Girls’ Generation, the Queens of K-pop, Are ‘Forever 1’

Portrait of Zoe Guy

The queens of K-pop have come to collect their things. Fifteen years after the release of their debut single, “ Into the New World ” — a hopeful track that lives on as a protest anthem — a reunited Girls’ Generation (SNSD) receive a much-deserved prize in the music video to “Forever 1,” arriving after the band’s five-year hiatus to pursue solo activities. The joyful single is off their seventh Korean-language studio album of the same name, out August 5. Written and produced by longtime collaborator Kenzie, a veteran hitmaker who worked closely with Girls’ Generation’s label SM for over two decades and composed “Into the New World,” the song recalls the optimistic energy of that very first release.

In the intervening years between releases, members Taeyeon, Sunny, Tiffany, Hyoyeon, Yuri, Sooyoung, Yoona, and Seohyun have spent time recording albums, acting, modeling, and just being famous — as captured in the glamorous music video which sees the eight-piece galavanting in private jets and performing together atop gilded parade floats and cruise ships. In between jet-setting and DJ sets at exclusive parties, the girls march down a long red carpet toward a trophy waiting on a pedestal for them. Leader Taeyeon collects the statue — it’s suspiciously shaped like the official Girls’ Generation fan club, SONE’s, heart logo — and the members burst into dance. It’s their generation; we’re just living in it.

Girls' Generation Into the New World promotional photo

Prior to their official debut, Girls' Generation was known as "Super Girls", a fan-made name that reflected how SM Entertainment touted the group as the female version of Super Junior . The group was announced to include members with diverse talents and language skills for future expansion into international markets.

Throughout its pre-debut period, the group saw many lineup changes. However, perhaps its best known pre-debut lineup consisted of 12 members: Soyeon , Taeyeon , Jessica , Tiffany , Hyoyeon , Yuri , Sooyoung , Yoona , Hajin, Seohyun , Hwanhee and Chanmi . However, Soyeon, Hajin, Hwanhee and Chanmi all left or were cut from the group. A final trainee, Sunny , was added to the group shortly before its debut.

2007: Debut with "Into the New World", first music show win, Girls' Generation [ ]

From July 7, 2007, through July 14, the debuting lineup of Girls' Generation was revealed, starting with Yoona, followed by Tiffany, Yuri, Hyoyeon, Sooyoung, Seohyun, Taeyeon, Jessica, and finally Sunny. On July 18, the group had their first public performance on Mnet's School of Rock . A week later, on July 27, a documentary titled Girls' Generation Goes To School captured the members as they prepared for their official debut.

Girls' Generation's debut single, " Into the New World ", was released on August 2, 2007. Three days later, the group held their debut stage at SBS' Inkigayo .

On October 11, Girls' Generation achieved their first-ever music show win with "Into the New World" on Mnet's M! Countdown . [1]

Girls' Generation made their first-ever comeback with the release of their first full-length album, Girls' Generation , on November 1, 2007. Its title track of the same name is a remake of Lee Seung-chul's 1989 hit song.

2008: "Kissing You", Baby Baby [ ]

Following the success of "Girls' Generation", in January 2008, the group began promoting "Kissing You" as their first studio album's second single. The music video for the song, released on January 14, featured a cameo from Super Junior's Donghae .

On March 17, 2008, a repackage of Girls' Generation , titled Baby Baby , was released. Afterwards, the members began solo promotional activities, thus sending the group into an indefinite hiatus period.

After 9 months of hiatus, in December 2008, SM Entertainment announced the group would make their comeback in January 2009.

On January 7, 2009, Girls' Generation released their first mini album, titled Gee , and its title track of the same name. The album's title track went on to become a cultural phenomenon; it claimed the number one position on Music Bank for a then-recording-breaking nine consecutive weeks. Furthermore, the song's "crab dance" choreography and skinny-jean styling set trends all over South Korea. [2] In 2011, "Gee" was crowned 'Song of the Decade' by MelOn.

Girls' Generation's second mini album, Tell Me Your Wish (Genie) , along with its title track of the same name, was released in June 2009. The physical album's release was delayed from June 25 to June 29 after controversy arose on the original artwork, which was then re-edited. Coincidentally, American pop star and global icon Michael Jackson died on the album's original intended release date while in the midst of rehearsals for the This Is It tour. Girls' Generation later paid tribute to him.

In October, Girls' Generation collaborated with labelmate f(x) for " Chocolate Love ", which served as a promotional single for LG's Chocolate cell phone.

