Capitale de l'île, surnommée "Tana" ou la "ville des milles", Antananariivo est située dans la région des Hautes Terres centrales.

Surnommée la "ville d'eau", car réputée pour son eau thérapeutique, Antsirabe est située dans les hautes terres à 1500 mètres d'altitude.

La commune de Miandrivazo au centre ouest de l'île est réputée pour être la ville la plus chaude de Madagascar.

Surnomée "l'île aux femmes", Nosy Ampela est une petite île au large à l'ouest de Madagascar. Cette île plaira aux voyageurs en quête d'aventures et de tourisme vert.

Dans la région de Melaky, Ambatomainty est une commune rurale située sur les hauts plateaux malgaches.

Bekopaka est un petit village de brousse. C'est aussi la porte d'entrée des Tsingy du Bemaraha.

Connue pour son allée des baobabs dans la province de Tuléar, Morondova est l'un des lieux phares à visiter à Madagascar qui associe richesse culturelle et biodiversité.

Antananarivo.

Soyez les bienvenus à Antananarivo . Dès votre arrivée à l’aéroport, vous êtes accueillis et conduits à votre hôtel. Vous pouvez maintenant vous détendre pour récupérer du vol. Si l’heure le permet, pourquoi ne pas allez vous dégourdir les jambes dans la capitale malgache ? C’est un excellent moyen de commencer votre immersion à Madagascar.

Antananarivo – Antsirabe

Vous prenez la route en direction du sud, pour atteindre Antsirabe . En traversant les Hautes Terres centrales, vous découvrez le monde rural de Madagascar , avec de nombreuses rizières et zones de cultures propres. Construites à flanc de colline, les maisons traditionnelles en pisé rouge colorent votre trajet. Vous profitez d’une halte à Ambatolampy , un petit village au pied du massif montagneux de l’Ankaratra, pour découvrir un atelier de fabrication artisanal. Ici sont produits des ustensiles de cuisine en aluminium. En reprenant la route, vous profitez d’un petit tour d’orientation pour vous immerger dans l’atmosphère des Hautes Terre. Des bâtiments coloniaux, de belles maisons Merina et un établissement thermal datant du début du siècle et construit sur la rive du lac Ranomafana sont les preuves de la splendeur passée de la ville thermale d’Antsirabe. Aujourd’hui, la troisième plus grande ville de Madagascar est calme, très propre, et possède un charme certain.

Antsirabe - Miandrivazo

Vous profitez de la matinée pour rendre visite aux artisans locaux : le confiseur artisanal, le tailleur de corne de zébu ou encore le fabricant de miniatures. Vous reprenez ensuite la route pour vous rendre à Miandrivazo . Cette petite ville paisible est l’une des plus chaudes du pays et est située sur le bord de la rivière Mahajilo, un affluent du fleuve Tsiribihina. Le paysage y est splendide, nous vous conseillons fortement de prendre le temps d’admirer le coucher de soleil sur la rivière.

Miandrivazo - Masiakampy - Descente de la Tsiribihina - Nosy Ampela

Aujourd’hui, vous descendez le fleuve Tsiribihina en chaland , un bateau à fond plat. Pour vous rendre à l’embarcadère de Masiakampy, vous parcourez une trentaine de kilomètres de piste, ce qui nécessite environ deux heures de route. Le déjeuner est servi sur le bateau, et vous avez l’occasion de découvrir une faune et une flore sauvages d’une richesse rare. Des plantes endémiques telles que les pachypodiums, aloès, kalanchoes et baobab bordent les rives. En ouvrant l’œil, vous apercevez de nombreuses espèces d’oiseaux, des crocodiles et des lémuriens. Vous découvrez également la vie des riverains en croisant les villages qui longent le fleuve. Vous vous arrêtez à Nosy Ampela pour y passer la nuit.

Nosy Ampela - Ambatomainty

Vous reprenez la descente de la Tsiribihina en chaland après le petit déjeuner. Vous faites un arrêt en milieu de journée pour partir à pied découvrir une immense cascade . Après une ascension à travers la forêt, vous atteignez une jolie piscine naturelle dans laquelle vous pouvez vous baigner. De retour sur le bateau, vous observez tranquillement les oiseaux et repérez les hérons, sarcelles, canards à bosse et martins-pêcheurs. Le déjeuner est servi sur le bateau, puis vous vous arrêtez pour visiter le village de Berevo . En soirée, vous avez l’opportunité d’observer une animation typique avec des chants Sakalava et Cabosses présentée par les villageois.

Ambatomainty - Belo-sur-Tsiribihina - Bekopaka

Avant de remonter sur votre embarcation, vous profitez du petit déjeuner au village. Peu avant midi, alors que votre destination finale, le village de Belo-sur-Tsiribihina , approche, vous remarquez que le lit de la rivière s’élargit et devient sableux, tandis que le relief est plus plat. L’activité fluviale est également plus intense. Après un déjeuner sous forme de pique-nique pris sur le bateau, vous poursuivez votre chemin en 4×4. Ils vous conduisent sur une longue piste sauvage pendant quatre à cinq heures. Au bout du trajet, le village de Bekopaka , porte d’entrée du Parc National des Tsingy de Bemaraha.

Les gorges de la Manambolo et les petits Tsingy

Pour votre première journée dans le Parc National des Tsingy de Bemaraha , vous commencez par explorer en pirogue traditionnelle les gorges de Manambolo, puis les grottes creusées dans la falaise. Vous pénétrez ensuite dans des grottes creusées dans la falaise, vestiges des nécropoles de la tribu « Vazimba », les premiers habitants de Madagascar. En milieu de journée, vous atteignez les petits Tsingy. Le Parc National des Tsingy de Bemaraha est classé au patrimoine mondial de l’UNESCO pour son caractère exceptionnel. Les Tsingy sont d’impressionnants pics de calcaires dont les plus hauts peuvent atteindre trente mètres !

Les Grands Tsingy

Cette seconde journée dans le Parc National des Tsingy de Bemaraha vous conduit aux Grands Tsingy . Vous vous rendez en voiture à Andamozavaky, à 17 kilomètres de l’entrée du parc pour y entamer votre randonnée. Des chemins tortueux, d’étroits tunnels et un pont suspendu vous conduisent progressivement au sommet. Des belvédères ponctuent votre chemin et offrent des vues remarquables sur l’ensemble du parc. Vous rejoignez votre hôtel émerveillés en fin d’après-midi.

