As a service member you’re probably well-used to spending exorbitant amounts of money on flights. After all, will your parents ever forgive you if you don’t use your leave for a flight home during Christmas?

While you can’t control holiday pricing, you are entitled to some benefits as a member of the military.

You’ve hopefully heard about the free TSA PreCheck you’ll get with a DoD ID card . And you may have also known about airport lounge access if you’re in uniform. While those are nice perks (seriously, skipping the security line can save you a lot of time), they don’t do much to lower the cost of the flight itself, especially when your dates are inflexible. Along with pricey tickets, you may also find yourself faced with hefty baggage fees and charges for flying with your pets.

Fortunately, plenty of airlines and online travel agencies will offer discounts to members of the military — and even veterans — so do yourself a favor and take advantage of these the next time you head home. Even better, consider using a rewards card to maximize your points when booking travel as well as many other perks. We’ve covered this extensively in our post on the best military credit cards for active-duty members. You can also read our review of the American Express military benefits included with the Amex Platinum card to discover more travel rewards.

Military Family on Disney Cruise

The military discounts you’re entitled to differ whether you’re active duty, in the reserves, or a veteran. Most airlines will offer a discount to active-duty personnel simply by calling, but veterans will have a harder time of it — in many cases, you’ll need to sign up for Veteran’s Advantage to receive flight discounts. We’ll take a look at the discounts each airline offers and how to take advantage of these perks, but first, let’s talk about Veteran’s Advantage.

Hot Tip: Our comprehensive Military & Veterans Travel Guide helps you get recognition for your service via discounts for airlines, hotels , rental car companies, cruises, theme parks, and more!

If you miss flashing your CAC everywhere you go in order to score those sweet military discounts, you may want to consider signing up for Veteran’s Advantage and its VetRewards program . It’s not free, though the cost varies according to which plan you pick:

In addition to its plethora of shopping and lifestyle discounts, VetRewards also offers discounts on tons of different airlines and hotels . Even better, VetRewards is available to more people than you’d think. If you’re active duty, a veteran, a retiree, or an immediate family member of a service member (active duty or veteran), you’re eligible for VetRewards. That’s huge!

Air Canada

Air Canada is, as you’d think, a Canadian airline. Because of its close proximity to the U.S., American service members still receive some perks .

Baggage Discounts

Air Canada allows members of both the U.S. and Canadian military to check 3 bags up to 70 pounds each for free. This applies to active-duty and retired service members alike and doesn’t change whether you’re traveling on orders or for leisure travel.

Air France A320 In The Air

Air France is a member of SkyTeam and operates flights around the world, including to the U.S., the Maldives, and more, which can make its perks highly valuable.

Air France’s baggage discount for military members varies based on your type of travel and cabin of service. If you’re on orders, you and your eligible family can check 5 bags up to 70 pounds each when traveling in economy. If you’re heading on vacation, you — and no one else — can still check 2 bags up to 50 pounds each free of charge.

Alaska Airlines

Alaska Airlines bag check agent

Alaska Airlines is a West Coast-based airline and part of the Oneworld alliance . It’s based in the Pacific Northwest and operates flights all throughout North America.

Airfare Discounts

Alaska offers special military fares to active-duty service members flying during leave, those who have been discharged from the armed forces within the last 7 days, and reservists who are currently activated and on active duty.

Dependents are also eligible to receive the discount; anyone 10 and up must have a dependent ID. Children 9 and under can travel without.

There is no specified discount amount, and the discount isn’t guaranteed on every flight. In order to get it, you’ll need to call Alaska to book your flight at 800-252-7522 .

Alaska also offers a 5% flight discount to members of Veteran’s Advantage.

Alaska allows active-duty service members and their dependents to check up to 5 bags each for free . Active-duty service members can take advantage of this whenever they’re flying, while dependents must have valid travel orders in hand in order to qualify. Your bags can weigh up to 70 pounds each, though if you end up checking more than 5, you’ll need to pay a $100 fee per bag.

In-Flight Discounts

In case you (or your 2-year-old) get hungry during the flight, Alaska offers a 15% discount on all food purchased during a flight when you show your valid military ID. This will stack nicely with the 20% rebate offered by the Alaska Airlines Visa Signature ® Credit Card , thereby making your airplane food (almost) affordable.

Lounge Discounts

If you’re active duty and traveling on orders, you can get into the Alaska Lounge  for free as long as you have your documentation with you.

Pet Discounts

If you’re getting stationed somewhere else, Alaska will give you a discount on shipping your pet via Alaska Air Cargo, though the discounted rate is not specified.

Allegiant Air

Allegiant plane

Allegiant is a low-cost airline that flies all throughout the U.S., including Hawaii. Known for charging additional fees for just about everything — including your carry-on — so military members will benefit by showing their ID cards when checking in. These discounts apply to active-duty and reserve service members as well as veterans .

Military members and their dependents traveling on the same reservation are eligible for a variety of baggage benefits, including 2 free checked bags up to 100 pounds, 1 carry-on item, and 1 personal item.

Excitingly, Allegiant will allow you to bring 1 pet in-cabin without charge.

Other Discounts

Military members and their eligible dependents will also be able to print their boarding passes at the airport for free. Active-duty and reserve members can also skip change or cancellation fees when altering a flight due to a change in orders.

