Calm, measured, mature - Catching up with Mavi Garcia

Spanish Champion tells Cyclingnews why age and experience matter in overall title hunt at Giro d’Italia Donne and Tour de France Femmes

Mavi Garcia (Team Liv Racing Teqfind) speaks to the media at La Vuelta Femenina 2023

As the biggest women's stage races of the year are fast approaching with the Giro d'Italia Donne (June 30-July 9) and Tour de France Femmes avec Zwift (July 23-30), Cyclingnews sits down with one of the sport's major contenders, Mavi Garcia .

The Liv Racing Teqfind all-rounder has steadily grown to become one of the riders to watch in the women’s peloton over the last five years.

There are certain riders whose names seem to be on everyone’s lips – the “box office” players who need no introduction – Marianne Vos, Annemiek van Vleuten, and Lizzie Deignan, to name a few.

Then there are other heroines of cycling who regularly feature in the mix, but they execute their jobs quietly and surely. With podium places in Strade Bianche, the Giro d'Italia Donne, and five-time national road race champion , Señora Garcia resides in this group.

In an exclusive interview, Garcia speaks with Cyclingnews about road racing glory, age and experience plus her prospects for the upcoming Giro d’Italia Donne and the Tour de France Femmes .

El Camino to road racing glory

The Spaniard is happiest when she is back home in Mallorca, where she was born and bred, relaxing with friends and family, plus her partner, who now doubles as her coach.

“We have a spectacular landscape with mountains, and you can see the sea nearby,” says Garcia. “It’s lovely countryside to enjoy when on the bike. From my home in Establiments near Palma, I can very quickly be in the mountains. I like going up from Andratx to Puigpunyent and Puig Mayor, which are great climbs. Then there’s Sa Calobra, which is a very special climb for me.”

In fact, Garcia holds the Strava QOM for many of the local climbs – though also adds that some of the crowns she lost were to folks who scaled the roads on a motorbike.

Biking (on a push-bike) is now Garcia’s first love, though it hasn’t always been the case. Born Margarita Victoria Garcia Cañellas in 1984 at Marratxi, the Mallorcan started out her sporting life on the ice as a figure skater, which she did into her teens. There then followed a few years where she didn’t do much sport at all and focused on her job in hospitality.

After re-starting sport as a competitive runner, aged 25, she developed a taste for combining that with cycling – which her older brother was into – and she had a successful career as a duathlete, taking medals in the European and World Championships. Garcia was also juggling her duathlon career with cycling and had a contract with Bizkaia-Durango but since getting a contract with Movistar in 2018 and focusing 100% on cycling, she hasn’t looked back.

Mavi Garcia leading the peloton in Spain

However, those early days of being a professional cyclist in 2015 were neither straightforward nor fun for the then-31-year-old.

“It was tough for me at first. When I started cycle racing, there were a lot of things that I couldn’t control. It seemed quite a complicated sport with a peloton, unlike in duathlon where you race on your own or with five or six women around you,” Garcia recalls.

“I didn’t understand how or why things were done in a certain way, I couldn’t understand the tactics or anything. As well as this, I was inexperienced, I had a lot of crashes – one year, I broke my collar bone and another time, I broke it on the other side. I was always crashing, and I was often fearful because of the crashes. I remember one year when doing the Giro Donne, out of 10 stages, I crashed in five of them! So yes, I must say things went badly.”

So what kept her in the sport? Garcia admits that she really enjoyed training on the bike, and that kept her in the game but, despite finding it extremely tough to go out and race, she believed that eventually she would do a race where things would go well.

“People around me advised me to continue too, saying you would never know what would be. And in the end, things turned out well. Lots of people helped me and continue to help me along the way, including my partner, who coaches me. There have also been people on my teams," she says.

"I learned a lot when I joined Bizkaia-Durango, the team with which I did my first few races, and I had a really good relationship with the sports director and others on the team. I have good memories of those times with them. To be honest, if it wasn’t for the various people who helped me, things would have been much more difficult when getting into racing. Nowadays, I’ve got the hang of things in cycling, and I really enjoy it.”

