Let’s start from the basics; cue  Ermou Street . Below Syntagma Square , a delightful pedestrian street spreads, with a huge collection of shops selling all kinds of things and some of the  best romantic hotels in Athens .

There, you will find -mainly- the biggest commercial chain stores, as well as cute little independent shops scattered in between.

From  Sephora and Mac for cosmetics to  Foot Locker  for athletic gear, Zara  for clothing, and Flying Tiger for quirky bits and bobs, Ermou St. combines a large variety of stores with a welcoming and friendly atmosphere that gets exceptionally festive around Christmas in Greece .

Monastiraki Square

shopping tourism greece

Walking a little further down, you can find the famous flea market of Monastiraki. The Monastiraki flea market is a dreamland for travelers since it is full of tourist memorabilia and leather accessories that carry the Greek signature.

A great advantage of this place is also that, unlike most markets in Greece, it remains open on Sundays as well.

For trifles, souvenir shops , leather goods,  and bohemian accessories, the central market of Monastiraki cannot be beaten. What’s more, within the area, you can find the antique market of Avissinias square .

There, genuine vintage treasures at incredible prices await for you to discover. The variety of the antique market is truly outstanding, extending from shops selling jewelry and records to decoration and furniture!

The neighborhood of Kolonaki

shopping tourism greece

If you are a fan of luxury, then the district of  Kolonaki , located in  the center of Athens , along with the famous Voukourestiou St ., will without a doubt meet and surpass your expectations with their out-of-this-world creations.

Along the whole length of Voukourestiou St., you can shop at the world's biggest fashion houses, with  Prada, Gucci, and Cartier being only a few of the luxury brands you're going to come across.

Whether you are looking for something simple or something more sophisticated, something from the 50s or something of the glorious 80s, Preloved will provide it. In this underground shop, you will find everything: Hermes, Marc Jacobs, Chanel, Dior, Louis Vuitton, Stella McCartney, Gucci, and Prada , second-hand, but in superb condition.

Vintage shopping in Exarcheia

shopping tourism greece

If vintage shopping is your thing, look no further than the municipal of Exarcheia. In this artistic neighborhood, vintage and second-hand shops will make vintage enthusiasts revel in the choices.

Yesterday’s bread , with its hilarious name, is one of the most popular vintage shops in Athens. In its tiny space, you can find unlimited bags, accessories, shoes, coats, shirts, jackets, dresses, and jeans at very good prices (2-90 €), mainly from Amsterdam and Paris.

Despite the shop being so small, you might find yourself devoting a lot of time to searching through a large variety of stock.

Skoros and Execute Fashion , in close proximity to one another, are also some of the most prestigious second-hand shops in Athens, located on one of the city's most vibrant streets.

Skoros means 'clothes moth'; you have to admit that when it comes to naming their second-hand shops, Greeks don't lose their humor! In any case, one thing is for sure: there is no way that you won’t find something that tickles your fancy among the many interesting offers!

Aiolou and St.Markou Street

shopping tourism greece

If you're on a budget but still want to treat yourself to some retail therapy, in  Aiolou and Agiou Markou Str. , located near the historic center, you will find a number of vendors with a wide variety of budget-friendly products.

Those streets have been favored by the locals for decades and the love is still strong, judging by the sheer number of people that visit them daily.

From shoes, bags, clothes, and accessories to furniture and homeware, the streets of Aiolou and Agiou Markou won't disappoint you! Even if you don't find anything to buy, you can mingle with an enthusiastic crowd of locals, which will give you an insight into true Greek culture!

Athens malls

shopping tourism greece

Another effective way to do your shopping without having to wander around the whole of Athens is to visit a mall. Shopping malls are in fact a relatively new discovery for Greeks as they came to be in Athens only a few years ago. The first and largest mall is The Mall Athens , located at Maroussi, with Athens Heart , Athens Metro Mall, and Attica following.

Malls provide convenience and comfort while potentially protecting you from the unbearable heat in the summer and chilling cold in the winter. You can find most things you're looking for in the same well-kept place and you can also stop for a coffee, a bite, or a drink.

Go for the classics!

Apart from the rich historical background, Athens' city centre is popular among both visitors and locals for the vast array of shopping choices. Begin your shopping stroll from the island-like area of  Plaka .

Walking under the pink leaves of bougainvillea, you will find some hidden gems and specialty shops between coffee shops and restaurants and get the opportunity to explore original Greek and Byzantine jewelry, second-hand books,  Greek boutiques , and traditional food shops.

Walk your way through the paved laneways of Monastiraki in central Athens ,  where visitors and locals flock to buy traditional  Greek souvenirs ; dig out quirky antiques, real-leather products, handmade bags, jewelry, and baubles- you want it? You've got it!

Keep on roaming and make your way to  Psirri , where you will find a variety of shops alongside local eateries; you can buy quaint worry beads - the famous Greek “ kompoloi ” – from many souvenirs shops and the renowned handmade sandals by the  Poet-Sandalmaker .

Get off the beaten track and slip into the small Nika Street; if you love stringed musical instruments, there you can find a small shop with handmade  Greek instruments , such as bouzouki and baglamas. When leaving  Psirri , don’t forget to invest in some natural soaps and beauty products made with organic  Greek ingredients .  You won’t regret it!

Enjoy a foodies’ paradise!

When it comes to food shopping, Athens is undeniably a foodie’s paradise. Whether you look for local products or distinctive  Greek flavors , this is the place for you! Go back to  Psirri  and discover local food shops that offer the miracles of Greek nature n your plate.

Step in the 'Pantopoleio… Peri Lesvou' and admire all kinds of goodies the island of Lesvos has to offer, from delicious cheese to ouzo. Shop for smoked meat, sausages, soutzouki, and pastourma in 'Aapian', a shop that has been standing tall in the heart of Athens since 1922. Carrying on with your food quest in Psirri, you will find all sorts of places that sell an unlimited variety of  Greek spices and herbs .

Luxury shopping in Athens

For those of you who are fans of unique Greek designers or just enjoy luxury window shopping, the neighborhood of  Kolonaki  is the place to go for a more high-end shopping experience.

Go wander around the streets of the expensive district, discover unique boutiques hosting creations of famous Greek designers like ' Favela ,' and indulge in pure elegance, sophistication, and style.

If you are more of an artistic type, you can also explore popular contemporary art by visiting the numerous art galleries of Kolonaki; culture and fashion make the best couple!

Moving on to the North Suburbs,  Kifisia  offers a more extravagant lifestyle; you can wallow in the aesthetic fashion of vintage and modern clothes, one-off accessories, and high-quality shoes that are geared toward high society clients.

A few kilometers north of Athens, one will find the municipality of Chalandri , close to Marousi and The Mall Athens, with one of the most beautiful markets in the northern suburbs.

Offering a wide variety of local shops, one can wander around the pedestrian streets of Chalandri, combining shopping with coffee and snacks in a beautiful urban landscape.

Our favorite shop there is the bookshop  Evripidis , which is cultural heaven on earth for all the bookworms out there, with nothing short of impressive stationery and book selection, both Greek and foreign.

shooping in athens 3

Evripidis offers, at the same time, the comfort of a modern bookshop and the intimacy and warm environment of a cozy coffee shop.

Two tasteful coffee rooms, one in the bookshop on the 1st floor and the other in the courtyard, offer sweet and savory delicacies, putting a literal twist on the expression ' food for thought .'

Athens offers, among many things, the opportunity for great shopping no matter your taste or budget. What better way to explore a new city,  discover her streets, and take in the local vibe than indulging in a little retail therapy?

Whether you’re looking for something for yourself or your loved ones, the city is full of independent stores and much-loved high-street brands, providing plenty of hours' worth of browsing. The shopaholics amongst you will not be disappointed.

What's more, if you head to the southern part of Athens, the best place for high-end shopping is  Glyfada ; although the area is known for its nightlife and restaurants, you can find a vast array of unique shops for shopping as well.

Not to sound like a broken record, but when visiting Athens, you should focus on buying as many local products as you can physically fit in your suitcase.

From local olive oil, wine, traditional spirits, and sweets to olive oil soap,  Greek fashion brands of clothes and jewelry, and a pair of leather sandals from Monastiraki Flea Market, ask the locals for their favorite Greek products and go out to buy them!

Is Athens good for shopping?

Athens is excellent for shopping, boasting a lot of commercial streets in every neighborhood, ideal for satisfying all of your capitalist tendencies.

While it has a number of high-fashion boutiques that are untouchable to middle-class budgets, Athens cannot be described as 'expensive.'

