About Peter Kay

Last Updated: 14th November 2022

Peter Kay is an English actor, comedy writer and stand-up comedian. He has written, produced and acted in several television and film projects, and authored three books.

Born and brought up in Bolton, Kay studied media performance at the University of Salford. He began working part-time as a stand-up comedian, winning the North West Comedian of the Year award. In 1997 he won Channel 4's So You Think You're Funny contest and the following year was nominated for a Perrier Award for his show at the Edinburgh Fringe Festival. With his public profile raised, in 2000 he co-wrote and starred in That Peter Kay Thing for Channel 4. This resulted in a spin-off sitcom, Peter Kay's Phoenix Nights, which ran for two series from 2001 to 2002 and in turn generated another spin-off, Max and Paddy's Road to Nowhere, in 2004.

In 2005 he recorded a promotional video in which he mimed to Tony Christie's 1971 hit '(Is This the Way to) Amarillo', which was reissued to raise money for Comic Relief: the song reached number 1 in the UK Singles Chart, becoming that year's best-selling single in the UK.

In 2008 Kay co-wrote and starred in Britain's Got the Pop Factor... and Possibly a New Celebrity Jesus Christ Soapstar Superstar Strictly on Ice, a parody of several British reality television shows. As the series' fictional protagonist Geraldine McQueen, he released the single "The Winner's Song", which reached number 2 in the UK singles chart. His 2010-2011 stand-up comedy tour was officially inaugurated into the Guinness World Records as the most successful ever selling over 1.2 million tickets. He co-wrote and starred in Peter Kay's Car Share, a sitcom screened by the BBC for three series from 2015 to 2018. He also starred in the 2015 BBC sitcom Cradle to Grave.

In 2016 Kay won the BAFTA TV Award for Best Male Comedy Performance, the BAFTA TV Award for Best Scripted Comedy and the National Television Award for Best Comedy for ...Car Share. He also received an honorary doctorate from the University of Salford.

Peter Kay has now confirmed he will be touring arenas starting in December 2022, including a monthly residency at The O2 in London. The tour proved so popular he has now announced dates into 2025!

Tickets are available now for shows in Birmingham, Leeds, London, Manchester and Sheffield! If your date isn't available please sign up for ticket alerts as more tickets are likely to be added to the website.

Kay’s upcoming tour will be much smaller overall, however there’s an extra special addition to the schedule, as Kay has now revealed he’ll be doing a monthly residency at London’s O2 Arena. “It’s good to get back to what I love doing best, stand-up comedy, and if there’s ever a time people need a laugh it’s now ,” Kay said. “And with the cost of living at an all-time high, ticket prices are starting from £35 — the same price they were on my previous tour in 2010.” Kay’s Better Late Than Never tour kicks off this December, starting in Manchester before making his way across the UK. Here’s everything you need to know before buying tickets for Kay’s hotly-anticipated comeback.

Peter Kay’s Monthly Residency At London’s O2

When the beloved comedian revealed the dates and locations for his upcoming UK tour, London-based fans were disheartened to have been skipped . But it turns out, Kay had bigger plans in mind for the capital city. During an appearance on The Zoe Ball Breakfast Show, the comedian announced a monthly residency at London’s O2 Arena from Dec. 16, 2022 to Nov. 18, 2023.

“Of course I’m not going to not do London,” he said. With this move, Kay becomes the first artist in history to perform monthly at London’s O2 for a whole year. The artist also expressed gratitude for fans, who welcomed his decade-late tour with warmth: “ Huw Edwards is going to queue up for tickets… Him? I cannot get my head (around) it.”

Where Can I Buy Peter Kay Tickets?

Tickets for Kay’s tour will be very popular, so it’s imperative to act fast. The comedian had planned to do shows in 2018 , but had to cancel due to family matters. However, he briefly appeared at a benefit concert marking the reopening of the Manchester Arena following the terrorist attack in May 2017, in addition to a couple of shows in 2021. Both shows at the Manchester O2 Apollo sold out within 30 minutes , so you better be prepared at 10 a.m. on November 12 when tickets for his upcoming tour go on sale. Tickets will start at £35, the same amount as during Kay’s 2010 tour, and there will be no pre-sale.

Tickets will be available via Ticketmaster UK , Ticketmaster IE , Gigs and Tours , and Kay’s website .

