Rachel was absolutely incredible, she was extremely knowledgeable and a lot of fun. Highly recommend!

Tripadvisor Reviews

Tyler Marie was our wonderful guide on this small bus tour of NYC. She was upbeat and so knowledgeable and happily answered our questions. Would definitely recommend this 6 hour tour. Frequent stops at highlights broke up the time nicely. We had fewer than 30 people on our bus. Our tour never felt rushed! Great experience.

Google Reviews

Gil was an amazing tour guide. We booked the 6 hour NYC tour and I can not imagine a better way to see all that we saw in half a day. We started in Times Square, we were educated on history and architecture throughout our day. We made stops in Central Park, Rockefeller Center, Madison Square, the 911 Memorial, Ferry to Staten Island w views of The Statue of Liberty, & so much more. Worth every penny!

I just had the time of my life…. OMG what a great choice I made…!!! My wife and my daughter look at me like a hero…. We had a great time, lots of fun and time enough to do everything…!!! Thank you so much “USA Guided Tours NY” for sure you guys will be my next choice again… I would give you 10 stars but google only lets me do 5 but you guys deserve more… Thanks a bunch…!!!

Which New York Bus Tours Are Best?

new york day tours bus

This post reviews and compares the various bus tour options available to you in NYC, including hop-on-hop-off, fully guided, themed, and night tours.

This content written by local tour guides who don't just review but actually lead these bus tours, so we know a thing or two about them.

If you are looking for content written by enormous media companies using AI and favored by Google, then you've come to the wrong place.

If you are like many visitors, you are struggling to decide which of the many bus tour companies to choose, or if to choose one at all.

There are hop-on-hop-off buses, fully-guided bus tours, themed tours, night tours, and the list goes on.

Well, we are here to help make sense of it all.

In this post, we explain the pros and cons of each option and compare the different options.

New-York-Bus-Tours

These are two questions that we locals get asked all of the time, and the following tips come from our own experiences.

And we also got inspiration from the contributions of the roughly 200k members of our popular NYC Travel Tips Facebook group. At the bottom of this you can see what group members thought about bus tours.

Our group consists of locals, like our guides, veteran visitors to NYC and newbies.

There's no need to become a member to read the posts, comments, and recommendations, so check us out once you finish reading this post.

So, without further ado, let's get moving.

NEW YORK HOP ON HOP OFF SIGHTSEEING BUS TOURS

Traditional hop-on-hop-off bus companies provide transport to major sites all over the city, which can be appealing if the New York subway system seems daunting.

Typically guests purchase 1, 2, or 3-day access passes and can then get on/off the bus at any of the company's designated stops at any time, or they get tickets through a tourist pass .

Most multiple-day tickets include more than one route to explore, a free bike rental, and sometimes even a ferry ride to the Statue of Liberty!

Depending on the service you use, tickets might also include admission to more than one museum, popular attractions like the Empire State Building, and freebies at nearby businesses.

Prices for these combination tickets are sometimes too good to pass up.

All offer audio headsets with commentary in multiple languages.

Unfortunately, no hop-on-hop-off company offers live tour guides at this time. For live guides, check out the next section .

The market is very competitive with companies outdoing each other's prices regularly.

NYC Sightseeing Pass

Be sure to check for any deals by clicking the links.

However, no information is provided when you are off the bus, and commentary on board occasionally consists of a recording.

For that reason, these tours are best for those looking for an informational shuttle service between attractions rather than detailed information about the city.

Leave the detailed touring to our pay-what-you-wish walking tours  or our audio tours , many of which start and end near popular bus stops.

Likewise, during the busy season, guests may have to wait for multiple buses to pass through a stop as seat availability is not guaranteed.

Also, keep in mind that though bus tours guarantee easy transportation around the city, they are not always the quickest as all bus tours are subject to NYC traffic!

BIG BUS TOURS

If we were ranking these buses, Big Bus would be at the top of the list.

Big Bus Tours consist of 35+ stops around New York City on 5 routes, including Downtown, Uptown, and Midtown Manhattan routes, Harlem Routes, and one route in Brooklyn ( see map detail ).

You can also download their app, which has maps to help you plan your route.

Guests listen to an audio recording in one of 10 languages while on the bus and they are free to wander around on their own at each stop.

