The story of POWERWOLF , beginning in 2004, reads like a true fairytale, but is the result of the efforts of one of the most hard-working and entertaining live band on the heavy metal planet. POWERWOLF have secured a remarkable collection of gold and platinum awards, starting in 2015, when they reached Gold status for the first time in the Czech Republic with their album, Blessed & Possessed . Additionally, both Preachers Of The Night (2013) and the subsequent masterpiece The Sacrament Of Sin (2018), as well as the groundbreaking streaming event The Monumental Mass: A Cinematic Metal Event (2022), entered the German album and DVD charts at #1 (a massive achievement for an audio-visual release). CONCERT REVIEW: POWERWOLF Unleashed In Times Square For First-Ever US Performance (February 23rd, 2023)

Long-running German metal band Powerwolf have long maintained that they had no plans to tour the United States. It’s a reasonable position to take for a successful band of their genre; the US has generally been ambivalent to traditional and power metal, to the point that even the most massive Eurometallers – Nightwish , for example – had to slog away in tiny Stateside clubs before graduating to the modestly-sized theaters where they usually perform today.

But this has changed. A little over two weeks ago I photographed the smallest of the Big Four, Anthrax , when they headlined a 3100-capacity concert hall.  The granddaddy of power metal, the mighty Helloween , will soon kick off a US tour at the prestigious Dallas hall The Factory (capacity 4300), where the likes of Judas Priest and Erykah Badu perform. Astute readers might note that this is the same venue where Mercyful Fate played their first US show in over two decades last year, before a sold-out crowd. Anthrax, Helloween , and Mercyful Fate all have this in common: I’d previously seen them in San Antonio at the old White Rabbit, a dingy little outhouse that was as active as it was underwhelming. The place could barely contain 500 concertgoers, and of these three bands, only Mercyful sold the place out. In my mind, that bands such as these are again finally playing to crowd sizes they deserve demonstrates that the American metal scene is healthier than it’s been in decades.

I can only assume that the Powerwolf camp noticed this and wisely acted on it, booking concerts in New York City and Massachusetts, as well as a date in Montreal. All sold out quickly, and prompted the band to add dates in Dallas, Denver, San Francisco, and Los Angeles, all in prestigious venues.

Powerwolf’s US debut took place on February 23, 2023 at the Palladium Times Square, a 2100 capacity venue on the corner of Broadway and 44 th Street, in the heart of New York City’s vibrant Theater District. The line in front of the theater already wrapped around the corner by about 2PM, and the enthusiasm was evidenced by all the black shirts and leather jackets that bounced about Times Square. Fans traveled from as far as Nashville, North Carolina, DC, Atlanta, and Texas to attend the first Heavy Metal Mass to be celebrated on US soil, and all the familiar faces I saw gave a strong “ProgPower North” vibe. I even bumped into a few friends I’d made on my first trek on the 70,000 Tons of Metal cruise a few weeks ago, including my esteemed cabin-mate Mark Gromen , whose words I’d read voraciously in my Metal Maniacs -addled youth.

The Palladium was packed . The floor felt like a Tokyo subway car even before openers Seven Kingdoms greeted the hungry crowd with a blistering ten-song set that easily appeased all the power metal nerds in the crowd. Meanwhile, the Powerwolf diehards tested their patience at the merch booth line. The wait was a good forty minutes and in my experience, the sheer length of that line was bested only by the one at the aforementioned Mercyful show in Dallas last fall. The commemorative New York shirt that was made specifically for this concert sold out by the time Sonic Perspectives honcho Joel Barrios and I even made it to the booth.

Powerwolf hit the stage at 9PM and were welcomed by an absolutely ravenous crowd whose shouts were nearly as loud as the opening band was. The expertly-designed set, built to resemble a sinister Gothic cathedral, proved to be the perfect visual representation of what Powerwolf is about: blasphemy and lycanthropy. Beneath the massive upstage riser were human-sized lancet windows bearing stained-glass depictions of werewolves donned in Catholic vestments, and at each end of the risers were lancets that had to have been a good twelve feet tall bearing the same. The downstage-left window looked particularly villainous: the stained glass depicted a howling werewolf crowned with thorns, an eerie if not exactly faithful interpretation of Christ’s agony in Gethsemane. The middle of the three pointed arches over the riser bore perhaps the most subtly irreverent symbol I’ve seen a metal band employ: an enormous bastardization of the Monogramma Christi, that Catholic “chi-rho/ p-x” monogram intended to symbolize Christ, stylized to look like the “p-w” that are essentially Powerwolf’s initials. The recovering Catholic and former altar server in me deemed it eerie as f**k, so mission brilliantly accomplished.

