Street Art in Belfast
Delve into Belfast's vibrant street art scene on a self-guided walking tour. We've rounded up some of the city's top pieces in our street art map and guide.
Each year, Belfast attracts a host of international artists who add to the ever-evolving canvas of our city’s streets. We’ve rounded up just a small selection of the street art Belfast has to offer. Discover them on a self-guided walking tour using our map below. Our streets are always changing, so while you’re exploring you might even come across new artworks!
Golden Hares of Rathlin Island
Annatomix, 2018 Castle Street
Annatomix’s beautiful geometric hare can be found just off Castle Street, at the entrance to Marquis Street. Though the Irish hare is one of Europe’s rarest animals, some of the largest colonies can be found in Northern Ireland and there’s a group on Rathlin Island, off the north coast of Antrim, with a distinct genetic variation – the ‘golden’ hare.
Keep Her Lit
ADW, 2016 Union Street
With a human heart fitted with a pressure clock set among pipes and chains, this unique piece by ADW has industrial themes, complemented by the electrical box included in the artwork.
In Your Face- Belfast Spring
Studio Gift, 2023 James Street South
This stunning mural on a former linen mill portrays a symbol of new beginnings. Just like the flax flowers from which linen is made, spring is often associated with a fresh start. Traditionally flax plants are given to newly weds to honor their new life together!
Aches, 2020 Kent Street
If you’re talking a stroll down Kent Street, don’t miss Aches 3D mural ‘Disruption’ above the Bingo hall! Captured is Stephen Considine from BipolarBear Wear- an organisation which sells gear to raise money for mental health charities.
Mikey- The Man with the Atom Tattoo
Voyder, 2023 North Street/ McKibben’s Court
This piece of artwork captures Mikey- a close friend of Voyder’s who pushed him artistically to become the successful artist he is today. Mikey is pictured in a freight yard where the two of them used to paint train carriages. He has now become a talented tattoo artist!
Blurry Eyed
Dan Kitchener, 2016 Talbot Street
This mural depicting a soaked urban street was created freehand without the use of guides or stencils. Find it on Talbot Street in the Cathedral Quarter.
When You Weren't Looking
Kitsune Jolene, 2022 Queen Street
This stunning piece of artwork by Belgian artist Kitsune was nominated as one of the top pieces of street art in the world in 2022. This mural echoes the message that magic always comes your way when you are least expecting it.
R.O.A, 2023 Donegall Street
Belgian artist R.O.A has painted this large squirrel as part of Hit the North 2023. R.O.A takes his inspiration from animals- particularly showcasing the lifecycle of life and death. Find this distinguished mural on the side of the Irish Times building on Donegall Street.
Still Water
Nomad Clan, 2017 Hill Street
Manchester-based Nomad Clan touch on Belfast’s industrial heritage in this piece, which shows a modern young woman face-to-face with a wolf, representing past tensions and an acknowledgment of past and present.
The Son of Protagoras
MTO, 2014 Talbot Street
This striking piece of art is named after the agnostic Greek philosopher ‘Protagoras’. After learning that there is still a large division between the protestant and catholic communities within Northern Ireland, MTO created this mural. The boy represents the son of peace and the arrows which have killed the dove are symbolic of the two conflicting religions.
The Duel of Belfast, Dance by Candlelight
Conor Harrington, 2012 Hill Street
This stunning piece on Hill Street in the Cathedral Quarter was painted by Irish artist Conor Harrington. It hints towards the colonial West, depicting two duelling men and an onlooker.
Star People
Rocket01, 2023 Kent Street
Take a walk down Kent Street to see this incredible design by Rocket01. The artist’s surreal and futuristic style of painting is truly impressive.
Nesting Time
Andrey Palval, 2023 Union Street
Aundrey Palval’s ‘Nesting Time’ portrays a little tern- typically a type of seabird- mothering a chicken. Palval’s artwork beautifully captures photorealistic images of birds and can be found across the globe. Find it on Kent Street just down from The Sunflower Pub.
Life Preserver
Shane Sutton, High Street
This piece by Shane Sutton demonstrates Belfast’s vulnerability to rising sea levels and the imminent threat of climate change. Shane designed this mural in partnership with Friends of Earth and Strange Spaces.
