King Buzzo, a.k.a. Buzz Osborne, is the singer, guitar player and founder of the enormously influential band, the Melvins. His innovative approach to songwriting, and guitar playing, has influenced countless musicians, and turned leagues of music lovers into ardent fans. Renowned for his pioneering use of down-tuned strings, Buzzo masterfully blended his punk and metal influences, and in turn, he created a groundbreaking new sound in heavy music. Over Osborne’s extensive career, which originated in the small hamlet of Montesano, Wash. in 1983, he has released over 30 albums under the Melvins’ moniker, two solo albums [Gift of Sacrifice (2020) and This Machine Kills Artists (2014)], as well as a number of collaborative projects including Fantômas and Crystal Fairy.

Trevor Dunn might be most widely known for his work with Mr. Bungle, the eclectic and unpredictable Northern California band he co-founded in 1985, but his career outside of Mr. Bungle has been just as notable. Also a member of Fantômas, Trevor Dunn’s Trio-Convulsant, Tomahawk and Melvins Lite, Dunn has also written music for various ensembles, performed extensively with John Zorn, and recently formed Riverworm Records , a label home for “discarded, forgotten, and misunderstood music.”

TARANTULA HEART - New Album announced for release April 19th, 2024

The Melvins latest opus, Tarantula Heart (April 19, Ipecac Recordings), is quite possibly the band’s most unconventional, catchiest and imaginative work yet, continuing a legacy celebrated for its eccentric and extraordinary output.

A preview of the five-song, 39-minute collection arrives with the release of “ Working The Ditch ,” and the accompanying Jesse Nieminen-created video . Nieminen previously directed the band’s short film, “A Walk With Love and Death.”

“The way we approached Tarantula Heart was different than any other Melvins’ album,” explains Buzz Osborne. “I had Dale and Roy Mayorga come in and play along with Steven and I to some riffs, then I took those sessions and figured out what parts would work and wrote new music to fit. This isn’t a studio approach we’ve ever taken. Usually we have the songs written BEFORE we start recording!”

“The majority of Tarantula Heart has dual drum parts,” adds long-time Melvins drummer Dale Crover. “Roy is an amazing drummer. We would discuss what we would do pattern wise, then we’d just go for it. Improvising riffs and trading off on drum fills.”

In actuality nothing appeared out of thin air. Buzz spent hours and hours with the drum tracks by himself writing songs to what he was hearing drum wise. “When the rest of the band heard these songs I’d created from the sessions, they were blown away,” Buzz shares. “These were fully developed new songs that they’d never heard before that had seemingly appeared out of thin air. Presto!”

Recorded, mixed and co-produced by longtime Melvins’ collaborator Toshi Kasai, the album also features We Are The Asteroid guitar player Gary Chester. Gary and the Melvins’ history goes back to their days on Boner Records, with the guitar player formerly having been a part of the legendary band, Ed Hall.

Tarantula Heart pre-orders are available now , with the album available on a trio of vinyl variants (black, indie exclusive Silver Streak and Ipecac Recordings’ 25th Anniversary Puke Green), featuring a 12-page booklet, as well as on CD and digitally.

Next month sees the Melvins head overseas, playing in Japan for the first time since 2019 following a stint where they join current labelmates, Mr. Bungle, for a trek across Australia and New Zealand. Buzz and Bungle bass player Trevor Dunn team up later this year for the “King Dunn Tour,” a 45-date excursion that sees the pair play songs from the King Buzzo releases: This Machine Kills Artists and Gift of Sacrifice. Matt Cameron announces Gory Scorch Cretins collaboration with Melvins

Matt Cameron (Pearl Jam/Soundgarden, etc) recorded a 5-song vinyl exclusive with Buzz, Dale, Steven and Toshi for Record Store Day – get it this Friday after Thanksgiving at your favorite local record store! More details at Revolver .