Goodbye for now

That's the end of our coverage for today - thanks for following along. Check back for more updates tomorrow.

More Peter Kay in Manchester

At this rate tickets for Peter Kay are still going to be coming out at midnight. And he's starting to head towards 2026!

The latest date to have been released is almost two-and-half years away. Or in 876 days' time.

At least the new date is a Saturday, so if you fancy a long weekend in the land of the Lancashire hot pot.... then the date with Bolton's finest at Manchester's AO Arena is April 5, 2025.

Makes you wonder how many dates Ticketmaster has got up its sleeve.

What cost of living crisis?

With demand for Peter Kay tickets today reaching unprecedented levels Brummie marathon runner Simon says it looks like people will always pay for something if they really want it.

He tweeted to Peter Kay: "You seem to have proved there’s no cost of living crisis! Millions of people finding money when they want something! Every venue sold out for next 2 years."

Walsall-based Liverpool fan Carl Hooper added: "Got some Peter Kay tickets for the night before my 40th birthday. Waiting all day in a bloody queue and now I can't wait. Roll on April."

But despite her 'Remember Twitter should be fun' motto, city-based jussiewussie sadly admitted defeat in her bid to see a show, tweeting: "I've given up...I'll be an OAP by the time I get tickets."

More dates still being added!

Just when you thought Peter Kay had run out of steam... another new date has popped up - The 02 Arena on Saturday January 25, 2025.

It's going to cost him a few bob to keep travelling around the country like this for two years. and perhaps he'll have to go a day early every time.

Imagine the stress otherwise with train strikes, protesters and whatever else the world throws up in the meantime causing potential delays. There could be everything from storms to, er... power cuts? No, don't even think about it!

David Grainger has got his tickets. but...

All quiet on the Bolton front

No new Peter Kay dates for Birmingham have been announced in the past hour.

Does this mean Bolton's finest has dried up and finally run out of material?

Can everyone go home now? Oooops. They probably are all at home having spent all day indoors on a beautiful Saturday trying to buy tickets to no avail in many cases resulting in a barrage of tweets aimed at Ticket Factory and Ticketmaster .

NIcky Ashley from Lichfield tweeted to Ticket Factory: "Entered payment details then it crashed, now can’t get on it at all, just an error message showing."

John Keller from Luton tweeted to Ticketmaster: "Your site is a joke got through after waiting from 50k tried buying em then threw me back into queue... joke."

NHS worker Iain Milne told Ticketmaster: "Don't think I'll bother. After joining the queue at 09:30 am I find 26000 people ahead of me. Then a ridiculous wait of over 5 hrs only to find there's no tickets available. BUT Surprise Surprise Viagogo has numerous tickets available for ALL dates at obscenely ridiculous prices."

Christopher Reilly told The Ticket Factory: "I have reached the front of the queue 5 times in the last half-hour, told each time there is an 'error' and would I like to rejoin the queue ? Now officiallly giving up and going out shopping..."

Gary added: "Glad I paid £40 for priority so I can sit in a queue that's been paused for an hour. Didn't notice that as one of the setting (selling) points."

'We're big fans but sorry Peter - I have other things to do'

And still the complaints keep coming...

Michelle from Birmingham tweeted to Peter Kay saying: "I’ve been trying all week to get tickets for Birmingham. First 02 priority crashed then I spend 4 hours waiting on ticket factory to get 1st in the queue only for it to kick me off and send me to the back of the queue not once but twice! And still no tickets!! I give up!!"

Sally tweeted: "Peter - we’re big fans - and had two tickets which we were so excited about for your cancelled show a few years back. But I’m sorry I’ve waited for 6 hours.. now to have a rejected queue number when I got to the end of an 85399 queue. Sorry mate but I have other things to do."

Sarah Louise tweeted to Ticket Factory to "Explain how I can wait twice to try and get Peter Kay tickets and twice get rejected! The website flashed up for less than a second and sent me back to queue page and did this about 10 times then threw me out yet again!"

We got through and the option to buy was for 'tickets sold by fans'

After trying all day to try to buy Peter Kay tickets via both The Ticket Factory and Ticketmaster we seem to have got through - but still failed to buy any.

