The Lar valley lies in the Northeast of Tehran on the western slopes of Damavand and is considered a heaven for a cycling tour to Iran. Its great biodiversity has made it one of the major national parks of Iran. It’s the habitat of many animals and plants, especially some rare and endemic species of Iran. The trail starts from the SW face of Damavand toward the north at 3000 m elevation.

By decreasing the elevation toward the west along a minor valley ending in Lar valley, the route comes alongside the Lar river. You will have to pass through the river several times. Spending two nights with nomads and exploring the Lar valley, we will return to the city after 2 days of being in Mother Earth’s wild from Garmabdar route.

Biking Routes in the North of Iran

Imagine a whole forest covered by clouds, then picture yourself traversing the forest in cool mist. Well, in the northern part of Iran, there is a biking route called the Cloud Forest. It encompasses the route from Shahroud to Aliabad. Savad Kuh is another location for a biking adventure, the spiral mountain roads around it are surrounded by trees. So feel free to fill up your lungs with fresh mountain air while cycling. It can be physically challenging but completely worth it. You will face the scenery of heaven in the Lafoor forest. The Firuz Kooh route starts from Nimrud village; you bypass Ziyar village on Haraz road. If you are up for discovery, this is recommended. If you opt for a long-distance route with a mesmerizing landscape, the Kojur route would satisfy you. You will reach the Kelardasht route, where you ride through the woods and continue to finish your trip along the Caspian Sea.

Last but not least is the Caspian Sea Route. You ride along the Caspian coast in the city of Astara that reaches Gorgan province. Biking tours along the roads in Iran

Cycling from Marnan Bridge to Shahrestan bridge, you will pass historical bridges in Isfahan called Si-o-Se Pol and Khaju, a wholly different experience far exceeding your expectations. Another option is to cycle in a forested park in Isfahan called Nazhvan Forest Park. This park is asphalted and is a popular recreational resort for the locals. Cycling in the Lavasanat district in the Tehran countryside is 40 kilometers outside the capital. It is a mountainous region and a residential area. The good news is that Adventure Iran has an office in the center of Lavasan equipped with bicycles. Shemshak to Dizin cycling is another option. The road takes you to a mountain pass which then connects you to another valley. You can cycle on this scenic road and have a spectacular view of two famous peaks in central Alborz.

There is Varamin, which passes by Shahre-Rey. In this city, you could visit the relief of Fath Ali Shah, Toghrol Tower, Bahram Fire Temple, and other monuments of the Sassanid era. From Varamin to Qasr Bahram Caravanserai, you can bike. It is worth the challenge because there you can have an astronomy program.

In the west of Sepidan city in the downhill of the Zagros Mountains and in the vicinity of a village called Margon, there is a waterfall with the same name, where water comes from the heart of the Earth.

Project Description

Cycling in iran, damavand (5671 meters/18606 feet) is the highest mt in iran, the highest volcano in asia and the highest conical peak in the world..

Among the professional mountaineers, this Mount is considered as the stairs of Himalaya. Damavand has a number of natural glaciers, among those the biggest and longest glacier of Iran is located in this mountain.

The volcano last erupted about 7300 years ago, but it still emits dangerous sulphuric fumes strong enough to kill animals and human being. So, it is suggested for the first-timers to use a guide.

Being located in central Alborz chain, there are 16 routes up Damavand but the peak is reachable though 4 main routes.

• North east face

Among those, the most normal and less technical route goes through the South face known as the classic route. This route is taken by the majority of mountaineers.

However, shelters are available along all the routes, the biggest and most equipped one is located in Bargah Sevom (Camp 3) along the South route.

The Na’n to Yazd route is one of those two-lane roads that are once more clogged with trucks. Thankfully, it has a shoulder the entire way. There is a turnoff to a preferred and much calmer route to Qaderabad 20 kilometers south of Safashar. Check your map or GPS because the turnoff is unclear or well-signposted. You may enjoy some lovely mountain views along the route as you travel the road to Qaderabad. You will return to the main roadway once again just north of the Pasargad archaeological site.

You’ll notice a “No Motorcycles” sign on the roadway farther south. This portends the approaching of a lengthy tunnel. Cycling through it is not advised, but fortunately, a great ancient road goes around it.  You will travel a few kilometers after re-joining the roadway before arriving at Sadatshar. A pleasant detour through the valley may be taken from here instead of continuing on the busy roadway. As you move closer to the Persepolis region, this ancient Shiraz road becomes more and crowded.

