A journey to Tanzania is a voyage through a land where nature's grandeur unfolds in myriad spectacles. From the towering summit of Mount Kilimanjaro to the vast golden plains of the Serengeti, the landscapes inspire awe and wonder. Beneath the shade of baobab trees, wildlife dramas play out, while the azure waters of Zanzibar beckon with an allure of tropical paradise. Enriching this natural tapestry are the warm Tanzanian people, whose rich cultural heritage and age-old traditions provide a soulful depth to any traveler's experience. At Luxury Holidays Nepal, we craft journeys that delve beyond the surface, ensuring that each moment in Tanzania is one of discovery, luxury, and unforgettable memories.

The Pinnacle: Mount Kilimanjaro

Mount Kilimanjaro, affectionately referred to as "Kili", isn't just Africa's highest peak—it's a symbol of the intriguing challenge and sheer majesty that Tanzania offers to the world. Rising solitarily from the Tanzanian plains, this dormant volcano beckons adventurers, romantics, and dreamers alike.

A Geological Marvel: Mount Kilimanjaro is unique. It's not part of a mountain range but stands alone, its three volcanic cones, Kibo, Mawenzi, and Shira, pushing the skyline to an impressive 5,895 meters (19,341 feet). Although Kili is a dormant volcano, it's not extinct. The last major eruption was about 360,000 years ago, with smaller eruptions having taken place 150,000 and 200 years ago.

Roof of Africa: Standing atop Kilimanjaro provides a vantage point like no other. The mountain's glaciers and the cloud cover below offer a surreal landscape, making climbers feel as though they're on top of the world. This feeling, coupled with the achievement of reaching Africa's highest point, creates a mix of euphoria and profound reflection for many trekkers.

Trekking Routes: Kilimanjaro is accessible to trekkers without mountaineering equipment or experience, making it one of the most approachable high peaks globally. However, the altitude and potential for rapid altitude sickness should never be underestimated. There are several routes to the summit:

  • Marangu Route : Often considered the "easiest", it offers hut accommodations.
  • Machame Route : Popular and scenic, but also challenging.
  • Lemosho and Shira Routes : These begin from the western side and offer longer acclimatization periods.
  • Rongai Route : Approaching from the north, this is a quieter route.
  • Umbwe Route : The most challenging due to its steep ascent.

Biodiversity: Kilimanjaro isn't just about the climb. It's a journey through distinct ecological zones, from rainforest to moorland, alpine desert to the arctic summit. Each zone is home to unique flora and fauna. Blue monkeys, bush babies, and vibrant bird species add life to the lush rainforests, while the upper reaches are characterized by hardy plant species like giant groundsels and lobelias.

Cultural Significance: The Chagga people have lived on Kilimanjaro's slopes for centuries. The mountain has deep spiritual significance for them and is interwoven with their history and folklore. Visiting climbers will find the warmth and stories of the Chagga as enriching as the climb itself.

Luxury Holidays Nepal Experience: At Luxury Holidays Nepal, we believe that Kilimanjaro is more than a trek—it's a journey of the soul. Our curated experiences ensure you don't just climb a mountain, but truly engage with its essence. From expert guides and porters to luxury camp setups, we ensure your Kilimanjaro experience is safe, memorable, and deeply fulfilling.

In the grand tapestry of Tanzania's offerings, Mount Kilimanjaro stands tall, both literally and metaphorically. Its majesty, challenge, and the sheer wonder it evokes make it a pinnacle in every sense of the word.

The Plains: Serengeti National Park

When one thinks of African safaris, the image that most often comes to mind is that of the vast, golden grasslands of the Serengeti, dotted with acacia trees and teeming with wildlife. The Serengeti National Park, a UNESCO World Heritage site, is the epitome of wild Africa and one of the continent's most celebrated ecosystems.

A Tapestry of Life: Covering an area of approximately 14,750 square kilometers, the Serengeti is home to a staggering array of animals. From the famed 'Big Five' – lion, leopard, rhinoceros, elephant, and Cape buffalo – to cheetahs, hyenas, giraffes, impalas, and countless bird species, the park offers unparalleled wildlife viewing opportunities.

The Great Migration: One of nature's most spectacular events, the Great Migration, unfolds in the Serengeti. Over two million wildebeest, zebras, and gazelles move in a cyclical pattern in search of fresh pastures and water. This epic journey, with its river crossings, predator-prey interactions, and calving season, offers riveting drama and is a bucket-list experience for many wildlife enthusiasts.

Landscapes Beyond the Plains: While the endless plains dominate the park's landscape, the Serengeti is also made up of riverine forests, swamps, kopjes (rock formations), and woodlands. Each of these habitats supports specific communities of plants and animals, adding to the park's rich biodiversity.

Cultural Interactions: Adjacent to the Serengeti are the proud Maasai communities. With their vibrant attire, age-old traditions, and harmonious coexistence with the wild, the Maasai offer a cultural dimension to any Serengeti visit. Engaging with them provides insights into their pastoral lifestyle and deep connection with the land.

Conservation Efforts: Serengeti's significance isn't just ecological; it's also a testament to conservation efforts. Anti-poaching units, community outreach programs, and sustainable tourism practices are continually employed to ensure that this wild paradise remains untouched for generations to come.

Luxury Holidays Nepal Experience: In the heart of the Serengeti, Luxury Holidays Nepal crafts an experience that goes beyond the ordinary. From luxury tented camps that echo the grandeur of a bygone era to expert guides who unravel the intricacies of the wild, we ensure that your Serengeti sojourn is immersive and memorable. Customized game drives, bush breakfasts, and balloon safaris are just some of the offerings that elevate your African adventure.

The Serengeti isn't just a national park; it's a feeling, a call of the wild that resonates deep within. Its expansive plains and the pulse of life they hold are a testament to nature's grandeur. With Luxury Holidays Nepal, discover the Serengeti in its full splendor, creating memories that last a lifetime.

Island Magic: Zanzibar

Tanzania's treasures are not confined to its mainland. Off its eastern coast lies Zanzibar, an archipelago that pulses with history, culture, and natural wonders. Often dubbed the "Spice Island" due to its age-old spice trade, Zanzibar is a mosaic of influences, from African to Arab, Portuguese to Persian. With Luxury Holidays Nepal, dive into the magic that is Zanzibar.

Azure and Beyond: Zanzibar's beaches are the stuff of legends. Powdery white sands kiss the turquoise waters of the Indian Ocean, creating serene stretches perfect for relaxation. Dive beneath the waves, and you'll discover vibrant coral reefs teeming with marine life. Whether you're snorkeling, diving, or sailing on a traditional dhow, the waters of Zanzibar offer myriad adventures.

