ABOUT GUNS N’ ROSES:

Guns N’ Roses endure as the most dynamic, dangerous, and definitive American rock band in history to this day. Embedded in popular culture, their landmark diamond-selling 1987 opus, Appetite For Destruction , stands out as “the best-selling U.S. debut album ever” and “the 11 th best-selling U.S. album of all time, ” while their Not In This Lifetime… Tour (2016-2019) ranked as the “fourth-highest grossing concert tour of all time . ” During 1991, Guns N’ Roses shook the world with the one-two punch of the 7x-platinum Use Your Illusion I and Use Your Illusion II , clinching the top two spots of the Billboard 200 upon arrival. With total sales of 100 million units thus far, their catalog also consists of G N’ R Lies (5x-platinum), The Spaghetti Incident? (platinum), Greatest Hits (5x-platinum), and Chinese Democracy (platinum). Not to mention, they are one of the most-streamed rock bands in the world with an average of 24 million monthly listeners on Spotify. Following the reunion of the century, they headlined Coachella and sold 5 million-plus tickets on the Not In This Lifetime… Tour . However, Guns N’ Roses never stop with more touring on the horizon in 2023 and other surprises—the “Nightrain” keeps rolling at full speed.

Guns N’ Roses are Axl Rose (vocals, piano), Duff McKagan (bass), Slash (lead guitar), Dizzy Reed (keyboard), Richard Fortus (rhythm guitar), Frank Ferrer (drums), and Melissa Reese (keyboard).

Guns N' Roses Announce 2023 Tour Across North America, Europe and Israel — See the Dates!

The rockers last hit North America in 2021

gun and roses tour

Guns N' Roses is hitting the road!

The rockers will embark on a lengthy tour in June that will see them play nearly 40 dates across stadiums, arenas and festivals around the world.

The band — which includes Axl Rose , 61, Duff McKagan , 59, and Slash , 57 — will kick things off in Tel Aviv, Israel on June 5 before heading to Europe for 15 concerts.

On Aug. 5, the "November Rain" rockers will head back to North America for 22 more dates before wrapping in Vancouver on Oct. 16. The band last hit North America in 2021, on its We're F'N Back! Tour.

For longtime fans, the end of each show will look a bit different, as Rose announced in December that he will no longer throw his microphone into the crowd after a fan claimed the move injured her.

"It's come to my attention that a fan may have been hurt at r show in Adelaide Australia possibly being hit by the microphone at the end of the show when I traditionally toss the mic to the fans," he wrote on Twitter.

RELATED VIDEO: Axl Rose, Alanis Morissette and More Deliver Emotional Performances at Lisa Marie Presley's Memorial

He continued: "Having tossed the mic at the end of r show for over 30 years we always felt it was a known part of the very end of r performance that fans wanted and were aware of to have an opportunity to catch the mic. Regardless in the interest of public safety from now on we'll refrain from tossing the mic or anything to the fans during or at r performance."

Rose recently celebrated his birthday with a heartfelt Twitter message to fans that thanked them for their longtime support.

"I'm very fortunate n' privileged to have such great friends, fans n' people in my life!!" he wrote. "I'm extremely grateful for ALL the people I n' Guns n' Roses r privileged to play for n' all those we meet, know n' work with around the world!! I mean that sincerely from the bottom of my heart n' don't take anyone n' their love, friendship n' support along with any of our success for granted!!"

Presale tickets for the tour will be available on Wednesday at 10 a.m. local time, while the general on-sale begins Friday at 10 a.m. local time at gunsnroses.com .

Guns N’ Roses is a lot of things: the ultimate Hollywood success story, the “most dangerous band in the world,” and one of the best-selling rock acts of all time. Formed in 1985 in Los Angeles, California, this hard-rock band’s history is the stuff of legend.

It started with Izzy Stradlin of Hollywood Rose and Tracii Guns of L.A. Guns, who lived together. L.A. Guns needed a new singer, and Stradlin suggested Axl Rose for the job — thereby marking the formation of Guns N’ Roses. The crew also included Rob Gardner on drums and Ole Beich on bass, though Beich was quickly replaced by Duff McKagan, Gardner by Steven Adler, and Guns by guitarist Slash.

The group started rehearsing and recording in anticipation of its first-ever show on March 26, 1985, at the famed Troubadour club in West Hollywood, California. Axl Rose’s aggressive and erratic behavior was both a strength and a liability for the band: it electrified crowds, but also led to fights with bandmates, managers, and public figures.

Yet the band’s presence was undeniable. It became a big deal in Hollywood’s club scene, playing spots like The Roxy and eventually signing on with Geffen Records in March 1986 with a $75,000 advance. It released an EP called Live ?!*@ Like a Suicide as it retreated to the studio to record its debut album. Mike Clink was selected to produce the album, which included tracks like “Sweet Child o’ Mine” and “Nightrain.”

The band’s debut album Appetite for Destruction was released in 1987. Though it took a full year, it reached the number-one spot on the US Billboard 200 chart thanks to the singles “Sweet Child o’ Mine,” “Paradise City,” and “Welcome to the Jungle.” Since then the album has gone on to sell 30 million copies around the world, over half of which were in the United States, which makes Appetite for Destruction the US’ best-selling debut album.

Already known for relentless touring, Guns N’ Roses stepped it up with a 16-month worldwide tour opening for Mötley Crüe, Blue Öyster Cult, Iron Maiden, Aerosmith, and Alice Cooper. Though various members had to miss runs of shows due to broken bones from fistfights, a wedding, and rehab, the tour was successful. By the end of it, Guns N’ Roses was bigger than the headlining acts.

In 1988, it released its second album, G N’ R Lies, which peaked at number two on the US Billboard 200 chart and included the hit “Patience.” This album’s success was mirrored by the band’s subsequent rise in notoriety: It was blasted for offensive lyrics, Axl Rose got into violent fights with security guards backstage, and two fans were crushed to death under a slam-dancing crowd in England. It was then called “the most dangerous band in the world.”

