Dangar Island from Hawkesbury

• By Train – To reach Dangar Island by train, journey from Sydney Train Station to Hawkesbury River train station. Enjoy the convenience of regular train services connecting these two points. With the train journey taking just over an hour, this integrated transportation system offers a smooth and scenic route to Hawkesbury River Station.
• Given Dangar Island’s island setting, the primary access mode is through a ferry. Operated by Brooklyn Ferry Service , the 15-minute ferry ride connects Brooklyn at Hawkesbury to Dangar Island. The ferry schedules are synchronized with the arrival of trains at Hawkesbury from Sydney, ensuring a seamless transfer.

Best day trips from sydney by train

On today’s blog, I am going to share some beautiful places you can visit on day trips from Sydney by train. Between you and me, I don’t drive so it is imperative that I find places that I can visit with public transportation or reasonable Uber costs. (I know how to drive but just choose not to for personal reason) And by traveling on a train, you are saving money and can focus on enjoying the trip completely.

I have solo traveled to 48 countries and one may think I probably have seen all Sydney has to offer. But every time I am back home, I am amazed to find so many cool places that I had never been to before! So without further ado let’s start.

• Fun day trips from sydney by train

1. Blue Mountains National Park

2. royal national park, 3. mount kuring gai chase national park, 4. palm beach, 5. central coast, 6. port stephens, 7. hawkesbury river, 8. southern highlands, 9. hunter valley, let me know in the comments –.

In Sydney, new south wales there are currently more than 200 registered National Parks, some very small and others the size of a country. One of the easiest to get to is the Blue Mountains, National Park. I have been there several times but I always find something new, whether it be a new hike or a new cute little cafe. There is just so much nature and fresh air, I just can’t get enough of it.

Getting There: From Central Station, you can board an air-conditioned double-decker Blue Mountains train at Platform 21. Although it is an old train it works and is clean. The trains run at least every hour, and take around two hours to reach the top of the Blue Mountains. The fast journey to the Mountains will most likely stop at Strathfield, Parramatta, Penrith, Emu Plains, and then all stations up the Blue Mountains. Most trains go through to Mount Victoria. Some even go as far as Lithgow. Recommend to get off the train in Leura, stroll along the little village there, or Katoomba as it is a great starting point for some hiking adventures.

One of the other day trips from Sydney by train is the Royal National Park. It offers a magnificent coastal view, cliffs, secluded beaches, and eucalyptus-rich bushland. It is the second oldest National Park in the world and is open from 7 am to 8.30 pm. It is one of the biggest national parks in NSW so there is a lot to see here. Some of the must-sees are – figure 8 pool, sea cliff bridge, wattomolla beach, symbio wildlife park, Garie beach, wedding cake rock, the coastal track itself, and Port Hacking.

Getting There: From Central or Circular Quay station, take the Illawarra Line. This transports you to Loftus, Engadine, Heathcote, Waterfall, and Otford. Get off Otford and start through the walking tracks and into the park. On Sundays and public holidays, a tram is available from Loftus.

Alternatively, I also recommend the following way to get there on a day trip. You can take then train up to Cronulla, then once you are out of the station take right all the way down to the ferry wharf. Buy the ticket or use opal, get on board, and get off in Bundeena Wharf. Head up the residential streets, there are no signs here but so you will have to guess a bit (adventure part!) but you will know you are on the right track if you find yourself in front of the parking spot. From there you the trial is pretty obvious which leads to the Wedding cake and the Garie beach.

Alright, here is another place you can make a day trip from sydney by train. It doesn’t require you to drive or pay the parking fees. That’s because you can start this hike as soon as you get out of Mount Kuring Gai train station. This is a loop hike so you can start at either end of the trial (berowra or mt kuring gai) Just make sure you have enough time to return back in the daylight because I made a mistake spending a lot of time in Cowan creek and while returning it was completely dark. (never again) Anyway, it is a beautiful hike full of lush green, water view, and can be a day out there with a picnic and exploring what we have right here in Sydney. Stop at serene Waratah Bay, Cowan Creek, and Appletree Bay.

Getting There: From Central Station, you can take the train to Berowra station and start the hike from there. All you have to do is walk out of the station, turn right passing the bicycle racks, another right, cross the bridge and you should see the signboard of the national park in front of you.

Within 1.5 hours from Wynard station, you can arrive in this beautiful paradise. There is not only pretty Palm beach but a unique view from the Barrenjoey lighthouse with beach on both sides of the peninsula is stunning. This is definitely one of the best hiking spots, mountain climbing, swimming, or beach time. Good for most ages as the walk up isn’t too difficult – there’s an easier and fully paved road up or there’s also a shortcut with stairs to the top. The 100-year-old cable suspension footbridge which is surrounded by stunning nooks to swim, fish, or picnic.

Getting there: From Wynyard Station, Carrington St, Stand C (Platform C) take bus 190X towards Palm Beach which will take about 1.5 hours to arrive at the Observation Point, Barrenjoey Rd. From here Palm beach is 15 minutes walk and the lighthouse is roughly 20-30 minutes walk from the beach depending on how fast or slow you walk. If you are driving, it costs $8 an hour parking along the Beach roadside.

The Central Coast is just about an hour and a half train time from Sydney CBD which is in the north of Sydney and perfect for that day trips from sydney by train. The city of Gosford is the main town here and towns like Terrigal and Avoca Beach feature expansive beaches and surfing. 

Recommended places to see are Australian Reptile Park if you enjoy animal encounters and shows, Ku-ring-gai Chase National Park and Brisbane Water National Park for hiking, nature, and exploring Aboriginal sites & Hawkesbury River, Bouddi National Park for that forest bath & picnic days. You can even have a segway adventure at Mount Penang Parklands, horse riding tour at Glenworth Valley, treetop crazy rider experience, meet kangaroos at kangaroo Valley and Jetpack & fly board Combo Adventure!

If you go to the central coast, you will hear about the Entrance. It is an area that offers a range of resorts surrounded by ocean and Tuggerah Lake which is actually a saltwater wetland. Lately, there has been a buzz about Yarramalong town of the central coast because you can have a tiny house experience at Unyoked Co here. 

Now if you are into markets, check out the Gosford city farmers market, the Entrance market, and for beach and market both these are great options- Avoca Beachside Markets, French Country Market, and Terrigal, Umina, and Shelly Beach Markets. 

Getting There: From Sydney central station to Central Coast, it takes 1h 51m (Platform 11)

How to start a blog in Australia

Port Stephens is a large natural harbor just north of Newcastle. It is a stunning area of 26 beaches, the largest sand dunes in the southern hemisphere, and is just over two hours north of Sydney, worth visiting any time of the year. It’s fair to say it is everything a dream destination can consist of – pristine waterways, idyllic promenades, spectacular sunsets over crystal clear waters, tropical forests, and loads of cafes and restaurants.

Anna Bay, Nelson Bay, and Shoal Bay are all great places to visit while you are in Port Stephens. Although I like Anna Bay the most because of the name and sand dunes! So once you’ve scaled the dunes, you can head to Birubi Beach for a swim, paddle in rock pools, eat by the water, and sample fresh produce at tiny farm gates.

Port Stephens is also called the dolphin watching capital of Australia and you can also go on Whale Watching here! It offers many things to keep you busy for weeks on end! Some of the must-sees are – Worimi Conservation Lands, Fort Tomaree walks, Point Stephens Lighthouse and Fingal Island, Fly point Aquatic Reserve, as well as exploring Worimi National Park, snorkeling at Fishermans Bay or at the famous Fly Point Park, taking a quad bike tour, learning to surf at One Mile, dolphin-watching tour, picnic at pretty Bagnalls Beach, climbing to Gan Gan Hill Lookout, scuba diving with sharks off Broughton Island and even looking for koalas in Tilligerry Habitat Reserve is fun!

For food and wine, I recommend the terrace, Shoal Bay Country Club, the point restaurant, and little beach boathouse restaurant. 

Beach recommendations: Fingal Bay beach, Zenith Beach, and Bay both, Stockton Beach, Anna Bay, One Mile Beach, Soldiers Point to Salamander Bay, Soldiers Point, Tilligerry Peninsula, and Lemon Tree Passage. Port Stephens North Shore – Hawks Nest & Tea Gardens is worth checking out too!

Getting There: Nelson Bay is the main town in Port Stephens and there are public buses available if you want to go Shoal Bay.  You can choose from various transport options on arrival, including car rental, limousine, and door-to-door shuttle bus, to make the short trip northeast to Port Stephens. There is no direct connection from Central Station to Port Stephens. However, you can take the train to Newcastle (Platform 11), then switch to bus no 130 towards Fingal Bay from Hamilton Station. Get off on Sandy Point Rd at Judith St and you are in Port Stephens.

One of the underrated day trips from sydney by train is Hawkesbury River. Some of the must-sees here are Devines Hill Loop, Cattai Homestead, and Historic Farm Buildings, Navua Reserve, Streeton Lookout, Muogamarra Nature Reserve, and Old Great North Road – World Heritage Walk. And you can swim in it too but recommend to do so only in the bays where there are moorings. Swim in the middle of the river is not advised because the tides could be too strong! 

Getting There: From Sydney central station to Hawkesbury river train station, trains depart every 30 minutes and operate every day. The journey takes approximately 1h 1m. At Central station trains leave from platform 12 at 8.45 am (always check before you get on!)  If you are early risers, the previous train departs Central Station at 7.45 am, arriving at 8.45 giving you enough time to explore Hawkesbury.

Southern Highlands is spread over an area covering more than 15 quaint towns and villages that offer specialties of their own. It is located about 127 km south-west of Sydney and is picturesque south coast/region etched in natural beauty. A list of main towns in southern highlands are:

1 Bowral- the largest town in the region. 2 Braidwood 3 Camden – in the foothills of South West Sydney. 4 Gunning 5 Mittagong 6 Moss Vale 7 Picton 8 Queanbeyan An effective suburb of the nation’s capital Canberra, but part of New South Wales 9 Yass

These several towns in the southern highlands have a choice of accommodation, restaurants, and a large variety of services.

For a day trip, Bowral would be a good choice as it is one train and back no need to change. Some of the must-see and visit in Bowral are, Bradman Museum, Corbett Gardens, Mount Gibraltar Reserve, Southern Highlands Wine Trail, Gumnut Patisserie, and Dirty Janes, the scenic Fitzroy waterfalls, the historic abandoned ghost town of Joadja, the Tulip flower festival, Retford Park National Trust, and a large variety of cafes, bookstores, and antique & craft shops.

I recommend stopping by Harry’s on green lane cafe in Bowral, the Famous Robertson Pie Shop, they also sell some of the best pastries, sausage rolls, fruit pies, cakes. Both are great places to stop at for a snack. If you are a fan of Cricket, you may want to visit the International Cricket Hall of Fame in Bowral too.

Getting There: From Central station, take the Southern Highlands Line SN59 towards Moss Vale on Platform 2 and disembark on Bowral station. Takes about 2 hours and trains run every day.

Hunter Valley is one of Australia’s most renowned winemaking regions in the north. You can sample the best known local wine variety, Semillon, at many winery cellar doors across the valley. Make sure to try the Shiraz, Chardonnay, and Verdelho, also grown in this region. With award-winning restaurants and spa spots located throughout, a well deserved weekend of eating, drinking, and relaxing can easily be had in the hunter.

Hunter valley day trips from sydney by train cannot be complete without visiting a beautiful garden, a 25-acre paradise comprising 10 stunning feature gardens and thousands of flowers, trees, and shrubs. The 10-meter high waterfall above the Sunken garden is great for superb views, and the characters that come to life in the storybook garden are truly a sight to behold. If you are wanting to visit just for a day, recommend booking the full day Hunter Valley tour with gourmet food for the best bang for your buck!

Some other must-do activities include hunter valley gardens shopping, golden door health retreat/day spa, and the hot air balloon overlooking the vineyards all the way eyes can see! Lake Macquarie, Newcastle, Maitland, and Cessnock are also worth stopping by because they all fall under the same Hunter region.

Getting There: 1. From central station get on a Cityrail service to Maitland or Morisset with connecting buses from each of these stations to Cessnock. From Cessnock, it is 20 min (approx) taxi ride to your desired location in Wine Country. The whole journey takes around 3 hours so recommend starting early for a day trip. 2. Catch a regional Trainlink train that runs between Sydney and Singleton (platform 5), which is a 20min taxi ride from Cessnock. 

10. Split to Manly

The Split bridge to Manly hike takes 3 hours but if you make a picnic along the way or have a post-hike meal at Manly then it could easily be 5-6 hours. Starting at the Mosman’s Spit Bridge, this classic Sydney coastal walk shows you some of the most picturesque parts of Middle and North Harbours. If you been wanting to be in nature, water views, and lush green but don’t want to travel hours on a train then this could be it. 

Some of the must-see on this hike were Fisher Bay, Sandy Bay, Clontarf Beach, Castle Rock, and the spectacular view from Dobroyd Head. Also, don’t miss the Aboriginal rock engravings at Grotto Point, the amazing views from Arabanoo lookout, gorgeous flora, and fauna, stunning harbor, bush, and ocean views. Also, recommend to pass by or take a dip at Reef Beach or Forty Baskets on your way to Manly and along the way marvel at multi-million dollar harbourside mansions and yachts!

You could also start this hike at Manly and end at the Split bridge but personally I prefer the other way because ending in Manly means you could enjoy a sundowner, food, or just relax at the beach and easily take the ferry back to the city.

Getting There: The split to Many is a beautiful 10KM /3 hours hike that can be considered one of the refreshing day trips from Sydney by public transport ie bus and ferry although you may need to catch the train first to get to Wynard station from where you need to switch to the bus. From Wynyard Station, Carrington St, Stand A (Platform A) get on the bus no 180 towards Collaroy Plat, get off in Spit West Reserve, Spit Rd (put this on your google maps).

Note: This stop is BEFORE the bridge. Once you get off the bus, cross the bridge by foot then at the end of the bridge, you should see the stairs going down the bridge. Follow that path, you are at the starting point of beautiful Split to Manly walk.

I’ve got a trip on the zigzag railway on the 17th and then I’ve got three days left over to find something to do. What are the things I’m doing is a I dinner cruise on the harbour on one of the clipper ship that’s all booked paid for but I need your advice. I’m quite happy to jump on the train at Central Station and like to travel on trains for least two hours 2 1/2 hours and I like to go to maybe the end of the line or somewhere special that I could enjoy for lunch And to have a look around the area I’m not a man who likes to do a lot of hiking just walk around in general so if you got suggestions for a good scenic rail journey from Sydney Central Station I be much appreciated and I appreciate your help yours Jeff Melbourne, Australia One of the perfect things would be a steam trip but I can’t find anything that suits my dates while I’m in Sydney. Sydneysiders are a lucky bunch. Jump in the car (or the train) and within just a few hours you can find yourself in some of the most beautiful spots in the state.

But with so many options to choose from, it begs the question: where should you visit first? You're certainly spoilt for choice, so we've cherry-picked a selection of the best day trips from the city – featuring quaint villages, seaside hangouts and mountain escapes.

Around a two-hour drive or a scenic train ride away from the CBD, you'll find yourself rambling through eucalypts and gums, gazing out over gorgeous ocean cliffs, or watching the world go by in a sleepy village café. All these places have two things in common: they're close enough to get you there and back within a day, and they're well worth your time.

Ku-ring-gai chase national park.

