This lively, family-friendly resort offers a variety of accommodations that include connecting suites, spacious villas, and swim-up suites with private pools. "We visited this colorful, all-inclusive property at Nickelodeon Hotel, Punta Cana for a weeklong family vacation in spring 2018. Staying in a Swim-Up Suite, mom and dad and two kids were comfortable with a king-sized bed and pull-out queen, with a shared swimming pool right off our deck," Aimee White Beazley , a Travel + Leisure contributor, said.

For an even more special experience, stay in The Pineapple , an homage to the famous undersea dwelling from SpongeBob SquarePants . The lodging includes two bedrooms, three bathrooms, and an infinity pool. According to Beazley, it's "Instagram-worthy."

The Aqua Nick Water Park, Character Central, and Club Nick will entertain the kids, and adults can relax in the spa. "Our days were spent boogie boarding in Punta Cana’s famous waves, sipping on Slime Smoothies delivered to our Bali Beach Bed by a private butler, and, of course, getting “slimed” at Aqua Nick," said Beazley.

Restaurants feature Italian cuisine, Asian fusion, poolside casual dining, and more. "The hotel’s nine restaurants included family favorite, BRGRS, and parents loved a night out at Verdello Sicilian Kitchen, while kids were safely entertained at Club Nick, a kids-only club," Beazley told T+L.

"Cap Cana is a stunning stretch of sand sandwiched between the azure seas of the Caribbean and the verdant interior of the eastern Dominican Republic," Brad Japhe , a T+L contributor, said. "The Hyatt Ziva affords the perfect contemporary perch from which to absorb it all. I was super impressed from the moment I entered the property's expansive lobby, with its lush greenery hanging overhead and bamboo-lined ceilings. My suite was just as dazzling; sleekly appointed with local cultural accents, unobstructed in its seaside panorama."

Musicians and dancers provide nightly entertainment in the resort's outdoor amphitheater. For young visitors, there's a kids' club and supervised games, and guests ages 13-17 can experience Formula 1 racing at the teen club. It offers everything you'd expect from a great all-inclusive family-friendly resort in the Caribbean .

As for Japhe, he noted: "I enjoyed more of the same from the pools and hot tubs, seated at the edge of the playa. There are several dining options on the property, including the beachside Chinola. I found the best dishes at El Mercado, where a daily buffet focuses on Caribbean flavors."

Royalton Splash Punta Cana

This Autograph Collection all-inclusive resort and casino is home to one of the Caribbean's largest water parks as well as a stretch of white-sand beach. "There's much to explore across the grounds, including an eco-park populated by local flora and fauna," said Japhe. "I encountered several peacocks while strolling the grounds. There is a good degree of walking to be expected here — for me, that was more of a feature rather than a flaw."

More About Dominican Republic, Punta Cana

Located at the easternmost region of the Dominican Republic, Punta Cana is a resort town known for its long stretch – 12 miles to be exact – of white-sand beaches, turquoise waters and pristine vegetation. Although it might be one of the lesser-known golfing destinations, don’t let that fool you, it is home to some of the most impressive championship golf courses around. To the north is Bávaro – the most developed section of Punta Cana, offering an additional 30 miles of white-sand beaches, which rank it among the longest and most continuous beaches in the Caribbean. Together, Punta Cana and Bávaro make up what is known as the Coconut Coast – where the wide beaches are lined with resorts, palm trees and coral reefs that make the water calm. To the south is La Romana, famous for its sugar cane plantation, and of course the dreamy white-sand beaches. It is an interesting place to snorkel among tropical marine life and shipwrecks just off the coast of Catalina Island.

Before You Go

  • To make it easier to replace your passport if it’s lost or stolen, in addition to your passport, take a photocopy of your passport information page (keeping it separate from your actual passport).
  • Carry only a limited amount of cash, just enough for gratuities and incidental purchases. Major credit cards are widely accepted and can be replaced if lost or stolen.
  • Always lock your hotel room door (including patio and balcony door on any level of the building) and use the peephole before opening the door.
  • Store your valuables (such as cash, credit cards and airline tickets) in the hotel’s in-room safe or front desk safety deposit box.
  • If you must carry valuables on your person, do so in a pouch or money belt concealed under your clothing. Purses and backpacks can be easy targets for thieves.
  • For complete and current safety and security information, including travelers' tips, public announcements, travel advisories and more, please visit the website of the U.S. Department of State at www.travel.state.gov.

Sargassum/Seaweed Advisory

Sargassum is a free-floating seaweed that is especially prolific in the Caribbean Sea and Gulf of Mexico. While beneficial to ocean life, these large free-floating seaweed mats often wash up on beaches. The amount of seaweed on the beaches fluctuates based on the time of year and ocean currents. While resorts do their best to maintain the beaches for their guests, you may experience some inconvenience during your stay.

Top Experiences

Bávaro Beach : Stretching 30 miles, it is the most famous beach in Punta Cana and arguably one of the top beaches in the world with some sections as wide as 250 feet.

Golfing : There are 26 golf courses in the Dominican Republic, many of which reside within Punta Cana and the surrounding area, and come from the most acclaimed golf course architects, including Pete Dye, Jack Nicklaus and Tom Fazio just to name a few.

