Video: Windsor by bike with Mind the Gap Tours

Over the past year, Dave and I have become activity enthusiasts when on holiday. Last summer, we went on a kayaking trip of Dubrovnik and went hiking through Plitvice Lakes and Buçaco in Croatia . This is where our obsession with holiday activities really began.

So it was with glee that I went on a recent complimentary biking trip to Windsor with Mind the Gap Tours . Unfortunately Dave couldn’t make it, but I took my fitness fanatic friend Dom along with me instead, and she loved it.

Even if she had a hangover. And it was freezing cold. With snow forecast.

I must admit, I was a little apprehensive and worried about cycling in such conditions. Thankfully, our guide, John, provided us with lots of banter and laughter to keep us warm on the bike ride through the Windsor countryside.

Mind the Gap Tours - Double-barrelled Travel

Me and Dom with our Mind the Gap Tours’ guide John

Windsor is picturesque. According to a recent survey by The Sunday Times , the most millionaires in all of the UK reside in the region, including Elton John, and it’s easy to see why.

Windsor is also home to another Queen – Queen Elizabeth II , who has her official residence, Windsor Castle, there. Another famous landmark is Eton College.

The good thing about the trip is that John likes to keep tour sizes small, so there were only five of us on the bike ride.

You can watch a one minute video of the tour above.

We started our adventure at Paddington Station next to the Paddington Bear statue. I’ve always thought of Paddington Bear as having Wellington boots on his feet, but John told us that the original bear didn’t wear any clothes at all – or boots. The designer, who happens to be the mother of Jeremy Clarkson of Top Gear fame, only plonked Paddington Bear into wellies to help him stand upright. Just one of the many quirky facts we were to learn on the tour.

Paddington Bear Double-barrelled Travel

Paddington Bear how he was originally, before they dressed him in a raincoat and wellies, at Paddinton station in London

We took the train to a station close to Windsor where we picked up our bikes from the back of the Mind the Gap Tours’ van. Wearing a helmet was optional but if there are any helmets you’d like to be seen in, it’s these ones, as they’re rather trendy and have the Union Jack flag painted on them. I opted for the helmet for two reasons. When I was nine I nearly died from a biking accident but thanks to my helmet I was saved. The second reason was that I wanted to attach my GoPro camera to it.

We wound down a narrow dirt track adjacent to the river and enjoyed views of the countryside. Although it was a 12km ride to our final destination – Windsor Castle – it took us most of the morning to complete the ride because we took it slowly.

Windsor Castle Double Barrelled Travel

Our final destination was Windsor Castle and from the way we approached it we had the opportunity to take some great photos

John stopped us every 10 minutes or so to explain places along our route. He told us that if you kill a swan that’s treason against the Queen and you’ll be sent to court for doing so. Interesting fact!

John also pointed out White Lilies Island, some of the most expensive real estate in the whole of Windsor. To rent a five bedroom house on the island would cost you about £7,500 a month. That’s £90,000 a year. You could buy a place in some parts of England for the same price…

Pillar box in Windsor Double-Barrelled Travel

A quaint house in Windsor that’s so old it’s on a lean. The post box is one of the traditional boxes, previously called a pillar box. And you can see where it got its name!

White Lilies are the emblem of Eton College , where the island gets its name, and every year students from the college still visit the Tower of London on the eve of the anniversary of Henry VI’s death. Henry VI founded both Eton College and King’s College in Cambridge, which is why the students take the time each year to remember him.

Dorney Lake Double-Barrelled Travel

Dorney Lake, which is owned by Eton College, is the best rowing facility in the world and was used in the 2012 London Olympics

We rode on to Eton College’s rowing lake which, John told us, is deemed one of the best rowing facilities in the world . Dorney Lake was used as the rowing venue during the Olympic and Paralympic Games for London 2012 and is now open to the public.

Dorney Lake cost £17 million to build and 10 years to complete. Although it costs about £30,000 a year to send your son to Eton , the lake was also funded by grants. Because the school is so old (it was founded in 1440) it’s still open to public funding. This might seem ludicrous, and it’s certainly been debated as to whether it’s government funds well spent, but the upside is that the public get to use the facilities too. We certainly enjoyed a pleasant bike ride around the lake.

