Comedian Gabriel Iglesias is out on his “Don’t Worry, Be Fluffy” Tour. Iglesias, known for his “I’m Not Fat … I’m Fluffy” special, is making stops in Nashville, Tenn., and Mobile, Ala.

Iglesias, 49, has appeared in numerous specials on Comedy Central and Netflix. He is also an actor who has appeared in 2012′s “Magic Mike” and 2015′s “Magic Mike XXL.”

ATLANTA/May 22, 2023 – ​ Comedian Gabriel “Fluffy” Iglesias will be performing at the award-winning State Farm Arena on October 19, 2023 . This is part of his all new 2023 Gabriel Iglesias: Don’t Worry Be Fluffy Tour. ​Tickets can be purchased at Fluffyguy.com or at Ticketmaster.com starting at 10 a.m. on Thursday, May 25th.

Gabriel “Fluffy” Iglesias is one of the world’s most successful stand-up comedians. He recently became the second highest grossing touring comedian and is one of the most watched comedians on YouTube with over 1.1 billion views and over 25 million fans on social media. 

Iglesias has been included in The Hollywood Reporter’s “Top 40 Comedy Players” issue alongside comedy giants Jerry Seinfeld, Chris Rock and Lorne Michaels. Last year he also was honored with the cover of Variety’s comedy issue. The comedian has had the distinct honor of being one of the few to headline and sell-out Madison Square Garden in New York, Crypto.com Arena in Los Angeles and The Sydney Opera House in Australia. 

On TV, Iglesias is the star and executive producer of the Netflix original comedy series,  Mr. Iglesias , which is currently streaming 3 seasons. Iglesias plays a good-natured public high school teacher who works at his alma mater. He takes on teaching gifted but misfit kids to not only save them from being “counseled out” by a bully bureaucrat Assistant Principal, but also to help them unlock their full potential. In 2020, the show won best Primetime Comedy at The Imagen Awards, which recognizes positive portrayals of Latinx actors/actresses in the entertainment industry.

In addition to his comedy series, Iglesias penned a deal with Netflix to release two stand-up comedy specials. The first, titled  One Show Fits All , was filmed in front of a sold-out audience at the Toyota Center in Houston and debuted in January 2019. The second,  Stadium Fluffy  premiered on October 18 th  and was taped in front of a crowd of 55,000 fans at Dodger Stadium in Los Angeles, where Iglesias made history as the first comedian to perform at and sellout the largest MLB stadium in the US. 

Both of these specials are follow-ups to his highly successful 2016 special,  I’m Sorry For What I Said When I Was   Hungry,  which was filmed   at the Allstate Arena in Chicago to two sold-out shows with a total of 20,000 fans in attendance.

Up next, Iglesias will co-star Tim Allen in the second season of Disney+’s  The Santa Clauses.  Iglesias will play Kris Kringle, the owner and operator of a Christmas-themed amusement park called Santaland. Sweet, happy, and perpetually-optimistic, Kris is a warm, generous soul who is determined to keep his struggling theme park afloat. However, his belief in Santa and love for all things Christmas may not be enough. 

Feature film credits include co-starring roles in  Magic Mike ,  Magic Mike XXL  and  A Haunted House 2 . Gabriel’s voice has been heard in many animated films including the recent  Space Jam: A New Legacy  as “Speedy Gonzales” streaming on HBOMAX. In 2017, Iglesias voiced the role of “Head Clerk” in Pixar’s Academy Award nominated animated film  Coco . He also voiced “Babo” in  Ugly Dolls , “Rufus the Dog” in Sony’s Golden Globe nominated animated holiday film  The Star  and “Cuatro” in Fox 20th Century Film’s Academy Award nominated animated film  Ferdinand . Gabriel is one of a handful of comedians with a theatrically released stand-up concert comedy film,  TheFluffy Movie.

