14 May, 2024 Reliable, good value and friendly. We used Daytrip 4 times during our stay in Mexico and each time we had a hassle free journey. The cars were always well air conditioned and the drivers polite and helpful. The communication every step of the way was clear and precise. They are good value too. We will use Daytrip next time we are abroad.
11 May, 2024 Superb Superb, 2 day trips in southern Spain. Prompt, excellent drivers. On time and exactly as planned. Wonderful trips to Ronda and Almeria, with stops. Will recommend and use again.

9 May, 2024 Dubrovnik to Split with a stop in Bosnia It was great!! Driving through the country really was a wonderful way to see everything. Nikica was kind, efficient, patient, and encouraged us to enjoy the trip and not rush. We have zero complaints and would absolutely book again.

9 May, 2024 We love Daytrip Luis did an excellent job driving us to our destination. We are so happy to have discovered daytrip. We are comfortable knowing we will be picked up on time with a comfortable door to door ride. Only way to go.
8 May, 2024 Wonderful Transfer We had a great time on our Porto to Lisbon transfer. Alex was a great driver and guide. He advised us on timings, things to do in the places we stopped, and was very personable. All while making sure we made it to the airport in time for our flight. We would definitely recommend this service and would be happy to take it again.
30 Apr, 2024 Excellent Excellent experience. Timely, good communication. Drivers were professional and helpful. Good English. Booked 2 separate trips in Switzerland and all went well.

27 Mar, 2024 Great Service! Wonderful service - more flexibility than other options and we were able to see a couple new cities! Our driver, MIhaly, was prompt and friendly. The car was super comfortable and Mihaly provided water as well. Highly recommend!!
26 Mar, 2024 Reliable Top notch service with Sorina! My trip from Paris to Bayeux, via Versailles, with Sorina was amazing. She was constantly in touch with us so finding her was never an issue. She was lovely and we had a wonderful experience I have since recommended Daytrip (and especially Sorina) to a few friends of mine who will be traveling in the coming weeks. Again, thank you for being a dependable company and providing us with an amazing driver like Sorina.
23 Mar, 2024 Great experience My husband & I enjoy self-drive holidays as a couple, but as we are getting on in years, we felt that the stress of getting a car rental in cities we were unfamiliar with, became a hassle. Then we discovered Daytrip and we hv never looked back since. Just recently, we visited Portugal and all our land transportation was taken care of by Daytrip. From Lisbon to Porto to Lamego and back to Porto to catch our flight home, Daytrip provided such efficient & excellent services - their drivers were always on time, so polite & speaks English, knows the area so well that they were also excellent tour guides. The vehicles very clean and almost new. We were constantly updated with details of our upcoming trips, given driver's particulars, vehicle no & type, etc.....what more can we ask for! As tourists in a foreign country...we appreciated this and felt so safe! I have been recommending Daytrip to all my friends back home.
22 Mar, 2024 Ride review Marcos O. was fantastic! Very professional and knowledgeable! He helped with our luggage and ensured that we arrived safely at our destination. Highly recommend!!

20 Mar, 2024 Wonderful solution for hiring a driver for long distance drives This was our first time using Daytrip and it was a great experience. Our driver, Juan, showed up on time and was so friendly and engaging. He spoke English well enough so that we could converse with him as we drove the 3+ hours from Mexico City to San Miguel de Allende. I would recommend using Daytrip to anyone looking to get from one location to another without having to hire a very expensive private car.
16 Feb, 2024 Our first (but not last) trip with Daytrip This was our first time to use the Daytrip service and it absolutely exceeded our expectations! Instead of flying from Malaga Spain to Albufeira Portugal we decided to hire a driver. The cost and time required was about the same but the experience was so much more enjoyable with Daytrip. The booking process was simple and their communication was outstanding. As someone who's flown well over a million miles and has stayed in well over a thousand hotel nights, I truly appreciated how quick, clear and personal their messaging was (if it's AI then that's amazing). We can't say enough about pur driver, João S. He arrived early and messaged us that he was ready whenever we were. He greeted us warmly in excellent English (apparently everyone takes English in Portuguese schools) and even had an umbrella ready to keep us dry! He was very engaging and provided us with tons of great information as this was our first trip to Portugal. His driving was excellent and we always felt safe, even during a short period when there was heavy rain. We stopped for an excellent lunch at a wonderful little beach restaurant and let him order us a delicious traditional Portuguese meal. He dropped us off on time and extremely satisfied that we had made the right decision in picking Daytrip!
16 Feb, 2024 Great service The experience was very good. I am a full time traveler so I was looking for a service just like this. We had a good experience with Slaven our driver and I definitely will be using the company again. The driver came early and helped us with our luggage. The communication with him and the whole team was always very fast and good. There was no good option for us to travel from Italy to Slovenia with all the stuff we have and ski equipment but because of this service we were able to travel to Slovenia in 3 hours with no problem with all our stuff. The communication via email is excellent and they provide alot of information about your trip, you can see your driver’s photo and information, the car and the trip itinerary on your account, so you are uptodate on everything and it goes very smoothly. I definitely recommend them.
12 Feb, 2024 Excellent Service............ Daytrip is very reliable and sends multiple confirmations with very detailed instructions on pickups. Our driver, Patrick, also contacted ahead of pickup to confirm details and was on time picking us up. The vehicle was very clean and comfortable and we were provided bottled water.

11 Feb, 2024 Exceptional Service from Vientiane to Vang Vieng Easy to navigate website. Smooth journey with excellent and courteous driver, clean car. Most impressive of all was the customer service and care both pre and post journey. Would not hesitate to use Daytrip in future, or to highly recommend.
10 Feb, 2024 Excellent ride from Wadi Rum to Amman We were so happy with the service Ibrahim gave us on our drive from Wadi Rum to Amman via Shobak Castle. He arrived early, was friendly and extremely kind and generous, and a very safe driver. We loved our experience with him.

We believe traveling to another city should be more than easy. It should be an experience.
Daytrip was founded in 2015 with a simple goal in mind: to make traveling to another city easy. We know public transport is stressful and time consuming, so we came up with a better option: door-to-door service in a private car. And then we started thinking about what could make a travel day even better?

If you have any questions, here are the answers.
Daytrip is a platform that connects you with local drivers who will transport you door-to-door, from one city to the next. We also give you the opportunity to explore sights/attractions along the way. We drive, you discover.
All Daytrip bookings are one way. If you need a return trip on a different date, simply book this as a separate one-way trip. For a same-day excursion, please request a custom trip . If you plan to stay more than a couple hours, we still recommend booking two one way trips so you're not paying a driver for waiting.
For Daytrip’s private service, you can cancel for a full refund up to 24 hours before departure. For the Daytrip Pool shared shuttle, we offer 3 ticket options when booking: Non-refundable, Flexible with cancellations 24-hours before departure, and Super-flexible with cancellations up to 15-minutes before departure. While you can cancel your booking for a full refund up to 24 hours in advance, changes requested under 36 hours are subject to driver availability, especially in the high season.
Simply choose your origin and destination via our homepage and enter your departure date and time. Browse and add sightseeing stops along the way by following the booking instructions provided on screen. It's a simple, easy, and fun way to book your next adventure! And if you don’t see your desired route on our website, you can request a custom trip . You can even book without knowing your exact pick-up or drop-off address - we let you add these later!
Each passenger is allowed one large bag (29" x 21" x 11" / 74 x 53 x 28 cm) and one small bag (22" x 14" x 9" / 56 x 36 x 23 cm). Luxury sedans can only accommodate 2 large bags. Terms and conditions, cancellations/transfers & travel protection.
We realize that illness and other reasons arise that may make it impossible for you to travel. For this reason, a travel protection policy (which includes cancellation insurance) through a third party is available and it’s highly recommended that you purchase this at the same time you make your initial tour payment. Those who have purchased travel protection and must cancel for a covered reason, will be reimbursed by the travel protection company the balance of any non-refunded funds (minus the travel protection premium). Regardless of the reason, cancellations, credits, and transfers of confirmed bookings result in a costly process of e-mails, letters, phone calls, adjustments, refunds, and penalties/fees assessed by our travel suppliers. Therefore, the below cancellation policies and fees are in place. Note that the below fees are per person and apply if you choose NOT to purchase travel protection or if you cancel for a non-covered reason.

