History of Trident Studios

Getting There

Famous Artists Who Played Here

History of Trident Studios Founded by brothers Norman and Barry Sheffield, Trident made a name for themselves in the 1960’s and still operate today in their original location. The site of Trident Studios has been the site of pilgrimage for thousands of London visitors who want to get a glimpse of a building where hours and hours of musical history were recorded.

Why Did Trident Become The Recording Studio of Choice?

The Sheffield brothers were interested in using state of the art technology which really helped draw attention to their studio. Trident Studios were one of the first recording studios in the UK to employ an 8-track reel to reel recording deck (compared to Abbey Road’s 4-track) and to employ Dolby noise reduction. They were also known for their Bechstein Piano which, at over 100 years old, was sought out by musicians such as Elton John and The Beatles who wished to play on it.

Once Beatles began recording their work at Trident and soon other members of Apple Records began recording there as well…putting the studios on track for mega-success. Did Trident Do Anything Else?

Trident Studios started a record production company in 1972 and one of the acts they signed…was Queen! Surprisingly, when the Queen were just starting out they struggled to find any management. As they were going to be recording in Trident Studios, they asked if the Studio would manage them and they agreed. Later, struggling to find any companies to release Queen’s debut album, the Sheffield brothers decided to launch it itself. And the rest, as they say, is history.

Were it not for Trident Studios, we may never have even heard of Queen today!

Though the current occupiers of the original building for Trident Studios are named Trident Sound Studios Limited are so named in recognition of the origins of the building, the Studios as they would have been known and recognised by acts recording here in the 60’s and 70’s has left. Currently, they are limited to voice over and ADR work. However, you will find that the building hosts a London Blue Plaque as being the original site of many David Bowie recordings.

Located at  17 St. Anne’s Court, Soho, London W1F 0BQ  ( map ), we visit this building on our Rock N' Roll Tour of London !

Studio II, Abbey Road Studios

Rock on! Abbey Road Studios is opening its doors to the public

The legendary recording studio is celebrating its ninetieth anniversary

Ed Cunningham

It’s an age-old tradition, a rite of passage for Beatlemaniac Londoners. Get three mates, go down to Abbey Road, then hold up obscene amounts of traffic while trying to recreate The Beatles’ iconic 1969 zebra-crossing-straddling album cover.

But for a few very, very special days this week, music obsessives visiting Abbey Road will be able to do more than just infuriate local drivers. The legendary Abbey Road Studios , responsible for some of the greatest music recordings ever made, is opening its doors to the public.

As many superlatives as I whip out, they don’t do Abbey Road justice. From The Beatles to Adele, Kanye West to Kate Bush, these studios, engineering booths and practice rooms have hosted music greats from across the generations and witnessed countless magical moments in pop and rock history.

And now, to celebrate the studios’ ninetieth anniversary, the public are being allowed inside. Ticket-holders will be treated to a 90-minute tour of the studios, including visits to the control rooms, three of its original recording rooms and the Studio Two Echo Chamber, learning about its history along the way.

Tickets are still available and can be bought from the Abbey Road: Open House website .

Abbey Road Studios, 3 Abbey R d, NW8 9AY. Aug 9-15. £100.

Red Bus Music

Red Bus Music

One of London’s best loved recording studios since 1978…

Red bus recording studios.

are one of the most famous recording suites in London. The studios have an unprecedented history of recording, mixing and mastering, and have recently celebrated 40 years of exceptional recording talent from Culture Club, Spandau Ballet, Alison Moyet to Duran Duran.

  https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hvU5sGvKOhM

Having worked with some of the world’s most celebrated artists and producers including Oliver Cheatham, Imagination, Tina Turner and Joe Dolan to name a few, the combination of its engineering excellence and range of unrivalled equipment has brought Red Bus Recording Studios to the heart of the music industry for over 40 years.

Red Bus Recording Studios began its long and prestigious history back in 1978 by co-founding members Eliot Cohen, Ellis Elias and Leslie Grade (former owner of London Management).