Smug, 2016 High Street
This stunning portrait can be found on the side of the Ulster Sports Club at the bottom of High Street. The three-story image of a chef with a lobster was created by Australian artist, Smug.
Let Me Unsee
Art of Asbestos, 2022 North Street
Don’t miss this eye catching piece created at Hit the North Street Art Festival 2022 – the mural represents a feeling of being overwhelmed by today’s technological world and the desire to switch off your eyes and process fewer things.
ADW, 2017 Dunbar Street
ADW’s iconic painting of a diver in an antique diving suit carrying a mermaid in his arms can be found on Dunbar Street.
Woman And Parrot
SANCHO, 2018 Gresham Street
Created by Columbian street artist Sancho Medina as part of the Hit the North 2018 festival, this colourful image of a woman and parrot stands over three storeys on Gresham Street. Sancho’s work is inspired by man’s close relationship with nature.
Spirit of Commerce
Irony, 2020 Pottinger’s Entry
Discover this incredible piece by Irony, which was part of the Belfast entries project, on Pottinger’s Entry.
The Acrobat
Alice Pasquini, 2018 Donegall Street
Alice Pasquini’s ‘The Acrobat’ is a tribute to Will Chamberlin, the director of Belfast Circus School who passed away in 2017. This piece portrays an acrobat in a state of repose in mid air, symbolizing Chamberlin’s impact across the community.
Various Pieces
BustArt (2022), Annatomix (2023) Kent Street
Both of these eye catching mural’s were painted as part of Hit the North Festival. Neo-pop artist, Bust, created ‘Various Pieces’ (on the left) as part of Hit the North 2022. Annatomix took inspiration from Bust’s colour palette at this year’s festival and created a cartoon style backdrop for their signature fox.

A Guide To Discovering The Best Street Art Belfast Has To Offer
By Author James March
Posted on Last updated: January 18, 2023
If you fancy seeking out some Belfast street art, you’ve landed in the right place (note: if you’re looking for murals, which are very different, see our Belfast murals guide!).
While some cities are famous for a prominent landmark like a museum or a cathedral, nothing is as immediately visual or visceral as a piece of awe-inspiring street art.
And in a city as famous for its visuals as Belfast, it’s no surprise there’s a host of colourful street art for you to feast your eyes on!
In the guide below, you’ll find a mix of the best street art Belfast has to offer. So, dive on in!
Table of Contents
Some quick need-to-knows about street art in Belfast
Photo via Google Maps
Seeing the different street art Belfast has to offer is relatively easy, once you know where to look. However, there are a few need-to-knows:
1. We’re not talking about murals
First though, a quick distinction needs to be made! Street art is not the same as a mural (very important in the context of Belfast). Murals typically form part of the architecture they’re painted on and the artist will have been commissioned and paid (check out our murals guide for much more on this).
2. Street art comes and goes
Belfast street art, however, is a far more transient medium and which is why in a vibrant street art city like Belfast you need to visit them while you can! Work can be either abstract or making a statement. Either way, there’s no guarantee it’ll be around for long.
3. An ever-changing landscape
That transience, however, means you’ll see a slightly different Belfast each time you visit. The prospect of an ever-changing canvas is seductive and should be embraced! But for now, read on to find out more about (at the time of writing, at least) some of Belfast’s coolest street art.
4. A nice alternative to galleries
There’s an almost endless number of art galleries in Belfast , but the city’s street art is world’s apart. Rambling from piece to piece is one of the more unique things to do in Belfast , and you’ll see parts of the city you never knew existed as you stroll.
Our favourite Belfast Street Art (and where to find it)
Below, you’ll find a mix of some of the better known street art Belfast has to offer along with several often-missed pieces that are tucked away off the tourist trails.
There’s everything from the magnificent ‘Blurry Eyed’ and the mesmerizing ‘Whitewashing a Rembrandt’ to ‘Keep Her Lit’ and much more.
1. Blurry Eyed
Depicting a rainy street scene lit up in a flurry of neon signs, Blurry Eyed by Dan Kitchener is a colourful addition to Talbot Street in the city centre’s Cathedral Quarter .
