So, is a cruise wedding right for you? We talked to Heather Marohl of Travel Pros in Virginia Beach, Virginia, Frank Armstrong of Cruise & Vacation Travel in Le Roy, Michigan, and Julie A. Miller of Unlimited Vacations & Cruises in Cuyahoga Falls, Ohio, to get all the details on cruise weddings.

What types of couples and weddings are cruise weddings best suited for?

According to our pros, cruise weddings can work for a variety of different couples and styles. However, it’s best for those who don’t mind  letting go of the details  and keeping things simple. “From the flowers to the music, cruise weddings tend to be simple and you likely won’t have many choices to pick from, if any,” says Heather. In terms of wedding size, cruise ship weddings tend to work for  smaller guest lists —but some cruises can accommodate larger party sizes. Cruise weddings also can be ideal for couples who  don’t want any guests at all , and who want to combine their wedding or elopement with a unique honeymoon experience.

What are the cost differences between a cruise ship wedding and an “on-land” destination wedding?

“The  traditional destination wedding  is more costly, but you get a lot more options, more security—you are not at the whim of the sea—and you can have more people,” says Heather. “Cruise weddings, first you have to pay for the cruise itself, and then the wedding package. Some companies offer à la carte options, which can add up quickly. You will also have to pay for license fees, which vary by cruise line, per package, per location if you’re getting married on shore.”

How do cruise weddings work? Do couples typically get married on the ship or at a port?

It’s up to you. Some couples choose to get married on the ship before it departs, while others get married on land at a destination port. “If friends and family cannot afford to take the cruise but can be at the wedding, then having it on ship prior to sailing would be the logical choice,” says Frank. “If friends and family can go on the cruise, then there is nothing like being married in a tropical garden or on the beach in a Caribbean island.”

Can you legally get married on a cruise ship?

You’ll have to  take note of legal requirements  when it comes to getting married on a cruise ship or on land. Some countries have residency requirements, meaning you have to reside on the island for a certain period of time in order to legally marry there—not possible if you’re just making a cruise stop. Of course, you could legally marry in your home country before your cruise and have a symbolic wedding at the port. When it comes to getting married on a cruise ship, you’ll need to follow the laws of the country where the ship is registered. So you can easily marry on certain cruise lines’ ships, while there are others where you can’t. Be sure to do your research, talk to a  travel agent who specializes in weddings , and apply for licenses far in advance.

How long of a cruise typically works best for a wedding.

If you’re planning on combining your wedding with a honeymoon, a five to seven-day cruise will likely be ideal. “If the wedding party can sail along with the couple, then the party continues for the entire cruise and that could also be a very memorable event for all,” says Frank.

Which wedding details will a cruise arrange? What is the couple responsible for?

If you’re getting married on the ship, the cruise will typically provide a  wedding coordinator  with their package. “Generally, the cruise line includes the flowers, music, photographer, and officiant (this could be the captain) in the packages, though some of these might cost extra,” says Heather. “The couple is responsible for, but not limited to, registering for their marriage license, their attire, and  the invitations .” If you’re getting married on land, you’ll be responsible for arranging all of the details—and it’s recommended to hire a planner at your wedding location to ensure that everything goes smoothly.

Are there any times of year that should be avoided when it comes to cruise weddings?

“This depends on the destination of your cruise,” says Heather. “The Caribbean’s hurricane season is from June 1 through November 30, so I would avoid booking during this time period as to not have to  deal with any unpredicted storms . The Greek Islands generally close for the off-season. Alaska cruises have a particular set of dates when they allow cruises.” Frank notes that holidays and the family vacation season (summer) can be quite  expensive and crowded  and might not be the best for a cruise wedding.

What are some popular cruise locations for weddings?

The Caribbean is most popular, but again, be aware of residency requirements before booking. St. Thomas, Puerto Rico, the Bahamas, Jamaica, and St. Lucia tend to be popular. But don’t limit yourself to warm-weather locations! Why not try Alaska? Says Heather: “How many people can say they got married on a glacier?” There are also U.S.-based cruises, such as ones that sail along the New England and Canadian coastlines during the fall. Or for something completely different, the famed Queen Mary 2 offers weddings as it sails across the Atlantic Ocean!

Many cruise lines and companies can accommodate weddings, including Princess Cruises , Disney Cruise Line , Carnival Cruise Line , Crystal Cruises , Celebrity Cruises , Norwegian Cruise Line , and Royal Caribbean , among others. These cruise lines offer a variety of routes and price points so it’s often best to work with a travel agent to find the exact cruise that best suits your desired event.

You might also want to bring a steamer on your trip to ensure that you can straighten out any attire that may become wrinkled in transport.

How do cruise weddings work?

A legal marriage can’t be recognized in open seas, which are not under the jurisdiction of any country, unless the ship captain or officiant is also a justice of the peace, minister, or notary public. That means that most legal cruise weddings take place either onboard the ship in port or harborside, docked in a destination. Many cruise ships do have chapels, but some offer more scenic options like a ceremony out on deck.

Each port has their own requirements to obtain a marriage license, which couples are responsible for handling. Documentation should be completed and submitted approximately two to three months prior to any legal ceremony at sea.

Same-sex marriages are a possibility in countries where they are recognized. Of course, any couple can also opt for a symbolic ceremony, meaning that there is still all the pomp and circumstance of a celebration, without it being legally binding.

Cruise wedding couples can choose to hold their ceremony in a homeport like Seattle or Miami before departure. This gives them the ability to choose their own clergy and invite day guests onboard for the afternoon before setting sail. Or they can choose a wedding in a port of call, like Mexico, either onboard the ship or at a venue like the beach of a resort.

Attending as a guest? It’s probably best to leave the giant gift box of fine China at home and opt for either a cash gift or utilize the couple’s registry to mail them their present ahead of time. Some cruise lines even offer their own registry and wedding websites. This allows the cruising couple to register for shipside gifts like spa treatments , excursions , and onboard spending money .

When to book a cruise wedding?

It’s important to decide if most of the wedding guests will only be along for the vows, or if friends and family are also cruising with you. If you extend the invitation for the latter, be sure to book your cruise wedding well in advance. You will need to secure a block of cabins with a group rate and ensure that guests have ample time to plan the vacation and request off work.

On the other hand, if guests are traveling just for the ceremony, be sure to advise them to fly in well before the day so they don’t miss the big event.

Cruise lines only allot a certain number of weddings to take place on any given week or sailing. So, if you have a very specific date in mind, it’s best to book as far in advance as possible . The downside to this is that during that long stretch of time, something could impact the sailing affecting dates, ports of call, and more. As with any cruise, all guests need to be flexible — even those exchanging nuptials.

One way to handle any potential tweaks to your cruise wedding is to provide as much logistical (time and place) information as possible on save the dates but refer to the voyage as “ Caribbean ” or an “ Alaskan adventure ,” rather than listing specific ships or ports. These wedding cruise packages vary in offerings from an intimate ceremony on the ship to an idyllic destination event and reception — but they do not include the cost of the cruise itself. In addition to standard marriage packages, many cruise lines also offer vow renewals and even romantic proposal packages.

Inclusions of wedding packages vary by cruise line and by tier. Packages typically employ the cruise line’s preferred vendors, so keep in mind that it might be difficult or impossible to handpick florists or photographers.

Expect cruise wedding inclusions along the lines of:

• Services of a wedding coordinator pre-cruise and onboard
• Ceremony officiated by ship captain
• Decorations
• Recorded music
• Wedding cake and sparkling wine toast

Should I get married onboard or in port?

The decision to officiate a cruise wedding onboard or in port is a personal decision, but there are a few logistical differences between the two options.

Only couples with a relatively small guest list are able to conduct their wedding onboard a cruise ship. Most lines restrict onboard wedding parties to 50 non-sailing guests maximum.

Sailing with more than 50 guests might be its own organizational challenge, but couples looking for a larger wedding at sea can opt to hold their ceremony at a land-based venue in one of their itinerary’s approved destinations.