American Airlines

American Airlines Admirals Club at Orlando MCO bar stools

American Airlines is one of the “Big 3” airlines in the U.S. and its route network reflects that by featuring flights that span the globe.

Flight Discounts

American Airlines offers discounts on flights to both active-duty military and government members (such as DoD civilians). You’ll have to call 800-433-7300 in order to receive the discount.

AA also offers a 10% discount to veterans and their families who are registered with VetRewards.

Baggage is free for active-duty service members and their families. If you’re traveling on orders, you can get 5 bags, up to 100 pounds each, checked for free. If you’re simply traveling for leave you can still get 3 bags, up to 50 pounds each, instead.

Active-duty service members traveling in uniform on an American Airlines flight get free access to Admirals Club , AA’s network of airport lounges. These lounges offer free food and drinks as well as a respite from busy terminals.

Breeze Airways

Breeze Airways plane

The newest airline in the U.S., Breeze Airways launched in May 2021 and covers a series of underserved airports across the U.S.

As an active-duty service member, you’ll receive either 2 free checked bags or 1 checked bag and 1 carry-on . You’ll need to show your ID to airline officials at the airport.

Delta Air Lines

Delta Airbus A220 First Class Row 3

Another of the “Big 3” airlines, Delta is a member of SkyTeam, which includes airlines such as Air France and China Eastern. Delta has decently generous policies when it comes to military folks.

Active-duty service members are eligible to receive discounts on airfare, though Delta’s website doesn’t specify the amount. Along with reduced prices on standard airfare, you’re also able to get discounts on Delta Vacations packages, which generally include hotels and airfare, but can also include rental cars. In order to book a flight or vacation package, you’ll need to call Delta Reservations at 800-221-1212.

Delta offers active-duty military members free checked luggage; benefits vary depending on your reason for travel. If on orders, you can take 5 bags, up to 100 pounds each. If it’s leisure travel, you’re entitled to 2 bags of up to 50 pounds each when in economy or 3 bags of up to 70 pounds each in first class. Delta doesn’t specify if your dependents are also entitled to free checked bags.

Service members and their spouses (as well as Active U.S State Department Foreign Service Officers) are allowed to bring their pets as checked baggage on Delta flights when transferring duty stations. While this may be a common benefit for other airlines, Delta only extends this perk to the above-mentioned groups — and no one else. This saves you from having to ship your beloved pet as cargo. Unfortunately, it’s not free; prices range from $150 to $200 depending on your destination.

Delta offers family members of those injured in war to book and fly on a discounted military medical emergency flight . You can either book these online or by calling Delta’s reservation line.

Hot Tip: No matter who you’re flying with, you can always head into a USO lounge for some free food and (non-alcoholic) drinks.

Frontier Airlines

Frontier Airlines is a low-cost carrier whose “unbundled” fares result in extremely cheap flights filled with all kinds of additional fees. Members of Frontier’s Discount Den can score reduced airfare, but Frontier doesn’t have any other published discounts on flights, including those for military members.

Frontier does offer waived baggage fees for those on active duty or in the reserves or National Guard. These include 1 free personal item, 1 free carry-on, and 2 free checked bags. These discounts are only valid for service members — not their companions.

JetBlue Airways

JetBlue Mint A321 bed made with suite door closed

JetBlue is a U.S. airline focused mainly on the East Coast, though it offers service throughout the U.S. and much of North America. It’s renowned for its Mint Suites that offer a lie-flat bed service on premium routes.

JetBlue offers all service members — past and present — a 5% discount on published airfares. If you’re on active duty, you and your immediate family can call 800-JETBLUE to book your ticket. Note that in order to be eligible for this discount you must not be traveling on orders.

Veterans enrolled in VetRewards from Veteran’s Advantage will also score a 5% discount . You’ll need to call the same number specified above. When calling, you simply identify yourself as a VetRewards member and give them your membership number in order to receive the discount.

JetBlue offers free checked bags for all service members, whether you’re on active duty or a veteran. When traveling on orders, active-duty military personnel and their dependents will receive 5 free checked bags. If traveling for leisure, you and your family will instead qualify for 2 free checked bags.

Veterans registered with VetRewards get 2 free checked bags, though JetBlue’s website doesn’t specify if this waiver includes immediate family members.

Lufthansa B747-8 First Class Seat 1A - Cherag Dubash

The 2nd European airline on the list, Lufthansa is a German airline and a member of Star Alliance . They’ve teamed up with Veteran’s Advantage to offer discounts to service members .

By using VetRewards, all military members (and their families) can get a 5% discount on Lufthansa flights, with some exceptions: your itinerary must originate in the U.S., you can have a maximum of 8 people on your reservation, and some web special fares may not be eligible for the discount.

Hawaiian Airlines

Hawaiian Airlines Flight Attendant

As is evident from the name, Hawaiian Airlines is a Hawaii-based airline that services the continental U.S. as well as major destinations in Asia and the South Pacific. Veteran’s Advantage strikes again here with discounts exclusive to its VetRewards program.

Those enrolled in VetRewards will receive a 5% discount on most Hawaiian Airlines flights (with some exceptions).

You’ll also receive a free Pau Hana Cafe meal and Koloa Rum drink during each flight . As a reminder, active-duty service members are also eligible to enroll with Veteran’s Advantage, so don’t think that this discount is exclusive to veterans.

