Because the Olympic and Paralympic Games will be taking place in Paris, this will mark the very first year that the Tour de France will not end in the “City of Light.” It’s also the first time the Tour ends with a time trial since 1989.

The Tour features four summit finishes and two time trials. The vertical gain will eclipse 52,000 meters over the 21 stages.

The 19th stage climb up Cime de la Bonette will reach an elevation of 2,802 meters (1.75 miles), the highest-altitude summit in modern Tour history. It was last on the route in 2008.

Who won the 2023 Tour de France?

Danish rider Jonas Vingegaard won the 2023 Tour de France, his second straight victory in the event. If Vingegaard wins again this year, he would be the first cyclist to win the event three straight years since Chris Froome from 2015-2017.

Relive the defining moments of the 2023 Tour de France below:

Vingegaard suffered a broken collarbone and ribs and a collapsed lung in Spain in April following a crash in the Tour of the Basque Country. He was hospitalized for nearly two weeks and his status for the Tour de France was uncertain, but he will compete when action begins in Florence.

Ineos Grenadiers shake up Tour de France management with Steve Cummings left at home

Zak Dempster named lead DS for the Tour with Erviti also in the team car

Steve Cummings

Steve Cummings was the lead directeur sportif for Ineos Grenadiers at the 2023 Tour de France , but he is not in Florence for this year’s race, with the team confirming to Cyclingnews that he will only work ‘remotely’ during the biggest race of the season.

Daniel Benson first reported Cummings' surprising absence via his Substack page , and the team confirmed the news to Cyclingnews . “At this point Steve is not on race but supporting remotely,” Ineos told Cyclingnews .

“The lead DS for the Tour is Zak Dempster who was also the DS for the Giro, and has been working with most of the key riders this season,” Ineos told Daniel Benson.

“Steve, as our Director of Racing, is across all races throughout the year, and on the Tour specifically will be supporting Zak and the team remotely, along with Scott Drawer, John Allert and the other senior team.”

Cummings has worked on a number of races as directeur sportif this season, including the Critérium du Dauphiné, which is traditionally seen as the build-up race to the Tour de France. He has no doubt played a key role in deciding the Ineos line-up and race strategy for the Tour de France but he will not be at the race.

Cummings and Tom Pidcock appeared to endure a tense relationship during the 2023 Tour de France according to the recently released Netflix Tour de France Unchained series. However, Pidcock and teammate Carlos Rodriguez dismissed the Netflix episode as “drama.”

Rodriguez and Egan Bernal have been designated as Ineos’ GC leaders, with Pidcock and Geraint Thomas to support them and target stage wins.

Ineos did not elaborate further, and Cummings did not comment on his absence.

Cummings was promoted to the role of ‘Director of Racing’ when Rod Ellingworth left the team during the winter. Scott Drawer returned as the performance director and John Allert stepped up from managing director to CEO of the British WorldTour team. Former Movistar rider Imanol Erviti has also joined the team as a directeur sportif.

Cummings did not feature in the team’s Tour line-up announcement, with Drawer and the rider the only ones speaking about their Tour hopes.

Erviti and Dempster were among the 50 or so team staff present at the press conference on Wednesday evening, but there was no sign of Cummings.

Former team manager Dave Brailsford used to hog the limelight during his long spell in charge of the team, but no member of the team management took part in the press conference, leaving the riders to talk about their own and the team's wider Tour de France ambitions.

“As long as we're all pulling in the same direction, which I'm confident we will be successful,” Thomas said.

“Of course, there’ll be bumps in the road, but I think it's just dealing with them as best we can at that time. We're all clear what we're coming here to try to achieve.”

Which Riders Didn’t Make the Cut for the 2024 Tour de France?

Here are eight notable riders who will miss this year’s race, from Sepp Kuss to Julian Alaphilippe, and the strategic or unfortunate reasons behind their exclusions.

76th criterium du dauphine 2024 stage 1

And it’s become harder than it once was: starting in 2018, grand tour rosters were cut from nine riders to eight. For some teams, the impact was minimal, but for others–especially teams with multiple leaders and/or goals–it caused headaches. Coupled with the fact that riders get sick, hurt, and just plain slow down, one can easily understand the delicate balancing act that team directors face when reconciling egos with aspirations–including the expectations of sponsors and fans.

This year’s Tour was no different, with several riders being left home as rosters were announced in the week leading up to this weekend’s Italian “Grand Depart.”

