Harry Styles Says ‘Goodbye For Now’ as ‘Love on Tour’ Officially Ends: ‘You’ve Changed My Life’

By Larisha Paul

The first solo tour from Harry Styles , Live on Tour, consisted of 89 shows performed in under a year. When it ended in July 2018, the singer shared a parting message thanking everyone for coming and bidding a momentary farewell before running off to make new music. Flash forward five years, and we’ve arrived at the conclusion of Love on Tour, the collection of 169 shows in support of that music — and the goodbye this time around is just as bittersweet , if not more, as it punctuates the most transformative era of his career thus far.

The first fans highlighted in the video recall skipping class to buy Love on Tour tickets, deciding: “ Harry Styles is more important than anthropology.” Outside of the other venues he performed at, fans assisted each other with applying glittering gems to each other’s hair, kicked off their platform boots while they waited, and broke down some self-made choreography in preparation for a night of dancing.

“It’s such a different atmosphere, and you can feel it when you walk in,” another person states in a voiceover during the montage. “In a room full of strangers, you can feel like you’re really in a family.” And each night backstage, Styles was preparing for them, too. In the video, the singer is shown sliding on his signature ring collection, cycling through the nearly 200 glammed-out outfits he donned over the course of the tour, and breaking into the dance moves his fans have learned by heart.

“We want to help each other and just be kind to each other and love each other,” another fan explains, recalling the strong sense of community and unspoken understanding created in these live music spaces. “Those friendships are gonna stay after the tour and that doesn’t end because the tour is ending. That’s always going to be there.”

Harry had to cancel/postpone all concerts twice due to the COVID-19 pandemic. He finally got back out there on September 4, 2021 in Las Vegas.

Harry unfortunately didn't get to play at Royal Arena in Copenhagen, Denmark on July 3, 2022 because there was a terrible shooting in the mall next door, where many of his fans had chosen to hang out before the concert.

Harry Styles' Love On Tour in numbers

Harry Styles' Love On Tour in numbers

Harry Styles played to an audience of more than five million people over 173 dates on his mammoth Love On Tour run, which raised more than $6.5 million for various charities including Planned Parenthood, Choose Love, Physicians for Reproductive Health and more.

After three years, Love On Tour came to a close last week at the RCF Arena in Reggio Emilia, Italy, where the singer played to more than 100,000 people. The run of dates began on September 4 2021, after Styles pushed back shows originally planned for 2020 due to the coronavirus pandemic.

That came shortly after the release of his second album Fine Line (which has 803,223 sales to date, according to the Official Charts Company) and was followed by his current album Harry’s House (651,502), which provided an anchor for the announcement of more dates.

In the UK, Styles played a two-night run at Wembley Stadium last summer, before a four-night stint at the same venue this year. The shows broke the attendance record for the North London stadium .

Back in June last year, Wembley’s then-senior commercial director James Taylor heaped praise on Styles in an interview with Music Week.

“It was meant to be at The O2, but demand was so high that it made sense that he went straight into the stadiums,” he said. “He’s going to go into that Ed Sheeran and Coldplay level, they’re both due to do their 12th shows this year at Wembley and I can see Harry on his third or fourth tour being up on that level. There’s definitely more to come from him, his show will get better and better. If he’s that good on his first stadium show, you look forward to seeing his second and his third…”

Joined by band members Pauli Lovejoy,  Sarah Jones, Mitch Rowland, Madi Diaz, Elin Sandberg, Ariza, Yaffra, Parris Fleming, Kailah Vandever, Lorren Chiodo and Laura Bibbs, Styles also played 20 nights at Madison Square Garden and 18 at the Forum in Los Angeles. Also in California, he headlined Coachella.

While Styles was on the road, Harry’s House and the rest of his catalogue continued to rack up the numbers, while Styles received six nominations at the Grammys this year, winning Album Of The Year and Best Pop Vocal Album Of The Year. At the BRITs in February, he won British Album, British Song, British Artist and Best Pop/R&B act.

As It Was , the relentless lead single from Harry’s House, hit No.1 in 33 countries. In the UK, Styles achieved the double in the UK year-end charts for 2022 .

Harry’s House achieved 460,432 2022 sales (including 299,032 from streams, 150,759 physical copies and 10,641 downloads). As It Was debuted at No.1 in the singles chart for Harry Styles in April 2022 and spent 10 weeks at the summit. Its total chart sale for the year was 1,573,672.

As It Was was streamed 180.9 million times in the UK in 2022, as well as selling 12,502 physical copies and 52,569 downloads. As well as securing 10 weeks as the UK No.1, it spent 15 weeks topping the US Hot 100 – a record for a UK artist.

While it's nothing new, and we're certainly not complaining, Harry Styles ' name is inescapable right now.

Not content with claiming 2022's Official biggest song with As It Was , even bagging the Official Charts Double as the year's biggest LP Harry's House simultaneously hit Number 1, making moves in the beauty business with Pleasing and sweeping up at the BRITs and GRAMMYs , the One Direction star's now preparing to treat fans across Europe to Love On Tour all over again.

Harry Styles' next Love On Tour concert is Merkur Spiel-Arena, Dusseldorf, Germany on June 27th and June 28th 2023.

Following the success of his Coachella sets and One Night Only performances everywhere from New York to Brixton last year, Harry's rescheduled European concerts kicked off on Saturday June 11 2022 at Glasgow's Ibrox Stadium.

If you're off to see Harry at his next date at Coventry Building Society Arena and want to know which songs you can expect, keep reading. He's even switched up the setlist especially for the European leg, adding a new 1D Four album fan favourite.

The Harry Styles Show (and Some Music) Comes to New York

The first two nights of a 15-concert run at Madison Square Garden were heavy on charisma, banter and nods to the past.

love on tour total shows

By Jon Caramanica and Lindsay Zoladz

Over the weekend, Harry Styles began a 15-night stand at Madison Square Garden, an impressive feat befitting one of the most popular musicians in the world. (He’ll begin a similar stretch in October at the Kia Forum in Inglewood, Calif. — his tour supporting his latest album, “Harry’s House,” consists of a series of residencies .) But Styles, who came to fame as part of the British boy band One Direction, is still relatively early in his solo career, and is still establishing his sonic ideas. Two New York Times critics attended the first two nights of his Love on Tour run in New York to see how he wielded his gravitational pull.

