Justin Bieber performs in 2010

Break-the-Bank Birthday

PRICE TAG $2.5 MILLION

As part of a $2.5 million, two-week birthday romp through southern France that a Los Angeles man threw for his wife and 30 of her friends, 20 vintage cars from all over Europe were imported to Provence for a road rally through the Bandol wine region. The road was closed to the public for the 90-minute race, and at one of the pit stops the birthday girl’s favorite chef from Los Angeles served snacks. Other highlights included a six-night sailing on a luxury cruise ship and a private cooking lesson with a two-star Michelin chef. – Lia Batkin, In the Know Experiences (212-776-1784)

Copter Crazy

PRICE TAG $17,000

A traveler in Istanbul who wanted to visit Troy at the last minute insisted on a twin-engine helicopter for the trip. One was procured—along with two pilots and a noted historian—for a tour that lasted just a few hours. – Kevan Cowie, Exeter International (800-633-1008)

Bieber Fever

PRICE TAG $25,000

Justin Bieber brings a girl onstage to serenade at every concert, so one client paid $25,000 for his daughter to be picked by the teen heartthrob. A New York couple paid close to $19,000 for a two-day trip to D.C. to attend President Obama’s second inauguration and inaugural ball. – Jim Zissler , Inside Sports & Entertainment Group (646-453-8821)

Politburo Par-tay!

PRICE TAG $1 Million

Six members of the Russian parliament, their wives, and adult children had planned a monthlong, $1 million vacation in Canada fishing, hunting, and stopping in Montreal for plastic surgery. Sadly, visa setbacks forced them to cancel the trip. – Marc Telio , Entrée Destinations (604-408-1099)

It Takes a Village

For a diversion during a $500,000 three-day holiday to Ireland, a family of five had a Celtic village, complete with thatched-roof roundhouses and silversmiths, constructed at Lismore Castle. Entertainment included jugglers, fiddle players, a sword fight, and a private fireworks show. – David Tobin , Dream Escapes (44-845-260-1085)

From Russia, with Rubles

PRICE TAG $800,000

A Russian tycoon took seven employees and their sons on a ten-day off-road trip in Mexico. They flew from Moscow to Chiapas in the client’s private 747, rented fifteen 4 x 4s directly from the owners (at $10,000 apiece), hired local police and private security for every leg of the trip, and had groceries imported from around the world—lobster from Maine, pheasant from England, and caviar from you know where. – Zachary Rabinor , Journey Mexico (800-513-1587)

Peak Experience

For a fiftieth-birthday celebration, a Canadian woman surprised her husband with a trip to Brazil. Birthday festivities—for some 30 guests—included a private dinner on Sugarloaf Mountain and joining in the winners’ parade during Carnaval. Price tag for the week: approximately $800,000. – Martin Frankenberg , Matueté (866-709-5952)

Top vacation values: where to save on luxury travel right now.

After dropping 10% since the start of the year, the yen is at the lowest rate to the dollar in three ... [+] and half decades, making it a great time to visit Japan.

The dollar is strong right now, and its value has risen steadily against many foreign currencies throughout the end of 2023 and up to today. On May 1, the New York Times listed ten major foreign countries that had lost significant ground against our currency since the first of the year, making them less expensive to visit. By significant, I mean as much as 10% (Japan)—and that’s just the past five months. Many of these currencies had already dropped last year, making the travel savings for travelers even more dramatic.

In addition, there was a vital 11th entry, the Eurozone, which has lost 3% more in 2024 and includes 20 additional countries, many of which are among the most desirable tourism spots on earth, such as Italy, France, Spain, Greece and Portugal. I traveled in the Piemonte region of Italy just a few weeks ago, and while I have been to Italy many times over the years, every day I was shocked by how low the prices for food and drink were, and Italy is one of the pricier of these popular Eurozone countries.

Beyond this, the Times reported that more than two-thirds of the 150 global currencies tracked by Bloomberg had weakened against the dollar. That’s not always a great thing for industry, business and investments, but it is a big bonus for travelers going abroad. However, some of these roughly 100 declining currency destinations are much better buys right now than others, across nearly every type of travel, from luxury to budget.

Cape Town's vibrant waterfront is full of great restaurants, and was just rated the cheapest major ... [+] city to have dinner.

Eating is one of the areas the strong dollar saves big on, and to exacerbate this, just about everywhere in the world tips less, usually much less, than we do. In most of Western Europe tipping at bars and restaurants is not expected and when you are wowed and do tip, we’re talking 5-10%. Just as the dollar has strengthened in recent years, our tipping culture has gone insane, tipping more for more things, including self-service. No one in Europe is going to use a credit card machine that tries to get you to tip for taking a water bottle out of a cooler like we do here, and when you eat out, you’ll be saving 10% or more on top of the currency just by following normal dining protocols and etiquette.

Samsung Slashes Galaxy S24 Price In A Major New Promotion

The 108 best extended memorial day sales you can still shop today, shop the birkenstock memorial day sale with these last chance deals.

