Tom has always adopted a modest clothing style. The talented actor is often seen wearing a simple black t-shirt, black pants, and a leather jacket during day-offs. Nowadays Tom Cruise is one of the biggest Hollywood stars on the planet, but like most megastars, he had relatively humble beginnings. Starting out with bit parts during the early 1980s, he quickly shot into the stratosphere with blockbuster after blockbuster.

Cruise, who took up acting in high school, made his film debut in Endless Love (1981). He had supporting roles in such movies as Taps (1981) and The Outsiders (1983) before starring as a high-school senior who turns his parents’ home into a brothel in Risky Business (1983). The movie was a major success, earning Cruise widespread recognition. His star status was cemented with Top Gun (1986), the highest-grossing film of that year, in which he played a navy jet pilot.

In 1986, Cruise appeared opposite Paul Newman in The Color of Money , which was directed by Martin Scorsese, and two years later starred as an autistic man’s selfish brother in Rain Man . For his portrayal of a Vietnam War veteran turned activist in Born on the Fourth of July (1989), Cruise received his first Academy Award nomination.

There's a lot that can be said about Tom Cruise . The star is a Golden Globe-winning actor, producer, and dad of three . Cruise is known in Hollywood as one of the highest-paid stars, and he's held that status for decades.

Cruise is the only son of four children, who was raised by his mom, Mary Lee (née Pfeiffer), a special education teacher, and dad, Thomas Cruise Mapother III, an electrical engineer. His parents were both from Louisville, Kentucky, where he lived for 11 years, but Cruise moved to Glen Ridge, New Jersey, with his mother following his parents' divorce in 1973, per IMDb .

Tom Cruise had big plans to become a Hollywood star, and he set off to New York City with his dreams at the forefront. Though he struggled to get his career off the ground in the beginning, he persevered and kept auditioning before landing his debut gig in 1981's "Endless Love," starring icon Brooke Shields. That same year, he appeared alongside Sean Penn in "Taps."

By 1983, Cruise was establishing himself as an up-and-coming heavyweight, snagging roles in 1983's "Losin' It," "Risky Business," and "The Outsiders." He portrayed the character of Steve Randle, a member of the group of young actors dubbed the "Brat Pack," with Emilio Estevez, Matt Dillon, and Rob Lowe. Though "The Outsiders" didn't receive the praise it was hoping, the gig led to roles in 1985's "Legend," and ultimately, his iconic starring appearance in 1986's " Top Gun ."

"Top Gun," which became the highest-grossing film of that year (via Chicago Tribune ), confirmed Cruise's status as an A-list actor and catapulted the star into a life of fame and superstardom. According to Box Office Mojo , the action-romance flick, which follows the story of Cruise's character, Lt. Pete "Maverick" Mitchell, as he joins an elite naval flight school, has earned more than $176 million in the box office to this day.

Tom Cruise becomes one of Hollywood's highest-paid actors by the 1990s

With "Top Gun" on his résumé, Tom Cruise established himself as a Hollywood hotshot, and by that time, he was making the big bucks. In the late 1990s, Cruise snagged the title of one of showbiz's highest-paid actors in the world, according to Celebrity Net Worth .

The handsome heartthrob had already earned $9 million for 1990's "Days of Thunder" and another $15 million for his work on "Interview With the Vampire" in 1994, but his bank account skyrocketed when he landed the starring role in "Mission Impossible" in 1996. Entertainment Weekly reported he "pocketed $70 million" for the hit action film, and he also "negotiated a chunk of 'Mission's' overall $465 million gross."

Cruise's monetary gain is so impressive that a report from Casumo claims he pockets more than $7,000 per word. "When taking into account everything he's been in for almost 40 years, supposedly it's as much as $7,091 per word," CinemaBlend reported in April 2020.

But, while Cruise has more money than one could ever imagine, the producer knows he has earned every dollar in his $600 million fortune. Tom Cruise falls in love with Nicole Kidman and starts a family

As he was cementing his place in the entertainment industry, Tom Cruise was also experiencing changes in his love life. The star walked down the aisle with his first wife, Mimi Rogers , in 1987, and they were together for three years. After they split in 1990, though, Cruise was not single for long, as he developed a deep bond with Nicole Kidman when they met on the set of "Days of Thunder."

