Fantastic experience and great to see 4 very different areas. The guide was very good at spotting the more distant animals and the food was great. We were expecting to camp each night on this budget safari but 2 nights were in a cabin complex, which was a pleasant surprise. Highly recommended.

Great experiences in the National Park We had a super great, well organized two weeks in the Serengeti National Park, as well as in the Ngorogoro Crater. We were picked up on time at the airport in Arusha at the very beginning and had perfect service from then on. We were together with Jerome D. Swai and the driver Cypiars which both can only be recommended. Jerome cooks wonderful food!!! We did a trip in tents, was just great the feeling to be so close to the wild nature. Can only say: Top people, top quality, top food and super much seen. It was just great, thank you again to meet you. Greetings from Switzerland P.S: Since spontaneously write here, only photos of photos from our safari photo book :-), hope that still gives an approximate impression of the experienced.

12 Days Kenya Explorer Safari - Nairobi Tour

12 Days Kenya Explorer Safari - Nairobi

5 star ++++ This was an amazing experience. Great communication from Bryan before I went, answered any questions I had within hours. My guide Dennis, what can I say this man knows the parks and where to find the animals, dont think there is an animal I didnt see, he went above and beyond making sure I seen everything and getting the right photo shot or even taking photos for me. We had some long journeys in the van just him and I we spoke about Kenyan and Irish life, listened to some Kenyan music, got stuck in mud from heavy rain everyone helped everyone to get out of the mud all part of the experience. I was a solo female traveller and felt safe for all the 12 days which certainly means alot so I could enjoy the animals views etc. Kenya is a beautiful country, with beautiful lovely friendly people. I cannot recommend this tour enough ?

East Africa Safari Touring Company Reviews

The safari to Tarangire, Serengeti, and Ngorongoro Crater and Conservation Area was excellent. The guide, Lewis, was quite knowledgeable, the accommodation better than other camp sites, and the meals very delicious. It also helped that we saw all five of the Big 5! In addition, we saw baby elephants rolling about in the mud, a pack of spotted hyena dealing with a carcass, and a male and female lion attempting to mate. Lake Manyara was a little disappointing because the heavy rains had stirred up the mud in the water and discouraged the birds from feeding there. I also felt that the guide was not as informative as Lewis. The visit to Materuni Falls was good although very muddy because of the wet weather. The food was excellent and the coffee tour very lively and entertaining.
My 6 day safari with Bon Voyage Safaris to Maasai Mara and Serengeti was a once-in-a-lifetime adventure. The professionalism, expertise, and passion displayed by the staff, coupled with the breathtaking landscapes and abundant wildlife, made it an experience beyond compare. I highly recommend Bon Voyage Safaris to anyone seeking an unforgettable safari experience in East Africa.

Where to go in East Africa

Between August and November each year, Kenya’s world-famous Masai Mara reserve hosts the region’s magnificent wildebeest migration , but it also has one of the most diversified permanent animal populations.

The Amboseli and Samburu wildlife parks are two of Kenya’s most popular safari destinations . Kenya is a great place to visit if you want to see giraffes up close at Giraffe Manor, hot air balloon over the Masai Mara or just to see some of the best game reserves in the world.

Nairobi National Park has a diverse range of species , including lions, African leopards, elephants, cheetahs, eastern black rhinos, cape buffalo, coke’s hartebeest, hippo, giraffe, zebra, and baboons.

When it comes to a safari in East Africa, Rwanda is truly unique .  Fly into Kigali, Rwanda’s capital, and you’ll be in the verdant wonderland of the Volcanoes National Park, the rainforest home to numerous mountain gorilla families, a great area for gorilla trekking.

Volcanoes National Park has six active and three dead volcanoes , it’s breathtakingly gorgeous, and it’s home to the nearly extinct mountain gorilla. The latter is the park’s main draw, but this Rwandan part of the Virunga Massif, which crosses the borders of Rwanda, Uganda, and the Democratic Republic of the Congo, offers many additional trekking routes to explore, even if you aren’t looking for gorillas. You could see indigenous golden monkeys, forest elephants, or buffalo if you look for them.

Nyungwe National Park is East Africa’s biggest expanse of tropical rainforest, covering over 1,000km2 and home to a massive population of chimps, as well as Ruwenzori colobus and L’Hoest’s monkeys. There are also 130 kilometres of hiking paths of various lengths. The Igishigishigi Trail is the shortest and goes to East Africa’s tallest canopy walk, while the Bigugu Trail climbs to the park’s namesake highest peak at 2,950m.

The Serengeti , Ngorongoro Crater, and Lake Manyara, Tanzania’s most famous safari destinations , are all conveniently close to each other on the ‘Northern Safari Circuit,’ and, together with Tarangire, provide some of Africa’s greatest Big 5 game watching and wildebeest migration safaris .

Southern Tanzania is less well-known, although it has some of the best game reserves in the world, including Ruaha, Selous, and Katavi. The unique Mahale Mountains around Lake Tanganyika are intriguing for an off-the-beaten-path adventure into the bush, with woods full of chimpanzees and magnificent clouds of butterflies. Other places you can visit chimpanzees include Gombe Stream which also ranks among the finest places to track charismatic apes anywhere in Africa.

Mountain gorillas can be found in Uganda’s Bwindi Impenetrable Forest . Because of a new partnership between local people, national parks, and visitors trekking to see gorillas, the number of gorillas is increasing.

Gorilla trekking is one of Africa’s most unique and remarkable experiences : see wild gorillas in their native environment, with no fences or any human interference other than mild acclimatization to human presence in the jungle.

Uganda is also a well-known bird-watching location, having a diverse range of exotic migratory and resident species. It provides the greatest on-foot chimp interactions in Africa at Kibale Forest, as well as unusual combo safaris in Murchison Falls and Queen Elizabeth National Parks with big game and big primates.

When is the best month to travel to east africa.

  • East Africa in January

Despite the fact that it falls outside of the region’s ‘long’ and’short’ rain periods, January falls within Kenya’s rainy season. Because of the high temperatures in January, clear, sunny days are expected, resulting in excellent visibility, which should be ideal for viewing wildlife on safari in Kenya .

In terms of visitor numbers, January is a low season month for a safari in Tanzania . Despite the high humidity, this is the start of the Great Migration’s calving season, and it is a sight not to be missed. This is a rare opportunity to see predator-prey interactions in the wild.

Tourists love to go on safari in   Rwanda  in January because the weather is warm and sunny. Most of the time, it’s also dry. This is a great time to go gorilla-trekking because of the fantastic weather.

  • East Africa in February

Around 400 000 calves are born each year in the Serengeti during the month of February when millions of wildebeest flock to graze. This indicates the existence of large predators, such as big cats, and that a predatory encounter is inevitable. European migratory birds arrive in February as well, adorning the landscape with their brilliant colors.

Kenya’s climate in February is characterized by being relatively dry and clear. It’s much easier to see the predatory action between the animals on a Kenya Safari when the weather is like this.

