The details

This travel-friendly pouch is perfect for your next getaway, or just a trip to the gym. Its spacious and lightweight fabric is also water-repellent, so you never have to worry about spills when you're on the go.

Thoughtful design details like a side handle make it easy to grab and go, while interior elastic loops help keep fragile containers right-side up in transit. There's even a TSA-approved removable pouch to store your liquids, which is made from transparent plastic for a smooth security experience.

You can shop this travel pouch in four neutral colours: black, grey, tan and brown.

What people are saying

While this zippered pouch has only received a handful of customer reviews so far, Lululemon shoppers have already been impressed by its stylish and practical design.

"Incredible space. Extremely versatile, portable and spacious. Sleek design and super delicate. Love this," reads one review.

"Love this travel bag! Fits all my minis and it’s so cute," reads another. "I like the little holders inside make organization easier."

While it's been called "spacious," some reviewers have found that this bag is too narrow, which can make it prone to tipping over if it's too full.

No matter if you're headed to a day at the beach, to the gym, or on vacation, Lululemon's new Patch Logo Travel Kit is up to the task. This convenient pouch holds all of your essential toiletries in one secure place, and since it also comes with a transparent interior bag, you can rest assured that you won't be holding up any security lines at the airport.

While the verdict is still out on whether the bag is prone to toppling over, demand is still high for this travel-ready pouch. If you're looking to get your hands on Lululemon's latest must-have accessory, you'll want to act quickly — certain colours are already selling out.

I Used to Work at Lululemon, and These Are the 14 Genius Items I Recommend for Travel

I’ve traveled the world with these best-sellers.

Travel + Leisure / Daisy Rodriguez

For the last eight years I’ve enjoyed a career as a travel writer, visiting all seven continents in the process. But before that, I was a store educator at Lululemon , where I learned a lot about the science behind the brand’s popular, comfy activewear. I bought pieces I loved and believed in while working there (though I regret not taking greater advantage of their generous employee discount!), and that’s part of the reason most of my travel wardrobe still features the famous “a” logo.

While Lululemon isn’t famous for low prices, I've experienced first-hand that it’s the kind of place where you go for investment pieces with long shelf lives. Heck, I still wear my Lulu gear that pre-dates Instagram. I call it “vintage.” Of course, Lululemon is always coming out with new stuff I'm shopping these days. Last year alone, they debuted a hiking collection for men and women and introduced their first pair of running shoes. I also love to scroll through the latest deals in the “ We Made Too Much ” section. Currently, I have my eye on these best-selling flared pants (they have thousands of five-star ratings) which are currently nearly $50 off, as well as this travel writer-approved belt bag as a gift for my mom.

Whether you’re looking for gear that makes traveling with your parents easier , or you’re simply treating yourself to something special, I have you covered when it comes to Lululemon. I may no longer be on their payroll, but I spent many hours on the site recently and put together a list of travel-friendly products, many of which I personally own, starting at just $38. Whether it’s a convertible backpack or a reversible sweater, if it’s below, it has my unofficial travel-writer stamp of approval. Just keep in mind that any items marked down may be final sale. That said, I doubt you’ll have any regrets.

Travel + Leisure / Katie Jackson

Lululemon Lab Convertible Duffle Bag 29L

My first insider tip for you? The Lululemon 2-in-1 Travel Duffel Backpack is genius because it’s actually two bags in one. First, it’s a great weekender duffel for quick trips where you’re only packing for a night or two. Second, it converts into a backpack — I can see myself using it as a personal item on the plane. In terms of features, it has a padded laptop pocket for electronics, a sleeve that makes it easy to slide on top of your favorite roller bag, and an exterior water bottle holder comes in handy for staying hydrated.

City Sleek 5 Pocket Wide Leg Pant

Back when I worked at Lululemon, they had mostly leggings and yoga pants. These days, I love seeing options you can wear to the office like the City Sleek 5 Pocket Wide Leg Pant . Of course, since it’s made of a sweat-wicking, four-way stretch “performance fabric” that’s also wrinkle-resistant, it’s a great travel pant. And unlike leggings, it has several pockets. There are two in front, two in back, and a smaller pocket that’s perfect for coins or keys. Available in both black and white, it’s available in sizes 26-29 and is currently $59 off.