So what looked like a race between Peter The Hare and Kay The Tortoise, judging by the queue lengths at the beginning seems to have been a 'null and void' event.

Having kept watch on Ticket Factory all day, I was distracted by Ticketmaster when the option to go through at the Ticket Factory appeared. Clicking on the Ticket Factory link it simply said: 'Your queue number is no longer valid'. Queue numbers are valid for 20 minutes. Unfortunately, your queue number has now expired. Click the button below to get a new place in the queue'.

The site then said: 'YOU ARE NOW IN THE PETER KAY QUEUE''. Due to demand we may have to pause the queue which is entirely normal, please bear with us, you won't lose your place. We will get things moving shortly'.

So what of Ticketmaster at 3.22pm?

peter kay tour 2023 birmingham

Well, we got through to their site which promised 'limited availability' for Thursday, March 23 at Resorts World Arena, NEC. Every time we tried to select an area to sit, the same message came up: 'Resale Tickets are available for this event. This is a ticket resale service. These are tickets sold by fans and verified by Ticketmaster'.

Back at The Ticket Factory, the site said 'You can close this page without losing your place in the queue'. But it wasn't givng an estimation of how long the queue was in numbers or time, how many tickets were still available, nor that once you got to the front, you would have just 20 minutes to leap into action.... even when you've been staring at a screen all day.

All in all, a day of pure frustration.

A second 2025 date appears

The Better Late Than Never tour has now seen Peter Kay add two more dates to play in Birmingham - in 2025.

The first new date to have been added is on Frday January 24, 2025 at the Utilita Arena in town.

The second is on Friday, February 21, 2025 at the Resorts World Arena, NEC.

The news prompted a tweet from Peter Kay's official Twitter site which says: 'Absolutely blown away by the ticket sales so far, especially as some of the shows aren't for a good while yet but don't worry we'll have a laugh when we're all together. Much love, Peter

PS Matt Hancock IS a proper ****-***.

Recurring theme

One of the recurring themes of today is that people are willing to queue and take their chances in what is effectively a random process. But what is getting their backs up is the process of having to go back to square one again, as if this is some kind of snakes and ladders game. Paul Scragg tweeted: "4 hours 40 mins to get to front of queue, only to be told no tickets, choose another date, then back in another Queue?? 26000 long! Why no option to buy next best in Birmingham?"

More dates, more headaches

And on the better late than never tour goes - now into 2025.

Just when you thought the rush for Peter Kay tickets couldn't get any more bizarre... another date has just been added.

January 24, 2025 - and that's a Friday if it makes any difference.

Latest figures on race for Peter Kay tickets

We are just shy of being the 18,000 in a queue to buy Peter Kay tickets via Ticketmaster.

And over on The Ticket Factory some progress has been made - up to just over 35,000!

It seems to have been such a lovely day outside!

'Five hours wasted' - but solution offered

We are getting to the point in the day where people really are getting fed up - and giving up - in a bid to buy Peter Kay tickets. The idea of having a laugh is wearing thin on those who haven't able to get any.

Lillian tweeted: "I give up! In 6 different cues get to the site to be kicked out waste of 5 hours of my life."

Neil Griffiths called for even more new dates. "Some more dates on top of the additional dates would be appreciated as there are 111,000 people in the queue before me for one of the dates."

Meanwhile. Slab Design Union Ltd offered a solution to the idea of trying to buy Peter Kay tickets, tweeting: "How hard would it be to submit your email and ID into a ballot, then if you’re successful, get an email with an access code to simply log in and buy tickets, instead of this ridiculous charade every time."

'Touts getting richer'

As fans continue to try to get tickets, they are still not happy.

Patrick McCormick tweeted: 'In the queue for 2 and half hours but nothing available at multiple venues, yet resale tickets are already available! This only enriches the touts - very poor!!'

Posting angry faces in the direction of Ticketmaster, Jenny Louise Watson said: ""aited 2.5hrs this morning since Peter Kay tickets going live at 10am, logged on last night as instructed to to secure my place in the queue. Finally get through to purchase my tickets and you’re website crashes and throws me back to 30000 in the queue again!"

Jenny Dalton messaged The Ticket Factory to say: "Thank you Sat for 3 hours today to get a ticket for P eter Kay finally got to the front of the queue and was redirected to book tickets and promptly kicked off the system saying I’d lost my place, told to her to the back of the queue. Now 11000 in line."