Having earned enormous successes earlier in the management of artists such as Mungo Jerry, as well as the running of the renowned Hollywood Music Festival in 1970 where 40,000 fans attended, Eliot, Ellis and Leslie looked to offer a space for artists to record their music.

Taking them into a world of drum machines, synthesisers, sampling and hi-tech recording technology. It quickly developed into one of the best known and best loved recording studios in Europe, opening its doors to a wealth of recording talent.

Today it continues to strive, founding its sister music publishing company Associated Music International Ltd. and establishing some of the best names in music this decade.

All of red bus recordings are preserved in the group’s archive, containing some of the most significant original analogue recordings to date., leave a reply cancel reply.

Ten of the Best Recording Studios in London

London recording studios

Join us as we take a look at some of the best recording studios in London, including the iconic Abbey Road, a completely solar panelled studio and many more. ..

The ten London studios on this list span the entire city and all offer great facilities, knowledgeable studio engineers and fantastic spaces for recording your single, EP or album.

We’ve included some legendary studios on this list as well as lesser-known gems which offer a more affordable service. So, let’s get straight to it.

[On the other side of the pond? Check out our guide to 8 iconic New York recording studios too]

Table of Contents

1. Premises Studios

This London recording studio was originally opened in 1986 by two local jazz musicians, Dill Katz and Colin Dudman, as a low-budget alternative to the established (and expensive) London studios of the time.

The studio itself (which also houses its own rehearsal space) is impressive. Its most notable aspect outside of its impressive gear and architecture is the fact that it’s entirely solar-powered.

The studio space is a 1000 square foot roof-top recording studio that houses four separate, isolated areas. The studio also contains a conservatory area.

The studio houses a full, up to date ProTools system (with HDX rig), and a 24-channel SSL console (analogue). The instruments are included free of charge , which includes a Yamaha C3 series acoustic grand (although session tuning is charged for upon request), a Gretsch 5-piece kit, several synths, guitars and bass guitars, and the amps to go with them.

The studio welcomes clients to bring their own studio engineer, or hire from their staff.

Their client list includes the likes of jazz-pop singer Jamie Callum , Ben E. King (of Stand By Me fame), and Amy Winehouse.

Due to its solar power, this studio is best for those who wish to be a little more environmentally friendly. The large space and conservatory is fit for a more relaxed feel, and the analogue/digital hybrid setup is good for someone who wants a vintage sound without the complexities of tape.

The studio has a live room, so it is ideal for bands or solo artists who want an acoustic/live feel. The studio also contains high-quality gear, with everything mentioned, plus the addition of several Neumann mics in an impressive microphone collection.

2. Livingston Studios Complex

Situated in a converted church in Wood Green, North London, The Livingston Studios Complex contains two studios housed in a converted church building, which was taken over by Miloco in 2013 . The complex contains two studios, both with multiple live spaces, booths, and control rooms.

The first studio, Livingston 1 has three large spaces and a large control room with a 72 channel SSL SL4072 G+ series console. Thanks to its ample space, it’s a great choice for larger ensembles and big bands.

Two of the rooms are divided by glass walls with doors that allow for the space to be opened up.

The recently refurbished Livingston 2 also has three live spaces, a control room (featuring a Custom Series 75 console) and an additional space that is often used as a bass amp booth or isolation area.

Livingston 1 houses a full up to date ProTools system as well as an Ampex tape recorder. There is also an impressive selection of AKG, Shure, and Neumman microphones.

The instruments include a 1978 Fender Precision Bass, a 1970s Fender Stratocaster, and a Martin D-16GT Acoustic.

Their recent clients include Michael Kiwanuka, jazz-pop singer Jamie Cullum, and the Brodsky Quartet.

This studio is best for artists looking to record live/simultaneously.

Livingston 1 is best for live ensembles and large groups of people looking to record simultaneously, whereas Livingston 2 is great for bands looking to record live (simultaneously) without [sound] bleed whilst still being able to see each other.