Bekopaka - Morondava

La journée est consacrée au trajet sur piste en direction de Morondava , la capitale du Menabe. La route est longue, mais elle en vaut la peine ! Vous parcourez des paysages variés tels que la savane arbustive typique de l’ouest de Madagascar et une splendide avenue bordée de baobabs. Vous traversez le fleuve en empruntant le bac à Belo-sur-Tsiribihina et croisez des tombeaux sakalava en approchant de votre destination. Capitale du pays de Sakalava de Menabe, Morondova est une destination prisée des voyageurs. Cette ville aux ruelles de sable est très animée et regorge de découvertes culturelles . Pour terminer la journée en beauté, vous admirez le coucher de soleil sur la célèbre allée des Baobabs .

Morondava - Belo-sur-Mer

Aujourd’hui, vous quittez Morondova de bon matin pour vous rendre à Belo-sur-Mer . La piste est très agréable. Vous traversez la brousse, une végétation aux allures squelettiques parfaitement adaptée au climat local et pouvant résister à des sécheresses prolongées. Avant d’arriver à Belo-sur-Mer, vous traversez des salines et le gué de Kabatmena, de plus de 50 mètres de large. Une fois à destination, vous avez le plaisir de découvrir un très agréable village de pêcheurs du peuple Vezo. Flânez au bord des eaux limpides pour observer la fabrication des boutres, des voiliers traditionnels en bois. C’est ici que se trouve l’un des chantiers navals les plus actifs de la côte ouest du pays.

Belo-sur-Mer

Aujourd’hui, profitez d’une journée libre à Belo-sur-Mer pour vous détendre et explorer l’ un des plus beaux villages de pêcheurs de la côte ouest de Madagascar . Ici, vous pouvez observer la diversité des sublimes paysages marins : lagons, lagunes, dunes et îlots. Le lodge dans lequel vous séjournez est en mesure de vous proposer de nombreuses activités, qu’elles soient nautiques ou terrestres, selon vos préférences.

Dîner et nuit en ecolodge

Belo-sur-Mer - Manja

Il vous reste une matinée en toute liberté pour profiter du superbe lagon de Belo-sur-Mer, avant de reprendre la route. Vous quittez la côte pour traverser les paysages arides des terres Sakalava et leurs forêts sèches . En milieu d’après-midi, vous atteignez votre gîte au cœur de la brousse ou votre bivouac du district de Manja , dans la région de Menabe. Au 19ème siècle, Manja, qui signifie à la fois « noirâtre » et « joli » en malgache, était la capitale d’un petit royaume. Vous reconnaîtrez les femmes de cette région à leur coiffure traditionnelle tressée en plusieurs petits chignons appelée « Dokodoko ».

Trajet : 105 km de piste – 4h30 de route Dîner et nuit en hôtel ou en bivouac

Manja - Andavadoaka

Tôt ce matin, vous prenez la route sur une longue piste latérite qui traverse la savane et les baobabs . Après plusieurs heures, la route atteint la rive du fleuve de la Mangoky. Vous le traversez en bac avant de continuer sur une ancienne route vers Morombe. Moins d’une heure plus tard, vous atteignez enfin Andavadaoka , un autre petit village de pêcheur plein de charme.

Trajet : 207 km de piste – 7h de route Dîner et nuit à l’hôtel

Andavadoaka – Salary – Ankasy

Ce matin, prenez le temps de profiter de la plage et du lagon. Entre sable blanc et eaux turquoises , vous êtes dans un petit paradis ! Le déjeuner est libre avant de reprendre la route pour Ankasy . Le parcours traverse des dunes, des villages de pêcheurs typiques, des forêts xérophytes et l’horizon bleu de la mer n’est jamais très loin. Peu importe l’heure de votre arrivée à Ankasy, le spectacle est toujours impressionnant ! Ses plages de sable blanc et son lagon turquoise donnent envie de s’y installer pour toujours.

Trajet : 95 km de piste – 3h30 de route Dîner et nuit à l’Ankasy Lodge

Une journée de rêve et de détente vous attend dans le cadre exceptionnel de l’ une des plus belles plages de Madagascar . Baignez vous dans le lagon émeraude et turquoise et prélassez-vous sur le sable blanc et fin. Le temps semble s’être arrêté pour vous laisser apprécier ce petit paradis ! Seule la brise et les marées rythment les journées. Prenez le temps de visiter le charmant petit village et d’aller à la rencontre de la population locale. Dans ce village, la pêche est la principale activité économique.

Dîner et nuit à l’Ankasy Lodge

Ankasy – Ifaty – Ranohira

Votre prochaine étape est Tuléar , ou Toliara, comme l’appellent les malgaches. Vous partez après le petit déjeuner en direction de cette station balnéaire célèbre pour sa proximité avec le Grand Récif, l’une des plus importantes barrière de corail au monde. Située au nord du tropique du Capricorne, il vous faut traverser de grandes étendues herbeuses avant de l’atteindre. En compagnie d’imposants troupeaux de zébus, vous croisez des aloès, des euphorbes et encore des baobabs. Les nombreuses villes et villages qui paraissent perdus au détour de cette route ont été fondés par les chercheurs de saphir, une pierre précieuse que l’on trouve fréquemment enfouie sous ce sol rouge à perte de vue. Dans l’après-midi, vous arrivez à Ranohira . Cette commune rurale est située dans le massif de l’Isalo, surnommé le Colorado malgache.

Trajet : 396 km – environ 8h de route Déjeuner et dîner libres à votre charge Nuit à l’hôtel

Aujourd’hui commence votre exploration du Parc National de l’Isalo , un massif étonnant, datant du jurassique et aux reliefs creusés par l’érosion et aux couleurs atypiques. Vous y êtes transférés en véhicule en début de journée, avant de commencer l’exploration à pied, accessible à tous. Dans ce paysage à couper le souffle, vous découvrez une faune et une flore endémique de Madagascar. Le premier point d’intérêt du jour est une piscine naturelle magnifique , une véritable oasis au milieu de ce paysage aride, alimentée par une cascade d’eau tiède. Pendant la balade, vous croiserez des sépultures des peuples Bara et Sakalava, rendant votre périple à la fois riche culturellement et un peu étrange. Pour atteindre la forêt de Namaza , vous pouvez soit marcher, soit reprendre le véhicule. Vous traversez une splendide vallée et une ligne de crête offrant une vue à couper le souffle sur le canyon. Dans la forêt, ouvrez l’œil pour apercevoir les lémuriens ! Le célèbre lémurien Sifaka peut être observé. Le clou du spectacle est la cascade des nymphes ! Prévoyez un déjeuner sous forme de pique-nique avant de reprendre le chemin de votre hôtel en fin d’après-midi.

Ranohira – Ambalavao

Les deux prochaines journées de route vous conduiront à Ranomafana , à travers le plateau aride de l’Horombe. En traversant la mythique « Porte du Sud » vous entrez dans la grande région du sud de Madagascar. Le paysage change totalement ! Les vignes et les rizières des hautes terres remplacent la savane. Vous marquez une halte à la réserve communautaire d’Anja pour y observer des lémuriens à queue annelée et des makis plutôt amicaux. Cette réserve a été créée afin d’accueillir les voyageurs tout en préservant la faune locale et en contribuant aux revenus des habitants. Vous reprenez ensuite votre route et vous arrêtez à Ambalavao. La fin de journée est libre et de nombreuses activités sont proposées par votre hôtel.

