Rail journeys to remember

The most scenic rail routes

Named by National Geographic as one of the “World’s Greatest Trips”, Rocky Mountaineer offers guests the chance to combine ocean and rail routes to create their dream journey.

Of Rocky Mountaineer’s three routes, none is more popular or legendary than the “First Passage to the West” railway line. Uniting Canada’s East and West, the famous route takes guests through the magnificent Canadian Rockies, the iconic Spiral Tunnels and the historic Craigellachie – where the final spike on the Canadian Pacific Railway was placed.

The only running passenger service on the historic “First Passage to the West” route, Rocky Mountaineer passes by spectacular mountains, lush forests and mirror-like lakes, offering guests views unreachable by any other form of transportation.

Pass over the iconic Cisco Crossing, marvel at the unique Black Canyon with its towering shale wall, hear legends of witches and people turned to stone as you glide past the Hoodoos, gaze at the turquoise waters of the Columbian River’s Kinbasket Lake and be awed by the scale of Castle Mountain, standing at over 9,000ft.

Running from Vancouver to Banff, via Kamloops and Lake Louise, the “First Passage to the West” combines the very best city, ocean and mountain scenes, with a fascinating history, world-class cuisine and exceptional service.

On today's journey you will see dramatic changes in scenery, from the lush green fields of the Fraser Valley, through forests and winding river canyons surrounded by the peaks of the Coast and Cascade Mountains, to the desert-like environment of the BC Interior. Highlights include the rushing waters of Hell's Gate in the Fraser Canyon and the steep slopes and rock sheds along the Thompson River. Your day concludes as the Rocky Mountaineer travels along the shores of Kamloops Lake into Kamloops between 6:00pm and 7:30pm PT. Once again you will see a spectacular array of scenery as you travel across ranchlands, along rocky lakeshores, over high mountain passes and through the remarkable tunnels that form part of the rich rail history of the Canadian Rockies. Today's highlights include Craigellachie, where the last spike of the Canadian Pacific Railway was driven, the climb over Rogers Pass, Kicking Horse Canyon, the Spiral Tunnels and, of course, the glaciers and snow-capped peaks of the Canadian Rockies. Your rail journey ends this evening upon arrival in Banff, between 7:00pm and 8:30pm MT.

Cruise the Inside Passage, Alaska

The fabled Inside Passage is one of the most scenic sea-lanes in the world, and one of the few where deep-draft vessels can sail close to steep mountain walls. The scenery is unbelievable, with forests in a hundred shades of green, tumbling turquoise glaciers, and evocative towns loaded with history, culture and adventure. With most of Southeast Alaska accessible only by boat or plane, the Inside Passage is a lifeline to the outside world.

Juneau, Alaska

Juneau is the capital of Alaska perched on a hillside where the historical downtown buildings give it a somewhat frontier feel. 4000ft mountains create a dramatic backdrop to the city, beyond which lies the Juneau Icefield from which 30 glaciers flow, the most famous being the Mendenhall Glacier

Skagway, Alaska

Some of the aspiring Klondike gold rushers who made it to Skagway took a look at the 500-mile journey that still lay ahead of them and decided a change of profession was in order. So many of them set up shops as provisioners that Skagway was the largest city in Alaska by the end of the 19th century. Booms fade and dreams move on, but the glory days still reverberate through the town. Take a ride on the Take a trip on the White Pass & Yukon Railway or ride up the Klondike Highway which will take you to places where you can roll up your sleeves and do some prospecting of your own.

Glacier Bay (scenic cruising), Alaska

Glacier Bay has more actively calving tidewater glaciers than anyplace else in the world. Enjoy scenic cruising and see a UNESCO World Heritage Site that protects a unique ecosystem of plants and animals living in concert with an ever-changing glacial landscape.

Your questions answered.

Find out what is included in your trip and have all your questions answered. We are here to help.

What’s Included

Frequently asked questions, can i customize this trip.

Your trip can be as rich as you’d like, and completely arranged around your interests and needs. The greatest benefit of working with us is our local knowledge. You can customize your trip and decide what you’d like to see and do.

If your trip is a special occasion, we’ll make sure it is unforgettable. Or if you’re traveling with a group, we’ll take care of the logistics so you can share time together stress-free.

