MSC Cruises Ships by Size, Age and Class (Updated 2023)

MSC Grandiosa

MSC Cruises has an active fleet of 22 ships currently. They are currently one of the largest cruise line fleets in the world.

Their next ship, MSC World America will launch in 2025 – taking them to 23 ships.

Introduction to MSC Cruises

MSC Cruises is a Swiss-Italian cruise line, founded back in 1989 in Naples, Italy.

A sibling company of the giant Mediterranean Shipping Company (MSC), MSC has strong roots connecting it with the sea dating back to 1675.

Since 1989, MSC Cruises has built a formidable fleet of cruise ships, with the last few years adding several brand new ships per year on average and an order book with many more lined up.

Whilst the cruise shutdown of 2020 stopped MSC from sailing briefly, they were quick to continue the building of their new ships and did not sell off any of their current vessels.

This guide will help you work out which MSC Cruises’ ship is which!

MSC Ships by Size (from largest to smallest)

What does ‘tonnage (grt)’ mean.

GRT (Gross Registered Tonnage) is a term used to calculate the volume inside a ship. It is a measure of cubic capacity and is calculated by the total volume from inside the hull and decks of the ship. 1 GRT = 100 cubic feet of space. In essence, the bigger the GRT – the more ‘space’ the ship has for passengers, cargo, etc.

How are ‘Passengers (Max)’ calculated?

You’ll see multiple numbers for passengers on ships – this is because many ships include extra beds in cabins (such as the sofa/couch can convert to a pull-out bed) – but the majority of cabins usually have 2 people in them. the ‘Max’ number is if every cabin used their additional pull-out bed, etc. This number is unlikely to be reached very frequently.

MSC Ships by Age (from newest to oldest)

Are all msc ships new builds.

Only two of MSC Cruises’ ships ( MSC Armonia and MSC Sinfonia ) are not new-builds for MSC Cruises. These two ships are ex-Festival Cruises ships (previously named European Vision and European Stars ).

They were acquired when Festival Cruises went bankrupt and MSC Cruises purchased them for their operations.

MSC Cruises chose to use a modified version of the European-class ships and built MSC Lirica and her twin sister, MSC Opera .

MSC Ships by Class (from newest to oldest)

What is the meraviglia plus class.

The Meraviglia Plus class was built after the success of MSC Meraviglia . The Plus class is an extended version of the ship (approx 15m longer) and has slightly larger facilities, including more cabins – giving an extra passenger capacity of 679 ( MSC Grandiosa – 6,334 compared to MSC Meraviglia 5,642).

What is the Seaside EVO class?

The Seaside EVO class was built after the success of MSC Seaside . This class is 16m longer, offering bigger facilities throughout the ship and more cabins. This enables a higher passenger capacity over the existing Seaside class of 548 passengers ( MSC Seashore 5,632 compared to MSC Seaside 5,084)

Additionally, newer classes of MSC ships are more environmentally advanced, offering enhanced wastewater treatment facilities and enhanced selective catalytic reductions (i.e reduced emissions).

MSC Cruises has 22 ships currently in service in 2024 following the addition of the newest ship, MSC Euribia.

With so many ships, it can be tricky to know which one to choose. When you see a particular cruise advertised, it’s good to know if it’s on one of the newer, bigger ships or an older, smaller one. This can help you to work out if the cruise you want to book is good value for money.

MSC Euribia

Even regular cruisers can get mixed up about which ship is which, so I’ve created this handy guide to MSC Cruises ships, with tables to order the MSC ships by size, year and class.

MSC Ships By Size

The following table shows MSC cruise ships by size, ordered from largest to smallest:

Gross tonnage is a measurement of the overall internal volume of a ship. It’s one of the best ways to measure the size of a cruise ship .

The passenger number is based on how many passengers each cruise ship can accommodate at maximum occupancy. That would mean that all the extra beds are in use.

In reality, ships don’t cruise at maximum occupancy because sometimes you will have just two people in a cabin and so they won’t use the sofa bed or Pullman beds .

Balcony room on MSC Virtuosa with extra beds in use

How Big Are MSC Cruise Ships?

MSC Cruises’ ships range in size from 248 metres long to 333 metres long. Each ship can accommodate between 2,520 and 6,762 passengers over 13 to 21 decks.

Compared to other mainstream cruise lines, MSC Cruises’ ships are quite average in size, with some mega-ships, some large ships and a few medium-sized ships.

MSC Cruises has no small ships . However, in 2023, the MSC Group launched a new cruise line called Explora Journeys. This features only small, luxury ships, the first of which was Explora I .

Which MSC Cruises Ship Is the Biggest?

The biggest MSC Cruises ship is MSC World Europa, which launched in November 2022. This World-class mega-ship can accommodate up to 6,762 guests with 21 decks.

MSC World Europa

MSC World Europa was used as a World Cup Cruise Ship Hotel in the 2022 World Cup in Qatar. The Yacht Club area of the ship provided accommodation for the family members of the players while the rest of the ship offered luxury accommodation for fans.

MSC World Europa is one of the top-10 biggest cruise ships in the world, behind Royal Caribbean’s Oasis-class ships and the newer Icon Class. MSC World Europa is only around 5% smaller than the Oasis-class ships. However the rest of the MSC fleet is more aligned with other cruise ship sizes, not quite being the biggest.

Prior to the launch of MSC World Europa, the biggest MSC cruise ship title was a tie between MSC Grandiosa and MSC Virtuosa.

MSC Virtuosa

These virtually identical sister ships are 331 metres long and can accommodate up to 6,334 passengers. They each have 19 decks, 15 of which are accessible to passengers.

Are Bigger Cruise Ships Better?

Which size of ship is the best is a matter of personal preference and each has its advantages. For some people, bigger is always better, whereas other people will only choose to cruise on small or medium-sized ships.

Bigger ships tend to be newer and have more features and attractions on board, this can also mean that cruise tickets cost more.

Smaller ships have their advantages in that they tend to offer more port-intensive itineraries as they can access some ports which larger ships cannot.

MSC Ships By Year

The following table shows MSC Cruises ships from newest to oldest…

Which Is the Newest MSC Cruises Ship?

The newest MSC Cruises ship currently in service is MSC Euribia, which launched in 2023. She’s not the biggest ship in the fleet, but instead focuses on being a super-stylish cruise option packed with innovative technology.

Future MSC Cruises ships

In 2025, we can expect to see a sister-ship to MSC World Europa with the name of MSC World America. Third and fourth World-class ships will follow in 2026 and 2027.

MSC Ships By Class

In the MSC Cruises fleet, the ships are grouped into classes. Each ship in a class is very similar, with a few small differences on board.

The following table shows MSC Cruises ships grouped by class…

Seaside EVO Class

MSC Cruises had a new class of ship for 2021, the Seaside EVO-class. Beginning with the launch of MSC Seashore in August 2021, Seaside EVO-class ships are slightly larger than Seaside-class ships.

Ultra Luxury Class

In the spring of 2023, MSC launched the first of a new class of small, ultra-luxury cruise ships . These six new ships, built over five years, will be the smallest in the fleet at around a third the size of MSC Grandiosa. These aren’t part of the MSC Cruises fleet, instead, they fall under a new sister brand called Explora Journeys.

MSC’s Ultra Luxury Class ships will be aimed at guests who enjoy the MSC Yacht Club, offering a premium experience for wealthy guests who want the best of the best. They will be named Explora I to Explora VI.

To Conclude

MSC Cruises has ships of various sizes, with the largest ships being almost three times the size of the smallest ones in terms of volume (gross tonnage). As with all cruise lines, ships have got bigger over the years and the newest ships tend to be larger.

If you prefer smaller, more intimate ships, then look out for the MSC Group’s new ultra-luxury ships in the Explora Journeys brand.

The ultimate guide to MSC Cruises ships and itineraries

Gene Sloan

MSC Cruises may be the biggest cruise line you've never heard of — assuming you're an American.

While the Switzerland-based company is the third-biggest cruise line in the world, it has far less name recognition among Americans than big U.S.-based lines such as Royal Caribbean and Carnival Cruise Line . That's because, until recently, MSC Cruises mostly catered to Europeans. A large percentage of its customers came from countries such as Italy, Germany, France and Spain.

That's all changing now — and in a big way.

For more cruise guides, news and tips, sign up for TPG's cruise newsletter .

As it expands its fleet at a rapid pace , MSC Cruises is massively building its footprint in North America in an effort to woo more Americans. As recently as 2017, the line only had a single vessel based in North America. Now it's up to three ships sailing out of U.S. ports, and by the end of 2023, that number will have shot up to five.

All the North America-based ships are marketed heavily to Americans, and the line has tailored some of the features and activities on the vessels to a North American crowd.

Like Royal Caribbean and Norwegian Cruise Line , MSC Cruises has been building big resortlike vessels that offer every sort of amusement known to humans, from giant water parks to race car simulators. It currently operates eight of the 20 biggest cruise ships in the world — one of which (MSC Meraviglia) now calls North America home with year-round sailings out of New York City.

3 things TPG loves about MSC Cruises

  • Its affordability
  • The incredible array of activities on its ships
  • The status match it offers with its loyalty program

What we could do without

  • Onboard announcements in five languages (on overseas sailings)

The MSC Cruises fleet

MSC Cruises has grown enormously in recent years. As recently as early 2017, the line had just 12 ships in operation. But it's added new ships at a rapid pace over the past six years and now operates 22 vessels, more than any other major line besides Royal Caribbean and Carnival. It also has three more giant new ships on the way in the next few years.