Ambalavao - Ranomafana

Après le petit déjeuner, vous visitez la ville d’ Ambalavao . Les mercredis et jeudis, un des plus grands marchés à bestiaux du sud du pays y est organisé. La ville est également connue pour ses vignes et sa production de vin, considéré comme l’un des meilleurs vins malgaches. Autre point d’intérêt, vous visitez une célèbre fabrique de papier. Le papier Antaimoro est fabriqué depuis l’époque des premiers émigrés musulmans sur l’île, très résistant, il est composé de fibres végétales. Vous reprenez la route vers Ranomafana en faisant un arrêt à Fianarantsoa . La ville haute et son charmant quartier historique valent le détour. Bien que très anciens, ils sont parfaitement conservés. Ses ruelles en escaliers offrent un panorama imprenable sur les rizières alentour et lui donnent un aspect unique. À votre arrivée à Ranomafana dans l’après-midi, un guide vous fait découvrir le village et sa célèbre source thermale.

Ranomafana – Ambositra

La forêt dense humide de basse et moyenne altitude du Parc National de Ranomafana est classée Site Patrimoine Mondial et abrite de nombreuses variétés d’arbres précieux tels que les fougères et les orchidées, ainsi que des lémuriens, des batraciens et des reptiles endémiques. Vous profitez de la matinée pour le visiter. Ensuite, vous retournez en ville pour profiter de cet endroit connu depuis trois décennies pour ses sources thermales . Pendant longtemps, de nombreux voyageurs venaient de pays parfois lointains, Océan Indien, Afrique australe ou Europe de l’Ouest, pour profiter de ses sources d’eaux chaudes connues pour soigner les rhumatismes. Dans l’après-midi, vous partez en direction d’Ambositra pour y passer la nuit.

Ambositra – Antananarivo

Après votre petit-déjeuner, vous visitez la ville d’ Ambositra . Elle est connue pour ses ateliers et boutiques de sculptures sur bois de la tribu Zafimaniry. Vous découvrez cet art classé au patrimoine mondial immatériel de l’UNESCO en visitant un atelier et en rencontrant des artisans. Après cette riche découverte, il est temps de retourner à Antananarivo . La fin du voyage approche, mais vous admirez encore comme au premier jour les paysages qui défilent sous vos yeux. En traversant la chaîne de montagnes de l’Ankaratraa, vous croisez des paysages verdoyants et vallonnés. Les maisons rustiques en terre rouge et toits de chaume alternent avec les rizières en terrasse. Ce décor des hauts plateaux vous accompagne jusqu’en fin de journée. Vous vous installez à l’hôtel à Antananarivo.

Best time to visit.

With such a unique ecosystem and environment, going on holiday to Madagascar at different times of the year offers a variety of challenges and benefits. September to November is considered one of the best times to visit, as these months sit right in between the cool, dry winter and the hot, rainy season. This time is also considered the best time to view birdlife.

July to August offers cooler temperatures and the best chances for whale watching on the coast.

January to March is cyclone season, but this is also the best time to see flowering orchids.

Culture and customs

Madagascar is a relatively young nation with inhabitants only traced back 1,300 years. Throughout its history, multiple nations and peoples have influenced the culture and customs of modern-day Madagascar. While some of this history can only be speculated, it's known that much of it has come from Indonesian origins, alongside neighboring African and Arab cultures.

The official languages of Madagascar are Malagasy and French. French is still widely spoken across the country due to the nation being a former French colony.

Today, about 90% of the population identifies as Malagasy, further split into 20 ethnic groups. The largest of these groups is known as the Merina, who lived on the plateau. The country's religious practices are split between Christian and the traditional beliefs of the Malagasy people.

Geography and environment

This iconic island nation sitting off the coast of East Africa in the Indian Ocean, is home to one of the most precious and unique natural environments in the world. Its isolated location means that a distinct variety of animal and plant species have been able to thrive without outside genetic influences.

Possessing extinct volcanoes, hidden waterfalls, cool highlands, grassy plains, pristine beaches, and islands, Madagascar was once completely covered in forest - but due to high levels of deforestation, most forest cover has been lost. Some tracts of rainforest do endure today, but it's estimated that the current level of forest cover is only 1-2 percent of what it once was. Despite this loss, hundreds of species of plants and trees thrive all over the island, from huge, ancient baobab trees to thorny cacti and resplendent ferns.

Eating and drinking

Malagasy cuisine is highlighted by its fresh and tasty homegrown exotic produce alongside its unique local livestock, such as the zebu (a species of cow), and a variety of seafood. Many cultures across the world have contributed to the Malagasy cuisine of today including French, Indonesian, Indian, and nearby African nations.

Food to try in Madagascar

This national dish is made of cubed zebu meat (a local type of cow) and served with a light broth, tomato sauce, and rice. With all the bright colors, it resembles the Malagasy flag.

2. Henakisoa sy Ravitoto

This dish is made up of braised pork and pounded cassava leaves with an assortment of spices.

3. Malagasy chocolate

Because of the unique environment it's created in, Madagascan chocolate has a unique fruity, citrusy, and even forest flavor profile.

4.Henakisoa sy Amalona

One of the seven royal dishes, this traditional meal is made of pork and eel. While an unusual duo to most, this dish is a delicacy in Madagascar.

5.Tsaramaso Malagasy

A slow-cooked white bean and tomato dish cooked with zebu or pork as a stew.

It's also a good idea to check with your local customs officials to ensure that you are able to bring certain items back into your home country. Australia and New Zealand generally have strict quarantine laws.

Do i need a covid-19 vaccine to join an intrepid trip.

Trips from 1 January 2023 onwards

From 1 January 2023, Intrepid will no longer require travelers to provide proof of vaccination against COVID-19 (excluding all Polar trips and select adventure cruises).

However, we continue to strongly recommend that all Intrepid travelers and leaders get vaccinated to protect themselves and others.

Specific proof of testing or vaccination may still be required by your destination or airline. Please ensure you check travel and entry requirements carefully.

Do I need a visa to travel to Madagascar?

If you are visiting Madagascar as a tourist for over 15 days, you will need to purchase a visa. A 30 or 60 day tourist visa can be purchased at the Antananarivo airport on arrival. You may also be able to apply in advance at your nearest Madagascan Embassy.

You may be asked to provide evidence of onward travel or a return ticket.