Stone Town: A Historical Tapestry: At the heart of Zanzibar is Stone Town, a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Walking its narrow alleys is like stepping back in time. Majestic palaces, ancient forts, and intricately carved wooden doors tell tales of sultans, traders, and explorers. The town's architecture is a blend of Swahili, Arab, Persian, Indian, and European elements, reflecting its storied past.

The Spice Legacy: Zanzibar's spice trade dates back centuries, and even today, its spice plantations are a sensory delight. Wander amidst clove, nutmeg, vanilla, and cinnamon trees. Participate in a spice tour, where you can learn about the cultivation and uses of these aromatic treasures, followed by a meal flavored with these very spices.

Cultural Melting Pot: Zanzibar's cultural richness is evident in its festivals, music, dance, and art. The island's Taarab music, a blend of local tunes with Indian and Arabic influences, fills the air, creating a unique soundscape. Festivals like the Zanzibar International Film Festival and the Sauti za Busara Music Festival celebrate the island's artistic spirit.

Wild Wonders: Beyond its cultural and historical sites, Zanzibar is also home to the Jozani Chwaka Bay National Park, the only national park in Zanzibar. Here, visitors can encounter the rare Red Colobus Monkeys and a variety of other flora and fauna.

Luxury Holidays Nepal Experience: With Luxury Holidays Nepal, your Zanzibar journey is curated for excellence. From luxury beachfront resorts to immersive cultural tours, we ensure that your island experience is both authentic and lavish. Enjoy sundowners on a private dhow cruise, indulge in spa treatments infused with Zanzibari spices, or simply lounge by the pristine beaches. Every moment in Zanzibar with us is tailored to evoke wonder and indulgence.

In the vast canvas of Tanzanian wonders, Zanzibar shines distinctly, offering travelers a harmonious blend of history, culture, and natural beauty. With its magic, it beckons, promising memories that linger long after the journey ends.

The Cradle of Mankind: Ngorongoro Crater

Nestled in the heart of Tanzania lies a geological marvel and a testament to life's ancient beginnings: the Ngorongoro Crater. Often referred to as the "Eighth Wonder of the World," this vast caldera is not only a spectacle of natural beauty but also an unparalleled sanctuary for wildlife. With Luxury Holidays Nepal, explore the depths and wonders of Ngorongoro, a place where the past and present of our planet coalesce.

A Geological Gem: The Ngorongoro Crater, resulting from a colossal volcanic explosion some two to three million years ago, spans approximately 260 square kilometers. Its sheer walls rise 400 to 610 meters, encircling a unique ecosystem that has remained largely unchanged for millennia.

Wildlife Haven: Perhaps the most dense game-viewing area in Africa, the crater floor is a mosaic of habitats, from forests to lakes, that support a staggering array of wildlife. Lions, elephants, rhinos, buffaloes, and leopards (making up the 'Big Five') coexist alongside hippos, flamingos, antelopes, and many others. The crater's natural borders have allowed for a unique evolutionary microcosm, giving visitors an unmatched safari experience.

Footprints of Early Man: Close to Ngorongoro, in the Olduvai Gorge, lies a record of humanity's early stages. Dubbed the "Cradle of Mankind," this site has yielded fossils and tools providing evidence of early hominins, marking significant milestones in our evolutionary journey. A visit here is not just a physical journey, but a contemplative one into our shared past.

Maasai Coexistence: The Ngorongoro Conservation Area is unique in that it integrates the protection of wildlife with the needs of the local Maasai people. These proud pastoralists graze their cattle alongside wild animals, showcasing a harmonious coexistence and a testament to man's potential symbiotic relationship with nature.

Luxury Holidays Nepal Experience: Exploring Ngorongoro with Luxury Holidays Nepal is a dive into nature's grand theatre. Our luxury lodges on the crater rim offer stunning vistas and easy access to the crater floor for safari drives. Expert guides bring the region's history and biodiversity to life, ensuring every moment is rich in discovery. Whether you're witnessing a lion hunt at dawn or exploring the ancient layers of Olduvai Gorge, we ensure your experience is both profound and luxurious.

In Tanzania's vast array of wonders, Ngorongoro stands as a poignant reminder of life's ancient rhythms and the enduring magic of the wild. Journey with us to this cradle, where every moment resonates with the deep pulse of the earth.

Cultural Immersion: Maasai Villages

To truly understand the heart of Tanzania, one must venture beyond its wildlife-rich national parks and pristine beaches to the vibrant communities that have thrived on this land for millennia. Among them, the Maasai people stand out as a beacon of tradition, resilience, and cultural pride. With Luxury Holidays Nepal, immerse yourself in the colors, sounds, and spirit of the Maasai villages for a genuine and transformative Tanzanian experience.

Living Legends: The Maasai, semi-nomadic pastoralists, have roamed the plains of East Africa for centuries. With their tall, slender build and unmistakable bright red shukas (traditional cloths), they are instantly recognizable. Their life revolves around their cattle, which are both a source of sustenance and a symbol of wealth.

Engage in Rituals and Dance: The Maasai are known for their enchanting dance and song rituals, most famously the 'Adumu' or 'jumping dance'. Warriors gather in a circle, taking turns to jump high into the air, showcasing their prowess and strength. Visitors are often invited to join, making it an interactive and joyous experience.

Craftsmanship and Adornments: Maasai beadwork is intricate and colorful, with each design symbolizing different aspects of their culture and beliefs. These adornments are not just decorative but carry deep meanings about one's age, social status, and marital status. Engaging with local artisans offers insights into their craft and even opportunities to purchase these beautiful handmade items.

Traditional Dwellings: A visit to a Maasai village or 'enkang' is incomplete without exploring their traditional dwellings, known as 'manyattas'. Made from mud, sticks, grass, and cow dung, these circular huts offer insights into their simplistic yet efficient way of life.

Safeguarding Nature: Despite the modern world's encroachments, the Maasai maintain a harmonious relationship with nature. Their belief system, which respects all living creatures and their surroundings, offers lessons in sustainability and coexistence.

Luxury Holidays Nepal Experience: At Luxury Holidays Nepal, we believe that travel should be a conduit for genuine cultural exchange. Our guided tours to Maasai villages prioritize respect, mutual understanding, and immersive learning. With us, you won't just witness the Maasai way of life; you'll live it—even if just for a day. From sharing a meal to storytelling sessions by the fire, every moment is curated to bridge worlds and create lasting memories.

Embarking on a journey to the Maasai villages is not just a cultural detour but a deep dive into the soul of Tanzania. With Luxury Holidays Nepal, experience the authentic pulse of East Africa, echoing in the rhythms of Maasai song and dance.