Drummer Roel van Helden appeared first in front of the monogram, and was received with a roar befitting a touchdown before taking his place at the throne of his kit. Keyboardist Christian Jost , alias Falk Maria Schlegl , followed before guitarists Benjamin “Matthew Greywolf” Buss and David “Charles Greywolf” Vogt made their grand entrances. If the screams that awaited van Helden sounded like a crowd that just witnessed a sick sports-ball move, the ones that erupted when front-man Karsten “Atilla Dorn” Brill entered the stage would not have sounded out of place at a goddamn World Cup Final. This audience was pumped.

The corpse-painted quintet’s neo-gothic revival attire and defiled clergy-wear belied their demeanor: they were all smiles, clearly thrilled to be performing on US soil after twenty solid years. They tore into “Faster Than the Flame,”  the raucous opening cut of their most recent album, 2021’s “Call of the Wild.” This song is perhaps most emblematic of their classification as a “power metal” band in that despite its heretical nature and liberal use of church organs and Latin choirs, it is upbeat and  nearly cheerful. I personally reserve the “power metal” label to outwardly happy bands like Freedom Call and such, and I prefer to call groups like Pyramaze, Borealis, and Powerwolf simply “metal” in order to make that distinction, but that’s all whatever. What matters in this moment is that Powerwolf makes sick music for sick people who like to smile, and I count myself among them. And man, what sick smiles we wore.

A cloaked thurifer then presented Dorn with a loaded and burning thurible, which  Dorn then swung around like a defrocked priest to de-consecreate the stage and continue the first American Heavy Metal Mass with “Incense and Iron” and “ Army of the Night.” The eighteen-song set heavily favored the band’s three most recent albums, including such crowd pleasers as “ Demons Are a Girl’s Best Friend,” as well as older favorites like “ Sainted By the Storm, ” “ Sanctified With Dynamite,” and the gloriously cheesy “ Resurrection By Erection. ” Longtime fans were surely disappointed that “Lupus Dei” and “Return in Bloodred” were not represented, but the electrifying performance and “exchange of energy,” as Dorn put it, clearly overrode that upset. I’m not convinced that a single throat that was at the Palladium that night arose not sore the next morning.

Schlegl deserves special mention for being perhaps the most engaging keyboardist in metal. He seizes every opportunity and every key tacet to descend downstage to interact with the crowd, menacing the audience and taunting them with his stole. Easily the band’s most charismatic performer, Schlegl spends nearly as much time tinkling the ivories while standing next to his rig rather than behind it. Think of him as metal’s Lawrence Gowan and you might get the idea. The Greywolf brothers are no slouches either; their facial expressions change damn near as much as their positions on the stage, and their very presence and striking resemblance to one another is nearly as minacious as the music they play.

“Werewolves of Armenia” concluded the nearly two-hour mass, and at last it was possible for folks on the floor to squirm around a bit. I suppose that’s just a part of New York life – everything is so close together that there’s simply no concept of personal space in a GA crowd. Another possibility is that much of the crowd was so hungry for this concert that they simply wanted to be as close to the action as they could. Either way, navigating that crowd was a task so daunting that I wanted no part in it, and I am forever grateful that there is literally no bad seat in the venue, and that Dear Leader Joel and I, short f**kers that we are, saw and heard everything with no difficulty from the very back of the auditorium. I’d have been pretty upset if the foremost purpose for my Unholy Pilgrimage were robbed from me by virtue of everyone else being taller than I am. Suffice it to say, this concert alone would have been worth the journey, and it will forever bolster my already noteworthy metal cred. In nomine lupus, amen.

Powerwolf Play First-Ever North American Show in New York City

The band performed before a sold-out crowd at The Palladium in Times Square

Last night, metal titans Powerwolf performed in North America for the very first time. The band stormed the stage at a sold-out Palladium in New York City to hold the very first heavy metal mass on this continent. For a band of their caliber that has existed for two decades, a trip to North America was long overdue. The fans solidified this fact, showing up in a big way.