The band’s next release was preceded by the longest tour in rock history, the Use Your Illusion tour, which included nearly 200 dates in 27 countries. The pair of albums, Use Your Illusion I and Use Your Illusion II, came out on September 17, 1991, and debuted at the first and second spots on the US Billboard charts. Its video for “November Rain,” a popular ballad nearly nine minutes long, was one of the most expensive music videos ever made.

The next years were full of turmoil and grandiose rock and roll moments. The band released The Spaghetti Incident? and changed its lineup multiple times. By 1998, Rose and Reid were the only original members still in the band.

Guns N’ Roses’ sixth studio album, Chinese Democracy, came out in 2008 after a decade of work. It is the most expensive rock album in history and debuted on the US Billboard 200 chart at number three. After the expansive tour in promotion of the album, both McKagan and Slash returned to the band in 2016 for the Not in This Lifetime… tour, the third-highest-grossing concert tour in history.

Since then, Guns N’ Roses continues to sell out the world’s biggest venues, making history as it tours across the continents. You can catch it on its own or headlining major festivals around the world, and its recent remastered releases of Appetite for Destruction and Use Your Illusion showcase the hard rock roots that always will drive the band forward.

Live reviews

Axl Rose is the last of his kind; the Mike Tyson of Rock N’ Roll frontmen; an awe-inspiring combination of God-given talent with a killer edge of untamed ferocity and determination borne of a troubled childhood, leaving the young man with an appetite for destruction.

In September 2010, I flew to Paris to attend my first GNR gig. Standing at the front, the stage loomed over me. The house lights went down, the opening chords to the title track of the infamous “Chinese Democracy” played, pyrotechnics fired off… and then I saw him standing over me. After three hours of bearing witness to Axl Rose exorcising demons, I thought I had seen the greatest concert of my life. But just 24 hours later, fortune smiled upon me, and I miraculously gained entry to a semi-acoustic private show for less than 300 people. The voice which had brought an arena to its (sha-na-na-na-na-)knees the night before was overwhelming in the small garden of a club by the Arc de Triomphe.

Since then, I have seen GNR a total of 13 times, across 8 countries and 4 continents. Each and every show has had something special: the surprise appearance of bassist Duff McKagan after 17 years at a gig in London in 2010; guest appearances from GNR co-founder Izzy Stradlin at the same venue two years later; seeing Axl rock a more intimate venue at the House of Blues in Atlantic City; meeting Axl after a show in Glasgow; and fearing death while having the time of my life in a frenzied Argentinian mosh pit.

While there is a top-hat shaped hole in the current GNR line-up, over the years Axl has surrounded himself with gifted guitarists such as Richard Fortus and Bumblefoot, who trade off bluesy riffs and technical virtuosity that complement Axl’s trademark raspy growls and banshee screams.

In this post-Cobain world of irony and self-deprecation, Guns N’ Roses is your last chance to see an unabashedly bombastic and grandiose hard rock concert with a frontman whose ego is only outdone by his talent and passion.

We saw Alice In Chains on June 29th at Arrowhead Stadium in Kansas City.

Guns and Roses started their show at 9:23 pm, sooner than we expected. They played for 2 1/2 hours and ended right at midnight. Their stage was great with bright lights, big screens and pyro. They started out good and strong, and bringing back Slash and Duff made them sound flawless. There was not any idle chatter from Axel Rose in between sets, like some artists do. He might say a couple of sentences trying to get the crowd pumped up. Otherwise they were playing with not more than maybe 15-20 seconds between songs if that. They kept it rolling pretty good. They played old stuff as well as "Chinese Democracy" and "Better".

There were only a couple of things they could work on. First, I thought Axel's voice was starting to give out half way through the concert, but actually it was the sound mixer that didn't properly adjust the microphones. I noticed later that it wasn't just Axel's voice, all of their voices sounded muffled unless they were right up in the mic.

Next, there are some songs they should take out and other songs used. They did not play "Patience", but me and a buddy discussed it and agreed it good they left it out. It really just would have not fit in with the rest of the show and messed up the flow of the music. However they played "Double Talkin Jive", "Estranged" and "Coma". In our opinion these should be taken out. Our thoughts are that these songs while musically strong, the lyrics are sung low and were muffled or drowned out by the music. You could not make out half of the lyrics on those songs. Our picks would have been for them to play "Bad Apples", Dead Horse" and maybe something like "I Used to Love Her".

All in all a great show and would see them again. The sounded better than I thought they would since they had not all been together for over 20 years, but they were Awesome. One the best shows I have ever seen.

I had huge expectations for this show (Lisbon, June 2nd). I'm 26 yo and I've been a fan of GNR ever since I had my first Walkman CD player. For decades I really wanted to see them but the lineup with Axl and some other guys didn't appeal to me. So 3 hours before the show I was already on the venue place with my Golden Circle ticket. A couple of beers, a quick meal and a last trip to the toilet and just before the first opening act I went with my brother (3 years younger, but no less fan of the Guns N' Roses) to get a good spot near the stage. The first band was awesome. Mark Lanegan not so much (he seemed angry with something and seemed to do the show because he had to). And then, "international pop recording muggles" were introduced and show started. From that point to the end it was good beyond belief! Everything from the stage, the production, the setlist, the band and each individual musician was just awesome. The crowd was good too, interacting a lot and showing them we wanted to have fun! I can't even believe I went to a GNR show. I seems to me I have completed one of those tasks I wanted to do before I die! I've been to many rock concerts and this one was by far the best (I had even seen AC/DC with and without Axl). Axl's voice was as powerful as ever. Slash ... I don't need to comment, do I? He does what he does and it's always the coolest thing ever. Duff was awesome. He sang New Rose and played his bass briliantly, rocking a Lemmy t-shirt and a bass with Prince's logo. The other guys were awesome too! Richard Fortus played a lot of solos and showed he was having a blast the whole show. The drummer was always there. Dizzy Reed and Melissa Reese were awesome too. The show was the full package. I'm really glad I went!