If that sounds like too many ships to get your head around, note that all 22 of the vessels in operation, as well as the three on order, fall into six distinct classes . The ships within each of the classes have similar sizes and onboard attractions. If you know one ship in the class, you know them all.

As a result of its rapid growth, MSC Cruises recently passed Norwegian to become the world's third-biggest cruise brand when measured by passenger capacity. Only Royal Caribbean and Carnival are bigger.

Not including pulldown bunks and pullout sofas, MSC Cruises' 22 ships have 77,832 berths — about 21,000 more than Norwegian's fleet. At its current pace of growth, MSC Cruises could soon pass Carnival to become the world's second-biggest line.

As noted above, the MSC Cruises fleet includes eight of the world's 20 biggest cruise vessels — MSC World Europa , MSC Euribia , MSC Virtuosa, MSC Grandiosa, MSC Meraviglia , MSC Bellissima, MSC Seashore and MSC Seascape . Built in the last six years, these eight ships aren't quite as big as Royal Caribbean's giant Oasis Class vessels (the world's biggest cruise ships), but they're right up there when it comes to amenities and passenger capacity.

The grande dame of the MSC Cruises fleet is its recently unveiled MSC World Europa. At 215,863 tons, it's the biggest MSC Cruises ship ever built and the first of a new series of so-called World Class vessels that are nearly as big as Royal Caribbean's Oasis Class ships.

The next-biggest ships in the MSC Cruises fleet are its recently unveiled Meraviglia Class vessels: MSC Meraviglia, MSC Bellissima, MSC Grandiosa, MSC Virtuosa and MSC Euribia. Similar in design, these five ships aren't quite as big as MSC World Europa, but they're right up there when it comes to size, amenities and passenger capacity.

MSC Grandiosa, MSC Virtuosa and MSC Euribia, which debuted in 2019, 2021 and 2023, respectively, are a tad longer than MSC Bellissima and MSC Meraviglia and are considered a subset of the class known as Meraviglia Plus. Each can hold 4,842 passengers at double occupancy (or 6,334 passengers if every last pulldown bunk and pullout sofa is filled).

The other two Meraviglia Class ships, which date to 2019 and 2017, can carry more than 5,600 passengers with every berth filled.

In addition to these five giants, MSC Cruises also operates four large Seaside Class ships. Each has a total capacity of 5,336 to 5,632 passengers.

Add those in, and MSC Cruises operates 10 of the world's 35 biggest cruise ships, plus four somewhat smaller Fantasia Class vessels that can each hold around 4,400 passengers at maximum occupancy.

Together, the 14 World, Meraviglia, Seaside and Fantasia Class vessels make up MSC Cruises' big-ship fleet. The line's remaining eight vessels, split among two classes, are considerably smaller, with maximum occupancy topping out at 2,700 to 3,200 passengers.

The eight smaller ships, which in general are the line's older ships, allow MSC Cruises to offer itineraries to places that aren't as easy for big ships to visit. Not all ports in the world can handle a ship the size of the World Class or Meraviglia Class vessels, although even the biggest MSC Cruises ships are still designed to be able to call at most ports around the world.

Among the smallest MSC Cruises ships is the MSC Armonia.

The smaller ships also appeal to a subset of MSC Cruises fans who are willing to give up some onboard amenities in exchange for intimacy. They're usually less expensive on a per-day basis, too.

In addition to all the above, MSC Group — the line's parent company — has announced plans for yet another class of big ships to start arriving later this decade, though few details have been released. MSC Group is also developing a series of small luxury vessels that'll operate under a separate brand called Explora Journeys.

Destinations and itineraries

msc cruises largest ship

MSC Cruises sails almost everywhere in the world, but its heaviest presence is in Europe, where it's the biggest cruise operator.

In a typical summer, the line will deploy the vast majority of its ships in the Mediterranean or northern Europe. In recent years, the line has also kept at least a couple of ships in Florida in summer for voyages to the Caribbean and the Bahamas. This year, the line had two ships based in Florida for summer sailings to the Caribbean and the Bahamas, plus one ship sailing out of New York City for the summer.

During winter, MSC Cruises typically will add more ships to the Caribbean and the Bahamas. (For winter 2023-2024, it expects to have six in the region.) It'll also typically send four or five ships to South America in winter and often deploys vessels in winter to South Africa and the Middle East.

For winter 2023-2024, it'll have one ship in South Africa. The line's Middle East deployment this year has been cut back due to the conflict between Israel and Hamas.

Additionally, MSC Cruises often offers an around-the-world cruise in winter on a single ship.

In North America, MSC Cruises ships have generally sailed out of Miami , but the line recently added Port Canaveral and New York City as home ports, too. The line also offers cruises from the Caribbean islands of Barbados, Martinique and Guadeloupe, and in a major development, the line opened its first private island, Ocean Cay MSC Marine Reserve , in the Bahamas in 2019. It's a major stop for many MSC Cruises itineraries in the region.

In Europe, major MSC Cruises hubs include Southampton, England; Copenhagen; Kiel and Hamburg in Germany; Ancona, Venice, Genoa, Naples, Palermo, Bari and Civitavecchia (the port for Rome) in Italy; Barcelona, Valencia and Palma de Mallorca in Spain; and Marseille, France.

Who sails MSC Cruises?

msc cruises largest ship

MSC Cruises is increasingly known for having big, bustling megaships that'll appeal to people who like a megaresort experience. In other words, if you're the kind of person who loves staying on property at Disney World or at a giant Las Vegas resort , this could be the line for you.

The bigger MSC Cruises ships offer vacationers a ton of options for dining (some vessels have more than a dozen distinct places to eat dinner or at least grab a quick bite) or entertainment. They're lively and fun.

They also have an inordinate amount of teen- and tween-friendly attractions — everything from some of the largest waterslides at sea to sprawling amusement areas with race car simulators, flight simulators and XD cinemas (more on all this below). That makes them particularly appealing to families, including multigenerational groups. Families are a big part of MSC Cruises' business.

But it's not just families that flock to MSC Cruises.

The line's ships are designed to offer something for everyone, and they thus appeal to a wide demographic, including couples of all ages and even solo travelers (the line has added solo cabins on its newer ships and occasionally runs promotions for solo travelers). They also draw customers from a wide range of the income spectrum.

At one level, MSC Cruises ships have a for-the-masses feel. However, overlaid across many of the line's ships are high-end suites, upscale restaurants and luxury services — most notably the suites and amenities in the exclusive, upscale MSC Yacht Club areas found on some vessels (more on that later). As a result, the line draws a good number of luxury-seeking travelers.

The demographic profile of MSC Cruises ships can be markedly different depending on where the vessels are based. On Caribbean sailings out of Florida, you'll find that a large percentage of passengers are English-speaking North Americans.

MSC Cruises voyages in Europe are often heavily filled with Europeans speaking Italian, German, Spanish and French, as well as some English speakers. In Europe, the line offers onboard programming in all five of these languages (all crew members speak English no matter where the ships are sailing).

Reality check: Due to the diverse origins of passengers on European sailings, the line typically makes announcements in all five of the aforementioned languages. This can result in extraordinarily long announcements at times, which can be a distraction to some cruisers. The good news is that on sailings out of U.S. ports, only safety announcements are made in all five languages. Other announcements are in English only.

Cabins and suites

msc cruises largest ship

MSC Cruises offers a wide range of accommodations on its ships. On its newest vessels, you'll find everything from relatively low-cost, windowless "interior" cabins that measure as little as 172 square feet (perfect for the budget traveler) to suites more than five times that size that sprawl across two decks.

Still, MSC Cruises doesn't offer the sort of truly giant suites (more than 1,000 to 2,000 square feet) you'll find on some Norwegian and Royal Caribbean ships.

msc cruises largest ship

At the high end, the accommodations are aimed at affluent travelers who, for whatever reason, prefer the megaship experience to being on a luxury ship, and they can be quite impressive.

The biggest suites on MSC Grandiosa, which launched in 2019, span two levels and offer around 635 square feet of interior space, plus another 237 square feet of outdoor balcony space.

msc cruises largest ship

On more than half of MSC Cruises' ships, many of the top suites are part of an exclusive, keycard-accessed area called the MSC Yacht Club . Billed as an upscale "ship within a ship" and aimed at luxury travelers, the MSC Yacht Club is at the very top of vessels and comes with a private lounge, a pool, sunning areas and even its own restaurant.

MSC Yacht Club accommodations also come with 24-hour butler service and a dedicated concierge.

Solo cabins (called interior studios) measuring just 127 square feet can be found on the line's seven newest vessels.

Insider tip: Passengers can use the interactive TVs in cabins to browse information, find out about daily events and activities, check bills and book services. On some ships, MSC for Me interactive wristbands can open your cabin door and also allow you to book services or make contactless payments for items on board.

Restaurants and dining

msc cruises largest ship

While a few of MSC Cruises' smallest ships have relatively limited dining venues, many of the line's vessels offer a wide range of choices.

On the line's recently unveiled MSC Euribia, for instance, there are nearly a dozen distinct eateries, as well as a number of bars and lounges that serve at least small bites. MSC Seashore has five specialty restaurants that feature waterfront, outdoor seating on the ship's boardwalk.

Every vessel has at least one or more main dining rooms and a casual buffet where meals are included in the fare.

For dinner in a main dining room, you must either have My Choice dining with the Aurea experience (a flexible dining option where you dine whenever you want) or classic dining (where you have a fixed table and time for dinner).