Matt says: "I have always been a massive Melvins fan. They are a huge influence on me as a musician and a big part of our early Seattle music scene. I reconnected with the Melvins in 2019 when they performed at the Chris Cornell tribute concert in LA. I emailed Buzz after and asked if he, Dale, Steven and Toshi could help record some songs I had written and they were totally up for it. I also collaborated with Nate Yaccino and Meagan Grandall on this project. I decided to pay tribute to the Melvins by reimagining the artwork/title for their seminal release Gluey Porch Treatments. Enjoy! "

Today the Melvins announced the “Twins of Evil Tour,” a seven-week trek that sees them co-headlining with Japanese trio Boris , both performing classic albums in their entirety: Bullhead (Melvins) and Heavy Rocks (Boris).

“40 years as the Melvins!!! What better way to celebrate that unlikely milestone than by setting off on the ‘Twins of Evil Tour’ with our friends, Boris," says King Buzzo. "This will be a stone groove!” Boris’ Takeshi adds: “Could anyone have predicted such an astonishing event, that Boris and the Melvins would tour the entire USA together? Since the mid-1980s, the Melvins have had an enormous influence on artists of all genres not only limited to heavy music, and have brought forth a surge of faithful followers over the years. Needless to say, Boris is just one of these many bands influenced by the mighty Melvins, and we took our name from a song title off of the 1991 album, Bullhead.”

THE MELVINS , who are wrapping up a sold-out tour with MINISTRY , will return to the road this summer for a headlining trek dubbed "The Electric Roach Tour" , the hard-working band's first headlining run since 2019.

THE MELVINS are one of modern music's most influential bands. Having formed in 1983 Montesano, Washington, the group founded by Osborne (with stalwart drummer Dale Crover joining the following year),has been credited with merging the worlds of punk rock and heavy music, forming a new subgenre all its own. Over the band's nearly 40-year history, they've released over 30 original albums, numerous live full-lengths and far too many to count singles and rarities. In the course of their discography, they've partnered with Jello Biafra , MUDHONEY and FANTÔMAS for individual releases and toured the world many times over. In fact, the band had the misfortune to be in both Christchurch and Tokyo for their 2011 earthquakes. In 2012, THE MELVINS completed the "51 States In 51 Days" (50 states +DC) tour, which was chronicled in the film "Across The USA in 51 Days" . The current incarnation of the band is Osborne , Crover and Steven McDonald ( REDD KROSS / OFF! ). Previous lineups include a pairing of Osborne and Crover with BIG BUSINESS bandmembers Jared Warren and Coady Willis , a four-piece featuring the current trio plus BUTTHOLE SURFERS ' Jeff Pinkus , as well as MELVINS LITE , which partners Osborne and Crover with MR. BUNGLE 's Trevor Dunn . Sometimes, if you're extra lucky, one version of THE MELVINS will open for THE MELVINS .

American alternative metal/hardcore punk band, Melvins, originally formed in Montesano, Washington, and currently consists of Buzz Osborne, Dale Crover, Jared Warren and Coady Willis.

Formed in 1983 by high school mates, Buzz Osborne (guitar/vocals), Matt Lukin (bass), and Mike Dillard (drums). They started off playing cover songs of Jimi Hendrix and Cream, and experimenting with hardcore punk music. Dillard decided to move on, who was soon replaced by Dale Crover. In 1985 C/Z Records was created and released their first album that featured four songs, and then in 1986 the band released their own debut EP, followed by their full-length album “Gluey Porch Treatments” in 1987.

In 1990 the band recorded and released “Bullhead” followed by a tour of Europe. In 1993 they were signed by Atlantic Records, releasing their first major label album “Houdini;” however, they were dropped three albums later. The band then signed with Amphetamine Reptile Records, and released their next album “Honky” in the same year (1997). The years to follow found the band re-mastering old songs, returning to old sounds, and in 2003 Atlantic Records (UK) released a compilation track of their top hits when the band was signed with Atlantic.

In Fall 2006 the band set out on tour to promote their newest album “(A) Senile Animal” and in July 2008 released “Nude With Boots.” After a series of tours and a few more albums, the band also had a side project called Melvins Lite consisting of Dunn, Dale and Buzz). Melvins Lite went on a record breaking tour in 2012, performing every night for 51 days. On 14 July 2014 the band announced their newest album “Hold It In.”

