Simrad Cruise 7 Depth Finder Not Working? Try These 9 Fixes Now

simrad cruise 7 depth finder not working

While many users are skeptical about spending hundreds of dollars on a depth finder, no one can deny their utility in refining the fishing trip’s effectiveness. So, investing in a depth finder is a good idea if you’re struggling to find a better fishing spot.

Recently many users have been talking about the Simrad Cruise 7 Depth finder . It is a phenomenal unit that brings many features to the anglers.

However, there has also been a slight increase in the number of complaints regarding the functionality of your unit.

So, let’s cover a few of these common issues and how you can get around them if your Simrad Cruise 7 Depth finder is not working.

Simrad Cruise 7 Depth Finder Not Working?

  • Check Transducer Connection

The transducer connection is the first thing to check when your Simrad Cruise 7 depth finder is not working. The transducer sends the sound waves into the water to measure the depth.

If the transducer is not connected correctly, then the depth finder will not be able to function.

To connect it, first ensure the power is off to the depth finder. Next, locate the transducer port on the back of the unit . It will have a rubber grommet around it.

transducer

Take the transducer cable and insert it into the port. Push it in until it is snug . Once it is in, screws on the retaining nut to hold it in place. Finally, turn on the power to the depth finder and test it out .

  • Check Settings

If your transducer is connected correctly and you are still having issues , then the next thing to check is the settings. There are a few different settings that can affect the performance of the depth finder.

To access the settings, press the menu button for three seconds. This will bring up the main menu. Click the arrow keys to the “Settings” option and enter.

setting

The first setting to check is the “Depth Range.” This is how deep the depth finder will measure. If it is set too shallow, it will not pick up the deeper depths.

The following setting to check is the “Frequency.” This is how often the sound waves are sent out. A higher frequency will give you a more accurate reading but will also use more battery power.

The last setting to check is the “Transducer Type.” Make sure this is set to the correct type of transducer you use.

  • Adjust Sensitivity

If you are still having issues, the next thing to try is adjusting the sensitivity. The sensitivity controls how sensitive the depth finder is to sound waves.

To change it, press and hold the menu button for three seconds. This will bring up the main menu.

Click the arrow keys to the “Settings” option and enter. Then use the arrow keys to scroll to the “Sensitivity” option and press enter. You can then use the arrow keys to adjust the sensitivity up or down.

  • Restart Depth Finder

If you have tried all of the above steps and your depth finder is still not working, then the last thing to try is restarting it. To do this, press and hold the power button for three seconds.

restart

This will turn off the depth finder. Please wait a few seconds and then press the power button again to turn it back on.

  • Look for Corrosions

If you still have issues with your depth finder, there may be corrosion on the cable or the transducer itself. If this is the case, you will need to replace the cable or the transducer.

First, disconnect the transducer from the depth finder to identify corroded areas . Next, inspect the cable and transducer for any green or white buildup. If you see any, then that is corrosion.

To clean it off, you can use a wire brush or sandpaper. Once you have removed all the corrosion, reattach the transducer and try the depth finder again.

  • Perform a Cavitation Check

If you are still having issues with your depth finder, there is possible cavitation. Cavitation is when air bubbles form on the transducer. This can cause the depth finder to give inaccurate readings.

simrad cruise depth finder paused

First, disconnect the transducer from the depth finder to check for cavitation.

Next, place the transducer in a bucket of water. Turn on the depth finder and see if it gives accurate readings. If not, then there is cavitation present.

To fix this, you will need to clean the transducer. To do this, first, remove any dirt or debris from the transducer. Next, place the transducer in a bucket of clean water.

Add a few drops of dish soap to the water and stir it around. Let the transducer soak for a few minutes, and then remove it. Rinse it off with clean water and dry it with a soft cloth. Once it is dry, reattach it to the depth finder and try the depth finder again.

  • Speed Problems

One of the most common issues with this depth finder is that the unit will stop working once you increase the speed of your boat.

This situation can be tricky to deal with when you don’t know how to better manage the transducer’s location.

The best thing you can do to overcome this issue is to relocate the transducer to another position deeper in the water.

Relocating the transducer will simplify the unit’s work, as the water bubbles won’t interfere with its essential functions.

On the other hand, if you can’t relocate the transducer, then the only thing left to do is manage your boat’s speed to limit the water’s disruption.

speed

That way, you will get an accurate reading, and the unit will keep working flawlessly.

With that said, you can always call an expert to manage the depth finder installation better. It will eliminate the problems with depth reading while driving the boat.

Aside from the speed problems, users often complain about no depth reading even when the boat is not moving.

Most of the time, this issue can be traced back to a defective transducer, and you’ll have to either clean or replace the transducer to get everything working again.

If you bought the transducer a few months ago, you wouldn’t have to bother with extensive troubleshooting steps.

All you need to do to get around this problem is to remove the transducer from the housing and clean it with a dry cloth. Your primary focus should be removing all the marine growth and weeds from the bottom of your transducer.

That way, your transducer will be able to get accurate readings without running into interferences with the depth finder.Ideally, the issue should be fixed at this point, and your depth finder will start working perfectly.

connection broken

However, if you’re still running into the same problem and there is no reading on the unit, then there is a good chance that you’re dealing with broken connection points .

To fix this issue, you just need to fix the wiring and clean the corrosion from the connection points, and everything will be in order.

  • Issues with Shallow Water

Lastly, users have complained about struggling to manage the depth finder in shallow water.