Visa to Visit Tanzania: A Guide by Luxury Holidays Nepal

When planning a dream trip to Tanzania, understanding the visa requirements is essential to ensure a smooth and hassle-free entry. Here's a concise guide to assist you in navigating the visa process for Tanzania.

Who Requires a Visa?

Most nationalities require a visa to enter Tanzania. However, there are exceptions for some countries from the East African and Southern African regions. It's crucial to check the specific requirements for your nationality.

Types of Visas:

Tourist Visa: This is the most common visa for travelers wishing to explore Tanzania for tourism purposes. It's valid for a single entry and typically allows stays of up to 90 days.

Business Visa: For individuals intending to conduct short-term business, participate in trade fairs, or attend business meetings in Tanzania.

Transit Visa: For travelers passing through Tanzania en route to another destination.

Multiple Entry Visa: Suitable for those needing to enter the country multiple times over a year, often for business purposes.

How to Apply:

Visa on Arrival: Citizens of many countries can obtain a visa upon landing at major entry points like Julius Nyerere International Airport (Dar es Salaam) or Kilimanjaro International Airport. This process can sometimes involve waiting in queues.

E-Visa: Tanzania has introduced an e-Visa system where applicants can apply and pay online. After approval, the e-visa is emailed to the applicant, which needs to be printed and shown upon arrival.

Through Tanzanian Diplomatic Missions: You can apply for a visa at Tanzanian embassies or consulates in your country. This is often the preferred method for those who want to sort out visa formalities before traveling.

Documents Typically Required:

  • Passport with at least six months' validity from the date of entry.
  • Passport-sized photographs.
  • Completed visa application form.
  • Visa fee (amount varies based on nationality and type of visa).
  • Return or onward flight ticket.
  • Proof of accommodation or travel itinerary.
  • For business visas: An invitation letter or business contacts in Tanzania.

Visa Fees: Visa fees can vary based on your nationality and the type of visa. As of the last update, the fee for most single-entry tourist visas is $50, though U.S. citizens pay $100. Always check the official Tanzanian immigration website or consult with your local embassy for the most recent fees.

Special Note for Zanzibar: Zanzibar is part of the United Republic of Tanzania. If you've obtained a visa for mainland Tanzania, it is also valid for Zanzibar. However, upon entering Zanzibar, you'll undergo another immigration check.

Luxury Holidays Nepal's Added Value: When you book a Tanzanian experience with Luxury Holidays Nepal, our team provides guidance on the visa process, ensuring you're well-prepared for your journey.

While the visa process is generally straightforward, it's always advisable to begin the process early and be equipped with all necessary documents. This ensures that your Tanzanian adventure starts without a hitch, letting you focus on the wonders awaiting you in this East African gem.

Tanzania - Travel Safety: A Comprehensive Guide by Luxury Holidays Nepal

Tanzania, renowned for its breathtaking landscapes, diverse wildlife, and rich cultural heritage, is a bucket-list destination for many travelers. As with any international travel, understanding the safety landscape is crucial for a stress-free experience. Here's a safety guide for those planning to immerse themselves in the wonders of Tanzania.

General Safety:

Crime: Tanzania is generally safe for tourists. However, as in many destinations worldwide, petty crimes like pickpocketing or bag snatching can occur, especially in crowded places. Always be aware of your surroundings and keep your belongings secure.

Travel in Groups: Especially after dark, it's advisable to travel in groups and stick to well-lit areas. Avoid isolated areas or beaches at night.

Local Customs: Respect local traditions and customs. Dress modestly, especially when visiting religious sites or rural areas.

Health Safety:

Vaccinations: Consult your doctor before traveling to Tanzania. Recommended vaccinations often include yellow fever, typhoid, hepatitis A and B, and rabies.

Malaria: Malaria is prevalent. Consider taking malaria prophylactics, use mosquito nets, and wear repellent.

Water: Drink bottled or boiled water. Avoid tap water and ice in drinks.

Food: Stick to well-cooked meals. Avoid street food or raw foods in places where hygiene might be questionable.

Wildlife and Safari Safety:

Listen to Guides: Always follow the instructions of your safari guides. They are trained to understand animal behavior and ensure your safety.

Stay in the Vehicle: Unless told otherwise, remain in the safari vehicle, especially when near wild animals.

No Flash Photography: Flash can provoke animals. Avoid using it.

Camp Safety: When staying in safari camps or lodges, adhere to safety guidelines, especially at night when wild animals might roam.

Transport Safety:

Road Travel: Drive during daylight hours, as roads might not be well-lit at night. Be cautious, as local driving styles can differ from what you're used to.

Dala-Dalas: These are local minibusses and can often be overcrowded and poorly maintained. If using them, be conscious of pickpocketing.

Ferry Safety: If traveling to places like Zanzibar by ferry, ensure the ferry isn't overcrowded and that you're aware of emergency procedures.

Emergency Numbers:

  • Police: 112 or 999
  • Fire: 112 or 999
  • Ambulance: 112 or 999

Always have the contact information of your country's embassy or consulate in Tanzania.

Best Time to Visit Tanzania: An Insight by Luxury Holidays Nepal

Tanzania, with its vast landscapes, diverse wildlife, and pristine beaches, is a destination that promises unique experiences throughout the year. However, understanding the country's climatic patterns can help travelers optimize their visit. Here's a guide to the best times to explore this East African gem.

Tanzania's Two Main Seasons:

Dry Season (June to October):

  • Weather: Clear skies, fewer mosquitoes, and moderate temperatures.
  • Wildlife Viewing: Animals tend to congregate around water sources, making this an ideal time for safaris. The renowned Great Migration in the Serengeti, where massive herds of wildebeest and zebras move in search of greener pastures, reaches its peak between June and August.
  • Tourist Volumes: July and August see the highest number of tourists due to the migration and summer holidays.
  • Recommendation: A prime time for safaris and outdoor activities.

Wet Season (November to May):

  • Short Rains (November to December): Intermittent showers, usually in the afternoon. The landscape becomes lush and green.
  • Long Rains (March to May): Heavier and more consistent rainfall. Some lodges in remote areas might close due to accessibility issues.
  • Wildlife: Bird-watching is at its best with migratory birds present. While wildlife is more dispersed due to abundant water sources, lush landscapes and fewer crowds offer a different kind of safari experience.
  • Coastal Weather: Warmer with occasional rain. Zanzibar and other islands are ideal for relaxation, especially between January and February.
  • Recommendation: Great for budget travelers due to fewer tourists and off-peak pricing, and for those looking to experience a different, verdant side of Tanzania.