Live reviews

When someone mentions the grunge genre attention is immediately turned to Nirvana, Mudhoney, Soundgarden, Pearl Jam, etc… but often time people forget one of the true pioneers of the genre, The Melvins.

While they’re not strictly a grunge band, they share many elements of the genre along with aspects of metal, alternative, punk and hardcore. The sludgy rock band has been together for nearly 30 years and are still performing live and putting on great shows as well.

Buzz Osbourne, the lead guitarist, vocalist, and all around interesting guy is one of the most unique front man in rock ‘n roll. Even if you’re not familiar with his music, you more than likely know him by his Side Show Bob hairstyle.

While the band isn’t as hard around the edges as they used to be, the more senior members are all near 50 years old at this point, they’re still able to pull off a crunching live set. Most of their shows these days tend to flip between electric and acoustic elements. It’s a nice change of pace and you get to hear re-worked versions of some classic songs like “Shevil,” “Eyes Fly,” and “Inner Ear Rupture” amongst others.

The Melvins aren’t as nasty as they used to be, but they’re every bit as exciting still.

Report as inappropriate

There is a large debate when discussing the Melvins, what is bigger? The blistering metal guitar riffs or lead singer Buzz Osbourne's hair. The group's music has been described as a variety of things over the years including sludge metal, doom metal, stoner rock, drone metal and grunge. With labels like this attached you have some sort of understanding of the tone the band achieves when performing live. It is a somber, dark affair with the band filing onto stage in a manner similar to a funeral procession.

Through the gloom comes thumping drums, piercing percussion and that synonymous vocal of Buzz that is unlike many of his contemporaries. The group that formed over three decades ago is intent on showcasing two of its most critically acclaimed albums this evening 'Stoner Witch' and 'Bullhead'. These are performed in a two set mentality and the crowds are delighting in this solid choice, a clear winner with the early fans. The music is played in a reimagined order yet sounds equally good. It is clear as to why Melvins have had such a detrimental influence on the Seattle grunge from where they were formed.

The music was outstanding. Of course, the Melvins put on a great show with every single note hitting like a truck, both volume and delivery-wise. Maybe one of the best parts about their bass heavy sound might be the fact that they can get a lot louder than most bands without leaving your ears ringing for the next few days; it's the mid-range that's dangerous to hearing. Their opener, Helms Alee, was wonderful as well. That may have been the first time I was genuinely enamoured by an opening set. Their sound was somewhat psychedelic and definitely heavy, which led into the Melvins quite well. They joined the Melvins on stage for a fantastic finale: two basses, two guitars, and two drums. The only thing that I couldn't stand about the show was the crowd. The mosh pit was far too wide, was more slippery than an ice rink, and was filled with only 200+lb guys. I love mashing, but I also love being alive. There were also some older guys who were drugged out and trying to start fights, but the security couldn't even calm them down. That was all annoying, but the band's more than made up for it.

The Melvins concert in Dallas, Texas at Trees was one concert I will never forget. The concert venue was small creating an intimate setting which makes for great sound and acoustics. The Melvins are a group which do not talk much on stage, but make up for it sure power and energy (who wants to hear a bunch of talking right?). They came out and rocked the house for what seemed almost three hours. Just the sheer appearance of King Buzzo drove the crowd mad! The mosh pit was circling being driven by the sheer sludge sounds of the band.I was totally blown away by the bands energy and tone. The Melvins totally melted our faces off, and blew us away. Consider me a fan for life!

First time in Paradiso Tolhuistuin and must say was pleasently surprised. Great sound and good views made the Melvins experience once again one to remember. Buzz, Steven and Dale did their thing which they have done so many times but with an energy like you rarely see anymore.

It must also be awesome to be in a band that has created a huge and diverse repertoire, to draw from to make any live event something unique.

The crowd sucked it up, eventhough they were perhaps secretly hoping for more of the old classics.

I can recommend anyone to go and check out the Melvins live, you will be blasted away with a great mix of heavyness.