- Refund provisions vary from tour to tour and there are exceptions to the above policy and some tours (including those tours involving theatre tickets or high-security access) may have different or additional restrictions.

21 Terrific Day Trips in Texas
Long vacations and shorter weekend trips are an amazing way to unwind and refresh your life before getting back into the demand of everyday life–but don’t forget to consider delightful day trips in Texas as well.
Although Texas day trips don’t leave you as long to explore, they can serve to give you intermittent breaks from busy work life and recharge your system.
Given the enormous breadth of Texas, there is no shortage of places to visit for a short adventure.
Some links in this post may be affiliate links. If you make a purchase through one of these links, we may earn a small commission at no extra cost to you. Please see our disclosure policy for more detail.
How We Organized These Day Trips in Texas
Of course, the distance that one must travel from one side of the state of Texas to the other doesn’t give us the option of simply listing the great day trips Texas has to offer.
With that in mind, we’ve broken down our outings by the region of the state you’ll start from.
We have divided the areas into West Texas , South Texas , Central Texas , North Texas and given special recognition to the Panhandle region.
So, take a seat and follow along as we make our way through the best day trips in Texas.
The Best North Texas Day Trips
Six flags over texas – arlington.
Two hundred acres of fun rides and entertainment are what Six Flags over Texas offer to those who venture into the park.
Servicing the North Texas area for 60 years, Six Flags Over Texas is a must-visit for a full day of exciting roller coasters, themed shows, and sunshine.
First Monday Trade Days, Canton
Held on the first Monday of each month and having the title as the largest flea market in the world, the legendary Texas swap meet is one of the most popular venues to visit while in North Texas.
While it is perfect for a day trip, the market is large enough to take up several days to see all it has to offer.
Take plenty of spending money and room in your car to carry home all of those must-have items you can’t live without.
Lake Texoma
This lake is so large that they had to name it after two different states!
Lake Texoma is a popular destination in North Texas or Southern Oklahoma, depending on how you look at it.
This lake not only makes for a great outdoor adventure but is the center of entertainment in the area as well.
The shores around Lake Texoma also boast resorts, casinos, fishing charters, and golf, just to name a few items to check off your fun list.
Fort Worth Stockyards
A Texas day trip into Fort Worth for shopping and fun is not complete without stopping by the Fort Worth Stockyards.
Take a trip back in time into the old west when cattle were king, and the stockyards thrived on sale.
Even today, you can witness a cattle drive twice a day at the stockyards and enjoy a gunfight reenacted, just like you might have seen decades ago.
Food, fun, and entertainment are the order of the day at the Fort Worth Stockyards, so be sure to take a classic day trip in Texas to this historical and action-packed venue.
Delightful Day Trips in East Texas
Caddo lake .
A visit to Caddo Lake is a trek into our past.
The waters of the area, created by the great raft of tree debris hundreds of years ago, led to building a habitat for wildlife and humans that has persisted for centuries.
Today, Caddo Lake is perfect for a day visit to take a hike, go for a swim, or hike the wooded trails of the areas.
A visit to Caddo Lake State Park is always a good idea, where you can rent a kayak or a canoe and enjoy paddling under the great cypress trees that line the waters of this great lake.
Texas State Railroad, Palestine
Do you love historic trains? Ever wanted to ride on one?
If so, you can have your chance at the Texas State Railroad in Palestine, Texas.
Here, in the Piney Woods of East Texas, the old steam locomotives still run, and you can be a part of it.
Book an open car, a dome car, or even a caboose for a 2 ½ hour journey through the pines of East Texas.
This day trip is absolutely perfect as an outing for the whole family.
Caddo Mounds State Historic Site
Deep in the East Texas forest, we find the Caddo Mounds State Historic Site.
Located between Crockett and Nacogdoches, Texas, the Caddo Mounds is a place to visit the past.
Set amongst the pines and near the Neches River, the ritual dirt mounds of the site’s namesake were long abandoned when the Caddo people were forced to move east into Louisiana territory.
Amongst the ancient mounds now stands a museum on the history of the Caddo people in the area and their way of life.
Wonderful West Texas Day Trips
Trans-pecos festival of music.
This annual music fest takes place in one of West Texas’ favorite and eclectic towns.
Each year the town of Marfa celebrates the Trans-Pecos Festival of Music.
Although this can go on for more than one day, it also makes for an awesome day trip of live music.
Book a place to stay early, though, because finding a bed in Marfa during the festival can be difficult.
Balmorhea State Park
Part ancient water source and part modern-day swimming pool, Balmorhea State Park is a natural wonder of West Texas.
To cool off from the summer desert heat, take a drive to this spring-fed marvel and take a dip with fish and other wildlife in this crystal clear, cool water.
The park’s green grass around the water hole has plenty of room for a shady picnic when swimming turns to hunger.
Don’t miss out on this big sky country gem when looking for day trips in Texas.
Monahans State Park
If you like the outdoors and don’t mind a bit of sand in your shoes, then Monahans State Park makes for an exciting day trip in Texas.
Monahans is the Texas version of what we think the Sahara looks like with its rolling sand dunes.
Spend the day surfing down the dunes and enjoy a picnic lunch for a break at this unique West Texas state park .
Sonora Caverns
A few miles off of Interstate 10, we find the Sonora Caverns, widely considered one of the most beautiful caves in Texas .
Privately owned, these underground trails have developed over millions of years.
Take a tour through the caverns and see the incredible geology that forms around us through the interaction of rock and water.
Be prepared for total darkness like you’ve never seen before when your guide turns out the lights in a demonstration of total blackness.
After your venture under the earth, take time to browse the large gift shop that certainly has a souvenir for you to take home.
Stunning Day Trips in South Texas
Corpus christi.
What could be better than to visit the statue of the queen of Tejano music? All the fun that surrounds it of course!
Everyday trip to Corpus Christi should add a visit to the statue of Selena (Mirador de la Flor).
That’s only to start the fun. After your statue pilgrimage, enjoy a full day of shopping, eating, and relaxing on one of the many beaches in Corpus Christi .
As the sun goes down, the nightlife begins. Try your dancing skills with the Texas two-step or enjoy some drinks overlooking the water.
Whatever your choice, you’ll find plenty to do on your TX day trip to Corpus Christi.
South Padre Island
Keeping with the ocean vibe, our next day trip is an adventure to South Padre Island .
Although there are several seaside places to visit in the state, South Padre is our version of clear water paradise.
Spend the day at the beach, eating some great seafood, and for a memorable close to the evening, go horseback riding on the beach at sunset.
Cool Texas Day Trips in the Panhandle
Palo duro canyon state park.
The Texas version of the Grand Canyon happens to be located in the panhandle of the state, just outside of Amarillo and not far from Route 66 .
With over 120 miles of area and wilderness, Palo Duro Canyon is one of the absolute best day trips in Texas for those visiting the Panhandle.
Take in one of the many trails for hiking the canyon (especially the hike to the Lighthouse !), or bring your mountain bike for a spin.
Caprock Canyons State Park
When you feel the need to hang out with the state’s wild animals, take a day trip to Caprock Canyons State Park.
One of the park’s main attractions is the bats and bison that make the area their home.
Texas has the world’s largest bat population, and this state park offers the time to spend with them.
The bison, of course, is a throwback to yesteryear when millions of them roamed the plains of Texas and the U.S.
Classic Central Texas Day Trips
Hamilton pool preserve.
One of the most beautiful places to visit in the Hill Country, not to mention one of the most popular day trips in Texas, is the famous Hamilton Pool located in Dripping Springs .
If you’ve never heard of it, it’s a clear water grotto fed by a waterfall from above.
This special place is hidden and only accessible by a short but rocky hike down and into the grotto where its year-round cold waters welcome visitors for a swim.
Be sure to plan ahead and make a reservation before visiting, as the available spots book up weeks in advance.
Fredericksburg
Not too far outside the city of Austin, you’ll find the delightful town of Fredericksburg, Texas.
Fredericksburg is known for its German heritage (and food), its beautiful Hill Country setting, its proximity to Enchanted Rock , and its many, many wineries .
The perfect day trip to Fredericksburg is bound to involve a little bit of everything–be sure to stroll Main Street, pay a visit to a winery, enjoy some German food, and check out the surrounding area.
During bluebonnet season, Willow Loop Road is a must-visit, and for those who want to seek out a Texas legend, nearby Luckenbach is well worth a visit!
Inks Lake State Park
Texas has some of the best state parks in the country, and boy, do we have a ton of them. There are not many areas of the state that don’t offer a park nearby.
For a nice day trip for the family, take a drive to Inks Lake in the Highland Lakes area of the Hill Country.
This lake has clear water and plenty of space for spreading out a picnic.
Try your luck at fishing off one of the lake’s piers, or rent a paddleboat and kayak for a self-guided tour (be sure to seek if you can spot one of the lake’s waterfalls from the water!).
If getting on the water is not your thing, there are plenty of trails to explore around the lake and even a bird blind set up for the bird watchers in your family.
Jacob’s Well
Speaking of cool and clear waters, Jacob’s Well is one of the most popular–and mysterious– swimming holes in Texas .
Located near Wimberley, Texas, the well has been welcoming swimmers to its natural beauty for decades.
Jacob’s Well is an artesian spring that is located in the second-largest submerged cave in Texas.
At 140 feet deep, it’s quite mesmerizing, and plunging into its icy waters is incredibly refreshing on a hot day.
Like several of the most popular day trips in Texas, you’ll need to plan ahead to visit Jacob’s Well: reservations to swim in it during the summer sell out weeks in advance.
If you only want to take a short stroll to admire it from above, though, no reservation is needed.
River Tubing in New Braunfels
Yes, we saved the ultimate in Texas day trip for last.
Although you can make a full weekend out of this summer tradition, for most, a single day is enough to wear even the most adventurous person out.
The Guadalupe River in New Braunfels is home to one of the most fun activities we have in Texas, river-tubing.
River tubing in Texas is quite simple. Rent a tube for you and one for your ice chest full of your favorite beverages and float down the river until the sun bakes you to a crisp (did I mention you need sunscreen)?
And don’t worry about being alone during your float; each day, hundreds of others will be doing the same and enjoying this wonderful river.
If the river itself is not to your liking, visit the Schlitterbahn, a New Braunfels water playground with slides and other fun water adventures.