Nearly every ship also has at least one — and sometimes quite a few — extra-charge venues. Among the most common across the fleet is the American-style steakhouse Butcher's Cut, which is found on more than half the line's vessels. There also are sushi bars on more than half the line's ships, with varying names like Kaito Sushi and Galaxy Sushi.

The line's newest ships have teppanyaki restaurants, too, and passengers on MSC Cruises' Seaside Class ships, as well as MSC Meraviglia and MSC Splendida, can dine at a Mediterranean-style seafood restaurant.

Several of the line's newest vessels, including MSC Grandiosa and MSC Bellissima, also have the French cuisine-serving L'Atelier Bistrot.

Entertainment and activities

MSC Cruises offers a broad range of entertainment and activities on its ships. As noted above, the line's biggest vessels offer multiple entertainment venues, from Broadway-style theaters to spaces for circus-like performances; all manner of deck-top attractions; large casinos; and full-service spas. Plus, you'll find multiple bars, lounges and nightlife spots.

Theaters and shows

msc cruises largest ship

Like other megaship lines, MSC Cruises is known for big, glitzy theater productions performed in onboard theaters that are as state-of-the-art as anything you'll find on Broadway.

On the line's newer ships, such as MSC Euribia, MSC Virtuosa and MSC Grandiosa, there are main theaters that hold nearly 1,000 people. They offer as many as six different full-scale theatrical productions during a typical voyage, with multiple showtimes for each production and a range of styles. You'll find original Broadway-style musicals, piano concerts and even operas.

Some MSC Cruises ships have high-tech, multipurpose entertainment spaces that serve as comedy clubs and karaoke bars but can also transform into music venues. Dubbed the TV Studio & Bar on some ships, these spaces also house radio and TV broadcasting equipment, and they can host games, quizzes and talent contests aired live on TV sets in cabins.

Other interior attractions and activities

msc cruises largest ship

In addition to entertainment spaces, the interiors of MSC Cruises ships are loaded with other venues where passengers can kick back and let loose day and night, including a seemingly endless array of bars, lounges and nightspots.

Every MSC Cruises ship has a casino, and on the line's larger vessels, they are big operations. Le Grand Casino on MSC Grandiosa, for instance, has 164 slot machines, 12 table games (including blackjack, roulette and poker) and its own bar.

The five Meraviglia and Meraviglia Plus Class vessels also have soaring interior mall-like spaces called Gallerias with bars, restaurants and retail shops, as does the new MSC World Europa.

Many of the Gallerias, for example, are home to an innovative chocolate bar and boutique created by well-known French patissier and chocolatier Jean-Philippe Maury.

The Gallerias on the five Meraviglia and Meraviglia Plus Class vessels — MSC Euribia, MSC Virtuosa, MSC Grandiosa, MSC Meraviglia and MSC Bellissima — are topped with one of the most stunning features found at sea: a dazzling "digital sky" made with curving LED screens that offer regular light shows during the day and evening. There's something similar on MSC World Europa.

The bigger MSC Cruises ships also have interactive game zones with such attractions as Formula One racing simulators, immersive XD cinemas, arcade games and even full-size bowling alleys.

msc cruises largest ship

For something more soothing, all MSC Cruises ships include spas. These can be quite big on the larger vessels, with expansive thermal areas and a wide choice of treatments and services.

Insider tip: Passengers can get information about onboard entertainment and restaurants (and make reservations) on the interactive screens found around MSC Cruises vessels.

Top-deck attractions

msc cruises largest ship

The top decks of MSC Cruises ships offer pools, hot tubs and plenty of lounge space, plus some spectacular family-focused fun zones — on the line's newest ships, at least.

On the line's Meraviglia and Seaside Class ships, top-deck amenities include sprawling back-of-the-ship water parks with multiple waterslides, ropes courses and watery play areas for the little ones.

msc cruises largest ship

Some ships even have zip lines — the longest at sea.

Additionally, the main pool areas on the newest MSC Cruises ships are among the biggest and most stunning at sea. Some of the line's ships also have adults-only pools topped with glass ceilings that can be opened on warm days.

Children's programs

msc cruises largest ship

MSC Cruises has some of the most extensive children's programs at sea, with dedicated clubs and activities for children as young as a couple of months old through the age of 17.

On most ships, the line offers programming for five distinct age groups.

For the very youngest cruisers, there's Baby Club, a program for babies and toddlers up to the age of 3. The line partnered with baby care brand Chicco to develop dedicated Baby Club play areas on every ship with toys, games and music and rhythm activities. You can leave your toddlers at the clubs, which have dedicated staff, or stay and play with them.

MSC Cruises ships also have a dedicated Mini Club (ages 3 to 6) and Junior Club (ages 7 to 11) with age-appropriate activities. Designed in partnership with the Lego Group, the Mini Clubs offer games, events and activities such as arts and crafts. Junior Clubs have a Masterchef at Sea Juniors competition, plus acting, dancing and singing activities.

MSC Cruises ships also have Young Club, a tween program (ages 12 to 14) that includes sports tournaments, high-tech games and other activities.

Then there's Teen Club (ages 15 to 17), which hosts disco parties, karaoke parties and Wii, Xbox and PlayStation 4 tournaments. On MSC Grandiosa, teens even get the chance to pilot a drone through an obstacle course during an activity called the Drone Academy, and the ship holds a teen dance competition designed in partnership with the company behind "The X Factor."

Kids and teens clubs on newer MSC Cruises ships can also access cutting-edge equipment like 3D printing machines, virtual reality devices and 3D product scanning, all of which are used in activities.

What to know before you go

Required documents.

If you're a U.S. citizen on a cruise that starts and ends in a U.S. port, you'll need either a current passport or an official copy of your birth certificate and a driver's license or other government-issued photo identification to sail. Passports must be valid for at least six months.

For cruises from international ports, you'll need a passport. It's important that the name on your reservation is listed exactly as it appears on your passport or other official proof of nationality.

MSC Cruises adds an automatic service charge of $16 per person to final bills on sailings out of U.S. ports. Sailings with pricing in euros have a 12 euro charge ($13.13 at current exchange rates). Children 2 to 11 pay half the adult rate on most cruises. Children under 2 are not charged for service.

Also, a 15% gratuity is added to bills at bars for cruisers who do not have a drinks package. If you buy a drinks package, the gratuity charges for drinks is folded into the package price when you book it. A 15% service charge is also added to items in minibars, salons and spas.

MSC Cruises has been rolling out Wi-Fi with speeds so fast that you'll be able to watch Netflix from your room on your mobile device. Unlike some lines, though, MSC Cruises doesn't offer flat-fee pricing for Wi-Fi. Instead, MSC Cruises charges by the number of devices you use and how you want to use the internet (think: browsing, texting, sending emails or video streaming).

Basic packages for browsing start around $72 for one device with unlimited data. A two-device plan with unlimited data for browsing costs about $109. There's also a four-device browsing plan for about $223. If you're looking to stream video along with other internet uses, you'll need a streaming plan. These start around $100 for one device and can be as high as $313 for a four-device plan.

Unlike other cruise lines, MSC Cruises does not let passengers switch their internet plan from one device to another during the cruise, even if they're only using one device at a time. Make sure you sign up for the Wi-Fi plan on the device you intend to use it with. If you'll want access on both your phone and your tablet, you will need a two-device plan.

Passengers can chat with friends and family on board ships even if they don't have an internet package by downloading the MSC for Me app to a smart device. The app also lets you book services on board.

Carry-on drinks policy

Unlike some lines, MSC Cruises doesn't allow passengers to bring their own alcohol on board.

Smoking policy

Smoking (including electronic cigarette smoking) is allowed in a limited number of designated areas on ships, with the primary smoking area on ships being an outdoor pool area that varies by ship and is indicated by signage. Smoking is forbidden in cabins and on cabin balconies, and those who violate this rule will face a $250 fee.

Unlike some lines, MSC Cruises does not build self-service launderettes onto its ships. Vessels offer extra-charge laundry and dry-cleaning services.

Electrical outlets

All vessels have standard North American-style, 110-volt outlets in rooms, as well as European-style, 220-volt outlets. A growing number of vessels also have USB ports in cabins.

For cruises in the Caribbean, South America and South Africa, as well as on MSC Grand Voyages going to Europe and to Australia, the onboard currency is the U.S. dollar.

On cruises in other parts of the world, the onboard currency is the euro. All vessels operate on a cashless system with any onboard purchases you make posting automatically to your onboard account. You'll receive a Cruise Card (or, on the newer ships, an MSC for Me wristband) that you can use to make purchases.

Drinking age

You must be at least 21 years old to consume alcohol on sailings in the U.S. and the Caribbean. The drinking age on sailings everywhere else in the world is 18.

During the day, there's no specific dress code, and people dress casually. If it's a sea day in a warm-weather destination and you're bound for the top deck, that means dressing for the beach — T-shirts, shorts and bathing suits (with a cover-up to put on when you go inside) are just fine.

On most evenings, the line recommends "smart casual" dress, meaning summery dresses for women and a lightweight jacket for men. On select days, the line also holds Gala evenings on its ships where the dress code can be more formal. For Gala evenings, if dining in a main dining room, the line suggests a tuxedo, dinner jacket or dark suit and tie for men and a dressy outfit, formal gown or cocktail dress for women.

MSC Cruises loyalty program

MSC Cruises has a point-based frequent cruiser program, the MSC Voyagers Club , that has four tiers ranging from Classic (requiring 1 point) to Diamond (10,000 points).

