6 Amazing Black-Owned Wellness Retreats Making a Difference

Last updated June 14, 2024

We are all in for Women of Color wellness travel. Meet six change makers rewriting the narrative with their Black-owned wellness retreats.

Being Black and living in America does come with pros. It gifts us that coveted golden ticket—our passport—which grants us entry into almost every country in the world.

  • Whole Experience
  • IMARA Retreat
  • Leisano Living
  • Africa With Us
  • Black Women Healing Retreats

However, the weight of our “Blackness” and “womanhood” is heavy, both collectively and individually. While no two stories are alike, this heaviness can wear down even the strongest of souls.

Living in a system that doesn’t necessarily operate for us, but rather against us, can be disheartening. It can also be troubling and create highly toxic environments both within our hearts and spirit.

Despite this, community, sisterhood and travel are rewriting the narrative that Black women share, giving us the space to heal.

Six Black-Owned Wellness Retreats for Mind, Body & Soul

While no one path to healing and pursuing wellness (mind, body, soul) is identical, there are some change-makers on the scene. These Black women are spreading love and teaching us how to heal our souls so we can heal collectively.

1. Whole Experience

Pack your bags as you head to the heart of Kenya with Whole Experience. Centered around building a supportive community to restore your wellness, this Black-owned wellness retreat offers transformational retreats and holistic coaching programs.

Founders Tameika G and Whitney Gee share the why behind establishing Whole Experience. “We saw the retreat space as being very linear. It wasn’t super inclusive of women of all shapes, sizes and walks of life. So, we created a retreat space for everyBODY. One that empowers Women of Color to come together and focus on their health and wellness.”

All we is ask is that you bring an open mind to our retreats. Tameika G and Whitney Gee, founders of Whole Experience

Whole Experience retreats blend meditation, yoga, fitness and wellness workshops with a healthy dose of JOY! Adventures and tours include safaris in Kenya or salsa dancing in Colombia. In addition, the retreats create an environment to build sisterhood and community.

Whole Experience retreat tip: Attendees do a lot of unique activities that they may not be used to. These include sound therapy healing and cocoa ceremonies. When you come with an open mind and no expectations, it allows you to be fully present and to experience something totally new.

2. IMARA Retreat

If you have an inkling for transformative retreats that deepen your connection to your higher self, IMARA Retreat provides just this. You’ll explore the depths of your power, create long-lasting sisters-ships and work on personal development. All while visiting a new country.

IMARA is an immersive and emotive life-changing experience that helps women reconnect to their true power. Greater personal awareness is created and new intentions are set to help attendees reconnect to self and others, in deeper, more meaningful ways.

All this via a specially curated program—leaving an attendee refreshed and renewed ready to take on the world as a better version of herself.

This Black-owned wellness retreat offers a sacred space to blossom, with a focus on wellness, personal and professional development that both invigorates and educates simultaneously.

Founded by Christina Rice, OMNoire is all about attracting high vibes focusing on three pillars: breathing, experience and life.

This Black-owned wellness retreat aims to build community and foster a sacred space for Black women and Women of Color to thrive and embrace the journey of life.

OMNoire has been hosting retreats since 2017 with Black women from around the world who are looking to reset, recharge and redesign their lives.

The immersive luxury retreat experiences and adventures focus on bringing the power of OM to life. Retreats take place in locations from a wine + wellness escape in California’s wine country to a mindful goddess expedition in Columbia.

4. Leisano Living

Through mindfulness and meditation, Leisano Living offers a way to step outside of your comfort zone and take a pause (deep breath here) as you relax, recharge and restore your soul.

Owner Leisan Echols started Leisano Living for very personal reasons. After boldly walking away from her “dream job” due to burnout in January 2018, she embarked on a six-month adventure to wellness that took her across the Caribbean and Southeast Asia.

As a dietitian and exercise physiologist who strongly believes in the healing power of travel, Echols was determined to build a business that provides Black women with tools to optimize their well-being and immerses them in new cultures to promote self-discovery.

Step outside of your comfort zone—this is when the magic happens. Leisan Echols, owner of Leisano Living

“That journey in 2018 breathed new life into me, giving me clarity and direction on what I would do next. And in short, that’s how Leisano Living was born,” says Echols.