February 28, 2023 by // by Midwest Explored 2 Comments
Are you looking for the best Ohio day trips?
Then I have got you covered! There are so many fun things to do in Ohio!
This list is full of the best day trips in Ohio, my home state!
I was born and raised in Youngstown, Ohio , so I know firsthand where some of the best places to go in Ohio are.
On this list, you’ll find fun and interesting museums, beautiful state parks, and natural wonders, as well as charming small towns .
No matter what you are interested in, there is an option for fun day trips in Ohio to fit your needs.
So, let’s take a look at the 15 best Ohio day trips, full of hidden gems, small towns, and more!
15 Best Ohio Day Trips (Hidden Gems, Small Towns & More!)
Rock and roll hall of fame museum makes for an awesome ohio day trips activity.
If you are looking for an activity that is unique to Ohio, then consider heading to the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame Museum.
It is one of the most incredible things to do in Ohio because it is the only home of the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame.
The museum is located in downtown Cleveland, right by Lake Erie.
Inside the massive 55,000 square foot building, you’ll find several levels of exhibits dedicated to the history of Rock and Roll.
The I.M. Pei-designed building also houses the offices of the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame and it’s where the artists who are inducted every year are decided on.
You’ll also find souvenir shops and a cafe, which means you can easily spend the entire day exploring this super-unique museum in Ohio.
This is one of the most perfect Ohio day trips for music lovers!
Explore The Ohio Caverns
The Ohio Caverns are definitely one of the best hidden gems of the Midwest .
Visitors have been flocking to these cool underground tunnels almost since they were first discovered between 1897 and 1925.
Now, the caverns are known as ‘America’s Most Colorful Caverns’ and still attract thousands of visitors every year.
Depending on the time of the year, the caverns are open for tours at different times.
There are several different types of tours you can take too.
But no matter when you go, you’re sure to enjoy this fun place to go in Ohio.
Visit Chateau Laroche
When you think of Ohio, castles probably don’t come to mind.
But they should!
Ohio is home to several castles , and one of those is Chateau Laroche.
Chateau Laroche is often called Loveland Castle by locals, simply because you can find it in the town of Loveland, Ohio.
The Chateau is a full-size replica of a European castle and features a mishmash of different architectural styles from different European countries.
You will see influences from English, French, and German architectural styles as well as four turrets, each of which has a different style.
The castle is now a museum, where you can tour the inside as well as the grounds, and learn about its eccentric builder.
Explore The German Village In Columbus
One of the best day trips in Ohio is a day spent in the German Village in Columbus.
The German Village is a charming neighborhood in Columbus.
You’ll find beautiful brick homes and buildings, many originally built in the mid-1800s by the area’s original German immigrants.
It is one of the best places in Columbus to explore one-of-a-kind boutiques, restaurants, and admire the antique architecture.
Just west of the German Village you can also find Columbus’ Brewery District.
The Brewery District was also originally built by the area’s German immigrants and was the hub of the city’s brewing culture.
Even today, it is still one of the best places in Ohio to stroll through.
Amish Country Is A Must For Ohio Day Trips
You can’t visit Ohio and not at least take a detour into Amish Country as it is one of the best Ohio day trips.
Ohio’s Amish Country is located in the east-central area of the state and is easily accessible from most major highways.
While there, you’ll find that there are a lot of unique things to do .
I suggest sampling some authentic Amish food, perusing through the shops and stalls full of Amish-made goods, and taking a scenic drive through the beautiful Amish Country landscape.
Amish Country is also one of the best places in Ohio to drive under one of the famous covered bridges .
The local Amish are very welcoming to visitors, but please be respectful of their lifestyle and religious beliefs.
That includes not photographing them, remembering that they take Sunday as a day of complete rest, and look out for horse-and-buggies while you’re driving.
Check out our list of other festivals and events in Ohio.
Visit The Pro Football Hall Of Fame In Canton
Football fans will love this fun option for day trips in Ohio.
The Pro Football Hall of Fame is located in Canton Ohio.
Inside, you’ll find tons of exhibits all relating to American football.
It’s no surprise that football fans travel from all over the world to spend the day exploring this really unique museum experience.
There are interactive exhibits and fascinating tours that teach you all about the history of football and some of its most iconic players.
You will even find exhibits dedicated to each Pro Football team, so you will be able to admire memorabilia from your favorite team.
Inside the Super Bowl Theater, you’ll also be able to view videos that highlight some of football’s superstars.
Step Into History At The National Underground Rail Road Freedom Center
You can find the National Underground Rail Road Freedom Center in Cincinnati.
It is specifically located along the banks of the Ohio River because the Ohio River used to be a natural divider between ‘free’ and ‘slave’ states.
The ‘free’ states were those above the Ohio River and the ‘slave’ states were those below the Ohio River.
So it was naturally one of the best crossing points for enslaved peoples looking to escape.
Now you can learn about the history of the Underground Rail Road in Ohio at the center.
The center highlights stories of those who helped enslaved peoples escape to Ohio as well as the stories of those who managed to find freedom in Ohio.
It is an incredibly moving museum.
While we believe that slavery ended in America with the end of the Civil War, that is sadly not the case.
Slavery continues to occur every day in the form of human trafficking, even in America.
Alongside the exhibits about the Underground Rail Road, you’ll also find exhibits that highlight and inform visitors about the modern-day slave trade.
Admire The Kelleys Island Glacial Grooves
The Kelleys Island Glacial Grooves are an Ohio natural wonder on Kelleys Island.
It is an island just off the coast of Lake Erie near Sandusky.
Kelleys Island is super tiny and you can only reach it via ferry.
So keep that in mind when you are planning this Ohio day trip adventure.
To get around the island you will need to walk.
There are no cars permitted, but at only four miles by two miles, that probably will not be a problem.
You can see a few things on the tiny island, but the most popular is the glacial grooves.
The grooves were created by a glacier slowly sliding on the landscape and carving the grooves over time.
It is one of the coolest places to go in Ohio.
Put-In-Bay For One Of The Most Romantic Ohio Day Trips
The small town of Put-in-Bay is a great spot for a romantic getaway or even just a romantic day trip.
It is located on an island on the shores of Lake Erie, so you’ll be surrounded by beautiful beach views.
You can walk around the island, check out the shops, get a delicious meal, or just stroll along the sand.
Put-in-Bay is also home to Perry’s Victory and International Peace Memorial.