I’ve been going to see Melvins since 1991 and after last night’s show, I can say that they have never rocked harder. The set contained classics from Ozma, Bullhead, Houdini and Stoner Witch. There was also a sprinkling of new and less known stuff as well. Redd Kross was amazing and totally high energy. The collaboration between the two bands and the crossover of members was so cool. All the members of both could interchange easily... except Buzz of course, he has one home. The only bummer was that Shitkid didn’t play. I was really looking forward to seeing her.

What’s to say? Redd Kross and Melvins that’s all anyone needs to know. They both played power hour sets. Steven and Dale definitely earned their money pulling double duty for both sets. I’d seen something I never have before. The headlining band play a cover of the opening band while opening band member played with headliner!!! WTF!!! Then to see both bans merge for two songs at the end was pretty rad. The Grog Shop once again proved to be the place to see live music in Cleveland. I love the venue and the staff is awesome.

Obijuan’s profile image

Sandwiched between Eye Flies and Night Goat was an hour-long sandwich of throwaway material. Usually, Melvins are okay, but last night was pretty disappointing. ...which is fine, shit happens, but these guys used to be a force to be reckoned with. Now it seems they've acquiesced to more or less phoning it in with mishmash of hard rock songs, minus the time changes and the dynamics that once made them so great. It is was like witnessing a poorly executed Melvins cover band.

Amazing show! So tightly, musically woven are these guys! Every note and beat was in perfect harmony! My neck hurts from it bopping all night! It was a show I want to hear over and over again! I hope they record and release the set we heard on Valentine’s Night! The acoustics at the Mystic made it even more magical, as I have seen the Melvin’s at different venues, but this night was awesome! Honey to my ears!

MR. BUNGLE announce 2023 U.S. tour with MELVINS

Mr. Bungle 2023 press 1600x900, Buzz Osborne

Mr. Bungle have announced their first set of tour dates in three years. The band led by the inimitable Mike Patton — who returned to the stage late last year after canceling a slew of 2021 tour dates for "mental health reasons" — will be playing a handful of U.S. shows later this spring with the sludge-grunge pioneers, the Melvins , and post-metal band Spotlights (featuring Revolver' s own Chris Enriquez).

The bill is actually a resurrection of the Geek Show tour, a package put together by Ipecac Recordings in the early 2000s that exclusively featured bands from that label. This iteration of the tour will feature seven dates, all taking place on the West Coast of the U.S.

"The Geek Show tours of the past were some of the best live show experiences I've ever had," Patton said in a press release. "Hanging out with friends that are also some of my favorite musicians is a great way to spend a couple weeks. This iteration is a mindblower. You will want to be the first one there and the last to leave this party! The mighty Melvins and Spotlights will prove to be a challenge for Mr. Bungle to follow. I only wish we could take this package around the globe."

Tickets go on sale Friday January 27th at 10 a.m. local time. See the full list of dates below.

Boris and Melvins Announce 2023 US Co-Headlining Tour

The "Twins of Evil Tour" kicks off in late August

Boris and Melvins Announce 2023 US Co-Headlining Tour

Boris and Melvins are teaming up for the “Twins of Evil” 2023 US co-headlining tour.

Dates kick off August 24th in Los Angeles and run through October 14th in San Diego. Each band will perform one of its classic albums in its entirety each night: Heavy Rocks (2002) for Boris and Bullhead for Melvins. Support will be provided by Mr. Phylzzz.

A Live Nation pre-sale for select dates begins Thursday (June 8th) at 10 a.m. local time using the code DISCO via Ticketmaster , while general sales start on Friday (June 9th). Fans can also look for deals or pick up tickets to sold-out gigs via StubHub , where your purchase is 100% guaranteed through StubHub’s Fan Protect program.

“Forty years as the Melvins!!! What better way to celebrate that unlikely milestone than by setting off on the ‘Twins of Evil Tour’ with our friends, Boris,” commented Melvins frontman Buzz Osborne in a press release. “This will be a stone groove!”