Some neat options of cruise wedding venues include the shores of San Juan; a winery in Santorini; cruise line private islands like MSC’s Ocean Cay Marine Reserve; or atop a glacier in Juneau, Alaska. The nice part about a destination cruise wedding package is that many cruise lines include roundtrip transportation from the ship to the venue for the couple in the cost of the package.

Either a marriage in port or onboard can be legally binding, as long as the couple works with the cruise line to file the correct paperwork in advance.

What is the best cruise ship to get married on?

Because you’ll be embarking on your built-in honeymoon along with your wedding, be sure to choose a ship and itinerary that distinctly suits your style. A notable exception is popular cruise line Viking Cruises, which does not offer cruise weddings.

The ship that will serve as the setting for your wedding day should reflect you as a couple . In addition to the itinerary and the length, consider how you’ll want to spend your time aboard together. Are you looking for a ship that will cater to the whims of your entire wedding party or are you looking for an intimate escape that revolves around time by the pool or in the spa?

Using a travel advisor who specializes in cruise weddings could be helpful in selecting the right vessel for your preferences and perhaps most importantly, your budget . It’s also helpful to note that not every ship in a cruise line’s fleet accommodates legal marriage ceremonies.

How much do cruise weddings cost?

In terms of the packages, cruise weddings are a considerable value when it comes to how much is spent on the ceremony and reception in comparison to the average land-based wedding. However, an inherent part of a cruise wedding is the cruise, which can fluctuate in price depending if the betrothed are looking to splash out on a suite or opt for a more modest cabin.

As an example, Carnival ’s entry-level Signature Ceremony for up to eight guests is $1,799. Princess Cruises , known for being the “Love Boat,” offers a selection of wedding packages including a Timeless Wedding at Sea, also for up to eight guests, for $4,495. Most wedding packages are modifiable to add additional guests for a per-person fee.

Other popular cruise lines that offer a range of cruise wedding packages include Disney Cruise Line , Royal Caribbean , Norwegian Cruise Line, Holland America, Windstar Cruises, and more.

A simple Polynesian-style vow renewal ceremony on Paul Gauguin Cruises is just $290. But its weeklong Tahitian cruises typically start from about $10,000 per couple.

Weddings held during busy holiday seasons as well as popular times of the year (read: summer) might incur an additional fee.

What to wear for a cruise wedding?

While a cruise wedding is unlike your typical occasion, it still borrows from common wedding etiquette. The marrying couple sets the tone for their special day. It is up to them whether it is a fully formal event or if the theme is more beachy chic.

If you’re a guest, take your cue on what to wear from the invitation and when in doubt, ask. Just because it’s a destination wedding in Hawaii doesn’t automatically mean flip-flops and shorts are acceptable. 20 Things to know when planning a cruise ship wedding

Cruise ship weddings can be fun, simple, and affordable. Check out the things you should know before planning a cruise ship wedding!  Did you know that the average wedding in the United States cost over  $20,000?  I personally had my wedding on a cruise ship and I loved it! A cruise wedding can be as cheap as  $1500-$7000  depending on what you want and how many people will be attending. You can also add things and still have an amazing wedding on a budget.  A wedding on a cruise ship is a great way to save money, time, and is a very unique way to tie the knot!   I have created this cruise ship wedding guide for anyone looking for perspective and tips on tying the knot on board a cruise ship.  

1.) Reserve in advance  

With any wedding whether land or sea, reserve in advance because you may not be the only couple considering a certain wedding date. Also, you want to book your cruise vacation in advance to avoid it being sold out.  

2.)Your Wedding can be at a port or destination venue 

I had my wedding in Miami before the cruise set sail. You can choose to have your wedding on the ship in your home port before it sets sail or at another port like the Caribbean, Mexico, Hawaii etc. Keep in mind that you can not have your wedding while the cruise is actually sailing on the ocean because a legal marriage has to be within a country. Also, know that you can renew your vows on a cruise if you are already married!  

3.)Pick the right cruise for you  

For most ships they will require you to book your cruise vacation first before starting any wedding planning so keep this in mind. Also, every ship is different with different cruise lengths and things to offer so you will want to pick the cruise ship that matches your personality. I personally chose to have a wedding on Carnival cruise because it offered affordable wedding packages compared to other ships and I chose a 7 day cruise because it was not too long or too short. A 4 day cruise is also a great option.  

4.) Get the balcony suite  

You will be saving some major bucks on your wedding, so you will have some extra cash to get an ocean view suite with a balcony. I would highly recommend getting a balcony suite because it is more spacious and waking up to different views every morning will be very romantic.  

5) Bring marriage license  

You will need to get your marriage license prior to the wedding. After the wedding ceremony the newly married couple, their witnesses, and clergy will sign the marriage license. It will be up to the couple to file it with the courts after the wedding so that it will be legal.  

6) Non-cruising family members can attend wedding  

   Even if your family members will not be passengers on the ship, they can still be in attendance to your wedding when the ship is in port. When I had my wedding with Carnival cruise line I was able to get onto the ship with all of my family members and friends before the ship was to set sail from Miami, FL and have my wedding. Also, keep in mind there will be no other people on the boat besides you, your wedding guest, and the cruise staff at the time of your wedding because you will be given priority boarding and get on the ship earlier than others for your wedding.  

7.) Honeymoon will still be amazing even with cruising family members  

Speaking of family members, don't worry about your honeymoon being less romantic with family or friends cruising with you. The ships are so big and full of different activities that you are not likely to run into them. However, if you do want to hang out with them it can be very fun. 

8.) Let your guest know your plans ASAP  

When planning a cruise wedding you will want to let your guest know your plans as soon as possible, so that they can have time to prepare or take off from work. You can do this  BEFORE  sending out invitations by simply emailing, calling or texting your guest to give them a heads up of your plans.  

9.) Make a wedding website & registry  

When it comes to a cruise wedding there are a lot of little details that your guest will need to know and understand. On your wedding website or facebook page be sure to include hotel information, directions to the cruise port and where to meet for the wedding. You will also want to let them know that if they are a non-sailing wedding guest they will need to bring I.D and if they are a sailing guest to bring their passport.   Check out how I set up my wedding website  here .  

10.)Try to get group rates  

Try to book accommodations as a group so that your wedding guests and you can get better rates and save money on your cruise booking.  

11.) Wedding planners will assist you  

The great thing about having a wedding on a ship is that it will be a lot less stressful. The cruise wedding coordinators take care of everything, you just let them know what you want. Wedding packages offered on the ship also help to take a lot of the work out of the wedding planning. Packages will include cake, food, flowers, and entertainment..

12.) When or when not to have your wedding cruise...  

Avoid summer and spring breaks:  if you choose to have your wedding during these times you may be sharing your cruise vacation with college spring breakers and families on vacation with their kids However, do book your cruise during these time if it fits into your wedding plans and guest schedules.     Avoid holidays: keep in mind when planning your wedding and cruise vacation that it may be more money during holidays.     Consider the season & weather: of course you will want to try your best to avoid bad weather months. For example I avoided having my wedding during hurricane season in Florida  

13.)Come at least a day prior to wedding cruise  

If you do not happen to live conveniently near the cruise port and are driving or flying in for the wedding, do yourself the favor and stay in a hotel prior to your big day. This will save you from running around like a crazy person and from getting stressed out. It also gives you more time to spend with family and friends prior to your wedding as wedding cruises typically are shorter.  

  14.)Get reliable transportation  

  Be sure to get reliable transportation to the cruise ship for your big day and preferably get a hotel near the cruise port. You may want to consider getting a shuttle from your hotel for you and your wedding party.  

15.) Arriving to cruise port...  

  you will be met outside by a cruise coordinator in a designated area. They will escort you and your wedding party into the ship in order to get ready. For your wedding you and all your guest will have priority boarding and check in. I boarded the ship at 10:00 a.m with all of my wedding guest.  