Would you want to go to the tombs north of Persepolis? Visitors coming from the north should turn right at the intersection just before Persepolis because these are not indicated there. At the crossroads itself are the smaller graves. One of the few locations that offer camping is the Persepolis Tourist Hotel, although you may prefer the reasonably priced bungalow-style accommodations in a lush garden.

The accommodations include a small kitchen, living area, and private bedroom. The settlement of Marvdasht is situated a few kilometers south of Persepolis. After passing it, continue on Highway 65 all the way toward Shiraz. It becomes more crowded as you approach closer to Shiraz. There is a decent shoulder where you may ride while admiring the stunning surroundings.

Cycling in Lavasanat

day 1: Tehran

Glolestan Palace, Iran National Museum and Tehran’s Bazaar. Arrive at IKA International Airport, we will meet you, and transfer you to your hotel. You will have time to rest and relax before our morning tour of Tehran begins. To avoid heavy traffic, taking the subway is the best way to visit Tehran. We take the subway and charter taxis so that we make most of the day and visit as many sites as possible.

We will visit Tabatabai and Boroojerdi Houses and Agha bozorg Mosque. Overnight in Kashan.

Day 04: Abouzeidabad and Matin Abad: (2nd-day cycling)

Sightseeing: Fin Garden and Dasht-e Kavir.

Visiting the traditional bathhouse and Fin garden (UNESCO site) and head to Dasht-e Kavir by bicycle.

Passing Abouzidabad desert village and visit the caravanserai. Continue cycling towards Matin Abad. Stay overnight at Matin Abad in an Eco camp.

Day 5: Abyaneh (3rd day cycling)

Abyaneh Village Early morning walk in the desert and continue cycling toward the historical village of Abyaneh.

Meet and greet the villagers with special dress and explore the village. Stay Overnight in Abyaneh.

Day 06 :Isfahan (4th-day cycling)

Excursion in the city and Visiting Si-o-Se Pol. Start cycling early morning to Isfahan. Passing Natanz on the road. Mid-way drive to Isfahan. We will visit Si-o-Se Pol Bridge, and explore the city.

Stay overnight in Isfahan.

Day7: Isfahan

Imam Mosque, Sheikh Lotfollah’s Mosque, Bazaar and Vank Cathedral Church.

As Islamic World’s Cultural Capital, and is home to many historical attractions, Isfahan receives annually a large number of domestic and incoming tourists, especially during the New Year festival Known as Nowruz.

Isfahan has many historical monuments some of which are included in UNESCO’s world heritage list and we will show you step by step.

Today is Non-cycling day. First, you will visit Imam`s mosque and Sheikh Lotfollah mosque.

Then, to the north the expansive bazaar where we can see artisans crafting metal works you will visit the Armenian Vank cathedral church, and enjoy it.

Overnight in Isfahan.

Day 08: Qehi and Varzaneh desert (5th-day cycling)

Sightseeing : Qehi village, mosque, and underground water reservoir.

Cycling toward the desert of Varzaneh. En route a short stop in the spectacular historical village of Qehi and visit the old houses, mosque, and underground water reservoir. Continue Bicycling to Varzaneh town. Stay overnight in Varzaneh.

Day 09: Yazd (6th-day cycling)

Meybod historical town. Meybod is a city in Yazd province. This city has a few thousand years of history.

This city is considered to be the second urban and commercial center of Yazd province and due to its valuable historical structure, most of the city has been registered on the list of Iran’s historical monuments.

We would have short sightseeing in the desert and start cycling toward Yazd city. En route visit Meybod historical town.

Then, we drive to Yazd. Overnight in Yazd.

Day 10: Yazd city tour

Amir Chakhmagh , Zoroastrian Fire Temple and Museum of Water. Yazd city, the second biggest Mud-Brick city in the world remains from ancient times. The first Iranian city registered in the UNESCO WORLD HERITAGE.

The city has acquired many titles throughout centuries: the City of World’s Wind-Catchers, The City of Bicycles, The City of Sweets, The City of Qanats, and The City of Fire and Sun.

