Great tour guide, Michael M. Great hotels. Wish we had more time on the beach, for swim and that we would stop for photo op. Too bad for Maui fires, we would have loved to go to the other side of island- the stay in Kauea was hurried and rush/rush.

It was a good trip. We saw a lot in all 4 islands, the accommodations in the hotels in Hawaii, Maui and Kauai were fantastic. The hotel in Honolulu (Twin Fin) was in need of updating. The location was good and the food good, but the room was without a chair and was a little seedy. The excursions we went on were fabulous. Loved going from island to island but were disappointed that no accommodations were made to get back from some of the excursions. We were not comfortable with having to find a cab to get back from whale watching or the sunset cruise and elected not to go. There should also be recommendations made for getting to the hotel from the airport and help with getting back to the airport at the end of the trip. All in all, a very good trip, good sights, good food and the group on the tour were wonderful.

Bamba Travel was the only tour operator which responded and agreed to help me plan my tour in Hawaii. Although I would have liked a more thoroughly organised tour like pick up from the cruise terminal and transport to the Kualoa ranch organised, I had to take the public bus by myself. It was a bit daunting but Bamba gave me some instructions. At Hawaii it quite easy and safe to take public transport during the day. Bamba was helpful at every step. A bit slow with regards to correspondence bec of time differences as they are in the USA but they would respond daily. Thank you Bamba for helping me organise a tailored plan to meet most of my needs. I had a great time in Hawaii.

All in all, a very badly organised tour, especially considering how much I payed. To start with, despite providing my airline details, no hotel shuttle was booked for me. As such, I had to pay $30 out of my own money at the airport for. Day 1: Hanauma Bay Snorkelling - Another poorly organised tour on behalf of Bamba. They gave the tour company the name 'Arthur' instead of 'Alex', however luckily for me they understood my situation and still agreed to take me. Day 2: Boat Ride - I didn't even bother doing this. It is organised for 7am, at a hotel a 50 minute walk from the hostel I was staying at. I did however meet a fellow traveller, that also booked through Bamba, and told me the experience was not the best. As such, I was actually very glad I decided to miss it. Day 3: Waterfall Hike - Actually, this was very good, nothing but positives. The tour guide was amazing, and I had a very enjoyable day Day 4: Pearl Harbour - Due to Bamba (again!) giving the tour company the wrong name, they refused to let me on the bus. As such, I was left at the bus stop with nothing, and waited for about 40 mins hoping that another bus would turn up and let me on. I emailed Bamba telling them how dissapointed I was, and they agreed to rebook it for me. However, I asked them to rebook if for saturday, they instead booked it for friday. As a result of this I has to pay another $30 out of my own money to reschedule tours that I had booked for myself on Friday (my free day). All in all, I would not book this again. I would recommend that you should instead book the hostel (Polynesian Hostel Beach Club), and all subsequent activities yourself.

• Process all applications we receive from acceptance facilities and by mail, and
• Serve customers by appointment only who have urgent travel to a foreign country in the next 14 calendar days, or need a foreign visa in the next 28 calendar days

The U.S. Department of State runs each passport agency and center. An agency and center is different than acceptance facilities which may include post offices, libraries, and local government offices.

Avoid the stress of needing to visit a passport agency or center for urgent travel. Apply early at an  acceptance facility  or  renew by mail .

Steps to Make an Appointment for Urgent Travel

• Go to our  Online Passport Appointment System .
• Enter information about your travel plans to see if you qualify for an appointment. You may make an appointment for up to seven members of your household.
• Enter your email address. We will email you a code which you must enter to continue making an appointment. Check your junk or spam folder if you do not see the code in your inbox.
• Enter your mobile phone number. We will send you a text message with another code you must enter to continue making an appointment.
• Complete the process of scheduling your appointment. 
• Check your email for a message confirming the details of your appointment. The system will hold your appointment for 15 minutes. If you do not confirm your appointment within 15 minutes, you will need to start over.
• If you need to cancel or change the appointment, click the link in the confirmation email to get information about your appointment.

I was born and raised in Honolulu. Here are 7 things I wish tourists knew before they visited Hawaii.

• I was born in Hawaii and spent 18 years living in Honolulu. 
• I wish tourists knew more about our history and how  tourism is displacing Native Hawaiians.
• Visitors should be careful to use terms like "Hawaiian" and "aloha" correctly. 

I spent the first 18 years of my life in Honolulu.

When I tell people that I grew up there, they often ask me what life was like there or what they should do when they visit.

However, Hawaii is home to much more than beautiful beaches, and visitors should take it upon themselves to learn more about the rich history and culture that have shaped the state into what it is today.

Here are seven things I wish people knew before they visited Hawaii so they can be educated, more responsible tourists.

Hawaii is the most culturally diverse state in the US

Growing up in Hawaii, you could take a good look around you, and it would be easy to recognize that Hawaii is a melting pot of cultures.

I'm Japanese, Alaska Native, and white, and many of my friends were also multiracial.

In fact, nearly a quarter of people living in the state identify as multiracial, and more than a third identify as Asian alone, according to the 2023 US Census .

Such cultural diversity trickles down into the food we eat, too. Hawaii is home to foods like spam musubi , manapua, and malasadas, which have all been influenced by the rich mix of immigrant communities.

The term 'Hawaiian' is reserved for those who have native Hawaiian ancestry

I've noticed many people use the term "Hawaiian" to refer to anyone from the state of Hawaii. But a lot of people are surprised to learn that Hawaiian is an ethnicity .

Just as you wouldn't call a white person living in Japan "Japanese," the same principle applies to "Hawaiian."

If you're referring to someone who simply resides in Hawaii without Hawaiian ancestry, it's more accurate to call them a local or resident.

