With vacation season in full swing, there’s no better time to pare down your beauty assortment to curate your must-have travel makeup essentials. Whether you’re adhering to TSA guidelines or just want to pack lightly, most of us will not be traveling with our complete makeup collection.

While planning your trip details and what to wear are certainly exciting tasks, editing your beauty stash can actually be quite stressful. The entire process makes one reflect on what you’ll need on hand once you reach your destination—especially if you’re going somewhere without a drug store for last-minute beauty buys. Regardless, you’ll want at least one complexion product to even skin tone and veil imperfections, along with multitasking pigments to bring warmth and subtle color to the face. And let’s not forget how you’ll store all your makeup to avoid spills or damage.

Here, we’ve created the ultimate makeup packing guide for your summer holiday and beyond.

Trusted Organizers

First things first, determine what travel makeup organizers work best for you. Maybe you already own the best toiletry bag that can fit both your skin-care and makeup necessities, or perhaps you’d prefer to store them separately. Away’s water-resistant case offers spacious compartments, transparent pockets, and even a detachable makeup brush organizer—perfect to secure in your carry-on. Otherwise, consider Longchamp’s zippered pouch, which is compact enough to pop in your purse or personal item for easy access.

From the Oscars red carpet to the Met Gala , experts wax on about the importance of skin prep for glowing, beautiful skin with or without makeup. So, rely on skin-nourishing products and face primers to prep your base. We’d reach for Tatcha’s The Silk Canvas to weightlessly nourish, blur, protect, and prime—or, the French beauty favorite Embryolisse cream to restore skin moisture and leave a satin finish.

Multitasking Tools

Maybe you’re fine with applying all of your makeup products with your fingers. If not though, don’t forget to pack the beauty tools you rely on at home to perfect your look. For brushes , consider a dual-ended option that pairs two different brush types in one, like this Hourglass option suitable for powder, bronzer, blush, and highlighter. On the other hand, classics like the Beautyblender sponge make blending liquid, cream, and powder products a dream.

Foolproof Complexion

Selecting your vacation complexion products is arguably the hardest part, with so many different types of foundations, concealers, and powders to choose from—many of us requiring multiple shades for a brightened under-eye or combat hyperpigmentation. You can’t go wrong with Ilia’s Super Serum Skin Tint for lightweight, dewy coverage that even boasts sun protection and nourishing ingredients (read: niacinamide, squalane, and hyaluronic acid). For concealer, the Kosas’s creamy formula not only offers dewy medium coverage, but brightens, soothes, and plumps skin over time thanks to a blend of caffeine, peptides, vitamins, and hyaluronic acid. Seriously, who can say no to efficacious clean concealers and foundations ?

Set the Look

Even on vacation, it’s important to lock your look in place appropriately. Charlotte Tilbury’s setting powder is excellent to have on hand to reduce shine and blur skin where you need it, earning bonus points for mess-free application (as opposed to loose setting powder options). Then, spritz your face with Supergoop!’s mist that sets and protects against UV rays and pollutants. In fact, a similar formula by the brand saved Vogue commerce writer Alexis Bennett’s makeup during Coachella .

Enticing Eyes

Bring your go-to eye look on your tip by way of the best mascara and eyeliners —both of which work wonders to make your eyes pop and enhance their shape. For smudge-free lengthening and lifting, reach for Merit’s clean mascara. To perfect your signature wing or add some dimension to your look, Ilia’s liquid water-proof formula allows you to precisely etch liner however you see fit, thanks to a fine felt tip.

Tinted Lips

Makeup artists say that the key to nailing a minimalist makeup look is adding an accent of color. One of the easiest ways to do so throughout travel is by keeping a tinted lip product on hand for a statement-making moment. Kosas’s gloss delivers a lip filler effect by visibly plumping the lips—especially if paired with a lip color complementing liner. Not a big gloss fan? Reach for Merit’s satiny lipstick for sheer, buildable color no matter the occasion.

Adaptable Color

We’ve quickly become huge blush enthusiasts, from viral TikTok picks to the best cream formulas. Either way, blendable blushes, and multipurpose color pigments allow you to customize your glow and place colors wherever you want. Versatility is key on any kind of vacation. Tap Merit’s creamy tint across the eyes, lips, and cheeks for a skin-like wash of color. Prefer a liquid formula? Saie’s water-based Dew Blush creates a natural tint after just one dot from its doe foot applicator—blended with one of the previously mentioned makeup tools.

Brows say a lot about a person, so think ahead to perfecting yours when you’re packing for travel . Draw realistic brow hairs in sparse areas with makeup pro Dani Kimiko Vincent ’s ultra-fine pencil, or comb hairs in place with a brow gel like Ilia’s to volumize and thicken with flexible hold.

Glam Optional

Maybe your travels are for a wedding or gala that requires full glam, or maybe you’re not quite sure what your itinerary entails. Nevertheless, a few products specific for camera-ready, longwear glam is essential. Think false lashes to amp up the drama; with this Velour Lashes kit, you have everything you need to apply natural-looking lashes on the go without trimming or measuring. Finally, the last thing you want during full glam is an unnecessary bout of shine. Stop oil in its tracks with Tatcha’s blotting papers without budging your look—housed in packaging small enough to fit in your party handbag or clutch .

15 Game-Changing Beauty Essentials

The makeup, skincare, and hair products you should always, always pack in your carry-on for travel.

beauty essentials

When the  COVID-19 pandemic  first kicked into gear, I was determined not to leave New York City. I wanted to stick around to be close to my friends, my roommate's cat, and all my favorite restaurants. But when I got a panicked call from my mom on the same day that I was given notice to work from home, I decided it was time to pack up and head to San Francisco, my hometown. I thought that I would be home for only a few weeks; I packed just one carry-on bag with the belief that I'd be back in New York in no time.

Now I find myself (in my parent's kitchen) with a rotating set of six wardrobe pieces and only a fraction of my 3.4-ounce carry-on-approved beauty necessities. Thankfully, the few products I packed are the best of the best. Scroll on to find out the products that make up my quarantine beauty essentials—ones that you, too, can buy and take everywhere with you (when we can travel again).

beauty essentials

Any time I travel, I try to pack makeup items that have multiple purposes and don't require tools. This cream blush is the perfect shade for a pale lady like myself, plus it looks great swept across the eyelids, too. I blend this along my cheekbones for an innocent flushed look.

beauty essentials

This product was given to me the last week I was in New York, and after using it for a few days I knew I wouldn't go anywhere without it. It has the consistency of a pore-blurring cream that leaves the skin feeling satin-y. But it does even more: When I wear it, it looks like I just stepped out of a campaign for perfect skin—healthy, not oily, and thoroughly moisturized.

beauty essentials

Taking this serum with me was both a blessing and a curse. It's so damn effective, but every time I use it, it hurts me a little to know that I'm running out. It's incredibly hydrating and packs a powerful glow. I also brought their Clarifying Serum ($250), so I've been alternating between the two.

beauty essentials

This is the only hair product I brought cross-country, and I'm so glad I did. It's a perfect post-blow-dry serum that helps my mistreated ends and makes my hair look shiny and clean.

beauty essentials

This is the best liquid liner I've ever used—and that's saying a lot for me, considering I've tried about 90 percent of the liquid liners on the market. Though I'll admit that I haven't been wearing eye makeup too often in quarantine, sometimes a little cat flick makes my day.

beauty essentials

I brought this product to California mainly because I desperately needed it on the plane. It's an intense hydrating mask that's subtle enough to be able to slather in in front of a bunch of paranoid airline passengers. Now that its primary use has been served, I'm throwing it on every few nights just because.

beauty essentials

If there was one makeup product I could never give up, it would be clear brow gel. There are a thousand brow gels on the market, but this is the one that truly does what I want. It holds without being sticky or flakey, and doesn't come off until I want it to.

beauty essentials

I had a sample of this moisturizer that I brought to California, but I knew it wasn't going to last. It's the perfect rich texture that I look for in face creams, even though I used it all up weeks ago. In it's absence, I've been using the Dr. Loretta Firming Moisturizer ($70) and the Augustinus Bader Rich Cream ($265).

beauty essentials

This perfume was a gift from my boyfriend's mom (I love you, Elaine!) and there was no way I was going to leave it behind in NYC. It's the perfect mix of sweet and tangy, and there's not a thing I don't love about it. Between this and my sample of Diptyque Eau de Minthe ($180) I'm not worried about becoming stinky over quarantine.

beauty essentials

These days, I haven't been filling in my brows too much, but I do like having the option. For me, this product is a 3-in-1: it's an eyebrow pencil, eyebrow brush, and an eyeliner if you're brave. I love lightly drawing this on my bottom lash line to give the impression that my lashes are super thick.

beauty essentials

I've tried a few face oils over the years, but I keep coming back to this one. I don't wear it religiously, but if I'm having an extra-dry day, I know this is waiting in my cabinet to fix me right up with a glow that can't be replicated.

beauty essentials

I'm not exactly a loyalist when it comes to mascara, but when it came to packing, this was the only mascara I didn't want to part ways with. Although it spends more time in my purse than on my eyes, I like knowing that I have the option of wearing dramatic lashes whenever I please.

beauty essentials

I was not a fan of eye creams before this one. I threw it on one day because my eyelids were scaly and dry after some misused product on my part (note: retinol should not be placed on eyelids), and it worked. I refuse to go anywhere without it now. It's an essential part of my routine.

beauty essentials

I am incapable of getting out of the shower and not immediately slathering lotion on my legs. This R+Co cream is heavy enough to combat scaly skin, but it soaks in smoothly and leaves behind velvety-feeling legs.

beauty essentials

I really, really tried to use a different concealer! But I can't let this one go. The lightest shade in the range suits me perfectly, and it never gets patchy or dry throughout the day. I mainly use it as a spot corrector, but every now and then I'll upgrade my under-eyes.