JON CARAMANICA I always liked One Direction , more or less. Or maybe I liked what the group represented: a rejection of the hyperprocessed boy band, and by extension an acknowledgment that doing the least can still earn you the most. They weren’t trying to delude audiences about their artistry — their casualness was foundational to their appeal. But that approach wears thin in a solo act, and time and again during the Harry Styles show at the Garden on Saturday night, I found myself vexed. Off-the-charts charisma, collective exuberance, decently competent band, and yet at the center of it all, Styles was inscrutable. Musically, at least. I’ve rarely if ever seen someone more confident in their ownership of the stage, but everything underneath felt slight. All razzle, no dazzle. What am I missing? (I’m not missing anything.)

LINDSAY ZOLADZ Hmm, Jon, maybe a boa? Despite all of the construction around Madison Square Garden, I had no difficulty finding the venue’s entrance: I just followed the trail of rainbow feathers shed from the signature Styles neckwear that at least half of the audience seemed to be sporting. My thoughts today (and over the next several weeks of Styles’s 15-date residency) are with the Garden’s cleanup crew.

I’ve long considered One Direction to be the quintessential boy band of the fan-service era — expertly primed to respond to the demands of their devoted, social-media savvy stan army — and after catching Styles’s show on Sunday night, I’m ready to declare him the defining solo artist of that era, too. I am not sure I’ve ever seen a pop star wave so much from the stage in my entire life? Roughly a third of his performance seemed to comprise waving, pointing and blowing kisses to various sections of the audience, whose volume approximated a jet taking off. Most of the time I could not hear Styles’s voice well enough to determine if he was hitting all the notes, though the crowd’s reaction was energetic enough that they did not seem to care. This show felt, as so much of Styles’s music does, first and foremost for the fans, which — I agree — can sometimes make the man at the center of it all feel like a bit of an enigma.

CARAMANICA Let’s try to distill the Harry Styles musical proposition. He has nowhere near the determined agita of, say, Shawn Mendes; nowhere near the vocal litheness of Justin Bieber. (Also:#FreeZayn) And it goes without saying that despite the rampant Eltonisms on display throughout Styles’s solo catalog, and the (sub?)conscious echoes of John’s sartorial glamour in Styles’s Gucci gear, he has nowhere near John’s verve or panache. It is all quite a brittle foundation upon which to build this fame skyscraper.

But yes, the waving. Also the utterly-at-ease shimmying. And that thing he did mid-show where he took a fan’s cellphone and tried calling her ex on it. (Josh, if you’re reading this, you got washed, buddy — everyone at Madison Square Garden hates you.) See also: him singing “Happy Birthday” to his friend Florence. Florence Welch, of the Machine ? No. Florence Pugh, his co-star in the upcoming film “Don’t Worry Darling”? Also no. Florence, daughter of Rob Stringer, chairman of Sony Music Group? Yes.

This is the essence of his appeal — his is not a top-down sort of fame. He’s the approachable but protective friend, the one who leads with good judgment and progressive wholesomeness. (At previous shows, he’s helped people come out, or to confess their love.) That’s part of why, even though public discussion of Styles often centers on his dating life or the ways he flirts with gender fluidity, his actual show is conventional and chaste. The most risqué bit was when he explained how the in-the-round performance would work. Sometimes, “we’ll be ass to face,” he said. “I’ll be sure to distribute face and ass equally throughout the show — there’s plenty to go around.” It was cheeky. Even “Watermelon Sugar,” his lightly erotic hit, was dry.

ZOLADZ Styles did not call any exes at our show, but he did a funny bit where he attempted to count all of the “golf dads” in the audience — 34, apparently. He also broke some solemn “bad news” about something that had happened just before the show: “I’ve blown my tongue on some soup.” So yes, effortlessly charismatic banter, and he works every corner of the stage. The set and wardrobe were a bit more minimal than I anticipated; I expected at least one costume change. But I would describe the look he was going for, in a red-and-white-striped jumpsuit, as “sexy candy cane.” The fashion, the fans, the force of personality — it feels like we’re talking about everything but the music here, which is perhaps telling. How did the songs strike you, Jon, and did you get anything out of them that you don’t get on his records?

CARAMANICA Basically, we’re of opposite opinions on Styles’s albums — I’m more partial to the most recent one, “Harry’s House,” and I know you lean more toward the previous one, “Fine Line.” When the songs were … funkier — and I use that designation extremely loosely — his performance felt more full. I’m thinking “Satellite,” and also “Cinema,” both from the new album — the rhythm section is in the lead, but doesn’t overpower him. I also liked what he did with “Adore You,” melting the chorus into more of a restrained tease. But when he went unadorned, like on “Matilda,” the air in the room felt heavier. And “Sign of the Times,” the first Styles solo hit, was ponderous, a karaoke take on mid-1970s power-mope.

ZOLADZ I sometimes detect a divide between the music Styles wants to make — the big, bold, if somewhat generic-sounding ’70s-style rock of his first album — and the more pop-oriented fare that better suits his personality. Not surprisingly, the songs that worked best for me live were the ones that manage to satisfy both of those impulses, like the groovy, Tame Impala-esque “Daylight” or the still-ubiquitous hit “As It Was.” I wish he’d ended the set on that note, but regrettably he had one more song to play after that, the stomping, Led-Zeppelin-cosplay rocker “Kiwi,” an unfortunate live staple that I consider one of his weakest songs. But, as ever, he seemed to relish playing the role of bombastic rock star, even if the material itself didn’t always electrify.