Cruise wasn't the only one who was instantly smitten. "He swept me off my feet," Kidman recalled to Vanity Fair in December 2002. "I fell madly, passionately in love." Later that year, Cruise and Kidman said "I do," and by 1995, they were the parents of their adopted kids, daughter Isabella Jane Cruise and son Connor Cruise .

By April 2005, Cruise's personal life started making headlines once again when he publicly debuted his relationship with Katie Holmes .

While many speculated their romance was a publicity stunt, as Cruise was starring in "War of the Worlds" while Holmes was cast as the lead in "Batman Begins," they proved how serious they were when they got engaged less than two months later in June, per The Hollywood Reporter . Before they got the chance to walk down the aisle, though, Cruise expanded his family when Holmes gave birth to their daughter, Suri Cruise , in April 2006.

"I trained for a year and a half to fly the helicopter," Tom told The Hollywood Reporter.

In 2020, Tom Cruise was rumored to be getting closer with actress Hayley Atwell as they filmed "Mission: Impossible — Death Reckoning Part One" amid the coronavirus pandemic, though neither has confirmed nor denied reports of romance. It is a big weekend if your name is Tom Cruise and you’re a massive Hollywood heavyweight, as the action hero is celebrating his 60th birthday today.

He has a lot to celebrate at the moment, as Top Gun sequel Maverick is currently flying high at the box office, easily smashing through the $1billion mark worldwide.

That’s definitely a huge gift within itself.

There is no denying that he’s still at the top of his game, but how does he do it? 

In honor of Tom’s milestone big day, we’ve taken a stroll down memory lane to relieve some of his best moments and see what makes the Cruiser the last of the Hollywood icons.

1962: Cruise was born in Syracuse, New York. His full name was Thomas Cruise Mapother IV, but he was shrewd enough to shorten it. 

Suddenly, he stopped sounding like an absent-minded uncle in a Dickens novel and started sounding like a super-cool movie star.

1983: Risky Business. You may not remember much about this teen comedy drama, but everyone remembers Cruise being simultaneously silly and sexy as he dances around in his shirt, pants and socks. A star was born!

1989: Born On The Fourth of July. Cruise proved that he was more than a set of shiny teeth by playing Ron Kovic, Vietnam veteran turned anti-war activist. 

He earned the first of his three Oscar nominations, the last of which was for Magnolia in 2000. The last for now, that is …

1999: Eyes Wide Shut. Cruise and Nicole Kidman signed up for six months’ work on Stanley Kubrick’s erotic psychodrama, but they stuck it out for 15 months, hence Eyes Wide Shut holds the Guinness World Record for the longest ever unbroken film shoot. 

Cruise is no quitter – although his marriage to Kidman broke down soon afterwards.

2000: Mission: Impossible 2. Cruise dangled by one hand from a cliff, 2000 feet above the Utah desert.

And that’s really him doing the dangling, even if he had a safety rope which was digitally erased. 

Of course, the scene was hardly essential to the story, but it gave the Mission: Impossible series its raison d’etre: to show audiences a Hollywood legend doing his own insanely demanding stunts. A risky business, indeed.

2005: The Sofa Incident. Here’s where things went a bit wrong. Cruise was on The Oprah Winfrey Show to promote War Of The Worlds, but he raved about Katie Holmes and jumped on Oprah’s sofa instead. 

Between this loved-up gymnastics display and his attacks on psychiatry, Cruise acquired an unfortunate reputation for being a weirdo Scientologist. 

Lesson learnt; he’s been a lot quieter about his private life ever since.

2007: Lions For Lambs. This smug political drama isn’t great, but it IS directed by Robert Redford, and it remains the most recent example of Cruise working with a really big-name director. 

Young Cruise makes a point of ticking them off: Kubrick, Steven Spielberg, Oliver Stone, Michael Mann, etc. But now he prefers to be the boss himself. 

Whoever the director may be, it’s Cruise’s vision of what constitutes an efficiently entertaining film that counts. Fair enough. If it weren’t for such control freakery, he probably wouldn’t have maintained his megastar status. 

But wouldn’t it be exciting if he collaborated with a challenging auteur once again?

2012: Jack Reacher. Cruise hasn’t made many iffy career choices, but deciding that he was the man to play Lee Child’s 6 ft 5 inch blonde vigilante was one of them. 

2017: The Mummy. Okay, so this is another iffy choice. Let’s move swiftly on.