2. Whitewashing a Rembrandt
Just around the corner in a small car park on Hill Street lies Whitewashing a Rembrandt. Created by Lisbon-based artist PANG, it shows a classical portrait being whitewashed by a painter in the corner.
3. Still Waters
Staying on Hill Street, Still Waters by Manchester-based Nomad Clan explores Belfast’s industrial past and present by showing a modern young woman face-to-face with a wolf.
4. Keep Her Lit
There’s a steampunk element to Keep Her Lit on Union Street. Created by Dublin-based artist ADW, it shows a human heart fitted with a pressure clock set among pipes and chains.
5. Golden Hares of Rathlin Island
A striking geometric interpretation of Rathlin Island’s famous golden hares, Golden Hares of Rathlin Island by Birmingham-based artist Annatomix can be spotted on Castle Street.
6. RuPaul Mural
Created by Emmalene Blake and Lanni Powder, this colourful piece on Little Donegal Street shows RuPaul along one of his favourite catchphrases from his popular Drag Race TV show.
7. The Son of Protogoras
Located in a car park on Talbot Street, The Son of Protogoras by MTO touches on Belfast’s past conflicts and depicts a boy clutching a dove that has been struck by two arrows.
8. Conflict
Vividly depicting a fight between a crow and a snake while an arrow goes flying past, Conflict by Spanish artist Sabek can be seen on Talbot Street.
9. Deep Love
Another great piece from ADW can be found on Dunbar Street. Deep Love shows a diver in an antique diving suit carrying a mermaid in his arms.
10. Belfast Romances
A cool pop art addition to the city’s street art scene, Belfast Romances by Leo Boyd is a colourful piece representing the artist’s favourite things about Belfast, with the City Hall at its heart.
11. The Chef
Located on High Street and three stories high, The Chef by Australian artist Smug is an exceptionally well-crafted image of a young chef holding a lobster.
12. The Duel of Belfast
A sublime black and white piece on Hill Street by Irish artist Conor Harrington, The Duel of Belfast depicts two dueling men and hints at the decadence of the colonial west.
13. Pelicans
A striking piece on Pottingers Entry by Manchester-based Nomad Clan, Pelicans shows the pelicans from the Pottinger family crest while the Asian flowers represent trading routes from Belfast’s industrial past.
Belfast street art tour
As was the case in our Belfast murals guide , we’re going to recommend a guided tour of the various street art Belfast has to offer.
One of the reasons for this is that you’ll get a better understanding of each piece of art, but also because street art can also be tricky to find at times, as it comes and goes.
1. What’s involved
Taking place every Sunday at noon, Seedhead Arts’ walking tour is a great way to discover more about the awesome artworks dotted around Belfast. Now running for three years and lasting around two hours, you’ll learn about the city’s legacy of conflict and how artists from all over the world have come together to interpret Belfast’s unique character.
The Street Art Walking Tour costs £10.
The walking tour is highly rated on TripAdvisor. With a 5 out of 5 rating from 229 of its 237 reviews, it’s the rated #10 of 223 tours available in Belfast.
What Belfast street art have we missed?
I’m sure we’ve unintentionally missed out on some other great street art Belfast has to offer.
Please shout away in the comments with the names/locations of any ones you know of and love and we’ll check them out asap.
FAQs about the best street art Belfast has in 2021
We’ve had a lot of questions over the years asking about everything from what’s the newest street art in Belfast to which works should be avoided as they’re in areas of Belfast to avoid .
In the section below, we’ve popped in the most FAQs that we’ve received. If you have a question that we haven’t tackled, ask away in the comments section below.
What is the best street art Belfast has to offer?
Our favourites are ‘Whitewashing a Rembrandt’ and the brilliant ‘Golden Hares of Rathlin Island’.

‘Blurry Eyed’ really is incredibly impressive. It’s more like something you’d see framed in a gallery than something you’d find painted on a wall.

Belfast’s Street Art
Belfast, Northern Ireland, United Kingdom (UK)
Bucket List Experience
Take a tour of Belfast’s fascinating street art, and learn about the country’s troubled history
Though Belfast may be associated with the political graffiti of the Peace Wall (which commemorates the Troubles), the contemporary street art in the city centre is a more vibrant display of modern-day creativity.