The memorial was put in place to remember the Battle of Lake Erie and the peace that followed for Canada, Britain, and the United States.
The small island also has its own state park, which is near Put-in-Bay, called the South Bass Island State Park.
There are also a few museums, a butterfly house, and a limestone cave, all waiting for you to explore them.
Hocking Hills State Park Is One Of The Best Ohio Day Trips
One of my favorite places to go in Ohio is Hocking Hills State Park .
Hocking Hills State Park is a natural Ohio attraction that everyone should take the time to visit.
While you explore the park you’ll find gorgeous waterfalls , scenic hiking trails , and unique rock formations dotted throughout the lush forest landscape.
The area around the state park is also full of fun activities. There are shops, restaurants, and historic museums.
If you are looking to escape to the great outdoors for one of your next day trips in Ohio, then you can’t go wrong with a day spent at Hocking Hills State Park.
Explore Ashtabula Beaches And Parks
Ashtabula is an adorable small town, probably best known for its wonderful Lakeshore Park.
The Lakeshore Park is located on the shores of Lake Erie and is about 54 acres of trails, sandy shores, and park area.
What makes the park and the beaches of Ashtabula so popular are actually a few different things.
The beaches are very pretty, and Lakeshore Park is full of amenities.
There are grassy areas where you can picnic or relax and play some horseshoe, a playground for kids, volleyball courts, pavilions, and even a public boat dock.
You could easily spend an entire day in Ashtabula.
That’s what makes it one of the best small towns in Ohio for a day trip.
Westerville Is One Of The Cutest Small Towns In Ohio
If you are looking to explore one of the cutest small towns in Ohio , head to Westerville.
For those near Columbus, Westerville is just a short 20-minute drive away.
In the small town, you will find a great main street with unique shops and restaurants.
You can stroll through the Sharon Woods Metro Park or the Inniswood Metro Garden if you want to enjoy some beautiful small-town landscapes.
For those that are interested in history, Westerville is a cool place to visit.
A fun fact about the town is that it was called ‘The Dry Capital of the World’ because it continued the prohibition of alcohol long after the US rolled back prohibition laws.
While you are in town, history lovers should also make a stop at the historic Everal Barn and Homestead.
Westerville is a quaint little town that is easily one of the best places to go in Ohio.
Explore Geneva-On-The-Lake Wineries
Geneva-on-the-Lake has a lot to offer for those looking to plan fun day trips in Ohio.
The town was one of the first lakeside resort towns in Ohio, is a great romantic getaway , and has tons of shops and restaurants to try out.
But one of the best things about Geneva-on-the-Lake is the area’s wineries.
Within about a 30-mile radius, all around Geneva-on-the-Lake, there are at least 20 different wineries.
You can choose to take your own winery tour or take one that is offered by one of the wine tour companies in the area.
People come from all over the state to spend a day sampling one-of-a-kind wines and stroll through the picturesque vineyards.
Stroll Through The Holden Arboretum
You can find the Holden Arboretum in Kirtland Ohio.
It is actually one of the largest botanical gardens and arboretums in the United States.
A trip to the Holden Arboretum can easily fill a day.
There are over 3,000 acres of natural areas and sensitive habitats.
Additionally, there are about 600 acres of planned gardens.
The arboretum has been open since 1931 and is one of the best places to go in Ohio if you want to explore a unique landscape.
Enjoy Family Ohio Day Trips To Cedar Point Amusement Park
One of the best family-friendly Ohio day trips is Cedar Point Amusement Park.
Cedar Point is located in Sandusky on a Lake Erie peninsula.
Ohio also has Cedar Point partly to thank for the title of “Roller Coaster Capital of the World”.
The amusement park has 18 roller coasters, all at different thrill levels.
Because it is also near the beach, there is a waterpark and you can also enjoy a private beach area with your ticket to the park.
Cedar Point is a popular family destination in the warmer months.
It is easily one of the best amusement parks in the Midwest , and it is one of the most fun places to go in Ohio.
There are so many fun options for Ohio day trips on this list, it is hard to pick just one.
But no matter what mood you are in or what interests you, there are cool places to go in Ohio for your next day trip.
Have you been to any of these fun Ohio destinations?
I would love to hear about your day trips in Ohio, so leave me a comment!
Packing Tips When Taking Day Ohio Day Trips
Read about how to travel with just carry-on sized luggage to make your trip easier and more organized.
A concealed travel pouch may be one of the most important items you bring along when taking day trips in Ohio. It is always important to protect your personal information. Identity thieves are everywhere.
This unisex RFID-blocking concealed travel pouch is lightweight and comes in several colors. It has lots of organization to give you peace of mind. You can place it under your hiking clothes next to your body to carry your ID safely.
If you have a pouch already that does not come with RFID protection, as I do, these RFID sleeves are the perfect solution.
This configuration comes with enough credit card sleeves that the entire family would be protected. They are slim too, so they will easily fit into your pouch or wallet.
If you are planning on taking a lot of pictures with your phone you will definitely want to consider an external charging battery . This Anker high-speed phone charging battery is the exact one I carry with me on all of my trips.
It can be used on a variety of phones, not just an iPhone like I have. And wow is it fast!
I like that it holds its charging capabilities for several uses so I do not have to worry about it while out and about, and if I forget to recharge it at night, it will still be good to go the next day.
My daughter gifted me with this FugeTek selfie stick and tripod setup for my birthday. I absolutely love it! It is made of lightweight aluminum and is so easy to use.
It has Bluetooth connectivity and is a breeze to use for taking selfies with all those nature shots in Iowa.
Hydration is so important when hiking. You want to remain hydrated throughout your Ohio travels to support your immune system which in turn will be stronger to fight off any germs you will encounter during your travels.
You will want to bring your own refillable water bottle with you.
I never leave home on a trip without my Bobble filtration bottle . The 18.5-ounce size is perfect for hiking and it fits nicely in the pocket of a backpack.
The replaceable carbon filter ensures fresh water when you want it.
Perhaps you are traveling a long distance and packing space is a premium in your suitcase, or in your car. Then this set of collapsible silicone foldable water bottles would work well for you. Would not take up much space at all.
You will want a backpack or daypack with you to store snacks, your water bottle, phone, extra clothes, etc.. when celebrating Christmas in Ohio. No matter the time of day or evening.
This foldable water-resistant backpack would be great.
It is very affordable and is available in many color options for you to choose from. The fact that it folds down into a zippered pouch will make it easy to pack!