Two weeks ago, London’s Telegraph , one of my favorite newspaper travel sections, ran a big package on the “ 50 Greatest Bargains in Travel .” Mind you that’s for readers spending pounds, which have also declined against the dollar, 1.5% just this year, making these bargains even more dramatic for Americans. They wrote, “You can find plenty of bargain places to eat in different cities around the world, but among the major tourist destinations surveyed by Post Office Money each year, it is Cape Town that delivers the best value overall. You can typically find a three-course evening meal—including a bottle of wine—for £34.64 for two people. In Europe, Lisbon is reckoned to offer the most affordable dining, with a bells-and-whistles meal costing £36.60.” That’s $44 and $46.50 respectively (for two!). I’ve eaten plenty of great meals in both Cape Town and Lisbon, and can confirm there’s a ton of bang for the buck, but right now, even more.

The entire Eurozone has weakend against the dollar, but for foodies, Portual has some of the best ... [+] buys in Western Europe.

The most obvious savings are on daily expenses such as food, drink, internal transportation (trains, taxis, etc.), attractions, entertainment and shopping. Lodging is also affected, but sometimes not at the high end of luxury, especially Western chains that price in dollars, and many 4- and 5-star brands keep rates more in line with what you pay here rather than local economic realities. But there are still luxury lodging bargains, especially independent and locally owned brands.

There have been other recent list of great travel bargain spots, but they tend to focus on individual cities or resorts, not countries, some quite small and some not so popular—Kenya’s Mombasa is really cheap right now but I don’t know anyone who is headed there. If you want to really enjoy the savings and effect of the strong dollar, but do it with luxe flair in some of the most desirable vacation spots on the planet, here are the top places to go.

Stop dreaming about going to South Africa and just go!

South Africa

While the currency has “only” lost about 2% this year, South Africa was already a great buy, and just getting better. I just went to Alto 234, a trendy 360-degree rooftop champagne bar overlooking Johannesburg, and a Macallan 12-year triple cask was $5.50. A Don Julio Repsoado tequila was less than $4.75. In New York you’d be lucky if you could find either of those for under twenty bucks. Wagyu Beef Slider—with fries? Six dollars. The Saxon is by far the top luxury hotel in the city, where Nelson Mandela stayed when he wrote his autobiography, along with a Who’s Who of other famous clientele, and it also has one of Africa’s top spas. A 60-minute massage, probably the priciest you’ll find in the city, is $90, strip mall pricing here. Booking.com has a King room at the Taj Cape Town—one of the world’s top luxury hotel brands—for $118. I mean come on!

You'll save even more in Japan—and have a great cultural experience—by avoiding Western chain hotel ... [+] brands and indulging in locals Inns known as ryokan.

No country as desirable for travel has had its currency drop as precipitously as Japan’s, and the last time the yen was this cheap was 1990. So, if you have not been to in three and a half decades, consider it. In addition, Americans have always misperceived Japan as an expensive place, which is somewhat (but still not entirely) true of Tokyo, its most visited city, but not of its countryside and many other charming places. Kyoto is high on every “over tourism” list and I’d avoid it, but otherwise the islands are your oyster, with some of the world’s most exceptional food. Plus, a cool part about any visit to Japan is staying in ryokans, the traditional Inns or B&Bs, and eating at local restaurants, and these are areas where you’ll save big. I’ve been skiing in Japan a few times, and even when the yen was strong, it was much cheaper than in the U.S. Now the yen is definitely not strong.

Buenos Aires is known as "The Paris of South America," but the steak is much better—and much ... [+] cheaper.

Second in terms of recent change only to Japan, Argentinean pesos have lost nearly 8% of their values just this year—and that followed a big December plunge—but it was a bargain spot already. Despite rampant inflation eroding some of the savings, it has great deals, and the Telegraph reporter described a week there eating £5 steaks and attending performances in one of the world’s most beautiful opera houses for £3 a ticket! Buenso Aires is arguably the steakhouse capital of the world and has many famed venues that will run you about a third of what top steakhouse meals cost here, with even bigger savings on the excellent Argentinean wines that are dirt cheap. If you go to a not famous local’s steakhouse, you’ll save even more but still eat great food, as most of the beef in Argentina is grass-fed, drug free, pasture raised and of superior quality to the typical domestic version we eat. Lodging? I just pulled up today’s hotel pricing for the capital on Hotels.com, and the legendary award-winning Alvear Place, the city’s most iconic luxury hotel, was $400. In many cities it would be a thousand or more. The NH, a great upscale European brand where I would gladly stay, was less than $100 a night!

Portugal's Algarve region is famed for beaches, golf, weather—and some of the best cheap wine on the ... [+] planet.

While almost all of Western Europe has gotten cheaper, Portugal has been the region’s bargain spot since before the advent of the Euro, and this continues to be the case. In addition, it has recently become a travel hotspot, and is having none of those intangible “moments” as an in destination. It’s hardly surprising, given the great food, great wine, history, beaches, golf, wealth of attractions and amazing weather. It’s one of the closest European destinations, with shorter flights, and the national airline TAP, a member of the world’s largest consortium, Star Alliance, offers a great value and quality for price proposition (I just bought tickets on TAP and they were much cheaper than U.S. carriers for the same route). As the Telegraph noted, Lisbon is the least expensive dining out city in Western Europe, but the food is also better than some of the alternatives. They also singled out a popular vacation region here, the Algarve, as Europe’s top wine bargain, noting that “a glass of decent Portuguese red will cost you about £1.62.” That’s two bucks.