8 Best Places To Shop In Athens, According To A Local

shopping tourism greece

  • Activities and Interests
  • Destinations

During my tenure living in Athens, one thing I’ve learned is that, whilst this city’s ancient sites are magnificent, Athens offers so much more. Many visitors come to Athens to visit the Acropolis or simply head straight to the islands. Incomparable to Los Angeles or Milan in terms of shopping, don’t underestimate the shopping experiences to be had on a visit to Athens. Make some time to fit in a spot of retail therapy into your vacation.

Here, I share with you some of the best places to shop in Athens and what you can expect to find in each place.

1. Monastiraki

Flea market of athens.

Let’s start with one of the most famous places in Athens — Monastiraki Square and its adjoining flea market. The square itself is rich in culture and history with Neoclassical buildings and the mosque of Tzistarakis Aga, a symbol of the city’s Ottoman rule.

If you’re looking for tourist memorabilia — anything from the ubiquitous leather sandals, postcards, fridge magnets, or olives to take home — this is the place to come.

But it’s the flea market held on Sundays that makes Monastiraki well worth a visit.

Vendors gather early in Avissinias Square, just a few feet from the main square, and sell any paraphernalia that will leave you wondering if it’s worth buying — from broken doll heads to drachma coins. It’s a veritable treasure chest.

Pro Tip: Go early on Sunday if you can. Even if you don’t buy anything, it’s interesting to get a taste of Greek life as locals sit around playing tavli (Greek backgammon). Plus, Avissinias Square, less touristy than Monastiraki, has some lovely coffee shops to rest up.

Customers and vendors at Varvakios Agora in Athens, Greece.

2. Varvakios Agora

The central market where locals come for fish and meat.

Built in 1886, this mix of traditional shops, food stalls, and coffee specialists all infuse their aromas under one covered roof to give visitors a unique local experience.

Divided into sections, expect to see meat, fresh seasonal fruit and vegetables, dairy products with plenty of cheese and eggs, and, of course, the Greek specialty of fish. Varvakios Agora hosts nearly 100 fish stalls making it one of the largest fish markets in Europe.

Locals, greengrocers, and restaurateurs come here to purchase produce for their various eateries and shops. Even if it’s unlikely you’ll buy anything yourself, come and immerse yourself in daily life. For those with strong stomachs, try out the magiritsa soup served in the cafes within. A Greek delicacy usually served at Easter, it can be bought from the Central Market, but be warned — it consists of the insides of a lamb!

Pro Tips: If you’re quite sensitive, maybe skip the meat section with its large slabs of meat hanging from hooks. It’s like being in a huge butcher shop. Head to the colorful fruit and vegetable section instead. And go early. Since it’s enclosed, the spring and summer months can get hot.

Interior of a shop on Evripidou Street in Athens, Greece.

3. Evripidou Street

The spice and deli hub of the city.

The foodie in you will love Evripidou Street. Running just beyond the Central Market, it’s awash with colors and aromas from family-run businesses that have been around since the 1940s selling herbs, spices, sacks of dried tea, and nuts. It’s reputed to have over 2,500 shops, making it a favorite for many famous Greek chefs.

It’s here you’ll also find some popular delicatessens/charcuteries. These places are Instagram-worthy with their various meats and counters offering a variety of colorful cold cuts. Popular haunts include Miran , established in 1922, offering a little known patio through the back where you can order your staple at the main counter then sit and enjoy. Opposite is the more popular Ta Karamanlidika tou Fani ; more of a meze restaurant offering a variety of meats, cheeses, beers, and wines.

Pro Tip: Walk farther down Evripidou and you’ll see the neighborhood becomes a cultural melting pot, interspersing Asian and Middle Eastern shops, not to mention a smattering of small barbers.

Aiolou Street in the early morning, Athens, Greece.

4. Aiolou Street In The Historic Center

Great for last-minute necessities.

The Monastiraki flea market, Varvakios Agora, and Evripidou Street are known for their markets, delis, and spice stalls respectively. Nearby Aiolou Street is the place to head if you’re on the lookout for hiking trousers, shorts, in fact, any manner of everyday clothing, and even furniture — all at very friendly prices. It’s a veritable treasure trove. Many visitors to Athens have been pointed towards the vendors in their little shops here to purchase last-minute necessities. Maybe you’re in need of a bigger suitcase if you’ve been on a mass spending spree and need to take back more than what you came with, or you simply forgot to pack a useful item.

Pro Tip: Aiolou Street runs from Monastiraki Square to the Omonia district of the city. Other than offering cheap items, there’s not much to see here except the occasional commissioned and beautiful street murals on some buildings as the street reaches Varvakios Agora. It’s worth a wander down this street just to see these for yourself.

Pedestrians aplenty on Ermou Street in Athens, Greece.

5. Ermou Pedestrianized Street

One of athens’s longest and busiest shopping streets.

You’ll find anything and everything on Ermou Street — the nearly mile-long pedestrianized thoroughfare running from Syntagma/Parliament Square down to Monastiraki. Here, you’ll find high-end street clothing and athletic brands, cosmetics such as Mac and Sephora, plus independent shops interspersed in between. Among department stores such as the Greek Hondos Center and Marks and Spencer , you’re bound to find anything you want for your vacation and to take home. Ermou Street remains one of Athens’s most popular shopping strips for both locals and tourists alike.

Its name, of course, has a Greek mythological link. Ermou is derived from Hermes, the Greek God and protector of traders. Take a stroll down, window shop, and stop at a food stall for a koulouri snack — a Greek sesame bread ring.

Pro Tip: Make time to stop and visit the Church of Panagia Kapnikarea, one of the oldest Byzantine temples in the city. Located roughly halfway down Ermou Street, King Otto originally planned to demolish it. The temple was saved, however, by an intervention from the King of Bavaria. It now belongs to the University of Athens and makes for an interesting cultural stop during your retail jaunt.

6. Kolonaki

Where prada and gucci meet preloved luxury.

If your budget is no object and luxury goods are your preference, it’s the main square of Kolonaki and surrounding streets you’ll want to head to. One of the richest neighborhoods in Athens because of its proximity to Syntagma/Parliament Square and nearby Mount Lycabettus, residents of Kolonaki range from politicians to “old” money.

It’s the area of the biggest fashion houses such as Cartier, Gucci, Prada, and ever-emerging Greek designers. This is also where you’ll find the many cafes and coffee houses that the various sections of Greek society frequent — political heavyweights, literati, and those brokering a business deal.

Mixed in amongst these are several art galleries and museums such as the Museum of Greek Culture — part of the Benaki collection — and the newly-opened National Gallery on the main artery road of Vasileos Konstantinou. A great neighborhood to shop for high-end clothes, relax among the well-heeled and combine your time with a museum visit.

Pro Tip: Kolonaki also offers several “preloved” — second hand to you and me — luxury clothing at more affordable prices. Look out for shops such as Second Hand Lux ; whereas Brand Stories caters to handbag aficionados. Kolonaki is the place to come for luxury cast-offs.

A street in the Exarchia District in Athens, Greece.

7. Exarchia District

Eclectic vintage style.

Take a walk east of Kolonaki and you’ll reach the renowned Exarchia neighborhood. Referred to as the “dodgier side of town,” Exarchia has perhaps been unfairly labeled. It’s a great student district, but students in Greece have been affiliated with demonstrations, especially during the financial crisis era. Don’t be put off by the booted riot police that seem to frequent every corner of this neighborhood, discouraging large gatherings. Exarchia has many cafes, bars, and shops to choose from and soak up the atmosphere.

It’s here you’ll find most of the city’s vintage shops. Whereas Kolonaki has luxury preloved, its students’ creative energy and edginess are reflected in the vintage stores in Exarchia. Kimonos, ‘80s anoraks, and outdoor clothing abound in Yesterday’s Bread . Hotsy Totsy offers jeans, trousers, dresses, and Hawaiian shirts. Whereas — although not second hand — Mimis is the place to come for handmade Greek sunglasses at excellent prices.

Pro Tip: I suggest combining a shopping outing with both Kolonaki and Exarchia as each slowly bleeds into the other.

Golden Hall in Athens, Greece.

8. Shopping Malls

Everything under one air-conditioned roof.

Great for those hot summer or chilly winter days, you may be surprised to learn that this ancient city has a handful of shopping malls with a variety of shops, restaurants, and cafes. Some even have large movie complexes, always showing films in their native language with Greek subtitles.

Mostly located just outside of the city center, The Mall Athens was the first to open in the northern suburb of Maroussi in 2005. It remains the largest.

Maroussi seems to be a favorite for shopping malls. In 2008, Golden Hall opened its doors in the same suburb. Here, you’ll find more high-end and mainstream retailers such as American Eagle, DKNY, and Gap, plus the usual plethora of restaurants and fast food/coffee outlets.

