Pokemon HeartGold/SoulSilver - Safari Zone Guide

Pokemon HeartGold and SoulSilver – Safari Zone Strategy Guide

In the original Pokemon Gold, Silver and Crystal , when your Trainer traveled to Kanto you found that the Safari Zone had moved out of Fuchsia City. This meant no Safari Zone Pokemon for your character. In Pokemon Heart Gold and Soul Silver , the Safari Zone is back… just in a brand new location. It’s the biggest and most complex Safari Zone to date, so let’s take a look at what all you’ll have to go through to catch ’em all.

First of all, the basic premise has stayed the same – you are given thirty Safari Balls and you have a limited number of steps to catch Pokemon with. Your play ends when you run out of either steps or Safari Balls. This new Safari Zone is a lot more Trainer friendly however. Remember in the old games where you’d have to waste half your steps just to get to an area where you could hopefully find a Chansey? Well, now the Safari Zone is customizable. By using your DS stylus and the touch pad, you can move around the order of the six Safari Zones. This means if all you need to complete the Pokedex is say, a Smeargle, you can set it up so that the Field area of the Safari Zone is right at the entrance, giving you a better chance of catching it. Each of the six zones features distinctly different Pokemon, so you’ll have to visit them all eventually.

The Safari Zone Warden will also have tasks he will assign to you. The first is to get him a Geodude. In return, he’ll activate the customization ability mentioned in the previous paragraph. After that, he will ask you for a Sandshrew. Once you bring him one he’ll activate a new level of customization. This will involve special items that can attract Pokemon that would otherwise not appear in the Safari Zone. Each of these special Pokemon will require a set number of items to be laid down in the Safari Zone in the area they would show up in. Now you can only have 30 items out at a time, and some Pokemon like, say, Carnivine require 25 Grassland item to be laid out in the Desert area. That leaves you only five items to place elsewhere in the zone. The good thing is that the longer you leave these items out, the more experience those items will get, and they will level up like a Pokemon. These items will eventually be worth up to seven times their original value (based on how long you leave them out for), so things will get easier to catch all the Pokemon possible in the Safari Zone. Some rarely occurring Pokemon will not only requires items to be set out, but will also require those items to sit in the area for a length of time before they appear. Remember Carnivine in our item example? Well you’ll also have to leave those items in the Desert for ten straight days before he’ll begin to appear. Because of this, you might want to consider looking for Carnivine in the Marshlands where he requires only 18 points of items, but he will then take 20 days to appear. It’s up to you.

Here now is an easy to read table of each Pokemon and the requirements you’ll need to make them appear within the Safari Zone.

Where can you find a ghastly or a Haunter?

Where can you catch a ghastly/Haunter here?

Sprout Tower at night.

i was thinking…you know that u have 2 wait a certain amout of days for sum pokemon 2 appear…can u jus like change the date on your DS so that it makes the game think that say 20days have gone past??? any one know?

Sean Avatar

@brendan, no i don’t think it will work like that, if you change the date on your ds it takes at least 24 hours in order for anything time related to happen, as far as changing it 20 days and than waiting 24 hours i’m not sure but personally i wouldn’t waste my time trying

COKSUKA Avatar

@Brendan, might work, changing the time from 1pm to 1am makes it night so I don’t see why not. Worth a try, it takes 2 mins to do. it’s a stupid thing to put in a game anyway, the majority of people beat the elite 4 in less than 2 weeks, then they’re done with the game, not going to sit around for 110 days for some shit pokemon to appear.

SHADOW SHAYMIN Avatar

no you cant change the date but if you forward your clock to 23.29 and wait a minute then save then repete for an extra day each time thats how i got riolu

Thom Avatar

Is there anyway you can tell if you have made the rarer pokemon appear??

J-Man Avatar

@Shadow Shaymin – Why 23.29, and not 23.59? I’m gonna try what you recommend.

rye Avatar

need help to find dragon type pokemon realy strong to beat 9 gym

There is no ninth gym. There are two sets of eight.

Someone Avatar

@Shaymin: Are you just BSing? I’ve tried the same approach for bagon and then shelgon and both times was unable to catch one.

I should add that the time to set the clock to (and the time that I used) is 23:59

luke Avatar

the date changes work for me in the safari zone as do they for the bug catching contest(tho i dont recomend jumping ahead because it records the days you do the contest i would only do that for days you missed)

on another note the the best way to get any pokemon is to have the other versions. thats how i did it i legitimantly have seen caught and curently own every pokemon in all ther evolved forms thats the best thing i can recomind because yes the waiting is bs when i can just do in 5 min on another vesion and trade over what its making me do in like 100+ days

Spyder0 Avatar

Now if it says have 18 rocky items, do you have to have exactly 18 items or can you just wait till it counts as 18 rocky items?

