Immersive Lesotho Day Trip, exploring the “Kingdom in the Sky”

This tour will take you up Sani Pass and further on into a village in the Mountain Kingdom, called Mokhotlong, allowing you to explore more of Lesotho in just a day !

It’s the perfect mix of nature, culture and history – enjoy Lesotho’s natural flora and fauna, driving past the highest peak in Southern Africa ; dive into the culture of the Basotho people at a historical trading post and take a peek into history by getting to see the old buildings that pack lots of history into this small village.

Why go further into Lesotho?

Our top-ranked Sani Pass tour is very popular as it explores the Sani Pass summiting into the Mountain Kingdom of Lesotho! However, if you have more time, it’s really worth your while going on our full-day tour into Lesotho . With the extra time that we have, we get to travel beyond Sani Top and into the more populated areas of Mokhotlong. Experience real Basotho-life!

We summit some of the highest peaks south of Kilimanjaro ! Black Mountain pass is an incredible sight at 3240m ASL – it often sees snows in Winter and sometimes even in Summer. As you descend into the valleys below you start seeing the remote villages around Mokhotlong.

Great Value Immersive Experience into the heart of Remote Lesotho

We pack coffee/tea, snacks and a hearty lunch while overlooking Lesotho’s Mountain Vistas.

Included in the price is Basotho Pony-Trekking in the foothills near Mokhotlong with your guide – who lives in and loves this area and shares stories about rural life in the mountains OR an immersive cultural experience – a short hike brings you to the heart of a homestead where we learn so much from these friendly and warm people who have been living the same way for many years.

About Mokhotlong

This village in Lesotho is a picturesque hour and a half drive from the Sani Pass Border Post. Mokhotlong started as a small police outpost in 1905 and over the years it developed into a remote trading hub for the people of the Highlands region. Since Mokhotlong is so remote, it was preserved from the development that other cities in Lesotho underwent. Mokhotlong gives tourists the opportunity to experience a truly traditional village in the ‘Kingdom in the Sky’.

Lesotho is the only country in the world that is in its entirety above 1000m in elevation, making this an experience that you cannot enjoy anywhere else in the world! This tour ticks all these boxes – nature, culture and history – all in Lesotho, all in one day.

Best time to visit lesotho.

There’s no bad time to visit Lesotho. October to April tends to be wetter, while winter (May to September) can be cold, dropping below freezing at night. The climate is mostly temperate all year round.

Geography and environment

Lesotho is completely surrounded by  South Africa . Perched on the highest part of the Drakensburg escarpment, this mountainous kingdom is filled with valleys and peaks. The lowland areas, which still soar 1000m above sea level, are home to most of the population, while the highlands are a magnet for adventurers looking to hike or pony trek between villages.

3. Pony trekking

If you prefer four legs to two, then there’s nowhere better to get on a horse (or pony) and ride than Lesotho. Set out with a guide to explore the countryside on a short or overnight trek.

Hiking is the preferred term, in Canada and the United States, for a long, vigorous walk, usually on trails (footpaths), in the countryside, while the word walking is used for shorter, particularly urban walks. On the other hand, in the United Kingdom, and the Republic of Ireland, the word “walking” is acceptable to describe all forms of walking, whether it is a walk in the park or backpacking in the Alps.

The word hiking is also often used in the UK, along with rambling (a slightly old-fashioned term), hillwalking, and fell walking (a term mostly used for hillwalking in northern England). The term bushwalking is endemic to Australia, having been adopted by the Sydney Bush Walkers club in 1927. In New Zealand a long, vigorous walk or hike is called tramping. It is a popular activity with numerous hiking organizations worldwide, and studies suggest that all forms of walking have health benefits.

Peak Climbing

Mountaineering is the sport of mountain climbing. While some scholars identify mountaineering-related activities as climbing (rock and ice) and trekking up mountains, others are also adding backpacking, hiking, skiing, via ferrata and wilderness activities, and still others state that mountaineering activities also include indoor climbing, sport climbing and bouldering. However, to most of the scholars, the term mountaineering is understood as climbing (which now refers to adventure climbing or sports climbing) and trekking (hill walking in ‘exotic’ places).Hiking in the mountains can also be a simple form of mountaineering when it involves scrambling, or short stretches of the more basic grades of rock climbing, as well as crossing glaciers.