I found it refreshing, though, that Styles is not shying away from his former group on this tour: The first song on his preperformance playlist is One Direction’s “Best Song Ever” — much to the shrieking delight of the thousands of fans who sang along to every word — and during his set he actually played a louder and more rock-oriented version of One Direction’s 2011 hit “What Makes You Beautiful,” which happens to be from an album that his former bandmate Louis Tomlinson recently called a disparaging word we can’t print here. How did you feel about Styles’s raucous 1D cover, Jon?

CARAMANICA That was one of the musical high points, if not the peak. It was as if a rowdy bar band momentarily inhabited Styles’s very deliberately understated crew. On Saturday, too, people absolutely lost it when the opening bars of “Best Song Ever” hit right after the conclusion of Blood Orange’s temperate and tasteful opening set. It was the purest release of pent-up demand that I’ve witnessed in quite some time. And that’s how the rest of the night went, too — demand leading supply. Fervor without feeling (and certainly without friction). An arena-size canvas merely doodled on with pencil.

And for the record, a friend lent me her pink-and-white boa for a few songs — it didn’t help.

Jon Caramanica is a pop music critic for The Times and the host of the Popcast . He also writes the men's Critical Shopper column for Styles. He previously worked for Vibe magazine, and has written for the Village Voice, Spin, XXL and more. More about Jon Caramanica

How Harry Styles's Love on Tour won the culture wars

love on tour total shows

By Olivia Ovenden

Harry Styles Love On Tour

This week the European leg of Harry Styles's much-publicised Love on Tour concludes in Lisbon. It's the final stop on a trip promoting the now Mercury Prize-nominated album, Harry's House , which has seen the singer turn his concerts into a space that holds a mirror up to his audience, making the show as much about them as him.

In and amongst the wide-leg trousers and wild-eyed dancing there have been stories of Styles helping to orchestrate marriage proposals and gender reveals from the stage, consoling fans who have been cheated on or helping others come out in a ceremony officiated under a rippling rainbow flag . For the thousands who have bought tickets, Love on Tour has been a travelling circus filled with the kind of innocent joy that pop music can inspire, as well as a place where Styles's young fans can come as they are and, for a few hours, unburden themselves from the weight of the world.

As one of the biggest pop stars on the planet, Harry Styles 's repeated signposting of his concerts as a place of progressivism has served as a powerful antidote to the ongoing culture wars around identity politics. The tour has been punctuated with moments of the singer proudly demonstrating his beliefs, holding up flags borrowed from members of the crowd to pledge his allegiance to everything from Black Lives Matter to bisexual visibility . Following the school shooting in Uvalde, Texas in May, Styles announced he would be donating $1M from ticket sales to gun safety group Everytown, and in the wake of landmark American abortion legislation Roe v Wade being overturned the following month, Styles plucked a fan's sign that read My Body My Choice from a crowd member, carefully placing it in front of his drummer's kit.

These incidents can be easily waved away as cheap ploys for viral moments and trending stories, but Styles' brand of pop-timisim has a ring of authenticity that is central to his appeal. On matters of identity, sexuality and even love, he clearly shares the open-minded liberalism of his young fans. The fact he's celebrated it with many of their parents present has made that all the more powerful.

These moments of on-stage activism have become increasingly prevalent as young fans look to musicians to reflect their views and be a champion for the social causes of their generation. This shift in expectations means that silence on the news of the day is read at best as ignorance and at worst as complicity. At Glastonbury this year, artists including Kendrick Lamar and Olivia Rodrigo loudly aligned themselves with the pro-choice movement when performing; calling out Putin and standing with Ukraine has been a recurrent theme at concerts since Russia's invasion. In 2022, it's hard to believe that just over five years ago Taylor Swift kept tight-lipped about her views on Donald Trump in the lead up to the 2016 election, fearing speaking out could alienate some of her fanbase.

For Styles, who graced the cover of Vogue in a dress , and has launched his own line of iridescent male-polish , championing progressive ideas about identity is hardly a surprising move. Here is a star whose boundary-pushing style and transgressive gender expression has earned him comparisons to the likes of Prince and David Bowie , but like those pioneers before him his chameleonic style has also allowed him to be a blank canvas that fans can project ideas onto. Thanks to stylist Harry Lambert and an array of Gucci garms , his tour wardrobe has been a fantastical mishmash of oversized proportions and trippy patterns, giving his shows a wild, permissive atmosphere perfect for the messages he is trying to communicate.

A cynic might ask whether Harry Styles, or indeed any pop star, proclaiming their beliefs in front of a rapt audience is genuinely meaningful, but watching the reaction to his actions in the crowds has been undeniably powerful. The young people forming conga lines and arriving in a mass of pink cowboy hats and feather boas have seen many of the values and causes they care about ridiculed and questioned in the wider culture for years. Love on Tour has been a rebuttal to all that: proof that acceptance and tolerance are not hollow ideals, and a welcome reminder that sometimes the best way to kill your critics is with kindness.

Love On Tour: How Harry Styles' biggest fans turned his concerts into personal fashion shows

By Zoe Christen Jones

October 29, 2021 / 8:15 PM EDT / CBS News

On Saturday night, the streets of New York will be filled to the brim with costumed faces ready to celebrate the weekend of Halloween in their best finery. But outside of Madison Square Garden, almost 21,000 artfully-dressed Harry Styles fans will clog the streets, dressed to the nines in what can only be described as disco/70s chic, ready to dance and sing the night away. The event: Harryween.

Marketed as a black tie, fancy dress occasion, Harryween is a collection of two Madison Square Garden shows celebrating the end of Harry Styles' Love On Tour, a 41-show national tour for "Fine Line," Styles' sophomore album. But Styles' fans haven't just been waiting around for the Halloween dress code. Instead, each tour stop has been filled to the brim with fans in black tie, psychedelic streetwear and anything that reminds them of their favorite artist. After spending almost a year uncertain their dates with Styles would ever happen due to the coronavirus pandemic, these fans aren't just dressing for the singer.

Now, they're dressing for each other.

Harry Styles

The tour was originally scheduled to take place in 2020 following the December 2019 release of "Fine Line." But the COVID-19 pandemic shuttered all planned tours, leaving fans uncertain when things ever went back to normal. With nothing but time on their hands, Styles' fans turned to what they could control: their outfits.