Long before doors opened, the line to get into the venue wrapped around the corner down Broadway. Fans were dressed the part, donning similar face paint and wardrobe to that of their heavy metal heroes. One fan went all out, dressed head-to-toe in a full wolf costume that looked like something straight out of a horror movie.

Even earlier in the day, Powerwolf fans from all over the Northeast gathered for a pre-show hangout next door at the Hard Rock Cafe in Times Square.

When doors finally opened, fans flocked to the merch booth. They snatched up merchandise that included a limited edition Heavy Metal Mass NYC t-shirt (which sold out quickly). A rep for the band’s record label said that the staff working the merch booth had never seen anything like it.

After a great opening set from symphonic metal veterans Seven Kingdoms, Powerwolf took the stage as the sold-out crowd chanted their name. The kicked things off with “Faster Than the Flame” and then launched into “Incense & Iron.” The fans were absolutely roaring.

“Thank you,” frontman Attila Dorn said. “It sounds like home.” The singer also took some time to apologize to the audience for taking so long to make it to American to perform. The capacity crowd was just happy to be witnessing a Heavy Metal Mass in person.

Towards the end of the set, the band premiered a new song “Sainted by the Storm.” The track is from their highly anticipated forthcoming release Interludium . The sweeping anthem garnered a more than favorable reaction from the crowd.

Other highlights from the bludgeoning set included “Army of the Night,” “We Drink your Blood,” “Demons Are a Girl’s Best Friend,” and others.

The band wrapped things up with “Let There Be Night.” That couldn’t be it, thought. Not ever a two-decade wait. Fans didn’t take one step towards the door, and chants of “Powerwolf!” could still be heard. Finally, the group returned to the stage for a crushing three-song encore starting with “Sanctified with Dynamite.”

The very first Heavy Metal Mass on North American soil was an absolute triumph. With expectations set sky-high, the band rose to the occasion and delivered. Now, the Powerwolf congregation can only hope that next time the band returns to this continent, it’s at much bigger venues with all the spectacular fire and brimstone we’ve seen throughout their career in other parts of the world.

Due to overwhelming demand, the band recently has added a string of shows to their North American itinerary. They will now be stopping in Dallas, Denver, Los Angeles, and more. Tickets are in sale now  HERE .

Powerwolf Announces First Ever North American Tour

After the success of their North American debut in 2023, German power metal band Powerwolf will return for a full North American run accompanied by Unleash the Archers .

The tour runs from late August to mid-September, starting in Los Angeles, and hits major US markets with a sole Canadian stop to end the tour. While coming off of the release of their ninth album, Interludium, in 2023, the setlist is expected to feature tracks off of their upcoming tenth studio album.

Joining the werewolf priests on the North American trek will be Canadian power metal act Unleash the Archers , who were previously featured on the last Powerwolf album with their cover of "Night of the Werewolves." Their latest album, Abyss , was released in 2020, setting the stage for potentially new tracks to debut on this next tour as well.

POWERWOLF Announces More USA Performances

German metallers POWERWOLF have added more North American shows to their itinerary.

After selling out February performances in New York City and Montreal and Worcester, Massachusetts's ticket counts dangerously low, POWERWOLF is now offering even more chances to join the fun in America this spring. The band has just added March dates in Los Angeles, California; San Francisco, California; Denver, Colorado; and Dallas, Texas to their takeover of North America. Tickets for the newly announced shows will go on sale this Friday, January 13 at 10:00 a.m. local time.

These dates in February and March will be the very first time that North American POWERWOLF fans will get their chance to feed the need for the 'WOLF live and in person. POWERWOLF is internationally renowned for its colossal, breathtaking world-class stage shows, so come see what all of the buzz is about and feast your eyes on one of the most impressive live spectacles in heavy music.

POWERWOLF will release a new album, "Interludium" , on April 7. The LP will feature six new studio songs, including the single "Sainted By The Storm" , which was already celebrated on the band's exhilarating "Wolfsnächte" 2022 headline tour, as well as one of the most intense tracks in the band's history, "My Will Be Done" . "Interludium" will also feature gems and rarities from the band's history such as "Midnight Madonna" and "Living On A Nightmare" .

