A love letter to The National at the start of its world tour

chicago national tour run time

If you are looking for a review, this isn’t it. This is an appreciation for a band that helped one of your best friends get through his divorce by listening to “Boxer” on repeat; a band whose music made your new city feel like home; a band whose songs helped you through one of the toughest times in your own life.

On Thursday, The National launched its tour with a four-night run at the Auditorium Theatre in Chicago, opening with the quiet and gorgeous “Once Upon a Poolside” from its newest and ninth album “First Two Pages of Frankenstein.” You still saw the playful and charismatic lead singer Matt Berninger joking with the band, a powerful performance of "England" and a set that felt loose and comfortable, like you were just invited over to listen. But 20 years after they first hit the road, The National felt like it had grown up.

You don’t go see The National for stage theatrics or choreography, though you will enjoy the mesmerizing grainy video accompanying the show and Berninger’s dance moves that remind you he is a writer.

You go see The National because you love the band. If BTS has its Army, The National has its “sad dads,” a nod to its middle-aged band members and melancholy songs about angst and loss. And there were plenty of middle-aged men in their “Sad Dad” sweatshirts before the show, lining up to buy more band merch, but if you think that the grown-up hipster is the band’s only fanbase, you missed almost half the people at the show.

You go because even though you’ve seen The National play to much bigger crowds, and you know guitarist/writer/ frequent Taylor Swift collaborator Aaron Dessner played an acoustic version of “The Great War” in front of 66,000 people on her tour in Tampa , the band is at its best in a smaller venue. The Auditorium holds about 3,800 people.

Need a break? Play the USA TODAY Daily Crossword Puzzle.

You go because even though you heard a rumor that the band would play in its hometown of Cincinnati – and now your home – sometime this fall, you didn’t want to wait.

See photos from The National's Tour opener on its Instagram account

You go because Berninger is equally good with the lyrical “About Today” as he is at screaming “Graceless.”

You go because they make you feel young again. The band, who met in Cincinnati, formed in Brooklyn in the late 1990s. Now they feel like grown-up hipsters and you, too, have grown up, even if you were never hip. After 20 songs, the crowd still feels energetic and excited on its feet as they cheer for an encore just before 10 p.m., but most of them sit down for it, perhaps realizing we still need to get up for work tomorrow.

You go because while you had liked the band for almost a decade, you didn’t see them live until your second summer in Cincinnati, a place where I had moved with my then husband and four kids. That July night, before The National came on stage during the Bunbury Music Festival, a storm rolled and rain came down so hard, I thought they’d never play. Everyone was soaked.

And then there on the banks of the Ohio River, along with that friend who credits “Boxer” with surviving his divorce and his then new girlfriend, the skies cleared, the band took the stage. And somewhere between “Bloodbuzz Ohio” and “Mr. November,” I felt like I was home.

You go because these five guys, including two sets of brothers (Bryan and Scott Devendorf, Bryce and Aaron Dessner, and Berninger), have stayed together for two decades, through marriages, moves, and eight children. You go because somehow reading about Berninger’s depression in a beautiful piece in The New Yorker and the struggle to create the newest album is inspiring in the way you feel when you see people get through difficult things.

You go because three years ago you were writing a memoir about the hardest time in your life, including your mom’s suicide, and somehow listening to The National each night as you wrote, helped you hit your publisher’s deadline. “It takes an ocean not to break,” lyric from “Terrible Love” became a sort of mantra, and somehow writing about the worst part of your life helped make you better.

You go because sometimes you need to experience art to be inspired, because work is both exciting and complicated and maybe even weird right now, and life can feel heavy even in the best of times.

You go because you learned during the pandemic that there is nothing like hearing your favorite band with people who love them as much as you do. You go because hearing the songs that you wrote a book listening to, songs that helped your friend through the hardest of times, remind you of how much art matters. And that music can inspire and change you, too.