Judas Avatar

@Luke, not everyone has 2 DS’s to trade the stuff over. I have 100% pokedex in diamond, but there’s not much I can do about it with one ds.

To begin, we'll explore the room of Dark Cave accessible from Route 31 and Route 46, so Fly to Violet City and leave to the east to reach Dark Cave. This section of Dark Cave is the only place where you can find Dunsparce, a Normal-type with high HP and decent Attack who can abuse Serene Grace, but it's very rare unless Professor Oak announces that it's swarming on his Radio show. From the entrance, head north, then go east and turn south. Hop the ledge, grab the Potion on the ground, as well as the Poke Ball hidden in a rock to its right, and then go south and Surf across the pool of water to reach a Black Flute, a godsend item that repels Wild Pokemon when used. Surf back up, jump across the second set of ledges and then loop back around without jumping over any of the ledges this time to find a set of breakable rocks.

Bust through the rocks and continue east. There's water above you, but Surfing across only leads to a section of Dark Cave's rear room that you can't navigate from this side, so ignore it. You'll run across a Strength boulder, so push it aside and continue on until you see another smashable rock. If you came here from the Route 45 entrance and don't have Rock Smash, you'll have to go south and miss out on items. Otherwise, break the rock and go north. Follow the path here until you see a Hyper Potion on the ground, and then jump the ledge to the south. You'll be on a ledge with two staircases, and you'll want to take the right one that's facing downward, but examine the right wall here for a hidden Max Ether. Proceed south until you find a Full Heal, and then jump the ledge to your right; follow this path south to find a Dire Hit and the Route 46 exit.

The easiest way to explore the rear of Dark Cave is to Fly to Blackthorn City and walk to the entrance by going south. Dark Cave's back room is one of the only places where you can find wild Wobbuffet, the infamous Psychic-type with high HP, the broken Shadow Tag ability that prevents switching or fleeing, and no direct attacks. Head west from the entrance and take the first stairway south; at the end of this dead-end ledge is a hidden Elixir. Wrap around to reach the pool of water in the southeast and then Surf your way all the way south until you wash ashore. You'll find a Revive on a ledge nearby, so grab it and continue working your way west. When you see TM54 - False Swipe, a weak Normal-type attack that always will leave the target with at least 1 HP, STOP; don't hop the ledge. Return to the water and Surf northeast to the diagonal shore.

After crossing the water, you'll want to follow the path and trek north until the stairway, at which point you'll let the path take you southwest until you descend another staircase. After you descend, go left and climb another staircase that brings you up to a ledge on the western side of the room. Follow this platform up and then right and, after climbing another stairway, you'll find a man in shades. If you talk to him, he'll give you some BlackGlasses, a hold item that booses Dark-type moves by 20%. Check a rock behind him to find a hidden Max Revive, and then descend the two stairways and head south. After jumping four sets of platforms, you'll be near the entrance to the front of the cave. Before going through, examine the only rock in this section for a Hyper Potion. After that, you can leave the front room normally or with an Escape Rope.

While Slowpoke Well was visited early in the game, there is actually a lower floor that you cannot access until after you have Surf and Strength. Return to Azalea Town once you can use these HMs and head down into the Well. Just beyond where you fought Proton is a Strength boulder, so push it aside and Surf across the pool of water to reach the ladder to the basement.

Downstairs, you can Surf northeast to find TM18 - Rain Dance, which summons rain for five turns, and to your northwest is a man who will give you a King's Rock, a hold item that gives many attacks a chance to make the opponent flinch. King's Rock also evolves Slowpoke into Slowking and Poliwhirl into Politoed if these Pokemon are traded while holding this item. You can now return upstairs and leave Slowpoke Well but, since you're in the area, let's revisit Union Cave too.

As with Slowpoke Well, Union Cave was visited early in the game and has sublevels that you can't access until after getting Surf and Strength. If you come here anytime on a Friday, you should bring some Ultra Balls and Pokemon that knows a sleep-inducing move because Lapras also appears in the basement. To get to Lapras from the Azalea Town entrance, head west. After a Hiker, you should see a pool of water in the bottom-left corner of the room, so Surf across it and go downstairs. You'll encounter a Pokemaniac who has two Marowak, so defeat him and Surf east to find another Pokemaniac with a Kangaskhan. The next staircase is just beyond this guy.