"Interludium" comes in several editions, most of them containing another exciting surprise: the bonus album "Communio Lupatum II" , where eleven befriended bands like EISBRECHER , ELECTRIC CALLBOY , KORPIKLAANI and RAGE cover some of the biggest hits of POWERWOLF 's career. More limited versions also contain the second bonus album "Interludium Orchestrale" , containing eight orchestral versions of the album tracks.

Powerwolf – 6 june 2023 – Romexpo, Bucharest (RO)

The German power metal band, POWERWOLF, returns to Romania on June 6, 2023 at Romexpo, Open Air. After the sold-out show at the Romanian Arenas in 2019 and after appearing as special guests at the KISS concert in Bucharest in 2022, the Germans are bringing the undead army to fill the Romexpo parking lot on June 6 with a pyrotechnic show of great days. The show is part of the band’s world tour starting in 2022, a show that has already filled most of the halls in the world with many sold out concerts! The first tickets have an earlybird price and go on sale on December 21 at 10:00 am. Fans who bought tickets to the 2019 and 2022 shows on iabilet have the first access to the tickets starting on December 20 from 10:00 a.m. based on a code received by e-mail. Tickets: https://www.iabilet.ro/bilete-powerwolf-romexpo-81387/ Powerwolf come from Germany and have been maintaining the standard of power metal since 2003 when brothers Charles and Matthew Greywolf founded the band. Powerwolf is a band with a special show and image, in which each member has a pseudonym with a history and a well-established place in the band’s universe. Their songs are inspired by medieval legends with vampires, werewolves, but also by stories with religious overtones. The two brothers were joined by the French drummer Stefane Funebre and the German keyboard player Falk Maria Schlegel and shortly after Karsten Brill. Karsten became Attila Dorn and his passion for Romanian legends with werewolves helped to develop the lyrical themes for the band’s future albums. From 2003 until now, the band has remained unchanged with the exception of the drummer. In the 16 years of activity, Powerwolf released 8 albums, albums that reached the charts of over 10 countries. • The Beasts (B) – no seat, behind category A – 159 lei earlybird (the first 200 tickets), 179 lei in the press and 200 lei at the entrance
• Conquistadores (C) – no seat, behind category B – 99 lei earlybird (the first 200 tickets), 119 lei in the press and 150 lei at the entrance

Trupa germana de power metal, Powerwolf, revine in Romania pe data de 6 iunie 2023 la Romexpo, Open Air. Dupa showul sold out de la Arenele Romane din 2019 si dupa prezenta ca invitati speciali la concertul KISS de la Bucuresti din 2022, germanii aduc armata strigoi sa umple parcarea de la Romexpo pe 6 iunie si cu un show pirotehnic de zile mari. Showul face parte din turneul mondial al trupei inceput in 2022, show care a umplut deja majoritatea sarilor din lume cu foarte multe concerte sold out! Primele bilete au pret earlybird si se pun in vanzare pe 21 decembrie la ora 10:00. Fanii care au cumparat bilete la showurile din 2019 s 2022 de pe iabilet au acces primii la bilete incepand cu data de 20 decembrie de la ora 10:00 pe baza unui cod primit pe e-mail.

Powerwolf vin din Germania si tin sus standardul power metalului din 2003 cand fratii Charles si Matthew Greywolf au pus bazele formatiei. Powerwolf este o trupa cu un show si o imagine aparte, in care fiecare membru are un pseudonim cu o istorie si un loc bine stabilit in universul formatiei.

Piesele lor sunt inspirate de legende medievale cu vampiri, varcolaci dar si de povesti cu tenta religioasa.

Celor doi frati li s-a alaturat tobosarul francez Stefane Funebre si claparul german Falk Maria Schlegel iar la scurt timp Karsten Brill. Karsten a devenit Attila Dorn iar pasiunea sa pentru legendele romanesti cu varcolaci a ajutat la dezvolatrea temelor lirice pentru viitoarele albume ale formatiei.

Din 2003 pana in prezent formatia a ramas neschimbata cu exceptia tobosarului. In cei 16 ani de activitate Powerwolf a lansat 8 albume, albume care au ajuns in topurile a peste 10 tari.

– Premium – 399 lei – Pe platforma la inaltime aproape de scena, cu bar si acces separat.

Se pun in vanzare in 9500 de bilete – cate 3000 de fiecare categorie si 500 la categoria Premium

La pretul tuturor biletelor se adauga comisionul de emitere bilete al agentiei de ticketing.