After her contract with Movistar Team, Alé BTC Ljubljana (which became UAE Team ADQ), Garcia now finds herself in Liv Racing Teqfind as one of the lead riders. She has come a long way since those days of panicking when riding in a peloton.

Maglia rosa

The Giro d'Italia Donne and the Tour de France Femmes are target events for Garcia. However, given her strong track record on the roads of Italy and with stages having profiles more suited to her, she fancies her chances at the C orsa Rosa .

“I think that the route of the Giro suits me better, as there is just one prologue and then hilly stages. They will be tough, though more like constantly undulating terrain, which is better for me than a stage with a really long climb, such as the Tourmalet in the Tour de France," Garcia says.

"Also, there’s a 22km-time trial on the last day of the Tour. That will be hard for me because there are significant differences in speed between me and some of the other girls. So I think I will do better in the Giro. Both races will be tough, but I hope to do well in the Giro.”

After a 5th place in 2021 and a 3rd in 2023 in the general classification, could this be her year to go two better and stand on the podium as the overall winner of the Giro d'Italia Donne?

Mavi Garcia finishes third overall at the 2022 Giro d'Italia Donne

So far this year, Garcia has had some encouraging results, which bode well for the rest of the season. The reigning Spanish national champion reflects on her successes.

“Flèche-Wallone has been my best result this year so far, though I just fell short of getting onto the podium," she says. "Things were going well, but it was in those last 50 metres going over the Mur de Huy where it got really tough, and I lost contact. But I am really glad that I got that far."

Notwithstanding falling short on the Mur de Huy, the gutsy Spaniard is keen to show her strengths over the forthcoming racing calendar. She has already got one Grand Tour under her belt this year, where she placed in the top 10 at La Vuelta Feminina by Carrefour.es , which this year was a seven-day stage race – a big departure from the usual couple of days at the end of the men’s Vuelta a España.

“La Vuelta has changed totally compared to last year. There were so many spectators. I hadn’t seen so many people on the roads. At some stages where there was a seven-kilometre neutralised zone, and in this area, it was packed with people. It was incredible," Garcia recalls.

"When I was racing, I could hear the fans shouting my name at the sides of the road. Although it was on home soil, I didn’t really feel any pressure.”

Garcia lined up at the Spanish Road Championships as the defending time trial and road racing champion, and although she finished second in the time trial to Mireia Benito , she went on to win a historic fifth road race title .

"I am very happy with this achievement. In the time trial, I could push the numbers that I normally can. So that made me a little uncertain about the road race, but luckily this race went much better," she says.

"I tried to make the race as hard as I could. That worked out well in the finale, and I finish solo to take my fifth title. It is great to have this special national champion jersey for another year. It makes me very happy."

She said she felt pressure to perform in the championships events this year, given her streak of success.

"I’ve won the nationals for the last few years, and people will expect me to win. So, if I don’t win, then that won’t look good. Last year, I felt under pressure, too, as the championships took place in my native Mallorca. Luckily, I had the legs to pull it off!" she says.

Defending her crown this year was not just about bragging rights, but it helped in terms of earning her place to race in the Paris Olympics, and it will give her a psychological boost ahead of the Giro d'Italia Donne.

Age and experience matter

Although Garcia is a comparative newbie to top-level racing, she is one of the more senior women in the peloton. The 39-year-old only had her first season of road racing in 2015, albeit after many years of elite competition in other sports.

By her own admission, she had to learn about cycling in record time compared with many other riders who may be 10 years younger than her but who will still have more than twice as many years of experience.

However, on the plus side, it has meant that she tends to deal with high-pressure and adverse situations in a calm, measured and mature manner. Such was the case when she was hit by the car of her then-team during a stage of the Tour de France Femmes avec Zwift in 2022.

How did she maintain her sang-froid at such a pivotal time in the race?

“It was very difficult. I had to forget about the significance of it and keep my cool, particularly as in the end I didn’t have any serious injury,” Garcia philosophies.

