New ‘Star Trek: Discovery’-Inspired Jackets Introduced By Volante

The second season may be over, but  Star Trek Discovery fans have something else to look forward to as they wait for season three with the introduction of a new line of high quality jackets inspired by the show.

Volante goes Disco

Volante Design was founded by David and Willow Volante, who specialize in creating stylish streetwear inspired by sci-fi and gaming. According to Willow, the ethics and values of Trek have also inspired how they do business. They introduced their first licensed Star Trek products last year and this week they introduced a second line, inspired by Star Trek: Discovery .

Starfleet 2256 jackets by Volante

The Discovery -inspired Starfleet 2256 jackets are made of heavy denim with some stretch and feature an inner pocket and a snap tab collar that can be worn open or closed. They are available in men’s and women’s cuts, with the choice of four accent colors (Command Gold, Science Silver, Operations Copper, and Section 31 Black).

The Starfleet 2256 jackets are available in a number of sizes with men’s ranging from chest size 37-55 and women’s ranging from 33-47.  They also offer free sizing consultation, with a response typically within 24 hours. If you use their sizing consultation service and you’re unhappy with the fit upon receipt they will assist you in exchanging it free of charge. Willow shared that their passion is, “Getting people into things that make them feel, wow! A cut that really flatters them in the fandom they love.”

Willow shared that their guiding principles include pricing that works for their customers, and items that are high quality and made in the United States. The Volantes are involved in the process from prototype to finished product and they’re also very receptive to suggestions from their consumers. For example, a customer suggested that adding an inner pocket to their jackets could make it easier to wear the Starfleet badge without it falling off. The Volantes quickly incorporated that into their design.

Wow! Each one is over three hundred dollars and they look terrible. This isn’t apparel, this is an intelligence test.

I’ll agree the price is way too high for my pocket book, but these look awesome. If I had the disposable income I’d have ordered that Section 31 one by now.

I’m not a fan of the Discovery uniforms to begin with so this isn’t my cup of tea. But I think it’s great for fans that like them and want to show off their love for Trek.

In that close-up image, the fabric texture very much reminds me of working clothes we used to get back in the 1980s. Even the color is pretty much the same, contrast stitching included.

Back when I was about 19 I bought this vile black suede coat with long fringe along the sleeves. Every time I wore it out, people on the street were so utterly enraged at it that they wanted to beat me up. (Looking back, they weren’t wrong…) I get the same queasy feeling looking at these coats.

If it were cheaper I’d be all over this, same for my wife.

The Section 31 jacket looks pretty cool. And the guy with the beard looks almost exactly like me, just with a neater beard.

There are websites where you can customise clothing, I’ve had my own Disco jacket made with a starfleet insignia for around $60.

They charge way too much for these. I understand that quality clothing actually does cost some money, but over 330 for a jacket? Yeah. No thanks.

With their Starfleet 2364 jacket, Volante Design brought a streetwear sensibility to classic Star Trek style. They expertly adapted the classic and colorful Star Trek: The Next Generation uniform into a fashionable, moto-style jacket. Now they’re back with a homage to the uniforms of Star Trek: Discovery with their latest release, Starfleet 2256. Lead designer and president David Volante speaks more about Starfleet 2256 and how he was able to "make it sew."

Tell us about Volante Design. Why did you want to work with Star Trek ?

Volante Design is a small fashion design company that I started almost by accident. I had been creating custom pieces based off of video games, anime, comic books, and other fandoms that inspired me and I found aesthetically pleasing. There’s not a ton of unique, nerdy clothing options for men — lots of hoodies and t-shirts — and I wanted to dress like I belonged in a video game or comic book. My work got popular on Tumblr and the company snowballed from there. The goal of Volante Design is to make you feel extraordinary, like the protagonist of your own adventure. It’s not cosplay; it’s about owning that power and feeling like your best self in your daily life. We say we make streetwear for superhumans. Wearability and durability is very important to us, along with that special... something that makes you feel great when you put on a coat or a vest.

Star Trek wasn’t afraid to feature a ground-breaking interracial kiss, or to reignite the franchise with a main character who isn’t in the Command division. Star Trek makes you want to be your best self, and that’s what I aim for Volante Design’s clothing to do as well.

How did you start your design process for Starfleet 2256?

Once we knew we were going to design jackets based off of Star Trek: Discovery , I re-watched episodes to take closer note of the details. I make sketches for some designs but not every one — it really depends on how clear my vision is to start — and for Discovery , I didn’t find the need to sketch. The uniforms already look like jackets and have very clear silhouettes, so it was easy for me to think ahead about the construction process. The challenge then was to pinpoint the elements that are unique to the uniforms on Discovery and translate them to a form that is suitable for daily wear.