16.) Getting ready for your wedding  

  Makeup:  On the boat they can do your wedding makeup for you or you can be sure that your makeup artist comes with you into your cabin along with your wedding party.     Hair:   I would recommend having most of your hair done prior to getting on the boat and leave any minor finishing touches for the boat in order to save time in getting ready for your big day.     Clothes: Dress for the occasion, yes it is a cruise wedding and can be laid back but I would recommend to still dress to impress.       Cabins:   Your cabin will be ready early for you and your wedding party to get ready in.   I would recommend that you request a second cabin be opened so that the groom and the bridal party can get ready in separate locations.  

17.)Wedding ceremony  

keep in mind that  the ceremony room you get will be based off of the number of guest that you have attending your wedding. During your big day your guest will be directed to the ceremony room by your wedding coordinator.  

18.)Wedding Reception  

I would recommend that during the reception you just try and mingle with your wedding guest, with the exception of some candid shots and the standard wedding cake cutting photo. The time you have is short and it is better to pick up the professional picture taking after the reception where you will be able to go around the boat and outside to take plenty of photos by the photographer.  

19.) Photos and videography  

You can not bring your own photographer. Also, be aware that with any wedding that the professional photos and videos may be expensive. I personally would recommend getting the professional photos and video of your wedding and try to get the photo package that is right for your budget.     See example wedding video:  here  

20.) Honeymoon  

Time to sit back, relax and enjoy your honeymoon! My honeymoon was spent in Belize, Mexico, Honduras and Grand Cayman on the ship Carnival Glory. We had a balcony suite and really enjoyed every part of our honeymoon cruise from ordering room service in our cabin to snorkeling in the crystal blue waters of Mexico and riding around on a scooter.

How to Plan a Cruise Wedding

Cruise weddings have become all the rage. Thanks to exotic locations ( hello, private beach in Bora Bora) , significantly cheaper costs, and the unmatched beauty of the sea, it’s no wonder brides and grooms are taking notice of this destination wedding option. Of course, there are some unique considerations when it comes to getting married at sea. Here, we’ll delve into all the do’s and don’t’s, so you don’t have to worry about any of the coulda, woulda, shoulda’s when planning your special day aboard a cruise ship or at port!

How to plan a cruise wedding

All-inclusive or diy.

Many cruise lines offer all-inclusive wedding packages, and one of the first big decisions you’ll make (after saying “I do”!) is whether to choose the package route or plan it yourself.

These packages typically include a wedding planner – a huge plus! Your cruise wedding planner will help ensure all the details are set, from the flowers to the more tedious elements, like proper paperwork, customs/port needs, and more. They know exactly how to plan your wedding, from securing the officiant and onboard location, to prepping decorations, bouquets and boutonnieres, ordering the wedding cake, and/or hiring a wedding photographer. As you might imagine, the all-inclusive option is extremely helpful in limiting the amount of stress and work on your end.

That said, many people dream about their wedding their entire lives. When the big day finally arrives, it’s not unusual to want to add your own personal touches, or heck, to control every little detail. You can certainly vow for the DIY option – even creating your own wedding at port, separate from the actual cruise.

There are likely to be more challenges if you do it yourself. But, if you don’t mind digging your heels in, there’s no reason you can’t pull it off! That said, going this route will require flexibility. Bad weather and missed ports are just a couple examples of how things can go awry when planning a cruise wedding on your own.

Either way, we strongly encourage you to at least connect with the event planner on your cruise. At the very least, they’ll be able to provide some tips and tricks to help you pull off your dream day!

Timeline for Planning Your Cruise Wedding

Whether your wedding is an intimate affair of just the bride and groom, or you plan to invite your entire contact list, there’s good reason to know when planning needs to take place.

Most cruise lines require either 30 or 60 days minimum in advance of booking your wedding package. That said, cruises have limited space and can book up quickly, depending on the season and destination. Many cruise lines make their rooms available up to a year and a half (even two years!) before voyage – meaning you and yours might miss out on your favorite pick if you delay.

Concerning guests, you’ll want to let them know about your plans ASAP . If you’re planning your wedding more than a year out, send along save the dates as soon as you know yours. This will allow adequate time for them to not only save money, but plan time-off from work, juggle family schedules, and more. If your engagement period is shorter, send along save the date cards via email or forgo the save the date’s and skip right to your wedding invitations. Either way, there’s no such thing as inviting guests too early!

To the bride(s) and/or groom(s), we recommend you start a wedding website as soon as you’ve decided on a cruise. Don’t worry if you don’t have all the details nailed down just yet. It’s more important to let potential guests know as far in advance as possible what you’re planning. As details come together, the wedding website will become a lifesaver. It’s an easy place to put important details like booking information, deposit deadlines, and other important travel plans. It’ll also save you the stress of continually relaying the same message to each guest.

But hey – got a sudden itch to marry your dreamboat at sea in the next couple of months? Most cruises will do everything they can do help you pull it off in time, especially if your party is small. The faster you’re trying to pull off a cruise wedding, the more attractive an all-inclusive package will be to your planning efforts!

Average Cost of a Cruise Wedding

When considering costs, cruise weddings tend to be way less expensive than land weddings. The average cruise wedding costs a cool $7,000. Keep in mind, that price tag also includes your honeymoon wrapped into a single package.

While a cruise wedding is a great option for the budget-conscious couple, they can be as elaborate as you’d like to make them. Beyond the actual wedding ceremony, you’ll have the option to splurge whenever the ship docks. Snorkeling, exploring port cities, or even renting a private bungalow for the night are all premium add-ons to your package. These luxury options aren’t necessary – but they’ll certainly add to the dreamy adventure!

Marriage Laws & Requirements

Getting married at sea can be a bit complicated, so it’s important to understand your options before booking your cruise, as they’ll vary depending on the cruise line.

Having a legal wedding at sea is somewhat difficult to pull off. Unfortunately, most boat captains can’t legally wed their passengers. For this reason, most ceremonies at sea are symbolic – meaning they’re not legally binding. The couple will need to take care of the legality of their marriage either before or after their cruise to make things official.

That said, many captains can legally marry you in a port destination. This is a bit easier to manage, as – legally speaking – they simply need to be approved by the country in which you’re docked. You will still need to make sure you have a marriage license in place for this to be official. If you decide to go this route, make sure to clear any requirements with your cruise line ahead of time so you’re not left with an unsavory surprise.

Also, don’t let the word “port” throw you off. This doesn’t necessarily mean you’ll be getting married on a literal dock. Depending on your cruise itinerary, your port venue may be a pristine, private beach, beautiful resort venue or other exotic location.

Another option is to get married in port before the ship ever sets sails. If you choose this route, you can invite family and friends to join you for the ceremony, even if they’re not going on the cruise with you.

Other Considerations

Etiquette for Paying for Travel Arrangements

When it comes to who’s responsible for which portions of the cruise cost, etiquette deems that the bride and groom is only responsible for their own lodgings, as well as anyone in their wedding party. Beyond that, it is customary for guests to cover their own costs and fees to attend the cruise. Of course, the bride and groom will cover the actual ceremony and reception.

Keep in mind, as the marital couple-to-be, you can work with your cruise line to snag a great group rate, saving everyone money. This is another reason to start planning early!

Traveling with Wedding Essentials

Naturally, traveling with your wedding gear will make any bride a bit nervous – the dress, the favors, the rings! A few tips to keep things as simple and calm as possible:

• If flying to your cruise terminal, do not check any essentials at baggage. This includes the dress! You’ll feel better knowing all your must-haves are safe and in sight!
• Invest in proper packing gear. For the dress, this includes a heavy-duty garment bag. If anything is fragile, go the extra mile and get bubble wrap, packing peanuts, etc. – whatever it takes for your wedding wares to arrive safe and in a single piece!
• Don’t pack any liquids near important wedding essentials. A busted shampoo bottle can quickly become a gooey nightmare.
• Bring receipts for any items going through customs, if you can manage it. This can help make things smoother and ensure you don’t experience any hold-ups at customs

Wedding Gifts

Many of your guests will want to give a gift, as is tradition. However, being on a cruise makes this a logistical nightmare!