Guns N Roses at Tottenham Stadium July 1st - great support and amazing headliners ruined by delays and far worse for this paying customer - appalling sound in the venue. By chance our entry gate (23) was a frictionless breeze and we were in the stadium in minutes. Friends entering using other gates (18) were not so lucky and queued for long periods missing all the support. The stadium is amongst the best I have ever seen, the facilities were varied and very efficient and all the staff I interacted with were friendly and helpful. That's the sum of the good points...

Gary Clark Jr's set was so quiet and generally muffled it was drowned out by normal volume conversations around our standing area, stage right by the VIP standing area. The issue was so bad when Guns took the stage I considered leaving, luckily the crowd was able to communicate their frustration to the band and not once but twice repeatedly chanted 'turn it up!'. Axl Rose acknowledged the issue both times, can't help thinking someone is going to feel that later... The problem was improved, though not solved by turning up Slash's guitar but Axl's vocals remained virtually lost in the background. Such as shame as the band really smashed it but we were deprived of the full experience. The stadium delays came back to haunt us - that was the shortest set Guns have played in recent history, significant tracks omitted from the setlist. Paying over £100 for a ticket for this kind of amateurism is galling for fans and embarrassing for the band. Whatever the stadium is taking from ticket sales should be refunded back to fans.

I was very, very unhappy. I have been to hundreds of rock concerts in many different venues and always get GA tickets. GA tickets often have seat numbers but rarely do they actually have seats. They only put seat numbers on the tickets to keep track of how many people have tickets on the GA floor. I am very short and so need to be in the front row and so I got in line at 2pm to ensure my ability to see the show. I stood in line (with a group of other avid rock fans) for 4.5 hours waiting for the doors to open and when we got in, there were actual assigned seats on the GA floor!! I was in row J behind hundreds of other people and couldn't even see the TV screens. I truly believe that venues should be required to put a disclaimer on events that will actually have assigned seating on the GA floor!! I wouldn't have purchased tickets if I had known there would be and venues know that. They know it will affect ticket sales for us to be told and so they do not disclose the intent to add chairs to GA. I was so disappointed! I ended up leaving early and being quite upset due to the way that was handled. Plus, those employees let me stand in line for almost 5 hours knowing full well that there was no need. The only reason to get in line so early is to ensure a front row spot for the show. They knew we had assigned seats in GA and said nothing!! How unbelievably rude of them.

Tickets will NOT SELL OUT. Last show here started at midnight, the one before at 2:46am Last show was a AAA arena in downtown. It was not full. Tickets outside were 10 dollars. The August 8 venue is a huge stadium.. With what the locals know from the past they are staying away or going to get the tons of free tickets from the radio stations that are handing them out by the boatloads or just show up and get a ticket outside for next to nothing. A SHOW IS NEVER SOLD OUT! I will tell that this time the band will go on stage on time because Axel had to put up most of the money because promoters all backed away from this tour. After this tour the public will know the band is serious because people in each and every town will hear from others or see it themselves that now they are going on stage on time and putting on a 3 plus hour show that will blow their minds. Expect by the next tours for Guns N' Roses to be the biggest grossing Rock band in this decade. In the end there will only be Metallica and Guns N' Roses because of their age, their talent, and their stamina. Regardless of what you pay you will get more than your money's worth at these shows now that Slash is back and only a handfull of bands play 3 hours.

It was great o see the Guns N' Roses live the atmosphere was cool and the venue convenient but...

When they played the first song the sound was horrible, I was not able to recognize the song, the melody nor understand the lyrics, with time it became better but still. Sometimes Axl voice was too low, sometimes his voice was disappearing to come as a high pitch - it sounded as they would play from a record and then somebody in the background try to sing but couldn't hear the melody

Observing the crowd I would say people were little bit confused, it was not crazy atmosphere as I was expecting.

I was also surprised that the "Golden circle" was filled to the borders of capacity... I would say I expect a little bit more from a premium ticket.

The real cherry on the cake was the final - people went really crazy - as they played the most known hits, the fireworks, the visualizations and confetti was really nice finishing touch.

Overall I was happy I dient pay the full price for the ticket (it was super expensive) but you need to give them the credit it was their first concert so ... 6 out of 10 for me.

That's a great performance with stage, sound, lightening, video graphic, and finally they're back the 3 original member Axl, Duff, and Slash since almost 24 years ago I saw them be together again. the concert which lasted almost 3 hours did not make them lose their enthusiasm to entertain us, even though they were already half a century more. some of the best songs like It's So Easy, Mr. Brownstones, Welcome To The Jungle, Civil War, You Could Be Mine, Sweet Child O' Mine, Patience, Knocking On Heaven's door Making Rock the whole of GBK stadium. They closed the show titled "Not In This Lifetime" with encore song "Paradise City". At the end of song Axl say "Thank You Jakarta, Indonesia, See You again" and then he threw the microphone towards the audience, and not long afterwards all the band members gathered and bowed down as a thank you. some of the band members such as slash and duff distributed guitar picks to the audience as a memento. previously the band had performed in Jakarta in 2012 but without slash and duff, so did slash who had also performed solo in Jakarta with his band then in 2010.

The performance by GNR was great and I had a good, but not great time. The venue had so many problems from start to finish. Though some of it had to do with impolite fans, much could have been prevented by a more efficient a capable staff. On arrival, I approached a supervisor about needing a wheel chair as I had called a few days before and was told they are present at all the entrances. It took 35 minutes to get a wheel chair. The young man who pushed the wheel chair was very good. I got to my seat that I had bought because it was supposed to have a clear view of the stage looking down a six foot wide aisle. It took the staff about 1/3 of the concert to get the aisle relatively clear, but the the staff stood in the middle of the aisle blocking the view. When the concert concluded about 11:30PM, the same young man took me all the way to the Uber lot. That's where the biggest problem began. The Miami police didn't have a clue at directing traffic. It took me until 1:15AM to get an Uber and I got home at almost 2:AM. I doubt if I will ever go to another concert at Marlin's Park.