Can I modify the trip's length by spending more or less time at certain locations?

Absolutely! We personalize all our clients’ trips to fit their exact tastes and needs. You can add days at locations that you’d like to explore and spend more time at. Or leave out certain areas that don’t interest you as much. Discuss your travel goals with our Vacation Advisors who make sure that your trip fits your needs and budget.

Where do I stay on my trip?

We partner with many hotels across the country that offer a variety of service levels and unique experiences. Choosing a hotel is based on local availability and personal preference, and our Insiders will help you find the perfect place to rest your head so that you can have the best experience possible.

On some trips, I see hotels referred to as Comfort, Superior, and Deluxe. What is that?

On some of our trips, you’ll see that we categorize our hotel rooms by Comfort, Superior and Deluxe class, which generally translates into the traditional 3-, 4- or 5-star designation (equivalent to Best Western, Sheraton and Fairmont). However, sometimes we use the same hotel for more than one category and distinguish the room by size, floor level or view.

Our Comfort Level hotels include our favorite 3 star hotels, in great locations and with excellent service.

Our Superior Level hotels provide amazing value for clients wanting something more upscale but not at the price of a top-end 5 star resort. Superior level hotels are some of our favorites because of the character and unique charm that you won't find at the average chain hotel.

In Deluxe Level hotels, it's likely you'll be staying at one of the iconic Canadian Fairmont Hotels in a room with a view. Built for the Canadian Pacific Railway in the early 20th century, these hotels are luxurious and full of history – ensuring an experience you'll never forget.

How much does my trip cost?

All our trips are personalized to fit our clients’ schedule and budget. The price of your trip generally depends on the travel season, train service, accommodations, and the sightseeing tours you take. When you request a quote you’ll be provided with the detailed information you need

What is the Rocky Mountaineer experience like?

Rocky Mountaineer operates daylight touring trains, which travel along three of the most spectacular routes in Western Canada. You’ll enjoy onboard commentary, award winning service, and incredible food.

What are the differences between SilverLeaf and GoldLeaf service on the Rocky Mountaineer train?

There are a few differences between SilverLeaf and GoldLeaf service.

In SilverLeaf, you travel in a single-level dome car with oversized windows and are served meals at your seat. In GoldLeaf, you travel in a bi-level dome car, which features comfortable seating on the upper level and a dining area on the lower level. GoldLeaf coaches are taller, so you can see above the treeline.

GoldLeaf also includes access to an exclusive outdoor viewing platform. In SilverLeaf, there is a small viewing area between train cars.

What is the small ship cruise experience like?

Small ship cruises are much more flexible than a typical large ship cruise - your onboard team will decide on the best adventures of the day based on weather, wildlife sightings, and the interests of the group. The agile vessels are able to access secluded inlets, bays, and channels where your chances of seeing wildlife are so much better.

What are the accommodations like on a small ship cruise?

Accommodations range from comfortable private cabins with ensuite bathrooms and picture windows, to full suites. These well appointed ships feature delicious cuisine, common lounges for mingling and evening presentations, as well as kayak launch docks for the days of adventure ahead.

What clothing should I pack for the Essential Rockies with Alaska Cruise trip?

We recommend bringing a range of layers for this trip. Summers are mild in Southeast Alaska (average temperatures: 55-56 degrees F / 12-18 degrees C) and slightly warmer in the Canadian Rockies (average temperatures: 68-77 degrees F / 20-25 degrees C). It can be cooler close to the water or up in the mountains, so a fleece pullover and rain jacket are must-haves. Packing a pair of waterproof boots and some comfortable walking shoes is highly recommended.

What meals are included on Rocky Mountaineer and the cruise, and can dietary restrictions be accommodated?

When travelling on Rocky Mountaineer, you enjoy breakfast and lunch onboard the train. The seasonal menu varies by rail route and day. The cuisine is inspired by the areas the train passes through. Complimentary snacks, alcoholic and non-alcoholic beverages are served each day.

All meals (breakfast, lunch, dinner) and snacks are included on your small ship cruise. The onboard chefs create fresh, sustainable meals from locally sourced ingredients.

Dietary requirements, food allergies and other preferences can be accommodated with advance notice. Please let your Vacation Advisor know of any dietary needs at the time of booking.

