TIMNA PARK OVERVIEW

The park is situated about 25 Kilometers north of Eilat and 8 Kilometers north of Ramon Airport. The park area is large, and therefore it is recommended to visit it by car or on an organized tour . The typical distance between one attraction to the next is about 5 kilometers.  Another option is to leave your car at the entrance and tour the park on mountain bikes (Which can be rented in the park).

There are two main reasons to visit the park:

The 1 st , which we will cover here in detail, is the fantastic selection of natural attractions that can be visited within a small area. All the essential attractions can be reached within a few minutes walk from the parking lots. However, it is possible (and highly recommended) to combine these attractions into an exciting desert hike . We provide a detailed description and Hiking Maps for such 3 hikes inside Timna Park:

  • Short hike to the stone arches and copper peer .
  • Mount Timna and Solomon Pillars hike.
  • Hike on the cliffs above Timna Park .

The 2 nd reason that brings many visitors is a variety of attractions for small kids, including pedal boats on the lake, colored sand bottle craft, making “King Solomon’s copper stamps”, and more. To get more information on this type of attractions, we recommend checking the park’s official website .

The main archeological findings in the Timna Valley are connected with ancient copper mining . Copper mines and mining peers at Timna Park can be seen throughout the park as well as remains of melting furnaces dating back to King Solomon’s period (10 th century BCE). Mining continued by the Israelites and Nabataeans until the 1st and 2nd centuries AD, and during the Roman period. ( Further reading on copper mining in Timna Park). The best way to see peers and mining caves is to go on the Arches Hike .

TIMNA PARK TOUR FROM EILAT

Timna arches and mines hike.

Stone arch in Timna Park

It is the most popular short hike in Timna park, and justly so. Although it’s just 3 Km long, it is an exciting hike that includes some rock climbing with the aid of metal ladders, plus fantastic views of the Timna Valley.

Distance: 3 Kilometers Climb: 100 Meters Level: Short but challenging (Includes climbing on rocks with ladders and metal handles) GPS File: Download Starting Point: Arches parking lot

Hike Description:

  • From the parking lot, walk about 300 meters back on the road and look for the beginning of a Green Trail.
  • Turn left and start following the Green markers down a short gorge.
  • At the end of the gorge, turn left and continue with the Green Trail.
  • The trail leads us to the “Plates Field”. The area is full of bright dents in the ground nicknamed “Plates”. It is not a natural phenomenon but the remains of ancient mining shafts. About 8,000 “Plates” were discovered in the Timna Valley, indicating the extensive mining activity in the area.

typical ladder in the arches hike in timna park

  • From here, we continue to the “Small Arch”. From the Arch, there is a good view of the Timna Valley, with Mount Timna dominating the scenery. (You can climb mount Timna on our second hike )
  • From the Small Arch, descend into the valley between the two arches. At the end of the descent, you reach a junction with a RedTrail.
  • Start climbing on the Red Trail toward the ‘Big Arch” with the aid of metal handles installed in the rocks . The spots call for an extended break. (But is usually very crowded).
  • Descend to the other side of the arc with the aid of another ladder.
  • After a short walk on the Red Trail, you will reach the junction with a Black Trail. Near the junction, you can spot a cave opening in the sandstone cliff. (The name of the cave is “The Egyptian miner’s cave”)

timna park night tour

  • Enter the cave (no headlamp needed) and immediately begin a challenging climb of 15 m with the aid of metal handles installed in the rocks. At the end of the climb exit through a narrow opening in the top of the cave towards a “terrace” in the sandstone rocks.
  • From here, continue to climb on a ladder and reach a balcony with a beautiful view of Timna Park.
  • Continue walking on the Black Trail until meeting The Red Trail again.
  • Follow the Red Trail inside a small gorge. Along the walls, you can identify ancient mining peers.
  • Continue walking until a junction with a Blue Trail.
  • Turn left and follow the Blue Trail back to the parking lot.
  • Along the way, you will pass another ancient mine. (Possible to go inside and visit). This mine is considered to be the oldest copper mine in the Timna Valley and some say in the entire world.

MOUNT TIMNA AND SOLOMON PILLARS HIKE

timna park night tour

Timna park is usually crowded, especially the famous landmarks and short hikes. However, If you make the extra effort of climbing to the summit of Timna Mountain, you are very likely to enjoy majestic views of the tranquility of the desert.

Distance: 12 Kilometers Climb: 400 Meters Level: Moderate Starting Point: Main entrance .