Added Boris’ Takeshi: “Could anyone have predicted such an astonishing event, that Boris and the Melvins would tour the entire USA together? Since the mid-1980s, the Melvins have had an enormous influence on artists of all genres not only limited to heavy music, and have brought forth a surge of faithful followers over the years. Needless to say, Boris is just one of these many bands influenced by the mighty Melvins, and we took our name from a song title off of the 1991 album, Bullhead .”

Among the stops is September 16th at the previously announced Desertfest NYC , where both bands will serve as headliners.

Savvino-storozhevsky monastery and museum.

Savvino-Storozhevsky Monastery and Museum

Zvenigorod's most famous sight is the Savvino-Storozhevsky Monastery, which was founded in 1398 by the monk Savva from the Troitse-Sergieva Lavra, at the invitation and with the support of Prince Yury Dmitrievich of Zvenigorod. Savva was later canonised as St Sabbas (Savva) of Storozhev. The monastery late flourished under the reign of Tsar Alexis, who chose the monastery as his family church and often went on pilgrimage there and made lots of donations to it. Most of the monastery’s buildings date from this time. The monastery is heavily fortified with thick walls and six towers, the most impressive of which is the Krasny Tower which also serves as the eastern entrance. The monastery was closed in 1918 and only reopened in 1995. In 1998 Patriarch Alexius II took part in a service to return the relics of St Sabbas to the monastery. Today the monastery has the status of a stauropegic monastery, which is second in status to a lavra. In addition to being a working monastery, it also holds the Zvenigorod Historical, Architectural and Art Museum.

Belfry and Neighbouring Churches

the melvins tour dates

Located near the main entrance is the monastery's belfry which is perhaps the calling card of the monastery due to its uniqueness. It was built in the 1650s and the St Sergius of Radonezh’s Church was opened on the middle tier in the mid-17th century, although it was originally dedicated to the Trinity. The belfry's 35-tonne Great Bladgovestny Bell fell in 1941 and was only restored and returned in 2003. Attached to the belfry is a large refectory and the Transfiguration Church, both of which were built on the orders of Tsar Alexis in the 1650s.

the melvins tour dates

To the left of the belfry is another, smaller, refectory which is attached to the Trinity Gate-Church, which was also constructed in the 1650s on the orders of Tsar Alexis who made it his own family church. The church is elaborately decorated with colourful trims and underneath the archway is a beautiful 19th century fresco.

Nativity of Virgin Mary Cathedral

the melvins tour dates

The Nativity of Virgin Mary Cathedral is the oldest building in the monastery and among the oldest buildings in the Moscow Region. It was built between 1404 and 1405 during the lifetime of St Sabbas and using the funds of Prince Yury of Zvenigorod. The white-stone cathedral is a standard four-pillar design with a single golden dome. After the death of St Sabbas he was interred in the cathedral and a new altar dedicated to him was added.

the melvins tour dates

Under the reign of Tsar Alexis the cathedral was decorated with frescoes by Stepan Ryazanets, some of which remain today. Tsar Alexis also presented the cathedral with a five-tier iconostasis, the top row of icons have been preserved.

Tsaritsa's Chambers

the melvins tour dates

The Nativity of Virgin Mary Cathedral is located between the Tsaritsa's Chambers of the left and the Palace of Tsar Alexis on the right. The Tsaritsa's Chambers were built in the mid-17th century for the wife of Tsar Alexey - Tsaritsa Maria Ilinichna Miloskavskaya. The design of the building is influenced by the ancient Russian architectural style. Is prettier than the Tsar's chambers opposite, being red in colour with elaborately decorated window frames and entrance.

the melvins tour dates

At present the Tsaritsa's Chambers houses the Zvenigorod Historical, Architectural and Art Museum. Among its displays is an accurate recreation of the interior of a noble lady's chambers including furniture, decorations and a decorated tiled oven, and an exhibition on the history of Zvenigorod and the monastery.

Palace of Tsar Alexis

the melvins tour dates

The Palace of Tsar Alexis was built in the 1650s and is now one of the best surviving examples of non-religious architecture of that era. It was built especially for Tsar Alexis who often visited the monastery on religious pilgrimages. Its most striking feature is its pretty row of nine chimney spouts which resemble towers.