Four more Peter Kay dates added in an hour

Trying to buy Peter Kay tickets is one thing, trying to work out just when he's playing is becoming equally mindblowing.

in the past hour, The Ticket Factory has announced the following four extra dates.

Utilita Arena: August 9, 2024 (a Friday) and October 7, 2024 (a Monday) without even saying what day of the week they are.

Just 48 minutes later it then tweeted two more dates at the Utilita Arena - November 15, 2024 (a Friday) and December 6, 2024 (another Friday).

The Ticket Factory tweeted: 'Tickets are still available, thank you for your patience!'

Meanwhile, our attempt to buy Ticket Factory tickets, which began just before 9.30am, remains stuck just below 44,000 with the page seemingly still 'paused'.

The message now says: 'Due to demand we may have to pause the queue which is entirely normal, please bear with us, you won't lose your place. We will get things moving shortly. Tickets are still available via The Ticket Factory for Peter Kay in 2022, 2023 & 2024 at Utilita Arena Birmingham & Resorts World Arena, Birmingham. Please stick around and we'll get you through to the site as soon as possible'.

As for our Ticketmaster page, we are now just below 80,000 in the queue.

Extra shows keep appearing but the Peter Kay ticket mayhem is driving people 'over the edge'

Trying to buy Peter Kay tickets seems to increase people's stress levels beyond breaking point when all they want is a good lauch (of the kind that's freely available by watching clips anyway of Peter Kay on Facebook).

And all the while more dates are being added to add to the confusion. This from Ticketmaster just...

Matt Philips tweeted to Ticketmaster: "How are you adding dates after people who have queued for over an hour have left the queue because no tickets were left for current dates?"

Chris said: "No offence, gigs for 2 years time where most of the material will be all over social media by then, no thanks. The sales process has been a dream for bots.."

Cody tweeted: "In the queue for Peter Kay tickets and being the prized ******* I am left the queue and rejoined. This may tip me over the edge."

KTJ posted: "Should have been priority for everyone that had tickets for his cancelled shows. Hopefully I'm still alive by 2024."

Jade tweeted: "On hold for an hour and 20 mins for accessible Peter Kay tickets to be cut off and told they are sold out."

Nicole fumed: "How’s it this hard to get tickets for Peter Kay Birmingham been queuing since 8am, keep adding extra dates but can’t go back to get them as lose your place in the queue when try change the date."

'Superfan' has hopes dashed at the checkout

Coventry-based security expert Kerry Blakeman has been left outraged after he queued for Peter Kay tickets and though he was about to get his hands on them when...

The website crashed during his checkout process. And Kerry's verdict? "Pointless."

And it seems he's not alone in feeling down!

Daniel B tweeted: "Waiting in a paused queue 1015th on The Ticket Factory… look back 5 minutes later and I’m 29105th. Why can’t ticket selling sites handle the traffic they know they’re going to receive?"

New dates added but place in queue goes back to 134,000

Just when you thought the Peter The Hare with Ticketmaster would win through against Kay The Tortoise with The Ticket Factory...

peter kay tour 2023 birmingham

Having got into the last 10,000 in the hunt for Ticketmaster tickets, its window has suddenly changed. It gave a 'ten minute' buying window which I missed as it came up far more quickly than expected and I was taking a screen break / checking other things. So, did I really get the chance to buy tickets or not? I will never know...

It went back up to 134,000 but after another few minutes is down to 128,000. Is that because people are buying tickets or giving up?

The Tcketmaster site says: "Due to overwhelming demand for this show, ticket availability is now extremely limited, and some ticket options will be unavailable. Good news! More shows have just been added for Birmingham Utilita Arena on Friday, August 9, 2024 and Monday, October 7, 2024.

If the last few years of economic and public health cirumstances are any guide to the future, can anyone really have faith that a gig booked for nearly two years ahead will still go ahead?

Meanwhile, our The Ticket Factory page remains 'paused' just shy of being the 44,000th person in the queue.

The message says: "Due to demand we are having to pause the queue which is entirely normal, please bear with us, you won't use your place. We will get things moving shortly."

Oooops! Man buys 'wrong' Peter Kay tickets

Jason Hardwick has bought tickets for Peter Kay... by mistake. He wanted tickets for Birmingham on December 17, but ended up with seats for August 29, 2023.