Downstairs in Union Cave B2, you'll see a large body of water, so Surf south until you can turn east and then north; there's an Elixir on land in the top right corner of the room. After that keep Surfing south until can't keep going down; wash ashore here and fight the male Ace Trainer, who has all three of Kanto Region's Starter Pokemon. On a ledge just above him is a Hyper Potion, so grab that and Surf west to the land just below a female Ace Trainer who uses all four members the Eevee family that debuted in Generation I. Grab the Calcium hidden on the floor behind her, and then head south to snag an Ultra Ball hiding in a jagged rock behind another female Ace Trainer with a Poliwhirl. Surf east from this Trainer and you should find Lapras in the waters.

After catching Lapras, return upstairs to the first floor of Union Cave. After you Surf back across the water, Surf north through the upper body of water and examine the jagged rock on an island to find a Big Pearl; there's also a Potion on the land above here if you didn't get it earlier. There's one more section of Union Cave to explore in the top left corner of this room, west of the Route 32 entrance. Take the staircase down after the Firebreather and, if you followed the main walkthrough's guidance earlier, this is the floor where you found TM38 - Rock Blast. An X Speed is in a rock immediately left of the stairway. Surf north and battle the Hiker who has a Geodude and a Machop. A Revive is hidden in a rock just northeast of him; continue north.

You'll see two paths here: the north has a Hiker with a Geodude and a Graveler, and the south has a Strength boulder. Both of these paths lead to sections of the Ruins of Alph to the north. Take the upper path for now and you should emerge outside near the Ruins, so go through the buildings that are in front of you and to the south is a patch of grass. This grass is the only place in the game where you can find two Pokemon: the Psychic/Flying-type Natu, which evolves into the decent Xatu, and the Normal-type Smeargle, which makes up for its middling stats with its trademark move, Sketch, which lets it permanently copy almost any attack in the game. Just above this grass is a Psychic, who has a Girafarig, and the entrance to the Ho-oh Ruins of Alph puzzle.

If you take the lower path in at the fork in Union Cave B1, push aside the Strength boulder, head upstairs and you'll emerge in a different section of the Ruins of Alph where you can access both the Omanyte and, if you jump the ledge, Aerodactyl puzzles. If you Surf across the water near the building with the Aerodactyl puzzle, you'll reach the main research building, which you can visit as soon as you leave Violet City. The Kabuto puzzle is just behind this and, as soon as you finish any one puzzle here, you'll fall into the Ruins proper and receive the Unown Report key item. The Ruins of Alph has its own separate sidequest, including all four of its puzzles and the different types of items and forms of Unown that you can find at the Ruins. Otherwise, Union Cave is complete.

As a preface, Mt. Mortar can become VERY confusing if you read these words alone. Please refer to the Mt. Mortar map to follow along more easily.

Mt. Mortar is the biggest dungeon in the game, with three entrances from different areas of Route 42 and four different floors. Two Pokemon appear in the wild for the first time: Machop, which evolves into the great Physical Fighting-type Machamp, and Marill, a Water-type who evolves into the underrated Azumarill. If you catch these, go for ones with their respective unique abilities: No Guard and Huge Power. Other than them, you'll want to bring a lot of Repels and Pokemon who know Surf, Waterfall, Strength and Rock Climb to fully explore Mt. Mortar, and take no more than five Pokemon because somebody inside will give you a gift Pokemon only if you have room for it. The walkthrough will cover Mt. Mortar starting from the middle entrance on Route 42, so if you'd like to follow along, use the entrance north of the Apricorn trees.

When you enter, there will be water all around you and a ladder straight head. This ladder allows to you exit easily later, so ignore it for now. Surf north and climb the Waterfall to reach an opening to another room at the very top of this floor. You'll end up in the Mt. Mortar Upper Cave section, just below a Super Nerd who has a Seadra. Surf west of him to grab a Rare Candy in the southwest corner of the room and then return to the start. Navigating this room requires a lot of Surfing and careful ledge hoping, so Surf across the pool just northeast of the ladder. Another Hyper Potion is is hidden in a gap between the rocks south of the land that has a Max Potion. Surf across the water to the south and follow the eastern perimeter north across two more pools of water. There's a Full Restore in one the rocks up here, so grab it and land ashore to its left.

Back on land, follow west until you have to jump across a ledge below you; examine the odd dirt pile for an HP Up and then jump ONE ledge. Resume going west until you find more water, which you should Surf across. On the other side, go right; you can jump the ledge here to get TM40 - Aerial Ace, a Physical Flying-type move that never misses, on the raised platform and then hop down and circle back around. Otherwise, go until you see more water; Surf across and an Escape Rope is on a ledge just above you. Cross the water in the top-right of the room and you'll start to work your way west again to the ladder in the top-left corner. Jump over the first ledge you see along the way to access a Dragon Scale on some elevated land. This item boosts gives a 20% boost to Dragon-type moves and it evolves Seadra into Kingdra if held when traded. Descend from the ledges, grab the Elixir, and Surf across the water to reach the ladder; just right of it, a Full Heal is hidden in the jagged rock next to the odd dirt pile. Go downstairs.