Everywhere Belt Bag

With a 4.6-star average rating from more than 23,000 reviews, the Everywhere Belt Bag is so popular that Lululemon has a “purchase limit” on it to keep it from selling out. You can only buy up to 10, and they have to be in different colors. The main thing I love about this bag is that, like the duffel above, it can be worn two ways. Wear it as a traditional fanny pack or as a crossbody bag. It’s small enough that it’s easy to pack around but big enough to fit all of your valuables including passport, phone, wallet, and hotel key.

Chargefeel Low Women's Workout Shoe

Lululemon didn’t make shoes back when I worked there, but I figured it would only be a matter of time before they entered that market. And considering how highly rated their shoes are, it looks like they’re delivering a quality product. The Chargefeel Low Women’s Workout Shoe , for example, has a 4.2-star average rating. I love that it’s available for less than $150, and it’s designed for both running and training, so essentially, it takes the place of two pairs. It’s currently available in Frosted Jade in all sizes.

Speed Up High-Rise Lined Short 4”

I love Lululemon’s best-selling Speed Up High-Rise Lined Short 4” so much I own three pairs! My oldest pair, which has faded some but is still in good condition, dates all the way back to 2009. In fact, I wore them on almost a daily basis while backpacking for 80 days around Europe the summer before my sophomore year of college. Of course, in addition to sightseeing on sunny days, these shorts are also ideal for exercise. They have a built-in liner, so you don’t need to get a pair of underwear dirty, a zippered pocket for keys or a credit card, and an adjustable drawcord waist. While they’re so popular they seldom go on sale, they’re available in lots of options (hence, why I own so many). Choose from 11 colors in sizes 0-14.

Convertible High-Rise Hiking Jogger

The Convertible High-Rise Hiking Pant , which debuted last fall when Lululemon launched its first-ever hiking collection, quickly became a staple in my travel wardrobe. Earlier this week I was hiking at Montage Big Sky in Montana, where there was still snow on the ground but the temperature was in the 70s Fahrenheit. So, mid-hike when I started to get hot, I turned them into shorts by unzipping the leg bottoms and stashing them in the cargo pockets. There’s also a zippered pocket, which I used for my credit card and hotel key. Currently, they come in three colors and sizes 0-14. One shopper who left a five-star rating wrote: “Bought three pairs of these; they are my favourite versatile pant!”

Pace Rival Mid-Rise Skirt

As a former tennis coach, I have a closet full of tennis skirts. But what I love about the Pace Rival Mid-Rise Skirt is that it works for tennis, but not only tennis. The 15-inch style (it comes in two lengths: 12-inch and 15-inch) is perfect for a summer day of sightseeing, and it can easily transition into an evening piece perfect for going out on the town. Of course, it is athleisure, so it’s comfortable and functional first and foremost. There’s even a zippered pocket in the back and drop in pockets built into the skirt’s liner. Choose from six colors in most sizes from 0-20.

Carry Onwards Travel Yoga Mat

The Travel Mat is a great travel accessory for the traveler who likes to stay active on vacation or bring their yoga practice with them. I could even see myself using this mat, which is made of sustainably sourced natural rubber, to stretch on a long layover. At just three pounds, it’s pretty lightweight, and when it’s folded up it takes up about half the space, length-wise, of a regular yoga mat.

Swiftly Relaxed Half Zip

Although the Swiftly Relaxed Half Zip is designed for running and training, it’s still a great lightweight, travel-friendly layer even if you don’t plan on breaking a sweat on your next trip. That said, if you do work out in it while you’re away, you’ll probably enjoy the fabric’s trademarked Silverescent technology. It prevents the growth of odor-causing bacteria, which means you get more wears in between washes. It’s available in two colors and sizes 0-8 and if you act fast, you can get it for $29 off!

ABC Men’s Jogger

While my go-to travel jogger is the Align jogger, I always recommend the men’s equivalent to my guy friends. Like my joggers, the ABC Jogger is made of a wrinkle-resistant, quick-drying, four-way stretch fabric that, despite being as comfy as sweats, looks polished enough to be dressed up for a night out on the town, especially when the waistband drawcord is worn inside. In addition to a secure back pocket for his wallet, these joggers have two front pockets with hidden media sleeves. They’re currently available in seven colors and sizes XS-5XL.

