American Cruise Lines operates small ships accommodating between 90 and 180 passengers that are built, flagged and crewed in the U.S. – and it's the only company in the world operating a 100% U.S.-flagged fleet of riverboats and cruise ships. ACL's itineraries traverse waterways across 35 states, with 11 itineraries dedicated to the Mississippi River. Cruisers can choose to sail on modern riverboats with a sleek interior design or while away their time aboard classic paddle-wheelers reminiscent of days gone by.

ACL offers variety as well as versatility: This line boasts both the longest and shortest sailings on this list with cruises ranging from eight to 60 days in length, including The Great United States. This inaugural 60-day voyage spans four major rivers and 20 states, making it the longest U.S. river cruise in history.

Complimentary hotel and transportation packages are available from every departure city before your cruise. You can book certain premium packages for added perks, such as two nights spent next door to Graceland in Memphis – with VIP tickets and a city tour included in the price.

Music Cities Cruise

Spend a week getting lost in the sounds of the Memphis blues, rock 'n' roll and country music legends on the seven-night Music Cities Cruise. A hotel stay the night before your sailing is included, but embarking in Memphis means you also have the chance to splurge on a two-night pre-cruise package near Elvis' former home Graceland .

Ports of call include Paducah, Kentucky; Dover, Tennessee; and Clarksville, Tennessee, with an overnight in Nashville and an included excursion to a show at the Grand Ole Opry. Two scenic sailing days feature picturesque views of America's Heartland along the Mississippi, Ohio and Cumberland rivers as well as Lake Barkley.

2024 dates: In 2024, there are two available itineraries in September and November.

Grand Heartland Cruise: St. Paul to New Orleans

Length: 15 days Price: Starts at $9,455 per person

This 15-day voyage allows you to explore America's rich history in towns along the Upper and Lower Mississippi River. The immersive voyage covers six states and 12 cities including St. Paul, Minnesota ; Dubuque, Iowa; St. Louis, Missouri ; Memphis, Tennessee; Natchez, Mississippi; Baton Rouge, Louisiana ; and more.

Take a step back in time while visiting Mark Twain's boyhood home in Hannibal, exploring stately historic estates in Natchez and Civil War sites in Vicksburg. At the end of a busy day ashore, you'll have plenty to chat about with fellow passengers during the evening cocktail hour.

2024 dates: American Heritage – ACL's traditional paddle-wheeler – and three modern riverboats set off on this journey from August to October in 2024.

Complete Mississippi River Cruise: New Orleans to St. Paul

Along the way, you'll sail 1,393 miles, visit 10 states and experience a staggering 20 ports of call as you tour Louisiana and then head northbound to Minnesota.

In the South, walk the battlefields of the Civil War and sample delicious Southern barbecue before listening to the rhythms of jazz, the blues and rock 'n' roll. Then, explore the small and larger cities along the upper parts of the river. Remember to take time to gaze out at the picturesque scenery and the rolling farmlands of America's Midwest before disembarking in St. Paul.

2024 dates: Three of ACL's modern riverboats sail this itinerary in May, June and August in 2024.

The Great United States

Length: 60 days Price: Starts at $51,000

This epic journey showcases the natural beauty and living history of the U.S. from sea to shining sea. The sailing embarks in Portland, Oregon , on the Pacific Coast before traveling east to the Atlantic shore along four major rivers that highlight some of the country's most stunning coastlines. Upon arrival in New York Harbor, guests will have an unforgettable view of one of the most iconic landmarks in the U.S.: the Statue of Liberty .

Passengers can follow in the footsteps of Lewis and Clark along the Snake and Columbia rivers; cruise along Ol' Man River in search of Mark Twain and Elvis; see the vibrant colors of fall during peak season on the Hudson River; and take in the coastal breezes (and fresh seafood) along New England's rocky coastline.

All-inclusive pricing covers the pre-cruise hotel stay, all flights and hotels between cruise segments, an ACL jacket and gear pack, daily excursions, all meals and beverages, gratuities and port charges, entertainment, and Wi-Fi.

Viking River Cruises

Viking cruise ship under a bridge on the Mississippi River.

Viking is no stranger to sailing Europe's rivers; the brand is synonymous with river cruising worldwide aboard its dozens of ships. However, Viking River Cruises is a newcomer to U.S. rivers, with its purpose-built ship: the 386-passenger Viking Mississippi. Looking to carve out its own niche in the American river cruising category, Viking claims it has the region's "first truly modern cruise ship" with its distinct Scandinavian design and expansive top sun deck with an infinity plunge pool.