This time of year is a popular time of year for tourists to go on safari in Rwanda because the weather is warm and sunny. In most cases, it is also dry. Going gorilla trekking right now is a no-brainer because of the perfect weather.

  • East Africa in March

During March, a safari in Tanzania’s Serengeti is great because of the lush green landscapes, with vast herds of wildebeest and zebra consuming enormous amounts of grass in preparation for the long journey northward.

This is one of the warmest times of year to visit the Seychelles . Not only is the weather nice and tranquil, but April also marks the commencement of superb diving options in and around the islands. This time of year is ideal for snorkeling, scuba diving, and swimming.

  • East Africa in April

Tanzania’s “long” rains are still going strong in April. In addition to the lush vegetation that sometimes conceals animals, parks in the South and West tend to be particularly humid in April. Despite all of this, wildlife viewing in the Serengeti is fantastic and the Great Migration is in full swing.

  • East Africa in May

The start of the dry season, as well as the northern leg of the migration, occurs in May. Due to the high temperatures of Tanzania, the occasional afternoon or evening thundershower is extremely welcome.

In contrast, wildlife viewing in the Serengeti can be spectacular in May, with large herds of elephants and zebras traversing the park’s central and western regions.

If you can handle the rain and don’t mind getting muddy then May is also an excellent month to visit Rwanda . The rains provide an abundance of food, so the gorillas descend down the mountain slopes for warmth and vegetation.

May is one of the warmest months in the Seychelles, making it ideal for a beach vacation. May brings more spectacular diving possibilities around the islands on a Seychelles island holiday .

  • East Africa in June

Kenya ‘s  climate is cooler and less humid in June, making it an ideal time to travel with children in the country’s capital. In Tanzania, on the other hand, the parks and woodlands begin to dry out, making it an excellent time for game viewing in the Serengeti, particularly in the northernmost regions.

June marks the start of Rwanda’s long dry season, which is ideal for a gorilla trekking safari . Dry, strong trails facilitate trekking and tracking. As the month continues, the jungle becomes less dense, making the gorillas easier to photograph.

This is the start of the dry season in Zanzibar, and the weather is excellent for days on the beach or swimming on a Zanzibar holiday .

  • East Africa in July

This month marks the start of arguably the most well-known event in the natural world. Hundreds of thousands of wildebeest gather along the Mara River’s banks, contemplating their fate.

After a fantastic journey to the Serengeti to see the Great Migration, Zanzibar is the ideal place to unwind and relax. A Zanzibar holiday in July’s dry season provides excellent temperatures and calm, clear seas.

  • East Africa in August

The migration begins to spill over into the Masai Mara as the wildebeest continue to cross the Mara River in the Serengeti.

Visitors and vehicle numbers are at their peak at this time of year, but this is due to the high density of predators in the area, as well as the frequent occurrences of predator-prey interactions, which make this a very popular time of year for a Kenya Safari .

August is the busiest month for gorilla treks in Rwanda . The foliage has completely disappeared, and the primates are running low on food. Photographic opportunities are at their greatest when the foliage is this thin.

  • East Africa in September

As the wildebeest make their way over the Mara River at this time of year, the crocodiles are usually well stocked with food and have enough to sustain them till next year.

We therefore suggest the more remote Ruaha and Selous areas during this period for a safari in Tanzania . Safaris in this part of the world are far more tranquil because of the abundance of wildlife and the low number of vehicles.

A Zanzibar holiday is also a fantastic experience to have in September. With mild temperatures and oceans that are still clear and tranquil.

  • East Africa in October

Rain is forecast for a safari in the Serengeti  and migrating herds are returning to the region’s revitalized grasslands in October.

The best places to see the herds in October are in Kenya’s southeastern Masai Mara and Tanzania’s northeastern Serengeti.

  • East Africa in November

The optimum time to go chimpanzee trekking in Rwanda is during the rainy season, even though gorilla trekking may be done at any time of year. It is during the month of November when witnessing the chimps is the most rewarding experience. Because of the abundance of foliage, chimpanzees do not have to travel far in order to forage, making them easy to track down.

In November, Uganda experiences a brief rainy season, and although the gorillas’ pathways may be muddy and difficult, they tend to descend down the mountain toward the plentiful food sources. This may shorten the journey to locate gorillas, as well as reducing the length of time spent in the rain.

  • East Africa in December

Since the rains commenced in December, thousands of wildebeest have moved into the Serengeti’s southernmost portion, where they are now approaching the Ngorongoro Conservation Area. The calving season is barely a month away, so everyone can expect big bellies on their safari adventure .

Going gorilla trekking in Uganda during the short dry December season is great. Because the long rains have yet to arrive, the foliage is still quite thin. This means that photographing and discovering the primates of East Africa is much easier at this time of year, making it the perfect Christmas activity.

Faqs about east africa.

  • Parents who are travelling with their child but not their spouse and those who wish to send their child on a trip accompanied by someone other than a parent or unaccompanied require an unabridged birth certificate. (It does not affect those travelling within South Africa.)
  • An Unabridged certificate is a certificate that reflects the particulars of both parents of the child. All children born in South Africa after 14 March 2013 were issued with a valid unabridged birth certificate automatically and free of charge.
  • Everyone born before that and those from countries who do not automatically issue an unabridged certificate must apply for the document well before their travel date.
  • The application process for Unabridged Birth Certificate are as follow; You can apply at your nearest Home Affairs office where your Biometric information will be varied. You will need your ID book along as well as your child’s ID number.
  • All documents submitted must be originals or certified copies. The Unabridged Birth Certificate costs R75. It can take up to eight weeks to acquire an Unabridged Birth Certificate from the date of application.
  • Wi-Fi is the best option when planning on using your smartphone while on safari. Using apps such as Skype for Android and iOS, Viber for Android and iOS as well as Google Hangouts for Android is the best way to stay in touch with your loved ones. Most camps and lodges have free Wi-Fi for guests to make free calls and texts messages.

Our Recommended Activities in East Africa

  • Camel Safaris in East Africa
  • Coffee farm visit
  • Diving & Snorkelling in East Africa
  • Horseback riding in East Africa
  • Zanzibar Stone Town tour

A fairly new activity, camelback riding is an incredible experience. Camelback safaris take place in northern Kenya’s Laikipia county. These gentle creatures have a soft nature as they quietly stroll through the arid landscape. This mode of transport was used by the Arab traders and has filtered down to northern Kenya’s Samburu and Turkana tribes.

It’s the place where much of the world’s Java’s come from, and you can be part of it. East Africa is renowned for its high altitude and therefore good coffee-growing areas. Kenya, Tanzania, Uganda and Rwanda, specifically, have big coffee and tea plantations working to their full capacity. The growing of coffee is both intricate and interesting and it is the perfect activity to do on arrival and or departure.