While mountaineering began as attempts to reach the highest point of unclimbed big mountains, the sport has branched into specializations that address different aspects of the mountain and consists of three areas: rock-craft, snow-craft, and skiing, depending on whether the route chosen is over rock, snow or ice. All require experience, athletic ability, and technical knowledge to maintain safety.

Sightseeing

Tourism is travel for pleasure or business; also the theory and practice of touring, the business of attracting, accommodating, and entertaining tourists, and the business of operating tours. Tourism may be international, or within the traveller’s country. The World Tourism Organization defines tourism more generally, in terms which go “beyond the common perception of tourism as being limited to holiday activity only”, as people “traveling to and staying in places outside their usual environment for not more than one consecutive year for leisure, business and other purposes”.

Dedicated road bicycles have drop handlebars and multiple gears, although there are single and fixed gear varieties. Road bikes also use narrow, high-pressure tires to decrease rolling resistance, and tend to be somewhat lighter than other types of bicycle. The drop handlebars are often positioned lower than the saddle in order to put the rider in a more aerodynamic position. In an effort to become more aerodynamic, some riders have begun using aerobars.

And when aerobars where invented is unclear but they seem to date back to the early 1980s. The light weight and aerodynamics of a road bike allows this type of bicycle to be the second most efficient self-powered means of transportation, behind only recumbent bicycles due to the latter’s higher aerodynamic efficiency.

Mountain bikes fitted with slick or semi-slick are also popular for commuters. Though less efficient, the upright riding position allows the cyclist a better view of traffic, and they can also be readily fitted with mudguards, cargo racks and other accessories. Mountain bikes are usually ridden on unpaved roads and tracks but they are not to be confused with cyclocross bikes.

Wildlife Safaris

A safari is an overland journey, usually a trip by tourists in Africa. In the past, the trip was often a big-game hunt, but today, safaris are often to observe and photograph wildlife—or hiking and sightseeing, as well.

In 1836 William Cornwallis Harris led an expedition purely to observe and record wildlife and landscapes by the expedition’s members. Harris established the safari style of journey, starting with a not too strenuous rising at first light, an energetic day walking, an afternoon rest then concluding with a formal dinner and telling stories in the evening over drinks and tobacco. The hunting aspect traditionally associated with the safari is said to have its origins in the early 1800s in the region of Évora, Alentejo, where villagers got together to hunt wild boar and reclaim land for farming.

Day 1: Johannesburg to Kruger National Park - South Africa

Welcome to South Africa, the World in One Country! Early this morning we leave the bustling city of Johannesburg and travel east in our overland tour vehicle.

Heading into the Mpumalanga Province we follow the old trade routes to Kruger National Park in the Lowveld region. Known as the wildlife safari capital of South Africa this region hosts many top game reserves, including the world-famous Kruger National Park.

This afternoon, we arrive at our first safari lodge in a private concession area within Kruger National Park. The safari lodge is set in an exclusive wildlife concession area, covering 11500 hectares of Kruger National Park. In the late afternoon, you can jump into your first game-viewing adventure on an optional sunset game drive in the concession area of Kruger Park. On this optional (extra cost) game drive, you'll explore the wilderness around camp, stopping for sundowners as you search for wildlife. Booking through your safari guide this morning when we depart is essential for this popular sundowner game drive.

The tented camp will be home for the first 3 nights of our overland safari adventure. We stay in permanent safari tents with en-suite bathrooms. This evening your overland tour guide tells you more about the South Africa Safari Adventure ahead as you relax around the campfire.

  • Included Activity: Sundowner Drive

Day 2: Kruger National Park - South Africa

Today, we explore the world-renowned Kruger National Park in an open-sided 4x4 safari vehicle. We spend a full day on thrilling game drives in Kruger Park, South Africa's leading safari destination.

