Soak up all that Europe’s most cultured river has to offer, with its wealth of grand baroque architecture, medieval cities, picture perfect towns and the sights that inspired Strauss and Mozart.

From Budapest, we slip our moorings and head on our journey north to Esztergom spending the morning exploring its historic centre, which once was Hungary’s capital, before continuing westwards to the beautiful old town of Bratislava, the capital of Slovakia. Navigating through Lower Austria we then reach the romantic town of Dürnstein. After, we visit the remarkable monastery in Melk.

Soon we arrive in Linz for a guided tour. Alternatively, take the short drive to Salzburg and enjoy a guided tour of the old town. On our way back eastwards, we will reach classical Vienna. Finally, cruising into Hungary, we arrive back in imperial Budapest, straddling the picturesque Danube. Embark in Budapest

On arrival, a coach will take you to your cruise ship. The dedicated crew are there to welcome you on board, ensuring you settle in and familiarise yourself with this first-class floating hotel.

There’s always a sense of expectancy and excitement on the eve of a cruise and, after an excellent dinner in the stylish restaurant, conversation is sure to revolve around the delights ahead.

Route Map

Overnight we have cruised upstream to Esztergom, one of Hungary’s oldest towns, a royal capital during medieval times and today the seat of the country’s archbishop. We have a guided tour of the famous neoclassical basilica, standing sentinel over the Danube on the border with Slovakia, and boasting one of the world’s largest altarpieces and a wealth of priceless religious artefacts.

The castle is also worth exploring; it was the seat of government until the Ottomans invaded in the 16th century. Nestling below are myriad atmospheric churches resonating with the enchanting sounds of choir; this is the best of provincial Hungary and is little changed since Habsburg times.

Cruise towards Bratislava

As you enjoy your first lunch on board we gently leave Esztergom in our wake, affording a fascinating opportunity to compare the different landscapes, towns and villages of Hungary on one riverbank and of Slovakia on the other.

Included experience:

Visit to Esztergom basilica.

Esztergom Basilica - Esztergom, Hungary

This morning we explore Slovakia’s fast-emerging capital city, Bratislava, on a guided tour. Until recently swathed in the drab uniformity of Communism, the city has rekindled the splendour of its imperial past in its beautifully restored Old Town. Equally impressive is the imposing 17th-century castle commanding expansive views across the Danube.

Cruise towards Dürnstein

This afternoon we cruise into Lower Austria, a peaceful, bucolic region and home to some of the country’s best wines. By now the stresses of everyday life seem distant as you absorb the ever-changing scenes, we pass children playing on the riverbanks, young couples strolling arm in arm like generations before them, vignerons carefully pruning their vines, and cobbled quaysides lined by half-timbered buildings.

You’ll marvel as the Captain skilfully navigates the ship along the serene river and through locks whose mechanisms never cease to fascinate, as we cruise towards Dürnstein.

Guided tour of Bratislava.

Bratislava, Slovakia

Dürnstein & Melk

Dürnstein is known principally for the ice-blue tower of its abbey, which dominates the view, and the castle where Richard the Lionheart was imprisoned in 1192 after being shipwrecked on his return from the crusades.

This morning we take a guided walking tour to explore this memorable city further. Set on a rocky outcrop high above the river, the castle is now ruined, but it’s easy to imagine England’s legendary monarch seething with frustration far from home, while waiting for his family to raise funds to pay his ransom.

After lunch you visit the remarkable Melk Abbey. Nothing quite prepares you for your first sight of this enormous honey-coloured building, standing resplendent above the surrounding countryside. Originally a castle, it was gifted to the Benedictine Order in the 11th-century and, although reconstructed in Baroque style during the 18th century, it has remained a monastic school and monastery ever since.

The Abbey is renowned for its 214-yard-long Emperor’s Gallery lined with portraits, many fine rooms and an ornate library. After we re-join the ship, dinner is served during the final part of our cruise upstream through the pretty Nibelungengau, immortalised in the music of Wagner.

Included experiences:

Guided tours of Dürnstein & Melk Abbey.

Melk Abbey - Melk, Austria

Salzburg or Linz

Reaching Linz, you will have the choice to stay in the city and take a guided walking tour, exploring its charming baroque old town. At its heart you’ll see one of the finest squares in Austria, lined by grand pastel-coloured facades with an impressive central Trinity Column of white marble, crowned by a gilded sunburst. There’s also the fortress-like castle, built high above the city by Emperor Friedrich III, now a museum housing a fine collection of nineteenth and twentieth-century artworks.

