Full Cast of Mission Impossible 7: Dead Reckoning - Every Main Actor & Character

Mission: Impossible - Dead Reckoning, Tom Cruise

Mission: Impossible – Dead Reckoning Part One brings a vast and impressive cast of actors and characters to push Ethan Hunt's story forward for the seventh time.

Although it's been five full years since the Impossible Mission Force (IMF) took the spotlight in 2018's Mission: Impossible - Fallout , Tom Cruise is back to continue the franchise's 27-year run with a brand-new summer blockbuster.

Mission Impossible 7 marks Christopher McQuarrie's second movie in this series and his ninth time working with Cruise, most recently after 2022's mega-hit Top Gun: Maverick .

And after highlighting huge names like former Superman star Henry Cavill and the MCU 's Academy Award-nominated Angela Bassett , he'll have even more A-list talent at his disposal for the first of this two-part franchise closer.

Every Actor & Character in Mission Impossible 7

1.) tom cruise - ethan hunt.

After coming out on top of the movie world in 2022 with Top Gun: Maverick , Mission Impossible 7 brings Tom Cruise back as the franchise's leading hero, Ethan Hunt.

But while this film and its sequel are said to serve as a send-off for the danger-seeking action hero, Cruise told Variety said he wants to keep making Mission: Impossible movies until he is Harrison Ford's age.

In the movie, Hunt is against a rogue AI known as the Entity. The film highlights another round of intense action for Cruise with new car chases, fights, and even a motorcycle jump off of a steep cliff.

2.) Hayley Atwell - Grace

Hayley Atwell, Grace, Mission: Impossible 7

A brand-new character named Grace will take her place in the Mission: Impossible legacy alongside Cruise, with Hollywood fan-favorite Hayley Atwell embodying the role.

Grace is a skilled thief who often butts heads with Ethan, but is ultimately an ally.

Atwell teased an "ambiguity" to her role along with her journey through the movie while McQuarrie praised Atwell and teased something "unique and new" for her role.

Best known for her role as Agent Margaret "Peggy" Carter in more than half a dozen MCU projects, she comes off a wild cameo role as the Captain Carter Variant in Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness before making the jump into the spy world.

3.) Ving Rhames - Luther Stickell

Ving Rhames, Luther, Mission: Impossible 7

One of the mainstay characters in the Mission: Impossible movies is Ving Rhames' Luther Stickell, joining Cruise as one of the only actors to appear in all eight entries in this series. Luther has been Ethan Hunt's right-hand man for more than a quarter century with his skills as a computer technician and intelligence operative.

Coming out only a few weeks after Rhames returned to the MCU as Charlie-27 in Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 , he continues an amazing run on the big screen as he teams up with Cruise and the newcomers in two major summer blockbusters.

4.) Simon Pegg - Benji Dunn

Simon Pegg, Benji Dunn, Mission: Impossible - Fallout

After first being introduced in 2006's Mission: Impossible III , Mission Impossible 7 marks Simon Pegg's fifth appearance as the hilarious and crafty field agent Benji Dunn. Proving to be immensely helpful in Mission Impossible 6 as he helped reveal that Henry Cavill's August Walker was a traitor, he plays just as pivotal of a role this time around.

Pegg recently reprised his animated voiceover role as Buck in The Ice Age Adventures of Buck Wild on Disney+, and he also boasts credits in Star Trek and Star Wars franchises, most notable in a cameo role in 2015's Episode VII: The Force Awakens .

5.) Rebecca Ferguson - Ilsa Faust

Rebecca Ferguson, Ilsa Faust, Mission: Impossible 7

Swedish star Rebecca Ferguson will make her third consecutive appearance as former MI6 Agent Ilsa Faust in Mission Impossible 7 , having most recently helped Ethan destroy plutonium-adorned bombs at the end of the last movie. She was eventually exonerated for her actions after leaving MI6 and joining Ethan Hunt's team full-time, now serving as a more public figure with IMF.

However, In Dead Reckoning , Faust is on the run after retrieving one of the keys needed to access the rogue AI's source code.

Ferguson added some major projects to her resume the last few years outside of Mission Impossible, with roles in Chris Hemsworth's Men in Black: International and both of Denis Villeneuve's Dune movies.

6.) Vanessa Kirby - Alanna Mitsopolis / The White Widow

Vanessa Kirby, Alanna Mitsopolis, Mission: Impossible 7

Introduced in Mission Impossible 6 as Alanna Mitsopolis/The White Widow, Vanessa Kirby's character was revealed to be the daughter of Vanessa Redgrave's Max, the original villain from 1996's Mission: Impossible . After taking her place in the story as a mysterious and crafty arms dealer, she eventually joined the CIA as a broker to negotiate Solomon Lane's return while helping to let Ilsa off the hook.

Dead Reckoning features Alanna's White Widow again as she arranges an important deal that involves the two keys that everyone is trying to find, which will determine the fate of the whole world.

Kirby's career is highlighted by a recurring role as Princess Margaret on Netflix's The Crown along with a role in 2019's Fast & Furious Presents: Hobbs & Shaw alongside Dwayne Johnson , Jason Statham, and Idris Elba . She's also rumored to be in contention for a highly-coveted role in the MCU as Sue Storm/Invisible Woman in 2025's Fantastic Four for Marvel Studios.

7.) Henry Czerny - Eugene Kittridge

Henry Czerny, Eugene Kittridge, Mission: Impossible 7

27 years after debuting in Mission: Impossible as Agent Eugene Kittridge, Henry Czerny finally makes his return in both Mission Impossible 7 and Mission Impossible 8 . He served as a catalyst for the action in the original movie by accusing Ethan Hunt of being the mole in the IMF but eventually helped Ethan and Luther recover the organization's NOC list before imprisoning the arms dealer Max.

Since then, Czerny has added a number of major roles to his resume, most recently appearing in 2022's Scream VI . He was also seen and heard prominently in Mission Impossible 7 's first trailer telling Ethan Hunt that he needed "to pick a side," teasing another round of dubious character development for this franchise veteran.

8.) Shea Whigham - Jasper Briggs

Shea Whigham

Veteran actor Shea Whigham makes his Mission: Impossible debut in this new sequel, playing a new government agent named Jasper Briggs. He's said to be working closely alongside Kittridge, serving as another kind of "opposition to Tom (Cruise) and to the IMF."

Whigham is perhaps best known for his recurring role in the Fast & Furious saga, most recently showing up in 2019's F9 . He also has credits in the comic book movie world with a role as Detective Burke in 2019's Oscar-winning Joker along with a regular role as SSR Chief Dooley in Season 1 of Marvel's Agent Carter , reuniting with Peggy Carter star Hayley Atwell in Mission Impossible 7.

9.) Frederick Schmidt - Zola Mitsopolis

Frederick Schmidt, Zola Mitsopolis, Mission: Impossible - Fallout

Zola Mitsopolis was first seen in Mission Impossible 6 , with Frederick Schmidt playing the White Widow's brother as Ethan Hunt first met the controversial arms dealer. Ending things on contentious terms by the end of that movie as Ethan, he, and the White Widow discussed Solomon Lane's handover, tensions are sure to be there between him and 'John Lark' upon his comeback.

Schmidt's career is just starting to get going toward new heights, boasting guest appearances on both Supergirl and The Flash as he expands his role in this new movie as well.

10.) Anton Valensi - Yegor Gusinski

Anton Valensi, Andor

Making his Mission: Impossible debut as Yegor Gusinski is Anton Valensi, who will shine in one of the biggest roles of his career under Christopher McQuarrie's direction.

Recently, Valensi played a minor role as a guard in three episodes of Star Wars ' hit Disney+ series Andor , and he's also confirmed to play a role in this year's highly-anticipated Dune: Part Two .

11.) Christopher Sciueref - The Buyer

Christopher Sciueref

Christopher Sciueref's character goes by the moniker of "The Buyer," being the individual initially set to purchase one of the keys from Hayley Atwell's Grace.

Sciueref provided voiceover work on 2022's LEGO Star Wars game, LEGO Star Wars: The Skywalker Saga , and he also appeared in 2015's 300: Rise of an Empire (written by Zack Snyder ) and Henry Cavill's Man from U.N.C.L.E. in 2015.

12.) Esai Morales

Esai Morales, Mission: Impossible 7

After Mission Impossible 7 started production in early 2020, the initial COVID-19 shutdowns forced X-Men star Nicholas Hoult to step away from this movie's villain role due to conflicts with other projects. This led to Esai Morales taking over the role when production kicked off again.

Morales plays Gabriel, a ghost from Ethan's past and a loyal agent of the Entity (the movie's rogue AI villain).

Morales is perhaps best known for his recurring role on NYPD Blue , and he also had runs on How to Get Away with Murder and DC's Titans over the last few years.

