Maritime Colleges: A Valuable Road Less Traveled
The life you've been waiting for may be out to sea! Learn more about maritime colleges and see if one of these specialized schools could be right for you.

The coffee we drink; the televisions we watch; the cars we drive. These are just some of the goods carried by ships to destinations near and far. However, how these items get to us is rarely thought about. The grounding of the Ever Given —one of the world’s largest ships carrying containers filled with cargo—in the Suez Canal this spring brought to light the importance of the maritime industry. How important? Over 90% of the world’s goods are transported by sea on tankers, bulk carriers, and containerships.
As a result, the Maritime Administration (MARAD), a US Department of Transportation agency that manages the country’s waterborne transportation system, has established a mission “to foster, promote, and develop the maritime industry of the United States to meet the nation’s economic and security needs. This means MARAD is responsible for training and educating the next generation of mariners to carry out and improve the quality of US maritime operations at sea and ashore, everything from shipbuilding to port operations to cybersecurity.” The agency further states that “studying merchant marine operations at the university level is a core component of MARAD’s education strategy.” But to do that, students need to know more about maritime colleges.
What are maritime colleges?
There are several colleges that have been established with the purpose of educating and training students for careers in the global marine transportation industry. Students at these schools take courses in marine engineering and marine transportation as well as other areas in the business of shipping. Spread out across the country, the list of maritime colleges includes:
- California State University Maritime Academy in Vallejo, California
- Great Lakes Maritime Academy at Northwestern Michigan College in Traverse City, Michigan
- Maine Maritime Academy in Castine, Maine
- Massachusetts Maritime Academy in Buzzards Bay, Massachusetts
- State University of New York (SUNY) Maritime College in Throggs Neck, New York
- Texas A&M University’s Maritime Academy in Galveston, Texas
- United States Merchant Marine Academy in Kings Point, New York
Although each of these schools has a maritime industry focus, they’re separate institutions with different requirements and academic offerings. As a result, students should take a careful look at each school to ensure they find the college that’s the best fit for them.

A unique college experience
The US Merchant Marine Academy is one of five federal service academies . Located in Kings Point, New York, on the Long Island Sound, MARAD’s flagship Merchant Marine Academy was established to provide an ongoing supply of highly trained merchant mariners. Midshipmen can choose from one of five highly demanding majors: Marine Transportation, Maritime Logistics & Security, Marine Engineering, Marine Engineering Systems, and Marine Engineering & Shipyard Management. Kings Point requires a congressional nomination before students can apply for admission. Interested students should reach out to their congressman or senator early in their junior year of high school to enquire about specific deadlines to be considered for a nomination.
A unique element to this college experience is the Academy’s “Sea Year,” in which midshipmen spend several months during their sophomore and junior years on a variety of US flagged merchant vessels, visiting an average of 18 countries. Applying their academic learnings on a ship—a floating internship—provides students with the hands-on experience they’ll need as merchant mariners. In return for a service obligation, midshipmen receive tuition , room and board, textbooks, and uniforms at no cost. A small personal services fee is charged for items such as a computer, transportation costs, and other miscellaneous expenses. Graduation from Kings Point results in a Bachelor of Science degree, a US Coast Guard license as a merchant marine officer, and an officer’s commission in the US Armed Forces.