Members earn points based on the length of the cruises they take and which "experience" they book on those sailings. There are four different "experiences" you can book on an MSC Cruises sailing, each with different inclusions and price points. The most basic "Bella" experience will get you fewer points than the top "MSC Yacht Club" experience.

For a sailing of under five nights, for instance, your earnings would range from 200 to 800 points depending on the experience you book. For cruises that are five to nine nights in length, you'd earn from 500 to 1,500 points depending on the experience.

Every person in your stateroom will earn points for the cruise. You can also earn points with onboard spending and any bookings you made before embarkation. You'll earn 100 points for every $150 in prepaid and onboard expenses.

Know, though, that there are a couple of key caveats. Only the Voyagers Club member who makes the final payment for the onboard expenses will receive those points. For prepaid expenses, points will be equally distributed among the cabin occupants.

Say, for example, the total amount of prepaid onboard services that apply to all cabin occupants before the cruise is $600. If there are four cabin occupants, the spending for the points calculation of each member will be $150, which is equal to 100 points.

As is typical for cruise line loyalty programs, the entry-level tier (Classic) doesn't bring all that many truly valuable rewards. By far the most alluring benefit at this level is the 5% discount that members get when booking future sailings (note that this discount is not valid on Tandem and MSC Grand Tours). That's real savings every time you book a cruise.

The real perks begin at Diamond status, which brings a free dinner in an extra-charge restaurant, priority embarkation at the start of a cruise and priority disembarkation at the end of a cruise.

Unlike with most cruise line loyalty programs, you won't automatically keep your status forever with MSC Cruises. Once achieved, your status is good as long as you take a cruise at least once every 36 months. If you don't, not only will your points disappear, but your entire account will be erased, requiring you to re-enroll and start all over again.

That's the downside of the MSC Voyagers Club. However, the program also comes with one very big upside: MSC Cruises will let you status match your way to top-tier Diamond status based on your status level with any of more than two dozen other loyalty programs — not just those run by competing cruise lines but also those operated by Marriott, Hyatt and Hilton. It's very rare in the cruise world.

How much does an MSC Cruises voyage cost?

MSC Cruises is known for some of the most affordable ships at sea. It's not uncommon to find MSC Cruises voyages to the Caribbean and the Bahamas from under $75 per person, per night, including all taxes and fees — at least in the offseason.

For instance, at the time of publication, four-night sailings from Miami to the Bahamas in September 2024 start at just $249 per person, not including taxes and fees of $100. That works out to just $87.25 per person, per night, with taxes and fees, for a package that includes your lodging, transportation and meals.

As you might expect, pricing for ships will generally be lower during offseason periods such as September, October and parts of November.

The timing of when you book can also matter. Cruises book up much further in advance than airplanes or hotels, and many cruisers will tell you the best pricing for any given sailing often is available when cruises first go on sale (which can be a good two years before a departure). Booking far in advance also gives you the best chance of getting your preferred cabin type and location on a ship.

Once on board an MSC Cruises ship, you'll pay extra for most drinks, extra-charge restaurants, spa services, shore excursions, internet and a few other amenities — unless you've paid up for a more inclusive package.

When pricing cabins, MSC Cruises offers one of four main "experiences," each of which comes with different inclusions and varying price tags. The basic "Bella" experience includes your room, dining in the main restaurants and buffet, and access to all the included features of the ship, such as kids programs and theater shows.

Note that if you book the Bella experience, you cannot select a specific cabin. You can only choose between the broad categories of inside, ocean-view or balcony cabin, and a cabin is later assigned to you.

One step up is the more expensive "Fantastica" experience, which adds room service and breakfast delivered to your cabin, priority choice of dinner sittings, access to additional kids activities and classes, and more. At this level and above, you can pick a specific cabin when booking.

With the even pricier "Aurea" experience, you'll get complimentary access to the spa's thermal area, priority boarding and other perks. The Aurea experience also comes with access to My Choice dining and an exclusive sun deck area that on many ships features an exclusive bar and hot tubs.

Then there's the MSC Yacht Club experience, mentioned above, which is the ultimate in onboard living. Even with its higher price tag, the MSC Yacht Club still provides great value for its wide range of perks, such as unlimited drinks in all MSC Yacht Club areas, including premium spirits and minibar items.

How to book

If you're sure you know what sort of cabin you want, on which ship, on which itinerary — and about a dozen other things — you can head over to the MSC Cruises website to book directly.

That said, given the complexity of booking a cruise (there are a lot of decisions to make during the booking process: trust us) we recommend you use a seasoned travel agent who specializes in cruises. A good travel agent will quiz you about your interests, travel style and preferences, and steer you to the perfect cruise line, ship, itinerary and cabin for you. They also can help if something goes wrong just before, during or after your voyage.

If you're sure MSC Cruises is your line, look for a travel agent who specializes in trips with the brand. You want someone who knows all about the line's various cabin categories and, preferably, has done ship inspections to see them firsthand.

Whether you use a travel agent or not, make sure to maximize your purchase when paying for the cruise by using a credit card that offers extra points for travel purchases . This could be the Chase Sapphire Reserve , which offers 3 Ultimate Rewards points per dollar spent on travel and dining (excluding the annual $300 travel credit). There's also the Chase Sapphire Preferred Card , which earns 2 points per dollar spent on travel (and dining).

Bottom line

Long a major player in Europe, MSC Cruises is growing fast in North America with a lineup of big, new, amenity-filled ships.

If you're a megaresort lover, you'll feel right at home on MSC Cruises' new World, Meraviglia and Seaside Class vessels, which rival the biggest vessels of Royal Caribbean and Norwegian for their array of onboard amusements.

You'll also love their affordability. Among the world's biggest ships, they offer some of the lowest pricing. You'll be sharing your vacation with hordes of other people, of course — as many as 6,000 on some MSC Cruises vessels. However, even the biggest MSC Cruises ships have quiet nooks where you can escape the crowds.

Yet another giant new cruise ship takes to the sea

MSC Cruises' 171,598-ton MSC Meraviglia at the STX France shipyard in Saint-Nazaire, France.

SAINT-NAZAIRE, France — The cruise world welcomed another giant on Wednesday as MSC Cruises took delivery of its biggest ship ever, the 171,598-ton MSC Meraviglia .

With dozens of dignitaries including French President Emmanuel Macron looking on, officials at the STX France shipyard in Saint-Nazaire, France officially turned over the 19-deck-high, $1 billion vessel to MSC Cruises executives during a dockside ceremony. Several thousand workers at STX France and its sub-contractors have been building the ship for three years.

During the ceremony, Macron accompanied the young daughter of MSC Cruises executive chairman Pierfrancesco Vago, Zoe Africa Vago, onto a stage near Meraviglia's bow to cut a ceremonial blue ribbon. The cutting in turn released a celebratory bottle of champagne against the ship's hull. Macron later planted a kiss on the top of the young Vago's head.

Capable of holding up to 5,714 passengers, Meraviglia is the fourth largest cruise vessel ever built, smaller only than the three Oasis Class ships that Royal Caribbean has unveiled since 2009. More than 1,000 feet long and 214 feet wide, it has all the trappings of a major megaresort including an Aqua Park with three water slides, a splash pool and an adventurous "Himalayan Bridge" that allows passengers to cross the ship nearly 200 feet above the water.

Meraviglia also boasts a Miami Beach-inspired, 82-foot-long main pool that is part of what MSC says is the most generous poolside space at sea.

Preview: The hottest new cruise ships of 2017

Other notable features on Meraviglia include an amusement park area with race car simulators, a flight simulator, a 4D cinema and a full-sized bowling alley as well as an interior promenade covered by the largest LED dome at sea. There also is an aft pool that transforms into a dance area at night, a dedicated lounge for family activities, and exclusive Cirque du Soleil shows performed in a custom-made entertainment venue.

Twelve distinct dining venues include a sushi bar, teppanyaki restaurant, American-style steakhouse and a branch of the Italian chain Eataly.

The arrival of Meraviglia is a significant milestone for MSC. Designed for an international audience including North Americans, it's the first ship in the line's new Meraviglia Class, which includes multiple vessels that are at the core of ambitious expansion plans. A second ship in the series will debut in early 2019 with two larger "Meraviglia Plus" vessels coming in late 2019 and 2020.

“MSC Meraviglia ... represents the first realization of our long-term vision for further significant growth,” the MSC executive chairman, Pierfrancesco Vago, said at Wednesday's event.

The ceremony included the signing of a document firming MSC Cruises' plans to build another new series of giant vessels at the STX France shipyard at a cost of $4.5 billion euro. STX France CEO Laurent Castaing and MSC Cruises owner Gianluigi Aponte signed the document for the  previously announced  World Class ships as President Macron watched from just steps away. Macron then spoke for more than 20 minutes about the importance of the shipyard and shipbuilding to the economy of France, and he suggested there should be a review of a recent deal to sell a significant stake in STX France to Italian shipbuilding giant Fincantieri.

The ceremony included the ceremonial lowering of the STX France and French flags from the top of Meraviglia and the raising of the MSC Cruises flag as well as the flag of Malta, where the vessel is registered.

Macron toured the interior of Meraviglia before the ceremony. It was a homecoming of sorts for the newly elected French president as he was in attendance at the official coin ceremony in 2016 marking the ship's early construction phase. At the time, Macron was France's Minister of Economy, Industry and Digital Sector.

