London theatre behind the scenes: Eight backstage theatre tours you need to do

backstage tours west end

Take a peek behind the curtain at some of London’s most iconic and historic theatres .

From venturing beneath the Royal Albert Hall stage to seeing the West End ’s largest auditorium from the orchestra pit at the London Coliseum, give some of these backstage tours a go.

National Theatre

The National Theatre is a busy place. It puts on more than 20 new productions every year, so there’s always something to see and no two tours are the same. Watch as the sets and props are constructed and painted in the workshop, or visit the costume team as they work on cutting and dyeing the characters’ clothes. The Sherling high-level walkway overlooking the workshops offers a peek free of charge.

Tickets from £11, backstage tours run Mon-Sat, costume tours run selected Saturdays, nationaltheatre.org.uk

Shakespeare’s Globe

No theatre transports you back in time quite like the Globe. With 400 years of history behind it, there’s a lot to learn about its origins and how it operated in Shakespeare ’s day. On their theatre tour you’ll be regaled with stories and secrets of the original 1599 Globe and its reconstruction in the 1990s to become the building it is today. If performances restrict entry to the theatre, Shakespeare’s Southwark Tour is a great alternative and delves into the history of the area as a theatre district in Elizabethan London.

Tickets from £17, running daily, shakespearesglobe.com

Royal Opera House

backstage tours west end

The Covent Garden theatre, the third built on the site after the previous two were destroyed by fire, continues to present the great classical works of music and dance. Their costume collection from opera and ballet performances is a must-see and the tours show everything from the props workshop to dressing rooms. Tours will vary depending on what production is on, but there’s always something magnificent to see.

Tickets from £12.50, Mon-Sat, roh.org.uk

The Royal Shakespeare Company behind the scenes tours give you a glimpse into the Barbican Theatre’s productions before you see the play itself. Find out how the RSC shows come together and investigate the wings and fly tower (the space above the stage holding the rigging and pulleys that allow the stage crew to enact scene changes).

Tickets from £12.50, Mon-Fri, barbican.org.uk

Twenty Theatres to See Before You Die

Royal Albert Hall

From Beyoncé to Cirque du Soleil and Muhammad Ali to Albert Einstein, the Royal Albert Hall has played host to a wealth of stars. Learn little known facts about the space and explore the off-limits areas too with tours running throughout the year. Head underneath the stage and into one of the dressing rooms where the artists get ready to perform. You may even hear one of them in soundcheck if you’re lucky.

Tickets from £16.75, Mon-Tue, royalalberthall.com

London Coliseum

backstage tours west end

Theatreland tours, free audio walking tour, voiced by ian mckellen.

Ian McKellen Theatreland Audio Tour

Taking you from theatre to theatre on a route from Leicester Square through to Covent Garden, Embankment and The Strand, McKellen will divulge secrets of the stage and tell the story of some of the capital’s most fascinating buildings.

You’ll travel back in time to experience Theatreland as it was for actors and audiences 300 years ago, before electric lights and moving sets, when audiences showed their disapproval by throwing fruit at the stage. With McKellen as your guide, you’ll learn the stories of the actors, architects and managers who shaped this unique part of London, turning it from one of the city’s most disreputable slums to the glittering heart of British theatre.

As you wind your way through the backstreets and alleyways of the West End, McKellen will recount fascinating stories from his illustrious career on the stage; his favourite venues, his least favourite performances and where he made his professional acting debut.

To get this FREE audio tour:

1. Install VoiceMap on your phone 2. Sign up with email or Facebook, tap for London tours, then look for “Theatreland Tour with Ian McKellen” in London. 3. Download the tour with WiFi. 4. Head to the TKTS ticket booth in Leicester Square, where the tour begins and ends.

What's on?

Best sellers, deals & last minute, please let us backstage london's backstage theatre tours.

Updated on 30 April 2024

Want to see what goes on behind the scenes of your favourite West End Shows? Me too!

I've just recently got back from a fascinating back stage tour of The National Theatre and wish a few more of our West End theatre's would offer this opportunity. Theatres currently offering this are few and far between, and it's a shame more don't allow enthusiasts like us the chance  to see how things work. I've listed below a few that are definitely worth a visit.

The National Theatre, The Southbank This is a huge place with a vast back stage area where sets are built, painted and stored. The building itself employs around a thousand people and it was brilliant to see all of the dressing rooms and tech areas. With huge performing spaces and the ability to host multiple shows at once, this is a fascinating place.