State maritime academies
Students may prefer to attend state maritime academies when considering four-year undergraduate programs. These schools operate within state universities and don’t require a congressional endorsement for admission. SUNY Maritime College—located in historic Fort Schuyler with views of New York City—provides the option of obtaining one of 10 undergraduate degrees, including International Transportation & Trade, Engineering , and Naval Architecture. In addition to their degree, students can also choose a program that allows them to pursue a US Coast Guard deck or engine license. According to the school, “students pursuing a license must be part of the Regiment of Cadets” and take part in summer sea terms on the Empire State VI training ship. SUNY Maritime graduates don’t have a military obligation unless they participate in a Reserve Officer Training Corps (ROTC) program.
At Cal Maritime, students are required to wear uniforms, but it isn’t a “military” academy. The school does stress “similar values as the military academies such as leadership and accountability,” but students aren’t required to join the military after graduation. A part of the 23-campus California State University system, Cal Maritime sits on a picturesque waterfront campus, serving about 1,000 students. The school has a 500-foot vessel, the Training Ship Golden Bear , that’s used for its annual training cruise. “She serves as a floating classroom/laboratory where classroom concepts in marine transportation, engineering, and technology are practiced and applied,” according to the school. Cal Maritime boasts a 94% employment rate within three months of graduation.
Across the country at the Massachusetts Maritime Academy, Rear Admiral Francis X. McDonald, the school’s President, states that “the Academy is known for specialized STEM and Business academic programs and majors that are in high demand.” Mass Maritime has seven undergraduate degree programs, including International Maritime Business; Marine Science, Safety & Environmental Protection; and Emergency Management. Experiential learning is a focus with on-campus simulators and labs, internships, co-ops, and sea terms. Students can even spend a six-week, hands-on voyage aboard the Academy’s Training Ship Kennedy .

An outstanding value
With education costs and student loan debt at all-time highs, it’s important for students and their families to identify colleges and degrees that provide potential for career success. The maritime academies are consistently included among the top schools on PayScale’s “Best Value Colleges” list. USMMA is ranked third, just behind the highly selective Harvey Mudd College and Massachusetts Institute of Technology . SUNY Maritime College is ranked sixth overall, while Cal Maritime and the Massachusetts Maritime Academy are in the top 25. These college options are a great return on investment for a unique experience and a high potential for a rewarding career.

High School Class of 2022
I wanted a school that wasn't too far away from home and could provide me with a full-ride scholarship. CollegeXpress helped me put into perspective the money I had to pay to attend those schools, which ultimately drove me to choose to attend a community college first to get used to being in college before transferring to the University of Michigan–Ann Arbor, one of the colleges I was able to research further on CollegeXpress.
High School Class of 2019
My college search began at CollegeXpress. Due to this helpful tool, I was able to gather a lot of information to guide my college planning decisions. Through CollegeXpress, I was also able to apply to several scholarships to help pay for my tuition. I would definitely recommend this website to anyone who wants to explore colleges and get more information from admission experts, counselors, and real students.

CollegeXpress has helped me learn about an abundance of scholarships available to me and my situation. I was able to do research for colleges in my best interest with your website. I've had multiple colleges email me and offer me multiple scholarships and things of that nature because of this website! Thank you so much for uploading scholarships I didn’t even know existed, even if my life took a huge turn and I wasn’t able to go to college straight out of high school. CollegeXpress helped me a lot in high school to be even more motivated to get into my dream college (which I did, by the way). I'm looking forward to using the materials CollegeXpress has kindly provided me for free to look for scholarships to help pay for college.

High School Student
I joined CollegeXpress just a few months ago. I had been struggling with severe anxiety, causing me to not be able to tour schools and make sure a college would be perfect for me. I came across CollegeXpress one day when I was searching for colleges online, and it completely changed the game. I was easily able to choose colleges that would suit me, and I also entered a few giveaways! Thank you so much!

