Wonderful Wildlife

In the evening, you hear the owls cry. In the morning, you see silhouettes of stags in the forests. And by the sea, you can admire thrashing whales and dolphins. Scotland’s Highlands are abundant with wildlife; so it’s a good idea to bring wildlife books and binoculars on your tour.

Curious Castles

Mysteries lie within. Like a hidden passageway. A strange portrait looming above you in a dark hallway. A wall torn to shreds by violence and time. The castles of Scotland display their history proudly. They sigh over their own ruinous state, welcoming your admiration over all they’ve endured.

Heartfelt Hospitality

Quaint and snug cottages. Large and eerie castles. Cosy and traditional pubs. No matter where you go in the Highlands, you’re sure to receive a warm welcome. Highland hospitality is genuine and typically involves a hearty meal shared amongst new and old friends.

Branka's tour with MacBackpackers was absolutely amazing! Her ability to combine Scottish folklore, history, and personal connections made for an entertaining and enlightening tour. We saw amazing sights, heard great stories, and made memories to last a lifetime -- my only regret is not leaving enough time to take the 5-day tour!
Great tour lots of walking day 2 even in the rain it was fantastic. Tim did his best to maximize what we could see and hike his enthusiasm and love for the park were contagious.
The tour started fine; more time in Glasgow would have been better. All we had was a ten-minute bus tour through Glasgow without any information about what was there. At the end of the day, all we got from the tour guide was restaurant suggestions. The travel packet states that we stopped at Loch Ness, but we did not. The tour guide stopped off the road at a parking lot, and we had to walk up a road to look through some bushes and trees and see a partial castle, apparently on Loch Ness. If you were short, you wouldn’t get to see anything. That does not stop at Loch Ness, and the stop at Loch Ness is also listed as a tour highlight for the day, which didn’t happen. There were so many stops we could have made but didn’t. When we stopped at Glenfinnan, the tour guide only talked about the Harry Potter reference, no mention of the Jacobite monument. The tour was constantly filled with Harry Potter references, the guide’s political opinions, and insufficient historical references. No one cares what the tour guide’s political views are; just do your job. Also, at the same stop, it was the only stop with food available, and there was only a little café where several people did not get their orders after they paid, and the tour guide did not care. Some of the people on the tour also missed the monument because the tour guide did not mention it. The Aberdeen Altens Hotel was a complete disaster. The hotel was out in the middle of nowhere. If you didn’t go on the optional excursion, then you were stranded at the hotel with minimal options, such as a pool, where you had to make an appointment to use. It was not available, the hotel had an escape room in the basement which sounds like to beginning of a horror movie, but thankfully it was not open that day, or you could take a taxi where the closet place was a ten minute drive. Still, everything was closed that day, and the taxis don’t drive around the city, so you must remember to take down the number to get back to the hotel. Also, the dinner at this hotel was a disaster; it took over three hours to get through a substandard dinner. The chicken was dry, the potatoes were terrible, the fishcakes were overcooked, and even the dessert was awful. The tour guide didn’t even stay for dinner, and then the following day, she explained that Globus knew about the problem with the amount of time it takes to get dinner and that there was nothing they could do about it. Yes, there is; use a different hotel, location, etc. The fact that this is a known problem and Globus does nothing is despicable. This hotel and location are terrible choices by Globus. The tour of The Royal Yacht Britannia was a waste of time. It seems like it was just a time waster until dinner. Overall, this tour was below satisfactory and not worth the money.

On this tour, you will discover the diverse landscape of the Highlands, enjoy the wonderful coastal scenery, fall in love with the magical Isle of Skye, and, of course, experience an absolute bucket list activity in Scotland, cruise on Loch Ness. After the tour, you will understand why our wee country has been officially voted the most beautiful country in the world!

Day 1 Through the Trossachs to Oban…

We’ll pick you up from Edinburgh’s high street before we make our way to Glasgow – Scotland’s biggest city and industrial capital – where we will meet the rest of your group. Our wide-ranging tour starts by heading west through the beautiful scenery of Loch Lomond and the Trossachs National Park. Loch Lomond is one of the top nature attractions in Scotland, surrounded by beautiful villages and stunning landscapes, it’s an absolute paradise for those who want to experience Scottish nature.

Next, we will stop at Kilmartin Glen, famous for its rich archaeological legacy. With over 5,000 years of history laid out before us, we will walk in the footsteps of the first Scots and decipher the mysteries of an area soaked in history. Take a big step back in time and stroll through Dunadd Hill Fort and the Temple Wood Stone Circle or uncover some extraordinary Neolithic rock art at Achnabreck.

Then, we will have a scenic journey to the picturesque seaside town of Oban, home to Scotland’s best seafood! As we drive through it, your guide will provide you with an overview of the history of the town and its most famous sights. On our first evening, you have the opportunity to take part in a traditional Scottish Ceilidh!