“It costs you the race when that happens at a time when you are already on the limit during the race. But then again, things could have been a lot worse. I just thought to make the most of what I could do for the rest of the race and try and enjoy it as much as possible," she added.

"I was no longer at 100% fitness, but I was really happy to have been part of the first Tour de France, which I enjoyed. It was a privilege to have been able to participate, be in contention and get a top-10 finish.”

Mavi Garcia

In her new team for this year, Liv Racing Teqfind, Garcia feels really happy to have two-time world champion Giorgia Bronzini as the sports director.

“Giorgia has been a successful racer, and she was racing until recently, so she is aware of the environment in women’s cycling and the challenges, so she understands what we are going through. She knows the races and is able to explain to us clearly how the courses are, as well as the tactical aspects." Garcia says.

"I really like what Giorgia does during and outside of the races. She’s a really fun person and can be jokey, but she also knows when to be serious in the race. With her experience of having been a sports director at Trek-Segafredo as well, she is a real asset to our team.”

She is also complimentary of her teammates. “They give 200% for me, and I am infinitely grateful for what they do.”

The Rafa factor

Who inspires the champion from Mallorca? The answer is two champions, as Garcia explains how Anna van der Breggen and Rafael Nadal have influenced her career.

“When I started, the racer I admired was Anna van der Breggen. I thought she was a classy rider, who seemed to maintain her calm when racing, and she had a really good ability to be in the moment and have focus during the races.”

The other person is also from Mallorca, Nadal, who Garcia watched play tennis matches and learned how to handle the ups and downs of sport and sportsmanship.

“I always used to watch him at tournaments with my friend, and I really liked the way that he dealt with the challenge in his matches, the spectacle of the event. He is an extraordinary athlete who I see as a reference to follow.”

Having completed an altitude training camp at Sierra Nevada and worked toward the next block of races, Garcia is fired up. If she truly emulates the King of Clay, she may be well placed to become Queen of the Road.

Of fear and glory: this is Mavi García, Spain’s leading female rider

April 19 th 2023 - 13:00 [GMT + 2]

mavi garcia tour 2023

A former figure skater, runner and duathlete, she only turned to cycling at age 31. Eight years later, she is enjoying the prime of her career as a rider.

An internationally renowned climber, Mavi García is the undisputed number one rider in Spain as she has claimed the last six national championships at stake.

There are seven Spanish riders competing in UCI Women’s WorldTeams . Five of them are part of Movistar Team, the sole Spanish WWT squad, and devote most of their seasons to team duties. They are Alicia González, Sheyla Gutiérrez, Sara Martín, Lourdes Oyarbide y Gloria Rodríguez. Meanwhile, Basque rider Ane Santesteban is the leader of Australia’s Jayco-AlUla every time the road goes uphill. Over at Liv Racing-TeqFind, in the Spanish national champion outfit both in time trials and road races, there is Mavi García. She has already sat for three seasons amongst the top15 riders in the world… and she first took part on a cycling race just eight years ago.

During her childhood, Mavi García (1984, Marratxí) was into figure skating . It was her thing – so much as to be part of the Spanish national team. She however grew tired of it as she found it hard to balance sport, studies and life. It was too much and she decided to hang the skates in her wardrobe at age 16. It marked the beginning of eight long years without doing much sport until that time when she signed up for tennis classes. She already had a full-time job in the hospitality industry, yet she found some spare minutes to warm up before her classes by jogging around the courts. Someone told her she was very fast, that she should give running a try – and so she did by signing up for a mile run. Mavi finished in third place. Standing on that podium changed her life.

mavi garcia tour 2023

After a few years running, Mavi’s brother encouraged her to take on duathlon . It was thanks to this sport that she got a taste of glory, as she claimed three medals in different World Championships. She also got to know the pleasure of riding a bike, as much as to wonder how she could make a living out of it. A friend of hers called the Spanish cycling federation to find out, and got the whereabouts of Bizkaia-Durango as a response. The Basque team invited Mavi to a training camp. On the very first climb of the very first training ride with her conjectural teammates she was the very first at the summit. They immediately welcomed her on board.