You'll now be in Mt. Mortar Lower Cave, where you can trek through the raised land below to get the Iron visible from the ladder. After that, an Ether is hidden on the platform to the east, so grab it, cross the next segment and slip through the path until you reach a stairway facing downward. If you want to get to the Karate King, take this path southwest and skip the next two paragraphs, which are dedicated to item hunting.

If you don't mind circling back to this spot, take the eastern staircase down. At the end of the southern path is a ledge that has an Iron Ball, a hold item that grounds Flying-types. Go northeast and hop the ledge to find a Nugget and a stairway to its right. Cross this path and use Rock Climb to descend in front of Full Incense, the item that lets Snorlax lay Munchlax eggs, and then go south to reach Mt. Mortar 1F. A hidden exit is in the southwest that leads you to a Dubious Disc, the hold item that evolves Porygon2 into Porygon-Z when traded. Go back inside and examine the rock in front of you for a Revive and then return to the Lower Cave room, use Rock Climb up to the dirt path, and slide down the rock path facing west. The path from here is straightforward, so grab an Ultra Ball hidden in a rock along the way and eventually you'll use Rock Climb twice more and end at a Protector, the hold item that evolves Rhydon into Rhyperior when traded.

We're stuck in the lower part of this room, so let's grab the rest of the items that are accessible from here. Go right from the Protector and push aside the Strength boulder to open a new path. Go up and you can take a detour left through an elevated section for an Ultra Ball; otherwise keep north until you see a Max Potion on the floor. Climb the staircase and trek all the way across and then down for an Escape Rope, and then retrace your steps and take the closer stairway down to find a Super Nerd with a Slowpoke. Go south from him and jump the ledge, which has a Max Repel hidden on the floor below it, and continue south over another ledge. Proceed right and climb the tall stairway to find a Revive in a secluded spot upstairs. Then return downstairs, fight the Pokemaniac's Nidoking and Nidoking, and proceed west until you can take the stairs up to reach a ladder back upstairs that leads to an Ether. Go back downstairs and you can leave this room to reach the left or right entrances of Route 42.

If you're still back at the fork atop Mt. Mortar Lower Cave or have returned here after item hunting, follow the platform southwest. At the end of the path is a Max Revive, and just to its right is a ladder that brings you down to Mt. Mortar B1, which is the room with the Karate King at last! Take the first stairway down and then turn right immediately. Examine the stray rock on the ground for another hidden Max Revive, and then descend a long staircase to reach Kiyo, the Master of the Fighting Dojo in Saffron City. When you speak to him, he'll challenge you to a battle with his Level 34 Hitmonlee and Hitmonchan, which are only threatening if you come here immediately after you get Surf and Strength. Otherwise, finish his Hitmonsters off with Flying- and Psychic-type moves or your strongest STAB moves. As a reward, Kiyo gives you a Level 10 Tyrogue, the pre-evolution of Hitmonlee, Hitmonchan and Hitmonchan. At Level 20, Tyrogue will evolve into one of these three Pokemon.

You can use your Escape Rope after receiving Tyrogue, but there's still some items to gather in this room, which is the last one of Mt. Mortar. Continue down the stairs below the ladder and push aside the Strength boulder to find water. Hop in and Surf straight south until you see land on your left. Examine a gap in the rocks on this path to find a secret Ultra Ball, and then cross the second body of water to get the Carbos at the end of the path. Return to the main body of water and surf northeast to a small patch of land with a PP Up. After that, resume north, and just to the right of the Strength boulder is some land with a Hyper Potion. Immediately south of this is fork in the water, so take the right branch up to find a Max Ether and then proceed south to the bottom of the pond. A Full Restore is to your right, while the ladder back upstairs is to the left. You'll emerge just in front of the center entrance to Mt. Mortar, so head outside and celebrate the end of this long dungeon.

After defeating your Rival at Mt. Moon in Kanto, you'll next find him training in the Dragon's Den. He's at the rear of the shrine, which is accessible by Surfing straight south from the entrance. When you approach him, he'll chat calmly for awhile and then Lance and Clair will enter and challenge you both to a tag battle. You don't have a choice in the matter, of course, but this battle is still significant because your Rival uses his Level 60 Starter, Level 56 Gengar and Level 58 Crobat, a Pokemon that can only evolve through happiness, symbolizing that the Rival has truly changed his ways for the better.