Any time of the year is a good time to explore the fascinating world that thrives below the surface of Africa’s lengthy and beautiful coastline. The coastline of Africa is very long and very interesting. These destinations hold an incredible number of water-based activities. Diving and snorkelling are just two of the many ways to explore and discover the fascinating and beautiful marine life and corals of these alluring waters.

Breath in the aromas of the bush and feel the breeze in your hair during an adventure on horseback. Horseback safaris are one of the best ways to get close to the bush without being on foot. The freedom of riding a horse across the plains is absolutely exhilarating.  While the more adventurous can enjoy several days of safari on horseback, those that are strapped for time can take a quick, half-day ride in the vicinity of the camp or lodge. Because horses aren’t seen as a threat, antelope and even animals, like lions and elephant, get much closer than they would to a group during a safari on foot. Horseback safaris are entirely safe. They take place in a completely controlled environment and the guides are knowledgeable and well-informed about the area.

Follow the trail of the sultans, slaves and explorers in the winding streets of Stone Town. Learn all about the events that shaped Zanzibar, from the excellent guides that lead the tours of Stone Town. Walk-in between the buildings where history shaped the city and visit the former Slave Market, the Anglican Cathedral, the House of Wonders, the Sultans’ Palace Museum and the Old Arab Fort and Dispensary.

On this safari, you’ll look for big cats, including lions, leopards, cheetahs, servals, and, if you’re lucky, caracals. Expect to witness predator-prey interaction as well. The world’s two most significant big cat reserves, Tanzania’s Serengeti and Kenya’s Masai Mara , provide the highest concentration of big cats in Africa.

Everyone who goes on a safari in East Africa for the first time wants to see the oh-so-famous “Big Five”. Luckily, there are a lot of parks and reserves to choose from! Kenya’s Masai Mara , Tanzania’s Serengeti National Park , the Ngorongoro Crater , South Africa’s Kruger National Park and Botswana’s Okavango Delta are just a few of the lot.

East Africa is home to some of the world’s most unique bird species, several of which are only found locally. Among Africa’s top four birding safari locations are Kenya , Tanzania , and Uganda , which have the largest number of bird species reported in the continent.

The ideal way to spend quality time with a loved one is in the wide outdoors of Africa’s huge open spaces, far from the crowds. These safari spots provide a romantic setting for a safari honeymoon in East Africa. Indulge in the ultimate African bush experience, whether you’re commemorating a milestone anniversary or savoring your first moments as husband and wife.

Great Migration safaris put you in the perfect position at the right time to follow the Great Wildebeest Migration’s journey through East Africa . For migration safaris, July to September are often the ideal months to visit. Seeing the legendary wildebeest river crossings and predator interactions that go along with this famous fast-paced trek are much more likely when traveling along both sides of the great Mara River on your Safari.

If you have an interest in East Africa’s primates, birds and culture, this journey is for you. See the endangered mountain gorilla in both Rwanda’s Volcanoes National Park and Uganda’s Bwindi Forest, spend a full day with the chimpanzees at Kibale, track golden monkeys in Mgahinga, see plains game in Queen Elizabeth National Park and the tree-climbing lions of the Ishasha plains, go on a boat cruise on the Kazinga channel and experience the genocide memorial in Kigali.

When you go on safari in East Africa you may expect to see hills, massive rift valleys, and volcanoes. Mountain climbing and hiking are also popular activities in all three countries. These locations will show you the stunning Rwenzori Mountains, Mount Kilimanjaro and Mount Kenya, which are ideal for an adventure. Hiking up the volcanoes of East Africa is an unforgettable experience that should be experienced by all thrillseekers.

When it comes to discovering the African wilderness, nothing beats a walking safari in East Africa. Because many East African lodges are located in privately owned reserves and conservancies, visitors may enjoy naturalist-led short treks around camp. Aside from Tanzania’s Serengeti and Tarangire national parks, Kenya’s Masai Mara is also an excellent location for a walking safari .

The Best East African Safari Tours

The Best East African Safari Tours

Ariadne is an Africa expert. She and her husband form a team who author many guidebooks to African countries.

East Africa is home to an incredible number of iconic safari destinations. The Masai Mara National Reserve, Serengeti National Park, the Ngorongoro Crater, Lake Nakuru National Park … and the list goes on. And then there are the bucket-list highlights, such as gorilla trekking and the wildebeest migration. Making sense of how it all fits together and what can be done on a standard trip can be overwhelming, though. Luckily, SafariBookings has got you covered with a great selection of tours to fit everybody’s needs. Browse our favorite East African safaris to get inspired.

East African Safari Tours

1. Northern Circuit Safari in Tanzania (Including Serengeti)

Wildebeest migration

  • Days : 4 to 7 days
  • Parks : Lake Manyara National Park , Serengeti National Park , Ngorongoro Crater

If you’re looking for an action-packed safari with lots of variety, look no further than Tanzania’s Northern circuit. Just a short drive out of the gateway city of Arusha is Lake Manyara National Park, a scenic little gem in the Rift Valley. It’s known for tree-climbing lions, and the birdlife is phenomenal. Next you’ll spend a couple of nights in Serengeti National Park. The endless plains are dotted with big herds of grazers, and predators are never far off. You might also have a chance to see the great migration, Africa’s most impressive wildlife spectacle. On your way back to Arusha, you’ll descend into the Ngorongoro Crater. The forested crater rim creates a perfect backdrop for all the wildlife drama that unfolds on the crater floor. You’ll see more animals here in one day than you might have thought possible, including the endangered black rhino.

Northern Tanzania Safaris (4 to 7 Days)

2. Tanzania Safari & Zanzibar Island

Zanzibar beach

  • Days : 6 to 14 days
  • Parks : Nyerere (Selous) National Park , Lake Manyara National Park , Serengeti National Park , Ngorongoro Crater

Tanzania offers the perfect safari-and-beach combo. Most popular is a safari in Tanzania’s Northern circuit (see above), followed by a tropical Zanzibar beach holiday. The island is known for its white sandy beaches, crystal-clear turquoise waters, and Stone Town, the historic part of Zanzibar city. There’s plenty to do in Zanzibar. Recommended day trips include snorkeling on colorful offshore coral reefs, and spice tours into the island’s rural interior. Alternatively, for a quick safari add-on to a Zanzibar tour, Nyerere National Park (formerly Selous Game Reserve) is a great option. Here you can pack a lot into a short stay. Activities include game drives, walking safaris and boat cruises on the mighty Rufiji River.

Tanzania Safari & Zanzibar (6 to 14 Days)

3. Masai Mara Safari in Kenya

Great Migration of the Wildebeest, heading out looking for water

  • Days : 3 to 5 days
  • Parks and reserves : Masai Mara National Reserve , Lake Nakuru National Park

For incredible wildlife viewing in a classic African setting, you can’t go wrong with a Masai Mara safari. Come here from August to October and you’ll have a chance to see one of the biggest wildlife spectacles on earth: the great migration. On a 4- or 5-day safari you can make an overnight stop at Lake Nakuru. This scenic Rift Valley lake is known for its incredible birdlife and seasonal flocks of flamingos. It is also a great place to see white and black rhinos, Rothschild’s giraffes, hippos and a variety of antelope.