On the small screen,  Fluffy’s Food Adventures,  a non-scripted comedic docu-follow series completed a 3-season run on FUSE TV in 2017. Gabriel was a recurring guest star on the ABC sitcom  Cristela , and also guest-starred in an episode of ABC’s hit comedy  Modern Family.  Comedy Central aired Iglesias’ hit series  Stand-Up Revolution  for 3 seasons. Comedy Central also aired  Gabriel Iglesias: Aloha Fluffy  in an unprecedented two-night comedy special to over 15 million viewers. The special was a follow-up to his previous DVD specials,  Hot & Fluffy  and  I’m Not Fat...I’m Fluffy , which have sold millions of copies. 

Gabriel Iglesias is the youngest of six children, raised by a single mother in Long Beach, CA. It was during his childhood that he developed a strong sense of humor to deal with the obstacles he faced. COMEDIAN GABRIEL “FLUFFY” IGLESIAS ANNOUNCES TAMPA TOUR STOP

TAMPA, FL – Comedian Gabriel “Fluffy” Iglesias will be performing at Tampa’s AMALIE Arena on Saturday, Nov. 9 at 7:00 p.m. This is part of his Gabriel Iglesias: Don’t Worry Be Fluffy Tour. ​Tickets can be purchased at Fluffyguy.com.

Gabriel “Fluffy” Iglesias is one of the world’s most successful stand-up comedians. He recently became the second highest grossing touring comedian and is one of the most watched comedians on YouTube with over 1.1 billion views and over 25 million fans on social media. 

Iglesias has been included in The Hollywood Reporter’s “Top 40 Comedy Players” issue alongside comedy giants Jerry Seinfeld, Chris Rock and Lorne Michaels. Last year he also was honored with the cover of Variety’s comedy issue. The comedian has had the distinct honor of being one of the few to headline and sell-out Madison Square Garden in New York, Crypto.com Arena in Los Angeles and The Sydney Opera House in Australia. 

On TV, Iglesias is the star and executive producer of the Netflix original comedy series,  Mr. Iglesias , which is currently streaming three seasons. Iglesias plays a good-natured public high school teacher who works at his alma mater. He takes on teaching gifted but misfit kids to not only save them from being “counseled out” by a bully bureaucrat Assistant Principal, but also to help them unlock their full potential. In 2020, the show won best Primetime Comedy at The Imagen Awards, which recognizes positive portrayals of Latinx actors/actresses in the entertainment industry.

In addition to his comedy series, Iglesias penned a deal with Netflix to release two stand-up comedy specials. The first, titled  One Show Fits All , was filmed in front of a sold-out audience at the Toyota Center in Houston and debuted in January 2019. The second,  Stadium Fluffy  premiered on October 18 th  and was taped in front of a crowd of 55,000 fans at Dodger Stadium in Los Angeles, where Iglesias made history as the first comedian to perform at and sellout the largest MLB stadium in the US. 

Both of these specials are follow-ups to his highly successful 2016 special,  I’m Sorry For What I Said When I Was   Hungry,  which was filmed   at the Allstate Arena in Chicago to two sold-out shows with a total of 20,000 fans in attendance.

On the small screen,  Fluffy’s Food Adventures,  a non-scripted comedic docu-follow series completed a three-season run on FUSE TV in 2017. Gabriel was a recurring guest star on the ABC sitcom  Cristela , and also guest-starred in an episode of ABC’s hit comedy  Modern Family.  Comedy Central aired Iglesias’ hit series  Stand-Up Revolution  for three seasons. Comedy Central also aired  Gabriel Iglesias: Aloha Fluffy  in an unprecedented two-night comedy special to over 15 million viewers. The special was a follow-up to his previous DVD specials,  Hot & Fluffy  and  I’m Not Fat...I’m Fluffy , which have sold millions of copies. 

Gabriel Iglesias is the youngest of six children, raised by a single mother in Long Beach, CA. It was during his childhood that he developed a strong sense of humor to deal with the obstacles he faced. Gabriel “Fluffy” Iglesias is one of the world’s most successful stand-up comedians. He recently became the second highest grossing touring comedian and is one of the most watched comedians on YouTube with over 1.1 billion views and over 25 million fans on social media.