Immerse yourself in the game-rich African bushveld that is Kruger National Park today. Our open-sided 4x4 safari vehicle provides excellent opportunities for spotting and photographing as many of the wild animals in Kruger Park as possible. Look out for giraffe towering over herds of grazing zebra, many different antelope species, hippos wallowing in pools and, if you're lucky, you may spot an endangered African Wild Dog or a shy leopard.

After an action-packed day on safari in Kruger, we return to our safari lodge. We spend another night in the exclusive concession area within Kruger National Park where access is restricted to guests staying at the safari lodge. Sit back around the campfire under the stars and relive the wildlife highlights of your first full day on safari in South Africa. Fall asleep to the sounds of nature in your permanent tented room with an en-suite bathroom.

After the morning bush walk, we take a scenic drive along the aptly named Panorama Route in the towering cliffs nearby. Here we explore one of the most scenic parts of South Africa as we follow the edge of the escarpment which separates the high-lying central plateau from the Kruger low lying Lowveld region. As we drive along the Panorama Route, we stop to admire the spectacular views along the majestic Blyde River Canyon, one of the largest vegetated canyons in the world. We pause at God's Window lookout, gazing over the Lowveld to the distant Mozambique mountains. We also visit the Bourke’s Luck Potholes - peculiar rock features created by water erosion over decades, and then stop to take in the majestic panoramic view of the canyon and the distinctive Three Rondavels hills.

Border formalities complete, we cross into the small landlocked country of Eswatini and wind our way through the mountains and forests of this small kingdom. The next destination on our South Africa Safari Adventure is the lush Ezulwini Valley, just south of Eswatini's capital Mbabane, and aptly named 'Valley of Heaven' for its rolling green hills of the Mdzimba Mountains stretching out as far as the eye can see. This semi-arid region of South Africa is known for its flat, open landscapes with big sheep farms and a scattering of remote towns.

Our drive through the vast Karoo takes us across the Gariep (Orange) River, South Africa's longest river. Driving through the hot, dry plains in our overland tour vehicle we arrive at our next stop, the historic town of Graaff-Reinet, the fourth-oldest town in South Africa.

This evening you can join a sundowner trip to the remote Valley of Desolation. Stop for sundowners and enjoy the breathtaking views of the rock formations of the valley as we gaze over the Camdeboo Plains and Graaff-Reinet town as the sun goes down. In winter, the Valley of Desolation trip is conducted on the following morning as a sunrise excursion. After getting a closer look at the local flora and fauna in the Valley of Desolation, we return to town. In Graaff Reinet, we stay at a historic hotel in twin share rooms with en-suite bathrooms. Day 14: Addo Elephant National Park - South Africa

This morning on our Lesotho, Eswatini & South Africa Safari, we drive back to Addo Elephant National Park for a second game drive. Our overland tour vehicle offers excellent views over the African bush. Elephants, buffalos, zebras, and other African animals are commonly sighted and, with some luck, we may spot lions or even a shy leopard.

After our rewarding wildlife safari in Addo Elephant Park, we head back to our guesthouse in Gqeberha.

  • Included Activities: Game Drive in Addo Park (in the overland safari truck)

Day 15: Gqeberha to Jeffreys Bay & Tsitsikamma National Park, Garden Route - South Africa

Early this morning we set off west into the beautiful Garden Route of South Africa. Along the way, we stop at the world-famous surfing destination of Jeffreys Bay, known as J-Bay. Then it is on to the forested Tsitsikamma area of the Garden Route, where we will spend the next two nights of our Africa Overland Tour.

Part of the larger Garden Route National Park, Tsitsikamma National Park is a diverse and scenic protected area, nestled between the Tsitsikamma Mountains and the Indian Ocean. The park stretches about 80kms along the coastline and includes a 5km belt of sea, making it one of the world's largest marine protected areas. In addition to the rich marine ecosystems protected by the national park, Tsitsikamma also features South Africa's endemic Fynbos biome, as well as indigenous forests. Between the marine habitats, Fynbos-covered hills, and forested ravines this park provides habitats for a diverse range of birds and animals.