Still relatively unknown in North America, Switzerland-based MSC is a giant of cruising in Europe that has been in rapid expansion mode around the globe for several years. Currently operating 13 vessels, it's in the midst of adding at least 10 more ships by 2026. The company's passenger capacity is set to nearly triple over the coming decade.

Meraviglia is one of two new MSC vessels debuting this year. Also on the way is MSC Seaside , a slightly smaller ship that will sail out of Miami and be aimed more squarely at the North American market.

MSC Cruises boss: New ship for North America will turn heads

Meraviglia will be christened on June 3 in Le Havre, France before taking up residence in the Mediterranean. It'll operate seven-night voyages that include stops in France, Italy, Malta and Spain.

msc cruises largest ship

The ship appears like an oasis in the middle of the desert -- a mirage shrouded in early-morning fog rising off the water. The fog is the precursor to a hot afternoon in the Middle East sun, while the oasis comes in the form of MSC Cruises' brand-new ship MSC World Europa -- the line's biggest, most ambitious yet.

We made the 19.5-hour journey from wintery North America to sunny Doha, Qatar, to join MSC World Europa on its inaugural Middle East itineraries for a look at what makes MSC's latest-and-greatest ship tick -- and a preview of what North American cruisers can expect when sister ship MSC World America makes its debut in 2025.

MSC World Europa Offers a Glimpse of Things to Come on MSC World America

Enjoying a show in the Panorama Lounge aboard MSC World Europa (Photo: Aaron Saunders)

MSC Cruises named MSC World Europa in November 2022 after functioning as a floating hotel in Doha, Qatar for the 2022 World Cup, MSC World Europa is MSC's newest and largest cruise ship to-date. Powered by Liquefied Natural Gas (LNG) technology, it is the first in what will eventually be a class of four nearly-identical cruise ships -- including MSC World America , which makes its debut in the United States in 2024.

With its uniquely tapered bow and swooping architectural accents on its upper decks, MSC World Europa cuts a sleek profile. As we departed Doha, people came down to a quay near the cruise terminal to watch the massive ship -- the newest and largest in the Middle East -- depart. It's a scenario that repeats itself over successive days and ports. Locals here, it seems, can't wait to get a glimpse of the future of cruising.

Despite being an absolutely massive vessel capable of carrying 6,762 passengers, MSC World Europa disperses people well. During our first four days onboard, we found the bottlenecking present aboard the early Seaside-class ships is gone, and MSC World Europa's three-story central promenade is a great improvement over the two-story space found aboard the Meraviglia-class ships.

An interior promenade runs from the bow to midship stair towers along Decks 6. 7 and 8 aboard MSC World Europa (Photo: Aaron Saunders)

In fact, there's so much deck space and public rooms to move around that we've been pleasantly surprised by the entire experience. Evening performances in all lounges require reservations (which can be made through your interactive stateroom TV or the app), which ensures people are spread out each evening throughout three distinctive venues. It also prevents overcrowding -- once a show is sold out, reservations become impossible.

That's not to say it can't get crowded aboard MSC World Europa -- it can, and does, particularly around the usual suspects, like the champagne bar and the ship's dual buffets on Decks 18 and 19 aft. But there always seems to be a quiet spot to get away from it all -- or to get into the heart of the action, depending on your preference.

Another high point has been the service onboard, which has been friendly, efficient and professional. The crew are clearly proud to be working on MSC's latest-and-greatest, with many crewmembers having joined at the shipyard in Saint-Nazaire, France, while construction was still going on. It's also a welcome change from our recent MSC Meraviglia voyage, which had a slew of issues related to understaffing.

MSC World Europa Introduces a Host of Cool New Spaces Cruisers Will Love

Once cruise lines have been around for a while, they start to have signature spaces that are present on every ship. And to be sure, MSC World Europa has those spaces, but what is pleasantly surprising is the sheer number of new experiences MSC Cruises has introduced on MSC World Europa.

A standout win this voyage has been the Raj Polo Tea House on Deck 8. This quiet, cozy bar decorated in a colonial style offers both indoor and outdoor seating, along with a fabulous selection of teas, two of which -- an English Breakfast and Afternoon tea sourced from Sri Lanka -- are produced exclusively for MSC World Europa. They're just two of the 27 different varieties of tea on offer, so sink into one of the plush chairs in the afternoon with a book or come back in the evening for some tea-infused cocktails set to the soundtrack of an accompanying pianist for an experience so subdued and classy you'll think you've been transported back to the days of the Orient Steam Navigation Company.

The clubby Masters of the Sea pub on Deck 7 aboard MSC World Europa (Photo: Aaron Saunders)

Then there's Masters of the Sea, a thoroughly English pub on Deck 7 that wouldn't be out of place on a Cunard liner. Three brews are produced right onboard the ship in tanks that stand two stories tall as part of the Oceanic Craft Brewery: a Pils, a Bitter and a Wheat beer. Nine beers are on tap, and 33 types can be ordered by the bottle -- including seven from Italian craft brewer Baladin that will make you think twice about ever ordering a Peroni. We hope its beer selection will make its way Stateside to replace the ubiquitous "all-Heineken, all the time" mentality that was pervasive on a recent MSC Meraviglia trip.

The Gin Project aboard MSC World Europa (Photo: Aaron Saunders)

Right above the pub, connected by a spiral staircase reminiscent of that found in the libraries aboard Cunard's Queen Victoria and Queen Elizabeth is The Gin Project, a gin-themed cocktail bar that is absolutely packed every evening. The live music from the pub below wafts up through the open atrium space, making this the place to be for those who love a classic G&T made-to-order.

The Coffee Emporium on Deck 8 is a brand-new coffee concept for MSC, though the always-popular Jean-Philippe Chocolate and Café can still be found down on Deck 6. The Coffee Emporium is situated on the new World Promenade and has indoor and outdoor seating and tons of caffeinated options. And, like the Raj Polo Tea House, cookies seems to be on offer here all the time.

La Pescaderia aboard MSC World Europa specializes in fresh seafood, and offers indoor and outdoor seating. (Photo: Aaron Saunders)

Other new MSC firsts include a juice bar; a molecular mixology bar called Elixir where bitters and ingredients are made right onboard; a dedicated cigar-and-scotch enclave where leather couches and swirling smoke are de rigueur ; and two brand-new specialty restaurants: La Pescaderia, for fresh seafood selections; and the Chef's Garden Kitchen, an upscale venue featuring ingredients sourced from the ship's own onboard garden.

All of these new spaces break the mould when it comes to décor: gone is MSC's standard mirrors-and-marble from past vessels, replaced instead with décor that is as crisp as it is elegant -- one that effortlessly weaves from modern and futuristic to classic and cozy. Don't be surprised if you find yourself gawking at the light fixtures in one room or admiring the armchairs in the next.

Psst! MSC World Europa Has a Hidden Speakeasy

Psst! It's a secret Speakeasy Bar, hidden aboard MSC World Europa! (Photo: Aaron Saunders)

But perhaps the most exciting addition is one I'm not going to tell you how to get in, or where it is -- that's part of the fun -- but I'll tell you all about.

It's a hidden speakeasy bar that's accessible by invitation only -- that does not appear on any deck plan.

I am told it seats about 70 people and is routinely packed and it's one of the most creative, fun diversions I've ever experienced on any ship.

Decorated in what could be described as 1920's speakeasy meets 1940's World War II bunker, this clever little bar boasts its own dedicated entertainment -- a trio of talented musicians on the piano, vocals and sax -- and a menu of prohibition-themed cocktails that are presented with incredible flair. Expect to order more than you think you will -- you'll want to work your way down the menu, if only to see how each drink comes to your table.

The secret Speakeasy Bar aboard MSC World Europa even has its own dedicated entertainers. (Photo: Aaron Saunders)

Everything about this space has been cleverly branded and thought out, right down to the speakeasy's bathroom. I have no idea who came up with this concept, or how it ended up on the finished ship, but it’s a winner. I came expecting to stay for one hour and one cocktail; instead, I found myself there four hours and four cocktails later. I have no idea when the bar closes -- when I left at one in the morning, well past my bedtime, it was still hopping.

Drink packages don't work here, but you're not going to regret the 14-18 Euros these unique beverages cost. Make it an evening and enjoy the experience -- and head to the Zest Juice Bar on Deck 8 the following morning to detox!

The MSC Yacht Club: Still Cruising's Best Luxury Value

The Top Sail Lounge is the social heart of the MSC Yacht Club aboard MSC World Europa (Photo: Aaron Saunders)

Our journey has us ensconced in the MSC Yacht Club aboard MSC World Europa. MSC's luxury ship-within-a-ship concept continues to grow and mature, and here aboard MSC World Europa, it offers even greater value than ever before.

First introduced aboard MSC Fantasia in 2008, the MSC Yacht Club is an exclusive area of accommodations that spans the forward parts of Decks 15 to 22 aboard MSC World Europa. And while lavish suites are definitely available -- Owner's Suite 16002 comes in at a whopping 1,119 square feet, excluding its whirlpool tub and 516-square foot balcony -- we're in an entry-level Yacht Club Deluxe balcony suite that is plenty spacious, and just one step up from the arguable best value onboard: the MSC Yacht Club Interior Suite.

A Yacht Club Deluxe Balcony Suite aboard MSC World Europa (Photo: Aaron Saunders)

Yacht Club suites of every grade get the services of a butler and concierge, who ensure you never have to stand in line for, well, anything. Butlers even escort passengers down for shore excursions. Why wait on the motorcoach when you can have a cup of coffee in the gorgeous, two-story Top Sail Lounge on Deck 19 while you wait?