Highly Recommended Theater: CHICAGO (National Tour at San Diego Civic Theatre)

Post image for Highly Recommended Theater: CHICAGO (National Tour at San Diego Civic Theatre)

MY KIND OF SHOW, CHICAGO IS

Coming to the San Diego Civic Theatre  is the National Tour of the 1996 revival of Chicago , now the longest-running revival in Broadway history, and the second longest running musical behind Phantom of the Opera . But it’s a short run, February 13-18, 2024 , so don’t say I didn’t give you fair warning. Presented by Broadway San Diego , Chicago is a must-see for any musical lover. And if you’re not a musical lover, this show will make you one. It is entertaining as hell, and you will be treated to camp, jazz licks, belting solos, a great band, and sexy dancers. So, go spend an evening and experience what Broadway is very good at. John Kander and Fred Ebb’s songs remain the catchiest score ever written. And the famous moves of director/choreographer Bob Fosse (who co-authored the book with Ebb for the 1975 original), remain in the revival, thanks to Ann Reinking ‘s re-creation of the Vaudeville-style numbers.

chicago national tour run time

One of the wonderful things about period pieces is that they rarely feel dated. Chicago , taking the audience back to 1926, feels just as fresh today as it did when it debuted on Broadway in June of 1975. But its history dates back much further.

chicago national tour run time

In the mid-20s, reporter Maurine Dallas covered a series of high-profile murders that had taken place in Chicago with a unique twist: All had been committed by women and most were acquitted by the all-male juries of the time. The public couldn’t seem to get enough of the coverage, which gave Dallas the idea that this could make a strong basis for a play. She chose two defendants, Beulah Annan and Belva Gaertner, as being two of the most interesting and created her play, Chicago, with a plot that weaved the two of them together, with the fictional names Roxie Hart and Velma Kelly, respectively. Her idea worked; it played 172 performances on Broadway in 1926 (a huge run at that time) and led to two film adaptations in 1926 and 1942.

The play found its way into the hands of actress/dancer Gwen Verdon in the 1960s and she saw the possibility of a musicalization. She brought it to husband Bob Fosse who approached Dallas, who refused repeatedly. Fortunately for theaterlovers, after her death in 1969, her heirs were less protective of the material and struck a deal with Fosse, who brought in Ebb to collaborate.

The story centers on Roxie Hart (played by Verdon originally, with Reinking in the revival), who murders her lover when he tries to end the affair. She convinces her dupe of a husband, Amos, that he was a burglar who tried to take advantage of her and Amos takes the blame, protecting her honor. Due to a flaw in her story, Amos sees through the ruse and turns on his wife, leading to her being jailed. There, she meets an interesting set of atypically-powerful women, including Velma (originally played by Chita Rivera; Bebe Neuwirth in the revival), who is also accused of mariticide. Velma is used to having a certain amount of clout in the jail but Roxie cuts into that and the sparks that are Chicago begin to fly. An interesting side note is that Velma’s role was originally intended to be smaller, but when Rivera got the part, they wanted to make more of having such a celebrity in the cast.

With great songs like “All That Jazz,” “Cell Block Tango,” and “When You’re Good To Mama,” audiences fell for the dastardly duo and the show became a Broadway hit, running 937 performances for over two years and being nominated, in 1976, for twelve Tony nominations, losing out in Best Play to mega-hit A Chorus Line . The revival — based on the minimalist presentation by City Center’s Encores! — proved far more successful, its runaway success sparking a greater appreciation of the 1975 original production and renewing stalled interest in the film adaptation , which incorporates the influences of both productions, winning Best Picture in 2002).

Review: MOULIN ROUGE! at Dr. Phillips Center Is Silly But Sumptuous Photo

I can’t recall seeing a single show on the national touring circuit with costumes, lighting, and scenic design as sumptuous as those in Moulin Rouge!. Yes, the show is scaled down from its eye-popping, Tony-winning 2019 Broadway production (still running in New York), but as touring productions go, this one’s exceptionally pleasing to the eye...

Review: MOULIN ROUGE! at the Aronoff Center Photo

Moulin Rouge! is based on the 2001 Baz Luhrmann film of the same name and originally starred Ewan McGregor and Nicole Kidman. Known for its somber tale and use of modern music in a vintage setting, the story and its elements translated extremely well to the stage while also being different enough to appreciate the stage musical in its own right. The updated music for a 2023 audience, a strong cast and crew, and a tale of desperate, devoted love all make this production Moulin Rouge! excel beyond the surface of the fantasy.

Review: MOULIN ROUGE! Is a Thrilling Spectacle Photo

The cast of the musical Moulin Rouge! has a difficult task. The beloved 2001 movie directed by Baz Luhrmann has achieved near-cult status. Its cast included Ewan McGregor, Nicole Kidman, and Jim Broadbent, all at the top of their game. A musical based on a film so iconic has a lot to live up to.