It was the beginning of a story that nearly ended less than a year later. In her maiden race with the Spanish national team, Argentina’s Tour de San Luis in 2016 , she crashed hard and harsh on her face. Her nose was broken, and several teeth too. It went to underline how she was yet to learn all the skills that most riders develop in the youth ranks. Yet now it would be even more difficult, because her weakness had now been supplemented with fear. “Back then I was death scared already at every start line, my heart beating as fast as if we were already racing,” she admitted years later. Mavi stood her ground, though, and learned to tame her heart, her mind and her bike . That very year she claimed her first Spanish National Championship with a long-range attack – her trademark.

It was now time to quit duathlon and fully focus on getting a contract to become a real professional rider. The creation of Movistar Team in 2018 granted her a spot that was a reward to her efforts. After a couple of years, she changed outfits to join the Italian WWT squad Alé, which later became UAE Team ADQ. It was in this three-season spell that she defined herself as an endurance, climbing rider. An aggressive one – sometimes out of strength, sometimes out of sheer lack of belief in her own potential. She claimed victories, like a stage of the Vuelta a Burgos and the Classic Lorient Agglomération, and suffered defeats, like this Amstel Gold Race on which she attacked too early and later finished 6th yet missing the energy she had wasted on a pointless move.

Anyway, if there is a landmark race for Mavi García’s career is the 2022 Giro Donne. She was in the best form of her life and went head-to-head with Annemiek van Vleuten – the woman some define as the GOAT in women’s cycling. Together they put the race upside down on a hilly stage to Cesena. Van Vleuten finished as the overall winner, and Mavi ended up very happy with her third position – the kind of result that sets a rider’s status in the peloton.

Last winner, Mavi García signed for Liv Racing-TeqFind , a long-standing Dutch team which wanted her to be its leader in both one-day and stage races. At age 39, the rider from Mallorca is on her prime. She has already collected eight national titles, included the last six in a row – both time trial and road races in the years 2020, 2021 and 2022. Mavi is a woman to watch on every race she takes part in, as she will be this week in the Ardennes classics and also from May 1st at La Vuelta Femenina by Carrefour.es.

Mavi García: “The devil is in the tail with this Tour de France Femmes”

The Spanish national champion and outside contender is eagerly anticipating the Tourmalet stage late in the race.

At 39 years of age, Mavi García is one of the more seasoned riders in the peloton when it comes to years on earth, but in terms of years in the peloton, García is actually behind women a fraction of her age. In her ninth year in the peloton, García is only just finding her rhythm in the sport. Only in the last three years the Spaniard has turned heads, starting with her performance at Strade Bianche in 2020, where she finished second behind Annemiek van Vleuten.

“I made the switch to road cycling later in my career,” García said ahead of the Tour de France Femmes first stage. “Naturally, I am a climber. I also have the right physique for that.”

Her climbing prowess landed García on the podium of the Giro Donne, where she followed a move by Van Vleuten on the fourth stage in 2022 and rode into second place on the general classification. As the week went on, she struggled to stay in that top tier, eventually fighting to finish third overall. Two weeks later she lined up in Paris for the start of the Tour de France Femmes where she would eventually ride to tenth overall, despite being hit by her own team car on a chaotic stage 4.

mavi garcia tour 2023

Again in 2023 García “did the double,” racing the Giro and Tour back to back. The Giro this year wasn’t as much of a fairytale as the last. García finished seventh overall, almost six and a half minutes down.

“The Tour de France Femmes will be my third Grand Tour of the season after La Vuelta Femenina and the Giro Donne,” García said. “I feel good and, above all, am looking forward to racing.”

“In Italy, I might have missed some race rhythm on the first days. As the Giro Donne progressed, I became stronger and stronger. After the Giro Donne, I did everything I could to maintain my form and improve it where possible. I feel by everything that I am ready.”