Clair uses Level 52 Dragonair, Level 56 Kingdra and Level 60 Dragonite, who support Lance with moves that inflict statuses, such as Thunder Wave, Yawn and Dragonbreath. They also have powerful elemental moves like Dragonair's Flamethrower and Thunderbolt, Kingdra's Ice Beam and Hydro Pump and Dragonite's Thunder and Hyper Beam. Lance's team, however, comes from his updated Indigo Plateau roster: Dragon Dance Gyarados, who Intimidates both Pokemon, Special Sweeper Charizard and Draco Meteor Dragonite. With higher levels and more versatile movesets, Lance is the real threat of the match. The good news is that they won't use items, you get to use all six of your Pokemon and Rival's three aren't dead weight, so focus on 4x weaknesses, i.e. Electric for Gyarados, Rock for Charizard, and Ice for Dragonite, and use Ice- or Dragon-type moves on the others to pull through.

After you win, Lance and Clair will congratulate you both on your victory, while your Rival will resolve to continue training both his Pokemon and heart in hopes that he'll be able to beat you one day. That's it for the Dragon's Den, so go ahead and leave.

Baoba opens Johto's Safari Zone after you heal Amphy at Olivine Lighthouse. To reach the new area, you must enter the cave at northern Cianwood City and travel through two Routes, 47 and 48, that are new to Johto in HGSS. Head through Cliff Edge Cave to reach Route 47. The trainers and wild Pokemon of this Route are generally weak, even if you come here immediately after healing Amphy. Route 47 is includes both mountain and grass segments, but otherwise it's pretty linear, so take the path in front of you, fighting a Hiker with three Dunsparce along the way; after him is the entrance to Cliff Cave, a small formation that connects this level to the higher ground and the waters below. Before entering, cross the bridge to grab a Revive and battle a Camper who has a Skiploom and Marill, and then head inside.

There are several rare Pokemon inside, as this is the first area in the game where you can find wild Misdreavus, a rare Ghost-type Pokemon who has three useful immunities without a Psychic-type weakness; she can evolve into the even-better Mismagius when you get a Dusk Stone later in the game. Here you might even find wild Steelix, a Pokemon that usually needs to be traded as Onix while holding a Metal Coat to evolve. There are also two ladders: the one on the right takes you down to the shore, where you can Surf to encounter wild Seel and Staryu. If you come down here, there's a Pearl hidden on an tiny island when you Surf east. Also, climb the closer waterfall to find a small patch of grass that houses wild Ditto, Miltank and others; the waterfall on the far west leads to a White Flute, which increase the encounter rate of wild Pokemon. You shouldn't ever need such an item in this game, so feel free to ignore it.

However, to reach the Safari Zone, take the ladder to the left, which brings you upstairs. Go south to reach the overworld again; once outside, you can fight a Double Team who use an Electabuzz and a Magmar. If you head to the west after the couple, you'll cross a short bridge and then a second longer bridge. If you've already talked to Crasher Wake in Celadon's Department Store, he'll be standing on the longer bridge, overlooking the waterfall in the background, which he'll gush about if you speak to him. Go up and right from here and you'll cross a third bridge, where a Lagging Tail is just to the south. Lagging Tail is a pretty useless item that does nothing but makes its holder move last in battle. Keep going north and you'll encounter a Couple with a Cloyster and an Onix just before Route 48.

Route 48 is a stop-gap route that simply bridges Route 47 and the Johto Safari Zone. Follow the path and you'll come across a large patch of tall grass; just west of this grass is an isolated Nugget behind some trees. If you came here immediately after healing Amphy, this is the first area in the game where you can find wild Girafarig and Diglett, the latter of which is not otherwise available until after beating the Elite Four. Wild Tauros and Farfetch'd are also much more common here than in previous areas. Cross the bridge above the tall grass and you'll reach the Safari Zone, where you can visit the Zone and buy Dusk Balls, Net Balls, Quick Balls and vitamins.

After you pick up your Kanto Starter Pokemon from Professor Oak, return to Mr. Pokemon's house on Route 30 and speak to him. He'll give you a different item depending on which Version you're playing: Blue Orb in HeartGold and Red Orb in SoulSilver. To put your new Orb to use, Fly to Cianwood City. Before leaving, make sure you have a Pokemon that knows Surf, Rock Climb and a sleep-inducing move, and have a lot of Ultra, Dusk or Heavy Balls handy, preferably the latter. Head east through Cliff Edge Gate and out onto Route 47. It's time to fight Groudon or Kyogre, depending on which Version you're playing.