Head down to the coast of the southern suburb of Agios Dimitrios and you’ll find Athens Metro Mall . Conveniently, it’s right by the metro station of the same name. Over 90 stores among four levels, the usual cine-complex, food outlets, and a supermarket await.

Enjoy your vacation to Athens , interspersed with a spot of shopping.

Exploring Retail Wonders in Greece

Shopping in greece.

Shopping in the Greek islands is a delightful venture, particularly when engaging with local artisans. In quaint villages, skilled craftsmen, including embroiderers and lacemakers, showcase their talents, offering a unique glimpse into traditional trades. While these handmade treasures contribute significantly to the local economy, it's worth noting that most non-local goods are imported, rendering them slightly pricier.

Discovering the vibrant pulse of Greek towns is made even more exciting by stumbling upon their weekly street markets, known as 'laiki agora.' Bursting with a kaleidoscope of fresh produce, herbs, seafood, meats, and more, these markets offer the best value for your money. Operating on different days in larger towns, the markets wrap up by early afternoon, leaving ample time for the cherished Greek siesta. Prices here are generally friendlier than those in supermarkets, and a bit of haggling is often expected.

FOOD AND DRINK

Indulge your senses in the culinary treasures of the Greek islands, with highlights like luscious honey, flavorful pistachios, succulent olives, aromatic herbs, and exotic spices. Treat your palate to the delights of salty feta and sweet anthotyro from Crete , complemented by an array of pastries and biscuits from the renowned zacharoplasteio . The islands also boast a rich tradition of wines and spirits, featuring brandy, ouzo, resinated retsina wine, and the potent Cretan specialty, raki.

SHOPPING IN GREECE

UNVEILING GREEK TREASURES

While traditional handcrafts may not be budget-friendly, they stand as the epitome of authentic Greek souvenirs. From exquisite gold replicas of ancient Minoan pendants to rustic pots, wooden spoons, and handcrafted leather sandals, the options are diverse. Particularly, the leatherwork in Chania , Crete , is a noteworthy attraction. Villages throughout the islands showcase brightly colored embroidery (kentia) and wallhangings, representing family businesses that thrive during the summer months. Bargaining is often welcomed in these charming locales.

Icons are predominantly available in shops and monasteries, ranging from small portraits to larger, meticulously crafted compositions. The use of traditional techniques adds a timeless and valuable touch to these beautiful creations.

SHOPPING IN GREECE

Gold jewelry takes center stage in larger towns, with museum gift shops offering reproductions of ancient designs.

Exquisite utensils , like hand-carved wooden spoons, are treasures found in traditional craft shops, often crafted from the textured wood of native olive trees.

Komboloi , or worry beads, make for a common and soothing sight in Greece , available in souvenir shops.

SHOPPING IN GREECE

Kitchenware is abundant in most markets and specialized stores, with coffee pots being particularly popular items.

Leather goods grace every corner of Greece , offering practical and enduring souvenirs in the form of bags, backpacks, and sandals.

SHOPPING IN GREECE

Artistic ceramics present themselves in various shapes and finishes. Traditional pottery, characterized by simplicity, functionality, and an unglazed charm, is a common find on the outskirts of Athens and the larger towns scattered across the islands.

Shopping in Greece

Shopping in Greece is a popular activity, attracting fashion enthusiasts from around the world. Greece is renowned for its exceptional fur coats, but you'll also find high-quality leather goods, clothing, and shoes at reasonable prices.

While in Greece, consider purchasing high-quality gold jewelry adorned with semi-precious and precious stones. Local cosmetics crafted from olive oil and natural ingredients are also a favorite among tourists.

Don't miss out on delectable Greek food items like feta cheese, honey, olives, and olive oil. And, of course, you can't leave Greece without bringing back some wine - your friends won't forgive you if you do. Additionally, you can find a variety of religious items in the church shops here.

A popular shopping destination in Greece is Kastoria, known for its exquisite Greek furs and leather goods. The ideal time to visit Kastoria is during July or August when Greece's summer sale season is at its peak.

Surprisingly, fur coats are more affordable during the summer sales than even during the winter sales. However, for other items, you can confidently shop in any Greek city during the winter sale season, which typically starts in January and lasts for a full month.

A nother day another market to visit in Athens. Visiting flea markets in every city that I go to is one of my favorite activities!

Luckily for me, Athens has some of the best markets I have seen and they are my go-to place for shopping. All flea markets have something special, maybe it is how vibrant the sellers are, the place that they are located in or the fact that they have become something of a ritual for weekly shopping. In any case, they are unique, they are colourful, they are beautiful and they are unforgettable for those that visit them! So, here comes a list of the must-visit markets in Athens; read it wisely and plan accordingly.

Thissio Flea Market in Athens

When you step out of the metro station in Thissio, the first thing you see, are countless small benches with hundreds of items upon them. Located in one of the most central and most visited spots of the capital, this market extends all over the pedestrian area of Thissio, starting from the metro station and going all the way up Apostolou Pavlou street. The hours depend on the season and on the day of the week. What can you shop for there? Antique items, amazing leather bags, unique handmade jewellery (which are the most numerous and if I can say so, the attraction for most of us) and gorgeous decorative stuff. A walk through the market is perfectly combined with a visit to the Thissio historic area, or a stop at one of the cafes or restaurants under the Acropolis and around Andrianou street. The centre of Athens is easily explored on foot and there are many monuments to discover when walking around.

Monastiraki Flea Market in Athens

Located in one of the most central parts of Athens, this one is hard to avoid! Although it is not technically a flea market, it has the essence of one. The street is called Ifaistou and here you can find literally everything. My personal favourite thing is handmade sandals and leather bags, which you can find in every size or style. Most of the sandals are designed in the ancient Greek style and you can even watch some of them being made on the spot, by local artisans. What could be a better souvenir to remember Greece by?

Apart from the above, you will find stores with, clothes (also in the ancient Greek style), stalls with antiques, ice-cream shops and street merchants selling books and paintings. A huge variety of cafés and restaurants are also scattered around the area. So, if ever you find yourself in Monastiraki, walk around its colourfull markets and get your souvenirs!

Laiki agora in Kallidromiou street

One of the best experiences, in order to live the Greek shopping reality, is to get yourself to a ‘laiki agora’. The term is translated in English as a farmer’s market. That is the place that we do our weekly fruits and vegetables’ shopping at. Every neighborhood has its own, where producers from nearby places go to sell their goods. The prices and the quality are much better than the food in the supermarket. If you want to taste the local products, which is highly recommended especially during the summer, go to a laiki agora. I suggest the one in Kallidromiou street in Exarcheia. The neighborhood has a troubled background and the countless graffiti adds to the urban vibe. Here you will find everything that you are searching for; nuts, herbs, fruits (dry and fresh), vegetables and household goods. Do your shopping in this flea market and you will have an unforgettable experience. Plus, in Exarcheia you can find really good restaurants and cafes!

Piraeus Flea Market

Every Sunday, behind the metro station, Piraeus flea market is open from (really!) early morning till late in the afternoon. The style might remind you of a bazaar in the Middle East; bargaining is totally acceptable and the crowd is huge (you might need to push someone to walk through!). What can you find there? Everything your heart desires! Clothes, books, household items, tools, electrical devices, cooking equipment, and even furniture! Before hopping on the ferry to your island holiday (Piraeus is the port of Athens ) wander around this market.

Avissinias square

A small square next to Ifaistou street in the Monastiraki area. During the weekends, an antique flea market occupies this square and extends from Ermou street all the way to the Thissio metro station. In this one you can find every antique item that you can think of; furniture, coins (the old Greek coin before euro, the ‘drachma’), vinyl records, jewelry, books, ornaments, etc. As you may remember by now, this neighborhood has plenty of options for food and drinks.

This is the main central market of Athens and a place that attracts both locals and tourists. Varvakeios is a meat fish and fresh produce market, open from Monday to Saturday from early morning till late in the evening. This is not the place for those unaccustomed to strong smells or the sight of suspended meat carcasses. Wearing closed shoes comes heavily recommended. People come here for their weekly shopping from all parts of Athens. The produce is fresh, the options countless (but most will have their favourite and most trusted stalls) and the atmosphere is hectic but lively. The rhythm of the everyday people of Athens can be observed here by anyone who wanders inside the bustling alleys. A small taverna called Epirus , operates inside the market that is famous for serving some of the best tripe soup in Athens. Do explore!