3. Abbey Road Studios

It almost goes without saying that Abbey Road is one of the best recording studios in London. It is so legendary that it has become a household name for many. The Beatles and their album named after the studio, along with their famed zebra-crossing walk has made the building not only a famed studio but a tourist attraction.

That said, the studio itself is more than impressive, containing the three legendary spaces of Studio One, Two, and Three.

There is an extensive range of outboard equipment, plugins and vintage and modern instruments to use.

Famed artists that have recorded at the studio (other than the Beatles) include both Shirley Bassey and Aretha Franklin.

Whilst the legendary Studio One, Two, and Three are expansive, acoustically-engineered spaces with a plethora of impressive equipment, the newer additions of the smaller Gatehouse and Front room make the magic of Abbey Road more accessible for upcoming artists with a lower budget. Abbey Road is a flexible studio, with much to offer.

Studio One can also accommodate a large symphony orchestra or chorus, making it ideal for recording big band jazz or film scores.

4. Resident Studios

Resident Studios have been open for over thirteen years, and boast two recording studios (as well as three rehearsal rooms). The studios were established in 2001 when they took over from Stepping Stone Studios, which was a leading studio during the busy Willesden music scene.

Since then, the studios have evolved with the technology, moving from analogue tape to SSL and ProTools.

Studio A sports a vintage solid-state logic (SSL) analogue console, whereas Studio B and C have smaller, humbler desks. The studios host an impressive microphone collection, including a selection of Neumman, Shure, AKG, Audio-Technica, and Rode mics.

The selection is also diverse (as is the case with many of the studios on this list), including dynamic, condenser, and ribbon microphones.

Resident Studios pride themselves on accommodating lower budgets with ‘extremely competitive prices’, so this studio is best for just that: people looking for quality recordings at an affordable price (in comparison to many major London studios, that is).

5. Metropolis

Perhaps one of the more extravagant studios on this list, Metropolis is a complex of recording, mixing, and mastering suites that is ‘designed around a massive and airy twenty-metre high atrium filled with platforms and walkways’.

This massive complex gives a lot of space and freedom, contrary to the claustrophobic atmosphere of typical studios. The complex also contains a fifty space security car park and nineteen residential apartments. On top of this, the Metropolis has its own ‘outstanding quality’ bar.

While this is not necessary, if your budget is on the higher side, this studio may give you the ambience that you’re looking for.

All four studios sport their own distinct analogue consoles. Whilst recording at the studio you will have access to their engineers and assistants, as well as a microphone/equipment list that the website deems ‘enviable’.

They’re not lying, the list is so extensive that there’s no need to go into it here, just know that the list is extensive, and contains everything necessary for a great recording. There are large selections of all types: dynamic, small and large-diaphragm condensers, valve, ribbon, and even wireless.

Artists that have recorded here include Mark Knopfler, Rush, Van Morrison, Eric Clapton, and Billy Preston.

This studio is best for those looking for something more expansive. Metropolis is an extravagant complex, with a plethora of options, so it’s likely to accommodate all kinds of artists.

6. The Drum Shed

The Drum Shed is a fully equipped studio for recording drum tracks. They boast a large selection of both new and vintage drums.

The Drum Shed uses Logic Pro instead of ProTools, and they have a much smaller amount of microphones than the other studios on this list. However, the studio does benefit from being a speciality studio, as it has a large selection of drum options for building out a kit.

This studio is best for those who are looking for a customisable drum sound. It is best for those who have a guide track or demo already and are looking to record the rest of the record somewhere else, or perhaps at home.

This could also be good for those recording on micro-budgets from their bedrooms, who cannot record drums from home for whatever reason.

7. Dean Street Studios

This studio has a long history, once known for being used as a film studio during the 1950s. A48 channel SSL console can be found in the control room along with an 8-channel Shadow Hills preamp.

The studio also houses a Steinway grand piano. This extensive equipment list comes at no extra cost when booking Studio 1. You can download this extensive list from their website.