Hawaiian offers a military baggage allowance . Active-duty service members and their dependents on official travel can check 5 bags each. If you’re traveling for pleasure, you’re still entitled to 2 free checked bags, though your family won’t qualify. Hawaiian Airlines does not offer complimentary checked baggage to veterans.

Spirit Airlines

spirit bag drop

Another low-cost carrier operating throughout North America, Spirit features extremely cheap airfare. As a result, they, unfortunately, don’t offer any flight discounts for either veterans or active-duty service members.

If you’re on active duty, Spirit’s military bag policy allows you to check 2 free bags and bring 1 free carry-on with you when traveling. It doesn’t matter whether you’re on orders or not. Unfortunately, family members don’t qualify for any additional benefits.

Excitingly, you can use ID.me online to verify your military status and claim your free checked bags before getting to the airport, which can save you some time in line.

Southwest Airlines

Southwest check in agent

Southwest is known for its generous flight policies, which include no change or cancellation fees and 2 free checked bags for every passenger. Its route network covers much of the U.S. and Central America, though it is always expanding.

While Southwest doesn’t publish its discounted rate for military members, you can call 800-435-9792 in order to receive special pricing.

Active-duty military passengers or those on permanent change of station orders are exempt from the 2-piece checked bag limit. So long as none of the bags weigh over 100 pounds or are more than 80 inches in size (L+W+H), they will not be subject to overweight, oversize, or excess bag fees.

United Airlines

United pet shipping

United is the last of the “Big 3” and is a member of Star Alliance. You’ll find it flying all over the world with its premium Polaris class featuring hot fudge sundaes and take-home pajamas.

In order to be eligible for discounts , you’ll need to — surprise — sign up for Veteran’s Advantage . You’ll then be able to receive a 5% discount on most flights. There are a few stipulations: flights must originate in the U.S. or Canada, flights must travel to the U.S., Canada, the Caribbean, Mexico, Central America, or over the Atlantic, reservations must be 8 people or fewer, and certain web special fares may not qualify. This discount is only valid on United-marketed and United- or Lufthansa-operated flights.

United is more generous than its peers when it comes to baggage benefits. Regardless of how you’re traveling, you and your dependents will receive free checked baggage that can weigh up to 70 pounds. If you’re on official orders, you can bring 5 pieces for free; if you’re traveling for fun it’ll be 3 free bags.

Your dependents will receive the same baggage allowance as you if you’re traveling on the same reservation. Otherwise, they’ll receive 2 free checked bags as long as they’re traveling on official orders.

United’s lounge policy is the most generous you’ll find . As a service member, you’ll be invited into its United Club lounges whether you’re in uniform or traveling on leave. You’ll just simply need to show your papers. United’s lounges offer both free drinks and food — if your family is traveling with you on the same reservation they’re allowed to enter for free as well.

Although United has currently suspended its PetSafe pet shipping program due to COVID-19, it does offer special discounts to military members traveling on official orders.

When its program resumes, you can expect to enjoy discounted handling as well as easy check-in to save you time at the airport. These benefits don’t apply to leisure travel.

So we’ve covered all the major airlines offering military discounts. These include every single U.S. airline (even if it’s just for baggage), as well as a single European airline. But if you’re not interested in booking directly with an airline, for whatever reason, and instead prefer to use an online travel agency (OTA) , you can still be in luck.

OTAs are websites such as Expedia and Hotwire that will aggregate and display airfares to show you all of the different prices for the flights you’re looking for, no matter which airline. This can be helpful if you’re not loyal to any 1 airline or are particularly price-sensitive since if you’re booking via an OTA you’ll always be able to snag the lowest price.

Hot Tip: OTAs will only ever give you a discount on your actual reservation — not your baggage or airline lounge access. You are, however, still entitled to these. You’ll simply need to ask for them at the airport as you otherwise would; booking via an OTA does not change this benefit.

Expedia’s military discounts aren’t constant. You’ll see them from time to time, but the site doesn’t have any ongoing benefits. You’ll need to check its website occasionally to see if any offers pop up.

CheapTickets

CheapTickets is a sister site to Expedia and offers the most generous military discount we’ve seen on travel. Once you’ve verified your info with Sheer ID — whether you’re on active duty or a veteran — you’ll receive a whopping 18% discount on your airfare purchase. That’s one way to get cheap military flights!

American Forces Travel

American Forces Travel is a website co-developed between the Morale, Welfare, and Recreation (MWR) office and Priceline . It’s hosted by Priceline and in order to use it, you’ll need to verify your eligibility. As long as you are able to access MWR you’ll be able to get into the American Forces Travel site, which uses the info in your DEERS account for verification.

This website doesn’t specify its total discounts but does offer some really excellent deals when compared to public offerings.

Bottom Line: OTAs can be a good way to quickly find the cheapest flight for your travel dates. And with discounts of up to 18% off, it’s a no-brainer to apply your military benefits to all your airfare.

Look, there’s no reason you shouldn’t get your discounts. If you’re a military member, a veteran, or even a spouse, plenty of airlines are willing and able to give you discounts to thank you for your sacrifices. They aren’t always huge, but with benefits ranging from an 18% discount to free lounge entry, there’s no reason not to take advantage of these perks.

The information regarding the Alaska Airlines Visa Signature ® credit card was independently collected by Upgraded Points and not provided nor reviewed by the issuer.