5-Year Basic T-Shirt, 5-Pack

Do I think Lululemon is cheap? Heck no. But I do know their stuff lasts so long you can wear it for years. For example, the 5-Year Basic T-Shirt, 5-Pack is designed to last half a decade. Although these shirts are made for men, I live in them (they come in sizes XS-XXL) because oversized is in, and they go with every kind of bottom. One shopper who left a five-star review raved that they are made of “soft, breathable fabric and a nice slim cut. Just what I was looking for in an undershirt [and] basic T-shirt for everyday wear.”

Men’s Hybrid Pool Short 7”

While I’ve never had swimwear from Lululemon, I did sell Robert Downey, Jr. a swimming cap when I worked there! And if we’d had the Men’s Hybrid Pool Short 7” in stock, I would have tried to talk him into buying those, too. Personally, I love this short, which is made of 100 percent recycled polyester, because it has a zippered back pocket for small valuables, “laser-cut” ventilation panels for breathability, and the brand’s signature Xtra Life Lycra, which prevents chlorine damage. One five-star review left by a former lifeguard says they wish they’d discovered these years ago. Choose from seven colors in sizes XS-XXL.

Warp Light Packable Men's Jacket

I’m a sucker for anything with “packable” in the product title, so the Warp Light Packable Men's Jacket which packs down into its own back pocket automatically gets my approval. It’s made of a four-way stretch breathable mesh fabric that repels moisture, and to further keep water out, the hood is cinchable. It also has two zippered pockets and a “hidden sleeve” to keep your phone safe and dry. One shopper who left a five-star rating wrote: “Bought this as a lite packable jacket for a trip recently. It was fantastic! Provided some protection from light rain [which] was nice and light even when it got warmer. Was able to easily pack down and be carried around in my day bag when it got too warm out.” The Warp Light Packable Men’s Jacket is currently available in three colors and sizes XS-5XL.

Down for It All Jacket

This summer my travel editor wants me to fly the new Icelandic airline, PLAY, to Reykjavik, one of summer’s hottest, but not literally, destinations. Since daily lows will be in the 40s Fahrenheit, I’m bringing my beloved Down for It All Jacket , which is as travel-friendly as it is warm (it’s wind-proof, water-resistant, and made of 700-fill-power goose down). I’m a big fan of the cozy hood, and the hand pockets that feature a “hidden” sleeve for my iPhone. While it’s not currently on sale, it does come in sizes 0-14.

Is Moscow Safe? Crime Rates & Safety Report

Moscow, Russia

On Feb. 24, 2022, Russia invaded its neighbor country Ukraine, starting a war between these two countries.

This act of invasion caused many Ukrainians to flee their country and seek shelter in places like Poland, Hungary, Slovakia, etc…

At this time, we recommend no travel to Russia or Ukraine, or any neighboring countries for your own safety.

Russia : Safety by City

  • Nizhny Novgorod
  • Novosibirsk
  • Saint Petersburg
  • Yekaterinburg

Moscow, the capital of Russia, is a political, scientific, historical, architectural and business center of this huge country.

It’s one of the most visited places in Russia, and for good reason.

The best-known parts of Russia are concentrated precisely in the urban areas and cities like Moscow and Saint Petersburg.

Moscow’s history attracts the most tourists, as they are fascinated by it is a surreal and sometimes brutal but nevertheless thrilling and jaw-dropping national story.

In this city, visited by 17 million tourists annually, the history, told in its numerous museums, some of which are the world’s greatest, interacts with modernity.

For example, in the Garden of Fallen Monuments (Fallen Monument Park), you can see entire clusters of modern art contrasting with the very non-conceptual Communist monuments.

  • Warnings & Dangers in Moscow

OVERALL RISK: MEDIUM

Generally speaking, Moscow today is safe as much as other cities in Europe, despite its problematic history with criminal activity in the 90s. However, if you’re planning on traveling to Moscow, keep in mind that you should always keep your guard up and remain aware of your surroundings, just in case.

TRANSPORT & TAXIS RISK: LOW

Generally speaking, transportation in Moscow is safe, but you should bear in mind that kidnappings have been known to happen, mostly in unlicensed taxis, so be careful when hailing one on the streets. Keep in mind that the most dangerous areas where small crime tends to occur are the underground walkways, called “perekhods”. Only use official services like Yandex Taxi, Uber or Gett taxi.