Dean Street is best known for recording the likes of Alfie Boe, Cee Lo Green, and Wolf Alice, among others.

Dean Street Studios is based in the vibrant and exciting Soho district and prides itself on creating a relaxed and friendly environment to help inspire creativity.

8. RAK Studios

Located in North London and founded in 1976, all of RAK’s studios a spacious, and boast plenty of natural light. Unlike most studios, RAK has in-house accommodation for up to six people, including catering facilities and off-street parking for up to 10 vehicles.

This is great if you live far away and don’t want to shell out for travel expenses or an expensive hotel, and it’s also great if you’re bringing a lot of your own equipment, or you have a large band.

Among the studio’s impressive equipment list is a Roland Juno 106, a Roland Jupiter 8, a Wurlitzer, a Fender Rhodes, and a Leslie cab. The studio notably doesn’t include any guitars or basses, but it does feature several amplifiers. The studio also contains several drum kits.

The computers, software, preamps, and microphones are industry standard.

Over the years, RAK has worked with Yes, Pink Floyd, Ricky Lee Jones, Jools Holland, and Edwin Starr.

This studio is best for those who are looking for a historic, tried and tested studio, and it’s also the best choice for those in need of accommodation.

9. Soho Sonic

Regarded as one of the best recording studios in London, this facility prides itself on its friendly and highly experienced production team. They boast ‘the best sound engineers and producers to assist you with your projects.’

The studio, like the others on this list, has an SSL desk, as well as a plethora of microphones and other equipment. They also provide a long list of instruments, including a Gibson J45, a Fender Telecaster, a Roland Juno 6, a Korg MS-20, and a Yamaha DX7. Their most notable microphone is likely the Neumann U87.

The studio says they ‘don’t believe in a fixed price for everybody’, so the studio is seemingly low-budget friendly. All prospective clients can also visit them for a free consultation, which is a nice option if you’re on the fence about whether to record there or not.

This studio is best suited for those looking for a more personal touch, along with the option for low-budget entry.

10. The Church Studios

The legendary Church Studios relaunched in 2014 after a hiatus following a long history, led by the acclaimed music producer and songwriter Paul Epworth

Their most notable space is Studio 1, as it boasts an expansive floor space, triple-height ceiling, and a vast equipment list. A key feature of the studio is its 72 channel vintage EMI Neve console. According to their website, it is ‘the only one of its kind in London’.

The Neve console is legendary in of itself, so this is certainly a selling point for those looking for a vintage and warm sound.

Church also has a second studio (aptly named Studio 2), but with a modern SSL console instead. This room can record 4-5 piece bands, with a large booth that can accommodate isolated drums. Studio 2 also has a private lounge and communal kitchen.

This studio is versatile, as it offers both a modern and vintage approach with its two broadly different studio spaces. Studio 1 is an expansive, no-bars space that is great for vintage experimentation, whereas Studio 2 might be better suited to those with a more modern, minimalist mindset.

There are countless other studios in London, many of which could have made this list. A few honourable mentions include AIR Studios, Jimi Hendrix-designed Electric Lady Studios and Britannia Row Studios.

When you’re finished in the recording studio, be sure to check out some of the best jazz clubs in London . If you’re a recording artist, head over to our complete guide to releasing new music for more top tips.

If this list does one thing for you, I hope it serves as an antidote to procrastination and analysis paralysis.

In all seriousness, they have borne witness to half a century’s worth of music trends, artists, and creative dynamism.

They are dedicated to creating a well-appointed, relaxed, unpretentious experience that fosters creativity.

The atmosphere is relaxing and refreshing, with a welcoming and warm ambiance.

Located in the vital beating heart of Soho, Dean Street Studios have the street cred and the heritage to captivate any music lover.

They offer production, post-production, and even remote online engineering services.

David Bowie, T Rex, Adele, and Ed Sheeran have all utilized their services. If that doesn’t convince you then take a look at their expansive, jaw-dropping equipment list.