TSA-friendly favorites that fit nicely in your carry-on

(That list encompasses cleansers, facial mists, shampoos, foundations, and more.) And in addition to pint-size liquids, packing a bevy of mini beauty tools for your on-the-go routine makes it easy to stay glam while you’re away from home.

beauty travel essentials carry on

Whether you’re carry-on for life or have zero shame about checking a bag, traveling means making some tough beauty cuts. Be it for TSA requirements, limited real estate, or the pursuit of a more simplified routine, everyday beauty staples aren’t always practical for on-the-go use. (My favorite foundation, for example, is tragically packaged in a delicate glass bottle.) In lieu of our day-to-day favorites, Byrdie editors opt for multipurpose products, stick formulas, and luxurious hydrators when we’re traveling for work or pleasure. Discover our favorites ahead, from multiuse sticks to acne-fighting mists.

Hallie Gould, editor in chief

There's nothing like getting off a plane and beelining for the bathroom to give your skin a good, deep clean. Airplane air really makes my skin so, so sad. Sturm's Enzyme Cleanser is my must-have for travel because it allows for a little grit and gentle exfoliation when my face needs it most. When mixed with water, the fine-powder transforms into a super soft, enzyme-filled foam (there's some vitamin C in there too). It sloughs off dead and dry skin, free radicals like pollution and other grime from the travel day, and leaves your skin feeling incredibly soft, fresh, and reset. I focus a massage along my nose and chin (where I have the most congestion) and it's a godsend on blackheads.

When I travel, I need a good silk scrunchie. It's an easy, cute way to slick back wet hair when I don't have much time to get ready, it allows me to (secretly mask all day), and it keeps my hair out of my face as I'm getting dressed and applying makeup. Overall, it's both incredibly practical and beautiful in equal measure. This one from Ceremonia is my absolute favorite (the silk scrunchie comes in a set with an organza option as well, which I love for added fanciness). It's the biggest, the most luscious, and really makes me look like I have my life together.

I am absolutely in love with this product. To put it into context, the formula went viral on TikTok before it even launched. This is a true skincare-makeup hybrid. Upon first application, my skin looked warm and sculpted . I use it to contour and lift (along my cheekbones and jaw bone) and then apply to the eyes for depth. It's a beautiful, bronze-y formula and also includes centella asiatica (my favorite for its soothing properties), niacinamide, and hyaluronic acid.

Star Donaldson, associate social media director

It can be difficult for me to doze off on plane rides, so I make sure to save these Self-Heating Warm Compresses for every flight. I got introduced to them because they soothed my eyes and sensitivity to light when I had a migraine. But now, migraine or not, bringing them with me on plane rides is a total game changer. The compress is more of an eye mask that comfortably goes over your ears and stays in place during a nap. They also heat up quickly and stay warm for around 30 minutes, which is more than enough time for me to be lulled to sleep.

If there’s only time to do one minute of makeup before boarding a flight, I’m grabbing this brow gel. Espressoh’s Hey Broh gel makes me feel put together with a few swipes. I’ve loved this brow gel for years to help me achieve a bold laminated effect, but it works just as well to slick my brows into place and keep them there for a natural yet polished look.

I have a ton of hair, and when I’m traveling, all I want to do is put it up. I’ve been reliant on these Large Slipsilk Scrunchies for years and I use them at least once a day no matter what. They are large enough that I can wrap the scrunchie around my hair twice but elastic enough that they’ll hold my hair in place with just one loop. Besides wearing my hair in an updo, I love using them to pineapple my hair at night under my bonnet to ensure my curls don’t get frizzy. Most importantly, opting for a scrunchie that doesn’t get caught on my curly 3C/4A hair or crease it has really decreased the amount of breakage and shedding I see.

Holly Rhue, associate editorial director

Brow products are something I use every single day. My routine typically consists of some kind of pigment product topped with a clear wax to hold my brows into a brushed-up position. But when I’m traveling, I love to go for the two-in-one with this new Benefit gel. It gives you all the pigment of a tinted brow gel, plus the sculpting, stay-all-day power of a gel or wax. It’s a nonnegotiable in my dopp kit.

I’m a terrible sleeper as is, so throw a plane ride, road trip, or time change into the mix, and my under-eyes are shot. So naturally, I never travel without eye gels. And while I love a heavily saturated, jelly-textured patch for my day-to-day, these SkinMedica gels are perfect for travel. They come individually wrapped with one set of patches per sachet, so there’s no dealing with heavy jars or tins. They’re also incredibly moisturizing without being soaking wet—you can easily use them on a plane or long car ride without dripping serum all over the place. That, and they actually adhere to your skin until you’re ready to remove them.

I’m nothing if not practical, so I’m never without this Vaseline stick on a trip. My skin gets extremely dry on flights , and I’ll use this handy stick for slugging pretty much anywhere—cuticles, under-eyes, mouth corners, you name it. I also use it as a lip balm, to slick back my hair, and as a body highlighter on my shoulders and collarbone. (It also comes in handy if you find a blister forming on your skin.) There are truly endless uses for Vaseline , and the stick design makes it easier to keep skin balanced and glowy while traveling.

Olivia Hancock, beauty editor

Topicals Slick Salve Glossy Lip Balm ($16): Topicals’ latest launch—the Slick Salve Glossy Lip Balm—has quickly become a beauty essential that goes everywhere with me. The minty lip treatment is infused with peptides and a tri-ceramide complex that combats fine lines, texture, and dryness. When I swipe this on, my lips feel incredibly soothed and moisturized. Not to mention that they’re left with a high-shine, glossy finish.

Biossance Squalane + Ectoin Overnight Rescue ($68): Since I have dry skin, I incorporate intensely nourishing moisturizers into my morning and evening routines. Right now, the Biossance Squalane + Ectoin Overnight Rescue Deep Repair Treatment is the nighttime cream that’s always stashed in my dopp kit. The ultra-rich cream is formulated with ectoin to protect your skin from environmental aggressors, restoring magnesium and peptides, and hydrating squalane. After slathering this on at night, I wake up with skin that is noticeably plumper and more moisturized.

When traveling, I always want to bring products that make removing makeup and refreshing my skin a breeze. That’s why the mini version of Garnier’s SkinActive Micellar Cleansing Water is a staple in my toiletry bag. When I’m ready to wash my face, I saturate one of my SkinActive Micellar Cleansing Eco Pads ($12) and gently wipe it across my face, eyes, and lips. The beloved no-rinse micellar water effortlessly breaks down and removes all my makeup without leaving my skin feeling stripped.

I am a blush fiend and usually bring at least three options when I travel (even if it’s just overnight). That being said, this is always one of them. First of all, it’s a no-brainer for packing since it’s so tiny and can easily be applied without a brush. It’s the perfect peachy-pink shade that I can build up as much as I want, and the glowy formula glides on without feeling heavy or greasy. I always keep it in my shoulder bag during a flight since it’s the perfect pick-me-up after travel even if I’m not wearing any other makeup.

I’m very unfussy with my hair and will happily use whatever shampoo and conditioner the hotel has on hand. This, however, is the one thing I can’t go without. A pump or two on wet or dry hair is all I need for smooth, frizz-free hair that looks and smells incredible. Most importantly, it helps coax my nearly wavy hair into a passable mermaid texture that eliminates the need for any other styling.

Good complexion products top my packing list, and I haven’t stopped using this concealer since I tested it a few months ago. It’s so creamy and truly foolproof to apply, and the satiny finish looks beautiful on both under-eyes and pimples. It can also be used as a foundation in a pinch, which is great if you’re an overpacker like I am. This is another one I keep on hand as a quick refresh after a flight.

