Solo Travel Kenya : Your complete Guide

Solo Travel in Kenya has never been easier. Kenya is a warm, welcoming country with one of the most inspiring landscapes on earth. When I am asked about the plausibility of Solo Travel in Kenya, my response is always ‘go for it.

I have travelled solo all my adult life, from explorations of the Greek Islands in my teens to a mid-life crisis jaunt through South America in my 30s. And Kenya is no different. I’m often leaping into a car with my three kids (does travelling with kids under 9 count as solo ? I believe it does) and whizzing off to the coast or on safari. There are tons of places that welcome solo travel in Kenya and I have never felt afraid on any of my trips.

Accommodation in Kenya for Solo Travellers

Kenya has hostels, hotels, tented camps, plush lodges, sweet Airbnbs and campsites where you can find accommodation suited to solo travellers.

While some hotels may charge extra for single travellers, you can negotiate deals or ask them to waive the single supplement if you travel in the off-season. Look for quieter times, like the Maasai Mara out of the migration period, or the coast during school term times.

Airbnb’s can be of excellent quality in Kenya, and Airbnb owners are often open to negotiation. Many people prefer a quiet single person who will take care of their property to a rowdy party. In addition, many of these properties, particularly along the coast, sit empty during term time and the off-seasons. Consider a month-long booking and you could get up to 50% off your stay.

Solo Travel Kenya: Your Complete Guide

Meeting like-minded solo travellers in Kenya.

Kenya doesn’t have the ‘gringo’ trails of some of the more popular travelling destinations across the globe, although there is a well-worn tourist trail, usually Nairobi/Maasai Mara/Diani with some variations. Within Kenya, like many other countries, traveller hotspots are focused around sporting and tourist areas.

At the coast, consider booking into a kite surfing, scuba diving, ocean conservation hotel or hostel – or signing up for a course. This is a great place for single travellers to gather and have fun.

If you are interested in seeing the interior and wildlife, then look for eco-volunteering opportunities or choose to stay at camps and lodges that operate a communal dining area and who will allocate spaces for single travellers on game drives. If you are reluctant to turn up to a safari destination alone, then consider booking a tour and asking if there is space for a solo traveller. This way you are guaranteed company from the off-set.

Make sure you pick the right camp/lodge for you. Some of these are not geared for families and children which you may prefer. Some of them are astronomically expensive. Many camps offer extras such as hot air ballooning, guided walks, visits to Maasai villages, camel or horse safaris. Booking a camp that interests you will increase your chances of meeting a like-minded travel buddy.

Consider starting your trip to Kenya by joining an expedition. Savage Wilderness runs mountaineering trips up Mount Kenya, whitewater rafting on the Sagana river, or even 12-day safari/Mount Kenya/ community services expeditions. Check out their website for group expeditions that will guarantee you fun and company.

Safety and Solo Travel in Kenya

I have travelled all over Kenya alone, and I doubt there is anywhere I would feel too scared to visit – except perhaps the areas around Lamu, and areas of Nairobi at night. However, there are some obvious precautions to take when travelling solo in Kenya.

  • Try not to stand out. As a Kenyan resident, I can spot a tourist a mile away – khaki clothes, a great big camera, massively over-excited to see a monkey. Learn a few words of Swahili and try not to dress like a colonial cartoon character.
  • Don’t walk alone after dark. On safari, the predators are most dangerous at night, in the cities predators of humankind will take advantage.
  • Don’t take pictures without asking for permission – or expect to pay for the privilege if you do.
  • Carry a driving license and a little money in your pocket for the traffic police’s ‘lunch’.
  • Don’t pay for anything upfront without seeing the room/item/goods first.
  • Be vigilant when in public places.
  • Don’t carry lots of cash around with you. Sign up for Mpesa (mobile money) and make all transactions via your phone
  • Know where you are going and if you don’t fake it until you do. The last thing you want to do is stick out like a sore thumb because of looking lost.
  • When in doubt, ask for help. Many people in Kenya speak English.

Solo Travel Kenya: Best places to visit

Watamu is my favourite beach destination in Kenya, and it has all the kitesurfing, scuba diving, windsurfing and deep-sea fishing a gal (or guy could wish for). It has a couple of great backpacker hostels and a relaxed vibe that solo travellers will naturally gravitate to. Even if you don’t meet your future travelling buddy while surfing the waves, there are multitudinous beaches for solo sunsets and a ton of restaurants for scoffing seafood and downing Dawas.

Solo Travel Kenya – Watamu accommodation recommendations

AA Rocha eco-lodge and conservation centre  – close to Tribe Watersports.

Ocean Sports  – a larger resort with an awesome beachfront restaurant and an onsite dive school. Has small banda’s suitable for solo travellers.

Watamu Beach Cottages  – rustic cottages located right on the beach.

Watamu Nugunuts backpackers  – basic backpackers.

Temple Point  – has a dive school and the coolest bar in tow – Lichthaus.

Watamu beach solo travel kenya

Diani Beach

Diani Beach – the most popular tourist destination on the Kenyan coast is probably the most set up for solo travel. Miles of white sand beach fronted by turquoise seas makes it a honeymoon hotspot for global travellers, but there are some cool little hostels and bars for those travelling alone. My top recommendation is Kenyaways Kitesurfing Village, which has the amazing Salty Squid restaurant right on the beach. Even if you don’t kitesurf, residents can lounge on the beach during the day and join in the rambunctious crowd at the bar.

Solo Travel Kenya – Diani Beach accommodation recommendations

Kenyaways Kite Surfing  (Salty Squid Restaurant).

The Sands at Nomads  – while the hotel is pretty expensive, the beachfront restaurant is the best place in town for pizza/seafood/cocktails and you can sign up for many courses at the hotel’s watersports centre.

Diani Backpackers  – dorms or separate rooms, with a pool and a view of the ocean.

Sand Island Beach – fishermen huts on the most amazing beach. It is very isolated but safe, and perfect for a few days of downtime. They are currently under new management, you can contact them on  Facebook here .

Maasai Mara

The Maasai Mara ’s reputation precedes itself. Rolling savannah, packed full of big cats and bigger elephants, it is home to the great migration and a bucket list destination for most travellers to Kenya. It is also a great place to hop on a group tour and make friends. Many lodges and camps waive their single supplement in the off-season making it more attractive to solo travellers. The Maasai Mara will never be a budget-friendly destination, but it is arguably one of the greatest wildlife experiences in the world and probably worth a splurge.

Read this blog on how to travel to the Maasai Mara on a budget . A few key tips are:

Car-share to the Maasai Mara: Nairobi Expat Travel Facebook group often has people advertising a spare space.