  • From the main park entrance and visitor center, follow the main road into the park for about 3 km. (If you are visiting with 2 cars, you can “save” these 3 kilometers and leave your second car here)
  • Look for a Black Trail marking on your left (2). Turn left and start following the Black Trail.
  • The path starts climbing towards a black Granite hill. It passes slightly below the summit, but make a small extra effort and climb to the summit (3).
  • You are rewarded with excellent views of the colorful Timna valley and the tablet-shaped Timna mountain you will reach later .
  • Continue with the Black Trail for 2.7 Km, until the trail descends to the valley and meets a junction of wide dirt roads (4).
  • Turn right on the unmarked dirt road and follow it for about 700 meters until you reach the Solomon Pillars (5). The spot might be overcrowded but still deserves a visit.

timna park night tour

  • On your way, notice on your right the ruins of an ancient Egyptian temple to the goddess of Hathor
  • After enjoying the natural wonder of the Solomon Pillars , retrace your steps back to the junction with Black Trail (4).
  • Continue straight on the same dirt road for a few minutes until you reach a junction with the INT ( Israel National Trail ).
  • Turn left and start following the INT markings climbing gradually towards the summit of Timna Mountain. After about an hour of a challenging hike, you will reach the flat table-shaped summit of Mount Timna (5).
  • Leave the marked trail and walk around the flat summit. This will give you amazing views each time in a different direction .
  • To the west are the steep cliffs of the Timna Valley western rim (You can walk on these cliffs on our Timna Bird’s Eye Hike ). To the south and east extends the flat Arava valley and behind it the Edom Mountains in Jordan. To the north lies the reddish Timna Valley, in which small hills are scattered in unique shapes. A perfect spot for an extended break.
  • From the summit, continue to follow the INT for another 3 Km until you are back at the park’s entrance (1).

TIMNA BIRD’S EYE HIKE

A festival of colors in the Timna valley

The hike does not start at Timna park; however, it is my favorite Timna Hike! An amazing trail above the backdrop of the Timna Valley. Walk on a secluded and amazing trail along the cliff, 500 meters above the valley, for an unforgettable vista.

Distance: 7 Kilometers Climb: 250 Meters Level: Easy-Moderate Starting Point: A dirt road in the Eilat mountain (30 minutes drive from Eilat). Google-Maps

Driving Directions: From the Google-Maps location, Turn to the Green marked dirt road and follow it for 5.9 Km, then turn right to the blue marked dirt road and follow it for an additional 3.7 Km until a Junction with a Green marked dirt road. (A detailed driving map is supplied with the download pack). The dirt roads are suitable for a regular passenger car.

  • Start at the Junction of Green and Blue dirt roads  (1).
  • Follow the Green Trail along the wide Matak Wadi.
  • At first, there is nothing special to see. But gradually, the wadi narrows and the banks of the gorge are filled with colored sand and rocks in shades of yellow, brown, and white . In between the rocks and on the ground are small white stones made of phosphorus. This material causes the stones to “twinkle” in the sun’s rays.
  • Walk 1.9 Km until a junction with an unmarked wadi joining it from the right (2).
  • Important Note: Just after the junction with this wadi, the Matak wadi you had been walking in makes a sharp 90° left turn. If you reached it, it means you missed the turn to the unmarked wadi!

Rokcs on the banks of the Matak gorge

  • Turn right and follow the beautiful unmarked wadi upstream. This small wadi is also filled with colorful sand and rocks. After 600 m, you reach the saddle at the end of the wadi and meet a Red Trail (3).
  • All of a sudden, you find yourself on the edge of the cliff with the Timna Valley 500 m below you. The view is truly overwhelming and calls for an extended break!
  • Turn right and follow the Red Trail for 3 Km.
  • You are walking on the edge of the cliff with the Timna Valley below always in sight. Most of the way is relatively flat, but near the end, the path climbs to the top of Mount Berech. The views from the top are even better (4).
  • Turn right on the Blue marked dirt roads and walk 1.4 km back to (1).

timna park night tour

About this place

Timna Park - also known as Timna Valley Park - is located in the far south of Israel, in the arid Arava desert. It is 30 kilometers north of Eilat, which sits on Israel’s Red Sea and overlooks the Gulf of Aqaba, in Jordan. Timna is rich in copper ore and historians believe that there have been mines in existence there since 5 or 6 BCE.  Set in around 15,000 acres, with steep cliffs and red-pink colored mountains surrounding it, Timna is a spectacular natural attraction, perfect for hikers, trekkers, and those who love ancient history, and with a few geological surprises thrown in for good measure.

The History of the Copper Mines

Geography and points of interest.