If you’re in a similar situation and the unit just won’t show accurate readings on shallow water, then there is a good chance that you’ve not managed the sensitivity settings.

To avoid this issue, you must turn off the automatic settings and manually reduce these settings.

After reducing the sensitivity, you can cover the same area again; hopefully, you won’t have to bother with the same problems. You will be able to fix the issue in no time as long as your transducer is in perfect condition .

shallow water

Otherwise, you will have to clean the transducer and remove all weeds from the bottom section of your boat.

These were a few issues that users were struggling to manage while using the Simrad Cruise 7 Depth finder. Luckily, most of these issues can be easily fixed, but if you’re still unable to fix your unit, then your only option is to reach out to customer support.

Just call the company number and explain the issue to them. That way, you will be able to isolate the problem quickly, and the unit will keep working flawlessly.

SIMRAD or Transducer not reading Depth

My SIMRAD go5 unit is not reading depth. My SeaRay has just over 22 hours on it and has been having this issue with depth from the start of ownership. Very inconsistent readings and over the last month not reading at all and two weeks ago only 3 dashed lines are displayed. The unit has performed perfect other than this issue...Transducer is reading temperature so not sure it could be transducer, maybe a wire came loose but I have Had no luck trouble shooting. Any help would be greatly appreciated! Thanks

If it's a transom mounted transducer, usually that means the dealer didnt install it low enough to make sure it's always in the water. My 175 Sport had that issue and the dealer moved it down a bit to solve the inconsistencies.

I have the same boat and probably the same thru hull transducer. It has a dual range frequency (50 or 200 KHZ) and it defaulted to the 50 setting (needed for deep water). As soon as I went into the setup program and switched it to 200 KHZ all worked fine.

This is great information thanks so much I’ll get into the settings tmmrrw and give it a try. Thank you !!!

I’m wondering if a factory reset will accomplish same thing

  • Aug 22, 2019

I've got that same Simrad and have similar problems. With a p-79 Airmar it loses contact with the bottom in shallow water, just when you need it the most. Simrad said no cure for that setup.

We bought the boat brand new. It would have been set to factory specs at the beginning. That's why I thought the 50 KHZ was the factory setting. Ours now reads down to about 1.3 feet before it stops reading. I checked the ducer to get the model number, just to verify it was indeed a dual unit, but I don't remember what model it was now.

Update....just got back from the water, I factory reset my simrad go5 and it is NOW reading depth again. Turns out I was resetting my unit incorrectly.

So, your main screen should display temp, depth, etc. It also shows the ducer KHZ. What does it show now?

Was that what you were looking for? Oddly now however..:not reading water temperature... not really too concerned about that but defntly need to get this unit dialed in better for more consistent results.

  • Aug 24, 2019

Yes, you at 200 KHZ, which is what you should have for shallow water. I see you are reading metric. Is that what you want? Not that it makes any difference. I received no Simrad documentation with the boat, which was a disappointment. I was able to download a manual, but the content and completeness was lousy. I guess you just have to go thru all of the menus step-by-step and find out how to set up each parameter. I personally won't do a factory reset on anything because it removes any needed changes you made.

I didn’t receive any documents with boat as well. I don’t want metric and I can’t get an answer for what actual Airmar transducer I have ...Ill keep playing with it to see all of its capabilities and get it set up how I want. I switched temperature to F from c and now the water temp is stuck on 32 degreesat least I have depth...I think I’m going to continue to factory reset it and go through the advance personal set up

You can see the top of the ducer from inside the sunpad enclosure. Look down with a flashlight and you can read the model number.

simrad cruise depth finder paused

The transducer itself on the bottom of the boat… I’m pretty sure is a B series… It’s brass

Now I remember. The Simrad part number is not listed in the brochure. Its a "std", not a chirp model: http://www.airmar.com/productdescription.html?id=15

Yep, I had it narrowed down to about 3 models so that helps out.

Fast forward almost a year, still intermittent transducer and or Simrad issues. Now I get a depth reading probably 50% of the time I’m in the boat, no continuity whatsoever in regards to whether I’m going up on plane or idle sometimes it just reads for five minutes and goes off then other times that I read for 15 minutes, but I have no idea what’s going to happen each time I turn it on, I have a guy coming out to hopefully test my transducer next week

Simrad Evo3 NSS9: Not Reading Depth

simrad cruise depth finder paused

  • Add to quote

I have an ongoing problem with my MFD--doesn't read depth underway at all, and provides depth readings on and off while running off plane, etc. What could be causing this?

simrad cruise depth finder paused

Highly likely due to a needed transducer height adjustment. Post several photos of the install for better answers. It should read depth at any speed.

My new Evo3 did not read temp or depth. After several phone attempts with Simrad, I took back to dealer who installed on new boat. They got both depth and temp displaying in instrument bar for both chart and sonar. First time out since, displaying depth goes in and out without any rhyme or reason. It will read for a while and then quit for a while. Only installed Simrad on new boat to use the FMT card, which I absolutely love! Boat on way back to Dealer to either fix or remove off boat.

Sounds like the same issues I am experiencing.

The transducer is very sensitive to proper install height and location. If its off just a little it can read inconsistent. Mine reads at 50 mph with no issues. Expect several minor height adjustments before its dialed in. Its rarely right the first time.

I'll get some pic's up for folks to see. Thanks for the suggestions so far.