Here’s a rundown of eight riders who–for various reasons–won’t be riding the 2024 Tour de France:

Julian Alaphilippe (Soudal-Quick Step)

France’s Julian Alaphippe won six stages at the Tour de France from 2018 to 2021 and famously wore the yellow jersey for 14 days in 2019, ultimately finishing fifth overall. But it’s since been a rough couple of years for the former two-time world champion, thanks in part to a crash at Liège–Bastogne–Liège in 2022 that left him with two broken ribs, a broken scapula and a collapsed lung. After missing the race in 2022, the Frenchman returned to last year’s Tour de France, but was clearly a step or two below where he once was–much to the dismay of his team’s general manager, Patrick Lefevere.

However, things seem to be looking up for the 32-year-old. In May, he took a fantastic stage win at the Giro d’Italia in a ride that called to mind his glory years. But with his team going all-in on Belgian Remco Evenepoel’s bid for a podium finish at the Tour de France, there was no place for the Frenchman.

Chris Froome (Premier Tech)

Four-time winner Chris Froome will not be competing at the Tour de France for the second year in a row. And while it’s sad to see the 39-year-old on the outside looking in, it makes sense: Israel-PremierTech has won three stages in the last two Tours de France and seems to have found a winning formula by coming to the Tour de France with a roster filled with versatile opportunists who can win stages on all sorts of terrain.

And the Briton has done little to earn a spot on the team’s eight-man roster. He’s barely raced this season (or last season, for that matter), and when he has, he’s never come close to the top of the results. Froome’s story seems to epitomize the fragile nature of professional sports stardom: one minute, you’re on the top of your game, and before you know it, you’re an afterthought.

Brandon McNulty (UAE Team Emirates)

American Brandon McNulty raced the Tour de France in support of Tadej Pogačar in 2021 and 2022. Still, the 26-year-old will miss the French grand tour for the second year in a row after the team stacked its roster with three of the team’s other grand tour contenders who will support the Slovenian in his bid to win the Tour de France less than two months after winning the Giro d’Italia.

Missing the Tour again has to be a disappointment for the American, who’s won seven races so far in 2024 and seems to be getting better each season. He’ll likely use the time to prepare for the upcoming Olympic Games, where he’ll shoot for a medal in the individual time trial.

Tim Merlier (Soudal-Quick-Step)

Another casualty of Soudal-Quick Step’s bid to put Evenepoel on the Tour de France podium, Merlier–who won a stage with Alpecin-Fenix in 2021 and three stages at the Giro d’Italia this spring–will miss the French grand tour for the third year in a row. It’s likely that the team was clear with the Belgian that this could be the case when they signed him prior to last season, but it’s an omission worth keeping in mind as we all watch Evenepoel try and become the first Belgian to win the Tour since 1976.

Stage wins are valuable commodities at the Tour de France, but leaving someone like Merlier home is a calculated risk that teams like Soudal-Quick Step feel they must take to finish on the final podium. But if Evenepoel falters–and Quick-Step goes winless at the Tour for the first time since the late 90s–the team’s critics will be justified in asking why the Belgian sprinter was left at home.

Sepp Kuss (Visma-Lease a Bike)

Kuss was expected to be Jonas Vingegaard’s top lieutenant again at this year’s Tour de France. And with Visma-Lease a Bike besieged by injuries heading into the Tour–including those sustained by Vingegaard himself in a crash at the Tour of the Basque Country in early April–the team needed all the help it could get heading into the Tour.

Well, things went from bad to worse after Kuss–who won last year’s Vuelta a España–abandoned the Critérium du Dauphiné with a cold and then two weeks later was ruled out of the Tour de France after testing positive for COVID-19. It’s a sad turn of events for a rider who played a central role in each of the team’s seven grand tour victories, and hopefully, the 29-year-old can recover in time to prepare to defend his title at the Tour of Spain later in the summer.

Daniel Martínez (Red Bull-BORA-hansgrohe)

Martínez took second at the recent Giro d’Italia–the best grand tour finish of the 28-year-old Colombian’s career–but was still left off the Red Bull-BORA-hansgrohe roster for the Tour de France. That says less about Martínez than it does about the depth of the German team, which has the luxury of heading to the Tour with Slovenia’s Primož Roglič leading the team and a former Giro d’Italia champion in Australia’s Jai Hindley and the sixth-place finisher at the recent Critérium du Dauphiné, Russia’s Aleksandr Vlasov supporting him.

If it’s any consolation, missing the Tour puts Martínez in the driver’s seat to lead the team at the Vuelta a España–assuming everyone else buries themselves to help Roglič win the Tour.

Ben O’Connor (Decathlon AG2R La Mondiale)

O’Connor’s been featured in the first two seasons of the Netflix docuseries Tour de France: Unchained –and the producers haven’t always cast him in the best light. Sensitive, explosive, and sometimes downright bratty, he was a hard rider to like for most of the series–at least until the second half of the second season, in which he finally stopped thinking of himself as a GC rider and instead starting racing to win stages–either for himself or on behalf of his teammates.