Iglesias has been included in The Hollywood Reporter’s “Top 40 Comedy Players” issue alongside comedy giants Jerry Seinfeld, Chris Rock and Lorne Michaels. Last year he also was honored with the cover of Variety’s comedy issue. The comedian has had the distinct honor of being one of the few to headline and sell-out Madison Square Garden in New York, Crypto.com Arena in Los Angeles and The Sydney Opera House in Australia.

On TV,Iglesiasis the star and executive producer ofthe Netflix original comedy series,Mr.Iglesias, which is currently streaming 3 seasons.Iglesiasplays a good- natured public high school teacher who works at his alma mater. He takes on teaching gifted but misfit kids to not only save them from being “counseled out” by a bully bureaucrat Assistant Principal, but also to help them unlock their full potential. In 2020, the show won best Primetime Comedy at The Imagen Awards, which recognizes positive portrayals of Latinx actors/actresses in the entertainment industry.

In addition to his comedy series, Iglesias penned a deal with Netflix to release two stand- up comedy specials. The first, titled One Show Fits All, was filmed in front of a sold-out audience at the Toyota Center in Houston and debuted in January 2019. The second, Stadium Fluffy premiered on October 18th and was taped in front of a crowd of 55,000 fans at Dodger Stadium in Los Angeles, where Iglesias made history as the first comedian to perform at and sellout the largest MLB stadium in the US.

Both of these specials are follow-ups to his highly successful 2016 special, I’m Sorry For What I Said When I Was Hungry, which was filmed at the Allstate Arena in Chicago to two sold-out shows with a total of 20,000 fans in attendance.

Iglesias is hosting WWE Rivals on A&E

Gabriel “Fluffy” Iglesias is one of the world’s funniest comedians. And he is also a devoted fan of WWE.

Beginning this Sunday, Iglesias joins WWE Rivals on A&E to lead a roundtable that will feature the likes of Kevin Nash, Sean Waltman, and Natalya Neidhart. Episodes will offer a deep dive into memorable rivalries, including Hulk Hogan-Randy Savage, Ric Flair-Dusty Rhodes, and John Cena-Batista.

The youngest of six, Iglesias was raised by his mother in Long Beach, California. He grew up a passionate fan of professional wrestling, an interest that has remained with him. Now 47, Iglesias was thrilled with the way WrestleMania 40 unfolded, and he was there to witness Cody Rhodes finally win the WWE championship.

“This year was my fourteenth WrestleMania,” said Iglesias. “Wrestling has been part of my life since I was a kid. I’m still in love with it.”

Speaking with Sports Illustrated , Iglesias discussed his affinity for professional wrestling, how he became the host of WWE Rivals , and the differences between comedy and wrestling.

Justin Barrasso: How did your connection form with WWE?

Gabriel “Fluffy” Iglesias: I’ve been a huge fan of WWE forever–since I was a child. I’m a kid living the dream. I feel like I’m living multiple dreams right now. I made friends with people in the grind way back in the day. Not just the superstars, but I was friends with referees, people working backstage, and the grips and others behind the scenes.

When my career started taking off, I had Vickie Guerrero at a show, Rey Mysterio at a show, Dolph Ziggler at a show. All these people from WWE started coming to shows, and next thing you know, I’m talking with Roddy Piper and DDP and Scott Hall. A lot of the guys liked stand-up, especially because they had ideas of doing shows on stage talking about the business.

Barrasso:  Just over a decade ago, you were part of the film Magic Mike with Kevin Nash. He is one of your co-hosts on WWE Rivals . Was there an instant connection between the two of you?

Iglesias: It was an automatic connection. I was more geeked out that I was working with Kevin Nash than I was about working with Matthew McConaughey or Channing Tatum. For me, I immediately gravitated to Kevin. I was in the company of a wrestling god.

Barrasso:  Hosting this show allowed you an opportunity to highlight a plethora of wrestling’s best feuds.