Overnight: Oban

Day 2 Explore the Gruesome history of our Glens…

Day two takes you over the Connel Bridge through Appin to the haunting landscape of Glen Coe (scene of the terrible massacre of the MacDonald Clan). We’ll stop in Fort William; a town dominated by Ben Nevis—the UK’s tallest peak.

We will drive part of the route of one of the most fantastic train journeys in the entire world. We will stop to view the Glenfinnan Viaduct, made famous by the Harry Potter films, and hopefully, get a chance to see the steam train cross it. We will also be able to see Glenfinnan Monument – and the gorgeous scenery that surrounds it!

Overnight: Isle of Skye

Day 3 A whole day to explore Skye…

You’ll have the whole of the third day to explore Skye’s mysteries and landscape with your knowledgeable driver-guide, who will ensure you get the most out of your time on the island based on the weather and group. Stops often include the likes of Cuillin Mountains, Dun Beag Broch, the Black Houses, the Kilt Rock Waterfall, The Old Man of Storr and the Trotternish Peninsula, and of course the capital of the island, Portree. It’s the perfect Scottish experience giving you a chance to visit waterfalls, springs, historic sights and walk through some of the most beautiful landscapes.

Day 4 Beautiful Castles, Mysterious Lochs, and Monster Hunting…

We’ll leave Skye and head straight to one of Scotland’s most photographed castles, Eilean Donan* which you’ll have ample time to explore. Eilean Donan is one of the greatest medieval castles in Scotland. With a history that dates back to the 13th century, this fortress will take you back in time to the bloodiest times of our past.

Our route then takes you over to the pretty Lochside village of Drumnadrochit for lunch. Here, you can choose between navigating the world-famous Loch Ness or enjoying some time to explore the surroundings. Our tour includes a visit to Urquhart Castle and cruise on Loch Ness, an opportunity to catch a glimpse of our famous Loch Ness monster, and immerse yourself in the history of the area. We’ll then head to Inverness, the capital of the Highlands for your overnight stop

Overnight: Inverness

Day 5 Historic Battlefields and the Journey Home…

Today you’ll head to visit the battlefield of Culloden* the site of the defeat of the Jacobite forces. We’ll also have time to explore the nearby Clava Cairns, a group of Prehistoric Burial Cairns – fans of Outlander will love this location due to its similarity to the fictitious stone circle, Craigh na Dun. Then you’ll pass the stunning Cairngorm Mountains. TripAdvisor Traveler Rating According to TripAdvisor travelers as of June 2024

Jump aboard for this classic one day tour to Loch Ness. Travelling through spectacular Highland scenery, this tour is the perfect way to see lots of Scotland and search for the famous Loch Ness monster (occasionally this route may be reversed) .

We begin by travelling past Linlithgow Palace, birthplace of Mary Queen of Scots, towards historic Stirling Castle and the National Wallace Monument.

Your guide will explain the real story of ‘Braveheart’ and William Wallace’s victorious tactics against the English invaders.

Hosb022 Scaled Aspect Ratio 444 310

There’s a brief glimpse of Doune Castle for Monty Python, Game of Thrones and Outlander fans before a morning coffee stop in Loch Lomond and the Trossachs National Park. Our options here include the Highland gateway village of Callander or the mountain views at beautiful Loch Lubnaig.

'Our journey continues to a stunning viewpoint before crossing the wilderness of Rannoch Moor to spectacular Glen Coe'

The journey continues to a stunning viewpoint and photo opportunity at Loch Tulla and across the wilderness of Rannoch Moor to famous Glen Coe. The notorious massacre of the MacDonald Clan was carried out amidst this beautiful and dramatic scenery on the 13th February 1692.

You may recognise this part of the Highlands which has been extensively used in the movies Skyfall, Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban, The Outlaw King and Mary Queen of Scots. A majestic setting in any season!

Glen Coe Istock Aspect Ratio X

After travelling along the west coast towards Fort William we stop for lunch.

As we progress towards Loch Ness you will have an opportunity to view Ben Nevis (highest mountain in Britain at 1344 m) from the famous Commando Memorial.

Here you can admire the spectacular views over the rugged landscape of Lochaber. Our journey takes us along the Caledonian Canal before arriving in Fort Augustus on the banks of legendary Loch Ness.

Here, on the banks of the world’s most mysterious stretch of water, you will have time to monster hunt by boat or from the shores of the loch itself.

'At Loch Ness you will have time to monster hunt by boat or from the shores of the famous loch itself'

Sit back and enjoy this beautiful part of the Highlands with Cruise Loch Ness, our monster-hunting partners for over 20 years. The theories are many and varied – a plesiosaur, a lost seal, a giant eel?  No Scottish holiday is complete without a search for Nessie and sonar equipment beams live images from the 200 metres deep loch to help you decide… Our return to Edinburgh takes us through Glen Spean and alongside Loch Laggan.