There’s barely an inch of bare wall space left in the Cathedral Quarter, where publicly daubed artworks span from tiny, blink-and-you’ll-miss-it pieces to huge, beautiful murals. Indeed, the city has become something of a hub for international street artists, who come to leave their mark on any available surface.
Pieces change constantly, with murals painted over and new pieces popping up in different locations, so taking an artist-led tour is the best way to tick off all the best current works. They’ll lead you to the most impressive spots and tell you the story (and scandalous gossip) behind the art.
Getting there & doing it
The tours leave from outside the Duke of York in the middle of the Cathedral Quarter (which means you’re in a great spot for lunch when the tour is finished).
When to do it
Tours run most Sundays, all year round. See the website for a calendar of dates.

Larrys Story
Hello. I’m Larry Murphy, a born and bred, super proud ‘Belfastian’. I worked the best part of 30 years in the Banking Industry, based across different locations in Belfast City Centre, so I have plenty of experiences to share. That eventful chapter of my life closed in 2017 and the wonderful world of tour-guiding became my new passion.
The city has changed dramatically over those years and yet some things never change such as our warm hospitality and humor. Belfast is a city of stories, fascinating characters, significant events and beautiful architecture. I have always loved meeting people and can’t wait to tell you about my home city.
Pauls Story
Hi, my name is Paul Moyna, one of the proudest ‘Belfastian’s’ you will meet. I absolutely love my native city and am passionate about the people, history and stories she holds. There’s nowhere else I’d rather be.
Born in 1980, I’ve lived all my years here, I love talking, people and Belfast. For 18 years I had worked for an engineering company and due to redundancy in 2017 it allowed me to become the ‘master of my own destiny’. This is when I chose to engineer my own career. Making my dream job of being a host for my beautiful city and tourist guide a reality. I spent almost 30 enjoyable months in part-time college education, training for various tourism and hospitality certificates. I am now a fully certified tour guide with several years experience, countless hours of research and a lifetime of stories to tell.
Belfast is an amazing, safe, vibrant city with many things to see and do. This once troubled capital now stands a city reborn, holding its charm and character From rich culture to architectural monuments, art and museums the people of Belfast are some of the friendliest in the world. One thing’s for sure – your guaranteed good craic.

We had an awesome tour with Larry! He took a large group of us on a curated tour of Belfast with an emphasis on sailortown. He was an extremely knowledgeable and engaging guide. We had a great time, which is high praise for walking a few hours in rainy Belfast weather.
Sarah Broitman
We are lucky to have met Paul and done an tour with him. He took us to the Peace Walls and explained the history of the Troubles very well. His stories of growing up in Belfast and his handmade photo books really made the tour feel special and personal. We learned so much and it was the highlight of our trip!
Massive research into their tours but more importantly fun and informative guides that will bring the city to life and offer memories for life

It's an unforgettable experience walking with Paul in the city of Belfast, though on a snowy day. We got to know the city and its culture and history through the murals. Highly recommended!

A Tour of The Street Art of Belfast
Last updated: June 12, 2022 . Written by Laurence Norah - 2 Comments
One of our favourite things we did when we were in Belfast was to take a tour of Belfast’s street art. The city is well known for its political murals, but in recent years there has been a growth in street art of a less political nature, meaning there is a wide variety of different types of art to take in.
In today’s post, I’m going to share some photos of Belfast’s street art, and then provide you with the information you need to take your own tour of the street art of Belfast – including all the different types of art you can see, and your options for finding them.
Street Art in Belfast
Note there is a lot of street art in Belfast, far more than I could fit into one post, or even find. These are just some of my favourite pieces, starting with the contemporary street art murals, the majority of which came about as part of various initiatives to promote art on the streets.
I really liked this piece, which reminded me of a similar piece of street art in Glasgow . This, it turns out, is because it’s by the same artist, the Australian street artist Sam Bates, also known as Smug .
There are a lot of different subjects covered on Belfasts walls. This one, we were told, must have been technically challenging due to all the fine lines – not easy with a spray can. I can believe that! It’s by artist Louis Masai .