I hate fussing with lots of tools and brushes when I travel, so whenever possible, I only bring one: a beauty sponge. That means sticking to makeup products that blend well with a sponge or fingers. For that reason, I usually travel with a few of the Nudies Cream Blushes from Nudestix ($35)—they come with a little brush but blend well with your fingertips too.

On that no-tools, no-problems note, I’ve been sticking to Ciele Cosmetics’ Tint & Protect SPF 50+ ($44) as my on-the-go base. It’s another product that blends effortlessly, and a little bit goes a long way for coverage. I usually just blend out a few drops with my fingers, and then go over it with a damp sponge to even things out. I also love that it contains SPF 50+; I am a firm believer in never relying on makeup alone for sunscreen, so I do apply some underneath, but as far as I’m concerned, you can never have too much protection.

I can’t possibly discuss my travel routine without shouting out Eadem’s Milk Marvel ($68) . Since it contains vitamin C and niacinamide, it really streamlines my skincare routine; it’s usually the only product I’ll apply between my face wash and sunscreen when I’m out of town. I brought the brand’s Bare-Skin Confidence Mini Travel Set ($45) home for the holidays and am so happy I did; the moisturizer is lightweight and silky, and the cleansing balm is great for days when I went for lighter-coverage makeup or just SPF.

Growing up, it didn’t matter where we stayed or went—I only wanted to know if the hotel had a pool or an ocean nearby. The urge to swim has yet to leave me, meaning my hair ends up a tangled mess by dinnertime on most trips. Ouais Leave In Conditioner has saved me multiple times, helping me tackle the toughest knots pre-shower and protecting my hair from heat post-wash. If I don’t have time for heat styling, I’ll use it to slick back my hair into a flyaway-free low bun. It’s truly the most versatile hair product in my bag.

I swear my skin knows where we are the second I arrive at an airport. Before we even hit the tarmac, I’m battling to keep my skin moisturized, but my lips are the worst offender by far. Since dry, chapped lips are not on the itinerary, I use Ilia’s Lip Wrap Reviving Balm. Formulated with hyaluronic acid and salicornia (aka sea succulent), this lightweight balm restores the skin barrier of your lips over time while imparting a gorgeous, plump shine with just one swipe. Plus, for those with flight anxiety like me, the soothing lavender and chamomile scent provides a bonus dose of calming aromatherapy.

There’s nothing worse than arriving at your destination only to find that the makeup bag you thought you had packed perfectly has eye shadow all over, thanks to a broken powder eye shadow palette. Trust and believe that cream or liquid is the best formulation to bring abroad. I specifically love Rare Beauty’s All of the Above Weightless Eyeshadow Stick, as it’s buildable, blendable, and fadeproof. The shimmery, neutral shades are perfect for every aesthetic, and I love the fact that the packaging has a built-in sharpener.

Jasmine Phillips, social media editor

Edge control is truly the first product I always throw in my carry-on luggage. It keeps my edges laid and tames any flyaways I may have with slick-back styles. I particularly love this product because it can withstand all heat and humidity so I know my edges are laid while I lay on the beach. I don’t have to worry about any white residue or weird stickiness. It’s just a great-smelling product that I keep near and dear at all times.

Tower 28 SOS Rescue Spray is a skin saver at home, so I’m sure to pack it when I’m out of town. It keeps any redness or irritation at bay so my skin can look and feel its best. It’s super refreshing and hydrating, which is perfect after long days of exploring.

I love a two-in-one product just as much as I love anything from Ami Colé. The Lip + Blush Sticks add a nice wash of color to my skin and help me limit the amount of beauty products I need to get my desired look. It contains desert date oil, hibiscus flower extract, and baobab seed oil to hydrate and nurture the skin, so it’s a win-win.

Ali Webb, associate editor

As we all know, airport restrictions on liquids mean that packing a carry-on requires making some hard choices. A good powder makeup product can really change the game, and I’m obsessed with this Charlotte Tilbury palette ($75), which includes two types of highlighters, a bronzer, and a blush all in one place. A few swipes on strategic areas like your cheekbones, Cupid’s bow, and inner corners of your eyes will have you glowing and contoured in no time, and I love how this allows me to keep having fun with makeup without sacrificing valuable liquid real estate.

No matter what beauty products you choose to pack for a trip, sunscreen is an absolute must. I’ve tried my fair share of formulas, and my absolute favorite is Supergoop’s Unseen Sunscreen ($38), which goes on smooth and nongreasy with no white cast, features SPF 40 protection, and creates an ideal base for makeup (so you can leave the primer at home). I usually stock up on the largest size, but the mini is perfect for travel.

At any given time, I have two bottles of Bumble and Bumble Hairdresser’s Invisible Oil Primer ($15): a full size, plus a mini to take with me on all my travels. I've found it to be an ideal hair product to pack because it serves so many purposes: It works as a heat protectant, makes my strands take to styling better, and includes a nourishing six-oil blend that can take the place of other leave-in products when I’m keeping it simple on the go. It’s color-safe and has smoothing properties, plus its UV protection will keep your strands happy and healthy if you’re headed somewhere sunny or spending time outside. This is truly my desert-island hair product.

Your Guide To Packing Your Beauty Essentials In Your Carry-On Next Time You Travel

Packing suitcase

Going on vacation or traveling to a new place can be fun. Traveling is supposed to be exciting, relaxing, and even fulfilling. But sometimes, it can feel like a hassle, especially with all the packing and planning you need to do beforehand. And if you're not checking a bag — which saves money and is a particularly great option for smaller trips — trying to cram all of your outfits, extra shoes, makeup, and skincare into a carry-on can be a struggle. But it's possible to fit your whole life in your carry-on for a trip, including your most-beloved beauty essentials.

Most of these tips revolve around what's allowed in your carry-on, according to the TSA. While your favorite beauty products seem like must-haves, some strategies can either help you narrow down what you need to bring or find alternative products that work just as well and take up less room. So if you're going on a trip soon, whether for work or pleasure, make sure to use these tips to pack your beauty essentials in your carry-on bag.

Think about liquid limits before packing anything

By now, we probably all know the official TSA rule: all liquids in your carry-on or personal item bags must be 3.4 oz or smaller and have to fit in a quart-sized bag. And "liquids" actually include "aerosols, gels, creams and pastes" as well. So that means you have to fit all your shampoos, lotions, creams, and toothpaste in one quart-sized bag. If you're checking a bag, you could always put items that would qualify as liquids in there, but you also want to ensure you have essentials on you in the event your checked bag gets lost.

So, whether you're traveling with only a carry-on or more oversized luggage, odds are you will need to utilize a quart–sized bag with tiny bottles of your products. You can use trial sizes of your essential liquid products or refillable tubes you can fill yourself (more on that later). Even if you're going for a weekend, fitting your haircare products, skincare items, and toiletries into one baggie is daunting. But, again, there are tricks to help you do it.

Look for solid-versions of your favorite products

Before packing all your liquids in your baggie, figure out if any of them have a solid version, as Observer suggested. Many beauty essentials have solid versions, even if it's not the exact item you use. For example, you can use a facial or sensitive skin soap bar in place of your cleanser. Instead of a liquid foundation, look for a stick or mineral foundation. And swap out your sun lotion for a sunscreen stick. This is regardless of whether it is a tropical vacation since you should put sunscreen on daily. Observer recommended soaking pads or cotton rounds in your favorite toner or purchasing pre-made pads.

Many hotels will have shampoo and conditioner for your hair, so if you know your hair is fine with those, forget your shampoo at home. Or you can look into a shampoo bar from LUSH or another brand. If you're a perfume lover, look into perfume wipes or spray specific clothing with your perfume while packing.

However, remember not to change anything, especially your skincare. If you have sensitive skin or know switching to a solid product risks a breakout or could cause your skin harm, don't do it.

You have to stick to essentials

We all love our seven-step skincare routine that we do day and night. But when it comes to traveling, you must get to the bare bones of what is essential to your routine. Hopefully, if you can switch out liquids for solids in your skincare and makeup routine, you won't have to eliminate too much from your regular regimen to create a new travel skincare routine .

But sometimes, sacrifices must be made to fit all your quart-sized baggies and carry-on. So basically, think through your trip and what you absolutely need. For example, in your skincare regimen, you can get away with a cleanser, toner, and moisturizer. If it's a short trip, you might not even need a toner (depending on your skin). All those serums and humectants are fantastic; however, they clutter up your liquids baggie in your carry-on, and you can live without them for a short period. Make sure to bring a moisturizer that does the job well to compensate for those. And for makeup, can you live without lipstick or foundation? You can get away with a more natural look if it's a tropical, beachy vacation. Hair can be trickier since some people need specific products to keep their hair healthy. So if you know you need more in one area, try to skim a bit in others.