They also offer a  night tour , which is not a hop-on-hop-off tour as well as  combo packages .

All of the Big Bus routes are included for free with the Sightseeing Pass , GoCity Explorer Pass , and the New York Pass .

Big Bus Tours New York

UPDATE: Big Bus has actually added a new feature for kids: Peppa Pig ears!

All children who climb onboard will receive a pair of Peppa Pig ears to wear and an activity sheet.

There is also an audio commentary channel just for kids which focuses on the history of this character and includes music from the latest album.

Big Bus Tickets

Here are just a few of their most popular tickets. Prices are for tickets purchased online. It's slightly more expensive on-site.

All prices below reflect an additional 10% off pricing that you can only get when purchasing tickets directly from the official Big Bus website.

Big Bus also offers even more combinations where you can add on attractions (see below ), which could include access to the Empire State Building,  Madame Tussauds, and much more.

Be sure to read our post comparing all the different tourist pass options in NYC .

Review of Big Bus New York

Big Bus is the best-reviewed hop-on-hop-off bus tour in NYC and the company regards itself as the premium hop-on-hop-off bus service in New York City.

This company sports an overall 4 out of 5-star  rating on TripAdvisor and Get Your Guide. Reading their reviews will help set proper expectations.

Most negative comments focus on the amount of time that it can take to get onto a bus and the audio systems not working properly. Negative reviews are more likely in high seasons.

Even those who didn’t enjoy their experience typically reported that this bus service was worth considering.

TopView NYC

This is a relatively new company offering hop-on-hop-off bus tours, but they’re giving the competition a run for their money.

Not only are their prices much cheaper, but they also offer a lot of additional activities and attractions for free with each ticket.

In addition to their main Downtown tour, they also provide hop-on-hop-off routes of Uptown & Harlem, Brooklyn, and even a Night tour.

Depending on which ticket option you choose, you can also get access to a Statue of Liberty Cruise, a Central Park Bike Rental, and the Museum of the City of New York.

This hop-on-hop-off bus tour ticket can be used at any time within 6 months of the original purchase date.

That means you are free to buy tickets when they are on sale and wait until you plan to visit NYC to use them.

Reviews of TopView NYC

Ratings for this company have suffered in recent years.

While some of this might be due to issues that all companies had during the pandemic, there is no mistaking the fact that their reviews are not very good anymore.

TopView has an overall rating of 3 out of 5 stars , and most guests feel that they don't provide accurate instructions on how to use their service.

Whatever is going on behind the scenes, one thing is for sure: many reviewers are displeased with this company.

Their prices might be some of the lowest in NYC, but sometimes when it seems too good to be true, it actually is.

CITYSIGHTSEEING NYC BUS TOURS

NOTE: Big Bus has officially taken over every aspect of operation for City Sightseeing in New York City, so this service is no longer available.

The following information is kept here only for those who have not yet been informed of this change.

CitySightseeing NYC offers a similar open-top, double-decker hop-on-hop-off service as Big Bus.

Brooklyn Bus tour City Sightseeing

Like Big Bus, CitySightseeing is a global company and you most likely have seen their red double-decker buses in other cities.

Reviews of CitySightseeing NYC

When it comes to their hop-on-hop-off service, the reviews are mixed.

CitySightseeing has earned an overall rating of 3 ½ out of 5 stars.

As with most bus services in New York, the negative comments focused mostly on long wait times and audio systems not working properly.

Those who were pleased with their experience reported that the bus drivers/guides were both helpful and knowledgeable.

( NOTE - there are no longer live tour guides).

Previous guests have complained about experiencing a lot of pressure to tip the guide/driver at each stop.

So, either be prepared to ignore these pleas or carry $1 bills to distribute at each stop.

NEW YORK CITY HOP ON HOP OFF TOURS COMPARED

If you're having trouble deciding which hop on hop off company to work with and figuring out how much tickets cost, this section will directly compare all the most pertinent details about each service.

As you can see, there are a few main differences you'll want to keep in mind when deciding which service to choose:

  • No matter how you do the math, Big Bus is the bigger name in hop-on hop-off tours, and they do charge a bit more.
  • Although they aren't as popular as Big Bus, they do have 3 day and 5 day tickets, and they also include additional activities that aren't offered by their competitors.
  • If you read the reviews for each service, you'll find a lot more negative experiences being reported about TopView NYC than Big Bus.