Our tour goes on by visiting the historical districts of the city including Amir Chakhmagh Square, Zoroastrian’s Fire Temple, and The Museum of Water.

A touch of local life will be an enticing experience. Late afternoon we drive to Taft town. Overnight stay at a local house.

Day 11: Abarkuh (7th day cycling)

Villages and Landscape. Full-day cycling tour through the mountain road. Crossing a couple of interesting villages and spectacular landscapes. Stay overnight at a local house.

Day 12: Eghlid (8th day cycling)

The beautiful Nature of Eghlid. Continue cycling toward the Nomadic regions of the Zagros mountain range and enjoy the landscapes. Stay overnight at a local house.

Day 13: Pasargadae (9th day cycling)

Tomb of Cyrus the Great. Walk around Elid village and continue cycling from Eqlid toward Pasargadae, visiting the tomb of Cyrus the Great.

Then, a full-day cycling through the mountain road. Stay overnight stay at a traditional guest house.

Day 14: Persepolis , Necropolis, and Shiraz (Non-cycling day)

Sightseeing : Persepolis, and Necropolis (Naghsh-e Rostam).

In the morning we drive to Shiraz. We will visit Persepolis and Necropolis. Persepolis was the capital of the Achaemenid Empire.

It was built on an immense half-artificial, half-natural terrace, where the king of kings created an impressive palace complex inspired by Mesopotamian models.

The importance and quality of the monumental ruins make it a unique archaeological site.

It seems that Darius planned this impressive complex of palaces not only as the seat of government but also, and primarily, as a showplace and a spectacular center for the receptions and festivals of the Achaemenid kings and their empire such as Nowruz (New Year, March 21st).

The next is Necropolis(Naghsh-e Rostam). Opposite Rahmat mountain, ten minutes drive to the north, proudly stands the Necropolis, the magnificent burial place of Achaemenid kings.

The site also provides seven bas-reliefs dating back to Elamite and Sassanid periods. Stay overnight in Shiraz

Day 15: Shiraz – Departure

Day 1- Welcome to Iran

Upon your arrival at IKA airport, our guide will warmly welcome you and you will be transferred to your hotel. On this day, you will have the opportunity to check your belongings and rest, and if you wish, visit the sights of the beautiful city of Tehran. (This program is designed with the assumption that your flight will arrive on the morning of the first day.)

Day 2- Arrival and Neor Lake Camp

Your journey commences with a direct transfer to Neor Lake , traversing the breathtaking Caspian Sea shore road. Neor Lake is nestled at the border of the majestic Alborz Mountains, approximately 48 km southeast of Ardabil city, at an elevation of 2,700 meters above sea level. Day 1. Arriving in Tehran, staying at a hotel in Tehran

Guide welcomes you at the airport and transfers you to the hotel.

Day 2. Visiting Tehran city, staying at a hotel in Tehran (HB)

A visit to the great capital of Iran can be fascinating according to the fact that they are inscribed on the World Heritage List including 300-year-old palaces, and its museums. So, we will visit Golestan Palace, National Iran Museum, Bazaar and Imam mosque on this day.

Day 3. The summit of Damavand slope, staying at a hotel in Sari (HB)

In the morning, we will depart to Laar and pedal in the slope of Damavand summit (5671 m). After lunch, we will continue our way through a mountainous road toward the north.

Day 4. departing to Damghan, staying at a hotel in Damghan (HB)

In the morning, we will see Hyrcanian Forest that has recently been inscribed on UNESCO World Heritage List and pedal in a path toward Badab-e Surt stepped fountain and visit Cheshmeh Ali on the way before getting to Damghan.

Day 5. cycling to the central desert, staying at the Mesr traditional houses (FB)

In Damghan, we’ll visit the Tarikhaneh Temple, the temple of the oldest mosque in Iran. Then we’ll go toward the south and the heart of Central Desert and visit the Colorful hills and pedal from Jandaq village to Mesr village. We will spend the night under the starry sky of the desert.

Day 6. departing to Bayazeh, staying at a hotel in Bayazeh (HB)

We will pedal in a road among sandy hills after breakfast. Then, we’ll visit Garmeh village and Bayazeh castle which is related to the Sasanian Empire and spend another night in the desert.

Day 7. Departing to Yazd, staying at a hotel in Yazd (HB)

On our way to Yazd, we will visit Kharanaq village and then pedal to Chak Chak Shrine among the rocky mountains. After our visit we’ll get a short rest and cycle to Yazd, a universal registered city.