Iglesias: I was reliving my childhood. The rivalry between Dusty Rhodes and Ric Flair, I watched it when I was a kid. So when I was asked to host, it was like, ‘Would I like to sit among the superstars and talk about matches I grew up watching?’ Yes, yes, I would. These are matches I watched on pay-per-view–or stole on cable [laughs].

I know my lane. I am not a WWE superstar, but I am a fan of the WWE superstars. And I’m as real as it gets when it comes to being a fan. A lot of times, people come in and promote whatever it is they’re doing with WWE because WWE has such a wide reach. For me, being part of this is one of the most organic things I’ve ever done. It just felt so natural.

Barrasso:  Is this a chance for viewers to learn parts of the rivalries they never knew? Enjoy some great moments from the past? Or a combination of the two?

Iglesias: Expect a lot of insight. JBL is part of the show, and that man is a vault of knowledge. I was scared to meet him, but we became friends. He knows the story behind the story behind the story. No diss on Paul Heyman, but he’s the wise man at our table. He knows wrestling inside and out.

For me, I approached it as a fan. My questions might not be the same. I wanted to know who got along with who–and if it ever led to issues backstage. Also, were there any snacks backstage? My stuff is out of the box and random, a lot different from anyone else. But I was a kid in a candy store talking matches. These are matches that helped build the foundation for where we are now.

Barrasso:  What’s more cutthroat: comedy or professional wrestling?

Iglesias:  I feel like, in comedy, you have a lot more control over your career than you do in professional wrestling. In professional wrestling, you have to rely on a lot of people to guide you. That’s not to say it isn’t the case in stand-up–but with comedy, I am the actor, the director, the writer, the producer, and I have the final say over everything. Yes, I have a manager, I have an agent, I have people who provide opportunities for me, whether that’s a publicist or a business manager. There are a lot of people involved, but I think you have a little more control in comedy, which is what makes wrestling so tough.

Barrasso: Why should people carve out time to watch WWE Rivals ?

Iglesias: You’re going to laugh, you’re going to learn, you’re going to see a bunch of wrestlers hanging out and enjoying themselves. You’ll see superstars from yesterday hanging out with superstars from today, and you throw a knucklehead fan like me in the middle, it’s a fun time. We all had such a great time taping this show. It’s a show that highlights our love for professional wrestling.

Standup comedians often play casinos as part of their tours, but Gabriel “Fluffy” Iglesias is taking it to another level. Iglesias’ upcoming performance at Agua Caliente Resort Casino Spa Rancho Mirage will mark the 25th time he’s presented his show at the casino’s venue.

“Clearly, I hate change,” Iglesias joked in a phone interview ahead of his three performances at the Rancho Mirage property on Friday, May 3, Saturday, May 4 and Sunday, May 5. “It’s going to be a great time. I bring a great show with really good production. There’s nothing like it but wrestling. My shows like WWE meets the Food Network.”

The 47-year-old Long Beach resident known for his trademark Hawaiian shirts grew up in Southern California, including Riverside, Santa Ana, Baldwin Park and Compton. He says he enjoys playing roulette and checking out the cocktail menus at casinos but for Iglesias, Agua Caliente Resort Casino Spa Rancho Mirage holds a sentimental value.

“For my mom and I, that was our little hangout,” he said. “She would always go with me, and without getting too emotional about it, she passed away about 10 years ago. So it was one of those things where it was a nice place to go and remember her. That particular venue was one of those places where there were always good memories.”

In 2022, he made history as the first comedian to headline Dodger Stadium which was later released as a Netflix special dubbed “Stadium Fluffy.” He’s also taken on more prominent T.V. roles, joining George Lopez’s sitcom “Lopez vs. Lopez” for season 2 and becoming a regular on “The Santa Clauses.”

Before his three shows in Rancho Mirage, Iglesias talked with Southern California News Group about headlining the baseball stadium, sharing the stage with George Lopez, social media’s impact on comedy and more. The following conversation was edited for space and clarity.