"I really think if it wasn't for quarantine, there wouldn't have been this level of commitment by everyone to go all-in on their outfits," fan Bailey Stabler told CBS News.

The 22-year-old attended a show in Detroit and planned to wear a tailored mint green suit — four months before she secured tickets. Her outfit's main inspiration came both from Styles' fashion and the looks she saw from other girls on social media.

"There's always been a handful of girls that dress up as either their favorite song or singer, especially in the One Direction days," Stabler said. "But I've never seen it to this level, where almost the whole arena dressed up."

Stabler called the interest in dressing up for the concerts a "domino effect," first with fans posting what they would've worn to their shows, the costumes going from simple outfits to elaborate get-ups. Once the tour dates were officially rescheduled, "everyone just fully committed," Stabler said. "I think it's a pretty amazing thing to see. Honestly, I've never seen a better-looking crowd."

The fashion that dominates Styles' concerts, while different, somehow cohabitates a specific aesthetic. Many of the easily identifiable themes center around 70s era fashion.

img-7590.jpg

Overall the looks are a contradictory, cohesive mishmash. There are feathers, cowboy hats, sequins, bell bottoms, boas, high heels, the occasional full banana suit, sunflowers, cherries, watermelons, "But Daddy I Love Him" Little Mermaid t-shirts and re-imagined Styles outfits from award shows, past concerts and even paparazzi shots. To put it frankly, there's a vibe.

And Stabler's not the only one who took inspiration from time off and a TikTok feed.

Hailee Miller , an assistant fashion designer , spent almost three months making matching outfits for herself and her husband to attend a Love On Tour show. Miller, who lives in Las Vegas, bought the tickets in anticipation of her 21st birthday. Now 22, she said the process of hand making her outfits gave her something to look forward to while she was stuck at home. Miller even flew to California to pick the perfect Emilio Pucci-inspired print for their matching looks, an idea she told CBS News she manifested during quarantine.

"From there, I kind of just drew up an inspiration board, and then I made the pattern, cut out the garments and sewed them," Miller told CBS News. "I know it sounds silly, but I literally tried to manifest these outfits and manifest a good vibe towards them."

Miller credits Styles' role as a fashion icon for encouraging a sense of freedom and artistic expression at his shows. "He's paved the way for so many other people to freely dress how they want. I feel like his fans feel comfortable and then want to match his energy and be there with him, with his music and his fashion."

While Style's fans may be taking concert attire to new heights, this type of influence is common surrounding pop stars — especially artists who appeal to younger and female audiences, according to style expert Michelle Washington.

Washington cites artists like Elton John, Prince, Joni Mitchell, Stevie Nicks, Janet Jackson and even pianist Liberace as stars whose direct or indirect influences can all be seen in Styles' looks.

View this post on Instagram A post shared by @harrystyles

"Music is always telling the zeitgeist of the times," Washington said. "Musicians will dress a way, and that will trickle down into how we socially represent ourselves. So during the 60s and 70s, that was the space race and we definitely saw that in  mod fashion. And now we have a different time and era, and Harry is being reflective of the zeitgeist of our times."

Washington also points to an increased frenzy of inspiration that can come from artists with primarily young audiences. Styles, who got his start in the boy-band One Direction, has maintained a majority teen and young adult audience, even as his music has expanded with larger themes of drug use, heartbreak and sexual identity.

The Reach

Gabrielle Saydee , a 24-year-old designer, has attended almost eight shows this tour alone and is still planning on trying to find tickets for Styles' last performance in Los Angeles.

She and her friends planned different matching outfits for every show they attended, sewing tops and additives to their costumes to look their best. Her 70s inspired looks are her favorites, according to Saydee, because they are so similar to the aesthetic of "Fine Line." Her efforts paid off at one concert — Styles sang "Happy Birthday" with the crowd at Madison Square Garden for Saydee's friend, a moment that went viral on TikTok.

Since the tour was first postponed, hashtags relating to Styles' concerts and style have millions of views, with girls even workshopping which of several planned outfits they should end up wearing.

Perhaps some of the most fervent participants are those who didn't get concert tickets, still commenting and making "what if" videos on TikTok, or waiting hours in box office lines for a chance to enter the venues.

This intensity is matched online, with fans desperately consuming clips of the concert and snapshots of what people wore, including Styles himself.

Emma S mart, a 28-year old Styles fan, was in awe of this intensity when she created a viral TikTok roundup of Love On Tour outfits called "I Adore What You Wore To Love On Tour." The videos, which are posted after each concert ends, feature some of the best outfits from each city and have received tens of thousands of views.

"The response that means the most to me are the ones where people thank me for showcasing a variety of styles, body shapes, and representations," Smart said. "I think the reason this has been so warmly received is because it's almost like we're all showing up to these little videos I make online to give each other permission. Permission to be 'extra,' or excited. Permission to just feel good about ourselves for a moment."

"Harry Styles uses fashion as an outlet for joy and after living through the unprecedented times we're currently in, I think the fans are bursting at the seams to have an excuse to be joyful," she said. "We've waited almost two years for this tour to happen, why not show up in a floor-length gown with a feather trim?"

Roughly 30 hours before Harryween begins, the streets are already beginning to show signs of the coming crowd. A four-block queue has emerged on 34th Street, as fans without tickets try to score some of the merchandise from the concert. Others from out of town have shown up early to take photos in front of the famous Madison Square Garden sign, which displays a poster of Styles with the words "Sold Out" in bright lights.

But beyond the bustle, the most interesting thing about the crowds is the energy. Fans can be heard discussing outfits they saw on TikTok the week before, stressing whether their high-heeled boots will hold up on the rain-slicked streets or if the extraordinarily long line at Party City is worth getting a backup boa.

Whether the fans have been listening to Styles since his One Direction days, or first heard his voice in his latest radio hits, all the concertgoers and fans that spoke to CBS News agreed that one of their favorite things about Love On Tour — and the major driving force behind their outfits — was the sense of community they received from those around them.