Special Considerations:

Mount Kilimanjaro: While it's possible to climb Kilimanjaro year-round, the best months are during the dry periods: January to March and June to October.

Cultural Visits: If you're interested in cultural tourism, such as visiting the Maasai villages or exploring the historic sites of Zanzibar, the dry months offer more comfortable travel conditions.

Beach Holidays: December to March are the warmest months ideal for beach holidays, especially in Zanzibar, Pemba, and Mafia islands. However, be cautious of the rainy season from March to May.

Luxury Holidays Nepal's Expertise: While these are general guidelines, every traveler's preferences and interests are unique. At Luxury Holidays Nepal, we use our extensive local knowledge to tailor experiences based on your desires, ensuring that your Tanzanian adventure aligns with your expectations and the seasonal offerings of the country.

Tanzania's allure spans throughout the year, and each season provides its own charm. Whether it's the drama of the Great Migration, the serenity of a rain-kissed landscape, or the thrill of summiting Kilimanjaro, Tanzania promises memories that last a lifetime. Decide on your priorities, pack accordingly, and let the magic of Tanzania embrace you.

Breathtaking wildebeest migration though the Serengeti | Kyle Super

Like its northern neighbour Kenya, Tanzania is a country blessed with the epic landscapes, ancient cultures, abundant flora and iconic wildlife that usually spring to mind when one thinks of Africa.

It's largely untamed and unspoiled and contains an enormous variety of stunning landscapes ranging from deserts and grassy savannas to tropical beaches, fertile valleys and the rugged peaks of the Great Rift Valley.

The country is dotted with national parks known for their spectacular scenery and significant wildlife populations. It's here that you'll have the chance to see Africa's iconic 'Big 5' game animals up close and in their natural environments, and to experience the fascinating culture and traditions of the Masai people.

Head to the Serengeti National Park to witness the awe-inspiring sight of the great annual migration, as millions of wildebeest and other animals make their yearly northward journey into Kenya's Masai Mara; or descend into the Ngorongoro Crater, the world's largest caldera, to find a treasure trove of exotic wildlife including lions, elephants, pink flamingoes and the endangered black rhino.

Challenge yourself with an exhilarating summit of Africa's highest peak, the snowcapped Mt Kilimanjaro; and then escape to the unforgettable island of Zanzibar, where you can unwind on breathtaking beaches and wander the labyrinthine streets of Stone Town, soaking up Swahili culture and trawling busy markets for spices, baskets and textiles.

Our all inclusive approach

Featuring quality safari accommodation and wilderness camps, enthusiastic camping crews and porters and private vehicles, our Tanzania adventures provide exceptional value for money. Additionally, we aim to incorporate as many inclusions as possible in the tour cost such as most meals, transferes, game drives, camping services, excursions and national park fees.

Authentic experiences

From summiting Mount Kilimanjaro to witnessing the great migration herds in the Serengeti and experiencing the tribal cultures to watching the sunset over the waters of Zanzibar, our programs are designed to give you a true sense of Tanzania's geographic and cultural diversity.

Kilimanjaro experts

We can organise treks on all the standard Kilimanjaro routes but we prefer to avoid the busiest routes of Machame and Marangu. The less visited camping routes of Shira, Lemosho, Rongai and the Northern Circuit offer the best chances of enjoying Kilimanjaro and actually reaching the summit. A comprehensive medical kit accompanies all our trekking trips and we carry emergency oxygen on all routes.

Quality equipment

You’ll be comforted to know that our camping based treks are supported by quality equipment, starting with tents, sleeping mats, kitchen services, dining tent with chairs and tables and safety equipment.

Experienced local guides

Our excellent trekking guides and camping crews are what make your Tanzania experience special. While our safari guides are skilled in highly skilled at spotting wildlife, our ratio of 2 clients to 1 guide on Kilimanjaro means you will receive the best personal attention and encouragement. Each chief guide has a licence from Kilimanjaro National Park to lead climbs and has his own team of assistant guides and camp staff that ensure an excellent level of service on the mountain.

Leaders in responsible travel

Responsible travel practice is at the heart of our Tanzania programs. Our adventures provide a true wilderness experience by viewing wildlife in their natural habitat and supporting the protection of endangered wildlife species, diverse environments and local communities.

Guide development

Since 2012 we have sponsored a guide every year to complete a scholarship training course through the Kilimanjaro Guide Scholarship Foundation.

Waste disposal and plastic reduction

We carry all of our waste from camp and dispose of it responsibly in the nearest city. Additionally, reusable containers are used to store our food.

Encouragement of women guides

We actively encourage women to break the male dominated world of guiding. While we have two female guides on Mount Kilimanjaro, we also have a number of female kitchen crew and mountain porters.

Safari lodges

In game parks, national parks and rural locations we use 3 to 4 star comfortable properties that reflect the character of the area. Some may have extra facilities such as a swimming pool or private balcony.

Permanent safari camps

Like a tented hotel room, this is the perfect way to experience the African wilderness. We use 3 to 4 star comfortable properties that reflect the character of the area.

We offer two styles of camping; fully supported and semi-participation. Both styles feature quality two person tents erected in scenic wilderness.

In cities or large towns you will be accommodated in 3 to 4 star, twin share properties that are centrally located, comfortable and reliable.

Mountain huts

Some treks feature camping in a communal dormitory with basic shared facilities.

Tanzania's climate varies from fertile west to arid interior to tropical coastline, but as a general rule, the country is usually warm by day and cool by night.

Tanzania has three climatic seasons: the 'short rains' (October - November), the 'long rains' (March - May) and the dry season outside of these months. Downpours generally occur in the late afternoons, with the earlier part of the day usually being warm and sunny.

Mainland Tanzania is divided into four climatic and physiographic regions: the highlands of the northeast and southwest; the high inland mountiand and lake region near Mt Kilimanjaro; the hot arid central plateau; and the humid lowlands of the coast.

Half of the mainland receives insufficient precipitation to support crop cultivation, with the coast and offshore islands receiving high annual rainfalls.

Temperatures plummet near the summit of Mt Kilimanjaro, where it is possible to experience temperatures as low as -20°C (-4°F), with rain, cold, snow and high-altitude conditions all commonplace as you ascend.

Zanzibar and Pemba have high temperatures and humidity year-round, with rainfalls highest in April - May and lowest in November - December.