Street art can definitely be thought provoking. This one is titled “The son of Protagaros”, and is by the street artist MTO .
Protagoras was an ancient Greek philosopher who it is thought did not believe in God. The dove in this image represents the dove of peace, killed by arrows marked with the crosses of the Knights of Malta and the Latin Cross. So you can make of that what you will.
This was one of my favourite pieces because I love dragons and space! It’s a space dragon, with every part of the dragon made up from a spaceship that featured in Star Wars. From the head, you can see Jabba the Hutt’s pleasure craft, and then as you work back you will identify more.
This one is by Bristol based street artist Andy Council – Bristol of course being famous for it’s street art, as well as being the home of street artists Banksy. Check our our guide to the street art of Bristol for more.
This whimsical art piece is found on the shutters of a former fishing tackle shop which is now an art shop. As the shutters are rolled away when the shop is open, you’ll want to visit outside of opening hours to see this piece by street artist Elph .
This is another work of incredible detail that definitely warrants a close up look.
This was a new one on me – 3D street art! As you can see from the writing above the piece, “3D Glasses in Sunflower”.
Sunflower is the pub over the road, but in our case, our tour guide had 3D glasses we could use. I’ve never seen three dimensional street art, so this was pretty cool! This one is by the artist EMIC .
Another really awesome piece, this one by Christina Angelina , also known as Starfighter, which represents Pandora’s box. The three characters represent the same person, in various stages of opening and not opening the box. Very Schrödinger’s Cat .
Here’s a picture of some street art with a street artist! This is Tim, aka Verz , who was leading our tour of the street art in Belfast. He is also the artist behind this piece, and he specialises in art featuring dogs.
Originally Verz largely did images of dog breeds that were often negatively perceived by the public, with the idea of sharing the idea that perception is not always truth. This image, on the other hand, if of his own dog. Which is obviously, very cute!
This collection of street art is directly opposite the Duke of York pub, down an alleyway by the Dark Horse pub, and features a great many scenes of figures from Belfast history. Occasionally private events happen at these pubs, which means you might not be able to come all the way in to the courtyard.
So now it’s time to share a few of the political murals. You can also find these throughout the city. We saw most of them while on our Black Cab tour as many of the more political ones are outside the main tourist areas.
We’d definitely recommend seeing these as part of a tour, as the guide will be able to explain the history and significance of the murals as well as Belfast’s fractious history.
For those of you not aware, Northern Ireland is a part of the United Kingdom, and has been since 1921, when Ireland was partitioned up. Northern Ireland at the time was largely made up of unionists, who were predominantly of the Protestant faith, whilst southern Ireland, or the Republic of Ireland, was generally made up of nationalists, largely of the Catholic faith.
Of course, this split wasn’t perfectly even, with both sides living in each country. This division down lines of belief and national identity within Northern Ireland and the Republic of Ireland led to three decades of violence, generally known as the Troubles , which had a significant impact on life in Belfast. This conflict is deemed to have ended in 1998, with the signing of the Good Friday Agreement.
Obviously, two paragraphs is insufficient to summarise thirty years of trouble, and the full history of a country, but that will give you something to look up at least!
The summer of 69, other than being a classic song, was also the last summer that brought us the sixties “summer of love”, and other, free-spirited, peace loving vibes.
Belfast didn’t quite experience this type of revolution unfortunately, and this mural seeks to show what the summer of 69 might have been like in the city during the Troubles.
This is a mural in tribute to Bobby Sands. Bobby was a member of the paramilitary group the Irish Republican Army, also known as the IRA. He died in prison in 1981 whilst on a hunger strike.
Many of the political murals take up long stretches of street, depicting a wide range of scenes from Belfast’s history.
King William III, also know as William of Orange, or King Billy, was the King of England, Ireland and Scotland. He was a Protestant who fought the Catholic King of France, and the Orange Order movement is named for him.
To this day, every year the orange order marches in celebration of his victory at the Battle of the Boyne in 1690, when he defeated the deposed English King James II, and ensured the Protestant faith in Ireland continued to rise in strength.