Day 8. visiting Yazd city visiting, staying at a hotel in Yazd (HB)

We’ll visit attractions of Yazd city all day long, which has recently been registered on UNESCO World heritage list. During this day, we’ll visit the Dakhma, Fire Temple, Dowlat Abad Garden, Jame mosque, Fahadan neighborhood, old tow neighborhood, and Bazaar.

Day 9. Departing to Isfahan and visiting Nain, staying at a hotel in Isfahan (HB)

Before arriving in Isfahan, we’ll have a short stop to visit Single Monarch Mosque (Jame mosque) and then we’ll arrive at the hotel in Isfahan and after a short rest, we are going to visit and walk on Khaju Bridge and Si-o-Se pol.

Day 10. visiting Isfahan city, staying at a hotel in Isfahan (HB)

In the morning, we will visit the Imam Mosque, Āli Qāpu palace, Sheikh Lotfollah Mosque and bazaar in Imam square (Naqsh-e Jahan Square) which is the masterpiece of Safavid era in Iran. After lunch, we’ll have a short rest and in the evening, we will go for a walk in the Armenians neighborhood known as Jolfa and visit the Vank Cathedral.

Day 11. heading to Shiraz, staying at a hotel in Shiraz (500 KM) (HB)

On this day we’ll be able to compare the Islamic civilization with the Achaemenid era. We will step in the first capital of the great Achaemenid Empire and visit the tomb of the Great Cyrus in Pasargad. Then we’ll head to Shiraz.

Day 12. visiting Persepolis and Naqsh-e Rustam, staying at a hotel in Shiraz (HB)

In the morning, we’ll be visiting the 2500-year-old capital of Iran known as Persepolis and Naqsh-e Rustam. After lunch, we will go back to Shiraz and have some free time.

Day 13. City touring and visiting Shiraz, staying at a hotel in Shiraz (HB)

The cultural heritage of Shiraz is related to Zand dynasty and Qajar dynasty that we will visit the best architectural samples and mansions of these historical periods like Eram Persian Garden, Narenjestan e Qavam House, Arg of Karim Khan, bazaar and Nasir al-Molk mosque (Pink mosque). At the end of the day we’ll visit the tomb of Hafez, the famous Persian poet.

Iran’s Labib claims bronze at 2024 Asian Road Cycling Championships

TEHRAN – Iran’s Ali Labib claimed a bronze medal on Monday at the 43d Asian Road Cycling Championships underway in Almaty, Kazakhstan .

He finished in third place in the men’s U23 Individual Road Race with a time of 2:57:35.

Iran’s Mahdi Aghakashi (23), Mohammad Ramandi (28) and Pourya Yaghoubi (47) also competed in the event.

Emirati cyclists Abdulla Jasim Al-Ali and Mohammad Almutaiwei came first and second with 2:55:27 and 2:55:27, respectively.

The Asian Cycling Championships is an annual continental cycling championships for road bicycle racing and track cycling since 1963, exclusively for Asian cyclists selected by the national governing body (member nations of the Asian Cycling Confederation).

Since 2017, competitions on road and track cycling are held separately.

The tournament has brought teams from 28 countries in Kazakhstan.

Is rail travel comfortable?

For the most part, long-distance and inter-regional trains are very comfortable. They often provide more legroom than on planes, air-conditioning, snack bars or vending machines, power outlets and occasionally even wi-fi. 

Regional and metropolitan trains that cover shorter distances are a bit more basic, and because they're often filled with locals travelling for work or a weekend away, your group may need to stand for a short time. But what they lack in luxury, they make up for with convenience and great views. 

Are there toilets on board?

Yes, all trains will have toilets on board, though they may not be the Western-style toilets you’re used to. You should always bring your own toilet paper and hand sanitizer.

Are there power outlets on board?

Power outlets will be available on many trains, but it’s a good idea to invest in a portable charger before your trip in case the outlets are out of use or hard to reach. Wi-fi will be available on some, but not all, trains.

Is train travel safe?