You’ll discover deep-rooted history and picturesque landscapes at Ku-ring-gai Chase National Park, 50 minutes north of Sydney by car. Feast your eyes on views of Pittwater to the Central Coast from the sandstone viewing area at West Head Lookout. Take a short walk through the bush to find important Indigenous sites on the Aboriginal Heritage walk , which includes viewings of historic rock engravings and handprints made by the Guringai people. The park includes many waterways including Hawkesbury River, Pittwater and Cowan Water, plus numerous creeks and coves to explore. Want to see more? Hire a paddle boat from the Bobbin Inn.

How far? 43km

Get there by car. It’s about 50 minutes’ drive from Sydney CBD.

• Royal National Park

The Royal National Park has endless possibilities for sightseers and explorers eager to connect with nature. Trek the expansive coastal cliffs and walk through eucalyptus bushlands, swim under the waterfalls in Wattamolla, or paddle down Hacking River by hiring a canoe from the Audley Boatshed. You can even catch a glimpse of whales migrating north for the winter from May to November. Cyclists can brave the 10km Loftus Loop Trail and unroll a picnic blanket for lunch at Ironbark Flat or Wattle Forest afterwards.

How far? 36km

Get there by car. It’s about one hour away from Sydney CBD. Or take the train from Central to Otford, which takes just over an hour and costs $7.65 with an Opal card.

Blue Mountains

Take a train to the Blue Mountains and make a day of visiting gobsmacking lookouts like Echo Point and wandering along tracks that boast rich Indigenous history. Trek the scenic loop of the Grand Canyon track near Blackheath to see world heritage listed waterfalls, sandstone walls and native plants. Or soak in the vibrant shades of flora in the Blue Mountains Botanic Garden in Mount Tomah . Take a peek into the Glow Worm Tunnel in Lithgow where the bioluminescent glow of fungus gnats covers the walls and ceilings. Or relax in at one of the finest day spas in the Blue Mountains  for massages, facials, soak therapies and body wraps.

How far? 79km

Get there by car, it’s about one hour away from Sydney CBD. Or catch the Blue Mountains line train from Central to Katoomba, then the bus from Katoomba to Echo Point for the lookout. It costs around $10 with an Opal Card.

Dedicate a few solid hours to simply wandering around this adorable seaside village, stopping in at cute cafés and the famous Ice Creamery, Kiama (aaaaaaah). A trip here wouldn't be complete without a visit to the Kiama Blowhole , where waves spurt out through a  crevasse  in the cliff, forming a fabulous salty fountain. Play golf at the rural golf course or walk the Kiama Coast Walk for views of lush green cliffs overlooking rocky shores, rivers and private beaches. There are also plenty of surrounding coastal towns connected by cycleways for fitness fanatics to conquer. You can also book magestic activities like dolphin watching cruises, outdoor rock climbing and kayaking tours.

• Things to do

Home to panoramic coastal views, sunny weather and an infamous surf, Palm Beach is the ideal Australian package. Located one hour away from Sydney’s CBD on the Northern Beaches, this hot spot is perfect for a relaxing day trip away from the commotion of the city. Cruise the crystal waters on a boat charter, tee off at the Palm Beach Golf Course, or grab a bite at the Boathouse for lunch after embarking on a Pittwater kayaking tour . The Barrenjoey Lighthouse delivers a bird’s-eye-view of the sandy dunes, 91 metres above sea level. And if you're a die-hard Home and Away fan, you can pretend you're a Summer Bay local, as much of the show's filming was done at Plam Beach and the surf lifesaving club.

How far? 44km

Get there by car. It’s about one hour away from Sydney CBD. Or catch the L90 bus from Wynyard Station for around $5 with an Opal card.

Kangaroo Valley

If you’re looking to escape to the countryside, Kangaroo Valley, located two hours south of Sydney, has got you covered. Go wine tasting at the Yarrawa Estate Winery, where you can sample locally made jams. Entertain the kids by kayaking down Kangaroo River or go horse riding through rainforest and grazing lands . You can admire the Victorian architecture of the Hampden Bridge or the bushland views from Mannings lookout, too. For the DIYers there are also plenty of  hands-on classes in gourmet cooking, gardening, soap-making and the art of high tea.

Get there by car. It’s about two hours and ten minutes away from Sydney CBD.

Port Stephens

Despite being a two hour drive from Sydney CBD, Port Stephens offers adventure and scenic views that make it worth the time at the wheel. Embark on a camel ride at Oakfield Ranch or dive in for a snorkel with dolphins. Sandboard the largest dunes of Stockton Beach during the day, or do it by sunset for a more romantic picnic setting. For adventurers, the outdoor rock climbing at Port Stephens’ sea cliffs will have you reaching unimaginable heights overlooking the ocean slapping the rocky shore, or you can opt to stretch your legs on the newly completed Tomaree Coastal Walk that is a whole 27 kilometres of stunning views.

How far? 179km

Get there by car, it’s about two hours and 30 minutes away from Sydney CBD.

The Entrance

Less than two hours north of Sydney, you’ll find one of the most charming corners of the Central Coast. Famed for its community of hungry pelicans – there’s a public feeding of the local ‘scoop’ (that’s the collective noun) every day at 3.30pm, which can attract up to 50 hungry birds –  this coastal town sits astride the natural ocean channel that separates the sapphire waters of Tuggerah Lake from the Pacific. A day out here is perfect for those who enjoy the outdoors but want to keep one foot planted in civilisation – the town has plenty of caf é s and restaurants you can retreat to when you need a feed or a coffee. There are many super spots for fishing and prawning and multiple places in town where you can hire the necessary equipment if you’re not already kitted out. If you’re a keen cyclist, the 12-km shared trail along the lake will have you spoilt for beautiful views and just north of the Entrance, there are a number of easily manageable bushwalking tracks through Wyrrabalong National Park. During the sunnier months, head to Tuggerah Beach, which boasts more than 8km of golden sands lapped by ocean waves, and if you’re not put off by chillier waters, surf conditions are excellent here all year round.

How far? 110km

Get there by car. It’s about 1.5 hours from Sydney CBD.

This quaint spot is the South Coast getaway for people who live on the South Coast, and being locally adored is always a good sign. It’s basically a two-for-one holiday: the salty sea breeze floating up from Seven Mile Beach to the sprawling green hills makes you feel like you’re in a small country town and a forgotten seaside village in the same breath. There’s incredible baked goods to be found at  Milkwood Bakery and you’ll find unusual bottles of plonk at the almost-too-cool Justin Lill Wines & the Berry Bottleshop . If fancier eats are in order, Queen St Eatery is an elegant little restaurant on Berry’s main drag executing the classics with style. A generous plate of prawns grilled in their shells carry a whisper of aniseed from the Pernod flambe, and the herbal spiciness of a proper Café de Paris butter on a minute steak is balanced by a crunchy nest of wafer-thin fries. If you’re ready to burn some energy, the three-hour return hike to the stunning plateau of the Drawing Room Rocks is always a winner. Looking to stay the night? Plan a long simmer in a balcony bath with sightlines out to the ocean at the stunning Mount Hay Retreat . 

How far? 138km

Get there by car on a two-hour drive that’ll take you past some gorgeous ocean cliffs – stop off at the Kiama Blowhole on the way, or take your pick of other South Coast adventures . 

Step into another time by visiting the historic village of Berrima, established in the 1830s. Widely recognised as the preserved example of a Georgian village on the Australian mainland, Berrima is surrounded by wineries, charming centuries-old architecture, and fancy boutiques. Buy handmade country produce at Mrs Oldbucks Pantry and warm winter knits from the Australian Alpaca Centre. Stop by Eschalot for lunch for a hatted fine-dining experience at a heritage-listed building. Walk by the Berrima River for a platypus sighting, or book yourself a ghost tour at the local courthouse.

How far? 125km

Get there by car. It’s just under two hours away from Sydney CBD.

Lake Macquarie

While you may only know Lake Macquarie for its expansive body of water, this unassuming region sandwiched between Sydney and Newcastle has a lot to offer city folk looking to slow down and get back to nature. If you want to go there and back again in a day, Bilbo Baggins-style, then we must recommend a trail  ride with  AAA Horse Riding & More . You'll be trotting and cantering under palm tree canopies, along lush fern pathways and through skinny gums stretching skyward at the foothills of  the Watagan Mountains. Afterwards, become a salty skipper while you cruise around the region's namesake lake on a private runabout boat with  Jetbuzz Watersports .

How far? 127km 

Get there by car in just under two hours, driving through the bushlands of Ku-ring-gai Chase National Park.

Stanwell Park

Situated on the northern tip of Wollongong, Stanwell Park is where Australian aeronautical pioneer Lawrence Hargrave first flew in his box kite in 1894. Since then, Bald Hill lookout has been the spot for hang gliding and paragliding, as well as a good place to enjoy an alfresco lunch. You can also hike the 6.5km walking track of Wodi Wodi or hand feed kangaroos at Symbio Wildlife Park . If all else fails, slap on some sunscreen and head to the beach for a splash.

How far? 64km

Get there by car. It’s about one hour, 15 minutes from Sydney CBD. Or take the train from Central to Otford, which takes around one hour and costs about $6 with an Opal card. The walk from Otford Station to Stanwell Tops takes 22 minutes.

Mermaid Pools

• Southern Highlands

Trek through the bush, swim in rivers and chase waterfalls around Mermaid Pools near Tahmoor Gorge. You’ll encounter steep steps and rocky platforms as you venture to the water, but the views are well worth it. While the Mermaid Pools themselves are not the safest to swim in, the many swimming holes you’ll encounter on the trek are ideal for a splash. The See Through Pools are the perfect pit-stop for a swim, allowing you to view hidden rock formations underwater.

If you’re looking for a change of scenery and the best day trips by train from Sydney you’re in for a treat. Fortunately, Sydney’s public transport system is excellent and can take you to some of the most beautiful destinations in New South Wales.

In this blog, we’ve put together a list of eight fantastic day trips that you can take from Sydney without the need for a car. From scenic coastal walks to charming historic towns and stunning natural attractions, these destinations are perfect for those who want to get away from the city for a day and experience the beauty of the surrounding region. 

The Blue Mountains

The Blue Mountains are a popular tourist destination in Sydney and can be easily accessed by public transportation. The scenery is breathtaking and offers a refreshing escape. The national park is vast, providing ample opportunities for exploration.

Where is it?

The Blue Mountains are located slightly more than 100 kilometers to the west of Sydney, and one can reach the scenic village of Katoomba within two hours via a train ride from the city.

How to get there

This day trip is incredibly simple, as it only requires taking a single train from Central Station to Katoomba, which is located in the center of the Blue Mountains. Trains depart from Central Station hourly, with some being more direct than others, so it’s important to check the timetable and plan accordingly.

When visiting the Blue Mountains, there are two main modes of transportation available: you can either take the public buses that run from Katoomba to Echo Point, where the famous landmark of the 3 Sisters can be found, or utilize the Explorer hop-on, hop-off bus for a more convenient way of getting around.

This option is highly recommended as it offers flexibility and ease of access to the top tourist destinations. With 29 stops around Katoomba and Leura, you can explore a lot in a day. However, take note that the bus operates at 9:30 a.m. to 4:15 p.m., so it’s important to plan your itinerary accordingly.

Top things to do at the Blue Mountains

Although small in size, it is possible to fit plenty of activities into a single day in Katoomba. The day could start with a visit to the famous Three Sisters lookout, followed by a descent down the Giants Stairs to the stunning Honeymoon Lookout.

Don’t forget to stop by the Blue Mountains Chocolate Company for some locally-made sweets before heading to Leura. In Leura, one can admire the beautiful Leura Cascades and continue on to the impressive Gordon Falls lookout.

If you are looking for breathtaking views, check out Wentworth Falls from the Princes Rock and Jamison Lookouts. These spots offer magnificent sights not just of the waterfall but also of the vast national park. For a more immersive forest experience, Scenic World is the perfect place to visit.

This attraction features the world’s steepest railway, easy forest boardwalks, and cable cars that take you on a journey through the mountains and treetops. It’s an exceptional way to spend your day.

Watsons Bay

If you’re looking for a spot in Sydney that offers both a refreshing sea breeze and easy access, this area is perfect. It boasts a fantastic selection of food, picturesque walks, stunning beaches, and breathtaking skylines, making it the ultimate destination for a day out.

If you’re looking for a nearby location to explore without traveling too far, Watson’s Bay is a great option. It’s situated on the South Head peninsula, directly north of Parsley Bay Reserve, and is only 12 kilometers away from the city.

There are two ways to get to Watson’s Bay: by ferry or by a combination of train and bus. To enjoy a more picturesque journey, opt for the ferry ride from Circular Quay, which takes approximately 40 minutes. Alternatively, take the train to Edgecliff Station and then transfer to the bus that will take you to Watson’s Bay. This option also offers stunning views of the water.

Top things to do at Watsons Bay

Doyle’s is a highly recommended lunch spot for food enthusiasts, especially those who love seafood. They offer a range of dishes, from upscale dining to casual fish and chips, at their cafe located in Robertson Park.

A scenic walk around South Head in Watsons Bay is a great activity to enjoy, with a 5 km easy walking track that provides stunning views of the city skyline, parkland, and the Hornby Lighthouse, which has distinctive red and white stripes. Additionally, Lady Bay Beach allows nudity for those who are interested in skinny dipping.

Even if you aren’t a fan of the television show Home & Away, it’s recommended that you take a day trip to the stunning location on the Northern Beaches of Sydney. Unlike Bondi, where the focus is on surfing, this spot is perfect for unwinding and relaxing.

Palm Beach is located on the northern beaches and is situated at the end of a peninsula. Despite being approximately 40 kilometers away from the city, the area offers a sense of seclusion and detachment from urban life.

Starting from Wynyard Station, you can board the L90 bus, which will take you directly to Florida Road, allowing you to reach Palm Beach conveniently.

The bus ride will last approximately two hours, and you will have the opportunity to admire stunning coastal views along the way. Additionally, the bus route passes through Mona Vale, another beautiful beach located in Sydney’s northern region.

Top things to do at Palm Beach

The most recommended activity in Palm Beach is to hike up to the Barrenjoey Lighthouse, which has been protecting the coastline for more than a century.

The lighthouse is made of sandstone and sits at an elevation of 91 meters above sea level, providing breathtaking views of Palm Beach and the surrounding coastline. Although the hike up to the top is steep, the panoramic views make it a worthwhile experience.

For those who are fond of “Home & Away,” this is an excellent opportunity to explore the filming locations. There are Home & Away tours available to visit the filming spots. Alternatively, if you prefer a more relaxed experience, you can enjoy a swim at the south end of the beach, where the water is shallow and serene.

Manly is an incredible destination for a day trip, and it has always been one of my personal favorites. It’s conveniently located and has a charming coastal atmosphere that can help you unwind while still providing plenty of activities to keep you engaged.

Whether you’re looking to take a break from the hustle and bustle of the city or simply want to explore a new area, Manly is an ideal spot to do so. From relaxing on the beach to exploring the local scene, there’s no shortage of things to do here.

Manly is a northern suburb of Sydney and is located across the bay. It has two distinct sides, with one being more sheltered and the other having great surfing opportunities on its main beach.

If you are situated on the North Shore of Sydney, then it is convenient to catch buses to Manly. However, if you are not located in that area, the most suitable option would be taking a ferry.

Ferries operate every 20–30 minutes from Wharf 3 at Circular Quay, providing a delightful journey past the Opera House and along the picturesque coastline.

Top things to do in Manly

As soon as you arrive at the wharf in Manly, you’ll discover a plethora of activities to enjoy. If you’re in the mood for a refreshing drink with a stunning sea view, head over to the Bavarian during their happy hour in the evenings. On either side of the wharf, you’ll discover the calm waters of Cabbage Tree Bay and Manly Cove, perfect for swimming.