Not only are they adjustable and detachable, but they also have a retractable badge reel that can stretch up to 26 inches. This was perfect for swiping our ID cards at different occasions throughout the cruise. Plus, the lanyard itself is made of soft and lightweight material that didn’t irritate my skin at all. Trust me, you need these lanyards for your next cruise!
Hey guys, it’s Mark! I recently went on a Carnival cruise with my friends and we all had the Vzrflee Cruise Lanyards. These lanyards are compatible with all major cruise lines and they even come in a set of 4 with different colors and patterns. They make for the perfect gift for anyone going on a cruise (and trust me, you’ll want to keep one for yourself too!). Plus, the customer satisfaction team at Vzrflee is top-notch – they offer a 2-year worry-free professional service. I highly recommend these lanyards for your next adventure at sea!

As an avid boater, I have used various navigation systems over the years, but none have impressed me quite like the Simrad Cruise 9. After reading numerous reviews and doing my own research, I decided to invest in this chartplotter and I can confidently say that it was one of the best decisions I’ve made for my boat.

First and foremost, the Simrad Cruise 9 offers unparalleled ease of use. The interface is intuitive and user-friendly, making it simple even for beginners to navigate. It also comes with a variety of features such as CHIRP sonar, GPS mapping, and wireless connectivity that make it a versatile tool for any type of boating trip.

Another reason why Simrad Cruise 9 reviews are necessary is because it helps potential buyers understand the quality and reliability of the product. Reading about other boaters’ experiences with this chartplotter gave me confidence in my purchase and helped me make an informed decision.

Furthermore, reviews also provide valuable insight into any potential issues or problems with the product. This allows users to be aware of any bugs or glitches and take appropriate measures to avoid them. In my case, reading reviews helped me troubleshoot a minor issue with my device before it became a bigger problem.

In conclusion, Simrad Cruise

My Buying Guide on ‘Simrad Cruise 9 Reviews’

I recently purchased the Simrad Cruise 9 and it has completely changed my boating experience. With its advanced features and user-friendly interface, I can confidently say that this is one of the best fish finders on the market. After thorough research and personal experience, I have put together a buying guide to help you make an informed decision on whether the Simrad Cruise 9 is the right choice for you.

Key Features

The Simrad Cruise 9 comes with a variety of features that make it stand out from other fish finders. Some of its key features include:

1. Large Display: The Cruise 9 boasts a 9-inch LCD display with a high resolution of 800×480 pixels. This makes it easy to view even in bright sunlight.

2. CHIRP Sonar: This feature allows for better target separation and clearer images of fish and underwater structures.

3. Autotuning Sonar: The Cruise 9’s autotuning sonar automatically adjusts to changing conditions, providing you with accurate readings without having to manually adjust settings.

4. GPS Mapping: With its built-in GPS antenna, the Cruise 9 offers detailed mapping with preloaded US coastal charts. It also allows for waypoint marking and route planning.

5. Easy-to-use Interface: The Cruise 9 has a simple and intuitive interface, making it easy for beginners to use.

After using the Simrad Cruise 9 for some time, I have experienced several benefits that make it worth the investment. These include:

1. Accurate Readings: Thanks to its CHIRP sonar technology and autotuning feature, I have been able to get precise readings on fish and underwater structures.

2. User-Friendly: The interface is easy to navigate, making it perfect for both beginners and experienced boaters.

3. Large Display: The 9-inch display provides a clear view of underwater conditions, making it easier to spot fish and navigate through waterways.

4. Durable Design: The Simrad Cruise 9 is built with sturdy materials that can withstand harsh marine environments.

5. Value for Money: Despite its advanced features, the Simrad Cruise 9 is reasonably priced compared to other fish finders in its category.

While there are many benefits to using the Simrad Cruise 9, there are also some drawbacks that you should be aware of before making your purchase decision:

1. Limited Coverage Area: The preloaded maps only cover US coastal areas, which may be a limitation for those who boat in international waters.

2. No Networking Capabilities: Unlike other high-end fish finders, the Simrad Cruise 9 does not have networking capabilities or support third-party accessories such as radar or AIS units.

Final Thoughts

In my opinion, the Simrad Cruise 9 is an excellent choice for anyone looking for a reliable and user-friendly fish finder at a reasonable price point. Its advanced features provide accurate readings and make boating more enjoyable overall. However, if you often boat in international waters or require networking capabilities, this may not be the best option for you.

I hope this buying guide has helped you understand more about the Simrad Cruise 9 and whether it meets your needs as a boater. With its impressive features and benefits, I highly recommend considering this fish finder for your next purchase.

Simrad Cruise 5 Review-A Convenient and Reliable Chart Plotter

Eric larson.

simrad cruise 5 review

This is my Simrad Cruise 5 review.

I’ve spent most of my life leading fishing charters and taking clients out to catch some fantastic fish. One of the most essential items of tech I take with me on every trip is my fish finder. A quality fish finder will make the difference between a great day on the water and a terrible day.

My clients require me to provide great days on the water. The ability to find the fish and get to the right depth and speed is nearly impossible on a large body of water without a finder. Every experienced angler with a boat is going to have a quality fish finder.

The Simrad Cruise 5 is a user-friendly unit that works well in smaller boats. It is IPX7 waterproof rated and works well for kayaks and pontoon boats. I think the 5” screen is the perfect size for the smaller boat styles. It works well on smaller waters like lakes and pond fishing, where I thought it excelled.