Cue your wedding website. When you list your registry, be sure to add your address and a simple request that guests mail gifts directly to you, rather than bringing them along for the cruise. You don’t want to endure a cruise with a cabin stuffed with gifts (thoughtful as they may be!) Many folks purchase gifts online anyway, so simply shipping directly to you shouldn’t be too much of an issue for anyone.

Wedding Favors

Whether you’re traveling with 5 guests or 50, you’ll want to keep your wedding favors small and easy to transport. This will make things simpler on you – as if you didn’t have enough luggage to worry about! – but also on your guests, who will certainly be coming home with their bags full of souvenirs.

You might choose to gift smaller items, such as personalized luggage tags, pieces of jewelry or DIY keepsakes. On the other hand, you could gift outside the box – for example, treating your guests to free drinks on the cruise, a group experience at port or purchasing thoughtful souvenirs in bulk once on the island. If choosing the latter option, we recommend you coordinate with the retailer ahead of time and send along a member of the wedding party to pick them up while you enjoy your day!

What You Need to Know About Getting Married on a Cruise Ship

Getting married at sea sounds like a start to a fairytale, while having a destination wedding sounds like you’re off to a luxurious life. What if you could have both, without spending a ridiculous amount of money? This is where cruise ship weddings can save the day.

There are many benefits to getting married on a cruise ship, amidst some downsides to consider—but it is definitely something worth looking into. And if you think cruise ships are outdated, think again! Most cruise lines, especially post-COVID, have adjusted to modern times and modern couples. In other words, you can have a spectacular at-sea wedding that syncs with your style. And often, it can be far more luxurious than you can imagine while also costing a fraction of the price.

Before you book your tickets, it’s best to get acquainted with the most important details you need to know about getting married on a cruise ship, both good and bad.

The Abundance

…of choices! Let’s start on a positive note. Most cruise lines sail through multiple destinations, offering you quite a lot of potential spots not only for your ceremony, but for photos. You’ll have tons of stunning backdrops as you sail from one spot to the other.

Since many cruise lines now offer wedding packages that are basically all-inclusive or at least half of that, having a cruise ship wedding can actually save you a lot of money. There are packages that cost only a couple of thousand dollars for a guest list of up to 10 people that include champagne, dinner, cake, and even breakfast in bed. And almost all packages offer the service of a wedding planner at no extra charge. However, this accounts for accommodation for neither you nor your guests. But it’s safe to say this is definitely a better deal than any land-based venue you can find. Of course, this isn’t true in all cases. Cruise ship weddings, depending on the package, can get quite expensive at around $1,000 per guest. Hence, it’s best to do your own research.

Mixed Availability

As of the writing of this article in March 2022, one cruise ship line we looked into was fully booked (for weddings) for the rest of the year. This is surprising considering it’s not even spring! Other lines, however, were open and available, but this suggests that it’s best to book early if you have your heart set on a specific company or route.

In addition, several popular lines have advised reserving your wedding plans at least three months in advance, which shouldn’t be a problem unless you’re having a last-minute elopement.

Contrary to what you see in the movies, not all cruise captains can legitimize your wedding. First, not all captains are certified to legally officiate a wedding. Second, not all cruise ship weddings are legally binding. And this is where things can get complicated.

Assuming you want your ceremony to be legal and legitimate , if you’re getting married in international waters, you will need to get a marriage license from the country your cruise ship is registered in. (NOTE: Just because you depart from the United States, doesn’t mean the ship is registered in the United States.) And if you’re getting married while docked at a certain international location, you’ll need to get a license from there first. To make things even more complicated, not all countries allow same-sex marriages. Let’s just say that it’s best to inquire with any cruise ship company about your options before you book.

Alternatively, it might just be easier to seal the deal at the local city hall either before or after your wedding and have your cruise ship vows be simply for symbolic purposes.

Accommodating Guests

Following up on a point we mentioned earlier—guest accommodation is often not included in the wedding package. However, this doesn’t mean they need accommodation. Many cruise lines are quite flexible and will allow you to have friends and family over while you’re docked (as long as they don’t stay past curfew).

Limited Vendors

Going back to negative points, it’s important to acknowledge that your vendor choices will be limited on the cruise. Sure, you can probably hire your own photographer, but catering-wise? You don’t really have an option. (This isn’t necessarily a negative, as cruise ships generally hire highly professional chefs that will cater to every and all preferences.) Again, it’s always smart to check in with the cruise lines about which vendors are your responsibility and which are theirs.

Bad Weather

As a final note, you should account for the possibility of bad weather if you’re at sea. Unfortunately, cruise ships may not be able to dock at a certain location if the water’s rough, so you may have to prepare a plan B. And if you were counting on a legal marriage, the worst-case scenario is that you can always have your wedding be symbolic and officiate it once you get back home.

Cruise weddings are a perfect idea for a variety of different couples and styles. But, it is considered best for the couples who don’t go deep into details and looking for a low-key ceremony. Congratulations on your engagement fellow cruise ship lover! Either that, or you are a first time cruiser who is entertaining the idea that getting married on a cruise ship for a destination wedding would be absolutely fabulous.

Sailing the high seas, a warm tropical wind in your face and the vibrant beat of the DJ playing tunes on deck, whilst you sip a cold beverage and snuggle up to your new spouse in a comfy wicker pod chair — sign me up!!

If that sounds like your little slice of paradise, but you aren’t quite sure where to start, not to worry. We’re here to help you sort out a few planning issues in this article.

Step 1: Choose a wedding location & number of guests

There are a number of different locations you can choose for your cruise wedding, each of which gives you a unique experience, and will influence the final price.  In general, you will choose a location that is:

• Port of call
• At the port of departure

Question: How many people do you want onboard sailing with you?

Answer #1: Just for Two – An intimate cruise elopement would keep prices down and ensure a relaxed vibe. Do what you want when you want, without the pressures of appeasing or entertaining guests. You can also opt for a cruise send-off wedding, held at the departure port of the cruise. This option combines the intimacy and reduced price of the previous option while also involving more family and friends.

Answer #2: A Family Affair – Taking your family and friends along with you on the cruise is possible. You can choose to say your vows at a chosen port on the ship’s itinerary. This way, everyone gets to enjoy a destination style wedding, while the happy couple gets to enjoy the intimacy of their cruise without interruptions.

Step 2: Choose the destination / length of travel

The destination and length of your cruise are two critical components of planning a cruise wedding. Start by thinking about the style of wedding you want. If you imagine an intimate cruise for two, your length of travel is only limited by your budget.

Typically, cruises can be categorized into the following lengths of time:

• 3 – 6 nights
• 8 – 13 nights

Getting married on the cruise ship with the whole family or at an established port? You may want to limit your cruise to only 5 or 6 days. That way everyone can take the necessary time off work to travel and cruise with you.

Combine your travel season with your cruise length and you should find a few different options that work for you.

Step 3: Choose your date

When choosing a date for your destination cruise wedding, consider booking in the shoulder season just before or after peak season. The weather will likely be as nice as the high season, and your tickets may be less expensive. If traveling with a group, you will also have a better shot at getting the perfect cabin configuration for your group.

Picking a date for your destination cruise can be quite the chore. It is difficult to pick that perfect calendar date so that the people you invite are able to take time off work, schedule what to do with the kids, set aside a budget, and generally go on a vacation.

Do your research and ask lots of questions. Don’t be afraid to reach out directly to the cruise ship companies and dig into the specific wedding packages.

Also, try browsing a website like Cruise Critic . They have additional guides and reviews of both cruise lines as well as individual ships. What’s also great is the message board forum they host on their website, where real couples and fellow cruisers interact by posting questions and answers. It is an invaluable source of on-the-ship information and tidbits that you may not find anywhere else.

Step 5: Book The Cruise

We’re currently working on a complete guide to booking your wedding cruise. In the mean time, we will say that our past experiences booking a cruise vacation using online platforms have been easy and hassle free.

Several options exist for booking your cruise:

• Direct booking option on a cruise line website
• Use an online travel booking platform like CruiseDirect, Travelocity, or Expedia
• Calling the cruise line’s reservation center
• Use a travel agent (yes, they still exist!)