MAINE MARITIME ACADEMY
College tour season is about to kick off. Here are 10 tips from college tour guides to have a successful campus visit.
- As spring starts, colleges around the country welcome parents and students to campus for tours.
- College tour guides want people to arrive on time, ask the right questions, and have fun.
- They also recommend students take the tour on their own, without their parents.
Spring break is right around the corner, and for many high school students and their parents, that means many will be hitting the road to tour colleges around the country.
To make the most of your visit, Business Insider spoke with college students and tour guides. They know the campuses like the back of their hands, and they know how to walk backward.
Here are the dos and don'ts of college tours from student guides.
1. Get there with no time to spare, but don't be late
You won't get points for arriving early, so try to arrive on time. But if you do happen to arrive late , there's no need to worry.
"If something comes up and you are late, ask your guide what you missed once the tour finishes," Skyler Kawecki-Muonio, a senior at Sarah Lawrence College, told BI. "They will happily fill you in."
2. Dress to impress, but don't sacrifice comfort
It's important to look nice, but you don't have to don a jacket and tie. Tour-goers should put their best foot forward with a sturdy pair of walking shoes , and don't forget to dress for the weather.
"At Fairleigh Dickinson, tours go out rain or shine, so make sure to wear clothes that will keep you warm," Emily Bone, class of '25, said.
3. Don't forget to sign in, but skip the CV
Most schools have a check-in desk where you'll receive a campus map and other literature. But don't bother furnishing schools with your portfolio.
"Students can leave their resumes at home," Henry Millar, a senior at William & Mary, said. "Tour guides generally do not have any sway in the admissions process whatsoever, so feel free to save the paper."
4. Pay attention on the tour, but do it solo if possible
Some schools offer the option of letting parents and kids take separate tours, which has advantages.
"Get excited about your child's potential future in college, but give them some space to see what they think of that school on their own," Nathan Weisbrod, a junior at Wesleyan University, told BI.
Students can comfortably ask questions without a parent present and compare notes afterward.
5. Ask all your questions, but avoid personal interrogations
This is the time to inquire about any aspect of campus life , and don't feel shy about speaking up.
"Tour guides love getting questions because it allows us to cater the tour, especially in small groups, toward the needs and interests of the families on that specific tour," Halle Spataro, class of '24 at Bucknell University, said.
But some topics are off-limits, so don't ask your tour guide about their SAT/ACT scores or what they wrote about in their essay.
6. Speak up, but let the student take the lead
Parents may be tempted to raise their hand again and again, but this tour is about the student, so there should be space to let them shine.
"Try to take the backseat — or the passenger seat — but refrain from driving all of your child's interactions," Julian Jacklin, class of '25 at Reed College, said. "Students who feel they can own that experience usually ask the most questions and engage with the tour more."
7. Say thanks, but don't leave with questions unanswered
Maybe your guide didn't hear you, or your kid was reluctant to speak up. You can still get the information you want before leaving.
"There's a lot of information students are getting that day and a lot of excitement with being in a new place, which can make people forget to ask certain questions," Lorenzo Mars, a junior at Pepperdine University, said.
Therefore, get your tour guide's email address so that you can follow up afterward.
8. You may know exactly what school is right, but keep an open mind
Don't be surprised if a city-living kid is suddenly intrigued by a small-town setting.
"The college search and college experience are all about getting to know yourself better and growing, so on a tour, students have to trust themselves and their judgment of the 'world' they've just stepped into," Thomas Elias, class of '24 at University of Scranton, said.
9. Take in as much as you can, but remember to have fun
Sure, preparing for the next four years can be scary and stressful. But it's also an exciting milestone, so enjoy the ride.
"These tours serve as great opportunities to learn more about colleges — along with their cities, culture, and people," Connor Gee, a sophomore at the University of Mississippi, said. "Have fun with it!"
10. Weigh the pros and cons of the school, but don't stop there
Your tour may be over, but you can still learn other ways to immerse yourself in college life .
"See if the school offers additional experiences, like eating in the cafeteria or attending a class," Emily Balda, class of '24 at Seton Hall University, said. "Consider it 'food for thought.'"

Two Explosions Near Vessel off Yemen's Coast, UK Maritime Office Says
Two Explosions Near Vessel off Yemen's Coast, UK Maritime Office Says
CAIRO (Reuters) - The United Kingdom Maritime Trade Operations (UKMTO) said on Sunday a vessel 40 nautical miles south of al Mukha in Yemen had reported two explosions nearby, adding that the vessel and its crew were safe and proceeding to their next port of call.
Authorities are investigating, UKMTO said.
Houthi militants, who are backed by Iran, have been targeting vessels off the Yemen's coast in what they said is a show of solidarity with the Palestinians being killed in Israel's war on Gaza.