Nightlife : Enjoy the sights, tastes and sounds, and dance all night to multiple genres of music throughout the city at various bars, casinos, disco-clubs and restaurants.

Zip Line : Taking you high above the jungle and measuring 2,500 feet in length, Punta Cana offers the longest zip line in the Dominican Republic.

16 Best Things to Do in Punta Cana, Dominican Republic

punta cana trips for two

Punta Cana Beaches Punta Cana Beaches free

No trip to Punta Cana would be complete without some time spent on its gorgeous beaches. Playa Bávaro (Bavaro Beach) is one of the most popular shorelines in Punta Cana, with its powdery sands, swaying palm trees, blue waters and bevy of amenities, including water sports rentals, dining options and nearby accommodations. Visitors will find this beautiful (but busy) beach stretching for 12 miles between Macao and Cabeza de Toro, but keep in mind that there are just four public access points (at Corales, El Cortecito, Jellyfish and Bibijagua).

Bavaro Beach has several subsections that all have their own name. However, they are all connected and you can explore them walking consecutively. El Cortecito and Corales are two of these stretches and are very convenient as they abut the Bávaro-Punta Cana downtown district of restaurants, grocery stores, gift shops and more. Arena Gorda is the next beach, northwest of El Cortecito, and its wide sands and shallow waters make it a favored spot among families with young kids in tow. Others say it's a wonderful place for a long walk. Keep in mind that much of the beach is backed by large resorts, hence the only public access point to Arena Gorda is through El Cortecito.

Saona Island Saona Island

U.S. News Insider Tip: If you'd like to reach the island on your own, there is a public ferry once a day from Bayahibe to Mano Juan, the only village on the otherwise uninhabited island with basic accommodation options. – Christian Jannasch

Saona Island makes for a picture-perfect day trip from Punta Cana. Turquoise water, white sand beaches and natural beauty draw visitors to this island located off the Dominican Republic's southern coast. It is the Dominican Republic's main tourist attraction, but this doesn't impact the incredible paradisiacal setting you will find here. Previous visitors praised the island's pristine beaches and appreciated their cleanliness.

Punta Cana Boat Tours Punta Cana Boat Tours

One of the best ways to view Punta Cana is to get off the resort and take a boat tour. Various operators offer different experiences, from private catamarans to group snorkeling trips. One of the most well-reviewed tour operators is Hispaniola Aquatic Adventures , which has a fleet of catamarans for private and semiprivate tours that take visitors to snorkeling reefs, a deserted beach and lagoons along the Bavaro coast. Along with transportation to and from area hotels, Hispaniola Aquatic Adventures also offers tourgoers drinks and lunch. The company's four-hour tour starts at $99 per person for a shared small group tour; private tours for groups of up to seven people start at $599 (not including per person meal costs).

Similar to Hispaniola, Happy Fish Catamarans also offers private or shared small group tours, which start at $94 per person for a four-hour tour that includes drinks, snacks and snorkeling. For dive trips, recent travelers suggest booking a tour with Ultra Marine Divers , which includes pickup and drop-off service from hotels for scuba diving excursions. Recent visitors praised the scuba dive instructors, saying they were both knowledgeable and friendly.

Indigenous Eyes Ecological Park (Reserva Ecológica Ojos Indígenas) Indigenous Eyes Ecological Park (Reserva Ecológica Ojos Indígenas)

This 1,500-acre nature reserve provides plenty in the way of outdoor adventures and activities. Originally inhabited by the Taino Indians, the private nature reserve is now operated by Grupo Puntacana Foundation, an organization specializing in improving sustainability efforts in the Dominican Republic. The park is accessible to visitors (for a fee), who want to swim in its turquoise lagoons, traverse its meandering trails and admire its colorful wildlife.

Nature lovers will be in awe of the more than 500 plant species within this subtropical environment. There is also an array of flat walking trails surrounded by lush vegetation, which can be explored on a guided tour. Most trails are manageable for people of all ages and fitness levels, according to past travelers. Indigenous Eyes Ecological Park is also home to 12 lagoons, of which only a few are open for swimming.

Scape Park at Cap Cana (Hoyo Azul) Scape Park at Cap Cana (Hoyo Azul)

U.S. News Insider Tip: The Blue Lagoon is usually a bit crowded. To enjoy the best conditions and snap the most picturesque photos, head to the Blue Lagoon either right after the park opens, during lunchtime or just before the gates close. – Christian Jannasch

Scape Park Punta Cana is a nature theme park in Cap Cana that features many water activities and one of Punta Cana's main attractions: Hoyo Azul, also called the Blue Lagoon. Hoyo Azul is a cenote (a type of natural swimming hole usually found in limestone caves) located at the foot of a cliff. The cenote can only be accessed with a full-day ticket for Scape Park and is reachable after a short hike. From the center of the park, it is a mostly flat, 15- to 20-minute walk through tropical vegetation until you reach Hoyo Azul with its incredible turquoise color and crystal-clear water.