Southwest Airlines

southwest airlines military travel

Traveling is a big part of your life when working in the military. You’ve likely left family behind on countless occasions to fly to destinations all over the country, if not the world! Flying is the most convenient way to travel, and by far the fastest. But it’s also the most pricey, due to the cost of jet fuel and other airline-incurred expenses.

Southwest Airlines is well-known for both their high-quality flight experience and their reasonable fares. They happily fly passengers to a multitude of locations, both across the US and the rest of the world. They even offer vacation bundle rates to allow you to save even more on your trip — as well as make the booking process easier for you!

How To Get The Southwest Airlines Military Discount

Military personnel are rewarded for their service in several ways when they choose to fly Southwest. Not only will you receive a special military fare, but you’re also allowed free luggage (up to 20 additional pieces) and priority boarding on all flights. You’ll have to call Southwest directly to receive the special rate, but that’s a small price to pay for all the savings you’ll be getting!

Southwest Airlines Military Boarding and Other Benefits

Updated: Apr 21

Southwest Airlines became a major airline through no frills and minimum fees. They are famous for their open seating policy and checked luggage flying for free. As other airlines struggled, Southwest thrived by offering flights at a fraction of the cost of its competitors. Southwest has had a reputation for great customer service and that doesn’t end with serving the military community. Southwest Airlines provides a few benefits and perks for the military community, including military boarding, baggage accommodations, and military fares.

Southwest Airlines Military Boarding

A Southwest Airlines airplane takes off.

Anybody who has ever flown with Southwest would understand with the open seating policy, how early you get to board the aircraft can make or break your flight. If you have never flown with Southwest before, I recommend you check out their boarding process FAQs  to gain an understanding of how it works. For the sake of brevity, I will just leave it at you want to board as early as possible. With this in mind, the fact that Southwest allows military personnel to potentially board earlier in the process can be a significant perk for travelers. Southwest allows all active-duty US military members, with a valid ID, to board between the A and B groups. This is significant, because it essentially guarantees the traveler to get the type of seat (aisle, middle, or window) that is desired. Additionally, there will be ample room in the overhead containers to accommodate any carry-on luggage. Boarding earlier in the process is a similar benefit provided by other airlines, but it has a more significant impact when flying on Southwest.

Checked Bags for Military

The cover of a book called, "The Long Work Trip".

Just as the early boarding perk has a uniquely greater impact for those flying on Southwest, the military baggage has a uniquely lesser impact for most of those flying Southwest. Southwest offers two free checked bags, 50lbs or less, for all their customers. Active-duty military customers, however, are exempt from the two-piece baggage limit and will not be subject to excess, oversize, or overweight baggage up to 100lbs or 80 inches in size (L+W+H). Therefore, Southwest allows active-duty members to travel with up to 20 pieces of baggage each up to 100lbs. It is important to note this does not extend to dependents if not travelling with the active-duty member. Non-active military customers must have their orders to receive the exception. Active-duty personnel simply need to provide an active military ID at the time of check-in to receive the exception. If you plan to travel with lots of luggage or are taking a long family trip with lots of bags, this perk could certainly come in handy.

Southwest Airlines Military Fares

Southwest also offers military fares for Active-duty, cadets, reservists and National Guard with active orders, and their dependents. I have personally used the Southwest military fares a couple of times and my experience has been mixed. The benefit of this perk is highly dependent upon the route you are flying. Although not stated on their website, the prices appeared to align with the Government city pair prices. These prices can be found on the General Services Administration  website. This means if the commercial flights are above the city pair prices, then the military fares would be beneficial. Many times, the prices found on Southwest.com are lower than these prices, however. The other problem I ran into when trying to book the military fare is that each flight only has a small number of military tickets allocated to it. This means that if the military fares are less than the publicly offered fares, they tend to be booked very quickly. As I mentioned, I have used this multiple times and there have been several times where I have saved up to 30% off the advertised price. You cannot find these fares online, but it is worth the phone call to Southwest to see if there are tickets available, 1-800-I-FLY-SWA (1-800-435-9792).

Southwest Airlines provides several military benefits and perks while continuing to be an exemplar of quality customer service. Depending on your route, the military fares can be very beneficial. Additionally, the early boarding can ensure you get the seat you’re looking for. Finally, if you’re travelling with lots of bags, Southwest has you covered by providing not only the first two bags free, but up to twenty. Thank you to Southwest Airlines for supporting our men and women in uniform and providing these great military benefits.

Space-A Travel

One of the best ways to save money while traveling is through Space-A. Most of the flights are free or have a small tax in the case of Patriot Express flights.

However, flying Space-A isn’t as simple as buying a ticket and then showing up for your flight. Space-A is a privilege, not a benefit, and will allow uniformed service members and their dependents the ability to fly on DOD aircraft on a space-available basis.

Space-A Eligibility

You or your dependents will be in different categories based on military status. Space-A Travel is available to active duty, retirees that hold a Blue retiree ID card and receive retirement pay, as well as their dependents.

Retirees with a Gray Area ID card have limited availability however their dependents are not able to use Space-A. National Guard and reserves can use Space-A in certain circumstances and they and their dependents can use Space-A if they are activated over 30 days.

Space-A can pretty much take you anywhere in the world as long as there is a terminal that uses Space-A nearby. However, you may be limited on where you can go based on your status. There is a complicated sign-up process and you might have to wait longer than normal in order to travel to where you want to go.