Absolutely fuckin' awesome!! By the time we got there Wolfmother was just starting, they were wicked! Then before long out comes the Gunners. Everyone was cheering and screaming, it was great to see everyone so united. They were so full of energy the whole time, lightning fast costume changes, amazing songs, great atmosphere, oh man it was amazing. Such a dream come true. Slash was outstanding as usual, the man is crazy talented! The rest of the lads were perfect and Axl hit all the right notes. Couldn't have been a more perfect night. The shirts were so cool, made it almost impossible to pick one and the program had the most amazing pictuers in it!

God, there's only one thing I would change... I'd make Slash say something haha, I just would have like to hear his cool voice say "Hi Adelaide!" Or something like that. But not a big deal that he didn't say anything, his guitar playing says more than words ever could.

I LOVED it!! Thanks to the lads from Gunners and everyone behind the scenes for such a good night. Flawless, absolutely fuckin' flawless!

Guns N’ Roses Announce Huge 2023 World Tour

Back to prove there's no such thing as too much of a good thing, Guns N' Roses have just announced a huge 2023 world tour.

It's been seven years since Slash and Duff McKagan simultaneously rejoined the group and Guns N' Roses remain one of the biggest (and one of the most lucrative ) concert draws in the world with Axl Rose , Dizzy Reed , Richard Fortus , Frank Ferrer and Melissa Reese rounding out the lineup.

This year has already been quite notable for GN'R and Rose, especially when it comes to the  Use Your Illusion   I  hit song "November Rain." At Lisa Marie Presley 's memorial service, Rose performed a vocal and piano rendition of the track and, three weeks later, the "November Rain" YouTube video surpassed two billion views , becoming the first '90s rock song to achieve that milestone.

Looking Back At Guns N’ Roses Historic Tour With Alice Cooper

gun and roses tour

In a recent interview with Appetite For Distortion, esteemed guitarist Kane Roberts shared a glimpse of the past, recalling a significant moment during the iconic 1987 Guns N’ Roses tour supporting Alice Cooper. A candid Kane shed light on a memorable photo shoot involving himself, Alice Cooper, and the burgeoning rock sensations of Guns N’ Roses.

Reflecting on the impromptu photoshoot, Roberts noted, “I think that photoshoot just started to gestate somehow on the road, and it was very quick. And Alice just said, ‘Hey, Kane! Come on, we’re going to do a photoshoot.’ That’s all it was.” Regarding the absence of other Alice Cooper Band members in the picture, Kane clarified, “It wasn’t like a ‘I don’t want the rest of the band in it.’ It’s basically what the function of this thing was in his mind. We both wanted to take pictures with him. You know, Steven Adler, all those guys. They’re just f**king great people. So, that’s how it happened.”

According to Rock Celebs – Looking back on that memorable night, he emphasized the spontaneity of the music scene during those times. Kane shared, “I don’t want anybody to think there was some – A lot of times on the road, there aren’t these meticulously worked out decisions that are made to make sure that we hit the right demographic. It’s chaos, you know. So, that’s how that night ended up.”

When discussing the vibrant era, Kane debunked any notion of disruptions during shows, asserting, “At that time and still now, the center of everything that they do, the most important thing, was music. That’s what it was.”

Guns N’ Roses, a vital part of Cooper’s Appetite For Destruction Tour in 1987, embarked on a musical journey together that continued with collaborations on Guns N’ Roses’ third studio album, ‘Use Your Illusion I.’ Even decades later, the legacy of that collaboration endures, with ‘The Garden’ track featured on Classic Rock’s ‘50 greatest Guns N’ Roses songs ever’ list in June 2023.

Alice Cooper, reflecting on that significant tour, expressed how they served as mentors to Guns N’ Roses during their formative years, stating, “We took Guns N’ Roses on their first tour, and the very first night, after they played, I told my band: ‘We’d better be very good tonight.’ They had the attitude, the sound, the swagger. I had to send somebody out for bail money on that tour because one or two of them were in jail. So we were kinda like their big brothers, and they knew they could call me any time.”

Duff McKagan has announced a solo US tour that will commence towards the end of 2024, ahead of his fall tour in the UK and Europe .

The Guns N’ Roses bassist shared the news on social media yesterday (May 31) with a video statement, where he also announced the release of his concert video Tenderness: Live From Los Angeles on YouTube. See tour dates and watch the film below.

The film was captured in 2019 while McKagan was on tour with his live band – which includes country star Shooter Jennings – at Los Angeles’ El Rey Theatre. McKagan was in support of his second solo album ‘Tenderness’, released the same year.

On this forthcoming 2024 tour, which supports his 2023 effort ‘Lighthouse’, McKagan will return to the same Los Angeles venue on November 13.

Tenderness: Live From Los Angeles will also be issued on vinyl and CD on June 28, with pre-orders live on his official merch store .

The tour dates for Duff McKagan’s 2024 US tour are:

NOVEMBER 4 – Boston, Massacussetts – The Paradise Rock Club 6 – New York, New York – Le Poisson Rouge 8 – Chicago, Illinois – Outset 10 – Denver, Colorado – The Bluebird 13 – Los Angeles, California – El Rey Theatre 18 – Portland, Oregon – Aladdin Theater 20 – Seattle, Washington – The Showbox

Pre-sale tickets go live via Ticketmaster on Tuesday (June 4) with the code “CHORD”. General tickets go on sale on Friday (June 7).

Prior to this US tour, McKagan will embark on a tour in UK and Europe, which will begin on September 30 at the Dublin Academy in Ireland.

‘Lighthouse’, which is his third album following 1993’s ‘Believe In Me’ and 2019’s ‘Tenderness’, featured guest appearances by Iggy Pop , Alice In Chains guitarist Jerry Cantrell, and longtime Guns N’ Roses bandmate Slash , among others.

In March, McKagan shared how Iggy Pop helped him through a “bad mushroom trip” when he was a teenager. “I went to an Iggy show way too high on mushrooms, thinking I was going to have to go to the hospital, freaking out,” he said on a podcast.

“I just watched Iggy the whole, just tripping way too much on psychedelics. But he brought me down. And I was already a big Iggy fan, but then I was like, he means more to me. He’s a waypoint for me in my life.”