Off-Roading Vehicle Tours Off-Roading Vehicle Tours

If you're looking to add a bit of adventure to your Dominican vacation, embark on an all-terrain vehicle tour. You and your companions will cruise around the Dominican Republic's countryside while a tour guide narrates the journey, pointing out important sites. Along your island tour, you'll stop to admire scenic overlooks, try coffee, chocolate and rum from local vendors, and explore natural wonders like Macao Beach and a freshwater cenote.

Many companies offer these off-roading excursions, so deciding which tour to book comes down to personal preference. Previous visitors lauded Just Safari - Tours for its friendly guides, and they appreciated the many stops and photo opportunities along the route. Other travelers liked Flintstones Buggy Adventure because the tours were geared more toward families and children. On the other hand, a 4x4 Dominican Adventure tour would be a better choice for adrenaline junkies looking to fly through the jungle and sample local delicacies, like coffee and rum.

Punta Espada Golf Course Punta Espada Golf Course

The green fees to play at Punta Espada are hefty, but hear us out before you write it off: This par-72 course is a Jack Nicklaus signature course and the site of top tournaments like the PGA Champions Tour. It's one of the most gorgeous courses in Punta Cana, with winding pathways and a top-notch view. In fact, the sprawling course is most often described by visitors as "golf heaven" – likely because of its mix of vibrant colors (from sage greens to the aquamarine surf) and various amenities.

Your day rate includes the use of a cart, caddie and range balls, among other amenities. There's also a restaurant with an ocean-view patio on-site. As you drive the course, keep an eye out for the million-dollar mansions and the private beach club. Past visitors called the course "fantastic," "spectacular" and a "bucket-list experience," though they do warn of extremely high prices.

Macao Beach Macao Beach free

U.S. News Insider Tip: There is a small hidden beach called Playa Escondida just northeast of Macao Beach. It's connected to the northeastern end of Macao Beach via a 10-minute hiking path that makes for a great little adventure. – Christian Jannasch

When you ask locals about their favorite beach in Punta Cana, they will most likely tell you it's Macao Beach. This beach, located between the hotel zones of Bávaro Beach and Uvero Alto, is incredibly beautiful, and features not only a nearly half-moon-shaped bay, but also many opportunities to experience the local (beach) life, which sets it apart from the other beaches in Punta Cana that are dominated by resorts. So far, there is only one all-inclusive resort at Macao Beach, making this shoreline, together with its neighboring Macao village, a local and authentic experience. If you don't consider yourself a strong swimmer, it's best to stick to the eastern part of the beach, where waves and currents are significantly milder. This beach is also home to Macao Surf Camp, where visitors can learn to surf from experts.

Coco Bongo Punta Cana Coco Bongo Punta Cana

Coco Bongo is Punta Cana's biggest and most famous nightlife venue. It offers a unique mix of music, dance performances, variety shows and disco, and is frequented by visitors and locals alike (though tourists are certainly the majority). It's a safe place to enjoy a night out from your resort, as long as you don't have a problem with crowded indoor venues. Shows, which are interactive and showcase special effects, are inspired by popular music and movies, such as the Beatles, "Mad Max" and "Moulin Rouge."

Drinks are included with your ticket.

Juanillo Beach Juanillo Beach

Juanillo Beach is considered one of the most gorgeous beaches in Punta Cana. The scenery here is simply breathtaking, thanks to the turquoise ocean, the calm and shallow waters, the towering palm trees, and some of the whitest sands Punta Cana has to offer. But this paradisiacal setting doesn't come without a price. Even though the beach is technically open to the public and free to visit, it's located within Cap Cana, a gated luxury community about 10 miles south of Bavaro Beach. Unless you're staying at one of the resorts within Cap Cana (like the Hy att Ziva Cap Cana or Sanctuary Cap Cana ), you'll need to pay between $20 and $25 per person (depending on the day) to enter. The payment acts as a food and beverage voucher that you can use at the Juanillo Grill Beach Club. Upon entering Cap Cana, you'll also have to leave your ID or passport with the security office; you'll get it back after you leave the community.

Whether Juanillo Beach is worth the money or not depends on your preferences. Some travelers say the food and drinks at Juanillo Grill Beach Club are overpriced and describe the service as slow. For others, this is the most beautiful and relaxing place you can find in the Dominican Republic – especially as there are no vendors roaming around disrupting the peaceful atmosphere. Something everyone agrees on is that the beach is stunning, especially during the winter months. If you're visiting outside of the winter months, you may encounter piles of sargassum, a type of seaweed that accumulates on the shore and can emit a smelly odor as it decomposes. Seaweed season in Punta Cana generally runs from April to September, so keep that in mind when planning your visit.

Montaña Redonda Montaña Redonda

If you're on the hunt for one-of-a-kind things to do in Punta Cana, Montaña Redonda shouldn't be missed. This unique mountain features a 360-degree panoramic view of the amazing untouched coastline north of Punta Cana, as well as the incredibly lush hills of the Anamuya Mountains and the Cordillera Oriental. You can also see Playa Limón, Playa Esmeralda and Laguna Limon. What sets it apart from other viewpoints is that Montaña Redonda features several unique photo opportunities, among them giant swings on the edge of the mountain, hammocks and old brooms, which create the optical illusion that you're "flying" on the mountain.