Even though it is not a typical flea market, the edge of this beautiful part of Athens has plenty of small boutiques which may be the best place to do your souvenir purchasing. Small, stylish stores, in which you can search for your perfect gift, are hidden in the tiny alleys. Art items and handmade painted postcards can be found along with clothes (a lot of which have the ancient Greek cut), shoes, bags, and jewels.

Schisto Flea Market

This time we go out of Athens. In Schisto, a suburb in the west of the capital, every Sunday morning, people from all over Athens and other cities too, gather in this enormous flea market. By enormous, I mean that some of the items on sale include second-hand cars and motorbikes, animals for farms (e.g. chickens), carpets, tools, and of course the most common clothes. A 3 km line of counters is spread next to the highway. Among all this stuff, quite often some collectors find rare treasures. In Schisto Flea Market (Pazari Sxistou) , bargaining is not only acceptable, but the usual way to complete a purchase. So, if you are heading on a road trip , make the stop and give yourself this experience! Last but not least, many wandering food sellers camp out every Sunday in Schisto, to provide the hungry crowds with street food .

Evripidou Street Market

A street in the heart of the city, with some really old and historical shops like Mpachar and Chatzigeorgiou. The main merchandise is everything that gets dried! Greek herbs like tea, chamomile, linden tea, mint and dry fruits such as mango, pineapple, raspberries, blueberries, dates, plums and raisins. Try something that comes from Mt Olympus or Taigetos! Another specialty to try is dairy products. In order to taste the traditional feta and kasseri cheese from Greek producers, pass by the grocery stores. Finally, if you want to experiment a little bit, try the salted fish like hake and herring.

Piraeus Central Market

Another version of Varvakeios for those who live in the southern suburbs. If you find yourself in the south of Athens and in need of some fresh food, do not hesitate to pay a visit to this market. In the port area of Piraeus, on Gounari street, the city’s central market offers a compilation of commodities from local producers. You can also find some imported goods. After having done your shopping, wander around and find yourself a small taverna (Greek restaurant). In this area, there are a lot of traditional ones; an ideal stop for a meze (Greek appetizer).

  • These are just some of the markets in Athens we recommend you stop by during your next visit! Any other hidden gems you recommend?

The Best Shopping in Greece

  • Traditional Arts & Crafts: So many places in Greece pride themselves on their needlework that it is hard to single out even a few, but among those few would be Crete, Rhodes, and Skyros. Two places in Athens deserve mention: The Center of Hellenic Tradition (59 Mitropoleos and 36 Pandrossou) and the National Welfare Organization (6 Ipatias and Apollonos). The center offers ceramics, woodcarvings, prints -- and one of the finest views of the Acropolis in Athens. The National Welfare Organization contains hand-loomed rugs and silk embroidery done by village women, as well as excellent copper work and ceramics.
  • Jewelry: It now seems that half of Greece's retail stores sell jewelry, so shop around. Much of it is really no different than what can be found in cities all over the world, but Athens does have major, internationally known jewelers such as LALAoUNIS and Zolotas. Try Chania, Crete, and Ioannina, northwest Greece, for sophisticated local artisans' work. Islands such as Hydra, Mykonos, Paros, Santorini, Skiathos, and Rhodes have scores of stores appealing to the tourist trade, many with the work of local jewelers.
  • Rugs/Weavings: Crete probably offers the largest variety of rugs and weavings. Metsovo has some distinctive textiles. If you like rag rugs, look for kourouloudes on sale at small shops as you travel the Peloponnese.
  • Wood: Corfu seems to be the center of olive-wood products -- carving boards, bowls, and utensils. Rethymnon, Crete, also has a selection. In the Peloponnese, woodcarvings and utensils are often found in the villages of Arcadia. The islands of Paros, Syros, Chios, and Mitilini also boast wood-carving traditions.
  • Icons, Ecclesiastical Books & Religious Items: On the streets around the Greek Orthodox Cathedral (Metropolitan) in Athens, you'll find many shops selling votive offerings, candles, and reproductions of icons. In Thessaloniki, Apostolic Diakonta Bookstore has a wide selection of religious items. Many of the most important religious shrines, such as Panagia Evangelistria on Tinos, and many convents and monasteries, including most of the Meteora monasteries, sell reproductions of icons and other religious items. On Crete, the Petrakis couple in Elounda paints internationally sought traditional icons.
  • Natural Products: In the last few years, Greece has begun to produce organic and natural products, including olive oil, honey, jams, and cosmetics. Keep an eye out for food products with the Peloponnese, Gaea, Milelia, Nefeli, Yiam, and Stater labels in groceries and delis.

1. Ermou Street

View this post on Instagram A post shared by Grecia nel cuore (@grecianelcuore)

Ermou Street connects Syntagma Square with Monastiraki. The street is one of the five most expensive shopping streets in Europe and was recently ranked 10th among the world's most expensive shopping streets.

It is also home to the famous shopping center Attica, The Department Store, which is said to be the Harrods of Athens. Porsche, Prada, Guess, Armani, Burberry, Hermes, Salvatore Ferragamo, Cartier, Brooks Brothers, Kalogirou, Links of London, Philipp Plein, Under Armour and Replay as well as Escada are just some of the famous brands that can be found here. In total, over 850 brands are offered here, spread over 8 floors. The café-restaurant on the top floor offers a breathtaking view over the city .

In the middle of Ermou Street is the 11th century Kapnikarea Church , built on the remains of an ancient temple.

  • How to get there: Ermou Street can be easily reached by the red metro line 2 and the blue line 3, Syntagma stop or by the green line 1 and the blue line 3 via Monastiraki stop.

2. Mitropoleos Street

View this post on Instagram A post shared by louisa_elkhoury_abboud (@louisa_elkhoury_abboud)

Starting from Syntagma Square, Mitropoleos Street runs parallel to Ermou Street. Although not as famous as its famous neighbor, Mitropoleos Street also offers numerous shopping opportunities.

Here stores with shoes and handbags line up , many small Greek boutiques are waiting for visitors.

For those who don't like the crowds on Ermou Street, this parallel street is a good alternative.

  • How to get there: You can reach Mitropoleos Street easily with the red metro line 2 and with the blue line 3, stop Syntagma.

3. Monastiraki

View this post on Instagram A post shared by Dimitris Tsioulis (@dimitris.tsioulis)

Monastiraki takes its name from the 10th century church, which is located right next to the metro station of the same name. Monastiraki is p art of the historic old town of Athens and was the business center of the city for centuries.

The area is known for its many quaint, small stores and boutiques, where many a bargain can be found. Merchandise ranges from clothing and vinyl to accessories, paintings, costume jewelry and jewels.

This is also the area where you can buy leather goods, fur coats, vests , and related accessories all year round.

Especially famous is the flea market of Monastiraki , which, unlike other flea markets, is open every day. If you are interested in Greek musical instruments and would like to have a bouzouki as a souvenir, you will certainly find what you are looking for here.

If you want to combine shopping with sightseeing , this is the place to be. The historic  Hadrian's Library  and the former Tzistarakis Mosque from the 18th century are located directly on the square, with the Acropolis in the background.

Plaka is the oldest district of Athens, at the foot of the Acropolis. Here you can find souvenirs in many small stores. In addition, there are all kinds of tourist souvenirs.

Many of the houses here stand on old walls that date back to ancient times. The facades of the pastel-colored houses are mostly from the 18th century and are overgrown by colorful bougainvillea in summer. Until the modern urban planning of the 19th century, Plaka was the center of the city. After that, Plaka gradually developed into the taverna district it presents itself as today.

The winding streets with the old cobblestones convey a  romantic flair, music sounds on the sidewalks, in some taverns Sirtaki is danced. Due to its proximity to the Acropolis , a visit to Plaka is also a good idea after sightseeing, and if you feel like it, you can simply go to a tavern after shopping.

  • How to get there: Plaka is located between the metro stations Acropolis and Monastiraki and can be easily reached by the green metro line 1 and the blue line 3, stop Monastiraki. The red line 2 goes to the Acropolis stop.

The best things to buy in Greece include food, drink, decorations, instruments, games, clothing items and lots more! Here’s everything you need to know about the best souvenirs from Greece, written by a local.

Souvenirs in Greece

The best Greek souvenirs

Most people fall in love with Greece! Our unique ancient sites, pristine beaches, delicious Greek food and relaxed pace of life are some of the reasons why people visit Greece again and again.

Souvenirs from Greece

A question I often get from visitors is what to buy in Greece. People look for unique gifts from Greece to take back home for their friends, or as souvenirs from their trip.

In this article, I have included 26 of the things I’d bring back from Greece if I was a tourist myself. Includes fantastic food gifts, memorable objects and a couple of tacky souvenirs, just for fun. Enjoy!

