Meet the Jewish BFFs Behind Indie Dream-Pop Band TOLEDO

Alma chatted with the duo about their latest single "david," recording in their parents' attic during the pandemic, and their favorite famous davids..

toledo

That banter is the product of longstanding friendship. Alvarez and Dunn-Pilz, both Jewish, met in their small coastal hometown of Newburyport, Massachusetts while busking when they were 10 years old. Though they parted ways for college, they continued to trade long-distance voice notes throughout and ultimately reunited as TOLEDO. “Individually, we’re a mess,” says Dan. “But as a pair, our strongest qualities reveal themselves.” Supposedly Dan is the wildcard and Jordan’s the sensible one.

The project has found significant success: Their debut EP, “Hotstuff,” released in 2019, has over 4 million streams on Spotify to date. They also recently played a livestream concert for Consequence of Sound alongside Julien Baker, Dirty Projectors and Beach Bunny, among others. But like many musicians , Dan and Jordan found themselves recording very differently in 2020 . When the pandemic hit, both went home to Newburyport with most of their studio equipment, which they set up in Dan’s parents’ attic. Dan was starting a new relationship, while Jordan’s was ending. Those feelings swirl around, along with the surreal nostalgia of quarantining in their childhood homes, in their new EP “Jockeys of Love.” They also released two 2020 singles in between projects: “Lovely,” a “tune about settling down,” and “FOMO,” a song which “explores the mental ups and downs of quarantine over a propulsive, time-shifting beat.”

Their latest single, “David,” tries to address the ghosts of family tensions in a loving way. Jordan wrote it for his little brother, and had this to say: “As siblings we share a lot of the same emotional baggage, but we process things differently as individuals. The song came out of a desire for healing in spite of those differences.”

The song doesn’t sound like trauma. It gives lush, nostalgic, summery vibes — like a car ride back from the beach after a bit too much sun with late afternoon light flickering through the window. I heard Sufjan Steven influences in the marriage of indie-folk layers, whisper-singing, and subtle banjo licks. But both affection and pain are palpable in the lyrics:

Hey, what’s with the long one? i’ll be around When it doesn’t go where you wanted i’ll sort it out

Red, turning your temper in to your heart Keep your tongue

David it’s my fault I don’t know this part

to keep it, i’m ripping around I’m planting it down…

Mother’s roses and rhododendron now

Dan and Jordan told me more about the process of writing the song, how it was to record like they did in high school again, and their favorite famous Davids.

Tell me about the genesis of “David,” and how trauma makes its way into your work.

We often use writing as a way to process whatever’s going on emotionally. Sometimes the subject matter is more immediate, and sometimes it’s further in the past or more abstract. The first verse of David just came out while jamming on the chord progression. Rather than taking the song somewhere romantic, we chose to speak to a different kind of love.

What’s your relationship with the real David like now?

It’s all good!

How did David respond to the song?

We had an awkward two-sentence back-and-forth over text where it was never actually admitted. Still working on that open communication thing.

Did you (Dan and Jordan) always write music together? Did you ever have Jewish interactions growing up?

We were introduced through a mutual friend, but even then it was with the intention that we would play music together. We sort of cut out the middleman (sorry Ben) and started writing and recording together in Daniel’s family home. We had many different side projects … lots of hip hop, a cover band, etc. TOLEDO as it is today didn’t come about until college, but it’s always been the two of us writing music together. We were both raised celebrating Jewish holidays, but have yet to celebrate together!

How was it to record this last EP back in your childhood home? Did it affect the music? Do you feel like you captured something nostalgic because of how it was recorded, or something about the strange quarantine reality so many 20-somethings experienced?

Recording during the quarantine was a trip. There was a lot to process. It would have been impossible to capture all that we were feeling. We had a few songs that dealt more head on with that time period. There was a song about isolation, a song about communicating over distance, and a song about feeling small in comparison to the world’s systemic challenges. Ultimately the EP was streamlined to be mostly relational, but we hope these songs can see the light of day eventually.

Was there ever any tension with your parents as you recorded? “You’re making too much noise” vibes?

Happy to say that the parents have always been supportive! We are blessed.