  • Flying is astronomical, and even a tour bus may be expensive for what is just a 4-hour drive on good roads.
  • Hire a car . The roads to and within the Mara are, for the most part, excellent. I have driven to and through the park on my own and it was straightforward and incredibly rewarding. A 4×4 is preferable, but you can navigate the main routes without one.
  • Tented camps or lodges outside the park gates are often cheaper than those inside. Camps like Talek Bush Camp or Oldarpoi Camp both sit just a few 100 metres from the park gates. A single person will pay 70 USD for full board and the communal swimming pool and shared spaces may give you the chance to meet other like-minded folks.
  • Consider joining a group safari tour vehicle. There’s nothing like the shared experience of a lion kill to bond a group and get you swapping phone numbers.

Solo Travel Kenya – Maasai Mara accommodation recommendations.

Talek Bush Camp  – camping/bandas/safari tents – communal spaces and a pool

Oldarpoi Bush Camp  – camping & safari tents – communal spaces

Lake Naivasha

Lake Naivasha is unquestionably beautiful. Just 90 minutes out of Nairobi, it is possible as a day trip with a tour group or if you hire your car, but always better to do an overnight.

Camp Carnellys and Sanctuary Farm both have camping and bandas with views across the hippo filled lake, soaring fever trees hiding colobus monkeys and even the odd giraffe or zebra popping by to say hello. Carnellys has a large restaurant with a great vibe that attracts all kinds of visitors, young and old. In the long lazy afternoons, all of Camp Carnellys residents relax at the bar and there are few better places to meet up with solo travellers in Kenya.

Solo Travel Kenya – Lake Naivasha accommodation recommendations

  • Camp Carnelly’s
  • Sanctuary Farm  – lacking a restaurant / communal space now that the pool has flooded with the rising lake, but the rooms are affordable and the scenery is amazing.

Lake Naivasha

Nairobi

There is loads to do in Kenya’s capital city, and you will probably have to pass through Nairobi before moving on to another destination.

Spend some time in Karen and visit the Elephant Orphanage , Giraffe Centre & Kazuri Beads – all easily and safely done alone. Book on to a tour and visit the world’s only wildlife park within a city; Nairobi National Park .

Or head north and spend some time at Karura Forest, get your shopping fix at the best mall in Nairobi, The Village Market or hunt for souvenirs at Spinners Web. You may have heard of the Maasai Markets but Spinners Web has fixed prices and a far greater selection of items. Read my blogs on best hotels in Nairobi , 5 star hotels in Nairobi, Nairobi restaurants , Nairobi Spas , Things to do in Nairobi or day trips from Nairobi

Solo Travel Kenya – Nairobi recommendations

  • The Brandy Bus  – converted bus in Karen that won’t break the bank.
  • Milimani Backpackers  – hostel in Karen
  • Karen Country Club  – stay within the golf resort and have access to restaurants and bars, spa, pool, tennis and golf.
  • Ibis Styles Hotel  – right in the centre of town where all the action is happening. This safe, modern yet affordable hotel is a good option
  • Tribe Hotel  – Located within the Village Market, it’s a splurge but you will be close to over 20 restaurants, bars, a spa, tons of shops, ad other activities such as bowling, a gym, a trampoline park. It is also close to Karura Forest.

Giraffe Centre Nairobi

Mount Kenya

Mount Kenya is Africa’s second-highest mountain and Kenya’s highest. Its snowy peak sits above Laikipia’s parks and conservancies. The mountain is climbable even for a novice and many tour companies offer expeditions up the mountain and along the rivers, gorges, game reserves that surround it. Laikipia, and its largest town, Nanyuki , are in Kenya’s highlands so things can get a little chilly up there in the colder months. Laikipia has tons to do – climb the mountain, go fly fishing or explore the magnificent and lesser-visited game parks such as Ol Pejeta and Meru.

Solo Travel Kenya – Laikipia accommodation recommendations

Le Rustique  – fancy-ish restaurant in the centre of Nanyuki has great little rooms which are perfect for weary travellers,

Castle Forest Lodge  – perched on the lower slopes of Mount Kenya, this is a dreamy alpine location with small, inexpensive bandas and an onsite pub.

Sweetwaters Serena Lodge  – right in the middle of one of the best conservancies in Kenya, Ol Pejeta. A proper lodge experience for an unforgettable safari.

Amboseli National Park

Sitting at the foothill of Mount Kilimanjaro, filled with swamps that reflect the skies and vast hordes of elephant families, Amboseli National Park may be the prettiest park in Kenya, but there isn’t much in the way of cheap tented camps or hostels. Do check out the Amboseli accommodation guide if you are keen to go.

Solo Travel Tips and Tricks for Kenya

I have travelled all over Kenya, sometimes alone, often with my three small children, which is a far scarier prospect than travelling by yourself. I have found Kenya and Kenyans to always be friendly. Here are some travel tips if you solo travel to Kenya.

  • Travel in the off-season where prices are cheaper and hotels are emptier. Travel Kenya blog here .
  • Book the SGR train in advance – it often gets very full so don’t be tempted to jump on last minute.
  • Flights around the country are rarely booked – you occasionally get deals but not often – so you can hop on and hop off.
  • Be prepared to bargain. A rule of thumb is to start two thirds lower than the quoted price and work up. While the hawkers are probably charging you double what they would a local, consider that you probably earn double what they do and being generous with your prices is considerate.
  • Try to buy and book locally wherever you can. Kenyans need money far more than those giant corporations.
  • Travel mindfully. Don’t litter. Don’t chase or scare animals. Leave only footsteps as the adage goes.
  • Read my blog on Essential things to know before visiting Kenya , for ideas on what to pack, vaccinations and other important travel tips.

Book Your Flight Use Jetradar to find a cheap flight. It is one of the largest airline booking engines in the world with over 750 airlines.

Book Your Accommodation I always use  Boo king.com . They have the cheapest rates for hotels and guest houses in Kenya. Agoda sometimes features hotels that Booking.com hasn’t picked up.  TripAdvisor  is my go to portal for checking reviews on accommodation / restaurants in the local area. I never book without checking TripAdvisor first.

Don’t Forget Travel Insurance Travel insurance will protect you against illness, injury, theft, and cancellations. I recommend the following

  • World Nomads  (for everyone below 70)
  • Visitors Coverage (good for US citizens)
  • Compensair – if you have a cancelled or delayed flight you may get a refund.

Author knows Kenya and there is a lot of good information here. However the advice on bargaining is just plain wrong. The starting price will be at minimum five times the vendor will accept. Best advice is to walk away when told the price. That is likely to lead to at least a one third reduction. Then start the bargaining at about 10% of the reduced price. Negotiate a proper price, 15-20% of the original ask and then if feeling generous give a gift

I need to come with you to negotiate because there is no way I would ever manage 15% of original price/. Most times I’m lucky to get 15% off

What people love about Kenya Solo Tours

Everything was Amazing
Absolutely fantastic! I was with a lovely group of people, the guide and driver were brilliant and the accommodation was out of this world. Only down side is lots of travelling but the experience made up for it. Loved the Fig Tree and masi mara.
Michael and the team are just amazing and made the trip as comfortable as possible. Michael the guide had so much knowledge about the animals and vegetation. The porters are super friendly and the chef made some amazing meals I didn’t expect to get on the mountain. The route was spectacular from start to finish, the last lodge was a an amazing place to finish off the trip.