If you venture across the road, you’ll find yourself on Manly Corso, a bustling street filled with shops, restaurants, and fantastic rooftop bars. Manly Beach is a great place to unwind and is also a popular spot for surfers, while Shelly Beach, located right next door, is ideal for snorkeling and stand-up paddleboarding. If you venture further up, take a stroll around North Head, where you can enjoy breathtaking views of the coastline.

Newcastle, which is located nearby, is one of my favorite areas along the coastline, and I recommend spending a day there. The town has a rich history, a burgeoning food scene, and numerous chances to engage in outdoor activities.

To enjoy a full-day trip, it is recommended to start early and begin the journey towards the north of Sydney, covering a distance of approximately 160 km, which takes about 2.5 hours along the coast.

Traveling from Sydney to Newcastle is a breeze thanks to the efficient transport system. Simply board a train at Central Station, which will take you directly to Broadmeadow Station. Once you arrive, a quick walk for a few minutes will lead you to the heart of Newcastle. Despite the distance, the journey is hassle-free and convenient.

Top things to do in Newcastle

Newcastle is a destination that boasts a rich maritime history, making it a perfect place to visit Fort Scratchley and the Anzac Walks, which offer stunning views of the city. For those who prefer to stay closer to the ground, Bar Beach is an excellent spot for surfing or strolling, as are Nobby’s Beach Reserve and the Lighthouse.

If you’re looking for a more relaxed swim, the Newcastle and Merewether Baths are perfect. Foodies will love exploring The Junction and Darby Street, both of which offer an excellent selection of dining options.

Central Coast

The Central Coast is a hidden gem on the East Coast that is often overlooked by travelers. It is a great spot to escape the city crowds and enjoy nature and wildlife. I highly recommend visiting this underrated location.

The Central Coast is a convenient location for a day trip, being situated halfway between Sydney and Newcastle. It offers a refreshing change of scenery and is only around 100 kilometers north of Sydney, which can be reached within a two-hour drive.

To reach Newcastle, you can conveniently board a train from Central Station heading towards this destination. While there are several stops on the central coast, it’s best to disembark at Tuggerah Station and take a bus to The Entrance for a delightful experience. This location is perfect for exploration and offers many exciting activities to indulge in.

Top things to do on the Central Coast

The entrance is an excellent starting point for your day on the Central Coast. You can begin by taking a leisurely walk along the coast or exploring the lake by following the signs.

The route is divided into sections, allowing you to choose whether you want to do the entire circuit or just a portion of it. Toowoon Bay and Shelly Beach are both great options for a delightful beach walk, or you can take a refreshing swim at The Entrance’s ocean baths.

The pelican feeding at 3.30 p.m. is a must-see event that focuses on conservation and monitoring these impressive birds. To satisfy your hunger after a long walk, visit Big Tuna Fish Co., where you can select your fish, witness its preparation, and enjoy it while overlooking the ocean.

Bondi To Coogee Coastal Walk

One of the most popular activities to do in Sydney is to take a scenic coastal drive that offers breathtaking views of Australia’s azure waters, stunning beaches, and unparalleled swimming spots.

The highlight of this drive is undoubtedly Bondi Beach, which is renowned as one of the most iconic beaches in the country. The best part? This coastal route is easily accessible from the city, making it a must-see for anyone visiting Sydney.

If you travel 7 kilometers east of the city, you will arrive at Bondi Beach. From there, you can walk 5 kilometers south along the stunning coastline to reach Coogee. You can also do this route in reverse.

To get to Coogee from Central Station, take a train to Bondi Junction and then look for the bus station located there. Take bus 333 or 380 to Bondi Beach and start walking towards Coogee by following the road past the Icebergs Club.

Top things to do on the Bondi to Coogee coastal walk

This walk is all about the stunning views of the ocean and the opportunity to swim in the ocean pools at Bronte and Coogee, or even try snorkeling at Gordon’s Bay.

You’ll cross over some amazing rock formations and have plenty of photo opportunities. Take your time and enjoy the scenery on this leisurely walk that takes a couple of hours. Don’t forget to check out the Bondi Market if you’re there over the weekend.

The Spit Bridge To Manly Coastal Walk

If you’re looking for a way to get away from the hustle and bustle of the city, then taking a 10-kilometer walk from Spit Bridge to Manly is a great option.

Not only will you get to see some stunning beaches, but you’ll also get to walk through a beautiful park and even see some Aboriginal artwork. While the trail is considered moderate, there are some steep steps and sandy sections, but the views and experience are definitely worth it!

The Spit Bridge is a key connection between Sydney and the Northern Suburbs, located approximately 10 kilometers from the city. The starting point of the walk is on the northern side of the bridge.

Starting from Wynward, take a bus that will only take 25 minutes to reach Spit West Reserve. Once you arrive, walk for 500 meters to reach the bridge.

From the bridge, you will see signs that will direct you to the “Manly Scenic Walkway.” The walk starts at Ellery’s Punt Reserve, so make sure to follow the signs to reach your destination.

Top things to do on the Spit Bridge to Manly coastal walk

The entirety of this stroll is a visual delight. At the beginning of the walk, there are stunning boats docked in the bay, and if you’re fortunate, you may witness the bridge opening to accommodate a passing boat.

The stroll offers breathtaking beaches, including Fisher Bay, Castle Rock Beach, and North Harbour Reserve. Most of these beaches can be easily accessed, so remember to bring your swimsuit.

As you embark on this walking journey, a picturesque section of it leads you through the serene Sydney Harbour National Park, where you’ll find yourself surrounded by lush greenery.

Scotland Island in Sydney is one of those hidden gems! Located in Pittwater, and just a bit further south from Palm Beach is an island which will make you feel like you’re a million miles away. This Sydney getaway is all about relaxing and enjoying the beauty of Pittwater. We’ve been here twice and would easily go back in a heartbeat! Hire a kayak to nearby beaches, spend about 40 minutes walking around the island, simply sit back on a jetty and enjoy a beautiful sunset! Scotland Island Restaurants There’s no restaurants on the island, but eat at Church Point Wharf or Pasadena at Church Point (both are excellent). Pasadena is the perfect place for afternoon sundowners.

Where to stay in Scotland Island We stayed at Scotland Island Lodge which is run by a lovely British couple (book the room with the outdoor spa!).

Public Transport friendly? Yes! Take a bus to Church Point, then jump on the 10 minute ferry ride over to Scotland Island. If parking, you’ll have to pay for parking at the car park at the wharf, or park a good 5 – 10 minutes away for free parking.

2. Avalon Beach

Distance from Sydney: 45 min drive // Northern Beaches Perfect for: Beach lovers!

One of our favourite parts of the Northern Beaches in Sydney is without a doubt Avalon Beach. With beautiful shops, cafes and restaurants to choose from, walk down Old Barrenjoey Road to discover it all. Drive five minutes up the road over to Pittwater side and discover beautiful beaches including family friendly Clareville Beach, and our personal favourite Paradise Beach nearby for quieter swimming options.

We were really impressed with the food options in Avalon. Koto is where you’ll find one of the best acai bowls in Sydney! Head to Sunset Diner for burgers and Alma for Mexican.

The Hawkesbury River is such an underrated getaway from Sydney. Expect to discover loads of relaxing activities, perfect for everyone! We absolutely loved the Riverboat Postman Cruise. You’ll spend the morning helping the postman deliver the post to the residents around the Hawkesbury River. It’s a great activity for kids, but it’s also pretty cheap which includes either morning tea or lunch.

Also, head over to Dangar Island and spend a few hours on the walking trails or hire a kayak to explore further. 7. Pearl Beach

We couldn’t believe how gorgeous Pearl Beach in Sydney really is! This little gem feels like you’re a million miles away from Sydney, even if you can see Palm Beach across the water. Enjoy relaxing on Pearl Beach, go on a hike down to Warrah Lookout before reaching Patonga Beach. Stop for lunch at The Boathouse at Patonga and enjoy the beautiful water views while enjoying the perfect Sydney weekend getaway.

8. Wisemans Ferry

Wisemans Ferry is a gorgeous part of Sydney and New South Wales. Located just 1h20m away from the city, enjoy hiking, beautiful campgrounds and historical sites. You can’t come here and not do the UNESCO Old Great North Road Walk in Dharug National Park. This incredible bush walk extends to 260km up the coast, so tackle a shorter part of it to Hangmans Rock. This 3h30m walk will take you along the remnants of convict life.

If you’re not interested in hiking, enjoy kayaking down the Hawkesbury River instead! And if you have kids, take them to Tobruk Farm for a bit of fun getting up close to loads of animals.

This is a gorgeous Sydney getaway you need to put on your list. Scuba dive at the EX-HMAS Adelaide, check out the views at Captain Cook Lookout, have fun at Aqua Lake, visit the gorgeous Avoca Beach Picture House and swim at the many beaches in the area. Although we’ve been to Central Coast loads before, we recommend checking out the hip Long Jetty. Although it’s known as ‘the Newtown of the Central Coast’, expect to find cool street art, vintage shops, yoga studios, healing & tarot shops, lots of independent kids clothing stores, homeware shops and awesome Long Jetty restaurants and cafes.

Check out the jetty at Long Jetty to top up your insta feed, take photos of the famous Long Jetty mural outside Green Tangerine Cafe & outside Reapers Barbers. Visit, Long Jetty Vintage shop, book a seat at The Savoy Cinema, shop at Plain Janes & Shadow Bang for cool clothing and homewares, and don’t forget to visit A Dash Of Christmas which is an amazing grotto style Christmas shop open on weekends! 11. Lake Macquarie

There are loads of amazing beaches, national parks and so much more to visit around Lake Macquarie. Situated just south of Newcastle, you’ll find the largest saltwater lake in the Southern Hemisphere! It’s twice the size of Sydney Harbour and is absolutely beautiful, especially at sunset.

Check out the caves at Caves Beach & Ghosties Beach, swim under the pier at Catherine Hill Bay, drive your 4×4 onto Redhead Beach, swim in the rock pools at Bongon Beach and surf at Frazer Beach. We must admit, Lake Macquarie is home to some of the best beaches in Sydney! All of the above beaches are absolutely beautiful, making it a perfect weekend getaway. 12. Newcastle

After living in Newcastle on an off for the last few years (Steve’s family are based here), I must admit it’s an underrated city near to Sydney. One of my favourite things to do in Newcastle is to take my yoga mat down to Bar Beach at sunrise and go for a swim after I’ve perfected my sun salutes! I also love shopping at Sourced Vintage tshirt shop on Darby Street, running from Merewether to Nobby’s Lighthouse and checking out the incredible beaches in Newcastle as well. 13. Hunter Valley

The Hunter Valley always makes it to the top of the best weekend getaways in Sydney list because it’s home to the some of the best wineries in Australia! As a popular wedding destination in Sydney as well, Hunter Valley packs a punch for an excellent weekend away from Sydney.

Go to Hunter Valley Gardens, and at Christmas they have a massive light display. Go on a sunrise hot air balloon ride, watch a famous band at A Day On The Green (we saw The Rolling Stones there a few years back!), and check out the following wineries: Tempus Two winery, Miguigans winery and Brokenwood Winery.

Wollongong in NSW is an underrated weekend from Sydney. Start with the Grand Pacific Drive and enjoy driving along the coast and over the famous Sea Cliff Bridge. Stop off at Sri Venkateswara Temple and Kelly’s Falls, before checking out Simbio Wildlife Park. Continue on to the blow hole in Kiama and head inland to the brilliant Jamberoo water park and Illawara Fly Tree Walk. 15. Southern Highlands

Distance from Sydney: 1h30m // Southern Highlands Perfect for: Country getaway for everyone, especially foodies

If you’re missing UK, head down to Southern Highlands and you’ll feel like you’re in the countryside. As Bowral is the main hub in the Southern Highlands, you’ll find more cafes and restaurants here than any other town in the area, as well as plenty of activities to keep you busy!

Head to Green Lane which sort of reminds me of The Grounds of Alexandria, but complete with gorgeous restaurant and cafes, plant and flower shops and Dirty Janes antique shop. Check out the famous Bradman museum of cricket, the amazing Tudor style antique shop Lancelot Hill, and explore plenty of hikes including, Box Vale Walking Track, 40 Foot Falls and 60 Foot Falls.

Don’t forget to visit Kangaroo Valley, Robertson and Berrima as well for beautiful pubs, amazing waterfalls, the stunning Kangaroo River and much more. 16. Sunnatarum

If you’re looking for a meditation retreat near Sydney, you absolutely must go to Sunnatarum Forest Monastery in Bundanoon. We’ve been three times now because it’s that good. This donation based retreat is held at a Thai Buddhist Monastery. On a good day, you’ll be able to see out to Jervis Bay! Expect a schedule consisting of sitting and walking meditation, Thai Chi and Buddhist teachings. A weekend here and you’ll feel like you’ve been away for ages. You won’t regret it!

Distance from Sydney: 2hr drive // Southern Highlands Perfect For: Couples, foodies

It’s no wonder Berry is one of the most beautiful getaways from Sydney. Although it’s kinda obvious Berry is a tourist town, it’s a beautiful one you could easily spend the weekend at.

The most popular draw card to Berry is the famous Berry Doughnut Van. We lined up feeling quite sceptical about the whole thing, but I must admit, those cinnamon doughnuts are really worth talking about. Hike to the beautiful Drawing Room Rocks, do wine tasting at Silo Estate Winery (one of the best wineries in NSW), and shop at the gorgeous shops in Berry. Berry Accommodation

18. Japanese Bath House

The Japanese Bath House in Blue Mountains is a fantastic weekend getaways from Sydney for spa lovers. We feel it deserves its own title in this article because you could spend days relaxing in the hot pools overlooking Lake Lyell.

Situated a 40 minute drive from Katoomba, this traditional onsen is a fantastic escape from Sydney. With loads of hot baths to choose from, there’s a gorgeous tea room to chill out in and relax after a dip in the pools and a massage. Either make it a day trip from Sydney or spend the weekend staying in the Japanese style accommodation at the spa.

Weekend Getaways From Sydney Within 3 Hours

19. port stephens.

Distance: 2h30m // North of Sydney Perfect for: Everyone, particularly families

Port Stephens is a really popular Sydney getaway for a lot of people because it offers up so much for a weekend away. With plenty of resorts to choose from, gorgeous beaches and loads of family friendly activities, the islands honestly transports me to Krabi in Thailand.

Make sure you go to Anna Bay for sand duning on the largest sand dunes in the Southern Hemisphere. You can also go swimming with dolphins with one of the only companies in NSW. 20. Seal Rocks

I remember Steve’s cousin telling us about Seal Rocks and it was on our list for ages. When we went to visit, we couldn’t believe how amazing this place truely is. It’s one of those special places in NSW which you’ll want to come back time and time again, perfect for beach and camping getaways and for surfing too.

Seal Rocks is all about the beach. Bring your surfboard and enjoy some of the best surf in Sydney. Walk up to the top of the Lighthouse and if you’ve got a 4×4, drive along the beach.

21. Blueys Beach

We spent a couple of months in Blueys Beach and we just couldn’t get over how gorgeous this little gem truely is. Instead of staying in Forster, stay in Blueys Beach instead. Whilst Blueys Beach is the main little hub of the area, there are about five beaches back to back including Blueys Beach which are all incredible. Just make sure you also check out the gorgeous Boomerang Beach as well, making this area a fantastic long weekend getaway.

22. Mount Wilson

Distance: 2h20m drive // Blue Mountains Perfect for: Anyone who loves English Countryside or gardens

Mount Wilson in Blue Mountains is a magical place. This hidden gem is so beautiful, it honestly reminds me of the English countryside. Visit during Spring or Autumn and enjoy the trees changing colour. There are quite a few gardens in Mount Wilson to visit. We’ve been to Breenhold Gardens in Autumn and Spring and they are absolutely beautiful! But to stay in Mount Wilson would be the perfect Sydney weekend getaway. I can only imagine how romantic is would truly be to wake up and go on an early morning walk with the Autumn or Spring leaves all around.

