randy brandt travel

Our little travel podcast is designed to inform and entertain our friends and family. Since our families are pretty well defined (although Randy has six new grandkids since late 2020), we want to make new friends who will be dedicated listeners on the first and third Saturday of every month.

Why listen? We have both traveled a lot and with our teaching experience, we can educate and inspire you to enjoy our amazing world and the people in it. As history lovers, we'll bring that background to our stories as well. Most podcasts are free, so you have nothing to lose other than time. Then again, they say that time is money, so maybe you are risking something. Take a chance--it'll be worth it!

  • The Feature We discuss our primary topic, sometimes with a guest.
  • Randy's Ramblings Shutting him up is the hard part.
  • Ben's Banter Ben begged for his own special segment.
  • Travel Tip Something useful that we've learned, usually the hard way.

We try to provide a balance between North American and international locations.

Co-host Ben Copeland is an American professor from Dallas who likes to read, travel, and watch hockey. Co-host Randy Brandt is a Canadian programmer from Denver who likes to read, travel, and play hockey. Learn more about them in Episode 001 .

Announcer Stephanie Copeland is a professional from Dallas who likes Ben, their daughter, and introducing podcast segments.

Patreon is a membership platform where creators are rewarded by you, dear patron. Why? It could be simply love and appreciation, but more often it is motivated by special exclusive episodes and rewards. Please visit our Patreon page to learn more.

What's the photo of Ghent on the Home page all about? I'm glad you asked. That was Randy's best iPhone X photo (he has an iPhone 14 Pro Max now) and it shows St. Bavos Cathedral, the site of the opening scene in George Clooney's Monuments Men movie. Watch it if you like art, history, World War II, or movies based on true stories.

What's with the titles? Randy writes most of them. Sadly, he is afflicted with dad-joke syndrome inherited from his father, Bernie Brandt. As they say, Ignosce illi. Certamen est realis. Or in the common tongue, "Forgive him--the struggle is real."

Isup adventure across the country with randy brandt, taking yourself on an isup adventure.

We recently had the pleasure of tagging along on an iSUP adventure across 7 US and 2 Canadian National Parks. It is all thanks to Mr. Randy Brandt of California through an exclusive interview. Randy brought the NIXY Newport G2 through his trip towards Canada. He paddled in the gorgeous blue waters of Eunice Lake , Lake Colchuck , Phelps Lake , Jenny Lake , Delta Lake , Moraine Lake , Bow Lake and more! Maybe we can learn a few things about traveling with an iSUP from Randy through this interview.

Why the desire to travel with an iSUP?

When we asked Randy why he had chosen to take along an inflatable paddle board, his answer was simple. A little while ago, Randy traveled to Sequoia National Park, he asked himself a great question. "How can I get to the other side of the lake without hiking around the park?" It can take quite a bit of time to get to the other side without crossing the waters. However, it took very little time for Randy to realize he can do it with an iSUP! As soon as he arrived home he started his research for an inflatable paddle board for his next big adventure. After the search Randy went for a lightweight durable paddle board he can put into a backpack to hike around with and bought the Newport G2.

Man on iSUP

How much experie nce w ith the inflatable paddle board?

It may be surprising the experience Randy has had with the paddle board considering his grand trip to Canada. His experience with the inflatable paddle board was a good 7 months! What makes this even more interesting is that Randy has done mostly recreational hiking prior to this backpacking journey. We are certainly impressed by this and fortunately Randy's fitness background has helped him through this iSUP adventure. He has learned to pack only the essentials to fit into the NIXY backpack while he hiked throughout but it didn't come easy. I proceeded to ask Randy how much preparation he had ahead of this trip and his exact words were "not a whole lot". Randy has shown us true spontaneity and optimism we can surely attribute in our lives and it definitely shows in the pictures below.

Nose of Nixy board on a lake near mountains

The favorite part of the trip?