Many times a flight can get canceled and they can only take a limited amount of people. It is best to use Space-A when you have extra time and flying when school is in session for dependents would make things a little easier.

USDOT Announces “Support Our Troops” Dashboard to Improve Air Travel for Military Service Members and Their Families

Allegiant, Frontier, and Spirit took steps to enhance their travel benefits for service members

WASHINGTON – Today, the U.S. Department of Transportation announced a new “Support Our Troops” dashboard to help U.S. military service members and their immediate family members more easily access travel benefits offered by the 10 largest U.S. airlines. The dashboard clearly displays each airlines’ commitments to service members and their immediate family as reflected in their Customer Service Plan at flightrights.gov/military , including benefits such as free carry-on and checked bags and providing refunds without additional fees when their flight plans change due to a military order or directive.

“As someone who often flew on military orders as an officer in the U.S. Navy Reserve, I know the unique pressures our service members and their families can face when traveling,” said U.S. Transportation Secretary Pete Buttigieg . “Service members and their families make extraordinary commitments and sacrifices for this country, and they deserve support and recognition whenever they fly.”

Following Secretary Buttigieg’s call-to-action to airlines to improve military travel benefits, Spirit Airlines, Allegiant Air, and Frontier Airlines stepped up their existing commitments in their Customer Service Plan for service members and their families. Alaska Airlines, American Airlines, Delta Air Lines, Hawaiian Airlines, JetBlue Airways, and United Airlines declined to make clear and enforceable commitments to U.S. service members and their families. Southwest Airlines has received two green checkmarks on the dashboard because of its existing baggage and change fee policies that apply to all passengers.  In making determinations on which commitments are reflected on the dashboard, DOT’s Office of Aviation Consumer Protection consulted with the U.S. Department of Defense (DOD) and highlighted those commitments that the Department believes are most meaningful to service members and their families.

"Commitments for current Service Members and Families Dashboard"

The “Support Our Troops” dashboard highlights benefits that make air travel easier for U.S. service members and their immediate family members when engaging in personal travel. DOT’s dashboard gives a green checkmark to an airline for each benefit that the airline commits to provide:

  • Waives cancellation fees and ensures full refunds for service members and accompanying family members who cancel travel plans due to a military order or directive (documentation may be required).
  • Waives change fees for service members and accompanying family members who reschedule flights due to a military order or directive (documentation may be required).
  • At least one free standard carry-on and at least two free standard checked bags for service members and their accompanying spouse and children with appropriate identification such as a valid military ID.
  • The lowest fare for a flight for immediate family members to visit service members recently injured in the line of duty with supporting documentation.

DOT defines “service member” for the purpose of the “Support Our Troops” dashboard as current members of the military who are serving or may be called to serve. This definition was developed with input from DOD. At a minimum, these members include:

  • U.S. Army, U.S. Navy, U.S. Air Force, U.S. Marines, U.S. Space Force, U.S. Coast Guard, National Guard, and U.S. Military Reserves with a current valid military ID;
  • Cadets of the Air Force Academy, West Point, Naval Academy, Coast Guard Academy, and Merchant Marine Academy with a current valid military ID; and
  • Commissioned Corps and Ready Reserve Corps of the U.S. Public Health Service and Commissioned Officers Corps of the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration’s Officer Corps with current valid military ID.

Airlines may offer additional benefits to service members and their families. For their benefits to be reflected on the dashboard, however, airlines are required to expressly provide them to all service members as defined by DOT and make these commitments in their Customer Service Plan or make them easily accessible from their Customer Service Plan. To the extent an airline’s military benefits fall short of these requirements, the Department may not be able to hold the airline accountable for failing to honor its commitments. Members of the military are encouraged to check the airline’s website or contact the airline’s customer service agents for more information.

DOT’s Historic Record of Consumer Protection Under the Biden-Harris Administration Under the Biden-Harris Administration, DOT has advanced the largest expansion of airline passenger rights, issued the biggest fines against airlines for failing consumers, and returned more money to passengers in refunds and reimbursements than ever before in the Department’s history.

  • Last month, DOT announced two final rules that require airlines to provide automatic cash refunds to passengers when owed and protect consumers from costly surprise airline fees . These rules will significantly expand consumer protections in air travel, provide passengers an easier pathway to refunds when owed, and save consumers more than half a billion dollars every year in hidden and surprise junk fees. Provisions of the final rule on airline refund were fortified through the FAA reauthorization bill that President Biden signed into law on May 16, 2024.
  • In 2022, under Secretary Buttigieg’s guidance, DOT created an Airline Customer Service Dashboard known as FlightRights.gov to help airline passengers understand what they are entitled to receive certain services and amenities when a significant delay or cancellation was within the airlines’ control and create enforceable standards. Now all 10 major U.S. airlines guarantee free rebooking and meals, and nine guarantee hotel accommodations when an airline issue causes a significant delay or cancellation. These are new commitments the airlines added to their Customer Service Plans that DOT can legally ensure they adhere to and are displayed on flightrights.gov .
  • Since President Biden took office, DOT has helped return almost $4 billion in refunds and reimbursements owed to airline passengers – including more than $600 million refunds and reimbursements to passengers affected by the Southwest Airlines holiday meltdown in 2022.
  • DOT has issued over $164 million in penalties against airlines for consumer protection violations. Between 1996 and 2020, DOT collectively issued less than $71 million in penalties against airlines for consumer protection violations.
  •  DOT recently launched a new partnership with a bipartisan group of state attorneys general to fast-track the review of consumer complaints, hold airlines accountable, and protect the rights of the traveling public.
  •  In 2023, the flight cancellation rate in the U.S. was a record low at under 1.2% – the lowest rate of flight cancellations in over 10 years despite a record amount of air travel.
  •  DOT is undertaking its first ever industry-wide review of airline privacy practices and its first review of airline loyalty programs.