Simrad Cruise 5 GPS Chartplotter

I’ve put together this list of comprehensive Simrad Cruise 5 reviews to highlight the features of this unit. There are some features offered here that will make your next trip exceptional. Several finders are available around the same price point, so let’s dig into what makes the Simrad Cruise 5 worthwhile.

Check out the Simrad Cruise 5 reviews below!

The Simrad Cruise 5 is a great charting and plotting unit. Boaters are going to love this. Simrad has limited the fishing technology to the minimum while adding everything a boater would want for navigation and a great time on the water.

Spending the day out on the water with family and friends is one of the best ways to take a break from the real world. The Simrad Cruise 5 will make that day run smoothly. Chart plotting is second nature to this device. Turn it on, and you’re ready to go. If you like to do a little fishing but don’t want to learn how to run a complicated fish finder, the Simrad Cruise 5 will give you the basics for the beginning angler as well.

There are good reasons to invest in a chart plotter like this if you aren’t an active angler. When shopping for a fish finder, ask yourself how often you fish from the boat compared to the amount of time you spend boating around the water with others. If you boat more than fish by a large margin, this might be a good option. If you fish far more than a boat, go with a unit that is more focused on angling.

The display on the Simrad Cruise 5 offers great visibility in an easy-to-read 5” screen. It’s viewable in sunlight and has a backlight feature for easy night viewing. The resolution is 800×480.

There are pre-programmed settings for views of charts, sonar, chart/sonar, navigation, sonar/navigation, and chart/navigation.

Turn the display on, and it loads right up. You don’t need to wade through all the fishing sonar information. It’s excellent for a boater or novice angler.

Charting/Plotting

Charting and plotting are where the Simrad Cruise 5 excels. The primary purpose of this unit is chart plotting. It provides reliable GPS navigation and simple depth readings with the flip of a switch.

All that’s needed to use the charting feature is to turn the device on, and the chart turns on. Without the fishing sonar getting in the way, the display is simple to read and easy to navigate.

The Cruise 5 comes preloaded with a worldwide base-map and can be upgraded to include C-MAP and Navionics to expand the map options.

There are hundreds of fishing maps out there that can be added to the device. Add this unit to your boat, and you’ll find yourself navigating the trickier portions of any lake or waterway you want with ease. Set waypoints as you go to remind yourself of any obstacles or other points of interest for the trip back.

Speed, depth, and temperature are tracked as well, so you can keep track of environmental information if you are out fishing and have a particularly good day. Keeping records of your trips will help you improve as an angler and help you nail down the best locations to visit the next time you hit the water.

The size of this unit makes it perfect for smaller vessels as well. It’s waterproof, which makes it a great choice for kayaks, personal watercraft, and pontoons. Small boats are a great option as well.

Alternatives

The Simrad Cruise 5 is an excellent choice for those searching for a navigation chart plotter. There are always alternatives out there, so let’s break down some options for you.

Garmin Striker 7sv

Garmin Striker 7SV with Transducer

The Garmin Striker 7sv offers so many features beyond the simple Simrad Cruise 5 for under $500.00 that if you’re an active angler, it’s your go-to finder. If you’re not an angler or only fish occasionally, the Cruise 5 is still a great choice.

Humminbird HELIX 5 CHIRP GPS G2

Humminbird HELIX 5 CHIRP GPS G2

The Helix 5 is an excellent option for those looking to get some great features and still keep the unit small enough not to overwhelm a smaller boat.

The Helix 5 is an outstanding finder for those looking for a good quality finder without spending a lot of money. It’s a good option for those looking at the Cruise 5. It has a built-in GPS and CHIRP sonar for under $300.00.

Garmin ECHOMAP UHD

Garmin ECHOMAP UHD 73sv

Find more fish using the ECHOMAP™ UHD 73sv combo with a bright, sunlight-readable 7” touchscreen with keyed assist. Preloaded LakeVü g3 inland maps with integrated Navionics® data cover more than 17,000 lakes with up to 1’ contours.

The ECHOMAP UHD has spectacular mapping opportunities. The ability to add detailed info to maps makes this one a great option to go in place of the Cruise 5 if that’s your goal. It also has some better fishing features of the finders in this price range, so you can’t go wrong.

The Verdict

The Simrad Cruise 5 is perfect for boaters. It simplifies the fish finder and removes the transducer, making it much more streamlined. This device is very user-friendly for those that want a device that makes charting a route for boating to be as simple as possible without all the fishing charts and sonar getting in the way.

If you are a boater or a novice angler without the need for a complex fish finder, the Simrad Cruise 5 is a great option. If you find yourself in either one of those categories, you can buy it here.

Cruising the Moskva River: A short guide to boat trips in Russia’s capital

simrad cruise depth finder paused

There’s hardly a better way to absorb Moscow’s atmosphere than on a ship sailing up and down the Moskva River. While complicated ticketing, loud music and chilling winds might dampen the anticipated fun, this checklist will help you to enjoy the scenic views and not fall into common tourist traps.

How to find the right boat?

There are plenty of boats and selecting the right one might be challenging. The size of the boat should be your main criteria.

Plenty of small boats cruise the Moskva River, and the most vivid one is this yellow Lay’s-branded boat. Everyone who has ever visited Moscow probably has seen it.

simrad cruise depth finder paused

This option might leave a passenger disembarking partially deaf as the merciless Russian pop music blasts onboard. A free spirit, however, will find partying on such a vessel to be an unforgettable and authentic experience that’s almost a metaphor for life in modern Russia: too loud, and sometimes too welcoming. Tickets start at $13 (800 rubles) per person.