If you are visiting Madagascar for less than 15 days, you may not need to purchase a visa, however, you will still need to pay a border control administration fee. If you wish to extend your tourist visa, you can apply to the immigration service to extend it for up to 90 days.

Is tipping customary in Madagascar?

Tipping isn’t mandatory, but a little generosity will be received positively especially when considering the low wages that most service workers are typically paid. Setting aside a small amount for porters, guides and drivers is wise, as is leaving spare change or rounding up the bill at restaurants.

What is the internet access like in Madagascar?

Cyber cafes are found in some of the larger cities like Antsirabe, Fianarantsoa and Antananarivo. Smaller towns and remote areas will have far less access, so prepare to disconnect when traveling out of urban centers.

Can I use my cell phone while in Madagascar?

Cell phone coverage is generally good in Madagascar's large cities and towns, but less so in rural areas and on remote islands. Ensure you have global roaming activated before leaving home if you wish to use your phone.

What are the toilets like in Madagascar?

Squat/pit toilets are the standard in Madagascar except for western-style flushable toilets that are sometimes available in large hotels and other modern buildings. Carry your own supply of soap and toilet paper, as this is rarely provided.

Can I drink the water in Madagascar?

Drinking tap water isn't recommended in Madagascar. For environmental reasons, try to avoid buying bottled water. Fill a reusable water bottle or canteen with filtered water. Ask your leader where filtered water can be found, some hotels we stay in may have drinking water available. It's also advisable to avoid ice in drinks and peel fruit and vegetables before eating.

Are credit cards accepted widely in Madagascar?

Major credit cards like Visa are usually accepted by large hotels and western-style restaurants in the capital but not by smaller vendors. Ensure you have adequate cash to cover purchases not able to be made on credit.

What is ATM access like in Madagascar?

ATMs that accept foreign cards can be found in large cities and the airport, although they're often unreliable or out of service. Be sure to carry a back-up method of payment in case ATM access becomes difficult.

Madagascar safe destination for LGBTQIA+ travellers?

Discretion is advised for LGBTQIA+ travellers in Madagascar. While same-sex relationships are legal, public attitudes in Madagascar are not widely accepting of LGBTQIA+ people. The age of consent for same-sex relations is 21. Same-sex marriage is not recognised. It is advised to be discreet and avoid public displays of affection.

If you are travelling solo on an Intrepid group tour, you will share accommodation with a passenger of the same gender as per your passport information. Do I need to purchase travel insurance before traveling?

Absolutely. All passengers traveling with Intrepid are required to purchase travel insurance before the start of their trip. Day-to-day itinerary | The Grand Circuit

Day 1 of 23

Start: Ivato Destination: Antsirabe Drive:  190 km | 5 hours

Your start on the famed RN7! Expect asphalt, windy roads passing rice paddies and small highland villages. You can have a good lunch stop at Coin de Foie Gras in Behenjy, or try a real authentic paella (we're not kidding), at El Torro in Ambatolampy.

Some restaurants we can recommend: Chez Jenny (pizza), Trianon ,  Vatolahy (French) and Conterno (pastries and baguettes). 

Day 2 of 23

Enjoy: Antsirabe

Explore Antsirabe town and surroundings. Take a pousse pousse (the Malagasy version of the Asian rickshaw) tour to the craft workshops which are otherwise hard to find on your own. Hike or mountain bike around Lake Tritriva, an emerald-green crater lake.

Day 3 of 23

Start: Antsirabe Destination:  Ranomafana National Park Drive:  227 km | 5 hours

It's another lovely, windy road, passing through highland villages, rice paddies and rainforest-covered hills. Stop in Ambositra for a coffee break. For those interested in community tourism and highland culture, this is an interesting region to linger around for longer. 

The best way to Ranomafana is via the RN7 and branch off at Alakamisy onto the RN45. Restaurant tip: Manja

Day 4 of 23

Enjoy:  Ranomafana 

Ranomafana is a small and lively tropical town with a stunning riverside setting surrounded by rainforest-covered hills and the lovely scent of flowers in the air. It's the place to search for the golden bamboo lemur, only discovered in 1986. Day 5 of 23

Start: Ranomafana National Park Destination:  Andringitra National Park Drive:  130 km | 4 hours 

Drive to Andringitra National Park, perhaps the most scenic drive in Madagascar thus far. Especially beyond Ambalavao, when the highland plateau gives way to deserted grassland with big sandstone massifs and distant horizons. You could have a coffee break at Ambalavao, or use it as a base from which to explore community tourism initiatives. 

Day 6 of 23

Enjoy:  Andringitra

If you like hiking, this is a breath taking area. Several hikes can be organised from the camps in this area, ranging from a few hours to multiple days. We did the real Andringitra, a tough full day walk up to the peak. Bring plenty of water, sunscreen and a hat, as the sun is remorseless. Consider factoring extra days to complete the Imarivolanitra trekking (2-3 days). Day 7 of 23

Start:  Andringitra National Park Destination: Isalo Drive:  255 km| 5 hours 

Once you leave Andringitra National Park, the windy roads give way to smooth roads with far horizons and deserted grasslands with some rocky peaks. Bring a packed lunch as there are no places to buy or eat something en route!

Enjoy: Isalo National Park

Isalo National Park is a popular destination, featuring sandstone cliffs, deep canyons, waterfalls, natural pools, and a variety of native flora. Day 9 of 23

Start: Isalo National Park Destination: Tulear Drive:  237 km | 4 hours 

It's an easy 4-hour drive to Tulear. On your way, you will pass through towns that experienced a sapphire rush. We found the experience to be impressive and thought-provoking.

The beaches at Ifaty/Mangily, 24 km north of Tulear, are nicer, but we prefer the vibe at St Augustine's Bay, south of Tulear. Below is Bakuba Hotel at Tulear, among the best boutique hotels of Madagascar. 

Day 10 of 23

Start: Tulear Destination: Salary Bay Drive:  108 km | 6 hours 

For some of you, it's time to meet your ''pisteur'' - the navigator who will join you for the next few days. After Ifaty we say goodbye to the asphalt. Switch on those hub locks and start your 4x4 Madagascar adventure! 

From Tulear to Morombe is a beautiful road, bordered by the Mozambican channel to the west and the Mikea Forest to the east. While the road does have some sandy stretches, there is no need to use sand plates or deflate your tyres. 

Day 11 of 23

Start: Salary Bay Destination: Andavadoaka Drive:  60 km | 2 hours 

Drive to Andavadoaka, a remote little Vezo fishing village. It's pretty intense driving through no man's land. No more villages, cattle and people, but deep sandy tracks and endless bushes with mostly no telephone signal. What an experience. 