The Theatre Royal, Drury Lane Currently the home of Charlie and the chocolate factory, this is one of the biggest theatres in the West end with a capacity of 2196 and truly vast backstage area. I went on a back stage tour of The Theatre Royal Drury Lane many years ago when the original production of Miss Saigon was playing there. Standing on the stage and looking out at the vast auditorium was a real treat. The huge backstage area which housed the helicopter and car was awesome and I plan to repeat the experience so I can take in the current occupants

Shakespeare's Globe This London landmark is a reconstruction of The Globe where Shakespeare was first able to put on some of his most famous plays. The backstage tour incorporates the exhibits in the museum and a great look around the outside stage area. You can book your Shakespeare's Globe exhibition tickets now with London Theatre Direct!

The London Palladium Currently the home of the revival of Cats, who wouldn't want to take a look at where the moggies prowl. This wonderfully historical theatre has recently undergone some refurbishments and is a must for all fanatics.

The Phoenix Theatre Although not a backstage tour, if you visit the Pheonix Theatre to see Once you are invited to go to the onstage bar for a drink both before curtain up and during the interval. I used this opportunity to stand in the centre of the stage and look out on the audience (who wouldn't?).

The Royal Court  The Royal Court has recently enjoyed some great West End transfers, most noticeably the dark but compelling The a Nether. You'll visit rehearsal rooms and learn about the history of the company.

The Royal Opera house  The large and grand The Royal Opera house offers tours of there Covent Garden theatre. This tour includes a look at their ingenious stage system which allows them to perform two different shows within a short space of time.

I would love a tour of The Apollo Victoria Theatre  to see how Wicked works, or the Adelphi Theatre  to get a closer look at the DeLorean in Back To The Future The Musical . How about The Queens Theatre to see the barricade or Her Majesty's Theatre to see how the famous boat floats across the stage?

My fellow theatre fanatics and I, would love to see more backstage tours please!

Moyes leaving West Ham at the end of the season. Lopetegui linked as the replacement

LONDON (AP) — David Moyes will leave his role as West Ham manager when his contract expires at the end of the season.

West Ham made the announcement on Monday to end speculation about Moyes’ future, with the club having reportedly interviewed other managers already.

The BBC reported on Monday that Julen Lopetegui, the former Spain and Real Madrid coach, has agreed to come in as Moyes’ replacement. West Ham said only that the recruitment process for Moyes’ successor had begun and the club would be making no further comment.

Moyes is in his second stint at the club after returning in December 2019. In the last 4 1/2 years, he has led the team to the Europa Conference League title last season — its first major trophy since 1980 — and two top-seven finishes in the English Premier League.

“David has been responsible for a period of great progress and success in our history,” West Ham joint-chairman David Sullivan said, “and we are extremely grateful for all of his hard work, commitment and dedication to the role.

“David has been an absolute professional to work with and he will leave with our greatest respect and good wishes — he deserves to be held in the highest esteem for the service he has given to West Ham United.”

The club said Moyes’ departure was by mutual consent and that announcing it before the end of the season gives him the opportunity “to get the send-off he deserves from the West Ham supporters.”

“The club is in a stronger position than when I returned back in 2019,” said Moyes, whose position has come under scrutiny after a recent run of poor results including a 5-0 loss at Chelsea on Sunday.

“When I joined West Ham for a second time, the club was one place above the relegation zone, and it has been a terrific journey to have achieved three consecutive seasons in Europe.”

The 61-year-old Moyes previously managed Everton, Manchester United and Sunderland in the Premier League.

Lopetegui’s last job was at Wolverhampton in the Premier League. He quit days before the start of this season after less than a year in charge.

Akuma rages into Street Fighter 6 on May 22

Akuma rages into Street Fighter 6 on May 22

Akuma will challenge foes worthy enough to face him in Fighting Ground, World Tour, and the Battle Hub.

backstage tours west end

Legend tells of a man so consumed by his pursuit of strength that his soul and body have now faded into nothingness. Though many wish he were a mere legend, Akuma will rise again in Street Fighter 6 , to challenge foes worthy enough to face him on May 22. Will you harness the power of the Satsui no Hado or succumb to it?

Akuma made his debut in Super Street Fighter II Turbo as a hidden boss and playable character. In Street Fighter 6, Akuma’s thirst for strength has taken a maddening toll. He carves figures of the hundreds of opponents he has felled and places them in the cave he resides, their silence beckoning him to fall deeper into his path of inner strife.

backstage tours west end

Nakayama-san’s comments on his design: Akuma now has a more striking presence complete with gray hair. We also used Buddha statues and animals as references for his musculature in an attempt to give the character a more memorable aesthetic.

backstage tours west end

Like the rest of the Year 1 characters, Akuma can become your Master in World Tour. Find him in a new area, Enma’s Hollow, located on the island of Gokuento, but beware the effects of the Satsui no Hado lest you become tormented by its hunger. After increasing your bond with Akuma, he’ll teach you his demonic moves, which you can then assign to your avatar to be used in your World Tour travels or in Avatar Battles in the Battle Hub.