The design of the Top Sail Lounge and the dedicated Yacht Club Restaurant one deck above on Deck 20 largely mimic the great design introduced aboard the Seaside-class ships, but feel even more spacious here. Beverages are inclusive here except for top-shelf varieties, and everything from the cuisine to the service to the entertainment has an air of polish and sophistication about it that would not be out of place on the likes of luxury lines like Seabourn and Silversea.

The MSC Yacht Club Restaurant aboard MSC World Europa offers commanding views from Deck 20. (Photo: Aaron Saunders)

However, it's also family-friendly: we've seen families with kids and teenagers in the Yacht Club on our sailing, and no wonder: with private sun decks, outdoor dining, pools and whirlpools, multi-generational families are perfect for MSC Yacht Club -- those who want all the big-ship thrills like waterslides and bumper cars (yes, there are bumper cars onboard!) can find them.

A New Era for MSC Cruises

MSC World Europa alongside in Port Rashid, Dubai, UAE (Photo: Aaron Saunders)

MSC has been nothing if not creative with its ship design over the past few decades, churning out vessels that have their own unique look and feel that's wholly different from anything else in the cruise industry. MSC, however, might have struck gold with MSC World Europa in designing a big ship for thousands of people that still manages to dole out plenty of charm, fun, and even quiet -- something its previous vessels lacked.

When sister-ship MSC World America launches in 2025, North American passengers are in for a real treat. MSC World Europa pays homage to all things European; one wonders what innovations MSC has in store for the U.S. market.

MSC Cruises has announced the name of its second World class ship, which is its largest class of cruising vessels to date —  MSC World America.

The line, along with Chantiers de l’Atlantique shipyard, marked the official start of construction of the ship today by cutting the vessel’s first piece of steel.

As her name implies, MSC World America will be dedicated to the U.S. market when she enters service in 2025. She will be the first of MSC’s liquefied natural gas-powered ships to be deployed in North America.

“MSC World America is testament to our ambitious growth plans in the U.S. and the Caribbean and further solidifies MSC Cruises as a major player in the North American market with another of our largest, most glamorous ships coming to the region,” said Rubén A. Rodríguez, President of MSC Cruises USA. “In addition to delivering a state-of-the-art cruise experience, MSC World America exemplifies our commitment to sustainability with its advanced environmental technology.”

MSC World America will be the latest in a growing line of U.S. flagships dating back to the 2017 launch of MSC Seaside, whose design included increased outdoor space and new opportunities to be close to the sea.

The cruise brand then went on to deploy MSC Seashore from PortMiami in 2021, with MSC Seascape set to become the new U.S. flagship when she enters service later this year.

For the winter 2023-2024 season, MSC plans to have five ships in the United States:

  • MSC Meraviglia – Sailing her inaugural winter season from Brooklyn, New York to Bermuda—or Florida and The Bahamas—following an inaugural summer season that will have included sailings through Canada and New England.
  • MSC Seascape – Offering 7-night itineraries from PortMiami to the eastern and western Caribbean with calls at Ocean Cay MSC Marine Reserve in The Bahamas.
  • MSC Divina – Sailing from PortMiami with a variety of itineraries ranging from quick Ocean Cay MSC Marine Reserve getaways to extended sailings through Central and South America.
  • MSC Magnifica – Sailing short cruises from PortMiami to Key West and Ocean Cay MSC Marine Reserve.
  • MSC Seashore – Sailing from Port Canaveral and offering short cruises to The Bahamas along with longer western Caribbean itineraries, all of which offer calls at Ocean Cay MSC Marine Reserve.

Most elements on MSC World America will be similar to the first vessel in the class, MSC World Europa. Some aspects of her design and guest experience, though, will be tailored to appeal to guests from North America.

MSC World America will be MSC Cruises’ largest ship in the U.S., measuring 22 decks tall and over 150 feet wide. She will include 2,600 guest cabins and feature 420,000 square feet of public space.

Guide to MSC Cruise Ships: Newest to Oldest

Share this post:

Every time we turn around, it seems like there’s a new MSC cruise ship to write about and explore. It’s no surprise, then, that MSC Cruises is the world’s fastest growing cruise line. 11 new MSC cruise ships have launched in the last ten years alone.

As a result of its massive growth, MSC Cruises is now the world’s third largest cruise brand by fleet passenger capacity, trailing just behind Carnival Cruise Line and Royal Caribbean International . To give you a better idea of the ship classes and individual vessels within the cruise brand, we’ve put together this helpful guide to MSC Cruise ships.

How many MSC Cruises ships are there?

There are currently 22 ships in operation under the MSC Cruises brand. The line also has three additional ships on order including the second World class vessel MSC World America, set to debut in 2025.

Since MSC Cruises is a European brand, the majority of its ships sail in Europe. However, the line does have some vessels in North and South America.

MSC Seascape Cruise Ship Scorecard Review

Which MSC ships currently sail from the U.S.? For the winter 2023-2024 season, five vessels from the line will be sailing from the United States: MSC Seascape, Divina, and Magnifica from Miami; MSC Meraviglia from Brooklyn; and MSC Seashore from Port Canaveral .

What are the sizes of MSC Cruises’ ships?

MSC Cruises’ ships vary wildly in size, ranging from 58,174 gross tons to 215,863 gross tons. The MSC ship that’s the smallest is also the oldest in its current fleet, MSC Armonia. The largest MSC Cruises ship is the first member of its new World class — MSC World Europa.

Most MSC cruise ships range from around 130,000 to 180,000 gross tons, carrying around 3,000 to 4,500 guests each (based on double occupancy).

MSC Cruise Ship Classes

MSC Cruises has six cruise ship classes in its current fleet, plus two sub-classes. Here’s a brief overview of each.

Lirica Class

The Lirica class (or Mistral class) is the current oldest and smallest class in the MSC Cruises fleet. The two oldest ships in the class, MSC Armonia and MSC Sinfonia, were originally built and sailed for Festival Cruises before the company went bankrupt.

After purchasing the two ships, MSC Cruises added two additional vessels to its newly-created Lirica class: MSC Lirica (the line’s first newbuild) and MSC Opera.

Guide to MSC Cruise Ships: Newest to Oldest

Musica Class

The Musica class came shortly after the final ship in the Lirica class, kicking off with MSC Musica in 2006. MSC Orchestra followed in 2007, followed by MSC Poesia and MSC Magnifica. The vessels are 25 to 30 thousand gross tons larger than those in the Lirica class, but are still quite small compared to MSC’s newer cruise ships.

Fantasia Class

MSC Fantasia debuted in 2008 as the lead ship in MSC Cruises’ Fantasia class. Less than a year later, MSC Splendida followed. The class was rounded out with MSC Divina and MSC Preziosa.

The Fantasia class is where MSC’s ships really started to get large. They feature more amenities than previous vessels like waterslides, sports courts, and more swimming pools and dining options.

Meraviglia Class

After four years with no new MSC cruise ships, MSC Meraviglia splashed onto the scene in 2017 as the first vessel in her namesake Meraviglia class. At just over 171,000 gross tons, Meraviglia is over 30,000 gross tons larger than MSC Divina and Preziosa. In fact, she was the sixth largest cruise ship in the world at the time of her debut.

Caribbean vs. Bahamas Cruise What's Better

A second Meraviglia ship, MSC Bellissima, debuted in 2019. The vessels each feature a large water park, over ten dining venues, large swimming pools, and a long indoor promenade with an LED “sky.”

Meraviglia Plus Class

The Meraviglia Plus class is a subclass and evolution of the Meraviglia class. It includes three vessels that are about 10,000 gross tons larger than the Meraviglia ships — starting with MSC Grandiosa which launched in 2019.

The other two ships, MSC Virtuosa and MSC Euribia, debuted in 2021 and 2023, respectively. They feature large water parks, racecar and flight simulators, massive pool decks, and an abundance of specialty restaurants.

Seaside Class

Alongside the Meraviglia class, the Seaside class launched in 2017 with the debut of MSC Seaside. Like its name would suggest, the purpose of the Seaside class is to bring guests outdoors and as close to the ocean in as many ways as possible.

A second Seaside class ship, MSC Seaview, debuted in 2018. The Seaside class’ iconic feature is its Miami-inspired aft, which includes cabins with large balconies, glass-walled elevators, and a pool area with a suspended glass-floored bridge above it.

Sales Open for MSC Seascape's Inaugural Season

Seaside EVO Class

The Seaside EVO class is a subclass and evolution of the Seaside class. It includes two ships (MSC Seashore and MSC Seascape) that are about 17,000 gross tons larger than the original Seaside class ships (which are 153,516 gross tons each).

The Seaside EVO ships feature an expanded aft pool deck, larger kids’ spaces, an expanded MSC Yacht Club, and some layout changes.

World Class

The World class is MSC’s answer to Royal Caribbean’s Oasis class. While a bit smaller than the Oasis ships at around 215 thousand gross tons (compared to Royal’s 226-236 thousand gross tons), it’s obvious that the World class takes some cues from the massive Oasis class with features like an 11-story dry slide and an open-air interior space similar to Royal Caribbean’s Boardwalk neighborhood.

The first World class ship, MSC World Europa, debuted in 2022. The second, MSC World America, is scheduled to launch in 2025. Two additional World class ships are currently on order.

