Chobe National Park
Chobe Princess boat cruise
Lodge style Intimate cruise
Flooded with calmness
Have you ever dreamt of a private villa on the water? This might become reality when you step aboard one of the three Chobe Princesses. With no set itinerary and only a small number of guests per boat, staying here feels like being on your own houseboat – and a very well appointed one, that is. Book the entire boat for your family or group of friends and relax during this intimate river safari. Open your curtains to sensational sunrises, feast on amazing meals while enjoying a 360° Botswana view and slip into the slow rhythm of the river. The crew will pamper you with unaffected warmth and generosity, doing whatever they can to make this trip memorable. And as if their hospitality alone isn’t something to remember, the wildlife viewing will definitely remain in your memories for a lifetime. As you drift down the Chobe River, you will be exposed to incredible game viewing from several mooring points along the Chobe and Zambezi Rivers. Hop on the smaller tender boats and view wildlife from the water: a completely different experience from a game drive, as animals are more relaxed and at ease.
The Pride of the Zambezi accommodates passengers in five elegant en-suite cabins located on the lower deck and one en-suite cabin on the top deck. Each cabin can be made up as a twin or double, with fans, mosquito gauze and built-in cupboards. Wake up to be perfectly positioned for game viewing from the comfort of your own room. Elephants taking a dust bed, hippos going for their morning swim: you will sit front row. Tastefully and contemporary decorated, the rooms are deeply calming and feel deliciously remote. When your mind is at ease and disconnected from our fast Western world, it is time to discover the main areas of the boat. The middle deck is the heart of the boat with a fully equipped bar, comfortable lounge and dining area. This deck offers complete protection from the elements if needed, as well as a flat screen television and a plunge pool. The top deck features sun loungers (a great place to spot wildlife while sipping a cold drink). All areas boast incredible views while the boat cruises down the river.
Activities on the Chobe Princess
Staying on board of a Chobe Princess means that you are the captain of your river safari cruise. No tight schedules, no noisy engines, just the tranquillity of the ancient river. While sailing the Chobe River, the houseboat its top deck provides an ideal platform from which to view Chobe National Park’s abundant wildlife. In addition, each houseboat has a minimum of three smaller tender boats for use on a number of daily excursions that may take your fancy: gaze at four meter long crocodiles, laying still as tree trunks, witness a spectacular hippo fight, or mark off over 500 bird species found in this wetland paradise. After watching some of the magnificent wildlife, you can try your hand at landing a tiger fish, or capture Africa's unique beauty on a photographic safari. For those seeking more physical activity: go on a village walk or guided walk safari, as you will soon discover the mindfulness of walking on African soil. As mentioned earlier: your itinerary is a personal affair. Whenever you feel like lazing on a deck chair with a good read, grab that opportunity. It is all about finding your own flow.
Tripadvisor comments Chobe Princess
Having come from Kruger Park, I wasn't sure if I could top the experience - but I was wrong! We got so close to the crocodiles and hippos, and saw separate groups of elephants crossing the river. Such an amazing experience. Don't miss out on doing this. ch0775 from London, UK
The boat cruises are an excellent way to view animals up close as they take you to where the animals are. Elephants, crocodiles and buffalo were just a few of the animals we were able to get close to. The sunset on the Chobe River at the end of the cruise was just spectacular. The boat cruise is definitely a must for every visitor to Chobe National Park. Anne N from Perth, Australia
The boat is comfortable (including AC) and a relaxed break from the full programme you get in landbased safari camps. Wildlife slides past while cruising, the excursions in the small boats are quiet and calm, and starting time of the morning excursion is negotiable. However, do not expect spectacular wildlife experience like seeing big predators, but large herds of elephant and buffaloe, river crossing elephants and birds are also impressing sights. Marj0leinT from Utrecht, the Netherlands

Our Travelers Say
We travelled with Falcon Safaris in Zimbabwe and Botswana for 16 days. Falcon designed a wonderful trip with private guide to the most interesting sites in both countries. The organization of the whole trip was excellent, flights within the country, accommodation and activites. The guides were very knowledgable and told us a lot about the countries, their history, people, economy and much more. We visited the Great Zimbabwe Ruins, the Victoria Falls Tour and a number of national parks in both countries. Rhino tracking was a real adventure! We had tremendous further game drives and saw very many animals - we did the Big Five. We had much more Victoria Falls Activities than planned and enjoyed very much.We strongly recommend Falcon Safaris to everyone planning a trip to Southern Africa and East Africa.