Bigger boats offer smoother sailing and tend to attract foreign visitors because of their distinct Soviet aura. Indeed, many of the older vessels must have seen better days. They are still afloat, however, and getting aboard is a unique ‘cultural’ experience. Sometimes the crew might offer lunch or dinner to passengers, but this option must be purchased with the ticket. Here is one such  option  offering dinner for $24 (1,490 rubles).

simrad cruise depth finder paused

If you want to travel in style, consider Flotilla Radisson. These large, modern vessels are quite posh, with a cozy restaurant and an attentive crew at your service. Even though the selection of wines and food is modest, these vessels are still much better than other boats.

simrad cruise depth finder paused

Surprisingly, the luxurious boats are priced rather modestly, and a single ticket goes for $17-$32 (1,100-2,000 rubles); also expect a reasonable restaurant bill on top.

How to buy tickets?

Women holding photos of ships promise huge discounts to “the young and beautiful,” and give personal invitations for river tours. They sound and look nice, but there’s a small catch: their ticket prices are usually more than those purchased online.

“We bought tickets from street hawkers for 900 rubles each, only to later discover that the other passengers bought their tickets twice as cheap!”  wrote  (in Russian) a disappointed Rostislav on a travel company website.

Nevertheless, buying from street hawkers has one considerable advantage: they personally escort you to the vessel so that you don’t waste time looking for the boat on your own.

simrad cruise depth finder paused

Prices start at $13 (800 rubles) for one ride, and for an additional $6.5 (400 rubles) you can purchase an unlimited number of tours on the same boat on any given day.

Flotilla Radisson has official ticket offices at Gorky Park and Hotel Ukraine, but they’re often sold out.

Buying online is an option that might save some cash. Websites such as  this   offer considerable discounts for tickets sold online. On a busy Friday night an online purchase might be the only chance to get a ticket on a Flotilla Radisson boat.

This  website  (in Russian) offers multiple options for short river cruises in and around the city center, including offbeat options such as ‘disco cruises’ and ‘children cruises.’ This other  website  sells tickets online, but doesn’t have an English version. The interface is intuitive, however.

Buying tickets online has its bad points, however. The most common is confusing which pier you should go to and missing your river tour.

simrad cruise depth finder paused

“I once bought tickets online to save with the discount that the website offered,” said Igor Shvarkin from Moscow. “The pier was initially marked as ‘Park Kultury,’ but when I arrived it wasn’t easy to find my boat because there were too many there. My guests had to walk a considerable distance before I finally found the vessel that accepted my tickets purchased online,” said the man.

There are two main boarding piers in the city center:  Hotel Ukraine  and  Park Kultury . Always take note of your particular berth when buying tickets online.

Where to sit onboard?

Even on a warm day, the headwind might be chilly for passengers on deck. Make sure you have warm clothes, or that the crew has blankets ready upon request.

The glass-encased hold makes the tour much more comfortable, but not at the expense of having an enjoyable experience.

simrad cruise depth finder paused

Getting off the boat requires preparation as well. Ideally, you should be able to disembark on any pier along the way. In reality, passengers never know where the boat’s captain will make the next stop. Street hawkers often tell passengers in advance where they’ll be able to disembark. If you buy tickets online then you’ll have to research it yourself.

There’s a chance that the captain won’t make any stops at all and will take you back to where the tour began, which is the case with Flotilla Radisson. The safest option is to automatically expect that you’ll return to the pier where you started.

Best of Moscow by high speed train

Sure would appreciate someone who has taken "Best of Moscow by high speed train" from St. Petersburg could please share their impressions of this shore excursion. From the description this sounds like a very long day.

Wondering how the 4 hour train trip was in terms of accommodations, etc. Also what time did you leave the ship and what time at night did you return? Were both legs of the trip on the high speed rail (I read that slower trains also travel the same tracks)?

My wife and I are considering this excursion. We thought that if we are making all the effort to go to Russia then how could we pass up going to Moscow, walking in Red Square, seeing St. Basil, etc.

If you are considering this on the 2015 June Baltic cruise on Voyager; my suggestion is don't. There is so much to do in St. Petersburg and although a train is one of my favorite ways to travel the time would be far better spent in St. P.

Thanks for the advice. Yes, this would be on the Voyager during the 2015 season but not yet sure exactly which cruise.

We did the Moscow excursion "on a different luxury line", but from your brief description it sounds very much like the same trip, so I will operate on that assumption. It is a VERY long day! We left the ship at 5:30 AM and returned at 12:30 AM. The highspeed train trip is comfortable, and while they call it "Business Class" it does not compare well to the equivalent class on say Rail Europe. When we did it in 2011, we did have highspeed both ways, and the trip back seemed much longer as the adrenaline and excitement had worn off!:D

Moscow itself is not that terribly different from any other big city in the world, but this Cold War kid never thought he would ever stand in Red Square, never mind walk the grounds of The Kremlin, or tour The Kremlin Palace, or see (but not visit) Lenin's Tomb, or visit The Armoury. But he did, and he loved every minute of it! Yes, it is a long day, and you barely scratch a scratch on the surface, but it is worth it. There is a tremendous amount to see in St. Petersburg, but every Baltic cruise goes to St. Petersburg, so you can go back if you choose to. Not every cruiseline offers you the chance to see Moscow.