Type the search term “book a cruise online” and you’ll find CruiseDirect near the top of the search results. As a leading online cruise travel company, they’re dedicated to providing their customers with access to great deals on cruise vacations.

We love the variety of cruise companies they have on offer as well as their reputation as a highly rated cruise company.

2. VacationsToGo

We’ve used this company several times to book cruises including our mini-moon cruise after our wedding. Their warm and friendly customer service agents have never let us down.

We love keeping track of last minute discounts by using the 90-Day Ticker feature. While we don’t often avail of the deep discount prices (up to 80%+ off!!!), it is fun to browse and dream about sailing the open seas again.

3. Travelocity

One of the most trusted names in online travel booking, we’ve used Travelocity to book hotels and car rentals in the past with great success.

The selection of cruise packages includes well known brands like Celebrity Cruises, Holland America, and Princess Cruises.

Tip: Save money by booking as a group

There are benefits to booking your cruise as a group. Cruise lines offer various savings and deals for groups, especially if traveling for a wedding. Deals can include a free stateroom for the bride and groom, an onboard private reception area, dinner seating arrangements that seat your group together, free cocktails, and other welcome gifts for your wedding party.

Step 6: Send Save the Date Cards

Expect that some people won’t be thrilled with the idea of a destination wedding for a number of reasons. And that’s okay! If it’s what you want then go for it.  Just know that it is an expense that some may not be able to afford, or  simply don’t enjoy cruising. You may receive less save-the-date cards back than you expected.

Whether you send cards out yourself or use an all-inclusive service, the main thing to keep in mind is that you want to have the people who matter most beside you on your big day.

Making a wedding website is a fun and simple activity nowadays, thanks to the modern necessity of being online. Look for a service that lets you drag and drop elements you want into your site, at whatever budget rate you have. These range from free DIY versions to more expensive options that set up the perfect site for you.

Step 8: Selecting a photographer

Photographers are skilled professionals that make your wedding the event you’ll remember the rest of your life. The ship package you choose may provide you with a skilled wedding photographer who already knows all the best photo spots around the ship or at your chosen venue.

If you are looking to save money, more modern options of sharing a wedding hashtag, curating group videos via social media, or letting a friend or family member be the designated documentary specialist are all budget friendly.

Step 9: Set up a wedding registry

Many cruise ships offer a registry service as part of a wedding package. Ask ahead if that interests you. This allows gifts to be added on board or even let guests pay for the couple’s amenities on board.

Most major cruise lines offer a variety of services to help you plan your wedding, and options range from onboard wedding ceremonies to weddings before you embark, on top of a glacier or on a sandy beach. Even better? Cruise ship weddings come with a built-in honeymoon.

But before you start planning, let's start with the basics: What does a cruise ship wedding cost? They start around $1,500 (plus the cruise costs) for Carnival’s Intimate Gold wedding package. From there, prices climb depending on the line you choose and what you add on to your ceremony.

Read on for Cruise Critic's 10 favorite cruise lines for weddings. They offer a variety of options and price points for most travelers planning a cruise wedding.

1. Disney Cruise Line

Why Choose Disney for a Cruise Wedding?

A Disney Cruise wedding is perhaps the ultimate fantasy-made-reality ceremony, depending on your tastes (of course). It's also a great option for anyone whose wedding party includes children as well as those entering blended marriages with young kids. Disney's ships are already some of the most well-liked in the world, with large rooms and plenty of on-brand entertainment. Additionally, Disney offers a low-stress, low-hassle package that -- while not cheap -- certainly delivers on bringing fairytales to life.

Disney Cruise Wedding Package Details:

Disney Cruise's Fairy Tale Weddings are available on all of the line’s ships. Packages start at $3,500 and include fresh floral options for the couple, the services of a Disney cruise wedding coordinator and officiant, a solo musician (typically a pianist), Champagne toast, an elegant wedding cake with keepsake topper, a commemorative Disney wedding certificate, onboard credit for the wedding couple and dinner at Palo, the line's adults-only alternative restaurant, found on all Disney ships. The package can accommodate eight guests, plus the couple.

Disney Cruise Wedding Caveat:

DIsney's wedding package can be pricey when you start adding upgrades. Beyond the cake and Champagne, a reception or other services for wedding guests isn't included, though you can add an appetizer-and-open-bar reception for an additional cost. You can also invite additional guests to your wedding ceremony, but events with more than 10 guests will also incur an extra cost.

Note that, if the couple gets married onboard, the captain or a ship officer will preside over the ceremony. Disney Cruise Line weddings do not include the marriage license, so the couple is responsible for providing any necessary legal documentation. If the wedding occurs on Castaway Cay, the ceremony will be performed by a Bahamian official, but it is not a legal marriage; the couple will need to already be legally married before the ship departs the U.S.

Couples should book their wedding packages in advance to allow time for the processing of marriage licenses and legal documents; for legal ceremonies at sea, all documentation should be completed and submitted about 10 weeks prior to sailing.

Coolest Perk of a Princess Cruise Wedding:

Not only can your ceremony be conducted at sea by your Princess ship's captain, but the line also features state-of-the-art technology that allows you to broadcast the ceremony live, via webcam, to friends and family on land. Some Princess captains are pretty romantic. On one particular cruise over Valentine's Day, the captain casually announced he'd conduct vow renewals for anyone who wanted them, and about a half-dozen couples showed up.

Princess Cruise Wedding Caveat:

Keep in mind that licensing fees for a Princess cruise wedding can add up to an additional $500 to any selected wedding package. There may also be surcharges for weddings held during busy peak season or holiday travel periods.

5. Norwegian Cruise Line Weddings

Why Choose a Norwegian Wedding at Sea?

Norwegian Cruise (NCL) weddings come in a vast array of options, which can turn basic packages into full-blown extravaganzas. Its ships also feature a wide range of specialty restaurants for easy romantic dining for two. NCL also offers legal same-sex ceremonies, available in destinations where same-sex marriages are recognized by local law.

NCL Wedding Package Details:

Norwegian offers four wedding packages that start at around $2,000. Its Wedding at Sea ceremony, priced from $3,099, is performed onboard while at sea and officiated by the ship captain on Breakaway , Getaway , Epic , Escape and Bliss . This package includes flowers for the couple; a cake; recorded music; Champagne toast; one bottle each of sparkling wine, house wine and prosecco; chocolate-covered strawberries; canapes delivered to the stateroom; one hour of photography service (prints are extra); and dinner for two in Norwegian's fine-dining French restaurant, Le Bistro. Norwegian's Wedding at Sea package also includes a group service coordinator, who can make dinner reservations, organize group seating at shows and otherwise assist the couple and their guests, in addition to overseeing the wedding. Marriage certificates will be issued by the Bahamas (additional fee).

The most basic (and cheapest) package is Norwegian's Symbolic at Sea option, while a Harborside package allows couples to be married onboard at select ports of call. Packages are available in a wide range of ports in the U.S. (including Alaska and Hawaii), Canada, Mexico, Europe, the Caribbean and Bermuda. This package adds priority embarkation for the couple and their guests (if the wedding is on embarkation day).

Destination weddings through NCL vary in price according to port, but start at $3,495, and offer a range of exotic onshore locations to hold nuptials: a glacier in Alaska, a bay in St. Thomas, the sands of Bermuda and more. It adds round trip transportation for the bride and groom to the wedding location in port.

Marriage licenses are extra in all cases, and prices vary depending on local authorities.

In addition to the basic packages, there is a huge range of a la carte options, including spa and beauty services (not available on embarkation day), flowers (including custom orders), live music and a wide variety of wedding receptions -- from cold hors d'oeuvres with an open bar to a full sit-down luncheon for a minimum of 25 guests.

Coolest Perk of a Norwegian Cruise Wedding:

Couples getting married on a Norwegian cruise can add a conch shell aisle or fresh rose arch to shoreside ceremonies for extra charges.

Norwegian Cruise Wedding Caveat:

If you're holding anything more than an intimate wedding on a Norwegian cruise, you'll be charged an extra fee for an additional wedding coordinator for every 25 guests beyond the first 25.