1. Feta cheese

Feta is the most best known cheese of Greece. Its soft, crumbly texture and its unique taste make it very popular for Greeks and visitors alike.

Feta is a fantastic souvenir from Greece

If your country’s regulations allow it, I totally suggest bringing back a packet of real Greek feta. Yes, it’s possible that you can get some type of feta in your country, but it just won’t be the same!

Feta is available in every single supermarket in Greece. You can also get sealed packets at the airport, on your way home.

2. Greek honey

Honey is considered to be one of the best superfoods. It’s been used for thousands of years not only as a food, but also in traditional medicine, due to its antibacterial and anti-inflammatory properties.

Greece produces several types of honey. A few examples are thyme honey, Greek pine / fir oney, wild oak honey, chestnut honey, arbutus honey and heather honey.

Greek raw honey is a great gift to take home

In Athens, you can find good quality honey at delis, street markets, and the Varvakios food market . Moreover, you will easily be able to find local honey in every single Greek island .

Just make sure you are allowed to take it back home. As an example, you can’t bring honey to Australia.

3. Olives and olive oil

Olives and olive oil have been a huge part of Greek culture and Greek tradition since the ancient years.

You may have heard the story about goddess Athena who offered an olive tree to the city of Athens, and became the city’s patron goddess. If not, here’s how Athens took its name .

Olive oil is widely used in Greek cooking, and is liberally added in salads and dips.

Ancient olive tree in Greece

Extra virgin olive oil is a very important ingredient in the famous Mediterranean diet. It is rich in antioxidants, and is linked to a lower incidence of cardiovascular disease. Have a look at this recent piece of medical research .

Olive oil is produced from olives, which grow on olive trees. The olives are picked from the trees and then crushed, resulting in the precious oil.

Olives can also be eaten, however pay attention – you can’t eat them straight from the tree, as they are very bitter! They are first cured in brine for a few weeks, and they are then ready to eat. The best known variation are the black Kalamata olives.

Greek olives are a great present from Greece

You can easily find Greek olive oil and all sorts of green and black olives in food markets and supermarkets all around Greece. Also, check out for olive paste, a tasty spread made out of olives.

4. Raisins, sultanas and currants

Another popular Greek superfood are raisins, sultanas and currants. Sold in Greece under one name, “ stafides “, those tiny dried grapes are rich in antioxidants, fibre, iron and potassium.

It’s easy to find stafides everywhere, including open-air markets, supermarkets, the central market and small shops.

5. Greek coffee

Coffee is a very popular beverage in Greece, and a huge part of the Greek lifestyle.

While cold and iced coffee are very common, especially in summer, there is another type that you need to taste: Greek coffee. It is very typical in Greece, Turkey and a few other nearby countries.

Buy a packet of Greek coffee as a souvenir from Greece

The ground coffee beans are boiled with water in a special pot, called briki . The drink is then poured into a small cup. You need to be careful not to drink the thick sediment at the bottom of the cup 🙂

Bags of Greek coffee along with demitasse cup sets are among the best souvenirs from Greece.

Side note: If you are going to both Greece and Turkey, I would suggest that you get your coffee and cups in Turkey. Note that, while the coffee is called “Greek coffee” in Greece, it’s obviously called “Turkish coffee” in Turkey.

Here’s some more information on coffee in Greece and the Greek coffee culture .

6. Greek ouzo and raki

Ask anyone who has been to Greece, and they are likely to remember one drink: Ouzo . A bottle of the iconic anise flavoured aperitif is one of the best gifts from Greece.

Another popular alcoholic beverage in Greece is raki , or tsipouro , which is somewhat similar to Italian grappa. It has a high alcohol content, and can also be simmered with honey and cinammon to produce a warm drink, rakomelo .

Bottles of Greek raki are great gifts

You can easily get Ouzo and raki everywhere, including airports. I recommend an Ouzo brand called Plomari, produced in a family owned distillery.

Here is some more information on Greek drinks .

7. Mastiha products

Another Greek superfood is mastiha . People have been using it for medicinal purposes since the times of Ancient Greece. It’s a natural way to treat digestive issues and other conditions of the gastrointestinal system.

Mastiha is a natural resinous substance with a distinctive flavour, somehow similar to vanilla. It is collected from the mastiha shrubs, which grow exclusively in Chios island. You can see what they look like in this video .

The most common products containing this precious ingredient are mastiha chewing gums and mastiha liqueur. You can also find mastiha -flavoured coffee, chocolate, halva, and many more treats.

Among all Greek souvenirs, this is one of the most unique ones. You can find mastiha products in dedicated shops, including a signature store at the Athens International Airport.

8. Greek herbs and mountain tea

Hundreds of different herbs grow in Greece. Even on the driest of islands, like the Cyclades , you can see several types of shrubs and bushes.

Thyme, oregano and rosemary are among the most common herbs in Greece. Most of them are collected, dried, and are then ready to be used in the preparation of Greek food .

Apart from the herbs, you can find several types of herbal teas, like linden, sage, chamomile or verbena. These are available either in the form of loose leaves, or in sachets.

The most popular Greek tea is what we call “ tsai tou vounou “, which translates to “mountain tea”. The actual plant is called Sideritis (ironwort). You will easily find bags including the stems, leaves and flowers of the plant.

Greek tea sideritis is a wonderful souvenir

For a special treat, look out for krokos , or saffron, from the area of Kozani.

My favourite place to get herbs and herbal teas is the Varvakios food market. I warmly recommend a store called 1,001 Gefsis , on Athinas street.

9. Greek sweets and sweet treats

Any of your friends with a sweet tooth will definitely appreciate a box of Greek sweets.

Some of the best known desserts you can take nack home include baklava and halva . Baklava is made out of filo pastry, nuts and a thick syrup, while the main ingredients in halva are tahini and sugar.

Famous Greek baklava

Another popular snack is pasteli , made out of sesame seeds and honey or sugar. There is a crunchy and a soft version, and they are often seasoned with cinnamon, cloves or even mastiha .

Spoon sweets, or glyko tou koutaliou , are also fairly popular. They are produced after boiling pieces of fruit in a thick, sugary syrup and sold in jars.

Apart from these, you can buy cakes, cookies and many other sweet treats at most bakeries in Greece. Here is a long list of the best Greek desserts !

If you are spending Christmas in Greece , look out for kourambiedes and melomakarona , some very special cookies that you won’t find at other times of the year.

Tip: If you have a sweet tooth, it’s worth spending a few days in Thessaloniki , where you’ll find some excellent patisseries and some of the best pastries in Greece !

10. Handmade leather sandals

Leather sandals are among the best Greek souvenirs. They are flat, light sandals made out of leather and a rubber sole. They come in various designs and colors, though they are more common in light brown.

Greek leather sandals are excellent presents

Watch any movie inspired by ancient Greek mythology , and you will notice that ancient Greeks wore similar sandals. (In reality, more types of shoes existed back then, just like today’s closed shoes or boots).

You can easily find Greek leather sandals in souvenir shops in Plaka area and Monastiraki markets in Athens. A famous, family owned business with good quality handmade leather sandals is Melissinos .

You can also buy leather sandals in tourist shops on most Greek islands, like Mykonos or Santorini . In case you aren’t traveling to Greece any time soon, you can also get them on Amazon !

Or you can opt for those traditional Greek pom-pom shoes. They are kind of similar to what the Guards are wearing during the Changing of the Guards .

Traditional Greek shoes are a colourful souvenir

Note: Contrary to popular belief, Greek leather sandals are not the best shoes to wear in Greece, as their soles are rather thin and your feet will hurt on our cobblestone streets. Check out my article with tips on what to pack for Greece , including footwear – I love my Teva Sandals .

11. Greek backgammon board

Backgammon might be the oldest board game in the world. It was originally invented in Mesopotamia, in the 2nd or 3d millennium BC.

The game and its variations were popular all over the ancient world, including Egypt, Persia, Ancient Greece and the Roman Empire.

Backgammon Greek souvenir

Today, backgammon, or tavli as we call it, remains popular not only in Greece, but also in many nearby countries. It’s a rather addictive game, and requires skill combined with some luck.

Backgammon boards are easily available around Monastiraki market in Athens. The standard size is rather bulky, but could even fit in your hand luggage.

Depending on quality, a backgammon board price ranges widely. You can spend anywhere from about 10-15 euro, to several hundreds of euro for backgammon boards made out of olive wood or leather.

12. Worry beads

Worry beads, or komboloi , is made out of an odd number of beads around a piece of string. It is a small Greek souvenir, which makes it easy to bring back home.