13.) Pom Klementieff - Paris

Pom Klementieff, Mission: Impossible 7

Joining the fray as one of Mission Impossible 7 's villains is Pom Klementieff's Paris.

Klementieff was described as "somebody who...is partnered with Esai (Morales)" at the start of the movie and "represents this malevolent force" opposite Ethan Hunt.

Klementieff has had a busy summer already, having returned possibly for the final time as the MCU's Mantis in the highly-anticipated Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 in May. She also had a cameo role in The Suicide Squad under James Gunn and appeared in highly-praised projects like Westworld and Uncut Gems .

14.) Mariela Garriga - Marie

Mariela Garriga

Cuban rising star Mariela Garriga will join the biggest projects of her young career in Mission Impossible 7 and its sequel.

Garriga plays a mysterious woman from Ethan Hunt's past who was killed by Gabriel.

16.) Charles Parnell - NRO

Charles Parnell

Continuing his excellent appearances on the big and small screen, Charles Parnell plays one of the heads of the Community, representing the National Reconnaissance Office (NRO) in Mission Impossible 7.

Most recently, Parnell played a key role in The Mandalorian Season 3 as the Survivor Captain on Mandalore following his supporting role as Warlock alongside Tom Cruise in Top Gun: Maverick . He also provided the voice of Nick Fury in the much-maligned Marvel's Avengers video game that debuted in 2020.

17.) Rob Delaney - JCSO

Rob Delaney

In Dead Reckoning , Rob Delaney plays one of the heads of the Community, representing the JSOC aka Joint Special Operations Command.

Delaney may be known most for his role as the fan-favorite member of Fox's X-Force, Peter, alongside Ryan Reynolds in Deadpool 2 , and he's even been used as part of updates for the progress being made on Marvel Studios' Deadpool 3 .

Along with a three-year run on Game of Thrones , Varma joined the galaxy far, far away in 2022 with an important supporting role as Tala Durith in the Obi-Wan Kenobi series on Disney+. She was also announced to be part of the animated Creature Commandos series within the DCU , in which she will play the Bride in the franchise's first project from Chapter 1: Gods and Monsters .

Director Christopher McQuarrie has revealed in interviews that Hunt, as well as the other characters in the series, will be getting a deeper emotional arc than before. Mission: Impossible — Dead Reckoning Part One: release date, reviews, trailer and everything we know about the Tom Cruise movie

What crazy stunts will Tom Cruise pull off in the latest Mission: Impossible movie?

Hayley Atwell and Tom Cruise in Mission: Impossible - Dead Reckoning Part One

Tom Cruise's Ethan Hunt is back to save the world once again in Mission: Impossible — Dead Reckoning Part One , the seventh entry in the long-running franchise. Mission: Impossible movies date back to 1996 and are defined by Cruise and the incredible stunts he performs — the wire hanging scene, climbing the Burj Khalifa, doing a HALO skydive and clinging to the outside of a plane as it takes off being some of the most memorable.

Even as Tom Cruise approaches 60, the Mission: Impossible movies seemingly get better as they go along. The last entry, Mission: Impossible — Fallout , is the highest rated in the franchise on Rotten Tomatoes (97% "Fresh") and had the best box office of any of the previous movies ($791 million worldwide).

So how will Cruise raise the stakes in this new entry to the action franchise? Here's everything we know about Mission: Impossible — Dead Reckoning Part One .

Mission: Impossible — Dead Reckoning Part One release date

Mission: Impossible — Dead Reckoning Part One officially arrives in movie theaters on Wednesday, July 12 in the US and two days earlier in the UK on July 10.

The release of the seventh Mission: Impossible movie is a long time coming. Mission: Impossible — Fallout was released in 2018 and the hope was that the next movie would follow quickly on its heels with a July 2020 release. However, in the early days of the pandemic it was moved from that July 2020 date to December 2020, only for it to be moved again to November 19, 2021, then to May 27, 2022, and then again to Sept. 30, 2022, before it was finally shifted to its 2023 summer blockbuster date.

Part of the reason for the delays was the challenges of doing production during the pandemic. Production was shut down multiple times, first at the beginning of the pandemic and then again in 2021 when there were cases among the crew . At one point during production, Cruise was captured on audio criticizing crew members for not following COVID safety protocols.

With the new date for Mission: Impossible — Dead Reckoning Part One , the shift impacts Mission: Impossible 8 (which is being filmed back-to-back with to movie number seven and will presumably be called Dead Reckoning Part Two ), moving from its previous date of July 7, 2023 to June 28, 2024.

While not a trailer, footage that was shown from the 2022 CinemaCon event has been shared online. In it Tom Cruise is standing on a biplane over a gorgeous backdrop. Is there anything this man won't do for a cool looking stunt?

Mission: Impossible — Dead Reckoning Part One plot

Even though we're just about four months away from the movie's release, there is almost no information on what the plot of Mission: Impossible — Dead Reckoning Part One is going to be. But we can assume that Ethan Hunt and his IMF team will have to race against the clock to save the world from some kind of imminent destruction (after all, if it ain't broke).

While specific plot details are being kept secret, we have gotten some inklings on what stunts Tom Cruise will be performing for audiences’ enjoyment. A behind-the-scenes look at what Cruise and company have described as his most dangerous stunt came out in December 2022.

Mission: Impossible — Dead Reckoning Part One cast

Mission: Impossible - Fallout

Tom Cruise has been at the center of the Mission: Impossible franchise since the very beginning as IMF (Impossible Mission Force) agent Ethan Hunt. It has become one of the actor's most iconic roles in a career that also includes movies like Top Gun and Top Gun: Maverick ), Risky Business and Jerry Maguire .

While there were originally thoughts Cruise would hand the franchise off to Jeremy Renner after the latter was introduced in Mission: Impossible — Ghost Protocol , Cruise remains a constant and the driving force behind the movies (Renner left the franchise after Mission: Impossible — Rogue Nation ). However, Mission: Impossible has built up a team to go along with Cruise over its last few movies.

The IMF team that supports Cruise's Ethan Hunt is led by Ving Rhames as Luther Stickell (around since Mission: Impossible ), Simon Pegg's Benji Dunn (around since Mission: Impossible III ) and Rebecca Ferguson as Ilsa Faust (around since Mission: Impossible — Rogue Nation ).

There are also some tenuous allies from past movies that will be returning for Mission: Impossible — Dead Reckoning Part One , including Vanessa Kirby's White Widow and Angela Bassett's Erika Sloane, both of whom debuted in Mission: Impossible — Fallout. There's also Henry Czerny, who played Eugene Kittridge in the original Mission: Impossible .

Making their Mission: Impossible debuts with this seventh entry are going to be Hayley Atwell ( Agent Carter , Captain America: The First Avenger ), Cary Elwes ( The Princess Bride , Stranger Things ), Pom Klementieff ( Guardians of the Galaxy ), Rob Delaney ( Home Sweet Home Alone , Fast & Furious: Hobbs & Shaw ), Indira Varma ( Game of Thrones, Obi-Wan Kenobi ), Charles Parnell ( The Last Ship , Top Gun: Maverick ), Shea Whigham ( Boardwalk Empire , Perry Mason ) and Mark Gatiss ( Sherlock , The Favourite ).

On March 10, director Christopher McQuarrie also announced via Instagram that Ted Lasso star Hannah Waddingham is joining the franchise in an unspecified role.

Mission: Impossible — Dead Reckoning Part One reviews

The reviews are in for Mission: Impossible — Dead Reckoning Part One , and they are some of the best of the summer. In WTW's Mission: Impossible — Dead Reckoning Part One review , our reviewed called it one of the most thrilling rides in the franchise.

Other critics were pretty laudatory as well, as the movie quickly became "Certified Fresh" on Rotten Tomatoes and as of July 5 has a 98% score.

Mission: Impossible — Dead Reckoning Part One director

Mission: Impossible went through four different directors with the first four movies of the franchise, including Brian De Palma, John Woo, JJ Abrams and Brad Bird. However, since Mission: Impossible — Rogue Nation , the franchise has been shepherded by Christopher McQuarrie, who is once again serving as director for Mission: Impossible — Dead Reckoning Part One (and Mission: Impossible 8 ).

The Mission: Impossible movies have been McQuarrie's calling card as a director, though he had previously directed Tom Cruise in Jack Reacher (2012). Prior to taking over as a director, McQuarrie was best known as a writer, having penned The Usual Suspects and other Tom Cruise movies like Valkyrie , Jack Reacher and Edge of Tomorrow . McQuarrie has also written all of the Mission: Impossible movies that he has directed.