6. Royal Caribbean Cruise Weddings

Why Choose Royal Caribbean for a Cruise Wedding?

Among the choices for Royal Caribbean wedding packages, you have an option to get married at sea, with your ship's captain or first officer officiating a ceremony that includes special nautical vows. There are three packages to choose from, including a small-scale ceremony option, though prices for the larger packages are on par with Disney Cruise Line. Also like Disney, a reception is not included in Royal Caribbean's wedding package prices.

Royal Caribbean weddings are great for multi-generational weddings, where kids, teens, adults and mature guests will all be attending. There is always a huge range of entertainment, dining, drinking and relaxing options on board even the smallest Royal Caribbean ship, making it easy to keep guests happy before and after the wedding itself.

Royal Caribbean Wedding Package Details:

The line offers three different ways to tie the knot on board. The most basic and intimate wedding option with Royal Caribbean is the Intimately Yours package, which allows the couple to get married onboard while the ship is sailing, with up to 10 guests. The package, starting at $1,950, features the services of a wedding planner and coordinator, onboard ceremony with a nondenominational officiant, a photographer (prints are extra), recorded music, a three-tier wedding cake, dinner for two at a specialty restaurant, chocolate-covered strawberries and a mimosa-accompanied breakfast-in-bed for the couple in their decorated stateroom, a bottle of Champagne and a keepsake wedding certificate

A Vows at Sea package starts at $3,850 includes up to 50 guests and use of a private onboard wedding venue while the ship is at sea. The Embark on Romance option, from $5,600, lets the couple get married onboard the ship while it's in port on embarkation day, allowing non-sailing guests to participate in the ceremony before the ship departs. This package includes the same services above and covers up to 50 people, but adds priority check-in and a pier-to-ship escort for the couple and their guests. Note that there is a $250 surcharge for every additional 25 guests as well as other related charges (see our caveat below).

There is also one wedding package available to get hitched ashore: the "Destination I Do" offering, starting at $4,650 (for up to 50 guests). Couples can choose from a destination in port (or opt to stay on the ship while it's docked there) in locations like Antigua, Bermuda and Florida; or at the line’s private island retreat -- appropriately named for a wedding venue -- Perfect Day at CocoCay. This Royal Caribbean wedding package includes local transportation for the bride and groom, a bouquet and boutonniere, and a cake for two. The services of an officiant, wedding planner and coordinator, a bottle of sparkling wine and keepsake wedding certificate are also included.

Note that the cost for in-port marriage licenses vary by destination, from $200 to $700; a shipboard marriage license costs $900. Additional services for floral arrangements, live music and photography can be arranged at an additional cost.

Receptions are not included in the price of the ceremonies, but several add-on options are available, ranging from open bars and hors d'oeuvre to sit-down lunch and buffet meal service.

Coolest Perk of a Royal Caribbean Wedding:

Royal Caribbean's shoreside ceremonies run the gamut from simply scenic (a beach in San Juan, Puerto Rico ) and bespoke (a winery in Santorini, Greece ) to bucket-list affairs (like a ceremony atop a glacier in Juneau, Alaska ).

Royal Caribbean Wedding Caveat:

Watch out for a la carte charges that can add up on Royal Caribbean. For instance, couples who want to plan a wedding less than 90 days from sailing pay a fee that varies based on the package chosen. Note, too, that wedding parties of more than 50 guests require an additional wedding coordinator for an additional fee. Beyond that, an additional surcharge applies to weddings and vow renewals scheduled in May, June, September and October. Holidays -- such as New Year's Day, Valentine's Day, Easter, Memorial Day, Independence Day, Labor Day, Thanksgiving, Christmas and New Year's Eve -- are also subject to higher rates.

7. P&O Cruise Weddings

Why Choose a P&O Cruise Wedding?

Planning a wedding on P&O Cruises means first selecting the right ship for your needs. Not all of P&O's ships cater to the same clientele and some don't allow children (which can be a plus for some couples). With that in mind, it's important to know your guest list (or at least the age restrictions of your wedding) before you book. Aurora and Arcadia are child-free (nobody younger than 18 is allowed onboard), while Azura , Brittania , and Ventura allow children.

P&O Cruise Wedding Package Details:

Wedding packages start around $2,100 for a ceremony without guests and go higher for up to 10 guests. The cost includes the venue, ceremony conducted by the ship's captain (a civil service legally recognized under Bermudian law), floral arrangements, music, a tiered cake, a commemorative certificate, Champagne, an onboard wedding coordinator, and breakfast in bed.

Coolest Perk of P&O Cruise Weddings:

Pressing of the couple’s attire and complementary hair and makeup for the bride are a nice addition to both packages on P&O cruises.

P&O Cruise Wedding Caveat:

A hefty marriage license fee is required for couples marrying onboard Azure, Ventura, Arcadia and Aurora. Additionally, the per-person costs of a wedding aboard P&O cruises is a bit steep compared to other entries on this list.

8. Holland America Line Cruise Weddings

Why Choose a Holland America Cruise Wedding?

Holland America (HAL) weddings are available on a variety of ships and itineraries worldwide. Packages include extra amenities when a minimum number of staterooms are booked for guests and you'll find cool in-port wedding offerings, including glacier ceremonies in Juneau. The line caters to a mature clientele, making it attractive to older couples looking to wed. Almost all of Holland America's ships have dedicated chapels.

Holland America Wedding Package Details:

Weddings start at $1,800 for HAL's onboard At Sea Symbolic ceremony with up to eight guests on all sailings. That price includes an onsite wedding coordinator, a ship officer to perform the ceremony, flowers for the couple, a bottle of sparkling wine, a small wedding cake, a commemorative photo album, recorded music and a keepsake wedding certificate.

The line also has two additional wedding packages with increasingly stepped-up amenities for either legal or symbolic ceremonies at select ports in North America, the Caribbean, Europe, Australia and New Zealand. Holland America offers special wedding extras when at least eight staterooms are booked for an At Sea Symbolic or Anchors Away Harborside wedding through its Group Advantage Program. The line's at-sea wedding package is one of the pricier base rates on this list, starting at $3,300. It includes a choice of ceremony venue, a ceremony officiated by the captain, priority check-in (and disembarkation for the bridal couple), an onboard wedding coordinator, two floral arrangements for the ceremony, traditional wedding music (recorded, although live music such as a pianist, harpist or string quartet is available for a fee), commemorative wedding certificate, a bottle of Champagne, couple’s breakfast in bed, and dinner for two in the ship’s steakhouse.

Reception packages for lunch or dinner service can be arranged at onboard dining venues like The Verandah, Todd English or Britannia, depending on the ship. There are additional possibilities for canapes and cocktail receptions, too.

Coolest Perk of a Cunard Cruise Wedding:

Wedding packages on Cunard include some above-and-beyond extras, like a White Star Bellman to escort the bride to the ceremonial room and pressing service for bridal outfits.

Cunard Cruise Wedding Caveat:

Weddings can only take place on sea days and on cruises lasting at least seven nights. There are only two time slots available for ceremonies daily (late morning and mid-afternoon). Wedding parties with more than 20 guests are limited to the morning slot. Additional cake, flowers and photography services are available for a fee. The marriage license is not included and the fee is one of the highest out there.

How to Plan Your Carnival Cruise Wedding

After putting their onboard wedding program on hiatus thanks to the industry-wide shutdown, Carnival Cruise Line is finally making it possible for guests to have their dream at-sea ceremony once again.

“Creating special moments for our guests is what we do; it’s who we are, and the time to help them live out the weddings of their dreams is back,” says Jeremy Schiller, vice president of operations for the line.

Beginning this September, passengers will once again be able to work with the cruise line to create their dream wedding or vow renewal ceremony.

There are a wide variety of options available. Want to invite guests who aren’t actually going to be joining you on the cruise?

Carnival can arrange for an embarkation-day ceremony, which is one of the rare circumstances where up to 50 of your guests who aren’t sailing can board the ship for the celebration and then disembark before the ship leaves port.

Carnival’s wedding planners can also help guests who want to exchange vows in a specific port, although this isn’t necessarily possible in all destinations.