Graffiti at Eton College Double-Barrelled Travel

Old school graffiti at Eton College dating from the 1800s

Next stop was the manor house Dorney Court, which dates back to 1440 – the same year Eton was founded. John told us that it’s one of the few houses in the country still privately owned by the same family. The Palmer family have passed down Dorney Court to each generation throughout the years.

Dorney Court - Double-Barrelled Travel

The beautiful Dorney Court, a Tudor mansion that’s as old as Eton College

Many films have been made at the house, including The Other Boleyn Girl and Elizabeth: The Golden Age. Unfortunately it’s only open two months of the year and April isn’t one of those, so we weren’t able to go inside. We did get a chance to have a quick pit stop at the Dorney Court Kitchen Garden however, which sells quaint trinkets and garden plants. John told us the Palmer family needs to open the house for functions and open days to pay for its upkeep, which is very expensive.

marathon in Windsor Double-Barrelled Travel

The reason why a marathon is the strange distance of 26 miles, 385 yards is because the Royal family in 1908 wanted the runners in the Olympic race to finish outside the royal box and that distance was the distance from London to the Royal Box in London!

By this stage we were reaching the end of our bike ride and our pedalling brought us to a stunning view of Windsor Castle, overlooking the lake. It was a prime spot to take photos and from this view it was easy to see why Windsor Castle was built where it is – it’s the highest point in the area.

fire plaque in Windsor Double-Barrelled Travel

John explained to us that this plaque on an old house was a mark to show you had housing insurance. Fire fighters would only put out a house fire if it had this plaque on it because it meant the owner would be able to pay the water fees!

We left the bikes locked up and went from a jaunt through Eton itself. The town is very charming and is one of the last few remaining high streets without chain stores but instead unique boutiques.

We had a quick bite to eat in a café before heading off to Windsor Castle for our visit… Not before John told us where to have a drink afterwards though! Being the helpful guide, he ensured we made the most out of our day trip once more.

On our way back from Windsor that evening, Dom and I reflected on our time and decided it was certainly a worthwhile day out. We arrived back at Paddington nearly 12 hours after we’d left, with happy smiles on our faces. The hangover Dom had had in the morning had been blown away on our cycle and the places I’d seen had given me inspiration for my writing.

But it did leave me wondering… where in the UK should I go next?! Stay tuned…

What you need to know:

Cost: It costs £69 for a day trip on the Mind the Gap Tours trip to Windsor and it’s certainly worth it, as this includes train travel to and from London, entry fee into Windsor Castle (normally more than £17) and bike hire. Of course, it also includes your guide. John was with us from 9am until we entered the castle at 3:30pm, so we certainly got our money’s worth!

When to go: The Mind the Gap Tours trip to Windsor runs Thursday, Friday and Saturday during the warmer months of March – September. Even though it snowed on the day we went, we rugged up warm and it was still very enjoyable.

How to get there: The Mind the Gap Tours trip to Windsor starts and finishes at Paddington Station, which is on the Bakerloo, Hammersmith and City, Circle and District tube lines. It’s also on the overground train line.

Mind the Gap tours paid kindly provided us with a complimentary Windsor tour but as always, our views are our own.

Mind The Gap Tours’ Brixton food tour

dhempe

Mind The Gap food tour starts in Brixton Market where we can savor the fusion of Caribbean flavors, strong musical heritage and experimental restaurant scene of an authentically flavored London market. Brixton has had some controversial past due to riots and anti-establishment feelings but it is a vibrant and bustling suburb of London worth checking out! Brixton enjoys multi-cultural flavors & a rich history as well as the most innovative restaurants on the London foodie scene. Here our guide was showing us pictures of the popular riot right in front of where it happened. It was great to get a glimpse into the history by living it and breathing it!

mind the gap tours

Brixton is full of interesting murals which surprises you as there is a lot of history in every nook and corner of this market and suburb. This particular mural in Brixton train station displays to you the different sort of wares that you could buy in Brixton market over 30 years ago! This and another mural which is there in Brixton station were made in the 1980s by artists Karen Smith and Angie Biltcliffe who were working under the name Anchor Designs.