Viking's mostly all-inclusive fares include a complimentary excursion in each port, destination lectures and performances, beer and wine at meals, free Wi-Fi, specialty coffees and teas, and more. The line offers five itineraries ranging in length from eight to 22 days along the Mighty Mississippi. Pre- and post-cruise extensions can be added to all voyages for an additional expense.

New Orleans & Southern Charms: Round-trip from New Orleans

Length: Eight days Price: Starts at $3,999 per person

If you don't know which Viking Mississippi itinerary to choose, start here. A round-trip voyage from New Orleans is convenient for booking flights and offers an excellent opportunity to extend your stay in NOLA. Six guided tours are included across eight days, from the historic estates of Natchez to Vicksburg National Military Park. A stop in St. Francisville gives you the chance to marvel at some of the 140-plus buildings it has on the National Register of Historic Places.

If you extend your stay in New Orleans, plan to sample the local Creole cuisine and take in some of the city's nightly jazz entertainment. In the morning, grab a beignet and a steaming cup of chicory coffee au lait at the original Café du Monde in the French Market.

2024 dates: This itinerary is available on select dates in February, November and December.

Heart of the Delta: New Orleans to Memphis

Length: Nine days Price: Starts at $4,299 per person

Similar to its round-trip New Orleans Southern Charms itinerary, the Heart of the Delta cruise begins in New Orleans and calls on the same five ports, before sailing through the Lower Mississippi and disembarking in Memphis. Enjoy scenic views of the serpentine river route – perhaps with expert commentary or a local cooking demonstration – and then take time to explore the birthplace of the Memphis blues, which is also a center of civil rights history.

2024 dates: In 2024, this cruise is available in February, March, April, May, June and November.

America's Great River: St. Paul to New Orleans

Length: 15 days Price: Starts at $12,999 per person

This Viking voyage sails from St. Paul to New Orleans on a two-week trip that calls on 13 ports with one day of scenic sailing. This itinerary combines the best of Viking's other Mississippi sailings for an all-encompassing Midwestern and Southern experience with 12 guided tours.

Included in the fare is a tour of Graceland; a stroll through small-town Burlington, Iowa, to see Snake Alley, deemed the most crooked street in the world; and a visit to the National Eagle Center of Red Wing, among others. For an additional fee, hop on an airboat ride through the Atchafalaya Swamp in Baton Rouge or tour the Anheuser-Busch Brewery of St. Louis.

2024 dates: Viking has availability for this itinerary in July, September and October.

You may have seen riverboat gambling ships or are at least familiar with riverboat gambling along U.S. waterways. However, while high rolling on the river sounds like an exciting way to spend a night (or two, or more) while on your riverboat cruise, you'll have to jump ship to play the slots, roll the dice, spin the wheel or play a hand of Texas Hold 'em. Gambling on cruise ships sailing on internal waters is prohibited by U.S. law.

Gambling on boats in the U.S. is a complicated matter. While you will find some ships sailing along American waterways that are only set up for gambling, they are not carrying passengers from port to port. Most vessels that feature riverboat gambling are now moored, offering sports betting, table games, entertainment, live music and dancing while tethered to shore.

Mississippi River

Explore America's true historic treasures on a cruise of the Mississippi River and its tributaries. This 2,320-mile waterway flows through 10 states, from northern Minnesota to the Gulf of Mexico. Its name comes from the Ojibwe word Misi-ziibi, meaning "Great River."

The Mississippi led explorers to new lands, and it served as an important lifeline for the transport of people and goods to the towns that rapidly grew along its banks. Centers of commerce and culture flourished along its main route and tributaries. Cities like St. Louis, Memphis, Vicksburg and New Orleans owe their existence to the Mississippi.

Step back to a time when life moved a little slower and riverboats slowly churned the waters. See Civil War battlefields, restored plantations, rolling farmland and picturesque riverfront towns filled with Victorian-era architecture. The region has a rich musical legacy as the birthplace of the blues, jazz and country music. It's been celebrated in literature, too, most notably by Mark Twain, who grew up in the port town of Hannibal, MO.

Sailings might spend time on the mighty Mississippi in addition to other waterways, like the Tennessee, Ohio, Illinois and Cumberland Rivers. Cruises are particularly good values, because your stateroom and onboard meals are included in a single rate that you pay upfront.