Tourism is displacing Native Hawaiians at a disproportionate rate

According to CBS, every year, around 15,000 Native Hawaiians are left with no choice but to leave Hawaii , in part due to the increasing cost of living.

Growing tourism and expanding luxury housing developments, coupled with a lack of economic opportunities, are making it unfeasible for many to live in the state.

In fact, according to census data obtained in September 2023 , more Native Hawaiians live on the mainland than in the Hawaiian Islands.

Hawaii used to be its own kingdom until the Hawaiian monarchy was overthrown

Before becoming the 50th state, Hawaii was a thriving sovereign nation . Its last queen was Queen Liliuoukalani, who led her kingdom to economic and civic success.

During her reign, Hawaii was recognized by over 80 embassies in the world, and the state enjoyed universal healthcare and a 95% literacy rate.

This all eventually changed when she was arrested and forcefully removed from the throne in 1893 in a US-military-backed coup.

When you litter, it ends up in Hawaii's oceans, threatening marine life and various ecosystems

When you carelessly toss trash on the ground, it'll likely end up polluting the pristine beaches of Hawaii, and there's a good chance you'll encounter it firsthand.

Tragically, it's not uncommon to see marine life like turtles, sea otters, and monk seals trapped in plastic or trying to eat a piece of garbage.

If you have any garbage to dispose of while you're in Hawaii, place it in a trash can.

Your TikTok has the power to ruin a beach

Although it's OK to take plenty of photos and appreciate the beauty of Hawaii , it's important to be mindful about sharing your photos on social media.

Just one viral TikTok or Instagram post promoting a beach or hike can quickly turn a once serene spot into an overcrowded nightmare.

Therefore, it's crucial to consider the potential impact your posts will have and the importance of preserving the beauty of Hawaii for generations to come.

In Hawaii, 'aloha' has a much deeper meaning than 'hello'

You may know that "aloha" is used as a greeting to mean "hello" or "goodbye." But what you may not have realized is that aloha is also a human value that embodies love, peace, compassion, and respect.

The importance of embodying the "aloha spirit" is taught in schools, which I think contributes to the genuinely warm and kindhearted nature of Hawaii's people.

So, if you do plan on visiting Hawaii, it's important to also have aloha for the land and its people.

FBI raids home of Oakland's Mayor Sheng Thao amid political investigations

OAKLAND, Calif. -- Federal authorities raided a home belonging to Oakland Mayor Sheng Thao early Thursday as part of a California investigation that included a search of at least two other houses, officials said.

FBI agents carried boxes out of 80 Maiden Lane, a four-bedroom home that property records link to the first-term mayor, the San Francisco Chronicle reported. Thao's spokesperson Francis Zamora referred inquiries to the FBI.

"The FBI conducted court-authorized law enforcement activity on Maiden Lane in Oakland this morning. We are unable to provide additional information at this time," a bureau statement said.

Agents also conducted searches about three miles to the south at two homes owned by members of the politically influential Duong family that owns the recycling company Cal Waste Solutions, the Chronicle said. The firm has been investigated over campaign contributions to Thao and other elected city officials, the local news outlet Oaklandside reported in 2020.

One of the properties is owned by Andy Duong and the other is connected to David and Linda Duong, according to records cited by the Chronicle.

Phone messages and emails seeking comment on the raid from Cal Waste Solutions officials were not immediately returned. Personal phone numbers for members of the Duong family could not be found.

Thao, 38, is facing a recall election less than two years into her term as mayor. The city clerk's office last week notified leaders behind the recall effort that they had gathered enough verified signatures to qualify for the ballot in November.

Increased crime and budgetary problems have challenged Thao since she assumed office in January 2023 after a stint on the Oakland City Council.

Maui’s Disaster Recovery Center closes, transitioning to another location

KAHULUI – The County of Maui, in coordination with the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) and the state of Hawaii, announces the official closure of the Disaster Recovery Center (DRC) and the Community Recovery Center (CRC) effective Saturday, June 29, 2024. In their place, the County of Maui Office of Recovery will be hosting a blessing and soft opening on July 3, 2024 at its new location at Lahaina Gateway.

The transition to the new location is vital as it ensures that community agencies presently at the CRC will continue to provide support and assistance to survivors using a scheduling system.

“We are committed to ensuring that survivors of the disaster continue to receive the support they need during this challenging time,” said Hawaii Emergency Management Agency (HI-EMA) State Disaster Recovery Center Coordinator Francis Kau. “The long-term recovery program and Disaster Case Management Program will also remain available to survivors – to help them navigate the road to recovery.”

HI-EMA Administrator James Barros said, “Moving forward, it is crucial that the community understands that FEMA, the state of Hawaii, and Maui County remain dedicated to supporting survivors on their path to recovery. This endeavor is a kakou effort – a collective one. We will persist in our assistance until every individual finds a stable housing solution.”

The collaboration between federal, state, and local agencies will ensure that support and resources continue to be available to those in need.

Famous ‘Hawaii Five-0′ actor dead at 56

HURRICANE, Utah – Actor Taylor Wiley, known for his role in “Hawaii Five-0,” has died. He was 56 years old.

“Hawaii Five O” executive producer Peter M. Lenkov confirmed the actor’s death in an Instagram post on Thursday . He passed away in Hurricane, Utah.

Wiley was a beloved Hawaiian actor and former sumo wrestler and MMA fighter. He played Kamekona Tupuola in “Hawaii Five O” and has also been featured in movies and television shows such as “Forgetting Sarah Marshall” and “Magnum, P.I.”

“T, as I told you many times, I fell in love with you at the first audition. You came in with a towel on your head mopping up sweat, and I was smitten,” Lenkov said in his Instagram post. “You charmed me into making you a regular… on the show… and in my life. You were family. And I will miss you every day, brother.”

No cause of death has been revealed.