"All you heard walking around the arena was people complimenting each other's outfits and saying how good they looked and how everyone loved each other's outfits," Stabler said. "Other concerts I've been to, no one really speaks or stops someone to compliment them. It was one of the nicest and kind of heartwarming things I've witnessed recently. I think most of the fans take Harry's stance of 'Treat People With Kindness' to heart and spread as much kindness around as they can."

For Saydee, Styles' concerts have become more than just an event, but the place where she's met some of her best friends. Even for the fans she's never met, the time they've spent creating outfits makes her feel connected to people even across the world.

View this post on Instagram A post shared by gabrielle saydee (@gabbbizzle)

"Never in my life have I been complimented like I was at my concert," Miller said. "I felt like my work was really appreciated. Everybody in line was just talking to each other and it was just amazing. It's a huge community and it's  the people I always want to be surrounded by."

Smart said one of the things she enjoys the most about the concerts will always be how many people Styles manages to bring together with his music.

"My favorite thing is seeing how all of these different people, that live in different states, that grew up in different ways, in different generations, that hold different truths, are all people that love the same thing," Smart said. "They're all gathering together in arenas across the country, with their masks on and their favorite outfits, to listen to their favorite music, to experience the same thing together. There's something so beautifully human about that."

Harry Styles at Wembley Stadium gig review: smash show was defined by the fans

love on tour total shows

The first thing you notice at a Harry Styles gig is the colour. Similar to when thousands of football fans stream down the iconic Wembley Way in their home colours before a match, the exuberant flood of fans who skipped their way along the path to the stadium on Tuesday night were a dazzling sea of bright hues and fancy dress. Stocks of pink cowboy hats and feather boas in the vicinity were critically low.

The former One Direction member’s first gig of four at the venue this week – totalling six nights there across last summer and this – was more of an event than just a concert. Styles played an exquisite and seamless two-hour show, but everything happening around it in the stadium was just as important and gripping. Costumes were made, online friends met for the first time, fans held up signs asking Styles to help them come out as gay, and a heartwarming community came together to celebrate.

In recent weeks, stadium tours from Beyoncé and The Weeknd have rolled through the UK, both full to the brim with maximalist stage productions, choreographed routines and thematic throughlines. Styles’ Love On Tour show , meanwhile, is gimmick-free. The singer was wise to realise that the people in the crowd here were the real show as much as he himself.

love on tour total shows

“Feel free to be who you’ve always wanted to be in this room tonight,” he told the crowd half way through the set, with the request emphatically heeded. Before the chorus of Satellite kicked in, a hundred or so fans rushed in formation to the spacious back of the standing area in an organised routine. Forming a circle, they all then ran into the middle for the world’s kindest mosh pit. Later, a massive conga line formed, before fans lay on their backs en masse and stared at the night sky during Fine Line. To foster such a safe space for people to be so unashamedly themselves was Styles’ greatest feat.

In a setlist only lightly shuffled around from his shows at the venue last summer, Styles travelled from the classic rock leanings of his 2017 debut to last year’s tropical, groovy Harry’s House. Alongside an ecstatically received rendition of One Direction’s What Makes You Beautiful and the still-potent pop smash Watermelon Sugar, the show’s most affecting moment came on Matilda, with the heart-tugging acoustic number showing Styles’ vocals at their best as they ducked and weaved between harmonies from his excellent bandmates.

Rolling out largely the same show in the same venue for the second summer in a row also felt unimportant when such a hungry and unrelenting appetite for a spectacle this uncomplicated, joyful and life-affirming still exists. Running through As It Was, a song as glued to the top of the charts as last time he played Wembley, Styles barely sang a word. Instead, he let the crowd yell it for him, ending a show that felt like it was theirs all along.

Neil Young reunites with Crazy Horse after a decade, performs double encore

love on tour total shows

On Thursday night, magic happened in Tennesseee.

Singer-songwriter Neil Young and rock band Crazy Horse came together to perform their hits over a two-hour show at FirstBank Amphitheater on their first tour together in a decade.

The 2024 "Love Earth Tour" features the now 78-year-old singer alongside the Los Angeles rock band yet again.

Canadian singer-songwriter Young, best known for songs "Heart of Gold," "Harvest Moon" and "Old Man," released the album "Fu##in' Up" with Crazy Horse on April 25, featuring nine rock 'n' roll tracks. The two have released 15 studio albums together.

Young and Crazy Horse kicked off their brief 16-stop tour on April 24 in San Diego and will continue with upcoming stops in Virginia, New Jersey, New York and more.

Thursday's concert in Franklin was originally slated for Wednesday evening, but was postponed by a day due to  inclement weather .

But Thursday night brought the calm after the storm; the evening was serene.

Neil Young returns to Spotify after 2-year hiatus following Joe Rogan controversy

After opener Reverend Billy and the Church of Stop Shopping , a musical performance art experience that draws from religion, Young hit the stage.

The set-up featured a backdrop with a galloping horse and giant speaker cabinets and road cases, the same ones Young took on the road with him for his "Rust Never Sleeps" tour in 1978.

Young appeared in a striped cap, a denim work shirt that featured paint splatters and a Spartan Truck Equipment patch, black pants, black shoes and of course, his guitar, Old Black .

He mentioned the venue's beauty multiple times — a stage nestled in the woods of Graystone Quarry in Thompson’s Station.

"How you doin out there? Nice to see you," Young said to the Franklin crowd.

"What a beautiful place. You guys are very lucky to have this place."

Alongside Young was the band, comprised of 80-year-old Billy Talbot on bass and 80-year-old Ralph Molina on drums. They also have a new member, Micah Nelson on guitar.

Nelson, Willie Nelson 's 33-year-old son, took over for the band's previous guitarist Nils Lofgren earlier this year.

Throughout the show, Neil Young and the band played a 17-song set, full with jam sessions and occasional harmonies. Young was energized and playful, captivating the crowd with his trademark nasally, emotional voice.