Besides paddling with an iSUP in the many lakes we may or may not get a chance to see in our lifetime, Randy's most favorable moment was meeting new people. He was moved by international travelers who paid a visit to North America in order to see what mother nature had to offer on our side of the continent. Although interacting with travelers was his favorite, he was also able to enjoy the fitness and exploration parts of it. Other times he had the chance to catch up with family and friends throughout the states.

Man on iSUP paddling around the lake

Any words or suggestions for others?

What would Randy say to someone who wanted to go on an iSUP adventure of their own? "It is not so much of where you are going but how you get there. Appreciate where you live. Don't be afraid to get out of your comfort zone. Don't make excuses as to why you can't do something, tell yourself the opposite and it will all work out. Make time for yourself". All in all, it is refreshing to step out of your comfort zone and work through your adversities. You will learn and grow much more through an experience of a lifetime such as one like this.

Nose of Nixy board on crystal clear lake

Where to next?

Where can we find Randy next to inspire us to get out there on our paddle board ourselves? Well, he's looking to get out to the lakes in the Yosemite National Park, 3 national parks in Utah and 1 in Nevada all in a duration of a week! We can't wait to follow him on that iSUP adventure and write another blog living vicariously through him in the near future!

Upon assuming the office of Foreign Minister of the Federal Republic of Germany on 1 December 1966, foreign trips become an essential part of work for Willy Brandt. Mostly they involve meetings with his closest allies, the USA, Great Britain and France and also with other partners in the framework of NATO and the European Community. New destinations in South America, Africa and Asia are also included in his travel programme.

During his term as Chancellor from 1969 to 1974, Willy Brandt continues to make frequent trips to Washington, London and Paris. In the course of pursuing his new Ostpolitik , he travels for the first time to the GDR and the Soviet Union. Brandt also pays state visits to Poland, Czechoslovakia, and Israel. He almost always spends his summer holidays with his family in Norway. There are as well the numerous trips which Brandt undertakes as Chancellor or as SPD chairman within the Federal Republic and to West Berlin. However, those are not listed here.

Brandt, and Brezhnev Both Took Big Risks to Heal the Wounds of 24 Years

By David Binder Special to The New York Times

  • May 19, 1973

randy brandt travel

BONN, May 18 — Leonid I. Brezhnev's journey from Moscow to Bonn in his big Ilyushin jet lasted three hours today. But in another sense the trip took 24 years.

For the West German’ republic was conceived in fear of and hostility toward the Soviet Union and in dedication to alliance with Western neighbors when it was founded in 1949. To be sure, Moscow and Bonn took up diplomaiic ties in,1951 But Chancellor Konrad Adenauer did this mainly to obtain the release of 30,000 Germans held prisoner since the end of World War II and he.made certain that official relations with the Soviet Union remained icy.

Not until Willy Brandt, Mr. Brezhnev's host, became Chancellor in October, 1969, did prospects for normal relations between the Soviet Union and West Germany open up.

The changes taking place since then have been almost dazzling to older Germans and Russians accustomed to the mutual national suspicions and grievances: cessation of polemics and then, less than a year after Mr. Brandt came to power, completion of a treaty in Moscow expressing the de(sire to improve political, economic and cultural ties.

Mr. Brandt flew, to the Soviet Union twice to pledge fulfillment of the treaty in the form of parliamentary ratification.

Brandt Gave Up Majority

Both Mr. Brandt and Mr. Brezhnev, the Soviet Communist party leader, took considerable domestic political risks to bring off the improvement in relations. Mr. Brandt forfeited his parliamentary majority through defection from his coalition in the ratification vote just a year ago.

Mr. Brezhnev evidently faced considerable opposition to his concept of Soviet policy in his own Politburo and in the Communist leadership of East Germany. With his encouragement, the recalcitrant Walter Ulbricht was replaced by the pragmatic Erich Honecker as party chief in East Germany two years ago. But it was not until this spring that Mr. Brezhnev could remove his own conservative opponents, notably Pyotr Y. Shelest, from the Politburo.

