Star Trek's New Warp Drive Breaks the Prime Directive in a Way No-One Expected
Star trek isn’t supposed to have money: what is latinum, i don't care if modern star trek breaks established canon.
All six installments in the series Star Trek: Short Treks will be available to stream for free. The collection of original short stories is a part of CBS All Access' Star Trek universe . Short Treks first premiered in 2018, and served to further delve into Star Trek: Discovery 's characters, lore, and themes. The anthology web series was created by Alex Kurtzman and Bryan Fuller. The show consists of live-action shorts, as well as animated ones. While the show supplements the currently ongoing, primary Star Trek shows, they aren't necessary for understanding the main plot lines. Short Treks features characters and references from both the newer shows, as well as the older ones.
CBS All Access announced all six shorts in the latest iteration of Short Treks will be available to stream for free until August 31. The release of these six shorts is part of the campaign showing support for the shorts' Outstanding Short Form Comedy or Drama Series Emmy nomination. Each short is around 10 to 15 minutes long, and are standalone stories. They are available for streaming on CBS.com, the CBS mobile app, and YouTube.

Alex Kurtzman, Olatunde Osunsanmi, Frank Siracusa, Heather Kadin, Akiva Goldsman, John Weber, Rod Roddenberry, and Trevor Roth all serve as executive producers. The series is produced by CBS Television Studios, in association with Roddenberry Entertainment and Secret Hideout.
As previously stated, Star Trek: Short Treks will only be available for free until August 31, so this is the perfect time for any Star Trek fans who haven't watched them yet to catch up on the stories. This is an exciting time for Star Trek fans, with simultaneously running series like Star Trek: Picard and Discovery , along with the newly released Star Trek: Lower Decks .

3 essential Short Treks episodes that set up Star Trek: Strange New Worlds
If you haven't watched the anthology series yet, consider these episodes mandatory.
Ahead of the debut of Lower Decks , the Star Trek franchise has been quietly putting out smaller-stakes short-form stories since 2018. Set in the Discovery , TOS , and Picard timelines, the anthology series Short Treks provide essential backstory and tell smaller tales that otherwise wouldn't make the cut of a 13-episode season arc.
The second season of Short Treks is streaming free for a limited time on YouTube. It includes "Children of Mars," "Ask Not," The Trouble With Edward," "Q&A," plus the animated shorts "The Girl Who Made the Stars," and "Ephraim and Dot." Three of these episodes initially seemed like were standalone spin-offs to Discovery Season 2, but now that Strange New Worlds is coming, they have a whole new meaning. Strange New Worlds is still at least year away, but here's why three episodes of Short Treks — " Ask Not," The Trouble With Edward," and "Q&A" set up the highly anticipated spinoff.
3. "Ask Not" sets up at least one possible new Enterprise crewmember — "Ask Not" puts a new spin on an old Star Trek trope: A Starfleet cadet undergoing a test that they don't realize is a test. In this episode, a space-station bound would-be-officer named Cadet Sidhu (Amrit Kaur) is tasked with keeping Captain Pike under guard after he's supposedly been accused of mutiny. In the end, Sidhu learns that the whole thing was an elaborate test to see if she had what it takes to be stationed to the Enterprise . The episode ends with Sidhu being given a tour of the ship by Pike, Spock and Number One. We also get a glimpse of the ship's engine room in this timeline.
Now, we get the sense that "Ask Not" takes place sometime after "Q&A," (because Spock's there) but beyond that, it's not exactly clear if this is pre- Discovery Season 2, or post- Discovery Season 2. But, relative to Cadet Sidhu showing up in Strange New Worlds it kind of doesn't matter. If she was stationed to the Enterprise at any point, the chance that we'll see her as a regular member of the crew in Strange New Worlds is super-high. Not to mention, fans on Twitter and elsewhere have been petitioning to make sure Sidhu will appear on the show since it was announced.