After the phenomenal critical/commercial success of 2018’s Mission: Impossible — Fallout , there was very little doubt that the Tom Cruise -led franchise would sprint back onto the big screen with a seventh movie. And five years later, here we are preparing our minds, bodies, and soul for Mission: Impossible – Dead Reckoning Part One , the first part of a two-part conclusion to the epic action franchise

Below is a breakdown of everything we know about Mission: Impossible – Dead Reckoning Part One , including its release date, the new and familiar faces set to appear alongside Ethan Hunt in some daring action sequences , and other mysteries that are waiting to be unearthed in what could be the penultimate chapter in the franchise. There’s a lot to uncover, so let’s get things started. Should you choose to accept this mission, of course.

What Is The Mission: Impossible – Dead Reckoning Release Date?

The Mission: Impossible - Dead Reckoning Part One logo

Mission: Impossible – Dead Reckoning Part One is set for a July 12, 2023 release, which is right around the corner. The movie, like so many others, was  delayed multiple times over the course of the past few years due to the COVID-19 pandemic and the cascade of issues that arose in its wake.

The current, and most likely final, release date was revealed at CinemaCon 2023. This means, Ethan Hunt will be setting off on his next adventure just weeks after the upcoming Indiana Jones and the Dial of Destiny opens up and a little more than a week before Christopher Nolan’s Oppenheimer brings the Manhattan Project to the big screen.

The Mission: Impossible 7 Cast Includes Tom Cruise, Hayley Atwell And Rebecca Ferguson

Simon Pegg, Ving Rhames, Rebecca Ferguson, and Tom Cruise sailing on a boat in Mission Impossible Dead Reckoning Part One.

Naturally, Tom Cruise is on board to produce and star in Mission: Impossible – Dead Reckoning Part One , reprising his long-labored role as Ethan Hunt. And just like in the previous six entries in the franchise, Cruise will be joined by some top-notch talent on screen. This includes Rebecca Ferguson , who will once again be taking on the role of former MI6 agent Ilsa Faust, Ving Rhames, as Hunt’s longtime best friend and most-trusted ally Luther Stickell, and Simon Pegg as IMF tech agent Benji Dunn. Other actors from previous Mission: Impossible movies set to return for Dead Reckoning Part One include Vanessa Kirby as Alanna Mitsoplis, aka the White Widow, and Henry Czerny, who will play former IMF director Eugene Kittridge for the first time since the 1996 franchise starter.

The Mission: Impossible – Dead Reckoning Part One cast will also feature quite a few new faces, with the most notable being Hayley Atwell , who is taking on the role of a mysterious character named Grace . Other new additions include Pom Klementieff, Shea Whigham, Rob Delaney, Cary Elwes, and Esai Morales as the film’s villain, Gabriel.

The Mission: Impossible – Dead Reckoning Part One Trailers Are Full Of Iconic Characters, New Faces And High-Stakes Action

Tom Cruise skids his motorcycle to the edge of a cliff in Mission: Impossible - Dead Reckoning Part One.

In May 2022, the world finally got a glimpse of Mission: Impossible – Dead Reckoning Part One when Paramount Pictures released the first (and for now, only) trailer for the upcoming movie. As would be expected, the two-minute teaser trailer was heavy on intense chase sequences (cars, horses, you name it), explosions, and of course, Tom Cruise running like it's 2018 all over again.

The trailer also has a great deal of intrigue, especially when it comes to Hayley Atwell’s character and the return of Henry Czerny’s Eugene Kittridge. In May 2023, a little less than two months after the movie was set to premiere, Paramount Pictures offered up an even more detailed trailer showcasing those returning characters, new faces, and high-stakes action.

With car chases, shootouts, espionage, and Ethan Hunt riding a motorcycle off the side of the mountain, this could very well be the most action-packed entry in the Mission: Impossible franchise yet.

Mission: Impossible – Dead Reckoning Part One Follows Ethan Hunt As He Tracks Down A New Weapon That Could Wipe Out Humanity

Tom Cruise stands in a crowd wearing sunglasses in Mission: Impossible - Dead Reckoning Part One.

The Mission: Impossible franchise has seen its share of dangerous villains with sights on weapons (or weaponized viruses) that could bring an end to the natural order, and it appears as the seventh installment won’t be any different in that regard. When releasing the May 2023 trailer, Paramount Pictures revealed that Dead Reckoning Part One will follow Ethan Hunt and his IMF team as they try to prevent a terrifying weapon from getting into the wrong hands.

The identity of those wrong “hands” was not revealed by Paramount, but with the villains and shadowy characters set to appear in the movie, there could be a lot of people after the device and world destruction.

Christopher McQuarrie Is Directing Mission: Impossible 7

Hayley Atwell and Tom Cruise speeding dangerously in a Fiat in Mission:Impossible - Dead Reckoning Part One.

While the Mission: Impossible franchise once relied on an exquisite corpse approach, with each installment being helmed by a different very renowned director (Brian De Palma, John Woo, J.J. Abrams , Brad Bird ), Christopher McQuarrie has taken over these filmmaking duties ever since Mission: Impossible — Rogue Nation . Similar to how David Yates took over the Harry Potter franchise after the fifth feature film, Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix, it would appear that Mission: Impossible and actor/producer Tom Cruise are perfectly content with McQuarrie handling the reins. And, it's hard to argue with the results. By many people's estimations, both Rogue Nation and Fallout are two of the best Mission: Impossible movies we have gotten to date.

Therefore, it makes sense that Christopher McQuarrie is on board for the two-part Dead Reckoning . He has established a long-standing working relationship with Tom Cruise, including 2012's Jack Reacher , and they've got a good collaboration going. There's no sense in breaking things up now. Hopefully, though, the pressure of making two Mission: Impossible movies at the same time isn't too much . At one point, McQuarrie said that he would " rather have leprosy " than direct Mission: Impossible 7 . Clearly, something changed if he decided to make not only one additional Mission: Impossible movie, but two more, and both at the same time. That's quite a big change of pace, but that's how it goes with M:I .

Ethan Hunt’s Past Will Play A Major Role In Mission: Impossible – Dead Reckoning

mission: impossible - dead reckoning part one

With the return of characters like Alanna Mitsopolis, the daughter of Mission: Impossible 1 villain Max (Vanessa Redgrave), and Eugene Kittridge, it should come as no surprise that Ethan Hunt’s past (both failures and successes) would come back to haunt the IMF agent in the upcoming Dead Reckoning Part One . This is something that writer-director Christopher McQuarrie pointed out in a November 2022 interview with Empire Magazine , where he also shed light on the significance of the movie’s title:

There are many things emerging from Ethan’s past. ‘Dead reckoning’ is a navigational term. It means you’re picking a course based solely on your last known position and that becomes quite the metaphor not only for Ethan, but several characters.

We will have to wait and see how the term “dead reckoning” plays into Hunt’s story (as well as for other characters), but considering the scope and scale of the two-part adventure, it’s probably going to be epic as all hell.

Mission: Impossible 7 Will Not Be The Last Mission: Impossible Movie

Mission: Impossible - Dead Reckoning Part One

As it was announced shortly after Paramount gave the greenlight for a seventh Mission: Impossible feature, there will also be an eighth movie on the way, and it's set to be released on June 28, 2024 , according to Variety . Clearly, that's a very short window between seven and eight, and the reason why is because the studio is making these newest sequels back-to-back , working on two Mission: Impossible films simultaneously. As if there isn't enough stress in making one Mission: Impossible movie. Alas, this series has always striven for the... you know. But whether or not Mission: Impossible – Dead Reckoning Part Two is the final installment in the franchise has not yet been confirmed .

There is still a lot that we do know about Mission: Impossible – Dead Reckoning Part One , but considering how the franchise has very rarely let us down, there’s a good chance all of this waiting won’t be for nothing. While we wait for one of the most anticipated releases of the summer, take a look at the 2023 movie schedule so you’re all caught up before the blockbusters start rolling out week after week.

After a troubled production, Mission: Impossible – Dead Reckoning Part 1 updates are well on the way, and Tom Cruises's next outing as Ethan Hunt shows time hasn't slowed down either the actor or the character he plays when it comes to death-defying stunts and high octane action. The Tom Cruise-led sequel is the seventh movie in the action spy franchise which follows in the footsteps of 2018's Mission: Impossible – Fallout . Dead Reckoning will see the return of Cruise as super spy Ethan Hunt along with some familiar allies, dangerous new threats, and of course, some wild stunts. Thanks to the continued critical and commercial success of the franchise, the new Mission Impossible: Dead Reckoning part 1 updates has been eagerly awaited.

Historically, Mission: Impossible movies have been notable for their spectacular stunt work — often with Cruise himself risking life and limb in order to make the scenes look as authentic as possible. Following the Oscar-nominated success of Top Gun: Maverick , Cruise and the team look to be delivering even more high-octane entertainment. After becoming the franchise's first returning director in Mission: Impossible – Fallout , Christopher McQuarrie returns for the third time. As the title suggests, this is the first part of the two-part story, however, given the exciting Mission Impossible: Dead Reckoning Part 1 updates that have been coming out, the sequel will certainly not be holding anything back.