A Solo Traveller's Guide to Kenya

Soak up the majesty of Kenya on a solo trip to see the Big Five

Welcome to East Africa’s favourite safari destination, a country that rolls out 580,000sqkm (223,939sqmi) of spectacular landscapes. You’ll spot almost every animal from A to Z, alive and kicking, in its 40 or so national parks and nature reserves. In juxtaposition, the Kenyan coast is lined with white sandy beaches edging the space-blue Indian Ocean. Get stuck into surfing, snorkelling, diving, sailing or just sunbathing. Learn a few of its 68 different languages spoken by 54 million people for a bit of fun – English is widely spoken.

What’s the vibe.

Spot the Big Five on your trip to Kenya

Kenyans are incredibly welcoming and friendly, even more so outside of the big cities. It’s touching how fascinated children are by visitors from Europe and the Americas. There are also tons of places that welcome solo travellers – most relish their time anywhere around the country – and a little common sense, as on any international trip, keeps you even safer.

A Kenya solo trip overview

A trip to the Maasai Mara is a bucket-list experience for travellers to Kenya

It’s easy to go wild for Kenya, whether over a week or three. It’s number-one for safaris and the Big Five wildlife encounters. But you’ll also be thrilled by its volcanoes in the Great Rift Valley, trekking Africa’s second-highest mountain (Mount Kenya), the Serengeti-Maasai Mara ecosystem, sailing in a 100-year-old dhow and dazzlingly starry skies.

Visit a Maasai village and get acquainted with their culture, housing, foods and nomadic lifestyle. They’re continually moving to greener pastures.

Kenya is home to beautiful sandy beaches along the coast

Explore Lake Victoria, the world’s largest tropical, freshwater lake and the beginning of the River Nile. Its 19 tranquil islands with magical white sandy beaches, swaying palms and sizzling sunsets are a paradise for birds and bird-watchers.

Where to stay in Kenya as a solo traveller

There are plenty of luxe accommodation options around the country

Kenya has a cross-section of accommodation for various budgets. Some may charge extra for singles – but negotiation often works, especially during the off-season, outside the Maasai Mara migration period, or the coast during school term times.

From basic tented camps to opulent lodges, safari lodges are a dime a dozen across the Kenyan countryside. The quirky Ark Lodge is set in the heart of well-known, game-rich Aberdare National Park. It’s like Noah’s Ark overlooking a floodlit wildlife-magnet salt-lick and waterhole. At night, room buzzers alert you to unique waterhole visitors.

Many people dream of staying in a castle, and Kenya has one. Put your feet up in the 29-room Tafaria Castle, and let Laikipia Plains wildlife and Mount Kenya views soothe you.

Get exhilaratingly stranded at a deserted golden beach in Mambrui. A coconut plantation cocoons Che Shale, and the beach’s flat water is a kite-surfers paradise. Or alternately you can sail, snorkel and deep-sea fish.

If you’re after a special stay, check out our top pick of beautiful boutique hotels in Kenya .

What to do in Kenya as a solo traveller

Safaris are number one, and surfing is second. But there are many more experiences to discover: perhaps a thermal bath in three cascading lagoons at Olkaria Geothermal Spa, on the Great Rift Valley floor at the heart of Hell’s Gate National Park – also the setting for Tomb Raider and T he Lion King .

Trek up Mount Kenya to reach the highest point in the country

Test your prowess against Kenya’s supreme Mount Kenya at 5,199m (17,057ft). With proper gear and a guide, it’s a cinch. Fit walkers can easily conquer the third highest peak, Point Lenana.

The Equator splits the middle of Kenya. The best spot to straddle the line is 6km (3.7mi) south of Nanyuki or the exact same distance north, at Central Kisumu.

See the magnificent landscapes of the Maasai Mara from a hot-air balloon

Get up, up and away over the Maasai Mara in a hot-air balloon. Drift over the vast, majestic plains – eyeballing the wildlife going about its daily business is breathtaking. Afterwards, partake in a sumptuous champagne breakfast beside jungle kings.

You’ll spend several days within Aberdare National Park and the Maasai Mara as part of Culture Trip’s exclusive seven-day Ultimate Kenyan Safari Experience .

Eating and drinking in Kenya

Taste the best of Kenyan cuisine when you visit a ‘kibanda’

The best way to fully immerse yourself in the Kenyan food scene is at a kibanda (open-air restaurant), where life is simple and the food spectacular. Sit at basic tables and bench seats – think stones and bricks with a plank. There are no menus, water dispensers or bathrooms, no pizzas, burgers or French fries. Just fabulous filling beef, mandazi (deep-fried bread pouches), chicken, chapati, beans and ugali – this thick-porridge-like maize dish is the real Kenyan deal. If you want more, ask for sosa (an additional helping); the cook will love you.

If you’re adventurous, try camel tea, a camel milkshake or camelcino (camel-milk cappuccino). Or boogie on at a delectable flea market boho brunch comprising fantastic local foods, music and drinks.

Getting around Kenya solo

Adventurous solo travellers can get around Kenya by public transportation

Expect all forms of transport – of course the best way to experience Kenya is on tour rather than overcrowded local buses or matatus (colourful minibuses). Tours use fully maintained buses or light aircraft.

The Nairobi to Mombasa SGR Madaraka Express train now takes about four and a half hours instead of the leisurely overnight transit. The Modern Coast Bus is another worthwhile alternative with first and business class options.

Stay safe, stay happy in Kenya

Grab a local Safaricom SIM on arrival with heaps of internet; they’re cheap and have the best coverage. With few ATMs outside of major cities, carry Kenyan cash (shillings) in small denominations. Only bigger safari lodges accept credit cards. By removing the geo-tag location from your wildlife photos, you won’t attract poachers.

Cultural need-to-knows

Learning a few words of Swahili will be appreciated by locals in Kenya

As most Kenyans are Muslim, it’s best to dress conservatively. Most city people know English, but country folk usually stick to Swahili, so learn a few essential words, and they’ll appreciate it: h abari (hello); niko sawa (I’m fine); kwaheri (goodbye); and asante (thank you). Always ask permission when taking photos of the Maasai and leave a gratuity after visiting their village.

Preparing for Your Kenya Solo Travel Adventure

Before embarking on your solo journey to Kenya, some essential preparations are necessary to ensure a smooth and memorable safari experience .