MATT SORUM Says He Looks At His Exclusion From GUNS N' ROSES Reunion Differently Now: 'I'm Not Supposed To Be There'

In a new interview with Chasta and Baby Huey of San Francisco Bay Area's 107.7 The Bone radio station, Matt Sorum reflected on his time as the drummer for GUNS N' ROSES . The 63-year-old musician, who replaced Steven Adler in the Axl Rose -fronted outfit, said in part (as transcribed by BLABBERMOUTH.NET ): "It was chaotic. It was crazy. Of course, Axl was late [going on stage] sometimes. Who cares? That was the energy. If people complained, by the time he came on stage, it was just on — game on.

"I say to people, what was going on backstage was causing a lot of emotional sort of angst in a punk rock way," Sorum continued. "Some of us were angry — I could say me included. We were like, 'Where is he?' Like, but once we got up there, we were, like, 'Ahhhh.' And talk about taking it all out — we did. And you asked me before, what would it be like to be in the same band? And that's something I thought about. And I always say to like Tré Cool from GREEN DAY or something. I said, ' Tré , man, it's like you got the same band and the same guys. And how does that feel? And it's only three guys, so you split the money three ways. That's cool.' [ Laughs ]"

Matt went on to say that he is thankful that he got an opportunity to play with GUNS N' ROSES when he did. "I had that moment with the band, and it's really shaped and formed my life and a lot of doors have opened because of it," he explained. "So I look at it with a lot of gratitude. When people ask me, 'Oh, you're not included in the new [ GUNS N' ROSES ] tour.' And I've said, in the beginning, it was a little weird. I was, like, I didn't even get a call [asking me to be a part of it]. But now I look at it different. I look at it like how I explained before: I'm not supposed to be there. I got a child. I got a beautiful wife. The old me, the old Matt, the old guy, if I got up there, I don't know what would happen to me. I don't know."

Sorum added that a lot of great opportunities have come his way as a result of his association with GUNS N' ROSES . "I still get a lot of accolades and I always get these weird fringe benefits — still, 30 years later," he said. "I have businesses because of it. I do other things philanthropically. I'm able to put the word out because I'm the guy from that band. ' Rock And Roll Hall Of Fame GUNS N' ROSES drummer has charity for kids,' it gets press because I'm the guy from that band, and played on the records and some of the songs — a lot of the songs. So, all that being said, I'm in a really good place. So. what's happening with me now is I've got a lot of businesses and philanthropic work and then I do [my all-star rock collective] KINGS OF CHAOS for fun."

Three years ago, Matt revealed in his book "Double Talkin' Jive: True Rock 'N' Roll Stories" that he learned of the 2016 partial reunion of GUNS N' ROSES ' classic lineup via the rumor mill even though he was on a South American tour with Slash and Duff McKagan when the Internet chatter first reached him. After he confronted Duff , the bassist told him: " Axl [ Rose , GUNS N' ROSES frontman] wants to use his drummer [ Frank Ferrer ]." "Go to Axl and tell him you want me on drums," Sorum responded. "Period. Now's the time." "Oh, man," Duff replied. "I already signed the deal."

Sorum told Rolling Stone in a 2021 interview that he had gotten over the fact that he will probably never play with GUNS N' ROSES again. "I've come to terms with the fact that they're doing their own thing, and I'm doing mine," he said. "I can't say that when it went down, I was completely happy with the circumstances. At the same time, I feel really good about my time in the band."

Asked why he thinks he wasn't invited on the reunion tour, Matt said: "I think Axl is a loyal guy. He likes his band he's had for a long time. He didn't look at it that way. … If anyone in that band is loyal, it's probably him. He was like, 'I'm going to bring my guy [ Frank Ferrer ]. If I get Slash , that's cool. If I get Duff , that's cool too. And that's enough.' That's how it went down, and that's what they're doing."

Matt also told Rolling Stone that he was invited to appear as a guest on the GUNS N' ROSES reunion tour but that he didn't do it because there was no money involved. Asked if he would show up and do it if he was approached about it again, he said: "I guess I'd have to wait until that call comes to make that decision. I have a lot of different things going on in my life… I'm a busy guy. It's gotta be what works with my life. I feel really good about my time in the band. And I always thank GUNS N' ROSES for my legacy going forward."

GN'R 's hugely successful reunion features Rose , Slash and McKagan alongside Ferrer , keyboardist Dizzy Reed , guitarist Richard Fortus and second keyboardist Melissa Reese .

Sorum recorded the GUNS N' ROSES albums "Use Your Illusion I" and "Use Your Illusion II" (both 1991) and "The Spaghetti Incident" (1994). He also supported the group on the "Use Your Illusion" tour and can be heard on GUNS N' ROSES ' "Live Era: '87-'93" (1999) and "Greatest Hits" (2004).

Matt was among the GUNS N' ROSES members who were inducted into the Rock And Roll Hall Of Fame in April 2012. He, Adler , Slash and McKagan attended the ceremony, while Rose and founding guitarist Izzy Stradlin stayed home.

Sorum told The Pulse Of Radio in a 2009 interview that if the classic GUNS N' ROSES band reunited, they should perform with both him and Adler . "If it's me on drums or Steven or whatever, if it happened, it'd be great, you know," he said. "I would actually say to them, 'Hey, bring both of us back,' you know. Let me play the other stuff. We'll have two drum kits. I don't care. If 'Appetite [For Destruction]' [the band's debut] sounds better with Steven playing it, have both guys up there. They can afford it."

Back in 2018, Izzy blamed his non-involvement with the GUNS N' ROSES reunion tour on the fact that he and the other guys in the band were unable "to reach a happy middle ground through the negotiation process." He also previously claimed that he stepped away from the reunion because the band didn't want to "split the loot equally."

"Double Talkin' Jive: True Rock 'N' Roll Stories" came out in September 2021 via Rare Bird Books .