As a man who has spent his life honing his skills, Akuma’s move set will be familiar to long-time fans, but the Satsui no Hado has unlocked new abilities. His fast walk speed and long-reaching normals allow him to control space and the flow of the fight.

backstage tours west end

Let’s start with Akuma’s iconic moves that make him a well-rounded pursuer. His infamous fireball, Gou Hadoken is back, and can be charged up so that a “red fireball” is released instead, giving Akuma more options upon hit or block. Everyone’s favorite air fireball, Zanku Hadoken, can cover Akuma’s aggressive approach. His dragon punch, Gou Shoryuken, works as an anti-air or as a combo ender. Finally, Tatsumaki Zanku-Kyaku sees Akuma spinning forward in a series of kicks that change properties based on which kick button is pressed.

backstage tours west end

Like his previous iterations, Akuma uses Ashura Senku to glide on the battlefield cloaked in shadows. Be wary of using this ability since it can be stopped mid-way by an opponent’s attacks. However, Akuma has honed this move’s vulnerabilities and can now use Oboro Throw during the approach to surprise opponents.

backstage tours west end

Adamant Flame is one of Akuma’s new moves, where he performs a forward thrust engulfed in flames. This move is useful in combos and for exploiting vulnerable opponents due to its long reach. The OD version will wall splat opponents, opening up more opportunities in the corner.

Demon Raid is the Street Fighter 6 version of Hyakkishu. As Akuma leaps into the air with this move, choose to follow up with a low kick, overhead attack, dive kick, or to end the leap early. The OD version of Demon Raid unlocks two more follow-ups: an air fireball and an air tatsu.

backstage tours west end

Akuma’s Level 1 Super Art is Messatsu Gohado, where he fires a highly concentrated ball of Satsui no Hado. Like most Level 1s, this move is invulnerable on start-up. Akuma has a second Level 1 called Tenma Gozanku where he unleashes the fireball from the air.

backstage tours west end

Empyrean’s End is Akuma’s Level 2 Super Art where he turns the Satsui no Hado into a powerful flame and ignites it within the opponent. Using this move close to the corner will result in a wall splat where Akuma can continue his pressure or damage. Empyrean’s End is also invulnerable on start-up.

backstage tours west end

Akuma’s first Level 3 Super Art is Sip of Calamity, another move that is invulnerable on start-up! He throws opponents on the ground with their face and follows up with a single devastating blow.

backstage tours west end

Finally, the move you’ve all been waiting for: Shun Goku Satsu or the “Raging Demon.” This second Level 3 Super Art can only be performed when his Vitality is low enough for a Critical Art and can be used to end combos. This time, he allows you to see what happens during the one-second worth of nightmares.

Coming with this update is a new stage, Enma’s Hollow, where Akuma resides to continue his hellbent training. Year 1 Ultimate Pass owners will receive this stage on May 22.

backstage tours west end

Akuma’s Outfit 2 is inspired by his debut look in Super Street Fighter II Turbo. Speaking of outfits, Rashid, A.K.I., Ed, and Akuma will have their Outfit 3s also available for purchase when Akuma releases, and will automatically be distributed to all Year 1 Ultimate Pass owners.

One last thing before we sign off. With the Akuma update comes the major balance patch we mentioned in the past where all characters will receive changes. We’ll have more to share about this in the future as we approach May 22.

Get ready to unleash your inner demon when Akuma rages in!

(May 1, 2024)—Nashville’s historic Ryman Auditorium has announced a four-night residency featuring GRAMMY Award-winning Country Music Hall of Famer and Grand Ole Opry Member Vince Gill. The Ryman Residency, “An Evening with Vince Gill,” will run from Aug. 1 to 4 . Tickets go on sale this Friday, May 3, at 10 a.m. CT at ryman.com .

Gill’s Ryman Residency will mark his first solo performance at the Mother Church since his four-night, sold-out residency in 2022, which was part of the Ryman’s 130th-anniversary celebration. Already a fixture on the Ryman stage with his wife, Amy Grant, and their annual ‘Christmas at the Ryman’ shows, Gill has performed over 100 times at the venue.

“Of all the great concert halls in America and throughout the world, the Ryman is by far my favorite,” Gill says of playing the historic Ryman stage. “I knew it was a unique venue the first time I set foot on the stage over 30 years ago. It was just me and an acoustic guitar and to this day that moment was like nothing I’ve ever experienced.”