MSC Fantasia

MSC Fantasia debuted in December 2008 as the first vessel in MSC Cruises’ Fantasia class. The vessel holds 3,274 guests based on double occupancy and is 137,936 gross tons. The launch of Fantasia ushered in a new generation of larger cruise ships for MSC, becoming the line’s largest cruise vessel when she was delivered. Additionally, MSC Fantasia was the first ship to feature the MSC Yacht Club, an exclusive ship-within-a-ship complex with higher-end accommodations and its own restaurant and pool area.

The 92,627 gross ton MSC Poesia is the third vessel in MSC’s Musica class. It debuted in April 2008 and can hold 2,550 guests at double occupancy. MSC Opera is part of MSC Cruises’ current smallest class of ships, the Lirica class, coming in at just 65,591 gross tons. Opera debuted in June 2004 and is the fourth and final ship in that class. She holds 2,150 guests at double occupancy and features a spa with a thermal suite and a spray park for little kids.

Named for the class that she’s the third member of, MSC Lirica launched in March 2003. After an extensive renovation that included lengthening of the ship, Lirica comes in at 65,591 gross tons and can hold 1,984 guests at double occupancy. The vessel was MSC Cruises’ first newbuild, as previous ships had been purchased from other companies.

MSC Sinfonia

MSC Sinfonia entered service with MSC Cruises in March 2005; she originally debuted in 2002 as MS European Stars for the now-defunct line Festival Cruises. The vessel holds 2,087 guests based on double occupancy and comes in at 65,542 gross tons after an extensive renovation — including lengthening — in 2015. Sinfonia was the last ship built for Festival Cruises before it went bankrupt in 2004.

MSC Armonia

MSC Armonia is the oldest ship in the current MSC Cruises fleet with a guest capacity of 2,087 and a size of 58,174 gross tons. The ship was originally built in 2001 for Festival Cruises as MS European Vision, but was sold to MSC and began sailing with the line in 2004.

Explora Journeys Makes Sustainability Commitment

Explora Journeys offers a more intimate and laid-back cruise experience. The line’s first ship, Explora I, comes in at just 63,900 gross tons with a capacity for 922 guests.

Explora I set sail on her maiden voyage in August 2023. A second ship, Explora II, is currently under construction. Further, four additional Explora Journeys ships are on order.

By CNT Editors

It’s inevitable: every spring when we pull together the Hot List, our annual collection of the world’s best new hotels, restaurants, and cruise ships, a staffer remarks that this latest iteration has got to be the best one ever. After a year’s worth of travelling the globe – to stay the night at a converted farmhouse in the middle of an olive grove outside Marrakech or sail aboard a beloved cruise line’s inaugural Antarctic voyage – it’s easy to see why we get attached. But this year’s Hot List, our 28th edition, might really be the best one ever. It’s certainly our most diverse, featuring not only a hotel suite that was once Winston Churchill’s office, but also the world’s largest cruise ship and restaurants from Cape Town to Bali . We were surprised and inspired by this year’s honorees, and we know you will be too. These are the Hot List cruise winners for 2024.

Celebrity Ascent, Celebrity Cruises

Celebrity is a premium big-ship cruise brand, focusing on exquisite dining, cutting-edge amenities, Instagram-worthy public spaces chock-full of bespoke art pieces, and avant-garde onboard entertainment. The ship makes passengers feel, in a word, glamorous. Celebrity Ascent’s sumptuously designed interiors are flooded with natural light and evoke an air of playful sophistication that makes a week on board an escape worth cherishing. Passengers may find themselves longing to return for just one more succulent crab claw at Raw on 5, one more martini poured by bottle-spinning bartenders in the Martini Bar, or one more dazzling, acrobatic stage show, in the days following their farewells to this beautiful ship. From around £574 per person for a seven-night sailing. Scott Laird

Emerald Sakara, Emerald Cruises

Now with two oceangoing vessels joining Emerald’s more established fleet of nine river-dedicated “Star-Ships,” the decade-old cruise line is extending a brand built on unpretentious luxury to more corners of the world. Christened last August , the 100-guest superyacht, Sakara, is a near twin to Azzurra, which in 2022 ushered in a new era for Emerald by taking to the high seas. Sakara, like its sister, delightfully blurs the line between the luxury and ultra-luxury cruise categories, offering attentive service, gourmet cuisine, tasteful decor, and an eclectic slate of activities at a price point friendly to more budgets. The cherry on top with both superyachts is a slew of perks atypical of small-ship sailing, ranging from an impressively comprehensive spa to a marina platform well equipped for more fun in the sun. Despite having so much good stuff, each vessel is remarkably spacious. Getting a sense of being on a private yacht is easy like Sunday morning. Sakara is homeported in the Caribbean and the Mediterranean through at least March 2026; Azzurra, too, in addition to the Middle East, Kenya, and the Seychelles . Emerald’s river operations are based in Europe and Southeast Asia. (Note that a third ship, the Kaia, has just been announced by the cruise line; it debuts in April 2026, and, for all the early birds, it is now open for bookings.) From around £3,112. Explora I, Explora Journeys

With a showpiece lobby bar, upscale restaurants, and a sultry infinity pool, Explora Journeys' relaxed luxury-resort-at-sea vibe strikes the perfect balance on Explora I. Launched in August 2023, the all-inclusive ship is disarmingly beautiful. A sleek navy blue exterior cocoons 461 suites, all with deep balconies, walk-in closets, and marble bathrooms. There is free-flowing Champagne, 7,500 square feet of wellness space, and 18 drinking and dining venues. From Emporium Marketplace, with its decadent raw bar, to pan-Asian restaurant Sakura, the dining on Explora I is sensational. Marble & Co. Grill is an intimate steakhouse where ageing meats hang in temperature-controlled cabinets. At Anthology, the ship's only supplementary restaurant, guest chefs – such as Claude Le Tohic of San Francisco's O' by Claude Le Tohic – curate sublime tasting menus. There's more: The only Rolex boutique at sea, huge hot tubs, and a shore program that sees some land experiences developed in partnership with revered explorer Mike Horn. From around £564 per person per night. Kerry Spencer

Icon of the Seas, Royal Caribbean International

Aboard the Icon, you can really get lost. The behemoth is just plain big, with a capacity for nearly 8,000 when combining passengers and crew across 20 decks and 250,800 gross tons. Two and a half laps around the ship’s jogging track, a particular highlight onboard, and you’ve run a mile. So one can find themselves in need of a map – forgetting your sunscreen , for example, in your cabin is a bit of a chore depending on how far you’ve made it. But the abundance of things to do is also narcotic, and you feel a bit like a lotus-eater attempting to navigate it all while keeping your head. Amid the relentless entertainment, not to be missed are the top-notch performers present everywhere, from the Olympic-level aquatics show that you can watch from the windows of the speciality seafood restaurant should seating be elusive (it often is) to the cafeteria, where crewmembers dressed as food items sing songs reminding (commanding, actually, which is fabulous) passengers to wash their hands at sinks near the entrance. If you wish to enjoy the largest waterpark at sea, by the way, do what I did not and pack a swimsuit without zippers. From around £1,818 . Charlie Hobbs

MSC Euribia, MSC Cruises

Looking at a row of cruise ships in port, you'll spot MSC Euribia right away. She's covered bow to stern by an ocean-themed mural by German artist Alex Flämig that bears the hashtag #SaveTheSeas nodding to the MSC's dedication to sustainable cruising: the Italian cruise line aims to be net-zero by 2050. MSC Euribia brings it one step closer to that goal, as it's the fleet's greenest ship yet, operating on liquified natural gas (LNG) and running advanced water and waste treatment systems onboard. But enough with the technical details – this mega-ship is packed with activities and entertainment, with 10 restaurants, 21 bars, five pools, two performance venues, and a bevvy of family-friendly amenities, like an F1 simulator, a waterpark, and a bowling alley. More adult-oriented highlights include the MSC Aurea Spa, with a thermal suite outfitted with thalassotherapy pools, a salt cave, and a snow room, as well as the Helios Wine Maker bar for wine tastings. Itineraries from around £420. Stefanie Waldek

Norwegian Viva, Norwegian Cruise Line

The second entry in Norwegian Cruise Line’s new Prima Class, Viva is like an Irish twin of older sister Prima. There’s the same stateroom count at 1,586, done in pristine and pleasing neutrals, as well as familiarly tricked-out amenities like the zippy 1,400-foot go-kart racing track that undulates over-the-top decks. Importantly, the Ocean Walk, which my colleague Mercedes Bleth adored aboard the Prima, remains. But round two afforded the premier name in large-ship cruising a chance to tweak and perfect, with an influx of seating options both in the ship’s complimentary dining hall as well as on its myriad decks. Across from the signature “zero-waste” Metropolitan Bar, where yummy drinks are whipped up from the ship’s food waste (I particularly enjoy a buttery Croissant Mai-Tai, for which hardening pastries are boiled down into sweetening syrup; the same is done with banana peels) is an interactive piece of digital art 52 feet wide that sees butterflies flit beside passersby. Breezy class all around. From around £791. Charlie Hobbs

Oceania Vista, Oceania Cruises

Vista, Oceania’s first new ship in more than a decade and the first of its Allura Class, debuted with small but mighty upgrades to its previous ships: better stabilisers for a smoother sailing experience; stronger Wi-Fi; lighting and architecture designed to make the ship’s common spaces look and feel roomier; a resort-like pool deck; and balconies in every cabin. The real star of the show, though, is the food and beverage experience – Vista’s culinary program delivers on its promise of top-quality venues you’ll want to make the rounds at. New to the lineup are Ember, a steakhouse with decor straight out of Napa Valley , and Aquamar Kitchen, serving up lighter fare that doesn’t skimp on taste. Celebrate a birthday, an anniversary, or a just-because occasion with the Cellar Masters Wine Luncheon, a five-course meal and wine pairing. And don’t miss the elaborate sea day brunch, where towers of lobster, crab, and caviar await. Of course, the ship is just one destination. This year, Vista is splitting time between the Mediterranean and the Caribbean; next year, it will venture farther into Europe with ports of call like Istanbul , Stockholm, and Klaipeda, Lithuania. Its sister ship, Allura, sets sail in 2025. From around £2,182. Madison Flager