HOP ON HOP OFF WITH A TOUR GUIDE

As a company that primarily offers walking tours, we prefer these types of bus tours as they include all the benefits of a bus tour without most of the cons!

The guide accompanies you on and off of the bus at each stop so you get detailed information about all the major sites, rather than just wandering around on your own.

You are also with the same bus, driver, and guide for the entire duration of the tour, so you never have to worry about getting a seat and can enjoy the tour in a more intimate setting.

These are premium tours run in climate-controlled buses, therefore they are more expensive than the traditional hop-on-hop-off variety.

However, you will see a lot more, more in-depth, in a much shorter amount of time.

USA GUIDED TOURS

Visiting New York can be an exciting and bewildering experience.

If you’re looking for a nice overview of the entire city, you might want to consider the NYC Day Bus Tour .

In addition to a fully guided trip throughout the Big Apple, you’ll also enjoy a walking tour and usually a boat cruise (Apr 1 till Dec 31)  around Manhattan.

The full trip will take roughly 5 hours to complete and you will see a lot of significant landmarks along the way.

Your tour guides hop off at each stop to help show you around!

Available daily from 10 AM – 3 PM.

TIP: If you are planning on visiting Washington, DC, you will get 30% off the Discover DC Tour  (normally $69) if you purchase it at the same time as your Discover DC Tour.

You will need to call USA Guided Tours to confirm your NYC tour date.

  • $99 for Adults
  • $89 for Children
  • $10 off for members of the Military
  • Duration: 5 hours
  • More info or to book online .

Reviews for USA Guided Tours NYC

All of the reviews for USA Guided Tours are positive.

With a full 5-star rating on TripAdvisor and Viator, it’s safe to say that this is one of the highest-rated tour companies in NYC.

One happy customer went so far as to exclaim that this is a must for any first-timers in New York. This seems to be a common sentiment, as several visitors left similarly positive comments.

ONBOARD NYC

OnBoard offers day and nighttime tours, including an 8-hour Premium See-It-All Tour, which covers the length of Manhattan and comprises a visit past or to the Statue of Liberty.

  • Cost : $69.99 and up depending on type/length of tour and which day of the week
  • Duration : Tours vary from 3.5-8 hours
  • Tour with Staten Island Ferry Ride
  • Tour with a ticket to the Statue of Liberty
  • Not currently available

Reviews of OnBoard NYC Tours

Some went so far as to indicate that they visited locations you wouldn’t typically see on a tour of New York City.

SPECIALTY AND THEMED BUS TOURS

  • NYC Street Theater
  • Movie and TV Tours
  • Scott's Pizza Tour
  • Hip Hop Tours
  • Kenny Kramer's Seinfeld Tour

The Ride is Broadway on a bus!

A unique experience that, according to their website is "equal parts theatrical show and immersive tour."

It's designed to be fun and entertaining, with street performers scattered throughout the tour route.

The information about the city is rather limited and the route is confined to the area around Times Square, so guests looking for a comprehensive city tour should look at "The Tour" or elsewhere.

Tickets and Reviews of The Ride

This service has received an overall rating of 4 out of 5 stars on TripAdvisor and Get Your Guide ( read the reviews ).

Most guests enjoyed their experience on The Ride, but some have said that the quality of this tour has decreased over time.

It would appear that this trip does not appeal to all audiences, but it’s worth noting that hundreds of customers have left positive feedback about their adventures.

If you’re looking for something a bit different, many passengers have suggested that this is one of the most original and unique bus tours in New York!

  • Price: $79 per person
  • Duration : 75 minutes
  • Free cancellation up to 24 hours before tour time.
  • Purchase tickets here .

TIP: The Ride is free for those who purchase the New York Pass  or  the Explorer Pass .

Read our post comparing NYC tourist passes .

This fun and educational trip is from the same company that brought you The Ride.

The Tour is less about the performance (there are no singers or dancers along the route) than it is about the city itself.

Clocking in at 15 minutes longer than The Ride, this service is more affordable and it covers a slightly larger area.