The form will come in handy, as García said the first few days of the Tour de France Femmes would be a challenge for her. The team would have to be “sharp and alert” in the opening stages, as anything can happen. And sure enough, Lotte Kopecky’s attack on stage 1 split an already-reduced front group, but an alert Garcia responded and made the elite first chase before the peloton reformed. Where García is hoping to shine is in the final two sets, specifically the seventh stage that ends atop the Col du Tourmalet.

“The devil is in the tail with this Tour de France Femmes,” García explained. “In particular, the stage with the climb of the Col du Tourmalet is a highlight. This Pyrenean climb has been climbed in the men’s Tour de France since 1910, heroic battles have been fought here dozens of times.”

mavi garcia tour 2023

“The Col du Tourmalet is an icon, and I look forward to also climbing it in the Tour de France Femmes. That will be the hardest day but I think they will benefit me in the second and fourth stages.”

Depending on how the seventh stage goes, García might end up dreaming of the general classification. She’s spent a lot of time this year optimizing her position on Liv’s time trial bike, with the final stage in Pau in mind.

“Because the Tour de France Femmes finishes with an individual time trial in Pau, it’s still the hardest thing for me, so we’ll see how it goes …” Garcia said.

García went into the 2022 Tour de France Femmes an outside favorite, but comes into the second edition under the radar. When it comes to the seventh stage she will not be able to surprise her rivals, everyone knows she excels on the slopes of a mountain, but there’s not much anyone can do if she climbs away, other than follow her.

Regardless, the Tour de France Femmes is still an important staple of García’s calendar this season.

mavi garcia tour 2023

“We have had great races in the women’s peloton for many years; our calendar has expanded over the years with appealing classics and stage races, such as Paris-Roubaix, the Amstel Gold Race and La Vuelta Femenina,” García said. “We are proud of that. But the addition of the Tour de France Femmes surpasses everything.”

“It’s mainly in the name, I think. The Tour de France is the biggest cycling event in the world. If there is then an equivalent for women, the race automatically benefits from the good name and attracts a lot of attention. We all saw that last year. Millions of people from all over the world followed women’s cycling. It makes you enthusiastic and proud to be part of it, so you then want to perform to the maximum.”

Millions of people will again tune in to watch the women’s race for eight days across France, with an entire country eying García decked out in the Spanish national champion jersey. It’s hard to miss, the colours of the Spanish flag on the white backdrop of Liv Racing-TeqFind’s kit. And García’s day will come on Saturday, once she’s made it through the first six stages of course.

Analysis: The extraordinary career of Mavi García

The emergence of the Women's Tour de France in the last two years seems to have eclipsed the Giro Donne, the great race of world women's cycling until the Gallic bet to give more power to their event. I start talking about the Giro d'Italia Donne because it is the perfect example to describe the greatness of Mavi Garcia, the best Spanish cyclist of the last decade.

Yesterday, after a difficult season in which the pedal stroke has not accompanied her as in previous years, she was proud of her tenth place in the road race of the World Championship. A fall caused a cut that made her unable to follow the best at the key moment, but she still got up and scored a great solo finish to end up reaching a place in the top ten. This is how she commented it, proud:

"Top 10 in the Glasgow World Championship. I could think that with yesterday's legs if I hadn't cut myself in the crash before the course I could have done something nice but after all I leave here very happy to have regained the sensations that I haven't felt for a long time! Yesterday I enjoyed myself so let's finish the year well!"

"I can leave the stage with my head held high" - Curtain comes down on Annemiek van Vleuten's legendary World Championship career

Immaculate trajectory .

Mavi started her career in professional road cycling late, in 2015(with 31 years old), racing for Bizkaia-Durango. Already in 2016 she showed her enormous class by winning her first Spanish Road Championship, as well as finishing sixteenth in her first Giro.

That same year she would finish sixth in the Tour Cycliste Féminin International de l'Ardèche, a race in which she would be fifth the following year in 2017, demonstrating her progression. That year she was second in the time trial and road race at the Nationals.

In 2018 she won her first National time trial, was third in road and came close to her first top 10 in the Giro Donne finishing eleventh. In Arèche she was second overall and in two stages. In 2019 she continued her evolution finishing third overall in the Vuelta a Burgos, second in the GP de Plumelec and sixth in Ardèche taking the mountains.