Volante Wearable

What do you mean by that?

Well, the Discovery uniforms look great on screen. The metallic details translate perfectly for the medium and the setting, but I think they’re too bold for everyday life and not in line with the streetwear twist we like to offer. Volante Design is about interpreting items from various fandoms to be more fashion than costume; direct replicas are not wear we thrive. High-contrast topstitching is a signature of my design style and was a perfect fit for the Starfleet 2256 jacket, but we took that one step further with this design and matched the zippers to the thread which really makes that element pop.

Intricate pattern work is another pillar of our design style, so in place of the embroidered shoulder bars, we cut those bars as individual pieces and topstitched them. This has the added benefit of giving a natural structure to the shoulder silhouette as well as adding a bit of depth to the jacket, grounding it as a piece of clothing.

Aside from this design and your last Star Trek jacket, how has Star Trek influenced your design style?

I’d say that I have the same love of clean lines. Throughout the years, the Starfleet uniforms always look really sleek and often feature angular details or cuts. I want my designs to be functional and have that surprise factor, something different and cool you don’t notice at first. For example, Starfleet 2256 has a snap tab on the asymmetrical collar that folds back around when you wear the collar open. That way there’s no dangling closure tab when the collar is open, and it doesn’t ruin the clean lines of the collar.

Star Trek actually helped shape how we run Volante Design. As a small independent business, it’s important to us that we take care of our small team and to try and function with integrity. Willow Volante, our CEO, grew up watching The Next Generation and definitely felt inspired by Captain Picard as she navigated running and growing our fledgling company. We have a great team and a fantastic group of fans, and we’re always looking to do our best and listen to the needs of the many. Some of the best ideas can come that way. We added the inner badge pocket to Starfleet 2256 based on a customer suggestion after he purchased our TNG design, Starfleet 2364.

Most important question: What Discovery character do you feel the most affinity with?

I love most of the characters in the series, but I think the one who has had the strongest impact for me is Lt. Stamets. His passion for his work put him in a position to be the only one to truly understand its impact, and while he is careful to consider of the safety of others he always ends up putting himself on the line for the sake of progress.

Each time, they get more and more accurate in details and designs…If you have a film jacket that you’d like, they’ll NAIL it…This one, the Picard leather jacket used in season 3 took a LOT of work, and back and forth arguing on the RPF as well to really get closer to the look, but the team here listened and absorbed ALL the details and really hit the final design and colours for this jacket…It’s perfect. Fit wise, as always the team listen to you and will fit you spot on…100% I’d recommend them to anyone in need of a jacket….Brilliant.

I’ve ordered cosplay outfits for nearly 20 years from many different companies, and I must say the Command style version of this Picard season 3 jacket is by *far* the best uniform I’ve ever gotten. The accuracy and respect to detail is remarkable. At the same time, the quality of the fabric and manufacture are equal to that of any jacket I’d expect to buy in a major department store. It is the perfect combination of an every day wearable jacket with a screen accurate Star Trek uniform design.. And if all that wasn’t enough, during the manufacture Excellent Leather’s customer support was top notch, emailing me on a weekly basis with updates on the process as well as additional questions that insured my jacket was rendered to personalized tailor made precision. Worth every penny!

I received mine today and I’m pleasantly surprised! It’s always a bit of a risk ordering an attire that’s tailored to your measurements over the internet, since you don’t have the professional tailor on location taking them. But Jameel put in a lot of effort deriving the most screen-accurate version you could find anywhere. The fit is a dozen times better than the cheap, officially-licensed jacket – as is the material and build quality. When I unpacked the jacket, I could see immediately that a professional and experienced tailor was at work. Those who followed in twitter could even see the prototyping progress with a lot of effort to getting little details such as the perforation patterns super screen-accurate. And even Picard’s production designer provided him with the color used in the production. So you won’t end up with oversaturated division colors like in many cosplay stores that can easily make a garment look like a cheap halloween costume.

This one is high-quality and absolutely suitable for use as a normal jacket. People who are not Trekkies wouldn’t even notice it’s a cosplay, but just a futuristic-looking leather jacket.

The lining is a bit too warm if you plan to use it at cons (prepare to sweat), but that comes at the benefit of being useful as an actual outdoor jacket that’ll keep you warm. The only slight criticism I would have is that I think the sleeves could be mounted a bit more in a suit style to have more elegant shoulders. But that’s criticism on an already very high level.

This was my first time ordering a custom jacket from anyone but when I saw what the team was working on and the attention to detail, I knew this was the replica I was looking for.

This was also the first time I’ve been measured by a tailor for anything which was a little nerve racking considering that if the measurements were wrong, there was no going back.