On November 11, SM Entertainment announced that Girls' Generation would embark on their first-ever concert tour the following month. [3] Tickets for the tour went on sale on November 19 and sold out within three minutes. [4] The tour, titled Girls' Generation Asia Tour: Into The New World , initially consisted of two Seoul dates: December 19 and December 20. However, in order to meet fans' requests for additional concerts, two "encore" dates were announced in January 2010. [5]

On July 25, 2022, it was announced that the group would be coming back on August 8 with their seventh full length album, Forever 1 , and its title track of the same name . [26] The album was later certified Platinum by Circle Chart for selling over 250,000 units. [27]

To conclude Forever 1 's promotional cycle, the group held a special fanmeeting, titled 2022 Girls' Generation Special Event "Long Lasting Love" , at the KSPO Dome in Seoul on September 3.

Following Girls' Generation's 16th debut anniversary, on August 7, 2023, member Sunny announced via her personal Instagram that she had decided not to renew her contract with SM Entertainment. [28] Therefore, only four members of the group remain under SM: Taeyeon, Hyoyeon, Yuri and Yoona.

The MAIN Reason Why BLACKPINK 2022 Comeback Delayed to August

Along with their official announcement, YG Entertainment also revealed the main reason why they delayed BLACKPINK 2022 comeback to August. According to YG Entertainment, they needed some time to prepare for music that has BLACKPINK’s signature style. That is why it took some time for BLACKPINK to return as a full group.

“We have prepared and completed a lot of BLACKPINK-style music, which took much effort over a long period of time.” YG Entertainment.

It is no wonder since BLACKPINK has such a unique music style that is iconic to the group. That is why it takes extra effort and special skills to prepare such extraordinary music. Moreover, since BLACKPINK 5 th member, Teddy, has to handle two massive projects at the same time , BLACKPINK music has to be carefully and meticulously selected to fulfill its long-awaited anticipation.

Previously, BLACKPINK Jisoo mentioned that BLACKPINK would be having their comeback when the weather is a bit hotter. Today, Jisoo’s remarks have proven to be true!

According to YG Entertainment, they wanted BLACKPINK to reconnect with fans all around the world. BLACKPINK has been in an overly long hiatus that fans were afraid they might not survive the 7-year curse. Hence, YG is planning a world tour in 2022 for BLACKPINK to change this mindset. And the company promised it would be the BIGGEST world tour in the Kpop girl group history!

“To expand BLACKPINK’s emotional connection with fans all over the world, they will set out for the largest-scale world tour in K-pop girl group history until the end of the year along with their comeback.” YG Entertainment.

BLACKPINK Confirmed August Comeback Date & World Tour 2022: HUGE Increase in YG Entertainment Stocks

Following the confirmed August comeback and World Tour 2022 of BLACKPINK, there has been a HUGE increase in YG Entertainment stock price.

On July 7, Korean media reported that YG Entertainment’s stock price skyrocketed up to 10.1% following BLACKPINK comeback and world tour news. After all, BLACKPINK has contributed around 72% of YG Entertainment’s total sales. That is why their confirmed comeback is refreshing rain for the public after a long 1 year and 8 months of drought.

SEVENTEEN Successfully Completes “Be The Sun” World Tour In 29 Countries

Great job and congratulations on the success of your world tour, seventeen.

Powerhouse K-pop boy group SEVENTEEN successfully wrapped up their concert tour Be The Sun, delighting hundreds of thousands of fans around the world.

snsd world tour 2022

On December 28, the popular idol group held the final concert of their third world tour Be The Sun at Gelora Bung Karno Madya Stadium in Jakarta, Indonesia. The performance on this day was a stadium-level performance that was added thanks to the explosive response of the fans.

In the performance that day, the group started with the stage of the team’s representative hit songs, followed by the performance team, vocal team, hip-hop team, and leader’s unit stages filled with the charm of each unit. In particular, they performed flawlessly on stages that continued without breaks, demonstrating the ability to dominate the stage, worthy of being the “representative runners of K-pop performance.”

Lastly, the group performed their proprietary encore stage and thrilled the audience. Together with the fans who filled the concert hall, they surfed with lightsticks and had photo time, creating unforgettable memories with the fans.

At the end of the concert, SEVENTEEN said, “Thank you to all the Carats. The long Be The Sun tour, time seems to have gone by really fast and I think it will be a memorable concert. Next year, we will prepare for better performances. I hope that Carats’ day will be a little happier than ours.”

As a result, the 13-member group held 29 concerts in 22 cities over six months, starting with the Seoul concert held at Gocheok Sky Dome in Seoul on June 25 and 26, followed by an arena tour in North America and Asia, a dome tour in Japan, and additional performances in Asia.