Timna is an excellent place for hiking with many unusual sites.  (Bear in mind, however, it is a large area, which makes it time-consuming to move, on foot, from one spot to another.  For this reason, many people prefer to take an organized tour). Shaped like a horseshoe, and ringed by steep cliffs, as you begin walking you will spy, on the western valley side, ‘the Arches.’  These are natural structures, formed as a result of erosion, and the walking trail that follows them also runs along some copper mine shafts. One of Timna’s top draws is its unique rock formations, some of which are quite extraordinary: ‘The Mushroom’ - This is a huge stone boulder, resting on a sandstone column, and - like the Arches - it was also formed as a result of erosion.  Made of red sandstone, and mushroom-shaped, its shape was made by centuries of wind, water erosion, and humidity.  All around it is copper ore smelting sites, dating back to 12-14 BCE.

Mine Shafts and a Lake

Whilst many tourists prefer just to peer down a mine shaft and use their imagination as to what happened there, hundreds of years ago, for the more adventurous It is possible to explore some of Timna’s mines alone. It is estimated that Timna is home to about 10,000 ‘saucers’ (mine shafts that fell into disrepair and ended up covered in sand and rocks). Climbing down the ladder of the ‘Open Mine’, you descend through a deep shaft and eventually into caverns through which you can walk.  Look out for the niches carved into the sides and the chisel marks that miners once made here. (Tip: be careful to wear study footwear and walk with a partner, for increased safety). Even more astonishing, Timna is home to a lake. Yes, a lake (albeit an artificial one) can be found here and, built for recreational purposes and surrounded by acacia trees and pergolas, it’s an ideal spot to enjoy the shade, rest, and enjoy the outstanding views of the desert, Pedal boats are available for hire and activities are also offered for children, including sand bottling (the sand here is a unique color).  Practical Information

Arriving at Timna by public transport is not an easy task, so most people choose to travel there either by car (which takes about 20 minutes from Eilat) or as part of an organized tour.  At the entrance gate, you can pick up a road map, which is included in your admission fee.  Inside, there is the helpful staff at a visitor’s information center who can advise you on which hiking trail best suits your needs. The trails are of varying difficulty, but however long you are hiking for, please be aware of the sun (which can be extremely dangerous at certain hours of the day).  It is always best to come prepared - wear cool clothes (preferably cotton, which can breathe easily), a wide-brimmed hat, sunscreen, and plenty of water.  Look out for ibexes and gazelles, as well as the dramatic red-purple-pink-orange hues of the cliffs all around you. As well as its 25 different trails, Timna has 4 different biking paths, all newly paved and guaranteed to please avid cyclists.  The park also offers a ‘Challenge’ area, close to the red sandstone cliffs, where you can try your hand at archery, rappelling, and wall climbing. There is a Bedouin restaurant, serving simple food and refreshments, and a campground, which rents large tents with mattresses inside if you do not have your own tent to pitch.  Inside the visitor pavilion is a souvenir store, a cafeteria, and a dedicated space where adults and children alike can enjoy a multimedia show of the area’s history. Entrance to Timna costs 45 NIS (36 NIS for children under the age of 15) and includes a bottle for filling sand and entrance to the multimedia show.  Opening hours are:

September- June: Sunday to Thursday and Saturday - 8 am to 4 pm. Friday - 8 am to 3 pm.

July- August: Sunday to Saturday - 8 am to 1 pm.

Getting to Timna by public transport is not an easy task. If you look at Moovit’s directions from Eilat to Timna Park, it suggests taking a bus to Elifaz junction and then walking for more than 3 km. Moreover, the park itself is vast. And most people use cars to get around inside the park. Thus it is recommended to arrive by car .

Note: Depending on season and availability, you can also rent bicycles (regular or electric).

If you do not have a car, then you have two options. The first one would be renting a car. Here is the link for rentalcars.com , where you can check the prices. Another option would be joining a jeep tour from Eilat.

In Events And Festivals By Season , I have presented data about the weather in Israel. Here is the data that I collected for that post:

Average rainfall and temperature in Israel

As you can see from the table above, the Eilat region is almost rainless and boiling during the summer. You can even see that during the summer month, they close early. Thus, winter is the ideal time for a visit. Check out Visiting Eilat During The Winter for additional regional attractions.

Park Timna, located some 25 km north of Eilat, combines beautiful scenery with special antiquities and history and various activities the whole family will enjoy. The horseshoe-shaped valley covers some 60,000 dunams and is surrounded by cliffs. In the center is Mount Timna, 453 m above sea level. Timna Valley is a geological window revealing various minerals, including copper, iron, and manganese. Timna is the site of the world’s first copper mine. Thousands of ancient mining shafts can be seen throughout the park and remains of smelting furnaces dating back to ancient imperial Egypt. Copper was the first metal used to create work and household tools, weapons, costly ornaments, and cultic objects. You will thrill at the stories of Hathor, the goddess of copper, and the deified Pharaoh Ramses. Moreover, you will find remnants of Egyptian mythology and fascinating history. You will also see exciting finds at the Temple of Hathor near the spectacular Solomon’s Pillars, at the Mushroom, the impressive Arches, and of course, the ancient rock-drawings depicting hunters of ostriches and ibexes, Egyptian battle chariots, and other images.