6. Resident Studios

Resident Studios

Calling all benchwarmers (jokes, jokes) – Resident Studios offers an “unsigned special” for those on the lookout for their big break!

I love the idea of studios fostering support and community for independent musicians.

All of your musical icons started out as unsigned hopefuls, and I am a strong believer in putting more resources into sharing the creativity and ingenuity of new musicians.

They have two acoustically-treated recording studios and three rehearsal spaces, so you can shed the nerves and practice your craft in the comfort of a relaxed and acoustically-designed space. They also offer SSL and ProTools.

They are noted as well for their extensive selection of microphones – including the condenser, ribbon, and dynamic – from some of the best brand names in the biz.

It is only accessible via an inconspicuous driveway in Willesden Green and they treat their A-listers and local acts with the same dedicated degree of care and curation.

Telephone: +44 20 8830 4321 Website: https://www.residentstudios.com/ Email: [email protected] Address: 57A Windsor Rd, London NW2 5DT

7. Soho Sonic Studios

Soho Sonic Studios

Soho Sonic Studios, located in the stylish, well-heeled heart of London, offers production, recording, green screen, and location filming services.

They employ some of the best producers and sound engineers around, guaranteeing you a bespoke, elevated experience. If you’re going to give it a go, why not give it your all?

They don’t believe in one set price and are open to customizing depending on your experience, budget, and needs.

They also offer free consultations and tours, which adds to the impression that they are not only one of the best in class, but they know it.

They have an SSL desk, Gibsons’, Yamahas’, a Roland Juno 6, a Fender Telecaster, and a wide selection of microphones.

If all else fails they have a plush, hedonistic purple couch. What’s a London recording studio without some groovy furniture?

Contact them for prices.

Telephone: +44 (0)20 7193 4467 Website: https://www.sohosonic.com/ Email: [email protected] Address: Golderbrock House, 15/19 Great Titchfield Street, London, W1W 8A

8. Select Recording Studios

Select Recording Studios

They’ve got all the hits: mixing, recording, voiceover, mastering…and they do it all for a price tag that won’t send your checking account into the depths of the earth’s crust.

They also market their expertise in providing recording services for solo artists.

Select is great for a no-frills experience. They focus less on glamorous aesthetics and more on high-quality tech and offer an unreal selection of synths, studio outboards, and microphones for creators.

The list is a music lover and tech lover’s dream.

Four hours of studio time will set you back £245, which is pretty reasonable if divided up between you and your bandmates.

If you’re going solo, you’re in luck: they only charge 50 pounds for one hour of recording.

Telephone: +44 7980 000345 Website: https://selectrecordingstudios.co.uk/ Email: [email protected] Address: Chocolate Factory 2, 4 Coburg Road, Woodgreen, London N22 6UJ

9. RAK Studios

RAK Studios

Founded in 1976 in gritty, trendy North London RAK Studios has the cool-kid rep to entice any fledgling musician. Their design is spacious and airy and designed to optimize natural light.

There is definitely a stereotype of the dark and dank recording room, and while that certainly applies to many locales, RAK bucks that trend.

They also have residential space for your band to hang out and relax while you record. They have lots of storage space for your gear but if you want to be lightfoot and fancy-free, they also have tons of their own quality gear on offer.

That includes Rolands, a Wurlitzer, a Fender Rhodes, and multiple drum kits. Equipment nirvana.

If you’re not sold, consider the fact that prog rock greats Pink Floyd and Yes have recorded at RAK during their legendary careers.

Reach out for prices.

Telephone: +44 20 7586 2012 Website: https://rakstudios.co.uk/ Email: [email protected] Address: 42-52 Charlbert St. London NW8 7BU

10. Abbey Lane Studios

Abbey Lane Studios

Shoot for the moon and all that, am I right? Maybe you’re the ambitious type, the type that only gets out of bed for something special, the type that doesn’t do half-measures.

Well, my friend, why not take a shortcut right to the historical, and contemporary, heart of the British music industry?

If it originates from the hallowed sound room of Abbey Lane, you know the world will perk up and pay attention.