Still, the film was written and directed by Christopher McQuarrie, who has since made every instalment of Mission: Impossible, so at least Cruise got a trusty new creative partner out of the deal.

2022: Top Gun: Maverick. A sequel to the most 1980s-ish of all 1980s movies, released 36 years after the original?

It should have been a disaster, but Cruise’s obsessive quality control paid off – and the fact that he hadn’t aged a day since the first film probably helped. 

2022: Cannes Film Festival. During an on-stage Q&A, a French journalist asks Cruise why he does his own stunts. 

Cruise’s reply: ‘No one asks Gene Kelly, why do you dance? Why do you do your own dancing?’

Yep, he’s passionate about what he does, all right.

TG:M has taken over $1billion at the box office, making it the year’s biggest cinema hit – and Cruise’s own highest grossing film. 

Don’t bet against him winning that long-awaited Best Actor Oscar next year.

Shortly after starting his acting career in the 1980s, Tom snagged his role in Risky Business (who can forget that amazing dance scene by the staircase?!) as well as the role of US Navy pilot LT Pete “Maverick” Mitchell in 1986’s Top Gun . He then went on to appear in other high-profile roles in films like The Color of Money (1986), Rain Man (1988), and Born on the Fourth of July (1989), for which he received a Golden Globe Award and a nomination for the Academy Award for Best Actor.

His film career expanded even further when he appeared in 1992’s A Few Good Men and the thriller The Firm the following year. 1996’s Jerry Maguire , in which Tom played a sports agent who comes across some hard times and falls in love at the same time, was another huge role that came after the success of Interview with the Vampire in 1994. He won a Golden Globe Award for Best Actor for the role and his second nomination for an Academy Award.

Tom won another Golden Globe Award and received another Academy Award nomination for his role in 1999’s Magnolia . The film was followed by the series of one of his most popular features, Mission: Impossible . He starred as Ethan Hunt in all six of the films, starting from 1996 until 2018, and in 2020, he was filming the seventh installment in Rome.

In addition to his incredible acting skills, Tom is known for often doing his own stunts , even when they’re dangerous ones. He has proven time and time again that he takes his job very seriously and is willing to go above and beyond to portray whatever role he takes on in the best way he can. Nearly 40 Years Later, See the Cast of "Top Gun" Then and Now

Thirty-six years after the original " Top Gun " hit theaters, its sequel, " Top Gun: Maverick ," is still packing a powerful punch for fans of the first film and new audiences alike. The film, which stars familiar characters Pete "Maverick" Mitchell and Tom "Iceman" Kazansky, centers around Maverick's return to TOPGUN to train a new set of ambitious, experienced Navy pilots in the years following his experience at the flight school over three decades ago.

"Top Gun: Maverick" keeps the nostalgic, lively tone that first drew viewers to the screen in the 1980s but revitalizes Maverick's story in a way that is equally as poignant. While some characters of the original "Top Gun" are present in the sequel, there are others that did not physically return for "Top Gun: Maverick," though their presence is established in the film. Let's look back the cast of "Top Gun" from their days in the original movie compared to today.

Tom Cruise as Pete "Maverick" Mitchell Then

In the original "Top Gun," Tom Cruise played the ambitious, daring, and certifiably handsome Pete "Maverick" Mitchell. In the film, Maverick is a young lieutenant who trains in the US Navy's Fighter Weapons School (aka TOPGUN) alongside his best friend, Nick "Goose" Bradshaw. When "Top Gun" was released in 1986, Cruise was an up-and-coming actor. He appeared in films like "The Outsiders" and "Risky Business" before landing his role in "Top Gun."

Since his early days of acting in the 1980s, Cruise has established himself as one of Hollywood's most dependable stars. He has led several critically acclaimed films over the years, including "Rain Man," "A Few Good Men," "Mission Impossible," and "Jerry Maguire." Most recently, he is known for playing Jack Reacher in the self-titled film series.

The road leading to Cruise reprising his role was a long one that had dragged out for years. In an interview on " The Graham Norton Show ," he told the host how the process unfolded. "For years, the studios wanted me to do it and audiences wanted me to do it . . . And there was just a moment where Jerry Bruckheimer wanted to do it, and he came to me, we were talking about it and just came up with some good ideas," he said. "It was just that moment, I thought, 'If I'm gonna ever do this, now's the time.'"