Today Leisano Living is a successful Black-owned wellness travel brand and pioneer in research-based health retreats and programs.

Leisano Living retreat tip : Being open to new experiences allows you to connect fully, push past physical and mental barriers, and reach a different level of freedom. At the same time, you will find beautiful pieces of yourself along the way that you didn’t even know existed.

5. Africa With Us

Looking for active retreats with expert local guides? Africa With Us is all about understanding, spreading and experiencing the exoticness and richness of Kukuwa Fitness, a combination of African dance, fitness, cultural exploration and community service.

This Black-owned wellness retreat will have you swaying your body to a variety of African music. You will dance and dine at various retreat destinations from Senegal and the Gambia to Botswana and South Africa.

Additionally, you’ll sample various cuisines to enrich your body, participate in community service to enrich your soul and have incredible cultural experiences to enrich your mind.

6. Black Women Healing Retreats

Owner Satya traded in her heels for sandals only to discover that she was happier barefoot. And founded the first wellness and healing sanctuary centered around Black women.

All about crafting luxury experiences for the Black woman traveler, Black Women Healing Retreats takes luxury to the next level. And we’re not talking about fashion, but luxury in the sense of deserving to feel good (mentally, physically, emotionally, spiritually).

Choose your personal path (healing, yoga and meditation, or self-care) as you jungle bathe in serene greeneries ranging from Jamaica to Costa Rica at this Black-owned wellness retreat.

Lake Nakuru’s claim to fame is anchored on its flamingo’s and the over 400 species of birds found here. The lake itself is a soda lake on the floor of the rift valley. The sight of the, at times millions of flamingos is quite spectacular. From a distance the lake appears ringed in pink. The Lake has also earned a reputation as an important haven for endangered species- particularly the Rothschild Giraffe and the black and white rhino. Day trip to Suzdal from Moscow: transport, sights, maps and tips

imara travel

 DAY TRIP TO SUZDAL

Suzdal is one of the most popular destinations on the Golden Ring and the whole city is often described as an open-air museum.  The city has no railway station and practically no heavy industry, meaning that is has preserved its provincial charm and a great deal of architectural monuments.

imara travel

From Moscow, Suzdal is not as easy to get to as Sergiev Posad (the closest Golden Ring city to the capital) but it is worth going the extra distance as Suzdal provides more of a contrast from Moscow.  If you make use of high-speed trains it is possible and not too demanding to visit for even just a day, but of course spending the night there is recommended to soak in the atmosphere or to combine it with a visit to neighbouring Vladimir.  As the city is a very popular tourist destination you will have no problem finding a cafe or guesthouse there.  There is practically no public transport in the city, but the city is small and most sights are located relatively close to each other.

Getting There and Back

imara travel

Via Vladimir

imara travel

Direct to Suzdal

Buses directly to Suzdal leave from Moscow’s Schyolkovsky Bus Station.  There are about 9 buses a day and it takes around 4½ hours depending on traffic.  The buses stop at Vladimir too.  Using this option will mean a rather exhausting day trip.

Orientation and Main Sights

imara travel

Suzdal is a relatively small city and it is not difficult to walk around the city to see most of the sights.

Suzdal

The main road in the city is Ulitsa Lenina which runs north across the whole city.

Suzdal

The main sights of Suzdal are located either on or just off this road, including the two main sights: the Suzdal Kremlin in the south and the Spaso-Yevfimiev Monastery in the north.

Suzdal

More information about Suzdal can be found on our Suzdal  pages.

imara travel

Suzdal is famous for its medovukha (mead) which is an alcoholic drink made out of honey.  It can be drunk either hot or cold, meaning it perfect in both summer and winter, and you will find it on practically every menu in the city.  There are various flavours of the drink available and even a non-alcoholic version.  In addition to medovukha, you can find all traditional Russian souvenirs in the city and there is a big souvenir market on Torgovaya Ploschad.