The set list was mostly comprised of older hits, like 1969's "Cinnamon Girl" and 1972's "Heart of Gold."

The band didn't play any songs from their recent album; the most recent song was 1996's "Scattered (Let's Think About Livin')." Nelson's big moment came during the tune; he traded his guitar to play a swinging keyboard that descended from the ceiling.

Young's guitar playing—both electric and acoustic—was adept and agile. Though Young shared in January he has been playing guitar with arthritis in his hand for years, audience members wouldn't have guessed.

He played the blues on song "Vampire Blues," hitting guitar licks with a precision like Stevie Ray Vaughan's. He also performed drawn-out, warping guitar solos on songs like "Like a Hurricane" and "Powderfinger."

Between songs, Young would hand his guitar off to his techs (who all wore white lab coats), but was audibly uncomfortable until he had a guitar in his arms yet again.

The night's concert walked the line between a Young that leaned into classic, grunge rock 'n' roll with Crazy Horse and a Young that gently cooed with Crosby, Stills & Nash in '69, strumming an acoustic.

Young pulled off the balancing act.

Here are some of the top moments from the night.

Neil Young opens with 'Cortez the Killer,' sings newly released verse

On a purple-lit stage, Neil Young and Crazy Horse kicked off the show with the 1975 song "Cortez the Killer."

The first lyrics from Young brought cheers from the audience as he sang, "He came dancing across the water / With his galleons and guns."

Young surprised fans at the first concert of the tour by singing unreleased lyrics to the song, ones he said did not record due to a power outage on the recording console in 1975.

Young found the lyric manuscript, he said in an interview mid-April this year.

The verse was lost for nearly 50 years. Young sang the verse again in Franklin.

“I floated on the water / I ate that ocean wave / Two weeks after the slaughter/ I was living in a cave / They came too late to get me / But there’s no one here to set me free / From this rocky grave / To that snowed-out ocean wave.”

Neil Young calls on local non-profits to support his eco-friendly mission

Neil Young has been vocal about his environmental efforts throughout his career .

In 1985, Young helped establish the annual Farm Aid concerts . In 2022, he released album "World Record," an album that focuses on climate change. Later that year, Young said he refused to play venues that are supported by factory farms .

The environmentalism was felt at his Franklin show.

Upon entering the concert, fans saw a series of tents and tables from local environmental organizations all hand picked by Young, including Tennessee Local Food . The organizations attended the concert and chatted with fans about their missions.

Young calls it the "LOVE EARTH Village."

At different stops on the tour, hundreds of non-profits working for sustainability and social equity will join to chat about issues like organic farming, wildlife protection, Native American rights and climate change solutions.

According to a venue employee, Young also changed the menu for the venue's offerings on Thursday, opting for more eco-friendly options (Coke products were nowhere to be seen).

On a handout at the venue, Young wrote, "Support your friends, support your land, and support the people that want to care for the land.

"The revolution starts with us. The revolution starts with you."

Neil Young goes acoustic mid-show, takes stage alone

At one point, Young took an empty stage, traded Old Black for an acoustic, and donned the harmonica around his neck.

He sang songs, "Comes a Time," "Heart of Gold" and "Human Highway" onstage alone, leaning into his folk singer-songwriter roots.

Despite the occasional hoot or holler in the audience, a hush crept over the amphitheater as Young sang, played plucky guitar and showcased his harmonica skills between verses.

It was a gentler, softer and more intimate side to the evening.

"Heart of Gold" stood out among the acoustic section.

Young sang his biggest hit: "Keep me searching / For a heart of gold / I've been a miner / For a heart of gold."

An encore and...another encore

Before the encore, Young ended his set with song "Hey Hey, My My (Into the Black)," leaving the audience with the classic and singing, "Hey hey, my my / Rock and roll can never die."

And it didn't die just then, Young and the band returned to the stage to play "Roll Another Number (For the Road)" as their encore.

After the song finished, the audience didn't stop cheering. Young and company came back to deliver a second encore, this time three songs long.

For encore two, they performed "Danger Bird," "Don't Cry No Tears" and "Sedan Delivery," ending the night on a grungy rock 'n' roll note that included pink lights and plenty of reverb.

Afterwards, the band and Young gathered arm-in-arm in a single spotlight and gave their final bow.

Olivia Rodrigo suffers embarrassing wardrobe malfunction during fitting song

Olivia Rodrigo suffered a wardrobe malfunction on the 'Guts' world tour during 'Love Is Embarrassing.'

Andrew Korpan

Olivia Rodrigo and Guts world tour logo with concert crowd background.

During the first of her four-night stay at the O2 Arena in London, England on her “Guts” world tour , Olivia Rodrigo suffered a wardrobe malfunction.

The “Good 4 U” singer took it in stride. It probably helped that the moment occurred during the most appropriate song possible.

In videos captured from Rodrigo's recent London show, she's seen suffering a wardrobe malfunction. Her top began falling off, even snapping in the back, during “Love Is Embarrassing.”

As it happens, Rodrigo luckily notices. She held down the top from the front as one of her backup dancers desperately tried to remedy the situation. But Rodrigo continued her performance, skipping away and making it harder for the dancer to catch up.

While the moment would be embarrassing for most, Rodrigo did seem to take it in stride. She is even seen smiling in the video. Perhaps she appreciated the irony in the moment. She does appear to yell something at the end of the clip that sounds like “This is f**king embarrassing!” to cap off the moment.

“Love Is Embarrassing” is usually the eighth song played during Rodrigo's “Guts” world tour sets. That means this moment took place about one-third into her show. Hopefully, Olivia Rodrigo doesn't suffer any more wardrobe malfunctions during the rest of the tour.

Olivia Rodrigo's 2024 ‘Guts' tour

Olivia Rodrigo performing on the 'Guts' world tour on March 9, 2024.

The “Guts” world tour is Rodrigo's second headlining concert tour. It is in support of her Grammy-nominated second album, Guts. Like her previous album, Guts was up for Best Pop Vocal Album and Album of the Year. She lost both categories to Taylor Swift's Midnights album.