Alternatively, we drive to Salzburg, once an independent state whose archbishops turned it into one of the most sophisticated cities north of the Alps. Dominating the skyline is one of Europe’s largest stone fortresses, the Hohensalzburg, while beneath its walls church domes and spires rise from the delightful Altstadt, or Old Town. Then there’s the wonderful Hellbrunn Palace and the splendid formal gardens of the Mirabell Palace – a must for horticulture fans.

This morning, discover some of the city’s main sights in the company of an expert local guide, then you’re free to explore as you wish. Everywhere there are sights associated with the city’s most famous resident, Mozart, who played the harpsichord aged three, composed rudimentary music at five and wrote his first opera when he was 11!

We return to the ship for another splendid dinner.

Guided tour of Linz or Salzburg.

Salzburg, Austria

For many, today’s visit to Vienna will be one of the highlights of the cruise. The city’s very name provokes images of elegance, fine music, wide boulevards, Baroque architecture and a rich tapestry of peoples who were drawn here from all corners of Europe.

For 200 years until the First World War, Vienna was the cultural centre of Europe and many of the showpiece buildings, galleries, aristocratic palaces and magnificent churches you see today were built to reflect its imperial status. The city’s most iconic monument is the breathtaking Saint Stephen’s Cathedral, whose striking multi-coloured roof and huge Gothic South Tower dominate the skyline.

There’s also the colossal Hofburg, the former royal court that is now home to a collection of museums, the Crown Jewels and the Spanish Riding School, and where the Vienna Boys’ Choir performs. Then there are the lavish Imperial Apartments and an outstanding collection of relics of the Holy Roman Empire, including, allegedly, the sabre of Charlemagne himself. The Kunsthistorisches Museum, which contains the world’s fourth largest collection of paintings, is just across the road.

This morning we have a tour with a local guide offering insights into why Vienna is one of Europe’s great capitals – the seat of the Habsburg emperors and home to some of the world’s finest classical composers, including Beethoven, Brahms, Mozart and, of course, a whole family of Strausses.

During the afternoon you’re free to explore as you wish. Take a stroll in the Prater, notable for the huge Ferris wheel that features in several Cold War spy thrillers. Or, for something quite different, visit the Schönbrunn Palace, a former royal residence now housing a range of world-class museums and galleries. Perhaps, though, just take a stroll through Vienna’s atmospheric side streets, or enjoy a coffee and a slice of delicious Sachertorte in one of the lovely coffee houses.

This evening we have something special in store. Not only do we have our indulgent Chef's Dinner, but we've also organised for a live musical experience on board. So after this special dinner, sit back and enjoy an intimate classical recital. To hear this exquisite music in Vienna - where it was created - is truly the icing on the cake.

Guided tour of Vienna & live classical recital.

Wiener Ringstrasse - Vienna, Austria

Cruise towards Budapest

Enjoy a leisurely morning as we cruise majestically through Hungary’s peaceful pastoral landscape towards Budapest. After breakfast head up onto the magnificent sun deck to enjoy some fabulous river views as we cruise along the 'Daunbe Bend', surrounded by historic and picturesque cities like Visegrad and Szentendre. Castle ruins, churches, pretty houses perching on the hills, and thick forests are reflected in the waters of the river. Squeeze in a spot of reading on the sun deck or simply recline, letting the gentle breezes lull you into a relaxing doze.

After lunch we enjoy a sightseeing tour of this captivating city, which truly lives up to its reputation as the ‘Pearl of the Danube’.

The twin cities of Buda, built around the hilltop fortress, and Pest, with its wide boulevards, were fought over through the centuries. The Ottomans ruled here for 150 years before being ousted in the late 17th century, but their legacy lives on in the many thermal baths fed by hot springs, giving rise to Budapest’s other sobriquet – the ‘City of Spas’.

After the end of Ottoman rule, Budapest became an imperial city of the Habsburg Empire, attracting great cultural and commercial wealth. Castle Hill is Budapest in microcosm: two churches, seven museums and a theatre among streets and squares with their own special atmosphere and a dramatic view across the river to the awe-inspiring neo-Gothic Parliament Building. Budapest’s endless galleries, museums, outstanding Art Nouveau architecture and excellent shopping offer a fittingly elegant end to your Danube cruise.