If all of the above sounds out of your price range, then you could always take advantage of the public bus system and tour around the city on your own!

For under $10, the public bus system offers visitors a great way to explore the city on their own for a minimal cost.

It's also worth noting that most of these attractions are also included alongside the Big Bus tours with the New York Pass , the  New York Sightseeing Pass  or  the Explorer Pass .

There are also small group shuttle bus night tours.

In addition to its highly-rated daily tour, this company also provides one of the longest and most detailed night tours in New York.

TIPS FROM LOCALS AND TRAVELERS

We hope that this post provides you with enough information to decide which, if any, NYC bus tour is right for you.

To help you get a sense from others about the various tours, we've included these opinions and suggestions from members of our popular New York Travel Tips Facebook group.

Here, Lindsey asks the question that anyone considering these tours wants to know.

new york day tours bus

Among those who have taken and enjoyed a bus tour, one of the most common reasons they gave is to become oriented to the city.

new york day tours bus

Rather than hop on and hop off, many people found it helpful to do a full loop first and note what sites you’d like to go back to.

This can be a great way to narrow down your itinerary to only places you know you will like.

These tours are more than just a way to orient yourself, you’ll learn things about NYC as well and see a lot!

new york day tours bus

Plus, on a hop-on hop-off bus tour, you may be pleasantly surprised to discover new places that intrigue you enough to go back and visit them.

new york day tours bus

This group member liked learning about the city’s neighborhoods and then deciding where to go back to.

new york day tours bus

She also loved the fact that the bus gives her feet a rest while she still discovers more of the city.

Like the others, this group member recommends them but feels that the tours are best used as sightseeing tours, rather than a means of getting from attraction to attraction as that can eat into one’s time.

For those who have never done a bus tour, don’t worry as they are pretty easy to use.

For example, Big Bus has an app that shows you in real time where buses are so you know when to be at the stop.

You may have noticed that two members above were able to take the Big Bus tour for free by purchasing a New York Pass. You can read more about this pass here .

As for taking the unusual tour, The Ride, it really depends on what you are looking for.

If you are looking for an informative tour that takes you around the city, The Ride isn't the best choice. That isn't to say you won't enjoy it.

If you want to be entertained in a one-of-a-kind manner, then it could be just what you are looking for, especially after a long day and you want to sit back and relax.

Sex and the City Hotspots Tour

Has there been a better unofficial NYC spokesperson than Carrie Bradshaw herself? This bus tour pays homage to the New York-loving sex columnist by spotlighting all of the hotspots from the original stint of the hit HBO show. (Alas, locations from the  And Just Like That  reboot aren’t featured, so no Che Diaz sightings here!) B oard the bus and get reacquainted with some of your favorite Sex and the City settings, like Steve and Aidan's bar Scout — where you can stop to sip a Cosmo, of course — the Pleasure Chest, where Charlotte bought her 'Rabbit' vibrator, and Carrie’s iconic stoop. Jimmy Choos optional!

5.  Brooklyn, Bronx and Queens Coach Tour

Brooklyn, Bronx and Queens Coach Tour

Manhattan may get a lot of the glory, but this comprehensive tour (it lasts for four-and-a-half hours) takes you through three equally deserving boroughs that made New York, well, New York. Led by a grandmaster —no, not Flash, but similarly legendary emcees like Kurtis Blow, Johnny Famous, Roxanne Shante and Reggie Reg — the excursion starts at the location of the first hip-hop party in Manhattan before heading uptown to iconic spots like the Apollo Theater, the Graffiti Hall of Fame and Yankee Stadium. You’ll get to watch a real b-boy and b-girl dance session, snap photos in front of famous murals dedicated to Big L and Kool Herc, and even learn how to freestyle!

10.  The Sopranos Filming Locations Bus Tour

The Sopranos Filming Locations Bus Tour

First thing’s first: yes, we know that The Sopranos largely takes place in New Jersey. But just like Jersey residents proudly tout “NJ/NYC” in their Instagram bios, we’re going to lovingly co-opt the crime drama as our own. Starting in midtown Manhattan and crossing over into the Garden State, this Jersey-set tour will feature key locations from the Mafia-inspired HBO series, including the diner where Chris was shot, the spot where Big Pussy spoke with the FBI and the booth in Tony’s restaurant where the final episode was filmed. Q: How Does Buffalo Compare With Syracuse, NY?