Day 12 of 23

Start:  Andavadoaka Destination: Manja Drive:  208 km | 5 hours

Pack your car with enough water and food for lunch, as you will not pass any restaurant or roadside stall for the next two days. It's an intense but fun driving day, covering many different terrains and passing through very remote areas. The first 2 hours are on a reasonably good 4x4 track to the small village of Morombe. The RN9 'road' between Morombe and Bevoay is in a poor state: potholes, bush, mud, shallow creeks and rocks. You must cross quicksand(!) to catch a local ''ferry'' to cross the Mangoky river - what an experience! As they're constructing a bridge, there is also a dam you can use to cross the river if the water level isn't too high. After the river crossing, the road is in good condition up to Manja town.

Day 13 of 23

Start: Manja Destination: Belo sur Mer Drive:  109 km | 4 hours

Visiting Belo sur Mer is only allowed when travelling with our driver-guide or pisteur. You have to cross a salt plain. The surface is dried out, but beneath, it's like quicksand, so you quickly get stuck if you don't know which track to follow. When you are travelling the West Coast without a pisteur, you'll have to skip Belo sur Mer. 

Tip: You can also visit Belo sure Mer by boat from Morondava. It’s a short boat ride, which can be arranged from the hotel you are staying at in Morondava.

Day 14 of 23

Enjoy: Belo sur Mer

We recommend enjoying a rest day (or two) in Belo sur Mer. You will have been on the road for quite a few days now, and it is a holiday after all. Entremer is our favourite accommodation. The owner, a friendly French lady, passionately runs the eco-lodge. The home-cooked food is simply delicious and not the standard fare. Make sure you try her Coco Rum punch as well...

Have a local lunch in the village at Chez Amis, where crab is often the only thing on the menu ;)  Or take a trip on a sailing boat, visit Kirindy Mitea National Park (mangroves, dunes, lakes and beaches) or just read a book and sip cocktails in your hammock...

Day 16 of 23

Start: Belo sur Mer Destination: Morondava Drive:  4 hours

Drive to Morondava. You'll mostly cover sandy tracks with a few bushes and some rivers where your  pisteur really comes in handy. And then…there is asphalt again. Explore Morondava town in the afternoon; a lively seaside resort with plenty of small restaurants and bars. Our favourite restaurant: La Capannina and Baobab . 

Day 17 of 23

Start: Morondava Destination: Tsingy de Bemaraha National Park Drive:  187 km | 8-10 hours

Driving on a 4x4 dirt track to Bekopaka, your gateway to the Tsingy de Bemaraha takes a full day. Make sure to have lunch in Belo-sur-Tsiribihina at Mad Zebu . The Malagasy chef used to work at a 3-star Michelin restaurant in France and now runs a restaurant in the middle of nowhere - pretty surreal!

Day 18 of 23

Enjoy: Tsingy de Bemaraha National Park

There is nothing else on earth like the limestone pinnacles of Tsingy de Bemaraha, a UNESCO World Heritage Site. We recommend spending at least two full days at the park so you can try out the great circuits that have been put in place, consisting of Via Ferrata (fixed cable routes), rope bridges and ladders. Combine it with a pirogue trip up the Manambolo River.

Start: Tsingy de Bemaraha Naitonal Park Destination: Morondava Drive:  187 km | 8-10 hours 

After visiting Tsingy de Bemaraha National Park, it will take a full day's drive to get back to Morondava.

Day 21 of 23

Start: Morondava Destination: Miandrivazo Drive:  268 km | 4 hours

Today you cover the RN35 and the RN24, an asphalt road but pretty putholed. You'll probably have the road to yourself. It roughly a 4 hour drive to Miandrivazo. A pirogue trip up the Tsiribihina river makes a nice excursion, or relax at the pool of Princess Tsiribihina , the only mid-range place to stay in Miandrivazo. 

Day 22 of 23

Start:  Miandrivazo Destination: Antsirabe Drive:  220 km | 4 hours

Take note that the only way to get from Morondava to Tana is via Miandrivazo and Antsirabe. The RN35 takes much longer, and the bridge on the RN35 is broken so the road is inaccessible. Do not follow Google Maps, as it will lead you the wrong way. Simply follow the RN34. 

Day 23 of 23

Start: Antsirabe Destination: Ivato Drive:  190 km | 5 hours 

Back on the good old RN7. You can return your rental car to the team of Roadtrip Madagascar at the airport or the lodge you are staying at in Ivato.

The best of madagascar in 3 weeks | this is what you need to know, travel time and road conditions.

We recommend 23 car rental days for this Madagascar itinerary. Is time not on your side? You can shorten this Madagascar itinerary by:

• Covering the West Coast in 4 days (saving you 3 days)
• Skipping the Tsingy de Bemaraha  (saving 4 days)
• Ending your roadtrip at Morondava and flying back to Antananarivo (saving 2 days)

The RN7 from Tana to Tulear is a tarmac road, while the west coast from Tulear up to the Tsingy de Bemaraha is off-road driving. Therefore, renting the Nissan Navara is required. Check our Driving in Madagascar blog for more tips and advice. 

Note that if you want to visit Belo sur Mer by car, it is required to travel with a pisteur (or driver-guide) from Roadtrip Africa.

Hire a 'pisteur' (navigator) for the West Coast

We allow roadtrippers to self-drive the West Coast, but you'll need to have experience driving a 4x4. Are you a less experienced or confident 4x4 driver? Or do you want to visit Belo sur Mer? Then we can hook you up with a so called 'pisteur'. This local navigator knows the region by heart and can advise which track to follow, where to cross a river, etc. 

A pisteur for the West Coast route costs €25/day and this is an all-inclusive rate (he arranges his own accommodation, food & drinks). He helps you to navigate, particularly where you need to cross the rivers when the river tide is high. You still drive yourself, he only gives instructions. These are local guys, who hardly speak English, but know the region by heart.

As there are no public transport options along the West Coast, note that he can only step in from Tulear to Morondava or vice versa.

Grand Circuit - When is the best time to visit the best of Madagascar

The West Coast of Madagascar and the Tsingy de Bemaraha are usually accessible from May up to mid-November, depending on the start/end of the rainy season. When visiting Madagascar in May or November, there is no guarantee that the area is accessible. When collecting your car, we therefore advise you to ask our team at Road Trip Madagascar about the road conditions and accessibility.

Overall was a good tour ! Just read well ! You will not see the baobab avenue! There only 3 meals inc'ude in all the tour so its add on the budget !!! The restaureant we went were kind of expansive ! ( still ok for sure but if you were tight on a budget it male a big difference) Otherwise i really enjoy my tour and the time spend in the home stay this is the real higtlight of the tour for me ! The ceo was nice and the driver amazingly good we all feel really safe ! Most of the activity are walking tour ! So if you dont like to walk this is not for you ! But you will see a lot of lemurs! most hotels only have one power outlet so provide a double usb port. I loved my tour and can recommand it for sure !