In addition to finalizing the rules to require automatic refunds and protect consumers from surprise fees, DOT is also pursuing rulemakings that would:

  • Propose to ban family seating junk fees and guarantee that parents can sit with their children for no extra charge when they fly. Before President Biden and Secretary Buttigieg pressed airlines last year, no airline committed to guaranteeing fee-free family seating. Now, four airlines guarantee fee-free family seating, as the Department is working on its family seating junk fee ban proposal.
  • Propose to make passenger compensation and amenities mandatory so that travelers are taken care of when airlines cause flight delays or cancellations.
  • Expand the rights for passengers who use wheelchairs and ensure that they can travel safely and with dignity.

DOT’s aviation consumer protection website makes it easy for travelers to understand their rights. Consumers may file an airline complaint with the Department here .

To claim Southwest Airlines military baggage policy, you must present one of the following documents at the check-in counter:

  • A valid US Military Identification Card
  • A copy of your discharge papers

You must also have a confirmed reservation on a Southwest Airlines flight. You cannot claim the military baggage allowance on flights operated by other airlines or codeshare partners.

Unless dependents are traveling with a military personnel member who was discharged within a week of travel, they must present a valid US Military Services Identification and Privilege Card.

Typical carry-on bags include:

  • Small suitcase
  • Garment bag

Southwest doesn’t specify a weight limit for carry-on bags. However, you should be able to lift it into the overhead bins without requiring assistance.

Checked Baggage Allowance

Number of bags.

Active-duty military personnel and their dependents aren’t subject to the 2 checked bag limit . In fact, you can check up to 20 checked bags.

Hot Tip: If you intend to travel with a large number of checked bags, arrive at the check-in counter early to allow enough time for your documents to be verified and bags checked.

How to measure suitcase

Your checked bags can be up to 80 linear inches (203 centimeters) in size. This is calculated by measuring your bag’s outside length, width, and height , then adding these measurements together. Unlike most other airlines, you don’t have to include any protruding luggage wheels in your measurements.

Southwest won’t accept checked bags larger than 80 linear inches. However, if you’re an authorized Transport Security Administration (TSA) Known Shipper , your oversized bags can be transported by Southwest Cargo .

Each of your checked bags can weigh up to 100 pounds (45 kilograms).

Southwest won’t accept checked bags weighing more than 100 pounds.

Baggage Fees

Active-duty military passengers are not subject to oversized, overweight, or excess bag fees.

Final Thoughts

Southwest Airlines offers a very generous military baggage allowance for qualifying military passengers:

Checked Baggage

  • Up to 20 checked bags, each up to 80 linear inches and 100 pounds
  • No oversized, overweight, or excess baggage fees

Carry-On Baggage

  • 1 personal item
  • 1 carry-on bag

Don’t forget to bring your military ID with you to the airport, as this will need to be verified when you check in.

Discount Air Travel

Space-a travel, discounts on lodging and resorts, hotel discounts, base lodging, military resorts, military vacation clubs, other military travel discounts, rental cars, savings through travel websites, credit cards and rewards programs, finding the best military travel discounts takes time.

Several companies offer military discounts on air travel, lodging, resorts and more.

Even if you can’t score a military discount , you can still save money with travel promotions, credit card travel rewards , and more. Here’s what you need to know about military travel discounts.

Many U.S. airlines offer a military discount or incentive, such as checked bag fee waivers or seat upgrades.

However, these offers are not listed on travel websites. You must visit the airline’s website or call its customer service department to get a discount. Remember, airline discounts may only apply to active-duty, National Guard, or reserve service members and may only apply when traveling on orders.

Space-available travel is excellent when it works: it’s a free seat on a military aircraft that’s headed to the same place you’re going (or close to it). However, Space-A seats are increasingly hard to come by.

You may have to wait a few days for a seat – if you get one at all. You should only travel Space-A if you’ve got a flexible schedule and a backup plan (which may include purchasing a last-minute airline ticket).

Veterans with a 100% service-connected disability rating, active-duty service members, National Guardsmen, reservists, retirees and dependents of these groups are eligible to travel Space-A.

Visit the AMC Travel Site or contact the nearest military passenger terminal to learn more about Space-A opportunities near you.

AMC’s Space-A Travel Handbook

You can simplify your travel by booking your airline ticket, hotel room and rental car at the same time. However, bundling isn’t always the least expensive option. Compare prices across a few services if you have time.

Some of these companies offer discount plans or rewards for frequent customers. For example, Hotels.com offers a free one-night hotel stay for every 10 nights you reserve through them.

Using a travel rewards program can help you earn points and benefits like free checked bags, priority boarding, free flights, free hotel stays and other perks. You can earn even more points with a credit card rewards program.