For the next two nights of our Lesotho, Eswatini & South Africa Safari, we stay at a historic hotel a stone's throw from the magnificent Tsitsikamma National Park. Accommodation is in tastefully decorated rooms (twin-share) with en-suite bathrooms.

  • Included Activity: Stop in Jeffreys Bay

Day 16: Tsitsikamma National Park & Garden Route – South Africa

Day 16 of our Southern Africa Safari is all about enjoying the splendors of the Garden Route. This coastal region is a nature lover's paradise sprinkled with forests, mountains, lagoons, rugged cliffs, and sandy beaches.

In the morning we walk the first section of the legendary Otter Trail, one of the best hiking trails in South Africa. The hiking trail begins at Storms River in the Tsitsikamma National Park, following the rocky coastline. This challenging, but incredibly scenic hike takes us to a waterfall with a rock pool, and back. Alternatively, you can take it easy this morning and go for a swim in the sea, walk along the beach and in the indigenous forests, and cross the Storm's River suspension bridge.

In the afternoon you have the option of embarking on a tour called the Woodcutters Journey. This interesting journey reveals more about the indigenous flora and fauna of this rich ecosystem, as well as the local history of the Tsitsikamma area. You also have the option of doing a treetop canopy tour to view the indigenous forests of Tsitsikamma from a zip line up in the branches. Another optional activity is the daunting bungee jump at nearby Bloukrans Bridge. This is the highest commercial bungee-jumping bridge in the world, at 216 meters (709 feet) above the Bloukrans River.

At the end of an action-packed day of outdoor adventure and nature on the Garden Route, we return to our lodge for a laid-back evening.

  • Included Activity: Tsitsikamma National Park Entry Fees & Guided Hike
  • Optional Activities: Treetop Canopy Tour, Woodcutters Journey Tour, Bungee Jumping

Day 17: Tsitsikamma to Knysna, Oudtshoorn & Cango Caves - South Africa

Today we leave the Eastern Cape Province behind and enter the Western Cape Province of South Africa. We continue west along the beautiful Garden Route past beautiful Nature’s Valley and onto the charming seaside town of Knysna.

Our drive takes us inland via spectacular mountain passes into the Klein Karoo (Little Karoo) region. We make our way toward Oudtshoorn and the famous Cango Caves where we take a basic tour of these massive limestone caverns. After experiencing the immense underground caverns of Cango Caves and admiring the impressive rock formations, we continue to the nearby town of Oudtshoorn.

The town is best known for its ostriches, with a large number of ostrich farms found here. Tonight our Lesotho, Eswatini & South Africa Safari stays at a country guesthouse. Take a dip in the pool and enjoy a spectacular Karoo sunset.

  • Included Activities: Knysna Visit & Cango Caves Tour

Day 18: Oudtshoorn to Route 62 & Barrydale - South Africa

On the morning of day 18, we follow the roads of well-known Route 62 through the barren Klein Karoo. Along the way, we visit a colony of cheeky meerkats, stopping to watch the antics of these cute social creatures. We continue our drive, pausing to admire the local crafts and produce at quirky farmstalls dotting Route 62. One of our colorful stops is a bizarre country pub, with the eye-catching name of Ronnie's Sex Shop.

Continuing on Route 62 we make our way to the charming village of Barrydale. Here we settle in at our comfortable overnight guesthouse where we stay in modern en-suite rooms on a twin-share basis.

  • Included Activities: Meerkat Experience, Route 62, Stop at Ronnie’s Sex Shop

Day 19: Barrydale to Africa’s Southernmost tip, Cape Whale Coast & Cape Town - South Africa

Today our African safari adventure takes us through the farmlands and rural villages of the Cape Overberg towards Cape Town. Our first stop of the day is the southernmost point in Africa, Cape Agulhas. Here we stop to look out over the place where the Indian and Atlantic oceans merge and take photos at the southern tip of Africa.