How to See Street Art in Belfast
Of course, it’s not hard to walk around Belfast yourself and see street art, as there’s a lot of it on the sides of buildings here.
There are also regular street art festivals and events taking place in Belfast, meaning that there will always be new pieces to see, and that many of the pieces in this post will likely be replaced in time.
This website contains a fairly up to date map of the street art in Belfast, divided by type, which is a helpful resource.
If you want to get a better understanding of the art as well as the stories behind each piece, we can very much recommend that you take a street art tour.
The two tours that we can recommend are the street art walking tour with Seedhead arts , and the Black Cab Mural tour with Touring Around Belfast .
Both these tours are run by Belfast locals, but they have somewhat different foci.
The street art walking tour with Seedhead arts focuses on the recent, more contemporary street art, and shares information on some of the art works, as well as the artists behind the pieces. The tour is given by actual street artists, and is a great insight into the current street art scene.
The Black Cab Mural tour, led by blue badge guide Billy Scott, is both a tour of the city itself, and also an insight into Belfast’s troubled recent history, known as the The Troubles, part of which is shared through the political murals painted in parts of Belfast. These murals, which represent various political viewpoints, religious beliefs, events, and figures, show a different side of the city.
We’d argue that both tours are worth going on, although of course it’s up to you. The walking tour is currently a weekly event, held at midday on a Saturday, although other times can be arranged subject to availability.
The Black Cab mural tours are run on demand, just get in touch with Billy via his website to set that up. If Billy isn’t available (he’s a very popular tour guide), you might check out this tour instead.

street art in belfast is fascinating and I would like to know, whether some of these artists also create small works of art to be bought for my home, on wood/metal/etc.? I am very interested and if there are smaller pieces available, I would visit and discuss directly, plus enjoy the belfast tour. Can you assist me? Thank you very much Rudolf from Switzerland

Ten pieces of Belfast street art you don’t want to miss
If you’re visiting belfast, a tour of the local street art scene is a must-do activity. we sat down with adam turkington , owner of seedhead arts (the home of belfast’s best street art walking tour) and manager of the hit north street art festival , to discover the stories behind some of his favourite pieces of city centre street art..
The Duel of Belfast: Dance by Candlelight – Conor Harrington (2012)
Commissioned by the Cathedral Quarter Arts Festival and probably to this day the most significant and iconic piece of street art in Belfast, I vividly remember it being painted in the rain before seeing an amazing YACHT gig in the Black Box. The Duel of Belfast is the perfect metaphor for Belfast’s troubled past and irritating present. The scene is one of two men fighting over a carcass of a dead animal. So consumed are they with defeating each other in combat and claiming the worthless prize that they fail to see that the world is decaying around them. (The drips are not the result of the rain – it was painted in but absolutely part of the design).
The Son of Protagoras – MTO (2014)
Another mural that comments on the NI conflict is this piece from the 2014 Hit the North Festival. Protagoras is commonly believed to be the first recorded agnostic; he wrote in 84BC ‘As to the Gods, I have no means of knowing either that they exist or that they do not exist, or if they do.” MTO was surprised on his arrival in Belfast to learn that we build walls to separate our communities and educate our children separately, and this piece is a direct response to seeing religion as the cause of our problems. The boy finds the stricken dove, killed by the twin arrows of religion and looks angrily at Belfast Cathedral which is just over the road. This piece is a particular favourite of mine not least because my son is the model.
Still Waters – The Nomad Clan (2017)
Like all Nomad Clan work Still Waters is very much a story of the city in which it sits. It contains a nod to Belfast’s ship-building heritage, its linen and its rope industry. As well as the wolf being on Belfast’s shield, wolves were once an integral part of the Irish countryside and culture. The stance between the wolf & modern young woman is a subtle reference to the tensions during the troubles, a retrospective look & acknowledgement of past and present. Her proud heritage is reflected in a neck tattoo. Often Nomad Clan use androgynous characters in their murals, but in Belfast it was a deliberate choice to represent a queer female in a place that’s banned gay marriage and struggles with women’s rights.