Popular Greek souvenir komboloi

Even 100, or 50 years ago, it was rather common for older men to play with a komboloi . Today, you will rarely see people holding on to them – they are used mainly as decoration in Greek houses.

Worry beads can be made out of bakelite, resin, amber, ebony, bone, coral, olive wood, and many more natural materials.

You can find cheap komboloi at most souvenir stores. If you are looking for something more valuable, check out Kombologadiko store in Athens and Mykonos .

13. Greek jewelry

A great souvenir from Greece is jewelry, and you will find a fantastic selection. From inexpensive wristbands, to silver rings and pendants to top quality gold jewellery, Greece has got you covered.

A shop with Greek jewelry

If you are interested in buying affordable, original designs in Athens, wander around Plaka, Thisseio and Monastiraki flea market. You will find dozens of stalls where local artists display their creations.

Two local jewelry stores I personally love are Hyperion and AlexisP , both in Plaka. Their designs are unique and totally affordable, and they are also really nice people!

For more luxurious jewelry, check out some of the long-established brands, like Zolotas, Lalaounis and Vildiridi. I also warmly recommend Skaras Jewels , for their lovely designs and incredible professionalism!

14. A charm to keep away the evil eye in Greek culture

The evil eye is a superstitious belief in curse. It is supposed to be caused by someone looking at the affected person, and can be given inadvertently.

The concept of the evil eye has been around for thousands of years. You may have seen drawings of eyes on Ancient Greek pottery, a symbol of apotropaic magic.

Greek evil eye souvenirs

Today, the evil eye is common around countries of the Mediterranean and the Middle East, as well as in Africa and Asia, and it is similar to the Egyptian Eye of Horus . Even the Greek Orthodox church accepts the existence of this type of curse.

To protect someone from the evil spirits and bad luck, it is customary to give them a special talisman. We call it “ matohantro “, which comes from the words we use in Greece for eye ( mati) and bead ( hantra ).

Evil eye charms are unique gifts to take back home

These lucky charms resemble the shape of an eye, and they are usually blue. These days, there are many objects with this pattern, including tea towels, cushions, bags and cups.

You can find them in most souvenir stores all around Greece. For something slightly more subtle, you can also buy jewelry with eye-shaped beads.

I was surprised to see that there’s a wide selection of evil eye beads, bracelets and T-shirts on Amazon ! Have a look.

If you want to read further into this, here is some exciting information about the evil eye and its origins .

15. Handmade ceramics

Pottery has always been a big thing in Greece. Ancient Greek ceramics are exhibited in many of the best museums in Athens and all around the world.

Colourful Greek ceramics are popular presents

Anywhere you go in Greece, you will find ceramics. Apart from mass-produced, colorful bowls and cups, you will also find beautiful hand painted ceramics created by local artists.

Some of the islands, like Sifnos, have a long-standing pottery tradition. Alternatively, you can get ceramics in the flea markets in Athens and in some museum gift shops. They are great – though slightly tricky to travel with – souvenirs of Greece.

16. Deck of cards with scenes from Greek mythology

A really fun and unique Greek souvenir is a deck of cards with scenes influenced by our mythology.

They are typically decorated with some of the 12 Olympian gods , prominent heroes like Heracles or Prometheus, and other popular figures that you’d normally see on pottery items.

Ancient Greek pottery

Now before you buy those for your young nephews or grandma’s friends, check them carefully. The cards often depict erotic scenes, which are probably not what you want to gift to everyone.

You will find these decks of cards everywhere around Monastiraki and Plaka.

17. A phallically shaped bottle-opener

If the decks of cards are not funny enough for your close friends, there’s another naughty Greek souvenir you can get for them. And this is none other than a wooden bottle opener with a phallic shape.

Greek bottle openers make funky souvenirs

Whether these are popular souvenirs or not, I am not sure. But you can easily find them at the flea markets and tourist shops. Now, whether you want to keep them in your hand luggage when you are flying home, is another matter 🙂

Fun fact: They come in various colours and sizes, so you can choose the one that you like best.

A bit of trivia: In Ancient Greece, the phallus symbolized fertility and prosperity. Apart from that, it protected people, as well as cities, from evil powers. You can often find phallic symbols in museums, and you will also see them on the walls in Ancient Delos .

18. A Greek bouzouki or other musical instrument

If you have musician friends, a great idea for a gift is a Greek musical instrument. The most famous is the bouzouki , a string instrument that looks like a lute or a mandolin.

The Greek bouzouki hails from Asia Minor. It became popular in Greece during the rise of the forbidden rebetika music, in the first half of the 20th century.

A bouzouki instrument is a very special gift from Greece

Counting the neck, a normal bouzouki measures around one metre long. If it’s hard to carry, you can look out for other traditional instruments. A tzouras or a baglamas look like a small-scale bouzouki  and will be easier to bring back home.

There are a few stores around Plaka and Monastiraki specializing in making instruments. Alternatively, check out musical instrument stores like Nakas , Stollas and Adagio .

Or you can talk to these guys , who are a lot more than just a bouzouki shop.

19. CDs with Greek music

Some people would argue that CDs are almost useless in the days of YouTube and Spotify. However, you can’t always find the songs you are looking for, and a CD is always a great gift for every music lover out there.

You will easily find CDs of some of our most prominent musicians and composers in all music stores in Athens.

Just a few examples you could research before your trip: Hatzidakis, Theodorakis, Savvopoulos, Agelakas, Delivorias, Dalaras, Mitsias, Tournas, Tsitsanis, Farantouri, Galani, Protopsalti, Arvanitaki, Vissi, Alexiou.

Let me know if you have any other favourites in the comments!

20. Natural soaps and cosmetics

Remember how olive oil, honey and mastiha have been used for medicinal purposes since forever? It shouldn’t come as a surprise that they are also used in natural soaps and cosmetics.

Olive oil soap from Greece is a great souvenir

If you are familiar with argan oil, you could say that olive oil is its Greek version. When in Greece, you will find plenty of olive oil beauty products, such as hand creams, facial moisturizers and hair conditioners.

Other widely used ingredients include yoghurt, chestnut, propolis, pine and saffron.

Two brands you can look out for are Korres and Apivita . You will find many more brands in most tourist stores, cosmetics stores like Hondos Center, and most pharmacies.

21. Football or basketball T-shirts

Football and basketball T-shirts are always a great gift for children and teenagers (and not only). If his popularity in Greece is anything to go by, a shirt with Giannis Antetokounmpo’s name is all the rage right now.

For football T-shirts, check out the official stores of Olympiakos , Panathinaikos and AEK . You can also find sports shirts around Monastiraki and Plaka.

22. Religious icons

Religious icons will definitely appeal to any Greek Orthodox friends and family. Iconography is still a pretty popular profession over here.

A religious icon from Greece makes a great present

What I find unique is that this form of art goes back to the Byzantine years. The figures, which are carved on a wooden frame, are austere and colorful. Bright colours like red, green silver and gold are widely used.

You can find great quality icons in stores in central Athens. Religious destinations such as the Meteora monasteries or the fantastic Greek island of Tinos also offer a wide variety of icons.

23. Greek carpets and rugs

Noone can deny that synthetic materials have taken over our world. Today, it’s a lot easier to buy a carpet made out of polyester, than look for a woolen or silk one.

If, however, you are looking for traditional carpets and rugs, you will find many different types in Greece. The traditional, heavy woolen flokati rugs, or the thick, woolen kilimia will add character to your living room or bedroom.

The Loom , on Adrianou street Plaka, is a good place to start your search for Greek and international rugs and other homeware.

24. A replica of an ancient Greek statue

A replica of an ancient Greek statue is a gift that will appeal to many people. You can find statuettes made out of different materials, including clay, resin, alabaster or bronze.

Ancient Greek statue replicas are a unique Greek souvenir

Popular figures include Aphrodite of Milos , Nike of Samothrace, goddess Athina and god Apollo. I also find the Cycladic figurines very pretty, and these colourful versions I saw in Naxos were quite cool.

Original Greek souvenirs

While you can find replicas in most souvenir shops, I also suggest you check out the museum gift shops.

25. Ancient Greek helmet and full body armour

If the statue replicas don’t quite cut it, no worries. Hardcore Ancient Greece fans can find a lot more than that.

Helmets - the best souvenir for Ancient Greece fans

As an example, you could consider bringing back an ancient Greek helmet. While they probably wouldn’t be effective in case of battle, they would suit a living room with an Ancient Greece theme.

Greek souvenirs - Full body armour

And if the helmet still isn’t enough, why not go for the ultimate souvenir from Greece, a full body armour!