Go for reusable, refillable travel containers

As mentioned, you can't pack full-sized liquid products in a carry-on. Only products 3.4 oz or less are allowed, so you must find trial or travel sizes of your items or go the more sustainable route. You don't need to scramble about days before your trip, looking for your go-to shampoo or moisturizer travel sizes. As SELF reported, choosing reusable 3 oz bottles or containers is an excellent option for you to stick to the TSA-approved liquid rule. And it saves you money in the long run. You don't have to buy mini-mes of all your products, and you can pick and choose what you want to bring for each trip and switch it up based on the destination or occasion. Not to mention, you can reuse and refill these handy little bottles for every journey. So you purchase them once, and you're set for quite a while.

The Everygirl also gave a fantastic hack to use contact lens cases to store your makeup. They're flat, tiny, and can come in packs, so you have new containers to choose from without the bulk. These are great for makeup like foundation and lip gloss. This one isn't just for liquids; you can fit powders or other products in these and put them in your makeup or toiletry back, and they take up very little room.

Small palettes are great for creating flawless looks with just a carry on

Speaking of makeup, it's going to be hard somehow to scrape eyeshadow or eyeliner gel into a contacts case, so this is when pre-made travel sizes come in handy. They sell all-in-one makeup pens, such as  Pen Pal by Alleyoop . They look like those multi-color pens from grade school that dispensed a different color based on what side you clicked on. This way, you can have your eyeliner, lip liner, brow liner, and highlighter all in one pen. You can also try to find small travel palettes or cases that hold a small eyeshadow brush, so you don't have to take up room with multiple palettes, brushes, and eyeliner pencils.

Again, you want to utilize all the space you can, so if you can pick one palette or one tool for all the looks you want to do on your trip, that's the best option. SELF also suggested making sure you have a tiny emergency kit, a mini option full of remedies for nail mishaps, sewing issues, and more. It's small but includes anything you need in a beauty emergency. On that note, if you can fit it, having a handy first-aid kit is also always a good choice.

Compartmentalize your carry on

Putting more items in your carry-on might seem counterintuitive to try to fit everything you need in a small suitcase. But using travel or suitcase cubes is a great way to maximize your space, especially when packing for multiple days in one carry-on. If you make compartments using these cubes (or little rectangle fabric bags), you can plan your outfits better and cram in more clothes and beauty products. You can set one compartment for sleepwear and underwear, another for nice outfit items, and another for more casual looks. Rolling each clothing item into each cube gives you more room and makes your carry-on easier to sort through if you need to open it at the airport or when you want to unpack.

Having compartments in your carry-on also allows you to designate a toiletry bag or makeup bag, which you probably should do anyway, to keep things organized and easier to access. If you maximize your space this way, you'll know how many beauty products you can pack and how they'll fit, like Tetris.

Use your personal item if you can

When packing, it can be easy to get bogged down by only having a carry-on and figuring out how to fit everything in it. Even a weekend trip can make your carry-on burst. However, a lot of airlines allow one carry-on and one personal item. The personal item can be any bag or item as long as it fits under the seat in front of you.

With this in mind, and if you're flying with an airline that allows this, it's an excellent idea to use a sturdy backpack as your personal item. This way, you have a place for all your plane essentials like your wallet, phone, tablet, laptop, and books. But you can also use it as another place to pack beauty items. It's sometimes best to put your beauty and toiletry items in your personal item instead. Having them in your backpack makes your liquids baggie more accessible for TSA check. You don't want to open your carry-on up in front of everyone and hold the line up. And when you have all of your makeup, hair care products, and toiletries in your personal item, it frees up space in your carry-on for everything else and gives you easy access on the plane.

Ask for help from your friends

A girls' trip or traveling with a partner is a fun travel opportunity. And these trips — where you have a travel companion — can make packing your beauty essentials easier. The Everygirl recommended "[coordinating] with your travelers," meaning talking to them about what beauty items you're all bringing. Especially if it's an event like a wedding or bachelorette party, you'll have more required beauty products, like curling irons, intensive makeup, or several accessory options. So, if one person has a great hairdryer or a solid curling iron, ask them if you can plan to use it. Or vice versa; if you use the same shampoo or cleanser, ask if you can pack one, and they pack the other, and you both use each others' products.

This method frees up room in your own liquids baggie and carry-on, making getting ready more manageable and fun. If you're traveling with a partner packing way lighter than you are, ask if you can use their extra space for some of your things. Don't expect them to say yes, however, and use the other hacks to work around if you only have your bags to pack in. But everything's better with friends, and if you can help each other maximize your space, it's worth a shot.

Long flight essentials

Carry on essentials for sleeping on long flights

Travel pillow.

For years I refused to use a travel pillow. I would walk past them in airport shops and think they looked bulky, uncomfortable to carry around and they made you look ridiculous when you wear them.

After all I’ve always been able to sleep on planes without one so why bother.

However age catches up with all of us and when I started waking up from sleeping on planes with neck pains I figured it was time to give it a go. I have a Trtl travel pillow and love it.

It’s fairly small so it’s not too inconvenient to carry around, I usually strap it on the outside of my backpack so it doesn’t take up any space at all. It doesn’t look too ridiculous as far as travel pillows go and it’s super comfy, a win all round!

Now whether it’s a long flight, bus, train or car journey I always take it with me, a real carry on essential!

Sleeping mask

If you’re trying to sleep on a plane and it’s not an overnight flight you might struggle with the lights turned on, it’s a good idea to pack a sleeping mask so you can cover your eyes.

Even if it’s an overnight flight and your number insists on having the light turned on you can still be in the dark and get some rest.

Click here to purchase your sleeping mask!

Similarly to the sleeping mask, whether it’s a night or day flight it’s always good to pack ear-plugs to help you sleep. You don’t want to find yourself next to a crying baby that will keep you awake for the whole flight.

A pair of socks

If you’re anything like me one of the first things you do when you get on a plane is removing your shoes. After all if I’m going to be sat there for hours, I want to be comfortable.

Especially if the seats next to me are free and I’m going to lie down to sleep, I don’t want to put my shoes on the seat.

However it’s also very inconvenient trying to shuffle your shoes back on in the dark whenever you want to go for a walk or to the toilet.

I always pack a pair of thick socks to wear on the plane so I can be comfortable while sat down and can walk easily around.

Long flight essentials for entertainment

Noise cancelling headphones.

I like bringing my own headphones because let’s be real, the ones they give you on planes are always a bit rubbish.

I’ve also been on long flights where they didn’t provide headphones and my Kindle was out of battery so I found myself having to watch Kong with subtitles.

Let me tell you, despite the best efforts of whoever write subtitles, those explosions and fight scenes are not quite the same without audio.

Bring your own noise cancelling headphones and you’re sure to have your share of movies and music for your next long flight without disturbances!

Long flight essentials to pack in your carry on bag

I love reading. I also love really long descriptive fantasy sagas like Lord of the Rings, which can be fairly inconvenient to take with you travelling if you have the “real book” paper copy.

Hard core book fans will tell you it’s not the same thing, you don’t have the pleasure of flicking the pages, the smell of a new book etcetera etcetera. As someone who can easily get through a book a day, I call bullshit.

Especially if you’re going on a long flight or on a long trip, you don’t want to be taking multiple heavy books with you. I made the switch to Kindle years ago and would never turn back.

The new ones also have an inbuilt light so you don’t even have to turn on the big overhead light during a flight and disturb all your neighbours (top that paper books!) Just remember to download enough books for your flight!

I also found that over the years it has saved me loads of money because there are lots of free books for Kindle, and the Kindle version is always cheaper than its paper equivalent.

Laptop & camera

I always pack my laptop and camera in my carry on, not necessarily because I will use them but more because I don’t want to risk them getting ruined or lost in the hold.

Plus if it’s the end of the trip you can entertain yourself looking back on your photos on your camera or you can do some work on your laptop.

You can also download movies on your laptop if you’re not sure you will like any of the movies in the inflight entertainment.

Health & beauty travel essentials for long flights

Hand sanitiser.

Moving on from essentials to help you sleep and fun essentials, it’s time to look at health and beauty essentials that will ensure you are feeling fabulous when you land at destination.

Number one long flight essential is a good hand sanitiser . With so many people coughing, sneezing, and even just breathing in a contained space for an extended period of time, planes are the perfect gathering location for germs.

Especially if you’re flying with children, you will want to add this to your family flying essentials . If you’re flying with a baby, you will also need an airplane bassinet , but don’t worry, as airlines will usually provide this (just remember to request it beforehand!)

Purchase your hand sanitiser for long flights here!

What to pack in your carry-on for long flights

Lip balm & moisturiser

Planes are not only packed with germs, they’re also incredibly dry. All that aircon might feel nice when you board in a hot country but it will dehydrate you really quickly.

Especially if you’re on a long flight make sure to pack some moisturiser and lip balm to keep your skin and lips hydrated.