Wonderful trip to Zimbabwe and Botswana with excellent organization and very competent guides
Our Consultant Vimbai was very helpful and accommodating. We stayed at the Elephant hills hotel which was nothing short of amazing. Our activities included a helicopter flight, dinner cruise as well as a morning game drive. All the activities were absolutely amazing.
Exceptional!
We worked with Gertrude to schedule and organize everything and she did an excellent job. I asked a lot of questions via e-mail and she answered everyone in a timely helpful manner. Our guide at Victoria Falls was also great. He met us at the airport, provided a thoughtful tour of the Falls and got us to our next guide in Botswana. Our lodgings at River View Lodge were just as described- very comfortable and excellent food. All the staff were so pleasant and helpful. If I had to do it again I would arrange a morning boat ride as well. We only did the sunset boat rides and they were the high point of our entire trip- we saw so many animals and our guide was very knowledgeable. Just a great experience. Our lodgings at Oddball's Enclave was rustic and we loved it. So great to disconnect from the world for a bit. Leo, our guide, was the best - got us out and about, saw fantastic wildlife and got back to camp safely each time. Doc manages the camp so well. This whole trip was planned and organized by Falcon Safaris and we could not have been happier.
Fabulous, well planned trip
Falcon safaris have given my the correct advice with excellent service. The only suggestion will be to work closer with the lodges to confirm bookings as soon as possible. We have booked and pay our deposit a year in advance. We have only receive our final convermation from Chobe Safari lodge a week before departure. I do realize its not within your controle but with limit alternatives and a group of 14 people it becomes an issue to find alternative accomodation if the booking was cancelled.

The Chobe Princess houseboats traverse down the Chobe River , the natural border between Botswana and Namibia. While they are officially located in Nambia; the Chobe Princess houseboats are only accessible from the Botswana side of the Chobe River. Seeing the Chobe National Park from the houseboats is a unique experience. The landscape and wildlife scenes, along with the riverbank, change daily as you tranquilly float through the wilderness.
November – March: Prolific game drives November to March, and sometimes April as well, is known as the wet season in this region. The wildlife moves freely through the Chobe National Park as there is an abundance of water and this makes for exceptional game viewing. Game drives in the Chobe National Park are included in your stay.
June – October: Lots of wildlife on the riverbanks This is when the Chobe River banks come to life. Many animal species gather around and stay close to the main water source, and you can watch them as the Zambezi Queen floats by. Going out on the tender boats is great at any time of the year, and even more special during this time. Don’t forget to book a trip on the specialised photographic boats; you won’t want to miss out on capturing the momentous activity.
September: Fantastic for birding There are, in general, about 450 bird species in the Chobe region. Birding season starts in September, when the first migrants arrive, boosting the bird population by up to 20% compared to the winter months.

Chobe Princesses
About Chobe Princesses
At the eastern end of Namibia's Caprivi Strip, four houseboats known as the Zambezi Queen collection cruise ...
... the Zambezi and Chobe Rivers. The Zambezi Queen is the largest, with 14 cabins, and the most luxurious. Formerly known as the Ichobezi houseboats, and the Pride of the Zambezi houseboat, three smaller boats, each with just four cabins, make up the Chobe Princesses. A few relaxing nights on one of these houseboats is a fantastic way to experience the birds, animals and scenery of this lush corner where Namibia and Botswana meet. Two or three nights on one of the Chobe Princess houseboats offers an intimate and relaxing way to view wildlife, enjoy spectacular birding, try out a bit of fishing, and take a different mode of transport to the more typical game drive safaris. It makes a great addition to a Victoria Falls visit, or a wonderful beginning or end to a Botswana, Zimbabwe or Zambia safari.

When to go to Caprivi Strip
Our month by month guide: What it's like to visit Chobe Princesses in Caprivi Strip
Namibia in January
January is at the heart of Namibia’s rainy season. However, as you’d expect from a country dominated by desert and semi-desert environments, the rains are often (but not always) weak and usually quite localised. Some days will be clear, the strong sun raising temperatures to around 30ºC/86ºF; on others humidity and clouds build, sometimes culminating in spectacular thunderstorms. In extreme cases, these generate flash-floods which race down the beds of ephemeral rivers. Across the country, the greening landscape makes a refreshing change, especially in desert areas. Many birds are in full breeding plumage and migrant species are here in force. In the north, where the rains are more reliable, the abundant water and food allows wildlife to disperse, making it trickier to spot.