The White Sands Walk is a gorgeous walk which ticks off some of the incredible beaches in Jervis Bay including the Whitest Sand Beach In The World – Hyams Beach. As one of the best weekend escapes, don’t miss out on the dolphin and whale watching tours .

Wombeyan Caves is a little hidden gem near Sydney. You’ll find less people here than at the neighbouring Jenolan Caves, plus you can visit the caves on self guided tours. When we visited, we were the only people in the caves – it was amazing!

Wombeyan Caves is all about the caves. You can go on guided and self guided tours around the different caves here. Plus, if you’re visiting in Summer, embrace the Mares Forest Creek Canyon and hike and swim your way through the ice cold water. It’s one of the most amazing things I’ve ever done near to Sydney!

Newnes is one of the best camping getaways from Sydney. The free campsite is incredible and the Wolgan Valley is breathtaking. There is a river next to the campsite so you could spend the day sitting in it to cool down after one of the many hikes to choose from. We hiked to the glow worm tunnels which takes you along the old railway tracks. It’s beautiful!

Barrington Tops tends to make the lists as one of the best national parks in Australia, and you’ll see why when you visit. We were blown away by this Gondwana National Park because it honestly feels like you’ve been transported to the Jurassic era.

Barrington Tops is all about camping and hiking. We did the Antarctic Beech Tree Forest Walk which took around 2hours. There is a waterfall you can swim in on this walk, but check first as at the time of visiting it was closed.

Check out the famous Trial Bay Gaol, an historical prison you can visit and wonder around. The beach at Trial Bay is fantastic and flat – perfect for families. Go up to the top of Smokey Cape Lighthouse and feel like you’re on the edge of the world.

37. South Coast Region

Distance from Sydney: 5hr drive to Bermagui // South Coast Perfect for: Families, camping, hiking, beaches, foodies

Known for its sublime beaches, you could easily spend a couple of weeks exploring the South Coast. The main towns people stay in South Coast tend to be around Batemans Bay, Narooma and Bermagui. Head to the beautiful tourist town of Tilba Tilba, check out Australia Rock in Narooma and Horses Head rock formation in Bermagui.

It’s also home to some of the best beaches in New South Wales to discover such as Mystery Bay, Depot Beach and South Durras. Make sure you check out the crystal clear rock pools in Mimosa Rocks as well.

Public Transport Friendly? It will take at good 8 hours with two train rides and a bus trip to get to Bermagui.

Sydney has more than enough beautiful beaches, iconic landmarks, and hip restaurants and bars to keep you occupied for weeks. However, if you're looking to escape the city for a day or two, you can't go wrong heading up or down the coast for tiny, chilled-out beach towns and flourishing small cities.

If nature is more your style, drive west to the mountains or explore the wine regions of New South Wales. Even Australia's capital city, Canberra, is only a three-hour drive away. Despite Australia's size, Sydney is in the perfect location for travelers looking to make the most of nearby cities, coastal towns, the countryside, and everything in between.

Palm Beach: Seaside Luxury

Sydney's Northern Beaches are famously gorgeous and secluded, and Palm Beach is the best of the bunch. An easy drive from the city center, this stretch of golden sand and clear blue water features exclusive vacation homes and appears as the backdrop for the iconic Australian soap opera "Home and Away." Hike up to Barrenjoey Lighthouse for the best views.

Getting There: Palm Beach is around an hour's drive by car from the center of Sydney. Buses depart from Circular Quay and Central Station to Palm Beach via all of Sydney’s Northern Beaches. You can also take a 20-minute scenic flight with  Sydney By Seaplane from the eastern suburb of Rose Bay.

Travel Tip: Beloved waterside café The Boathouse is perfect for a casual breakfast. If you're a serious foodie, make a lunch or dinner reservation at contemporary Australian restaurant Jonah's , which overlooks nearby Whale Beach.

Wollongong: A Relaxed Beachside City

Over the past decade, Wollongong has transformed from a dreary industrial port into a thriving cultural hub. With great beaches, good food, and a quirky small bar scene, this little city is an affordable, laid-back escape south of Sydney .

Symbio Wildlife Park is a popular local attraction for those interested in getting up close and personal with native animals, while Stanwell Park offers ideal hang-gliding conditions.

Getting There: If possible, rent a car and take the coastal road to soak up the stunning views offered by Sea Cliff Bridge; this over-ocean engineering marvel runs parallel to the cliffs north of Wollongong. The city can also be reached by train. Whether driving or using public transport, the trip will take around 1.5 hours.

Travel Tip: One of Wollongong's more off-beat attractions is Nan Tien Temple , the largest Buddhist temple in the southern hemisphere. It is open Tuesday through Sunday and features an excellent vegetarian cafe.

The Hunter Valley: Aussie Wine Country

North of Sydney , the Hunter Valley offers travelers over 150 wineries and a slew of award-winning restaurants. The most plentiful grapes in the Hunter are Chardonnay, Semillon, Verdelho, Shiraz, Cabernet Sauvignon, and Merlot.

With farmlands populated by grazing cattle and kangaroos, the Hunter is not your typical wine region: Its attractions are best explored by bike, horseback, or hot air balloon. Excellent local eateries include Bistro Molines , Muse , and Cafe Enzo , while the best vinos can be tasted at Usher Tinkler , Brokenwood , and Tempus Two .

Getting There: The Hunter Valley is just over a two-hour drive from Sydney. Public transport options are limited.

Travel Tip:  Many cellar doors recommend booking in advance or are only open on weekends, so be sure to confirm ahead of time.

The Blue Mountains: Natural Wonders

Sydney is surrounded by national parks, including the impressive Blue Mountains World Heritage Area , which rises out of the eucalyptus haze to the west. Most visitors use the small towns of Leura or Katoomba—dotted with galleries, pubs and cafés—as a base to explore the surrounding bushland, waterfalls, and valleys. Don't miss the Three Sisters rock formation.

Getting There: Katoomba is around a 1.5-hour drive from Sydney. It can also be reached by train (just over two hours) or tour bus.

Travel Tip: If you're interested in some more intense hiking, there are plenty of adventure tour companies that can show you the area.

Ku-ring-gai Chase National Park: From the Bush to the Beach

Known for its Aboriginal cultural heritage, hidden beaches, and many hiking trails, Ku-ring-gai Chase National Park is located on Sydney's northern outskirts. Measuring over 3,700 acres, the park's highlights include Resolute Beach, West Head Lookout, Bobbin Head picnic area, and the Red Hands Cave rock art site—all set among lush rainforest, rocky cliffs, and mangroves.

Getting There: Ku-ring-gai Chase is an hour's drive north of the city center. Keen hikers can take the train to Mount Ku-ring-gai or Cowan Station and walk the couple of miles into the park via well-marked trails.

Travel Tip: Check the National Parks website for details about specific trails and park-wide safety alerts.

The Hawkesbury RIver: Historic Towns and Water Activities

Just outside the city, the charming Hawkesbury River—and the area surrounding it—feels a whole world away. A popular weekend escape, the historic town of Windsor is home to one of Australia’s oldest pubs, the  Macquarie Arms Hotel , as well as the Hawkesbury Paddlewheeler cruise ship. In Windsor and other towns along the river, visitors can enjoy bushwalking, horseback riding, biking, fishing, boating, kayaking, and waterskiing.

Getting There: Windsor is a 50-minute drive northwest of Sydney center and an hour by train.

Travel Tip: The treetop adventure course at Grose River Park will keep the whole family entertained, with obstacles for kids ages four and up.

Port Stephens: Dolphins, Sand Dunes and Surf

Port Stephens and the neighboring villages of Nelson Bay and Shoal Bay offer the quintessential Aussie beach experience. It's all about the sand and surf, with duneboarding, whale watching, surfing, and kayaking available . Port Stephens is also the best spot to see dolphins in Australia, as over 150 resident bottlenose dolphins live here. Once you've had your fill of the beach, head to Tomaree National Park and hike up the mountain for 360-degree views of the area.

Getting There: Port Stephens is a 2.5-hour drive north of Sydney , or 4.5 hours via train or bus.

Travel Tip: Because of the shape of the bay, Port Stephens is one of the few places on Australia's east coast where you can see the sun set over the water, making for some pretty perfect photos.

Royal National Park: Hiking and swimming

In between Sydney and Wollongong, Royal National Park is a sprawling playground for nature lovers. The beach at Wattamolla is one of the park's most popular attractions, with a thin strip of sand that backs onto a calm lagoon—waterfall included. For a relaxing coastal walk, try the  Jibbon Beach loop track  from Bundeena.

Getting There: Royal National Park is under an hour's drive south of Sydney. It is also possible to take the train, as the three-mile Karloo Walking Track starts from Heathcote Station and ends at Uloola Falls. Alternatively, you can catch the ferry from the Sydney suburb of Cronulla to Bundeena for a more scenic trip.

Travel Tip: Wedding Cake Rock and Figure-Eight Pools are popular spots in Royal National Park. However, park authorities discourage all but the most experienced hikers from visiting these fragile natural areas due to safety concerns.

Newcastle: History, Food, and Culture

If you're looking for something a little more cosmopolitan, take a trip to Newcastle, the second largest city in New South Wales (after Sydney.) There are plenty of beaches, including surfers' paradise Mereweather and family-friendly Bar Beach. For trendy food and boutiques, head to the Darby Street precinct or the open-air Hunter Street Mall. Because Newcastle was a center of industry in Australia's early years, history buffs will find relics like the old Convict Lumber Yard and the impressive Newcastle Museum worth a visit.

Getting There: The journey from Sydney north to Newcastle takes 2.5 hours on the train, and a little less by car.

Travel Tip: While Newcastle's beaches are world-class, the city's ocean baths are a tranquil and unusual alternative. The art deco  Newcastle Ocean Baths is always refreshingly cool, while the Mereweather Baths holds the distinction of being the largest ocean baths complex in the Southern Hemisphere.

Canberra: Australia's capital city

A quick visit to Canberra will allow you to hit all the major landmarks, with a little time left over for some local food and wine. As the nation's capital, Canberra was designed in the early 20 th century to house institutions like Australia's Parliament House , National Gallery , War Memorial , and National Museum .

Head to the inner north suburb of Braddon for the best coffee and all-day breakfast, then hike up Mount Ainslie or walk around Lake Burley Griffin to check out Canberra's unique geometric layout. The city is also surrounded by one of Australia's best cool-climate wine regions .

Getting There: Canberra is a three-hour drive from Sydney. It can be reached by train or an hourly bus service.

The Southern Highlands: Quaint Small Towns

Located between Sydney and Canberra, the Southern Highlands region—made up of adorable towns like Bowral, Mittagong, Moss Vale, and Berrima—is perfect for those who crave a slower pace. The highlands are known for their fall colors and blooming gardens in the spring. The region's cool temperatures also offer a lovely respite from Sydney's summer heat.

Visitors flock to the 260-foot-high Fitzroy Falls at Morton National Park, a twenty minute drive from Bowral. The Bradman Museum and International Cricket Hall of Fame , dedicated to Bowral-born cricketing legend Donald Bradman, is a must for sports fans.

Getting There: The Southern Highlands region is only an hour's drive from Sydney, and can also be reached by bus or train.

Kangaroo Valley: A Haven for Wildlife Lovers

As the name implies, Kangaroo Valley is all about wildlife. You can spot kangaroos and wombats at the Tallowa Dam picnic area and Bendeela campground , go trail riding , or visit a working farm . Kayaking on the Kangaroo River and hiking in Budderoo National Park are also great ways to explore this region's natural beauty.

Getting There: Kangaroo Valley is a two-hour drive southwest of Sydney. Public transport options are limited.

Travel Tip: Keep an eye out for Hampden Bridge. The only surviving suspension bridge from the colonial period in New South Wales, this bridge still carries traffic across the Kangaroo River.

Jenolan Caves: An Underground Wonderland

Nestled in the foothills of the Blue Mountains, the Jenolan Caves system is made up of 11 enormous limestone caverns, dotted along ancient rivers and filled with marine fossils and crystal formations. The cave complex is approximately 340 million years old, making it the world's oldest known and dated open cave system. It holds spiritual significance to the local Gundungurra and Wiradjuri indigenous peoples.

Getting There: The Jenolan Caves are located just under a three-hour drive from Sydney. There are no public transport options.

Travel Tip: There are a variety of cave tours available, with tickets starting at AU$42 for adults. Night tours run every day of the week except Sundays, and several undeveloped caves are available for adventure caving.

Just about a forty-minute drive north of Sydney, we highly recommend getting the ferry to Scotland Island from Church Point In Pittwater. The route is lovely with picturesque views all around. Scotland Island is pretty small but a great getaway if you’re just looking to unwind and get close to nature. There’s also a walking track around the entire island which doesn’t take longer than an hour.

2. Long Jetty

When it comes to day trips from Sydney, the town of Long Jetty is an essential destination. Located on the Central Coast it’s trendy little town, filled with cafes, souvenir shops and some amazing street art. Long Jetty is also relatively close to Sydney by public transport. The best option would be to take the Newcastle train to Gosford and then transfer to a B21 to Long Jetty. The entire journey shouldn’t take longer than 2.5-3 hours. If you’re driving, you’ll be there in less than 1.5 hours.

Warm, welcoming and gorgeous, Berry is the perfect country getaway not far from Sydney. Be sure to visit the Seven Mile Beach National Park for some sun, sea and sand. For all the foodies, Salmon & Co. is the place to visit for their delightful waffles and fantastic coffee. Figbird Café and Deli is another option for some delicious lunch and drinks along with some cosy vibes. Take the train from Town Hall Station to Wolli Creek and then change to the train to Kiama transferring to Berry Station if you’re taking public transport. By road, the journey is just 2 hours.

4. Glow worm tunnel in Lithgow

For a magical escape, we highly recommend the Lithgow Glow Worm Tunnel. The tunnel is located in the expansive area of the Blue Mountains and there are only a small number of ways to get there. The best way to make the most of the adventure, however, is by joining a guided night tour with a certified instructor . The experience inside the caves is absolutely magical with hundreds of glow worms lighting up the tunnel.

5. Newcastle

If you’re in the process of planning some exciting day trips out of Sydney, you’ll want to add Newcastle to your list. It is an incredibly popular getaway and rightfully so. It has a great food and café scene, lots of fun outdoor activities, stunning beaches and a rich historical landscape. Jump on the train at Central and it will take you to Broadmeadow Station. From there, you just have to walk a few minutes to reach Newcastle. By road, this popular destination takes just about 2 hours to reach.

6. Port Stephens

Port Stephens is an absolute paradise for sports lovers and adventure enthusiasts and a must-visit when it comes to day trips from Sydney. When you’re in town, make sure to stop by Nelson Bay for some spectacular sunset views. Australia’s largest sand dunes are also located in Port Stephens and you can explore them on camelback or on quad bikes. It’s a thrilling adventure and a surreal feeling to see the beach on one side and the desert on another. The drive from the CBD just takes about 2.5 hours.

7. Wollongong and the Grand Pacific Drive

Day trips from Sydney don’t get better than this. The Grand Pacific Drive is probably one of the most Instagrammed destinations in NSW.

Just about 80 kms from Sydney, Wollongong is the perfect getaway and the route takes you along the Grand Pacific Drive which is an added bonus to visit. Pristine beaches, stunning coasts and great food, it’s also close enough to do the trip out of town and back. By road you would reach Wollongong in about 1.5 hours. You could also get a direct train from Town Hall to Wollongong Station and get there in under two hours.

