyiv as a "Nazi regime", despite Volodymyr Zelenskyy being Jewish.

Ukraine has been allowed to shoot down Moscow's planes over Russian territory with American weapons since the war broke out, the White House has clarified.

Ukraine "can shoot down Russian aeroplanes that pose an impending threat", national security spokesman John Kirby said.

"And they have. They have since the beginning of the war."

The clarification was given due to confusion over Washington’s recent decision to relax rules on US-supplied weapons striking military targets on Russian soil.

Joe Biden gave authorisation for the strikes on a limited basis to help Kyiv defend itself against Kremlin forces advances towards Kharkiv.

Mr Kirby said he could not confirm reports that Ukraine had used US-supplied weapons on Russian territory for the first time.

He told reporters: "We're just not in a position on a day-to-day basis of knowing exactly what the Ukrainians are firing at what.

"It's certainly at a tactical level. So, I can't confirm that. I can tell you that they understand the guidance that they've been given."

By Ivor Bennett, Moscow correspondent

Sergei Lavrov's trip to Africa is part of an ongoing diplomatic offensive by the Kremlin, running in parallel to its conflict in Ukraine.

Isolated from the West, Russia is trying to forge new ties and has found fertile ground in Africa.

There have been several coups in recent years that have ushered in anti-Western military juntas.

US troops were kicked out of Niger, for example, while the French had to leave Burkina Faso.

In both cases, Moscow was quick to move in as the new security guarantors, and their efforts clearly don't stop there.

This is the veteran foreign minister Lavrov's ninth visit to the continent since Russia invaded Ukraine.

Kenya, Burundi and South Africa were among his stops last year; this week it's Guinea, Congo and Burkina Faso.

In return for military support, Russia gains an ally - they may not support the war, but they won't criticise it either.

The Kremlin portrays this as the formation of a new world order, free from Western imperialism and hegemony.

But others say Russia are the neo-colonialists, painting this as a blatant attempt to expand their sphere of influence.

Ukraine's first deputy foreign minister has held talks with his Chinese counterpart in an effort to increase cooperation between the two countries, the Ukrainian ministry said.

Ukraine's Andriy Sybiha also told Chinese Vice Foreign Minister Sun Weidong that he hoped China would participate in a Ukraine-led peace summit later in June.

Mr Sybiha added that it could be "a good opportunity to make a practical contribution to achieving a just and lasting peace", the Ukrainian foreign ministry said.

A report earlier today (see 7.40am post) said that June's peace summit opened doors to "limited talks with Russia" - despite Russian officials not being invited.

Earlier we brought you news that Ukraine said it had shot down 22 of the 27 Shahed-type drones launched by Russia overnight (see 8.04am post).

Now photographs have emerged of the aftermath of one of the strikes.

Firefighters work to put out the massive blaze in the Poltava region.

As Russia opens a new front on Ukraine's northeastern border, the war has entered an important phase.

Readers have been sending in their questions to our senior correspondents and military experts for their take on the changing battlefield environment.

Today, Trevor Prew asks:

Are there any signs of an underground Russian resistance operating inside Russia, or can Russians openly criticize Putin, as long as they don't protest on the streets or mention the war.

Russia correspondent Ivor Bennett says:

In a word, no.

There wasn't much opposition to speak of in Russia even before the war, but now there's nothing left whatsoever.

All of Putin's political opponents are either exiled, jailed or dead, as are those with any connections to Alexei Navalny.

Those who dare to speak out are silenced.

At one end, are the long-time critics and opposition activists, like Vladimir Kara-Murza, the dual Russian-British national opposition who is serving a 25-year prison sentence for treason.

But at the other end are ordinary Russians, like the former schoolteacher Nikita Tushkanov sentenced to 5.5 years for comments he made online about Putin.

The crackdown on dissent seemingly knows no bounds and it's created a climate in which those who oppose the war are terrified to speak out.

They do exist - as evidenced by the huge turnout for Navalny's funeral. But that was a unique moment and is unlikely to be repeated anytime soon.