Researching Destinations and Attractions

Research the different destinations and attractions in Kenya to create an itinerary that aligns with your interests. Whether you want to witness the Great Wildebeest Migration in the Maasai Mara or hike to the summit of Mount Kenya, knowing what each location offers will help you plan your travel route effectively.

Plan Your Solo Travel Kenya Itinerary With A Local Expert

Thorough research is crucial to familiarize yourself with Kenya’s attractions, climate, visa requirements, and travel advisories. Plan your itinerary, taking into account the time of year, weather conditions, and the activities you wish to engage in during your visit.

Obtaining Necessary Travel Documents

Ensure you have all the necessary travel documents before heading to Kenya. This includes a valid passport with at least six months validity, a visa (which can be obtained online or upon arrival for most nationalities), and any required vaccinations.

Booking Accommodations and Transportation

Book accommodations that suit your preferences and budget. Kenya offers a wide range of options, from luxury lodges and resorts to budget-friendly guesthouses and backpacker hostels. Additionally, arrange for reliable transportation options, such as hiring a local driver or using reputable tour operators for safaris and long-distance travel.

Get in touch with Travel4Purpose for your accommodation and transportation services.

Packing Essential for Solo Travel Kenya

When packing for your solo adventure in Kenya, consider bringing the following essentials:

  • Lightweight and breathable clothing suitable for warm weather
  • Comfortable walking shoes
  • Sunscreen, insect repellent, and a hat for sun protection
  • A travel adapter for charging your electronic devices
  • A good quality camera to capture stunning landscapes and wildlife encounters

Safety Considerations for Solo Travelers

While Kenya is generally a safe country for tourists, it’s essential to take certain precautions as a solo traveler.

While solo travel in Kenya can be incredibly rewarding, it’s essential to prioritize safety. Here are some practical tips to ensure a secure and enjoyable experience:

Following Local Laws and Customs

Respect the local laws and customs of Kenya. Familiarize yourself with the cultural norms and traditions to ensure you don’t unintentionally offend the locals. Dress modestly, particularly when visiting religious sites or rural areas.

Research and Choose Reputable Accommodation

When booking accommodation, opt for reputable establishments with positive reviews. Ensure the place offers secure premises, reliable staff, and necessary amenities to make your stay comfortable.

Blend in with Locals

To avoid standing out as a tourist, try to dress modestly and avoid flashy clothing or accessories. Wearing neutral colors is generally a good idea. Learning a few basic phrases in Swahili can also help you blend in and show respect for the local culture.

Avoid walking alone at night

Just like anywhere else, it’s generally safer to avoid walking alone in unfamiliar areas, particularly after dark. If you need to move around at night, consider taking a taxi or using a reliable transportation service.

Be careful before taking pictures on your solo travel to Kenya Safari

Always ask for permission before taking someone’s picture, as it is considered polite. In some cases, people may request a small fee in return for allowing their photo to be taken.

Be prepared for encounters with authorities

Carry a copy of your driving license and have some cash readily accessible for any encounters with traffic police. However, be cautious and ensure that any requests for money are legitimate.

Check before making payments

When making any payments, especially in advance, it’s wise to inspect the goods or services first. This applies to accommodations, tours, or any other purchases you may make.

Stay vigilant in public places

As with any crowded area, it’s important to be aware of your belongings and keep an eye out for any suspicious activity. Avoid displaying valuable items, such as expensive jewelry or large amounts of cash.

Minimize cash and use mobile money

Instead of carrying large amounts of cash, consider signing up for a mobile money service like Mpesa, which is widely used in Kenya. This allows you to make transactions through your phone and reduces the risk of theft.

Familiarize yourself with your surroundings

Before exploring an area, ensure you have a good understanding of your destination. Study maps, plan your routes, and be confident in your directions to avoid looking lost or vulnerable.

Seek assistance when needed

If you have any doubts or need help, don’t hesitate to ask for assistance. Many Kenyans are fluent in English and are often willing to provide directions or guidance.

Travel Tips and Tricks for Solo Travel in Kenya

If you’re planning a solo trip to Kenya, here are some additional tips and tricks to enhance your experience:

Travel in the off-season

Visiting during the off-season can offer several advantages, including cheaper prices, fewer crowds, and more availability in hotels. Consider researching the best times to visit Kenya based on weather and tourist patterns.

Book the SGR train in advance

The Standard Gauge Railway (SGR) is a popular mode of transportation in Kenya. To secure your spot, it’s advisable to book your train tickets in advance, as they tend to fill up quickly.

Consider domestic flights

While flights within Kenya are not often heavily discounted, there may be occasional deals available. Keep an eye out for any promotions, as domestic flights can be a convenient way to travel between different regions of the country.

Support local businesses

Whenever possible, choose to buy and book from local businesses and vendors. This helps support the local economy and communities rather than large corporations. Consider staying in locally owned accommodations and dining at local restaurants to have a more authentic experience.

Modest travel habits

Respect the environment and wildlife during your travels. Avoid littering and dispose of waste properly. When encountering animals, maintain a safe distance and never chase or scare them. Follow the principles of responsible and sustainable travel, leaving only footprints behind.

Research essential information

Africa's best authentic tailor-made safaris

Team Member Headshot

By Matthys van Aswegen

Safari Travel Planner

Most parts of Kenya are suited to solo travel. Independent travelers using public transport will find that locals are very friendly and keen to converse with single foreigners.

Solo on a Kenya Safari

During a solo Kenya safari, small tented camps and private concessions’ reserves are probably better suited to single travelers than larger lodges in public sanctuaries since they tend to offer a more hands-on, personalized service.

Highlights on a Solo Safari in Kenya

Most solo travelers on a Kenya safari also want to visit the coast. The highlights are the same as for other travelers: the thrill of being in the bush and the range of wild animals to be seen in famous reserves such as Masai Mara , Amboseli, and Laikipia.

Turtle on the shores of Matamu

Of the coastal resorts, Malindi has the most inherently sociable and integrated atmosphere, making it perhaps better suited to friendly solo travelers than rustic Watamu or spread-out Diani. The Rift Valley lakes are a worthwhile destination for solo travelers interested in local cultures.

Travel Tips for Solo Safari in Kenya

Sociable solo travelers in Kenya might be keener to join group safari tours in Kenya or to stay at lodges that offer all-inclusive packages with group game drives and customarily encourage guests to mingle by dining together at one large table.

There are no risks specific to solo travel in Kenya. Still, single women, in particular, should apply the usual common-sense precautions such as not walking alone at night in cities, particularly Nairobi, and avoiding deserted beaches.

Solo Travel in Kenya

As the birthplace of safaris, Kenya and its people know a thing or two about making a trip as unique, rewarding and unforgettable as possible. If you’re planning on travelling solo, there are plenty of intimate properties where each day is tailored just for you, and you can rest assured that you’ll be taken care of by fantastic hosts and guides every step of the way. And alongside time on your own to reflect and take in the magnitude of your surroundings, there will also be opportunities to enjoy the company of others, sharing experiences around the camp fire and swapping tales over morning coffee. Read on to hear all about our favourite trips for solo travel in Kenya – and none of them cost an arm and a leg either.