Slash talks new music, making ‘Appetite for Destruction,’ Allman Brothers influence

  • Updated: May. 31, 2024, 7:26 p.m. |

Slash has always been a rock-and-roller with the soul of a bluesman. Four decades after “Appetite for Destruction,” the Guns N’ Roses guitar legend is wearing his soul on his sleeve.

His excellent new solo album “Orgy of the Damned” is a hot tight set of bluesy covers of artists like Muddy Waters, Albert King, Robert Johnson and Stevie Wonder.

Over live-in-the-studio badassery by Slash and his band, guest vocalists from AC/DC frontman Brian Johnson and Bad Company/Free icon Paul Rodgers to country superstar Chris Stapleton and pop powerhouse Demi Lovato howl at the moon. Mike Clink -- the studio genius who helped make the classic “Appetite,” “GN’R Lies” and “Use Your Illusion” records -- produced “Orgy of the Damned.”

During GN’R’s late ‘80s ascension, Slash’s bluesy feel is what set his guitar playing apart from the shred-happy hordes. No wonder. He’s loved the blues even longer than he’s been playing guitar. At an early age, Slash’s grandmother introduced him to the music of B.B. King, adding to the musical foundation Slash got from his parents’ The Who and Kinks records.

There are many great guitarists. What sets Slash apart, addition to his melodic sense, is he’s equally great at making one long note feel as blistering as shredding and making shredding soulful as one note. As the son of a white English album-cover artist and Black American stage costume designer, Slash grew up around creatives balancing complexity and simplicity in their work.

It’s easy to get into “Orgy of the Damned.” The music’s cool. The album title -- a play on blues being “The Devil’s music” -- is cool. The cover art -- a sultry juke-joint tableau by Toni Greis -- looks cool.

Famously fast-living back in the day, Slash has been clear-headed for many years now. “Orgy of the Damned” is surely one of the best party records ever made by a sober, certifiable rock god.

Besides an arthouse version of Lightnin’ Hopkins’ “Awful Dream” with proto-punk Iggy Pop on the mic, the songs Slash covers here are mostly well-known classics. But Slash didn’t make this album for obscurities-obsessed musicologists. The world’s most recognizable living guitar hero made “Orgy of the Damned” to bring blues back to the masses.

This summer, Slash will be touring the “Orgy of the Damned” material on his new S.E.R.P.E.N.T. Festival . The Rock & Roll Hall of Famer’s taking out a rotating lineup of bluesy artists, including the likes of Warren Haynes, Christone “Kingfish” Ingram , Jackie Venson and Samantha Fish as openers.

The tour launches July 5 at Montana’s KettleHouse Amphitheater. Here in Alabama, S.E.R.P.E.N.T. Festival comes to Huntsville’s Orion Amphitheater August 13 with Robert Randolph, Larkin Poe and ZZ Ward in tow.

For his headlining sets, Slash’s band is the same musicians who anchor “Orgy of the Damned”: keyboardist Teddy “ZigZag” Andreadis, drummer Michael Jerome, bassist Johnny Griparic, singer/guitarist Tash Neal. In the “Use Your Illusion” era, Andreadis was a touring musician with GN’R. Andreadis and Griparic were also members of Slash’s ‘90s live side-project Blues Ball, which covered some songs revisited on “Orgy of the Damned.”

On a recent afternoon, Slash and I connect on a video call. In conversation, he’s as articulate and heartfelt as his guitar-playing.

Checking in from his hometown of Los Angeles, shelves displaying dinosaur-related collectibles are visible on the wall behind Slash. He’s wearing mirrored aviators, black tee, necklaces and bracelets, and a backwards cap over his curly black locks.

The interview’s to promote Slash’s new solo album and tour, so in advance his publicist tells me no GN’R questions. But the band that made him famous, and with whom he’s been enjoying a highly successful reunion since 2016, comes up naturally in some of Slash’s responses to my questions. Edited excerpts below.

In addition to your headlining set, I was curious if, one, is there’s anything interesting you’re planning for the shows on this tour? Maybe some opening acts sitting-in with you and your band, or you popping-up during some opening sets to play a song. And two, anything cool about the tour’s stage design or production?

Slash: OK, so the jamming part is so wide-open. There’s nothing like, “Oh, we’re gonna do this, this and this,” specifically at this point, I just know there’s going to be a lot of it. And I’m also expecting in in different places, having guests from the record come up and singing. But it’s all very loose at this stage.

As far as the stage is concerned, nothing super complicated about the stage. It’s just, you know, there’ll be a big backdrop and all that kind of stuff, but no flash plots or anything -- not that I know of, anyway. [Laughs]

Speaking of singers on the record, I always thought you and Chris Robinson from The Black Crowes would be a good fit. And I don’t know if you remember this, in like ‘90 in New York you sat in with The Crowes and played a Jimmy Reed song together …

Yeah, I do remember that -- fuzzy, but I remember.

On the opening track on your new album “Orgy of the Damned,” Chris Robinson sings on the cover of “The Pusher” by Steppenwolf. Got a cool story about picking Chris for that track or recording with him?

Yeah, there’s a whole thing to that. Chris is one of my favorite singers, right, and he and I met way back when The Crowes first sort of came to L.A., and we hung out those guys then and we loved them and so on.

But we’ve known each other all these years. And I’ve jammed with [ Crowes guitarist] Rich [Robinson , Chris’ brother] before, and we, you know, have a relationship, but I hadn’t seen either of those guys in a really long time.

And when I was putting this record together, and I wanted to do “The Pusher” and I decided I’m gonna get different singers, Chris was the first person I thought of. And so I got in touch with him, and I told him about it, and he was like, “Oh yeah, man. Love that song.” I could tell he was genuinely inspired by the idea of doing it.

So I have a studio in L.A., a small little studio, and I made a date with him to come down and sing it. And he showed up, him and his girlfriend [now wife], and he brought his harp [blues-speak for “harmonica”], and he f---ing just belted it out.

He only did two takes and they were both sort of different approaches, and that was the first thing that he did. That’s what’s on the record. And he did it live with the harp, so there was no overdubs or any of that. So it was really cool, and then, he and I’ve been really close since then.