Descend Cliff Cave to reach the waters below, which you might have done before if you followed the walkthrough. When you reach the water, Surf west until you find a small sandy island that's just in front of a climbable rock formation. After climbing the first set, examine the stone to your left to find a Stardust, and then ascend the second line of rocks. West of the cave entrance is another patch of rocks you can slide down to find Wave Incense, the item that lets Mantine produce Mantyke eggs. Inside Embedded Tower, you'll find Groudon if you have the Red Orb or Kyogre if you have the Blue Orb. Save your game and talk to them to begin the battle.

Because you can only get the Blue Orb in HeartGold and the Red Orb in SoulSilver, Kyogre and Groudon are version-exclusive Pokemon. However, should you trade for the other one and it originates from HGSS, you can bring it to Professor Oak and he'll give you the Jade Orb. As the name implies, if you return to Embedded Tower with this special item, it allows you to encounter the third member of the Generation III mascot trio: Rayquaza. As usual, you should come equipped with many Dusk or Ultra Balls and a Pokemon who knows a sleep-inducing move and save your file before battling Rayquaza.

Once Steven leaves, follow him to the Pewter Museum . Enter the building to find him viewing one of the exhibits while muttering about the stars in the night sky. When he leaves, follow him back to the Silph Co. building.

Time for a Trade

Speak to him and he asks to trade Pokémon. He is looking for a Forretress , and is willing to part with his Beldum . Beldum can only be found in the Safari Zone , while Forretress are unavailable in the wild and must be evolved from a Pineco . Beldum will eventually evolve into the powerful Metagross , and Steven has given this one a Dawn Stone to hold.

Lugia Emerges from the Waterfall Basin HG

As the player should have received the Silver Wing in Pewter City, proceed to the Whirl Islands to capture Lugia . Lugia will not let itself be caught easily, so be sure to stock up on your favorite type of Poké Ball. Repels, Escape Ropes, and Pokémon with status-inflicting moves, like Spore or Thunder Wave, are also recommended. Fly back to Olivine or Cianwood and sail out into the ocean. Surf and Whirlpool are required to fully explore the islands' underwater cave network; Strength and Flash are helpful, but not necessary.

Whirl Islands

There are many items to be found throughout the caves, but if you are only looking for Lugia, start with the northeast island.

soulsilver safari zone walkthrough

Northwest Island

Step inside the cave, and take the ladder to the floor below.

Walk down the stairway to reach a hidden Pearl to the northeast, and a Full Restore to the south. Jump the ledge and climb the stairway to the east in order to reach a Nugget and a hidden Super Repel . Head east and jump the two ledges to reach a ladder; this leads to a dead-end with an Ultra Ball . Go south, jump another ledge, and backtrack to the first ladder in the northwest corner. Head south along the upper level to reach a Carbos , and climb down the ladder to the southeast.

Grab the Max Elixir and Full Restore from this dead-end area, then use an Escape Rope to exit the cave.

Northeast Island

Walk east, jump the ledge, and take the northern path to reach the next part of the main cavern.

Follow the rock platform southward, collect the hidden Revive , and climb down the ladder to B2F.

Inspect the north wall for a hidden Full Restore , then grab the Max Revive to the west. Speak with the monk, and the Silver Wing suddenly floats up into the air. When he sees the shimmering silver feather, the monk allows you to pass. Step through the archway just south of him to reach a Rare Candy . Continue the climb down the cliffside to reach another archway, where your lead Pokémon retreats into its Poké Ball.

Step inside the waterfall chamber and find Lugia waiting in front of the waterfall. Make sure you save before battling if you are trying to capture, in case Lugia faints.

Start off by using status-inflicting moves, like Spore or Thunder Wave , to wear it down. Follow up with Rock -, Ghost -, Electric -, Ice -, or Dark-type attacks to inflict double the damage. Then slowly chip away at its remaining health with Fighting -, Grass -, or Psychic-type attacks, as moves of these types inflict only half- or quarter-damage. If you happen to knock it out, it will reappear if you again beat the Elite Four.

Southeast Island

Check the northwest corner for a hidden Rare Candy , then take the ladder down to the main cavern.

Head north along the rock ledge to find a Calcium . Go down the stairway and loop around to the west. Search near the south-central ladder for a hidden Ultra Ball , then move the nearby boulder northward. Head west to reach an Escape Rope , then climb the southwest ladder.

Detour across the pool of water to the east to collect another Ultra Ball , then take the exit to emerge on the southwest island.

Southwest Island

The only items accessible from the southwest island are the Escape Rope and the Calcium, both of which would have been collected already.