Masai Mara Safaris (3 to 5 Days)

4. Kenya Safari & Beach Time

Sunbeds on the beach

  • Parks and reserves : Masai Mara National Reserve , Tsavo West National Park , Tsavo East National Park , Lake Nakuru National Park , Amboseli National Park

Kenya is the perfect destination for a classic bush-and-beach holiday. You’ll spend a couple of days exploring the world-renowned Masai Mara National Reserve. The open savannah is perfect for quality sightings of lions and cheetahs. If you’re lucky you might even see a hunt. You’ll only need a short stay in the beautiful Lake Nakuru National Park to see rhinos and a variety of other wildlife. To round off the safari, you’ll visit Amboseli National Park for inspiring close-ups with elephants and views of Kilimanjaro, Africa’s tallest mountain. Time permitting, you can add on a few days in Tsavo (East and West) for a true wilderness experience and a chance to see unusual antelope, such as gerenuk and fringe-eared oryx. Finally you’ll head to the coast to spend a few days relaxing at one of Kenya’s idyllic beaches – the perfect way to end a holiday.

Kenya Safari & Beach (6 to 14 Days)

5. Uganda Safari & Gorilla Trekking

Silverback mountain gorilla

  • Parks : Bwindi Impenetrable National Park , Queen Elizabeth National Park

A Uganda gorilla trekking safari is a once-in-a-lifetime experience. Looking into the eyes of a mountain gorilla isn’t only exhilarating, it’s also deeply moving. After an early breakfast you’ll head out with your ranger into the depths of Bwindi Impenetrable National Park, a true jungle wonderland. Following the gorillas’ tracks on slippery forest paths can be challenging, but the reward is an hour in the company of these gentle giants. On a 5-day trip you can either end your tour with a few days at Lake Bunyonyi or Queen Elizabeth National Park. The former is best if you want to wind down from your gorilla trek in a pretty spot that’s ideal for walking, swimming and canoeing. The latter if you want to squeeze in a short classic savannah safari with a chance to see elephants, buffalo and even tree-climbing lions.

Uganda Safari & Gorillas (3 to 5 Days)

6. Gorilla & Chimp Trekking in Rwanda

Mountain gorilla family with silverback

  • Parks : Volcanoes National Park , Nyungwe National Park

Walk in the footsteps of world-renowned primatologist Dian Fossey on a Rwanda gorilla trekking safari. You’ll be staying just outside Volcanoes National Park in the Virunga Mountains. This is where Dian Fossey first habituated gorillas in the 1960s, and it is arguably still the best place in the world to see these gentle giants. Other activities here include golden monkey trekking, hiking to the original gorilla research camp and, for the very adventurous, summiting one of the Virunga volcanoes. On a 5-day trip you can also include a visit to Nyungwe National Park, one of the most beautiful rainforests in East Africa. A suspended canopy walk offers a unique bird’s eye perspective of the forest environment. You’ll have the opportunity to see several of the 13 primate species present in Nyungwe, including chimpanzees.

Rwanda Gorillas & Chimps (3 to 5 Days)

The gift of time

We’ve designed our East Africa fly-in trip to give you more of that most precious thing: time. Using our own fleet of small, smart planes, rather than regular scheduled flights, our SkySafari East Africa means you’ll spend almost a day less travelling. That’s a day more for relaxing on your veranda overlooking the plains, for picnicking out in the bush, for fitting an extra game drive or two.

Fly with us and there’s no needless waiting around or airport tedium. You’ll be driven straight onto runways to board our elegant aircraft, which seat only nine passengers. You’ll sink into luxe white-leather seats with a glass of chilled champagne. You’ll get a greater allowance of luggage and more space to relax. You’ll soar straight to your next wilderness destination, no stop-offs or detours eating into your adventure.

At SkySafari we’re committed to people: our guests, our staff and the communities in which we work.

Super sleeps.

The best safaris are those that put you right where the action is. Which is why we fly you between the Elewana Collection, a handful of unique camps and lodges across Kenya and Tanzania that combine sumptuous style with unrivalled locations and direct access to the wilderness.

At Elewana Tortilis Camp, your makuti-thatched tent will gaze across to Kilimanjaro and Amboseli’s profusion of game. Escarpment-top Elewana Loisaba Tented Camp has views to Mt Kenya, plus opportunities to delve into the surrounding valleys by jeep, bike, horse or camel. Elewana Sand River Masai Mara brings a dash of 1920s glamour to the savannah; better still, its award-winning tents sit by its namesake waterway, perfect for when the Great Migration passes by.

Elewana The Manor is possibly the most sumptuous stop on the safari circuit: its elegant Cape Dutch-styled cottages are perfectly placed for forays into the Ngorongoro Crater. In the Serengeti, we’ll take you to the best spot for the season: the handsome bygone-era tents of Elewana Serengeti Pioneer Camp, in the southern Serengeti, are wonderful when the wildebeest are calving and nearby Lake Magadi is flushed with flamingoes; the sophisticated stilted suites of Elewana Serengeti Migration Camp are the place to watch the annual passing of two million ungulates

Popular East Africa Safari Destinations

safaris in east africa

East Africa is home to some of the world’s most spectacular safari destinations. From the endless plains of the Serengeti to the forests of Rwanda, this region of the world offers abundant wildlife and stunning natural wonders. Here are several of the top countries in East Africa for spectacular safaris:

While East African safaris are possible year-round, many travelers aim for the annual Great Migration in Tanzania and Kenya between July and October.

The dry season from July through October is considered the peak safari season in most parks. Grasslands are less dense, making it easier to see the wildlife. Large herds congregate around dwindling water sources. From July to October, you can witness the Great Migration in Kenya's Masai Mara and Tanzania's Serengeti as wildebeest, zebra, and gazelle move between the countries.

Visiting during the November to June wet season has advantages too. Rains bring the landscape to life with greenery and wildflowers. The climate is also quite comfortable, aside from potential afternoon rainstorms. Ultimately the best time to visit East Africa depends on your safari goals, and we can help you find the perfect time for your trip.