Mission: Impossible 7 Latest News

The most recent Mission: Impossible - Dead Reckoning Part 1 updates arrive in the form of a new featurette and character posters (via Collider ). The posters don't give anything away, but they do confirm that certain characters will have more prominent roles than first expected. Rebecca Ferguson, Vanessa Kirby, Hayley Atwell, and, of course, Tom Cruise, all have close-up character posters. Another new and surprisingly minimal Mission: Impossible 7 poster promotes seeing the movie in Screen X (via Discussing Film ) too. A new behind-the-scenes featurette was released at the same time, which gives a bigger look at a Mission: Impossible 7 car chase in Rome .

Other recent Mission: Impossible - Dead Reckoning Part 1 updates are troublesome to some, as those planning to catch the spectacle on IMAX screens during the summer may struggle. The movie will be released just one week before Christopher Nolan's Oppenheimer , which has been given exclusivity on most IMAX screens for three weeks. Cruise isn't happy about the Oppenheimer IMAX deal , as it means that Dead Reckoning will be hard to see in IMAX, and it'll damage the movie's box office potential. This has started something of a feud between Cruise and Nolan, and Cruise has been personally visiting multiplexes and showing the managers his movie, urging them to screen it in IMAX.

Mission: Impossible - Dead Reckoning Part 1 is full of spectacular stunts that were made for the big screen. Showing the Mission: Impossible movie on every IMAX screen possible makes total sense for theatre owners too, as an R-rated three-hour drama about J. Robert Oppenheimer will unlikely be the huge blockbuster that Mission: Impossible - Dead Reckoning Part 1 will be. Those Oppenheimer IMAX screenings weeks into the movie's release will likely be empty too. However, a deal is a deal, and it'll be hard for Paramount to navigate its way around the issue unless the studio delays the movie.

Mission: Impossible 7 Release Date

The most frequent Mission Impossible: Dead Reckoning Part 1 updates fans have heard are the endless new release dates. Thankfully, after many delays, Mission: Impossible - Dead Reckoning Part 1 has locked down a date of July 12, 2023 . The current release date for the new Mission: Impossible follows several previous release dates of July 23, 2021, November 19, 2022, and May 27, 2022, and September 30, 2022.

Though the movie might struggle to compete with Oppenheimer in the IMAX, Mission: Impossible 7 has gotten a lucrative release date in China of July 14 (via THR ), which is the same date as the movie's wide release. China is constantly becoming a bigger and bigger market for blockbuster movies, and it's a huge market where films can gross hundreds of millions of dollars in that territory alone. With that in mind, the Mission: Impossible - Dead Reckoning Part 1 release date could help its chances of becoming Cruise's second billion-dollar-grossing movie in a row.

After such a long wait for the next Mission: Impossible movie, it's been a relief to many eager fans of the franchise to learn it's being shot back-to-back with Mission: Impossible – Dead Reckoning Part 2 . This means the sequel to Mission: Impossible 7 , possibly Tom Cruise's final Mission: Impossible , will be released only a little over a year later on July 28, 2024. In addition, Mission: Impossible — Dead Reckoning will be made available on streaming service Paramount+ 45 days after its theatrical release.

Despite having a rocky production journey, the new Tom Cruise Mission: Impossible movie has been confirmed for a while. Following the success of Mission: Impossible - Fallout , Tom Cruise announced in January 2019 that Mission: Impossible 7 and Mission: Impossible 8 would be filmed back-to-back. The filming of the movie was a long process given COVID-19 restrictions and the various shooting locations, but filming officially wrapped in September 2021.

The official runtime for Mission: Impossible - Dead Reckoning Part 1 has been confirmed, and it clocks in at two hours and 36 minutes without credits, which means that it'll likely be around 165 minutes with credits. This makes it the longest Mission: Impossible movie, beating the 147-minute Mission: Impossible - Fallout. However, it could have been even longer, as producers were concerned when they were struggling to cut it down from almost four hours.

Mission: Impossible 7 Cast

The Mission Impossible: Dead Reckoning part 1 updates for the cast have promised a lot of familiar faces returning to the franchise along with some exciting new additions. As with every movie in the franchise, since it began in 1996, Tom Cruise will return to play IMF agent Ethan Hunt. The only other cast member to appear in every movie, Ving Rhames is also back alongside returning actors Simon Pegg as Benji Dunn, Rebecca Ferguson as Ilsa Faust, and Vanessa Kirby as Alanna Mitsopolis. Particularly exciting for fans is the return of Henry Czerny as former IMF Director Eugene Kittridge who was last seen in the first Mission: Impossible and made for a great foil for Hunt.

Among the new cast members, Hayley Atwell will be playing the mysterious character of Grace. Judging by the footage, she will be an ally of Hunt and will be getting in on a lot of the action, and has previously been described as " ambiguous. " Esai Morales will play the movie's villain. Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 star Pom Klementieff also plays an antagonist in the movie as well, although her name has yet to be revealed. McQuarrie teased that she " is somebody who, at the start of our story, is partnered with Esai and represents this malevolent force that Ethan is opposed to. "

Other notable new additions to the cast include Cary Elwes, Indira Varma, Shea Whigam, Rob Delaney, and Mark Gatiss. After appearing as the villain in the last two movies, it doesn't appear as though Sean Harris will return as Solomon Lane in Mission: Impossible 7 .

Mission: Impossible 7 Story Details

Much like the details of Ethan Hunt's missions over the years , Mission Impossible: Dead Reckoning Part 1 updates have been kept quite secret at the moment. For the first few sequels, the Mission: Impossible franchise has generally kept each installment as a standalone adventure. Though Hunt and other characters return, the missions are new. Mission: Impossible — Rogue Nation and Mission: Impossible — Fallout changed that somewhat with Solomon Lane being carried over as the villain. It doesn't appear that Mission: Impossible 7 will connect to those movies, but as part one of the two-part story, it will be setting the stage for potentially the biggest threat Hunt and his team have faced.

The latest trailer for the new Mission: Impossible movie offers a little more insight into the plot while still keeping things vague. There is a lot pointing to Hunt's past coming back to haunt him with Kittridge warning him that he cannot outrun it. It is also revealed that Hunt shares some history with Esai Morales' villain. His character might also hint at the bigger looming threat that can be set up for Mission: Impossible - Dead Recko ning Part 2 as he tells Hunt " You have no idea that power I represent ."

Director Christopher McQuarrie recently confirmed that audiences won't see a romance between Ethan and Ilsa , something that has been teased in previous Mission: Impossible movies. The director explained, “ The simple fact of the matter is you’re not making Mr & Mrs Smith, you’re making Mission: Impossible, and so the challenge comes in creating a relationship that is always evolving and never quite reaching what is a somewhat mundane resolution. "

Mission: Impossible 7 Trailer

The Mission: Impossible 7 update that fans have been waiting a long time for, the latest Mission: Impossible - Dead Reckoning Part 1 trailer has arrived. Once again, the footage keeps the specifics of the plot rather vague and instead focuses on the intense action sequences that fans have come to expect from this franchise. However, the footage also reiterates the danger of this mission with the antagonists of the movie, Esai Morales and Henry Czerny reiterating how Ethan Hunt is risking losing everything with this latest mission. Of course, that in no way means that Hunt is going to back down.

The second full-length trailer for Mission: Impossible - Dead Reckoning Part 1 has been released, and while it doesn't shed too much light on the plot, it succeeds in getting fans excited to return to the high-octane action franchise. Once again, the footage shows off Mission: Impossible 7 's motorcycle stunt but it also puts emphasis on the equally exciting train sequence that looks to be the climax of the movie. In terms of the story, it hints at Hunt's past coming back to haunt him while also showing Hunt putting himself on the line to protect his team, saying " Your life will always matter more to me than my own ."

The newly released behind-the-scenes featurette for Mission: Impossible - Dead Reckoning Part 1 gives a more detailed look at the praised sequence that was screened at Cinemacon - the Rome car chase. The featurette details how Cruise committed to the sequence by actually training to drive one-handed while handcuffed to another person. The clip also showcases the tiny yellow Fiat that was tampered with to make faster. McQuarrie explains in the featurette that everything in the scene is completely practical and that it was the hardest thing he's ever hard to shoot, which is a big claim from the man who has shot HALO jumps and Cruise hanging off the edge of a plane.

MISSION: IMPOSSIBLE - GHOST PROTOCOL

Tom Cruise ‘s seventh globe-trotting journey as Ethan Hunt will be called “Mission: Impossible – Dead Reckoning Part One.”