In a big move, Rodrigo has made the leap from playing theaters to arenas. On her second tour, Rodrigo will visit some of the most iconic arenas in the world including Madison Square Garden and the O2. It is a huge accomplishment that many artists likely take years to achieve.

Recently, Rodrigo announced a fifth leg of the tour that will visit Asia and Australia. As of the time of this writing, the “Guts” world tour will conclude on October 22, 2024. This will come after four shows in Sydney, Australia.

Olivia Rodrigo first gained notoriety for her roles on television. She starred in Disney Channel's Bizaardvark from 2016-19 and the first two seasons of Disney+'s High School Musical: The Musical: The Series.

She released her debut single, “Drivers License,” on January 8, 2021. The song launched her to superstardom. She then released “Deja Vu” and “Good 4 U” which built hype for her debut album, Sour.

Sour was released on May 21, 2021. The album was a smash hit and immediately made Rodrigo one of the industry's hottest stars. At the Grammys, it won Best Pop Vocal Album but lost Album of the Year.

On June 30, 2023, Rodrigo made her return with new material, releasing “Vampire,” which she performed at the 2024 Grammys. This was the lead single for her sophomore album, Guts. “Bad Idea Right?” followed ahead of the album's release. “Get Him Back!” was later released after the album.

Lucero frontman Ben Nichols talks about the band's evolution, Pennsylvania tour dates

'i love having that freedom to explore and go a different place,' singer ben nichols said.

love on tour total shows

Being beloved but not a household name has served Lucero well.

"Over the last 24 (years), we've been really lucky we never got too famous, so we were always able to do exactly what we wanted to do at any moment," Lucero frontman and lyricist Ben Nichols said. "Whatever really caught our attention. Over the years different influences have come and gone, and we've gone different directions."

The Memphis band got championed first by country-punk aficionados, who stayed loyal as the fan base grew, and Lucero ventured more into alt-country and embraced soul influences, meandering into more straightforward guitar rock with piano seasoning.

"I've always written the songs and I feel like they're always coming from the same heart, the same place, whether we're doing a more soulful Memphis thing with a horn section or more country-ish type stuff or straight rock and roll or indie rock," Nichols said in a telephone interview. "Whatever genre we're into at the time, I like to think that it still sounds like Lucero, but I love having that freedom to explore it and go a different place."

That exploration takes fuller shape on a Lucero tour launching May 16 in Indiana, before the tour bus steers toward Pennsylvania and shows May 23 at Titusville Iron Works Tap House , June 2 at Mr. Smalls Theatre in Millvale and June 6 at the Harrisburg Midtown Arts Center .

Need a break? Play the USA TODAY Daily Crossword Puzzle.

Prior to the tour came a one-off hometown show in Memphis with just Nichols and pianist Rick Steff.

"We've been doing a few stripped-down shows with just piano and acoustic guitar, so that's something kind of just for fun," Nichols said. "We might video it, though, and do a record like that and re-address some of the old catalog in this nice kind of intimate format. But the tour starts in mid-May; we hit Indiana, Kentucky and work our way up to Titusville and Pittsburgh and stuff later on."

Steff's piano plunking, elevating songs like 2023's "She Leads Me," exemplify the evolution of Lucero, which in addition to Nichols includes original members Brian Venable on guitar, Roy Berry on drums and John C. Stubblefield on bass.

"Lucero's been around for 24 years and Rick's been with us for about half the time," Nichols said. "We'd been a rowdy rock and roll band – just two guitars, bass and drums – for the first half of our existence and had kind of run that into the ground, and when Rick joined up it kind of gave us a new lease on life and got me excited about the band again."

Make no mistake, a guitar-driven sound still embodies a roadhouse rowdiness, evidenced on the 2023 album's "Should've Learned by Now," which will supply a balanced portion of this tour's carefully crafted setlist.

"That record came out over a year ago, but we haven't put out anything new since, so, yeah, we're still supporting that album," Nichols said. "It's funny, some of the songs kind of stick with you and some fade into the background a bit. So, we're playing stuff off the new record, but we're not doing everything off the new record. We have a few that have now been incorporated into an overarching full catalog set that we usually do. We're playing stuff from our very earliest recordings all the way to "Should've Learned by Now," and everything in between. So, some of the new record, but we're not focused on it."

The album comes out swinging with “One Last F.U.”

"That one we will play for sure," Nichols said. "That's a fun one. Every night I have to tell the audience it's not about them. You can take this F.U. and pass it along to whoever needs it. Just take it and put it out into the world and spread some love. I don't know where I came up with that line but it kind of stuck. I thought that actually would make a ridiculous song. So, it's just a general F.U. not directed at anyone. I don't have a grudge or anything specific."

Inside look: How Memphis roots-rockers Lucero's album came together during COVID-19

The guitar-ripping second track, "Macon If We Make It," addresses storms of the literal and figurative sense, drawing its title from an unforgettable and potentially perilous night on the road.

"We were in Georgia on tour and a hurricane was coming through and we were trying to get to the next show," Nichols said. "We've crossed paths with hurricanes a few times in our career. They can mess things up. But in that case, we got lucky and made it just fine, but it felt like it was bearing down right on top of us for a little bit. But we didn't get whisked away to Oz or anything like that."

A lyrical theme threaded through "Should've Learned By Now" finds Nichols, on behalf of the band, acknowledging they've all screwed things up, and still make mistakes, but are trying their best and realize that's fine.

"Absolutely. That's kind of wrapped up in the album title," Nichols said. "There's a lot we should have learned by now, a lot of things we should have fixed or readdressed. But the one thing I know is we kind of kept forging ahead and never quit. And we're still plowing through and making our way. We're resigned to knowing we're always going to be screwups and that's always going to be part of us, but so far we can still get away with it."

The five-piece band is living in the moment, savoring the simplicity of playing straight-ahead rock and roll, Nichols said.