26. An ancient Greek Playmobil!

I would have never thought that an ancient Greek Playmobil exists, until I saw it somewhere in Plaka. This is probably one of the best souvenirs in Greece for kids.

A present from Greece for kids - Playmobil figurines

Playmobil figures of Ancient Greeks are part of the “Playmobil History” series. You will find gods and heroes like Zeus, Hercules, Achilles, Patroclus, Ulysses, Hera, Athena, Artemis and many more.

There’s even the Palace on Mt Olympus ! And I’m sure that if you look hard enough you’ll find Playmobil figurines participating in the Ancient Olympic Games !

What is Greece famous for souvenirs?

Some of the most famous Greek souvenirs are ouzo, leather sandals, worry beads, and anything related to olive trees.

I enjoyed reading what you wrote. I will be coming to Athen’s in June for a 7 day cruise I wanted to come 3 days ahead to sitesee but with the Covid testing I couldn’t find a place to take the test

Hi! You can take a rapid test at most pharmacies in Greece – here’s an article that might help. By June, hopefully these restrictions will be lifted – you can have a look at this article a few days before you arrive, as I update it every week. Enjoy your holiday!

Thank you for writing this article. It helped me 🙂

I’m very glad to hear this!! Enjoy your time!

Great article !! Lots of stuff I never would of thought about buying.

Thank you!! 🙂

Love reading your articles. I collect Nativities. Are there some unique ones for Greece? We are coming to visit in February.

Hi – could you please email me at [email protected] with some photos of nativities you already have so I can get an idea? Thanks!

Please note a warning for US travelers buying food or any agricultural products to take back to the US: The Customs and Border Protection agents work in coordination with the US Department of Agriculture to STOP all agricultural imports into the US! No herbs, honey, cheeses, and other fresh products are allowed into the country. The agents use K-9, trained dogs, to locate such products in passengers luggage.

For sure, every traveller needs to know their country’s regulations regarding food and other goods. I’ve highlighted this in the article.

This is simply not true. All of the products you listed ARE most certainly allowed into the United States. We bring honey, feta cheese, fresh mountain tea, and it is all absolutely permitted per the US Customs and Border Patrol website. Of course it is important for every traveler to do their research, as certain rules apply (I.e. cheeses with meat in them; such as cheeses with pieces of bacon, are not allowed).

Thanks for your comment Holly – this will be useful to other people living in the US! Do these regulations change from time to time?

Do you have a complete site map anywhere online? I keep discovering more and more wonderful pages and topics just at random (while in the middle of reading another lovely post) and it makes me wonder what else I am missing! I’d love to see a table of contents! Thanks for compiling all this great info – your site is a gold mine!

Hi Molly – I’m afraid it’s not user-friendly but here it is! https://realgreekexperiences.com/post-sitemap.xml

Are your streets and beaches safe to walk alone. How is crime when visiting Athens and surrounding areas?

I do find them safe overall, perhaps with the exception of a few neighbourhoods in Athens. Be careful in crowded areas as well as the metro, pickpockets do operate and they target tourists.

This Gorgeous Region in Greece Is Where the Greeks Go on Vacation — With Magical Blue Water, Friendly Villages, and Local Food

Take the ultimate road trip unveiling Greece’s best kept secrets.

Thessaloniki

Sithonia peninsula, mount athos.

Sucheta Rawal/Travel + Leisure

If you feel outpriced for a vacation in the Greek Islands, you're not entirely out of luck — there’s a lesser-known alternative to experiencing the same magical blue waters, friendly village vibe, and fresh Greek food.

Greek-Macedonia, the country's northern region, offers a broader variety of experiences for history buffs, beach lovers, and road-trippers, and still has an ancient history that compares to Athens, dramatic coastlines similar to the Greek Isles, some of the most extensive spans of green olive groves in the world, and the country’s most spiritual sites — all within a few miles from each other.

Northern Greece is also easier and more affordable to navigate independently than elsewhere in the country. Rent a car or hop on a public bus; stay at a beachfront bungalow, a village guesthouse, or camp at a beach or inside a forested national park.

With milder climates, fewer crowds, and great prices (including many free attractions), it is no surprise that this is where the Greeks themselves prefer to go for their summer breaks and long weekends.

Top 5 Can’t Miss

  • Grab a drink, listen to live music, enjoy the nightlife, and people-watch in the vibrant Ladadika district of Thessaloniki.
  • Visit King Phillip II’s gleaming royal tomb, complete with delicate artifacts, discovered in the lost city of Aigai after 2,000 years.
  • Take a day cruise to the Athos Peninsula and admire the remote architecture of 1,000-year-old monasteries. The autonomous region is considered the spiritual center of Orthodox Greeks and is not easily accessible to travelers.
  • Book a dinner at Hierion Restaurant at Athena Pallas Resort. You will feel like a Byzantine emperor as you taste a medieval menu with Mt. Athos paired wines inside a space replicating a portico of a Byzantine monastery.
  • Take a scenic drive from the mountain town of Litochoro through winding roads overlooking the sea and mountains into Mt. Olympus National Park.

Sucheta Rawal/Travel + Leisure

Start your trip in Thessaloniki — Greece’s second largest city and trade junction, with a major airport and seaport along the Thermaic Gulf of the Aegean Sea. Named a UNESCO City of Gastronomy, Thessaloniki is where some of Greece’s best chefs experiment with traditional flavors and modern cooking techniques. Locals, known as Hellenes, will tell you this is where the Greek coffee culture originated. A common sight is friends and families lingering for hours at al fresco coffee shops, discussing everything from world affairs to office gossip over cigarettes and bitter coffee.

Visitors often overlook the modern European economic hub, but it offers many historical sites, quality restaurants, bustling nightlife, and plenty of shopping at a fraction of the prices compared to other well-known parts of Greece. The city’s extensive makeup of working professionals and university students provides a nonstop street party atmosphere. It is common to find otherwise quiet neighborhood streets and abandoned buildings transformed into temporary live music venues (without the high-priced cover charges) thumping beats until after midnight. Stay away from the crowds at the artfully-decorated Elisabeth Boutique Hotel , located in a historic building.

It's easy to explore the 2,300-year-old city on foot, uncovering layers of Roman, Byzantine, and Ottoman history, especially around Ano Poli, the upper town. Among 15 Byzantine UNESCO monuments in the area, you can visit the catacombs at the Baptistery of St. John the Baptist near the sixth-century Hagia Sophia, the seventh-century Church of Hagios Demetrios, Aristotelous Square, the Archaeological Museum, Byzantine Museum, and White Tower Museum. In the evening, walk along Aristotelous Square and the bustling waterfront, where it feels as though the entire city is out running, walking, watching street performances, and enjoying happy hours around the lively areas.

For dinner, there are hundreds of traditional Greek, international, and even vegan restaurants along the narrow alleys of Old Town and Ladadika districts. Try Frutti de Mare for seafood, Roots for vegan Mediterranean, and Oval Bistronomy for modern Greek with a view of the tower.

Drive about 45 miles west from Thessaloniki to Vergina to see one of the best-preserved moments in archeological history. From the outside, the grassy mound may not look like much, but once you go underground, your eyes will adjust to the bright gold objects stored in a dark and cool museum.

Here, you can see a glorious, shiny tomb of King Philip II, father of Alexander the Great, who died in 336 BC. The Museum of the Royal Tombs of Aigai, constructed by the Kingdom of Macedon at Aigai, was only identified in 1977, and the museum was completed in 1997. Inside, you can see silver and bronze vessels, carved ivory, gold armor, delicate jewelry, weapons, shields, and the king’s bones in the Golden Larnax. Entry tickets are half-price between November and March.

To continue on the trail of Alexander the Great, you can also visit nearby Polycentric Museum of Aigai in the restored part of Macedon’s  Royal Palace , which, in its day, was three times bigger than the  Parthenon .

Head further south to the region of Pieria, a quaint weekend mountain escape outside the big city of Thessaloniki. Many Greeks, Bulgarians, Serbians, and Albanians drive to the area for active adventures, fresh air, and quiet retreats. Litochoro is a charming 14th-century traditional village at the foothills of the mythical Mount Olympus, offering stunning views of the sea and the mountains.

Stroll around the cobblestone streets, and you will find adorable Macedonian-style houses decorated with rose, olive, and fig trees, rustic stone chapels, and a dozen tourist shops selling local wine, honey, herbs, and traditional sweets. A romantic dinner for two, including a bottle of Greek wine at one of the nicer restaurants — Hairi Green and Μεζέ Μεζέ — costs less than $30. Join local residents at one of the many taverna and ouzo bars to watch a game and spark a conversation.