They have a massive collection of modern and retro instruments, and a litany of hyper-talented staff and experts to hold your hands.

You will also get the rights to brag for the rest of your life that you recorded at Abbey Lane – a goal for any music lover and ambitious creator.

Sure, it will set you back some silver and gold, but money spent towards realizing your creative goals at a London recording studio is money well spent.

Telephone: +44 (0)20 7266 7000 Website: https://www.abbeyroad.com/ Email: [email protected]  Address: Abbey Road Studios, 3 Abbey Road, St. John’s Wood London NW8 9AY

THE STUDIOS

Audiohaus is a thriving creative complex within the heart West London. Combining a vintage mixing console with state of the art digital recording and custom built vintage equipment, Audiohaus is the perfect place for audio recording, music production, mixing and mastering.

With fifteen years of experience working with a diverse range of artists, we confidently cater to all styles of music. Whether it be recording bands, producing music, voice over, mixing, mastering or artist development, our facility is a creative escape where you can bring your vision to life.

The studio is centered around a 32 channel SSL AWS900+ console. Combining this with a collection of Neuman and AKG microphones captures music in pristine quality. Vintage Neve and API preamps amplify the signal and a selection classic EQs and compressors further shape the sound. Monitoring is from industry standard ATC SMC25s and Yamaha NS-10s. This studio is perfect for bands and ensembles looking to live-record or soloists looking for high quality recording.

Studio 2 is the ideal studio for projects looking for maximum quality without the need to multitrack record. Based around a Universal Audio interface, a Focusrite ISA channel strip and using microphones from Studio 1, allows this studio to maintain the same quality. Monitoring is from Genelec 1032s and Yamaha NS10s. It is perfect for soloists, rappers, voice over and even as a writing and production room.

RECORDING SPACES

There are four acoustically treated recording spaces to choose from. For a live sound that delivers impact there is a specifically designed drum room. A more intimate sound can be achieved from the smaller live room and three booths are available for recordings which require a dead, reverbless sound. All the recording spaces are linked to Studio 1 meaning a five piece ensemble can play together but the parts are recorded in isolation, perfect for editing and mixing in post.

Miloco's business grown from our London recording studios, which has developed into a unique producer-driven business model. We have partnerships with many producers and engineers including Flood and Alan Moulder, Ben Hillier, Stephen Street, Guy Chambers and Brett Shaw. Combined with our own London recording studios, this awesome selection of privately owned facilities is the most dynamic and exciting choice of recording studios London has to offer.

Tracking Studios: Our London tracking studios range from the immense to the unique, but each one provides a fantastic service to every project it welcomes. Studios such as Battery Studio 2, Livingston Studio 1, The Pool and The Premises provide expansive recording spaces and a selection of smaller isolation booths, and come with vast collections of the very best equipment. Other studios, for example Livingston 2, are more affordable band tracking rooms with interesting bits of gear for musicians to try out, and which are based in cool and inspiring parts of the city.

Mixing Studios: Some of Miloco's London mixing studios are the regular choice of some of the industry's leading names: Battery Studio 1, Dean Street Studios and The Red Room London rank amongst the best SSL mixing studios in town. We also have a selection of affordable 'mixing in the box' rooms.

Writing Studios: We are constantly developing our portfolio of great writing studios designed to be the perfect places for writers and bands to start creating records in. Studios such as The Bridge and Sleeper Sounds provide comfortable and luxurious spaces with excellent equipment and recording consoles, whereas the slightly more affordable rooms such as Lion Aboard and The Toyshop still provide plenty of vibe and gear.

Mastering Studios: We also represent some of London's leading mastering studios , which are the homes of established and highly-respected mastering engineers. Between them the suites offer attended and unattended sessions, vinyl, CD and DVD mastering, and even a CD pressing service, meaning that Miloco can actually take your project all the way from writing and pre-prod to manufacture.  Click here to view our Mastering Studios .

If you have any questions about any of these studios or would like to make a booking enquiry please call our bookings team on +44 (0) 207 232 0008 , or email [email protected] .