But the 28-year-old–who won a stage and finished fourth overall at the Tour de France in 2021–won’t be riding the French grand tour this year after leading the team at the Giro d’Italia this spring. Taking a break from the Tour de France pressure cooker was obviously the right move for the Australian: he finished fourth overall at the Italian grand tour, no doubt increasing his value heading into the off-season. At that point, he’ll be free to sign with another team.

Jonathan Milan (Lidl-Trek)

In the last two years, Milan has won four stages and twice won the Points Competition at the Giro d’Italia, which might lead some to think he’s ready to try his hand at winning field sprints at the Tour de France. Well, those folks obviously don’t run the show at Lidl-Trek because the team is waiting at least another year before sending him to the Tour–most likely so he can spend time preparing to win a gold medal on the track at the Summer Olympics.

Since getting hooked on pro cycling while watching Lance Armstrong win the 1993 U.S. Pro Championship in Philadelphia, longtime Bicycling contributor Whit Yost has raced on Belgian cobbles, helped build a European pro team, and piloted that team from Malaysia to Mont Ventoux as an assistant director sportif. These days, he lives with his wife and son in Pennsylvania, spending his days serving as an assistant middle school principal and his nights playing Dungeons & Dragons.

Tour de france shocker: sepp kuss sidelined due to covid-19, the 2023 vuelta a españa winner will be replaced by bart lemmen in what's a huge blow for visma-lease a bike..

FLORENCE, Italy (Velo) — Sepp Kuss will not race the Tour de France , team officials confirmed Tuesday.

Visma-Lease a Bike officials said the 2023 Vuelta a España winner is not in condition to take the Saturday start, and will be replaced by Bart Lemmen.

“Sepp Kuss has not recovered sufficiently from COVID, and will not start,” a brief press note stated.

There was no immediate reaction from Kuss.

Kuss told Velo he started the Critérium du Dauphiné with an illness but did not indicate it was COVID, and he later pulled out of the important pre-Tour stage race in the French Alps.

Kuss, 29, was listed on Visma-Lease a Bike’s Tour roster revealed just days ago that included two-time defending champion Jonas Vingegaard and Wout van Aert, both returning from injury.

His exit will be a huge blow for Visma-Lease a Bike, a team that won all three grand tours in 2023 but one that’s been struggling with crashes and illnesses across this season.

The popular Colorado climber was potentially a “Plan B” for Visma-Lease a Bike if Vingegaard — who hasn’t raced since crashing out of Itzulia Basque Country in April —  struggled to keep pace with Tadej Pogačar and the other GC favorites.

Kuss — who finished all three grand tours last season — won a stage in the 2021 Tour and hit a career-best 12th overall in last year’s edition.

The “Killer Bees” could pivot to Matteo Jorgenson as a GC alternative if Vingegaard runs out of gas. The Idahoan was second overall to Primož Roglič at the Critérium du Dauphiné earlier this month, and has been on a lone bright spot for the team in 2024, with victories at Dwars door Vlaanderen and Paris-Nice.

Visma-Lease a Bike will limp into the Tour with Vingegaard, Van Aert, and Christophe Laporte all coming off injuries and setbacks in what’s been less-than-ideal preparations for their respective Tour ambitions.

The late-hour DNS is also a personal blow for Kuss, who’s started the past four Tours in a row.

Kuss is scheduled to defend his Vuelta crown later this season, and there was no immediate news about an alternative racing calendar.

Favorites stage 1 Tour de France 2024 | Mathieu's plans, cramps for Bettiol, and does Pogi want to shine already?

Grand Départ? Grande Partenza ! The grand cycling event known as the Tour de France will kick off for the first time in Italy, Florence, on Saturday, June 29. The race starts right away with a serious stage featuring no fewer than seven categorized climbs. What can we expect? IDLProCycling.com tells you everything you need to know. Andiamo !

Course stage 1 Tour de France 2024

We start in Florence, the hometown of Italian cycling hero Gino Bartali. The riders will set off a little after noon for a 206-kilometer stage featuring a staggering 3,600 meters of elevation gain. This is the most elevation ever tackled on day one in the rich history of the French stage race.

Set in the hills of Tuscany and Emilia-Romagna, this stage promises fireworks from the start. After a brief warm-up following our departure from hot Florence, the peloton faces the Col de Valico Tre Faggi after just 37 kilometers: 12.5 kilometers long at an average gradient of 5.1%.

After the summit, there’s a long descent to the intermediate sprint in Santa Sofia, with the Forche climb (2.5 km at 6.2%) as an appetizer. The midsection includes the Carnaio (10.5 km at 4.6%), preparing riders for the last seventy kilometers, which include three tough climbs.