Take the scenic 30-minute route from Litochoro village to Olympus National Park, the first national park in Greece established in 1938. Windy roads will bring you through 11,000 acres of alpine vegetation, including oak, black pine, beech, and white pine, to a monastery in Mount Olympus's heart. Visit the open-air Monastery of St. Dionysios, destroyed during World War II, and take a short hike along the icy Enippeas River to the holy caves.

Mount Olympus is a sacred place for Greeks and a UNESCO Biosphere Reserve for its diversity of flora and fauna. You can book a day-long guided hiking, mountain climbing, or canyoning tour, or for a more leisurely pace, take the trail from the village to see the spanning gorge and Enipeas waterfalls.

In the afternoon, drive a few minutes south of Litochoro to the beach town of Plaka, where you can take a relaxing swim in the glistening blue waters, have drinks and snacks at an old train tunnel transformed into Galleria Café, or take in panoramic views from the Castle of Platamon.

Head east of Thessaloniki toward three legs of the Halkidi peninsula. Each has a different vibe, focusing on hiking, beaches, and religion. The middle — and the largest peninsula in northern Greece — is Sithonia, which resembles the Greek Isles without the whitewash. Instead, you will find red terracotta rooftops, quiet hamlets, and expansive hills filled with Cyprus and olive trees. Greek vacationers prefer to sprawl around laidback villages dotted with 100 or so Blue Flag-recognized Aegean beaches boasting milder climates and pristine beaches. In Vourvourou, teenagers and families rent small self-piloted boats and move the day-long party to the crystal clear water.

As you circumvent the 26-mile-long panoramic drive along the coastline, stop at ancient settlements, olive-tasting rooms, and beachside cafes. Make time for the old village of Nikiti, Neos Marmaras, the ancient ruins of Toroni castle, and the village and beach of Agios Nikolaos. Climb to the top of Mount Itamos for a coffee and panoramic peninsula views. Sithonia is dotted with affordable Greek restaurants where you can drink tsipouro and eat fresh-caught seafood with your feet still in the sand.

Catering to all types of travelers, the Sithonia Peninsula offers accommodations for as low as $50 per night, ranging from campgrounds and apartments to beachfront villas and luxury resorts. To experience part of the Byzantine era, stay at the family-owned and operated Athena Pallas Resort , where the food and architecture are inspired by Mt. Athos monasteries. Taste different aspects of Greek culinary history at one of the onsite restaurants and get access to the famous Elia beach.

Mount Athos is the third peninsula of Halkidiki, also known as the Vatican of Greece. There are 12 fully autonomous 1,000-year-old Byzantine monasteries currently operational on the peninsula. While the holy mountain is visible from many spots in Greek Macedonia, it is not easily accessible. Male pilgrims must apply for limited permits to enter the sacred Mount Athos region, while women are not allowed to enter.

From the water, anyone can enjoy the pristine natural beauty and grandeur of the monasteries' architecture. Drive to the village of Ouranoupolis and embark on a three-hour cruise with Athos Sea Cruises to sail along the peninsula. From your boat, you can see many of the Monasteries of Mount Athos, with their large campus and remote locations nestled amidst the lush mountains.

Prior to the opening, those looking to fly to the area had to travel to a nearby airport and then be transported to the city of Tulum.

"Yes, Tulum may well be one of the most Instagrammed spots in Mexico, with plenty of smoothie stands and yoga retreats," said Tripadvisor about the location, "but this Riviera Maya beach town is so much more than a photo-op."

Greece’s Tourist Guides Up in Arms Over Latest Tourism Bill

shopping tourism greece

Tourist guides protest in Athens against a Ministry of Tourism new bill of law proposed these days on public consultation. Photo source: FEG Tourist Guides

Certified tourist guides in Greece are calling on Tourism Minister Olga Kefalogianni to withdraw a tourism bill currently up for discussion , arguing that the terms threaten the profession are “catastrophic” .

The  Panhellenic Tourist Guide Federation (POXEN) , which also has the support of the European Federation of Tourist Guide Associations (FEG) , held a protest in front of the Acropolis Museum requesting that Law 710/1977 be enforced. Other protests were held on Santorini , Crete and in Thessaloniki .

According to POXEN and FEG, the ministry’s proposed legislation aims to change the definition of the term “tourist guide” so that others offering such services without certification enter the market. The change, the associations claim, will deregulating the profession.

Under the new law, certified guides would see their role limited to specific sites such as monuments and museums, thus opening the door to “ unqualified individuals from anywhere in the world”, the associations argue.

POXEN and FEG go on to note that for decades, Greek tourist guides have provided comprehensive services, offering information about the nation’s cultural and natural heritage , modern life, history , traditions , and gastronomy . The current law (710/77) , they say, is aligned with EU standards , ensuring that guides are well-trained and qualified . The new bill, however, threatens to ‘weaken’ these standards , potentially damaging the country’s reputation.

POXEN stresses that the current “tourist guide” definition is sufficient and compliant with EU regulation . POXEN and FEG have called on the government to reconsider the proposed changes. FEG President Efi Kalampoukidou underlines the need for consultation with POXEN before any changes are made.

The associations are calling for the withdrawal of the bill , requesting a meeting with Kefalogianni, and threatening further protests if changes are not made.

The author using the LYMA Laser

Summer vacation season is heating up, and this tiny but mighty skincare tool might be the next best thing to traveling with your own personal dermatologist.

Billed as “the world’s most powerful at-home beauty device,” the FDA-cleared LYMA Laser uses low-level laser therapy (LLLT) to reach the deepest layers of the skin, triggering cell regeneration and addressing redness, pigmentation, scars, blemishes and signs of aging like fine lines and wrinkles along the way.

“It’s not like traditional lasers that are used to heat up tissue to stimulate collagen production,” LYMA founder Lucy Goff previously told The Post of the tech.

“It’s not damaging any cells whatsoever. Fundamentally, what you’re doing is switching on more and more cells that naturally died off as part of the aging process.”

LYMA Laser

Because it’s completely painless and calls for zero downtime, you might assume this buzzy gadget’s all gas — but since its 2022 launch, the LYMA Laser has become a favorite of celebrities and Hollywood facialists like Joanna Czech, who used it to prep her clients for this year’s Met Gala .

Superstar makeup artist Pati Dubroff, who works with A-listers like Margot Robbie and Sofia Richie, has even dubbed it “the breakthrough beauty device of the decade,” raving, “I use it on clients’ skin before makeup and it massively reduces inflammation, erases under-eye bags and gives the face a fabulous glow.”

The only downsides? In addition to being quite the investment at $2,695, this high-tech handheld tool requires a considerable time commitment; LYMA recommends using it for at least 15 minutes per day for 90 days at first, after which you can move into “maintenance mode” and use it two to three times each week.

View this post on Instagram A post shared by LYMA (@lymalife)

I’m still well within that initial 90-day window, which means I need to squeeze in daily sessions with my LYMA Laser.

Fortunately, it’s roughly the size, shape and weight of a small flashlight, making it perfectly portable and easy to slip into any backpack or carry-on when it’s time to travel. (I recently brought mine along for a long weekend in Boston, and used it while unwinding at my hotel with a little Netflix at the end of each day.)

While the brand recommends using the LYMA Oxygen Mist and Glide included in its Starter Kit to prep the skin before use, you can also incorporate the skincare products of your choice. I’ve been subbing in my favorite serum and moisturizer, and they seem to be doing the trick.

Open suitcase

Once your complexion’s all lubed up, simply glide the LYMA Laser over your skin in slow, steady movements until you’ve covered the entirety of your face, neck and chest; you can even use it on the backs of your hands and any body scars you’d like to treat.

For any areas of particular concern (stubborn lines, pigmentation, texture, etc.), I like to hold the device in place for three minutes for a more targeted treatment, as recommended by the helpful tutorials on LYMA’s website .

I was initially drawn to the at-home laser in hopes that it might smooth the texture of some residual acne scarring on my cheeks, and while I’ll need to continue my regimen beyond a couple of weeks to see those kinds of results, I’ve already noticed a slight reduction in redness since starting, which is encouraging.

Before and after skincare photos

And The Post’s Holly Coley, who’s been using her LYMA for months , tells me she’s obsessed with the tool.

“I started using the LYMA Laser in January and it has been a consistent part of my routine since,” she tells me. “I won’t lie, it’s a time commitment. However, I’ve seen an improvement in my skin’s laxity and texture, which makes the effort worth it for me. I’ve also seen improvement with my neck lines, which is impressive. I love the cordless design and the fact I don’t need to charge it often.”

As with any skincare routine, consistency is key — and I’m excited to continue using the LYMA Laser, no matter where this summer takes me.