Q: You’ve performed some massive sell-out shows, including famously at Dodgers Stadium. How did you feel after doing that performance?

Iglesias: I felt very hungover the next day, and I might’ve celebrated a bit onstage. The next day was very surreal. My head and stomach were hurting but I’ve never been happier. It was the greatest day of my life. The whole next day, I just saying, ‘Wow, I can’t believe that happened.’

Q: You shared the stage with comedian George Lopez for the Golden Globes. Was it the first time you two have done something together like that?

Iglesias:  We haven’t worked together since about 2000. We were on a television show called ‘Que Locos’ on Galavisión and he was one of the hosts. I was an up-and-coming comedian and that was the first time we got to work together. We didn’t really run into each other again until the Golden Globes. I thought that was really cool that the two of us could do that together. I love the fact that people could see us working together on such a huge stage. While everybody was focused on Taylor Swift, I’m telling George, ‘Do you realize how big this is?’ The two of us on that stage together?’ We’re living in a time where we’re all watching other comedians tear each other down so I thought it was really awesome that we could do that.

Q: Did you see people react when Lopez jokingly mispronounced Pedro Pascal’s name? How did you feel about it?

Iglesias: Well, that particular night, the Golden Globes crowd was challenging. But I felt like our little bit went over well, considering the short time we were up there. But with the Pedro Pascal joke, you could see some people were like, ‘Wait a minute’ and it was something that George improvised and that wasn’t part of the script.

Q: There is a lot of talk right now about Latino representation in the media and in Hollywood. How do you feel about  representation in the current environment?

Iglesias: If I relied strictly on Hollywood to make me, I’d still be at my day job.

All I heard when I was starting out was no. I couldn’t get into comedy clubs. Since I couldn’t get into comedy clubs, I performed wherever they would allow me to perform: at quinceañeras, barbecues and little holes in the wall until I was able to get myself into a position where somebody could help me get into a comedy club. By the time I got there, I was seasoned because I was used to performing in environments that were not conducive to comedy. So of course, I came out killing it out of the gate because I was used to people throwing bottles and calling me fat from the crowd and threatening me in a parking lot.

Sometimes we spend too much time feeling held down, feeling oppressed, feeling pushed back. I think we can grow out of that. It was not Hollywood who put me here. It was me making a decision to take matters into my own hands.

Q: Speaking of taking matters into your own hands: What do you think of comedians who are succeeding because of their social media presence?

Iglesias: Social media is a double-edged sword because it’s one of those things where, yes, you can promote yourself and get your content out there quickly, but there’s something to be said about taking your time to do it right.

There are a lot of people out there who have gotten sparks, and then they go out and do their shows but unfortunately, all they have is their two or three minutes that went viral. They don’t have enough to sustain a full show because they haven’t been around long enough to hone in their craft and really build something to have a strong show. For most comics, it takes anywhere from 10 to 15 years to have a solid act where you can tour, headline and work.

So to pick the fast pass with social media, sometimes it doesn’t work but sometimes it does and they’ll catch on. Most of the time, I think that you’re missing out on the struggle and you’re missing out on the growth.

Q: If you could perform for any person or people living or dead, who would they be and why?

Iglesias: This isn’t a specific person but I would like to perform in the ’70s for an audience just to see what that would feel like. I feel like in the ’70s it was the last time where you could say anything you wanted up there and people knew you were just a comedian. Nobody was going to be pissed off when they got it in the parking lot. There were also no cell phones to record you and no social media. There was none of that and it was just people out having a good time.

Q: What’s one of the funniest situations you’ve been in that at the time was super serious but you had to prevent yourself from laughing?

Iglesias: I got a massage yesterday for my messed-up sciatica. I get massages regularly and usually I’m on my back or on my front. That’s how you lay down on the table. I kept complaining about my side and she goes, ‘Well, why don’t you lay down the side,’ and I’m like, ‘Oh, OK, let’s do that and it was awesome. I go, ‘Man, this is great,’ and she goes, ‘Yeah, I do this all the time for pregnant ladies.’ So, I’m like, Wow, OK, I guess I’m six months.