Review: MOULIN ROUGE! at the Eccles Theater is a Euphoric Heart-Filled Extravaganza Photo

The national tour of MOULIN ROUGE! THE MUSICAL at the Eccles Theater is not just “spectacular spectacular”--it is “spectacular” a million times over with dazzling scenic and lighting design that has to be seen to be believed, and even then it feels unbelievable. The entire production is a luscious extravaganza of visuals and music, thanks to the unparalleled artistic vision of Tony-winning director Alex Timbers and his collaborators. But it’s not just shiny veneer with no substance. Lying just under the surface is a pulsating heart of humanity, filled with love and pain and aspiration, driving the experience to euphoric heights.

chicago national tour run time

Chicago , the #1 longest-running American musical in Broadway history, has announced the casting for its upcoming National Tour.

Chicago currently stars Mollie Downes as Roxie Hart, Logan Floyd as Velma Kelly, Sam Hartley as Billy Flynn, Brian Kalinowski as Amos Hart, Nakiya Peterkin as Matron “Mama” Morton and J. Workman as Mary Sunshine. Ensemble includes Alexia Acebo, Michelle Attardo, Aubree Brown, Megan Campbell, Jason Carroll, Adam Flagella, Kelly Gleason, John Guaragna, Nick Gurinsky, Lyman Heung, Kristo Ruffennach, Andrew Natale Ruggieri, Sarah Sigman, Alex Smith, John Tupy and Elizabeth Yanick.

Chicago has everything that makes Broadway great: a universal tale of fame, fortune and all that jazz; one show-stopping song after another; and the most astonishing dancing you’ve ever seen.

Set amidst the razzle-dazzle decadence of the 1920s, Chicago is the story of Roxie Hart, a housewife and nightclub dancer who maliciously murders her on-the-side lover after he threatens to walk out on her. Desperate to avoid conviction, she dupes the public, the media and her rival cellmate, Velma Kelly, by hiring Chicago’s slickest criminal lawyer to transform her malicious crime into a barrage of sensational headlines, the likes of which might just as easily be ripped from today’s tabloids.

The National Tour of Chicago is directed by Tânia Nardini and choreographed by Gary Chryst. Walter Bobbie is the director of the original New York Production and Ann Reinking was the original choreographer in the style of Bob Fosse. Chicago features set design by John Lee Beatty, costume design by William Ivey Long, lighting design by Ken Billington and sound design by Scott Lehrer. The production also features orchestrations by Ralph Burns, supervising music direction by Robert Billig.

Chicago is a production not to be missed. And all the reviewers agree. Time Magazine calls it “A Triumph,” Newsweek raves “Smashing” and Entertainment Weekly sums it up by calling Chicago “Broadway’s Most Electrifying Show.”

The National tour of Chicago previewed in Yakima, WA at The Capitol Theatre before premiering in Spokane, WA at INB Performing Arts Center on February 29th, 2020. Visit www.ChicagoOnTour.com for more information.

The National Perform an Unbelievable Four-Night Run in Chicago to Support their Latest Release

Derek Smith

The National were a band on the brink. By the end of 2019, Aaron Dessner felt like the wheels were falling off. To listen to him describe it, the catalyst seems more attributable to exhaustion than turmoil. Fast forward through the pandemic and Matt Berninger was in the throes of writer’s block. Perhaps the band had run its course? Or perhaps it merely needed the knowledge and experience of difficult times and challenging circumstances to rekindle its creative flame. A Phoenix rising from the ashes or, if The National’s latest album title reflects its own self-awareness, a band rising from the dead.

The First Two Pages of Frankenstein is The National’s ninth studio album and arguably its best collection of songs on any single album.  It’s a soft, airy, and tender album, with largely introspective lyrics that tackle the emotional rollercoaster of life itself. Love and pain.  Melancholy and hope. Time will only tell if it can achieve the acclaim of Boxer, High Violet , and Sleep Well Beast , but there is no mistaking that this latest addition to the band’s discography is a reminder that full-length albums still matter in a digital world that largely focuses on singles.

Although several singles from the album have been released, including “Topic Morning News,” “New Order T-Shirt,” “Eucalyptus,” and “Your Mind is Not Your Friend,” the album is not defined by them. There are no lulls or filler here, but rather a beautifully produced and masterfully executed collection of eleven songs that simultaneously stand on their own yet shine together. The First Two Pages of Frankenstein is also confirmation that The National is not a band whose flame is fading, but rather burning brighter than ever. As evidenced by their recent performances in Chicago, that flame is also hotter than ever.