Jason has appealed to anyone who knows him to get in touch if they want his 'wrong' tickets at face value. And, you don't know him, he doesn't want to know you.

Furious 'no priority' for ticketholders from 2017 as others 'profit'

Nigel Walters is fuming that peope who had tickets in 2017 have not been given any priority this time.

He tweets: "Given up!! People who had tickets for your last shows should have been given priority!! Not O2. Now people are selling on for £100s!! Disgusting."

Back in 2017, Peter Kay had sold out a 14-month, 100-show tour when he cancelled it due to 'unforeseen family circumstances'.

Nigel makes a good point. But people who bought in 2017 would have faced a similar random element. And imagine the adminstrative chaos of trying to re-engage post Covid.

Nothing easy about buying Peter Kay tickets but in fairness to the Bolton wanderer he appears to be trying to put on as many shows as he can.

Peter Kay will never be unemployed

Liz from Birmingham reckons there would be ticket demand for Peter Kay to fill two decades with shows.

Meanwhile, Emma Gardner reckons that she won't get tickets even though '"there are more tickets on sale than ther are people in the UK."

Instant Peter Kay tickets... for London

Steph from Birmingham looks set to have a big smile on her chops. She claims to have bought Peter Kay tickets with 'no wait'.

And this is her tip.

The race is still on but one entrant doesn't appear to be moving

Meanwhile back in our Peter The Hare versus Kay The Tortoise race...

Our Ticketmaster place is now just below 10,000 having started out at more than 18,000 just prior to them going on sale at 10am and falling to 16,000 by 10.15am.

As for Ticket Factory... the song remains the same.

It says: 'Our page is paused'. And we are still just below 44,000 in this parcicular queue.

Ticketmaster advice to people trying to buy Peter Kay tickets

The company has tweeted: "As expected, Peter Kay is super popular this morning. To make it as fair as possible, we have put everyone in a queue. Be patient and don’t refresh or you’ll lose your place."

Jackie from Birmingham is not happy with what happened to her.

The Ticketmaster statement has prompted a string of other responses. Gary Varley said: "Only 200,000 people in front of me in the queue. Reality I’d probably be stood outside Manchester arena trying to get into Leeds to watch the show."

Emma Squires wrote: "Just wondering how I joined the queue with 11507 people in front of me that then went up to 115363. How did all those people jump the queue?!

To which Adam Crawford replied: "Holly & Phillip strike again."

Scramble for Peter Kay shows is like 'The Purge for tickets'

Peter from Birmingham has referenced the Hollywood horror franchise in which people can commit crimes for a limited period - and get away with it.

"It's causing carnage on a Saturday morning," he tweets.

Ticket Factory queue has been 'paused'

Our place in the Ticket Factory Queue before 9.30 was pushing 45,000. An hour later Ticket Factory says it's just below 44,000.

Then comes the message: 'The queue is paused. Due to demand we are having to pause the queue for a few minutes. You will not lose your place. We will get things moving again shortly.'

Our place in the Ticketmaster queue is now below 14,900.

In a two-horse race, which service is your money on? Of will this be a classic story... like Peter The Hare and verus Kay The Tortoise?

Video of what happened at the end of the Ticketmaster countdown

The Ticket Factory queue for Peter Kay tickets was almost 44,000 long before 9.30.Meanwhile, signing up to Ticketmaster two minutes before tickets went on sale included a countdown clock.

You can see what happened at the end of the countdown on the video here.

The site then revealed there was a queue of more than 18,000. Within 15 minutes the number had fallen to below 16,000.

Perhaps some people who have now got their hands on the prized tickets are laughing. And hopefully keeping them for themselves.

One minute to go...

Peter Kay tickets are set to go on sale at 10am. A minute from now!

45,000 now queuing for Peter Kay tickets

With more than half an hour to go before tickets go on sale for Peter Kay's Better Late Than Never tour at 10am, The Ticket Factory website is now reporting there are almost 45,000 people in the queue.

Heating, eating or... laughing

With the cost of living crising set to bite hard this winter (especially if it's a cold one), Darren Redmond has offered this thought on Twitter.

'I do want to see PK but I also want to put the heating on this winter!'