Travelers love the clear views as well as the zip line at the top. Though the zip line is rather short, it offers great views, according to reviewers. There is no fixed entrance fee; some people pay local prices, some pay tourist prices, which is why you should negotiate the cost upon arriving. According to recent visitors, it costs 200 Dominican pesos (around $3.50) if you walk up the hill or $10 if you take a truck up and down.

Los Haitises National Park Los Haitises National Park

Thanks to its rich biodiversity, Los Haitises is one of the most important national parks in the Dominican Republic. Nearly 100 miles away from the hustle and bustle of Punta Cana's resort area, the park sprawls across an area of more than 600 square miles and is home to more than 50 species of mangrove trees, 20 endemic birds (such as the Ridgway's hawk, the Hispaniolan piculet, the Hispaniolan woodpecker and the Hispaniolan emerald) and a number of other animals and plants native to this area, such as pelicans, frigate birds, sawfish, sea turtles and manatees. Aside from the wildlife, the park also features scattered bays and towering limestone islands that resemble the famous Halong Bay in Vietnam. When exploring Los Haitises, you will most likely also visit one of the several caves with old rock paintings, particularly petroglyphs and pictographs, from the native inhabitants of the Dominican Republic, the Tainos, who lived here many centuries ago. Visitors to Los Haitises National Park love the excellent views and the pristine nature. The national park is mostly untouched by tourism and offers a very intimate nature experience, according to recent visitors. The best way to explore the national park is by boat, as the terrain is mostly inaccessible except for two hiking trails from Paraíso Caño Hondo and Altos de Caño Hondo, which are the only accommodation options within the park boundaries. Los Haitises National Park is located south of the Bay of Samaná, approximately 85 miles northwest of Punta Cana. Guided full-day tours are offered from Punta Cana and usually start at around $165 per person. Alternatively, you can rent a car and explore the national park with local guides at your own pace. In this case, it is recommended to stay a night at the unique and beautiful, yet rustic, eco-lodges of the national park: Paraiso Caño Hondo or Altos de Caño Hondo.

Go on a whale watching tour Go on a whale watching tour

The Dominican Republic, particularly Samaná Bay, is considered one of the best places to observe whales in the Caribbean. Part of the Marine Mammal Sanctuary of the Dominican Republic, the bay welcomes thousands of humpback whales every winter. The sanctuary is only open to whale watching boats, ensuring a peaceful environment for the animals to birth their calves. What's more, there are strict protocols in place to protect the animals, and tour operators that do not respect them lose their licenses pretty quickly.

Whale watching tours are usually available from mid-January to the end of March, when humpback whales come to Samaná Bay for the breeding season. Most tours that originate in Punta Cana begin with a 1.5-hour bus ride to the area of Miches, where tourgoers board a boat bound for Samaná Bay. Chances of sightings are extremely high; it is very uncommon to have a tour without any whales, according to operators.

Altos de Chavón Altos de Chavón

Most travelers don't expect to see a replica of a 16th-century Italian village during their trip to the Dominican Republic, but that's what makes Altos de Chavón all the more surprising and unique. The meticulously designed attraction sits on the southern coast of the island, and it first opened to the public in 1982. Art galleries, boutique stores and restaurants line the village's picturesque cobblestone streets. There is even a 5,000-seat amphitheater in the village center that features views of the Chavón River and the Caribbean Sea. The amphitheater has played host to numerous notable musicians and other performers, including Frank Sinatra, Elton John and Sting. The Archaeological Regional Museum is also a top attraction within the village, where visitors can learn about the island's Indigenous people and admire more than 3,000 artifacts. Not to mention, the St. Stanislaus Church offers breathtaking views, making it a popular wedding venue.

Most travelers visit Altos de Chavon for the stunning views and to see a piece of Italy in the middle of the Caribbean. Travelers love the quiet atmosphere, especially as there are no hawkers and vendors around. However, not everyone feels that it is worth the high entrance fee.

Basilica Catedral Nuestra Señora de la Altagracia Basilica Catedral Nuestra Señora de la Altagracia free

Travelers are sure to be awed by this unique church. It boasts a modern facade and a massive arch that towers nearly 230 feet above the ground. While you could spend your whole visit admiring the exterior, past travelers say it's worth venturing inside as well. Inside, visitors will find striking tapered ceilings and a painting of the Virgin Mary at the altar dating back to the 16th century. One of the country's most important religious sites, the basilica has played host to prominent visitors, including Pope John Paul II. Each January, many Dominicans make a pilgrimage to the site to pay respects to the Virgin Mary, the country's patron saint.

The basilica is free to enter, though donations are encouraged. If you visit the church as part of a Punta Cana tour group, your entrance donation will likely be covered. Basilica Catedral Nuestra Señora de la Altagracia is located about 30 miles west of Punta Cana, so you'll need to take a taxi or rent a car if you're planning a visit. Public transport is also available from most resorts, though you'll need to prepare for an uncomfortable, yet authentic bus ride in a local guagua . Hours vary by day, so be sure to consult the church website when planning your visit. Sunday is the busiest day when locals go to church. You can also learn more about the history of this church on the Dominican Republic's tourism website .