The reason it’s the first song on the record is because that was the best song to f---ing hit you in the face with. It’s not even a blues track, really, when you think about it. It’s more of an old school rock and roll song, but it was just the best way to open that record.

I like how your approach to making a blues record was the blues is amorphous and not confined to certain parameters, because I think that’s what the blues is. And besides getting excited about all the singers that guest on here, seeing Mike Clink’s name involved also got me excited. People who really know your career and really know rock and roll know he has helped make some magic. What is Mike Clink’s magic as a producer?

Well, OK, Mike -- and this is all goes all the way back to when Guns N’ Roses first met him back in I guess 1986 or ‘87 -- he is a producer, but he’s not an intrusive, overbearing producer. He doesn’t want to try and take his ideas, his style, and his whatever and put it on the band and make the band conform to that, like say Mutt Lange or somebody like that. He hears the band, and he knows how to capture the band’s high points, you know, and get that without having really to say much.

And then the other thing about Mike is that he is an amazing [audio recording] engineer. He was such a great engineer working with … I’m trying to think of the f---ing producer’s name that did like Heart and UFO -- it will come to me. [That producer’s name is Ron Nevison.] So he really got great engineering chops.

So when Mike first recorded Guns N’ Roses, we’d recorded with a couple of different people at that point, trying to find a producer, he came in and we did a song called “Shadow of Your Love” with him. And he just captured what the band sounds like but made us sound like that much more professional just because of a good recording, and then just let us fly. And we loved him ever since that.

“Appetite for Destruction” has a lot of Mike Clink on it with you knowing that it’s Mike Clink -- you know what I mean? It sounds like Guns N’ Roses, and Guns N’ Roses sounds great on that record, you know. That’s us playing but he really knew how to make it sound nice, like a good version of us, I guess.

And he knows how to get a f---ing guitar sound, too, which is dying art right now. It has been for a while. It’s been dying a slow death I’d say ever since the ‘90s.

But anyway, so with Mike, I did one solo record with him, but the reason I don’t record with him all the time is because there’s always that Guns N’ Roses with like any hard-rock thing that I would do, you know.

But in this context, I was like the guy who could really capture this particular outfit and get these sounds as honest and pure and raw as I want them and make them sound good, is Mike Clink. And he did exactly that.

We recorded all the music live in the studio and with a minimal amount of takes. I mean, we had a couple of weeks of rehearsal to get the arrangements together, went in the studio and just played. And he captured it. He knows exactly how he wants to get the drums exactly how he wants to mike the guitars and just lets us play and makes it sound good. [Laughs]

Yeah, Mike Clink makes raw sound aerodynamic …

It’s hard to put a word on it. It’s raw and it’s real, but at the same time it sounds really good. It sounds professional, but it still has the heart and soul to it, so it doesn’t sound produced too much.

One of my favorite moments on the album is the version of [T-Bone Walker song] “Stormy Monday.” You play this intro that’s kind of flamenco-flecked, maybe a little bit of [Led Zeppelin’s] “Since I’ve Been Loving You” in there, too. And then Beth Hart just destroys the vocals. There’s even a cool kind of modulation in the arrangement at the end. One, did you improvise that intro? And two, got a good story from cutting that one?

Yeah, let’s get into it. [Laughs] The whole recording of that song and the whole arrangement is interesting. The actual beginning I did twice because I had those [improvised notes] and then I heard a melody thing – I said, “I gotta go back and do this thing I heard.” So that took two takes.

But the actual song itself, when we first started doing it was based off of the Etta James live version, which I think is from the ‘60s. And when I talked to Beth about doing it, she goes, “Yeah, I’d love to do it. But what if we did it in a minor key?” And I went, “Oh … Well that would be a whole different trip, but it would be cool.”

So the band got together -- she hadn’t come into the picture yet, physically come in [to the studio] -- and we worked out a minor arrangement. And then while we were doing that Ted the keyboard player goes, “Well, how about if we modulate at the end back into the original major key?” And so I said, “Oh that’s a great idea.” So we worked all that out.

We did that in the 11th hour of pre-production, so we went into the studio to record the song. We didn’t really know it that well, yeah, right. And Beth is supposed to come down, so we go to rehearse it – we figure, we’ll rehearse a couple times and Beth can sing it.

She was [already] in the studio, and we didn’t even know. So we started to play, and she just started singing, and I didn’t know she was behind me, and I was like, “Oh, f--- …” It was really sort of like flying by the seat of our pants, everybody looking to make sure that the changes were right, and we have that modulation thing and all that. And then also to know where she is gonna go, because she sings sort of loose, and we didn’t know where she was going to land all the time.

And so it was really sort of like a very impromptu take – it was the only take we did. When she was done, she collapsed on the floor, she said what she had to say at the end [”Oh god, that was f---ing badass shit”], which we kept. She was done for the day. She’d put everything she had into that take and that was it.

And that’s why we kept the candid stuff at the end, so you could really sort of get an idea of what that whole energy was like. I didn’t know this until afterwards, she had just come back from Jeff Beck’s memorial, and she landed and came straight to the studio. So she was super emotional. [Hart and Beck had collaborated both on stage and studio.] And it was one of those almost lightning in a bottle of moments.

Well, you all captured it. I got hip to that song “Stormy Monday” back in the day from the Allman Brothers . [Allmans singer/guitarist] Dickey Betts recently passed , and I always heard an echo of the Allman Brothers’ melodic blues in your playing. Do you have any thoughts on Dickey and his passing?

All right, so Dickey was amazing. And it’s really sad that we lost him recently – it really hit home – but as a player, man, he was a f---ing monster.

The thing was the Allman Brothers had a big influence on me without me really knowing that I was influenced by the Allman Brothers, because I was like a hard-rock guy and that was sort of a Southern kind of thing. But the melodic sensibility of what those guys did stuck with me, and it really put a stamp on my playing without me even knowing it.