Actor, comedian and WWE superfan Gabriel “Fluffy” Iglesias is the new host of “ WWE Rivals ” on A&E.

“Fluffy,” who was born in San Diego, returned home recently as he brought his stand-up comedy show to Pechanga Arena on Thursday, April 18. He prepares for another on Saturday, April 20 in Sacramento at Golden 1 Center, part of his nationwide tour.

Standing or sitting, the hits keep on coming in more ways than one.

The following night, “Fluffy” is the new host of “WWE Rivals,” a round-table discussion/series of World Wrestling Entertainment’s greatest rivalries, taped for broadcast on A&E channel.

Season 4 of the weekly series drop kicks-off at 8 p.m. Sunday, April 21.

The dramatic rivalries that defined WWE continue to be explored in new episodes of “WWE Rivals.” Each one-hour episode will feature a round-table discussion of WWE Superstars including Champ Cody Rhodes, Natalya, Kevin Nash, and others led by actor, comedian and WWE superfan Gabriel “Fluffy” Iglesias, who will take viewers on a ride, exploring the battles between some of the most iconic Superstars in WWE history.

Perm: Lord of the Northern Urals

Located just on the European side of the Ural Mountains, the metropolis of Perm is both an industrial powerhouse and one of Russia’s cultural centers. The main part of the city extends for miles along the high east bank of the Kama River.

In summer 1909, the Russian photographer and chemist Sergei Prokudin-Gorsky made his first trip to Perm as part of his project to document the diversity of the Russian Empire in the early 20th century. Prokudin-Gorsky’s panoramas of Perm included detailed vistas of the riverfront. My first visit to the Perm region occurred nine decades late, in the summer of 1999. Return trips ln 2014 and 2017 revealed a city in the midst of a building boom.

A history entertwined with industry

The name “Perm” (apparently derived from Finno-Ugric words pera ma, meaning "distant land") is documented as early as the 12th-century chronicle “Tale of Bygone Years”. At that time "Perm" was variously used to include territory in the northern Urals that was nominally controlled by the economic power of Novgorod, whose hunters and traders reaped the bounty of its valuable furs.

The settlement of Perm, however, originated in the early 18th century as part of the quest by Peter the Great to exploit the vast ore deposits of the Ural Mountains. These raw materials provided secure sources of essential industrial-grade metals needed above all for the army.

As with other Urals towns such as Yekaterinburg , the guiding force in developing this area was Vasily Tatishchev (1686-1750), one of Russia's early professional historians. A scholar with a gift for practical activity, Tatishchev had boundless admiration for Peter the Great and was an influential proponent of the central role of autocrat and state in Russian history, of the view that Russians are a "state people."

During the 1720s, Tatishchev established settlements at mines, smelters, and metal-working plants throughout the Ural Mountains. In 1720, he chose the 17th-century village of Egoshikha, located near the small Egoshikha River, a tributary of the Kama. With nearby sources of copper ore, dense forests and ample water supplies, the site was considered ideal for a large smelter. The project was entrusted to Georg Wilhelm Henning (de Gennin; 1676-1750), a military engineer of German origins who worked closely with Tatishchev. 

Construction began on the main Egoshikha factory on May 4, 1723, which is considered the city’s founding date. The name “Perm” was officially adopted only in 1781 after a command by Catherine the Great that transformed the large factory settlement into an administrative center for the Urals.

Since its origins, Perm has been associated with heavy industry, and by the 1860s it became one of the most important arms producing areas in Russia. The cannon works at Motovilikha — a factory town founded in the 18th century near the copper​ plant at Egoshikha — became a key component in the Russian military-industrial complex. 

A transport hub

Because of its favorable location within the Volga River basin, Perm during the 19th century developed into a transportation center for salt and other minerals, ​as well as ​metal ore​ and the products of metal factories throughout the western Ural Mountains. In 1846, regular steamboat service appeared on the Kama.