Some of the more popular travel credit cards are a joint offering between a credit card company and a specific airline or hotel chain. These reward cards may come with a sign-up bonus equal to a free flight or several nights at a hotel. Other perks may include free checked bags for you and your party, priority boarding, flight discounts, merchandise and other benefits.

  • Military credit cards
  • Airline credit cards
  • Travel rewards credit cards

With any credit card, read the fine print before you sign up for any deals, and pay your card in full each month to avoid any fees or interest.

In my experience, booking the best travel deals requires a little legwork and a lot of patience. Always check with your unit before booking travel if you are traveling on military orders. They may have access to special offers or other requirements.

If you are traveling alone, start by determining if your itinerary allows for some military-specific travel options, such as Space-A, Armed Forces Recreation Centers or base lodging. If you cannot work one or more of those into your itinerary, you can still save money with some of the deals and services listed above.

Safe travels!

Hearing about companies that have a military discount allows you to save money and that is a good thing. With the cost of travel so high these days, finding a military discount on your airline tickets is a way to save money, especially if you want to fly home to visit family or send your child back home for school breaks during college.

The Southwest military discount offers a way for you to save on travel.  But is it the best deal out there?

Southwest Military Discount – What’s the Deal?

Southwest does have a military discount, although it is considered a military fare. Understanding what that means is essential. It isn’t as simple as paying for your flight and getting 10-15% off as you might find with other military discounts.

Never miss a military discount!  Sign up for our Military Discount Newsletter.

What is the Southwest Military Rate?

  • Discounted fares for military – see note below
  • No charge for bags, even if you have more than 2
  • No cancellation fees for military
  • Early boarding

Southwest Airlines Military Fare Is Not Always the Cheapest Rate

The biggest thing to know about the Southwest military rate is that it isn’t always the cheapest way to get a ticket with them. When you are trying to get the military discount you have to call them on the phone, you can not do this online.

Usually, when booking tickets with Southwest, you can do so using their website or app. When you go to search, you will see a few different rates for each choice. One of those rates is called, “Wanna Get Away.” These rates tend to be cheaper than the rates you get by calling and asking for a military one.

Because of this, you should always call Southwest and ask about the current military rate for that flight. Then compare that rate with their current “Wanna Get Away” rate to see which is a better price. In some cases, they might not even have military rate flights available for when you want to fly.

Overall the Southwest military discount is perfect for when you need to make last-minute travel plans. In those cases, the “Wanna Get Away” prices can be booked up, and you might be left with very high prices. Regular rates can sometimes be over half what the “Wanna Get Away” or the military rate might be.

Who’s Eligible for the Discount?

  • Active Duty
  • Reservists with active orders
  • National Guard members with active orders
  • Coast Guard members with active orders
  • Cadets/midshipmen attending the U.S. Air Force Academy, U.S. Naval Academy, U.S. Military Academy [West Point], and the U.S. Coast Guard Academy
  • Authorized dependents

Bags: Does Southwest Charge the Military for Bags?

Southwest does not charge anyone for their first 2 bags as long as they are under 50 lbs each.

If you are on active duty, you will not be charged for more than 2 bags.

If you are on non-active duty on orders, you will also not be charged for more than 2 bags.

Southwest Offers No Cancellation Fees for Military

Even though you might not be able to get the military fare while booking your Southwest trip, it is good to know their cancellation policy.

As a service member, times and dates change, and you might need to change the date of your trip. Southwest will not charge you a fee for this change.  However, you will need to use your ticket within a year, and it is not transferable to someone else.

This can give you some comfort when booking your tickets and think there is a chance something could change.

Military Can Board the Flight Early

As of September 2022, all active duty military members, even if not wearing the uniform, can board early. You would need to show your military ID.

Should You Use this Discount?

If you are planning a trip or must fly your college student home, look into the Southwest military rates. Taking the time to compare rates can save you some money.

If you cannot use the military discount but can use the “Wanna Get Away” rate, you will still be able to save money.

The military rate can also save you money if you need to book tickets on an emergency basis and all the “Wanna Get Away” tickets have been sold.

Southwest does not fly overseas, other than Mexico, Central America, and the Caribbean, so if you are stationed OCONUS, they will not be an option for you to fly home to visit.

NOTE: Due to the nature of military discounts, the terms listed above could change at any time. Always please check with the company directly for the most updated information.

Southwest Airlines Military Discount: Baggage & Fare 2024

  • Southwest Airlines Military Discount: Baggage…

southwest military discount is applicable for US military member and his dependent

Many airlines offer discounts for those who serve the U.S. military as well as those retired from service. For each airline, the perks change. This is why you must research the specific airline you’re using before booking.

Key Takeaway Southwest Airlines has both baggage and fare discounts for active military personnel only but they are not in flat rates . This includes specialized military fare and baggage policies differing from the average customer. Some of these discounts include larger bags for free and early boarding for no extra fee.

There are other benefits as well. To learn more about all the benefits that the military receives when using Southwest Airlines, continue reading below.

Table of Contents

Active Duty Military Fares

Southwest does offer a specialized military fare for any active duty military. However, unlike many other airlines, it is not a flat rate discount . You must call a number to book these flights or go in person to visit the ticket counter to get that fare, which will change with every flight.

The issue with these specialized rates is that they are not always cheaper than the standard fare . Look into the military discount and compare it to standard rates to see which is better for your budget and where you want to be seated.

