Kiss Wrap Up 50-Year Live Career With Explosive New York City Tour Finale

By Andy Greene

Andy Greene

In a perfect world, Kiss would have wrapped up the final show of their End of the World tour by inviting former members Ace Frehley and Peter Criss onto the stage for tearful hugs, an end to the bitterness that has consumed the group for decades, and one last rendition of “Rock and Roll All Nite,” giving the inevitable biopic a perfect last scene.

In the world we actually live on, Criss and Frehley were nowhere in sight when Kiss played their (supposed) final show at Madison Square Garden on Saturday evening. They weren’t acknowledged in any way throughout the night, which ended with a surprise announcement that Kiss will live on as digital avatars with help from Industrial Light & Magic.

“The end of the road is the beginning of another road,” Paul Stanley told the crowd before the last bows. “We’re not going anywhere. You’ll see us in all different things all the time. We’ll see you in your dreams.”

There was pyro hot enough to feel on your skin from 50 yards away, explosions loud enough to hurt your head even with earplugs in, and the ritualistic moments where Gene Simmons breathes fire and Paul Stanley zip-lines across the floor of the arena. And it all felt extra special since Madison Square Garden is just a few blocks from the rehearsal hall where the band was born back in the early Seventies.

Editor’s picks

Every awful thing trump has promised to do in a second term, the 250 greatest guitarists of all time, the 500 greatest albums of all time, the 50 worst decisions in movie history.

The show kicked off with an explosive “Detroit Rock City” and stuck largely to tunes from the band’s original makeup days like “Shout It Out Load,” “Deuce,” and “Cold Gin.” They did dip their toes into the post-makeup era with 1983’s “Lick It Up,” 1984’s “Heaven’s on Fire,” 1998’s “Psycho Circus,” and 2009’s “Say Yeah.” As always, Stanley did all the talking in his cornball preacher persona (“We better call the doctor! I’m not talking about just any doctor! I’m talking about our favorite doctor, Doctor Love!”), while Simmons remained silent, opening his mouth only to sing or spit fake blood.

They closed out the show with “Do You Love Me,” an extended series of bows, a balloon drop, and “Rock and Roll All Nite.” Anyone expecting Gene Simmons to break from his Demon character and express emotion during this solemn moment was disappointed. The lights simply dimmed at the end of the song to reveal the new Kiss digital avatars performing “God Gave Rock and Roll to You II.” A New Era Begins” appeared on the screen along with a QR code that sent you to the Kiss website, and the announcement about the avatars.

Kiss performs its final concert. But has the band truly reached the 'End of the Road'?

Kiss band members, from left, Tommy Thayer, Gene Simmons, Eric Singer and Paul Stanley participate in the ceremonial lighting of the Empire State Building on Thursday in New York.

In the 50 years since Kiss first kicked and thrashed its way onto the New York rock scene, the band has given the world sing-and-shout-along hits like "Detroit Rock City," "Crazy Crazy Nights" and "Beth," and live performances replete with blood-spattering, fire-breathing, pyrotechnics and gobs of cartoonish stage makeup.

"Their schtick lifted them up to the absolute top," music writer Joel Selvin , the author of numerous books about rock musicians including Linda Ronstadt, the Grateful Dead and Sly and the Family Stone, told NPR.

On Saturday, the memorable stagecraft that made Kiss one of the biggest selling hard rock bands in the world will come to an end, as its members perform what they are touting as their final show of their aptly titled, four-year-long "End of the Road World Tour" — at Madison Square Garden in New York. The concert will be available to watch live on Pay-Per-View .

"It has nothing to do with personalities in the band or tensions or a difference of opinion or musicality. It's purely practical," said Kiss co-founder, rhythm guitarist and vocalist Paul Stanley in an interview with the music publication Ultimate Classic Rock of the band's reasons for bringing five decades of Kiss to an end. "You can play beat the clock, but ultimately the clock wins."

The city has apparently gone Kiss-crazy in the days leading up to the occasion, with the appearance of Kiss-themed taxis, Metro cards and pizza boxes. On Wednesday, the New York Rangers hosted KISS Game Night , featuring Kiss-related activities and "limited-edition KISS x Rangers merchandise." Band members also made an appearance at an Empire State Building lighting ceremony on Thursday. Staged in honor of Kiss' swan song, Empire State emitted the colored lights associated with the band — silver, red, purple, green and blue.