Record Production

Video interviews & studio tours, air studios, world-class recording studios.

Air Recording Studios - Studio Two featuring SSL G Series console

Studio Two at Air Recording Studios, London

Air recording studios are one of the world's very best recording studios for every kind of music recording, orchestral, pop, rock and post production.

We are huge fans of Air Studios. The staff are very friendly, the food is great. The studios are excellent, they're comfortable, they sound great and the results are top class. You have to think hard about where else you can go to find anything better, anywhere in the World.

Air Studios picture gallery

At Air Studios you know that you'll get the job done and enjoy your time recording and mixing. From the moment you walk in and are greeted by Glen or Maria, you realise that yes, this is an expensive studio but it's how all studios should be. Talking of money, we think it's stunning value and really, even if you're a band without a 'deal' you can still scrape enough for a day or two, and while that may mean you're not going to be doing a 'Dark Side of the Moon' why not record a live studio album?

Air is one of the only places that you can see the biggest names in Pop or Rock working alongside the orchestra recording the next Bond movie. There's no snobbery, just warm enthusiastic people that are really in to recording music and making great records. Rather than wasting weeks in a dingy studio, save your time and take your record to the next level. Honestly, you'll save money in the long run and you will have a record to be proud of too. We try to be impartial and not favour one studio over another but Air has a special place in our hearts.

air studios hall

Air Studios are surely one of the top five recording studios anywhere in the World. Superb recording environments range from the Hall (pictured above) suitable for any orchestral session to the coolest Studio One with its classic custom Neve through to the stunning SSL mix room. Upstairs there are a number of post production studios with Foley and a series of producer rooms.

Sir George Martin

The thing that makes Air so great isn't the gear, it's the building and the staff. Maybe the most important thing and the thing that makes Air feel so special is it's history having been the brain child of the World's most famous producer, Sir George Martin. Read the George Martin interview.

Air moved from their original Oxford Street location to the new Hampstead complex at the beginning of the '90's. Find out more about these fantastic recording studios by reading Sir George Martin's interview here . Heavily involved in the design and building of the new studio facility, Sir George Martin opened AIR Lyndhurst in December 1992 with a gala performance of “Under Milk Wood” in the presence of HRH The Prince of Wales. Since that date AIR Lyndhurst has established itself as Britain's premier scoring facility attracting some of the world's biggest movies scores as well as maintaining its popularity with major classical labels, high profile recording artists and incorporating TV postproduction facilities to rival those in the West End.

Air Studios has recently been bought by Strongroom Studios owner Richard Boote and we are planning an extensive series of new video features in the coming months - Some of the videos linked on these pages are very old and low quality.

'My parents had a car for their dog,' says podcaster

William Hanson and Jordan North are, by their own admission, unlikely best friends.

Hanson is an etiquette expert, who grew up thinking it was "totally normal" that his parents had a spare car for their dog. Jordan is a Burnley lad, whose mother used to bathe him in the kitchen sink.

But the pair hit it off when they met in 2010, and subsequently launched a comedy podcast, Help I Sexted My Boss, assisting listeners with modern day dilemmas.

That podcast is now coming to the big screen.

Hanson and North's live show at the London Palladium on Tuesday night will be broadcast into 400 cinemas across the UK, Ireland and European cities. It's thought to be the first time a British podcast has done this.

  • Jordan North to replace Roman Kemp as Capital host
  • Is the 'have-a-go' podcaster era coming to an end?
  • How podcasts went from unlistenable to unmissable

When we meet at a recording studio in central London, they are midway through rehearsals for their tour.

"I'm super nervous," North said about the tour. "I get terrible stage fright before."

That might seem surprising, given North is a seasoned radio presenter. But Hanson explains that in a radio studio, you can't see your listeners, whereas during a live show, they are right in front of you. North nods in agreement.

The tour sold out in just three hours. The aim of taking it into cinemas is to ensure fans - better known as G&Divas - can "still be a part of it," North said.