Salto de la Jalda Salto de la Jalda

If you're looking for the ultimate off-the-beaten-track experience, Salto de la Jalda might be the perfect fit. It's hard to believe the highest waterfall in the Dominican Republic hardly receives any visitors, even though it's only about a two-hour drive northwest of Punta Cana's crowded tourist zone. Cascading approximately 400 feet, the Salto de la Jalda waterfall is an impressive natural attraction that is worth exploring if you're up for the adventure. The waterfall is only accessible via a 9-mile round-trip hike, but considering the path is more or less flat along a riverbed and through mostly shaded forests and cocoa plantations, it's suitable for everyone in reasonably decent physical shape. Once you reach the waterfall, you'll likely have it all to yourself without any other visitors. What's more, a dip into the natural waterfall pool is a rewarding refreshment.

Most recent visitors say that hiring a guide or booking a tour is very helpful for this hike, as the trail is not marked. Many visitors opt to rent horses from the local villagers to make it even easier to reach Salto de la Jalda. It's doable to hike on your own, but only if you're experienced in walking in tropical terrain, have a GPS with you, a trail map saved on your phone and an emergency kit in your backpack.

In case you’d prefer to explore Punta Cana on your own, it is best to book a car rental in Punta Cana as most of the attractions are rather difficult to reach with public transport (and taxis are super expensive). If you have ever dreamt of visiting a beach where you have 2 miles of beach all on your own, Playa Esmeralda is your Punta Cana day trip to choose. Even it is only a bit more than an hour ago from the multi-billion-dollar tourism industry of Punta Cana, nobody is venturing out to visit this beach. And it’s not only the secludedness that makes Playa Esmeralda unique, it is also the picture-perfect setting with shallow water, swaying coconut palm trees and fine sand.

Unfortunately, a first all-inclusive resort ( Club Med Miches *) has been built in 2019/2020 and opened in 2021, hence Playa Esmeralda is not 100% pristine anymore. However, it is a rather small resort and it is located at the far western end of the beach, hence the main beach and the eastern end are just like pure paradise. The advantage of it: the road to Esmeralda Beach is now much better than before and can be accessed by any vehicle.

Distance from Bavaro/Punta Cana: 50 miles and 1:15h driving How to get to Playa Esmeralda: Take your Punta Cana rental car and head northwest towards Miches. In the municipality of La Mina, take a right turn when you see a sign mentioning Costa Esmeralda. Further Information: – the best beaches in Punta Cana – the best of Dominican Republic’s beaches

3) Salto de la Jalda

The Northwest of Punta Cana, where you can find Montaña Redonda and Playa Esmeralda, hosts many treasures. Another attraction in this area is Salto de la Jalda, which is the highest waterfall in the Caribbean .

The author Chris in the Dominican Republic

Same as Playa Esmeralda, Salto de la Jalda can often be found without any other tourists, it is totally off-the-beaten-track. To reach the highest of Punta Canas’ waterfalls , it requires a 3-hour hour hike (one-way) besides a 2-hour drive to the trailhead. Even this sounds a lot, it is still a wonderful day trip from Punta Cana if you are an adventurous traveler with some hiking experience. The reward of this long-trip will be a refreshing dip into the natural swimming pool, an impressive view on the highest waterfall of the Dominican Republic (and the Caribbean) as well as an unparalleled untouched scenery. This Punta Cana day excursion is definitely not for the faint-hearted.

Distance from Bavaro/Punta Cana: 65 miles and 2 hours driving How to get to Salto de la Jalda:  Option A – for the hiking trip, take your rental car ( check prices for rental cars from/to Punta Cana here *) or a taxi from Punta Cana northwest-ward on the well-maintained road to Miches. Continue in the direction of Sabana de la Mar until the town of Magua, where you turn left into the Magua River Valley. Continue until the trailhead or until the road gets too bad to start the hike. For the trailhead and GPS trail of the hike,  check out my full article of Salto de la Jalda . Don’t head off with the proper experience of long hikes and open terrain! A guide is highly recommendable! Option B – book a fully-guided excursion from Punta Cana to Salto de la Jalda * Option C – book a helicopter excursion to Salto de la Jalda * Further information:   Salto de la Jalda, the highest waterfall in the Caribbean

4) Cascada Blanca

If Salto de la Jalda sounds too complicated for you, don’t worry, there are plenty of other waterfalls you can reach from Punta Cana . One of them possible as a day trip from Punta Cana is Cascada Blanca, another impressive waterfall hidden in the lush vegetation of the Dominican Republic, but with much easier access if you go with a guide.

Depending on your shape, the trail has a medium difficulty and can be completed in less than one hour per way. You can refresh yourself in two natural swimming pools as there is a second waterfall on the way. Once you are back in the quiet mountain village of Pedro Sanchez, you can head for a delicious local homecooked lunch.

Alternatively, you can download a GPS track from Alltrails if you want to do this day trip from Punta Cana, even though it is not recommended to go on your own if you don’t have experience walking through the jungle.