But I’m happy to report all is good and I like the fit. The command color was exactly what I expected based on the updates I saw and the fact the color information was obtained from someone involved in the television production.

As others have said, it’s probably warm for just standing around at a convention but I bought this with the intention of wearing this has a functional jacket. And that’s exactly what I got.

Thank you to everyone who was responsible for putting this together. I doubt there is another one out there as accurate as this one appears to be. I’ll be wearing it proudly in my travels.

I cannot begin to tell you that holding this jacket, I feel like I have an actual Star Trek prop in my hands.. This is probably better tbh.. the detail, the design.. the breathable fabrics. The leather is so supple and comfortable. JUST ABSOLUTELY AMAZING! I dare you to find a custom leather jacket at this price. Let alone a Star Trek one! Absolutely STUNNING!!! The only thing I wish this had, was a removable zippered winter lining, because the recipient of this gift is just in love with it! However, that’s a big ask! GET THIS JACKET!!!

Welcome to the new Geek Chic column! I’m on a mission to prove that an appreciation of fashion and a love of all things geeky need not be mutually exclusive passions. This column seeks to draw sartorial inspiration from the science fiction, fantasy, and comic book genres : while we may not be able to live out the adventures of time travelers, superheroes, hobbits, or space pioneers, we can certainly take some fashion cues from them!

For my first post, I’m going to focus on the ultimate icon of geekdom: Star Trek. While I love the campiness of the original 1960s TV series, there’s no denying the major style and hotness factor of the 2009 reboot, starring Chris Pine, Zachary Quinto, and Zoe Saldana.

Know Your Geek: About Star Trek

• Star Trek was created in the 1960s by Gene Roddenberry, who had a vision of a 23rd-century Earth free of war and inequality. The show was particularly groundbreaking at the time because of its racially diverse cast and how it addressed issues such as racism, feminism, imperialism, technology, and human rights. The original series was canceled after three seasons, but became immensely popular in syndication, spawning several spin-off shows and ten movies.
• In 2009, Paramount released Star Trek: XI, which utilized the characters from the original series but involved the creation of an alternate reality. The movie explores the birth of the Enterprise crew as they band together to fight an enemy threatening to destroy Earth. (Plus, there are breathtaking special effects, sexy green girls, and perhaps the best-looking ensemble cast ever .)

Can I just mention what a great role model Communications officer Nyota Uhura is? She is incredibly intelligent, fiercely independent, and never backs down even though she’s one of the few female officers on the bridge. (Plus, nobody rocks a tiny mini quite like Lieutenant Uhura!)

This flippy red dress is quite similar to Uhura’s: Dress it up for a night out with a sparkly jacket and futuristic studded ankle boots. Zoe Saldana wore Alexis Bittar earrings in the film, but these drop earrings are just as cute at a fraction of the price. Finish the look by sweeping your hair into a sleek, high ponytail and applying winged eyeliner.

Kirk, a rebel without a cause, feels his life is going nowhere until he joins Starfleet Academy. He spends most of the film in his cadet uniform, a simple gray and black outfit, though before he’s recruited he wears a tough leather jacket and jeans.

Capture Kirk’s defiant and confident nature with a too-cool-for-school jacket and moto boots. For a pop of color, add a trendy mustard scarf to represent the gold shirt he eventually wears as a captain. Now go strut your stuff and show the world that you don’t believe in the no-win scenario!

Spock, a Vulcan-human hybrid, wears blue to identify himself as a science officer; he’s also a Starfleet instructor and perhaps the most iconic Trek character of all.

The ever-logical Vulcan would surely approve of this polished ensemble: A crisp blazer, sensible flats, and a pragmatic bookbag make it perfect for meeting with an adviser or a professor, while the skinny jeans and sheer collared shirt (wear a cami underneath!) prevent it from being stodgy. Without a ship, Kirk and company wouldn’t even be able to leave Earth, much less explore space, the final frontier. In the 2009 reboot, the Starship Enterprise got a slick makeover that garnered a lot of comparisons to the streamlined elegance of Apple stores.

Channel the legendary spacecraft by pairing an embellished white dress (reminiscent of the Enterprise’s hull) with a metallic belt that’s the same shade of blue as the engine nacelles. How about a Big Bang Theory post! 🙂 The characters, especially Sheldon, wear iconic Green Lantern, Batman, Flash, etc shirts that are easily found online.

Cannot WAIT for the Doctor Who post! I agree with others, there may need to be multiple parts given the number of doctors and companions, most of whom have fantastic style! How about a post about the BBC show Merlin?

I adore this post! Keep it up!! I especially love the background information on Star Trek itself. I’ve never been a trekkie, but reading your description definitely gave me newly found respect for the series.