Purchase your lip balm and moisturiser for your carry-on here!

Toothbrush & toothpaste

If you’re flying overnight or planning on sleeping on the plane, you should bring a small travel toothbrush and toothpaste with you. You will feel so much better after using it and you will land a fresh and new person.

Long flight essentials

Clear cosmetics case for toiletries

You will want to pack all these toiletry essential in a transparent case, so that when you pass through security at the airport you don’t have to unpack it every time and put the liquids in the transparent plastic bags.

You can get a TSA approved cosmetics case so they don’t have to stop you at security to go through your bag. You can also get tiny 100ml travel bottles to pour your liquids instead of having to buy new ones every time.

Purchase your TSA approved clear cosmetics case here!

Cala Corsara on the island of Spargi in Sardinia, Italy

Cala Corsara on the island of Spargi in Sardinia in August (a bit too many boats!)

Chewing gum

Chewing gum has a double use on flights; it makes your breath smell nicer if you can’t be bothered to get up and brush your teeth after sleeping on a plane, and it also helps with equalizing the pressure and avoids annoying pain in your ears.

First aid kit / essential medicines

Similarly to the laptop and camera, I always pack these in my carry-on not because I think I will need them (I really hope not!) but to avoid the off chance of them getting lost in the hold.

If you are taking any essential medicines you should always keep them in your carry-on, imagine if your luggage is lost and arrives a couple days later, you wouldn’t want to be without your medicines for that long!

Given that the incubation period of some diseases is quite long, you might board a plane feeling fine but suddenly feel unwell during the flight, you’ll be glad to have paracetamol and other basics available immediately.

Other airplane essentials for long flights

Scarf or shawl.

Like I said before, planes always have strong air conditioning turned on. I always take a scarf, shawl or sarong with me to wear around my shoulders or as an additional blanket when I’m cold.

Collapsible water bottle

I know they serve water on planes and you can ask for it whenever you want, but I often find it easier to have my own bottle on me on top of that so I don’t have to disturb anyone during the flight if I’m thirsty.

I like the collapsible ones because once you’re done with it you can fold it over and it doesn’t take up as much space in your carry-on.

Purchase a collapsible water bottle here!

Long flight essentials

Portable power bank

I’ve been on a couple fancy new planes that have a USB port to charge your phone, but most airlines sadly don’t have this feature yet.

After running out of battery on my phone or Kindle at the most inconvenient times I now always take a portable power bank with me on flights.

It doesn’t take up much space and ensures my electronics are always charged when I need them to.

Outfit change

Especially if you’re going to a country with a very different climate from the one you set off from, you might want to keep an outfit change in your carry-on so that you can change into more appropriate clothes even before you land.

If you’re on a long flight chances are you’re going somewhere where you’ll have to fill in a landing card. I like to always carry a pen so I don’t have to ask other people or waiting around at passport control to fill in my details.

Best travel items for long flights

Last but not least, don’t forget to bring some food with you!

Yes airlines will give you food on a plane but it’s usually limited at meal times (eg. on a long overnight flight you usually get dinner and breakfast) but let’s be real, the food is never great or particularly abundant.

Plus even if you do eat everything you might still get hungry in between meals. I always pack some nut or cereal bars with me to keep me going.

The Best Travel-Friendly Beauty Products on Amazon

By AnaMaria Glavan

Best Travel Beauty Products on Amazon a collage of Paula's Choice Youth to the People and K18 products on a red background

All products are independently selected by our editors. If you buy something, we may earn an affiliate commission.

We hate to make assumptions, but we're pretty certain that everyone would agree on these two statements: One, there is nothing better than  going on vacation , and two, there is nothing worse than panicking over fluid ounces at airport security.

In case you're wondering, here's the golden rule: Liquids must be under 3.4 fluid ounces if they're going in your carry-on (in the overhead bin or under the seat in front of you). Anything larger needs to be stored in checked luggage or it will be thrown out at an airport security checkpoint — not ideal if you're not planning to check a bag. So before traipsing through Italy or lounging on a Caribbean beach, you'll need to think about what to bring with you and how you want to pack it.

While some travelers prefer squeezing their favorite products into smaller, reusable silicone tubes, the process can be messy and time-consuming (out of the question for last-minute packers); other travelers rely on amenities provided by the hotel, which can lead to using nondescript body wash that leaves your skin feeling uncomfortably dry. The best solution to avoid both scenarios altogether? Selecting TSA-friendly products that don't surpass the 3.4 fluid ounce limit.

We've rounded up the  best travel beauty products on Amazon  to keep your skin and hair looking, feeling, and smelling their best while far from home. We're talking chemical exfoliants , nourishing cleansing oils,  weightless dry shampoos , and leave-in hair masks that come in teeny-tiny packaging. Plus, what better way to test out products than by trying their smallest bottles before committing to the more expensive full-size?

"Chemical exfoliation" is basically synonymous with Paula's Choice Skin Perfecting 2% BHA Liquid Salicylic Acid Exfoliant, a staple for  tackling fine lines , blackheads, and emerging breakouts. We all know that travel can wreak havoc on your complexion (the change in climate, the understandable ratio of one glass of water to three cocktails — the reasons are endless) but thankfully, this TSA-friendly bottle will keep everything in check.

Getting your greens while vacationing can be a struggle, but thankfully, your complexion won't have to skip out thanks to Youth to the People Superfood Cleanser. This gel formula is chock-full of nutritious, pH-balancing ingredients (like kale, spinach, green tea, alfalfa, and vitamins C, E, and K) that seamlessly remove makeup without stripping your skin of its natural oils.

Alleyoop Dream Team

Bioderma Sensibio Micellar Water seamlessly removes every speck of dirt, oil, and makeup — and that includes stubborn formulas like full-coverage foundation, highly pigmented lipstick, cream contour, and waterproof mascara. Plus, unlike other formulas, this one is non-drying and won't irritate sensitive complexions (or eyes). Be sure to grab the 3.38 fluid-ounce bottle ahead of your next weekend getaway.

Travel almost always leads to dehydrated skin — and  Neutrogena Hydro Boost Hyaluronic Acid Serum proves that not all heroes wear capes. This serum locks in moisture and provides long-lasting hydration, so you won't be desperately digging for moisturizer come the afternoon. It also wears beautifully under makeup and has a lightweight, non-greasy formula that won't require 10 pounds of setting powder to offset an oily T-zone.

The 3-in-1 Alleyoop Dream Team is a fluffy moisturizer, eye cream, and face mask packed into one portable tube. The secret sauce is in its formula, which combines hydration-locking hyaluronic acid,  plant-derived squalane , moisturizing coconut oil, Tahiti-sourced tiare flower extract blend, and nourishing macadamia nut oil. And the best part? The bottle is refillable to help cut down on plastic waste.

These Summer Travel Beauty Products Are Carry-On Friendly

And TSA-approved.

summer travel beauty products

With a job that allows me the privilege of frequent travel, I can say with some confidence that I’m a fairly seasoned flier. I truly have every aspect down to a science, especially packing. In fact, at this point, I’m proud to say I’ve mastered the art of the carry-on-only method. From Tetris-like organizing and space-saving folding techniques to my airtight head-to-toe beauty strategy of TSA-friendly products , I have this process down to a science. As I plan my next getaway to Bali, — my first real vacation in years! — the latter in particular is the least of my worries. In fact, I often keep my go-to jet-setting beauty products stocked, packed, and ready to go at a moment’s notice.

Now, to be clear, just because I’m planning on a smaller scale (3.4 oz is the TSA-approved limit for containers of liquids, gels and aerosols), it doesn’t mean I deny myself the comforts of home. At 37, I’ve developed a consistent and specific beauty routine that I like to stick to no matter where I am in the world, and this includes the formulas and brands I use daily. Because of this, my approach here is to prioritize two things: luxe on-the-go sets and multitasking products.

View on Instagram

Many of the high-end brands I love and use on the regular offer complete travel-sized beauty sets that cater to every step of my skin and hair care routines, without taking up too much space in my carry-on. In the same token, two-in-one products are invaluable, especially when it comes to makeup, to keep things light. Think items like cheek and lip tints, tinted sunscreen as foundation, and eyeshadow palettes that deliver a number of looks (and can double as makeshift eyeliner or contour in a pinch!).

Ahead, I break down the products I’ll have in tow as I hit the road — er, skies — this summer. All the products below are TSA-friendly and poised to make your life and travels as stress-free as possible.

This is the area in which I refuse to cut any corners. My skin health and upkeep is super important to me, especially during summer vacations when things like dry airplane cabins and extra-aggressive UV rays are key factors. First and foremost, I do not play when it comes to SPF, so I always pack multiple options for my face, body, and even lips. With my complexion in particular, I’m a big believer in doubling up and reapplying regularly, so I’ll layer up with tinted and spray formulas throughout the day to keep my mug protected.