Mr. Brandt and Mr. Brezhnev apparently had a meeting of minds during their encounter in the Crimea in September, 1971, stimulated undoubtedly by the similarity of their intentions of easing hostility in Central Europe and possibly also by the domestic difficulties each had in bringing off the rather daring venture.

Part of Larger Picture

For the Bonn‐Moscow effort is ‘only one part, but a very basic part, of the general EastWest relaxation, including the treaty between West Germany and Poland of 1970, the fourpower Berlin agreement of 1971, the East‐West German basic treaty of 1972, the first. United States‐Soviet pact on limiting. strategic arms of last year, the beginning of talks in Vienna on European troop reductions and in Helsinki on European cooperation.

Mr. Brezhnev and Mr. Brandt have been directly involved in almost all of these projects and they are spending a lot of their four days together reviewing what has been accomplished and what has to be done next.

The other dimension of the visit involves West Germany's future relationship with the Soviet Union as a European neighbor and partner.

For Mr. Brezhnev will be the first Russian leader to come to the Rhine as a peacemaker since 1814, when Gen. Ferdinand von Wintzingerode led a corps of Cossacks into Diisseldorf in pursuit of Napoleon. German paintings of that event show the Russians welcomed by the Rhinelanders as liberators.

There are West Germans who view the Brezhnev visit with mistrust, believing at worst that he hopes to ‘draw their country into the Soviet Orbit or at least pry it away from its postwar reliance on the security guarantee of the United States armed forces.

But any serious person who has listened to Soviet diplomats and journalists in recent, days on the subject of the Watergate affair may be persuaded that the. Brezhnev leadership, wants the United States to stay strong and to stay in Eurepe, particularly in West Germany. What is more, they. want Willy Brandt, a man they trust, to remain as Chancellor and strong one unimpeded by ‘a radical young left or the official West German Communist party, loyal to Moscow.

Last Sunday Mr. Brezhnev said in Berlin that he was going to Bonn in fulfillment of his party's “peace. program,” and Mr. Brandt echoed the view that the visit represented a further step in’ his “peace policy.”

But they apprOach peace from different vantage ‘points.

Mr. Brandt sees his policy as a peaceful means of overcoming the’ pains and tribulations of Germany's postwar division into two states the long way around: by way of cooperation between the, two European blocs in East and West or, as he calls it, by “arching over the national division.”

‘Acceptance’ of Moscow

Mr. Brezhnev sees his “peace program” as a means of con, solidating the Soviet Union's position In Central Europe in terms’ of present‐day frontiers and political allegiances. But he also wants “acceptance” of the Soviet Union in the West as a full‐fledged and responsible “European state,” to use Foreign Minister ‘Andrei A. Gromyko's phrase.

Mr. Brezhney's presence in Bonn is therefore an expression of what Bozidar Thick, the long‐time correspondent in Germany of Yugoslavia's respected Politika, recently described as “the Russian belief in having strong presence everywhere in the world.”

In an interview published in Stern magazine this week, Mr. Brezhnev indicated that he wanted to see what had taken place here and what consequences he should draw from the developments in that part of Germany the Soviet Army did not conquer.

‘Moral‐Political Role’

In the interview, purportedly his first with a Western publication, Mr. Brezhnev also stressed “the special moralpolitical role” of the BonnMoscow treaty, and the “completely new atmosphere in mutual relations.”

Mr. Brandt also sees West Germany's relationship with the Russians in moral terms, in terms of the need to end.the decades of hatred and recrimination between the two countries and substitute constructive ties.

In this respect, the Brezhney visit on the Rhine offers a new beginning in an historic and often bloody relationship.

On the practical level, the visit will inaugurate a new phase of intensified bilateral cooperation in industry, culture and transportation, to, be sealed in treaties signed by Mr. Brezhnev here tomorrow.

West Germany ‘is already the Soviet Union's No. 1 Western trade partner, with a volume of $1:2‐billion dollars last year and possibilities of more. Apparently both sides are interested in making it more.