Being a Buckeye myself I loved your list. I’ve been to several of them. Just a quick shout out about Kelley’s Island-you are allowed to drive cars on the island. Thanks again for the nice post.

The 8 Best Ticket Websites for Booking Day Tours and Travel Activities

The Handy Item I Always Pack: "It's not revolutionary, but a small Moleskine notebook is my one travel must-have. It's great for noting things you want to remember and it takes up hardly any space in your bag."
Ultimate Bucket List Experience: "Japan. I'd love to take a month off and visit the cities, temples, and countryside. I'm fascinated by the country's juxtaposition of ancient traditions and modern ambitions."

When it comes to booking travel, most of our attention goes to finding the best airfare , hotel rate , cruise price , and maybe car rental ; the big ticket, can’t-get-there-without-it , stuff. Those are obviously fundamental components of any trip. But they’re certainly not the only important bookings you’ll make. Once you’ve booked everything you need to get there, consider these activity and excursion ticket websites—the best of which let you search popular things to do and see in your destination. And whether you’re looking for something as exhilarating as skydiving or something as simple as a walking food tour, you can usually search for them on one site.
The excursions, tours, performances, and other activities you experience on your travels can make or break a trip. No one wants to be disappointed when an activity booking doesn’t work out or turns out not to be what you though it was—so you’ll want to be able to search offerings, and preferably to compare ratings of them. Plus, it’s essential to make sure you’re booking with reputable ticket websites offering reasonable prices.
The Best Excursion Ticket Websites for Travelers
Here are seven ticket websites and providers that won’t let you down. Click to read more.
Viator GetYourGuide Tripadvisor StubHub Airbnb Experiences Atlas Obscura Tiqets Groupon
Owned by TripAdvisor, Viator is a vast activity and excursion ticket website; one of the largest out there. Travelers can book anything from airport shuttle service, to guided tours, to skip-the-line admission at attractions all over the world. And because it’s similar to TripAdvisor, travelers can also browse reviews of the activity they’re eyeing. Most listings include comprehensive details about the tour and a generous cancellation policy (usually 24-hours prior to the activity with no penalty).
Viator does not operate the tours it sells. Rather, it’s a search engine of things to do. As such, its offerings tend to focus on cities and better-known travel destinations, although that includes excursions out of those places into the surrounding areas; like tours from Boston to New Hampshire’s White Mountains , tours of the Dutch countryside from a departure point in Amsterdam , etc. This makes Viator a great option for travelers who want to headquarter themselves in one hotspot but still experience the broader region.
GetYourGuide
Another day-tour-heavy option, GetYourGuide overlaps somewhat with Viator, but is focused more solely on experiences and tours (Viator includes services such as airport and in-town transportation services). Functionally, the sites aren’t very different; both offer an opportunity to compare tours and prices. And on that last note, it can be worth checking both: I found the exact same Niagara Falls day tour from Toronto on both sites. GetYourGuide allowed guests to book the base tour without the optional lunch and boat cruise for just $79, while Viator required guests to book the entire package for $138.
The 10 Best Group Travel Tour Companies
Tripadvisor
Tripadvisor leverages its massive inventory of user generated content to roll the research and booking process into one. Users can access all the standard tour information—such as age range, duration, start time, and language—while also browsing reviews and real-life photos from travelers who have actually booked the activity. The experience pages also feature what percentage of travelers would recommend a given activity, based on the “percentage of all Tripadvisor reviews for this product that have a bubble rating of 4 or higher.” The authenticity of the one-to-one style recommendations and opinions of fellow travelers can help give users the confidence to book.
Travelers without a specific landmark or tour in mind can also search for activities organized into top destinations like Las Vegas , Miami , and Washington D.C .
For more event-focused resale ticket website StubHub is a useful last-minute option for verified tickets to everything from sports and concerts to comedy shows and theater seats. For the uninitiated, StubHub is a resale marketplace for ticket holders (and, let’s be honest, scalpers) to unload tickets they can’t use. This means shopping on StubHub is a double-edged sword: You’ll likely pay well above face value for high-demand or sold out events, but you can also find great deals at the last minute if the opposite is true. In the former case, StubHub (or similar initial-sale and resale option Ticketmaster ) may be your only viable option. And in the latter case, StubHub can be a savvy way to save or even make some money; keep that in mind if you’ve ever bought some event tickets and then couldn’t attend.
Airbnb Experiences
Airbnb is all about living like a local, and Airbnb Experiences is no different. The emphasis here is on small or even private tours led by locals rather than tour companies, with an eye toward unique experiences rather than traditional sightseeing. Sometimes these experiences can be tailored to your interests: I booked a private bicycle tour of Berlin through Airbnb Experiences a few years back, and the guide all but ditched his preset itinerary and improvised based on my interests. As a result I got to see parts of the city I might never have found on my own.
One important consideration to remember: These are often regular folks, not full-time professional guides or tour operators, so it’s a good idea to bring a go-with-the-flow attitude on your excursion. Your experience may not be as polished or precise as a traditional tour, even if the host has been doing this for a while. Of course, the point of these experiences is to forgo those cookie cutter tours in favor of something different. AirBnB includes reviews and makes it easy to communicate with the experience host beforehand, so don’t hesitate to ask questions prior to booking.
Atlas Obscura
Speaking of forgoing the cookie cutter experience, Atlas Obscura focuses, as its name implies, on all things obscure: The bizarre, forgotten, and hard-to-reach corners of a given city or destination that you wouldn’t normally find on excursion ticket websites. While nowhere near as robust as the other entries on this list, Atlas Obscura also offers a curated selection of tours and experiences . It’s currently in a half dozen U.S. cities, with more to come. Think: A guided wine-and-bug (yes, insects) pairing experience in Los Angeles, or a trip inside a holographer (maker of holograms) laboratory in New York . The tours are offered through Atlas Obscura, but AirBnB handles the booking. After all, anyone can visit the Hollywood Walk of Fame, right? So why not be different and check out a … Sewage Garden ?
The 9 Best Sites to Book a Cruise
Launched in 2014, Amsterdam-based company Tiqets is a comparatively newer ticketing platform that emphasizes flexibility and convenience. Optional free cancellation polices are available on all bookings, allowing travelers to cancel tickets up to 11:59PM the night before the event. Tiqets also offers last minute deals on activities and events like palace tours , broadway shows , and city sightseeing tours . Browse by location or get inspired by their list of Most Popular Places to Visit. Tickets can be managed through their app ( iOS | Android ).
With a broader focus than the other sites on this list, Groupon can find great deals on everything from guided tours to restaurants at your destination . To search specifically for event tickets and travel activities, enter your destination in the search bar and browse their Things to Do category, which includes subcategories like Kids’ Activities, Nightlife, and Sports & Outdoors. From there, travelers can filter by price range, distance from the main destination, rating, and season.
Users can also browse via their Hotels & Travel section to book an entire trip via Groupon Getaways .