Distance from Bavaro/Punta Cana: 65 miles and a bit less than 2 hours driving How to get to Cascada Blanca:  Take your car rental ( check prices for rental cars from/to Punta Cana here *) or a taxi from Punta Cana northwest-ward on the well-maintained road to Miches. Continue left in the direction of El Seibo until you reach Pedro Sanchez. Here you should meet your pre-arranged guide. Further information: All waterfalls in Punta Cana reachable in under 3 hours

5) Casa de Campo and Altos de Chavón

You see that the Northwest of Punta Cana has plenty of natural attractions to offer when it comes to Punta Cana trips. If you prefer it a bit more relaxed with less action, you should head to the area west and southwest of Punta Cana, where you can find easier Punta Cana day trips which are also very suitable for families (you can find all recommended family activities in Punta Cana here ), small children and the elderly.

The most famous thing-to-do in this area of the Dominican Republic is Casa de Campo, which not only features hundreds of luxury villas and a high-end resort but is also home to Altos de Chavón, a re-creation of a Mediterranean style European village with views on the scenic Chavón River, which marks a perfect day trip from Punta Cana. Here you can stroll along the cobblestone alleyways, take stunning photos and enjoy a café or lunch in a relaxed atmosphere. Once you have paid the entrance fee (25 USD) for Casa de Campo which is mandatory to visit Altos de Chavón, you can also check out the marina and the beach of Casa de Campo. Keep your eyes open when you tour around, you might be able to see a few celebrities, as Casa de Campo is a popular holiday destination for many VIPs such as Robert Redford, Mikhail Gorbachev, Bill Clinton, George Bush, Robert Stack, Vin Diesel and Jennifer Lopez.

Distance from Bavaro/Punta Cana: 55 miles and 1-hour driving How to get to Casa de Campo:   Option A – Take a very easy drive along the highway leading from Punta Cana towards La Romana and follow the signs to Casa de Campo Option B – Book your excursion to Altos de Chavon from Punta Cana here *

Altos de Chavon in Casa de Campo, Dominican Republic

6) Cueva de las Maravillas

Once you have started your Punta Cana trip to Casa de Campo, you can also head the additional 20 minutes west and visit “La Cueva de las Maravillas”, the Cave of the Wonders. The main attractions of this large and illuminated cave system are its paintings and engravings on the walls, which are over 500 years old and date back to the Taínos, the native inhabitants of the Dominican Republic. As the caves are directly on the highway and the walk is guided and well-marked, this is an easy visit suitable for everyone. The entrance fee is around 400 DOP (approx. 7 USD) and you can also see a small iguana zoo.

Distance from Bavaro/Punta Cana: 70 miles and 1:15h driving How to get to La Cueva de las Maravillas: Take the highway from Punta Cana to Santo Domingo , the caves are approximately half-way between both destinations

The Cave of Wonders, Cueva de las Maravillas, nearby La Romana

7) Barcelo Rum Factory

Close to the town of San Pedro de Macorís, which is easily accessible for a day trip from Punta Cana, you can find one of the biggest rum distilleries in the Dominican Republic : Barceló. The visitor center is located amidst endless sugar cane plantations, where a lot can be learned about the distilling process, the history and the different brands of Barceló. You can choose between the Añejo Tour (15 USD) and the Imperial Tour (25 USD), which mainly differs by the kind of rums you can select for the rum tasting .

Distance from Bavaro/Punta Cana: 85 miles and 1:45h driving How to get to the Barcelo Rum Factory: Follow the highway from Punta Cana until San Pedro de Macorís. When reaching the junction to Carreterra Mella, leave the highway and head towards Quisqueya. Further information: rum tours in Punta Cana and the Dominican Republic

8) Boca de Yuma

One of the closest day trips from Punta Cana is Boca de Yuma. It is that close that it’s also possible as a half-day trip from Bavaro & Co. Boca de Yuma is a little and very quiet fishing village, which is famous for its various local restaurants atop a cliff with a marvelous view on the ocean and the surrounding coast. It is the best and most authentic place to eat fresh fish in the entire eastern part of the Dominican Republic, plates are usually around 10-12 USD. International tourism is almost non-existent here, but the restaurants feature a welcoming and rural charm.

If you want to have a walk before or after your meal of fish, you can head towards the little park of the village with views of the river Yuma, visit a natural swimming pool separated from the ocean just by some rocks (“El Zumbador”) or explore the underground lagoon around a 1 mile away from Yuma for a refreshing swim. To visit the lagoon, ask the locals to show you the way and tip them after the tour. Alternatively, if you want to discover this Punta Cana day trip as a guided tour, you can book a Boca de Yuma day excursion from Punta Cana here *.

Distance from Bavaro/Punta Cana: 50 miles and 1h driving How to get to the Boca de Yuma: Drive along the Punta Cana highway until the Higuey turn-off and follow the road south until you reach Boca de Yuma

Boca de Yuma, a typical fishing village in the Dominican Republic

Another half-day trip from Punta Cana which can be extended to a full-day Punta Cana trip as well is Higuey, the capital of the province La Altagracia – the same province Punta Cana is part of. Higuey is a bustling city with the typical attributes of every major Dominican town: loud, chaotic and cheap. If you are looking for something specific, you can get it here for a discounted price, but have to deal with congested streets, omnipresent vendors and different influences on all sensory organs. As a reward, you can visit an authentic Dominican market, very cheap local restaurants or the famous Basílica Catedral Nuestra Señora de la Altagracia, one of the most important religious buildings in the entire Dominican Republic and thanks to its gigantic arch also an impressive landmark.