This evening’s dinner closes with a Hungarian folklore show, giving you time to bid farewell to your travelling companions and reflect on all the inspirational places, sights and sounds you have experienced on a truly ‘imperial’ cruise.

Initiated in the mid-20th century, the hydrofoil service between these two iconic cities was envisioned to enhance cross-border connectivity. Over the years, the service has seen technological advancements, growing from basic vessels to today's luxurious crafts. Notably, in the late 1990s, the service witnessed an unprecedented surge in popularity among tourists and business travelers alike.

Upon boarding, passengers are greeted with modern interiors and plush seating. Amenities such as onboard Wi-Fi, dining services, and panoramic windows elevate the journey. The trip, spanning roughly 2.5 hours, gifts travelers with vistas of the Danube’s banks, historic landmarks, and picturesque towns.

The hydrofoil stands out in several ways:

  • Speed and efficiency: Quicker than traditional boats and competitive with road travel.
  • Environmental benefits: Reduced water disturbance compared to larger vessels.
  • Comfort: Spacious seating, fewer vibrations, and a unique travel experience.
  • Directness: Both Budapest and Vienna's terminals are centrally located, making city transitions smooth.

Tickets can be booked online or at terminals, with prices varying based on class. Departures are usually in the morning, with afternoon returns, but it's advised to check schedules. Luggage allowance is generous, but oversized items might incur fees.

In Budapest , travelers can indulge in the thermal baths, explore the Buda Castle, and wander along the Danube promenade. Vienna , the city of music, welcomes with the Schönbrunn Palace, Viennese coffeehouses, and a rich musical legacy.

While hydrofoil is exceptional, other options include:

  • Trains: Offering frequent services but longer travel times.
  • Buses: Economical, yet less comfortable.
  • River Cruises: Slower but with immersive experiences.

Each mode has its pros and cons, catering to various preferences.

The hydrofoil service between Budapest and Vienna isn't just a mode of transport—it's an experience. Travelers seeking efficiency, luxury, and unique perspectives will find this journey unforgettable.

Budapest to Vienna - 15 Best Ways to Travel in 2024

19 Sept. 2023 by Kamilla

When planning your trip to Central Europe, you should include two of the greatest capitals - Budapest and Vienna - in your itinerary. Both are beautiful, full of history, offer great things to do, and are worth exploring. With Budapest to Vienna distance only less than 300 km, you can easily visit both during your trip!

If you are looking for information on how to get from Budapest to Vienna, you are in the right place. We compiled this guide with all the updated info you might need to navigate your Budapest to Vienna trip smoothly. Read on and plan your perfect holiday in Central Europe.

1. Budapest to Vienna by Train

Most people traveling from Budapest to Vienna choose trains. With frequent connections, comfortable trains, and the Budapest to Vienna travel time of around 2 hours and 40 minutes, this is the easiest way of getting between the two capitals. The Budapest to Vienna trains depart every hour from 5:40 in the morning to 20:40.

Every second connection is served by the high-speed RailJet trains that are very comfortable, with complimentary wifi, a restaurant onboard, or a quiet zone (which is an excellent idea if you would like to relax during your trip). Other connections are comfortable too, running as the EuroCity trains. All the trains depart from the Keleti station and stop at the Budapest Kelenföld station before continuing the journey towards Vienna.

Budapest to Vienna train ticket If you plan your Budapest to Vienna trip in advance, you can find affordable tickets for the train journey, starting at €13 (the regular price for this route is €50,50). You can easily purchase the tickets online at the websites of either Hungarian Railways or Austrian Railways (it’s worth checking both as sometimes the price for the same trip from Budapest to Vienna by train might vary).

You can also buy the ticket the traditional way, at the train station in Budapest. The largest one (from where the trains to Vienna depart) is Keleti - you will find the ticket offices on the underground level, just before the escalators to the platforms. Since Keleti is a large and busy train station, be sure to be here ahead of time to find your way around, especially if you need to get a ticket for your journey. Trains to Vienna usually depart from the platforms in front, on the right side, but double-check the platform after arriving at the station.

You can also buy your ticket at other train stations in Budapest: Nyugati, Deli, or Kelenföld.

Budapest to Vienna Eurorail pass Those who travel around Europe with Interrail or Eurorail tickets can get from Budapest to Vienna by train using the pass too. The seat reservation is not mandatory, but since these are popular connections, we recommend buying one, especially if you travel during peak hours.