Paramount Pictures revealed the tentpole’s official title during its Thursday presentation at CinemaCon , the annual trade show for theater owners. Cruise, who is usually a regular presence at the convention in Las Vegas, wasn’t in attendance. Though in fairness, he attended last year’s CinemaCon to talk up the death-defying stunts in “ Mission: Impossible 7 ” before the movie’s release date was pushed back by a year due to COVID-19. At that time, he was most excited about driving a motorcycle off a cliff in Norway, an antic he called “far and away the most dangerous thing I’ve attempted.”

Audiences got a sneak preview of that anxiety-inducing moment — and more — in the high-stakes trailer, which hasn’t been made available to the public. His stunts have gotten so outrageous that everyone in the room laughed when Ethan Hunt nose dives off a cliff while on his motorcycle and then free-falls into the abyss. General audiences will be able to watch the teaser in front of “Top Gun: Maverick,” which hits theaters on May 27.

Though plot details for “MI7” are mostly ambiguous, Hunt and his team of operatives are again faced with an existential threat. The trailer was stuffed with action-packed footage, including vintage-looking trains flying off tracks, deadly emerald-colored clouds of biochemical weapons, and plenty of brutal street combat.

“You’re fighting to save an ideal that doesn’t exist…. never did,” Henry Czerny’s character Eugene Kittridge, the former director of the IMF, tells Hunt. “You need to pick a side.”

Since he was not at Caesars Palace, Cruise sent along a pre-recorded video that was basically unintelligible because the actor was hanging from an airplane. “Please enjoy,” he told the audience. “And hey! Let’s try to have a great summer.”

Cruise loomed large over Paramount’s three-hour presentation; the studio devoted nearly the entire time to screening his other high-profile blockbuster, “Top Gun: Maverick,” a sequel to the 1986 action adventure. Thursday’s screening marks the first time a wide audience will see the movie, which is going to the Cannes Film Festival next month.

Christopher McQuarrie returns to direct “Mission: Impossible – 7” after steering the franchise’s fifth and sixth installment — 2015’s “Rogue Nation” and 2018’s “Fallout.” The latter became the highest-grossing entry in the long-running series, grossing nearly $800 million at the global box office.

The “Mission: Impossible” films have grossed over $3.5 billion at the worldwide box office since 1996. The popular spy series hit a low with 2006’s “Mission: Impossible III,” which generated only $398 million worldwide. But Cruise successfully revived the property with 2011’s “Mission: Impossible – Ghost Protocol,” which earned $695 million globally and stood as the top-earning entry until “Fallout” was released.

Along with Cruise, who once again stars as an IMF agent known to occasionally hang off airplanes and skyscrapers, “MI” veterans Ving Rhames, Henry Czerny, Simon Pegg, Rebecca Ferguson, Vanessa Kirby and Frederick Schmidt will also return. Newcomers to the franchise include Hayley Atwell, Pom Klementieff, Shea Whigham, Esai Morales, Rob Delaney, Charles Parnell, Indira Varma, Mark Gatiss and Cary Elwes.

“MI7,” which has been delayed several times during the pandemic, is scheduled to open in theaters on July 14, 2023. “Dead Reckoning Part Two,” as it will presumably be called, is set to be released on June 28, 2024.

‘Mission: Impossible 7’ Updates: The New Trailer, Release Date & More About ‘Dead Reckoning Part 1’

Tom Cruise is back in action as Ethan Hunt in 'Mission: Impossible 7.' From the new trailer to the cast, HollywoodLife has all the latest news about the movie.

  • Mission: Impossible 7  stars Tom Cruise as IMF agent Ethan Hunt.
  • The film also stars Hayley Atwell, Esai Morales, Vanessa Kirby, and more.
  • The film releases in theaters on July 12, 2023.

The Mission: Impossible movies have been a theater staple since 1996. After the box office and critical success of 2018’s  Mission: Impossible — Fallout , Mission: Impossible 7 , which is officially titled  Mission: Impossible — Dead Reckoning Part One , is one of the most highly-anticipated upcoming movies. Due to the COVID-19 pandemic, the wait for the seventh Mission: Impossible movie has been a long one, but Tom Cruise has game-changing plans.

Mission: Impossible 7 will include the franchise’s most dangerous stunts yet. The official trailer was released May 17 and features Tom riding a motorcycle ride off a massive cliff. Tom also fights Esai Morales  on the top of a moving train. The action spy movie will  be welcoming new cast members like Esai, Hayley Atwell , and more.

Mission Impossible 7

Mission: Impossible — Dead Reckoning Part One  is Tom’s first big film following  Top Gun: Maverick . The sequel to 1986’s  Top Gun  grossed over $1.4 billion worldwide, becoming the highest-grossing film of 2022. Tom is definitely aiming to accomplish the same with his next Mission Impossible  film. From the release date to the cast, here’s everything you need to know about  Mission Impossible 7.

When Is ‘Mission: Impossible 7’ Coming Out?

Mission: Impossible — Dead Reckoning Part One  will be released in theaters on July 12, 2023. The release date changed a total of five times due to COVID-19-related production shutdowns. Filming was set to begin in February 2020 in Venice, Italy, but production was delayed due to the pandemic until September 2020. Three months later, Tom went off on two crew members for standing too close on set and breaking COVID-19 guidelines. “We are the gold standard. They’re back there in Hollywood making movies right now because of us,” Tom was heard saying in audio obtained by The Sun . “Because they believe in us and what we’re doing. I’m on the phone with every f**king studio at night, insurance companies, producers and they’re looking at us and using us to make their movies. We are creating thousands of jobs, you motherf**kers. I don’t ever want to see it again. Ever!”

Tom later defended his rant in an interview with Empire , according to the Los Angeles Times . “I said what I said,” he told the magazine and added, “There was a lot at stake at that point.” He clarified that he was not yelling at the entire crew but “select people” who were not following COVID-19 safety guidelines.

Tom Cruise

Months later in June 2021, production was paused after an unknown number of positive COVID-19 tests came back. “We have temporarily halted production on  Mission: Impossible 7 until June 14th, due to positive coronavirus test results during routine testing. We are following all safety protocols and will continue to monitor the situation,” a spokesperson for Paramount Pictures said in a statement to EW . Filming officially concluded by September 2021.

What’s The Storyline?

The official description for Mission: Impossible 7 reads, “Ethan Hunt (Tom Cruise) and his IMF team embark on their most dangerous mission yet: To track down a terrifying new weapon that threatens all of humanity before it falls into the wrong hands. With control of the future and the fate of the world at stake, and dark forces from Ethan’s past closing in, a deadly race around the globe begins. Confronted by a mysterious, all-powerful enemy, Ethan is forced to consider that nothing can matter more than his mission – not even the lives of those he cares about most.”

In the teaser trailer for the film, Eugene tells Ethan he needs to “pick a side,” hinting that an all-out war is coming. There’s tons of action scenes like a wild car chase and a crazy train derailment.

The official trailer shows Ethan beginning a mission that may “cost him dearly.” Esai Morale’s character is set up as the big villain who is Ethan’s biggest threat yet. “If anything happens to them, there’s no place that I won’t go to kill you. He directed the actor in films like Jack Reacher and helped write other Cruise films like Valkyrie , Edge of Tomorrow , The Mummy , and Top Gun: Maverick .

Going into Mission: Impossible 7 , Christopher wanted to make the film an “emotional” one across the board. “When we went into making Fallout , I said to Tom, ‘I really want to make this more of an emotional journey for [Cruise’s character Ethan Hunt],’ ” he said on the Light the Fuse podcast. “Going into this, I said, ‘I want to take what we learned from Fallout  and apply it to every character in the movie. I want everyone to have an emotional arc. … I just want the movie to have more feeling across the board.”

Tom Cruise Hayley Atwell

Tom and Christopher are the main producers on Mission: Impossible 7 .  Fraser Taggart  is the cinematographer,  Eddie Hamilton  is the editor, and  Lorne Balfe  composed the score. The full cast for the seventh film will be returning, while Christopher is directing and writing the movie. Filming officially began on March 24, 2022.  Mission: Impossible 8  will be the final film to feature Tom Cruise as Ethan Hunt. It hasn’t been confirmed if the franchise will still continue without Tom starting with  Mission: Impossible 9 .

There's been conflicting reports about whether Mission: Impossible – Dead Reckoning Part One is the first of a two-part finale to the overall series . Could this mission be one that not even Ethan can solve?

But what we do know is that Mission: Impossible 8 is on the way next year, so it's fair to assume that not everything will be resolved in the new movie. (Let's hope there's not a Fast X -style cliffhanger though.)

Now that the movie is out now in cinemas, here's everything you need to know about Mission: Impossible – Dead Reckoning Part One .

Mission Impossible 7 runtime: How long is Mission Impossible Dead Reckoning Part One?

It has been confirmed that Mission: Impossible 7 runs for 163 minutes and 13 seconds or two hours and 43 minutes.