8. Figure 8 Pools 

Located just south of Sydney at the Royal National Park, the Figure 8 Pools are quite an experience.

8 fantastic day trips from Sydney you can take using public transport

Whether it be a weekend or one of the many public holidays Australia has, nothing beats getting out and about for the day. Sydney itself has so much to offer, from the sights of the Opera House, the history and epic rooftop bars at The Rocks and the quirky neighbourhoods nestled in its inner west.

But what about when you want a change of scenery? Sydney is actually a great gateway to so many nearby gems. Within an hour or 2, you can be in the mountains or watching pelicans feed. What’s even better is that you don’t need a car to get to these places. Sydney’s excellent transport network means you can get a lot further than you think without needing your own wheels.

So all you’ll need for your epic day out is your Opal Card (this will get you on all of Sydney’s public transport), your swimmers or your walking boots. Along with the usual sunscreen and sun hat, because sun safety first you guys… this is Australia after all. So here are some of the best day trips from Sydney you can take using the awesome public transport.

But first, take a look at these for some more inspiration:

1. The Blue Mountains

The Blue Mountains are one of the top places to visit whilst in Sydney and they are super easy to explore via public transport as well. The views are incredible and it’s the place to go to get a real breath of fresh air. This National Park stretches for over 2.5 thousand square miles so you’re not going to be short on things to do.

Where is it?

The Blue Mountains are just over 100km west of Sydney and a 2 hour train ride from the city to the beautiful village of Katoomba.

How to get there

What’s super easy about this day trip is that you just need to catch one single train from Central Station to Katoomba and you’ll be in the heart of the Blue Mountains. Trains leave Central station every hour if not more and some are slightly more direct than others. Be sure to check the timetable and plan your journey here .

When you reach the Blue Mountains, there are 2 main ways to get around. There are public buses that run from Katoomba and Echo Point where the famous 3 Sisters are, but to get around easily, I recommend the Explorer hop-on-hop-off bus . It’s super easy to use and gives you the flexibility to visit the top sites. It has 29 stops around Katoomba and Leura and you’ll be able to see heaps in a day. The bus runs between 9.30am-4.15pm so be sure to plan your day around this.

Top things to do at the Blue Mountains

Despite its size, it’s easy to pack a lot into just one day. As you’re starting at Katoomba, walk down to the famous Three Sisters lookout. Here you can learn about the Aboriginal legend that gives the location its name before climbing down the Giants Stairs to the breathtaking Honeymoon Lookout. Before leaving Katoomba, be sure to drop into the Blue Mountains Chocolate Company for a local, handmade sweet treat. The next village along is Leura where you’ll find the pretty Leura Cascades in the forest and you can even walk along to reach the more striking Gordon Falls lookout further on.

For the incredible views, visit Wentworth Falls from the Princes Rock lookout and Jamison Lookout where you’ll not only see the waterfall but miles across the national park. If you want to experience the forest more, you’ll love Scenic World boasting the steepest railway in the world, easy boardwalks through the forest and cable cars to take you along the treetops and through the mountains. 2. palm beach.

Whether you’re a Home & Away fan or not, this beautiful spot in Sydney’s Northern beaches is well worth a day trip to. Unlike Bondi which is all about the surf, here it’s all about relaxing.

Palm Beach is one of the Northern beaches and sits right on the tip of a peninsula. It’s about 40 km north of the city but you’ll feel a world away from it all.

From Wynyard Station, you can catch the L90 bus straight to Florida Road which puts you right next to Palm Beach. The bus ride takes a little under 2 hours and you’ll follow the coastline, providing you with beautiful views. You’ll also go through Mona Vale which is another fantastic beach in Sydney’s north.

The top thing to do at Palm Beach is taking the walk up the Barrenjoey Lighthouse. This sandstone lighthouse has been guarding the rugged coastline for well over 100 years and sits 91 meters above sea level. With its high location comes some stunning views over Palm Beach and along with a big chunk of the coastline. The walk to the top is a little on the steep side but it’s well worth it!

If you are a fan of Home & Away then this is your chance to do some site seeing of the filming locations as well. You can even book onto a Home & Away tour to see the filming spots here . If relaxing is more you’re thing, then you might like to take a swim at the south end of the beach where the water is shallow and super calm.

3. Watsons Bay

This area of Sydney is perfect if you don’t want to travel too far but still want a good breath of fresh sea air. It has the ultimate mix of food, walks, beaches and skylines.

Located just 12km east from the city, Watsons Bay is a great spot to visit if you don’t want to travel too far. It covers the area at the top of South Head peninsular, just north of Parsley Bay Reserve.

You can either reach Watsons Bay by ferry or by a train/bus combination. For a more scenic route, hop on the ferry from Circular Quay and sail along for 40 minutes, or you can take a train to Edgecliff Station and then catch the bus up to Watsons Bay, also giving you some great views over the water.

If you’re a huge foodie then lunch at Doyles is a must. Doyles has become a Sydney institution and serves up incredible seafood dishes, from fine dining to fish &chips at their cafe in Robertson Park. Watsons Bay has a lovely scenic walk around South Head on an easy walking track, about 5km long. As you go along you’ll be treated to views of the city skyline, parkland and the striking red and white stripped Hornby Lighthouse. Also, if you’ve ever fancied a skinny dip, nudity is permitted at Lady Bay Beach!

4. Newcastle

Nearby Newcastle is one of my favourite spots along the coast and it’s well worth spending a day there. It’s steeped in history, has a great up and coming food scene and plenty of opportunities to get outdoors.

For this day out you’ll want to set off a little early to make the journey. The route is about 160km north of Sydney, 2.5 hours up the coast.

Despite the fair distance, Sydney’s transport system makes it super easy to reach Newcastle. You can just jump on the train at Central Station and it will take you straight to Broadmeadow Station. From here it’s just a short few minutes walk to the heart of Newcastle

Top things to do in Newcastle

Newcastle is a spot full of maritime history so a visit to Fort Scratchley and the Anzac walks are a must. They also lead the way to some great views too. Back on ground level, Bar Beach is a great location for surfing or taking a walk, along with Nobby’s Beach Reserve and Lighthouse. If you want to take a swim out of the harsh waves, you’ll love the Newcastle and Merewether Baths, and for a fantastic selection of food, check out The Junction and Darby Street. 5. Central Coast

For me, this is one of the most underrated spots on the East Coast – a true hidden gem which is definitely overlooked by travellers. So if you want to spend a day away from the city crowds surrounded by wildlife and nature, I cannot recommend the Central Coast enough.

The Central Coast is halfway between Sydney and Newcastle making it less of a distance for a day trip, but still a great change of pace. It’s just over 100km north of Sydney, less than 2 hours away.

As with Newcastle, you simply jump on the train going towards Newcastle from Central Station. There are a number of train stops along the central coast but I recommend hopping off at Tuggerah Station and then catching a bus to The Entrance as this is a great area to explore.

The Entrance is a great place to start your day on the Central Coast. From here you can take a stroll along the coast to lake scenic walk by simply following the signs, and explore both the coast and the lake. The route is divided into sections so you have the options to do the full circuit or a enjoy a part of it. For a great walk along the beach, walk down to Toowoon Bay or a little further to Shelly Beach or take a dip at the ocean baths at The Entrance.

One thing that you can’t miss here is the pelican feeding that takes place at 3.30pm every day. The feed has a focus on conservation and is a way of monitoring these magnificent birds. For a delicious bite to eat after a lot of walking, head over to Big Tuna Fish Co. where you can pick your fish, watch it get cooked and tuck in overlooking the sea. 6. The Spit Bridge to Manly coastal walk

This 10km walk is one of the best ways to escape the busy city. Along the way, you’ll pass breathtaking beaches, walk through a stunning park, visit lighthouses and view Aboriginal artwork. This Spit Bridge to Manly walk is considered a moderate trail with some steep steps and walks across sand but it’s well worth the extra effort!

The Spit Bridge connects up Sydney with the Northern Suburbs. It’s just shy of 10km from the city and the bridge on the north side is where the walk starts.

From Wynward, catch a bus for the short 25 minute journey to Spit west Reserve and then walk 500 meters to the Bridge. From the bridge, simply follow the signs for the ‘Manly Scenic Walkway’ where the walk starts at Ellery’s Punt Reserve. For more details, take a look at a complete route breakdown here .

Top things to do on the Spit Bridge to Manly coastal walk

The whole of this walk is a real feast for the eyes. Right at the start you’ll see some incredible boats anchored up in the bay and if you’re lucky, you might get to see the bridge open up to let a boat pass through. Throughout the whole walk you’ll see incredible beaches such as Fisher Bay, Castle Rock Beach and North Harbour Reserve. You can easily access a lot of these beaches don’t go without your swimmers!

One section of this walk takes you through Sydney Harbour National Park where you will be surrounded by trees and follow a track up, over and through to some of the best viewpoints of the coastline and the city skyline. 7. Bondi to Coogee coastal walk

This is definitely one of the top things to do in Sydney and it’s so incredibly accessible from the city. This coastal route allows you to take in some of Australia’s incredible turquoise waters, amazing beaches and unbeatable swim spots. And of course, Bondi is arguably the most famous beach in Australia!

A teeny tiny 7 km east of the city drops you right at Bondi beach. From here, Coogee is just a 5 km walk south from Bondi, along a beautiful coastal stretch. Of course, this route can be done in reverse too!

You will first need to take a train from Central Station to Bondi Junction. Bondi Junction train station also has the bus station located there so all you need to do is follow the signs and find the stand for bus 333 or 380. After a short bus ride you’ll find yourself right at the spectacular Bondi Beach. To start the walk to Coogee, follow the road past the Icebergs Club and just keep going!

Top things to do on the Bondi to Coogee coastal walk

As you would expect, this walk is about the views and the water. Be sure to take your swimmers to enjoy a refreshing dip in the ocean pools at Bronte and Coogee, or go snorkelling at my favourite spot at Gordons Bay. Along the way you will cross over incredible rock formations and be able to see for miles along the coast, making it a photographers dream! The walk takes a couple of hours but it’s the perfect spot to take it easy and soak it all in. If you’re there over Saturday and Sunday, be sure to check out the Bondi Market too.

Manly is one of my all-time favourite day trips from the city. It’s so easy to get to and has a wonderful seaside feel to it. It’s a place to relax but still with heaps of things going on.

Manly is a suburb of Northern Sydney and is just a hop across the bay. One side of it is pretty sheltered whilst the main beach is great for surfing.

If you’re based in the North side of Sydney then you can easily catch buses to Manly, but if not, the best option is by ferry. Ferries run roughly every 20-30 minutes from Wharf 3 at Circular Quay and you get to enjoy the ride over past the Opera House and along the coastline.

Top things to do in Manly

Manly is full of things to do right from the moment you arrive at the Wharf. If you fancy a drink with a sea view then check out the Bavarian and make the most of their happy hour in the evenings. Either side of the wharf is Cabbage Tree Bay and Manly cove, of which both are great for swimming in calm waters. Cross over the road from the wharf and you’ll be walking along Manly Corso where you’ll find shops, restaurants and some great bars with rooftops. Manly Beach is great for relaxing and is also a popular surf spot, whilst Shelly Beach (the next beach along) is perfect for snorkelling and stand up paddleboarding. Up here you can also take a walk around North Head to get incredible views of the coastline.

• The Royal National Park –home to the Coast Track, one of Australia’s most popular two-day walks. There are several campsites in the park, just perfect for a budget camping trip.

If you like your holidays full of delicious eats, then we think these three options are perfect!

• The Southern Highlands – a great foodie escape with boutique cellar doors, great local restaurants and even truffle hunts!
• The Hunter Valley – Pokolbin in the heart of the Hunter Valley is one of the best places to stay in the region if you don’t want to drive too much. We stayed at Cypress Lakes on our last visit, and it was a great base for evening dining.
• Orange – with award-winning restaurants and its own annual food festival, Orange is a top choice for a gourmet getaway.
• Milton, Mollymook and Ulladulla – These towns may not immediately spring to mind when thinking of destinations known for their food scenes. Still, we were recently very impressed by the fantastic bars, restaurants and cellar door options we found here.

What are the best winter escapes for weekends from Sydney?

Instead of running north from the cold, why not embrace it we really don’t get to enjoy open fireplaces and bracing morning walks very often as Sydneysiders.

• The Blue Mountains – Along with its annual Winter fest and Christmas in July celebrations, the walking tracks in the mountains are perfect for weekend escapes in the winter. The cool weather is exactly what you need for exploring the hiking tracks in the World Heritage Listed Blue Mountains National Park, and in the evening, you can return to your accommodation for a big glass of red in front of the fire. Whether it’s a boutique hotel or a family-friendly vacation rental, there are a ton of great options across the mountain villages.
• Thredbo – if you fancy a quick adrenalin hit, it’s hard to go past a couple of days enjoying the NSW Snowy Mountains. Thredbo at the top of the mountain makes a great base and is the perfect place to enjoy the après-ski atmosphere.

With ample accommodation and activities for planning a romantic getaway, the Hunter Valley is a top choice for a romantic NSW Getaway. It’s an easy drive from Sydney and one of the best weekend choices for any wine lover. 

It makes a great long weekend option giving you two full days of wine tasting before you have to sober up for the drive home.

A popular spot for a quick weekend getaway from Sydney Kiama with its pretty Norfolk lined waterfront swells with weekend guests most warm Sundays. By staying for the weekend, you get the early morning and evenings without the crowds.

Our favourite things to do in Kiama include:

The second-largest city in NSW, Newcastle was once best known for its steelworks and coal mines. Today it offers a fantastic lifestyle and a vibe that had us seriously considering moving north away from Sydney after our last visit. This is a weekend getaway for when you don’t want to spend too much time driving.

One of the largest towns in Central NSW, most people who make the trip to Orange go to enjoy the cool-climate wines. There are 30 cellar doors to visit. The area also offers a great food scene. We, however, usually trek there to see family and friends, and in many years of doing this, we always find new things to do.

Orange is beautiful in spring and autumn, it’s bracingly cold in winter, but that can also be a lot of fun and a great time to sip red wine by an open fire.

On our most recent visit, thanks to the pandemic, most of the cellar doors were closed, so we spent our time exploring the great outdoors. A local put us onto The Falls Water Falls, at Mullion Range. If there has been some good rainfall before or during your visit, be sure to take the short, easy hike for the view above.

We also trekked the stairs to the top of Pinnacle Lookout and along with a sense of achievement that we actually made it, the view was well worth the effort!

5 Things you should do in Orange

• Grab some great local goodies and head to Lake Canobolas for a picnic
• Climb all the stairs to Pinnacle Lookout
• Treat yourself to a lovely meal in Millthorpe
• Book a tasting at Ferment , the wine centre in town.
• Pop into the excellent regional gallery and museum

Tip : If you have an extra day, take a drive to some of the surrounding villages like Manildra, Carcoar or Canowindra.

If your idea of the perfect weekend away involves walking trails and waterfalls, look no further than Kangaroo Valley, just a couple of hours south of Sydney. The scenery and wildlife here will have you wondering why you don’t visit more often.

The Southern Highlands towns of Berrima and Bowral are perfect for a winter getaway. This is the closest you can get to an English Country holiday in Australia.

• Book dinner at the wonderful Thai restaurant Paste in Mittagong
• Take a walk around Berrima Village

Bowral is our preferred base for a Southern Highlands break because of the number of good places to eat and drink. From here, you are just 15 minutes away from most of the other villages. This string of villages offers some of the best weekend getaways for Sydney’s winter months.