Yes, Whistler has been voted Top Ski Resort in the World by various publications, and the 200+ marked runs famous for champagne powder make it a no-brainer for winter fun. But there are tons of things to do in Whistler besides skiing.
There are loads of great restaurants in Whistler , making it a gourmet foodie escape. It also offers great summer lake activities at Lost Lake, includes BC’s most beautiful hike at nearby Joffre Lakes, and is a top spa and mountain biking destination.
Looking for some culture? The Squamish Lil’wat Cultural Centre is the best window into local First Nations culture.
Fraser Valley Winery Tour: Best Wine Day Trip from Vancouver
Did you think we’re just a one-trick pony of snowy mountains and water activities? Well, think again. To the east of Vancouver, you’ll find temperate Langley and the prime wine-making region of the Fraser Valley.
Renting a car and taking a DIY drive is a great day trip escape from Vancouver. Vista D’oro is a great place to see old-school wine-making perfected, while Backyard Vineyards is a small-volume producer that makes some of the best BC VQA sparkling whites around.
Want to take the guesswork out of it? A winery tour can even pick you up at downtown Vancouver hotels and take you straight to the action in a Mercedes Benz Sprinter van.
The small group tours include stops at up to five wineries over 6 hours.
Howe Sound: Best Vancouver Boat Day Trip
This picturesque body of water between Vancouver and the outdoor playground of Squamish is surrounded by a network of towering fjords. This makes it a great place to explore by boat. Renting one at Granville Island or Sewell’s Marina in Horseshoe Bay is a good start.
Expect to pay about $117.60 for 4 hours, so this day trip is best done in company.
Bombing around Vancouver’s waters is fun just for the ride, but strapping up with fishing gear and trying to land a big spring salmon (they can reach over 80 pounds) is one way to experience the Sound.
Looking to explore as part of a package? Then click the link below:
Grouse Mountain: Best Mountain Day Trip from Vancouver
Those towering North Shore Mountains that frame our city skyline aren’t just for show.
In fact, a 2800 metre gondola ride up from North Vancouver will transport you to a mountain paradise – complete with lumberjacks, bears, and beaver tails – but enough of the Canadian stereotypes.
Of course, the Wildlife Refuge and its star grizzlies, 30-minute lumberjack shows, and massive tail-shaped donuts are just the beginning. Some of my favourite things to do at Grouse Mountain are:
- Having a cold beer at Altitudes Bistro overlooking the city
- Going up to the highest point of the city at the Eye of the Wind
- Swinging through the Mountain Ropes Adventure
In winter, this is the area’s most accessible ski mountain, and in Vancouver in summer , you can hike up the mountain on the legendary Grouse Grind.
Squamish: Best of the Day Road Trips from Vancouver
When thinking of cool day trips from Vancouver, a trip up the legendary Sea to Sky Highway to Whistler (one of the world’s top-rated road trips) is in order.
About halfway up, you’ll come across this picturesque, sporty mountain town just 70 minutes from downtown Vancouver .
The name of the game here is outdoor adventure. Just look up at the imposing granite monolith that dwarfs the city. The Stawamus Chief offers a 4-hour intermediate hike with one of the best panoramic view rewards in the entire province.
Some other top things to do in Squamish include Via Ferrata climbing adventures (optimal for first-timers), some of the greatest white water rafting in the Lower Mainland, and a 2-hour Ropes Course Adventure .
You’ll also find Shannon Falls, British Columbia’s third-highest waterfall. Don’t forget too that there’s some amazing craft beer made in the area, the optimal nightcap for all that adventure.
Salt Spring Island: Top Island Day Trip from Vancouver
This tiny island in the Salish Sea, which is just 80 minutes by ferry from Vancouver, has a huge amount of character. This is one of the best places to visit from Vancouver if you’re seeking peace and quiet.
‘Canada’s Island of the Arts’ is a place to buy things that are fresh or made by hand. There are over 200 organic farms here, forming the base of British Columbia’s best little Artisan Market – some local farmers even provide their grass-fed lamb to the Queen.
Other highlights include small-batch smoked salmon, artisan gin, and apple pie moonshine. The 120 artisans here also sell jewellery, woodwork, pottery, fine art, body care, clothing, and more.
Don’t forget camping at Ruckle Park , tastings at Salt Spring Wild Cider , and visiting Salt Spring Island Cheese Company . Grabbing an Airbnb overnight and coming back with the trunk full of goodies is a Vancouver tradition.
Steveston Village: Best of the Cheap Day trips from Vancouver
This is one of the best day trips from Vancouver without a car. Yes, in just 40 minutes by Vancouver public transit , you can be whisked away to this tiny fishing village along the Fraser River.
On the fringes of the suburb of Richmond, this place has yet to be corrupted by big chain shops and six-lane highways.
Visiting Steveston gives great insight into the early economies of the area, in particular through the Gulf of Georgia Cannery Museum – a retrospect on the salmon industry of British Columbia and the many immigrant communities (primarily Japanese) that helped build the province.
Beyond this, a trip through Steveston is about artisan gift shops, fresh-off-the-boat seafood stands, and the obligatory load-up of fish and chips at the legendary Pajo’s . Not to mention, it’s a great place to take a Steveston whale-watching tour .
Seattle: Best City Day Trip from Vancouver
It’s hard to put this American supercity on the list because, let’s face it, you need way more than just a day.
That said, I’ve probably done this day trip from Vancouver 20+ times in my life. You can take the Vancouver to Seattle Bus , the Amtrack Cascades Train , or even a Vancouver to Seattle Seaplane flight .
It’s a little cumbersome, but it’s one of the best places to visit from Vancouver for locals due to:
- Major league American sports like the NFL, NHL and MLB
- A much more diverse concert and live music scene
- American brand-name shopping and discount outlet centres
- Unique tourist attractions like the Space Needle and Museum of Pop Culture
- Pike Place Market
Driving from Vancouver to Seattle for day trips takes just over two hours, more than doable with an early start. If you’ve got a bit of extra time on your Vancouver itinerary and want a little piece of Americana, this is the best cultural day trip you can make.
Harrison Hot Springs: Best Winter Day Trip from Vancouver BC
This small Fraser Valley resort community is just 90 minutes from Vancouver. It has been one of the most fun day trips near Vancouver since 1886 when the Canadian Pacific Railway brought its lakeside springs within reach.
The two relaxing, rejuvenating springs heat up to 65 °C (149 °F). Harrison Hot Springs Resort is the star of the show here, creating five different pools of different temperatures for the ultimate spa getaway experience. With two restaurants on-site, this is the ultimate ‘not lift a finger’ Vancouver day trip.
You can rent a cottage out here to soak in the hot springs. But you can also take a lovely forest hike alongside numerous waterfalls along the Miami Bridges Walk. And, of course, taking part in any number of fishing or boating activities on Harrison Lake is also a fine option.
If you’re looking to avoid the crowds of Vancouver’s best beaches in the summer, taking day trips to the lakeside beach here is a much better swimming option.
Sea to Sky Gondola: Top Day Trip for Views
An hour from Vancouver, this Swiss-style ski gondola whisks passengers 885 meters up Mount Habrich, providing amazing views of crystal blue Howe Sound and our Coast Mountain paradise.
The Sea to Sky Gondola is a mountain adventure wonderland that can be as hardcore as you want. Taking in the three panoramic view platforms and walking the Sky Pilot Suspension Bridge is included in every ticket.
Of course, if you’re willing to get a little more advanced on your day trips from Vancouver, you can go off on backcountry hiking tours, snowshoeing and tubing (winter), and even rock climbing (summer).
Throw in interpretive tours on the ecology of the area and the rich history of the local Skwxwu7mesh Nation, and this outdoor escape gets educational.
There’s also a licensed bar, and the Sky Pilot Restaurant offers live music, wine tastings, and all sorts of events. So, this Vancouver day tour has it all.
Sunshine Coast: Best Coastal Day Trip from Vancouver
A quick hour ferry hop across Howe Sound from Horseshoe Bay brings Vancouverites to the Sunshine Coast, famous for low annual rainfall and long, sunny summers. If you need a beach here, then Savary Island is Canada’s answer to Bermuda (don’t laugh).
This 180 km stretch of coast is famous for its laid-back attitude, unspoiled beaches, arts and crafts, and sneaky good culinary scene that rivals some of Vancouver’s best restaurants .
Most folks head to Sechelt for the galleries and boutiques along Cowrie Street, which also offers all sorts of vintage shops, tap houses, and gourmet restaurants.
Lovers of paddle sports also find plenty to do here. The Powell River Canoe Route is a solid way to spend a day on the water, but kayaking along the fjords of Desolation Sound is probably the best bet.
Britannia Mining Museum: Best Day Trip with Kids from Vancouver
This historic mine near Squamish makes for a fun day trip from Vancouver for those visiting town with children. The Britannia Mining Museum was once one of the largest copper ore mines in the British Empire.
Since closing up shop, this imposing 20-storey building has transformed into a fully interactive museum that’ll put you in the boots of a turn-of-the-century miner.
The train ride through the historic haulage tunnel is the highlight. But any of the over 7000 artifacts (some brought to life by in-person demonstrations) really kick things up a notch.
This is one of the best things to do in Vancouver with kids .
Visiting here also puts you on the Sea to Sky Highway, a scenic attraction in itself.
Garibaldi Provincial Park: Best of the Hiking Day Trips from Vancouver
The enormous Garibaldi Park is situated about halfway between Squamish and Whistler along the Sea to Sky Highway. While it takes about an hour to reach, it’ll feel like you’re days from civilization.
The area’s rugged mountains are covered in over 150 glaciers, contrasting with the dense Douglas fir and red cedar forests. It’s simply a paradise for those seeking a quick Vancouver hiking tour.
Some must-do hikes include Garibaldi Lake Trail (18 km, about 5 hours) and Black Tusk Trail (28 km, about 10 hours). Both are packed full of full of strata volcanos, turquoise blue lakes, and viewpoints galore.
Other local highlights include nearby Elfin Lakes, Cheakamus Lake, and Wedgemount Lake.
Vancouver Behind-the-Scenes Brewery Tour : Best Day Trip from Vancouver BC for Beer Lovers
Indulge in Vancouver’s vibrant craft brewery culture with visits to three top-rated breweries .
This brewery tour provides sample an array of locally brewed beers while leaving the driving to someone else.
Gather downtown at the Waterfront Station for an intimate group excursion , featuring exclusive tours at each brewery and priority seating for swift access to the brews.
The meeting point is at 901 W Cordova St. which is just across from Lions Pub . Simply look for the van.
Bowen Island Dinner and Zodiac Boat Tour: Most Peaceful Day Trip from Vancouver
Experience the excitement of a 3-hour zodiac tour departing from Vancouver and heading to Bowen Island , located at the mouth of Howe Sound.
Treat yourself to a delicious dinner and a refreshing drink at Doc Morgan’s , a popular spot on the island.
During the tour, you’ll also get to enjoy the thrill of a high-speed boat ride , ensuring an adventure-filled journey. Plus, we provide all the necessary ocean-ready gear for your comfort and safety.
Along the way, take in the stunning sights along the Vancouver waterfront , adding an extra layer of enjoyment to your memorable outing.