Add a Luxury Train to a Cruise for a Rail and Sail Vacation

If a weeklong cruise isn’t enough, why not combine it with a luxury train adventure and create the trip of a lifetime.

This isn’t a new concept. Rail-and-sail vacations have been quietly available for years. When combined with a cruise, a pre- or post-cruise train trip offers a chance to explore territory that simply can’t be seen from a cruise ship. Or even a car. Travel overnight or try a day trip for a truly unique experience.

Take a Luxury Train Trip Before or After Your Cruise

In This Post...

Travel by train past snowcapped mountains and sleepy picturesque villages while nestled in your luxurious accommodations. Settle into a plush lounge chair in a vintage glass-domed observation car. Indulge your palate with fine dining, complimentary cocktails and meet other train enthusiasts bound for a new experience.

If this sounds intriguing, here are some of the most popular rail trips around the world to enhance your cruise vacation.

Explore the Canadian Rockies with Rocky Mountaineer

If a visit to Alaska is on your wish-list, chances are you’ve thought about an Alaska cruise. This means one of three options:  a northbound or southbound cruise between Anchorage and Seattle or Vancouver. Or an Inside Passage cruise round-trip from either Seattle or Vancouver.

Luxury train Rocky Mountaineer at Columbia Icefield in British Columbia

Stay longer and explore more. Combine an Alaska cruise with a luxury train ride with Rocky Mountaineer. Ride the rails deep into the awe-inspiring Canadian Rocky Mountains.

The gleaming navy and gold rail cars slowly meander past some of the most spectacular scenery in the world. Board the Rocky Mountaineer train in Vancouver for a choice of a simple one- to an amazing 14-night luxury train adventure. With four train routes to choose, there are dozens of post- or pre-cruise itineraries.

Luxury train Rocky Mountaineer upper level in Gold Leaf class.

Onboard Rocky Mountaineer

Rocky Mountaineer offers two classes of service; GoldLeaf or SilverLeaf. As someone who’s tried both classes, if your budget allows, go with GoldLeaf. As you travel through the Canadian Rockies, you’ll spend the overnight in world-famous hotels, not on the train. In the early morning, re-board your train and travel deeper into the mountains through areas not reachable by car. A full breakfast is served as the train leaves the station.

The train rarely exceeds 35 m.p.h. allowing passengers in GoldLeaf ton step outside onto an old-fashioned roomy outdoor platform. Great for taking photos and spotting wildlife. Those in SilverLeaf have an a very small outside area, just enough room for two or three guests at a time.

For example, embark on the seven-night round-trip rail journey from Vancouver and visit the charming city of Kamloops, then onto Banff, the Columbia Icefield, gaze across sparkling Lake Louise and spend time wandering the ski mecca of Banff.

See More of Alaska Onboard the Historic Alaska Railroad

Speaking of Alaska, there’s no better way to begin or end your Alaska cruise than to ride the Alaska Railroad. To do this, you’ll need to plan either a northbound or southbound cross-gulf Alaska cruise. These unique cruises embark or disembarking in the port towns of Whittier or Seward.

View of Denali from the Alaska Railroad train car

From either port, it’s a short jaunt from your ship to the train. In fact, some cruise lines include a ride on the Alaska Railroad with their cruise-tour packages.

Similar to Rocky Mountaineer, there are two classes of service on the Alaska Railroad; Adventure Class for the budget-minded or Goldstar Service. Goldstar Service operates much the same as its Canadian cousin with spacious leather/fabric seats upstairs and full-service dining downstairs.

alaska_railroad_goldstar_seats

Conversely, cruise passengers can begin an Alaska tour in Fairbanks and board the Alaska Railroad for the ride south all the way to Seward or Whittier. Spend a few days in Denali National Park, a night in rustic Talkeetna, and a couple of days in cosmopolitan Anchorage.

Then re-board the train to reach your embarkation port for your southbound cruise. Same is possible in reverse for a northbound cross-gulf cruise from Seattle or Vancouver.

Down to the Delta

Not a luxury train, Amtrak City of New Orleans train ride is special.

If a river cruise in the United States is on your to-do list, hop aboard an authentic paddle wheeler and ply the Mississippi River. You can step back in time on a severn-night cruise between New Orleans and Memphis.