Distance from Sydney : 120km Driving time: 90 minutes south of Sydney to Bowral Public Transport rating : A car makes exploring easier but you can take a train from Central to Bowral in 2 hours and 20 minutes. Best time to visit:

Best known perhaps for Hyams Beach with its white sand, said to be among the whitest in the world, and crystal clear blue water. The Jervis Bay region is home to over 100 beaches in giving you ample opportunity to find your own favourite. Add to this great local produce and its own emerging wine region, and this south coast paradise is the perfect Sydney weekend getaway in our book.

Lush green hills and fantastic snorkelling and diving in the Jervis Bay Marine Park await only three hours’ drive south. Make the most of the bay by joining one of the many cruises, fishing charters or dive boats that leave from Huskinson. For an insanely romantic option book at Bannisters by the sea, the outdoor pool is one of the best along the NSW coast.

It’s insanely busy in summer, so try to visit at other times of the year for the best experience.

7 Great things to do in Jervis Bay

• Do the White Sands Walk from Greenfields Beach to Hyams Beach

The best Southern Highlands town for visiting what we refer to as the home of the trinity of waterfalls, Robertson is an easy and beautiful drive from Sydney.

The town has just enough to keep you busy for 2-3 days. There is a good range of dining options, lots of walking trails, some great small shops and plenty of lookouts to find.

The beautifully restored Robertson Hotel makes a fantastic base for your visit.

• Take in the views at Belmore, Carrington and Fitzroy Falls
• Have breakfast at Moonacres
• Take a walk through historic Burrawang and enjoy lunch in the pub garden
• Do a tasting at the Cheese Factory
• Laugh at the Big Potato, Australia’s lamest “big thing.”
• Taste test the pies at the town’s three local pie shops and declare your winner.
• Find a treasure at The Cool Room Emporium

Distance from Sydney : 140km Driving time: 1 hour and 45 minutes Public Transport rating : Possible – average 3 hours 10 mins. Best time to visit: Year-round – each season offers something unique, but autumn colours are stunning.

Right on the city’s doorstep, Bundeena is only an hour from Sydney’s CBD and easily reached by public transport. The town on the edge of the Royal National Park is a great base for the Coast Track walk, which traverses 26km south from its official start right in town.

Bundeena is home to numerous artists’ studios, and an art trail opens once a month, allowing visitors to peek inside and meet the artists in their studios. If you fancy a weekend exploring the park or just lazying by the beach in a town with an old school summer holiday vibe, this is an excellent choice.

• Visit the Aboriginal Rock engravings
• Ride the Tom Thumb Ferry
• Take a walk to Wedding Cake Rock
• Rent a kayak and explore the Port Hacking River

There are plenty of holiday rentals and also campsites in the Royal National Park if you want to get closer to nature.

Distance from Sydney : 55km Driving time: 1 hour Public Transport rating : Excellent, train to Cronulla then the Bundeena Ferry Best time to visit: year-round but lovely in Spring and Autumn when crowds are low, and it’s perfect weather for a walk.

The regional town of Maitland and the nearby village of Morpeth were one of our big surprises in 2020. A little over half an hour from both Newcastle and Cessnock it’s often passed by on the way to somewhere else but next time you are looking for a weekend getaway give this a shot.

The entire town of Morpeth is beautifully preserved and restored and the perfect base for exploring. Both here and in Maitland a short drive away there are excellent restaurants and cafes making it hard to decide where to eat. Check out where we ate on our last visit here.

If you want a weekend of adventure with some horse riding thrown in, then a visit to Glenworth Valley is a superb choice. Lying in the Central Coast Hinterland, the area is home to the towns that historically fed the city, including Peats Ridge and Mangrove Mountain.

If you love the outdoors and you have not discovered the Glenworth Valley, you are in for a treat. With endless opportunities to get your blood running. You can abseil, climb, kayak, hike, go quad biking or horse riding.

• Meet the locals at Walkabout Wildlife Sanctuary
• Try axe throwing at Glenworth Valley Outdoor Adventures

Distance from Sydney: 77km Driving time: 1 hour Public Transport rating: not recommended – the closest you can get easily is Gosford. It’s a 15-minute drive . Best time to visit : year-round but lovely in Spring and Autumn crowds are low, and it’s perfect weather for a walk.

Hawkesbury River weekend getaways are especially suited to aspiring boaties. You can rent a vessel to reach one of the many secluded properties that line the waterfront or book a houseboat for a weekend on the water.

• Take a tour with the Riverboat Postman while they deliver the mail
• Enjoy a meal on The Floating Oyster Wine Bar
• Learn all about pearls at the Broken Bay Pearl Farm

Distance from Sydney: 65km Driving time: 50 minutes Public Transport rating: Train to Hawkesbury River Station at Brooklyn Best time to visit : Near a bad time to visit, just bring the right clothes!

Surrounded by water on all sides, The Entrance offers surf beaches and accommodation overlooking Tuggerah Lake. A longtime favourite family getaway for Sydneysiders, and it’s easy to see why there is so much to do with kids.

From calm beaches along the lakefront to water play areas in the centre of town and, of course, the famous Pelican feeding, it is very easy to entertain the entire family here.

Couples might like to choose the Pullman Magenta shores or Kim’s Beachside Retreat.

• Watch the Pelican Feeding at Memorial Park daily at 3:15pm
• Take a swim at the ocean baths
• Explore the shops and cafes of Long Jetty

Distance from Sydney: 107km Driving time: 70 minutes Public transport rating: Yes, train to Gosford and bus to The Entrance (2.5hrs all up) Best time to visit : Spring and summer allow you to enjoy the water

Sitting at the end of the Bouddi Peninsula, Killcare is a bit of a secret for many, with its 1.6km long beach and the stunning Bouddi National Park almost enclosing the area. This is a paradise for bushwalkers and anyone who enjoys the beach.

• Walk the Maitland Bay Track in Bouddi National Park
• Visit the Box Head Lookout, Gerrin Lookout over the ocean and Alan Strom Lookout over Brisbane Water.
• Pop into the Distillery Botanica cellar door and try the local gin
• Swim at Lobster Beach
• Have breakfast at Fat Goose Cafe
• Check out nearby Copacabana Beach and Avoca Beach

Distance from Sydney : 103km Driving time : 1 hour, 30 minutes Public Transport rating : Possible but takes close to 3 hours with poor connections Best time to visit : Summer and spring for beach days but winter watching the moody ocean can be so relaxing.

With country charm in bucket loads, a weekend in Mudgee is a lovely way to relax with the perfect mix of rolling hills, historic buildings and wineries. While it’s a well-known escape for foodies, if you enjoy a good hike, then Ferntree Gully or Putta Bucca Wetlands will deliver just what you need.

Things to do on a weekend in Mudgee

• Stoll the Mudgee Farmers’ Market and try not to eat everything in sight!
• Try your hand fishing at Cudgegong Waters Park
• Explore the historic gold rush town of Gulgong
• Do a tasting at the charming Lowe Family Wine Co or another of the region’s 65 cellar doors.
• Spend some time (and dollars) in the shops along Market and Church Streets.
• Make your way to Flirtation Hill Lookout for a splendid view over the town.

Distance from Sydney : 266km Driving time : 3 hours, 30 minutes Public Transport rating : Possible but takes close to 3 hours with poor connections. Best time to visit : Mudgee is a great year-round destination.

Church Point, Cottage Point or Scotland Island, whichever of these idyllic waterfront locations you choose, you will feel you have left Sydney far behind. Paddle, swim or just sit and watch the world go by from a waterfront rental.

Things to include on your weekend getaways on Pittwater

• Eat Brunch at Cottage Point Inn
• Ride the ferry between the islands and explore them all
• Have drinks in the garden at the Pasadena
• Spend the day at the Basin
• Take a walk or two in Kur-Ring-Gai National Park

Distance from Sydney : 40km Driving time : 50 minutes Public Transport rating : Bus to Palm Beach and local ferry service Best time of year to visit : spring wildflowers are stunning but Pittwater is beautiful all year

A weekend in Bathurst is not just for motorsports enthusiasts. The town will be just as exciting for any history lover. As the oldest inland city in Australia, a stroll through the main street and a visit to the nearby towns will reward with some fine colonial architecture, including Abercrombie House.

Things you should do on a weekend in Bathurst

• Drive the Mount Panorama Motor Racing Circuit
• Explore the nearby gold rush towns of Sofala and Hill End
• Visit Mayfield Garden – a must in autumn and spring
• Check out one of the many local bush walks
• Spend time in one of the twenty museums

Distance from Sydney : 205km west of Sydney Driving time : 2 hours and 50 minutes Public Transport rating : Train (3hrs 45m) Best time of year to visit: Rug up in the winter but visit anytime. October when the motor racing comes to town can be expensive.

Two lighthouses guard Wollongong Harbour on the Illawarra Coast south of Sydney. The third biggest city in NSW may not immediately pop into mind when thinking about a weekend getaway, but there are plenty of reasons it should.

Make your way from Sydney through the Royal National Park and the famous Grand Pacific Drive. This tour will take you over the South Coast’s famous Seacliff Bridge and onto Wollongong via a string of beautiful beaches.

Things to do when you spend a weekend in Wollongong

• Visit Nan Tien Temple, the biggest Buddhist Temple in the Southern Hemisphere.
• Check out the city’s street art
• Take one of the region’s fantastic walks
• Check out all the lookouts from Stanwell Tops to Sublime Point
• Discover the collection at Wollongong Regional Gallery (it contains work by many of Australia’s greatest artists)
• Swim at all the Illawarra’s Beaches – Thirroul, Austinmer, Coledale and, of course, North Wollongong just for a start.

• Book a Black Truffle degustation at Turalla Truffles
• Visit the Saturday Southern Harvest Farmers Market
• Grab a meat pie from the Gunna Doo Bakery

Distance from Sydney : 277km Driving time: 3hrs and 20 minutes Public Transport rating : Train from Sydney stops at Bungendore and takes 3.5 hours. Best time to visit: It’s pretty cold in winter, and quite warm in summer but perfect the rest of the year.

We generally like shorter drive times on our weekend trips from sydney, less time in the car and more time exploring however if you like driving and don’t mind going a little further you could consider the following places:

• Port Macquarie – great coastal walks and family fun
• Forster – perennial favourite and home to some of the best NSW beaches
• Byron Bay – perhaps book into a resort and relax after the long drive or fly to Ballina and pick up a car.
• Snowy Mountains – something to offer at all times of the year hiking or skiing
• Coffs Harbour and the Waterfall Way – our favourite road trip of all time
• Batemans Bay – family holidays don’t get much more old school than a weekend in Batemans Bay.

In my very biased opinion, the best way to spend a weekend in Sydney is at the beach. Kick back on a sheltered Sydney Harbour beach or battle the waves on an ocean beach – either way, no need to leave the city to have a kick arse weekend.

But of course I’m all for outdoor adventures and exploration. And with beaches, mountains, and valleys all within 2-3 hours from the city, there are plenty of options for fun weekend trips from Sydney.

Here are some of the best Sydney weekend getaways, all within a few hours from the city:

The Northern Beaches

If you’re over Sydney’s city beaches (a notion my beach bummin’ self cannot comprehend), consider heading north to a new stretch of sand. From Manly up to Palm Beach you’ll find Sydney’s famed Northern Beaches – no less than 23 of them, in fact. The vibe up here is decidedly more chill, with small towns comprised more of affluent families than tourists – each one with its own beach or three.

For relaxed and/or romantic weekend getaways from Sydney, book an Airbnb for a weekend in one of the northern beach towns and base yourself there as you beach hop. Don’t miss hiking up the Barrenjoey Headland at Palm Beach for an epic view from Sydney’s northernmost point, kayaking or paddle boarding in Narrabeen Lake, or the gorgeous ocean pool in Mona Vale.

Just a 3 hour drive south of Sydney (and sadly disconnected from any effective public transport) lies Jervis Bay, one of the most popular weekend getaways from Sydney and home to some of Aussie’s legendary white sand beaches. Kite surfing and kangaroos are rampant here, but you can’t go wrong just sticking your toes in sand so fine it squeaks when you walk on it.

Jervis Bay is an excellent place to spot humpback whales (mid-May to mid-November) and bottlenose dolphins, and it’s well worth booking onto a boat tour that gets you up close to these majestic beings.

You can do Jervis Bay in a (very long) day, but it tends to get cloudy and windy by the afternoon so it’s better to plan for some morning beach time if possible and do it as an overnight trip instead.

Jervis Bay is also quite large and the towns and beaches around the bay are pretty spread out, so the more time you can spend here, the better. Hyams Beach is by far the most famous part of Jervis Bay, but there’s not much of a town around it so if you’re looking for cafes and bars, head north to Huskisson or Vincentia.

I recommend camping in Jervis Bay, either in Booderee National Park on the south end, or at Honeymoon Bay on the north end. Campsites can be tricky to secure on summer weekends, so be sure to book your site at Booderee at least a month or two in advance. Honeymoon Bay is first come, first served, with no reservations in advance.

If you don’t want to rough it, there are some excellent accommodation options around Jervis Bay, both on Airbnb and at some glamping properties (see my post below on Worrowing, which was one of my favorite Sydney weekend getaways last winter!).

How to get there: 3 hour drive south from Sydney

Royal National Park

If it’s outdoor adventures and dramatic coastal views you seek, Royal National Park is your jam. And, bonus: it’s one of the best Sydney weekend getaways by train.

To fully appreciate this gorgeous region, you should tackle the 27km coastal track – it’ll spoil you with endless views of the eastern Aussie coast dotted with beautiful beaches, creeks, and waterfalls. You can hike the whole thing in a (very long) day, OR you can camp at North Era (be sure to book in advance!) and hike with all of your food and gear on your back – which is exhausting, but so worth it.

Alternatively, you could opt for a day trip to the Royal and hire a car for a day, stopping off throughout the park to enjoy viewpoints and short walks. Wattamolla, Wedding Cake Rock, and the Figure 8 Pool are a few of the most popular places to visit in the park.

How to get there: Ferry from Cronulla to Bundeena, then trek 27km and catch the train back from Otford. Otherwise, Bundeena is an hour drive south from Sydney.

Kangaroo Valley

In terms of more relaxing weekend getaways from Sydney, head down to Kangaroo Valley and immerse yourself in nature. Kangaroo Valley sits in between the Southern Highlands and the NSW South Coast and thus is often overlooked for its more convenient neighboring regions – but this only makes it more peaceful and relaxing!

This trip is best done by renting a car for a weekend and staying at a B&B or Airbnb that has enough amenities and beautiful landscapes to make you forget all about the stresses of city life, or you could opt to camp on the Kangaroo River.

There’s heaps to explore in and around Kangaroo Valley, from strolling through the town village to wine tasting at Yarrawa Estate to kayaking or canoeing down the Kangaroo River . But it’s equally as enjoyable to just kick back and enjoy the verdant green landscapes.

How to get there: 2 hour drive south of Sydney

Blue Mountains

The Blue Mountains are one of the best Sydney weekend getaways by train – simply hop on the train from Central Station and get off in Katoomba about 2 hours later. From here, you can access viewpoints and hiking trails sans vehicle, though if you do have your own wheels, you’ll have lots more options here.

If it’s your first time visiting the Blue Mountains, base yourself in Katoomba and be sure to check out the famous Three Sisters, ride the world’s steepest railway , and wander the cute shops and cafes in town.