How did you handle being in such different emotional places — one newly in love, one just ending a five-year relationship — as you collaborated?

We’ve been friends for so long and that always takes precedence over our working relationship. We spend more time hanging out and chillaxing than we do writing music. It’s probably safe to say that we’re always in “different places” emotionally as we are different people processing different things, and we always work to meet in the middle when we’re writing.

How do you work together as a duo in general? What’s your process like?

We set out to enjoy what we’re doing! We love to experiment with new equipment and recording techniques. Most of the songs that “stick” were written/recorded very impulsively. This keeps things exciting for us, and that excitement brings out the best in us. If something is stale we might work to revamp it, but oftentimes it’s dead in the water at that point.

Any Jewish songwriters or melodies that inspire you?

The inherent musicality in Judaism is beautiful. We both grew up with our parents singing passages from the Torah, and I know that the melody of the Hanukkah prayer will be etched in our minds forever.

Does Judaism play into your writing/storytelling in any other ways?

Our Jewish upbringings put an emphasis on tradition and family in a way that influences how we go about our lives today. This might seep into our writing in ways that go unnoticed by us.

Go-to karaoke song(s)?

We are huge karaoke guys. Dan’s go-to is usually Britney Spears or “Wicked,” and Jordan’s is The Fray or U2.

Who are your favorite famous Davids?

We both love David Lynch. And David Attenborough. And David Duchovny.

What’s your dream for your musical future? What’s next?

After the year+ we just had, all we want to do is play shows. Dive Bars. Stadiums. Festivals. House Parties. Anything sounds good right now. Hopefully the next step is for us to get on tour!

Dierks Bentley Kicks Off 2024 "Gravel & Gold" Tour

Article contributed by the greenroom | published on tuesday, june 11, 2024.

toledo band tour

Multi-Platinum entertainer Dierks Bentley returned to the road with his GRAVEL & GOLD TOUR presented by Jersey Mike’s this weekend, marking the beginning of summer by filling amphitheaters in Memphis, TN, Fort Worth, TX and Rogers, AR. The “full-scope, no filler concert experience” (City Beat) once again finds Bentley brimming with energy, performing a diverse set list that spans his hit-filled two decade career as well covers of fellow country and bluegrass greats. Larger-than-life production touches perfectly compliment the band’s skilled musicianship, including a massive LED wall with sparkling projections and an on-stage shotski with Dierks. This weekend, Bentley performed fan favorites and his chart-topping reimagination of Tom Petty’s classic “American Girl” along with special collaborations with anticipated opener Chase Rice and honky-tonk newcomer Zach Top. Chase Rice joined Bentley for a melody of two of his most popular No. 1 hit songs, "Somewhere on a Beach" and "Beers On Me", while Zach Top joined Bentley to duet a special cover of the 90s classic, "Old Enough to Know Better." Fans can relive the magic of the weekend HERE and purchase tickets for upcoming GRAVEL & GOLD TOUR dates at Dierks.com .

"There is nothing like the opening weekend of a tour. Seeing all the work that goes into building this rollercoaster of a set and show, come to life, is the greatest feeling. Even after all these years of doing it, I’m reminded every year how insanely fun it is to tour like we do," Bentley says. "I speak for the entire band and crew when I say how much we love and appreciate the fans that come out to be part of these special summer nights and we are so pumped for the rest of the tour."

Last week just hours before launching the tour, Bentley gave Entertainment Tonight a first look at the Gravel & Gold Tour from rehearsals, watch HERE . In addition to Chase Rice and Zach Top, the tour will feature support from Lee Brice and a diverse lineup of special guests including Graham Barham, Tyler Braden, Kaitlin Butts, Mae Estes, Ella Langley, Randy Rogers Band, Tanner Usrey, Bella White and more. The Gravel & Gold Tour will continue this week throughout the Midwest, including shows in Toledo, Noblesville, and Cincinnati. On June 24, Round Records & ATO Records will release GarciaLive Volume Six: July 5, 1973 – Jerry Garcia & Merl Saunders, the latest installment of the celebrated GarciaLive archival series. The three-CD set was recorded at the 200 capacity Lion’s Share club formerly located in the small town of San Anselmo, CA, just 20 miles north of San Francisco. The performance features Jerry Garcia performing with friend, mentor and legendary keyboardist/vocalist Merl Saunders. The duo is joined by drummer Bill Vitt and bassist John Kahn, who soon became a lifelong Garcia collaborator.