Others to Consider

Canada is full of vibrant cities and stunning natural wonders like Banff National Park—all cheaper ... [+] to visit right now.

Brazil: The 5% drop in 2024 is one of the biggest in the world.

Canada: It may not be as sexy as some international hotspots, but is close, easy to get to, has an amazing diversity of offerings, and has lost nearly 3.5% already this year.

The UK: Perennially one of the most popular international destinations for American travelers, the pound has lost more than 1.5% in the past few months.

If you've been waiting for the right time to visit Australia, it's right now.

Australia: Ever since the pandemic, those far off destinations travelers wanted to visit “someday” have become places to go now, thanks in part to the increased fatalism and realization that life is unpredictable. For many Australia is the “someday” Bucket List trip, and if you go now, not only will you have a great time, you’ll find it 4% cheaper than it was just several months ago.

When planning your trip to Egypt, timing is crucial. The best time to visit Egypt is during the cooler months, from October to April, when temperatures are milder and more comfortable for sightseeing. Here are some key factors to consider:

  • The shoulder seasons (spring and fall) offer the best balance of pleasant weather and fewer crowds.
  • Peak season brings more tourists, but if that’s your only option, be prepared for the crowds.
  • Summer months in Egypt can be scorching hot, so consider that if you’re particularly heat sensitive.

When planning your trip to Egypt, consider attending major festivals like Ramadan or national holidays, which can impact opening hours and crowd levels at popular attractions.

To help you, I’ve created a guide covering everything you need to know while Visiting Egypt During Ramadan: Insider Guide to Celebration .

Before embarking on your Egyptian adventure, it’s essential to understand the visa requirements and travel costs. Check the visa requirements for your nationality well in advance. Many countries can obtain a visa upon arrival at Egyptian airports, but it’s best to confirm and be prepared. The visa fee is generally around $25 USD.

As for the trip to Egypt cost is relatively affordable compared to other popular destinations. You can expect to spend around $50-$100 per day for a mid-range traveler, including accommodation, food, transportation, and entry fees to major attractions. Here’s a rough estimate of some common expenses:

  • Airfare: $500-$1,000 roundtrip from major U.S. cities
  • Mid-range hotel: $50-$100 per night
  • Budget hotel: $20-$50 per night
  • Meals: $10-$25 per day (street food and casual restaurants)
  • Transportation: $5-$10 per day (for taxis and public transport)
  • Entrance fees: $10-$25 per site (e.g., pyramids, temples, museums)

To save money, consider staying in budget-friendly accommodations. A wide range of options exist, from budget hostels to luxurious hotels. Eating at local street food stalls and local eateries is incredibly affordable, and you’ll find delicious meals for just a few dollars. When exploring attractions, transportation like local buses and taxis is budget-friendly. Consider a Nile Cruise package for an all-inclusive experience.

Here are some unique adventures that you must experience when traveling to Egypt.

  • Soar over Luxor in a hot air balloon for breathtaking views of temples and the Valley of the Kings at sunrise-a true bucket list moment!
  • Camel rides near the Pyramids are a popular choice, but it’s important to be aware of the ethical concerns. To learn more, check out this article, Why A Camel Ride in Egypt Commands a Conflicting Ethical Decision delves into this complex topic.
  • Immerse yourself in Islamic Cairo. Discover its rich history and architectural beauty at the magnificent Al-Azhar Mosque.
  • No trip to Egypt is complete without sampling the delicious local cuisine! Try  koshari  (a hearty mix of rice, lentils, and pasta),  falafel  (chickpea fritters), and don’t forget stuffed pigeon – an Egyptian delicacy.

Planning a trip to Egypt can raise a lot of questions, so we’ve compiled some frequently asked questions to help you prepare for your journey.

Egypt is generally safe for tourists, especially when traveling with a reputable tour company or guide. However, it’s always important to exercise caution, be aware of your surroundings, and follow the advice of local authorities.

For long-distance travel, consider taking domestic flights or booking a Nile River cruise. Within cities, taxis and public transportation are affordable and convenient options. Hiring a private driver or tour guide can also make navigating Egypt more comfortable.

While it’s possible to explore some sites independently, booking guided tours in advance can provide invaluable insights and ensure a smoother experience. Guided tours are highly recommended for complex sites like the pyramids, Valley of the Kings, and ancient temples.

It’s important to dress modestly when visiting religious sites or Islamic mosques. Opt for lightweight, loose-fitting clothing that covers your shoulders and knees. Women may also want to carry a scarf to cover their heads when entering mosques.

No specific vaccinations are required for most travelers, but it’s always a good idea to consult with your healthcare provider before your trip. Ensure your routine vaccinations are up-to-date, and consider getting vaccinated against hepatitis A and typhoid fever. Bringing insect repellent and staying hydrated are also recommended.

Yes, most nationalities require a visa to visit Egypt. However, the process is relatively straightforward, and there are a couple of ways to obtain one:

Visa on Arrival: Citizens of many countries can obtain a visa upon arrival at Egypt’s international airports. The process involves filling out a form, paying a fee (typically around $25 USD, payable in cash), and having a passport valid for at least six months beyond your intended stay.