The band, consisting of Matt Berninger (vocals), Aaron Dessner (guitar, piano, keyboards), Bryce Dessner (guitar, piano, keyboards), Scott Devendorf (bass) and Bryan Devendorf (drums), kicked off their latest tour with four sold out nights at Chicago’s historic Auditorium Theatre. The band’s excitement and energy were palpable, as were those of the wildly enthusiastic crowd.

chicago national tour run time

Over the course of the four nights, the band provided the fans with a steady stream of hits such as “Bloodbuzz Ohio,” “The System Only Dreams in Total Darkness,” “Day I Die,” “England,” “Graceless,” “Fake Empire,” “Mr. November” and “Terrible Love,” as well as approximately six songs each night from nine of the eleven tracks on The First Two Pages of Frankenstein , including “Once Upon A Poolside,” “Eucalyptus,” “New Order T-Shirt,” “This Isn’t Helping,” “Tropic Morning News,” “Alien,” “Grease In Your Hair,” “Ice Machines,” and “Send For Me.” The crowd’s reaction to these new tunes was a true testament to their power and beauty as each one was uniformly embraced and cheered.

The real treat of the shows, however, was the bevy of deep cuts and rarities, such as “Murder Me Rachel,” “Demons” and “Abel” and the surprise of unreleased songs, such as “Turn Off The House,” “Space Invader” and “Deep End.” It was an amazing run, confirming that The National is alive and kicking, with more pages to be written in an already stellar career.

The National’s tour of the U.S. continues through September, concluding with their Homecoming shows in Cincinnati on September 15 and 16, 2023. For more information on those and other shows, click here . To check out The First Two Pages of Frankenstein , click here .

The "Time After Time" singer will headline 23 cities between October 18 and December 5, according to an Instagram post and Live Nation .

Her first major tour in over a decade will start at the Belle Centre in Montreal, make its way to Madison Square Garden and eventually end at the United Center in Chicago.

These five Chicago history tours will show you a different slice of the city

This summer, brush up on your local history with tours that highlight everything from architectural styles to underground critters..

In a city with a history as rich as Chicago’s, summertime doesn’t always have to mean taking a break from learning.

Whether you want to explore outside your neighborhood, fire up your kids’ summer brains or simply try something different, this list presents you with options.

  • The wilds of Chicago: 10 places to bask in nature without leaving home

Head underground … and watch for rats

Why go on a walking tour that openly plugs rats? Because those critters own this city just as much as we do. For proof — and to earn a new appreciation for our fellow citydwellers — sign up for local tour guide Mike McMains’s “ Underground Chicago (Plus Rats!) Tour ”: a 90-minute exploration of the city under the city. Departing from the Mag Mile and quickly descending into the lower regions and underbelly of the city, it’s an educational way to learn something new about Chicago, entertain guests hankering for a tour or simply avoid the hot summer sun. $30, 90 minutes. Next tour is July 6.

The Chicago Workers Cottage Initiative leads informative tours of cottage-heavy neighborhoods such as McKinley Park and Logan Square.

Learn about a seminal architectural style

If you pay any attention to residential buildings in older parts of town, you may be familiar with the typical workers cottage: small, 1 1/2-story homes built for working-class families between the 1880s and 1919. Across the city, there are nearly 60,000 of these homes, but they’re rapidly being demolished. Enter the Chicago Workers Cottage Initiative : a small group of people who organized themselves in 2021 to celebrate these little houses in attempts to preserve them from demolition. During the warmer months, the group occasionally leads informative, intimate tours of workers cottage-heavy neighborhoods such as McKinley Park and Logan Square. Donation, 90 minutes. Weekends.

Dig into the city’s love affair with film

Yes, we know about the Art Institute’s Ferris Bueller’s Day Off tour — but this one’s better. “ From Fairgrounds to Film Set: Chicago’s Midway, Movies, and the 1893 World’s Fair ” starts from the Midway Plaisance, whose ties go back to the World’s Fair, then winds along the tree-lined streets of Hyde Park to showcase five stops tied to the movies. It’s worth your time just to stroll through the leafy University of Chicago campus, and you’ll walk away with a new appreciation for our city’s role in the film industry. $29.99, 75 minutes. Next tour is June 30.