As for my regular skin care routine — which always consists of cleanser, serum, eye cream, moisturizer, face oil, and SPF, obviously, during the day — I opt for travel-versions from my go-to brands. I’ve been a big fan of Drunk Elephant’s “Littles” kit, which includes all of the above and a night serum to boot. And Nécessaire also offers its complete Body Ritual in compact versions to keep my body hydrated from head to toe while I’m out and about.

The Littles Kit

In my 20s, I tended to pack just about every item in my makeup arsenal, refusing to travel without high-coverage foundation, concealer, setting powder, and everything else I deemed essential for a fully glam face. These days, I’m much more laid back, and prefer to keep my makeup simple, especially when I’m on an easy breezy tropical vacation. So, I keep my product lineup pretty simplified while traveling, opting for multitasking items like the aforementioned SPF foundation and cheek-and-lip tint combos for a naturally radiant face while out of office. For the occasional nice dinner or night out, I’ll keep a versatile eyeshadow palette handy to kick things up a notch when needed.

SunnyDays SPF 30 Tinted Sunscreen Foundation

In recent years, I’ve fully embraced my natural wavy hair texture, so I stick to the essentials that promote effortless air-dried curls. Hydrating oils and texture-promoting creams and sprays are prioritized in my suitcase.

The only hot tool I’ll typically allow in my carry-on is my blow-dry brush in case I want to switch things up and give my look a little va-va-voom. And if I want a sleek pony or bun, a strong-hold hairspray comes in handy to keep things intact. Of course, I never leave for vacation without dry shampoo — because, well, dry shampoo.

If, like travel reporter Joey Hadden, you suffer from motion sickness, don't forget to pack medicine that'll help.

According to the National Library of Medicine , one in three people experience motion sickness while flying. And Hadden, an experienced travel reporter, will be the first to tell you that it can be brutal.

Hadden's motion-sickness symptoms can disrupt her entire flight experience if she doesn't take certain steps to avoid it. She's found bringing Dramamine on her travels has worked wonders, and it's often the smallest item in her carry-on.

Although you should talk to a healthcare professional before taking it, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention recommends Dramamine, as well as Benadryl , for motion sickness. Just keep in mind that both are also known for causing drowsiness.

Don’t trip – travel season is in full swing so we’re rounding up the go-to carry-on rolling luggage to invest in. From functional finds to fashion-forward designs, these pieces of luggage are the best of the best on the market — for their own unique reasons.

We’ve tried many of the carry-ons by taking them on trips and testing their limits. Even though these are all carry-ons we’ve checked the ones we’ve tried, as sometimes you’re unable to bring them on the plane due to capacity limits. Once baggage is checked, the quality of the suitcase is really tested, as they’re tossed and turned throughout their very own travel journey. Ultimately, we’re looking for luggage that is light enough to carry, durable enough to check over and over again, organized enough for neat packing and has wheels that are high-quality and smooth.

This carry-on is perfect for your next getaway because it also includes extra necessities such as an anti-microbial, silver ion-coated laundry bag and two shoe bags, as well as a vegan leather luggage tag. We’ve tested this carry-on time and time again and love that it doesn’t allow you to overpack due to its compact size. We’ve tried the white colour and though it started really nice, it’s now quite marked up. The bag does come with an eraser sponge that works well on scuffs, but perhaps just invest in a darker colour.

The Runwell Backpack

If you're looking to invest in a bag that can really go the distance, it's gotta be high-quality leather. You can trust that this will hold up, and best of all, it'll only look better as it wears in during all your trips to come.

One shopper says: "I purchased this Runwell backpack in the summer of ‘19 to use as my work bag and waited a few years of daily use to review. I can truly say it’s almost perfect; it looks small on me but that’s my fault for not reading measurements. It easily fits my laptop, plenty of cables, paperwork, gym clothes, a shower bag, and many more random things. The pockets in the interior are great; it’s very functional. Although I do clean/condition it every few months, it’s developed a wonderful patina."

Dimensions: 17" H x 10.38" W x 6" D

Weight: 3.9 lbs

Beis Travel The Expandable Backpack

The Expandable Backpack

With pockets and compartments galore, the Beis backpack has endless room for all your essentials. And once it's all filled up? You can unzip the expandable zipper for even more space! Never thought you'd be so excited about a backpack? We get it.

One reviewer writes: "The expandable feature makes it great for travel but un-expanded, it’s great for work. The pockets are so functional and the extra padded laptop sleeve is great. Also got caught in a rainstorm this week and the inside of the bag stayed perfectly dry!"

Dimensions: 13" x 15" x 5-7"

Weight: 1.67 lbs

Material: 100% recycled poly

Troubadour Aero Backpack

Aero Backpack

Even better: It doubles as a duffle carrier for days when you'd prefer carrying your things as a crossbody.

One shopper says: "Just perfect. Enough pockets in the right place without being annoying or irritating and it looks sooooo good."

Dimensions: 13.4" x 20" x 7.9"

Weight: 2.75 lbs

Material: Recycled polyester fabric, recycled polyester lining, vegan leather trim

Away The Everywhere Zip Backpack

The Everywhere Zip Backpack

Known for the suitcases everybody can't get enough of, Away also offers a range of backpacks that feature the same intelligent designs and user-friendly features. The aptly-named Everywhere knapsack is made with water-resistant nylon and features a wrap-around zipper for extra access in the main compartment.

One shopper writes : "It may be a little much to say this backpack changed my life, but it changed my life.. It's comfortable. It's SO well designed, with a logical place for everything. It holds a LOT. It's stylish and stays upright when you put it down. Most importantly (and the reason I bought it in the first place), I'm no longer sore after walking around and carrying my stuff all day. I may never go back to wearing a shoulder bag again. Worth every penny."

Dimensions : 12" x 5.9" x 17.7"

Weight : 2.45 lbs

Material : Nylon and leather

Paravel Fold-Up Backpack

Fold-Up Backpack

The genius of this backpack? Its compact size can fit a ton without weighing a ton, and when it's not in use, it folds up flat and zips into a space-saving pouch. Bonus: Get yours customized with your initials for a personalized touch.

One shopper says: "I couldn’t believe that a roomy backpack could zip up very easily into a pouch! It is very roomy with several zip up compartments for extra storage. It looks very nice. I am going to Europe and was searching for a lightweight backpack. This is perfect!"

Dimensions: 13" x 16" x 9"

Weight: .63 lbs

Material: Nylon from recycled water bottles

carry on travel backpack tips

A carry-on travel backpack is a great in-flight companion because it's conveniently designed to be super spacious and a hands-free way to carry your belongings.

When shopping for the best option, it's important to choose a bag that can fit underneath the seat in front of you. While sizes vary depending on the airplane, most domestic airlines in the United States require a personal item to be somewhere around 17 inches tall, 13 inches wide, and 8 inches long.

Equally as important: Look for a backpack with functional features, such as organization pockets, full zip openings, a laptop sleeve, and adjustable straps for a comfortable fit.

How to shop for a travel backpack for women:

linebreak woman's day best sports bras for large breasts

Look for the following when shopping for a new travel carry-on backpack:

✔️ Durability: A travel backpack is an investment piece that you'll hopefully get a lot of use out of, so there are several factors to consider before buying. The primary question to ask yourself is how you plan to use it, and whether it's important to buy something that you can use in a variety of settings. To get the most value out of your purchase, we recommend looking for features that offer versatility and durability, such as high-quality, water-resistant material.

✔️ Support and comfort: Additionally, whether or not you have back issues, it's important to consider the level of support a backpack offers. Opting for lightweight packs, with cushioned back panels, and ergonomic straps will protect your shoulders (and will also make for a much more pleasant wearing experience.)

✔️ Style and special features: Lastly, taking into account your personal style and any must-have features will help narrow down the many options available. Take time to think about if the aesthetic is a top priority, or if a different aspect such as organizational capabilities or eco-friendly manufacturing is more important to you. The good news is that if you're really having difficulty deciding, there's always the option to purchase more than one backpack for different occasions.

  • Why is a travel backpack helpful? Rolling luggage certainly makes transporting your heaviest items easier, but it does require the use of one or both hands. Especially if you're traveling lighter, or for transit that occurs after those initial trips to/from the airport, a backpack allows you to move about hands-free, while still carrying more than you could with a smaller bag or purse.
  • What size backpack can I bring on a plane? If you're using the backpack as your primary piece of carry-on luggage, t he maximum dimensions are typically 22 inches long, 14 inches wide and 9 inches high . If you're using it as a personal item stowed under the seat in front of you, it shouldn't exceed 18 inches long, 14 inches wide and 8 inches high.