My Friend and I went on the Riverboat Twilight and it was the most perfect/awesome adventure! From reserving our trip to our final walk to our car after the two day cruise, all was perfect! Staff are amazing, from the Captain to the servers, to the musical entertainers. The food is suburb and generous! Everything is very well organized, from our luggage/hotel in Dubuque/seating for meals, free shuttles in Dubuque, etc! The scenery and info along the way from the captain was wonderful! This was an absolutely perfect two day cruise, and we are going again in Mid October as we loved it so much!!.

The service by all involved was first class all the way!

We were very impressed by the personal service we received by the staff and everyone involved. The trip was very nice from a sightseeing perspective, interesting from a historical perspective and very relaxing overall. Plus the food was plentiful and excellent. We highly recommend this cruise to everyone!

Wonderful relaxing two days....

Extremely enjoyable trip. The cruise itself was delightful as you slowly moved up and down the river enjoying the wildlife and listening to the Captain explain the view and history. Unless you are a very big eater you have to be selective as they feed you FIVE times a day. Not only is the food plentiful but it is also very good. The Grand Resort in Dubuque was a nice stay as we had a view of the river. There was adequate time to explore some of the sights In Dubuque. I think we will do this trip again in the future…….

3 F's; Food, Food, and Fun

Excellent team from the captain to the crew provide a relaxing time..The chefs do an excellent job and there is more great food than you can imagine. This is the most organized and professional staff that we have ever experienced. No detail is overlooked.

If you are not vaccinated, we strongly encourage you to do so, however, at this time the Riverboat Twilight does not ask for proof of vaccination. Mask wearing is the choice of the individual. The Twilight offers ample indoor and outdoor seating on all three decks and plenty of fresh air.

We will continue to maintain our increased sanitization efforts of the TWILIGHT and our boarding facilities, and we continue to provide hand sanitizer aboard the boat and employ a strong air purifier that uses UVC lighting that has been proven to destroy viruses and other bacteria.

For the safety of our passengers and crew and to maintain proper cleanliness, we have implemented the following guidelines for parents of children under the age of 14. While onboard the vessel and when making use of our food and beverages services, children must be accompanied by an adult at all times. With your cooperation and understanding, we will be able to continue to offer a safe and enjoyable experience for everyone.

As an owner, of the Holiday Inn Express & Suites Le Claire, IA and the President of Great Lakes Management Group which manages the hotel’s day to day operations, I wanted to say thank you. The business relationship with the Riverboat Twilight and her passengers is valued and much appreciated. We all know businesses from every industry has been operating in a different environment the last 8 weeks and will encounter new changes in the future.

We continue to monitor the franchise, local, state and federal safety guidelines to insure our guest and staff safety. For example, we anticipate a few changes in the near future which will include the following: a plastic shield / barrier at the front desk check,  revised breakfast offerings without a buffet setting, hand sanitizer located in the lobby and all floors at the elevator landings, continued use of hospital grade products to clean and sanitize the guest rooms, individual sanitizer wipes as an in-room amenity, removal of all products in the rooms that are reusable for example, pens, pads, laundry bags, and throw pillows, these items will be available upon request. We hope to see you soon. Stay safe and healthy!

We leave our dock at 9:30 am and return around 4:00 pm. Keep in mind that a boat cannot schedule a time to enter the lock, so our Captain uses his knowledge and experience to return at the right time, but circumstances could cause us to return to dock a little late.

Some Useful Information

Blocked streets can cause delays.

We appreciate railroads and the hard work of their crews, but travelers need to be aware of possible driving delays due to Dubuque streets being blocked by trains. If you are approaching our location by driving northbound on US Hwy 61/151, do not take the White Street or 9th Street Exits to get to us. Both of these exits cross railroad tracks, and trains can sometimes block street traffic as long as 30 minutes. That could cause you to miss your cruise!

Instead, continue north and take the Kerper Blvd Exit.  At the traffic light, turn right, then turn left onto 16th Street.  Be in the right lane, and turn right onto Admiral Sheehy Dr, and then take the next right turn to arrive in our parking lot.  On this route, the road takes you over the railroad tracks avoiding the possibility of being delayed by a train!

Please tell us that you are bringing the little ones.

Babies are people too.