2. "The Trouble With Edward" establishes Spock's predecessor — Although "The Trouble With Edward" is mostly a comedic prequel to "The Trouble With Tribbles" (spoiler alert: the Tribbles are kind of invented here) the framing of the episode also exists in a timeframe in which the Enterprise is switching out science officers. Based on Pike's Captain's log at the start of this episode, Captain Lynne Lucero (Rosa Salazar) has recently been promoted after having been a science officer on the Enterprise for a long time. Now, the exact time of "The Trouble With Edward" isn't totally clear, and it could happen pretty much anytime in the 2250s or even the early 2260s. So, at this point, we don't know if Lucero was the primary science officer on the Enterprise prior to Spock, or whether they served together as science officer colleagues. Conventional wisdom would tell us that Lucero leaving meant that Spock took her place as the new science officer, and that this episode takes place nearly concurrently with "Q&A."
But, that's not totally for sure. In TOS , the Enterprise had more than one science officer, and Chekov even worked under Spock as a junior science officer. If "The Trouble With Edward" happens in the early 2260s, that means Lynne Lucero could easily be in Strange New Worlds , and she could still be rocking a blue uniform, and working with Spock in the science department. And, if she's not on the Enterprise in the new series, she could still return as the Captain of the USS Cabot , who perhaps, comes to help out her old shipmates every once and while.
1. "Q&A" is a low-key pilot for Strange New Worlds — Part of the reason CBS is streaming these Short Treks for free is that the series Short Treks has been nominated for an Emmy in the category of Outstanding Short Form Comedy or Drama Series. And part of that nomination probably has to do with the stand-out episode, "Q&A." Written by Picard Season 1 showrunner and longtime TOS fan, Michael Chabon, "Q&A," tells the story of Spock's very first day on the USS Enterprise in the year 2254. Canonically, this makes "Q&A," the earliest filmed story set in TOS canon, since it predates both "The Cage," and Season 1 of Discovery .
The story sees Spock (Ethan Peck) figuring out how to keep his cool, and why he learned some of his self-control from his friend and mentor, Number One (Rebecca Romijn.) Last year, at the time "Q&A" aired, Michael Chabon told me that when he pitched "Q&A," he also pitched a story about Number One's last day on the Enterprise , the details of which have not been revealed.
"Q&A" will get you excited for Strange New Worlds . The characters are layered and likable, and the performances from Peck and Romijn are phenomenal. "Q&A" also packs in several Easter eggs and references to the entire canon of Trek, which is quite a feat when you consider the episode is only 14-minutes long. If "Q&A" is any indication of how Spock, Pike and Number One will behave in Strange New Worlds , then that spin-off series has a very, very bright future.
Short Treks Season 2 is free on YouTube until August 31.

Region locked, why did I even try
Yeah, those bastards! As Spock once said: go to hell!
Not available in the UK, of course.
That’s a shame. Not available in the UK or Germany or the rest of the European Union and other countries, of course.
I guess we are not allowed to vote for the Emmys either. But right, this sounded like it may be the chance to finally see them…
Nobody but Academy members get to vote for the Emmys.
CBS is stuck in 20 years ago as far as that is concerned.
“Children of Mars” is the best one.
Locked again… What is the point anymore?
Cue the complaints about region locking because people don’t understand how distribution rights work.
No, I dont. Please explain me why the cant give the licences outside US to show the short treks the same day as in US. And if they cant sell the licences, please explain me, why we cant watch it for free.
Think you misunderstand Jeff. We not complaining about distribution rights, we complaining that everyone else outside N.America is simply forgotten about. Putting aside Lower Decks due to the pandemic, the short treks could have been distributed long before now. Like Wehmut says, why can’t we watch these for free? Is it because we need to buy them on dvd here at close to £20? The fan base exploded at paying less than that for subscription for an entire season, yet we pay more than double to buy short treks on dvd. How about standing up with us and supporting us, your fellow trek enthusiasts round the world, instead of your “I’m alright Jack” approach
Phil, it really seems that CBS is stuck in the problem that Netflix isn’t really a fit as a platform for their shows.