From TOLEDO SYMPHONY ORCHESTRA

The Toledo Concert Band featuring members of the Toledo Symphony will perform a free Independence Day concert on Monday, July 4  at 2 p.m., at the Rutherford B. Hayes Presidential Library & Museums in Fremont, Ohio under the direction of Bruce Moss. This year’s performance, sponsored by Hal & Diane Hawk and Crown Battery with additional funding by the City of Fremont, will also be broadcast on television and radio through WGTE.

“People in the community and surrounding region love this patriotic event and look forward to it every year,” says Kristina Smith, Marketing & Communications Manager for the Rutherford B. Hayes Presidential Library & Museums. “We are so grateful to our partners at the Toledo Symphony and Toledo Concert Band for their fantastic performance here and all the behind-the-scenes work they do to make it happen. We are also grateful to WGTE for broadcasting the concert. Having this performance at the home of one of our U.S. presidents on Independence Day is very special.”

The annual concert featuring the Toledo Concert Band has been performed on the verandah of President Rutherford and First Lady Lucy Hayes’ historic home every Fourth of July since 1997. The band will perform a variety of patriotic music, including  Stars and Stripes Forever ,  America the Beautiful , and more, plus Civil War reenactors will punctuate the performance of Tchaikovsky’s  1812 Overture  with real cannon fire. The concert will also be broadcast on   Friday, July 8 at 7PM (FM91) and available to watch on WGTE HD on Sunday, July 10 at 6:30PM. Viewers can listen to the livestream at  wgte.org  and the WGTE app on both dates.

“Without a doubt, Rutherford B. Hayes’ historic home is one of the most picturesque concert locations at which we perform,” says Keith McWatters, Toledo Symphony Orchestra Manager. “It is a beautiful setting and a great way for us to celebrate Independence Day with the entire community, an event we look forward to every year.”

DISTURBED Announce Take Back Your Life 2024 North American Tour With FALLING IN REVERSE, PLUSH

Today, multi-platinum rock band, Disturbed, announces their 23-date Take Back Your Life 2024 North American tour, which will kick off in Peoria, IL on January 19 (full dates below). The tour will feature support from Falling In Reverse and Plush and is produced by Live Nation.

Tickets will be available starting with an Artist pre-sale beginning Tuesday, October 17 at 10 AM, local time. Additional pre-sales will run throughout the week ahead of the general on-sale starting Friday, October 20 at 10 AM, local time, here .

Disturbed’s recent 2023 summer tour was the group’s most successful yet and scored the band a career-high amphitheater attendance. The band’s 36-date tour sold 336,000 tickets, making 2023 the biggest year of the band’s touring career.

Disturbed’s eighth full-length album Divisive is out now via Reprise Records. Divisive pulls no punches as a precise, pummelling, and powerful hard rock opus. Over the last year, the quartet cut these ten tracks with producer Drew Fulk [Motionless In White, Lil Peep, Highly Suspect] in Nashville, TN. After Donegan shared initial ideas with the rest of the group, they locked in like never before with the groove as the backbone. Drummer Mike Wengren bolted down some of the strongest and boldest rhythms of their career punctuated by John Moyer’s punchy bass. Together, the musicians collectively conjured the focus and fire of their seminal early output augmented by airtight songcraft and a heightened level of musical chemistry that could only be forged by years of writing and touring together.

Divisive has already produced three #1 singles at Rock Radio with “Hey You”, “Bad Man”, and “Unstoppable”. Up next is Disturbed’s duet with Ann Wilson, “Don’t Tell Me”.

ROBERT PLANT And ALISON KRAUSS Announce 'Can't Let Go' 2024 U.S. Tour

Robert Plant and Alison Krauss have announced their return to North America. Reunited once more — and much sooner than the 12 years that passed between their previous two tours — the Rock And Roll Hall Of Famer and 27-time Grammy winner will hit the road this spring and summer for nearly 30 headline dates and counting.