Time in Tanzania

Tanzania is +3 hours ahead of UTC/GMT

Swahili is the official and primary language of Tanzania and Zanzibar, and is also the lingua franca of central and eastern Africa. English is also an official language and common in commerce, administration and tertiary education. Arabic is spoken in Zanzibar and along the Muslim coast, with many local languages also spoken throughout the country. Attempting a few Swahili greetings and phrases will earn you lots of smiles!

Tanzanian Shilling (divided into cents)

US dollars cash are by far the easiest foreign currency to exchange in Tanzania. It can either be changed to T-shillings, or used directly (but often at a lower rate). We recommend you only take US$ notes from 2006 or newer, and with the new large-head design. Older or torn notes are not accepted in Tanzania.

Euro can also be changed in many places. However the rate is not always as good.

In Tanzania credit cards are becoming more useful and the quite a few hotels now take payment by credit cards. Please be aware identity theft is common so please be careful when using them for payment, and never allow your credit card to be out of your sight at all times.

There are only a few ATM machines in major cities that are connected internationally and reliability is not guaranteed.

Electricity in Tanzania is 230 Volts, at 50 hertz. The most common pin types are D (3 pin round) and G (UK – 3 prong).

Visas are required for passport holders from the following countries:-

New Zealand

United States

United Kingdom

Travellers can now apply online for the Tanzania visa https://eservices.immigration.go.tz/visa/

A single entry visa costs USD$50 and is valid for a stay of up to 90 days.

A multiple entry visa costs USD$100 and is valid for 12 months. No one stay can be longer than 3 months in duration.

NB: American nationals who wish to visit Tanzania for tourism or holiday purposes MUST select a MULTIPLE entry visa while applying online. American nationals are not entitled to a single entry visa.

All other nationalities should check with your nearest embassy or consulate.

Multiple entry visas are not issued, however, those who travel between Tanzania and Kenya, Uganda, Rwanda and Burundi will not need a new visa to re-enter Tanzania provided they re-enter Tanzania while the visa is still valid. Those who go from Tanzania to countries other than Kenya, Uganda, Rwanda and Burundi, will need to obtain a new visa at the entry point to Tanzania.

TRAVEL VIA KENYA

Visas are required for passport holders from the following countries:

Details of obtaining visas are provided in your confirmation kit.

Travellers holding a single entry Kenyan visa can exit Kenya to Tanzania or Rwanda (and also Uganda or Burundi) and re-enter Kenya from those countries without the need to hold a multiple entry visa as long as the visa is still valid. Travellers are still required to have the appropriate visas for Tanzania, Rwanda (or Uganda and Burundi) if required. Please note: Travellers who go to countries other than Tanzania, Uganda, Rwanda and Burundi, will need to obtain a new visa to re-enter Kenya or should apply for a multiple entry visa in their home country prior to travel.

A visa is required and is issued prior to arrival (you will need to print this out and present it to an Immigration Official upon arrival). Visa applications can be made online at: http://www.ecitizen.go.ke/ <http://www.ecitizen.go.ke/>

You need a visa to enter Kenya. Kenyan entry visas are exclusively issued electronically, with passengers required to obtain their e-visas before departure.

The Kenya eVisa application is simple and quick to complete, and strongly recommended as it smooths the immigration process. You are advised to create an eVisa application at least 7 business days before your departure. To apply for an eVisa to visit Kenya, you must apply through the following Kenyan eVisa service website: http://www.ecitizen.go.ke/

You will be required to register as a visitor and then proceed to the Department of Immigration Services section. The eVisa application form caters for: Single entry visa or Transit Visa.

The visas will be processed and sent online to the applicants(s). The applicant(s) will then be required to print out the approved eVisa and present it to an Immigration officer at the first point of entry into Kenya.

Please note the following visa fees:

Single Entry Visa (SJV) valid for three months from date of issue – USD$50

Transit Visa (TV) valid for three days – USD$20

(Note - all eVisa applications attract a USD$1 service charge).

It is possible to apply for an East Africa Tourist Visa (EATV) which allows applicants wishing to travel to the East African Community (EAC) countries of Kenya, Rwanda and Uganda to obtain one visa to cover all three countries. The visa allows for multiple entry within the EAC region within the validity period of 90 days. Once a traveller goes out of the three countries and comes back to either Kenya/Rwanda/Uganda, it will be considered as a new journey and not a continuation, hence the EATV visa is deemed expired and you would then have to apply for a single entry permit to re-enter either Kenya/Rwanda/Uganda. Applicants must apply for the visa through the Embassy of the country they will be entering first and will be obliged to enter only through that country. If entering first via Kenya, the East Africa Tourist Visa (which covers Kenya, Rwanda & Uganda) is available on application at the Kenya High Commission and costs USD$100/AUD$140. Note that this multiple country visa arrangement does NOT include Tanzania.

INTRODUCTION OF e-VISA SERVICES

Visa applications to Kenya can be made online via: www.ecitizen.go.ke <http://www.ecitizen.go.ke>. Culture and customs.

Tanzania’s population is a vibrant mix of religions, races and cultures. Depending on what area you’re traveling in, be prepared to see a variety of cuisines, customs and dress, which directly reflect the diversity of the population.

The island of Zanzibar is predominately Muslim; Maasai are largely found in the North along with other indigenous tribes whose beliefs are largely animist; and Christians, Hindus and other minority groups can be found throughout the country.

Although most Tanzanians may not have many material possessions, travelers can expect a warm welcome and generosity from most locals.

Greeting styles and language differ according to ethnic or tribal group but universally, visitors can expect to receive a warm welcome and a smile from most.

Eating and drinking

Intrepid believes that one of the best ways to experience a country is by eating! Whether you're sampling street food, savoring a cheap eat or indulging in a banquet, there are endless options to choose from wherever you are in the world.

Things to try in Tanzania

Seafood-lovers will adore the range of fresh seafood on offer in Dar es Salaam and Zanzibar. From fragrant fish curries to barbecued shrimp and lobster, the waterfront markets and restaurants are full of wonders from the sea.

2. Indian Cuisine

With a significant Indian population, Tanzanian cities have a fair share of Indian restaurants. Whether you’re visiting a budget cafe or more extravagant restaurant, Indian cuisine is generally a good option for vegetarians as there will always be a few meat-free options to choose from.

These sweet, fried breads can be found at markets and street stalls throughout East Africa, and make a delicious, cheap snack. Although they can be flavored differently, the ones made in Zanzibar usually feature fresh spices and coconut.

Geography and environment

Bordered by Burundi, Kenya , Malawi , Mozambique , Rwanda , Uganda , Zambia and the Democratic Republic of Congo, Tanzania has one of the most diverse natural environments in the world.

While traveling through Tanzania, you’ll be able to see enormous gorges, sprawling savanna, ancient islands, dense woodlands, snow-capped mountain ranges, vast lakes, colonial towns and modern cities.