PICKPOCKETS RISK: HIGH

Pickpocketing is very common in Moscow, and surprisingly it is mostly performed by groups of children. Pay attention to your belongings, don’t leave them in plain sight and be especially careful in crowded places like stations or near tourist attractions.

NATURAL DISASTERS RISK: LOW

Moscow isn’t particularly susceptible to natural disasters. Some blizzards and snowstorms are possible during winter which can affect the traffic and delay your flights. During winter, be prepared to face the below-freezing temperatures.

MUGGING RISK: MEDIUM

The situation improved drastically when it comes to kidnappings and muggings. Generally, never accept free drinks or food when you’re in a club or a bar. Drink spiking and then attacking and robbing the victim have been reported on numerous occasions.

TERRORISM RISK: HIGH

After the recent terrorist attack in the subway in St. Petersburg the probability of this situation happening again in Moscow is very high.

SCAMS RISK: HIGH

There are many scams in Moscow, usually performed by children trying to distract you and then steal some money from you. Never talk to strange kids on the street. Also, you should avoid playing street gambling games.

WOMEN TRAVELERS RISK: LOW

Women are generally safe in Moscow, though you should avoid finding yourself alone in clubs or bars, and of course, apply all normal precaution measures like avoiding remote and poorly lit streets and areas.

  • So... How Safe Is Moscow Really?

Moscow experienced a rise when it came to crime rates during the 1990s.

Violent crime, as well as petty crime and scams,  had increased, but the biggest part of the violence was within the criminal groups themselves, and it didn’t affect foreigners that much.

However, it decreased since the 90s, so right now, for tourists, Moscow isn’t more dangerous than any other European city, it’s even less so.

The crime rate in Moscow is fairly lower than one in New York, London or Paris, so you should feel safe here.

Also, you can count on the officials to be uncorrupted – don’t ever try to bribe them: you will be charged with bribery.

Bear in mind that if you are a member of the LGBT community, there is no reason to avoid Moscow altogether but you should refrain from any public displays of affection.

As of June 2013, “homosexual propaganda to minors” is prohibited, which means that any discussion of gay rights or homosexuality issues in the presence of minors is punishable by law.

While you walk around Moscow, you might encounter police officials that may demand to see your papers to check if you have been registered within 7 business days of your arrival into Moscow.

You shouldn’t have any problems with this, because if you stay in a hotel then you are automatically registered and will be handed a confirmation paper.

  • How Does Moscow Compare?
  • Useful Information

Most countries do need a visa to enter Russia, and if you’re a U.S. citizen you must possess both a valid U.S. passport and a bona fide visa issued by a Russian Embassy or Consulate. None of the nationals that do need a visa can acquire one upon arrival, so make sure you apply for your visa in advance. If you are not sure about your visa status, visit www.doyouneedvisa.com which will let you know whether or not you need visa based on your nationality and the country you want to visit.

The Russian ruble is the official currency in Moscow. ATMs are widespread throughout the country and credit cards are accepted everywhere.

Moscow has a highly continental influenced climate characterized by warm to hot and dry summers and extremely cold, freezing winters with temperatures as low as -30°C – sometimes even lower, with heavy snowfall.

Sheremetyevo International Airport is the Russian busiest international airport. It is located in Molzhaninovsky District, Northern Administrative Okrug, in Moscow, about 29 km northwest of central Moscow.

Travel Insurance

Just like anywhere else, we advise getting travel insurance when traveling to Moscow, because it would cover not only medical problems but also theft and loss of valuables.

9 Reviews on Moscow

That's just not true.

The person who wrote the text obviously have never been in Moscow and in Russia at all. This is ridiculous. Even about pickpocketing, the risk at most is medium, mugging is zero in historical places but is pretty high in sleeping quarters

Your rating is only two stars for safety though? So I am confused. Are you rating the article to be in poor taste?

I went to Moscow in 2021. I enjoyed the trip. I felt there were “unsafe areas” so I avoided them. So long as you know where you are going and don’t insult the locals, you should be fine.

51% safe?! Is this out of date?

Moscow and Russia in general are MUCH SAFER than Paris or London, yet those latter are more than 15 points ahead?!

Hell, it’s even admitted in the above text: “Moscow isn’t more dangerous than any other European city, IT’S EVEN LESS SO.” Yeah, you bet! And then: “the crime rate in Moscow is fairly lower than one in New York, London or Paris, so you should feel safe here.” So why the low rating? I don’t get it.