Note: unless stated otherwise, all quotes were taken from the official site .

You can camp at Timna Park, and you can do this by choosing one of four options: private tent, rent a two-room tent, rent a room, or rent a caravan.

Whether you choose to camp out in your tent, rent a large two-room tent at our Villa Camp, rent one of our air-conditioned, well-equipped rooms suitable for couples and families, or rent a caravan, you will enjoy the park`s unique and tranquil vistas of the arid desert. The main sleeping area in Timna Park is located next to the enchanting lake and includes Bathrooms and showers With hot water at all times, Electricity infrastructure, low outdoor lighting, garbage containers (sorting), shade arbor, faucet, benches, parking, and perimeter lighting. Accommodation prices for the independent traveler (who brings a private tent), is 104 NIS per night (Entrance fee to the park is included in the price). For more information and lodging reservations, please email us at [email protected]

Cycling and Bike Rental

Bicycle lovers will find Timna Park a hidden paradise. The Jewish National Fund (JNF) has set up 14 kilometers of spectacular bike paths in the park, whose main theme is the “Single Timna” track, which is designed to fit a single cyclist – a group called cyclists will be required to ride one after another instead of parallel. Varied, with technical challenges, angles, ups, and turns, while changing the height of many who bring the rider to spectacular observation points. The paths are divided into several levels, from comfortable family carriages to extreme tracks. Riders can come with their bikes or rent bikes instead. More than 100 pairs of advanced mountain bikes are waiting for cyclists, in different sizes, adapted to adults, children, and families. The rental is from the age of 8 and up and takes place at the entrance to the park or the shop counter in the lake complex. The bicycle rental price is 60 NIS for a half-day rental. Electric bicycle rental prices: 85 NIS FOR 4 hours rental.

Note: Contact them regarding availability if you plan to rent a bike, especially on Saturdays or holidays. Also, there is no bicycle rental during the hot summer days.

There are about 25 hiking tracks at Timna. Most of them are short (up to one hour) and suitable for families.

Once I overheard one of the guides who said you would need two weeks to complete all tracks. And if you want a consultation, you can ask the guides at the visitor center for advice .

If it is your first visit to Timna, I would suggest driving to a parking lot near each point of interest (there are nine parking lots, including the visitor center) and then making a short hike. The tracks are marked well, and there are explanation signs. Hence you will not need any additional map besides the one shown above (which you will receive at the entrance). This way, you can visit most points of interest at Timna park during a half-day visit.

If it is not your first visit, or you prefer longer tracks, Timna parks recommend several tracks in the official brochure. You can find more info about tracks here and here .

Over the years, we did only several sections of loop tracks. And I want to warn you that some footpaths include rather strenuous hiking with ladders and are unsuitable for kids. Therefore I would suggest asking for advice at the visitor center. There is an information office where you can tell the required hike’s length and level, and they will give you some suggestions.

The Arches Track, Timna Park

Note: the photos in this post are from several different visits. Thus you will see the difference in the weather.

Joining a tour is an alternative to a self-visit. Currently, besides regular guided tours, there are sunset and lantern tours. Here is, for example, information about the lantern tour:

Come and discover the desert at night, on a spectacular guided tour of the Park’s sites. We will drive in a convoy, led by the guide, visit one of the Park’s sites and of course the majestic Solomon’s Pillars, illuminated with dramatic lighting to enhance them in all their glory. The tours explain of the ancient world that once existed in the Park and allows visitors to enjoy a unique desert experience and enjoy the beautiful star filled skies! The tour ends at Timna Lake, which is also illuminated with gentle lighting, here visitors can fill bottles with colored sand as a souvenir of their visit, and enjoy a cup of herbal tea. The price of the tour is 69 NIS per adult and 59 NIS per child (3-14) Book online to receive a discount – 66 NIS per adult / 56 NIS per child. Book any tour of Timna Park and receive free admission to Yotvata Park The duration of the tour is approximately two and a half hours The tour of the Park is in your private car. All of the guided tours are conducted in Hebrew. In order to arrange a private tour in another language, please email us at: [email protected]

Visitor Center

When entering Timna Park, there is a small building. Inside this building, there is the ticket box, cafeteria, restrooms, and several exhibits. Near that building, another structure shows a short multimedia display about this site.