So now, when I listened to Dickey Betts, I hear me. I hear his playing on my stuff all the time. But it was all very, very what you call subconscious. I don’t think I ever sat down and physically learned any Dickey stuff, you know, or even Duane [Allman, the influential late Allman Brothers guitarist]. But that sound was so prominent that it just influenced me without me even really paying attention.

Now, I’m a huge Dickey Betts fan like in earnest, like I listen to his shit and I know everything note-for-note and I pay attention. But yeah, it was big.

Back to the upcoming tour, whenever I’ve seen your shows, back in the day with GN’R, then with Velvet Revolver and then back on the first solo tour with Myles [Kennedy, singer with Slash’s rock solo band, The Conspirators], you’ve always been set-up on stage-left. You, Joe Perry, Jimmy Page, Keith Richards, a lot of guitar players I’m drawn to are on stage-left. Is it so you can see the snare better, since a lot of drummers are righthanded?

You know, it would make sense. Because the relationship to the drums is big for every guitar player that you just mentioned, including myself. [Laughs] So that would make total sense.

I think I ended up there just because all my favorite guitar players maybe were on that side -- I don’t know why I ended up on that side. But it was definitely like, “Oh, I’m just naturally going to be on this side, and Izzy [Stradlin, classic-era GN’R rhythm guitarist] is gonna be over there [on stage-right].”

But I’m sure that all those guys before me, one of them started out with just paying attention to the drums, and that’s where it came from.

A blues album is something you’ve wanted to do for a while, and now that’s finally fit into your bandwidth and scheduling. Is there something else you’ve never gotten around to do in your career that you’ve always wanted to do?

There’s stuff, I mean, I can’t think of off the top of my head. Right now, I’m so in the moment, and with the blues thing it is exactly that, because it’s been sort of percolating in my mind. I’m in the midst of this still, because we’re about to do the tour, and I’m putting the songs together for the set and all that.

So I haven’t been thinking much beyond that. I’m working on some [film] scores stuff for a couple movie projects, which has been something that I’ve been slowly really getting into.

But other than that, I can’t say that I’ve got anything else -- besides pedal steel, I’m working on that. [Slash makes his recorded debut on pedal steel guitar -- a country music instrument also used by some rock by like Zeppelin’s Page and The Rolling Stones’ Ron Wood – on “Orgy of the Damned” closing track “Metal Chestnut,” an instrumental and the album’s lone original composition.]

That’s my obsession at the moment. And I don’t know what I’m gonna do with it, but I just love the instrument. I’m digging learning how to play [pedal steel] because it’s such a complex thing. You can do so many amazing things with it once you get a handle on it -- getting a handle on it, that’s the hard part.

Two or three hours a day, at least, are dedicated to learning [to play pedal steel guitar]. And that came out of something that was in the back of my mind too. Like I always wanted to do it and finally broke down and went and bought a use one, and so that’s been going on for last couple of years, so there’s one thing.

Any surprises in your setlists for this tour? What are you going to play in addition to all the stuff on “Orgy of the Damned?”

There’s gonna be a lot of cool shit in the set, but I’m not going to tell you the names of songs and stuff. But the set, you know, there’s a lot of cool blues stuff that’s not on the record. The record will be on there. But we’ve got a full hour and 45 [minutes] or whatever it is to cover, so there’s a bunch of really cool blue stuff that covers a pretty wide gamut of artists, from Rory Gallagher to B.B. King in the set.

And then there’s also some more sort of R&B stuff, so it’s gonna be cool. Definitely some surprises, and I’m gonna bring the pedal steel. I’m not gonna name the song in case that particular song is not the one that we ended up doing – I’m pretty sure it is – but there’s a really cool slow blues that’s I’m gonna use the pedal steel for.

During your career, you’ve worked with a ton of great singers, including on this record. But I’ve always wondered if anybody, whether it was like a producer or management or colleague, tried to talk you into or suggest maybe you should sing as well as play guitar, a la Jimi Hendrix?

OK, when I was in high school and just after high school, I had a hard time finding singers. Trying to find somebody who really can genuinely sing rock and roll is … it’s not easy.

And so I got frustrated at one point and started singing myself. And so I can sing. I have a what you call a very sort of gruff rock and roll voice, you know, but I can sing in key, so it works. But it’s not my personality. It freaks me out to look anybody in the eye even if I’m playing guitar -- you know, you hide behind the guitar.

So for me, to write a lyric, which a lyric has to have some emotional content in it, and then you communicate that to an audience to sing your song, f---k, I can’t even approach that wholeheartedly. I’m way too introverted to do it. [Laughs] So it’s come up a few times in passing, you know, but it’s not something that I can imagine doing.

Coordinates of elektrostal in degrees and decimal minutes, utm coordinates of elektrostal, geographic coordinate systems.

WGS 84 coordinate reference system is the latest revision of the World Geodetic System, which is used in mapping and navigation, including GPS satellite navigation system (the Global Positioning System).

Geographic coordinates (latitude and longitude) define a position on the Earth’s surface. Coordinates are angular units. The canonical form of latitude and longitude representation uses degrees (°), minutes (′), and seconds (″). GPS systems widely use coordinates in degrees and decimal minutes, or in decimal degrees.

Latitude varies from −90° to 90°. The latitude of the Equator is 0°; the latitude of the South Pole is −90°; the latitude of the North Pole is 90°. Positive latitude values correspond to the geographic locations north of the Equator (abbrev. N). Negative latitude values correspond to the geographic locations south of the Equator (abbrev. S).

Longitude is counted from the prime meridian ( IERS Reference Meridian for WGS 84) and varies from −180° to 180°. Positive longitude values correspond to the geographic locations east of the prime meridian (abbrev. E). Negative longitude values correspond to the geographic locations west of the prime meridian (abbrev. W).

UTM or Universal Transverse Mercator coordinate system divides the Earth’s surface into 60 longitudinal zones. The coordinates of a location within each zone are defined as a planar coordinate pair related to the intersection of the equator and the zone’s central meridian, and measured in meters.

Elevation above sea level is a measure of a geographic location’s height. We are using the global digital elevation model GTOPO30 .