E-Visa: For added convenience, many nationalities can apply for an e-Visa in advance through the official Egyptian government portal ([invalid URL removed]). The process is entirely online and typically takes a few days for approval.

Important Notes:

Specific Requirements:  Always double-check the visa requirements for your specific nationality, as there may be variations. Some countries may have additional requirements or longer processing times.

Visa Validity:  The most common tourist visa for Egypt is valid for 30 days. If you plan to stay longer, consider applying for a multiple-entry visa or inquire about visa extensions upon arrival.

Resources:  For official visa information and updates, visit the Egyptian government website or consult your nearest Egyptian embassy or consulate.

Here It Comes: Another Hot Summer in Europe

Extreme heat and other weather challenges are in the forecast this summer, and travel advisers, tourists and local officials are getting prepared.

Europe, the world’s fastest-warming continent, is headed for another scorching summer, meteorologists warn. And travelers, once again, are heading to the hot spots.

Last year, large parts of southern Europe experienced prolonged periods of extreme heat with temperatures reaching 118 degrees and lasting up to two weeks or more. The sweltering conditions upended vacations throughout the summer season as visitors collapsed from heat exhaustion at crowded tourist sites, and wildfires led to evacuations in Greece, Italy and Spain.

“Our computer models are in good agreement that it’s going to be another unusually hot summer, especially during late July through August,” said Todd Crawford, vice president of meteorology at Atmospheric G2 , a weather and climate intelligence firm based in Manchester, N.H. The company expects the magnitude of the heat to be similar to 2022, the hottest summer ever recorded in Europe, with the most anomalous heat projected in the south, in popular countries for travelers like Greece, Croatia and Italy.

Since 1991, Europe has been warming at twice the global average, and 23 of the 30 most severe heat waves in Europe since 1950 have occurred since 2000, with five in the last three years, according to the World Meteorological Organization. The European Union's Copernicus Climate Change Service said several factors contribute to the continent’s vulnerability, including the proportion of European land in the Arctic — the fastest-warming region on earth — and changes in atmospheric circulation.

Yet despite the forecast and increasing trend of excessive summer heat, demand is still high for destinations where temperatures reached 100 degrees or higher in recent summers. Overall, U.S. demand for travel to Europe has increased since last year, according to the travel site Hopper . Rome, Paris and Athens are among the most searched cities out of billions of annual searches for summer vacations on Kayak and Expedia.

“The destinations are being booked again, and what really characterizes people is how quickly they forget and push back negative experiences,” said Stefan Gössling, a professor who researches tourism and climate change at Linnaeus University in Sweden. “People who were caught in life-threatening situations like the wildfires may reconsider where they travel, but for the broader population, we are not yet seeing a big change in decision-making because of the heat.”

Green spaces and heat officers: Cities adapt

As the summer approaches, popular destinations that were hit hard last year are working on protocols to make residents and tourists safe and more comfortable. In 2021, Athens became the first European city to appoint a chief heat officer to oversee those efforts. One of the first steps was to categorize heat waves by severity, like hurricanes, as an early warning system for the potential impact on human health. It is also naming heat waves to emphasize their potential risks.

“Heat is a silent killer and projections for the coming years show that it will only get worse, so we are redesigning our city and making changes to adapt,” said Elissavet Bargianni, the chief heat officer for Athens. Beyond raising awareness, the city plans to implement additional measures, which include increasing the number of green spaces and creating cool public areas.

For visitors planning to visit Athens this summer, Ms. Bargianni advises using the Extrema Global app that calculates the coolest route for getting from point A to point B according to the current temperature and density of the trees. The city already has several air-conditioned cooling centers that are free.

During last July’s heat wave, the Acropolis was forced to close between midday and the early evening to protect visitors after some of them collapsed from the heat. The ministry of culture could make the same decision this year, Ms. Bargianni said, if the heat is severe.

Heat and tours: Travel advisers get creative

Travel advisers are also factoring heat into flexible itineraries. In cities like Rome, Barcelona, Paris and Athens, they are scheduling sightseeing in the cooler morning and evening hours, and arranging air-conditioned transportation.

“We tend to do activities and tours in the morning, then stop for lunch, and in the mid- to late afternoon you either go back to the hotel to sit by the pool or go to the beach,” said Gary Portuesi, a co-managing partner at Authentic Explorations, a New York-based travel company that specializes in Europe.

If clients insist on taking midday tours, the company will work with local partners to make the experience as comfortable as possible. “If there is a six-hour tour, for example, they will cut it down to four and take them to an air-conditioned gelateria for a break,” Mr. Portuesi said.

It is not only the heat that travel advisers have had to grapple with, but also other unpredictable weather events. Last summer, while some parts of the continent were hot and dry, others were cold and wet. “There was a period during the summer peak when it was hotter in the Dolomites than it was in Sicily,” said Jennifer Schwartz, the Italy-based partner of Authentic Explorations. “The most important aspect of our job is to set expectations about the variables and guide people instead of saying it’s too hot, don’t come.”

Heat insurance?