We happily let children 3 years of age and younger take a ride free of charge, but they are counted as a passenger just like paying customers.  So, when you make reservations, please inform us if you have that little bundle of joy so we can add them to our passenger list!

Your Itinerary

1 Memphis, TN Embark your ship and settle into your stateroom. Situated on the Chickasaw bluffs overlooking the Mississippi River, Memphis is revered for its blues music and barbecue. Some of the most famed names in blues, including B.B. King, got their start in Memphis, and the city has a well-deserved reputation as the home of this classic American music genre. Memphis is also celebrated for its culinary heritage and is renowned for its traditional barbecue restaurants serving flavorful dry rub ribs. Rich in history and culture, Memphis’s many notable museums include the National Civil Rights Museum and Elvis Presley’s Graceland.

2 Scenic Sailing: Mississippi River The rich and varied landscape along the Mississippi River is characterized by wide floodplains, rocky outcroppings and sandy beaches nestled between fertile farmland and bustling bankside cities. Indigenous peoples used the river for thousands of years before Europeans began exploring the region during the 16th and 17th centuries. It became an important trade route during the 19th century, with the rise of steamboats and river commerce. Today, the river is an important ecological region, with diverse wildlife and habitats, including wetlands and forests.

3 Paducah, KY Located at the confluence of the Tennessee and Ohio rivers, Paducah is one of Kentucky’s hidden gems. A UNESCO Creative City, Paducah is famed for its preserved 19th-century architecture and historic buildings that line the main street. The city’s Downtown streets are a delight to explore on foot. The National Quilt Museum houses a superb collection of contemporary style quilts by artists from around the globe. Paducah is also famed for its “Wall to Wall” murals, colorful paintings by different artists that document the heritage and history of the city and the region.

4 Cape Girardeau, MO The largest city between St. Louis and Memphis, Cape Girardeau has a long and storied history. It was an important site during the Civil War and once housed a number of forts, including Fort D, which remains a well-preserved historic site to this day. Fondly referred to as “The Cape” by locals, this riverside destination is also popular with visitors who come to enjoy nature. The Cape Girardeau Conservation Nature Center is a stunning facility with verdant landscapes and picturesque trails to explore, as well as an abundance of flora and fauna.

5 St. Louis, MO During the 19th century, St. Louis was a gateway into the Louisiana Territory. In 1904, the city gained recognition as host of a world’s fair (officially called the Louisiana Purchase Exposition), whereby some accounts the ice-cream cone was introduced. Today, it is home to rich architectural treasures—among them, the Cathedral Basilica of St. Louis, with its 41-million-piece mosaic; the Renaissance Revival City Hall; the 19th-century Old Courthouse; and the Gateway Arch, standing along the Mississippi as a monument to westward expansion.

6 Alton, IL Alton lies along The Meeting of the Great Rivers Scenic Route, where the Mississippi and the Illinois Rivers converge. The road to this historic town is considered one of America’s most picturesque drives, with its limestone river bluffs, flowering trees and whistling birds. Along the bluffs is a mural of the Piasa Bird, a dragon-like creature of Native American mythology, with the horns of a deer and a face like a man. First discovered during the 17th century, it had worn away due to the elements. It has since been restored and is today a celebrated landmark.

7 Hannibal, MO Hannibal is the childhood home of Samuel Langhorne Clemens, or Mark Twain, and the inspiration for his beloved stories of Tom Sawyer and Huckleberry Finn. Prior to the 1803 Louisiana Purchase and arrival of European settlers, a variety of indigenous Native American tribes called the area home. Hannibal grew into the primary port for steamboats and flatboats traveling the Upper Mississippi. “The Unsinkable Molly Brown,” the early 20th-century socialite, philanthropist and survivor of the Titanic tragedy, was also born here.

8 Burlington, IA The US flag was first raised over Iowa in Burlington—in 1805—by Lieutenant Zebulon Pike during his Mississippi explorations. Later, it became an outpost for the American Fur Company, a trading enterprise founded by John Jacob Astor. In 1834, it took its present name after the Vermont birthplace of its first settler, John Gray. During the steamboat era, it was a major port along the river. Today, the city is home to many magnificent buildings on the National Register of Historic Places, including the art deco Capitol Theater and the Gothic Revival St. Paul’s Church.