"Since 2019, he did not have such a solid preparation for the Vuelta" - Primoz Roglic on the right path to Vuelta a Espana according to Jumbo-Visma

In 2020 she won the elite, winning the road and time trial of the Spanish Championships, taking 2 stages and second place in Ardèche and finishing in the top 10 of the Giro Done.

2021 was her great season. She finished sixth in Amstel GoldRace, fifth in Flèche Wallonne, second in Setmana Valenciana, double again in the Nationals, fifth place in the Giro, second in Ardèche and great end of the year with victory in the Giro dell'Emilia and second place in Tre Valli Varesine.

Col de Restefond, the highest European pass, expected to make its appearance at 2024 Tour de France

In 2022 she won the mountains in Andalucía after finishing fifth in Flecha and sixth in Amstel, took a stage in the Vuelta a Burgos, another double in the Nationals, an extraordinary third place in the Giro Donne and was tenth in the Women's Tour de France. As if that wasn't enough, she took the victory in the Lorient Aglomération Classic.

2023, with the change from UAE to Liv, has not been easy for Mavi, who started well in the classics with eleventh place in the Strade Bianche, tenth in the Trofeo Alfredo Binda and fourth in the Flèche Wallonne. In the Vuelta Femenina she finished ninth and in the Giro seventh after winning the Nationals route and finishing second in the time trial. In the Tour de France she had to abandon, but she has ended up proving that she is a great fighter with the tenth place in the Glasgow World Championship.

Mavi Garcia

Mavi Garcia has announced that she will be joining Liv Racing Xstra, a high-profile signing that rivals that of Ashleigh Moolman-Pasio’s move to AG-NXTG. The transfer will give Liv Racing Xstra a genuine GC contender that they haven’t had this season. Garcia will leave UAE Team ADQ after 3 seasons on the team. She cites her talks with the Liv Racing Xstra team as being encouraging and allowing her to achieve the best possible results. With the expected arrival of Silvia Persico to UAE Team ADQ, competition for the biggest races was going to be incoming.

“I need peace, understanding and professionalism. Those conversations [with Liv Racing Xstra manager Eric van den Boom and DS Giorgia Bronzini] gave me confidence. I am convinced that together we can create something very beautiful and that there is room to grow. I have been competing at the highest level for many years now. All the decisions I have made in my career have been deliberate and have always resulted in positive change. That will be no different with this step.” Mavi Garcia

The current Spanish road and TT champion, Garcia has signed with the Dutch team for the next 2 years. She finished on the podium at the Giro Donne , in 3rd place and 10th at the Tour de France Femmes this season. Garcia took her first Women’s WorldTour victory as well this year, at the Vuelta a Burgos Feminas.

“We wanted to strengthen ourselves with a strong rider who is able to achieve success in both stage races and the difficult one-day races. Mavi García fits seamlessly into that profile. She also brings the necessary experience that our talented  youngsters  can use very well,” Eric van den Boom, Liv Racing Xstra manager

The current 2023 roster for Liv Racing Xstra is: Thalita de Jong , Alison Jackson , Jeanne Korevaar, Sabrina Stultiens, Rachele Barbieri, Valerie Demey and Eva Buurman.

Itzulia Women 2024 - Analysing the contenders

T he stage racing season is underway across Spain, and with the conclusion of La Vuelta Femenina , moves into the back-to-back Itzulia Women , from May 10-12, and Vuelta a Burgos Feminas , from May 16-19.

If the Vuelta was any indication cycling fans are in for three days of action-packed racing. Itzulia Women is set to begin in with a 140km race from Vitoria-Gasteiz to Elgoibar that will set the tone for the overall classification with its punchy parcours.

However, as the race continues with stage 2's hilly 104km race in Basauri and then finale queen stage 3 in Donostia, the general classification could go to any number of all-rounders among the peloton.

Reusser will once again be a favourite, even after recovering and returning to racing following a crash at the Tour of Flanders, though she'll face a considerable challenge in her quest to defend the title. Cyclingnews highlights the key riders to watch at the three-day Itzulia Women.