What Does A Carnival Cruise Wedding Cost

Carnival offers a wide variety of packages, the cost of which varies depending (as you might expect) on the number of guests and what type of ceremony the couple is hoping for.

Pricing for Carnival’s Intimate Ceremony (for up to 10 guests, including the lucky couple) begins at $1,799. The Carnival Classic package — for a minimum of 20 guests, including the couple — begins at $2,899. The Classic Diamond package, including a 90-minute couples massage, starts at $3,499.

Reception-wise, couples can choose from a variety of hot and cold appetizers… and even have a specialty cocktail named in their honor! While packages include pre-recorded music for the ceremony, arrangements can be made for live music or a DJ.

It’s important to note that weddings must be paid for at the time of booking, and packages include a non-refundable deposit. Weddings must be booked at least 60 days before the sail date, and the cost of the cruise is not included in the package.

How accurate are exit polls and are they ever wrong?

The release of the exit poll is one of the defining moments of every general election.

Broadcast when polling stations close at 10pm, it offers a considerably more reliable prediction of the final result of the vote than the surveys released in the weeks before.

Peculiarities about the UK electoral system make it extremely difficult to predict the outcome.

But the British exit poll is widely regarded as one of the best of its kind in the world, and helped turn its co-creator, Professor John Curtice, into a leading expert on voting behaviour.

Here’s how it’s put together, and how accurate its results have been in the past.

How do exit polls work?

The model used today was created in 2005 by Prof Curtice and statistician David Firth.

All exit polls work in fundamentally the same way: voters are asked which candidate they went for as they leave their polling station.

But with limited time and resources, organisers can’t ask every single person in every single station – far from it.

Pollsters from Ipsos talk to around 20,000 people across 130 polling stations – a drop in the ocean compared to the millions who turn out to the 40,000 stations across the UK.

Voters are selected at random throughout the day and asked to ‘vote’ again on a mock ballot paper which is placed into the exit poll. (Around 80% agree, in case you were curious.)

At regular intervals throughout the day, interviewers talk send their results so far back to Ipsos’ HQ.

But the work doesn’t stop there. Layers of statistical wizardry are then used to turn the small sample of results into something that accurately represents the entire country.

This is crucial because voting behaviour varies between different types of polling stations and parts of the country.

Voters can also refuse to vote, vote by post, or vote in person but refuse the survey, potentially skewing the result.

Experts say one of the main ways this is accounted for is the careful study of how voting behaviour changes from election to election.

For this reason, the polls are pretty much always carried out in the same places.

How accurate are they?

Experts say it isn’t technically possible to describe the accuracy of the exit poll, which is usually measured as a ‘margin of error’, because it isn’t based entirely on random sampling.

But the projection is usually extremely close – usually off by only a few seats.

For example, in 2010, it correctly predicted the exact number of seats won by the Tories.

Indeed, since 2005 it has called the majority exactly right three times.

In two cases, it was less than ten seats off from the final result.

The exit poll’s largest miss was in 2015, when the projected majority fell short of the actual number of seats by 30.

In fact, it’s so accurate that David Dimbleby – arguably the face of election night – has called it the ‘bane of the broadcaster’s life’.

He told The Guardian earlier this month the exit poll is ‘the worst invention ever’ because it takes the fun out of his job.

‘It’s like a thriller and you’re given the answer before we’ve even started on page one,’ he added.

15 cruise ship rules you shouldn’t break

Are you a rule follower or do you like to cross the line when it suits you? Some travelers are good at doing what they're told, while others see vacation as the time to live it up how they see fit, regardless of any official policies. On a cruise ship, rules are plentiful – spanning from what you can bring on board to how and where you can enjoy yourself. Some rules will feel constraining, and you'll be tempted to break them.

Please don't. Most cruise ship rules were created with your health and safety in mind. Flouting them could put you and your shipmates in danger or ruin your cruise with steep fines and possibly a forced debarkation.

If you're tempted to be a little naughty, first familiarize yourself with the ramifications of your actions. Here are 15 cruise ship rules you shouldn't break — and what might happen if you do.

No smoking indoors or on balconies

The rules are strict when it comes to smoking on cruise ships . Cruise lines ban cigarette use in most indoor areas, as well as on cabin balconies and public outer decks. You can smoke only in designated spaces, usually one or two spots on the top decks or exterior promenade and perhaps one side of the casino or a cigar bar.

Why? Lighters and cigarette ash are fire hazards, and deadly cruise ship fires have been started by wayward sparks from cigarettes. No cruise line wants to take that risk. Get caught breaking this cruise ship rule, and you'll be fined $250 or more, with the possibility of debarkation.

No underage drinking

The drinking age on cruise ships is either 18 or 21, depending on the line and sailing region. With so much cruise ship entertainment centered on drinking, it's tempting to slip your responsible teen a fruity daiquiri or a cool beer. Enterprising minors have also been known to find ways to access alcohol while their parents aren't paying attention.

You might not think a drink or two is harmful, but drunk teenagers could fall victim to sexual predators or engage in reckless behavior that could lead to them falling and hurting themselves — or falling overboard . Even if the drinking itself doesn't have a bad outcome, underage drinkers or adults who provide alcohol to minors can find themselves thrown off the ship at the next port of call if caught.

No sneaking drugs or alcohol on board

Whether you're underage or not, on the big-ship cruise lines, you're also not allowed to bring liquor, beer or drugs on board; policies on wine and Champagne vary. Contraband booze will be confiscated if discovered, and you might not get it back.

Bring illegal drugs on board, and you risk fines, disembarkation and jail time. You're not allowed to bring marijuana on a cruise , even if it's legal in your departure port or port of call. In those cases, you can enjoy some recreational use on land, but don't try to bring pot or edibles back as a souvenir.

You must attend the safety drill

Avid cruisers roll their eyes when asked to attend yet another safety drill, often called a muster drill . On the first day of every cruise you take, you must attend a safety briefing in person or via video, before reporting to your muster station — the place where you would gather in case of an emergency. The drills sometimes interrupt the flow of the first-day cruise fun, and everyone grumbles about going.

Do not think you can hide in your cabin and avoid the chore. Public areas on some ships close down, and staff members check cabins during in-person musters. Those who don't attend will be forced to attend a makeup drill — or forced to get off the ship in the next port of call.

Report your symptoms on the health form

Before you board any cruise ship, the pier-side staff will hand you a health questionnaire, asking if you've experienced any symptoms in the past few days or if you've been exposed to COVID-19. You can lie about your scratchy throat or upset stomach, and likely nothing will happen to you.

However, you could be responsible for getting someone else sick — perhaps someone whose immune system isn't as robust as yours and whose vacation will be derailed by a few days spent sick in bed. An outbreak of norovirus or COVID-19 on board might mean that certain venues are shuttered or activities curtailed for the entire ship. No one wants that.

Return by all-aboard time

Are you always running late? Do you view deadlines as suggestions? You'll need to change your mindset on a cruise.

The captain is serious when setting the all-aboard time, which is when everyone needs to be on board before the ship departs. After that time, the crew starts to pull in gangways and prepare the ship to leave. Occasionally, the captain will hold the ship for a few wayward passengers, but more often than not, latecomers race down the pier to find the ship sailing away without them .

No guests in crew areas

Binge-watch old episodes of "The Love Boat," and you might come on your cruise vacation hoping for a shipboard romance. On a modern cruise, don't expect a tryst with the cute bartender, smart officer or gorgeous lounge singer. Crew members are not allowed to fraternize with guests or invite them into crew quarters.

An illicit affair with a crew member might not leave you with more than a broken heart, but the crew member could lose their job for breaking this serious cruise ship rule.

No diapered kids in the pools

When the sun is blazing in the Caribbean, everyone wants to cool off in the cruise ship pools. But read the sign: Your diapered baby or toddler is not allowed.

Why? One diaper containment failure and that pool or hot tub must be closed down, drained and disinfected, taking it out of use for several hours, if not a full day. Instead, if you're traveling with a little one, look for ships with designated splash areas for kids in diapers, or bring an inflatable bathtub for bathroom-based water play.