Untitled – Alice Pasqunini (2018)
This beautiful portrait of an acrobat is of particular significance to me because Alice chose to paint it at the festival following the loss of the Director of Belfast Circus School, Will Chamberlain, to cancer. Will was an inspirational voice for the arts community in Belfast, and his loss was particularly felt in the circus community, where he had been a figurehead for twenty years. Will had a great love for street art and, like us, saw it as very much connected with street theatre. In 2019 we changed the dates of Hit the North to fall on the same weekend at the festival that Will established, the Festival of Fools. Also, the new director of the Circus School is an amazing acrobat called Jenna, and when she got off the bus from the airport to relocate to Belfast this mural was the first thing she saw, and so the significance of this mural grew in our minds again.
The Chef – Smug (2016)
One of my favourite things about street art is that because it’s such a new art form, the standards are changing at such a rapid rate. Smug is without a doubt one of the most talented graffiti artists in the world at the minute – he’s kind of world famous for his facial hair. When I take the tour I make sure people see up close the technique, the blending, the can control – it’s quite incredible and Belfast is privileged to have such an amazing piece of work.
The Golden Hares of Rathlin Island – Annatomix (2018)
Former sound engineer Annatomix has become particularly well known for her large scale murals, distinctive polygonal animals and geometric patterns. The Irish hare is one of Europe’s rarest animals and the only species of lagomorph native to Ireland. They’re believed to have existed there since before the last ice age but their numbers are now in steady decline – initially due to a change in farming methods but more recently, due to hunting. Some of the historically largest colonies of these hares are in Northern Ireland. The group at Aldergrove near Belfast is in decline but in contrast, the strongest group thrives on Rathlin Island, off the north coast of Ulster. It’s also home to a distinct genetic variation, exclusive to the island colony – the Rathlin ‘golden hare’.
Untitled – Aches (2017)
Aches has quietly been making the most innovative and exciting street art in Ireland over the last few years. His work uses the intersection between technology and analogue street art to create pieces that look amazing on both screen and street, often in completely different ways. And no, it’s not photoshop.
Forzan (Force) – Sancho MDN (2018)
Sancho is a young and supremely talented street artist from Cali in Colombia. Thanks to some investment from the British Council, Hit the North was able to organise an exchange with Graficalia Street Art Festival in Cali. Myself, Friz and Emic were able to visit that amazing city, and Sancho and his friend Visual (whose work can be seen just around the corner from this) were able to come to Belfast for Hit the North. As well as boasting the sort of colour palette only someone from South America would have the audacity to use, Sancho’s work is drawn from mankind’s relationship with nature. His work on the bird in this piece is unbelievable.
Night Forrest – Hicks 54 (2013)
A piece from our very first festival that has stood the test of time and remains one of the best-loved pieces of street art in the city. It has no deep meaning or fascinating story, but transforms this small corner on Royal Avenue into something beautiful. Essentially it does the thing that makes me love street art – it cheers me up when I see it.
The Belfast Romantics – Leo Boyd (2019)
Commissioned by Bullitt and DC Tours this mural by Leo Boyd is everything you want from a Leo Boyd piece. I’ve kind of been a bit of a Leo Boyd fanboy since I first came across his print of Godzilla trashing Belfast many years ago. His fascination with pop art, B movies and Belfast architecture all approached with Leo’s very particular brand of humour. What I love about Leo’s work is how he shines a light on the absurdities of Belfast as someone who wasn’t raised here but has chosen to live here. Leo’s Belfast is a fucked up playground, with overblown monsters with lasers coming out of their eyes and wind up riot vans. What is this mad, dangerous, day-go, car crash of a city? It’s the Belfast that we love.

The History of Street Art in Belfast
The History of Street Art in Belfast – Belfast’s street art scene is an expression of the city’s turbulent past and vibrant present. Understanding the history behind this art form, particularly its political roots, is crucial to appreciating its significance. At the heart of Belfast’s history is The Troubles, a period of sectarian violence that plagued the city for over three decades. The political murals that line the streets are a reflection of the conflict and its impact on the city’s communities. These murals were used as a form of expression for both Irish Republicans and Loyalists, with symbols such as weapons, flags, and martyrs commonly found in their artwork.