The reservation costs €3, and you can buy it online at the Austrian Railways website or at the train station. Before the trip, you can check the travel planner on this website, too, as it indicates the estimated popularity of the connection.

Train stations in Budapest and Vienna All the trains from Budapest to Vienna depart from the beautiful Keleti train station in the Pest side of the city, where you can quickly get by public transport, especially the metro. Passengers aboard a river cruise ship in Vienna are currently unable to disembark due to flooding .

Thurgau Prestige embarked on a 8-day trip between Linz and Budapest on Friday 13 September 2024 and was due to reach the Hungarian capital on Monday 16 September.

The vessel has been moored in Vienna, Austria since Saturday 14 September, however, due to high water levels caused by Storm Boris .

102 passengers – 99 of whom are Swiss – and 40 crew members are believed to currently be aboard Thurgau Travel’s Thurgau Prestige .

In a statement made on 16 September, a spokesperson for Thurgau Travel described how at the time of press, Thurgau Prestige was safely moored in Vienna.

The passengers and crew were reported to be fine and well, and decisions as to when the ship could continue sailing, or when the passengers would be able to disembark, would be made by Austrian authorities.

How to find the perfect balance of cool and kitsch on a Vienna city break this Christmas

According to the statement, Danube water levels had risen so much that shipping in the Vienna area had to be stopped. It also notes that experts had not expected this to happen, and that there were a number of other river vessels waiting in Vienna to continue their journeys.

When contacted by The Independent 17 September, a spokesperson for Thurgau Prestige indicated there had been “a significant change” with regards MS Thurgau Prestige, but did not elaborate further. The current status of the vessel is unknown.

The flooded River Danube in Vienna on Monday 16 September 2024

The news comes as Storm Boris wreaks havoc across central and eastern Europe, causing record rainfall and flash flooding . At least 19 people are known to have died in the floods, with the death toll rising .

On Monday 16 September, the mayor of Polish city Nysa, Kordian Kolbiarz, issued an evacuation order , urging all 44,000 residents to seek higher ground due to the risk of a nearby embankment breaching.

Storm Boris, which unleashed a month’s worth of rainfall in just 24 hours, has caused severe flooding in Poland, Austria , Romania, and the Czech Republic , with rivers overflowing and embankments threatening to break under the strain of the floodwaters.

What We Know About the Deadly Floods in Central Europe

At least 17 people have died and thousands have been displaced. “Relief is not expected to come before tomorrow, and more likely, the day after,” an official in Austria said.

By Amelia Nierenberg

Reporting from London

At least 17 people were dead and several others missing on Monday after days of flooding in Central Europe. Thousands were displaced, and with heavy rains continuing in some places, officials feared there could be more destruction ahead.

The floodwaters have ravaged towns, destroyed bridges and breached dams since intense rainfall from Storm Boris — a slow-moving, low-pressure system — began last week. Emergency workers have made daring rescues of people and even pets as officials assessed the scale of the damage.

For some, the disaster recalled the devastating floods that struck the region in July 1997, killing more than 100 people and driving thousands of others out of their homes.

“This was a very traumatic one for Poland — the one that is remembered,” Hubert Rozyk, a spokesman for Poland’s Ministry of Climate and Environment, said of that disaster. “And in some places, the situation is even worse than in 1997.”

Here’s what we know about the destruction in some of the worst-hit countries.

Two men carrying a third, older man through chest-high floodwaters.

Seven people have died in Romania, Dr. Raed Arafat, the head of the Department for Emergency Situations in the Ministry of Internal Affairs said in a phone call on Monday.

All of the deaths occurred overnight from Friday to Saturday and all in Galati County, he said, which is on the eastern border with Moldova. A preliminary evaluation found that about 5,500 households in Galati were affected by floods. In Vaslui County, which is directly to the north, about 120 households were affected, he said.

He said it was “one of the worst floods in recent memory especially for that area.”

Romania’s environment minister, Mircea Fechet, told The Associated Press that some areas had received more than 42 gallons of rainfall per square meter. “What we are trying to do right now is save as many lives as possible,” he said.

At least five people have died, Piotr Blaszczyk, a spokesman for the government security center, wrote in an email on Monday. He said the government had not yet confirmed if their deaths were “directly connected to the catastrophic flooding,” but that initial reports suggested that they were found in “areas severely impacted by rising water levels.”