Marlen Reusser and Demi Vollering (SD Worx-Protime)

SD Worx-Protime won two consecutive Itzulia Women titles, with Demi Vollering in 2022 and Marlen Reusser in 2023, and now the aim is to make it three.

The team arrives at Itzulia Women fresh off claiming the overall at La Vuelta Femenina. It was Demi Vollering's first victory of the season, a winning peak timed to perfection , and she will undoubtedly carry that top form into the next two stage races, aiming for stages and a top place in the overall classifications.

However, SD Worx-Protime have shown that they do not need to rely on one rider in order to be successful when it comes to both one-day and stage racing, and like at last year's Itzulia Women, Marlen Reusser will be a key rider to watch as she aims to defend her overall title.

The punchy terrain suits both Vollering and Reusser, but Reusser has the ability to use her time trial power in strategic breakaways and that lends well to consistently gaining time in the overall classification each day.

Reusser has had a turbulent spring, but she has recovered from illness and the injuries sustained in a crash at the Tour of Flanders, which included fractures to her jaw, both ear canals and several broken teeth.

She said that she is ready to try for a second consecutive victory, which would be part of a stepping stone to bigger goals at the Tour de Suisse and Giro d'Italia Women.

Pauliena Rooijakkers (Fenix-Deceuninck)

Pauliena Rooijakkers will lead the Fenix-Deceuninck team at Itzulia Women. She has had experience racing for the general classification at the event after finishing second overall in the 2022 edition behind Demi Vollering.

Fenix-Deceuninck has shown promising form this spring, especially at the recent La Vuelta Femenina, where Yara Kastelijn secured two podium finishes and eighth overall, while Rooijakkers' consistency across the final four stages led to ninth place overall.

Kastelijn isn't racing at Itzulia Women, which means the team will be solely focused on stage opportunities and an overall classification result with Rooijakkers.

The shorter and punchier climbs at Itzulia Women, compared to the Vuelta, might better suit Rooijakkers, who can be among the strongest in the finals but could also be a breakaway card for Fenix-Deceuninck.

Kasia Niewiadoma and Ricarda Bauernfeind (Canyon-SRAM)

Kasia Niewiadoma won the world title at the Gravel World Championships last fall and then carried her winning spirit into La Flèche Wallonne, where she triumphed atop the Mur de Huy.

It marked her first road race victory since 2019 and appeared to bode well for the upcoming stage racing season. While she went into La Vuelta Femenina as a major contender, the team made the decision to pull her out of the race so that she could recover from a lingering illness from the Ardennes Classics.

Back in good health, Niewiadoma will want to continue her top form in the next set of shorter stages races at Itzulia Women and Vuelta a Burgos. These races are also great preparation for potential summer targets at the Giro d'Italia Women and Tour de France Femmes.

Canyon-SRAM also have a contender in Ricarda Bauernfeind, who has shown promising results at the UAE Tour Women (10th), Liège-Bastogne-Liège (9th) and La Vuelta Femenina (6th). In fact, in Niewiadoma's absence at the Vuelta, Bauernfeind stepped up to the GC plate in the mountain stages, where she was sixth at Alto del Fuerte Rapitán and La Laguna Negra and fifth at Valdesquí. Comunidad de Madrid.

A former stage winner at the Tour de France Femmes, Bauernfeind has shown that she can handle the pressures of top-tier racing as a contender in both stages and general classification. What's more, if Neve Bradbury is back on track following the illness that took her out of La Vuelta Femenina the team have yet another rider that could challenge right at the top of the overall results table.

Évita Muzic (FDJ-SUEZ)

Évita Muzic (FDJ-SUEZ) has always been a strong climber and top-10 overall contender, but she has improved her game this spring with a stage win and fifth overall at La Vuelta Femenina.

A former French national champion in 2021, Muzic took her first big victory in 2022 at the Giro d'Italia and has steadily improved with podium finishes in stages at the Tour de France, Tour de Suisse and second overall at Vuelta a Burgos.