The show hasn't been lapped up at all cinemas. North feels particularly vexed that it's not selling well in Accrington, as it's just down the road from where he is from.

But overall, it's been well received in places as far apart as Burnley ("no surprise," says Hanson) and Exeter.

The pair first met at BBC Radio 5 Live's studio in Manchester. North was doing work experience, and Hanson had come into the studio for an interview.

They met again a few months later at a party.

North said his housemate warned him he wouldn't like Hanson "as he's a bit posh". The housemate also gave Hanson a similar warning, telling him North was "a bit rough around the edges".

But they found common ground, helped - they say - by a shared sense of humour.

In 2018, they launched their podcast. Both say they've never themselves sexted their bosses, despite the title of the podcast. "I've always been freelance, I would have had to sext myself," Hanson said.

But the idea behind it was to encourage listeners to share their problems, which the duo then try and offer solutions to.

They get dilemmas such as what to do if you've inadvertently shared sex toys with family members, but also general questions of etiquette such as whether it's acceptable to delete your ex from social media.

Today, the podcast has more than three million downloads a month.

Taking it into cinemas is an "interesting" step, says Joseph Evans, an analyst at media research firm Enders Analysis.

"Podcasts continue to grow, in terms of popularity, and now we're seeing these new innovations - first you had the live streams, and now they're coming to cinemas too," he told BBC News.

Evans said you can see why a cinema format could work. "Podcasters are very community oriented as a medium. So with cinemas, you get the communal experience, you're together with fans at the same time."

But he added: "For many, the appeal of a live event is being in the same room as the podcasters, so we shall see if this new format works."

Hanson and North think that having two hosts from very different backgrounds has helped them bring in a wider audience.

"A lot of podcasts, it's mainly people that are middle class who listen to them, that live in metropolitan cities like London and Manchester," North said. "What I'm proud of with Sexted is that it's a lot of working class people listening to it as well."

Hanson adds: "The two sides are laughing in a respectful way at the other."

Both Hanson and North are also the first to laugh at their own experiences.

Hanson shares an anecdote about how, when he was younger, his parents bought a car for their dog, Dido.

His parents already had several cars, but wanted a separate one for Dido to travel in, to avoid the other cars getting messy, he explained.

"Growing up I thought that was totally normal, and that was what everyone does, and now I realise it's completely ridiculous."

"And I thought it was totally normal to be bathed in the kitchen sink," said North.

"I'd come in, and [my mum] would be getting my brothers ready for bed in the kitchen sink," he said.

"Which, when you look back now..." he trails off, with a laugh.

'Gen Z are into etiquette'

North recently left BBC Radio 1 to become the host of Capital Radio's breakfast show. "I can't tell you how much I'm enjoying it," he said. When the offer came to move, "it was too good to turn down," he added.

Hanson, meanwhile, runs The English Manner, an etiquette training institute. In recent years, he has become a viral sensation on TikTok where he shares his etiquette tips and advice with a Gen-Z audience.

His persona is exactly the same in real life. When he accidentally spills some water on me, he apologises profusely. "Oh dear, I seem to have watered your hand."

He says etiquette used to be seen as "rules to belittle someone". Whereas his approach is "just about being nice to someone and having self respect. And I think Gen Z are actually more into that, and are more socially liberal and relaxed than previous generations".

The pair say working together hasn't taken a toll on their friendship. They have also learnt a lot from each other.

"I make no secret I have learnt so much from William," said North. "It might be when I meet new people, how to shake their hand properly, eye contact's really important, how to remember people's names as I'm always really terrible at them."

Meanwhile Hanson, for his part, credits Jordan with making him more easy-going, including towards the more salacious elements of their podcast.

"I'm so much less uptight," he said, before laughing. "I suppose that gives you a rough idea of how uptight I was in the first place."

Help I Sexted My Boss Live will be in cinemas across the UK & Ireland, plus select European cities, on Tuesday.

Away from podcasting, Jordan North is also a well known radio presenter