Val Kilmer is notorious for playing Maverick's cocky, competitive rival in the original "Top Gun." In the film, Maverick and Iceman both attend TOPGUN flight school, which leads them to butt heads and compete against one another to be the best pilot. Prior to his role in the original "Top Gun," Kilmer starred in two other feature films, "Top Secret!" and "Real Genius." After the film's release in 1986, Kilmer's career took off.

Following the success of "Top Gun," Kilmer landed roles in several successful films in the '90s, including "The Doors," "True Romance," and "Batman Forever." The actor continued working well throughout the end of the '90s and into the 2000s, but by 2014, he was diagnosed with throat cancer . After receiving chemotherapy and a tracheotomy, Kilmer has limited use of his voice, but that didn't stop him from taking on acting projects like "Top Gun: Maverick."

In the film, Kilmer's character, Iceman, has limited lines , but his voice is loud and clear on screen due to the help of a company that re-created his voice using AI technology. In 2020, he vaguely discussed his role in the "Top Gun" sequel with ET and praised his costar Tom Cruise, saying, "I have to tell you, Tom Cruise is very cool. That is all I can tell you. The rest you will have to [find out]."

Kelly McGillis as Charlotte "Charlie" Blackwood Then

What's a good action flick without a sprinkle of romance? Actor Kelly McGillis played the role of Maverick's love interest, Charlotte "Charlie" Blackwood. The character of Charlie is not just a pretty face, however. In "Top Gun," she is an instructor at the flight school and woos Maverick with her brains and beauty. Before appearing in the film, McGillis starred alongside Harrison Ford in the 1985 film "Witness," which earned her Golden Globe and BAFTA nominations.

Kelly McGillis Now

After "Top Gun," McGillis continued acting in film, television, and even plays. Some of her film appearances include "The Accused," "Winter People," and "The Babe." Outside of her roles on screen, she has also performed on stage in Shakespeare plays like "The Twelfth Night" and "The Merchant of Venice." She most recently landed roles in TV movies, such as "An Uncommon Grace" and "Maternal Secrets."

Despite being a lead character in the original film, McGillis is not in "Top Gun: Maverick ." When asked by ET in 2019 if she was approached to return for the sequel, she jokingly said, "Oh my god, no. They did not, nor do I think they would ever. I mean, I'm old and I'm fat, and I look age appropriate for what my age is, and that is not what that whole scene is about."

Anthony Edwards as Nick "Goose" Bradshaw Then

Before Iceman, Nick "Goose" Bradshaw, played by Anthony Edwards, was Maverick's best friend and wingman. In "Top Gun," Goose is a radar intercept officer who grows close with Maverick as they train together at the flight school. Unfortunately, Goose tragically dies in a flight accident and leaves behind his best friend, wife Carole, and a son named Bradley "Rooster" Bradshaw .

Edwards landed a few roles in successful films before his appearance in "Top Gun" and had acting credits that included "Fast Times at Ridgemont High" and "Revenge of the Nerds" at the time.

Anthony Edwards Now

"Top Gun" was just the beginning of a prolific career for Edwards. Along with a number of movie roles, Edwards is perhaps most known for his portrayal of Dr. Mark Greene in the medical drama series "ER," which he worked on from 1994 to 2002 and then again in 2008. Most recently, he appeared in Apple TV+ 's series " WeCrashed ," as well as Netflix's " Inventing Anna ." Due to his character's death in the first "Top Gun," Edwards did not have a role in the sequel.

Meg Ryan as Carole Bradshaw Then

One of Meg Ryan's first movie roles was in "Top Gun," where she played Carole Bradshaw, the wife of Nick "Goose" Bradshaw. Carole is the mother of Bradley Bradshaw, who grows up to follow in his father's footsteps in "Top Gun: Maverick." Prior to acting in the film, Ryan had a few small roles in "Rich and Famous" and "Amityville 3-D."

Meg Ryan Now

Ryan's career blossomed during the 1990s. Throughout the decade, the actor starred in a handful of hugely popular movies, including "The Doors," "Sleepless in Seattle," and "You've Got Mail." Over her career, Ryan has earned several accolades, including three Golden Globe nominations.