Solo Travel in Kenya

Spot unique & amazing wildlife

This week-long trip will introduce you to some of Kenya’s most thrilling wildlife destinations, and all are within a picturesque and animal-filled drive of one another. After touching down in Nairobi , you’ll join your guide and set off for Laikipia . Once mostly farmland, Laikipia is now a haven for endangered wildlife and one of Kenya’s greatest conservation triumphs. In fact, you’ll be staying in one of the most iconic conservancies, Ol Pejeta , East Africa’s largest black rhino sanctuary and home to the only northern white rhino on Earth. Ol Pejeta’s Safari Cottages are completely private and equipped with their own kitchens, chef and huge verandas where elephants often parade right past. Each day is built entirely around your interests, whether it’s birdwatching on foot or game drives to spot rare species like Grevy’s zebra, Jackson’s hartebeest, and reticulated giraffe.

Next, your journey will take you south to the Sunbird Lodge , high above the glinting Lake Elementaita. Over breakfast at the cliff’s edge, the incredible lake views hint at what’s to come, and you’ll spend the majority of your time exploring the shores on game drives, spotting great herds of Cape buffalo, rare Rothschild’s giraffe and slinking cats on the prowl. By the water, you’ll spot guffawing, boulder-like hippos, and a majestic variety of birds, including breeding giant pelicans and around 400 other species. There’s also the option to take it all in from the basket of a hot air balloon, where you can scan the impressive waters of Lake Nakuru and surreal Hell’s Gate too.

Your final destination is Ilkeliani , a charming camp on the Talek River. A suspension bridge leads straight into the Masai Mara from camp making it possible to enter the park before anyone else at dawn. Of course, when the swarms of wildebeest of the Great Migration are in the area (between late-July and October), you couldn’t be closer to the action, but there’s plenty to see throughout the year too. On guided walks , and day and night drives , you’ll spy herds of elephant and buffalo, giraffe and a host of predators including lion, cheetah, leopard and elusive serval. Ilkeliani Camp promises total flexibility, where each day is led by you – and nature, of course.

solo trip kenya

Wildlife watching & island bliss

You’ll experience the different sides of Kenya on this trip that will take you between bucket list safari spots to the scrumptious coast.

At Lake Elementaita, settle into one of the Sunbird Lodge’s private cottages and enjoy the vistas across the pristine waters of the lake itself. In the morning – and after a piping-hot cup of Kenyan coffee – depart on a game drive round the lake or further afield to Lake Nakuru , spotting buffalo, elephant and black and white rhino as you go. On a boat, glide past pods of hippo and fluttering birdlife and enjoy an entirely different perspective of the lake and plains beyond. As the day ends, enjoy sundowners and canapes as watch as the wildlife begins to change shift for the night.

If you thought wildlife encounters couldn’t get any better, think again as you arrive in the Masai Mara . There are close-up moments with nature’s smaller details on a bush walk, or get your binoculars ready for a game drive amongst endless lines of wildebeest (between mid-July and October), track big cats to their shady napping spot or scan the river for hippo and crocodile. Share the memories of the day over a delicious dinner at Ilkeliani Camp before retiring to your spacious tented suite, the sounds of Africa filling the air.

Wrap up your Kenya adventure with a little leisure and sunshine on  tiny Chale Island off the coast of Diani . Lush florets of trees hide a secluded stretch of lounger-filled, white sand that melts into the turquoise Indian Ocean. And your room is just a few sandy footsteps away… Activities-wise, the bay offers a wealth of choice from kayaking and glass-bottom boat rides to snorkelling and scuba diving among the lively coral reefs, sea turtles included. Dreamy doesn’t begin to cover it – and if you’re looking for the last word in ‘private’, the Suite on the Rock is your answer.

Kenya holds the 117th spot on the  Global Peace Index . The GPI is a creation of the Institute for Economics and Peace (IEP) and stands as the foremost global measure of worldwide tranquility.

However, it is important to take certain precautions to ensure a safe and enjoyable trip. Here are some key points to consider:

1. Traveling with a Group or Tour Company : It is recommended to book travel through a reputable Kenya travel company and consider joining group tours with other travelers, especially for solo female travelers. This can provide a sense of security and support during the trip. Additionally, consider finding a travel buddy .

2. Precautions and Awareness : While many solo female travelers have reported feeling safe during their trips to Kenya, it is essential to exercise caution, especially when traveling alone. Avoiding walking alone after dark and being aware of your surroundings are important safety measures to consider.

3. Local Situational Awareness : Being mindful of the local situation and staying up to date on any potential risks or safety concerns is crucial. This includes being cautious of street scammers, pickpockets, and other potential threats, as well as staying informed about the areas you plan to visit.

Important Notes

Fly into and out of Jomo Kenyatta International Airport (NBO) in Nairobi.

Before 3 pm ideally. The welcome meeting and dinner will be from 5 pm onwards starting at the hotel.

We suggest booking a flight from 1 pm onwards in order to leave plenty of travel time. The hotel is close to the airport but the recommendation is that you arrive at the airport three hours before your flight.

If you arrive on Day 1 of your adventure, or you book pre-tour accommodation with us, your airport arrival transfer will be included. If you book alternative pre-tour accommodation or are arriving by another mode of transport you must arrange your own arrival transfer.

Arrival transfers are private to Flash Pack and will be in groups depending on flight times. Sometimes this means waiting in the airport for a short while until other flights have arrived.

A group departure transfer is provided at 10 am on the day of departure, from your hotel in Nairobi to Jomo Kenyatta International Airport (NBO). If you require a separate transfer, please consult with your Pack Leader or hotel reception who will arrange a safe and reputable private taxi for you.

Flashpackers no longer require a visa to enter Kenya. However, you will be required to fill out an Electronic Travel Authorization (ETA) in advance of travel.

To enter Kenya, you must have two blank pages in your passport and an ‘expiry date’ at least six months after the date you arrive.

If you take prescription medication, ensure you bring enough to last the entire adventure, plus a few extra days in case of travel delays. Carry a copy of your prescription with you in case you need to visit a clinic while abroad.

We hope this information will help you prepare for a safe and healthy adventure.

Please note that tips are not included in the cost of this adventure. Suggested amounts per person are:

  • Pack Leader: 11 USD per day
  • Driver: 6 USD per day
  • Local tips: 2-4 USD per day. Some Pack Leaders will collect a tipping kitty at the welcome meeting to take care of local tips (waiters, porters, room stewards, lodge and hotel staff).

However, all tips are at your discretion depending on what you feel comfortable with.