Even though it's the first of a two-part story, Mission: Impossible 7 does not have a credit scene of any kind, so there's nothing to wait around for .

We'll have to wait until the first footage of the sequel to get a tease of what's to come.

After several release date delays, Mission: Impossible 7 arrived in UK cinemas on July 10, two days ahead of its US release on July 12.

It was initially scheduled for release on July 23, 2021, and was delayed several times after that from November 19, 2021 to May 27, 2022, and then another delay to September 30, 2022.

The movie itself wrapped filming in September 2021, which makes you think it would have been able to hit its target. However, with all the shifts in the industry at large, it's unsurprising it continued to shift.

The sequel has not been without is controversy though, with the reported destruction of a 111-year-old bridge , as well as that on-set rant from Tom Cruise .

Given the delays, Mission: Impossible 8 (aka Mission: Impossible – Dead Reckoning Part Two ) also moved and now will be released on June 28, 2024. (Assuming that the current writers' strike doesn't affect anything.)

The first trailer for Mission: Impossible – Dead Reckoning Part One was released way back in May 2022, paired with Top Gun: Maverick in cinemas.

Tom Cruise is, of course, back as Ethan Hunt for his seventh mission, and he'll be joined by a lot of familiar faces.

Ving Rhames and Simon Pegg are back as IMF agents Luther Stickell and Benji Dunn, respectively, while Rebecca Ferguson returns as the enigmatic former MI6 agent Ilsa Faust and Vanessa Kirby is also back as arms dealer Alanna Mitsopolis, aka the White Widow.

Frederick Schmidt will also return as Alanna's brother Zola, but while we had been expecting Angela Bassett back as CIA director Erika Sloane, she had to drop out due to scheduling conflicts .

A surprise return comes in the form of Henry Czerny's Eugene Kittridge , the former director of the IMF who we last saw way back in the first Mission: Impossible movie. McQuarrie said that his return had been thought about since Rogue Nation.

henry czerny, mission impossible – dead reckoning part one teaser trailer

"Early in this process I had an inkling that there could be a place for Kittridge – the tone of the movie, the shape of the movie lent itself to that. I realised, 'Kittridge has got to be in this scene'," he explained .

"I had written it not knowing who was in it, and then suddenly Kittridge came into it and the scene was transformed, it was really fun. I got to call Henry Czerny and say, 'You're in! Will you be in it?' He was great about it."

Nicholas Hoult was set to be the new movie's main villain , but schedule clashes meant he had to drop out and was replaced by Ozark star Esai Morales to take over the role of Gabriel.

Another major newcomer to the world is Hayley Atwell as Grace, who has been described by McQuarrie as a "destructive force of nature". It's not clear whether she'll be on IMF's side or if her priorities are more ambiguous .

"The interesting thing we're exploring is her resistance to a situation she finds herself in," Atwell teased. "How she starts off, where she becomes. The journey of what she comes into and what is asked of her and potentially where she ends up."

The new movie also stars Pom Klementieff as Gabriel's assassin Paris, Shea Whigham and Greg Tarzan Davis as government agents Briggs and Degas, and Cary Elwes as Denlinger, director of national intelligence.

Rob Delaney, Indira Varma, Mark Gatiss and Charles Parnell make up the members of The Community, which appears to be a cross-agency board that decides US policy.

A last-minute addition to the movie was former EastEnders star Alex James Phelps who, according to McQuarrie, helped to smooth out a potential plot issue.

Since we know Mission: Impossible 8 is coming, some of the supporting cast have already been confirmed to return in the next instalment, including Vanessa Kirby and Hayley Atwell .

We've also had our first looks already at some new cast members for the eighth movie, including Holt McCallany , Janet McTeer and Nick Offerman .

And although he definitely won't be in the seventh movie, Henry Cavill could be set for a surprise return as the villainous August Walker, aka John Lark, in the eighth movie despite his apparent death in Fallout .

"There is no such thing as death in movies, only unavailability," teased McQuarrie to The Hollywood Reporter of Cavill's return.

Could we see Jeremy Renner back as IMF agent William Brandt? The star missed out on Fallout due to his Marvel commitments at the time of filming , but the character is still alive in the Mission: Impossible world so watch this space.

As with Mission: Impossible – Rogue Nation and Mission: Impossible – Fallout , the new movie (and the eighth movie) has been written and directed by Christopher McQuarrie.

We might have seen the trailers, we're still unclear exactly what the new movie will be about, other than it'll obviously feature Ethan Hunt doing something he probably shouldn't, while avoiding authority figures and other rogues.

As mentioned before, it's only the first part of a two-part story and there's a good reason for that .

"Going into this, I said, 'I want to take what we learned from Fallout and apply it to every character in the movie. I want everyone to have an emotional arc... I just want the movie to have more feeling across the board," McQuarrie explained.

"We know that with the addition of extra characters and the addition of storylines for the team, the movie's gonna be three hours long. In reality that means with us doing it it will be 3 ½.

"Who are we kidding? Let's just call it four, cut it in half and make it two movies. Now, the story can just kind of breathe."

Whether that means the seventh movie will end with a major cliffhanger, a la Avengers: Infinity War , remains to be seen.

vanessa kirby, mission impossible – dead reckoning part one teaser trailer

As for that ominous title, McQuarrie has explained that too . "There are many things emerging from Ethan's past," he said of the new movie.

" Dead Reckoning is a navigational term. It means you're picking a course based solely on your last known position and that becomes quite the metaphor not only for Ethan, but several characters."

One thing we can guarantee though is that Ethan Hunt will be getting himself into crazy situations that involved Cruise carrying out some major stunts. Even for the star, he undertook a seriously dangerous stunt for the new movie .

It sees him ride a motorcycle off a large ramp atop a cliff, launch from the bike and parachute safely to the ground. "If the wind was too strong, it would blow me off the ramp," Cruise recalled .

"The helicopter [filming the stunt] was a problem, because I didn't want to be hammering down that ramp at top speed and get hit by a stone... I had about six seconds once I departed the ramp to pull the chute and I don't want to get tangled in the bike. If I do, that's not going to end well."

Fortunately, Cruise survived the shoot without any major injuries unlike that time on Fallout when he broke his ankle .

Mission: Impossible – Dead Reckoning Part One is out now in cinemas.

Giant screens, a gang dressed in the full, black Mission: Impossible look, a red carpet in a semicircle, with Tom Cruise standing at the top of the Spanish Steps in Rome with the entire Piazza di Spagna below him, watching every move and hanging on every word.

Before kicking off his red carpet marathon, in which he seemed determined to greet every single guest, Cruise reminded the crowd of “how important it is to show not only that you can still make movies but also that you can get back to filling theaters after the most difficult time the world, and this art form, has been through.”

Cruise recalled how Mission: Impossible – Dead Reckoning Part One was shot in Venice and Rome “in full COVID. “It was very important to do that to show everyone that the pandemic was not going to kill cinema,” he said. “I have to thank everyone, with our very strict safety protocols and the help of this country, together we did something extraordinary.”

Looking down from the Spanish Steps, Cruise recalled a scene the film shot in this iconic landmark.

“We turned this wonderful square, for a day, into an open-air set when we shot here and it was fantastic,” he said. “We did it by closing it off to the public, and I admit it’s one of those things that I regularly ask studios for.”

Nearly 61 years old, Cruise has not lost his childlike smile, or, he admits, his youthful ambition. “Ever since I was a child I used to look at the tallest buildings, the skyscrapers, and imagine how to climb them, or even better, how to get down from the top to the ground. Without using ladders, of course, but also without losing my life,” he added. “I think it’s that childhood dream that always pushes me further and makes me face these challenges myself.”

Cruise’s race through downtown Rome, in a vintage yellow Fiat 500, in the new Mission: Impossible seems destined to become part of the collective cinematic imagination. The mad dash between Rione Monti, Via dei Serpenti lapping Colle Oppio, through the streets around Santa Maria Maggiore before taking the less conventional descent down the Trinità dei Monti staircase, skidding to a halt at the bottom of the Spanish Steps. “I love Rome, it’s a wonderful city. I’m completely crazy about it and it’s been great to work here,” he said. “I thank you for welcoming me and how well it has allowed us to work.”

Tom Cruise, Simon Pegg, Rebecca Ferguson, and Ving Rhames speed through Venice on a boat

Breaking Down All the Cast and Characters (Who Will Either Try to Blow up or Help Tom Cruise) In ‘Mission: Impossible 7′

Image of Brittany Knupper

Twitter exploded this past week when the trailer for the new Mission: Impossible sequel (with the ludicrously long title Mission: Impossible – Dead Reckoning – Part One ) was leaked! The trailer had everything one could want from an MI film—car chases, sword fights, Rebecca Ferguson in an eye patch, explosions, Tom Cruise using his body as a crash test dummy, and did I mention Rebecca Ferguson in an eye patch??