Then we head on to the coastal town of Hermanus, Whale Watching capital of South Africa. Here we take a walk along the coastline on the boardwalk to look for southern white whales in season (July to November) and other marine life. Hermanus is one of the top whale-watching destinations in the world. After stretching our legs, we travel further along the Cape Whale Coast. This rugged coastal route stretches east from Rooi Els through seaside villages and dramatic landscapes with rocky cliffs, bays, rivers, farms, wilderness areas, and farmlands. At Betty's Bay, we visit the Stony Point Nature Reserve to see a large breeding colony of African Penguins.

We continue to Cape Town and the iconic Table Mountain. With the last leg of our overland tour of South Africa complete, our memorable journey finishes in the beautiful city of Cape Town.

  • Meals included: Breakfast & Lunch
  • Included Activities: Cape Agulhas southernmost point, Hermanus, Stony Point Penguin Colony

Ivory Coast, Morocco score World Cup qualifying wins

African champions Ivory Coast and World Cup semifinalists Morocco both won important points in World Cup qualification on Friday but Nigeria were held at home by South Africa and are still to win a match in the 2026 preliminaries.

Seko Fofana's 36th-minute strike marked a successful homecoming for the Ivorians, playing their first home match since winning the Africa Cup of Nations in February, as they beat Gabon 1-0 in Korhogo to go clear at the top of Group F.

A soft looking penalty saw Hakim Ziyech put Morocco ahead after six minutes against Zambia in Agadir in Group E but there was nothing fortuitous about their second in the 67th minute as Brahim Diaz's mazy run set up teenage debutant Eliesse Ben Seghir, who recently switched allegiance from France .

Zambia pulled a goal back from Edward Chilufya in the 80th minute but Morocco held out for 2-1 triumph.

Veteran Themba Zwane had South Africa ahead at halftime away in Uyo in Group C but it took Nigeria 37 seconds of the second half to equalise through former Manchester City junior Fisayo Dele-Bashiru.

Nigeria have now drawn their opening three qualifiers, two of them at home.

Earlier on Friday, Lesotho kept up their giant killing start to the qualifiers with a 2-0 win over Zimbabwe in Johannesburg.

Rethabile Rasethuntsa and Thabantso Jane scored in the first half of Zimbabwe's home match, which was played in neighbouring South Africa because of a ban on Zimbabwean stadiums, declared not up to standard for international matches.

Lesotho had held Nigeria in their opening qualifier in November and now have five points after three games.

Burundi also upset the odds as they held fellow east Africans Kenya 1-1 in neutral Lilongwe, Malawi with an 85th-minute equaliser from Sudi Abdallah after a defensive error.

Kenya, whose home game it was, had gone ahead in the 72nd minute through substitute Duke Abuya.

HOME VICTORIES

Both Mozambique and Uganda joined Algeria and Guinea at the head of Group G with two wins out of three matches after home victories on Friday.

Mozambique were 2-0 up against Somalia after 30 minutes but in the end had to hold on for a 2-1 victory while Mohamed Shaban got a 74th minute winner for Uganda at home to Botswana in Kampala.

Angola were a goal to the good after two minutes at home to Eswatini but could not add to Mabululu's effort. They still won, however, to stay unbeaten in Group D and join Libya at the top of the standings.

Rayon Raveloson grabbed a double as Madagascar won 2-1 in their island derby over the Comoros at Soccer City in Johannesburg on Friday to make it two wins out of three in Group I.

Madagascar now have six points to join the Comoros, who had won both their opening qualifiers in November, and Ghana at the top of Group I in the battle for a place at the 2026 finals in North America.

There are nine African qualifying groups with the winner advancing to the finals. A potential extra place is available for the best placed runner-up through playoffs with other continents.

The last two matches in the third round of qualification will be played on Saturday with the fourth round of fixtures starting on Sunday.

7 juin Maroc - Zambie Agadir, 20h00

11 juin Zambie - Tanzanie Ndola, 15h00 Congo - Maroc Kinshasa, 17h00

johannesburg to lesotho tour

8 juin Gambie - Seychelles Berkane, 17h00

11 juin Kenya - Côte d'Ivoire Lilongwe, 15h00 Gabon - Gambie Franceville, 20h00 Seychelles - Burundi Berkane, 20h00