Higuey is also one of the best Punta Cana day trips if you would like to try the public transport in Punta Cana , as nearly all Punta Cana resorts and accommodation in Bavaro, Cabeza de Toro, Arena Gorda, Macao and Uvero Alto are connected with direct services to Higuey. You can read here on how the public transport system in Punta Cana is working . Because of the congested streets in Higuey, I would recommend a day trip from Punta Cana to Higuey by public transport rather than with a rental car.

If you feel that this is too adventurous, you can also book a guided excursion to Higuey *.

Distance from Bavaro/Punta Cana: 25 miles and less than 1-hour driving How to get to Higuey :  Option A – by car ( check prices for rental cars in Punta Cana here *), just follow the signs or the map to Higuey. Depending on where your resort is, you can reach Higuey either via the highway or via Otrabanda. Option B – head to Higuey by public transport. Check out this article to see how to get to Higuey . Option C – book a guided half-day excursion to Higuey *

10) Santo Domingo

Santo Domingo is a very popular Punta Cana day trip, even in my opinion it’s a bit too far, hence I prefer it as a 2-day road-trip (check out unique places to stay in Santo Domingo here ) in combination with some other points of interest mentioned in this article .

However, if you decide to go to Santo Domingo for a day trip from Punta Cana, you will see one of the most historic sites of the entire Caribbean – and one of the most beautiful as well. The Colonial Zone of Santo Domingo is the heart of the city, the historic center and at the same time also protected as a UNESCO world cultural heritage. Strolling through the ancient streets feels like being in an open-air museum, as you can see colonial buildings, colorful facades and centuries-old landmarks such as the oldest church of the Americas, the house of Columbus’ son or the fortresses back from the 16th century. You can also enjoy the several cafés, historic patios and creative art shops, which all make up for an exciting and memorable day.

Same as for Higuey, Santo Domingo also marks a perfect option if you are looking for a Punta Cana trip by public transport . You can check out all the connections between Punta Cana and Santo Domingo here .

Distance from Bavaro/Punta Cana: 125 miles and 2.5 hours driving How to get to Santo Domingo: Option A – book your full-day excursion from Punta Cana to Santo Domingo here * Option B – take the first bus in the morning from Bavaro to Santo Domingo (7 am, be at the bus station at least 30 minutes before). In the afternoon, take the last bus from Santo Domingo back to Punta Cana (4 pm, be at the bus station at least 30 minutes before). See more information about the busses running between Punta Cana and Santo Domingo in this section . Option C (not recommended due to the traffic in Santo Domingo) – with your rental car , head along the main highway from Santo Domingo to Punta Cana and look for the car parks right in the Colonial Zone at Calle José Reyes or Calle Arzobispo Meriño. 11) Los Haitises National Park

Los Haitises National Park is another famous attraction and it is no less impressive than Santo Domingo. While it is also quite far and I have described some options for a 2-day itinerary here in this article , it is a perfect opportunity to see some of the Dominican Republic’s most beautiful nature and wildlife. Usually, you can explore the park by boat and see frigate birds, mangroves and caves with ancient rock paintings. If you decide for a customized version to Los Haitises on ypur Punta Cana trip, you can also visit the impressive waterfall eco-lodge in the national park and even stay there for a night , which might be one of the most exciting overnight accommodations you have ever had. Read more about it in my separate article of Los Haitises National Park .

Distance from Bavaro/Punta Cana: 80 miles and 2.5 hours driving How to get to Los Haitises National Park: Option A – book your full-day excursion from Punta Cana to Los Haitises National Park here * Option B – take your Punta Cana car hire and head towards Sabana de la Mar, a newly built road from Punta Cana. Continue a dirt road for around half an hour until you reach the little national park accommodation Paraíso Caño Hondo *. You can book your national park tour by boat there. 12) Isla Saona

The last two entries in my post about the most recommendable day trips from Punta Cana are two of the most beautiful islands you can find in the Dominican Republic. The first one is Isla Saona , one of the most visited islands in the entire Caribbean, but also one of the most beautiful ones. Even thousands of tourists are coming here every day, you have to visit Isla Saona on your own to see the beauty of the island . Picture-perfect beaches, swaying palm trees, catamarans anchoring in ultra-turquoise water and a Caribbean charm which is hard to resist are some of the key points of a Punta Cana day trip to Saona Island. Furthermore, the tour by boat lives up its dream of cruising with a catamaran through the open ocean while sipping on a drink and admire the surrounding scenery. Isla Saona is a must-see during your vacation and one of the best day trips in Punta Cana, even it can only be visited as a group tour (or on a private Saona excursion ).