- Variable weather: clear, hot & dry, or cloudy & humid with some rain
- Occasional, highly localised thunderstorms
- Many animals with young; birdlife at its most spectacular
- Wildlife dispersed & harder to see, especially in Etosha & the Caprivi
- Very few tourists (apart from the New Year) so rates mostly low
This is not a great time to visit
Weather in January
Namibia in February
February is the wettest month, but as Namibia is dominated by deserts, the rains are often weak and patchy. The variation in weather across Namibia is significant, too; the central highlands and Caprivi can see some heavy rain. More typically, some February days are clear with a hot, strong sun; others are cooler as cloudy skies build and, sometimes, culminate in short, spectacular thunderstorms. Occasionally these generate flash-floods, bringing ephemeral rivers to life and making travel more challenging. Across the country, the landscape feels green and alive; insects and smaller animals are more easily seen, and many birds and animals are raising their young. However, small pools in the bush and thicker vegetation can make it hard to spot the wildlife.
- Variable weather: clear, hot & dry or cloudy & humid with some rain
- Occasional localised thunderstorms meander over the landscape
- The bush feels alive; birdlife is at its most spectacular
- Wildlife in Etosha & Caprivi is dispersed & harder to see
- Few tourists, so rates usually at their lowest
Weather in February
Namibia in March
March usually sees Namibia’s main rains tailing off, although actual precipitation varies hugely across the country and can be unpredictable from day to day. Many days will be clear, with a strong sun driving temperatures up. On others, clouds will build, and the late afternoon may see a short, spectacular thunderstorm. Such deluges reduce in both frequency and volume as the month progresses. Across the country, landscapes are often vivid: a “green and pleasant land”. Many birds and animals are finishing raising their young, so smaller animals and insects are in evidence. In the north, where rains are generally heavier, pools in the bush and thicker vegetation can make it difficult to spot larger animals.
- Afternoon thunderstorms less common as March progresses
- Animals looking sleek and well-fed, after 3–4 months of plenty
- Few tourists visit during March, so rates often low
A good time to visit, with pros & cons
Weather in March
Namibia in April
Typically, April is dominated by dry weather; there’s an ever-decreasing chance of rain. Temperatures are now below their peak and continue to fall. Even so, days remain pleasant and warm, but there might be a slight chill in the air at night. The rains usually leave many parts of the country verdant and green, so animals are in fantastic condition – often with fast-growing young in attendance. With the dust washed out of the atmosphere, photographers make the most of clear air, spectacular landscapes and healthy animals. Stargazers will have clearer night skies as the month progresses. In the game parks of Northern Namibia, water and food remain in plentiful supply, so finding big game can prove trickier than later in the year.
- Becoming drier &, especially at night, also cooler
- Few visitors, except around Easter, so rates remain low
- Wildlife in Etosha & Caprivi remains relatively hard to see
- Migrant birds have started to leave
- Fresh, clean air and often green, verdant landscapes
Weather in April
Namibia in May
By May, Namibia is usually drying out fast as the rains have ended. If they’ve been good, then the land remains green, but wildlife starts to congregate at more permanent water sources. Over much of the country the air quality and clarity can be amazing, making this an ideal month for photography. Typical days are warm, with crisp, clear mornings and clear blue skies. Evenings are usually cool, and temperatures may dip below 10ºC (50ºF) overnight. Many lodges still charge “low season” prices, although with Namibia’s increasing popularity in recent years, some have started to introduce higher “shoulder season” rates. May’s good-value rates, increasingly good wildlife sightings, beautiful landscapes and crystal-clear air combine to make this one of our favourite months in Namibia.
- Lovely weather: dry, warm days & cool nights
- The country is drying out although many landscapes remain green
- Fantastic air clarity – ideal for keen photographers
- Visitor numbers are often still low, mirrored by lodge rates
- Wildlife is starting to congregate more around remaining water
A very good time to visit
Weather in May
Namibia in June
Namibia is dry again. Skies are blue and usually largely cloudless. Days are lovely: warm and dry; nights are cold, sometimes below freezing in the desert. Most swimming pools in Namibia are always outdoors, making them too cold for all except the very dedicated. Take a warm hat and gloves for game drives, where dawn and dusk will feel particularly chilly. In the north, especially Etosha, wildlife viewing is now into its dry-season pattern, focusing around the waterholes – though the park is still not busy. Photographers come for superb air clarity, with minimal dust or smoke in the air. Historically, June rates have been low. However, with Namibia’s increasing popularity many lodges now count it amongst their “high-season” months, and request higher prices.