Scenic Eclipse II, Scenic Luxury Cruises and Tours

The eagerly awaited Scenic Eclipse II is the new and improved version of Scenic's first expedition vessel, Scenic Eclipse. Dubbed "discovery yachts" for their sleek look and top-tier service, the sisters are nearly identical, with most changes so subtle that most guests might not even notice them, such as the slight enlargement of the steam room in the spa. But a big difference can be found on deck 10, where a plunge pool with jets for simulated lap swimming has taken the place of two hot tubs – and there's a new Sky Bar up here. Otherwise, Scenic Eclipse II has the same beloved amenities of its sister, most notably 10 exceptional dining experiences, from a sushi bar to a French restaurant with an attached Champagne bar; a 5,920-square-foot spa; two helicopters; and a submersible. Capable of sailing all over the world, including the polar regions, Scenic Eclipse II has itineraries for every type of traveller. From around £6,025. Stefanie Waldek

Seabourn Pursuit, Seabourn Cruise Line

Pursuit is a small, “yacht-like” expedition ship with a distinct green exterior whose destinations range from Antarctica to warmer climes like the Kimberley in Australia. The decadent cabins, bigger than some standard hotel rooms, feel spacious and relaxing, complete with all the subtle touches that make you feel immediately at home. You can hang your evening attire in the walk-in closet and dry your wet swimwear – or damp Arctic expedition gear – in the built-in warming compartment; have sunrise breakfasts or sunset cocktails mixed at the in-room wet bar on your private balcony; and sleep in a plush, queen-sized bed. But what truly sets this cruise apart is the attentive and personable staff who quickly learn your name and personal preferences, providing VIP treatment throughout the journey. From around £8,729. Seven Seas Grandeur, Regent Seven Seas Cruises

Ports in the Caribbean, the Greek islands , and the Riviera might be the draw, but the all-inclusive luxury line Regent Seven Seas Cruises produces ships that have travellers looking forward to those days at sea, as its sixth offering, Grandeur, further proves. All of the 372 suites, which start at a roomy 307 square feet, are decorated in calming neutral blues and beige, and feature furnished balconies; most have L'Occitane bubbles for the marble tub. Quiet comfort can also be had in the Serene Spa & Wellness outdoor lounge area, following a massage on a quartz crystal bed that mimics the feel of warm sand. Cravings for a porterhouse or a vegetarian Salisbury steak can be sated by Prime 7, with other venues serving speciality pan-Asian cuisine, French fare, ample buffets, and Italian offerings. Mainstay Compass Rose has been reimagined as a light, airy space where diners breakfast under playfully elegant pillars that resemble crystal trees. Grandeur's whimsy extends to its reception area, where guests can check out Journey in Jewels, the Fabergé egg made specifically for the vessel, where it will remain for the rest of its jewelled ovoid days. The maximum number of 744 guests ensures unhurried service and uncrowded environs as you recover from a sunny day of swimming with Caribbean pigs. From around £3798. Alexandra Sanidad

Silver Nova, Silversea Cruises

A voyage on Silversea’s latest ship, Silver Nova, is one of taste and style. With expansive glass features throughout each of the 11 decks, and an ocean-facing saltwater swimming pool , the ship’s unique asymmetrical design leaves room for adults to run and play (with swank, of course). The Nova’s reimagined culinary experience, SALT (Sea and Land Taste), is the first large-scale, regional restaurant at sea, and acts as an invitation to guests to experience more than an excursion. While initially introduced on Silver Moon, the Nova’s SALT program includes SALT Lab by day: an intimate cooking class with highly acclaimed chefs and regional cuisine recipes inspired by the next destination. With one nightly seating, SALT Chef's Table offers an exclusive and creatively interactive dining experience. It’s all very intimate – as chefs showcase the art of their crafts firsthand, guests peek into a new culture and place before even disembarking. From around £2465. Jessica Chapel

An aerial of a cruise ship in a river.

Viking Aton, Viking River Cruises

In the style of all Viking ships, the Rottet Studio – designed Aton is intended for comfortable and thought-provoking exploration – just look to the book-filled shelves in the cabins, curated by London’s Heywood Hill library, and the revolving door of on-board lecturers (on my trip, an English curator spoke about the evolving depictions of Egypt in 1900s popular art). It should be no surprise that in a destination as rich and storied as Egypt ’s Nile, where the Aton is permanently based, the guides set apart what may read as a quintessential itinerary. On the Pharaohs & Pyramids journey, which takes travellers from the Valley of the Kings, where King Tut lies, to the Great Pyramid of Giza and well beyond over 12 days, esteemed Egyptologists oscillate from translating hieroglyphics on temple walls in real-time to shepherding travellers through modern night markets with endless fervour. On this ship it isn’t just what you see but how much you listen – and the team here, predominantly Egyptian, has much to say. These days, travellers crave perspective-altering experiences more than ever; get on the Aton, and you’ll get once-in-a-lifetime access (until that is, your next Aton sailing). From around £4849. Resilient Lady, Virgin Voyages

Stepping onto Resilient Lady feels a bit like heading to summer camp. The massive vessel is like a giant playground for adults, which is why it draws a fun-loving crowd. Theme night parties, a nostalgic arcade room, plenty of board games, and basketball courts are just a few of the seemingly limitless onboard activities. Compared with its sister ships, the newest Virgin Voyages addition includes upgraded onboard entertainment and exciting new ports of call like the Greek Islands, Bali, and Mumbai . Most of the shows on this specific ship are new to the line, such as Persephone, an interactive performance developed in collaboration with famed Brooklyn nightclub House of Yes, and Another Rose, an immersive dinner experience. Dining options are abundant on the ship – 20-plus to be exact – and all of them are included with every passenger ticket. Plus, you can’t miss out on a visit to the several different sauna experiences in the Thermal Suite inside the Redemption Spa. From around £1616 . Rachel Dube

World Voyager, Atlas Ocean Voyages

There are superbly comfortable spaces and floor-to-ceiling windows aplenty on World Voyager, the latest vessel from Atlas Ocean Voyages. On an Antarctica expedition, you might watch turquoise icebergs float by from the sauna or the spa’s relaxation room, with its heated loungers perfectly positioned in front of a wall of glass. Back in your cosy stateroom, Champagne and strawberries await, as do the views from a Juliet or walkout balcony. The look throughout the 100 cabins and public spaces is Scandinavian modern, thanks to blond woods, marble floors, plush carpets in geometric patterns, and curvaceous furniture draped in velvety fabrics. In the elegant dining room, the focus is on international cuisine with a farm-to-table slant – think mushroom risotto and smoked duck with chargrilled vegetables. Meanwhile, the multipage cocktail menu beckons guests to a pair of spacious lounges. Blending yacht-style elegance and boutique-resort intimacy, this is a ship where you can make new friends easily but also retreat to a favourite spot to enjoy high tea in peaceful solitude while awaiting details from the crew on the adventures that lie ahead. From around £1495. Celeste Moure

MSC Cruises' World America Will Feature Largest Kids Club

msc cruises world america cruise ship kids club doremiland

Photo: MSC Cruises

When MSC Cruises' next World-Class ship debuts next spring it will feature the largest Doremiland kid's club in the MSC Cruises fleet, spanning some 10,000 square feet across seven different spaces. Highlighting the vast array of children's activities will be the first LEGO-themed parade at sea and a LEGO family game show.

"We set ourselves the goal to create the most exceptional kids and family offering at sea with MSC World America," said Steve Leatham, head of entertainment for MSC Cruises. "Our aim is to give our younger guests the freedom to express their creativity, play, socialize, and explore with amazing spaces and programs that have to be seen to be believed."

All-new (or enhanced) spaces and activities for kids and their families will include:

Largest-ever Doremiland: Spanning more than 10,000 square feet, MSC World America's Doremiland will offer seven rooms dedicated to different age groups from 0 to 17 years old. The club will be open all day long, from 9 a.m. until midnight, for the duration of each voyage. Baby services are offered in collaboration with Chicco (a global baby brand).

LEGO Parade: The parade, which will feature LEGO characters, will march through the ship from Family Adventura to the World Promenade once per cruise.

LEGO Family Zone: A brand-new kids' club area for "master builders and bricks enthusiasts" where parents and their children will be able to play together.

LEGO Game Show: Once per cruise, families will have the opportunity to come together for a team challenge in which parents and children compete as Master Builders. The competition will feature timed challenges and "unexpected twists."

Boxes Family Game Show: A family competition in which each mystery box contains a blind challenge to beat in order to win prizes.

Doremix Family Disco: A dance competition in which parents and children will dance together to hit music and original MSC Cruises songs, vying for the title of best dancers of the night.

Star Shooters: An adventure course located in the Sportplex created specifically for teenagers in which participants must hit targets and rack up points to win.

The Harbour: At the heart of the Family Aventura district will be this outdoor park where families can come together to engage in activities – like a ropes course and the previously-announced Cliffhanger, enjoy family-friendly food, and soak up the sun.