The tour guide Patrick was outstanding. He went above and beyond his job. Always extremely helpful. He was not afraid to get his hands dirty when I needed him.. He took good care of his group and had a friendly and helpful attitude.

Il est certes impossible de visiter tout le pays en 22 jours mais, pour les voyageurs “omnivores” (et pour ceux qui en ont les moyens..), nous proposons ce circuit, partagé entre avions et 4×4, entre baobabs majestueux et mer d’émeraude , entre rizières et lémuriens, entre différentes ethnies et des paysages à couper le souffle, entre le ciel des Tropiques et l’argile rouge de Madagascar….

Programme du voyage

Jour 1 : vol international - antananarivo.

Le vol se fait le soir en général (avec Air France), accueil à l'aéroport, transfert vers le centre-ville et hébergement à l'hôtel Le Bois Vert .

Jour 2 : Antananarivo - Morondava

Tôt le matin, transfert à l'aéroport pour embarquer sur le vol vers Morondava. Accueil à l'arrivée et transfert à l'hôtel Chez Maggie, hôtel Trecicogne, hôtel Laguna Beach ou similaire . L'après-midi visite de la célèbre Allée des Baobabs à 16 km de la ville. Dîner et nuit.

Jour 3 : Morondava - Antsirabe (530km / 9h)

Départ tôt le matin en 4×4 à travers les hauts plateaux de l'ouest. Arrêtez-vous pour déjeuner à Miandrivazo, sur la rivière Tsiribihina. Arrivée à Antsirabe en fin d'après-midi. Dîner et nuit à Couleur Café hôtel ou Résidence Camélia ou similaire.

Jour 4 : Antsirabe - Ranomafana (240km - 7h)

Départ d'Antsirabe le matin sur la Route nationale 7 à travers rizières et villages typiques. Arrêtez-vous pour déjeuner à Ambositra et visitez des ateliers de menuiserie. Arrivée à Ranomafana dans l'après-midi et installation à l'hôtel. Dîner et nuit à Setam Lodge ou hôtel Le Grenat .

Jour 5 : Ranomafana - Fianarantsoa (55km - 1,5h)

Journée consacrée à la visite du parc de Ranomafana et du village (thermes, arboretum). Déjeuner. Dans l'après-midi transfert à Fianarantsoa. Dîner et nuit à l'hôtel Zomatel ou Plaza

Jour 6 : Fianarantsoa - Anja - Ranohira (295km – 9h)

Départ le matin et arrêt à Ambalavao pour visiter l'atelier de production de papier Antaimoro et les produits en soie. Continuation ensuite vers la réserve d'Anja. Déjeuner et petite visite du parc (lemur catta). Dans l'après-midi, transfert à Ranohira (Parc de l'Isalo). Hébergement en hôtel, dîner et nuit en hôtel H1 ou similaire

Jour 7 : Ranohira - Tuléar (250km - 3h)

Matinée consacrée à la visite du parc de l'Isalo. Déjeuner à l'intérieur du parc. Dans l'après-midi transfert à Tuléar. Dîner et nuit à l'hôtel Palétuviers ou similaire

Jour 8 : Tuléar - Antananarivo

Dans la journée, transfert à l'aéroport pour embarquer sur le vol vers Antananarivo. Accueil dans la capitale et transfert à l'hôtel près de l'aéroport. Dîner et nuit à l'hôtel Bois Vert

Jour 9 : Antananarivo - Andasibe (130km - 3/4h)

Départ le matin vers les hauts plateaux de l'est. Petite visite de la réserve de Pereyra (caméléons, reptiles...). Arrêtez-vous pour déjeuner à Moramanga. Arrivée à Andasibe dans l'après-midi et visite de la réserve de Vakona. Dîner et nuit au Lemur's Lodge ou similaire

Jour 10 : Andasibe - Tamatave (260km - 4h)

Matinée consacrée à la visite du parc Analamazoatra. Déjeuner et transfert à Tamatave, principal port du pays surplombant l'océan Indien. Hébergement à l'hôtel, dîner et nuit à l'hôtel Anjara

Jour 11 : Tamatave - Sainte Marie

Tôt le matin transfert à l'aéroport pour envol vers Ste Marie. A l'arrivée sur l'île, accueil et transfert à l'hôtel. Hébergement en hôtel ou bungalow bord de mer en demi-pension Ravoraha Lodge ou similaire .

Jour 12 : Sainte-Marie

Journée consacrée à la détente sur la plage ou une éventuelle excursion en mer pour l'observation des baleines, Ravoraha Lodge ou similaire

Jour 13 : Sainte Marie - Antananarivo

Dans l'après-midi vol pour Antananarivo. A l'arrivée, accueil et transfert à l'hôtel proche de l'aéroport. Dîner et nuit à l'hôtel Le Bois Vert

Jour 14 : Antananarivo - Diego Suarez

Le matin transfert à l'aéroport pour embarquer sur le vol vers Diego Suarez (entre 07h20 et 09h30). A l'arrivée, transfert à Joffre-Ville (25 km) et visite du Parc National de la Montagne d'Ambre. Déjeuner et retour à Diego Suarez dans l'après-midi. Dîner et nuit à l'hôtel Allamanda .

Jour 15 : Diego Suarez - 3 Baies - Diego Suarez

Journée consacrée à la visite (en 4×4 et à pied) de la péninsule d'Orangea, ses célèbres 3 Baies et Ramena. Retour en ville dans l'après-midi. Dîner et nuit à l'hôtel Allamanda .

Jour 16 : Diego Suarez - Mahamasina (110km - 3h)

Le matin départ en voiture vers le sud. Détour sur une piste en terre rouge (17km) pour visiter les extraordinaires Tsingy Rouges. Elle se poursuit par une visite du Lac Sacré puis un déjeuner. Arrivée à Mahamasina (Ankarana Park) dans l'après-midi. Hébergement en bungalow, dîner et nuit au Soa Lodge .

Jour 17 : Mahamasina - Ankify - Nosy-Be (120 Km - 3h)

Le matin visite du parc des Tsingy d'Ankarana. Transfert en bateau à moteur jusqu'au port de Hellville (Nosy Be) puis en autocar jusqu'à l' hôtel Mahita Tsara, Arc en Ciel, Hibiscus Auberge ou hôtel Belvédère. Hébergement en chambre sur la mer en demi-pension.

Jour 18 à 20 : Nosy-Be

Séjour balnéaire en demi-pension à l' hôtel Mahita Tsara, Arc en Ciel, Hibiscus Auberge ou hôtel Belvédère.

Jour 21 : Nosy-Be - Antananarivo

Vous venez de publier le deuxième tome du livre qui raconte votre tour de Madagascar. Quel était le but de cette expédition ?