We recommend spending money of approximately 10-20 USD per day, not including any extra activities you may like to sign up for, such as the hot air balloon ride (450 USD per person), boat ride on Lake Naivasha (25 USD) or visit to the Maasai manyatta (homestead).

On Day 5, you have the option to begin your day with a sunrise hot air balloon ride over the Masai Mara. You can arrange this with your Pack Leader while in Kenya at a cost of 450 USD per person.

At Flash Pack, the safety and security of our travelers are of utmost importance to us. We work closely with our ground staff to ensure that our itineraries prioritize safety above everything else. Kenya is a beautiful and welcoming country, but it’s important to be aware of potential safety issues.

Although most tourist areas are generally safe, it’s still possible for travelers to experience crime. Exercise caution, especially in Nairobi after dark. We recommend avoiding walking at night and using reputable transportation services instead, like hotel shuttles.

For more detailed information on safe travel, we suggest consulting government websites such as the  US State Department ,  British Foreign Office , and the  Australian Department of Foreign Affairs .

Please be aware that the itinerary, activities and hotels are subject to change. These changes can happen with little notice due to availability, poor weather, seasonal changes, or other circumstances beyond our control – but we’ll always do our best to ensure it has little impact on your experience. From time to time, we may also make changes to your itinerary to try out new ideas and keep things fresh and exciting.

Yes. Plastic bags have been banned in Kenya for environmental reasons. Visitors are not permitted to bring plastic bags into the country in either their hand luggage or checked luggage. Travelers with duty-free plastic shop bags will be required to leave them at the airport.  If you do bring any plastic bags, your luggage will be intercepted and any plastic bags will be removed.

For this adventure, we ask that you bring a soft duffel bag/soft-sided bag rather than a rigid suitcase. Our vehicles have very limited luggage compartments of an irregular shape, and soft bags are much easier to stow. In a worst case scenario, suitcases might have to be left behind and stored at our office in Nairobi. Please note that the maximum weight limit for your luggage is 15 kg. An additional day pack is permitted. A complimentary laundry service is offered at many of the camps and lodges.

Day-by-day itinerary

solo trip kenya

Board your overnight flight to Nairobi today.

Welcome to Kenya! Arrive in Nairobi and transfer to your hotel.

Please note: Most flights from North America arrive late in the evening.

Climb into 4x4 land cruisers and set out to discover notable landmarks and local culture in and around Nairobi, Kenya’s bustling capital city.

  • Watch elephants bathe and eat during a stop at the Sheldrick Wildlife Trust, which has operated an orphan elephant rescue and wildlife rehabilitation program since its founding in 1977.
  • Learn about the rescued, orphaned elephants, their trusted keepers, and the organization’s conservation work across Kenya.
  • Enjoy an included welcome lunch with your fellow travelers at a local restaurant in Nairobi.
  • Visit Sandstorm Kenya, a company that began as a maker of safari tents and now employs 40 Maasai craftspeople who hand-make totes, backpacks, and other styles of bags from locally sourced canvas and leather.
  • Tour Sandstorm’s facilities to learn how its bags are made, from the sourcing of materials to the finished product.

Tonight, gather with your Tour Director and fellow group members at a mixer before enjoying dinner at a local restaurant.

Travel south to Amboseli National Park today. This roughly 150-square-mile natural area sits against the breathtaking backdrop of Mount Kilimanjaro and is known for its population of wild African elephants.

  • Enjoy an included lunch at your safari lodge or camp.
  • Set out on an afternoon game drive after lunch.
  • Ride along with your expert driver and naturalist guide in search of elephants, leopards, lions, baboons, cheetahs, wild dogs, buffaloes, kudus, hippos, rhinos, wildebeest, and dozens more animals.

Join your tour mates for an included dinner this evening, served with beer or wine.

This morning, head out on your first game drive of the day and marvel at Amboseli National Park’s huge herds of elephants, as well as ostriches, leopards, lions, and rhinos.

Later, meet a wildlife conservation expert from a local nonprofit animal welfare organization.

  • Hear how locals and park rangers work together to protect the wildlife.
  • Ask the expert any questions you have about anti-poaching efforts and animal conservation.

After an included lunch, head back out for a second game drive through Amboseli National Park.

Enjoy an included dinner served with beer or wine after freshening up this evening.

Travel through scenic, highland landscapes—and make a photo stop at the equator—on your way to the Great Rift Valley. This astoundingly beautiful region is an important center of ecological study. Its sparkling lakes and steep, rocky escarpments serve as havens for wildlife, such as black rhinos, rare Rothschild giraffes, and more than a dozen globally threatened bird species.

  • Continue on to the vast and ancient Lake Naivasha, which, at nearly 6,200 feet above sea level, is the highest of the Great Rift Valley’s three best-known lakes.
  • Enjoy an included lunch with your fellow travelers at a local restaurant.
  • Set out on a boat tour of Lake Naivasha, which is known for its substantial population of hippos and bird species.

This evening, sit down for an included dinner served with beer or wine.

Continue through the Great Rift Valley as you travel to the Maasai Mara, a nearly 600-square-mile national reserve in southwestern Kenya known for its vast plains and abundant wildlife. The region is also home to the Maasai people, an indigenous tribe of semi-nomadic pastoralists whose livelihood revolves around cattle. Brightly colored clothing and beaded jewelry are among many traditions the Maasai people have maintained, while other tribes have adopted more modern styles of living.

Immerse yourself in the Maasai way of life during a visit to a local boma, or homestead.

  • Join members of the Maasai tribe in their signature adamu, or jumping dance.
  • Tour a functioning Maasai boma—a collection of mud-hut homes—and discover the tribe’s history and heritage.
  • Visit a market where Maasai people sell handiworks and crafts, and learn how money from visitors’ purchases sustains the tribe.
  • Receive your own Maasai name and learn the meaning behind it.

Sit down for an included dinner this evening, served with beer or wine.

Today, get to know the awe-inspiring animals of the Maasai Mara National Reserve.

  • Rise before the sun for an early morning game drive and an exhilarating opportunity to spot leopards, rhinos, Cape buffalo, lions, and elephants—known collectively as the Big Five.
  • Head back to your tented safari camp for an included lunch.
  • After lunch, climb aboard a safari vehicle for an afternoon game drive, keeping your eyes peeled for prides of lions snoozing in the shade, giraffes ambling among leafy trees, and sturdy, shaggy-maned warthogs trotting through tall grass.

Celebrate your trip at tonight’s farewell dinner, served with beer or wine.

Transfer to Nairobi this morning. Then, relax in a dayroom before boarding your flight home tonight or early tomorrow morning, or extend your stay to explore Zanzibar.