To help travelers book with more confidence, Sensible Weather, a Los Angeles-based start-up that provides a weather guarantee for vacations and outdoor experiences, has recently added high heat protection to its coverage. When booking through a Sensible partner, travelers will be able to add daily protection and if the temperature exceeds a threshold — usually set between 90 and 100 degrees — they can claim reimbursement. Currently, the insurance is only available in the United States, but, the company said, will gradually be rolled out in Europe and elsewhere.

“The goal of the company is to cover everything that can ruin a trip, and usually it’s rain, but temperature is number two,” said Nick Cavanaugh, the company’s founder who was developing the product while caught in a heat wave in Barcelona last year.

Customers do not need to cancel their trip in order to be reimbursed. Those on package tours are reimbursed for the average daily rate of their entire trip for each day that surpassed the heat threshold. “Our customers can still go on their vacations, but if it’s too hot for some hours of the day and unpleasant to go outside, you can hang out in the air-conditioning and we will reimburse you,” Mr. Cavanaugh said.

Heading to cooler climes

Some travelers who were caught in Europe’s heat waves last summer are seeking cooler destinations this summer in places like Norway, Slovenia, Switzerland, Sweden and Finland. Flight searches for Tromsø, Norway, for example, have increased by 85 percent over 2023, according to Kayak.

Joanna Walker, a 43-year-old recruiter from Boston, was caught in a blistering heat wave with her family in Italy last July and vowed never to return during the summer. She said she had been advised to travel during the shoulder season, but couldn’t because her children were in school.

“We couldn’t even cool off in the pool because there was no shade and the water was hot,” Ms. Walker recalled. “We wanted to see the sights in Florence and have long lunches in the piazzas, but instead we were stuck in our overpriced villas under the air-conditioning.”

This year her family has booked a tour of Norway’s fjords in July, where temperatures linger in the high 60s. “It’s going to be a different vibe to Italy for sure, lots of nature and not as much history, but at least it will be cool enough to experience something.”

Rich Chinese millennials are creating new status symbols. Here are 11 ways they are redefining luxury.

  • Chinese millennials are redefining luxury status symbols by refocusing on quiet luxury and personal style.
  • Solo travel, pre-loved luxury fashion, and fine dining are also gaining popularity.
  • As this cohort approaches big life milestones, here's how their approach to luxury differs from their parents.

Insider Today

Millennials , aged between their late 20s and early 40s, are approaching the age for major life milestones: they've gained some ground in their careers, some are thinking about settling down with a family, and others have enough disposable income to splash on designer goods.

For the wealthiest among them, luxury status symbols can be a way to showcase your success to others. Rich millennials in the US have been known to splash out on their pets, new laundry rooms, and expensive coffee machines.

And over in China, rich millennials have their own ideas of what counts as a luxury status symbol. They've followed suit in embracing quiet luxury — expensive goods that aren't clocked by the untrained eye — and some are opting to have fewer kids to focus on their careers and are traveling solo.

Here are 11 luxury status symbols for Chinese millennials:

1. They've moved past allegiance with specific brands

Garish Gucci prints and flashy Louis Vuitton logos are no longer a top priority for luxury customers looking to display their style as a status symbol. These millennials are less loyal to specific brands than their parent's generation.

They "seek products and experiences that not only reflect their personal style and aspirations but also resonate with their cultural identity and values," Daniel Langer, a Pepperdine University luxury professor and CEO of the luxury strategy firm Équité, told Business Insider.

Customers want more personal items that reflect their values over a generic symbol of spending power.

It's more about an "inward feeling rather than an outward projection," said Amrita Banta, managing director of luxury insights firm Agility Research & Strategy.

2. Less loud luxury, more quiet luxury

Those who buy from designer brands are doing so more subtly. "Laoqianfeng" — a concept similar to the Western old-money aesthetic — has become a favorite of rich millennials in China. It refers to looking put together in an effortless way.

"This younger cohort is inclined to convey their elevated societal standing in understated ways," Elisa Harca, CEO of consultancy firm Red Ant Asia, told Business Insider.

Harca points to brands like The Row , which exemplify this style. The brand, founded by former child stars Mary-Kate and Ashley Olsen, prioritizes an anti-trendiness, focusing instead on simplicity, style, and comfort.

Even though the clothes may look understated, the key is in the details. Wealthy customers still want a high standard of customer service through talking one-on-one to sales assistance or being in contact with brands over WeChat to hear about exclusive products, Harca said.

Expect to see these rich millennials mixing luxury casual wear like T-shirts and sneakers with traditional luxury brands, Banta told BI.

3. Group travel is out, solo travel is in

Travel has also changed for today's rich millennials compared to their parents.

When their parts were growing up, China's world tourism was still in its infancy, which meant that organized tour groups were the travel option of choice for those with money. They were attracted to the safety and accessibility of traveling in a big group, said Harca.

But now younger Chinese people, especially those already well-traveled or have studied abroad, are opting for solo travel or traveling with small groups of friends.

Adventurous and immersive experiences to one-of-a-kind destinations are top of the travel list for this cohort — think glamping safaris and trips to Antarctica or Iceland , Banta told BI.

4. Pre-Loved Luxury Fashion

Pre-loved luxury fashion has taken off in the West as a more sustainable way to shop for designer brands. And many rich millennials in China are following suit.