Following the news that more names are set to emerge in relation to the election date betting scandal, here is a quick summary of what we know so far:
It emerged overnight that Laura Saunders, the Tory candidate for Bristol North West, is facing an investigation by the Gambling Commission.
Ms Saunders is married to Tony Lee, who is the party's director of campaigns.
The Gambling Commission has not commented on individual cases.
But it said today that "currently the commission is investigating the possibility of offences concerning the date of the election".
The Conservative Party said they had been contacted by the commission about a "small number" of individuals.
Ms Saunders' solicitor later said on her behalf that she "will be cooperating with the Gambling Commission" investigation, but added she is "considering legal action against the BBC" and other outlets "who infringe her privacy rights".

Sky News understands more names are set to emerge in relation to the election date betting scandal.
A gambling industry source said: "Yes to more names. Cops not involved."
It emerged that one of Mr Sunak's close protection police officers had been arrested over alleged bets on the timing of the election.
Sky News understands several bets were placed, with at least one of them being a three-figure sum.
Read more on this story here:
Craig Williams, a close parliamentary aide of Rishi Sunak, admitted to placing a "flutter" on the date of the election "weeks ago".
This is reported to have happened just before the prime minister surprised many by calling a vote for 4 July, with Mr Williams said to have staked a £100.
The Conservative Party said it was a personal matter.
Mr Williams is the party's candidate for Montgomeryshire and Glyndwr.