Also, the latest terrorist attack in Moscow happened in 2010… so how can you honestly say that the risk is still “high”? Especially for the fact Russia is very much on the edge when it comes to fighting terrorism domestically and over the world.

Sure, it might not be ideal everywhere in Moscow, but it’s WAY SAFER than in Paris, especially at night. You just can’t go out in Paris after the evening anymore, in most areas (I got assaulted for no reason at Châtelet-les-Halles and taking the RER train at dark is becoming more and more risky)… while in Moscow, chances are that you’ll see girls in miniskirts walking home while quietly singing. Or maybe you’ll stumble upon some gorgeous lady asking you for a lighter and then giving you her number for a coffee the next day. So very dangerous!

I sense a serious bias, here. Is it because of that LGBT thing? Could you pick a more extreme case? Yeah, you can totally be gay in Russia, just be so in private. There even are transsexuals, but this is a traditional and respectable country, so you should respect their choice of not publicizing various sexual lifestyles.

Moscow and Saint Petersburg are safe

Moscow and Saint Petersburg are very safe in my opinion! I’ve been to both cities visiting family! There are so many people out on the streets and on public transportation- I felt very safe! You need to change your ratings!!

Any update on Covid-19 to visit Moscow

I visited 118 country and Moscow one of the safest city I have been, st Petersburg as well, I read this article hoping to find any update on covid-19 restrictions upon arrival, so if anyone can update I’m planning to visit Moscow again but I need to know if quarentain is required or mandatory, anyone can share, cheers.

In Russia nobody cares, masks off. I dont know if fiew thousands of infected per day are high for you though. I was never arrested for not wearing mask, but you have to have it on you. Sometimes cops ask to put mask, you just do that and everything ok, some shops can refuse to do service if you dont have mask. I assume they pressured by boss, so just put on mask, they can give you gloves and dont cause any problems.

Written by someone who never visited Russia

A veer biased review. Moscow or St. Petersburg for being such brilliant truly cosmopolitan cities are extremely safe. Pickpocketing in Russia?! By children?! Who wrote this? Clearly by someone who has never been to the great country of Russia.

Have never been there. But wish me well

Bias review, Moscow is much safer than that!

This review is so bias and just wrong! First of all apart from being a political, scientific and etc center, it is an absolutely beautiful city and a very culturally rich city. For tourists there’s a huge range of delicious food, amazing shopping, a lot of cultural activities, and all sorts of entertainment. I’ve travelled there in December 2019, and most of the time I spent walking around and exploring by myself, be it during day time or night, nothing happened to me once. I mostly used subways and sometimes taxi, both safe. Just have a common sense when it comes to safety and you’ll be fine. You need to travel there at least once in a lifetime, it’s a completely different experience and it’s a beautiful one, NOT a communistic terrorist epicenter as some describe it to be.

Sure would appreciate someone who has taken "Best of Moscow by high speed train" from St. Petersburg could please share their impressions of this shore excursion. From the description this sounds like a very long day.

Wondering how the 4 hour train trip was in terms of accommodations, etc. Also what time did you leave the ship and what time at night did you return? Were both legs of the trip on the high speed rail (I read that slower trains also travel the same tracks)?

My wife and I are considering this excursion. We thought that if we are making all the effort to go to Russia then how could we pass up going to Moscow, walking in Red Square, seeing St. Basil, etc.

If you are considering this on the 2015 June Baltic cruise on Voyager; my suggestion is don't. There is so much to do in St. Petersburg and although a train is one of my favorite ways to travel the time would be far better spent in St. P.

Thanks for the advice. Yes, this would be on the Voyager during the 2015 season but not yet sure exactly which cruise.

We did the Moscow excursion "on a different luxury line", but from your brief description it sounds very much like the same trip, so I will operate on that assumption. It is a VERY long day! We left the ship at 5:30 AM and returned at 12:30 AM. The highspeed train trip is comfortable, and while they call it "Business Class" it does not compare well to the equivalent class on say Rail Europe. When we did it in 2011, we did have highspeed both ways, and the trip back seemed much longer as the adrenaline and excitement had worn off!:D

Moscow itself is not that terribly different from any other big city in the world, but this Cold War kid never thought he would ever stand in Red Square, never mind walk the grounds of The Kremlin, or tour The Kremlin Palace, or see (but not visit) Lenin's Tomb, or visit The Armoury. But he did, and he loved every minute of it! Yes, it is a long day, and you barely scratch a scratch on the surface, but it is worth it. There is a tremendous amount to see in St. Petersburg, but every Baltic cruise goes to St. Petersburg, so you can go back if you choose to. Not every cruiseline offers you the chance to see Moscow.