The best carry-on luggage can easily fit in an airplane's overhead compartment and hold all your travel essentials without giving way. I spoke to Briggs & Riley's CEO Richard Krulik about what makes a good carry-on and listed the best carry-on luggage to buy now. Krulik only provided general shopping guidance, he did not make any product recommendations.

Carry-on luggage buying guide

Spinner wheels: "You want smooth wheels since that makes a huge difference when you're rolling the bag through a very long terminal," says Krulik. 360-degree spinner wheels are the best as they can rotate in any direction and will glide smoothly at the airport or train station.

Additional pockets: "A front pocket is always a real plus on a carry-on because you may want quick access to a magazine or a light jacket," says Krulik. Some carry-ons also have extra back pockets.

Telescopic handle: "You also want a firm solid handle that's not flimsy or wobbly," says Krulik. An adjustable handle is also important as we're all different heights, he adds.

Locks: You must buy a carry-on with built-in locks or lockable ones. TSA-approved locks can help keep your bag safe on the off chance that you need to check it in at the gate. You can also use your carry-on to hold travel documents instead of using the safe in your hotel room.

Durability: Ballistic nylon is the strongest and most long-lasting durable material, according to Krulik. That said, reinforced polyester is also a great option if you're looking for hard-sided luggage says Krulik. Before you shop, also make sure to look at a brand's testing requirements. Brands will usually test the bag's wheels on uneven surfaces to see how they hold up, and check how strong the outer shell is by subjecting the bags to drop tests.

Style: This depends on personal preference. Maybe you want a monogrammed travel suitcase or a bag that stands out from the rest - maybe in a pastel color? You'll want to think of your bag as an accessory, says Krulik. Keep your personal style in mind when you shop.

Size: Every airplane has different carry-on requirements, that said most domestic airlines require that your carry-on be 22 inches x 14 inches x 9 inches in size. International airlines are a bit different, while many follow the same domestic rules, some airlines prefer carry-ons only to be under 22 inches tall. Either way, check your chosen airline's baggage size requirements before purchasing any of the below.

Proxis Global Carry-on Spinner

Samsonite is a brand I swear by, having owned their luggage pretty much my entire adult life. The Proxis is one of their newer collections and a great option if you prefer hard-sided luggage. It has dual spinner wheels for maneuverability, an adjustable aluminum handle and a rugged exterior that won't get bumped or bruised during your travels. It also has a USB port, in case you want to charge any devices and a TSA-approved lock for safety. The interior has mesh pockets for additional storage and cross straps to hold your garments. Since this is a smart suitcase, you may have to remove the installed battery during security check, so keep that extra step in mind.

Dimensions: 22" x 14" x 9"

Best splurge

Briggs & Riley Essential Expandable Carry-On

Briggs & Riley makes some of my favorite carry-ons and I love them for their lifetime warranty - if you break a zip or see a dent in your suitcase, you can send the suitcase to the brand to have it repaired for free. This particular option is available in three colors and can also be monogrammed, making it easy to identify in a sea of similar-looking luggage. It has a TSA-approved lock and features the brand's flagship expandable and compression technology which allows your suitcase to hold more, without increasing its dimensions. The handle is adjustable too, and there is a carry handle on top, on the bottom and on its sides. There is also a built-in garment folder to make packing easier and zipped pockets on the interior for any essentials.

Dimensions: 22 x 14 x 9 - 11.5 in (includes wheels and handles)

Largest carry-on bag

The Carry-On Roller In Text Me Red

This aesthetic carry-on is one of my favorites as it stands out from the other options on this list. It has a durable polycarbonate hard shell build and is available in multiple colors. It has spinner wheels like our other options and also has top and side carry handles. It also has TSA locks and is expandable just in case you need to fit more in. The interior has compression straps to hold your clothes, and also a separate pocket where you can store dirty clothes or undergarments. While it doesn't have an exterior pocket, it does come with an additional small pocket on the interior that is designed to hold any small valuables.

Dimensions: 22.85" x 15.75" x 9.85" (including wheel & handle)

Best water resistant

beauty travel essentials carry on

Terra 45L Carry-On Luggage

This is the best combination of both soft-side and hard-side luggage. It's made from polyester and polycarbonate. It has 360-degree spinner wheels like the other options and also has multiple exterior pockets for any travel documents or essentials. It has a designated laptop compartment, is expandable and also has a water-resistant exterior - perfect for unpredictable weather. The inside has compression straps and mesh pockets for storage. Plus, the product is made from recycled bottles, making this one of the most sustainable items on this list.

Best budget

beauty travel essentials carry on

Wrangler Smart Luggage

This budget-friendly carry-on sets itself apart thanks to its convenient cup holder attached to the bag. It also has multidirectional spinner wheels, top and side handles and is expandable, if needed. It even features a phone holder and also has a USB port option for your devices. The interior has one large zipped pocket and a side with compression straps. It's the most basic interior layout compared to the other options, but at its price, it's still one of the best carry-ons you can buy.

Best carry-on duffel bag

beauty travel essentials carry on

Away The Weekender

Away is another great luggage brand and they make both carry-on suitcases and duffel bags. The Weekender is a great pick for short trips and can hold a 15-inch laptop plus multiple changes of clothes. It has a detachable shoulder strap for comfort and a water-resistant design that's built to last. The interior has mesh pockets and a detachable key clip to help keep your everyday essentials organized. Right now, you can shop it in four colors.

Dimensions: 20.9" x 11.8" x 9.4"

Is hard-side or soft-side luggage better?

Soft-side luggage is less susceptible to getting scratched up, according to Krulik. That said, one isn't really better than the other, it's more a matter of personal preference. Soft-side luggage also has tons of additional front and back pockets for storage, which is not common on hard-side luggage. If you're packing items that are fragile, a hard-side option is better, according to Krulik.

How can I efficiently pack my carry-on?

"One of the things that I think people don't realize is every time you make a fold in your clothes, it's adding bulk to what you're packing," says Krulik. Fold your shirts in half instead of threes, he adds. "Secondly, there's dead space inside those shoes that you're packing." Stuff them with travel shampoo bottles or anything else that fits says Krulik. Finally, if you have an expandable suitcase, make sure you avoid expanding it till the end of your trip. "If I go with a maximum bag that's stuffed to the limits, I have no place to put anything that I might want to buy on the trip."

Yes, You Can Pack for a 2-week Trip in a Single Carry-on — Here’s How I Did It for Vietnam

Plus, the 15 travel essentials I reached for every day.

beauty travel essentials carry on

Travel + Leisure / Marcus Millan

Packing in a single carry-on for a two-week trip is not for the faint of heart — especially when the destination has seven distinct climate regions. That’s exactly the case in Vietnam, where I just traveled more than 1,000 miles from top to bottom, experiencing bustling cities, rice terrace-laced mountains, and white sand beaches, with 50- to 95-degree Fahrenheit days along the way. Even for a travel editor, it was an epic packing challenge — but I’m here to tell you that it is possible .

Here’s the secret: pack versatile pieces from your travel capsule wardrobe that you can mix and match for multiple situations and be willing to wash your clothes in the sink as you go. Above all, let the activities on your itinerary inform your choices (the more practical and minimalist, the better). While most of my trip was low-key — as in I ate at hole-in-the-wall street vendors and got sweaty on five-hour bus transfers to the Mekong Delta — this was not a backpacker trip where I could re-wear the same sweats every day; I stayed in five-star hotels like Travel + Leisure reader-favorite Capella Hanoi and InterContinental Danang and ate at Michelin-starred restaurants like Anan and Koki, too — so I really needed a wardrobe that could cover all of the bases and then some.

Aside from comfortable shoes and a basic black dress that could be dressed up or down, I found that a rain jacket and ripstop joggers were absolute essentials in this country. Whether I was trekking in Sa Pa, beaching it in Phú Quốc, or strolling lantern-lit Hội An, I kept reaching for the same 15 items from my trusty Away Bigger Carry-on — a suitcase that was just large enough to pack it all in. Read on to find out what else I wore on repeat, starting at $13.

Ripstop, Quick-dry Joggers

If you’ve got adventure activities on the itinerary like I did —  kayaking Hạ Long Bay, hiking in Sa Pa, and floating down the Mekong Delta included — you’ll thank yourself for packing durable pants. There are two pairs that I reached for time and again on this trip: my Vuori Ripstop Joggers that were sturdy enough for all-day adventures in the elements, impervious to scratches from brushing up against palm leaves but still seriously lightweight and comfy enough for a flight, with five pockets to boot. I was sold the minute I read this review on Vuori’s site: “I love these pants so much. I have them in three different colors, and I do everything from hiking to ranch work in them. I highly recommend them forever and always.”

The second pair? These quick-drying UPF 50 Baleaf joggers that earned me a compliment from my tour guide in the Mekong Delta — she said they were the perfect lightweight material to wick sweat in the humid, 95-degree Fahrenheit heat. They’ll be my go-to hiking pants for summer.