Read Your Way Through New Orleans
New Orleans is a thriving hub for festivals, music and Creole cuisine. Here, the novelist Maurice Carlos Ruffin shares books that capture its many cultural influences.

By Maurice Carlos Ruffin
Read Your Way Around the World is a series exploring the globe through books.
New Orleans is a tourist destination frequented as much for its local dishes (gumbo, jambalaya, among others) as for the spectacle that is Mardi Gras — where you may run into drunk college students on spring break, but could also bump into the Grammy Award-winning artist Jon Batiste. By some counts, it’s one of the most festive cities in America, with a party or two happening almost every week.
Behind all the festivities, though, is a rich and dark history. The city is an eclectic mix of Caribbean, French, Spanish and Native American cultures, and, depending on which neighborhood you encounter, you may feel a sense of disorientation. Historically, enslaved people from other states were sometimes sent to New Orleans as punishment, but the city also served as a home base for many Haitians seeking a new life after their country gained independence in 1804.
The literature of New Orleans is an important supplement to your experience of the city. These books are both a compass to guide you through its many different influences and a celebration of the free spirit that has made the city a haven for itinerant artists, writers and travelers in search of a new perspective.
What should I read before I pack my bags?
“Economy Hall: The Hidden History of a Free Black Brotherhood ,” by Fatima Shaik, provides a fascinating look at the city from the slavery era through the Jazz Age. Using primary documents that her father rescued from a trash hauler’s pickup truck, Shaik builds a nonfiction narrative that’s both illuminating and compulsively readable.
“New Orleans Griot: The Tom Dent Reader ,” a collection of Dent’s writings edited by Kalamu ya Salaam, covers the life of an important literary figure. These pieces provide an insider’s view of the city’s legendary Mardi Gras Indians , as well as Mississippi’s Free Southern Theater during the Black Arts movement. In many ways, modern New Orleans writers are descendants of Dent and his cohort.
Also consider a Pulitzer Prize-winning cult classic: John Kennedy Toole’s “A Confederacy of Dunces.” It is somewhat of a riff on Don Quixote and captures the cockeyed whimsy that helps natives live in a city that is below sea level and perpetually threatened with destruction by the forces of nature.
What books or authors should I bring along with me?
“Unfathomable City: A New Orleans Atlas ,” by Rebecca Solnit and Rebecca Snedeker, is a collection of essays that touches on almost every neighborhood in the city. Published in 2013, several years after the catastrophic damage caused during Hurricane Katrina and the government’s response , these snapshots will help orient the reader as they travel from place to place. One essay, for example, traces the connection between the city’s vibrant marching band culture and how those young members go on to become professional musicians.
Definitely read Sarah M. Broom’s memoir, “ The Yellow House ,” the 2019 winner of the National Book Award for nonfiction. This book deftly weaves the history of one family with the development of a neighborhood called New Orleans East, depicting life outside of the tourist districts where many working-class locals live. It’s about the dreams we have and the way those dreams do and don’t come true.
If I have no time for day trips, what books could take me farther afield instead?
Do a double header of Ernest J. Gaines classics, “Bloodline” and “A Lesson Before Dying.” Both books focus on the rural Black community in Pointe Coupée Parish, La., where he was raised. His ability to compellingly render that community, which was otherwise ignored by history, is one of the many reasons he earned fellowships from the MacArthur Foundation and the Guggenheim Foundation, among other accolades.
Before Hurricane Katrina, there was another natural disaster that redefined New Orleans: the Great Mississippi Flood of 1927 . John M. Barry’s “Rising Tide” examines, in enthralling prose, the flood’s consequences for the people who lived in the rural parts of Louisiana that lacked levee protection. The book is a tale of government mismanagement and neglect that foreshadowed the arrival of Katrina many decades later.
What books can take me behind closed doors?
Jarvis DeBerry was an opinion columnist for The Times-Picayune and NOLA.com for 21 years. His excellent collection of essays, “I Feel to Believe: Collected Columns , ” covers virtually every topic that was important to the life of the city between 1998 and 2019. Fearless in DeBerry’s explorations of race, policing, education, politics and the quirkiness of New Orleans, this book is a must read.
“1 Dead in Attic: After Katrina,” by Chris Rose, is often called the definitive book about life in the city at the time of Katrina. With gallows humor and a keen eye, Rose gives the ultimate local’s perspective. For many residents who lost loved ones or property and felt abandoned by the government, this book offered catharsis.
Also, Mona Lisa Saloy has a wonderful book of poetry called “Black Creole Chronicles” that captures so much of the linguistic cadence and rhythm of locals who are heavily influenced by both African American and Francophile culture. She preserves the voices of 20th century New Orleans like no one else.
What writer is everyone in town talking about?
Karisma Price’s debut poetry collection, “ I’m Always So Serious ,” has set New Orleans buzzing with the deftness of her vision and her attention to the kind of details that show the city in a fresh way. Also, Jami Attenberg, who moved to the city about a decade ago, has become a central and supportive figure in the local literary community. She has not one but two books out this year: “ 1,000 Words: A Writer’s Guide to Staying Creative, Focused, and Productive All Year Round” and the forthcoming “A Reason to See You Again.” The first is a craft book centered around Attenberg’s popular writing program ; the latter, a novel, follows a troubled mother and her two daughters over four decades.
What literary landmarks and bookstores should I visit?
Baldwin & Co. a short walk from Jackson Square — the centerpiece of New Orleans for centuries — has become a community hub in its three years. Classic bookstores with local owners like Community Book Center and Octavia Books , which just finished an extensive renovation, are great places to learn about the city’s literary history. Also, some of New Orleans’s streetcar lines are still operational and worth a ride — especially for fans of the Tennessee Williams play “A Streetcar Named Desire.” While the Desire line no longer exists, the other lines offer great views of the city at a leisurely pace.
What else should I consider?
New Orleans has beautiful parks and public venues. Go for a walk in Crescent Park, which has gorgeous views of the downtown skyline and places to sit and read. Audubon Riverview Park, known to locals as “The Fly,” and Audubon Park proper are great places to lay out a blanket with one’s book of choice.
A trip to New Orleans must also include beignets at Cafe Du Monde . For a classic New Orleans lunch, stop by Neyow’s , Parkway Bakery or Commander’s Palace and O’Delice or Sucré for dessert. Walk through the French Quarter, take a ride on the St. Charles streetcar line and visit the New Orleans Museum of Art . When you’re ready for dinner, consider Dooky Chase , Morrow’s or Herbsaint before nightcapping at the Maple Leaf Bar or Blue Nile while listening to live music. And remember: Tip the performers — it’s good etiquette.

Maurice Carlos Ruffin, who grew up in New Orleans, is the author of “ The American Daughters ” and “ The Ones Who Don’t Say They Love You .”
An earlier version of this article misstated where the bookstore Baldwin & Co. is located. The bookstore is not in Jackson Square, but a short walk from Jackson Square.
An earlier version of this article provided an incorrect title for Chris Rose’s book about the aftermath of Hurricane Katrina in New Orleans. The book is titled “1 Dead in Attic,” not “1 Dead in the Attic.”

Taylor Swift says 'most wonderful' Eras Tour will end in December
Taylor Swift knows that all good things must come to an end - and that includes her Eras Tour.
In an emotional speech during the 100th show of her record-breaking tour on Thursday night, the megastar confirmed that her current musical voyage would come to an end this year.
"You know, this is actually the 100th show of the tour," she told her fans at the first of three back-to-back shows in Liverpool, England, prompting joyful screams from Swifties.
"That blows my mind. That doesn't feel like a real statistic to me because this has definitely been the most exhausting, all-encompassing, but most joyful, most rewarding, most wonderful thing that has ever happened in my life this forth. These moments with you," she said, as shown in a video circulating on social media.

Acknowledging that many in the audience might be wondering how she will mark the milestone, Swift said, "The celebration of the 100th show for me means this is the very first time I've ever acknowledged to myself and admitted that this tour is going to end in December."
"Like, that's it, and that feels like so far away from now, but then again it feels like we just played our first show on this tour because you have made this so much fun for us that we wanted to do 100 shows, 150-something shows that we have on the whole tour," she continued.
The Eras Tour, which began in Glendale, Arizona on March 18, 2023, has been extended several times since it was first announced. It has since passed through the United States, South America, Asia and Australia, and is currently on its European leg before it makes a return to North America.
It now appears there will be no additions to the current dates listed on her website, with the last one a show in Vancouver, Canada, on December 8.
"I think that this tour has really become my entire life," Swift said, adding that "it's taken over everything."
"Like, I think I once had hobbies but I don't know what they were anymore. 'Cause all I do when I'm not on stage is, like, sit at home and try to think of clever, like, acoustic song mashups and think about what you might want to hear. Just - so like, when I'm not on the stage, I'm dreaming about being back on the stage with you guys," she continued.
Swift thanked her fans for all the work they have put in to be at her show, including making plans "so far in advance," memorizing lyrics and figuring out transportation.
The Eras Tour has had a staggering impact on tourism, recently causing a spike in air travel across Europe.
United Airlines revealed in May that demand for flights to Milan and Munich, where Swift is set to perform in July, has soared, with upward of 45% more passengers compared with last year.
Her recent concerts at Edinburgh, Scotland, led to seismic activity being detected four miles from the stadium where the singer was performing, according to the British Geological Society.
The historic tour has also been accused of pushing up inflation and is predicted by British bank Barclays to boost spending by nearly $1 billion in the United Kingdom.