Both cities offer something a little bit different to travelers, but for those looking for big attractions like Niagara Falls or exploration of the Great Lakes, Buffalo offers a bit more. Syracuse, on the other hand, is a smaller city a few hours east, with better access to the Finger Lakes region and the Capital Region.

Q: How Does Buffalo Compare with Ithaca, NY?

These two cities are incredibly different. Buffalo is a large happening city with hundreds of thousands of residents. That is not the case with Ithaca. Ithaca is a much more quiet and more aesthetic city sitting right on the Finger Lakes of Upstate New York.

Buffalo is a busy place sitting on the doorstep of one of the natural wonders of North America. They are both great destinations, it just depends on what travelers are looking for.

Q: Is There Really Anything Else To See In Buffalo Other Than Niagara Falls

Yes, there is quite a bit to do in Buffalo than just going to see Niagara Falls. In fact, for many who visit the city often, Niagara Falls no longer appears on their itineraries. Buffalo is home to a great food scene, active outdoor events and venues, a bit of theater, and a great deal of passion for their sports. There is so much more to Buffalo than just Niagara Falls .

Internet Has a Field Day Over Justin Timberlake’s Ruined World Tour

in Entertainment , Featured , Movies & TV

Justin Timberlake's mug shot laid over a shot from Trolls World Tour

In the early 1990s, a young boy became a member of Disney’s popular show,  The All-New Mickey Mouse Club . Justin Timberlake had charisma, stage presence, and a great singing voice. On the show, Timberlake also met someone who would become a very close friend, JC Chasez. Timberlake and Chasez were on The All-New Mickey Mouse Club in 1993 and 1994, and just one year later, they would go on to be the two lead singers in one of the biggest bands of the late 90s and early 2000s, *NSYNC.

The New Mickey Mouse Club with members including Justin Timberlake, JC Chasez, Britney Spears, Christina Aguilera, and Ryan Gosling.

In addition to Timberlake and Chasez, the popular boy band was also comprised of Chris Kirkpatrick, Joey Fatone, and Lance Bass. Sadly, *NSYNC broke up in 2002, but Justin Timberlake’s career would turn into a successful solo one. He would also appear in a number of notable movies, including The Social Network  (2010), Bad Teacher  (2011),  Friends With Benefits  (2011), and the wildly popular Trolls franchise .

On June 18, fans were shocked to learn that Timberlake had been arrested in the Hamptons — an affluent area of New York — on suspicion of driving while intoxicated and running a stop sign. While the singer said that he only had one martini before deciding to follow some friends home, his mugshot had people question the validity of that statement. He also reportedly smelled of alcohol and refused to take a breathalyzer test three times.

However, the internet is not on fire because of Timberlake’s arrest but because of his reaction to it. The young Sag Harbor police officer who arrested Timberlake did not know who he was. Timberlake also allegedly complained about his tour being ruined, but the officer did not know what he was talking about.

Shortly after the details surrounding Mr. Timberlake’s DWI arrest were released, the internet was flooded with some truly hilarious memes and reactions .

Others said that they thought the actor was getting what was coming to him . In recent years, Timberlake has been called out for his treatment of Britney Spears after their very public breakup. Timberlake often joked about sexual things he did with Spears while they dated, which she was attacked for and denied.

Some even pointed out what happened between Justin Timberlake and Janet Jackson at the 2004 Super Bowl. The *NSYNC star was singing a duet with the iconic songstress, and at the end, he pulled on her shirt. Jackson’s nipple was exposed, and she hastily covered herself. Ms. Jackson ended up being banned from performing at the Super Bowl in the future, and nothing happened to Timberlake, even though he was the one who exposed her.

It was nearly two decades before Timberlake apologized to Britney Spears and Janet Jackson for what he had done to them.

On June 19, Mr. Timberlake’s lawyer spoke out and said he is looking forward to “vigorously defending” his client against the DWI charge. He said that more will come to light, but he is not sharing anything at this time.

Timberlake recently performed in Chicago and thanked his fans for standing by him. And while his wife, actress Jessica Biel, is also standing by him, she is reportedly very upset and embarrassed by his DWI arrest. The two have been married since 2012 and share two children.