Brixton station also has the very unique life-size bronze sculptures of waiting passengers on the platform. Our guide mentioned that these sculptures were made by Kevin Atherton (b.1959) and were made of three volunteers who regularly used the station (Peter Lloyd, Joy Battick and Karin Heistermann). They were unveiled on 30th June 1986 by Sir Hugh Casson as part of a £1m renovation of the overground station in Brixton.

One interesting thing I got to know is that Brixton has it’s own currency which is legal too! Right in the heart of London! Can you believe that??!! The Brixton Pound is the local currency that builds a more resilient and inclusive economy, and creates community pride in Brixton. Its money that sticks to Brixton. It is considered similar to British Sterling Pound in value but you could get paid a little extra earlier in the day if you ensured that you are spending most of your money inside Brixton and ensuring that it’s economy develops. I felt this was a very unique feature of the Brixton Pound!

Early on that Saturday morning, there was a line wrapping around the corner for the First Choice Bakery. The bakery supplies “Jamaica patties, English and Caribbean breads, buns, confectionery and other specialties.” We all hung over the multi-cultural Brixton Village Market as our guide stood in the line to get us some delicious burgers. It was great to see a lot of Caribbean influence specially Jamaican nationals in Brixton market. It was wonderful to note that many Indians and Europeans also made this vibrant market their home and rebuilt it after the riots to ensure that the culture remains intact!

mind the gap tours

Our last stop in Brixton Market during Mind The Gap food tour of London was Salon dining room which is located above Cannon & Cannon’s cheese shop at 18 Market Row. They cook fresh, seasonal and inventive food using the best produce they can get their hands on. We tried out some local craft beers and some cold cuts to go with them. Also one of the other unique dish I tried there was the Scotch Egg which is a hard boiled egg wrapped in sausage meat, coated in bread crumbs and then baked.

Taormina, Italy, taken on our 2016 visit

Planning the best possible trip for the best possible price!

We are glad you're here!

Why "Mind the Gap?" Well, if you've been to London you are familiar with the phrase as a warning when getting on or off the Underground.

But for me, it is far more than that. Every gap is an opportunity.

It's a demand to explore what's missing.

Why Use a Travel Agent

Save your sanity.

An agent always knows the best values and monitors your pricing. For one recent cruise booking, we secured over $1,800 in credit for a family whose price dropped after booking!

Your time is valuable so let us do the legwork.  We recently spent more than 30 hours researching the best shore excursions for a family headed to Europe, so you don't have to!

The best part of using a travel agent is their advocacy. Cancelled flights? Hotel not as advertised? Not sure if you need a vaccine or Visa? Let your agent do the troubleshooting so you can focus on enjoying the journey.

We'd love to hear from you!

Have a question about our services? Want to see if your particular vacation is one we can help with? We'd love to hear from you!

Frequently Asked Questions

Why should i use a travel agent, will i pay more if i book through an agent.

Even in the age of online booking, travel agents are a great source of information and discounts. A travel agent can make sure that your trip is tailored to you, assist you in case of unexpected problems, and help you anticipate potential issues in advance.

It depends on the agent and on the request.  Some agents charge a planning fee and it is not uncommon for a fee to be added for booking airline tickets. Mind the Gap Travels does not charge a planning fee.

Do you book group travel?

Yes! Do you have an upcoming conference for your business or a student trip? We can handle the details and ensure that you have access to group seating, entrances, and discounts.

Mind The Gap Tour

The business landscape has changed; business as usual is no longer usual. Today, leadership must respond to these challenges by creating new ways to focus on the gaps that hinder success.

It’s about seeing the experience our customers have with our company; it’s about understanding and relating to all the different generations in both our workforce and our client base; and it’s about closing the gaps between our strategic plans and the execution of those plans.

Because no matter how you slice it execution happens at an individual level. What our employees do or don’t do determines what our companies do or don’t do.

Stan Phelps, Timothy Moore and Gary Tomlinson have helped many see, understand and close three of the most important and costly gaps facing business leaders today.

mind the gap tours

Stan Phelps is an author, speaker and experience architect.  He is the founder of StanPhelps.com based out of the Frontier in Research Triangle Park, NC.  Stan believes that today’s organizations must focus on meaningful differentiation to win the hearts of both employees and customers.  Stan’s presentation is entitled: Seeing the Gap – Little Things Make a Big Difference.