Laura Saunders, the Conservative candidate who is facing a probe over allegedly betting on the timing of the election has said she is "considering legal action".
Ms Saunders "will be cooperating with the Gambling Commission" investigation, her solicitor said on her behalf.
They added that she is "considering legal action against the BBC" and other outlets "who infringe her privacy rights".
The statement said: "It is inappropriate to conduct any investigation of this kind via the media, and doing so risks jeopardising the work of the Gambling Commission and the integrity of its investigation.
"The publication of the BBC's story is premature and is a clear infringement of Ms Saunders' privacy rights.
"She is considering legal action against the BBC and any other publishers who infringe her privacy rights."
We're gearing up for a busy evening for the Politics Hub.
We'll have our show with Sophy Ridge from 7pm and then from 8pm the leaders of the four biggest political parties in the UK will take part in a BBC Question Time leaders special.
But before that, here are the main things you need to know:
- Rishi Sunak's campaign has been thrown into fresh turmoil just two weeks before polling day over allegations of betting on the date of the election ;
- The Gambling Commission has said it's considering launching an investigation into a " small number of people" ;
- Laura Saunders is the second Conservative candidate to trigger scrutiny from the watchdog, and says she will co-operate with the investigation but is "considering legal action" against the BBC;
- Ms Saunders is married to Tony Lee - the Conservative director of campaigns - with reports that he as well faces a probe after going on leave from CCHQ;
- And Sky News understands more names are set to emerge .
- Elsewhere, Northern Ireland's Alliance Party has published its general election manifesto , featuring reform of Stormont's devolved structures as a key objective;
- And the Scottish Greens have launched their manifesto too , outlining plans for a wealth tax on the richest people in the UK.
- Coming up this evening , there is a BBC Question Time leaders special;
- Rishi Sunak, Sir Keir Starmer, Sir Ed Davey and John Swinney are all taking part, with Fiona Bruce hosting;
- The leaders will have 30 minutes each to answer questions from the audience, and we'll have live updates here from 8pm;
- Before that, from 7pm Politics Hub With Sophy Ridge will feature a full-length interview with Green Party leader Adrian Ramsay;
- It is the latest in a series of interrogations - with all party chiefs set to feature over the last few weeks of the campaign.
More names are set to emerge in relation to the election date betting scandal, Sky News understands.
A gambling industry source said the police were not involved.
The source said: "Yes to more names. Cops not involved."
It comes after the Gambling Commission said it is looking into allegations around bets made on the date of the election.
The commission is looking into Laura Saunders, the Conservative candidate for Bristol North West.
That came after Rishi Sunak's close parliamentary aide Craig Williams, the Tory candidate for Montgomeryshire and Glyndwr, was revealed to have placed a bet on a July election date three days before it was announced.
And the prime minister's close protection officer has been arrested and suspended over alleged bets about the timing of the election.
What are the laws around gambling with inside knowledge?
By Alix Culbertson , politics reporter
There are strict rules around gambling, with the latest laws updated in the Gambling Act 2005.
Gamblers are not allowed to use inside information to place a bet or to instruct someone else to do so on their behalf.
They are also not allowed to pass inside information on to someone else which they use for betting.
Section 42 of the act deals with cheating and says a person commits an offence if they cheat at gambling or do "anything for the purpose of enabling or assisting another person to cheat at gambling".
It adds: "It is immaterial whether a person who cheats improves his changes of winning anything, or wins anything."
Someone found guilty of cheating can be imprisoned for a maximum of two years and/or fined, or six months in prison for a lesser offence.
By Laura Bundock , correspondent
The Sky News YouGov Voters Panel has reacted overwhelmingly negatively to the alleged insider betting scandal, with some saying it would impact their voting intention.
Our exclusive panel gave snap reaction to the news some Conservative Party candidates are being investigated by the Gambling Commission over alleged bets relating to the date of the general election.
One 2019 Conservative voter said: "This is the final straw."
Another told us it "makes you view the Tories in an even worse position than they currently are".
But among those previous Conservative voters who are considering Reform UK, it's just another "nail in the coffin".
Multiple panellists used that exact phrase.
The Tories are "dead and buried in this election", said another.
One said it felt like Rishi Sunak "doesn't really seem to have any control over them".
Other words that came up included "damaging" and "disgusting", with "unsurprising" another repeated term.
The Sky News YouGov Voters Panel represent over 40 different constituencies and a range of political views.
At the start of the campaign, they were all undecided who to vote for.
The Scottish Greens have launched their manifesto, outlining plans for a wealth tax on the richest people in the UK.
Here's a look at the key points in the 56-page document:
- Introduce a £28bn per year Green New Deal investment programme;
- Implement a wealth tax on the richest people in the UK;
- Stop oil and gas companies from being able to advertise;
- End all subsidies for fossil fuels ;
- Build a zero-carbon transport system ;
- Fully divest all public sector pension funds from fossil fuels;
- Cap the price of food essentials during periods of high inflation to tackle the cost of living crisis;
- Introduce a minimum income guarantee , where the social security system steps in to ensure everyone can meet a good standard of living;
- In the long term bring in a universal basic income ;
- Reform the law on the possession of drugs so it would no longer be an offence;
- Levy a private jet tax of £1,000 per head against those using their own planes to travel to or within the UK;
- Remove the powers of the UK government to block decisions made by the Scottish Parliament;
- Introduce proportional representation to all levels of election in the UK and abolish the House of Lords;
- Extend the vote to 16 and 17-year-olds in all elections and base voting eligibility on residency instead of citizenship, including people with refugee status.
Northern Ireland's Alliance Party has published its general election manifesto, featuring reform of Stormont's devolved structures as a key objective.
Here are the key points from the party's manifesto:
- Alliance wants to reform Stormont, removing the veto power to block decisions and even collapse the institutions ;
- It is also seeking to end the community designation system , which effectively hands blocs of unionists or nationalists a veto in contentious votes in both the Assembly and Executive;
- Instead it proposes an alternative method where controversial votes require a weighted majority to pass ;
- It is also calling for changes to the mandatory coalition system ;
- The party wants to replace the current first minister and deputy first minister titles at Stormont with two joint first ministers to reflect the co-equal status of the jobs;
- The manifesto prioritises securing a new financial deal for Northern Ireland, with an improved funding model for the allocation of Treasury resources to the region;
- Alliance contends Brexit has been "fundamentally destructive" for the UK and is calling for a closer relationship with the EU and a negotiated agreement on veterinary medicines;
- The manifesto also calls for a reform of government spending rules to free up funding to tackle climate change ;
- Alliance is also calling for a new injection of government funding for integrated education ;
- It also argues the voting age should be dropped from 18 to 16 and calls for the end of the first-past-the-post voting system in UK general elections;
- And finally it is also calling for a directly elected House of Lords .
By Alix Culbertson , politics reporter
The Gambling Commission has said it is looking into allegations around bets made on the date of the election.
It comes after Rishi Sunak's close parliamentary aide Craig Williams, the Tory candidate for Montgomeryshire and Glyndwr, was revealed to have placed a bet on a July election date three days before it was announced.
Boris Johnson's "honest, unrestrained and deeply revealing" memoir will be published later this year.
Publisher HarperCollins announced the book, titled Unleashed, will be published on 10 October and will cover Mr Johnson's time as London mayor and prime minister.
"I am honoured that HarperCollins is publishing my personal account of the huge realignment that took place in UK politics in the last 15 years - and what may lie ahead," Mr Johnson said.
"So stand by for my thoughts on Britain's future to explode over the publishing world like a much shaken bottle of champagne."
In January 2023, Mr Johnson's register of interests revealed he had received a £510,000 advance for his memoirs, well above the £7,674 advance his successor Liz Truss got for her book 10 Years To Save The West.
Since leaving parliament last year after several scandals, Mr Johnson has been doing gigs on the speaking circuit and writing a column for the Daily Mail.
He has recently featured in videos endorsing numerous Conservative candidates in the general election and has put his name to letters sent to thousands of voters urging them not to vote for Nigel Farage's Reform UK.
Tonight the leaders of the four biggest political parties in the UK will sit down for 30 minutes each to answer questions from a live studio audience on the BBC's Question Time Leaders' Special.
The show will start at 8pm, and we'll have live updates and analysis from our chief political correspondent Jon Craig throughout.
The Liberal Democrats' leader Sir Ed Davey will appear first, followed by the SNP's John Swinney, then it will be Sir Keir Starmer and Prime Minister Rishi Sunak.