How to get to Suzdal from Moscow

imara travel

If you are ever in Moscow, you should look at The Golden Ring , a ring of towns and cities north east of Moscow which played an important part in the formation of Russia and the Russian Orthodox Church. The towns themselves are almost like museums and none more so than the jewel of the Golden Ring, Suzdal . You have to visit this town if you are in Moscow and I will tell you exactly how to get to Suzdal from Moscow.

You can do this in a return day trip to Moscow, just, but I recommend staying the night in Suzdal. That will give you the afternoon on the 1st day and the morning and early afternoon on the 2nd day to explore which should be enough time. You can get a bus from Moscow to Suzdal. However, there is only one bus a day and it is not very comfortable. A better option is to get a train to the nearby city of Vladimir and from there get a bus to Suzdal. There are multiple trains every day from Moscow and buses are almost every 30 minutes so you will not have to wait long in Vladimir.

Getting the train to Vladimir

Go to the state run website for Russian railways . In the departure station, click (or type) ‘MOSKVA’, in the arrival station type ‘VLADIMIR”, select your departure date (and return if you will go back to Moscow the next day) and click on the buy ticket button. You will have multiple trains to choose from. The fastest trains do the journey in about 1 hour 45 minutes. Be sure to check which of the Moscow train stations your train will depart from. More than likely this will be Mockva Kurskaia. Whichever station it is, you can get there very easily by using the metro .

Getting Bus from Vladimir to Suzdal

When you arrive at the train station, follow everyone else that is leaving the train station. When you get outside, if you look across the street, you will see the bus station. The facilities in the bus and train station are pretty basic. the train station is a little better so if you want a coffee or something to eat, I would get it there.

In the bus station go to the ticket office and get a single ticket to Suzdal. Something like “odin billet Suzdal” should be enough to be understood. The ticket costs 98.50 rubles so its easier to have a 100 ruble note to get change from.

Staying the night in Suzdal

There are a lot of accommodation options available in Suzdal. The place i stayed is Suzdal Hotel . It is actually a house and they have a few rooms available. The breakfast that is included is very very good. Trust me on this. They will even collect you from the bus station in Suzdal and bring you back the next day.

Returning to Vladimir (and Moscow)

To return to Vladimir, just repeat these steps in the opposite direction – return to the bus station in Suzdal, buy a ticket to Vladimir and continue your onward journey in Russia. Simples! 😉

I went to Suzdal over 13years ago for Christmas, I was on an on the go tour and they organised the train for us which was a very interesting journey. I would love to go back and explore longer. I am definitely impressed that you have done it on your own and it sounds like you had a bit of an adventure :).

imara travel

Hi Melissa, it certainly was an adventure that’s for sure! Though sometimes, there is something to be said for letting other people take care of things for you and getting to relax and not be too stressed.

Moscow is a place with an intriguing and enigmatic history. Suzdal seems to be a charming place with a rich heritage. As you have mentioned it seems to be a living museum of sorts. Nice step by step instruction on getting to Suzdal from Moscow. This is indeed an invaluable resource for first-time travelers to Russia.

Thank you very much for your kind words. I hope some people find it useful!

' src=

Thanks for recommending the Suzdal Hotel, since I prefer to stay in small cozy places with good breakfast. And the service of taking the guests from and to the bus station in Suzdal is a great plus!

Yeah I agree. I would rather stay in a family type place than a bigger place too!

' src=

I have never heard of this town and it sounds like a great place to visit if you are already in Moscow. Your instructions are very helpful and I like how you put a photo of the ticket.

You’re welcome Candy. If you don’t speak the language, Russia can be difficult to get around.

Michael Hodgson

Fantastic detail and extremely useful post for anyone wanting to explore outside of Moscow. Suzdal does sound fascinating.

Thanks Michael!

' src=

This seems like quite an experience! I am surprised that I haven’t heard of Suzdal before but as soon as I go to Moscow, I will have to do a day trip to there. Is a day trip enough to explore Suzdal?

Hey Lydia, you certainly can! If you go early enough in the day to Vladimir, you can probably get 6-7 hours in Suzdal.

' src=

This is a great post with quite a few good details. Pics looks so amazing. Thanks for sharing and keep up the good work.

Thanks. Glad you enjoyed!