Her recent victory atop La Laguna Negra was all the more impressive as she matched Demi Vollering on the ascent and then outsprinted the Dutch Champion across the finish line, showing both stamina on the climbs, strategic nous and speed at the finish.

FDJ-SUEZ also line up with Marta Cavalli, who had a late start to the season due to a pelvis injury sustained while training, and she recently spent several weeks training at altitude instead of racing the Spring Classics.

Cavalli was forced to abandon the Vuelta following a crash on stage 2, but if she is recovered and 100% healthy, she could play a role in the team's overall success at Itzulia Women.

Mavi García (Liv AlUla Jayco)

Spanish champion Mavi García was recognised on the podium as the top rider from her nation in the final classification at La Vuelta Femenina.

Although she can be proud of that achievement, the Liv AlUla Jayco all-rounder as looking for more than 20th overall and will undoubtedly want to improve on that performance at both Itzulia Women and Vuelta a Burgos.

When she is in peak form, Garcia is a major contender for the overall classification at any of the Grand Tours. However, Itzulia Women might be more inherently her style of racing, given its shorter and steeper climbs, which lend well to the powerful attacks and breakaways that she has become so well known for over the last five years.

Garcia is an opportunistic rider, so watch for her to initiate breakaways at the most challenging part of each stage when the peloton is suffering at its worst. She also isn't afraid to launch 50+ km attacks and is more than capable of being among the selection in the finals.

Shirin van Anrooij (Lidl-Trek)

Shirin van Anrooij enjoyed a strong Spring Classics campaign that saw her consistently play a role in the finals of Omloop Het Nieuwsblad, Strade Bianche, Dwars door Vlaanderen, Tour of Flanders, and Brabantse Pijl.

Many of those efforts were well-coordinated team tactics alongside Tour of Flanders winner Elisa Longo Borghini, who is not competing at Itzulia Women. The Italian Champion recently finished third overall at La Vuelta Femenina but is now taking a well-deserved rest, so Van Anrooij will take up the GC mantle at the three-day race.

The Dutch rider recently finished third at the Navarra Women's Elite Classic, a tough one-day race in Spain. She formed part of a select chase group behind solo winner Hannah Ludwig (Cofidis).

Van Anrooij is clearly in good form after recovering from the Spring Classics, and watch for the contest stages and the overall classification at Itzulia.

Kasia Niewiadoma (Canyon-SRAM), Marlen Reusser (SD Worx) and Pauliena Rooijakkers Fenix-Deceuninck)

2022 home tour is over. take a look at a previous home tour, 2019 home tour—41st anniversary.

The 2019 tour featured four private homes plus the Mission Branch Library:

Colonial Revival

Italianate/colonial revival, spanish eclectic cottage.

The Santa Clara Historic Home Tour began in 1978 to showcase unique homes in the City and to benefit local nonprofits. A few years later the tour became a holiday event sponsored by the Historic Preservation Society of Santa Clara (HPSSC) with assistance from the Old Quad Residents’ Association (OQRA). Last year our efforts benefited the following community programs and sites: the Santa Clara Elks Lodge #2347 ENF Scholarship Fund, the Santa Clara Mission Branch Library Renovation Project & Historical Collection, the Santa Clara Central Park Library for the Heritage Pavilion, the South Bay Historic Railroad Society, the Saint Claire Hook & Ladder Historical Society, the Santa Clara Woman’s Club Adobe Restoration Project, the Bill Wilson Center-Quetzal House Upgrades, the Santa Clara Vanguard Drum & Bugle Corps and the Santa Clara Parade of Champions.

The tour demonstrates how vintage buildings have been restored to create delightful structures. Sharing these city jewels helps demonstrate the value of keeping historic neighborhoods intact. This tour has become a Santa Clara tradition. A special thank you to the dozens of volunteers who work long hours throughout the year to bring this event to our community. We appreciate City Historian Lorie Garcia’s beautifully written and thorough home histories and descriptions. Thanks also to Mary Hanel, Retired City Librarian, for her research and contributions to our program.