First up is the Barbotto, likely the toughest at 5.8 kilometers with a 7.6% gradient. Then, it’s all about climbing and descending, as the Montemaggio (4.2 km at 6.6%) and a climb to San Marino (7.1 km at 4.8%) are next. By entering San Marino, the Tour de France will visit its thirteenth country in history.

After the last climb, there are still 27 kilometers to go to Rimini, quite a lot since only a small part of that is downhill, and the final 15 kilometers are completely flat as we head to the coast. The last three thousand meters are rather technical, with a big looping turn, a roundabout and a 180-degree turn near the finish line.

49.7 km: COL DE VALICO TRE FAGGI (12.5 km at 5.1%)

77.8 km: CÔTE DES FORCHE (2.5 km at 6.2%)

98.3 km: CÔTE DE CARNAIO (10.5 km at 4.6%)

135.6 km: CÔTE DE BARBOTTO (5.8 km at 7.6%)

157.3 km: CÔTE DE SAN LEO (4.6 km at 7.7%)

167.1 km: CÔTE DE MONTEMAGGIO (4.2 km at 6.6%)

179.7 km: CÔTE DE SAN MARINO (7.1 km at 4.8%)

Start: 12:40 PM

Finish: around 5:49 PM

Weather stage 1 Tour de France 2024

Hot, hot, hot. In Florence, where the stage will kick off, temperatures will reach around 35 degrees Celsius on Saturday, meaning riders will need to drink plenty. A light but somewhat refreshing breeze along the coast in Rimini will be pleasant, as will the temperature at the finish: around 29 degrees Celsius.

Favorites stage 1 Tour de France 2024

Make no mistake, the opening stage of the Tour de France always results in a tough stage. The question is: what team will make it tough? Likely the general classification teams, with this rule of thumb: you can't win the Tour on day one, but you can certainly lose it. Stage and time gains are nice, but finishing without mishaps or losses is even better.

On the narrow, hilly roads in idyllic Italy, teams like UAE-Team Emirates ( Tadej Pogacar ), Visma | Lease a Bike ( Jonas Vingegaard ), BORA-hansgrohe ( Primoz Roglic ) and Soudal Quick-Step ( Remco Evenepoel ) will do everything they can to keep their top riders at the front, making it a tight race.

The most likely scenario is that stage hunters will profit at the end of the day, unless Pogacar is already aiming for yellow and puts pressure on his rivals. He has the team, the historical awareness and — most importantly — the legs for it. This makes the Slovenian a top favorite, although he mentioned in a press release that he found stage two even more interesting.

Behind Tadej, there are many riders for whom yellow in Nice isn't important, but yellow in Rimini is. That is the case for Alberto Bettiol of EF Education-EasyPost, who will go all out in his Tuscany in the Italian tricolor to win this stage. Bettiol can peak well and has the guts to go all in at crucial moments, as shown in the Tour of Flanders, last year's World Championship, and the most recent Olympics in Tokyo. A downside is that he often suffers from cramps in hot weather — as evidenced by Tokyo 2021, the summer edition of Strade Bianche 2020, and it even happened to him as leader in the Tour Down Under 2023. From that perspective, the forecasted 36 degrees might be a dangerous obstacle.

Then there are the Belgians, who also have a realistic chance at the first yellow jersey. Wout van Aert is always on our list, but no one would blame the Visma | Lease a Bike rider if he isn't yet at his peak form. At Lotto-Dstny, Maxim Van Gils has made a big goal of this stage, while colleague Arnaud De Lie — like Mads Pedersen (Lidl-Trek) and Michael Matthews (Jayco AlUla) — will have to hang on and possibly come back in the last fifteen kilometers.

When going over the list of versatile and talented riders, we quickly come to world champion Mathieu van der Poel of Alpecin-Deceuninck, who returns to competition on Saturday after two months of absence. God knows, and perhaps Leonardo da Vinci or Michelangelo do too, but it's possible MVDP has silently worked on project Florence. Tom Pidcock was more outspoken: he is specifically targeting this stage, as he stated in the Tour of Switzerland.

Are there more contenders? Oh yes, because who predicted Adam Yates and Victor Lafay winning in last year's tough Basque opening weekend? A stunt like that might come from riders like Oier Lazkano, Alex Aranburu (Movistar), Magnus Cort (Uno-X), Paul Lapeira (Decathlon AG2R), Ben Healy, Neilson Powless (EF), Derek Gee (Israel-Premier Tech), Romain Grégoire (Groupama-FDJ) or Pello Bilbao (Bahrain Victorious) this season. Or will the big teams send Matteo Jorgenson , Aleksandr Vlasov or Juan Ayuso forward in a high-risk move?