In 1863, Perm was included in the main Siberian highway, and in 1878, construction was completed on the first phase of the Urals Railroad from Perm to Ekaterinburg, part of a railroad construction boom that culminated in the early 20th century with the completion of the TransSiberian Railway. Perm’s growth in the 19th century was reflected in Prokudin-Gorsky’s overviews of the central city, with its belching smokestacks.

Distinctive landmarks

Among the landmarks in his photographs is the Cathedral of the Transfiguration of the Savior, overlooking the Kama. The shrine was originally part of the Transfiguration Monastery, founded in 1560 by the Stroganovs for their settlement up the Kama River at Pyskor. In 1781, the monastery moved to Perm, recently elevated to the status of town and the seat of a diocese. Begun at the end of the 18th century, construction of the Perm cathedral lasted until 1819. Thereafter, work began on ​its majestic neoclassical bell tower, designed by Ivan Sviyazev and finished in 1832.

Much of Perm burned during a fire in 1842, but the town quickly recovered. During the half century before the First World War, rapid growth led to the construction of brick buildings in eclectic ornamental styles.

Despite sweeping changes in the century following Prokudin-Gorsky’s visit, many of the buildings captured in his photographs remain, Prominent among them are the Ascension-St. Feodosy Church (1903-10) and the Trinity Cathedral (1846-49).

One of the most distinctive landmarks in his panoramas is the towering minaret of Perm’s main mosque, endowed by local merchants and designed in a Moorish style by Aleksandr Ozhegov. Completed in 1903, its tall minaret soars above wooden houses and century-old brick buildings in what was once a Tatar district. The area is now overshadowed by a skyscraper apartment complex and by the nearby office tower of energy giant Lukoil.

Civil war prize

Like other industrial and railroad towns in the Urals, Perm was hotly contested during the Russian Civil War. For a few months, it appeared that Admiral Alexander Kolchak's White forces, which captured Perm on Christmas Eve in 1918, would prevail in their drive westward. Yet the energetic strategy of the Red commanders such as Mikhail Frunze and Vasily Bliukher drove Kolchak back from Perm and the Urals in what proved to be a disastrous retreat for White forces. In a further twist of fate, the victorious Red commander Bliukher fell victim to Stalin's purges in 1938. Perm during the Civil War is generally considered to be portrayed under the name “Yuriatin” in Boris Pasternak’s novel Doctor Zhivago .

 Despite extensive damage in the wake of the Civil War, Perm regained its industrial power in the 1930s. In March 1940 the city was renamed Molotov in honor of Vyacheslav Molotov (1890-1986), a member of Stalin’s inner circle. The name “Perm” was restored in October 1957 in the wake of Nikita Khrushchev’s campaign of de-Stalinization.          

With slightly over a million inhabitants, Perm belongs to a cluster of cities (Krasnoyarsk, Voronezh, Ufa) that falls just under Russia’s top 10. The city's economy rests on the viability of local industry, which includes not only metal working and engine production but also major oil refineries and chemical plants.

Prokudin-Gorsky’s photographs of Perm superbly convey the sense of this bustling industrial and transportation nexus.

In the early 20th century the Russian photographer Sergei Prokudin-Gorsky devised a complex process for color photography. Between 1903 and 1916 he traveled through the Russian Empire and took over 2,000 photographs with the process, which involved three exposures on a glass plate. In August 1918, he left Russia and ultimately resettled in France with a large part of his collection of glass negatives. After his death in Paris in 1944, his heirs sold the collection to the Library of Congress. In the early 21st century the Library digitized the Prokudin-Gorsky Collection and made it freely available to the global public. A number of Russian websites now have versions of the collection. In 1986 the architectural historian and photographer William Brumfield organized the first exhibit of Prokudin-Gorsky photographs at the Library of Congress. Over a period of work in Russia beginning in 1970, Brumfield has photographed most of the sites visited by Prokudin-Gorsky. This series of articles will juxtapose Prokudin-Gorsky’s views of architectural monuments with photographs taken by Brumfield decades later.