  • In order to enter Kenya (and Zanzibar, which is a semi-autonomous province of Tanzania, on the tour extension), U.S. and Canadian citizens need a valid passport with an expiration date extending at least six months beyond the date of reentry.
  • We recommend having at least two blank passport pages for entry stamps.
  • U.S. and Canadian passport holders must purchase an individual visa from the Kenyan government’s Electronic Travel Authority website ( etakenya.go.ke/en ) prior to departure and follow our application walkthrough guide . You can also purchase your ETA by using a visa provider, such as our partner VisaCentral .
  • U.S. and Canadian passport holders must obtain a visa in order to enter Tanzania on the tour extension (U.S. citizens must apply for a multiple entry visa). While it is possible to obtain a visa at the border, we strongly recommend purchasing your visa in advance, as wait times upon arrival can exceed two hours. You can purchase an electronic visa on the Tanzanian Electronic Visa Portal website and follow our application walkthrough guide . You may also submit a request for a paper visa by visiting your local embassy or purchase your visa in advance by using a visa provider, such as our partner VisaCentral . You will need to have your visa receipt with you upon arrival in Tanzania.
  • If you are not a U.S. or Canadian citizen, you must contact each destination country’s consulate for your specific entry requirements.
  • You can see the most up-to-date entry requirements for the destination(s) you’ll visit on tour by going to goaheadtours.com/entry-requirements and searching the code KE6.
  • You will walk for about 45 minutes daily across mostly flat terrain, including some paved roads, unpaved trails, and dirt paths.
  • Travelers should be healthy enough to participate in all included walks without assistance.
  • You should feel comfortable managing your own baggage at times. This tour also includes long, bumpy rides in safari vehicles. You should feel comfortable stepping up and down to get in and out of the vehicles, standing for long periods of time, and maintaining your balance.
  • Go Ahead Tours and the Tour Director who accompanies your group are unable to provide special, individual mobility assistance to travelers on tour. The responsibility of the Tour Director is to ensure the group as a whole enjoys a relaxing and informative journey, and he or she cannot be relied upon to provide ongoing, individualized assistance to any one traveler.
  • If you have any mobility concerns or physical restrictions, please contact our Customer Experience Team.
  • For the duration of your tour you will be assigned to your own Driver Guide and their vehicle in groups of four-six. There will also be one Lead Driver Guide for the whole group.
  • You will have different Driver Guides in each country and they will be leading your group throughout your journey through Kenya and mainland Tanzania.
  • Your Driver Guide will provide commentary during your game drives which builds on each days activity of the course of your tour.
  • The role of the Lead Driver Guide is not only to provide information and context on the destinations you visit, but also to confirm services, coordinate inclusions, prepare each days’ activities and support travelers while on tour. As such, they must focus on the success of the group, and cannot provide individualized assistance to any one traveler.
  • On some departures, you will have a dedicated Tour Director in additional to your Driver Guides if your group size is over twenty.
  • You will have a different Tour Director in Zanzibar on the tour extension.
  • Round-trip flights booked through Go Ahead Tours arrive in and depart from Nairobi. A representative from Go Ahead Tours will meet you at the airport and take you to your hotel. Please remain in the arrival lounge, as the representative might be escorting one of your fellow travelers to the bus at the time of your arrival.
  • Transfers to and from the airport at your destination are included for travelers who have purchased their flights through Go Ahead Tours. Travelers who purchase their own flights may request airport transfers with Go Ahead Tours for an additional cost.
  • During your game drives, you’ll travel in a specially equipped 4x4 safari land cruiser. The vehicle is open, allowing for panoramic views. Window seats are guaranteed for all travelers. Transfers between parks are long and cross bumpy terrain, so we recommend bringing a small pillow to ease the ride.
  • A round-trip flight between Nairobi and Stone Town, Zanzibar, is included in the price of the tour extension.
  • Airlines impose varying weight restrictions on baggage. Some airlines may impose additional charges if you choose to check any baggage; be advised that you are responsible for any such costs.
  • Contact your airline for baggage size and weight restrictions for your flight, but please note that our travelers are restricted to one checked bag per person due to storage limitations on safari vehicles.
  • You’ll need one overnight bag, such as a backpack or small collapsible duffle bag.
  • One small carry-on bag is also permitted (it can double as your overnight bag).
  • Make sure you label your baggage and keep valuables, medication, and documents in your carry-on bag. Safari luggage restrictions are strict and strongly enforced. It’s essential that your luggage meet the following requirements: A soft, flexible duffel bag (absolutely no hard suitcases or bags with hard sides are permitted).
  • Your bags can be no larger than 34” W by 17” H by 15” L.
  • The total weight cannot exceed 44 pounds (including your camera equipment and carry-on bag).
  • Loose-fitting, layered clothing that can accommodate varying temperatures will be most comfortable. Quick-dry material is best for hot days outside, and a warmer layer may be needed for chilly evenings and early mornings.
  • Wear muted colors for game drives, as bright clothing may scare animals away and blue or black clothing attracts tsetse flies.
  • Comfortable closed-toes shoes, such as sneakers or lightweight hiking boots, are best for walking during the day.
  • Pack a swimsuit, as many of the hotels have pools that you are free to use at your leisure.
  • Sun protection is very important. Bring sunscreen, sunglasses, and a broad-brimmed hat to protect your face and the back of your neck from the sun.
  • Occasional rain showers are common during certain seasons, so lightweight rainwear may be necessary depending on the timing of your trip.
  • Mosquito repellent, binoculars, and a flashlight are highly recommended.
  • A small bottle of hand sanitizer may be helpful when facilities are not readily available while on the road.
  • The Kenyan government strictly bans plastic bags. It is illegal to use, sell, or carry plastic bags anywhere in the country under the new law, and violators will face charges, including high fines or imprisonment. Please bring reusable cloth bags if you plan to go shopping on tour, and do not pack any plastic bags, including small resealable bags.
  • At least 60 days prior to departure, check with your doctor or healthcare provider for the latest updates and entry requirements, or visit the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention website at cdc.gov .
  • Local governments may require proof of a yellow fever vaccination (often referred to as a yellow card) or a statement of medical exemption from the vaccine. This is only required of travelers arriving from a country with a risk of yellow fever virus transmission (this does not include the U.S. or Canada). Visit cdc.gov/yellowfever for more information.
  • If you’re traveling on the tour extension to Tanzania, you’re required to provide proof of a yellow fever vaccination (often referred to as a yellow card) or a statement of medical exemption from the vaccine.
  • Drink bottled water only. Refrain from ingesting tap water, including when brushing your teeth.
  • Avoid eating fresh fruits and vegetables unless they’re cooked or washed in clean water and peeled.
  • Bring a small first-aid kit, including antacids, anti-diarrhea medication, motion sickness medication, and any prescription medications in your carry-on luggage.
  • If you have medication that you take daily, be sure you have enough for each day of the tour and any possible delays encountered.
  • If you have dietary restrictions and/or food allergies, please notify Go Ahead Tours at least 30 days prior to your departure by logging in to your account and updating your traveler info. To update this information closer to your departure date, please call our Customer Experience Team.
  • Cuisine in your game lodges reflects the region’s British colonial influence—you may find that many locals pause for afternoon tea. Most restaurants offer curries and other South Asian cuisine brought over by the many Indian immigrants. Maize, sweet potatoes, and pineapple were brought over by the Portuguese, and beef has been a staple since the 1600s.
  • On the tour extension, spicy foods are common in Tanzania, and many dishes are infused with coconut milk. Meals often consist of maize, tender grilled meats, maize porridge, and local vegetables. Most restaurants offer curries and other South Asian cuisine brought over by Indian immigrants.
  • Kenya operates on the British standard 240 volts and uses a Type G plug with three large, flat pins.
  • Tanzania (on the tour extension) operates on 220-240 volts and uses a Type G plug with three large, flat pins.
  • We recommend packing a universal adapter, as well as a voltage converter if you plan on using your own hairdryer or other device without a built-in converter.
  • Not all of the hotels on this tour will have air conditioning.
  • Your hotels may provide hairdryers, irons, and other small appliances. However, these amenities cannot be guaranteed.
  • Power outages are common. In some of the camps, power is turned off in the late afternoon as well as in the early morning.
  • Wi-Fi is available in some hotels, though charges may apply.
  • There is no Wi-Fi on any of the motor coaches or safari vehicles.
  • Please contact your mobile service provider for information on roaming charges.
  • Kenya (and Tanzania on the tour extension) is three hours ahead of Greenwich Mean Time (GMT) and eight hours ahead of U.S. Eastern Standard Time (ET).
  • When it’s noon in New York, it’s 8pm in Nairobi.
  • The currency you’ll be using on your tour is the Kenyan shilling (and the Tanzanian shilling on the tour extension).
  • You may be able to purchase Kenyan shillings in advance from your local bank or a foreign currency exchange retailer, such as Travelex. There is no limit on importing currency into Kenya, but please note travelers are restricted from carrying more than $100,000 in Kenyan shillings out of the country (and cannot export more than $5,000 in Tanzanian shillings from Tanzania on the tour extension).
  • We recommend that you carry as little local cash as possible as well as small amounts of U.S. dollars (only crisp bills printed in 2004 or later).
  • ATMs are most readily available in Nairobi; while there, we recommend taking out cash in small bills to have on safari.
  • Major North American credit cards are accepted but can be difficult to use in remote locations (Visa is the most widely accepted).
  • International banks and businesses primarily accept debit and credit cards that work with the EMV chip system. If you do not already have at least one debit or credit card with a chip in it, we strongly recommend requesting one from your bank prior to your tour.
  • We suggest that you inform your bank and credit card company of your travel plans, so that they won’t confuse your international purchases for fraudulent charges.
  • At the conclusion of your tour, it is customary to offer your Driver Guide (and Tour Director if your group has one) a gratuity in US dollars.
  • We recommend tipping $10USD to $12USD per person per day for your Driver Guide and $2USD to $3USD per person per day for your Tour Director (if your group has one).
  • If applicable, we also recommend tipping $2USD per local guide.
  • Tips can only be paid in cash.
  • The cost of porterage is included in your tour price, and it is not necessary to tip baggage handlers.