I have not personally done this tour, but our last time in St Petersburg, the private guide that we hired for a day was leading the regent tour to Moscow on the high speed train the next day. He said it was way better than the previous alternative, which was flying to Moscow and back. He said that you actually got to Moscow faster because you didn't have to deal with airline checkin etc. it did seem like a very long day to me, and there is so much to see and do in st. Petersburg that I didn't consider doing it.

We toured to Moscow from St. Petersburg via the hi-speed SAPSAN train last September, from a Baltic cruise on the Oceania Marina. You need to have a two-night, three day port call in St. Petersburg to take this tour because the tour typically leaves the ship around 5:00 - 5:30 AM and doesn't return until after midnight the next day. We didn't take the ship's tour; we made private arrangements with TravelAllRussia for three days of touring, the first and third days in St. Petersburg and the second day the tour to Moscow by train. Our cost for the private tour for three days was about the same as what the ship charged for the excursion to Moscow alone. There are a number of private tour agencies that operate in St. Petersburg and offer the Moscow train tours; we would strongly recommend them over the ship's tours.

All three days had private guides with car and driver. The second day, the driver picked us up at the ship and took us to the train, but we were alone on the train, and met in Moscow by the guide on the station platform. After our tour and dinner, we were brought back to the train and after the return train trip met by the driver and taken back to the ship. Because you are alone on the train you must have your own Russian visas.

If this is your first visit to St. Petersburg, I would agree there is much more to see there. We found Moscow somewhat a disappointment, particularly Red Square. The Kremlin and the cathedral in Red Square were also worth seeing. But the best thing we saw was the Moscow subway! I worked for the Washington Metro system back in the 1980s as it grew from 40 to 80 miles and although I was in the computer area, I learned a lot about the challenges of running a subway system. We used the Moscow system to get across the city from where we had dinner to the train station, and I was amazed at the cleanliness', speed of operation, the short headways maintained, and the courtesy of everyone involved. A very impressive experience!

We had been to St. Petersburg before, and so had the time to take a day and go to Moscow. Also, I really like trains, and the SAPSAN is a German train set running on Russian rails. Seats are like first class domestic air, spacious but not too plush or comfortable, but with enough room. Not too much recline, and almost 8 hours on the train in two shots is a lot for an old man. They come through and sell drinks, candy, etc. but the sellers don't speak English and no one around us helped, so we had just poor coffee once coming, and brought stuff with us for the trip back. Not too much to see from the train either, particularly on the return when it is night the whole way.

If you decide to go, take a private tour and avoid the overly expensive ship's tour. I'm glad we did it, but wouldn't bother to repeat the tour; we've seen Moscow.

Thanks so much to all of you for the thorough and thought insight. Yhe information you have provided is most helpful.

countflorida: Your detailed post is very helpful. We are not quite ready for a Baltic cruise but should do so within a year. Time enough to do our pre travel research, bookings and visa gathering.:) Thank you!

I did this on Seabourn. IMO DONT. Take Aeroflop (er Aeroflot). The train has non folding seats where you are literally knee to knee with your fellow passenger (facing each other). Further they don't believe in air conditioning. It's also the worlds slowed bullet train. I think I would have found more enjoyment wandering around the St. Petersburg and Moscow airports.

Countflorida,

This is a little off topic,, however we had planned a river cruise in Russia but decided we would rather stay on land and have booked about two weeks with Travel-All-Russia using the private guide and driver. I'm curious as to how you found them as a tour company.

The guides they provided were fine. We had a different guide each of the days in St. Petersburg, but both were flexible, pleasant, knowledgeable and spoke English very well, as did the guide in Moscow, incidentally. She was a bit aloof, distant, not too friendly, but otherwise fine. In fact, she was the one who suggested taking the Metro, which unexpectedly became one of the highlights of the Moscow excursion. If I have a complaint with AllTravelRussia, it is with their plan and its execution (more later).