With the Indian Ocean occupying the eastern side of Tanzania, this country truly does have the best of both worlds. Home to Africa’s highest peak and some of the most famous nature reserves in the world, Tanzania also has eclectic cities and vibrant villages to boast of.

Tanzania’s former capital, Dar es Salaam, is a modern metropolis with a colonial flavor while the regional center of Arusha has retained a village feel.

Zanzibar is in a category of its own with its ancient cobbled streets and unique, heritage-filled buildings.

History and government

Early history.

Home to some of the earliest human remains in the world, the land now known as Tanzania could possibly be one of the first lands to have been inhabited by early humans. Human habitation can be traced back 10,000 years to a time when people lived a hunter-gatherer lifestyle before outside influences arrived bringing with them organized agriculture and cattle farming. Visitors to Tanzania should head to Olduvai Gorge (known as the 'Cradle of Mankind') if interested in the early history of Tanzania and, in fact, the world.

Recent history

Europeans only arrived in the 15th century, via the East Coast. Zanzibar was first controlled by the Portuguese, then by Arabian traders interested in easy access to the Indian Ocean that allowed trade with Asia and beyond. This was also a time when the human slave trade was a lucrative business. The island of Zanzibar became a pivotal place for this trade, with more than 100,000 slaves passing through during this period.

Mainland Tanzania came under the influence of German, Belgian and British colonizers in the 1800s, who explored and mapped the interior of the country. German colonizers brought infrastructure, agriculture and Christianity to Tanzania, but faced resistance from many tribes who fought against being forced into labor and desperately wanted to keep their land and preserve their traditional way of life. During World War I, Germany lost the colony to the British, heralding a new era of colonial rule for the region. More recently, Tanzania adopted its constitution in 1977, held its first multi-party election in 1995 and had its first female presidential candidate in 2005.

Tanzania’s climate changes with its diverse landscapes, so expect variances in weather in different parts of the country.

Generally, January and February are the high season for travel in Tanzania as the hot, dry weather is generally considered to be the most pleasant.

The best time to  visit the Serengeti  is late June to October when the animals are most abundant.

Expect afternoon downpours during the wet season (from March to May); however, during this time you’ll find fewer tourists in Tanzania so you won’t have to compete with crowds.

Is tipping customary in Tanzania?

Tipping isn’t mandatory in Tanzania but a little generosity will be received positively, especially when considering the low wages that Tanzanian service workers are typically paid. Setting aside a small amount for porters, guides and drivers is wise, as is leaving spare change or rounding up the bill at restaurants.

What is the internet access like in Tanzania?

Travelers will be able to access the internet quite easily in the internet cafes of Tanzania’s large cities, but limited to no access should be expected in regional and rural areas.

Can I use my cell phone while in Tanzania?

Cell phone coverage is good in Tanzania’s large cities and towns, but less so in rural and mountainous areas. Ensure you have global roaming activated before leaving home if you wish to use your cell phone.

What are the toilets like in Tanzania?

Squat/pit toilets are the standard in Tanzania, except for western-style flushable toilets that are sometimes available in large hotels, tourist attractions and other modern buildings. Carry your own supply of soap and toilet paper, as they are rarely provided.

What will it cost for a…?

Tanzania's unit of currency is the Tanzanian Shilling (TZS). Here's what you can expect to pay for a:

  • Street snack = 500-3,000 TZS
  • Bottle of local beer = 2,000-4,000 TZS
  • Plate of food from a local eatery = 3,000 TZS
  • Dinner in an international restaurant = 10,000-20,000 TZS

Can I drink the water in Tanzania?

Drinking tap water isn't recommended in Tanzania. For environmental reasons, try to avoid buying bottled water. Fill a reusable water bottle or canteen with filtered water. Ask your leader where filtered water can be found; some hotels we stay in may have drinking water available. It's also advisable to avoid ice in drinks and peel fruit and vegetables before eating.

Are credit cards accepted widely in Tanzania?

Credit cards are usually accepted by large hotels and western-style restaurants but not by smaller vendors. Ensure you have adequate cash to cover purchases not able to be made on credit.

What is ATM access like in Tanzania?

ATMs are easily found in large cities and urban centers but are rarer in small towns, rural areas and villages. Be sure to have other payment methods available when venturing out of the big cities as ATMs aren't always an option.

Does my trip to Tanzania support The Intrepid Foundation?

Yes, all Intrepid trips support the Intrepid Foundation. In fact, we make a donation on behalf of every traveler. Trips to Tanzania directly support our foundation partner, The Kilimanjaro Porters Assistance Project (KPAP) .

The Kilimanjaro Porters Assistance Project (KPAP) provides education, support and advocacy to ensure the fair and ethical treatment of Kilimanjaro Porters. The Porters who guide and support trekkers are often overworked and underpaid; donations from our trips support KPAP to identify and monitor tour operators committed to the fair treatment of mountain crew during a Kilimanjaro climb.

Intrepid will double the impact by dollar-matching all post-trip donations made to The Intrepid Foundation.

Do I need to purchase travel insurance before traveling?

Absolutely. All passengers traveling with Intrepid are required to purchase travel insurance before the start of their trip. Your travel insurance details will be recorded by your leader on the first day of the trip. Due to the varying nature, availability and cost of health care around the world, travel insurance is very much an essential and necessary part of every journey.

Welcome to Africa's "Garden of Eden"… and the destination that some would say is the land of safaris. Our Tanzania tours will transport you to "the place where life began" where you'll witness the "Big Five" on private game drives in Serengeti National Park, Ngorongoro and beyond while enjoying experiences that reveal the essence of East Africa on a small group safari or a family-inspired adventure.

Welcome to Tanzania

Wherever you go in Tanzania, opportunities abound for getting to know the county's people and cultures with once-in-a-lifetime moments.

A picnic lunch in ngorongoro crater, game drives and a picnic in africa's original "garden of eden".

Believed by many to have been Africa's original "Garden of Eden," Ngorongoro Crater ranks among the world's largest calderas, and contains one of the oldest and most diverse ecosystems on Earth. Within this dormant volcano's walls lie short grasslands, swamps, forests and a freshwater lake – all of which inspire a continuous parade of migrating wildlife. You'll not only embark on a game drive in this "lost world," but a private picnic lunch inside the crater will be a highlight of your trip.

Meet the Maasai people

Learn the ways of the maasai at a traditional boma.