With its sprawling savannas, majestic mountains, and abundant wildlife, East Africa offers seemingly endless options for extraordinary safaris. Here are some of the best places to visit in East Africa on safari :

  • Serengeti National Park, Tanzania: The Serengeti savannas are famous for the Great Migration and are home to the Big Five. Explore the vast plains and river crossings on the ultimate wildlife safari.
  • Masai Mara National Reserve, Kenya: Known for large lion, leopard, and cheetah populations, Masai Mara is a wildlife viewing paradise. Time your visit for the Migration's incredible sightings across the lush landscape.
  • Ngorongoro Crater, Tanzania: The Ngorongoro Crater is a UNESCO site offering remarkable scenery and wildlife density in a unique caldera setting. From cultural villages to surprising landscapes, experience the untouched beauty on safari.
  • Volcanoes National Park, Rwanda: Home to endangered mountain gorillas, Volcanoes National Park offers travelers a chance to trek the forested slopes to observe the surprisingly friendly gorilla families up close.
  • Bwindi Impenetrable Forest, Uganda: The Bwindi Impenetrable Forest is a prime destination for tracking endangered mountain gorillas amidst lush rainforest terrain to spend afternoons watching the playful animals.

From up-close encounters with iconic wildlife to seeing breathtaking natural wonders, East Africa promises unforgettable safari experiences. Here are some of the top things to do in East Africa on safari :

  • See millions of wildebeest and zebra cross the Mara River in Kenya and Serengeti in Tanzania during the Great Migration
  • Trek through dense rainforests to observe gorillas in their natural habitat
  • Explore the Serengeti, Masai Mara, and other reserves on guided drives to spot the Big Five and bountiful wildlife
  • Gain a unique aerial perspective flying over the Serengeti plains during sunrise on a hot-air balloon safari
  • Descend into the massive Ngorongoro Crate for close-up sightings of lions, elephants, rhinos, and more
  • Discover nocturnal wildlife like leopards, bush babies, and hyenas on specialized nighttime game drives
  • Learn about Maasai traditions and way of life when visiting a village community

The diversity of iconic African wildlife you may encounter on an East African safari is truly phenomenal. Each park promises different highlights and concentrations of animals to discover, and here are some of the most notable creatures:

  • Nile crocodiles

An East African safari is a true adventure, so come prepared with proper attire and gear to make the most of your experience . We suggest safari-goers pack the following in addition to one’s typical packing list:

  • Neutral, light-colored clothing
  • Lightweight, waterproof rain jacket
  • Long pants for bush walks
  • Hiking boots or walking shoes
  • Camera with a zoom lens and extra memory cards
  • Insect repellent
  • UV protection, including but not limited to sunscreen, hats, lip balm, and sunglasses

Safaris throughout East Africa are safe.

Countries like Tanzania, Kenya, Uganda, and Rwanda have incredible reputations as premier safari destinations, with wildlife posing little threat when proper precautions are taken. By following the instructions and guidance of your expert game rangers and the park rules, you can safely observe wildlife in their natural habitats.

Petty crimes like pickpocketing or luggage theft can happen but are uncommon during East African safaris within the tourism infrastructure. Simple vigilance in securing valuables and working closely with your guides will minimize any security issues.

Whether you seek the classic savanna wildlife spectacle or prefer going beyond the beaten path, we can help you find the best East African safari itinerary and tailor the perfect trip just for you. Here are some of our most popular safaris to inspire your travels:

  • Embark on the ultimate East African adventure with our Wildlife Wonder: 11-Day Kenya and Tanzania safari, pairing Kenya's renowned Masai Mara with Tanzania's iconic Serengeti for a comprehensive big game experience.
  • Venture beyond the well-trodden safari trail to the hidden wonders of East Africa on our Untouched East Africa: 11-Day Tanzania, Kenya and Uganda journey, combining wildlife, culture and natural beauty in Tanzania, Kenya, and Uganda.

Our Glorious Two-Week Safari: Tanzania, Kenya and Rwanda takes you to the highlights of Tanzania, Kenya, and Rwanda for the ultimate exploration of East Africa's most magnificent wildlife, landscapes, and cultural encounters.

East African Splendour

Destination, classic safari supersights.

At 12 days, the East African Splendour is a shorter version of our 17-day African Splendour Classic Safari . But the marvels we encounter—the Maasai Mara, the Serengeti, and the Ngorongoro Crater—are matchless in their classic African and planetary magnificence. Quintessentially African in their wealth of wildlife and their uniquely stunning landscapes, planetary because their likes are found precisely nowhere else on Earth.

We begin in Hemingways, a serene and leafy hotel in Nairobi’s suburbs, before heading to Sir Richard Branson’s innovative yet tradition-honouring Mahali Mzuri, an ideal outpost for our forays into the river forests and golden plains of the Maasai Mara. Then, based from the soothingly luxe Four Seasons, we delve into the ocean of life that is the Serengeti. Our last stop before heading back to a pleasant pre-flight rest in Nairobi is the Ngorongoro Crater, whose steep walls encase a 100-square mile caldera populated by the full cast of Africa’s glorious animals (and, while ensconced in The Manor at Ngorongoro, we’ll visit nearby Lake Manyara, which many consider Africa’s most comely lake, and whose lyric flight of flamingos you may remember from Out of Africa).

The creation was an act of mercy. William Blake
  •   The Serengeti: “The light is dazzling, the air delectable; the magic of the American prairie here blends with the other magic of the animals as they existed before man,” wrote the great British litterateur Cyril Connolly.
  • The Maasai Mara, the northern, more exuberantly foliated reaches of the vast Maasai Mara-Serengeti ecosystem, the world’s greatest assemblage of free-roaming animals, a place where, Isak Dinesen wrote, “you felt the night-air soft and deep and pregnant with benediction.”
  • Once a towering volcano, a rival of lordly Kilimanjaro, the Ngorongoro Crater is a natural masterpiece that brings to mind Arthur Conan Doyle’s The Lost World.
  • And last and of course, the constant, touchdown to takeoff presence of a Micato Safari Director. backed up by our 24-hour Concierge Service and our in-country and international staff.

En route to Kenya and its capital city, Nairobi.

We arrive in Nairobi and Hemingways , a quietly ravishing haven for lovers of old-style panache mixed with modern amenities and great cuisine, wonderfully set in the lush suburb of Karen.

We fly west from Nairobi to the Maasai Mara, the northern, more verdant section of the single most salubrious wildlife habitat on this or any known planet, the Serengeti-Maasai Mara ecosystem. Game drives in the Mara are especially fruitful….Our Mara headquarters is Sir Richard Branson’s Mahali Mzuri , whose innovatively designed, yet very African tents “resemble the tents of our youth like a Gulfstream G650 resembles a Piper Cub,” as we said a while back. Mzuri is auspiciously set next to one of the Mara’s prime migration pathways.

Now— these are thrilling safari words!— into the Serengeti, amazing in its enormity, its almost infinite skies and long, golden reaches, its million-year quiet. We’ll make far-ranging game drives on the great plain and in its riverine forests, based from the stunningly deluxe Four Seasons Safari Lodge Serengeti , set on rocky bluffs, giving us vast, endlessly stimulating views.

A typically spectacular flight and pleasant drive deliver us to The Manor at Ngorongoro , a marvelous 10-cottage, 20-suite retreat set within a 1500- acre Arabica coffee estate adjacent to the Ngorongoro Conservation Area . Those of us who have travelled in South Africa will recognize the Manor’s elegant Cape Dutch style; those who haven’t will simply be charmed. Our three nights at the Manor are a rare idyll.