Comfortable Sneakers

There’s just no getting around the need for comfortable walking shoes on any and every trip. Since my vacation was mostly adventure-based, I opted for classic athletic running shoes that I knew would carry me through any situation. I especially love these Allbirds Wool Runner Mizzles , not just for their super comfy foam footbeds, but also because they have a water-repellent coating that stands up to street puddles in Hanoi, drizzly days at sea in Hạ Long Bay, and in Sa Pa’s soggy rice terraces — and they kept my toes dry (note: they’re not waterproof. It rained so much in Sapa that our tour guide suggested we borrow the hotel’s rain boots on the wettest day of our trek, but for just walking around the mountainside property , these were ideal).

Long Raincoat

The rainy season in northern Vietnam is from July to September, and Sa Pa’s mountains average 137 foggy days per year — so there’s a lot of precipitation to go around. It rained the entire first week of my trip while I visited Hanoi, Sa Pa, and Hạ Long Bay. Sometimes, that’s just how the cookie crumbles, which is why I’m so glad that I packed a raincoat for trekking through the area’s small towns and rice terraces and for drizzly kayaking.

This Amazon one is similar to mine (and only $45!), as is this top-rated REI raincoat that’s a bit more technical. I love that it has a hood and cinches at the waist for a flattering fit but also goes over the butt, so most of you is covered. Even when it wasn’t raining, I used my raincoat as a windbreaker on a chilly day in Ba Na Hills, and to cut the breeze on deck as we cruised Hạ Long Bay. I wore it on the plane to avoid taking up space in my carry-on, and I’m glad I had it to keep me warm in the blasting AC.

Crossbody Belt Bag

If you ask me, a bag that you can access quickly, keeps your valuables close to your chest, and keeps you hands-free is essential for any destination, not just Vietnam. For this trip, I packed my go-to Nomatic RFID-blocking belt bag (which is so sturdy and useful that even my husband always tries to steal it from me). But I also have and love this $38 Lululemon Everywhere Belt Bag , as well as this $13 version from Amazon-loved brand Ododos . What can I say, I find these bags so functional that I have a growing collection of them. And believe me, when you’re haggling at the Hoi An night market for beautiful lanterns and lacquerware, the last thing you want to worry about is searching for your wallet in a backpack, which is better for hiking days when there aren’t so many crowds.

Wide-leg Linen Pants

It wasn’t all rain clouds on this trip, especially once we flew south to Ho Chi Minh City, where we were greeted with 90-degree Fahrenheit heat. I bought these super-soft Tencell lyocell Allison Wide-leg Pants from Marine Layer specifically because they were breezy but also cropped, so I wouldn’t have to worry about getting the bottoms dirty or wet in the city. Plus, black goes with everything and hides stains and wrinkles. Since they were breathable and light as a feather, they kept me cool on sweltering days by the hotel pool. But I found that they were so versatile that I wore them almost every day of the second week, including to the beaches in Da Nang and Phú Quốc. They’re kind of pricey but, in my opinion, well worth the money. For something a little more affordable, I’m also into these linen pants from Quince , which were recommended by a fellow T+L writer who just returned from Southeast Asia.

Basic Cotton Tanks

Arguably the best purchase I made before my trip was this two-pack of tanks, both of which are now a permanent part of my travel capsule wardrobe . I wore them almost every day (don’t worry, I washed them in the sink!) whether it was under a button-down for a little extra insulation on chilly days in Hanoi, over a bathing suit on the beach in Phú Quốc, or as a top in the steamy Mekong Delta when it was so hot that I couldn’t fathom wearing another layer. They have a close ribbed fit, scoop neckline, and most importantly, they’re breathable. Amazon shoppers seem to agree, saying they’ve held up everywhere from the Central American rainforest to Disney World . I also absolutely love the high-neck fit of this one , which I bought to pair with my beach sarong on Phú Quốc Island.

Polarized Sunglasses

In addition to my favorite SPF and a travel-size bug spray with DEET (I prefer non-chemical sprays, but the travel medicine clinic advised me to pack a powerful, effective spray to prevent mosquito-borne diseases), eye protection is essential in Vietnam, and let’s be real, everywhere! I opted for a cheap but still stylish pair like these $15 Sojos sunglasses at Amazon so I wouldn’t feel bad if they fell to the bottom of the Saigon River. Ultimately, they were so sturdy that they made it back home in one piece. Several Amazon shoppers attest that they’re “ perfect for traveling .”

Linen Jumpsuit

Although this was largely an active itinerary, I mixed in a few Michelin-starred restaurants along the way considering they were so affordable here. I’m talking $15-per-person-affordable for multiple courses at Hanoi’s atmospheric teahouse, Tầm Vị. For these special nights out, I wanted to pack something nicer but still breathable for the heat. This is a newer version of the Mango one I bought a few summers ago, but I won’t retire it until it gives up on me. I wore it to Anan in Saigon, and it even matched the walls, painted with tropical leaves, and to a rooftop bar in Ho Chi Minh City, where it popped against the skyscrapers glowing with neon lights.

Quick-dry Black Dress

When you’re in a paddle boat on the Mekong Delta or a walking tour in steamy Saigon and air-conditioning is just a distant memory, you won’t want to wear more clothes than you have to. That’s why I packed this travel writer wardrobe hack : the sporty, quick-dry Columbia Freezer Dress that’s made with cooling technology. It felt light as a feather but still wicked sweat and had UPF 30 sun protection. For breezy days, I layered my oversized white button-down over it. And with the collar, I felt like I could get away with visiting a nice restaurant or museum in it.

Swimsuit and Cover-up

A quick flight from Ho Chi Minh City to Phú Quốc Island put us right on one of the most picturesque beaches that I’ve ever seen. For this part of the itinerary, where we stayed at JW Marriott Phu Quoc , I packed this orange Agua Bendita Lavanda sarong wrap, which has come in handy on all my beach trips from Hawaii to Vietnam — and the color really popped against the white sand. It was a splurge, but I recently came across this dead ringer at Amazon that’s practically a steal since it comes with a bathing suit and matching cover-up for $34. I love sarong-style cover-ups like this because they look elegant enough to wear straight from the beach to a restaurant, as I did at the Long Bar at InterContinental Danang .

Water-resistant Hiking Sandals

Because I didn’t want to ruin my go-to leather Birkenstock sandals, I knew that I needed to buy a water-resistant pair for this trip. So, I became a first-time Teva Original Universal sandals owner, and I’m now fully converted. These were not only super comfy for walking around the beaches and hiking trails, but they also stayed molded to my feet and were easy to spray down when they got sandy or muddy. The rubber EVA soles were supportive and cushy — what more could you ask for in a pair of versatile black sandals?

White Button-down Shirt

I visited more than nine towns in the 1,000-plus miles that I crossed between Hanoi and Ho Chi Minh City, each one widely ranging in temperature. And yet, I wore this shirt at every single stop of the trip. It worked as a temple-appropriate top on a walking tour of Hanoi, as a beach cover-up in Danang, as a layer over my black dress for dinner in Ho Chi Minh City — the list goes on. Amazon shoppers rave about how “ comfortable and versatile ” it is and that it “ travels great ,” too.

Packable Puffer Jacket

Word to the wise: Don’t be like me and underestimate how cold it can be in Hanoi and mountainous regions like Sa Pa and Ba Na Hills. It was spring when I visited, and the lows hovered around 45 to 50 degrees Fahrenheit. I braved it for about a day before I broke down and bought this Ultra-Light Down Jacket from the nearest Uniqlo in Hanoi, and I ended up wearing it all over the temperate northern region. But truthfully, since I got home to Boston, I can’t stop wearing it here either. It packs down into practically nothing and has its own carrying case, so it’s a mainstay in my suitcase now, just in case.

Compression Socks

The flight from Ho Chi Minh City to London Heathrow was 13 hours, the longest flight I’ve been on in a while. Since my legs and feet start to swell on flights like this, I made sure to wear my nylon Comrad Knee-High Compression Socks . I got the recommendation from my sister, who swore by them when she was pregnant. I’m not the only one who thinks that they’re a game-changer for in-flight comfort — this 26-week pregnant traveler , who flew internationally, and this jet-setter, who wore them for 15-plus hours , agree.

Lightweight Mom Jeans

Abercrombie & Fitch

Yes, I am one of those few travelers who still packs jeans on trips because of their versatility — but only if they’re super comfortable and lightweight. I wore this flattering Abercrombie & Fitch High-rise Mom Jean pair way more often than I was expecting on this trip, especially in the north on chilly days. The best part about these on-trend jeans is that they pair with anything in any season, from white sneakers and a chunky sweater to sandals and a tank — that, and the fact that they get plenty of use year-round at home, too.