'We Wanted To Be Larger Than Life': Paul Stanley Of KISS On Almost 50 Years Of Rock

Music Interviews

'we wanted to be larger than life': paul stanley of kiss on almost 50 years of rock.

Despite all the hooplah, this may not in fact be Kiss' goodbye kiss. The band undertook a previous "farewell tour" more than 20 years ago. After a brief hiatus, it started touring again on and off in 2003. Live shows and album releases flowed on from there.

In interviews, band members have spoken about continuing on after Saturday's Madison Square Garden performance in one way or another. Both Stanley and co-frontman Gene Simmons have their own bands and say they aim at the very least to continue making appearances in those formats.

"Nobody ever really says goodbye," said rock critic Selvin, citing comebacks over the years by the likes of Cher, Steve Miller and the Grateful Dead. "It's a show business strategy. You take a bow. But there's always an encore."

Selvin said artists often reappear after retiring because they can make a lot of money owing to fans' pent-up demand. For example, the pop-punk band Blink-182 is earning four times as much on its current reunion tour than it did when it last re-united in 2009, according to Far Out magazine. (The band issued a statement in 2005 saying it was going on "indefinite hiatus," only to reunite four years later.)

"Personal life interferes, you want to disappear into the woodwork for a while and then demand builds and you go back to it," Selvin said. "Steve Miller took his band apart in '99. He was just tired. And he was out for six years. And then in 2005, he put his band back together and suddenly his price was up, and there was more interest in seeing him."

Meanwhile, some musical acts simply never retire. The Rolling Stones, for instance, are embarking on yet another North America tour in 2024. The band just announced additional dates .

Selvin doesn't think we've heard the last of Kiss.

"The rule of the farewell tour is that you have to say goodbye to every hall, and sometimes you have to say goodbye twice," Selvin said. "I do not expect this to be the last time that Kiss performs, any more than 'Fare Thee Well' was the last time The Grateful Dead performed."

KISS Museum Opens In Las Vegas: Video Walkthrough Tour

A video walkthrough tour of the newly opened Kiss World museum in Las Vegas can be seen below.

The 2,000-square-foot expansion of the glow-in-the dark attraction Kiss By Monster Mini Golf at the Rio Hotel & Casino is attached to what is a 15,000-square-foot KISS -themed space in Masquerade Village.

"My personal collection is gonna be at the Rio hotel, and it's gonna be a chance for all the fans to go up there and see close to ten thousand items — lyrics and things and guitars," KISS bassist/vocalist Gene Simmons said last December. "No band has got this. We are the juggernaut of them all in licensing and merchandising. But instead of being in one of my big houses, the fans will be able to go there, see, look, touch, take photos. And there will be video screens in the back so you'll be able to be up on stage with KISS , if you can imagine. And by the way, it's also in the inside of the Kiss Mini Golf where you can play golf. And you can get married at the Kiss Chapel. We have a little person wearing my makeup and it looks like this: 'Repeat after me: I was made for loving you.' 'I was made for loving you.' 'And then you were made for loving me.' And they get married."

KISS continues to be among the most merchandised bands in history and a pioneering force in the music merchandise and licensing industry, with KISS -branded merchandise available in major retailers around the globe, including Nordstrom , Macy's , Urban Outfitters , Hot Topic , Torrid , Tilly's , Pacsun , Cotton On , Revolve , Nasty Gal , Princess Polly , Target , Walmart and Kohl's , among many more.

Recent KISS deals in North America include Dead Sled Coffee , for pre-packaged coffee in the U.S.; a fashion and accessories collaboration with Robert Graham in the U.S.; high-end apparel with Lauren Moshi in the U.S.; a line of seasonal apparel with Ugly Christmas Sweater for holiday 2021 in the U.S.; and more.

In the international marketplace, recent strategic partnerships include Brands For Fans for gin and dark rum in Europe, Japan, and Australia; Metal Departments for real money gambling worldwide; Fexpro for apparel and accessories in Mexico, Central America, and South America; Konnekt for apparel & accessories in Japan; and EastPak for bags, backpacks and accessories in U.S. Europe, Middle East, Asia and Canada; among many others.

Back in 2017, Billboard reported that KISS had hit the 125 global licensing deal benchmark with longtime merch partner Epic Rights . By that time, the band had already sold some half a billion dollars retail value at stores and concerts. In 2015, KISS made the Top 150 Licensors List published in License Global .