Beginning June 2 with a centennial celebration for the legendary Cain's Ballroom, the "Can't Let Go" tour will see Plant , Krauss and their all-star band bring spellbinding vocal performances and uncanny arrangements to amphitheaters, pavilions, opera houses and other historic venues from coast to coast. With additional stops to still be revealed, dozens of cities will have the opportunity to experience the live show hailed as "a master class of a concert" ( Chicago Tribune ) and "a collaboration that should last for evermore" ( Variety ).

Tickets for Plant and Krauss 's "Can't Let Go" tour are on sale at 10 a.m. local time this Friday, February 16, following a series of pre-sales beginning at 10 a.m. local time tomorrow, February 14. Find more information at plantkrauss.com.

Dates will feature support from JD McPherson , who also plays lead guitar for Plant and Krauss , alongside an ace ensemble of drummer Jay Bellerose , bassist Dennis Crouch , multi-talented string player Stuart Duncan and Viktor Krauss on keys and guitar. Drawing from both of their monumentally acclaimed, T Bone Burnett -produced LPs — 2007's Grammy -sweeping "Raising Sand" and 2021's chart-topping "Raise The Roof" — Plant and Krauss will deliver a cosmic collision of early blues, country deep cuts, revolutionary folk-rock and lost soul music written by legends and unsung heroes like Merle Haggard , Allen Toussaint , THE EVERLY BROTHERS , Anne Briggs , Geeshie Wiley , Bert Jansch , Ola Belle Reed , Brenda Burns and more, as well as reimagined renditions of LED ZEPPELIN cuts like "The Battle Of Evermore" , "Rock & Roll" , "When The Levee Breaks" and other surprises in store.

Plant and Krauss want to give fans, not scalpers, the best chance to buy tickets at face value. To make this possible, if fans purchase tickets for a show through Ticketmaster and can't attend, they'll have the option to resell them to other fans at the original price paid using Ticketmaster 's Face Value Exchange. To help protect the Exchange, the artists have also chosen to make tickets for this tour mobile only and restricted from transfer. This applies to all shows ticketed by Ticketmaster . Please note, a valid bank account or debit card within the country of your event is required to sell on the Face Value Exchange.

by Matt Friedlander January 24, 2024, 3:16 pm

Todd Rundgren has lined an expansive 2024 U.S. trek that he’s dubbed the Me/We Tour. The 38-date road trip will kick off with an April 17 show in Minneapolis and is plotted out through a July 3 concert in Portland, Oregon.

Videos by American Songwriter

According to Todd-Rundgren.com, the Rock & Roll Hall of Famer will be accompanied by a full band that features his longtime bassist Kasim Sulton and drummer Prairie Prince. The group is rounded out by sax player Bobby Strickland, keyboardist Gil Assayas, and guitarist Bruce McDaniel.

Tickets for Rundgren’s Me/We Tour are on sale now via various outlets. You can get your tickets via StubHub , where orders are 100% guaranteed through StubHub’s FanProtect program. StubHub is a secondary market ticketing platform, and prices may be higher or lower than face value, depending on demand.

Prior to the U.S. trek, Rundgren will be heading Down Under in February for a trio of concerts in Australia. The shows are scheduled for February 22 in Melbourne, February 23 in Brisbane, and February 24 in Sydney. The eclectic Melbourne-based rock act Sex on Toast will open those gigs.

Rundgren’s most recent concerts were a series of 2023 shows opening for Daryl Hall of Hall & Oates. Rundgren’s most recent studio album, Space Force , was released in October 2022. The collaborative project featured the veteran singer/songwriter teaming up with such artists as Cheap Trick’s Rick Nielsen, Adrian Belew, Weezer’s Rivers Cuomo, Crowded House’s Neil Finn, The Roots, Sparks, Thomas Dolby, The Lemon Twigs, and Steve Vai.

See the full Me/We Tour routing below. Rundgren fans will not want to pass up on this opportunity to see the “Hello, It’s Me” rocker and his band playing a mix of hits, deep cuts, and select covers at his concerts this year.

Don’t wait – these tickets are likely to go quickly. Head to StubHub now to see if tickets are available to a show near you!