We’ll enjoy a restful afternoon (or a very active one; the Manor offers horsebacking, mountain biking, swimming in the Manor’s pool, and estate walks, among other enjoyments), before a classic high tea and dinner in the private dining room or wine cellar.

And the next day we visit one of the earth’s natural masterpieces. We’ve got a lot of affection for Ngorongoro. Here’s the essence of the crater’s tremendous charisma: 25,000 or so large and very viewable mammals— from apex predators to galumphing hippos— inhabit the crater’s 100-square-mile floor, and zigzagging up the old volcano’s forested wall to its rim, and gazing for the first or fifth time at the lush lands and their inhabitants in the crater below, is a great moment in any traveller’s life.

We’ll descend to the crater and excitedly roam from morning to afternoon, stopping at mid-day for a charmingly luxurious bush lunch, before heading back to a serene evening at the Manor.

Now we encounter Lake Manyara . Africa is blessed with epic lakes (Tanganyika is the world’s second deepest; all the Rift Lakes are gigantic stunners), but many, including Ernest Hemingway, consider the smaller gem of Lake Manyara— with its diamond-white alkali rim, its million or so coral-coloured flamingos, and the deep sapphire waters at its centre— the loveliest of all. After a relaxed (or active) morning at the Manor, we’ll embark on a fine afternoon of game viewing around the lake (many tree-climbing lions frequent Manyara’s Africa-embodying scrublands, mahogany forests, and bird-thronged marshlands). And after cocktails and canapés in the bush, we head back to the Manor for a final night before regretfully getting ready to head home.

After flying back to Nairobi, we’ll relax in full service, meals-included day rooms at the Fairmont Norfolk Hotel or the Four Points by Sheraton at the Nairobi Airport, have a quiet dinner, and head out to Jomo Kenyatta Airport for our late evening flights home, where we arrive, tired but exalted, on Day 12 of this mightily splendid safari.

Where to Encounter the Endangered mountain gorillas?

Well, Mountain gorillas are found only in 3 countries that is Uganda the pearl of Africa, Rwanda the land of a thousand hills and DRCongo all thriving in Democratic Republic of Congo. In Uganda, you will be able to encounter gorillas in 2 destinations including Mgahinga gorilla national park which harbors only 1 Gorilla family that has been habituated for trekking. Another destination is Bwindi impenetrable national park that is a home to the population of the endangered mountain gorillas thriving with over 20 habituated gorilla families in 4 sectors of Rushaga, Buhoma, Nkuringo and Ruhija. Gorilla trekking in Uganda as of 2021 costs $700 for foreign Nonresidents, $600 for Foreign Residents and Ugandan shilling 250,000 for East African citizens. In Rwanda, Mountain Gorillas are found in one destination, Volcanoes national Park and a permit to trek this endangered creatures costs $1,500. Finally, in DRCongo, Mountain gorillas are found in Virunga national park. A permit to trek gorillas in Virunga national park goes for $400 during high season and $200 for low season. Whichever destination you choose for gorilla trekking, the experience is rewarding and memorable. Keep it in Mind that gorilla trekking lasts for only 1 hour in close vicinity of these primates but the forest walk as you search for these gorillas can last from a few minutes to several hours depending on movement of these gorillas since they always roam the forest in search of food. The duration in the forest can as well depend on the speed used by trekkers since it always has to be in favor of the slowest person in the group. In case you will to spend more time with gorillas, there is yet a fascinating whole 4 hours experience with the mountain gorillas and the process known as Gorilla Habituation experience and it is done only in Bwindi impenetrable national park in Rushaga sector and it costs $1500 per person.

East Africa Safaris Tours

East Africa safaris tours are designed to take tourists on a safari to at least two or more East African countries in just one safari. Amongst the countries to explore while on East Africa safaris tours include Uganda the pearl of Africa, Rwanda the land of a thousand hills, Tanzania , Kenya and Congo . Each of these countries in east Africa has its own unique and fascinating tourist attractions ranging from primate species such as Gorillas, chimpanzees, Golden monkeys, baboons, monkeys, mammal such as  Big 5 game, bird species, reptiles, flora species, and the local community members. Several travelers on an east African safari tour usually choose to use an East African tourist visa though it includes only 3 destinations which include Kenya, Uganda & Rwanda. This implies that to enter into Tanzania, and Congo, travelers must obtain Tanzania and Congo tourist visas respectively.

Let’s have a look at the best East Africa safaris tours destinations

As mentioned above, a safari is valid to be called an East Africa safari only if it covers at least 2 destinations in East Africa.

Tanzania safaris tours: Tanzania is one of the best destinations to visit while on East Africa safari tour due to existence of several tourist attractions which include several national parks such as Serengeti national park that is the most visited national park that harbors the Wildebeests. Several travelers on an East Africa safari tour visit Serengeti national park in order to witness the migration of the Wildebeests which seasonally migrate between two national parks of Serengeti national park in Tanzania and Masai Mara national reserve in Kenya. Apart from Serengeti national park, Tanzania has other several national parks that are best destinations for wildlife viewing safaris and these include Lake Manyara national park which is also frequently visited by tourists in order to have a glance at the tree climbing lions. This can be joined with a visit to Queen Elizabeth national park in Uganda to view more tree climbing lions since these unique species are only found in two beautiful countries in East Africa and that is Tanzania and Uganda. There is also a famous park known as Tarangire national park for wildlife viewing safaris in Tanzania, the Ngorongoro conservation area, Mount Kilimanjaro national park, Arusha national park, Lake Natron and many more national game reserves which include Selous game reserve, Uwanda game reserve among others. A safari to Tanzania opens the door to game drive/ wildlife viewing safaris, birding safaris, boat cruise safaris, nature walks, cultural safaris, hot air balloon safaris, beach safaris etc.

Wildebeest in Serengeti

Kenya safaris tours: Like Serengeti national park in Tanzania , Kenya also got the magical Masai Mara national reserve best known for harboring the largest population of wildlife species including the wildebeest that are seen on a migration via Mara River to and from Serengeti national park in Tanzania. This implies that an East Africa safari tour to Serengeti national park and Masai Mara national reserve in Kenya is one of the best east Africa safaris that enables tourists to watch the wildebeest on a migration in the two countries. Other than Masai Mara, Kenya has other plenty tourist destinations which include Lake Nakuru national park famous for harboring flamingos and other beautiful water birds. A Kenya safari also takes travelers to Tsavo national park both Tsavo East and Tsavo west national parks, Hell’s Gate national park, Amboseli national park, Samburu national park, Mt. Elgon national park and many more all with unique attractions of fauna and flora. Kenya is also a best destination for wildlife viewing safaris, birding adventures, Mountain hiking safaris, nature walk, cultural tours, swimming and boat cruise safaris among others. A combined East African safari to Kenya and Tanzania can easily be tailored since the two countries are close to one another with close national parks such as Masai Mara and Serengeti that are separated by Mara River. Grab your east Africa wildlife safari to Masai Mara and Serengeti national park to enjoy unbeatable expedition in east Africa.