As with any style of travel, it's important to exercise standard safety precautions while traveling via train. Your leader will brief you on detailed safety measures before your train journey, but keeping your valuables close by, especially your passport and travel documents, is always a good idea. Don't leave daypacks or personal items unattended. Traveling with a money belt will reduce the chance of petty theft or pickpocketing, and keeping a lock on your suitcase will ensure peace of mind on your journey.

How fast do the trains go?

Train speeds vary depending on the destination you're visiting. Bullet trains in Japan and China can reach a staggering 220 miles per hour, making them fast and efficient. Trains in Europe tend to be a bit slower, travelling around 125 miles per hour in Switzerland and Italy, but slower is OK when you've got epic views out your window. Vietnam’s Reunification Express averages around 30 miles per hour. 

At times, we do use local/regional trains as transport, which tend to move at a more leisurely pace and make lots of stops.  

How fit must I be to participate in an Intrepid rail trip?

Rail trips can be enjoyed by just about anyone with a reasonable level of fitness, and good general mobility will play a big part in making your trip more enjoyable. 

You are expected to be able to carry your own bags for up to 30 minutes and lift them onto the train. Transport hubs may be crowded, and elevators aren't always available, so you'll need to be comfortable handling your belongings on stairs as you navigate from platform to platform. 

Sometimes you'll need to move quickly with your bags, especially if trying to make a tight connection... you do have a train to catch, after all! More info about pacing and physical rating can be found in the Essential Trip Information section of your itinerary. 

How much luggage can I bring?

On Intrepid's rail trips, you will be responsible for carrying your own bags, so it's a good idea to opt for luggage you can easily lift and move around. Many travelers prefer to carry a backpack, as public transport can often be cramped and may not have luggage racks for large suitcases. Luggage is stored in overhead racks on many trains, so the smaller the bag, the easier it will be to lift above your seat.

Be prepared to pack light, as storage space on trains is often limited, and you'll want to avoid blocking aisles or taking up extra seats. In Japan, luggage may be subject to strict size and weight restrictions on the Shinkansen, and oversized bags may incur an additional fee. What are overnight trains like?

Although the idea of taking an overnight train can be overwhelming, it's an exciting way to immerse yourself in local culture... and it often ends up as a highlight for many travelers. 

Overnight trains are clean, comfortable and safe, and depending on the region you're traveling in, compartments typically hold anywhere from four to six passengers in bunks. Clean sheets and a pillow are provided, but you can bring your own if it makes you more comfortable. There are basic washroom facilities with toilets and sinks in each carriage, but it's good practice to bring your own supply of toilet paper, just in case.

What should I pack for an overnight train?

For the most part, overnight trains are comfortable, and you'll be able to survive with the basics. If you're looking to make the journey a bit more pleasant, consider packing:

Extra toilet paper and hand sanitizer 

A lightweight sleep sheet and pillowcase 

A portable device charger 

An eye mask 

Snacks and drinks 

Meals may be provided, but it’s a good idea to supplement, especially if you have dietary restrictions. 

A luggage lock or lockable bag 

Will I have my own cabin or compartment on an overnight train?

While we do our best to keep groups together on overnight trains, there may be circumstances where travelers are split between compartments and carriages. In some cases, you may share with other travelers in addition to group members, which is a great way to meet locals and experience the local culture firsthand. Your leader will always be close by to help you settle in and answer any questions once you're on board.

If you've booked a single supplement, overnight trains are an exception and you will be sharing a compartment with other members of your group.

Are the trains on time?

The punctuality of trains often depends on the local cultural perception of time. While it's very likely that the Shinkansen in Japan will depart and arrive exactly on time, trains in Italy may take a more flexible approach when it comes to timekeeping. The best way to handle this is to simply go with the flow and enjoy the journey. Delays are often minimal, but in the case of a longer delay, there's not much a deck of cards and a few local snacks can't fix. 

Can I take a rail trip with children?

Train travel can be fun and relaxing, and large windows are perfect for spotting popular landmarks. A dining car, snack trolley, or vending machine can provide good respite for hungry kids and adults alike, plus, onboard bathrooms mean fewer emergency toilet situations (we've all been there). Do I need to purchase travel insurance before traveling?

Absolutely. All passengers traveling with Intrepid are required to purchase travel insurance before the start of their trip. Your travel insurance details will be recorded by your leader on the first day of the trip. Due to the varying nature, availability and cost of health care around the world, travel insurance is very much an essential and necessary part of every journey.