But, alongside the over-the-top stunt work, we also got a little peek at all of the new and returning characters that will be attempting to either blow up or help Tom Cruise’s iconic IMF character. So let’s dust off our latex face masks, pull on our tactile-necks, and dig back into the trenches of the Mission Impossible universe.

Where we last left off

Not that it particularly matters—because no one is watching the Mission Impossible franchise for the plot—but when last left Hunt and the IMF crew, he had just finished stopping Solomon Lane (head of The Syndicate) from exploding nuclear warheads and contaminating all of the water on the Asian continent, or something. Lane was turned over to MI6, Henry Cavill’s traitorous Walker was presumably killed in a helicopter explosion, and Angela Bassett’s Sloane was going to be made the new secretary of the IMF. Of course, that was back in 2018, and things can change abruptly in Spy-land!

Returning characters

Henry Czerny as IMF director Kittridge

Obviously, Tom Cruise is back as IMF agent Ethan Hunt! And he seems to be in full form as we watch him race through tiny European streets in tinier European cars, sprinting across a runaway train, and riding a motorcycle off a cliff! This is what the Mission Impossible franchise is all about! We don’t come for the plot, we come for Cruise doing increasingly dangerous and mindblowing stuntwork!

The rest of Hunt’s IMF squad is also back, which means we will get more of Simon Pegg as technical field agent Benji Dunn, Ving Rhames as Hunt’s original team member (going back to 1996!), and hacker, Luther Stickell. We will also see the return of one of Twitter’s favorite girlfriends, Rebecca Ferguson, as MI6 agent and Hunt ally, Ilsa Faust! And gird your loins everyone, because in some shots she’s wearing an eyepatch. And on the villainous side, Vanessa Kirby is returning as the White Widow!

The trailer also revealed the return of a surprising ghost from Hunt’s past. Henry Czerny is back as Eugene Kittridge. Kittridge was the IMF director in the very first Mission Impossible film (all the way back in the olden days of 1996). In the first film, Kittridge was convinced that Hunt was the mole after the “NOC List” (a list of all the spies and their aliases around the globe). Hunt escaped his capture in a very normal way by smashing his explosive gum against an aquarium wall and escaping through the water and fish. And based on this trailer, it would seem that Kittridge and Hunt are still at odds. Is Kittridge back in charge of the IMF or has he finally gone rogue?

Hayley Atwell running through a train station in MI7

Joining the franchise with this film, we have Esai Morales as a potential antagonist (we see him sword fighting with Ferguson across a bridge in one quick shot), along with Captain Carter herself—Hayley Atwell! Morales’ character name has not yet been revealed, and all we know of Atwell’s character is that her name is “Grace” and that according to an interview given on the Light the Fuse podcast, screenwriter Christopher McQuarrie described her as “a destructive force of nature!”

Shea Wigham ( The Wolf of Wall Street ) will also be joining the fun as Jasper Briggs, a man trying to hunt down Hunt across this film and the next. According to EW he let slip that “you’ll see over the course of seven and eight why I’m trying to track Ethan Hunt. It’s one of the best things I’ve ever got a chance to be a part of.”

Other new cast members include Pom Klementieff ( Guardians of the Galaxy ), Carey Elwes ( The Princess Bride ), comedian Rob Delaney, Mar Gatiss ( Sherlock ), and Indira Varma ( Game of Thrones ). Nothing is known about their characters yet, but stay tuned for more information as we get closer to 2023 and the release of Mission: Impossible – Dead Reckoning – Part One !

Mission: Impossible Star Says They Hid Alcohol Problem From Tom Cruise

Mission: Impossible  star Simon Pegg says he kept his alcoholism a secret from Tom Cruise while filming the third installment in the spy franchise . The actor, who portrays technical field agent Benji Dunn, made the revelation during a radio interview with BBC's  Desert Island Discs  via  Deadline.  "You become very sneaky when you have something like that in your life," the British star told listeners.

"You learn how to do it without anyone noticing because it takes over. It wants to sustain itself, and it will do everything it can to not be stopped. But eventually, it just gets to a point when it can't be hidden, and that's when, thankfully, I was able to pull out of the dive." -Simon Pegg

Fortunately, Simon Pegg is in recovery and also chatted about his friendship with Tom Cruise. The Star Trek alum says he sometimes teases his  Mission: Impossible  co-star for his unique level of fame. "We joke about it. I mean, I always make fun of him for it. About the things that he can access… he appreciates the ridiculousness of it sometimes," he added.

The  Mission Impossible  actor described his friendship with Tom Cruise as simple and amiable. "It's always been a very easy relationship, Simon Pegg explained. "I think you realize when you meet the person rather than the thicket of mythology that's built up around them, it's a different experience," the British star continued.

Simon Pegg debuted as Benji Dunn in 2006's  Mission: Impossible III . He reprised the role in  Mission: Impossible – Ghost Protocol, Mission: Impossible – Rogue Nation,  and  Mission: Impossible – Fallout.  The actor will reprise the role in the upcoming films  Dead Reckoning Part One  and  Part Two,  set for release in 2023 and 2024, respectively.

The 53-year has also lent his voice to Buck in the animated film series Ice Age. His voice can be heard in  Ice Age: Dawn of the Dinosaurs, Scrat's Continental Crack-up, Ice Age: Collision Course,  and  The Ice Age Adventures of Buck Wild.  Simon Pegg's appearance in the latter made him the only actor to reprise a role from previous films.

Mission: Impossible – Dead Reckoning Part One  will hit theatres on July 12. Written and directed by Christopher McQuarrie, the film is the seventh installment in the action franchise. Along with Tom Cruise and Simon Pegg, the movie will see Ving Rhames, Rebecca Ferguson, Vanessa Kirby, and Henry Czerny reprise their roles from previous films.

Although the plot remains under wraps, the story will be told over the next two installments of Mission: Impossible, bringing Ethan Hunt's saga to an end. The final mission will see Tom Cruise's secret agent return to the beginning in an epic emotional journey. Ethan Hunt was last seen tracking down missing plutonium after a failed job.

A few new faces will join the  Mission: Impossible – Dead Reckoning Part One  cast. This includes Hayley Atwell, Pom Klementieff , Shea Whigham, Esai Morales, Rob Delaney, Charles Parnell, Indira Varma, Mark Gatiss, and Cary Elwes. Nick Offerman and Janet McTeer will appear  in Mission: Impossible – Dead Reckoning Part Two .

Mission: Impossible – Dead Reckoning Part One  has already been through a few screen tests with rave reviews from those in attendance. However, President of Paramount Global, Bob Bakish, told the 2023 Morgan Stanley Technology, Media, & Telecom Conference that the Tom Cruise film should be cut down . "I haven't seen all of MI: 7, but I've seen a bunch of it. It's still too long [so] they've got to cut it."

"But the movie is insane. It's like a complete thrill ride. And Tom Cruise, he's very good," Bakish added. Meanwhile, the sequel,  Mission: Impossible – Dead Reckoning Part Two,  will hit theaters on June 28, 2024.

The 10 Best Quotes in the Mission: Impossible Movies, Ranked

"Your mission, should you choose to accept it, is to find the best dialogue from the Mission: Impossible series."

Given how many thrills, stunts, chase sequences, and fight scenes are featured throughout the Mission: Impossible film series, it’s understandable that the dialogue might not be the first thing people think about when reflecting on the (so far) seven movies. And sure, if the series lacked amazing action, the character interactions, over-the-top villainous threats, and various bits of banter might not be enough to carry such a long-running set of films.

But there nevertheless remains good dialogue to be found throughout the Mission: Impossible movies, and its most memorable quotes can serve as more than solid icing to an already delicious and jam-packed cake . Including at least one from every movie in the series so far, the following all rank as some of the best quotes from the Mission: Impossible films, roughly ranked by memorability.

10 “Relax Luther, it's much worse than you think.”

‘mission: impossible’ (1996).

Mission: Impossible was originally a TV series that aired during the late 1960s and early 1970s, with the film series – serving as a reboot – beginning in 1996, helmed by Brian De Palma . It was a key movie in furthering Tom Cruise’s stardom, and while he’d been in some high-profile stuff in the years before Mission: Impossible , it was this series that really solidified him as an action movie star.

The original 1996 movie introduces Cruise’s Ethan Hunt, as well as a handful of side characters who show up in subsequent entries in the series, most notably Ving Rhames' Luther Stickell, the only character (besides Hunt) to be in each movie so far . And Mission: Impossible (1996) works well to establish both Hunt’s rebellious qualities and his dynamic with Luther, casually remarking to him that a plan Luther has doubts about is actually “much worse” than he thinks.

9 “It's not like any mission is gonna be rougher than the last one, is it?”