9 Quad Cities, IA Straddling the confluence of the Mississippi and Rock Rivers, the Quad Cities area comprises Davenport and Bettendorf, Iowa, and Rock Island, Moline and East Moline, Illinois. As the only section of the Mississippi that flows from east to west, it is geographically unique. Its tightly knit riverside towns thrived due to thoughtful planning and effective leadership. Today, the Quad Cities rest amid the fertile farmland known as “America’s Breadbasket”—the nation’s most expansive and scenic agricultural region—and is home to agribusiness giants including John Deere.

10 Dubuque, IA One of Iowa’s few cities laid out among rolling bluffs, Dubuque is called the “Masterpiece on the Mississippi” for its 19th-century ingenuity and modern-day cultural evolution. Timber and boatbuilding were central to the city’s growth, with wood harvested in Minnesota and Wisconsin. The spirit of this river town lives on in the Cathedral Historic District, dotted with well-preserved buildings and authentic period lampposts. Today, the city is praised for its livability and for its riverside developments, including a museum and aquarium dedicated to the Mississippi River.

11 La Crosse, WI La Crosse has a deep connection to the towering bluffs and rolling farmland of the Norskedalen, or “Norwegian Valley.” Here, a Norwegian immigrant population has created a unique culture over generations. Historic immigrant villages dot the valley still, a collection of preserved homesteads reflecting a frontier way of life. Today, La Crosse boasts numerous sites on the National Register of Historic Places. Its important architectural landmarks, along with an array of engaging statues along the riverfront, make La Crosse feel like a vast open air museum.

12 La Crosse, WI Norwegian immigrants who settled in La Crosse during the late 19th and early 20th centuries have had a major influence on the city’s cuisine. Their traditional dishes, such as lefse, lutefisk and krumkake, are still enjoyed today, with many local restaurants offering Norwegian-inspired menu items. Norwegians also introduced dairy farming to the region, leading to the production of cheese, butter and other dairy products; Wisconsin is known for its cheese curds, bite-sized pieces of fresh cheddar that have a mild flavor and unique texture.

13 Red Wing, MN Red Wing is known for its Red Wing Shoes, which produced footwear for soldiers in both world wars. The city was named after a Sioux chief whose red-dyed swan wing indicated his rank. The first settlers—many from New England—arrived in the mid-1800s. German, Irish and Scandinavian immigrants followed, bringing skills in tanning, shoemaking, pottery and more. The city boasts a diversity of legacies including Red Wing Stoneware and Pottery, founded in 1877 as the nation’s first commercial potter. Today, Red Wing enjoys a place in the National Trust for Historic Preservation.

14 St. Paul, MN Located near the confluence of the Mississippi and Minnesota Rivers, St. Paul welcomed its first settler in 1838. And little more than a decade later, the thriving settlement was named the capital of the Minnesota Territory. By 1858, some 1,000 steamboats frequented this “Last City of the East” on the frontier. Today, St. Paul is a modern metropolis and the capital of Minnesota. The city’s historic residential districts invite long strolls, particularly around Irvine Park near the Mississippi, where late 19th- and early 20th-century mansions grace tree-lined streets.

15 St. Paul, MN St. Paul is the capital of Minnesota and one of the state’s oldest cities. Situated on a series of bluffs overlooking a deep S-shaped bend in the Mississippi River, it forms the “Twin Cities” with neighboring Minneapolis. The city has long been an important commercial center, first for furs during the early 19th century, then later for livestock and meatpacking after the development of the railroad. St. Paul boasts several historic neighborhoods and is home to Summit Avenue, the longest preserved street of Victorian-era buildings in the US. After breakfast, disembark your ship and journey home.

What to Know About Mississippi River Cruises — From the Cruise Lines to Top Itineraries

See small towns and bustling cities by boat on a Mississippi River cruise.

Elizabeth Rhodes is a special projects editor at Travel + Leisure , covering everything from luxury hotels to theme parks to must-pack travel products. Originally from South Carolina, Elizabeth moved to New York City from London, where she started her career as a travel blogger and writer.

mississippi river cruise fall

River cruises are a great way to see the world — you can visit several waterfront destinations and watch the scenery pass by from cozy accommodations and top-deck lounges on intimate luxury ships. And while rivers like the Danube and the Rhine are top choices for many travelers, you don't have to go abroad for a memorable river cruise. You can access some of the nation's iconic attractions and favorite cities right from the Mississippi River.