If this aint your first Blue Mountains rodeo, consider venturing outside of Katoomba and:

• Booking a rock climbing or abseiling trip (recommended: High and Wild )
• Taking a hike (recommended: Grand Canyon loop, National Pass, Leura Cascades)
• Scoping out the gasp-worthy views at one or more of the best scenic viewpoints (recommended: Govetts Leap, Lincoln’s Rock, Hanging Rock)

Newnes Plateau

File this one under Super-Adventurous, Off-Grid Weekend Getaways From Sydney. Newnes is the jumping off point for a maze of 4WD tracks, where you could easily spend a whole weekend adventuring and getting lost in your 4WD vehicle (you can rent a fully kitted out 4WD here ).

If you need more than that, then there are heaps of canyons to explore across Newnes Plateau – some you’ll need proper gear for, while others you can hike to without actually having to canyon through (such as Deep Pass Canyon and River Caves Canyon).

Either way, camping is the best way to experience a weekend in the Newnes forest. The 4WD tracks are accessible from behind the Zig Zag Railway station.

How to get there: 3 hour drive NW of Sydney to reach Newnes

Orange / Mudgee

Foodie weekend trips from Sydney, anybody? Both Orange and Mudgee definitely fit the bill here, and being a bit further afield than other wine regions near Sydney, they’re not too busy or touristy.

I’m grouping both towns together here because they’re similar and happen to be in the same general area (northwest of Sydney and past the Blue Mountains)… but note that they are 2 hours apart so can be done on two separate weekend trips from Sydney.

Wine tasting is a must in Orange and Mudgee, with a slew of award-winning wineries that specialize in cold climate wines. There’s also some really excellent local produce on hand, which you can sample at the pick-your-own-fruit farms or at some of the gourmet restaurants in town.

Really, the best way to do it is to rent a house with a group of friends (or a cottage with your partner) and spend the weekend cozying up enjoying the local wine.

How to get there: Both Orange and Mudgee are a 3 hour 45 minute drive NW of Sydney.

Hunter Valley

Wine tasting is the name of the game in The Hunter.

Hunter Valley makes for a fab Sydney weekend getaway, particularly in cooler months when you can book a cozy Airbnb or hotel room and spend your evenings by the fireplace enjoying a bottle of local wine.

Unless you’re able to wrangle yourself a DD, you’ll want to book a spot on a half day wine tasting tour . Most of them depart from Pokolbin or nearby.

Either way, you’ll have yourself a delightfully tipsy day sampling New South Wales’ finest wines (semillon is a must) while enjoying the gorgeous vineyard landscapes along the way.

How to get there: Book a day tour from Sydney, or drive about 2 hours north and explore the vineyards independently.

The Hawkesbury River

I’ve yet to cross this hidden gem off my Sydney weekend getaways list, but all signs I’ve seen point toward the Hawkesbury being a worthy trip. If you go with a group of friends or family, rent a houseboat – it’s definitely the thing to do on the river.

Otherwise, there’s loads more outdoor adventures to be had on the Hawkesbury: kayaking, fishing, tubing, bushwalking, swimming, and more.

The Hawkesbury is known for its fresh local produce as well. If you’re in the area, follow the Hawkesbury Harvest Farm Gate Trail and be sure to stop at a few of the orchards, farmers markets, or vineyards to sample some of the region’s finest (hint: try the apple cider in Bilpin).

How to get there: 1 hour drive northwest of Sydney

Ku-ring-gai Chase National Park

This Sydney weekend getaway is only for the camping enthusiasts I’m afraid, as the only place you’re allowed to stay overnight here is a campground.

If that’s you, then you’ll love pitching your tent at The Basin in Ku-ring-gai National Park, which is best accessed by ferry from Palm Beach. You can hire kayaks and stand-up paddleboards from a vendor at the campground, or hike to some of the other beaches and coves around Ku-ring-gai. The views of Pittwater from higher up in the park on the trails are exceptional.

How to get there: 1 hour drive north of Sydney, + a 30 minute ferry ride if traveling via Palm Beach

Wollongong is an easy train ride away from Sydney, so it’s one of the short trips from Sydney that can be done without a car. However, I think the best part of a trip to Wollongong is the journey there.

If you drive down to Wollongong, you should definitely stop at:

• Old Helensburgh Station to see the glow worm tunnel (maybe stop here on the way home, as it should be dark in order for you to see the glow worms).
• Bald Hill Lookout just south of Royal National Park, for an incredible view of the South Coast of NSW.
• The Sea Cliff Bridge, a very picturesque bridge winding along the edge of the coast that you’ll drive over en route to the ‘gong.
• Nan Tien Temple

How to get there: Wollongong is a 1 hour 45 minute trip south from Sydney, both by train and by car.

The Southern Highlands

If you’re craving some countryside vibes on your weekend trips from Sydney, head south to the Southern Highlands . Here you’ll find quaint villages amidst rolling hills, and slightly further afield there are waterfalls and rainforest walks galore (see the next Sydney weekend getaway on the list for more into on these!).

Bowral is the main town in the region and is an absolute delight for antique shopping and frolicking, particularly in autumn when all the leaves are changing colors. It’s also one of the best weekend getaways from Sydney in the winter, as you can experience the colder weather and then cozy up by a log fire at your accommodation.

The Southern Highlands is a top spot for wine tasting near Sydney as well. I can recommend Centennial Vineyards for their beautiful grounds, and Southern Highlands Winery for their delicious wines.

How to get there: 1.5 hour drive south of Sydney

The Illawarra

Between the Southern Highlands and the NSW South Coast sits a lush region full of picturesque waterfalls, most of which can be accessed by following route A48 from Moss Vale and driving east. This makes for one of the most amazing Sydney weekend getaways for nature lovers keen to camp, hike, and get wet! 

The waterfalls all vary in terms of size, swimmability, and access, and can be found in 3 national parks:

• Morton NP: Fitzroy Falls, Belmore Falls
• Budderoo NP: Carrington Falls, Gerringong Falls, Minnamurra Falls
• Macquarie Pass NP: Jump Rock, Cascade Falls

My personal favorites are Belmore Falls and Jump Rock, both of which can be hiked to and swum at. I HIGHLY recommend getting yourself a copy of Wild Swimming Sydney , which has detailed descriptions and directions to all of the above waterfalls and more.

The Minamurra Rainforest Centre in Budderoo NP offers walking platforms through the rainforest and access to Minnamurra Falls. It’s also the place to go if you want to hear lyrebirds in the wild.

I like to camp at Carrington Falls when I’m exploring this area, but you can also opt to book accommodation somewhere between Moss Vale, Kiama, and Shellharbour.

Newcastle is one of the best weekend trips from Sydney by train ( especially on Sundays , when transport is capped at $2.80 for the whole day no matter how far you travel).

Like Sydney, Newcastle is a city of beaches – just on a much smaller scale, and with more of a country feel. Don’t be fooled by its size, though, as there are plenty of things to do in Newcastle !

Natural highlights in Newcastle include the Bogey Hole (a picturesque rock pool), the view from Fort Scratchley, and coastal walks. I’ve heard there is also some great coffee to be had here!

Central Coast

The Central Coast is one of the easiest weekend getaways from Sydney, as it’s only about an hour away from the city. This stretch of coast is famed for its golden sand beaches and laidback vibes.

One option is to base yourself in Avoca or Terrigal, the two main beach towns in the region, and stay in an Airbnb or hotel. Terrigal is much more bustling, while Avoca is quieter.

Or for an entirely different sort of getaway, you could opt to camp in Bouddi National Park just south and explore the gorgeous beaches there. Be sure to hike part (or all) of the Bouddi Coast Walk, it’s a real gem.

Lake Macquarie

Lake Macquarie is one of the most underrated weekend getaways from Sydney. At only 1.5 hours away by car, it’s a quick trip; and more importantly, it boasts outdoor adventures galore!

On Lake Macquarie itself, there are heaps of water sports on offer: hire a kayak, stand-up paddleboard, or boat, or book onto a jet boat tour and explore all the little coves around the lake.

Lake Mac happens to sit very close to the coastline and is a quick drive from several beautiful beaches. Caves Beach, Redhead Beach, and Catherine Hill Bay Beach are all beautiful.

How to get there: 1.5 hour drive north from Sydney

Port Stephens

Yep, you guessed it – more beach weekend getaways from Sydney! Port Stephens is about 3 hours north of Sydney and has a host of both calm bay beaches and rugged ocean beaches (even a nude beach!).

It’s most convenient to base yourself in Nelson Bay and explore the Port Stephens region. Whale watching, diving, and SUP are popular aquatic activities here, but also be sure to walk to the Mt. Tomaree summit to catch the view in the photo above.

The nearby Stockton sand dunes are fit for frolicking and quad biking, should you need a break from all that beachin’.

Myall Lakes

Just north of Port Stephens is Myall Lakes National Park , a collection of freshwater lakes that sit just inland from the coast.

This Sydney weekend getaway is all about nature, so book a campsite at Mungo Brush or one of the many other campgrounds in the park and enjoy some kayaking, fishing, and walking around the lakes. Mungo Brush is nestled between the lake and the beach, so you can also enjoy some time at the sea while you’re here.

Not into camping? You can opt to stay in nearby Seal Rocks or Blueys Beach, but those towns are a bit further away and might make for a bit too much driving on a weekend trip. The closest town to the national park is Bulahdelah, which you’ll drive through anyway to reach Myall Lakes – so that’s the more practical base to explore the park on a weekend trip.

Off The Grid

Lastly, one of my new favorite weekend getaways from Sydney: the off-the-grid, digital detox, tiny home or cabin in the woods. Basically, it’s just you in minimalist digs somewhere in nature, preferably without wifi or mobile signal.

Several remote, tiny homes have popped up around New South Wales in recent years, largely appealing to the Instagram generation for their hipster-esque aesthetics and devastatingly scenic landscape backdrops. Here’s where to find them:

• Unyoked and In2thewild have a limited collection of tiny homes scattered around NSW
• Glamping Hub and Airbnb have some tiny homes, bell tents, and cabins available for booking (but they’re in amongst all the other ‘regular’ accommodation options, so you have to dig a little to find them).
• Several ‘bush retreats’ have sprung up around the state, offering multiple of these tiny homes spread out around one property (e.g. Kimo Estate , Worrowing , and Paperbark Camp ).

The whole point is to relax, disconnect, and enjoy the peace and quiet outdoors – so when you book a stay at one of these places, you don’t spend the whole day doing things and then return in the evening and crash. Instead, you spend the entire weekend in your tiny home reading, chilling out, sitting around the campfire, and enjoying each others’ company.

If you are looking for the best day trips from Sydney, you will love these 12 fantastic destinations. National parks, beaches, towns & more!

As a former Sydneysider (who dreams of moving back), I have been fortunate enough to go on several day trips from Sydney. I absolutely loved these trips as they allowed me to explore the area close to the city I love and my time in Australia would not have been the same without them.

These Sydney day trips allowed me to explore stunning national parks that I wanted to visit over and over again and charming villages with cozy cafés and other sights. While exploring these places, I fell in love with hikes and saw amazing sunsets. And I cannot wait to visit every single location again.

However, I never got the chance to see everything on my list, so fortunately fellow travelers decided to share everything you need to know about these amazing day trip destinations. Therefore, this list contains all the best destinations that are no more than 3 hours away from Sydney’s Central Business District.

30 minutes north of Sydney Central Business District

A short 30-minute ferry ride from Circular Quay in the Sydney CBD, Manly might not be far from Sydney in distance, but with its sweeping sandy beach and seaside feel it seems like a world away. If you want an easy day trip from Sydney that doesn’t need a car, then, add Manly to your itinerary.

Manly is all about sand and the sea so start off with a trip to the famous beach – it’s the perfect place to learn to surf. If you prefer to snorkel, a walk east along the seaside path brings you to the sheltered waters of Shelley Beach. You can also explore the area with a kayak.

Clear-View Kayak Rental (4 Hours)

Head west instead and you’ll find one of Sydney’s most Instagram-friendly sights, the Manly Wormhole, a hidden tunnel in the cliff that brings you to a beautiful sea view.

When you get hungry; the famous Steyne pub on the seafront offers casual dining for the whole family. Or, for something a bit more special, join the beautiful people at Hugo’s on Manly Wharf.

Finish your day at nearby North Head enjoying one of the spooky ghost tours that take place at the old Quarantine Station located high on the cliffs overlooking Sydney. Be sure to read what to expect from a Q Station Ghost Tour !

How to get there: Jump on the ferry at Circular Quay. Choose from the Manly Fast Ferry which will get you there in 20 minutes, or the slightly slower, but cheaper Sydney Ferries service.

Where to stay in Manly : Where to Stay: If you want to prolong your visit, the Q Station hotel offers a stay with a sense of history. The rooms are located in the buildings that made up the old Quarantine Station. Closer to the beach, the Quest Manly comes highly recommended and the apartment-style rooms have gorgeous sea views.

2. Royal National Park

50 minutes south of Sydney CBD

One of the best day trips from Sydney is the beautiful Royal National Park. South of the city center and is easily accessible, the Park covers a stunning stretch of coastline and offers beautiful beaches, rainforests, and coastal bushlands.

Sydney’s Royal National Park is great for bushwalking, cycling, surfing, and whale watching during the annual whale migration from May to October. There are scenic walking trails, waterfalls, and a stunning coastal landscape to explore. 

The Royal National Park has a selection of lovely picnic areas, and Audley is a favorite. It’s fun to relax on the grass under a gum tree with a picnic and to paddle up the river in a hired canoe to secluded swimming holes.

At Bundeena there’s a lovely beach and a café. Relax on the sand or head off on the Coastal walking track. Visit the aboriginal rock carvings at Jibbon Head or hike to Wedding Cake Rock, Eagle Head Rock, or Curracurrong Falls, a waterfall that plunges straight into the ocean from high on the cliffs.

If you enjoy surfing, head to Garie Beach. It’s a pristine stretch of sand that faces the open ocean and has a reliable swell.  Nearby Wattamolla is a lovely scenic spot that offers swimming for all the family. There’s a picnic area, and children can paddle and swim safely in the inlet.

Getting there: It’s easiest to drive into the Royal National Park, but you don’t need a car to visit. Just catch a train from Sydney Central to Cronulla. Take the ferry across to Bundeena, and a shuttle bus will take you from the ferry to the most popular places inside the  Park. If you’re looking for the best things to do in Sydney, consider visiting the Royal National Park. It is one of the top day trips from Sydney and makes a great day out.

3. Palm Beach

1 hour north of Sydney

Palm Beach is a beautiful seaside town, located around an hour’s drive north of Sydney. It is great for surfing and other water sports. You will love the crystal clear waters and the many attractions around the beach.

It is located at the top of the peninsula, so you can enjoy the surf beach which is one of the best beaches on the East Coast of Australia , and the side facing the Pittwater Lagoon, which is more peaceful. It can be crowded in summer, but luckily the beach is large enough that you can always find a place away from the crowds.

One of the best things to do in Palm Beach is to hike to the Barrenjoy Lighthouse. It is located at the very top of the peninsula and has some of the best scenery around. You will be able to enjoy panoramic views of one of the best beaches on the east coast of Australia, and hiking is very easy.

It only takes 30 minutes, and although it may be steep in some places, even beginners can easily master it so you do not need exceptional fitness levels. The Barrenjoy Lighthouse is a great place for a picnic and a quick rest before returning and the views are worth the hike.

Hot to get to Palm Beach : If you want to visit this amazing Sydney day trip destination, you can either drive there or take the bus. The L90 bus connects Sydney CBD with Palm Beach and the bis ride takes 1:30 h.

Where to stay near Palm Beach : If you want to stay longer, you should stay at the Palm Beach Bed & Breakfast or rent the Bnb on Burrendong if you are traveling with a bigger group. Another great nearby accommodation is the Refuge Cove on Pittwater .