- Clear, bright days with blue skies; cold nights, mornings & evenings
- Great air quality, especially welcome for photographers
- “Shoulder season” for some lodges: lodge rates moderate
- Wildlife gravitates to waterholes, making game-viewing productive
- Some greenery in the landscape, depending on the last rains
Weather in June
Namibia in July
Reliably warm daytime temperatures (upwards of 20ºC/70ºF) and good wildlife sightings make this a popular month to visit Namibia. Rain would be very unusual indeed and clear skies make for great photographs. Once the sun sets, though, temperatures cool rapidly bringing cold nights that may dip below freezing in the desert. Be prepared: dress in layers and expect early-morning and late-afternoon drives, and anywhere coastal, to be cold. As the land dries and vegetation shrivels, game congregates beside drinking water: Etosha’s waterholes are busy with animals. Across the country, lodges charge “high season” rates; many are fully booked a year or more in advance, especially during European school holidays (from the latter half of July to late August).
- Dry days, warm in the sun, with crisp, cold nights
- Cloudless skies: July is usually superb for stargazing
- The beginning of European school holidays so more families travelling
- Peak season: so high rates and many lodges fully booked far in advance
- A fantastic time of year for wildlife watching, particularly in Etosha
Weather in July
Namibia in August
August is the height of Namibia’s “winter”. Expect cloudless skies and plenty of warm sun in the day, but nights down to freezing in the desert. Dress in layers and bring warm clothes (including hats and gloves) for chilly starts and evenings. Only the hardiest even contemplate using outdoor pools. It’s 3–4 months since any rain, so the land is dust-dry and much vegetation is golden brown. Many landscapes appear sparse and harsh. Wildlife congregates around available water sources, helping to guarantee good animal sightings. Namibia is never really “busy” by the standards of Europe or the USA, but August is the most popular time to visit, especially for families. Book early (over a year in advance) if you want to stay at the best lodges.
- Dry days, warm in the sun; cold mornings, evenings & nights
- Cloudless skies in the day; spectacular stars at night
- Busy by Namibian standards: family rooms in particular demand
Fantastic: the very best time to visit
Weather in August
Namibia in September
September is a month of blue, cloudless skies and fantastic wildlife viewing. Rain is almost unheard of. As the month progresses, the days and nights get warmer. In some areas, daily maximums hit around the low 30s Celsius, although low humidity ensures this feels comfortable. The contrast makes the nights seem very cold. The air is becoming dustier, occasionally augmented by smoke from fires – so becoming hazy for photographic purists. In the national parks, animals congregate around remaining water sources – making September one of the best months for game viewing. Hence it’s one of Namibia’s most popular months for visitors: a “high season” month that is often the time of choice for safari aficionados.
- One of the best months for wildlife viewing
- Warm days & cold nights, with temperatures rising during the month
- Many plants have faded from green to golden brown
- Air can be hazy – with dust & sometimes smoke
- High season rates; many lodges & camps are full 9 months in advance.
Weather in September
Namibia in October
Namibia is usually at its hottest and driest in October. Temperatures build as the month progresses; towards the end, daily highs may exceed 40ºC/100ºF, though with humidity close to zero, even this rarely feels oppressive. In exceptional years, isolated rain showers may fall in late October. More usually, the end of the dry season sees wildlife watching at its best, particularly in Etosha. The place feels like a desert as spectacular herds of thirsty animals gather around the available water. October is popular amongst wildlife enthusiasts and commands peak-season prices, even if dust and smoke may make the air hazy, challenging photographers. Visitor numbers can fade towards the end of the month, allowing a window for last-minute bookings.
- Probably the most spectacular month for wildlife-viewing in Etosha
- Hot and dry: much of the country feels like a desert
- The air can be hazy with dust & smoke
- It’s peak time to visit, so expect high season rates
- Lodges & camps are full, especially early in October
Weather in October
Namibia in November
November is always a bit unpredictable: sometimes dry and hot; sometimes cloudier and cooler. Typically, mornings are hot and cloudless and clouds appear in the afternoon. Humidity builds and eventually breaks, resulting in spectacular thunderstorms that bring convection rainfall in late afternoons. Such storms are typically sparsely distributed and highly local – being completely absent from desert areas, for example. Places that do get good rain will flush green, with a tangible feeling of new life softening the landscapes. Many mammals give birth to their young. Once any rains come, wildlife dissipates in search of food, and game viewing in Etosha becomes harder. Conversely, this is a great time for birdwatchers, with migrant species in breeding plumage.