This display demonstrates how copper was mined:

Timna Park Visitor Center

Multimedia Display – Following The Copper

The experience of visiting Timna Park begins with the visitor center. The best technological advancements were used to illustrate the historical and cultural background of the people who came to Timna thousands of years ago to carve copper, the first metal used by man. The 13-minute multimedia exhibit focuses on illustrating the copper production process in Timna and takes the viewer back in time with magical sounds, mirrors, and colors to a fascinating encounter with Egyptian gods from ancient Egypt and the Pharaohs. The show is screened in Hebrew and English, and subtitles in English / Hebrew / Arabic / Spanish / German / Russian accompany each screening.

Spiral Hill

When driving from the park’s entrance, the first thing that you will see will be Spiral Hill (on the right).

This hill is named after the spiral that climbs up and around the rock, like a spiral staircase. It is just one example of the various shapes and sculptures created by the natural forces of erosion.

Spiral Hill, Timna Park

Since I mentioned driving, I want to explain how we usually visit Timna Park. By this point, you saw that you could hike, cycle, drive or do any combination of the three. We typically move between parking lots and do short hikes to and around each point of interest. This way of visiting allows seeing most of the attractions the park offers within half a day. And each time, we put more emphasis on another area.

The color of the rocks gives away the high concentration of iron.

A day in the life of an archaeologist

I have mentioned different tours above. But there are other events as well. During one of our visits to Eilat on Hanukkah vacation, I saw that “A day in the life of an archaeologist” was taking place. So we drove to Timna and participated in this activity.

During this Hanukkah special event, visitors were allowed to feel how it is to be an archaeologist.

The Mushroom, Timna Park, near Eilat, Israel

This activity took place near the Mushroom. As you can see in the diagram in the following photo, there was an ancient copper smelting camp.

Digging. Well, actually, in this closed area, archaeologists were working.

And here we are (my wife, daughter, and an archaeologist):

At Timna Park, near Eilat, Israel

Archeological Excavations

The area that archaeologists were interested in was divided into two-meter squares. In each room, there were tools and a plastic bag. You collected everything from your square, filtered it, and put the significant finding into the plastic bag. And, of course, several archaeologists were on-site helping people and answering questions.

The primary purpose of this research was to find slag. Slag is a stony waste matter separated from metals during the smelting or refining of ore. And by using the amount of residue in an area, you can estimate the quantity of copper that was prepared. Moreover, if a specific area has more slugs, it is most likely there was a furnace in that area. And further excavations will be performed.

Since several archeologists were present on-site at all times, you could join and leave the digging whenever you wanted.

A Day In The Life Of An Archaeologist was a pleasant activity, and we all enjoyed it. So keep in mind that there may be different activities (especially on holidays), and if your timetable is flexible, check for activities on all possible dates in advance.

The Mushroom

After participating for an hour and a half at “A day in the life of an archaeologist,” we continued to the Mushroom. The Mushroom is a unique natural red sandstone rock sculpture. Such a shape results from faster erosion of the lower part of the rock.

The Mushroom at Timna Park, near Eilat, Israel

This unique natural sculpture resulted from the erosion of the red sandstone. The more rapid erosion of the bottom created the mushroom-like shape of half of the rock. The nearby visitor center portrays the story of the copper-smelting camp located in the valley.

And here is The Mushroom on a rainy day:

The Mushroom at Timna park

The Arches and The Ancient Mines

These sandstone arches are a unique expression of nature’s creativity. The remains of the world’s oldest copper mines are found nearby. Copper was the first metal human beings mined, produced and used. We invite you to enter these ancient mines and discover their secrets for yourselves.

During our last visit, we skipped The Arches And The Ancient Mines. And as I found out while preparing this post, I do not have decent photos from there. Thus I will only say that this point of interest is similar to others, and if time allows, do not skip it.

The Chariots

Two rock engravings from the 14th – 12th centuries BCE that depict human activity and wildlife in ancient ears. On the wall inside a small ravine are drawings of Egyptian chariots alongside a hunting scene. In the visitor center, you can observe various rock engravings that were found in and around Timna.

In this area, two works of rock art were found. “The Chariots” and the “Ibexes.” Both are dated by the researcher Rothenberg to the period between the 14th and the 12th centuries BCE. During this era, Egyptian expeditions increased activity in the valley. However, the artists who painted “The Chariots” and the “Ibexes” are assumed to be locals, not Egyptians.

The Chariots

Quite hard to see under the blazing sun, so let’s go to the second rock artwork.