Giraffes in Masai Mara National Park - Kenya

Uganda safaris tours: An East Africa safari without Uganda is incomplete because there is a whole lot of things to see with in this landlocked country known as Uganda the pearl of Africa. This implies that Uganda is the most beautiful destination that should never be left out while on a tour to east Africa. A safari to Uganda enables tourists to visit the most powerful waterfall known as Murchison falls (the devil’s Cauldron) which is situated in the oldest and largest national park in Uganda that also harbors the big 5 games as long as tourists visit Ziwa Rhino sanctuary along the way to or from Murchison falls national park. There is yet an encounter with the rare and endangered primate species which is none other than Mountain gorillas in Bwindi impenetrable national park. It’s in record that Uganda harbors the largest population of endangered mountain gorillas with more than a half of the remaining gorillas surviving in Bwindi impenetrable national park. There is also one gorilla family in Mgahinga national park. The one and only Nyakagezi gorilla family. Trekking mountain gorillas has always been the most fascinating and adventurous experience in the pearl of Africa. The remaining population of endangered mountain gorillas is found in Volcanoes national park in Rwanda and in Virunga national park with in Congo so one is in position to enjoy gorilla trekking safari in East Africa with in 3 destinations including Uganda, Rwanda and Congo. There is yet another adventurous activity of chimpanzee trekking which is carried out in Kibale forest national park one of the best primate destinations in Uganda with 13 primate species. Other chimpanzees in Uganda are trekked in Budongo forest in Murchison falls national park, Kyambura gorge & Kalinzu forest of queen Elizabeth national park,  and Ngamba chimpanzee sanctuary. The savanna national parks of Uganda are also the best destinations for wildlife viewing safari and these include the most beautiful queen Elizabeth national park which is the home to the tree climbing lions and the stunning kazinga channel that harbors a huge populations of Hippos. Lake Mburo national park, the best destination for walking safaris in Uganda, Semliki national reserve the best destination for the nature walks to visit the sempaya hot springs and cruise along Lake Albert. Hike some of the beautiful mountains including Rwenzori Mountains, Mt. elgon, and many more. There are many other tourist attractions in Uganda including the cultural centers such as Bigo bya mugyenyi, Kasubi tombs, Kabaka’s palace, Nakayima tree, Nyero rock paintings, and many more. Uganda is also the best destination for religious tours where tourists are in position to explore Gadhafi mosque, Lubaga cathedral, Namirembe church, Namugongo martyrs shrines and many more. In general Uganda offers travelers with Primate viewing safaris (Gorilla trekking safaris, gorilla habituation experience, chimpanzee trekking safaris, and Golden monkey tracking safaris), birding safaris, cultural tours, wildlife viewing safaris, mountaineering safaris, walking safaris, and many more.

Gorillas in Bwindi Impenetrable National Park - Uganda

Rwanda safaris tours: Rwanda is also a beautiful country to explore while on an east Africa safari. Rwanda is termed as a land of a thousand hills due to plenty thrilling hills with beautiful terraces. Rwanda is yet amongst the destinations visited by travelers on a safari to east Africa due to its beautiful attractions which include national parks like Volcanoes national park that is situated within Virunga massif that is well known for harboring the endangered mountain gorillas and the volcanic mountains. In Rwanda, it’s only in volcanoes national park where tourists trek the endangered mountain gorillas with other mountain gorillas found in Congo and Uganda. Another beautiful national park to visit in Rwanda is Nyungwe forest national park which harbors 13 species of primates including Chimpanzees, monkeys, baboons and many other primates. A fascinating canopy walk is also another golden opportunity never to miss while on an east Africa safari and it’s only enjoyed in Nyungwe forest national park Rwanda. For thrilling game drive adventures in Rwanda , visit Akagera national park for game drive safaris in the savanna vegetation cover and boat cruise along Lake Ihema. Apart from National park, Rwanda is also frequently visited by travelers who wish to know the history of Rwanda, visit the genocide memorial sites where thousands of Rwandese were murdered in cold blood. Lake Kivu is also a beautiful lake to visit while on Rwanda safari due to its stunning views of the surrounding including the view of Mount Nyiragongo which is situated in Congo with in virunga massif and many more. In general, there are several safaris in Rwanda such as Gorilla trekking safaris, chimpanzee trekking safaris, Golden monkey tracking safaris, canopy walk, exploration of Lake Kivu, volcanoes hiking safaris, Dian Fossey hiking safari, nature walking safaris, birding safaris, cultural tours to Ibyiwacu cultural village etc.

Volcanoes National Park - Rwanda

The best time for East Africa safari tour

The best time to have an east African safari depends on the activities one intends to do otherwise a safari to east Africa can be done at any given period of time all year round but the best months to visit the parks in east Africa is during the dry months when the parks are dry, accommodations are dry and the sighting of the wildlife is easy.

For instance, the dry months are the best seasons for primate viewing safaris, game viewing safaris, walking safaris, hiking safaris and visiting the beaches in East Africa. In these months, the vegetation cover is minimal for easy sighting of the wildlife and easy trailing through during the hiking and trekking safaris while the rainy months are the best months for birders to visit East Africa since most of the bird species reproduce in rainy months and also visit the forest due to existence of plenty food to eat.

On the other hand, travelers who wish to watch the wildebeests on migration, I recommend to visit east Africa during the months of July, August, September, October, and November which is the season for the Wildebeests to migrate through Mara River.

Conclusion : Book your East Africa safari tour to either two countries within an East African region or you may even book a safari that covers all the 5 countries which include Uganda, Rwanda, Kenya, Tanzania, and Congo. Focus East Africa Tours is always ready to tailor for you a desirable Itinerary that suites the destinations you intend to visit.

The setting, tent, staff, and food were a 10 out of 10. We are already discussing and return trip and look forward to working with Ester, Robert, and the rest of the Fika team again!

This trip has been a dream trip of mine, and the perfect organisation of Fika safari’s even exceeded all my expectations of the trip! We did a one week safari in Kenya, where we visited Masai Mara and Naivasha. Everything was perfectly organised! Ester and Robert were super helpul in their communication, and making sure that we got our dream safari for the budget we had!

We are now on safari with Fika. We really are very happy with our guide Nambuki. He knows everything and makes it fun on the road. If we are ever going to do another safari we would choose back for Fika and Nambuki. Really very happy! We have been to very beautiful places and he really can find and see the animals close!!

Robert made our honeymoon in Kenya and Tanzania a dream come true!. I highly recommend it in all its services. Each trip is tailor made for specific needs. A private and unique service. If I ever return to Africa would be definitively with Fika.