Ho-Oh Descends to the Bell Tower SS

As the player should have received the Rainbow Wing in Pewter City, proceed to the Bell Tower in Ecruteak City to capture Ho-Oh . Ho-Oh will not let itself be caught easily, so be sure to stock up on your favorite type of Poké Ball. Repels, Escape Ropes, and Pokémon with status-inflicting moves, like Spore or Thunder Wave, are also recommended. Head north from the Dance Theater to reach the Barrier Station. Flash the Fog Badge to reach Bellchime Trail. On the trail, speak to Morty . He will tell you that Ho-Oh did not choose him and asks if you would help him in his training. Add his phone number if you wish to battle him again. Then proceed to the Bell Tower.

As you approach the back of the first floor, the Rainbow Wing suddenly floats up into the air. Seeing the shimmering rainbow feather, the monk finally moves from the ladder.

Go south around the column and climb the ladder.

soulsilver safari zone walkthrough

Go west to reach a Full Heal . Move around in an S-shape to reach the northeast stairs.

Go south to find an Ultra Ball , and south again to get a PP Up . Grab the Escape Rope in the southwest, then climb the northwest stairs.

soulsilver safari zone walkthrough

Work your way to the pillar for a Rare Candy . The ramps here keep you from advancing, so take the southeast stairs and backtrack through 4F. Stay to the west of the pillar to reach the stairs in the south.

6F has a simple layout that serves as a transition between the ramps on the lower floors and what lies above. The next three floors use a series of warp tiles for quick navigation. First grab the Max Potion , then circle around to the northwest corner to get the Full Heal . Take the stairs up to 7F.

soulsilver safari zone walkthrough

Step on the nearest warp tile to reach the pillar, and take the next to reach the east wall of 9F. There are two warp tiles to the south; the right one leads to the center of 8F and a Max Elixir , while the left one leads to the south side of 8F and a Nugget . Backtrack to the first warp on 7F, grab the Max Revive to the northeast, and go south to take the next warp to the west side of 8F.

The next warp takes you to the north side of 9F where you can find an HP Up , and the next warp tile on 9F brings you back to the east side of 8F. Pick up the Full Restore to the northwest and take one last warp to the center of 9F.

Climb the stairs to reach the rooftop.

Climb the golden stairway to reach the tower's rooftop, where Ho-Oh will be waiting for you. Make sure you save before battling if you are trying to capture, in case Ho-Oh faints.

Start off by using status-inflicting moves, like Spore or Thunder Wave , to wear it down. Follow up with Water - or Electric-type attacks to inflict double the damage. Use caution with Rock-type attacks, as Ho-Oh takes four times the normal damage from such moves. Then slowly chip away at its remaining health with Fire -, Grass -, Fighting -, Bug -, or Steel-type attacks, as moves of these types only inflict half- or quarter-damage. If you happen to knock it out, it will reappear if you again beat the Elite Four.

Back in Johto , Mr. Pokémon is thrilled because a friend of his from Hoenn recently brought him a gift. He promptly hands over the glittering stone to you, hoping that you can do more with it than he can. This stone is believed to have some connection to the Embedded Tower , ancient ruins to the west of Cianwood City .

Cianwood City

Cliff edge gate.

soulsilver safari zone walkthrough

Cliff Edge Gate is a cavern that leads to Routes 47 and 48 , and the new Safari Zone beyond that.

soulsilver safari zone walkthrough

Route 47 is a rugged path that links Cliff Edge Gate and Route 48 . Though the route has been accessible for some time now , the difficult terrain prevented those without Waterfall and Rock Climb from fully exploring the area.

soulsilver safari zone walkthrough

Cliff Cave is a small, three-floor cave on the east side of Route 47 . From the entrance, you can either climb to the route's upper level to reach Route 48 and the Safari Zone , or descend to sea level in order to reach the Embedded Tower in the southwest.

Embedded Tower

soulsilver safari zone walkthrough

Near the entrance to the ruins, a Hiker informs you of their history. Ages ago, the Embedded Tower was constructed deep into the cliffside, and its peak was said to touch the sky. It is believed that it also ran far below to the ocean floor, as well. In short, the ruins formed a link between the land , the sea , and the sky . Enter the chamber to find the legendary Pokémon Kyogre HG / Groudon SS silently watching as you approach.

When the battle begins, Kyogre 's Drizzle Ability immediately summons a rainstorm . This raises the power of all Water-type moves by 50%, increases Thunder 's accuracy to 100%, and weakens the power of SolarBeam and all Fire-type moves by 50%. Its Water Spout attack is powerful enough already, but the heavy rain increases its destructive force. Like Groudon 's Eruption , the move weakens when the Pokémon's health falls, but it can remedy this problem with Aqua Ring . Begin with Grass - and Electric-type attacks to wear it down quickly, then switch to Fire , Water , Ice , and Steel moves to weaken it further. Ultra Balls , Dusk Balls , and Heavy Balls are especially useful. If you fail to catch it, defeat the Pokémon League once more to cause it to reappear.