Sonia: Vivre une aventure en famille, ouvrir nos enfants aux beautés du monde mais aussi à ses fragilités. Nous sommes partis avec une charrette tirée par des zébus pour aller à la découverte de ce pays fascinant, fort de dix-huit ethnies et riche en biodiversité.

Alexandre: Ce voyage revêtait aussi une dimension humanitaire. Nous voulions ajouter du sens à nos tours de roues! En quatre ans, nous avons levé plus de 330 000 euros pour aider 33 projets. Les plus importants concernaient la fourniture d'un générateur de rayons X pour la léproserie des Filles de la Charité à Farafangana, et la construction d'une clinique à Vohémar. Cette phrase de l'Évangile me touche particulièrement: "Ce que tu as fait au plus petit de mes frères, c'est à moi que tu l'as fait." La chance que nous avons eue de grandir dans l'amour et la prospérité nous oblige.

Quelles rencontres vous ont le plus marqués ?

Alexandre: Celle avec le père Émeric Amyot d'Inville, qui a fondé un foyer pour personnes handicapées à Tanjomoha.

Sonia: Il y a aussi eu la rencontre avec l'immense père Pedro qui, à Tananarive, œuvre au cœur d'une communauté de 30 000 personnes: Akamasoa, une sorte de "Cité de la joie" d'aujourd'hui. Après ces rencontres, on revient "guéri", comme la femme qui toucha dans la foule la tunique de Jésus. Re-énergisé! Je suggérerais à ceux qui veulent se rendre à Madagascar de commencer par la messe du père Pedro, au milieu de 10 000 jeunes en liesse.

Lors d'Africa Trek, Sonia et Alexandre font l'ascension du Kilimandjaro par la voie du glacier de la Flèche. Celle de Cupidon? Ce grand voyage de noces n'a fait que renforcer leur amour.

Ce voyage fut-il une bonne école de vie pour vos deux enfants ?

Sonia: Oui, même si, parfois, nous avions le sentiment de "mettre la charrette avant les zébus"! Ulysse et Philaé, âgés de 7 et 10 ans au début de notre périple, ont été témoins de choses qui n'étaient "pas de leur âge", comme on dit chez nous. Lors de deux missions médicales dans la brousse, ils ont vu des nourrissons mourir de malnutrition... Mais aussi des professionnels de santé français passer leurs vacances à les soigner.

Alexandre: Ils ont acquis le sens de la débrouille. Ce fut aussi une grande école buissonnière pleine d'enseignements. À travers notre vie quotidienne au contact des habitants de la brousse, courageux malgré d'insondables détresses, ils ont appris d'autres façons de concevoir la vie, mais aussi la gestion des ressources, la protection de la biodiversité...

Sonia: À la place des jeux vidéo et des réseaux sociaux, ils récitaient des règles de grammaire en marchant, prenaient des leçons de choses sur le terrain et faisaient une dictée tous les soirs sous la tente!

Alexandre: Nous avons vécu à quatre dans cette tente de 4 mètres carrés pendant quatre ans! Peu de vêtements, peu de confort, peu d'intimité. C'était la sobriété... mais heureuse.

Et vous, que vous ont apporté ce voyage et les précédents ?

Alexandre: Ces voyages au long cours m'ont apporté l'apaisement, la sérénité et une joie durable. Car je sais désormais que le ciel est toujours bleu au-dessus des nuages.

Sonia: Pour ma part, un épisode vécu lors d'Africa Trek a bouleversé mon existence. En Tanzanie, après avoir failli mourir d'une crise de paludisme, j'étais arrivée épuisée dans la mission des chanoines de Saint-Augustin de Basotu. Le père abbé n'étant pas là, j'ai eu le privilège de m'installer dans sa case. Y dénichant un livre d'entretiens avec Mère Teresa, je l'ai dévoré, puis j'ai glissé au bas de mon lit en pleurant, touchée par la grâce! J'ai alors eu l'intime conviction que dorénavant, je ne serai plus jamais seule. "Il" était entré dans ma vie par la petite porte de cette paillote de brousse.

Dans le grand sud sauvage de Madagascar, les population locales réservent à la famille Poussin un accueil chaleureux.

Vingt ans après, cette lumière de la foi brille-t-elle toujours ?

Sonia: Je veille à l'entretenir, ce qui n'a rien de facile dans cette vie où l'on court sans cesse. Alors, j'essaie de ralentir. Pour moi, le vrai pèlerinage se vit parfois immobile ou dans la répétition des petites tâches, comme le disait sainte Thérèse de l'Enfant-Jésus. Je suis devenue une adepte du chapelet. En le récitant, je mêle mon énergie positive à celle du monde entier.

Alexandre: J'en ai aussi découvert les vertus en traversant l'Himalaya en compagnie de Sylvain Tesson. Je les appelais mes "remonte-pentes": j'en commençais un en bas d'une montagne et il m'aidait à arriver au col. Le chapelet existe dans le bouddhisme et dans l'islam. Pourquoi donc ne pas revivifier cette pratique chez nous? Maintenant, je commence un chapelet dès que j'enfourche ma moto!

Vous accompagnez aussi des pèlerins sur les chemins de Saint-Jacques. Comment répondez-vous à leurs attentes ?

Alexandre: La plupart viennent pour prendre une respiration dans leur vie trépidante ou rebondir après une épreuve. L'écoute est donc fondamentale, et la marche s'y prête bien. Pour moi, ces voyages sont particulièrement émouvants car j'y songe à mon père: il aurait voulu faire ce chemin mais la maladie de Charcot l'a emporté. Je marche avec son âme vers Compostelle, comme je le lui ai promis.

Sonia: Il y a parmi ces pèlerins des gens de toutes conditions et je trouve merveilleux, sur le Camino, notre égalité dans la pauvreté et la simplicité. On se révèle, jour après jour, avec pudeur... J'ai une semaine pour aider, accompagner, aimer, consoler. Mais en fait, le chemin fait l'essentiel!

Quelles sont pour vous les principales vertus de la marche ?

Alexandre: Elle dégage une force fabuleusement créatrice, tout l'inverse du miroir narcissique des écrans. Marcher permet de changer son point de vue, laisser derrière soi les tracas du quotidien. Et se rendre disponible au travail de Dieu dans nos vies par des signes, des rencontres miraculeuses qui nous transforment. C'est une expérience que personne ne peut faire à votre place. Je marche donc je suis!

Sonia: La marche constitue aussi le plus court chemin vers l'autre. S'il ne s'agit que d'une sorte de yoga mobile pour se sentir mieux avec soi-même et le cosmos, c'est déjà pas mal, mais un peu court. Marcher, c'est créer du lien, sortir de chez soi, exister!

Dans Marche avant, Alexandre, vous écrivez : « Impossible d’être un marcheur et de ne pas devenir un protecteur de la Terre. » Comment protégez-vous la planète ?