Even though the storm has passed, “many rivers are still swollen, and water levels remain precariously high, threatening additional damage to infrastructure, homes, and agricultural land,” he wrote.

Some flood barriers held; others were breached to devastating effect. Dams have been damaged or breached, including in Stronie Slaskie, a southwestern town on the Morawka River, said Anna Szumanska, a spokeswoman for Poland’s infrastructure ministry. “Water began to flow uncontrolled,” she wrote in an email.

The ground is so saturated and the water levels are so high in some rivers that there is still a risk of further flooding, Mr. Blaszczyk said.

Polish officials were meeting on Monday to decide whether to declare a national disaster and Mr. Blaszczyk said that temporary shelters have been erected in schools and community centers. Many officials have been working for days with little rest, Mr. Rozyk, the climate ministry spokesman, said from Opole, a city in the flooded region.

“The situation is still not under control in all the places,” he said. “However, the rain stopped, so that’s good news.”

Czech Republic

David Schön, a spokesman for the Czech police, said that at least two people had been killed in the floods and 12 were missing.

He said in an email that more than 12,000 people had been evacuated in the Moravian-Silesian region, the Olomouc region and the South Moravian region, all in the east.

At least three people have been killed in Austria, according to Paul Eidenberger, a press officer for the interior ministry. One, a volunteer firefighter, died when he slipped on the stairs while pumping water out of a basement, Mr. Eidenberger said in an email. Two older men also died, apparently after being trapped inside their homes, he said.

The flooding has affected communities throughout the country, but “the most significant problems, damage, and flooding” are in Lower Austria, the state that surrounds Vienna, he said.

Vienna, which has about two million people, has also been hard hit. Public transit has been suspended or severely restricted, and the river “has become a raging torrent — normally, it carries only a few centimeters of water,” Mr. Eidenberger wrote.

Hundreds of people have been rescued from rooftops by helicopter. Mr. Eidenberger said that tens of thousands of volunteers had been deployed across the country, about 20,000 in Lower Austria alone.

Dams are still threatening to overflow. “That’s the most difficult situation right now,” said Markus Duerauer, a liaison officer of the Lower Austrian Fire Brigade Association.

And the rain is still coming down hard. “Relief is not expected to come before tomorrow, and more likely, the day after,” Mr. Eidenberger wrote Monday morning.

Clia 2025 Budapest river cruise conference sells out

  • Share by email

Clia’s 2025 RiverView Conference in Budapest next March sold out in just over 24 hours.

The three-day event from March 8-10, went on sale on Wednesday morning last week and by midday on Thursday, all 500 agent places had been snapped up.

The association’s UK & Ireland managing director Andy Harmer said it was the fastest-selling Clia event of all time and is now looking at ways to make additional places and opportunities available for more agents to attend.

“It will be the 15 th year of our RiverView conference next year. When we started, about 50 agents joined us, but now we have 500 signed up and a significant wait-list,” said Harmer.

Asked why the event had grown in popularity so much, he said: “Firstly, agents are now switched on to the opportunities that the river cruise sector offers, and secondly, they have recognised that the three days of conference are an amazing way to learn more about the sector, hear from some great river cruise and destination experts and see multiple ships in one go.”

Six ships will be in Budapest for agents to experience. They are Riviera’s MS William Wordsworth, Viva Cruises’ Viva Two, Scenic’s Scenic Opal, AmaWaterways’ Ama Sonata, Tui River Cruises’ Tui Skyla and Riverside’s Riverside Mozart.

“The range of ships on offer on the Danube over our three conference days is amazing. The reason we choose the dates we do, is that it’s just before the ships enter service with paying customers for the season.”

Harmer said he was hoping the supporting lines would either be able to make more cabins available to host agents overnight, or that more lines would bring a ship to the city.

Clia will be repeating its New To Selling River Cruise masterclass the day before the main conference, following great success of the inaugural event earlier this year.

“Over 200 agents attended the New To River Cruise masterclass in 2024, meaning they paid to come out a day early and covered their own hotel accommodation, such is the demand to learn about this sector,” he said.

Fam trips after the conference will also take place.

“The river cruise lines have made a large number of places available on post-RiverView fam trips along the Danube to Vienna. We are aiming for at least a third of agent delegates will stay and sail, so they truly understand the river cruising experience,” said Harmer.