Timna Park

Solomon’s Pillars and Hathor Temple

Our last stop at that visit to Timna was Solomon’s Pillars.

In reality, there is no connection to Solomon. The name originated from a theory that the copper mines in this area were part of King Solomon’s activity.

These sandstone pillars are a natural part of the cliff wall. They are a typical landscape formation that developed as a result of erosion along cracks in the hard red sandstone. They are named after King Solomon, due to a mistaken early theory that copper mining and production were part of Solomon’s activities in this area. A short walk leads to a temple dedicated to the Egyptian goddess Hathor and an ancient engraving that depicts Ramses III making an offering to Hathor.

Here is a photo of Solomon’s Pillars with people nearby so that you can see the scale.

Solomon’s Pillars at Timna

Next to Solomon’s Pillars, a new route leads through Egyptian rock engravings to Hathor’s Temple. If you do not want to climb all those stairs, you can go along the pillars (to your left when facing the pillars), and after several minutes you will reach Hathor Temple.

Hathor is an ancient Egyptian goddess who personified the principles of joy, feminine love, and motherhood. She was one of the most important and popular deities throughout the history of ancient Egypt. Royalty and ordinary people alike worshiped Hathor. She was also believed to be the patron goddess of miners.

Hathor Temple at Timna Park, near Eilat, Israel

The Hathor Temple is the leading ritual site in Timna Valley. And the archeological findings here helped to date the copper industry.

Timna Park

Our last stop is usually Timna Lake.

Timna Lake is majestically situated at the center of Timna Park. The perfect place to relax under an acacia tree and enjoy the dramatic surrounding landscapes during the day and evening. Enjoy shaded seating areas while your children enjoy playing in the park’s playground, rent a paddleboat or fill miniature bottles of colorful sand to take home as a souvenir of your visit. King Solomon’s Khan restaurant is located on the banks of the lake and offers a range of thirst-quenching beverages and tasty traditional dessert cuisine. Pop into our souvenir \ convenience store, selling a variety of souvenirs and daily use products.

You can find a bicycle rental, a camping site, a restaurant, a souvenir shop, and The Tabernacle near the lake.

The Tabernacle

You can visit one of Israel’s most exclusive sites near the lake, the Tabernacle Tent.

An accurate and authentic life-size replica of the biblical tabernacle, used by the Israelites in the years they wandered through the desert, according to how it is described in the Bible. The visit is by appointment and entails a fee.

We have not visited The Tabernacle yet. And the main reason is that, as far as I remember, the paddleboats, the restaurant, and The Tabernacle are all closed on Saturdays. And we usually stop at Timna Park on the way home on Saturday (the last day of the weekend).

Related Attractions

The guide to Eilat suggests other nearby attractions, like the Red Canyon , Underwater Observatory Marine Park , and Dolphin Reef . There is also Hai-Bar Yotvata Nature Reserve , and further to the north, you can find Mitzpe Ramon and Makhtesh Ramon .

If you have never been to Timna Park, you are in for a treat. The scenery and how the rocks look (their forms and colors) look like another planet.

Moreover, there are interesting archeological finds, and there is a variety of hiking and cycling trails. And to top all of it, there are tours and events. So what are you waiting for?

Have you ever been to Timna Park? Tell us about your experience in the comments below.

That’s all for today, and I’ll see you in future travels!

About Timna Park

Covering 15,000 acres in a horseshoe-shaped valley, Timna Park is home to some of the world’s earliest copper mines that were once connected to Ancient Egypt. Archaeological findings in this area include thousands of mineshafts that were dug to extract the copper from deep inside the stone as well as remains of smelting furnaces.

Amazing Stone Formations

The desert landscape is dominated by awe-inspiring cliffs and unusual rock formations in shades of burnt red, pink and tan. Some of these bizarre natural rock formations take the shape of giant mushrooms, elegant pillars and delicate arches. The impressive Solomon’s Pillars are a natural part of the cliff wall. A short walk leads to a temple dedicated to the goddess of Hathor and an ancient engraving that depicts Ramses III making an offering to Hathor.

Wilderness Tabernacle

Timna Park is a perfect backdrop for the life-size replica of the biblical tabernacle that God instructed Moses to build. It is the only life size model of its kind in Israel. It contains every piece of furniture the original tabernacle had.

Other Interests

It is an excellent place for hiking, trekking, rappelling and wall climbing. It has an artificial lake built for recreational purposes with shaded seating areas, a playground and plenty of attractions for kids. It is also home to amazing wildlife, plants and trees. During the summer, the Park offers sunset and night tours.