When the battle begins, Groudon 's Drought Ability immediately intensifies the sun's rays . This raises the power of all Fire-type moves by 50%, allows immediate use of SolarBeam , and weakens all Water-type moves by 50%. Its Eruption attack is powerful enough already, but the harsh sunlight increases its destructive force. Like Kyogre 's Water Spout , the move weakens when the Pokémon's health falls, but it can remedy this problem with Rest . Begin with Grass -, Water -, and Ice-type attacks to wear it down quickly, then switch to Rock and Poison moves to weaken it further. Ultra Balls , Dusk Balls , and Heavy Balls are especially useful. If you fail to catch it, defeat the Pokémon League once more to cause it to reappear.

Once the ancient creature has been caught, the Hiker enters and explains a bit more about the Pokémon. He also reveals that the tower was built by travelers from the distant Hoenn region.

Add the ancient Pokémon to your party and pay a visit to Professor Oak . He is amazed that you have caught one of these powerful Pokémon, but he always thinks of Kyogre and Groudon as a pair; wherever one appears, the other must not be far away. Since you have one already, he wonders if you could bring both to him. However, Groudon only shows itself to those with shining-silver spirits, while Kyogre only appears to those with golden hearts. Find a Trainer that matches this description and trade for the second Pokémon. When you show the pair to the professor, he rewards you with the Jade Orb , which calls the third member of the Hoenn myth to the Embedded Tower .

soulsilver safari zone walkthrough

As Rayquaza is related to the other two super-ancient Pokémon, its Ability is also involves the weather; however, Air Lock eliminates the effects of all weather conditions. Its Outrage attack is powerful enough already, but can become even more destructive if AncientPower is able to raise its stats. Begin with Rock - and Dragon-type attacks to wear it down quickly. Ice-type attacks are extremely effective, as well. After that, switch to Grass , Fire , Water , Bug , and Fighting moves to weaken it further. Ultra Balls , Dusk Balls , and Heavy Balls are especially useful. If you fail to catch it, defeat the Pokémon League once more to cause it to reappear.

When presented with the third Pokémon from the Embedded Tower , Professor Oak expresses his wonder at the fascination Pokémon seem to have for orbs and stones.

Pokmon HeartGold & SoulSilver are remakes of the original Gold & Silver games released in 1999 with further aspects which were introduced in Crystal in 2000. These games are set in the Johto & Kanto regions and were released in Japan in September 2009.

As these games are remakes of Gold & Silver, they will feature both Johto & Kanto and follow the storyline of you as a new trainer, going through the gyms of Johto and Kanto, and winding up needing to thwart a Team Rocket plot to takeover the world with their Pokmon.

Even though it will follow closely on the basics of Pokmon Gold & Silver, there are a variety of new features brought into these remakes. Firstly, all the game mechanics are brought up to the 4th generation standards. Second, one of the major new features is that you can have any Pokmon follow you in the games. This way, you can truely personalise your experience. In addition to this, it also includes many aspects from the game Pokmon Crystal such as the Suicune Storyline.

In addition to the areas previously in Johto, there are new areas to be found within Johto such as the brand new Safari Zone . In addition to that, there are non-Johto Pokmon to be found in it including Kyogre in Heart Gold, Groudon in Soul Silver, Rayquaza, Dialga, Palkia & Giratina.

Between HeartGold & SoulSilver, almost all the currently available Pokmon are obtainable, barring most of the legendaries and starters introduced in Pokmon Diamond & Pokmon Pearl.

Heart Gold & Soul Silver is also packaged with a new peripheral; PokWalker , which will allow you to transfer a Pokmon to it to train it up as you walk around your normal life. You can raise a Pokmon by 1 Level in each go with this and you can also capture Pokmon, many of which can only be found between the two games in it.

The games also have introduced the special events the Pokathlon which has you using three of your Pokmon at once to partake in a set of mini-games utilising the DS' Touch Screen. These Pokathlon events can also be played against your friends via the DS' local wireless features.

HeartGold & SoulSilver feature a variety of special areas and Pokmon activated by special event Pokmon including access to the Sinjoh Ruins and a special event in Ilex Forest featuring Celebi .

Following on from Diamond, Pearl & Platinum, HeartGold & SoulSilver feature all the WiFi features that were introduced in the previous three games allowing you to battle and trade between all games.