Netflix treated Season 1 as trailers and didn’t buy season 2.
I do wonder why CBS isn’t or cannot just sell views of the Shorts on YouTube for a pound or per episode.
I had to do this for another US series that wasn’t available in Canada on streaming.
It makes me wonder if there is some kind of condition in the contract with Netflix that prevents them from selling directly to consumers if there is any Discovery-related content even if Netflix won’t distribute them itself.
That’s not why the complain dum dum.
Because Crave (in Canada) and Netflix (outside North America) have separate deals with the various shows, having CBS All Access make the Short Treks available for free to anyone would be stepping on the rights that Crave and Netflix have for the paid viewing of those shows. It’s really not any more complicated than that. For CBS to make them free for everyone, they would probably need to pay a fee to Crave and Netflix to cover any incured costs for doing that, and they probably don’t want to do that.
again, we understand all that – what we’re complaining about is that netflix has done a shitty job with it, mishandling short treks S1 and seemingly not bothering with S2. additionally, with discovery they had announced a deal for star trek in general, but then Picard came on prime, not netflix. netflix didn’t even make a different show in the database for short treks, just shoved them under discovery. they showed the talk show for discovery S1 but didn’t bother, again, with S2. no one has made wil Wheaton’s show (ready room?) available in europe. and so on.
it’s not about “CBS sold the rights outside the USA”, nor is it about people misunderstanding that CBS doesn’t have the distribution rights outside the USA.
it’s that the talks are botched, and seemingly having troubles. netflix didn’t just get all new trek automatically as part of their discovery deal, even though they announced it like they would back then. they don’t have short treks S2. they don’t have lower decks.
at least the Canadian situation is through one provider and they actually show everything. but the European situation is a shambles, with many thinking Amazon buying up Picard’s rights has upset netflix, with netflix potentially “taking it out on us” by not going along with new distribution yet obviously they still have the rights as well. they’re the ones preventing short treks and lower decks from streaming in europe, not CBS.
I’m sure CBS would love people in Europe to be watching lower decks right now, I’m sure they would’ve loved for us to have seen the short treks before picard premiered. I’m sure they would’ve loved for us to have seen the first season of Short Treks when it premiered in the USA, instead of hastily added under “trailers and more” a few weeks before discovery S2.
so, no, it’s not about misunderstanding how distribution rights work internationally. we understand that just fine. we just don’t like the current situation we’ve ended up in, with fragmented distribution rights and seemingly stalled talks.
You can watch Wil Wheaton’s Ready Room show completely for free on startrek.com. The Ready Room show during season 2 of Discovery was available on Facebook (and you don’t need to have a Facebook account to watch it). I vaguely remember reading that Netflix had some kind of first-look deal for any additional show directly related to Discovery, but not for all new Star Trek. That’s why CBS was able to sell Picard to Amazon Prime. Most likely, they are also free to sell Lower Decks to whomever is interested since it’s not related to Discovery. On the other hand, if that deal with Netflix still stands and if Netflix is still interested Strange New Worlds is likely to end up on Netflix since it is a direct spinoff of Discovery. One probable scenario is that Netflix will release season 2 of Short Treks (but probably not Children of Mars) right before the debut of Discovery season 3. Basically what they did with the first batch of Short Treks.
My first time seeing “Ephraim and Dot.” That was wonderful. Made my day.
Meanwhile, screw the majority of the world eh?
The majority of media providers are stuck in the past with an archaic broadcast licensing system.
Welcome to the Flat Earth Web.
Where can one find Season 1 of the Short Treks?
“The Trouble with Edward” is it is f-crap.
I’m pretty sure to get Emmy nods you have to not be producing a dreary unwatchable mess.

The "Take the Chair" campaign invites fans to see themselves in the iconic U.S.S. Enterprise captain's chair and ask themselves, "What would I do if I were setting the course to the future?" Fans will be able to engage through a digital experience available to fans worldwide on StarTrek.com .