Divisions Included

All active-duty military personnel are welcome to use this fare and are given equal rates no matter which branch. Here is a complete list of all branches of the military as well as exceptions that are eligible to use the military fares.

  • U.S. Marine Corps
  • U.S. Air Force
  • U.S. Space Force
  • U.S. Coast Guard
  • Reservists for any branch
  • National Guard members
  • U.S. Air Force Academy Cadets
  • U.S. Naval Academy Cadets
  • U.S.Military Academy (West Point) Cadets
  • U.S. Coast Guard Academy Cadets
  • Authorized Dependents

Cancellations Fees

All active duty military members who book through Southwest will not be charged with any cancellation fees . This applies whether you use your military fare or not. Active duty military members are allowed to change the time and date of their flight as long as it is used within a year.

Boarding Policies for Active Duty Military

Active duty military members get boarding benefits when it is time for their flight to take off. Depending on how you booked your flight, your boarding group can vary. You can also get pushed back into later boarding groups even when booking with military fares.

If you mention this to a staff member of Southwest when the time comes to board, they will bump you up to board between groups A and B as long as you have proof of your active duty status.

Lounge Access

Unlike some other airlines, Southwest does not give active-duty military members free access to their lounge. It does not give anyone free access to lounges including its credit card holders or loyalty program members. This is because they do not have their own private airport lounges like many other airlines.

Baggage Fees and Limitations for Active Duty Military

All customers who fly with Southwest get two bags for free as long as each one is under 50 pounds. Active duty members of the military get a special exception for many baggage policies if they fly with Southwest as long as they have proof of their military status.

Bag Policies

While most people get two bags for free, active-duty military personnel are exempt from the two-bag limit like other customers are. They are allowed any number of checked bags provided each bag remains under 100 pounds and 80 linear inches in size when adding length, width, and height.

Bags must also follow all of the airline’s bag policies. To read more about Southwest’s policies, check out our article on Southwest Airlines baggage policies .

For more specific information on the different kinds of equipment you can pack in your bags, you may have to go to Southwest’s website. However, we have you covered on sports equipment specifically, so also feel free to read our article on Southwest Airlines’ sports equipment policy .

While verified dependents are included in the military fare policies, they are not included in their baggage policies. Dependents are subject to the same baggage policies as any other person flying with the airline at a two-bag limit, each under 50 pounds. If they are traveling with the active duty member, exceptions may apply.

Pet Transportation

Pet transportation on Southwest Airlines applies equally to all military members. The animals must be small, vaccinated, and packed in a carrier appropriately. The pets must be above a certain age and also be flown with you rather than in cargo.

Military Dogs

The only exception for active duty military is for military-trained dogs. Southwest allows fully trained law enforcement or military service dogs to fly without any additional fees if they are with their handler. You need to keep all important and related documents on hand for easy access while in the airport.

Veteran Discounts

Unfortunately, Southwest Airlines does not offer any special discounts for non-active duty military personnel. This includes veterans. Southwest Airlines also has no offers through the popular Veterans Advantage program. All their discounts and extras are specifically for active-duty military and occasionally their verified dependents.

A Southwest flight appeared to take off from a closed runway that had a vehicle on it without being cleared by air traffic control

  • A Southwest Airlines flight took off from a closed runway despite air traffic control warnings.
  • The pilots didn't communicate with the tower or other planes, an ATC recording suggests.
  • The NTSB is investigating the latest incident involving a Southwest plane.

Insider Today

A Southwest Airlines flight appeared to take off from a closed runway that had a vehicle on it, despite air traffic control trying to warn the pilots.

The National Transportation Safety Board is investigating the incident.

Flight 4805 departed Portland, Maine for Baltimore at 5:42 a.m. on Tuesday, per Flightradar24 . However, a NOTAM — a notice to flight crews — said that Runway 29 was closed for takeoff until 5:45 a.m.

In an audio recording published by LiveATC.net, the controller can be heard cautioning the Southwest pilots as the plane departs.

"There is a vehicle on the runway. The runway is closed," he said. Another person added: "I tried warning him."

Six minutes later, ground operations asked the controller: "Did you ever get a hold of that Southwest plane once he's airborne or is he still kind of MIA in that regard?"

"We never talked to the aircraft," he replied.

Related stories

The Portland ATC tower doesn't officially open until 5:45 a.m. Instead, pilots are supposed to communicate on the common traffic advisory frequency (CTAF) so other pilots know what's going on.

However, it appears that the Southwest pilots didn't talk on this radio frequency either.

Per the ATC recording, the controller told ground operations: "You were on the runway and had to exit, and he wasn't even on CTAF."

In a statement, Southwest said it is engaged with the NTSB and Federal Aviation Administration to understand what happened. "After departure, the aircraft continued safely to its destination," it added.

Portland International Jetport did not immediately comment, noting the active NTSB investigation.

The NTSB said in a statement that a preliminary report will be available in 30 days.

The incident is one of several to involve a Southwest plane in recent months. On June 18, Flight 4069 was just 500 feet above the ground while still nine miles away from the airport — prompting a low-altitude alert at air traffic control.

Also this month, a Southwest pilot accidentally sent his plane into a dive before it avoided crashing into the ocean near Hawaii.

And in May, a Southwest 737 Max experienced a rare but serious stability issue known as a Dutch roll . The jet has since been out of service for over a month while the NTSB investigates.