This presentation features lessons from his book and the Amazon Best Seller  “Purple Goldfish 2.0 . ”    It will cover the ingredients of creating signature added value and the 10 different types of little extras such as the importance of follow up and how to handle mistakes.  The presentation will feature customer-centric marketing lessons from leading brands such as Apple, Disney, Southwest and Zappos.  Attendees will learn about differentiation through added value through the Goldfish Rule.  They’ll understand the importance of customer experience and its impact on satisfaction, retention and word of mouth.  They will be equipped with both concepts and relevant example, enabling them to readily apply the principles.

Timothy Moore is   an accomplished author and speaker with over four decades of experience in marketing, sales and training.  As a keynote speaker, consultant and seminar leader at Generational Insights ,  Tim is part of a team that has become the leading voice on the impact of generational differences on marketing, management and sales.

Tim’s presentation is entitled; Understanding the Workplace Generational Gap.  This fun and entertaining presentation answers the question “What causes the generations to differentiate from one another?” Quality employees are your organization’s most valuable resource.  How do you find the best candidates, and how can you keep the ones you have? Who is on you ‘lifer’ list?  What are you doing to make sure they’ll stay?

Each generation, with their unique values, defines and responds to a quality effective public relations experience in their own unique way.   We’ll explore the biases of each of the four generations and give simple, easy to execute strategies for how to best work with each.

Employees and managers need to understand the attitudes and expectation of each of the five generations so they can best work with each.  The days of “treat everyone the same” are no longer with us; now we must accept the needs and desires of the individual.  Attendees will learn to value the attitudes and expectations of each of the four generations.

Gary Tomlinson is an author, speaker and business consultant specializing on the topic of  “Execution", "Execution Management” and "Leadership through the Lens of Execution". Gary believes that today’s organizational leaders must “switch” their leadership focus and learn how to manage and lead execution down to an individual level.

Execution is the great unaddressed issue in the business world today.  Its absence is the single biggest obstacle to success.  In Jim Collins’ book “Good to Great” his research team concluded that strategy doesn’t separate the good from the great, execution does!

There is a gap that exists between what we want our organizations to accomplish and what we actually get done.  And not only does this gap exist but it’s bigger than most of us realize.  It’s known as the Execution Value Gap and it represents the largest opportunity cost for organizations.  The good news is this gap can be closed!

Convention

• Attendees were able to better understand where fallout occurs in execution and how to overcome it.

• They grasped the importance of managing execution down to an individual level, and began implementing new practices right away.

• And they left with the knowledge that it’s always possible to close the gap!

Feel free to reach out to learn more today!

MIND THE GAP TOUR

The phrase “Mind the Gap” was first introduced in 1969 on the London Underground in the United Kingdom.

Some of the platforms on the London Underground are curved and the rolling stock that uses them, are straight which causes an unsafe gap when a train stops at a curved platform.

Because of this, visual and auditory warnings are needed to advise passengers the risk of being caught unaware and sustaining injury by stepping into the gap.

The phrase “Mind the Gap” was chosen for this purpose to warn rail passengers to take caution while crossing the gap between the train door and the station platform.

The phrase “Mind the Gap” can also apply in business to advise its leaders to take caution and avoid costly mistakes by not stepping into their own gaps. These gaps exist and are bigger than most of us realize.

Birdie

Birdie is a beautiful show featuring three professional actors with learning disabilities, blending intricate choreography, original music, and captivating object manipulation to tell a powerful story about climate change. Homie, the main character, travels in a mesmerising upcycled mobile home. They are determined to make a difference in the face of the daunting climate crisis.

Homie meets Birdie, a new friend struggling to navigate a world filled with plastics and pollution. With Homie’s help they embark on a journey towards freedom and hope, inspiring positive action and encouraging people to stand up for what’s right.

But the excitement doesn’t end there! After the show, the audience will have the chance to interact with Homie’s incredible mobile home, complete with designs that make climate change accessible and easy to understand.

Then, you and your family can unleash your creativity with arts and crafts, making pledges and creating artwork that will be displayed as part of the show’s tour and online for everyone to see.

  1. MIND THE GAP TOURS

1 review of Mind The Gap Tours "We did the Drink London tour with Chris. The tour was about 3.5 hours long and included stops at 5 pubs.