- A very interesting, variable month, depending on the rains
- With rains come an amazing explosion of both vegetation & new life
- Wildlife viewing better in Damaraland than Etosha if it has rained
- Shoulder season: mid-range rates offer great value
- Away from the Namib, showers are more likely later in the month
Weather in November
Namibia in December
December is the first “proper” month of Namibia’s rainy season, and one of its hottest. Clear mornings give way to building clouds and, with luck, the occasional short, spectacular thunderstorm: refreshing and cleansing. These are often highly localised and generally warmly welcomed: most Namibians love rain! Rains clear the air of dust. Even relatively short showers enable plant life to erupt, carpeting this thirstland in green and providing food for the young animals which abound. Animals disperse widely, which can make game viewing challenging. Many birds are breeding and so sporting their most colourful plumage. Christmas and the New Year fall within local “summer holidays” – so places to stay can be surprisingly busy, especially in and around coastal towns, where temperatures are cooler.
- Hot and humid; sometimes refreshed by cooling showers
- Landscapes flushed green if/where there has been rain
- A tangible life and energy amidst this often green & pleasant land
- Very photogenic: blooming deserts amidst crystal-clear air
- Best time for birdwatchers; larger animals harder to spot

The Chobe Princess
Chobe national park.
The three charming houseboats which make up The Chobe Princess fleet are a popular option for those wanting to focus on the Chobe riverfront safari experience. These boats are smaller and more simple than their bigger, and more luxurious sister, the Zambezi Queen Houseboat, but this also allows them to travel twice the distance up the Chobe River. Tender boats offer superb game viewing opportunities. Scheduled departs allow for 2, 3 or 4 night floating safaris.
The Chobe Princess boats are the epitome of a slow safari, the chance to change gear from the dawn starts and rattle of the 4×4 – this is an entirely water based safari. The Chobe Princess boats sail on scheduled weekly departures every Monday (two-nights or four nights), Wednesday (two-nights) and Friday (three-nights).
Being smaller vessels, The Chobe Princess boats cover an area of approximately 50 km along the stretch of Chobe River as opposed to the larger Zambezi Queen vessel that travels only 25km.
Each boat has 4 or 5 rooms, these air -conditioned and contemporary styled cabins provide comfortable accommodation for the duration of your safari while overhead on the deck, an open – air dining room where delicious meals are served, a bar, lounge and plunge swimming pool are available for guests’ enjoyment.
The preferred time to safari on the Chobe River is between May and November when the bush is drier and the animals are more concentrated on the river. For enthusiastic photographers, the period from December to February makes for enthralling photographic opportunities as the landscape transforms itself following the first seasonal rains.
Leisurely spotting game from the vantage point of the boat deck, guests can appreciate the sweeping views across the river and into the Chobe National Park . Whether preferring an early morning wake- up call or a late morning lie- in, there are a number of activities to be enjoyed daily. Dedicated tender boats take guests out on birding excursions and visits to the local Namibian village – Ijambwe- located on the floodplains of the East Caprivi, giving guests the opportunity to meet village elders and locals and gain a greater understanding of the day to day lives and traditions of this century old village. The sale of handmade crafts assists members of the community to make a living.
Nature lovers can seize the opportunity of a short, guided walk through the bush with the final destination being a 2000-year-old baobab tree where one can discover more about the medicinal and spiritual value of Impalila Island’s flora.
The boating safaris offer the best game viewing, huge herds of Chobe elephant often swim across the water. Other animals often seen include buffalo, lion, crocodile, lechwe, puku, giraffe, zebra, sable, kudu and the occasional predator as they converge at the river bank in the late afternoon to drink.
Keen fisherman can indulge in several hours of catch-and-release fishing of sizeable tiger fish and bream throughout the year. Experienced guides provide all the tackle and bait needed as you explore the Chobe and Zambezi rivers, manoeuvre through the winding Kasai Channel and visit the exciting Chobe and Mambova rapids.
Three-hour photographic safaris, timed so as to take advantage of the perfect golden light of early morning or later afternoon that Africa is famed for, can be arranged for a group of six people at a time on The Chobe Princess. Especially designed swivel chairs within the photographic boat allow for greater stability and 360-degree views for a wider range of subject matter. Each seat is equipped with a mounting for resting SLR cameras of all types Tea and coffee will be offered in the morning during the winter months and sundowners – a traditional highlight of any African Safari – are enjoyed at dusk during the hotter months of the year. Light snacks are also served during your excursion, making your wildlife photographic excursion an experience to remember.
The Zambezi Queen is actually based on the Namibian side of the Chobe river, so a visit to the Botswana and Namibian immigration offices on the river is necessary before boarding the boat. A simple process.