For one, it's more sustainable . Reflecting your values in your purchases is becoming more important for customers, and as such, the environmental impact of the textile industry is a great concern for those buying clothes, said Olivia Plotnick, founder of Wai Social, a Shanghai-based social media agency.

So, luxury consumers are turning to secondhand clothes using platforms like Vestiaire Collective, The RealReal, and Mercari.

For some Chinese people, secondhand clothing items are associated with superstitions of bad luck and negative energy. But these beliefs hold less weight for younger generations, Harca told BI.

An added bonus of vintage and secondhand clothes is that they can be more individual than clothes found on the rack. Finding unique pre-loved clothes is a way to express individuality through fashion choices, Harca said. These items can have a more personal story behind them.

5. Buying products that come with an experience

Social media and the internet have made it easier to identify highly coveted items, so for luxury consumers, these brands are becoming too conspicuous.

Related stories

Instead, they're looking for ways to make these things more individual.

An exec at drinks conglomerate Diageo told BI about how the company is trying to appeal to this type of consumer as its Asian whisky market grows. It's doing so by investing in reopening distilleries like Port Ellen off the coast of Scotland to offer premium whisky tours .

"It's not enough to just say this is 45-year-old Port Ellen cask. They want to say they journeyed to Scotland, tested all these different whiskies, and to tell you about the experiences they had," said Ewan Andrew, Diageo president of global supply chain & procurement.

There are two main reasons customers are drawn to these experiential goods, according to Langer.

First, some people are attracted to brands that make them feel like part of an exclusive club and find their egos satisfied by VIP experiences. Another group finds more satisfaction in the authenticity and individuality of these experiences over overt displays of wealth.

6. Fine dining in Michelin-starred and Black Pearl-rated restaurants

Another emerging hobby among this affluent group is enjoying the burgeoning fine dining industry.

The Michelin Guide , which entered China in 2016, attracted some criticism for being too Western-centric, according to the South China Morning Post . That's where the Black Pearl guide comes in: it was set up in 2018 by Meituan , a Chinese food delivery giant, to appeal to Chinese consumers from a Chinese perspective.

But both guides are still popular with luxury consumers, according to Banta. These customers like to tick off highly rated restaurants in their own city and wherever they travel.

7. Choosing not to have kids

There's also been a cultural shift in societal attitudes toward marriage and parenthood, changing how wealthy millennials approach life milestones.

Some see having kids as a bad investment . Instead, this generation is more inclined to prioritize personal freedom, career development , and individual pursuits over starting a family, according to Harca.

8. Those who want kids are keen to maintain a level of luxury after giving birth

Luxury postnatal retreats have become popular with wealthy millennials, and some can cost over 200,000 yuan ($28,000) a month, Banta told BI.

Some new mothers in China have been flocking to these luxury post-natal retreats in Singapore, Bloomberg reported . The centers offer around-the-clock care for new parents including lactation consultants, nannies, and chefs.

The custom of staying inside your home for a month to recuperate after childbirth has been documented as early as 960 in China.

Modern iterations of these retreats are taking the concept to new, luxurious heights.

Some of these retreats in Singapore, like Clover Suites, offer month-long trips for new mothers, which include aesthetics clinics, herbal baths, and in-house physiotherapy centers. At Clover Suites, new mothers can expect restaurant-style meals and can enjoy some rest while nurses or nannies take care of their children.

And when they come back home, they're sure to spend on expensive luxury cots too, Banta added.

9. Splashing out on luxury home decor

Chinese millennials are investing their money in luxury home décor to elevate their living spaces and enhance their quality of life, Plotnick told BI.

She added that brands like Tom Dixon and Muuto are popular choices for furniture, lighting, and home accessories in China.

"They are designing every room with painstaking detail," according to Banta.

10. Splurging on wellness

Luxury wellness and self-care products, such as skincare, beauty , and wellness supplements , are all gaining popularity among health-conscious Chinese millennials, Potnick told BI.

Potnick pointed to one popular brand, mesoestetic , which offers aesthetic treatments like peels and facial needling.

The pandemic spurred the wellness trend, particularly for Gen Z and millennials.

Post COVID, people became more interested in wellness supplements to aid diet and improve health, Gabriella Tegen, cofounder and CEO of e-commerce subscription platform Smartrr, previously told BI . And getting regular aesthetic treatments has become a top priority for affluent millennials, Banta told BI.

McKinsey 2024 wellness report showed that 85% of its survey participants from China had purchased more in the longevity and healthy-aging category in the past year than in prior years, with Gen Z and millennials leading the charge over older generations.

11. Brands that stand for something

This cohort of wealthy millennials in China is more concerned about shopping from sustainable brands .

Eco-friendly materials and sustainable production are an increasingly important consideration for luxury purchases, Plotnick said.

Independent luxury brands that offer more authentic products and those that draw on cultural heritage are also highly in demand, she said.

10 Common Errors That Time Travel Movies Surprisingly Still Make Today

8 sci-fi movies that break their own time travel rules, keanu reeves’ john wick movies make this disappointing $855 million action franchise even worse in hindsight.