Try a round-trip Mississippi river cruise from New Orleans or choose from a variety of itineraries as long as they include Memphis or New Orleans. A Mississippi River cruise combines history, regional cuisine and an antebellum experience.

For more southern charm, design your rail and sail vacation with a ride aboard Amtrak’s famous City of New Orleans train . While not actually a luxury train, the City of New Orleans more than makes up for it in history and nostalgia. This legendary train route runs between the Big Easy and Chicago with Memphis in the middle.

Meet fellow train enthusiasts in the Sightseer Lounge car or in the dining car. As you roll past “houses, farms and fields” it’s easy to remember singer/songwriter Steve Goodman’s City of New Orleans song. Try to get the song out of your head as you travel past fields of wheat, corn and snowy cotton gently waving in the wind.

Whether you choose to ride the City of New Orleans before or after your Mississippi river cruise, this one-night train journey offers tranquil scenery and a glimpse of rural America that can only be viewed from a train.

Across Canada by Train on VIA Rail Canadian

On my Canada and New England and Alaska cruises, I’ve met rail and sail passengers who ended their cruise with a cross-Canada train trip. With convenient departures from Vancouver or Toronto, it’s easy to begin a luxury train ride aboard the Canadian on Canada’s ViaRail train network. A really great idea if you have the time and money.

ViaRail’s most famous four-day route winds its way in either direction between Toronto and Vancouver. If you want to go coast-to-coast, you’ll have to connect in Toronto to Montreal on a day train. Then continue on a one-night ride to Halifax, in Nova Scotia.

Romance, Mystery and Agatha Christie

Mention the Orient Express and it usually conjures up visions of intrigue along the rails in foreign lands. A resurgence and new affordability of luxury train travel, you can experience an adventure that was once available only to the rich and famous.

Venice Simplon Orient Express in Venice Italy

Add the Venice Simplon-Orient-Express onto a Mediterranean cruise from Venice. Board or depart from Berlin or Budapest. Add a London departure after a transatlantic crossing to England. The Venice Simplon-Orient-Express is the epitome of a rail and sail combination.

Travel back in time and journey across Europe in your cozy bedroom in original 1920’s carriages. The train runs in both directions (seasonally, from March to November), so you can embark on your journey before or after your cruise.

If you’d like a very special finale to your Mediterranean cruise, board the vintage train in Venice. Embark on a five-day journey across Europe, an adventure that includes two nights in Budapest.

Then mainline from Budapest to Paris and, after crossing the Channel, board the luxury British Pullman train for a short jaunt into London…or vice versa. This itinerary could be the most once-in-a-lifetime rail adventure aboard one of the world’s most famous trains.

Train Travel Down Under

luxury train The Ghan in Australia

Australia offers so much more than can be seen while on a cruise. No one should fly all the way to Australia for a one- or two-week cruise. If you’re going the distance, consider adding on one of two luxurious cross-continent train trips to your itinerary.

Complete your visit to Sydney with a first-class 3-night journey aboard the historic Indian Pacific. Travel some 2,700 miles between Sydney and Perth in the comfort of your own cabin. Along the route you’ll cross the famous Nullarbor Palin. At nearly 300 miles in length, brags the longest stretch of straight track in the world.

Australia’s other historic luxury train, the Ghan , runs between Adelaide in the south to northern Darwin on the Indian Ocean. This is the route if Alice Springs and Uluru (Ayers Rock) are on your list of iconic travel sights. In my opinion, no trip to Australia is complete without the breathtaking experience of watching the sunrise over the magnificent red rock mountain of Uluru.

If time allows, you can even leave the train to spend an overnight or two at these points of interest. Rejoin the train to continue on to Adelaide. From there, you can transfer to the eastbound Indian Pacific train back to Sydney.

More Luxury Trains Around the World for a Rail and Sail Vacation

No matter which luxury train you choose, it’s a great way to begin or end a fabulous cruise. And these are just the tip of the luxury train iceberg. There’s the Golden Eagle – a luxury version of the Trans-Siberian Express from Moscow to Vladivostok. Take the elite Blue Train from Pretoria to Cape Town, South Africa and have your own bathtub in your compartment!