There are three main cruise lines traveling the Mississippi, with journeys ranging from less than a week to more than 20 days. Spring and fall are the best times of year to take a cruise along the river, as you'll avoid the summer heat and winter chill and enjoy more pleasant weather while you take in the surroundings.

Here's what you need to know about Mississippi River boat cruises, from choice itineraries to popular stops.

Mississippi River Cruise Lines

There are three main cruise lines that offer itineraries along the Mississippi River: Viking River Cruises , American Queen Voyages , and American Cruise Lines . Viking is known for its luxury river, ocean, and expedition cruises to incredible destinations around the world, and trips aboard its 193-stateroom Viking Mississippi adhere to the same standard of service.

American Queen Voyages offers several itineraries along the Mississippi — one along the Upper Mississippi, another on the Lower Mississippi, and one that also sails a portion of the Ohio River — on its signature paddle-wheel steamboats. The company's flagship, the American Queen, is said to be the world's biggest steamboat.

The itineraries on American Cruise Lines feature either modern riverboats or old-school paddle wheelers, so you can choose your ideal sailing experience.

All three cruise lines offer similar itineraries along the river, so we recommend looking into the ships, the amenities, and what's included in the rate (like pre-departure hotel stays and excursions) to help make your decision.

Popular Ports on the Mississippi

You can cruise all the way from New Orleans to Minneapolis, or you can sail shorter segments of the river. Typically, cruises along the Lower Mississippi sail between New Orleans and Memphis, while cruises on the Upper Mississippi sail between St. Louis and the Twin Cities.

Passengers on the Upper Mississippi may get the chance to hop off and explore Mark Twain's childhood home in Hannibal, Missouri, stroll the streets of Iowa's oldest city (Dubuque), or marvel at sacred bluffs in Red Wing, Minnesota. Along the Middle Mississippi, there's Paducah, Kentucky, a UNESCO-designated Creative City , and Chester, Illinois, the birthplace of Popeye the Sailor Man.

On the Lower Mississippi, you'll find Cajun culture in Baton Rouge, Louisiana, Civil War history in Vicksburg, Mississippi, and music and BBQ in Memphis .

Mississippi River Cruise Itineraries

There are many itineraries to choose from between the three major Mississippi River Cruise lines, but here are our top picks.

Viking River Cruises: America's Great River

Cruise from New Orleans all the way up to St. Paul on Viking's 15- or 17-day America's Great River itinerary aboard the 193-stateroom Viking Mississippi , a vessel designed just for this river. The journey starts in New Orleans and stops in Baton Rouge; Natchez and Vicksburg, Mississippi; Memphis; and St. Louis, where passengers can explore attractions like Gateway Arch National Park and the flagship Anheuser-Busch brewery. From there, it continues on to Hannibal, Missouri; Burlington, Davenport, and Dubuque, Iowa; La Crosse, Wisconsin; and Red Wing, Minnesota, where travelers can learn about America's most recognizable symbol at the National Eagle Center. In between action-packed stops, there's plenty of time to take in the scenery from your veranda or the boat's several public viewing areas.

American Queen Voyages: New Orleans to Memphis

Sail along the Lower Mississippi from New Orleans to Memphis on this nine-day cruise, which starts with a complimentary stay in New Orleans and a second day to enjoy the Big Easy. Then, it's on to Nottoway Resort and St. Francisville in Louisiana and Natchez, Vicksburg, and Greenville in Mississippi before a day of cruising through the Delta and disembarking in Memphis. There are a few different paddle-wheel riverboats that cruise this route for American Queen Voyages — find the specific ship for your journey when you select a date.

American Cruise Lines: Upper Mississippi River Cruise

This eight-day cruise starts in St. Louis and sails along the Upper Mississippi to St. Paul. Stops along the way include Hannibal, Missouri; Fort Madison, Davenport, and Dubuque, Iowa; and Winona and Red Wing, Minnesota. Several riverboats cruise this route, including American Melody and American Symphony , inaugurated in 2021 and 2022, respectively. These sister vessels offer large rooms and suites with contemporary furnishings and an upscale feel.

5 stunning fall foliage road trips in the Midwest

Red Barn And Forest In Autumn Colors, Minneapolis, Minnesota, United States

From fiery birch, elm and sugar maple in the Great Lakes to sunset-hued beech and oak in the southern Appalachians to glowing sumac and cottonwoods along the Mississippi, the forests of the Midwest flaunt some of the most vivid fall colors in the United States.