From the moment you step on campus, you’ll understand why the University of Idaho has been named the most beautiful college in the state . Iconic buildings are connected by tree-filled green spaces, walkable paths and welcoming plazas. Don’t be surprised if you’re greeted with a friendly smile and wave from a peer or professor, especially on the historic Hello Walk.
Our community extends way beyond campus. Moscow is a tight-knit town of about 25,000 people, full of vibrant activities, businesses and events that love to welcome college students. You’ll find incredible opportunities for recreation and exploration in the surrounding area, too.
Want to see it all for yourself? Plan your campus visit today .
Life on Campus
Whether you live in the residence halls , a fraternity or sorority or off-campus, you’ll be minutes away from your classes and places to study and play.
There’s always something to do: grab a snack in the Idaho Student Union Building , check out a book from the U of I Library 's more than 2 million holdings, take in the beauty of nature in the Arboretum and Botanical Garden , watch a play in the Hartung Theater or a game in the ICCU Arena , take a fitness class in the Student Recreation Center , catch a Vandal Entertainment -sponsored concert and so much more.
A True College Town
Venture only a few minutes off campus and you’ll be in downtown Moscow. It’s no wonder Seattle Magazine called it “a college town with a soul that shines through year-round” — the calendar is packed with festivals, cultural events and community gatherings like our award-winning farmers’ market on Main Street.
No matter what you like to do, you’ll find an activity to fall in love with . Experience a local art museum or theater production, dance to a live band at a street fair or a local coffee shop, dress in period garb for the Moscow Renaissance Fair or enter a local 5K run or bike race. Volunteer opportunities abound with local nonprofits that support the arts, sustainability, youth and children, the LGBTQ community, health care and more.
And did we mention food? You’ll find a huge co-op with natural and organic options, cozy pubs and coffee shops with Pacific Northwest vibes, locally owned restaurants with cuisines from around the world, and funky hole-in-the-wall spots for affordable college-town snacks.
A Hub For Outdoor Adventure
Moscow sits at the heart of the Palouse, a one-of-a-kind landscape of rolling hills and scenic vistas. We’re surrounded by mountains, lakes and rivers full of opportunities for adventure , whether you love hiking, biking, camping, fishing or just taking in a gorgeous sunset. You’ll experience all four seasons in North Idaho, too — so bring your sunscreen for a late-summer rafting trip and your parka for skiing, snowboarding or ice skating in the winter.
Gain outdoor skills and connect with other adventurous students through the U of I Outdoor Program . Want to take your own excursion? Rent equipment through the Outdoor Rental Center .