4. Stanwell Tops

1 hour south of Sydney

Stanwell Tops is just over an hour’s drive south of Sydney. However, you can get there via train (which will take approximately 1.5 hours). Stanwell Tops is a beautiful coastal suburb in the Wollongong area of New South Wales, Australia. This makes it the perfect day trip from Sydney as the driving distance is not that far. 

There is plenty to do around this area, but the main attraction would be Stanwell Tops lookout. If you head towards the Lawrence Hargrave monument, this would be the best view in this area. Here, you can spend hours watching people hang glide. 

If you have driven down for the day, you must visit the Sea Cliff Bridge. You can choose to drive over the 665 meters long bridge or park your car and walk across it. However, if you want to take a detour and climb the mountain, the view from the top is worth it. 

The best place to eat is the Scarborough Hotel, with clifftop views to die for and a beer garden that is hands down the best part of the trip. Depending on when you plan to travel there, you may get a glimpse of a whale on the horizon. With live music on many afternoons, this is the perfect place to spend your day trip from Sydney. And the food is pretty good too. 

Where to stay in Stanwell Tops : Headlands Austinmer Beach is not far from The Scarborough Hotel if you plan to stay overnight. The self-contained apartments with ocean views are ideal for a weekend away at any time of the year.

5. Blue Mountains National Park

1:30 h west of Sydney

The Blue Mountains are located west of the city and are likely the most popular day trip from Sydney. In fact, one could even argue that you have not really been to Sydney if you have yet to visit this National Park. Named after the intense blue haze that covers the area and that is caused by the eucalyptus trees, the Blue Mountains are a natural wonderland.

Here, you have waterfalls like the 187 meters high Wentworth Falls, cliffs, eucalyptus forests, and in some areas even ancient rainforests. And if you have always dreamed of seeing glow worms in caves , you can do so by visiting the abandoned Railway tunnel near Lithgow.

With all these amazing places, you can plan many day trips from Sydney and never run out of new things to do in the Blue Mountains .

If you only have one day and are visiting the area for the first time, you should hike along the Prince Henry Cliff Walk from Katoomba to Leura. There are many scenic viewpoints along the way including Echo Point Lookout, which offers the best view of the Three Sisters.

The walk also takes you past Katoomba Falls and the Leura Cascades and is therefore a perfect combination of what the Blue Mountai ns have to offer.

Overall, I think the proximity to the Blue Mountains and other national parks is one of the things that make Sydney worth visiting .

How to get to the Blue Mountains: It takes 1:30 hour to drive to Katoomba, but if you want to go hiking, it is best to catch a train from Sydney Central. The train ride is two hours long and also stops in Leura, which makes it perfect for a hiking day trip from Sydney. And if you go on the weekends, you can even save money thanks to the weekend travel cap of the Opal Card.

Where to stay in the Blue Mountains : If you want to turn your day trip from Sydney into a weekend trip, you should stay at the Echoes Boutique Hotel . The rooms have an incredible view over the surrounding area.

1:30 h south of Sydney

Bowral  is in the New South Wales Southern Highlands. It is one of those day trips from Sydney that has a bit of something for everyone. Anyone with even a passing interest in sport will know Bowral is home to one of Australia’s greatest sporting heroes, Don Bradman. However, Bowral has a lot to offer beyond cricket.

While the International Cricket Hall of Fame will be on the to-do list for some, these days Bowral is known for its café, shopping, and gallery scene. Green Lane featuring Harry’s on the Green, is full of hip cafes and restaurants.

Dirty Janes is in this precinct. Check out their eclectic range of antiques and finish with a sumptuous high tea. Plantation and The Press Shop are two more of the many cafes to try.

Another feature of the town is its parks and gardens. Each September Bowral bursts into color with the Tulip Festival in Corbett Gardens. The Southern Highlands Botanic Gardens, Cherry Tree Walk, and Mount Gibraltar Lookout are all great spots for walks and picnics.

How to get there: Bowral is 90 minutes southwest of Sydney, take the Hume Highway via Liverpool. Having a car will let you easily get to the sites around the town. If you want a scenic, but longer, drive back to Sydney, you can return along the coast. There are also up to 3 train services a day departing from Central Station. Return fares are about $25, and the trip takes just under 2 hours.

Where to stay in Bowral : If you spend a weekend in Bowral, you must treat yourself to a night or two in one of its country estates. They combine old-world charm with contemporary luxuries and are a hallmark of the area. Peppers Craigieburn , The Coach House , and Manor House are all good accommodation options.

1:50 h south of Sydney

The picturesque village of Kiama is 125 km south of Sydney on the Illawarra Coast. With the scenery on the drive down almost as lovely as the destination, this is one prettiest day trips from Sydney.

Situated on a natural harbor, Kiama boasts seven beaches and two beautiful rock pools, so this is the perfect spot for a summer day trip. However, there are plenty of things to do in Kiama year-round, including a popular 20 km hiking trail.

The track follows the coastline past some of the area’s most stunning scenery, notably Cathedral Rocks, and is famous for whale spotting between June and October. 

There is a buzzing main street with loads of cafes and restaurants that will have you struggling to choose just one place for lunch. A popular choice is Otis Deli, owned by ex-Ottolenghi head chef Emily Herbert. 

Before you head home, be sure to drop by the famous blowhole, which is easy to find right by the Kiama lighthouse. People have been coming to see this natural feature for over 100 years. 

How to get there: Kiama is easily reached from Sydney by road or train. From the city center, it is 125 km south via the M1 motorway. The trip usually takes about 1:40 hours but turn off at Stanwell Tops and take the Princes Highway (A1) along the coast so you can experience the stunning SeaCliff Bridge and Illawara Beaches as you make your way south. The train trip takes 2hrs 20 min and travels via the Royal National Park before following the coast the rest of the way with views equally as lovely as the road trip. 

Where to stay in Kiama : You will find plenty of accommodation options in this pretty seaside town, from serviced apartments and holiday rentals to the Surf Beach Holiday Park on the headland.  Nova Kiama and the Harbour Cabins are great options.

2 hours south of Sydney

Located at the Crooked River, this Gerroa is really close to the amazing Seven Mile Beach, which happens to be an amazing spot to watch the sunset. With its natural sights, the area around Gerroa is an ideal city getaway or day trip from Sydney.

The Black Head Reserve at the tip of the Gerroa headland is only a 15-minute drive from the city center and is a must-see as it offers an incredible view of Seven Mile Beach and the coastal area north of Gerroa. 

Additionally, it is the perfect place to whale watch when the whales migrate south from September to November and north from May to August. There are rock pools just north of the headland, so be sure to head there for an hour or two. In addition to that, there are some easy walking tracks in the area.

If you are just starting out, Seven Mile Beach is the perfect place to surf, as the waves tend to be ideal for surfing newbies and intermediate surfers. The beach is also the location of Surf Camp Australia. Therefore, you can easily book a surfing lesson while there.

After exploring the area, you should grab a bite at the Gerroa Boat Fishermans Club. The atmosphere there is great and so is the food.

All in all, Gerroa is a great place to escape the city for a day or two and one of the best day trips from Sydney if you want to relax in nature while venturing slightly off-the-beaten-path.

How to get to this Sydney day trip destination: If you are driving, it takes two hours to drive to Gerroa. If you do not have a car, you can take the hourly train from Sydney’s central station to Kiama Station and then catch a bus or a taxi from Kiama to Gerroa. If you do not want to take the train and do not mind transferring twice, you can take a bus that runs hourly.

Where to stay in Gerroa : The Seven Mile Beach Holiday Park has everything from camping sites to safari tents and cabins right at the beach. If you are looking for a vacation rental and are traveling with a group of friends, you will love Ocean Breeze , Secret Spot , or The Sands .

Berry , located approximately two hours drive south of the CBD, is the perfect place for a day trip from Sydney. This historic town is a favorite with Sydneysiders as it features fantastic food options, quirky shops, and unique scenery available to be discovered on hikes just outside the town.  

Leaving Sydney early will get you into Berry just in time to enjoy a lovely brunch and a coffee at Milkwood Bakery on the main street. After the two-hour drive, it is the perfect stop for a quick pick-me-up before a morning of shopping or hiking commences. 

Next up, head ten minutes out of town to the starting point for the Drawing Room Rocks bushwalk. This uphill trek might be tough, but the stunning panoramic views that stretch all the way to the ocean at the top are well worth the climb.  

Finally, stop into one of Berry’s many foodie destinations for a late lunch or early dinner. And if you’re on the go, be sure to stock up on fresh cinnamon donuts from the famous Berry Donut Van. 

Getting to Berry: The best option to get to Berry from Sydney is to drive through the beautiful scenery of the Royal National Park all the way down the coast. Alternatively, there is a train station in Berry serviced from the CBD if you do not have a car. 

Where to stay in Berry : Berry has fantastic accommodation options to suit every budget. The Berry Village Boutique Motel has simple rooms that will definitely suit most tastes for an overnight stay. For something a little more luxe, the Berry Inn has gorgeous apartment-style rooms (some that come equipped with spa baths!).

10. Kangaroo Valley

With its charming countryside, dramatic sandstone escarpment, epic waterfalls, and quirky cafes, Kangaroo Valley makes for a perfect day trip from Sydney. It lies 150 kilometers south of Sydney, but it makes you feel like you are in a different world entirely. And there are so many  things to do in Kangaroo Valley   that once you discover it, you’ll keep coming back.

Kangaroo Valley is all about winding mountain roads, epic waterfalls, and sweeping viewpoints. The valley’s three waterfalls: Belmore, Fitzroy, and Carrington Falls are some of the biggest and prettiest in the region, so make sure to check out at least one of them.

For the best views, head to Cambewarra Mountain lookout. It offers one of the longest panoramas in Australia, and there is also a cozy restaurant at the top of the Mountain.

The road to the small village of Kangaroo Valley passes over the incredible Hamden Bridge – a grand Victorian structure with medieval-style towers at each end. Its appearance is all the more striking for the tranquil simplicity of its rural surroundings. You can hire kayaks at Kangaroo Valley Safari, right by the bridge, and spend a couple of hours paddling along Kangaroo River.

And, yes, of course, there are kangaroos in Kangaroo Valley. A good place to see them is Bendeela campground, that’s better known for its large population of wombats.

How to get to Kangaroo Valley: Unfortunately, there is no public transport in this part of the state and the only way to reach Kangaroo Valley from Sydney is by driving 159 km along the Princess Highway. On the plus side, this means that the valley doesn’t get crowded and retains its relaxed laid-back atmosphere.

Where to stay in Kangaroo Valley : Kangaroo Valley has an impressive variety of accommodation options from award-winning luxury villas to farm stays and rustic cottages. For a touch of luxury check out Crystal Creek Meadows ; for mid-range country, comfort consider The Laurels B&B ; and if you are looking for a budget-friendly option, Quaint & Rustic in The Village is very cute.

11. Port Stephens: Nelson Bay & Stockton Sand Dunes

2:30 hours north of Sydney

Based on the fact that Port Stephans is twice as big as Sydney’s Port Jackson, it should not surprise that there are many things to do in Port Stephens . Thanks to this wide range, this Sydney day trip should offer something to suit everyone’s taste.

There are 26 beaches including Zenith Beach and the Stockton Bight Sand Dunes, which happen to be the longest sand dunes in the Southern Hemisphere with a length of 32 km.

They are the ideal place to spend a few hours if you love sandboarding, want to go on a quad tour, or explore them with a 4WD. While they are not as high as the Lancelin Sand Dunes , they are definitely worth a visit.

Eat lunch or an early afternoon snack at one of the many restaurants and cafés in Nelson Bay and check out the lighthouse that offers a great view similar to that of the Gan Gan Lookout.

In the afternoon you can go hiking in Mt Tamaree National Park. The most popular hike is the Mount Tamaree Summit hike. Be sure to head to one of the viewpoints or beaches to watch the sunset, as Port Stephens is one of the best sunset spots in the state.

Other great things to do during a Sydney day trip to Port Jackson are animal encounters. If you want to stick to the land, you can go koala spotting in Tilligerry Habitat Reserve. 

But if you feel like going on a cruise, you have the chance to meet some of the 140 local bottlenose dolphins that call this port their home. During the whale migration between May and November, you can also go on whale watching cruises .

And if you are a scuba diver, you will love during here as there are many nudibranchs. Additionally, you can dive off the coast of Broughton Island where you will find a Grey Nurse Shark colony.

Getting there: If you are not driving, you can catch a train to Newcastle and then take the bus to Port Stephens. Alternatively, you can book the Sydney Express Coach Service by Port Stephens Coaches.

Where to stay in Port Stephens : If you are traveling with a camper van or do not want to spend too much money, you should stay at the Halifax Holiday Park , which is close to the Nelson Bay lighthouse. Other great, but more expensive, accommodations are the Ramada Resort , the Port Stephens Koala Sanctuary , and The Retreat .

12. Hunter Valley

3 hours north of Sydney

Roughly 3 hours north of Sydney lies the  Hunter Valley wine region .  Famous for its Semillon and Chardonnay, it’s one of the most iconic places to visit in Australia. Hunter Valley is home to over 150 cellar doors, each unique in their own way. From sloping hills to lush vineyards, sparse landscapes, and more – Hunter Valley certainly is a bucket list destination.

Spring and Autumn are the best times to visit Hunter Valley, but the region offers a memorable experience no matter the time of year.

Briar Ridge Vineyard offers a relaxed setting under the trees while Glandore Estate Wines is a great place to enjoy a chocolate and wine pairing.

Foodies will love Amanda’s on the Edge and Bistro Molines for their spectacular fine dining experiences while others may prefer to go hot air ballooning or explore the Hunter Valley Gardens.

There are many tour operators that offer day trips from Sydney to Hunter Valley. These include tastings at four wineries as well as a lunch at one of them.

This is a great option for those travelers who have little time in Sydney yet still want to escape the city and discover more of the New South Wales countryside.

Visa-free travel to China welcomed by people wanting to reunite with family

Jenny Zhang has plans to travel to China soon to reunite with her 100-year-old mum, and she has welcomed a move to give Australians visa-free entry for short trips.

"This is the best policy. It will provide great convenience to Chinese people living in Australia," she said.

"The Chinese community is very happy about this news."

The 15-day visa-free travel for Australians was announced by Chinese Premier Li Qiang on Monday, after a formal meeting with Prime Minister Anthony Albanese.

"We agreed to provide each other with reciprocal access to five-year multiple entry visas for tourism, business and visiting family members — so as to better facilitate personal exchanges, China will also include Australia in its Visa Waiver Program," the premier said.

This change will also save Australians about $110, the current cost for a single-entry tourist visa.

The new visa-free travel scheme is due to come in within the next few months.

China's tourism industry peaked in 2019 at a value of $580 billion and has been recovering slowly, according to Statista.

They had forecast that it could take another five years to bounce back to pre-pandemic levels.

Not everyone happy with move

While Ms Zhang was thrilled with the upcoming change, Ramila Chanisheff, the president of the Australian Uyghur Tangritagh Women's Association said it would not help members of her community.

"Our family members … we can not even talk to them — let alone visit them," she told the ABC.

"Not all of us will be given visas to visit our family members. And if we do, we will be worried about our safety."

Dawa Sangmo, the Chinese liaison officer of the Tibet Information Office in Canberra raised similar worries.

"The visa-free policy is not only an issue that relates to our safety, but a matter that is more beneficial to China and its government," she told the ABC.

There was not much detail in the announcement, but Premier Li did mention it would be "reciprocal", making it easier for Chinese travellers to enter Australia.

According to the Australian Bureau of Statistics, the second highest amount of tourists visiting Australia came from China, only behind arrivals from New Zealand, as of April this year.

However, overall, the amount of people travelling out of China is down 40 per cent from pre-COVID levels in 2019, Reuters reported.