Here is a guide to five Midwest road trips to regions known for dramatic fall foliage displays and seasonal activities, like cider tasting and pumpkin picking.

The West Michigan shoreline

mississippi river cruise fall

The historic West Michigan Pike route, now 1-196 and U.S. 31, connects several beach towns from the southern state line to Mackinaw City near the Canadian border. Start your journey down south in St. Joseph/Benton Harbor, where vineyards terrace the hills in burgundy and Champagne gold, and beaches like Jean Klock Park and Silver Beach offer perfect spots to picnic. In South Haven, visit the Michigan Maritime Museum and soak up the waning rays of autumn at one of the town's 12 beaches.

With their turreted mansions, walkable downtowns and eclectic array of restaurants helmed by big-city-trained chefs, the twin towns of Saugatuck and Douglas make a well-provisioned home base to explore the region. Established as an art colony as early as the 1880s through the presence of the renowned Ox-Bow summer art school, Saugatuck-Douglas retains a flourishing art scene that has expanded to the surrounding area, now referred to as the Art Coast of Michigan. The legacy of this bohemian culture also made Saugatuck-Douglas a welcoming destination for LGBTQ+ travelers and residents , a tradition that was celebrated in the exhibit A Century of Progress at the Saugatuck-Douglas History Center , housed in a Civil War-era schoolhouse. While you're in town, order hot dogs and ice cream from the Douglas Root Beer Barrel , an oversized root beer barrel that's a vestige of 1950s roadside Americana.

View hills blanketed in red and gold from atop Mount Baldhead, reached via a climb featuring 320 stairs, then watch the sunset from Oval Beach or stroll through Saugatuck Dunes State Park . There is no better time than apple season to tour Virtue Cider Works, 15 minutes southeast of town, or take a guided tasting in the flower-filled garden. While Saugatuck is best known for its historic hotels, budget travelers will appreciate the availability of the Best Western Plaza Hotel Saugatuck (rates from $107, or 20,000 Best Western Rewards points per night).

After a stop in aptly named Holland to see its authentic Dutch windmill, head for Grand Haven, where the harbor's history dates back 300 years and a long waterfront promenade extends out to a highly photogenic lighthouse.

Minnesota's Mississippi headwaters

mississippi river cruise fall

You couldn't find a better way to kick off a road trip than to seek out the headwaters of the Mississippi, located in Itasca State Park . After rock-hopping across the river — which is surprisingly small at its start — climb the park's fire tower to gaze over the canopy of crimson, tangerine and ochre or view the multihued shoreline from a nature cruise on Lake Itasca. You will find equally show-stopping lakeside color in Lake Bemidji State Park , then head into the town of Lake Bemidji to pose for pictures under a towering Paul Bunyan and Babe the Blue Ox.

Experience more of the region's logging history in the Brainerd Lakes Area by biking or hiking the Paul Bunyan State Trail, a rails-to-trails project following the railroad route that once carried hewn logs to the region's many lumber mills.

Finish your trip in St. Cloud, where numerous former granite quarries — many now filled with water — have been transformed into lushly forested parks. In Quarry Park & Nature Preserve , trails loop among 20 ponds enclosed by huge blocks and boulders of the quarry's prized flecked granite. A floating boardwalk over wetlands and a dock extending into one pond provide picture-perfect spots to capture the fringe of russet and amber reflected in still water. If the weather turns warm, you may see thrill-seeking rock-jumpers enjoying the two swimming quarries. As you enter and exit, don't miss the polished rock column demonstrating the superb quality of the reddish granite that sets this stone-cutting town apart.

Apple season sees the area's numerous farms hosting visitors for harvest season fun. Hidden Cove Orchard, Collegeville Orchards and others offer more than a dozen varieties of apples and pears, pumpkins, gourds and other fall favorites.

Ohio's Hocking Hills

mississippi river cruise fall

Linking six different parks making up 2,356-acre Hocking Hills State Park , the Hocking Hills Scenic Byway ranks as one of the Midwest's most coveted fall color road trips. As you drive along State Route 374, you will find a host of eye-catching foliage backdrops, including waterfalls, caves and craggy bluffs.

From your start in Rockbridge, you will travel past the Cantwell Cliffs, Whispering Cave, Cedar Falls and Old Mans Cave, all as alluring as their names suggest. Must-sees include the massive Ash Cave, which features a waterfall in the center, and the Gorge Trail in Conkle's Hollow, which follows a series of plunging cascades. You can even sleep among the trees at Hocking Hills Treehouse Cabins, where six one-of-a-kind structures feature multiple decks and windows to take in the leafy beauty (rates from $450 night).