In the 2000s, there was a shift away from political murals in Belfast’s street art scene. Today, themes explored in modern street art include culture, identity, and community. The range of styles and messages represented in the city’s murals today is diverse and eclectic, reflecting the city’s cosmopolitanism. These murals are not only works of art but also serve as a means of communication for the people of Belfast.
Walking tours are a popular way to explore Belfast’s street art scene. These tours provide visitors with an opportunity to see the must-see murals, including notable artists and their work. The impact of street art on the city’s tourism industry cannot be overstated, as it has become a major attraction for visitors.
The power of street art to reflect a city’s history and culture is undeniable. Belfast’s street art scene is a testament to this fact. As visitors, we can gain a deeper understanding of the city’s past and present by exploring its street art scene. By doing so, we can appreciate the art form and its cultural significance, as well as gain insight into the city’s complex history.
In conclusion, Belfast’s street art scene is an essential part of the city’s identity. It reflects the city’s turbulent history and vibrant present, and serves as a means of communication for its people. Visitors are encouraged to explore Belfast’s street art scene as a way to gain a deeper understanding of the city’s past and present, and appreciate the beauty and cultural significance of this unique art form.

Belfast's Linen Quarter summer walking tour launches at health week
N early 80 free events will take place across the district to inspire and support improved health and well-being. Developed in partnership with Creative Tours Belfast, Spinning Yarns Walking Tour will dive into the history of the Linen Quarter weaving together stories of its people and bringing to life a legacy spanning over 250 years.
Kicking off on June 10, new additions this year include sound healing, Bollyfit dancing, a group run, and new cycling exhibition Gears and Beers taking place at The Ewart which will highlight the transformation of the modern bicycle and showcase the latest in cycling technology.
Health Week will also see employees across the Linen Quarter receive access to almost 50 classes at Pure Gym on Adelaide Street as well as the return of yoga classes, dog petting and personal health checks.
In a move to enhance emergency preparedness within the district, the BID is also encouraging its members to invest in life-saving equipment, covering up to 50 per cent of costs for Automated External Defibrillators (AEDs). The devices can deliver crucial shocks to restore normal heart rhythms during sudden cardiac arrest significantly increasing the chances of survival.
Lawrence Geoffrey Tingson, Linen Quarter BID Healthy and Sustainable Manager said: “Health Week is a crucially important initiative for the BID. Not only does it serve as reminder for us to prioritise our health and wellbeing, but it highlights the role of employers in ensuring their employees are both happy and healthy - which should be a priority for all businesses as a happy workforce is a productive one.
“This year we’re delighted to partner with Creative Tours Belfast to launch our summer Walking Tour which will share the fascinating journey from the heart of the linen industry in the 1800s to the vibrant and distinct district it is today.”
The first Spinning Yarns Walking Tour will take place on June 13 and will run for 10weeks on a trial basis. A limited number of free tickets for each tour will be available to employees of Linen Quarter-based organisations.
Dolores Vischer, founder of Creative Tours Belfast said, "We’ve designed the ‘Spinning Yarns’ Walking Tour in a way that helps people learn about the area's rich heritage, including the importance of the linen industry and how it earned us the title of ‘Linenopolis’ - as well as seeing how vibrant it is today. Along the way people can expect many entertaining ‘yarns’. They will discover where the largest bell in the city rang out from and why it was silenced for a time, visit historic venues such as the Grand Opera House where Luciano Pavarotti made his UK debut in 1963, and the Ulster Hall were Led Zeppelin first played 'Stairway to Heaven' live in 1971. As well as taking in the area’s impressive architecture and historic bars, they will see super street art and fantastic eateries.”
LQ BID is dedicated to sustaining the Linen Quarter’s health and wellbeing with the installation of outdoor parklets and planting, advocacy for active and sustainable travel, and a pioneering new project to monitor and improve air quality throughout the district.
To celebrate Health Week the BID has also partnered with Belfast based clinic ACCA to offer advanced technology and wellness treatments such as Cryotherapy, Oxygen Therapy, and IV Nutrient shots with £25 vouchers available to its members.
All sessions are free to attend, but space is limited. To secure a spot at any of the events visit linenquarter.org/event/linen-quarter-health-week/