' src=

Wow, you are adventurous! I spent years upon years in Russia and never made it to Suzdal. Never realized Vladimir was less than 2 hrs away from Moscow.

Thanks Jenia. Russia is a huge place. You could live there your entire life and not see it all!

' src=

Thanks for the instructions. If I ever want to visit Suzdal I now know how to get there from Moscow via Vladimir.

You’re welcome!

Lauren Pears

Suzdal sounds really lovely! I need to travel to more places where there will be snow rather than just constantly chasing the sun 😉

I know what you mean! After 4 months of winter in Russia though, I was craving the sun so much!

' src=

I had never heard of Suzdal until now. Thank you for introducing me to a new place. It looks so calm and quiet under the snow. What are some things to do in Suzdal?

I think it is the sort of place you go to get away from the craziness of big cities and have some slower, quiet time. If my memory is correct, they also have a cucumber festival once a year every July. Apparently the cucumbers of the area are very good!

Is it possible to visit Russia as a tourist right now? (Q&A)

imara travel

Who can enter Russia as a tourist?

At present, people from 80 countries can enter Russia. There are two main conditions: first, one must be a citizen of that country or have a permanent residence permit; and second - one needs to enter Russia by plane. The primary document that regulates entry during the coronavirus pandemic is Order no. 635-r (March 16, 2020), which is regularly updated.

Some of the countries on the list include the United States, Britain, Greece, Germany, Tunisia, Israel, Japan, Armenia, Qatar, Portugal, Mexico, Croatia, Belgium, China, France, Denmark, New Zealand, Iran, Peru, Norway and Argentina. Click here for the full list.

In the meantime, any country with which Russia currently has a travel agreement can serve as the port of departure (however, the transit country must be on the above list).

What type of visa is required?

Those who already have a valid Russian visa - and citizens of the above countries - can enter Russia using that visa. Those who do require a visa can submit their documents at the Russian consulate in their home country.

imara travel

What is still not possible at this point is obtaining a unified electronic visa (a type of visa that is valid for up to 16 days, takes only four days to process and does not require submitting any documents relating to the purpose of visit). Therefore, in order to receive a regular tourist visa (valid up to six months) it is necessary to have a confirmed accommodation booking or an agreement with a travel agency.

Is a COVID test required?

Yes, PCR tests must be performed no earlier than 48 hours before arriving in Russia. The results must be printed in Russian or English (this is required even if you received a Sputnik-V vaccine shot). If you’re flying with children, they, too, must obtain a test, irrespective of age. And a form for arrivals must be filled in before entering the country.

Who is not affected by the rules?

These restrictions don’t apply to foreigners with a valid Russian residence permit or those with close relatives. They can enter Russia from any country using any means of transportation, including by land.

imara travel

They also do not apply to partially recognized republics of Abkhazia and South Ossetia, as well as citizens of Belarus (or those with Belarusian permanent residence permits), Kazakhstan and citizens of the Donetsk and Lugansk national republics. Entering by land is also possible when traveling from Mongolia or China.

Furthermore, if Eurasian Economic Union citizens cross over by land, they don’t have to submit a coronavirus test or fill out the arrivals form.

Is vaccination required?

No. The QR codes required for visiting public gatherings before spring (including cafes, bars, hotels, etc.) are no longer required in the majority of regions. The same goes for various other COVID restrictions: regions have the final say, but almost all have been lifted.

What about masks?

imara travel

Masks are also no longer a requirement. However, some regions still require people to wear masks in some places, including stores, pharmacies, shopping malls, movie theaters and so on. In Moscow, the rule on masks has been completely lifted, while, for example, in Kaliningrad, some places still enforce them.

Are there any quarantine regulations in place?

No, you will not be required to quarantine on arrival to Russia. However, if you get sick in Russia, you will have to be quarantined for a period of seven days at your own expense. Those who have come in contact with infected people do not require quarantining (provided they did not contract the coronavirus).

Important! In many countries, there are still restrictions on LEAVING for the purpose of tourism, so having a Russian visa does not guarantee you will get permission to leave your country. This must be clarified before making any trips.

The information listed here is valid as of June 1, 2022.