"The songs hold up no matter what format of the band is in over time. I like to think the songs are good enough to be interpreted in numerous ways. Like you can take them all the way down to just me and Rick on piano and they still hold up. Or you can add synthesizers, or you can add horns, or whatever, but the songs are still Lucero," Nichols said. "So, there's no telling what the next direction will be. But I'm enjoying this simplified rock and roll bar band kind of thing we're doing. It might just continue in that direction."

Lucero's ability to explore sounds and evolve successfully while continuing to fill concert halls points to a fan base that's loyal and understanding.

"You're exactly right. We're very lucky," Nichols said. "The fans have been super cool and extremely loyal in a lot of cases and willing to come along on that ride with us. And you can tell. Certain albums are fan favorites and certain ones kind of fall by the wayside only for folks who really like the kind of deep cuts. But I don't know if I could do it any other way. I don't know if I could keep making the same-sounding album over and over again. It doesn't sound like a lot of fun to me. It would probably be more lucrative (laughs) and a smarter business choice, but it's not why we got into it in the first place. So, we're very lucky people have been willing to stick with us."

Safe to say, upcoming audiences will include fans who've been on that ride for many years, maybe catching Lucero's 2013 co-billed tour with Titus Andronicus that jam-packed Mr. Smalls Theatre outside Pittsburgh.

"I remember that tour. That was one of the crazier ones maybe, but it was a fun one," Nichols said. "And, yeah, Mr. Smalls is always great. For the Pittsburgh area, that's always been a longtime stomping ground of ours. I don't know how sacrilegious it is to have Lucero play an old former church; somebody's burning somewhere. But they're always super nice to us. It's just kind of cool with that old DIY, no-nonsense, very welcoming, laid-back vibe to it."

The type of venue favored by the youthful music fans Nichols nostalgically salutes in "At the Show" from the 2023 album.

"They say write what you know. Like 'At the Show' is about a bunch of kids – indie rock kids, punk rock kids – putting on shows in DIY venues," Nichols said. "The gears on the street. It's chaos. Everyone is loading in. Nothing is done legally or you don't have permits for anything. But everybody's young and it's fun. And everybody loves the music. That song is trying to capture that spirit."

A quarter-century ago, those kids would have found out about that show from a flier tacked to a telephone pole.

"That's exactly how the Memphis scene was 25 years ago," Nichols said.

Nichols appreciates those kids got older, though didn't necessarily grow up, hence he still writes what he describes as "the maybe-I-drank-too-much-in-a-city bar-all-night-and-I'm-getting-myself-in-trouble-again" type of songs as well. "The innocent and the not-so-innocent," Nichols said. "It's all wrapped up in there."

A Lucero album is a fun listening experience, but fans more fully embrace the experience of a live and loud performance.

"We appreciate them being at the live shows," Nichols said. "That's how we earn our living, hitting the road and getting people actually out and into the venues. I know it's tough on those weeknights but just thank you to the fans for actually coming out and seeing us. Your encouragement keeps us going."

Ten down, forever to go!  Jimmy Fallon  on Tuesday will celebrate 10 years as host of The Tonight Show , and he's marking the milestone by sitting down with ET for a  rETrospective .

The 49-year-old late-night TV host is looking back at some of his most iconic moments in a storied career that began long before he burst onto the national spotlight when he joined Saturday Night Live as a cast member in 1998. ET was right there with him -- well before he was discovered -- when he performed at the Improv for Mary Hart's 15th anniversary party.

Fast-forward to now, and Fallon's become a household name and synonymous with belly laughs. He was named host of The Tonight Show  in 2014, and he's up to the challenge of eclipsing the late Johnny Carson for the longest tenured host of the iconic late-night series.

"Well, this is 10 years. Johnny has 30, so I have 20 more years to go," Fallon quipped. "I feel pretty good. I still love what I do. I love talking to people. I feel like it's getting even more fun because I have grown up with these people now, and I have seen them -- their highs their lows. I've seen bad boyfriends. I've seen good boyfriends. I've seen them get married and have kids and the kids grow up. I mean, I've seen a lot of stuff in the 10 years of The Tonight Show , and I'd love to go on longer and just keep making more memories and making more friends. It's truly a dream come true."

To commemorate the momentous occasion, Fallon will host a primetime NBC special celebrating his 10th anniversary. In his very first Tonight Show monologue, Fallon recalled being a kid and asking his parents if he could stay up late to watch Carson's monologue before going to bed. At times, he said he'd slide over to the side so his parents wouldn't know he was still there, all to catch a glimpse of the first guest.

And here he is now, the face of an iconic NBC franchise.

"I'm very lucky, again, with The Tonight Show . Good things keep happening to the show, and I just want to keep it rolling, keep everyone having fun," he said. "Our whole goal of the show is to make people laugh and to make people happy, and if I can do it for as long as I can, that'll be the best thing for me."

Under his tenure, Fallon's produced countless unforgettable moments. Like in 2015, when Tom Cruise  squared off against Fallon in an epic lip sync battle. Cruise, at the time, picked a current chart-topper for his first selection, getting down in a big way to The Weeknd's "Can't Feel My Face."

"I mean, come on. Tom Cruise practiced this for five hours this day," Fallon recalled. "I wasn't allowed to go into the studio 'cause he's such a perfectionist, and I didn't want to know."

From his memorable Saturday Night Live sketches to landing the role of "camera guy No. 2" on Spin City  to meeting his future wife, Nancy Juvonen, and the mother of their two children while filming the 2005 sports romcom Fever Pitch , Fallon was captivated at the fact ET had been there since the very beginning.

"ET has always been there for me my whole career. You were there before I even did anything. I'm honored. That's a wild trip to memory lane," he said. "I'm lucky. I'm surrounded by great people, supportive people who make me look good and make me funny, they write great jokes. I have the best staff, the best crew, the best camera operators, the best audio, hair and makeup and wardrobe. It's endless. I'm the luckiest guy in the world."

NBC on Tuesday will air a two-hour special at 9 p.m. ET to celebrate Fallon's 10th anniversary as host of The Tonight Show .