I had requested emphasis on World War II (in Russia, the Great Patriotic War) sites and info. In scheduling us, they weren't careful about dates and a couple of the sites we wanted to see were scheduled on the third day, after we'd been to Moscow. But both sites were closed that day of the week, and that info was readily available, right on web sites describing them. Also, the included meals (lunches in St. Pete, dinner in Moscow) were not what we asked for: light meals with some choices, so we could avoid things we didn't like and choose things we did like. My request was ignored; we were given full Russian meals with a fixed menu, no choice. On the first day, a fish dish was the entre, but I am allergic to fish. Fortunately, I had the e-mail I'd sent with me and showed it to the guide, and she was able to change my entre to chicken, which was very good actually. But we didn't want a 3-4 course lunches or dinner (in Moscow). We had the guide drop the lunch the third day, although we never got any credit or refund. But, particularly in contrast to the ship's tours, the prices were so reasonable we didn't worry too much about it.

The people who were on the ship's tour to Moscow saw us boarding the same train for which they were forced to queue up and wait on the way back, and asked us what we had done. I was candid and open so they were not happy when I explained what we had arranged and particularly what it had cost. Also, when we returned to the ship, we found they had laid on a late supper for those who had gone to Moscow, so up we went and had something. Well, it turns out the late supper was supposed to be just for those on the ship's tour, but we and others on 'independent' tours, there were a dozen or more of us, crashed the party, actually got there first, and they didn't realize it until the larger group arrived and there weren't enough tables/places set. By that time, the 'independents' had all gotten served and were eating; what could they do?

A couple from the larger group sat down with us and asked us about our tour, and they were the ones I told about our arrangement and its cost. They turned to others who’d been with them and announced the details, loudly enough so the whole room heard, which started a lot of bitching and complaining. I gathered they weren't very happy with the ship's tour to begin with, and this was the straw that broke the camel's back. We finished up and beat it out of there, but overheard later that one of the excursion staff came to check on something and ran into a real mess. I caught a cold on the trip, which forced me to bed the second day following in Tallinn, so by the time we reappeared we heard about the contretemps' but apparently no one recalled who started it, thankfully.

Because of what happened to us, I would probably not use AllTravelRussia if I were to go again, or if I did, I would be sure to get confirmation of every detail of the tour. They do have good reviews generally, and we were certainly helped by their visa department and liked the guides and drivers. Their weakness, I say now with full 20:20 hindsight, is that once the sales person who plans the tour, sells it to you and collects your money, he (or she) transfers the plan to their Russia office for implementation; there is no follow-up to make sure it gets done right. And that is where our problems arose; we paid for a custom tour but got a standard package with a few destinations switched, and no one checked them out, even to see when they were open the day we were scheduled to go. If you check every detail that’s important to you, it should be OK, but that’s a hell of a way to have to do business, in my opinion.

Thank you for the 20/20 hindsight observation on your Russian tour operator, and better priced than the ship's excursion cost.

Thanks very much for the feedback.

We had the same experience as you so far as price. We originally booked a Viking Cruise but, hearing some things about the river cruises that made us unhappy, looked into other options. T-A-R cost the same or less than a cruise and had us in hotels for 11 days. We opted for the private tour. They have three tour levels, based on hotels. We originally opted for the four star as it did not cost much more than the three star hotels. Finally we decided to throw it all in and upgraded to five star. In Moscow we will be at the newly opened Kempinsky which is two blocks from Red Square. In St. Petersburg it is the Grand Hotel Europe, one of the most vaunted luxury hotels in Russia. Location is important for us as the tours use up only part of the day so being in the center of everything for our independent touring is important. As with many other cities, the less you pay, the farther out of the center of town you are.

We have been working with our salesman in D.C. and he seems to get back to us with the changes we want. He recently returned from Russia so is up on everything. When I asked they said they paid the full TA commission if I wanted so I got my usual TA on board so he is watching our back and giving us that extra level of comfort. He also set up our air, which I know pays him little or nothing, and got us business class for much less than T-A-R wanted for economy, though it took working for a while with a consolidator. He's happy to get his 10 percent on this trip without having booked it. He also took care of the trip insurance. We've been doing a lot of research on the CC sister site Trip Advisor and will write a report there. We will, I guess, become a source of info for CC members after having spent 5 days in Moscow and 6 in SP.