Fika organized the perfect safari holiday for us to Kenya. Everything was well planned out without having to worry about anything and merely enjoy the nature and wildlife. Also all the accomodations were very well chosen and the guide was very professional and familiar at the same time. I would recommend without any doubt.

Julius is a great guide, very professional and he knows really well the park. Definitely worth it and I can 100% recommend a tour with them. They're my go to guys for a Safari in Kenya! Will do it again for sure!

Pierpaolo ITALY ★★★★★

I went for a game drive with them at the Nairobi National Park on 10th October 2020. It was my first game drive and the experience was unforgettable. Julius and the team at Campo are knowledgeable, professional and resourceful. I saw my first lion hunt! I was so excited. We also had picnic breakfast at the Kingfisher picnic site and lunch at a nearby hotel with a view of the park where we also enjoyed an afternoon swim. Campo dropped us back to the City Centre at 5. Most enjoyable daytime excursion! I would not hesitate to recommend them. Can't wait for my next trip.

What our Clients say

I am thrilled with all my photos and put the best ones into photo books. I now enjoy showing these to my friends who are all envious of the fantastic holiday I had! Thank you for being such an excellent guide. Of all the wonderful scenery, birds, mammals and plants I saw, the shots of the African sunset still bring a tear of joy to my eyes. I never expected to get that! I think the whole holiday exceeded my expectations even the amazing thunderstorms that we experienced. I hope to return again one day!

Kate & Richard

We are back home in a rather damp dark England and wishing we were back in Kenyan sunshine. We just want to say a big "Thank you" to you and your team for such a marvelous trip. Everything was perfect from the moment Kenneth picked us up until we said "goodbye to Peter at the airport. The arrangements you made, the camps, the weather, and the animals we saw could not have been bettered. Thank you very much for all the trouble you took for us. We really hope it will not be our last visit!

We had THE most wonderful holiday. Thank you, to you, and your team for all your organizing. Thank you for the goodie bag on arrival. It was lovely for us both not to have to think about a thing - and to have everything taken care of so expertly. All in all a dream holiday.......and we saw Cheetah and her cubs and leopard!! Thank you again. Hopefully it won't be too long before we can come again.

Flooding in a Kenyan Natural Reserve Forces Tourist Evacuation

The heavy rains that pounded East Africa for weeks, killing hundreds, have spilled into the Masai Mara, one of Africa’s greatest wildlife national reserves.

An aerial view of a flooded nature reserve.

By Mohamed Ahmed and Emma Bubola

Mohamed Ahmed reported from Mombasa, Kenya, and Emma Bubola from London.

Devastating floods that have killed hundreds of people and displaced tens of thousands more in East Africa are now inundating parts of the Masai Mara, one of Africa’s greatest wildlife national reserves.

On Wednesday, the Telek River broke its banks and overflowed into parts of the natural reserve, flooding many tourist camps. A spokesman for the Kenyan Red Cross, Munir Ahmed, said that more than 90 people have been evacuated, some by helicopter. Others fled through the water.

“The situation in Masai Mara is so bad,” said Daniel Ikayo, the owner of a safari company that operates there. “There is water everywhere.”

The floods in the reserve have added to the heavy damage to key economic resources in Kenya, including livestock, crops and infrastructure.

“We are seeing a disaster unfold,” said Bryan Adkins, who heads a trust that helps protect the Kijabe forest, which has also been decimated by the floods.

Only part of Masai Mara has been affected, said Mohammed Hersi, director of a safari company and the former chairman of the Kenya tourism federation. But Alfred Mutua, the country’s tourism minister, warned on Wednesday that all hotels and camps near rivers and within national parks and reserves should prepare for potential evacuation in case rivers overflow.

Kenya’s long rainy season, which runs from April until June, is not a prime time for tourism, but those who are there now have found their plans upended. “People don’t want to come here to drive around in a lake,” Mr. Adkins said.

The Telek River lies across the “ Great Migration ” route from the Serengeti in Tanzania to the Masai Mara, and from July to October, over a million wildebeests and zebras cross over — an event that attracts thousands of tourists from all over the world.

On Monday, flash floods sent a deluge of muddy water over an area in the Rift Valley region in southern Kenya, killing at least 45 people, sweeping away houses and damaging roads. In total, 179 people have died in Kenya since the flooding begun, and many more have been killed across the whole of East Africa. The floods were particularly deadly in neighboring Tanzania.

With the rains expected to continue, Kenya’s presidential office on Wednesday issued an evacuation order to people residing in risk areas — near, for instance, rivers, dams and reservoirs — to evacuate within 48 hours. Over 30,000 people have already been displaced.

Mr. Ahmed, of the Red Cross, said that in total, 45 roads and over 370 water sources had been destroyed, and over 600 businesses and 35,000 acres of crops affected. People who lived off small businesses, like avocado farms or tractor businesses, lost their livelihoods, local residents said.

What the final economic impact of this year’s inundations might be is unclear, but according to a recent report by the African Climate Foundation , climate-change-related events like floods and droughts led to losses of 3 to 5 percent of the country’s gross domestic product from 2010 to 2020.

According to the report, the frequency and intensity of such events is likely to increase.

Forecasters with the Kenya meteorological department warned on Wednesday about “a surge in rainfall intensity across multiple regions of the country from Thursday through the weekend.”

Judson Jones contributed reporting from New York.

Kenya floods: tourists evacuated from Maasai Mara after river bursts banks

Kenya Red Cross rescues more than 90 people from hotels and lodges as heavy rainfall continues

Scores of tourists have been evacuated by air from Kenya’s Maasai Mara national reserve after more than a dozen hotels, lodges and camps were flooded as heavy rains battered the country.

Tourist accommodation facilities were submerged after a river in the Maasai Mara broke its banks on Wednesday morning. The reserve, in south-west Kenya , is a popular tourist destination because it features the annual wildebeest migration from the Serengeti in Tanzania.

The Kenya Red Cross said it rescued more than 90 people. The Narok county government said it deployed two helicopters to carry out evacuations in the expansive conservation area.

More than 170 people have died across Kenya since mid-March when the rainy season started, causing flooding, landslides and destroying infrastructure. The Meteorological Department said more rain was expected this week.

Brown flood waters cover a bridge

On Wednesday, three main roads in the capital, Nairobi, were temporarily closed due to flooding. The Kenya Red Cross rescued 11 people from a residential area – Kitengela – in the outskirts of Nairobi after their homes flooded overnight.

On Monday, a river broke through a clogged tunnel in the Mai Mahiu area in western Kenya, sweeping away houses and damaging roads. It left 48 people dead and more than 80 others missing.

Search and rescue operations across Mai Mahiu continue. On Tuesday the president, William Ruto, ordered the military to join in the search. Local people say rescue efforts have been slow due to a lack of equipment to dig through the debris.

The government has urged people living in flood-prone areas to evacuate or be moved forcefully as water levels in two hydroelectric dams have risen to a “historic high”.