Distance from Bavaro/Punta Cana: 50 miles and 1:15h driving How to get to Isla Saona: the easiest is to simply book a full-day group excursion from/to Punta Cana * (or a private tour ( check prices here *) if that fits your budget) Further information: – Excursion to Isla Saona – everything you need to know for your hassle-free Isla Saona tour – the best beaches in the Dominican Republic (incl. map)

The one and only Isla Saona, the most popular excursion in Punta Cana and the Dominican Republic

13) Isla Catalina

The second option for an island day trip from Punta Cana is Isla Catalina , which is the little neighbor of Isla Saona. It is much less frequented than Isla Saona and offers a better catamaran experience (because both ways are by catamaran and not just one way as for Isla Saona ) and better snorkeling conditions. Even though the scenery might not be as spectacular as for Isla Saona, you still can have a perfect day when heading towards Isla Catalina. Fun on the catamaran, relaxing on the beach, some nice photo opportunities and food and drinks as much as you want are some of the key characteristics of this tour. You can read my comprehensive guide about Isla Catalina here .

Distance from Bavaro/Punta Cana: 55 miles and 1:15h driving How to get to Isla Catalina: the easiest is to simply book a full-day group excursion from/to Punta Cana * (or a private tour ( check prices here *) if that fits your budget) Further information: Isla Catalina – less-frequented island excursion to paradise

We have already booked our flights and accommodations & are now deciding on what day trips we would like to do. I would like to go to Samana. Perhaps stay one night in Samana. Could we book a car for part of the time we are in Bavaro/Punta Cana?? If so can we rent in town or do we have to rent from the airport?? We will be in Punta Cana for a 10 day stay but do not want to pay for a car for 10 days. Please let us know. Thanks so much. Bye the way, I am also German. My parents are from Kassel Germany:)

punta cana trips for two

yes, that is absolutely possible. You can rent a car in Punta Cana (in the town of Bavaro or at the airport, it depends where you are staying) and head up o Samaná. The roads to Samaná are well-maintained highways, just in the villages of Samaná it is a little bit more chaotic with regards to driving.

For further information on renting a car you can check out this article: https://www.puntacanatravelblog.com/general-information-faq/shall-i-rent-a-car-in-punta-cana/

Move Over Punta Cana! This Dominican Republic Destination Has Lavish Resorts And Stunning Beaches

When you choose your next beach escape, odds are you'll be looking where to spend blissful beach days in Mexico or the Caribbean .

One Caribbean nation that has soared to new heights in terms of tourism is the Dominican Republic.

Even the country's cultural cities have become more popular, like Santiago de los Caballeros and the sprawling capital, Santo Domingo.

Near both cultural hubs are some of the most pristine beach resort towns you'll find along Caribbean shores.

One that is super easy to reach and continues to thrive is La Romana , home to lavish resorts and stunning beaches.

Move Aside Punta Cana! La Romana Is The Place To Be

As someone who just spent 5 days at a luxe resort in Punta Cana , I can easily compare apples to apples since I also spent some time in La Romana.

If you've done any vacation planning along the East Coast or Caribbean, surely you know it's sargassum season.

Sargassum is an unsightly brown algae that invades coastlines for miles and miles ruining your postcard-worthy photo-ops.

Punta Cana, including world-renowned Bavaro Beach, was teeming with icky piles of sargassum baking in the sun, creating not only an eyesore, but an unpleasant odor and constant annoyances trying to swim in the crystal clear waters.

Taking a day trip to La Romana was like flipping a switch from an okay beach vacation to the dreamy paradise you envision when splurging on a Caribbean getaway.

Perfect Conditions For The Ultimate Beach Escape

Not a flake of sargassum was spotted when I swam in various spots throughout the La Romana region.

Setting sail on a Catamaran from Bayahibe, there were stops away from shore to swim and snorkel.

Water conditions were absolutely perfect with warm temperatures and limpid visibility – no seaweed or trash in sight.

Like Zac Brown said, the ‘Only worry in the world is the tide gonna reach my chair', the only worry here is stepping on Starfish as they're a very protected and encouraged by tour guides not to touch.

The only portion not suitable for water activity are the ports of Bayahibe and Isla Saona, where the water is still very clear, but you will need flip-flops to avoid cutting your feet on jagged rocks.

Stunning Tropical Islands

Within close distance from the small resort town of La Romana lies a pair of stunning islands – Isla Saona, and Isla Catalina.

While I can't speak to personal experience with the latter, tourists have left rave reviews with comments like, ‘Saona Island gets all the cred but this was an awesome excursion'.

Home to gorgeous beaches clear waters for snorkeling and diving, this short journey to the island is definitely worth checking out.

I went to Isla Saona. Beyond simply relaxing with endless poolside pinã coladas, this jaw-dropping island was the highlight of my Dominican vacation.

You are instantly welcomed by towering palm trees and sandy pathways giving access to what feels like secret beaches, and it was some of the clearest water I've ever swam in.

No sargassum, jellyfish, garbage, stingrays – nope, just picture-perfect blue waters and white sand.

La Romana's Lavish Resorts

Punta Cana is great, but everyone wants to be here.

The same way Cancun is an awesome vacation spot since everyone knows about, that's not to say you won't have an awesome time in Puerto Escondido.

The same goes for Punta Cana and La Romana. The latter is a very popular resort town but doesn't hold the same recognition.

Vacationers can come here expecting to have the time of their lives the same as you would in Punta Cana, but the experience may be even better.

With high-end all-inclusive resorts such as Hilton, Dreams, and Iberostar, you can't go wrong, especially since the beaches don't find themselves in the path of massive seaweed invasions.