RachelG

I have not personally done this tour, but our last time in St Petersburg, the private guide that we hired for a day was leading the regent tour to Moscow on the high speed train the next day. He said it was way better than the previous alternative, which was flying to Moscow and back. He said that you actually got to Moscow faster because you didn't have to deal with airline checkin etc. it did seem like a very long day to me, and there is so much to see and do in st. Petersburg that I didn't consider doing it.

We toured to Moscow from St. Petersburg via the hi-speed SAPSAN train last September, from a Baltic cruise on the Oceania Marina. You need to have a two-night, three day port call in St. Petersburg to take this tour because the tour typically leaves the ship around 5:00 - 5:30 AM and doesn't return until after midnight the next day. We didn't take the ship's tour; we made private arrangements with TravelAllRussia for three days of touring, the first and third days in St. Petersburg and the second day the tour to Moscow by train. Our cost for the private tour for three days was about the same as what the ship charged for the excursion to Moscow alone. There are a number of private tour agencies that operate in St. Petersburg and offer the Moscow train tours; we would strongly recommend them over the ship's tours.

All three days had private guides with car and driver. The second day, the driver picked us up at the ship and took us to the train, but we were alone on the train, and met in Moscow by the guide on the station platform. After our tour and dinner, we were brought back to the train and after the return train trip met by the driver and taken back to the ship. Because you are alone on the train you must have your own Russian visas.

If this is your first visit to St. Petersburg, I would agree there is much more to see there. We found Moscow somewhat a disappointment, particularly Red Square. The Kremlin and the cathedral in Red Square were also worth seeing. But the best thing we saw was the Moscow subway! I worked for the Washington Metro system back in the 1980s as it grew from 40 to 80 miles and although I was in the computer area, I learned a lot about the challenges of running a subway system. We used the Moscow system to get across the city from where we had dinner to the train station, and I was amazed at the cleanliness', speed of operation, the short headways maintained, and the courtesy of everyone involved. A very impressive experience!

We had been to St. Petersburg before, and so had the time to take a day and go to Moscow. Also, I really like trains, and the SAPSAN is a German train set running on Russian rails. Seats are like first class domestic air, spacious but not too plush or comfortable, but with enough room. Not too much recline, and almost 8 hours on the train in two shots is a lot for an old man. They come through and sell drinks, candy, etc. but the sellers don't speak English and no one around us helped, so we had just poor coffee once coming, and brought stuff with us for the trip back. Not too much to see from the train either, particularly on the return when it is night the whole way.

If you decide to go, take a private tour and avoid the overly expensive ship's tour. I'm glad we did it, but wouldn't bother to repeat the tour; we've seen Moscow.

Thanks so much to all of you for the thorough and thought insight. Yhe information you have provided is most helpful.

countflorida: Your detailed post is very helpful. We are not quite ready for a Baltic cruise but should do so within a year. Time enough to do our pre travel research, bookings and visa gathering.:) Thank you!

From the description this sounds like a very long day.   Wondering how the 4 hour train trip was in terms of accommodations, etc. Also what time did you leave the ship and what time at night did you return? I did this on Seabourn. IMO DONT. Take Aeroflop (er Aeroflot). The train has non folding seats where you are literally knee to knee with your fellow passenger (facing each other). Further they don't believe in air conditioning. It's also the worlds slowed bullet train. I think I would have found more enjoyment wandering around the St. Petersburg and Moscow airports.

Countflorida,

This is a little off topic,, however we had planned a river cruise in Russia but decided we would rather stay on land and have booked about two weeks with Travel-All-Russia using the private guide and driver. I'm curious as to how you found them as a tour company.

The guides they provided were fine. We had a different guide each of the days in St. Petersburg, but both were flexible, pleasant, knowledgeable and spoke English very well, as did the guide in Moscow, incidentally. She was a bit aloof, distant, not too friendly, but otherwise fine. In fact, she was the one who suggested taking the Metro, which unexpectedly became one of the highlights of the Moscow excursion. If I have a complaint with AllTravelRussia, it is with their plan and its execution (more later).

I had requested emphasis on World War II (in Russia, the Great Patriotic War) sites and info. In scheduling us, they weren't careful about dates and a couple of the sites we wanted to see were scheduled on the third day, after we'd been to Moscow. But both sites were closed that day of the week, and that info was readily available, right on web sites describing them. Also, the included meals (lunches in St. Pete, dinner in Moscow) were not what we asked for: light meals with some choices, so we could avoid things we didn't like and choose things we did like. My request was ignored; we were given full Russian meals with a fixed menu, no choice. On the first day, a fish dish was the entre, but I am allergic to fish. Fortunately, I had the e-mail I'd sent with me and showed it to the guide, and she was able to change my entre to chicken, which was very good actually. But we didn't want a 3-4 course lunches or dinner (in Moscow). We had the guide drop the lunch the third day, although we never got any credit or refund. But, particularly in contrast to the ship's tours, the prices were so reasonable we didn't worry too much about it.

The people who were on the ship's tour to Moscow saw us boarding the same train for which they were forced to queue up and wait on the way back, and asked us what we had done. I was candid and open so they were not happy when I explained what we had arranged and particularly what it had cost. Also, when we returned to the ship, we found they had laid on a late supper for those who had gone to Moscow, so up we went and had something. Well, it turns out the late supper was supposed to be just for those on the ship's tour, but we and others on 'independent' tours, there were a dozen or more of us, crashed the party, actually got there first, and they didn't realize it until the larger group arrived and there weren't enough tables/places set. By that time, the 'independents' had all gotten served and were eating; what could they do?