A free weekend shuttle accesses all of the park's highlights, allowing you to get out of your car and savor your surroundings. You can also soar over the canopy by zip line with Hocking Hills Canopy Tours and XTreme Canopy Tours. Finally, the Hocking Valley Scenic Railway offers a chance to relax and enjoy the scenery from a vintage train car, open or closed as weather permits.

Another reason you will want to spend the night in the immediate area: skies so dark they inspired the creation of the John Glenn Astronomy Park, where high-powered telescopes scan the heavens.

Iowa's Great River Road

mississippi river cruise fall

This trip starts 15 miles north of Iowa City in Lake Macbride State Park , where cinnamon, copper and gold swaths of black walnut and hickory trees reflect from the water's edge. From here, it's east along the historic Lincoln Highway Heritage Byway to catch the Great River Road as it traces the mighty Mississippi northwards. Stop in Clinton to learn about the importance of the river's locks and watch riverboats and barges navigate the rising and falling waters. Eagle Point Park is a spot for leaf-peepers, overlooking the river at its widest point, seen even better from the top of the stone lookout tower. Every fall color, from lemon to maroon, is illuminated against the limestone cliffs of Bellevue State Park.

Then it's on to Dubuque, where you can spot alligators and pythons and learn about the river's essential ecosystem at the National Mississippi River Museum and Aquarium , operated in partnership with the Smithsonian Museum.

More stunning color is displayed as you continue north in the vast Mines of Spain State Recreation Area and Pikes Peak State Park , where viewing decks extend from the clifftops to provide perfect views of glowing oaks.

Experience the Swiss-German hospitality that has earned this area the nickname Little Switzerland by visiting the towns of St. Donatus and Guttenberg, settled by immigrants in the 1700s. Try the roast pork Schweinbraten at Guttenberg's Picket Fence Cafe, then stop into the Rathskeller, a traditional bier hall, for a Pinkus, Ayinger or Weihenstephaner accompanied by live music.

Brown County, Indiana

mississippi river cruise fall

This road trip's highlight is Brown County State Park , with its scenic route through dense stands of multicolored sycamores, oaks and maples. Just over an hour south of Nashville, Indiana, and an hour and a half north of Louisville, Kentucky, Brown County can be explored as a day trip from either city, though the area is well worth a full weekend. You'll find two of the best bird's-eye vistas at Bean Blossom Overlook and Hesitation Point, also known as the park's top sunset spot for its west-facing aspect. Or climb up the West Lookout Tower and North Lookout Tower to scan the canopy. See the fall color doubled in the reflections along Ogle and Strahl lakes, both encircled by hiking trails.

Within this bucolic area of woods and farms you'll find that all roads lead to Nashville for food and boutique browsing. Like its namesake, this city is big on culture with a constant stream of shows, concerts and movies at the Brown County Music Center and the Brown County Playhouse and Performing Arts Center. Fall is the only time to sample the seasonal potato bacon soup at Hobnob Corner Restaurant, housed in the downtown's oldest building.

Equally picturesque, the town of Bean Blossom is a must-stop for its Brownes Bean Blossom Family Restaurant, located on a scenic vista point, and a much-photographed covered bridge dating from 1838. Or seek out straight-from-the-garden fare at the Farmhouse Cafe and Tea Room in a 19th-century farmhouse outside Bean Blossom.

Ten minutes outside Nashville, the smaller village of Belmont is home to the Goat Conspiracy, a farm and sanctuary for 150 goats available for petting and goat yoga. And you can enjoy the fruits of Brown County's rich harvest at Kelp's Greenhouse and Pumpkin Patch, with the usual flourish of fall-themed activities from hayrides to corn mazes.

Those lured by antiquing will appreciate the 7,000-square-foot Brown County Antique Mall, just east of the state park, while music lovers should stop at Mike's Music & Dance Barn when heading west to Bloomington. Speaking of Bloomington, loyalty program members may want to base their stay in this lively college town, which boasts a wide variety of loyalty program hotels including the Hilton Garden Inn Bloomington (rates from $93 or 28,000 Hilton Honors points per night) and the Hyatt Place Bloomington (rates from $117 or 12,000 World of Hyatt points per night).