No reserving lounge chairs

Want to incur the wrath of your shipmates? Show up at the pool deck early, reserve a few lounge chairs with your book or flip-flops, and don't return until after lunch.

It's against the rules to claim loungers if you're not using them , as it prevents other guests from accessing them. Unless you believe in karma, the worst that will happen to you from breaking this rule is that ship staff might remove your items if left too long. However, you will get nasty looks from your onboard neighbors.

No climbing on railings

Do not climb your balcony rungs like a ladder and perch atop the railing. Do not lean out open windows looking for the best photo opp. Do not play Jack and Rose from "Titanic." Do not try to cross from your balcony to the one next door by swinging over the side of the ship. All of these actions are against the rules because they put you at risk of falling over the side. It's not worth it.

No rowdy behavior

Cruise lines have codes of behavior in the contract each passenger signs when booking a cruise. Start a bar fight, harass the people next to you on the pool deck or assault a crew member, and you could find yourself thrown in the brig (i.e., cruise ship jail) . You could also be fined, disembarked from the ship or banned from the cruise line. It's better to mind your manners.

No taking food off the ship

Some ports of call have regulations preventing the transport of food (usually produce and meat, not sealed, pre-packaged foods) off the ship and onto their shores. This is usually to prevent harmful insects and diseases from spreading. Some ports employ food-sniffing dogs, and workers will confiscate the sandwich you made for lunch or the apple you brought for a snack. You might also be subject to a fine.

No open flames or fire hazards

Remember the no smoking on cruise ships rule? The prohibition also applies to other fire hazards. You cannot light candles on a cruise ship (even for religious holidays) or bring electronics with heating elements, such as tea kettles, coffee makers or certain hairstyling appliances. Explosives and fireworks also aren't allowed. Even power strips with surge protectors are no-nos. Bring banned items aboard , and they will likely be confiscated for the duration of your cruise.

Tech-savvy photographers are all about drones these days, and anyone with a love of electronic gadgets has hopped aboard the craze, flying them on beaches or in parks. You can see how drones would take excellent cruise ship footage, but you'll need to curb your enthusiasm.

Most cruise ships have rules banning drones from coming aboard, or if they're allowed, they can only be used off the ship in port, in compliance with local regulations. Try to sneak a flight from your balcony, and your drone will be confiscated.

Cruise lines are clear that they do not want any weapons on board. That includes firearms, pellet guns, tasers, knives, open razors and ammunition. Your dive knife and large scrapbooking shears are allowed on board, but ship security will hold them, and you can check the items out at select times. Any dangerous items discovered on board will be confiscated and disposed of, and you won't receive any compensation.

What is the job of a cruise director? Meet Marques Matthias.

If a cruise vacation was a movie, Marques Matthias would be the narrator.

As a cruise director for Carnival Cruise Line, Matthias' voice guides guests through their days onboard, outlining the ship’s scheduled activities and giving instructions over the vessel’s speakers, or emceeing events.

“Being able to (take) a cruise and realize that people get paid to have that vacation life, I was like, ‘That's something I want to be a part of,’” said Matthias, who goes by MarQ Anthony on the voyages.

The 36-year-old Minnesotan, who has worked for the line since 2015, is cruise director of the line’s newest ship, Carnival Venezia . He spoke to USA TODAY about what it's like to work on a cruise ship, launching the line’s new vessel and more.

What brought you to the cruise industry and this role?

Matthias: My grandfather passed away … and my mom kind of wanted to change the way that we were looking at our holidays and stuff. She was like, “You know what, I remember so many moments of life that were about the vacations I had with my father.” And so we decided that instead of doing Christmas as normal with the gift exchange and all that, that we were going to shake it up and be able to live on the memories of being on vacation together.

So, we ended up taking a cruise, and I had just the best time. We met so many of the crew members, and they were like, “Have you ever thought about working on a cruise ship?” And I was like: “I'm from Minnesota. We don't have cruise ships up there.” And they were like, “OK, that's not like a thing, though. You can still get away.” I was working in a cubicle (at a science museum), and I got back and was like, That life was really exciting . And so I thought, Let me just go for it.

So I put in my application, and I started off as part of the Fun Squad and had a chance to do that and just shared the interest that maybe one day, someday, I could be the cruise director. … And within a year, I ended up having the opportunity to get (experience) and so then I went to the Carnival Splendor, and that was my first ship as a cruise director. And I was only supposed to cover for a vacation, and then it turned out to be a full contract.

How long is a typical contract?

Matthias: Most of our contracts are between like four and six months that we’re on the ship, and then about two months is vacation that we’ll go to our designated homes and get to breathe a little bit and then come back rejuvenated for another dose of it.

How long do you spend on one ship in particular?

Matthias: It kind of depends. One of the cool things about Carnival is that they're always looking at us to be able to bring out the best of ourselves. So, if we are maybe trialing a ship out of Miami and we just (can’t necessarily) get that vibe of Miami, then we can have the conversations of, like, “Oh, I would really like to try a different home port, maybe a different, longer or shorter itinerary.” 

So, it's cool that we do have the option to kind of switch up our ships, but if we do really enjoy (it) and we're finding that we've got a good groove on things, then we also can stick there for a couple of years at a time.

What does a typical day look like?

Matthias: It depends on the day. … So a typical sea day could literally be starting at 8:30 in the morning, where I'm starting to prepare the day, and then I go into (The Wave) Morning Show, and then I go into our debarkation presentation. And then right after that, like, for example, today, we had our Father's Day event on the Lido deck, so then we celebrated with that. And then right afterward, we had our Groove for St. Jude (charity event), and then I ran downstairs to grab a sweat rag and wipe off my face. … So there's all these events that coordinate the majority of my day. But then I'm also responsible for doing a couple (of) reports at the end of the day, making sure that my Fun Squad – which is the team that I'm the direct supervisor toward – (is) also prepared and set and whatever. And so I have the sit-down time to be able to chat with them, check in with them. …

Port days, we get up, we get everybody off the ship, and then that's kind of like our downtime. So there are times where we get to go and explore the ports, or sometimes we just need to stick around and take a nap or do some laundry.

And then for days … where it's debarkation, it's a little bit more stressful just because we've got (thousands of) guests that are going to be all getting off the ship and then we have a little bit of time to kind of catch a breath, and then we get ready to do it all over again.

What is your relationship with the guests like?

Matthias: I think for me, one of the biggest parts of this job is I am really all about making sure that not only is everybody having a good time, (but I also) want to make sure everybody's included. So I really try to emphasize being able to make sure that I am off the stage and walking around the ship just as much, because I want people to feel that they can come up to me and be like, “Hey, I don't know you, but you seem kind of cool and can we get a picture?” Absolutely. …

So for me, even though the days can be long, they can be tiring, it's that experience of being able to say, “I want to get you away from some of the stress, some of the headache of life on land, to give you this fun for a little while and make sure that you know that you're just as special as the person next to you and the person next to them and the person next to them.”

What’s it like to launch a new ship?

Matthias: Being able to bring the new ship (to the fleet) is stressful because there's so much pressure. But it's also really cool because – my mom had said to me, “Look, you've got all these people that are going to be looking towards you, but remember, they chose you for a reason, and it's because you know what you're doing.” 

… I get to be the face of this brand new beautiful ship, but I also know that I've got a really amazing support system of my Fun Squad, of the hotel director, of the housekeeping team, from the food operations teams. Everyone's here because, at the end of the day, we just want to make sure that there's a great experience.

What is your favorite part of doing this type of work?

Matthias: To be completely honest, as cheesy as people might think it is, it's actually the people. When I originally got into the idea of working on a cruise ship, I thought, This is going to be a moment for myself to be able to go explore the world (and) see all these amazing places that I've never been to . And I have been so honored to be able to go and see so many corners and pockets of the world that I never even heard of, (and) then to consistently be able to go back there.

But for me, it's the memories of being there with the people that make that experience so much more amazing and being able to meet now friends that literally come from all over the world.