The actor did not reprise her role in "Top Gun: Maverick ," which was a choice by the film's director, Joseph Kosinski. He told Cinemablend that the choice was influenced by his idea to introduce a new perspective to Maverick's life, saying, "Clearly, their spirits hang over the film in certain ways. There is a glimpse, as you guys know, of both of them in the film. But it was important that we wanted to make sure we were telling a new chapter of Maverick's life. We didn't want to be looking back the whole time."

And while they largely stay out of the limelight, they appeared together in a still recent public pic with Tom Cruise – days after refusing to do the same with Nicole Kidman.

Sometimes, celebrity photos surface on other accounts and do not immediately gain traction. That is the case with a December 2023 photo that former NFL player Derrick Brooks shared on Instagram .

In the now resurfaced pic, Brooks explained that Cruise had stopped by ahead of a hockey game.

“Good Evening, Wow, look who stopped by my office before our [Tampa Bay Lightning] game tonight! @tomcruise,” Brooks wrote in the caption. “I was a little star struck but played it cool and He said he was too!”

Now, a doctor explained what’s likely going on with the 61-year old, providing possible answers to Cruise’s curious fan base.

One Doctor Claims Tom Likely Had Liposuction

Speaking to Daily Mail , Dr. David Hill, a plastic surgeon based in Chicago, says Tom’s loose skin around the midsection could be a consequence of liposuction.

Liposuction is a surgical procedure designed to remove small pockets of fat from specific areas of the body where fat tends to accumulate, such as the buttocks, hips, thighs, and abdomen. The procedure involves using a suction technique to eliminate these fat deposits, which can sometimes result in loose skin in the treated areas.

“Usually, if you lose weight naturally over time, you get less of that skin rippling and irregularity, because it's gradual,” the doctor explained.

“With liposuction, because it's more immediate, the skin doesn't have time to contract as much... so Tom's Cruise's saggy skin could be a hallmark of [liposuction],” he went on.

How Old Is Tom Cruise During His Most Dangerous Stunts?

Tom Cruise's dangerous stunts make his action movies exciting for fans to watch, but his age during the stunts make them really impressive.

Dr. Hill, who has never worked with Cruise, couldn’t confirm if the actor has had liposuction done. But if he did undergo the cosmetic procedure, the medical expert says it was done by a talented dsurgical team.

“I don't see any hallmarks of irregular contour on his body that would suggest bad liposuction, but there is enhanced muscle definition, which is reflective of his earlier photos when he was younger,” he explained. “If they did it, they did it well.”

Another Doctor Says Tom’s Saggy Skin Is Aging

However, not every medical professional believes Tom’s sagging skin is a result of going under the knife. In fact, another doctor told Daily Mail that, in his expert opinion, this is just a sign of aging. Though Tom looks decades younger, particularly in the face, many fans fail to remember he’s in his 60s.

Dr Howard Sobel, a cosmetic dermatologic surgeon who practices at New York’s Lenox Hill Hospital, explained, “In any 61-year-old guy you would expect to have some skin sagging, because as we get older, we lose that elasticity in our skin.”

The doctor added, “The areas of your chest, and the areas below your chest, the skin around your ribs and your abs are very often the first to lose the elasticity, especially in a man.”

As individuals get older, their skin's collagen and elastin levels gradually diminish, leading to a loss of strength and firmness. Dr. Hill pointed out that sagging skin is generally a complication observed in patients who need to lose a significant amount of fat, a scenario that does not apply to Tom Cruise, but his changing look can still be the result of ageing.

For now, Cruise hasn’t responded to the speculation over his recent photos.

The movie star -- sporting navy swim shorts -- was radiating while living it up at Majorca's Formentor beach in Spain over the weekend ... showing off his chiseled physique as he got in the water and enjoyed a little R&R amid his very busy life.

Earlier that same day ... Tom was seen fully clothed ... sporting a grey top, shorts, and fedora as he hopped onboard a sailboat with filmmaker Alejandro Gonzalez Iñarritu -- likely chatting about his role in AGI's upcoming film, for which they're teaming up.

No ifs, ands, or buts about it from the looks of these pics -- the man's in great shape, just like back in his early movie star days, when his toned physique was frequently on display, like in 1986's "Top Gun." Frankly, we doubt if he's ever NOT been totally shredded.

Back in the day, his youth might have explained his tip-top shape -- but nowadays ... you could argue Tom's love for shooting his own action-packed stunts are keeping him toned and fit. We're sure he's hitting the gym too ... 'cause yeah, the homeboy is straight-up yoked.