KISS frontman Paul Stanley told Billboard that the band's merchandising began "organically. We came at a time when fan clubs were frowned upon," he explained. "Fan clubs harkened back to an age of Fabian and Frankie Avalon and seen as a ploy by management and record companies to sell the flavor of the week. But when we came into being, people wanted to align themselves with us. They were the ones who said, 'We want a t-shirt, a belt buckle.' It's very easy to tag us as marketing geniuses, but I would rather say we have very acute hearing."

Asked if KISS ever got criticized for the merchandising, Stanley said: "We were snickered at by other bands until they saw the checks we were getting and all of a sudden they joined the parade. I tend to think we live by a law of commonality. In other words, no one is that different from anyone else and when i can provide something that I want and satisfy a need in myself I satisfy a need in someone else."

Paul also confirmed that KISS does, from time to time, turn down merchandising deals. "There is nothing that's worth doing that is immoral or unethical — I think if you stick with that, you're in good shape," he said. "There were times we were offered significant amounts of money for either playing some place we thought was not holding up their end in terms of social, political or humanitarian activity and we also said no to tobacco companies. Over the years, and more so now than ever, I realize I have to answer to my children. They can't see their father as a fraud."

Yes, KISS really is coming to Crandon International Raceway, as ticket on-sale dates, more details are announced

kiss world tour 2015

CRANDON – We finally have some details on the KISS concert happening in, of all places, the northwoods of Wisconsin this summer.

The legendary rockers announced June 1 they would be bringing the pyro and platform boots to Crandon International Raceway at 8:30 p.m. Sept. 1 as one of three newly added stops on their End of the Road Tour. Since Crandon isn’t exactly on the way from Norway or Australia — the band's closest stops on either side of the Crandon date — the announcement had a lot of fans doing a double take.

What brings the band playing the Hollywood Bowl in Los Angeles and Bridgestone Arena in Nashville to Crandon, about 110 miles northwest of Green Bay? The efforts of the Forest County Potawatomi Tribe and its casinos.

“The Tribe helped secure the concert to welcome KISS to Wisconsin and to celebrate the upcoming opening of Gene Simmons and Paul Stanley’s Rock & Brews restaurant inside of Potawatomi Casino Hotel in Milwaukee,” according to a release posted Sunday on the KISS website.

“The Forest County Potawatomi Tribe is honored to play a role in bringing KISS to Crandon, Rock & Brews to Milwaukee, and people together to enjoy this next era of entertainment in Wisconsin,” Forest County Potawatomi Community Tribal Chairman James Crawford said in a statement. “We cannot wait to welcome these two icons to the perfect backdrop of our northwoods, where we’ll show how Wisconsin truly loves to rock.”

The concert falls during the 54th Polaris Crandon World Championships and 8th Red Bull Crandon World Cup Aug. 31 through Sept. 3 at the raceway, an event that was expected to draw as many as 65,000 people in 2022.

Tickets go on sale to the public June 19, earlier for the KISS Army

Tickets will go on sale to the public at 10 a.m. June 19 at paysbig.com/events . Prices start at $75 for general admission standing. Seated sections are $200 and $225. Pit standing is $275.

KISS Army fan club members will have access beginning at 10 a.m. Saturday. A local market/racer sale will begin Sunday.

If the End of the Road Tour is indeed the band’s last as it has been billed, the Crandon concert would be KISS’ final visit to Wisconsin. Paul Stanley, Gene Simmons, Tommy Thayer and Eric Singer last played the state in May 2022 for a show at the American Family Insurance Amphitheater in Milwaukee.

New Rock & Brews restaurant will open at Potawatomi Hotel & Casino

While in Milwaukee, Simmons and Stanley also stopped by Potawatomi Hotel & Casino for the groundbreaking of its new Rock & Brews restaurant, a chain co-founded by the two men. The restaurant is part of a $100 million renovation to Potawatomi’s third floor and is tentatively scheduled to open in August.

Northern Lights Casino, the 600-seat theater inside Potawatomi that hosted national touring acts, closed in January after 22 years.

According to the release from KISS, the Crandon concert is part of “a summer concert series that will usher exciting entertainment into Wisconsin and into Potawatomi Casinos and Hotels.”