A couple from the larger group sat down with us and asked us about our tour, and they were the ones I told about our arrangement and its cost. They turned to others who’d been with them and announced the details, loudly enough so the whole room heard, which started a lot of bitching and complaining. I gathered they weren't very happy with the ship's tour to begin with, and this was the straw that broke the camel's back. We finished up and beat it out of there, but overheard later that one of the excursion staff came to check on something and ran into a real mess. I caught a cold on the trip, which forced me to bed the second day following in Tallinn, so by the time we reappeared we heard about the contretemps' but apparently no one recalled who started it, thankfully.

Because of what happened to us, I would probably not use AllTravelRussia if I were to go again, or if I did, I would be sure to get confirmation of every detail of the tour. They do have good reviews generally, and we were certainly helped by their visa department and liked the guides and drivers. Their weakness, I say now with full 20:20 hindsight, is that once the sales person who plans the tour, sells it to you and collects your money, he (or she) transfers the plan to their Russia office for implementation; there is no follow-up to make sure it gets done right. And that is where our problems arose; we paid for a custom tour but got a standard package with a few destinations switched, and no one checked them out, even to see when they were open the day we were scheduled to go. If you check every detail that’s important to you, it should be OK, but that’s a hell of a way to have to do business, in my opinion.

Thank you for the 20/20 hindsight observation on your Russian tour operator, and better priced than the ship's excursion cost.

Thanks very much for the feedback.

We had the same experience as you so far as price. We originally booked a Viking Cruise but, hearing some things about the river cruises that made us unhappy, looked into other options. T-A-R cost the same or less than a cruise and had us in hotels for 11 days. We opted for the private tour. They have three tour levels, based on hotels. We originally opted for the four star as it did not cost much more than the three star hotels. Finally we decided to throw it all in and upgraded to five star. In Moscow we will be at the newly opened Kempinsky which is two blocks from Red Square. In St. Petersburg it is the Grand Hotel Europe, one of the most vaunted luxury hotels in Russia. Location is important for us as the tours use up only part of the day so being in the center of everything for our independent touring is important. As with many other cities, the less you pay, the farther out of the center of town you are.

We have been working with our salesman in D.C. and he seems to get back to us with the changes we want. He recently returned from Russia so is up on everything. When I asked they said they paid the full TA commission if I wanted so I got my usual TA on board so he is watching our back and giving us that extra level of comfort. He also set up our air, which I know pays him little or nothing, and got us business class for much less than T-A-R wanted for economy, though it took working for a while with a consolidator. He's happy to get his 10 percent on this trip without having booked it. He also took care of the trip insurance. We've been doing a lot of research on the CC sister site Trip Advisor and will write a report there. We will, I guess, become a source of info for CC members after having spent 5 days in Moscow and 6 in SP.

Kremlin

Moscow : The first day is arrival day. You are welcome on board! Check in starts at 14:00 (2.00 PM), but you may arrive earlier or later on that day. If you order a transfer you will be met at the airport or train station by one of our drivers and taken by a comfortable car to the river port where you will board your cruise ship (transfer is OPTIONAL).

Over the next few days you will have a chance to explore Moscow and learn about its riveting history. You will be taken on a city tour where you will see Moscow's most interesting sights and learn about this amazing city's past and present. You will also have a chance to do some light shopping and there will be time to relax aboard the ship in the evenings. One of the highlights of your time in Moscow is a visit to Red Square  and the Kremlin . You will also visit one of the Kremlin's famous cathedrals. The Kremlin as we know it today was rebuilt as a stone structure during the beginning of the 14th century but the actual site had been inhabited and used as a fortified city wall for centuries before this period. The Kremlin is truly a fascinating structure - at the same time it is an ancient tower, the city's former military fortification, a palace and the workplace of the Russian President. The Kremlin is the center of Russia's political life and State power and has been home to Tsars, General Secretaries of the Soviet Union and Russian Presidents.

Moscow is Russia's political and financial capital as well as a major world class cultural center. The city includes many must see attractions from the Kremlin and Red Square to the Assumption Cathedral. Moscow is the largest city in Europe. It is unique in that it blends the ancient with the modern. See medieval structures among modern office buildings, walk down crooked old city streets opening up to wide busy boulevards. It is a fantastic city and truly a site that shouldn't be missed.

Uglich : You will be taken to the walking city tour with visit to Kremlin , the Church of St. Demitrius on the Blood and the Transfiguration cathedral .

Uglich was founded in 1148 as a small princedom bordering on Muscovy, Uglich is one of the most beloved towns in Old Russia. The view of the town as you approach it from the Volga River is breathtaking with the Cathedral of the Resurrection and St. John´s Church rising up on the horizon. The history of the town is fascinating; At the end of the 16th century, Maria Nagaya, seventh wife of Ivan the Terrible, lived in honorary exile at the Kremlin in Uglich. It was here in her garden that the 10 year old Prince Dmitry of the Rurik Dynasty, heir to the Russian throne was murdered by Boris Godunov who wanted to seize power for himself. On the spot of his death, the Church of St. Demitrius of the Blood was built and still stands today. The death of Prince Dmitri brought on the start of the Time of Troubles, a dynastic and political crises and one of the most tumultuous periods in Russian history which ended 15 years later after the election of a new Tsar Mikhail Romanov (the first Tsar of the Romanov Dynasty). Inside the Kremlin the oldest building in Uglich, the Palace of Tsarevich Dmitry also stands. During your time in Uglich you will learn more about the town's past and walk along the paths of Russian history.