A highlight of your family's Tanzania safari is your visit to a Maasai boma – a nomadic village preserving traditonal Maasai cultural customs, consisting of small huts made of mud and cow dung for sleeping and cooking. Can you picture living here with your family? During your visit, Maasai villagers will demonstrate their spear-throwing, bow-and-arrow and other traditional skills. You'll also have an opportunity to visit a local primary school to talk with the children and their teacher.

Stories almost as old as the Earth itself await you in Tanzania

Gliding in a hot air balloon high above the vast plains of the Serengeti, observing the "circle of life" below… a picnic lunch in the wildlife treasure-trove that is Ngorongoro Crater, a volcanic caldera that some believe may have been the "Garden of Eden"… a visit to Oldupai Gorge, home to some of the earliest evidence of humans on Earth… Tauck experiences revealing the essence of Tanzania…

Follow the migration in a mobile camp

Our first moving safari's mobile camp follows migrating wildlife.

Every year, over a million wildebeest and more than 200,000 zebras make a trek across Tanzania from the southern reaches of Serengeti National Park to the Masai Mara National Reserve and back again, instinctively driven to constantly search for food and water. On Tauck's first "moving safari," follow this "Great Migration" with a three-night stay in tented accommodations at Legendary Serengeti Mobile Camp – moving with the wildlife as they traverse the heart of Serengeti National Park, and heading out on game drives each morning and afternoon.

Private game drives throughout your trip

Set off on private game drives on specially built safari vehicles.

Hop aboard your specially built safari vehicle and make tracks on a daily game drive (or two) across the classic African savannah stretching out before you... in Tanzania's Serengeti National Park, and in Kenya's Amboseli National Park and Masai Mara Reserve. Guiding you on your treks in search of the "Big Five" and other iconic wildlife are our expert drivers, trackers, rangers, and Tauck Directors... all highly experienced and eager to share their knowledge while keeping everyone engaged, safe and sound on the adventure of a lifetime!

Tanzania Tours

Safari, so good.

One of the most popular tourist destinations in Africa, Tanzania is well-established as one of the best wildlife-viewing destinations in the world. Safaris follow the trail of giant herds of antelope or wildebeest across the Serengeti, while lions lounge in the shade waiting for their next meal to trot by. On the horizon looms the conical silhouette of Kilimanjaro, beckoning the strong of lung and leg, and just off the coast the beaches and Arabian-infused culture of Zanzibar offer travelers a very different Africa.

Tanzania Tours

Do you want to see Africa's iconic Big Five wildlife? Then a Tanzania tour should be at the top of your list.

Home to Africa's iconic Mt. Kilimanjaro and an incredible array of fascinating wildlife, our Tanzania tours will create a lifetime of memories.

Take in extraordinary views and explore lush valleys dense with tropical rainforest are on offer to all those wishing to trek to the top of Africa's highest mountain, while the National Parks of the Serengeti and Ngorongoro crater provide visitors with great opportunities to view the vast array of animals and birds that populate this beautiful African country.

Discover the incredible landscapes and warm hospitality on one of our group Tanzania tours. Whether you want to join us on our ascent of the iconic Mt Kilimanjaro or simply visit the Serengeti National Park to experience some of the very best wildlife viewing in the world, you'll look back at your tour to Tanzania as the trip of a lifetime.

For the perfect end to your stay in Tanzania why not spend a few nights exploring the beautiful islands, beaches and tropical blue waters of Zanzibar?

Our Tanzania tours also take you to the Serengeti National Park, which plays a key part in one of nature's greatest spectacles - the wildebeest migration. Every year, millions of wildebeest make their way from Kenya's Masai Mara Game Reserve, crossing the treacherous, Nile crocodile-infested waters of the Nile River and head back to the southern Serengeti to give birth to a new generation.

During the months of January to March, the migratory herds of wildebeest, zebra and other wildlife descend on southern Serengeti for calving season, giving travellers on safari in Tanzania the unique opportunity to see this live. Predator interaction is dramatic during this period as well, as lion, leopard and cheetah move into the area to take advantage of the vulnerable calves - creating the ultimate battle for survival.

The herds will slowly begin to make their way north between the months of March to August before they descend back into the Masai Mara - if you're lucky to be on an African safari at the time - you may see some early river crossings at the Grumeti River.

Thinking about going on a Tanzania tour but need some encouragement? Here are some quick facts that will make you want to explore Africa .

FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

Tour reviews.

Conscientious in early communication; knowledgeable, humorous and caring tour guides; an exemplary itinerary that was well organized yet flexible; an overall extraordinary experience. I'd recommend them enthusiastically.

This is our first travel through Encounters Travel and so far the arrangement is working very well. Our travel is not until April 2017 so I am more than hopeful all will continue to run as smoothly as it has so far.

When a single women in her 50's, traveling from the US to Egypt, stumbles across a website offering a tour, and then they make her feel totaling comfortable about every step of the process, you know you've hit a homerun!

Took care of every single detail from prior to our arrival in Cario until we we're dropped of at the airport a week later. Our hotels, tours, meals, and tour group we're all wonderful. Our tour guide was wonderful! The price was great and the people wonderful!

My experience with Encounters was excellent from start to finish. The Tour Guide, Sheriff, was the most passionate, enthusiastic and professional guide I have ever had on a tour and his love for Egypt really made me enjoy my time so much more. I was cautious about arriving in Egypt given the current circumstances about the country, but felt safer that I did living in London as soon as I arrived. All of the Encounters staff are very professional.

Tanzania, officially the United Republic of Tanzania, is a country in Eastern Africa, located in the African Great Lakes area. The country borders Uganda and Kenya to the north, Burundi, Rwanda and the Democratic Republic of the Congo to the west, Malawi, Mozambique and Zambia to the south, and the Indian Ocean to the east.

The Zanzibar Archipelago is located on the eastern shore, which is humid and hot. On the Zambian border, Kalambo Falls, on the Kalambo River, is situated. This is the second highest uninterrupted waterfall in Africa. Tanzania also has 16 national parks.

Due to the ongoing global impact of coronavirus (COVID-19) and the likelihood of international borders remaining closed for an extended period of time, Adventure Hub Nepal has suspended all trips until October 2020.The COVID-19 pandemic had paused the world for months. Given the restrictions and protocols although most of the industry has resumed through time, the tourism industry in Nepal remained shut ever since the pandemic has been declared. The busiest streets of the major tourist hub in the heart of Kathmandu; Thamel went through a pin drop silence for almost 8 months now. As off all the travellers who have planned to visit the Himalayas in 2020 had to postpone their trip to the hopeful following year.