Kindergarten student and his mother were struck, killed by bus while walking to school

MAMARONECK, N.Y. (AP) — A kindergarten student and his mother were struck and killed by a school bus on Thursday while walking to school in suburban New York, authorities said.

The crash happened just after 8:30 a.m. in the village of Mamaroneck in Westchester County.

The 6-year-old boy and his 43-year-old mother were walking about half a block from Mamaroneck Avenue Elementary School when they were hit by a yellow minibus carrying several students and an aide.

Police say a group of parents and students were crossing the street at the crosswalk with the walk sign on as the bus was turning left on Mamaroneck Avenue with a green light.

The child was killed, and the mother was taken to a hospital for treatment, where she succumbed to her injuries, according to police.

Investigators said the bus driver, identified by police only as a 68-year-old from Mt. Vernon, is not facing charges at this time as the incident appears to be a “tragic accident.”

Police have also not identified the victims other than to say they are Mamaroneck residents.

Officials with the Mamaroneck Union Free School District said counseling would be available at the school on Friday.

“There is nothing more difficult for a community to experience than the loss of life, and we know that everyone in the Mamaroneck and Larchmont communities is heartbroken by this news,” the school district officials said in a statement.

The Journal News reports  that a Royal Coach Lines minibus was parked at the crash site about half a block from the school with a yellow backpack about 20 feet (6 meters) behind it. The bus was later towed, and the backpack was removed and put in a police vehicle.

Royal Coach Lines, a regional school bus contractor, has not responded to an email seeking comment on the crash.

Justin Timberlake arrested on DWI charge in Hamptons, told police 'I had one martini'

SAG HARBOR, N.Y. — Justin Timberlake claimed he had just "one martini" before he was pulled over, failed field sobriety tests and was arrested on suspicion of intoxicated driving early Tuesday in the affluent Hamptons area of Long Island, police said.

Timberlake — identified as a 43-year-old Franklin, Tennessee, resident in the criminal complaint — was arraigned and released without having to post bail about nine hours after he was arrested, police said.

He pleaded not guilty and was ordered to appear in court July 26, officials said.

His attorney, Edward Burke Jr., said in a statement Wednesday: "I look forward to vigorously defending Mr. Timberlake on these allegations. I will have a lot to say at the appropriate time but am currently awaiting full discovery from the District Attorney’s office."

Timberlake was behind the wheel of a gray Florida-registered BMW when he was stopped a little after 12:15 a.m. near Madison Street and Middle Line Highway, initially for driving through a stop sign and failing to stay on the right side of the road, according to the criminal complaint.

dui mugshot

But once police spoke to Timberlake, they said, it was clear he was not in shape to drive, according to the complaint, written by Sag Harbor Village Police Officer Michael Arkinson.

It was "ascertained that the defendant was operating said vehicle in an intoxicated condition in that his eyes were bloodshot and glassy, a strong odor of an alcoholic beverage was emanating from his breath, he was unable to divide attention, he had slowed speech, he was unsteady afoot, and he performed poorly on all standardized field sobriety tests," Arkinson wrote.

Timberlake struggled to walk heel-to-toe and stand on one foot without swaying or using arms to balance, the report said.

The officer quoted Timberlake as saying: "I had one martini and I followed my friends home."

He also declined to be tested for impairment, said police, who alleged he told them, "No, I'm not doing a chemical test."

NBC News legal analyst Danny Cevallos said: "A refusal can be introduced at trial to establish conscious evidence of guilt. It is the predicate for a revocation of driving privileges."

Timberlake had dined at the American Hotel in the Hamptons community of Sag Harbor "and then headed to a friend’s house when he was pulled over by police," a source close to him said.

While the property where the American Hotel now sits can trace its roots back to before 1776, this edition of the inn wasn't restored and opened again until 1972 . It boasts an extensive wine list that includes dozens of four-digit offerings.

Timberlake is set to play in Chicago on Friday and Saturday before he plays Madison Square Garden in New York City next Tuesday and Wednesday.

His "The Forget Tomorrow World Tour" had been in Miami on Saturday and Tampa, Florida, on Friday.