Yaroslavl : You will be taken to the panoramic city tour with a visit to a local market (free time). You will also see the Church of Elijah the Prophet (exterior), Church of St Nicholas (interior) and enjoy an interactive tour of former Governor's House (and visit to an Art Gallery).

Yaroslavl : Stretching for 18 miles on both banks of the Volga , Yaroslavl is an important Volga port with a population of 600,000. It was founded in the 1010 by Prince Yaroslav the Wise and is one of the ancient Russian cities making up the Golden Ring . It was destroyed by the Tatars in the 13th and 14th centuries but then restored and rebuilt and by the 17th century it had become Russia's second largest city after Moscow and an important cultural and political center. Today, Yaroslavl retains many noteworthy monuments of its colorful past. Of special interest is the magnificent 13th century Spassky Monastery ensemble, a group of majestic 17th century cathedrals, an elegant rotunda and remnants of an ancient trading center. The churches of St. Nicholas and Elijah the Prophet have some of the Golden Ring's most impressive frescoes.

Goritsy : You'll tour the St. Cyril on the White Lake Monastery and Museum of Icons .

Goritsy is a tiny settlement 7 kilometers from the St. Cyril on the White Lake Monastery. The remains of the Nunnery of the Resurrection that sits on the banks of the Sheksna River can be visited and is within a quarter of a mile of where the ship stops. Goritsy is definitely a site to see for anyone with an interest in Russian history. St. Cyril on the White Lake was founded in 1397 by Kirill Belosersky on the shore of Lake Siverskoye. The monastery had wide trade in the 15th to 17th centuries and was used as a fortress to protect Russia's nobility during the Times of Troubles.

After the tour you will return to your ship and set sail in the direction of St. Petersburg along the Volga Baltic Canal. The Volga Baltic Canal is a series of canals and rivers that connect the Volga river to the Baltic Sea.

You'll cruise along Europe's second largest lake, Lake Onega and arrive on the island of Kizhi . Here you will visit a fascinating open air museum containing numerous examples of elaborate Russian, wooden architecture.

Kizhi Island : Via the Volga Baltic Canal, our cruise takes us to the tiny island of Kizhi, located at the northern end of Lake Onega. The island is renowned for its open-air Museum of Architecture , which is assembled from over 80 monuments of wooden architecture from various areas of the country and restored to form a glimpse of the past. The most impressive site on the island is the Church of the Transfiguration or Preobrazhenskaya (the church of twenty-two wooden domes). This masterpiece of architecture, featuring five tiers of 22 domes, was built in 1714 without the use of a single nail, only an axe and pine trees. The church magically changes color as the day grows old, it is certainly one of the most interesting things you will see during your time in Russia.

Mandrogui : Enjoy walking around this traditional Russian village in its beautiful setting and spending a day of rest, relaxation and fun. We will have a fantastic barbeque picnic on the banks of the river featuring one of Russia's favorite specialties - shashlik (meat shish kebab prepared on an outdoor fire). You will love it!

Mandrogui : is really more of a living museum than a live-in village. It features a collection of old wooden houses and is geared towards showing visitors what a traditional Russian village resembled in the past. One of the features here is the Vodka Museum, which contains thousands of different brands and types of Russia's favorite pastime.

Peterhof

St. Petersburg : Your time in St. Petersburg will begin with a Panoramic City Tour . This tour is the best way to get acquainted with all of the city's major highlights. Our professional guide will take you down Nevsky Prospect , St. Petersburg's most famous and vibrant thoroughfare. There you will see some of the city's most interesting architectural monuments including the Kazan Cathedral (exterior) and the Winter Palace. You will see the Peter and Paul Fortress (interior) - a symbol of St. Petersburg and also the oldest building in the city.

One of the highlights of your entire cruise will be a visit to the Hermitage , Russia's premier museum containing one of the largest art collections in the world. The museum consists of five historical buildings including the Winter Palace - the residence of the Russian Tsars. The museum contains over 3 million pieces of art with dates ranging from high antiquity to the present day. Among the Hermitage's treasures are artworks by Leonardo da Vinci, Raphael, Titian, Rembrandt, Rubens and many others.

During your time in St. Petersburg you will also visit Peterhof - former summer residence of the Russian Emperors, located on the shore of the Gulf of Finland. You will see the Lower Park - a genuine masterpiece of landscape design which can compete with Versailles in France. The park includes over 150 fountains and 4 monumental cascades.

On the last day of your cruise you will say goodbye to Russia, your ship's crew and the many new friends we are sure you will have met during your time with us. We are sure that your memories of the trip will last a lifetime and we look forward to welcoming you to Russia sometime in the future. Our driver will meet you at the ship and take you to the airport to see you off (transfer is optional).

St. Petersburg is Russia's second largest and second most important city - the Northern capital of the country, Russia's cultural center, and considered the world's "Northern Venice" due to its extensive system of canals and islands. Walk along Nevsky Prospect and experience the grandeur of pre-revolutionary imperial Russia. Pass palaces from the past and gaze at the famous embankment of the Neva River with its numerous bridges and striking architecture. St. Petersburg is also home to Russia's largest and busiest port and with its many world class theaters and museums has a very high level of cultural life