On 16 Sept, 2020 the cabinet meeting held by the government of Nepal, has declared to resume the tourism industry by allowing all the tourism activities following proper health and safety measures. The cabinet passed the decision to allow the international tourists by resuming the On-arrival visa service from 17 October, 2020. The guideline has instructed the tourists arriving in Nepal are required to obtain a PCR Test with a COVID-19 Negative remark; not older than 72 hours. Tourist with the negative PCR report are not bound to any kind of quarantine or self-isolation upon their arrival in Nepal and shall be able to continue the journey for their further destination in Nepal, adopting the safety measures and following the health and sanitization guidelines of WHO..............

Tasmania or Tanzania? Bindi Irwin's Cradle Mountain holiday blunder by US magazine People

Terri and Bindi Irwin stand with their arms around each other while Robert Irwin stands on a large rock behind them

  • In short: A major US celebrity news publication has mistaken Tasmania for Tanzania, after Bindi Irwin posted holiday photos from Cradle Mountain.
  • People magazine wrote "Bindi was joined by her husband, daughter, mother and brother for the trip to the East African country", referring to Tanzania, which is more than 11,000 kilometres from Tasmania.
  • What's next?: A tourism academic says Tasmania's tourism body could capitalise on the mix-up in a quirky campaign.

Tasmania has had many tourism slogans over the years from 'Come down for air' to 'Go behind the scenery', but perhaps it should consider 'not to be confused with Tanzania'.

A major United States celebrity news publication has mistaken Australia's island state for the East African country after the world-famous Irwin family visited Cradle Mountain, with Bindi Irwin posting images from her family's trip on her Instagram, which has a following of 5.7 million people.

She made the trip to the Tasmanian national park with her husband Chandler, daughter Grace, brother Robert and mother Terri.

Composite of Irwin family holiday photos in Tasmania.

Attracting global attention, it was picked up by People which touts itself as the number one source for the "most trustworthy celebrity news".

It published a story about the trip, noting "Bindi was joined by her husband, daughter, mother and brother for the trip to the East African country".

People magazine web story about Bindi Irwin.

"On Saturday, June 22, the Australian TV personality, 25, shared a carousel of photos on Instagram from a family vacation in the East African country, tagging the resort where they stayed, Cradle Mountain Lodge, in the last photo."

The People article was also posted to its 9.7 million followers on Facebook.

The wildlife loving family are dressed in puffer jackets in front of the iconic Dove Lake, and several social media followers aptly pointed out the current temperature in Tanzania was 29 degrees.

One person wrote "I once had a map of Australia that labelled Tasmania as Tanzania. A lot of people are mistaking the two and still getting paid".

Another asked: "Are they on top of Mt Kilimanjaro with a toddler?!?"

Celebrity reach

Those in the tourism business said the gaffe wasn't all bad news for Tasmania.

Amy Hills from the Tourism Industry Council of Tasmania said it would still draw attention to Cradle Mountain as a destination.

"While it appears this an unfortunate mistake, as clearly Tasmania is a long way from Tanzania, in an odd way it gives us an ability to create even more buzz about our iconic Cradle Mountain," Ms Hills said.

"When influencers like Bindi Irwin share snapshots of our island, especially while enjoying it with friends and family, it has great reach and potential impact.

"Hopefully those reading the article will visit Bindi's actual post and see those snow-capped mountains and the iconic cradle landscape, sparking them to investigate their own trip to Tassie, during the winter months."

Associate professor Anne Hardy from the University of Tasmania's school of social sciences said influencers and celebrities had a huge impact on people's interest in places.

"Millions and millions will see their post, so they have a massive impact," she said.

She pointed to a summer visit to Cradle Mountain by actor Nicole Kidman.

"What we can see is when you have an influencers in a particular area, when people go to that area because of the influencer, they often try and mimic what the influencer has done," she said.

"It has a profound impact on where people go and what experiences they seek."

Opportunity beckons

Dr Hardy said the Tanzania mix-up could be a problem if people were seeking out an experience they couldn't find.

"From Tasmania's perspective there's a risk they'll lose tourists to Tanzania, but I think most people are smart enough to work it out provided there's not a Cradle Mountain over in Tanzania," she said.

She said Tasmania and Tanzania could work together like a twin-city arrangement.

"They could have a lost traveller agency if you've got travellers over in Tanzania seeking wombats?"

A social media post promoting an article about Bindi Irwin's family holiday

Dr Hardy said Tourism Tasmania could turn it into a new campaign.

"Tourism Tasmania is doing some really quirky and humorous marketing at the moment, so this story probably provides them with an opportunity," she said.

The agency recently unveiled its 'Odd Jobs campaign' where it invites tourists to apply for positions to organise oysters and walk wombats.

"Tourism Tasmania has become synonymous with super quirky marketing, so for me this provides them with another little opportunity and they can turn it around for the state," she said.

"We've always been known as quirky and unusual and this just plays into our brand strength."

Cradle Mountain in winter.

Dr Hardy said in all seriousness, the Tasmanian tourism industry was having a more difficult time than usual, with this year's Dark Mofo festival — a large drawcard in winter — scaled down.

"There hasn't been as many visitors around, so any quirky, fun stories around the state from people like Bindi will help those operators who would really like more business at this time of the year," she said.

"The power of word of mouth and the power of an influencers is super important when people are making decisions on where to do."

Tourists and sightseers at a coastal lookout.

Tasmania's Deputy Premier Michael Ferguson said he was "sorry People magazine haven't recently been to Tasmania like the Irwins have, we're so pleased for their time here in our state".

"I think People magazine might like to run a second column about how good it is here in Tassie, the best island on earth."

Mr Ferguson said he didn't think it would be damaging for Tasmania's brand.

"The interest is welcome in the sense that we get the same kind of questions from our friends in America who occasionally think the Tasmanian Devil is from a little island off Africa and it only stimulates conversation and makes people look into the truth of the matter and fall in love with our state."

Not the first time

Confusion about Tasmania and Tanzania seems common place, and the state's entry in online encyclopedia Wikipedia is quick to clear up the state is 'not to be confused with Tanzania'.

In 1988, a Pakistani cricketer was mistakenly sent to Tanzania instead of Tasmania where he was set to play cricket in Launceston for Old Scotch.

It was reported at the time that spin bowler Matiullah Khan said his travel agent confused the state with the African country and sent him halfway around the world, significantly delaying his arrival for the summer cricket season.

He did eventually arrive, but the saga caused anxiety for the club which was anticipating his arrival and Khan was said to be 'not happy' after spending four days in Tanzania before starting the trip again.

JackJumpers basketball coach Scott Roth has also joked that he didn't know where Tasmania was before taking on the inaugural coaching role, thinking he was headed to Tanzania to coach their basketball team.