Just a day before he was arrested, Timberlake's wife, actor Jessica Biel, gushed about him as "the rock" of their family, pledging to keep him "eternally grounded and warm."

Biel's loving words are in stark contrast to the backlash Timberlake has faced from fans of former girlfriend Britney Spears.

Timberlake, who rose to fame in the pop group NSYNC, wasn’t portrayed flatteringly in Spears' memoir last year, “ The Woman in Me .” The pair, who met as kids on the set of “The Mickey Mouse Club,”  dated from 1999 to 2002 .

Spears wrote that she had an abortion after she got pregnant by Timberlake, and she accused him of cheating on her “a couple of times.”

In January, Spears apologized on social media for offending anyone with her memoir and complimented Timberlake on his latest single. Days later at a show in New York City, Timberlake kicked off another round of online criticism by saying he’d “like to take this opportunity to apologize — to absolutely f---ing nobody.”

Labour’s magical mystery tour has taken me away to york – but not told me much, it was not-quite-all aboard the labour battle bus this week as the campaign took to york and the high-viz jackets were deployed.

new york day tours bus

Hello and welcome to Election Confidential !

I’m Marie Le Conte and I am writing this on a sunny, sunny roof terrace overlooking the Minster in lovely, lovely York. We really should have June elections more often.

We will get to the reason behind my trip up north in a moment, but to begin with, I must address the elephant in the room. This is a weekly newsletter about the campaign and the campaign this week has been…boring. There’s no other word for it.

About 76,000 polls and MRPs have been released and although they haven’t all been entirely similar, none of them have been particularly surprising.

Had you been knocked on the head on day 1 and woken up yesterday, nothing in the news would have made you drop your marmalade this morning.

Sure, some of the stories about Tories knowingly putting bets on the election date have been eyebrow-raising, but the overall narrative is yet to shift.

There have been no unexpected upsets, and very few twists and turns. It is worth thinking about why that is – in a moment. First…

My day on the Magical Mystery Tour (Bus), by Marie, 32 ½

The one thing they do not tell you about going on a party’s battle bus is that, for “security reasons”, they cannot tell you anything about the battle bus in advance.

Earlier this week, I was offered the chance to follow Labour on the campaign trail on Wednesday and Thursday, and happily agreed. “Where will we be going?”, I asked on Monday, my soul still young and full of hope. No answer.

“Where in the United Kingdom will we be going?”, I asked again, the day before my visit. Instead of an answer, I was told to pick food options for the dinner we would be having in that mystery location.

Using the investigative skills for which I get paid the medium bucks, I googled the menu, and realised that we were going to York . I mentioned it casually, in an email to the press officer, and they refused to acknowledge it.

I booked my train ticket. The next day, an email finally arrived from the Labour party, informing me that I was expected in York. I read it while sitting on a terrace by the river, in York.

Though dinner with the other journalists was pleasant, they informed me that this invitation to join the battle bus was a tad misleading.

There really is a battle bus, full of a rolling cast of candidates and party apparatchiks, but we poxy hacks aren’t allowed on it, and are instead hidden on a separate bus, like old-timey plague victims or unsightly siblings.

So much for my hope of spending the trip hiding at the back, trading Pokemon cards with Louise Haigh .

Still, there was one silver lining; we were told before dinner that our visit in the morning would be a short drive away from the centre of York.

I, a person with often terrible travel sickness and who stupidly agreed to potentially put myself through two hours of non-stop retching down the M1, was delighted. Oh, and the big man himself would be there.

Another pleasant surprise awaited us once we arrived at the housing development in the morning. Due to the nature of the event, journalists were required to wear hi-vis jackets. It is hard to explain why donning PPE makes an assignment that much more fun, but it does.

In retrospect, it is possible that we were given our special little outfits in order to distract us from the fact that we would have to wait, for a long time, in the middle of a construction site. I managed to run away from our minders for a while and go talk to some of the people living in nearby new builds.

The two men I found loitering outside were, it turns out, very pleased with their new home – it’d taken longer than expected to get built but had been “worth the wait”. Disappointingly, the Labour ops team seemed to have done their job well.

A decade or so later, Starmer turned up on the building site, putting us all to shame by wearing a hi-vis jacket and a hard hat.

new york day tours bus

He spoke to some builders, peered inside a freshly built home, then spoke to the media about Labour’s offers on housing , from a ban on no-fault evictions and “rental bidding wars” to “extended protections against damp, mould and cold”.