Interesting Facts

timna park night tour

  • Copper was the first metal used by an ancient man to create work and household tools, weapons, religious artifacts and jewellery.
  • By the park’s entrance is the Spiral Hill, a rock that seems to ‘climb’ up and around the rock into the sky, like a spiral staircase.
  • Timna Park is apparently the only place in the world where a semiprecious “Eilat stone” (also known as King Solomon’s Stone) can be found. It is becoming more and more difficult to find due to the mine flooding and the designation as a national park and archaeological site.

timna park night tour

A 20-min ride away from Eilat lies Timna Park, one of the most popular parks in Israel and a must-see desert attraction for visitors coming to Israel's vacation capital. It offers an intriguing combination of wild nature, fascinating history, and activities for the whole family.

A visit to Timna Park allows vacationers in Eilat to connect with the desert and discover the power of nature that sculpted the gorgeous rock formations scattered throughout the park. Timna Park also affords visitors a rare glimpse into life in antiquity and artefacts from the ancient Egyptian era. A visit to the park is both pleasurable and educational and is suited to all ages.

The key sites at Timna Park are:

Boreg Hill is the first attraction in the park. The attraction bears this name because of the rock stairs climbing the hill on the diagonal. They are reminiscent of the threads of a bolt, making the hill look like a turning screw ("boreg" is Hebrew for "screw"). Boreg Hill is the park's first example of "natural sculpting" whereby nature sculpts the earth to create sights of rare beauty. It's possible to park by the side of the road and walk to the hill, located a short distance from the road.

The Chariot Paintings , which are actually rock engravings from the 14th to the 12th century BCE, are a great reason to stop. Among the engraved scenes are hunts, fighters, and animals, evidence that Timna Valley area was filled with activity in ancient times.

Solomon's Pillars and the Temple of the Goddess Hathor are some of the other famous park attractions. The pillars, which draw visitors from Israel and the world, are considered one of the park's major wonders of nature. The pillars, rising to the lofty height of 40 m, were created naturally and are named for the biblical King Solomon. It's possible to park near the site and climb the stairs to the right, an easy climb that last about 15 min. The sharp-eyed will notice the famous engraving of the Egyptian Goddess Hathor, whose ancient temple was located a short walk from the pillars.

The Arches and the most ancient mines in the world form the fascinating stop that begins at the shaded Visitors' Center where it's possible to learn about the site before entering. At the site are natural sandstone arches a short walk away. It's also possible to ascend a ladder to one of the arches. Afterwards, visitors can enter the underground mine and crawl inside it.

The Mushroom is one of the symbols most often associated with Timna Park. The Mushroom is a natural rock formation of red sandstone that takes its name from its shape. Mushroom Valley was once the site of an Egyptian camp producing copper. We recommend getting out of the car, learning about copper production at the open, shaded Visitors' Center and, of course, taking a selfie with the Mushroom.

Timna Lake is the last and central stop at the park. The blue lake surrounded by desert hills is one of Israel's most beautiful sights. It is forbidden to swim in the lake, but there are paddle-boats available to couples and families. At the lake, visitors can enjoy several activities, such as filling bottles with layers of different colored sand and having a cup of desert-herb tea. Adjacent to the park, visitors will find a restaurant, bathrooms, and a unique gift shop.

Getting to Timna Park

Take Rte. 90 north from Eilat for about 19 min until coming to the sign indicating the left turn to the park, located about a 2-min drive from Rte. 90.

Copper was the first metal used to create utensil and household tools, ornaments, cult objects, and even weapons. That means that the importance of Timna in the ancient world was enormous.

Some Multimedia displays tell the amazing history of the site, and visitors are engaged by dream-like stories of Egyptian goddesses and pharaohs.

Nature at Timna Park

Solomon’s Pillars are tall sandstone columns, so perfectly formed that you might not believe that they are the work of nature. But they, as with the rest of the amazing geology and landscape of Timna Park, are the work of nature alone, the result of strips of volcanic magma frozen into the cliffs. This scenery truly is the thing dreams are made of.

Visiting Timna Park

As mentioned above, Timna Park is around 25 km north of Eilat, a 15-minute drive through the Arava Valley. Due to the size of the park, getting around inside by foot can take a long time, so the site is best reached by an organized tour, by car or the Timna Safari Shuttle.

The shuttle is available daily from Eilat during the winter season, meaning October to April.

Opening hours of the park:

Sunday to Thursdays and Saturday: 08:00-16:00

Friday: 08:00-15:00

Eve of Holidays during July and August: 08:00-13:00

Timna Park: the ULTIMATE desert destination in Israel!

  • 225 Facebook
  • 847 Pinterest

If you’re coming to Israel looking for stunning desert scenery, a visit to Timna Park is an essential addition to your itinerary!