What GAFFL Users Are Saying

Marie

"It’s really nice to have a platform like GAFFL with lots of travelers wanting to do the same as you, a real beautiful cultural exchange. You can meet people so easily and in a trustful way. We were four girls, from French, German and American backgrounds, without knowing each other from before. We spent an amazing week together, 2000km driving, camping on the way. We saw kangaroos, koalas, penguins and pelicans"

Saed

“I have found GAFFL to be an amazing tool for finding similar minded travel partners to embark on an adventure. Through GAFFL, I had organized a trip to Mexico City last month and Quazi joined the trip from Victoria, BC. We spent 14 days of straight exploring, hiking, eating and drinking. Quite an amazing experience - all thanks to GAFFL!”

Scarlett

"I accidentally scrolled across GAFFL and I'm so pleased I did. I met Amaia and immediately decided to road-trip together. We're spending 10 days together and it's great because we have so much in common. Couldn't have done it without GAFFL helping us find one another! It has honestly made NZ so much cheaper to explore as I get to split the costs with someone too"

What travelers are saying

"I've travelled with Intrepid in Vietnam, Morocco, Nepal and Egypt and had a brilliant time every time. The experience is better than most tours as you are in a small group that goes a bit more 'off the beaten track', and you don't get taken to endless shopping opportunites (i.e. a cousin's carpet shop). They also have higher ethics than most travel companies, they contribute to local charities and they avoid animal use (donkeys etc) where possible. The tour leaders we have had have all been wonderful, knowledgable and relaxed, with good english."

Going it alone: 10 of the best trips for solo travel

O nce the preserve of singletons and gap-year students, solo travel has recently taken on a shiny new look. Rather than a function of necessity or compromise, holidaying alone has become the ultimate indulgence in 2024: a rare chance in this ultra-demanding world to put one’s own needs and priorities first.

"Travelling solo is a liberating experience. It offers the chance to do what and go where you want, on your own terms," says Jonathan Frankham of World Nomads . "It also makes you more likely to branch out, forge deeper connections with others and discover more about yourself."

In short, people are now travelling solo not because they have to – but because they want to. Emboldened with a ‘now or never’ attitude post-pandemic and more confident than ever about spending time in solitude, travellers are busy booking their dream trips, regardless of life stage or relationship status. Many tour operators have noticed the trend: Scott Dunn reported a 30 per cent increase in solo bookings in 2023, while Black Tomato saw them almost double. In response to demand, many operators have launched solo travel collections or solo-specific departure dates, while others are waiving pricey single supplements.

The range of solo travel experiences on offer has broadened, too. You can tick off bucket list trips like hiking the Camino de Santiago or cruising to Antarctica that loved ones in your life might be reluctant to commit to – but also book self-care wellness breaks or enriching learning holidays. Some trips, such as those from Discover the World , let you dial up or down the amount of time you spend in a group environment, so you get both alone time and the reassuring safely blanket that comes with being around others.

A reassuring safe space can be especially appealing to solo female travellers , of which there are now more than ever. According to Student Universe 84 per cent of polled Gen Z women are interested in solo travel, while Craft Travel reports a 350 per cent increase in women-based adventure travel compared to last year. Founder of the latter, Julia Carter, says: "Women who we would have more often seen putting off ‘adventurous’ destinations until they had a partner or their partner’s schedule allowed are no longer holding back."

10 solo trips to try

Some trips are catered specifically to female travellers, including a special women-only departure of the Polar Bear Adventure in October 2024. There will be a female expedition leader at the helm when you journey on special ‘polar rovers’ to see the snow-white giants in the Churchill wilds, and you’ll have the chance to meet local indigenous women and hear about their lives on the arctic tundra too.