Hosb028 Scaled Aspect Ratio 444x310

As we enter the Cairngorms National Park we often have time for a short woodland ‘walk and talk’ in this beautiful part of Scotland. On our way south we travel past one of Scotland’s highest distilleries at Dalwhinnie and through the Grampian mountains towards Blair Castle, home of the Duke of Atholl.

Strathmashie Alamy Scaled Aspect Ratio X

Our final stop is in the heart of the Highlands (Big Tree Country in Highland Perthshire) where you can enjoy an early evening stroll through one of the picturesque villages or a quick refreshment before the final journey home.

On our approach to Edinburgh we travel across the Forth Road Bridge from which you can see the magnificent Forth Rail Bridge. Considered to be the greatest engineering achievement of the Victorian age, it is one of Scotland’s most impressive landmarks.

Loch Ness, Glencoe & The Highlands from Edinburgh

architecture

Visit from Edinburgh the most spectacular landscapes of the Scottish Highlands with our excursion to Loch Ness, Glencoe and Highlands. Enjoy the forests of the Los Trossachs National Park. Crossing Glencoe, Ben Nevis, the highest mountain in the United Kingdom, awaits us. Later, the Great Glen will welcome us. In its heart the waters of the great lakes of Scotland are immersed.

Go ahead and embark on a cruise on Scotland’s best-known lake, the home of the most mythical monster in the country: Nessie. To finish, he offers a pint in a pub in Pitlochry, a Victorian village on the banks of the River Tay.

A 190 High Street, The Royal Mile

Our meeting point is at 190 of High Street at The Royal Mile, Edinburgh where the tour to Loch Ness will start. After passing by Stirling, from the bus, you will be able to spot the impressive silhouette of the Stirling Castle and the monument of William Wallace. We will then go through The Trossachs National Park and after passing by Callander we will make a stop at the entrance of Loch Lomond National Park and The Trossachs: Kilmahog, where, if you’re lucky, you may see some Highland cattle.

We will arrive at Rannoch Moor , surrounded by mountainous landscapes, lochs and valleys. We will stop in one of the most beautiful and magical valleys in Scotland, Glencoe , where the bloody massacre of the MacDonald clan took place. You will be able to take some great photos of The Three Sisters and also try to spot some of the famous scenery from famous films such as Harry Potter and James Bond.

C Three Sisters Viewpoint

We will make another quick stop to admire the Three Sisters , three unusual rock formations. The pointy ridges are named Gearr Aonach (short ridge), Aonach Dubh (black ridge) and Beinn Fhada (long ridge).

D Fort Augustus

We will then continue with our trip to Loch Ness and pass through Fort William. This huge Scottish mountains and Ben Nevis will take us into The Great Glen . The Great Glen Fault divides the heart of The Highlands and takes in Loch Linhe, Loch Lochy, Loch Oich and Loch Ness . The Caledonian Canal and the Fort Augustus lock system will be our next destination. There’ll be plenty of time to visit the canal, to have lunch at any of the places available and to go on the Loch Ness cruise if you choose to do so. Don’t forget your camera, from this viewpoint you can get some amazong shots of the lake and its landscape.

The ticket for the one hour cruise on Loch Ness is not included in the price of the day trip. (Ticket price for clients of the Loch Ness Bus is just – £20.00 adults / £18.00 senior citizens (over 60)/ £13.00 children from 4 to 15 years old / Free children younger than 4 years old. There is no family discount available. Only card payments are accepted.

E Commando Memorial

After leaving Loch ness, we will make our way to the Commando Memorial, a monument dedicated to brave soldiers in World war Two. From here, if the mist allows, you can see the magnificent Ben Nevis , the highest mountain in the United Kingdom.

F Pitlochry

Our journey will continue on Cairngorms National Park. Loch Lagann and Ardverikie Castle will be some of the places we will see on our way to Pitlochry. This village is full of beautiful Victorian houses and will be our last stop before our return to Edinburgh. You will have time to enjoy a drink in one of its many pubs.

G Arrival to Edinburgh

On our journey back to Edinburgh you will be able to enjoy the change in scenery between the Highlands and the Lowlands and also see the 19th century Forth railway bridge that crosses the Firth of Forth , yet another of Scotland’s contributions to the World Heritage List. Once back in the Edinburgh there will still be time for us to offer you sometips on how to spend your time in Scotland’s capital city.

The best recommendations! Our guide was very attentive and talked a lot throughout the trip! It's really an educational journey!

Very professional and polite staff. Bus need some maintenance to remove irritating noise though.

Seeing Loch Ness and the castle was amazing. But what reality brought the whole trip to life was our driver and guide, Stevie B. His knowledge and passion on the history of the area and the Scottish people is profound. He is also very entertaining. He made the journey a joy. He is also a very good driver. We felt confident with him at the wheel.