  • Time travel content often relies on established tropes and rules to drive the plot and avoid paradoxes.
  • The use of time travel tropes signals to the audience what to expect next in the story.
  • Characters traveling in time often face consequences like unintended changes to the future or dangerous paradoxes.

Time travel in film and television falls under the sci-fi genre, and many tropes and story elements can be found in every movie and TV show about time travel. Part of this stems from the fact that for time travel to work effectively within a story, there must be rules and restrictions for how the ability can be used, or too many paradoxes will arise. Sometimes, these paradoxes continuously appear across content that centers on time travel. Early examples of the genre have done much to influence what remains in films and TV series that deal with multiple timelines.

Additionally, the use of a trope simultaneously creates the ability to subvert it, which is something that many recent time travel movies and TV shows have been playing with.

The best time travel movies have much in common, and it's easy to see why filmmakers are so drawn to the tropes, even if they've been done many times before. They're classics for a reason and the use of a trope signals to the audience that they will understand the next part of the story and are in on the narrative shorthand writers employ. Additionally, the use of a trope simultaneously creates the ability to subvert it, which is something that many recent time travel movies and TV shows have been playing with.

Time travel movies are rife with contradictions, errors, and inconsistencies. These are some of the most common mistakes that movies still make.

7 The Future Is Worse After The Characters Change It

The butterfly effect (2004); the umbrella academy (2016–2024).

When the characters in a film purposely use time travel to change events in the future, they have a specific goal and a world-ending event to stop. Conversely, they might also go back for their own personal uses and designs, to prevent a family tragedy, or get a do-over after a particularly difficult situation. However, almost invariably, when the characters return to the future, excited to see the fruits of their labor, they're met with the opposite of what they intended. The future is different but for the worse.

Additionally, there could be an even more devastating result; that nothing changes and the future is fixed no matter what the characters do. In The Butterfly Effect , a man with the ability to change his past continuously goes back to stop the pain of a loved one, but each time he returns to the present something goes wrong. Additionally, in the Netflix original, The Umbrella Academy , time travel is introduced as a potential solution to the characters' problems. However, when they return to the present, the world has shifted so that they practically never existed.

The Butterfly Effect

Not available

The Butterfly Effect is a time travel sci-fi movie centered around Evan (Ashton Kutcher), a young man who discovers he has the ability to change events from his past by embodying his younger self. The 2004 film explores the titular concept, which states that any small change in a system's initial conditions results in extremely different results.

6 The Characters Meet Their Parents

Lost (2004–2010); dark (2017–2020).

Though Back to the Future might be the most famous example of a child going back in time and navigating an unexpected relationship with their parents, many great movies and TV shows have followed in its footsteps. It's a well-worn subject because if a character interferes with their parents, they run the risk of never being born, disrupting their entire future. This is a recurring worry that all time travelers face, as the act of meddling with the timeline inherently puts a person's life and existence in peril.

However, a large group ends up in the past, causing a mother, Eloise, to accidentally kill her own son because she doesn't know who he is.

The rules of time travel in Lost can be difficult to comprehend, but the consequences are always clear. Once time travel is introduced, the characters are flung across the time stream. However, a large group ends up in the past, causing a mother, Eloise, to accidentally kill her own son because she doesn't know who he is. Additionally, in the psychological thriller series, Dark , a portal is discovered that allows people to interact with past and future versions of themselves and their loved ones, but the results are rarely favorable.

Lost is a mystery drama series created for TV that follows a group of survivors of a plane crash and tells its story between the past, present, and future via flashbacks. When Oceanic Airlines Flight 815 crashes and lands on a mysterious island in the pacific ocean, the castaways discover their new temporary home may have a mind of its own, as strange supernatural events keep them locked to the island. From an unknown black smoke creature to dangerous islanders, the passengers must work together to survive the island's seemingly deadly intentions.

5 People Making Themselves Rich

Back to the future part ii (1989); primer (2004).

Unfortunately, it's all too rare in film and television for people to act out of purely selfless motivations. More often, they have an angle or ulterior motive that's the driving force behind their decisions. In time travel movies, the first thing that comes to mind when people gain this power is how to best use it to their advantage. The answer is almost always using their knowledge of the past to make as much money as possible. Whether this is through sports betting or stock market manipulation, it's an easy way to cheat the system and get rich.

The sports betting plot is used in Back to the Future Part II when Biff gets his hands on a collection of sports results throughout the years and uses the DeLorean to give it to his younger self. Of course, the money ultimately leads to his ruin, as in Primer . Though Primer is one of the most intricate and scientifically accurate time travel movies, its biggest conflicts can be boiled down to a disagreement about how to use the machine and the money that's made from it. The main characters want to make money but take different approaches.

Back to the Future Part II

Taking up where the first movie left off, Back to the Future Part II sees Marty McFly and Doc Brown travel to the year 2015, where their efforts to fix the future end up causing even bigger problems as Biff Tannen wreaks havoc across the timeline with the help of a stolen sports almanac. Martin J. Fox and Christopher Lloyd return in Robert Zemeckis and Bob Gale's second installment of their iconic trilogy.

4 Characters Encounter Multiple Versions Of Themselves

Avengers: endgame (2019); looper (2012).

It's aptly put in Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban that if a person sees another version of themselves who claims to be from the future, they would believe they were losing their grip on reality.