Many renowned geologists regard Timna Park as one of the Middle East’s top attractions for sheer geological interest, and its gorgeous multicolored sand, combined with its towering sandstone pillars are a sight sure to amaze even the most jaded of tourists.

Getting to Timna Park is a simple matter of taking a short drive north from the city of Eilat . The drive is about 17 miles from Eilat and should take you about half an hour. Alternatively, when heading down to Eilat (don’t miss our guide to Eilat ), allocate some time to stopover at this amazing desert site…don’t just drive by!

When driving down to Eilat from the center of the country, we’d also HIGHLY recommend stopping by at the Mizpeh Ramon Crater – read more HERE !

When to visit Timna Park

The best time to visit Timna Park is probably somewhere between the months of November and April. During this period, the weather is pleasantly cool and dry and you’ll be able to participate in all of the fantastic outdoor activities that Timna Park is famous for. October (during the Jewish holiday of Sukkot) is also a good time to come for the legendary Timna Park Balloon Festival!

Alternatively, if you’re not a fan of outdoor sports, you may want to consider visiting in the height of summer instead. Of course, summer tends to be swelteringly hot, so if you’re visiting during this period, don’t forget to pack cool, dry clothes and drink lots and lots of water.

What to see at Timna Park

One of the must-see attractions in Timna Park is the group of sandstone columns known as Solomon’s Pillars . Pictures cannot do justice to the sheer, awe-inspiring size of these monoliths. What’s more, these pillars have been molded by the erosion of wind and water into various extremely interesting shapes which add a great deal of visual interest to the scene. One of the most popular pillars is the one known as “The Mushroom”. Don’t forget to pose for pictures with these pillars!

Another Timna Park experience you simply cannot miss is that of exploring the copper mines beneath the park’s surface. Scientists and historians agree that the Timna copper mines are very likely to have been the first mines ever built on earth. The mines are at least six thousand years old and were mined both by ancient Egyptians, by order of their pharaoh, and the Israelites under the rule of King Solomon. Best of all, visitors to Timna Park have the rare opportunity to explore these ancient mines!

If you decide to take the plunge, the moment you step into the cavernous mine shafts you cannot help but imagine the miners of old hacking away at the stone with their hammer and chisel. It really is a once-in-a-lifetime experience.

To fully appreciate the rich history of the area, make sure you read up on King Solomon as well as Rameses III, the latter of whom is likely to have overseen the mines’ construction.

Note there are also restaurants, overnight camping facilities, and sunset and night tours available.

So, if you’re planning on visiting Eilat and want the ultimate desert spot to stopover in along the way, don’t forget to plan for Timna Park. Its geographical complexity, beautiful scenery and rich history will require a full day to take in, so make sure you allocate sufficient time to explore this fascinating destination.

Opening hours

Timna Park is open from 08:00 to 16:00 hours in the winter (September through June, but it will close a little earlier on holidays and at the weekend) and 08:00 to 13:00 hours in the summer (July – August, but is open in the evenings on Tuesdays for special sunset tours). Ticket prices start at 34 shekels for seniors.

For further information, see the official site , or call 08-6316756 for more details.

About the Hai Bar nature reserve (Israel Nature and Parks Authority web site) Hai-Bar Yotvata nature reserve, located in the southern Arava Valley north of Eilat. The Hai Bar was established to foster the breeding of animals mentioned in the Bible and other endangered desert animals. The Hai Bar reserve encompasses a variety of arid-land habitats including acacia groves, salt-flats and sand.

Hai-Bar Yotvata is divided into three main sections: a 12-square-kilometer open area where herds of desert herbivores live in conditions similar to the wild; a predator center with enclosures containing large predators, reptiles and small desert animals; and a ‘dark room’ to view nocturnal animals when they are active.

The main animals in the Hai Bar reserve are the wild Asiatic ass (individuals from this breeding nucleus have been released in the Negev and seem to be acclimating well), the African wild ass --the progenitor of the domesticated donkey; Arabian oryx (whose image provided the logo for Hai-Bar Yotvata and whose straight, parallel horns some say are the origin of the unicorn legend); Sahara oryx (raised at Hai-Bar Yotvata as part of an international effort to save this species from extinction); addax and ostriches. The predators of the Hai Bar in their special enclosures include the wolf, Ruppell’s fox, Blanford’s fox, spotted leopard, caracal, wild cat and striped hyena. Reptiles and raptors are also on display. Among the denizens of the ‘dark room’ are the lesser Egyptian gerbil, Wagner’s gerbil, Sundevall’s jird and garden dormouse, fruit bat, Scops owl and barn owl.