He also repeated his pledge to build 1.5 million new homes, though took the time to slap down the suggestion, made by a Labour official earlier this week, that the party would “flatten the whole green belt”.

What followed was a media huddle, a tradition beloved by both politicians and hacks. If you have never seen one before, it isn’t unlike those scenes in nature documentaries where penguins all stand very near each other during the Antarctic winter, trying to protect the eggs standing between their feet.

Despite the lobby’s best efforts, Starmer, standing in the middle of it all, managed not to say anything new or terribly interesting. Really, the most compelling part of the event was its location. York Outer, a Tory seat held by Julian Sturdy since 2010, had a majority of 10,000 in 2019. That Labour feels comfortable taking time to campaign there should really worry the government. The lack of gags around the word “sturdy” was, however, a bit of a let down, especially given where we were.

In any case, the journey back was uneventful, and your fearless and surprisingly vomit-free correspondent left the press pack at lunchtime, as they started preparing for the Question Time spin room. She is now eating a BLT and hoping, for the sake of her career, that the people behind Labour’s press operation can enjoy a bit of light ribbing.

Social media, where are you?

There’s something missing from this campaign – can you guess what it is? It took me a while to put my finger on it, but I think I got there the other day: 2024 just isn’t a social media election, for the first time in a long while.

The elections of 2015, 2017 and 2019 were all, in their own way, defined by what happened on social media platforms. There were endless stories about questionable targeting of voters, and online blunders from candidates. Perhaps most importantly, policy issues could emerge out of the ether and dominate the agenda for days at a time.

Fox hunting and trophy hunting are the two most obvious examples coming to mind; they weren’t areas prioritised by any of the major parties, but somehow, ended up organically rising to the surface. People felt strongly about them and the algorithms enabled their fury, eventually forcing politicians to address their concerns.

Reform now level with Tories as poll surge continues

Reform now level with Tories as poll surge continues

There are now less than two weeks left until polling day, and social media is yet to play an important role in the campaign. There are probably a few different reasons for that.

Parts of the internet still felt new and shiny to Westminster dwellers and older voters in 2015. The country felt more divided than ever in 2017 and 2019, and parties were led by more controversial figures.

Keir Starmer and Rishi Sunak are many things, but charismatic, compelling characters they are not. On top of this, Facebook no longer feels like the natural home of newly online boomers, and Twitter is but a shadow of its former self.

Younger people are on TikTok and parties have been attempting to reach them there, but it hardly is treated by anyone as an election battleground.

This may be why everything has felt so slow this week; we’re just over halfway through the campaign and there was always going to be a lull.

Once upon a time, online stories would have filled that space, as nature – and the internet – abhor a vacuum. Instead, we are arguably living through the first post-social media election. Well, that’s my thesis anyway. But back to York…

A quick reality check

Before heading on my jaunt with Labour, I decided to spend some time in York talking to actual, normal people, to see if they were following the election. Using a highly scientific method of “talking to 20 people who I thought felt broadly representative of the population of Britain”, I found that we are, for the most part, talking to ourselves.

My questions to passers-by were simple. Number one: did you, York resident, know that the city would host a Question Time special with all the main party leaders? Number two: are you planning to watch it?

Of my expertly picked panel, 20 per ent of respondents knew that the debate was happening, and 80 per cent did not; 20 per cent said that they were planning to watch it. Perhaps most importantly, an additional 15 per cent of them – three entire people! – said that they would now consider watching it, having been told about it by this very newsletter-writer. If any BBC bigwigs are reading this – you’re very welcome.

Election 2024 Rishi Sunak , Sir Keir Starmer and other party leaders are on the campaign trail, and i ‘s election live blog is the go-to place for everything on the general election . All the main parties have launched their manifestos: read i ‘s breakdown of all the pledges from the Tories , Green Party , Labour , Liberal Democrats and Reform UK . i has urged the parties to commit to its Save Britain’s Rivers manifesto to improve our waterways. The Lib Dems became the first to back the campaign , followed by the Green Party . Keir Starmer called the campaign ‘really important’ but stopped short of throwing full support behind it.