It's aptly put in Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban that if a person sees another version of themselves who claims to be from the future, they would believe they were losing their grip on reality. While this is sometimes the case in time travel content, certain movies create universes with multiple explanations for these events. In the case of Avengers: Endgame , when the Avengers go back in time to collect the infinity stones, Captain America must fight a younger version of himself, and the younger man believes his dopplegänger must be the creation of an evil entity.

This circumvents the need to over-explain the paradox and allows the movie to have fun with the multiple Steve Rogers'. Conversely, in Looper , Joe is aware that another version of himself is out there, and it's his younger self's job to kill his older self who's sent back in time. This expands upon the initial questions of the difference between a person at the beginning of their life and the end, and whether or not an individual is the same across multiple timelines. Though the audience knows old Joe and young Joe are the same man, they’re vastly different.

Avengers: Endgame

The penultimate chapter in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, Avengers: Endgame , marks the finale of the first three phases of the MCU and acts as part two of Avengers: Infinity War. With Earth's Mightiest Heroes failing to stop Thanos from wiping out half of all existence, the heroes discover one final chance to make things right. Journeying back through space and time, the surviving Avengers attempt to stop Thanos before all is lost.

Even the most beloved of sci-fi movies break their own time travel rules, prioritizing plot and impactful scenes over maintaining consistent lore.

3 The Characters Are Stuck In A Time Loop

Groundhog day (1993); edge of tomorrow (2014).

Though the best time loop movies could be considered their own genre, they still fall under the umbrella of time travel. A character getting stuck in a time loop is a tactic employed to be the thrust of entire movies as well as standalone episodes of TV shows . Sometimes it's used for comedic effect, in the case of Groundhog Day , a film that sees a curmudgeonly man begin to find the everyday joys in life after he's forced to relive the same day. This inspired the recent comedy, Palm Springs , which was lauded as a great update of the genre.

However, in Tom Cruise's adventure film, Edge of Tomorrow , the stakes are much greater and the fate of the world hangs in the balance of his character getting the loop right. The introduction of the time loop is an incredible twist, and the stakes are maintained by having Cruise and his co-star, Emily Blunt, gain new skills and insight into their battle as the day repeats itself. Though it's quite brutal, as Cruise's William relives his own death, it's never boring no matter how many loops there are.

Groundhog Day

In Groundhog Day, the arrogant weatherman Phil Connors (Bill Murray) finds himself living the exact same day over and over for what feels like an eternity. To cope with his curse, he learns a variety of skills in the town of Punxsutawney, Pennsylvania, and tries to earn the heart of his colleague Rita Hanson (Andie MacDowell) while he adapts to the time loop.

2 The Events Couldn’t Have Happened If They Didn’t Travel In Time / Chicken And Egg Paradox

Interstellar (2014); the terminator (1984).

It's only later that Cooper realizes he has been controlling the events from the beginning.

In both Interstellar and The Terminator the film's story and the fate of the future are predicated on time travel having already taken place. Cooper is given the coordinates and his daughter receives the equation because he decides to leave Earth, but he only makes this decision because of the messages from his future self. It's only later that Cooper realizes he has been controlling the events from the beginning. Similarly, in The Terminator , the Terminator is sent back to prevent Sarah Connor from giving birth to her son, John.

However, the man who was sent back in time to protect Sarah, Kyle Reese, is John's father. Sarah conceives John while the Terminator hunts her and Kyle. In both cases, all of the major beats of the film could not have happened without each other and without the timeline getting disrupted. This begs the question of what action needed to occur first for everything to play out as it does. For films like these, the audience must suspend their disbelief and accept that time travel inevitably creates these paradoxes.

Interstellar

From Christopher Nolan, Interstellar imagines a future where the Earth is plagued by a life-threatening famine, and a small team of astronauts is sent out to find a new prospective home among the stars. Despite putting the mission first, Coop (Matthew McConaughey) races against time to return home to his family even as they work to save mankind back on Earth.

1 An Eccentric Scientist Creates The Machine

Back to the future (1985); rick and morty (2013–present).

While tropes and story structure are constantly revisited in time travel and sci-fi movies, the repetition of character archetypes is just as common. The "mad scientist" character is familiar to any audience member, but Doc Brown in Back to the Future created a new version that has been copied and paid homage to many times. Rick and Morty owes a lot to Back to the Future , as the satirical TV series was conceptualized because of the 1985 film. Having an older, eccentric scientist traverse time and space with a reluctant teenager is a great blueprint for any movie or show.

These two pieces of content are hardly the only instance of a reclusive scientist being the one to finally crack the code of time travel. In early books and texts that speculate about time travel, it's a misunderstood but brilliant inventor who keeps going and pushes the boundaries of reality even when nobody believes in him. Luckily, in Back to the Future and Rick and Morty , the scientists have close friends who serve as strong companions on their adventures.

Back to the Future

Marty McFly, a 17-year-old high school student, is accidentally sent 30 years into the past in a time-traveling DeLorean invented by his close friend, the maverick scientist Doc Brown. In 1955, he meets his parents when they were his age, and must step in to make sure they wind up together before he gets back to 1985.

  30. 7 Things That Happen In Every Time Travel Movie & TV Show