‘mission: impossible - ghost protocol’ (2011).

Tempting fate and being dangerously self-aware in the process , Benji ( Simon Pegg ) says this about the IMf’s latest impossible mission in the series’ fourth entry overall, Mission: Impossible - Ghost Protocol . It may indeed mark a point where things get rougher and more difficult for the characters, but the films certainly aren’t rough to watch at this point from a viewer’s perspective.

Indeed, there’s an argument to be made that Ghost Protocol was the best of the Mission: Impossible movies made up until that point, and still stands to this day as one of the best. Cruise started to gain a reputation at this stage in the series for pushing himself particularly hard when it came to the stunts he’d perform, with the entire Burj Khalifa sequence proving particularly memorable and jaw-dropping.

Mission: Impossible - Ghost Protocol

8 “why won't you just die”, ‘mission: impossible – fallout’ (2018).

The Mission: Impossible series has always felt like Tom Cruise’s, but aforementioned side characters, like Benji and Luther, have had ample opportunities to shine and steal certain scenes. Additionally, the series has been home to some pretty great villains , with Mission: Impossible – Fallout pitting Ethan Hunt against someone who’s more than his equal, physically speaking: August Walker, played by a memorably mustached Henry Cavill .

Walker and Hunt are uneasy allies early on, and then clash after the former’s true intentions are revealed, leading to an amazing action-packed final act that sees them engage in a helicopter chase and a brutal brawl on the side of a cliff. Walker’s frustrations with Hunt’s determination and seeming invulnerability are apparent when he questions the man’s sheer willpower, and indeed, it’s unlikely audiences will see Ethan Hunt die, unless Tom Cruise decides he wants to retire the character and move away from the franchise.

Mission: Impossible - Fallout

7 “there was never any physical evidence i had anything to do with that... that... that exceptional piece of work.”.

As mentioned before, the first Mission: Impossible series lays the groundwork for what’s to come in a number of ways, but it should also be qualified that it nevertheless stands out from its sequels in other ways. For one thing, it’s perhaps more of a thriller than an action/adventure movie , with a focus on suspense and tension-building that emphasizes the series’ spy/espionage roots more than any other film.

This does mean that dialogue perhaps plays a more significant role, in some ways, than later films, or it could well be that fewer gunfights and explosions ensure there’s more room, sonically, for dialogue to be heard. Luther certainly gets a chance to shine and establish himself as a key supporting player for the series, denying his involvement in a previous computer hack before, in the same sentence, realizing he’d rather take credit for it.

6 “Join the IMF! See the world! On a monitor. In a closet.”

‘mission: impossible - rogue nation’ (2015).

Mission: Impossible - Rogue Nation was something of a turning point for the Mission: Impossible series. Though the first four movies had mostly delivered, they’d also all been defined by the fact that each one was helmed by a different director. Rogue Nation was the first time Christopher McQuarrie directed an entry in the series , and he went on to direct the next two (additionally, Rebecca Ferguson’s character, Ilsa Faust, was introduced here, and had a prominent role in the following two movies).

That all means there has been a certain consistency to the series since 2015, but that’s far from a bad thing, with the action sequences arguably getting more impressive while the character dynamics/banter/humor from earlier movies were retained. Benji gets to memorably complain about his status as the team’s tech guy, for example , claiming that things are less of an adventure when he’s reduced to seeing exotic locales “on a monitor” that’s “in a closet.”

Mission: Impossible - Rogue Nation

5 “what's done is done when we say it's done.”.

It’s a testament to Tom Cruise that he can convincingly deliver lines that sound ridiculous on paper, yet his conviction makes them sing. Case in point, the kind of nonsensical claim Ethan Hunt drops in Mission: Impossible – Fallout , when another character dares to throw a “what’s done is done” at him. Hunt, being Hunt, retorts: “What's done is done when we say it's done.”

To Ethan Hunt’s credit, he makes good on this boastful remark, saving the world yet again and getting his core team through the events of the film in one piece… well, Alec Baldwin’s Alan Hunley is a casualty, admittedly. But wouldn’t you know it, he’s the one who suggested “what’s done is done.” Never bet against Ethan Hunt, is the moral of the story. Similarly, never doubt Tom Cruise’s ability to sell the most over-the-top of action movie lines .

4 “If anything happens to them, there's no place you and your God will be safe. There's no place that I won't go to kill you. That is written.”

‘mission: impossible - dead reckoning part one’ (2023).

Even though Mission: Impossible - Dead Reckoning Part One quite surprisingly under-performed at the box office, it was still a great action/thriller movie, and one of the most exciting of the decade so far . Its scale was larger than any previous film, and it found an interesting antagonist for Ethan Hunt and his team to combat: a rogue AI program known as the Entity.

The Entity uses a man named Gabriel to carry out various physical tasks, because Tom Cruise can’t exactly shoot at/punch/kick an AI program . Gabriel’s a worthy adversary, physically and psychologically speaking, taunting Hunt by saying he and his friends aren’t safe, and getting him to reply with a severe: “There's no place that I won't go to kill you” if anything bad were to happen. Of course, bad things do happen, setting the stage for what will likely be an intense showdown/rematch in an upcoming eighth Mission: Impossible movie .

Mission: Impossible - Dead Reckoning Part One

3 benji: “easy way to remember: blue is glue.” ethan: “and when it's red” benji: “dead.”.

As mentioned before, Mission: Impossible - Ghost Protocol peaks with the Burj Khalifa scene, particularly the part where Tom Cruise climbs the structure , itself an all-time great action sequence . But this part of the movie also shines because it’s as funny as it is intense, with a ridiculously convoluted series of events leading Ethan Hunt to take part in this dangerous activity, with the whole set-up really being pretty funny.

This is emphasized during an exchange between Hunt and Benji, where the latter tells the former the easiest way to remember how his high-tech gloves – used to scale the Burj Khalifa – work. It’s well-delivered by the actors and economical screen-writing, when you think about it, being a humorous exchange in the moment while also expertly establishing the stakes of the scene to come, naturally making it more intense when things (inevitably) go wrong during Hunt’s daring ascent.

2 “You know, that was the hardest part about having to portray you, grinning like an idiot every fifteen minutes.”

‘mission: impossible ii’ (2000).

A Mission: Impossible movie directed by John Woo might’ve seemed too good to be true, because the closest thing the series has to a weak link is probably Mission: Impossible II . That being said, this follow-up to the original film still isn’t bad, especially when approached with the knowledge that it will be a particularly over-the-top and silly action movie. It’s a movie with its charms , so long as you know what you’re in for.

And even if the movie itself has its flaws, it still sneaks in one of the best and funniest lines in the entire series. Mission: Impossible II’s main villain, Sean Ambrose ( Dougray Scott ), has a pretty savage putdown directed at Ethan Hunt, referencing the rather silly (yet iconic) face masks that are a series staple . Ambrose’s quip about having to continually “grin like an idiot” also feels like it could be a cheeky jab at Tom Cruise himself, who does have a famed/notorious smile in r eal life .

Mission: Impossible II

1 “do you have a wife a girlfriend because if you do, i'm gonna find her. i'm gonna hurt her. i'm gonna make her bleed, and cry, and call out your name. and then i'm gonna find you, and kill you right in front of her.”, ‘mission: impossible iii’ (2006).

For as good as August Walker and the Entity/Gabriel were, the best villain to appear in a Mission: Impossible movie so far is probably Owen Davian, played by the legendary Philip Seymour Hoffman . He’s a force to be reckoned with in the overall pretty solid Mission: Impossible III , elevating the entire film considerably with a level of malice and cruelty that feels somewhat at odds with some of the other villains in the series.

Hoffman plays an arms dealer who clashes with Ethan Hunt in the film, and establishes his hatred for Hunt rather plainly when he threatens to torment, torture, and kill whoever Hunt holds dearest to his heart. If the intention was to take Mission: Impossible III into darker and less campy territory after Mission: Impossible II with a genuinely cruel villain, then this quote demonstrates, unequivocally, a mission accomplished.

All the summer movie release dates in one handy calendar.

tom cruise mission impossible 7 cast

This summer's hottest club (*in Saturday Night Live Stefon voice*) is... the movie theater! It's got everything: multiple multiverses, Tom Cruise destroying a train, a de-aged Harrison Ford (!?!?), an atomic bomb, Ryan Gosling Ken-ergy, air conditioning, and Megs. What are Megs? They're like Godzilla-sized sharks except Jason Statham randomly drop-kicks them in the face.

Summer movies in 2023 are bringing the hottest hyphenated titles — from Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse to Mission: Impossible — Dead Reckoning Part One — to the big screen over the next couple months, alongside the latest from Christopher Nolan , Pixar , and DC .

EW has your handy guide to the summer movie schedule — and some exclusive new looks.