Alexandre: Nous n'avons jamais été de gros consommateurs et n'achetons rien à crédit. Nous vivons dans de l'ancien: il y a peu d'objets du XX e siècle dans notre maison. Nous suivons la règle des trois "R": réduire, réutiliser, recycler. Nous ne jetons rien et réparons tout. Cela fait trois fois que je change des pièces sur notre vieille machine à laver la vaisselle!

Sonia: Mes trois essentiels sont mes poules, mon potager et mon feu quotidien. Alors que notre choix de vivre à la campagne aux portes de Paris me paraissait suicidaire, il a été salvateur.

" Ils [Philaé et Ulysse Poussin] ont acquis le sens de la débrouille. Ce fut aussi une grande école buissonnière pleine d'enseignements", raconte Alexandre Poussin.

Avez-vous un projet de voyage

Alexandre: Pas pour l'instant. En bons marcheurs, nous sommes à ce que nous faisons. Un pas devant l'autre, avec application pour ne pas tomber. Nous nous consacrons aux conférences pour soutenir les missions catholiques de Madagascar, et à l'écriture du troisième tome de Madatrek, prévu pour le printemps 2024. Encore un an de travail avant de penser à un autre univers à découvrir, en tournant la page malgache de notre vie... si nous la tournons un jour! La marche apporte cela aussi: l'amour de la profondeur. C'est un puissant antidote au stress et à la pression. Lenteur, profondeur, bonheur!

En coulisses

Alexandre Poussin? Un vrai tsunami! Il y a trente ans, je l'ai vu débouler dans mon bureau de la Guilde du raid, à Paris, avec son ami Sylvain Tesson. Tous deux postulaient à une bourse de l'aventure pour leur tour du monde à vélo. Sonia a intégré un peu plus tard notre bande de voyageurs au long cours. Depuis, nous nous retrouvons régulièrement, comme pour cette table ronde coorganisée par Le Pèlerin le 20 janvier dernier, au Forum104 à Paris. Son thème? "La marche, le chemin le plus court vers l'autre."

Les projets miniers à Madagascar

Selon La Banque Africaine de développement, les exploitations d’ilménite, de nickel et de cobalt représente 1.5% du PIB de Madagascar.

Parmi les principaux acteurs miniers, on retrouve :

• Ambatovy - Mine de nickel et de cobalt située sur la côte est de Madagascar. La mine est exploitée par une coentreprise entre Sumitomo Corporation , Sherritt International et Korea Resources Corporation. Ambatovy contribue à hauteur de 30% aux recettes d’exportation de Madagascar. 
• QMM - Mine de sables minéralisés d'ilménite, de zircon et de rutile, située dans le sud de Madagascar. Elle est exploitée par Rio Tinto , une entreprise minière multinationale.
• Ambodilafa - Il s'agit d'un projet de vanadium et de titane situé dans le sud-ouest de Madagascar. Le projet est exploité par la société australienne Neometals .

Focus sur le nickel

Le secteur minier, notamment le nickel, occupe une place importante dans l'économie malgache. Actuellement, la production de nickel est affectée par la fluctuation des prix sur le marché mondial, en raison notamment de l'inondation du marché par la production chinoise et indonésienne. Cela a conduit à une restructuration des coûts et des effectifs dans les entreprises minières opérant à Madagascar.

Malgré ces défis, le nickel malgache reste compétitif en termes de qualité et de coût de production. Madagascar est même classé comme le 8e exportateur mondial de nickel raffiné. Cependant, des efforts sont nécessaires pour optimiser la production et le raffinage du nickel afin de maintenir sa compétitivité sur le marché mondial.

Diversification des projets miniers

En février 2024, le gouvernement malgache a annoncé une nouvelle impulsion pour l'industrie minière, avec la relance des projets en suspens et un engagement à résoudre les problèmes rencontrés.

Outre le nickel, d'autres projets miniers se dessinent à l'horizon, notamment :

• L'extension de la mine de Molo , axée sur l'extraction de graphite par la société Next Source Materials Inc . Cette extension devrait porter la capacité de production à 17 000 tonnes par an d’ici juin 2024. Le graphite est principalement utilisé dans l'industrie mécanique, électrique et sidérurgique.
• L’exploitation des gisements de sable . La société australienne Base a récemment obtenu l'autorisation d'exploiter des gisements de sable à Toliara . Les opérations minières devraient débuter en septembre 2024. Le projet de sables minéraux de Toliara est considéré comme l'un des meilleurs projets de développement de sables minéraux au monde, avec une durée de vie de la mine de 38 ans. Ce projet vise à produire 904 millions de tonnes d’ilménite, de zircon et de rutile, utilisées dans la production de pigments blancs pour la peinture, les plastiques, le papier, ainsi que dans la céramique et la métallurgie.

Les ambitions de Madagascar sont grandes. L’État prévoit également l'ouverture d'une vingtaine de projets miniers au cours des cinq prochaines années.

Dans le secteur de l'énergie, Madagascar s'oriente de plus en plus vers les énergies renouvelables pour répondre à sa demande croissante en électricité. Des projets hydroélectriques et photovoltaïques sont en cours de développement pour augmenter la capacité de production d'électricité sur l'île. Par exemple :

• La mise en place de 78 centrales solaires , marquant ainsi un virage vers une énergie plus propre et respectueuse de l'environnement. Ces centrales solaires ajouteront 77 mégawatts (MW) à la production électrique du pays, réduisant ainsi sa dépendance aux énergies fossiles.

Ces projets offrent des opportunités non seulement pour répondre à la demande locale en énergie, mais aussi pour stimuler le développement économique à travers la disponibilité d'une énergie abordable et propre. De plus, ces projets contribueront à réduire la dépendance de Madagascar aux combustibles fossiles et à promouvoir la durabilité environnementale.

Défis et opportunités dans le secteur minier et de l'énergie

Malgré les progrès réalisés dans les secteurs minier et énergétique, des défis persistent. La mise en œuvre efficace des projets nécessite une gestion rigoureuse des ressources, des investissements stratégiques et une coopération entre les acteurs locaux et internationaux.

La politique de contenu local, visant à favoriser l'emploi et le développement des compétences locales, est un aspect crucial à prendre en compte dans la mise en œuvre de ces projets. Cependant, des efforts supplémentaires sont nécessaires pour garantir son application effective et équitable.

Madagascar se trouve à un tournant crucial dans son développement économique, avec des opportunités importantes dans les secteurs minier et énergétique. En tirant parti de ses ressources naturelles et en investissant dans les énergies renouvelables, Madagascar peut non seulement répondre à sa demande croissante en énergie, mais aussi promouvoir un développement durable et inclusif à long terme.
